  1. Good morning everybody. If you could all turn to Romans chapter 8, I'd appreciate that.

    Romans 8:12–27

  5. Therefore, brothers and sisters, we have an obligation.

  6. 1-1-3-5 in the Red Church Bible.

  7. 2-1-3-5 in the Red Church Bible.

  8. 3-1-4 in the Red Church Bible.

  9. 4-1-5 in the Red Church Bible.

  10. if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live. For those who

  11. are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. The Spirit you receive does not make

  12. you slaves so that you live in fear again. Rather, the Spirit you receive brought about

  13. your adoption to sonship. And by Him we cry, Abba, Father. The Spirit Himself testifies

  14. with our spirit that we are God's children. Now if we are children, then we are heirs,

  15. heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share His sufferings in order that we may

  16. also share in His glory. I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing

  17. the glory that will be revealed in us. For the creation waits in eager expectation for the

  18. children of God to be revealed. For the creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own

  19. choice, but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be

  20. liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the freedom and glory the children of God.

  21. We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the

  22. present time. Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly

  23. as we wait eagerly for our adoption to sonship, the redemption of our bodies. For in this hope we

  24. were saved. But hope that is seen is no hope at all, who hopes for what they already have.

  25. But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently. In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness.

  26. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.

  27. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God's people

  28. in accordance with the will of God. Amen.

  29. Amen.

  30. Amen.

  31. Well, you know what, if Johnny had asked me a few months ago to preach a sermon on prayer,

  32. definitely would have said no.

  33. And the reason for it would be that I would have said I'd be the last person in this church

  34. who should have preached a sermon on that topic.

  35. Really, it's the area in my life that I struggle with the most, actually,

  36. in terms of my walk with the Lord.

  37. But when Johnny gave us the very broad series title of The Christian Life,

  38. and when I started to pray and think about what I might preach on,

  39. I just couldn't get away from prayer.

  40. God really laid it on my heart as I was preaching this today.

  41. And to be honest, that seemed very strange to me.

  42. And I asked God, well, why are you asking me to preach on this,

  43. seeing as I'm the one who's struggling with it?

  44. Seeing as I've got a lot of questions that I still haven't answered on prayer.

  45. And then I kind of realized, actually, my weakness is the very reason why God wants me to preach on this.

  46. Because that's actually the way he operates, right?

  47. God uses the weak people to do amazing things because his strength can be revealed.

  48. And in such people.

  49. So I'm excited about that.

  50. Because if any one of our prayer lives today are impacted for the good,

  51. it's not going to be me.

  52. It's going to be God doing that work.

  53. And that's what I'm praying for today.

  54. So what I'm praying before you, really, is just my learning over the past two months or so.

  55. As I've taken time to study what God's Word says about prayer,

  56. and also to look at the teachings of other Christians.

  57. So, yeah, I hope that it's helpful for you today.

  58. And homework task number one for you guys.

  59. I know I can't help being a teacher even over summer holidays.

  60. I want you guys to study the Lord's Prayer this week.

  61. I'm not going to be preaching on it today, but you guys need to study it.

  62. It's the number one place to go to to learn how to pray.

  63. It's such a valuable resource for you.

  64. Number two, okay, this is a little bit more optional than number one.

  65. I don't usually give optional homework, but there you go.

  66. I'm going to give it to you guys.

  67. I want to read A Praying Life by Paul Miller.

  68. I actually forgot to bring the book with me to show you.

  69. But I'll just ask me later if you forget the name of that.

  70. I just will try to recommend this book to anyone who struggles to understand how prayer works

  71. and why it's so confusing at times.

  72. And I'll be quoting that book a little bit today, but really we're turning our attention

  73. and our focus to God's Word as found in Romans chapter 8.

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  74. So let's just pray briefly before we go any further and commit this time to the Lord.

  75. Jesus, Father, I thank you for this time that we could come together to sit under your Word.

  76. And Lord, you know my weakness, but I thank you that you are strong.

  77. And I pray that, Lord, in this week you'd help all of us to apply your Word to our lives

  78. and, Lord, to walk closer with you and to build a strong prayer life.

  79. In Jesus' name I pray.

  80. Amen.

  81. Amen.

  82. So, just a quick synopsis of where God's Word is taking us today.

  83. Firstly, we're going to start with the bedrock prayer, which is knowing who we are in God,

  84. before moving on to some of the basics of how we are to pray,

  85. which is by the Spirit, helpless and childlike.

  86. And then lastly, we're going to learn about the purpose of suffering in prayer

  87. and how to pray when we actually have no words left to say.

  88. So that's where we're going.

  89. Just to set that theme for Romans chapter 8,

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  90. the context of that,

  91. the author and apostle Paul has been teaching the Roman Christians

  92. that they are no longer slaves to sin,

  93. not to be controlled by it.

  94. Rather, they are freed from sin to live according to the Spirit instead.

  95. So this is where we pick up in verse 12.

  96. So if you guys would follow along with me.

  97. Verse 12 and 13.

  98. Therefore, brothers and sisters, we have an obligation,

  99. but it is not to the flesh to live according to it.

  100. For if you live according to the flesh, you will die.

  101. But if by the Spirit you put to death the misbead deeds of the body, you will live.

  102. So when Paul speaks of the flesh here,

  103. he means our natural sinful desires.

  104. The sinful desires offer us appealing, temporary pleasures,

  105. but in the end just destroy us.

  106. He says here that we owe nothing to the flesh.

  107. All the flesh has ever sought to done is destroy us,

  108. and it has always failed to fully satisfy us.

  109. So Paul says, don't live by it.

  110. Don't live by it and die.

  111. Rather, in the Spirit's power,

  112. put to death the misdeeds of the body and live.

  113. Okay, so Paul continues in verse 14,

  114. and these are some of the most glorious, amazing truths

  115. known to believers in Christ.

  116. Verse 14 and 16.

  117. For those who are led by the Spirit of God

  118. are the children of God.

  119. The Spirit you received does not make you slaves

  120. so that you live in fear again.

  121. Rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship.

  122. And by Him we cry,

  123. Abba, Father.

  124. The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit

  125. that we are God's children.

  126. So, firstly, what is the better off of prayer?

  127. Well, we have to know who we are.

  128. We are precious and dearly loved children

  129. of the God of the universe.

  130. And let me say that another way,

  131. because that's completely astounding.

  132. The maker of the galaxies,

  133. the sustainer of the whole universe.

  134. He considers you to be his precious child.

  135. Now, most scholars agree that this idea

  136. of addressing God as Abba, Father,

  137. was actually quite outrageous.

  138. At the time when Paul was writing this.

  139. How could God be that personal and close?

  140. Well, the answer is

  141. only through what Jesus has done for us.

  142. Before we knew Jesus as Savior,

  143. our sin and rebellion separated us

  144. and actually made us children of wrath,

  145. not of God.

  146. But in the most beautiful

  147. and extravagant act of mercy,

  148. Jesus Christ took earth in on Himself.

  149. He died for it

  150. and in exchange gave us forgiveness of sins,

  151. eternal life,

  152. and all of His rights

  153. as a son of God.

  154. And not only that,

  155. but those who accept Christ

  156. are given the free gift

  157. of His Holy Spirit,

  158. who, as it says in verse 15,

  159. brings about our adoption of sonship.

  160. He makes us sons and daughters.

  161. When we receive the Spirit,

  162. we change from children of wrath

  163. to children of God.

  164. How incredible is His grace?

  165. But in verse 17,

  166. you know,

  167. it actually goes even further.

  168. And in some ways,

  169. it's actually more staggering

  170. than the first reality.

  171. Follow with me,

  172. verse 17.

  173. Now if we are children,

  174. then we are heirs,

  175. heirs of God

  176. and co-heirs with Christ,

  177. if indeed we share His sufferings

  178. in order that we may also share His glory.

  179. So,

  180. 2,000 years ago,

  181. in Paul's Greco-Roman world,

  182. adoption was a common practice.

  183. And the adopted son

  184. will be given all the rights

  185. of the other children in the family,

  186. including an equal right

  187. to the inheritance of the Father.

  188. And the astounding thing is

  189. that this is true

  190. for believers in Christ as well.

  191. The Father takes us in,

  192. while we are still His enemies,

  193. living in rebellion against Him.

  194. And Jesus takes the judgment

  195. we deserve to get.

  196. And in exchange,

  197. He gives us everything

  198. that He deserves to get.

  199. And this is unprecedented

  200. eternal events

  201. we share in the Father's inheritance.

  202. We get to know Jesus' Father

  203. as our Father now.

  204. And as it says in verse 17,

  205. we are heirs of God.

  206. But also,

  207. we are co-heirs with Christ.

  208. Which means,

  209. Christ's kingdom

  210. is also ours now.

  211. Try and get your head around that.

  212. We will rule it together

  213. when God makes the new heaven

  214. and the new earth.

  215. Look at this verse

  216. in 2 Timothy 2.12.

  217. It says,

  218. We will reign with Him.

  219. And then in 1 Corinthians 2.21,

  220. it's on the screen as well.

  221. All things are yours.

  222. Whether Paul,

  223. or Apollos,

  224. or Cephas,

  225. or the world,

  226. or life,

  227. or death,

  228. or the present,

  229. or the future,

  230. all are yours.

  231. And you are of Christ.

  232. And Christ is of God.

  233. You know,

  234. these truths are so astonishing

  235. that it's actually possible

  236. for us in our own strength

  237. to understand them.

  238. We need the Holy Spirit's help

  239. to make them a reality.

  240. And I think there's just two questions

  241. that arise from this.

  242. As you look around today

  243. and you see your brothers and sisters

  244. in Christ,

  245. who do you see?

  246. Do you just see parents,

  247. students,

  248. factory workers,

  249. office workers?

  250. Because do you know what?

  251. Over and above all of those things,

  252. the people sitting around you

  253. are the sons and daughters

  254. of God

  255. and the future inheritors

  256. of Christ's kingdom.

  257. Now I think that changes

  258. how we look at one another,

  259. how we respect

  260. and love one another.

  261. Maybe that changes

  262. the way we speak to each other,

  263. how we talk about each other.

  264. You know,

  265. the second question

  266. I think that this raises is this.

  267. What else could define us

  268. as people?

  269. What else could define us

  270. in our lives?

  271. I mean,

  272. our community

  273. culture says

  274. that you are defined

  275. by the job,

  276. money,

  277. house,

  278. holidays,

  279. relationships,

  280. and the health

  281. that you do or don't have.

  282. And you know what God says to that?

  283. No.

  284. This is what defines you.

  285. You are a precious,

  286. dearly loved,

  287. child of the God of the universe

  288. and an heir of all things.

  289. So that makes you

  290. something incredibly special.

  291. You are by no means

  292. ordinary,

  293. small,

  294. or inconsequential.

  295. You may never be famous

  296. or widely known

  297. outside of Pierre Glein,

  298. but you're someone extraordinary

  299. because you're in Christ today.

  300. That changes everything

  301. in your life.

  302. That also changes everything

  303. about your prayer life.

  304. this is the bedrock of prayer.

  305. Know who you are

  306. as you come to pray.

  307. But now we want to move on

  308. and we want to listen closely

  309. to what this passage says

  310. about how we are to pray.

  311. Away, wasp.

  312. No?

  313. Go away.

  314. No?

  315. You want to stay with me?

  316. So, yeah,

  317. I'll ask you to say that.

  318. So, yeah,

  319. in no way does this passage

  320. encompass everything

  321. that could be said about prayer,

  322. but there's three huge aspects

  323. about prayer

  324. that it does touch on

  325. and we're just going to

  326. focus on those.

  327. And they're actually all found

  328. in this one small phrase.

  329. By him,

  330. we cry,

  331. Abba Father.

  332. So you can see

  333. my nice graphics

  334. there I did up.

  335. We're going to split it

  336. into three,

  337. take them one at a time.

  338. We're going to see

  339. what we can get out of this

  340. and what we can learn

  341. about prayer.

  342. Firstly,

  343. by him,

  344. we cry,

  345. Abba Father.

  346. which means

  347. we pray

  348. by the Spirit.

  349. That's what Paul

  350. talked about there.

  351. Paul says in Ephesians 2.18,

  352. Pray in the Spirit

  353. on all occasions

  354. with all kinds

  355. of prayers

  356. and requests.

  357. And back in verse 14,

  358. he said that those

  359. who are led

  360. by the Spirit of God

  361. are sons of God.

  362. So we learn that

  363. close communion

  364. with the Spirit

  365. is absolutely essential

  366. to constant communication

  367. with the Father.

  368. The Spirit is the one

  369. who enables us to pray.

  370. And as it says later

  371. in verse 26,

  372. the Spirit is helping us

  373. in our weakness.

  374. He's actually interceding

  375. with the Father

  376. on our behalf.

  377. And we're going to talk

  378. about that more later,

  379. but we learn

  380. that close intimacy

  381. with the Spirit

  382. is incredibly important.

  383. And we need to be clear here,

  384. the Spirit is never

  385. drawing attention

  386. to himself.

  387. He's always pointing us

  388. to the Father

  389. and to the Son

  390. for all of our joy,

  391. all of our love,

  392. all of our day-to-day needs.

  393. But we can push away

  394. the Spirit

  395. when he prompts us

  396. towards Christ.

  397. We so often ignore him.

  398. I don't know if you're like me,

  399. but I find incredible ways

  400. of squeezing him out

  401. and filling up my day

  402. with all these other noises

  403. and voices

  404. and never having the times

  405. of quiet to hear him speak.

  406. Or maybe in the busyness.

  407. We try to do life

  408. all in our own strength.

  409. Ignoring God's health,

  410. in fact.

  411. You know what?

  412. We need to be sensitive

  413. to the Spirit

  414. leading and drawing.

  415. Which means being open to him.

  416. Giving him space

  417. in our day-to-day lives.

  418. And allowing him

  419. to move us

  420. towards Jesus

  421. and towards the Father.

  422. And I don't know

  423. what this means for you,

  424. but for me,

  425. if I didn't keep

  426. checking myself,

  427. every spare moment

  428. of my day

  429. would be spent

  430. on my phone

  431. checking sports

  432. or Instagram

  433. or whatever.

  434. whatever.

  435. I think I'm actually

  436. addicted to sports news.

  437. RTE can only produce

  438. so many sports articles

  439. in a day.

  440. They're not producing

  441. enough for me.

  442. Anyway,

  443. and God has really

  444. convinced me recently

  445. of how

  446. there's so many times

  447. in the day

  448. where I could just be

  449. drawn near to him

  450. when I just have spare moments

  451. and I said,

  452. what's the first thing

  453. I do?

  454. Flick out the phone.

  455. RTE,

  456. whatever.

  457. And God has really

  458. convicted me about that.

  459. So,

  460. and actually,

  461. another way,

  462. I always used to listen

  463. to the radio

  464. on my way to work

  465. in the morning.

  466. I got a half an hour

  467. commute to band.

  468. And what Lurk

  469. convinced me about that,

  470. actually,

  471. this was a valuable time

  472. that I could use,

  473. actually,

  474. have a structured

  475. prayer time,

  476. which has been

  477. really fruitful.

  478. On my way back,

  479. you know,

  480. I'm calling people

  481. doing different jobs,

  482. but on my way to school,

  483. I have that time

  484. every morning,

  485. structured prayer,

  486. where everything else

  487. is switched off,

  488. no music,

  489. no noise,

  490. just an uninterrupted

  491. time of closeness

  492. and prayer with God.

  493. And I just done wonders

  494. for my prayer life.

  495. It changes

  496. how I go about my day.

  497. So basically,

  498. look,

  499. the Father is waiting

  500. for us to come.

  501. And in what way

  502. do you need to make

  503. more space

  504. for the Spirit

  505. in your normal day?

  506. And what unnecessary

  507. noities

  508. do you need to cut out?

  509. Think about that

  510. for yourselves.

  511. So firstly,

  512. we pray by the Spirit.

  513. And secondly,

  514. it's by Him

  515. that we cry

  516. at the Father.

  517. So we're just going

  518. to focus on that word,

  519. cry.

  520. Why is it used there?

  521. I mean,

  522. that's a word

  523. that I often

  524. actually associate

  525. with weakness

  526. and helplessness.

  527. God's telling us

  528. something important here

  529. about how we are to pray.

  530. to come to God

  531. in prayer,

  532. we must come

  533. knowing our weakness

  534. and our helplessness

  535. without Him.

  536. And now that's all

  537. very well and good,

  538. you say,

  539. but that flies in the face

  540. of everything

  541. that our culture

  542. tells us we should be,

  543. which is independent,

  544. strong,

  545. self-confident,

  546. believing in yourself

  547. that you can do life

  548. in your own strength.

  549. And you only look

  550. for health

  551. when you really need it,

  552. if it's really necessary.

  553. But the rest of life,

  554. 90% of it,

  555. you've got that covered.

  556. You can do that

  557. on your own.

  558. You know what?

  559. Jesus,

  560. He turns those assumptions

  561. upside down.

  562. He modeled a life

  563. of total dependence

  564. upon His Father.

  565. Have a look at this verse

  566. on the screen.

  567. John 5, 19.

  568. Jesus speaking.

  569. He says,

  570. the Son can do nothing

  571. by Himself.

  572. He can only do

  573. what He sees His Father doing

  574. because whatever

  575. the Father does,

  576. the Son also does.

  577. And you know what?

  578. After Jesus modeled

  579. this kind of life

  580. of dependence,

  581. He later tells His disciples

  582. in John 15, verse 5,

    John 15:5

  583. I am the vine.

  584. You are the branches.

  585. If you remain in Me

  586. and I in you,

  587. you will bear much fruit.

  588. But listen to this.

  589. Apart from Me,

  590. you can do nothing.

  591. Now,

  592. our proud heart,

  593. we don't like to hear that.

  594. We don't want to hear that

  595. without Jesus,

  596. we could do nothing

  597. of any good

  598. or substance

  599. for God's kingdom.

  600. We like to kick over this first

  601. because we don't like

  602. being helpless.

  603. We can help ourselves.

  604. Thank you very much.

  605. And that is our nature.

  606. Our Father, however,

  607. wants us to come to Him

  608. weary,

  609. empty-handed,

  610. helpless.

  611. And if you're like me,

  612. actually,

  613. deep down in your heart,

  614. you know that's a good thing

  615. because you know deep down

  616. you are a weary,

  617. helpless,

  618. broken person.

  619. It's okay to be weak.

  620. He wants us,

  621. as it says in His verse,

  622. to continually cry out to Him,

  623. Abba,

  624. Father,

  625. I need you.

  626. I can't go without you.

  627. I have to have you

  628. or else everything I do

  629. is for nothing.

  630. I can't be patient

  631. with my kids without you.

  632. I don't know what to say

  633. to my only family members

  634. without your help.

  635. I can't delight without you.

  636. That's the kind of prayer

  637. God's looking for.

  638. Listen to what Paul says

  639. in 2 Corinthians

  640. about what Jesus said to him

  641. during a crippling trial

  642. in his life.

  643. It's on the screen there.

  644. But he said to me,

  645. My grace is sufficient for you.

  646. My power is made perfect

  647. in weakness.

  648. Therefore,

  649. I will boast

  650. all the more gladly

  651. about my weaknesses

  652. so that Christ's power

  653. may rest on me.

  654. That is why,

  655. for Christ's sake,

  656. I delight in weaknesses

  657. and insults

  658. and hardships

  659. and persecution

  660. and difficulties.

  661. For when I am weak,

  662. then I am strong.

  663. Do you delight

  664. in your weaknesses?

  665. Your weakness

  666. and your suffering

  667. is actually the door

  668. to God's great strength.

  669. Your weakness

  670. is the door to prayer.

  671. It's the door

  672. to dependence

  673. on your almighty

  674. universe-creating Father.

  675. Father.

  676. I love how Paul Miller,

  677. the guy I mentioned earlier,

  678. how he applies this verse.

  679. Read this quote.

  680. He says,

  681. If we think

  682. that we can do life

  683. on our own,

  684. we will not take care seriously.

  685. That really hit me

  686. two months ago

  687. when I read that.

  688. He continues.

  689. He says,

  690. We tell ourselves,

  691. Strong Christians pray a lot.

  692. If I were a stronger Christian,

  693. I'd pray more.

  694. How many of you

  695. thought that like me?

  696. I've definitely thought that.

  697. Well,

  698. Paul says,

  699. Strong Christians do pray more,

  700. but they pray more

  701. because they realize

  702. how weak they are.

  703. They don't try to hide it

  704. from themselves.

  705. Weakness is a channel

  706. that allows them

  707. to access grace.

  708. I can't tell you

  709. the impact

  710. that all of this

  711. has had on my own prayer life

  712. in the past two months.

  713. I've had to repent

  714. of a lot of self-dependence

  715. to be honest.

  716. There was an awful lot

  717. of things in my life

  718. that I never

  719. asked God help for.

  720. I just assumed

  721. that I had it covered.

  722. But when those things

  723. started to crumble and break,

  724. I'd find myself

  725. on my knees

  726. crying out to God

  727. for his help

  728. and his mercy.

  729. And I realized,

  730. actually,

  731. do you know what?

  732. I wasn't.

  733. I was in control

  734. all along.

  735. I was actually

  736. very, very fragile

  737. and weak

  738. all along.

  739. I actually

  740. struggled myself

  741. into thinking

  742. that I was able

  743. and I didn't need any help.

  744. So more recently,

  745. I've come a little wiser

  746. and I started each day

  747. by confessing

  748. my utter helplessness

  749. to God.

  750. By confessing

  751. my weakness

  752. and my need of Him.

  753. And I encourage you guys

  754. to do the same.

  755. So get on your knees

  756. each morning

  757. and start like that.

  758. And ask Him

  759. for His help.

  760. John Pike

  761. says it this way.

  762. The Spirit

  763. has worked

  764. a childishness

  765. in you.

  766. A little,

  767. desperate,

  768. helpless.

  769. I need help.

  770. I can't

  771. save myself.

  772. I've got to have a daddy.

  773. I can't live

  774. without that help.

  775. It's the Holy Spirit's

  776. real,

  777. childlike,

  778. happy,

  779. cry to the Father.

  780. Father.

  781. So how do we pray?

  782. Well,

  783. firstly,

  784. we pray by the Spirit.

  785. And secondly,

  786. we cry out

  787. to our Father,

  788. continually embracing

  789. our weakness

  790. and helplessness

  791. and inviting our Father

  792. to be strong for us.

  793. But the third part

  794. of this little phrase here

  795. is just the words,

  796. Abba,

  797. Father.

  798. Let's just briefly

  799. look at this.

  800. I reckon that children

  801. maybe are the best

  802. example we have

  803. in life

  804. of someone

  805. who is health

  806. and weak.

  807. Elodie,

  808. who is my

  809. 11-week-old daughter.

  810. She's back there

  811. with her auntie

  812. right now.

  813. She's just a picture

  814. of defendants.

  815. She cries very loudly

  816. at her parents

  817. until her parents

  818. give her what she needs.

  819. She knows

  820. that she can't do

  821. life without us.

  822. She longs

  823. for our cuddles,

  824. our attention,

  825. our soothing words.

  826. It's actually

  827. the cutest thing.

  828. In the morning,

  829. when she's starting

  830. to wake up,

  831. and when we lift

  832. our heads over her

  833. so that she can see us,

  834. her face instantly

  835. just lights up

  836. with ear-to-ear smile.

  837. She just longs

  838. to be with us.

  839. She longs

  840. for our closeness

  841. and our attention.

  842. You know what?

  843. We wonder

  844. what her first words

  845. are going to be.

  846. It's going to be

  847. dada.

  848. It's going to be mama.

  849. Well, God says,

  850. call me Abba.

  851. Call me Abba, Father.

  852. It's like God saying,

  853. come like a child

  854. in your helplessness,

  855. in your simple longing

  856. for your daddy

  857. and his closeness.

  858. Come like a child.

  859. Just as you are.

  860. No errors are graces.

  861. Any parents here

  862. will know that

  863. your children

  864. don't have to be clean,

  865. perfectly behaved,

  866. or in a good mood

  867. for you to whisk them

  868. up onto your knee

  869. and listen to their stories.

  870. Look what Jesus says

  871. in Matthew 18, verse 3.

    Matthew 18:3

  872. Truly I tell you,

  873. unless you change

  874. and become like little children,

  875. you will never enter

  876. the kingdom of heaven.

  877. God calls us

  878. to cry out to him,

  879. Abba, Father.

  880. It's simple.

  881. There's nothing complicated.

  882. If you're worried

  883. about knowing

  884. the right things

  885. to say to God,

  886. and that's stopping

  887. you from praying,

  888. well, just leave

  889. those worries

  890. at his feet.

  891. Because you know what?

  892. Children don't worry

  893. about what they're going

  894. to say to their parents,

  895. do they?

  896. No, they just blurt it out.

  897. And oftentimes

  898. when you're in public

  899. that can be quite embarrassing

  900. what they do blurt out.

  901. You know,

  902. a lot of people

  903. as well,

  904. including me,

  905. can struggle

  906. to focus in prayer.

  907. But just as any

  908. loving parent

  909. makes time to sit

  910. and listen

  911. to their child's

  912. meandering,

  913. so your Abba Father

  914. loves to hear

  915. from you also,

  916. even when you go

  917. off on tangents

  918. and start thinking

  919. about the rugby.

  920. Guilty.

  921. You know what?

  922. If you get distracted,

  923. don't give up.

  924. Keep going back

  925. to the Father

  926. in prayer.

  927. And while we talk

  928. a lot about prayer

  929. moment by moment

  930. throughout the day,

  931. it's also important

  932. to set a time

  933. in the day

  934. for structured,

  935. purposeful prayer,

  936. where we're

  937. undistracted.

  938. And there's some

  939. very helpful things

  940. that we can do.

  941. There's lots of

  942. helpful things

  943. we can do

  944. to aid our focus,

  945. such as

  946. writing reminders

  947. and prayer cards

  948. to help us

  949. just to focus

  950. and to pray

  951. for the specifics

  952. of life.

  953. But we are always

  954. to come as a child,

  955. knowing that

  956. our Abba Father

  957. longs for us

  958. to run into his arms

  959. even when we are

  960. at his worst,

  961. even when we are

  962. at our worst.

  963. to pray.

  964. So we've learned

  965. three things

  966. from this small phrase.

  967. Number one,

  968. we've learned that

  969. we pray with the

  970. Spirit's help.

  971. Two,

  972. that we need to

  973. acknowledge our

  974. weakness and our

  975. helplessness as we

  976. come to pray.

  977. Thirdly,

  978. to come as a child.

  979. Lastly,

  980. in the rest of this

  981. passage,

  982. Paul addresses

  983. what to do

  984. when we can't

  985. even find the words

  986. to pray.

  987. He talks about

  988. how suffering

  989. is actually

  990. the door to prayer.

  991. So we're just

  992. going to look at that.

  993. Paul speaks at length

  994. about the suffering

  995. that we as Jesus followers

  996. will endure

  997. in this life.

  998. In verse 17,

  999. we learn that

  1000. we are co-heirs

  1001. with Christ

  1002. if indeed

  1003. we share

  1004. in his suffering

  1005. that we may also

  1006. share in his glory.

  1007. So suffering

  1008. is inevitable

  1009. for the believer,

  1010. right?

1011. It's all part of being

  1012. in Christ.

1013. But then in the next

  1014. verse,

  1015. verse 18,

1016. you can read it with me,

  1017. Paul encourages us

  1018. that our present

  1019. sufferings

  1020. are not worth

  1021. comparing with the

  1022. glory

  1023. that will be

  1024. revealed in us.

  1025. Now having that

  1026. perspective in suffering

  1027. is an absolute

  1028. gift from God.

  1029. Just to know that

  1030. this suffering,

  1031. though it is painful,

  1032. is totally outweighed

  1033. by millions upon

  1034. millions of years

  1035. in God's perfect

  1036. presence

  1037. without any pain

  1038. or tears.

  1039. But Paul continues

  1040. in verse 20

  1041. and he explains

  1042. that all of God's

  1043. creation has been

  1044. subjected to frustration

  1045. and to decay

  1046. since the fall

1047. of the Garden of Eden.

  1048. And follow with me

  1049. in verse 22

  1050. and we're going to

  1051. pick it up there.

  1052. He says,

  1053. we know that the

  1054. whole creation

  1055. has been groaning

  1056. as in the pains

  1057. of childbirth

  1058. right up to the

  1059. present time.

  1060. Not only so,

  1061. but we ourselves

  1062. who have the

  1063. first fruits of the

  1064. Spirit

  1065. groan inwardly

  1066. as we wait for

  1067. our adoption

  1068. to sonship,

  1069. the redemption

  1070. of our bodies.

  1071. So we see,

  1072. firstly,

  1073. that God's

  1074. creation itself

  1075. is groaning,

  1076. yearning to be

  1077. made new.

  1078. And secondly,

  1079. we as believers,

  1080. Paul says,

  1081. are groaning.

  1082. Why?

  1083. Because we're not

  1084. in heaven yet.

  1085. We haven't fully

  1086. realized our adoption

  1087. as sons and daughters.

  1088. We haven't apart now,

  1089. but not in full

  1090. just yet.

1091. And in all of this

  1092. he's saying that,

  1093. look,

  1094. our suffering is real.

  1095. The broken world

  1096. that we live in

1097. has yet to be restored.

  1098. And because of that

  1099. question,

  1100. you were right.

  1101. I mean,

  1102. is God ignorant

  1103. of all our groaning?

  1104. Why did he just

1105. put a stop to it right now?

  1106. Would that not be

1107. the loving thing to do?

  1108. I mean,

  1109. what's the reason

  1110. for all this suffering?

  1111. But thank God

  1112. that there are

  1113. verses 26 and 27.

  1114. Read it with me.

  1115. In the same way,

  1116. the Spirit

  1117. helps us

  1118. in our weakness.

  1119. We do not know

1120. what we ought to pray for,

  1121. but the Spirit

  1122. himself

  1123. intercedes for us

  1124. through wordless groans.

  1125. And he who

  1126. searches our hearts

  1127. knows the mind

  1128. and the Spirit

  1129. because the Spirit

  1130. intercedes for God's people

  1131. in accordance

1132. with the will of God.

  1133. Okay?

  1134. So the creation

  1135. is groaning.

  1136. We are groaning.

  1137. Look who else

  1138. is groaning.

  1139. God

  1140. is also

  1141. groaning.

  1142. You know what?

  1143. Far from being distant

  1144. in our suffering,

1145. can you not see here

  1146. that he's actually

  1147. a God

  1148. who's feeling

  1149. everything that we're feeling?

  1150. He's a God

  1151. who groans for us

  1152. and with us.

  1153. It says here

  1154. that the Holy Spirit

  1155. is helping us

  1156. in our weakness.

  1157. He's advocating

1158. to the Father for us.

  1159. When we are left

  1160. speechless

  1161. in suffering,

  1162. the Holy Spirit

  1163. prays for us

  1164. so we can actually

  1165. rest

  1166. even in the most

  1167. bitter of trials.

1168. It even goes so far

1169. at the end of verse 27

1170. to say that the Spirit's prayers

  1171. are always in accordance

  1172. with God's will.

  1173. He knows the right

1174. things to pray for us.

  1175. So the pressure

  1176. is off there.

  1177. He's praying for us.

  1178. And that means

  1179. that in the deepest

  1180. suffering,

  1181. all that we have

  1182. to do is this.

  1183. Cry Abba

  1184. and rest in Him.

  1185. Just cry Abba

  1186. and rest in Him.

1187. We just have to open

  1188. our hearts up

  1189. again and again

  1190. to our Abba Father

  1191. drawing near to Him.

  1192. Not running from Him.

  1193. Even when you don't

  1194. understand what He's doing,

  1195. don't run.

  1196. Give the Spirit

  1197. the space

  1198. to lead you back

  1199. to the cross.

1200. And when you can't pray,

  1201. the Spirit

1202. is filling in that gap

  1203. and He's groaning

  1204. for you

  1205. on your behalf.

1206. I hope that you can see

  1207. that there is

  1208. overwhelming hope

  1209. in suffering.

  1210. And often,

  1211. we can't understand

  1212. why

  1213. when we ask God

1214. to take the suffering away

  1215. and He doesn't.

  1216. We ask God

  1217. for something

  1218. that we honestly

  1219. think is good,

  1220. but in return

  1221. we get something

  1222. that we think

  1223. is worse.

  1224. Prayers like,

  1225. God,

  1226. please heal this illness.

  1227. God,

  1228. please protect them

  1229. from hurt.

  1230. Lord,

  1231. I pray that justice

  1232. would be done.

  1233. Those were actually

  1234. all prayers

1235. that I've prayed this year

1236. and God didn't answer them

  1237. the way I thought

  1238. was best.

  1239. But you know what?

  1240. Jesus has promised

  1241. that the Father

  1242. can actually

  1243. only give us

1244. what is good for us

  1245. and we actually

  1246. need to hold on

  1247. to this promise.

  1248. He says it here

  1249. in Matthew 7

    Matthew 7:9–11

  1250. verses 9 to 11.

  1251. Which of you,

  1252. if your son

  1253. asks for bread,

1254. will give him a stone?

1255. Or if he asks for a fish,

1256. will give him a snake?

  1257. If you,

1258. then though you are evil,

  1259. know how to give

  1260. good gifts

  1261. to your children,

  1262. well how much more

  1263. will your Father

  1264. in heaven

  1265. give good gifts

1266. to those who ask him?

  1267. You know what?

1268. If this verse is true,

  1269. if what he's saying

  1270. here is true,

  1271. then that means

  1272. that when God

  1273. doesn't take away

  1274. our pain,

  1275. it's because he's

  1276. working something

  1277. incredible in us.

  1278. Which is what

  1279. we would have wanted

  1280. if we could only

  1281. have seen things

  1282. from his perspective.

  1283. And when you think

  1284. about it,

  1285. actually,

  1286. suffering is

  1287. really a gift

  1288. from God

  1289. to show us

  1290. our helplessness

  1291. and weakness,

  1292. which then

  1293. causes us

1294. to cry out to him.

  1295. You know what?

  1296. when all is calm

  1297. in life,

  1298. we can fool

  1299. ourselves into thinking

  1300. that we don't need

  1301. Jesus.

  1302. But in suffering,

  1303. we're under no illusions.

  1304. We need God.

  1305. We need our Father.

  1306. So suffering,

  1307. it's an open door

  1308. to prayer

  1309. and reliance

  1310. on our Father.

  1311. God bless you.

  1312. I'm actually going

  1313. to leave you today

  1314. with a story

  1315. from Paul Miller's book

  1316. about this very topic.

  1317. And he speaks

  1318. about a spiritual

  1319. desert time

  1320. in his life

1321. when he and his wife

  1322. discovered that

  1323. their fourth child

  1324. had acquired

  1325. brain surgery,

  1326. not brain surgery,

  1327. brain damage,

  1328. due to medical

  1329. negligence

  1330. at birth.

  1331. Now,

  1332. the interesting thing

  1333. was that Paul's wife,

  1334. Jill,

  1335. had actually prayed

  1336. through the whole pregnancy

  1337. that God would protect

  1338. the baby from her.

  1339. But after the incident,

  1340. their daughter

  1341. grew up with

  1342. increasingly challenging

  1343. behaviours

  1344. and very complicated

  1345. health problems.

1346. And as you can imagine,

1347. that led to a huge

  1348. amount of questions

1349. in Paul and Jill's life.

1350. Why did God love this?

  1351. I mean,

  1352. we prayed for protection

  1353. from her,

  1354. but he didn't.

  1355. How can he still

  1356. be loving

  1357. and good?

1358. Is he still in control?

  1359. And this is what

  1360. Paul had to say

1361. looking back on his life.

  1362. Just listen.

  1363. I'm going to put a little

1364. bit of it on the screen,

1365. but for the most part

  1366. I'm just going to

  1367. read it out.

1368. This is what he says.

  1369. God takes everyone

  1370. he loves

  1371. through the desert.

  1372. The still dry air

  1373. of the desert

  1374. brings a sense

  1375. of helplessness

  1376. that is so crucial

1377. to the spirit of prayer.

1378. You come face to face

  1379. with your inability

  1380. to live,

  1381. have joy,

  1382. or do anything

  1383. of lasting worth.

  1384. The desert

  1385. becomes a window

1386. to the heart of God.

  1387. He finally gets

  1388. your attention

  1389. because he's the only

  1390. game in town.

1391. You cry out to God

  1392. so long

  1393. and so often

  1394. that a channel

  1395. begins to open up

  1396. between you

  1397. and God.

  1398. When driving,

1399. you turn off the radio

1400. just to be with God.

  1401. At night,

1402. you drift in and out

  1403. prayer when you're sleeping.

  1404. Without realizing,

  1405. you've learned

  1406. how to pray

  1407. continuously.

  1408. very early on,

  1409. Jill and I

  1410. were aware

  1411. that because of

  1412. our daughter Kim,

  1413. God was humbling us

  1414. and making us

  1415. more like his son.

  1416. It took us

  1417. 20 years

  1418. to realize

  1419. that God

  1420. used Kim

  1421. to save

  1422. our family.

  1423. God had

  1424. kept us

  1425. from all harm.

  1426. Kim

  1427. brought Jesus

  1428. into our home.

  1429. Jill and I

  1430. could no longer

1431. do life on our own.

  1432. We needed Jesus

  1433. to get from one

  1434. end of the day

  1435. to the other.

  1436. We'd ask

1437. for a loaf of bread

  1438. and instead

  1439. of giving us

  1440. a stone,

  1441. our Father

  1442. had to spread

  1443. a feast for us

  1444. in the wilderness.

  1445. And Paul finishes

  1446. like this,

  1447. he says,

  1448. when we don't receive

  1449. what we pray for

  1450. or desire,

  1451. it doesn't mean

  1452. that God

  1453. isn't acting

  1454. on our behalf.

  1455. Rather,

  1456. he's weaving

  1457. his story.

  1458. Watch out

  1459. for the story

  1460. that God

  1461. is weaving

  1462. in your life

  1463. and don't

  1464. leave the desert.

  1465. So just to

  1466. summarize

  1467. what we've

  1468. done today,

  1469. brothers and sisters,

1470. as you come to pray,

  1471. know who you are.

  1472. You are precious,

  1473. dearly loved

  1474. sons and daughters

  1475. of God,

  1476. heirs of everything

  1477. with Christ.

  1478. Secondly,

  1479. as you pray,

  1480. don't push away

  1481. the spirit.

  1482. Walk with him.

  1483. Come help us

  1484. and weep,

1485. crying out to your Father.

  1486. Come as a child.

  1487. Don't worry

  1488. about what to say.

  1489. And thirdly,

  1490. in your suffering,

  1491. when you don't

  1492. have the words

  1493. to pray,

1494. know that the Holy Spirit

  1495. is groaning

  1496. on your behalf.

  1497. Your suffering

  1498. is an open door

  1499. to prayer

  1500. and an open door

  1501. to God.

  1502. let's pray.

  1503. Let's pray.

  1504. Spirit,

  1505. you're the only one

  1506. who can take

  1507. the truths

  1508. of your word

  1509. and plant them

  1510. deep in our hearts

  1511. so that they

  1512. change us.

  1513. So I pray

1514. that you do that now.

  1515. change our prayer lives.

  1516. Let us walk

  1517. closer with you.

  1518. Let us yearn

  1519. for our heavenly Father

  1520. and cry out

  1521. and continually

  1522. let us acknowledge

  1523. and realize

  1524. our moment

  1525. by moment

  1526. weakness

  1527. and our need

  1528. for you.

  1529. God,

  1530. help us

  1531. in our suffering

  1532. not to despair

  1533. but to use it

  1534. as an opportunity

  1535. to turn to you.

  1536. We commit ourselves

  1537. to you.

  1538. In Jesus' name,

  1539. Amen.

  1540. Amen.

  1541. Amen.

  1542. Thank you, Sam.

  1543. As we finish

  1544. our time together

  1545. we're going to sing

  1546. one more song.

  1547. Classic song.

  1548. What a friend

  1549. we have

  1550. in Jesus

  1551. which I think

  1552. helps us to respond

  1553. in an appropriate way

  1554. to what we've heard

  1555. this morning.

  1556. So again,

  1557. please feel free

  1558. to stand

  1559. as we sing.

  1560. Amen.

  1561. Peace.

  1562. Appreciate it.

  1563. Jesus.

  1564. Thanks.

  1565. Peace.

  1566. Peace.

  1567. Peace.

  1568. Peace.

  1569. Peace.

  1570. Peace.

  1571. Peace.
