  1. So, Colossians chapter 3, reading from verse 1 to verse 14.

    Colossians 3 chapter mention

  2. Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature, sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires, and greed, which is idolatry.

  3. Because of these, the wrath of God is coming.

  4. You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived.

  5. But now, you must also rid yourselves of all such things as these, anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips.

  6. Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices, and have put on the new self, which has been renewed in knowledge in the image of its creator.

  7. Here, there is neither Gentile or Jew, circumcised or uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave, or free.

  8. But Christ is all, and is in all.

  9. Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.

  10. Bear with each other, and forgive one another.

  11. If any of you has a grievance against someone, forgive as the Lord forgave you.

  12. And over all these virtues, put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.

  13. Let's pray before Alex comes to speak from the word.

  14. Lord, we are blessed by the reading of your word, Lord Jesus.

  15. We thank you for the evident truth that it has.

  16. Whether we are a believer or not, Father, its truthfulness and its honesty and its helpfulness shines through.

  17. And Lord, we thank you now for Alex, who you have blessed with many gifts.

  18. And we thank you that he is able to come and teach us now from your word, to preach your word, to speak into our hearts the word of God.

  19. Be gracious to him.

  20. Lord, help us to listen well through the power of the Spirit.

  21. Amen.

  22. Well, good morning, everyone.

  23. As Ralph said, our summer series is based on the Christian life.

  24. And so today, we will mainly, but not totally, be dealing with the issue of dealing with sin.

  25. I want to make this as simple as possible for us all.

  26. So that we can go out and put it into practice straight away.

  27. We will look at three main points.

  28. Some in more depth than others.

  29. So if you're taking notes, these are the three main points.

  30. Spoiler alert.

  31. The main points are, when dealing with sin, we need to look up, we need to put off, and we need to put on.

  32. Just before I continue, everybody at the back and the front, can you hear me okay?

  33. I haven't got a microphone.

  34. Good.

  35. So first, look up.

  36. Let's read chapter 3 again, verse 1 to 3.

  37. Since then, you have been raised with Christ.

  38. Set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God.

  39. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.

  40. For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ and God.

  41. Set your minds on things above, it says.

  42. By looking up, or setting our minds on things above, we will think, meditate, and wrestle with the things of God.

  43. As we think about sin, we will meditate on Christ's saving work on the cross on our behalf.

  44. Let's try and understand first what sin is and what its consequences are.

  45. Kevin DeYoung, the author and theologian, describes sin like this.

  46. He says that the Bible makes it clear that sin is both a condition, inherited from Adam, and an action, manifesting itself in thought, word, and deed.

  47. That when fully grown, gives birth to death.

  48. Very simply, sin is lawlessness.

  49. It means that we've broken God's commands and have fallen short of his glory.

  50. But it actually goes much deeper than just missing the mark.

  51. Sin is idolatry.

  52. Look again at verse 5.

  53. Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature.

  54. Sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires, and greed, which is idolatry.

  55. Sin is worshipping false gods or idols.

  56. Whether these gods are overt and physical, like actions,

  57. or whether they're more subtle and internal, like thoughts or attitudes.

  58. Idols aren't necessarily bad things as such.

  59. Idols can very often be good things, which we have made to be ultimate things.

  60. Sin can also be considered adultery, which is seeking for other sources of satisfaction and meaning other than God.

  61. As we trace sin through the Bible, from Adam to Abraham, from Lot to Laban, from Joseph to Judah,

  62. I didn't get as far as dead.

  63. We see that sin is a big problem.

  64. And human beings are clearly not the solution.

  65. Kevin de Jong again puts it like this.

  66. Every sin, no matter how private or quiet,

  67. is an affront to the holiness, goodness, and kindness of God.

  68. This is what David meant in Psalm 51, verse 4,

    Psalms 51:4

  69. when, after he committed adultery and murder,

  70. and tried to cover both of them up,

  71. he confessed to God.

  72. He says,

  73. Against you, you only have I sinned.

  74. God is ultimately the one we have offended.

  75. When we sin.

  76. As a result, sin cannot be without consequences.

  77. God is a God of justice.

  78. And in the end, every sin and sinner must face consequences.

  79. God would be less than God,

  80. and sin would be something less than sin,

  81. if the Lord allowed our treacherous disobedience to go unnoticed and unchecked.

  82. It is clear that sin must be paid for.

  83. The good news is that Jesus deals with our sin by becoming sin for us.

  84. He conquers the God-defiant wretchedness of sin by divine satisfaction through divine self-substitution.

  85. The truth is that we are sinful.

  86. And no matter how hard we try not to be,

  87. we are still sinners.

  88. And as a result, the punishment for sin is death.

  89. God has seen our desperate state and the state of our heart,

  90. and has decided to do something about it.

  91. Sin is so serious,

  92. that only death can satisfy or pay the cost.

  93. That's why verse 6,

  94. or that's what verse 6 means when it says that the wrath of God is coming.

  95. The wrath of God is defined as the divine attribute by which God intensely hates sin,

  96. and is poised and ready to punish it fully.

  97. For forgiveness,

  98. leading to salvation from God's wrath to occur,

  99. his anger must be satisfied.

  100. So Jesus took the wrath of God on himself,

  101. on the cross,

  102. and as a result,

  103. Christians will never face the wrath of God.

  104. But if you don't believe,

  105. you will experience God's fury in eternal judgment and punishment.

  106. So our sin is our thoughts,

  107. our words,

  108. or our deeds,

  109. that separate us from full union with God.

  110. And Christ's death on the cross

  111. is what brings us back

  112. to God.

  113. Once we have realised what we have been saved from,

  114. God's wrath,

  115. it is easier then to see what we have been saved for.

  116. Look with me at verse 3 and 4.

  117. For you died,

  118. for you died,

  119. and your life is now hidden with Christ and God.

  120. When Christ,

  121. who is your life,

  122. appears,

  123. then you also will appear with him in glory.

  124. It is easier to see what we have been saved for.

  125. To be hidden with Christ in God,

  126. to appear with him in glory.

  127. This is what we are to set our minds on.

  128. To set our minds on things above

  129. is to think about what we have been saved from

  130. and what we have been saved for.

  131. How can we think about these things

  132. or meditate on them

  133. if we neglect to go to the source of them?

  134. We know these things

  135. because the Bible tells us about them.

  136. To meditate on things above

  137. is the original mindfulness.

  138. Filling our minds with good things

  139. and good truth.

  140. It is filling our minds with God's truth

  141. and the good news of saving faith

  142. through Jesus Christ.

  143. Similarly,

  144. as we set our hearts

  145. on things above,

  146. our hearts will yearn

  147. for the things of God

  148. and not for ourselves.

  149. If we love our jobs,

  150. or see our identity

  151. in what we do,

  152. or if we love our spouse,

  153. or we love our children,

  154. or we yearn for a relationship more

  155. than we love God,

  156. then our hearts

  157. are not set on things above.

  158. If we pride ourselves

  159. in self-sufficiency

  160. and never need to ask for help,

  161. then we are not

  162. setting our minds

  163. on things above,

  164. because it robs people

  165. of the opportunity

  166. to serve us.

  167. If our hearts

  168. are more inclined

  169. towards personal comfort

  170. and rest

  171. than fellowship

  172. with other believers,

  173. then our hearts

  174. are not set

  175. on things above.

  176. to have our hearts

  177. set on things above

  178. where Christ is seated

  179. is to be doing

  180. our everyday life

  181. in our jobs,

  182. in our relationships,

  183. in our trials,

  184. in our struggles,

  185. with our eyes fixed

  186. on Christ,

  187. sitting at the right hand

  188. of God.

  189. The image comes

  190. from Psalm 110,

  191. a famous psalm

  192. where David says,

  193. The Lord says to my Lord,

  194. Sit at my right hand

  195. until I make your enemies

  196. a footstool

  197. under your feet.

  198. The image is of Jesus

  199. sitting next to the Father

  200. and speaks of

  201. the promise of glory,

  202. a glory which we,

  203. as believers,

  204. will also enjoy.

  205. And that's picked up

  206. in verse 4

  207. of Colossians 3 again.

  208. When Christ,

  209. who is your life,

  210. appears,

  211. then you also

  212. will appear

  213. with him in glory.

  214. People often say

  215. about someone

  216. that they are

  217. too heavenly minded

  218. to be of any

  219. earthly good.

  220. Well, in actual fact,

  221. what Paul is saying here

  222. is that to be

  223. of any earthly good,

  224. we should be

  225. more heavenly minded.

  226. For example,

  227. when we are

  228. tired or weary,

  229. instead of

  230. vegging out

  231. on Facebook

  232. or YouTube

  233. or in front

  234. of the telly,

  235. we could turn

  236. our minds

  237. to things above.

  238. And God's word

  239. tells us in

  240. Matthew 11,

  241. Come to me,

  242. all you who are

  243. weary and burdened,

  244. and I will give you rest.

  245. Or suppose we are

  246. anxious about the future

  247. or about our finances.

  248. Well, we could worry

  249. about them

  250. or we could set

  251. our minds

  252. on things above

  253. and read

  254. Matthew chapter 6,

    Matthew 6 chapter mention

  255. which tells us

  256. of the uselessness

  257. of storing up

  258. treasures on earth

  259. where moth and rust

  260. destroy,

  261. but to seek first

  262. his kingdom

  263. and his righteousness.

  264. Or suppose we are

  265. discouraged

  266. by taking a stand

  267. for Christ publicly

  268. or continually doing

  269. the right thing,

  270. we are still discouraged

  271. because we don't

  272. think it makes

  273. any difference.

  274. Well, we could just

  275. give up doing

  276. the right thing.

  277. Or, as Matthew

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  278. chapter 5 says

  279. in verse 11,

  280. Blessed are you

  281. when people insult you,

  282. persecute you,

  283. and falsely say

  284. all kinds of evil

  285. against you

  286. because of me.

  287. Rejoice and be glad

  288. because great is

  289. your reward in heaven.

  290. For in the same way

  291. they persecuted

  292. the prophets

  293. who were before you.

  294. Even when we are

  295. tempted to sin,

  296. having a heavenly

  297. outlook will help us.

  298. For example,

  299. in Psalm 139,

  300. David says,

  301. Search me, O God,

  302. and know my heart.

  303. Test me and know

  304. my anxious thoughts.

  305. See if there is

  306. any offensive way

  307. in me and lead me

  308. in the way everlasting.

  309. Our help in times

  310. of trouble comes

  311. when we have

  312. a heavenly mindset.

  313. It's like when

  314. training for a marathon.

  315. The average runner

  316. will run close to

  317. 500 miles over 16 weeks

  318. leading up to the big day.

  319. There will be

  320. early mornings,

  321. there will be

  322. long runs,

  323. there will be

  324. rainy runs,

  325. there will be

  326. hilly runs,

  327. there will be

  328. really hot

  329. and sticky runs,

  330. there will be

  331. blisters on your feet

  332. and even nastier things

  333. which I won't go into now.

  334. But once you set

  335. your mind

  336. on running

  337. and finishing

  338. that run

  339. on that one day,

  340. that is what gets

  341. you up early

  342. in the morning

  343. for the runs

  344. and drives you

  345. through the pain

  346. of blisters,

  347. setting your mind

  348. on the goal,

  349. the glory

  350. that awaits

  351. for you

  352. on this finish line.

  353. set your hearts

  354. and minds

  355. on things above.

  356. Look up.

  357. Secondly,

  358. put off.

  359. With the benefit

  360. of looking up,

  361. we are now equipped

  362. to put off.

  363. Verse 5.

  364. Put to death,

  365. therefore,

  366. whatever belongs

  367. to your earthly nature.

  368. Sexual immorality,

  369. impurity,

  370. lust,

  371. evil desires

  372. and greed,

  373. which is idolatry.

  374. When it comes

  375. to our response

  376. to sin,

  377. the Bible is stark

  378. and clear.

  379. We are to put it

  380. to death.

  381. Put to death

  382. whatever belongs

  383. to your earthly nature.

  384. What's our earthly nature?

  385. Well,

  386. things that feel good

  387. and natural

  388. and normal

  389. and things that we are told

  390. are normal

  391. and natural

  392. and good.

  393. That's our sinful nature.

  394. That's our earthly nature.

  395. Well,

  396. as we know,

  397. not all things

  398. that feel natural

  399. are good.

  400. Paul says

  401. that as Christians

  402. we no longer

  403. need to take

  404. the bait of sin.

  405. of what feels natural

  406. or our sinful nature.

  407. We are freed

  408. from that compulsion

  409. to sin.

  410. Believers can reject

  411. all those behaviours

  412. that alienate them

  413. from each other

  414. and from God.

  415. Because

  416. when we died

  417. in Christ

  418. we died

  419. to the power

  420. of sin

  421. over us

  422. and that power

  423. was replaced

  424. with the power

  425. of the Holy Spirit

  426. which enables us

  427. to reject

  428. sinful behaviour.

  429. Verse 5 says

  430. to put to death

  431. therefore

  432. whatever belongs

  433. to your earthly nature

  434. sexual immorality

  435. impurity

  436. lust

  437. evil desires

  438. and greed

  439. which is idolatry.

  440. Because of these

  441. the wrath of God

  442. is coming.

  443. You used to walk

  444. in those ways

  445. in these ways

  446. in the life

  447. you once lived

  448. but now

  449. you must read yourself

  450. of all such things

  451. as these

  452. anger

  453. rage

  454. malice

  455. slander

  456. filthy language

  457. from your lips.

  458. When we look

  459. at a list like this

  460. we can be tempted

  461. to start counting up

  462. well

  463. one and a half

  464. out of five

  465. in the first list

  466. and

  467. two out of five

  468. in the second list

  469. well that's not too bad

  470. really is it?

  471. That's nearly a pass.

  472. Well that's not the point

  473. though.

  474. Let's look at

  475. the first list.

  476. Verse five again

  477. sexual immorality

  478. impurity

  479. lust

  480. evil desires

  481. and greed

  482. it's no accident

  483. that these are listed

  484. in order of

  485. most visible

  486. to the least visible.

  487. So Paul begins

  488. with

  489. public

  490. sexual immorality.

  491. which was rampant

  492. in the ancient

  493. pagan world.

  494. He moves

  495. from

  496. behaviours

  497. to

  498. attitudes

  499. including

  500. greed

  501. which focuses

  502. on satisfying

  503. physical desires.

  504. He concludes

  505. by saying

  506. that if we

  507. trace back

  508. from the behaviour

  509. to the motivation

  510. behind it

  511. we find

  512. idolatry

  513. at the core.

  514. By focusing

  515. inwardly

  516. on satisfying

  517. our physical

  518. passions

  519. well that

  520. amounts to

  521. placing ourselves

  522. at the centre

  523. instead of God.

  524. Therefore

  525. if we want

  526. to bring about

  527. change in the

  528. public behavioural

  529. level

  530. of our lives

  531. we have to

  532. ultimately kill

  533. that which led

  534. to it all

  535. in the first place

  536. which is

  537. idolatry.

  538. as with

  539. weeds

  540. in the

  541. garden

  542. simply

  543. snapping

  544. off the

  545. shoots

  546. will not

  547. make

  548. permanent

  549. changes.

  550. The gardener

  551. must dig

  552. out the

  553. roots

  554. for any

  555. lasting

  556. results.

  557. So I

  558. ask you

  559. this morning

  560. what's

  561. your

  562. idol?

  563. The

  564. second list

  565. starts

  566. with

  567. anger.

  568. anger.

  569. The

  570. public

  571. demonstration

  572. of which

  573. is

  574. rage.

  575. And he

  576. goes on

  577. to the

  578. more

  579. subtle

  580. forms

  581. of

  582. anger

  583. such

  584. as

  585. slander.

  586. Well in

  587. each case

  588. what comes

  589. from a

  590. person's

  591. mouth

  592. dishonours

  593. or pollutes

  594. them.

  595. As new

  596. creations

  597. the

  598. Colossians

  599. are to

  600. rid

  601. themselves

  602. or to

  603. put off

  604. their

  605. old

  606. repulsive

  607. habits

  608. including

  609. evil

  610. speech.

  611. Anger

  612. and rage

  613. destroy

  614. harmony

  615. in human

  616. relationships.

  617. Malice

  618. is a

  619. general

  620. term

  621. describing

  622. an evil

  623. force

  624. that

  625. wrecks

  626. fellowship.

  627. Slander

  628. in this

  629. passage

  630. means the

  631. insulting

  632. of human

  633. character.

  634. Filthy

  635. language

  636. ought to

  637. be

  638. stopped

  639. before

  640. it

  641. even

  642. comes

  643. out

  644. of

  645. their

  646. mouths.

  647. In

  648. light of

  649. this

  650. what

  651. comes

  652. out

  653. of

  654. our

  655. mouths

  656. is

  657. important

  658. and so

  659. there

  660. is

  661. no

  662. place

  663. for

  664. lying.

  665. If we

  666. are

  667. Christ's

  668. image

  669. bearers

  670. well then

  671. we must

  672. be truthful.

  673. so this

  674. morning

  675. if you

  676. are

  677. a

  678. Christian

  679. you

  680. probably

  681. at one

  682. time

  683. praised

  684. the

  685. prayer

  686. of

  687. repentance

  688. and

  689. asked

  690. Jesus

  691. to

  692. forgive

  693. you

  694. of

  695. your

  696. sins.

  697. Well

  698. this

  699. is

  700. good.

  701. I

  702. give

  703. thanks

  704. that

  705. many

  706. of

  707. you

  708. have

  709. reached

  710. that

  711. point.

  712. But

  713. the

  714. Christian

  715. life

  716. is

  717. not

  718. a

  719. one

  720. off

  721. decision

  722. to

  723. repent

  724. of

  725. your

  726. sins

  727. and

  728. carry

  729. on

  730. life

  731. as

  732. normal.

  733. Our

  734. daily

  735. lives

  736. are

  737. changed

  738. after

  739. we

  740. have

  741. encountered

  742. Jesus.

  743. We

  744. cannot

  745. live

  746. like

  747. we

  748. did

  749. before.

  750. As

  751. followers

  752. of

  753. Jesus

  754. we

  755. have

  756. received

  757. a

  758. new

  759. heart

  760. because

  761. like

  762. in

  763. Colossians

    Colossians 3:3

  764. 3

  765. verse

  766. 3

  767. it

  768. says

  769. you

  770. died

  771. and

  772. your

  773. life

  774. is

  775. now

  776. hidden

  777. with

  778. Christ

  779. in

  780. God.

  781. Or

  782. back

  783. in

  784. chapter

  785. 2

  786. verse

  787. 12

  788. we

  789. have

  790. died

  791. with

  792. Christ

  793. or

  794. been

  795. buried

  796. with

  797. him

  798. in

  799. baptism

  800. and

  801. raised

  802. with

  803. him

  804. through

  805. your

  806. faith

  807. in

  808. the

  809. power

  810. of

  811. God

  812. who

  813. raised

  814. him

  815. from

  816. the

  817. dead.

  818. Paul

  819. puts it

  820. another way

  821. in chapter

  822. 1

  823. verse 21

  824. when he

  825. says

  826. once you

  827. were

  828. alienated

  829. from

  830. God

  831. and were

  832. enemies

  833. in your

  834. minds

  835. two

  836. two

  837. two

  838. things

  839. are clear

  840. from

  841. these

  842. passages

  843. one

  844. if we

  845. were

  846. dead

  847. and

  848. now

  849. we

  850. are

  851. alive

  852. or

  853. we

  854. can't

  855. live

  856. like

  857. we

  858. used

  859. to

  860. we

  861. can't

  862. live

  863. like

  864. dead

  865. people

  866. if

  867. we

  868. are

  869. alive

  870. if

  871. we

  872. were

  873. separated

  874. or

  875. alienated

  876. from

  877. God

  878. because

  879. of

  880. how

  881. we

  882. were

  883. living

  884. we

  885. cannot

  886. continue

  887. to

  888. live

  889. like

  890. that

  891. now

  892. we

  893. are

  894. different

  895. people

  896. brothers

  897. and

  898. sisters

  899. and

  900. friends

  901. there

  902. are

  903. no

  904. half

  905. measures

  906. here

  907. if

  908. there

  909. is

  910. sin

  911. in

  912. your

  913. life

  914. if

  915. you

  916. have

  917. idols

  918. which

  919. are

  920. not

  921. God

  922. if

  923. there

  924. are

  925. good

  926. things

  927. even

  928. good

  929. biblical

  930. things

  931. in

  932. your

  933. life

  934. that

  935. have

  936. become

  937. ultimate

  938. things

  939. then

  940. put

  941. them

  942. to

  943. death

  944. put

  945. off

  946. what

  947. belongs

  948. to

  949. your

  950. earthly

  951. nature

  952. someone

  953. close

  954. to

  955. me

  956. was

  957. admitted

  958. to a

  959. rehabilitation

  960. centre

  961. a while

  962. back

  963. they

  964. entered

  965. into

  966. the

  967. program

  968. because

  969. they

  970. felt

  971. they

  972. were

  973. overly

  974. dependent

  975. on

  976. alcohol

  977. once

  978. in

  979. there

  980. they

  981. were

  982. told

  983. that

  984. to

  985. beat

  986. it

  987. they

  988. must

  989. never

  990. drink

  991. alcohol

  992. again

  993. they

  994. must

  995. put

  996. it

  997. to

  998. death

  999. the

  1000. problem

  1001. was

  1002. that

  1003. they

  1004. didn't

  1005. believe

  1006. they

  1007. had

  1008. a

  1009. problem

  1010. they

  1011. just

  1012. had

  1013. a

  1014. temporary

  1015. or

  1016. an

  1017. over

  1018. dependency

  1019. on

  1020. it

  1021. a

  1022. little

  1023. night

  1024. cap

  1025. to help

  1026. them

  1027. unwind

  1028. and

  1029. to

  1030. sleep

  1031. by

  1032. the

  1033. time

  1034. they

  1035. left

  1036. the

  1037. centre

  1038. they

  1039. hadn't

  1040. had a

  1041. drink

  1042. in a

  1043. month

  1044. and so

  1045. they

  1046. didn't

  1047. feel like

  1048. they

  1049. needed

  1050. to

  1051. drink

  1052. again

  1053. which

  1054. was

  1055. great

  1056. for a

  1057. while

  1058. when

  1059. they

  1060. were

  1061. offered

  1062. a

  1063. drink

  1064. at a

  1065. party

  1066. they

  1067. could

  1068. easily

  1069. say

  1070. no

  1071. fast

  1072. forward

  1073. a year

  1074. and for

  1075. whatever

  1076. reason

  1077. they're

  1078. drinking

  1079. again

  1080. the

  1081. idol

  1082. or the

  1083. sin

  1084. of

  1085. pride

  1086. or

  1087. self

  1088. regulation

  1089. had

  1090. stopped

  1091. them

  1092. initially

  1093. calling

  1094. themselves

  1095. an

  1096. alcoholic

  1097. sin

  1098. had

  1099. blinded

  1100. them

  1101. to

  1102. their

  1103. weakness

  1104. to

  1105. the

  1106. earthly

  1107. nature

  1108. or

  1109. the

  1110. flesh

  1111. as

  1112. we

  1113. might

  1114. know

  1115. it

  1116. I

  1117. have

  1118. sat

  1119. through

  1120. addiction

  1121. lectures

  1122. counselling

  1123. sessions

  1124. support

  1125. group

  1126. meetings

  1127. I

  1128. have

  1129. seen

  1130. the

  1131. devastation

  1132. that

  1133. addiction

  1134. causes

  1135. to

  1136. families

  1137. and

  1138. to

  1139. relationships

  1140. the

  1141. first

  1142. three

  1143. steps

  1144. of

  1145. the

  1146. addiction

  1147. 12

  1148. step

  1149. programme

  1150. are

  1151. these

  1152. but

  1153. I

  1154. have

  1155. changed

  1156. the

  1157. substance

  1158. of

  1159. choice

  1160. to

  1161. the

  1162. word

  1163. sin

  1164. as

  1165. I

  1166. don't

  1167. believe

  1168. there

  1169. is

  1170. a

  1171. difference

  1172. step

  1173. one

  1174. we

  1175. admitted

  1176. that

  1177. we

  1178. were

  1179. powerless

  1180. over

  1181. sin

  1182. that

  1183. our

  1184. lives

  1185. had

  1186. become

  1187. unmanageable

  1188. step

  1189. two

  1190. we

  1191. came

  1192. to

  1193. believe

  1194. that

  1195. a

  1196. power

  1197. greater

  1198. than

  1199. ourselves

  1200. could

  1201. restore

  1202. us

  1203. step

  1204. three

  1205. we

  1206. made

  1207. a

  1208. decision

  1209. to

  1210. turn

  1211. our

  1212. will

  1213. and

  1214. our

  1215. lives

  1216. over

  1217. to

  1218. the

  1219. care

  1220. of

  1221. God

  1222. as

  1223. we

  1224. understood

  1225. him

  1226. sin

  1227. is

  1228. not

  1229. something

  1230. that

  1231. we

  1232. get

  1233. a

  1234. handle

  1235. on

  1236. or

  1237. learn

  1238. how

  1239. to

  1240. manage

  1241. sin

  1242. is

  1243. something

  1244. we

  1245. must

  1246. die

  1247. to

  1248. we

  1249. must

  1250. put

  1251. to

  1252. death

  1253. we

  1254. if

  1255. we

  1256. are

  1257. Christians

  1258. daily

  1259. need

  1260. to

  1261. admit

  1262. that

  1263. we

  1264. are

  1265. powerless

  1266. over

  1267. sin

  1268. that

  1269. Jesus

  1270. can

  1271. restore

  1272. us

  1273. and

  1274. I

  1275. would

  1276. add

  1277. bring

  1278. us

  1279. into

  1280. glory

  1281. and

  1282. that

  1283. daily

  1284. we

  1285. need

  1286. to

  1287. turn

  1288. our

  1289. lives

  1290. over

  1291. to

  1292. the

  1293. care

  1294. of

  1295. God

  1296. by

  1297. acknowledging

  1298. our

  1299. weakness

  1300. and

  1301. our

  1302. need

  1303. of

  1304. help

  1305. we

  1306. often

  1307. open

  1308. ourselves

  1309. up for

  1310. the

  1311. spirit

  1312. of

  1313. God

  1314. to

  1315. work

  1316. in

  1317. us

  1318. when

  1319. we

  1320. are

  1321. weak

  1322. he

  1323. is

  1324. strong

  1325. and

  1326. moves

  1327. in

  1328. and

  1329. takes

  1330. up

  1331. residence

  1332. in

  1333. us

  1334. it

  1335. is

  1336. when

  1337. the

  1338. spirit

  1339. is

  1340. at

  1341. work

  1342. that

  1343. we

  1344. are

  1345. able

  1346. to

  1347. look

  1348. up

  1349. and

  1350. set

  1351. our

  1352. minds

  1353. on

  1354. things

  1355. above

  1356. when

  1357. the

  1358. spirit

  1359. is

  1360. at

  1361. work

  1362. in

  1363. us

  1364. we

  1365. are

  1366. able

  1367. to

  1368. say

  1369. no

  1370. to

  1371. sin

  1372. and

  1373. put

  1374. off

  1375. or

  1376. put

  1377. to

  1378. death

  1379. that

  1380. which

  1381. is

  1382. our

  1383. sinful

  1384. earthly

  1385. nature

  1386. look

  1387. up

  1388. put

  1389. off

  1390. and

  1391. put

  1392. on

  1393. in

  1394. contrast

  1395. to

  1396. the

  1397. list

  1398. the

  1399. two

  1400. list

  1401. of

  1402. vices

  1403. that

  1404. we

  1405. read

  1406. in

  1407. verses

  1408. 5

  1409. to

  1410. 10

  1411. here

  1412. we

  1413. have

  1414. a

  1415. list

  1416. of

  1417. five

  1418. virtues

  1419. in

  1420. verse

  1421. 12

  1422. read

  1423. it

  1424. with

  1425. me

  1426. therefore

  1427. as

  1428. God's

  1429. chosen

  1430. people

  1431. holy

  1432. and

  1433. dearly

  1434. loved

  1435. clothe

  1436. yourself

  1437. with

  1438. compassion

  1439. kindness

  1440. humility

  1441. gentleness

  1442. and

  1443. patience

  1444. bear

  1445. with

  1446. each

  1447. other

  1448. and

  1449. forgive

  1450. one

  1451. another

  1452. if

  1453. any

  1454. of

  1455. you

  1456. has

  1457. a

  1458. grievance

  1459. against

  1460. someone

  1461. forgive

  1462. as

  1463. the

  1464. Lord

  1465. forgave

  1466. you

  1467. and

  1468. over

  1469. all

  1470. these

  1471. virtues

  1472. put

  1473. on

  1474. love

  1475. which

  1476. binds

  1477. them

  1478. all

  1479. together

  1480. in

  1481. perfect

  1482. unity

  1483. now

  1484. if

  1485. all

  1486. we

  1487. did

  1488. was

  1489. to

  1490. take

  1491. everything

  1492. off

  1493. in

  1494. our

  1495. lives

  1496. and

  1497. chastise

  1498. ourselves

  1499. all

  1500. the

  1501. time

  1502. and

  1503. criticise

  1504. ourselves

  1505. well

  1506. then

  1507. we

  1508. would

  1509. be

  1510. left

  1511. naked

  1512. so to

  1513. speak

  1514. we've

  1515. taken

  1516. everything

  1517. off

  1518. and are

  1519. left

  1520. bare

  1521. and

  1522. naked

  1523. but

  1524. thankfully

  1525. Paul

  1526. doesn't

  1527. leave it

  1528. there

  1529. I was

  1530. planning

  1531. on just

  1532. speaking

  1533. about

  1534. dealing

  1535. with

  1536. sin

  1537. this

  1538. morning

  1539. and

  1540. the

  1541. importance

  1542. of

  1543. taking

  1544. off

  1545. or

  1546. putting

  1547. to

  1548. death

  1549. sin

  1550. but

  1551. of

  1552. course

  1553. I

  1554. couldn't

  1555. just

  1556. leave

  1557. it

  1558. there

  1559. because

  1560. we'd

  1561. all

  1562. go home

  1563. naked

  1564. and

  1565. that

  1566. would

  1567. be

  1568. awkward

  1569. you can

  1570. laugh

  1571. if you

  1572. like

  1573. thanks

  1574. it

  1575. would

  1576. be

  1577. awkward

  1578. well

  1579. thankfully

  1580. Paul

  1581. doesn't

  1582. leave us

  1583. naked

  1584. and cold

  1585. and feeling

  1586. vulnerable

  1587. he tells

  1588. us to

  1589. clothe

  1590. ourselves

  1591. to put

  1592. on

  1593. look at

  1594. the passage

  1595. again

  1596. therefore

  1597. as God's

  1598. chosen

  1599. people

  1600. holy

  1601. and

  1602. dearly

  1603. loved

  1604. clothe

  1605. yourselves

  1606. with

  1607. compassion

  1608. kindness

  1609. humility

  1610. gentleness

  1611. and

  1612. patience

  1613. do you

  1614. see that

  1615. opening

  1616. line

  1617. as God's

  1618. chosen

  1619. people

  1620. as God's

  1621. chosen

  1622. people

  1623. we are

  1624. chosen

  1625. we are

  1626. holy

  1627. and we

  1628. are

  1629. dearly

  1630. loved

  1631. they are

  1632. special

  1633. titles

  1634. which

  1635. were used

  1636. of Israel

  1637. as God's

  1638. own

  1639. possession

  1640. in the

  1641. Old Testament

  1642. and they

  1643. are titles

  1644. that are

  1645. used

  1646. for Jesus

  1647. in the

  1648. New Testament

  1649. they are

  1650. used to

  1651. show how

  1652. similar

  1653. we as

  1654. Christians

  1655. are to

  1656. Christ

  1657. it is

  1658. Jesus

  1659. who is

  1660. the chosen

  1661. one

  1662. and so

  1663. it is

  1664. an

  1665. incredible

  1666. privilege

  1667. to be

  1668. addressed

  1669. in the

  1670. same

  1671. way

  1672. as

  1673. Christ

  1674. what

  1675. more

  1676. motivation

  1677. do we

  1678. need

  1679. to behave

  1680. in a

  1681. Christlike

  1682. way

  1683. these

  1684. virtues

  1685. or these

  1686. graces

  1687. which we

  1688. are to be

  1689. closed with

  1690. are seen

  1691. elsewhere

  1692. as

  1693. characteristics

  1694. of God

  1695. or Christ

  1696. and they

  1697. show us

  1698. how we

  1699. should behave

  1700. in our

  1701. dealings

  1702. with others

  1703. particularly

  1704. other

  1705. believers

  1706. three of

  1707. these

  1708. kindness

  1709. gentleness

  1710. and patience

  1711. are listed

  1712. in Galatians

    Galatians 5 chapter mention

  1713. chapter 5

  1714. as

  1715. fruits of

  1716. the spirit

  1717. in fact

  1718. all of

  1719. them are

  1720. characteristics

  1721. that we

  1722. show towards

  1723. other people

  1724. they're all

  1725. things that

  1726. we do

  1727. towards

  1728. other people

  1729. Paul is

  1730. showing us

  1731. how we

  1732. should be

  1733. relating to

  1734. each other

  1735. he has

  1736. just been

  1737. writing

  1738. so he's

  1739. been talking

  1740. about in

  1741. verse 11

  1742. here there

  1743. is no

  1744. gentile

  1745. or jew

  1746. circumcised

  1747. or uncircumcised

  1748. barbarian

  1749. slave

  1750. or free

  1751. but Christ

  1752. is all

  1753. and is

  1754. in all

  1755. so Paul

  1756. is showing

  1757. us how

  1758. we should

  1759. be

  1760. relating

  1761. to each

  1762. other

  1763. he's

  1764. just been

  1765. writing

  1766. about the

  1767. social

  1768. racial

  1769. and ethnic

  1770. differences

  1771. that should

  1772. not divide

  1773. the people

  1774. of God

  1775. he's been

  1776. saying that

  1777. lying can

  1778. affect the

  1779. whole community

  1780. of believers

  1781. and here we

  1782. are with

  1783. these five

  1784. graces

  1785. which also

  1786. tell us

  1787. that we

  1788. are to

  1789. clothe

  1790. ourselves

  1791. with those

  1792. things

  1793. which are

  1794. Christ-like

  1795. and important

  1796. for the unity

  1797. of Christian

  1798. community

  1799. Paul was

  1800. thinking of

  1801. the whole

  1802. body of

  1803. Christ

  1804. and the

  1805. importance

  1806. of its

  1807. unity

  1808. bear with

  1809. each other

  1810. and forgive

  1811. whatever

  1812. grievances

  1813. you have

  1814. with

  1815. each other

  1816. and then

  1817. comes the

  1818. sucker

  1819. punch

  1820. the ground

  1821. and the

  1822. motive

  1823. for

  1824. forgiving

  1825. is

  1826. just as

  1827. Christ

  1828. forgave

  1829. you

  1830. our sin

  1831. put Christ

  1832. on a cross

  1833. where he

  1834. died

  1835. and when

  1836. he was

  1837. there

  1838. he said

  1839. father

  1840. forgive

  1841. them

  1842. they don't

  1843. know what

  1844. they're

  1845. doing

  1846. if we have

  1847. a disagreement

  1848. with someone

  1849. in the church

  1850. we need to

  1851. forgive them

  1852. because Jesus

  1853. forgave us

  1854. but also

  1855. because we

  1856. need each

  1857. other to

  1858. hold us

  1859. up when

  1860. we fall

  1861. and when

  1862. we stumble

  1863. one major

  1864. step in

  1865. overcoming

  1866. addiction

  1867. is meeting

  1868. regularly

  1869. with other

  1870. addicts

  1871. through

  1872. anonymous

  1873. meetings

  1874. or through

  1875. sponsoring

  1876. programs

  1877. the sponsoring

  1878. program is

  1879. like having

  1880. an accountability

  1881. partner

  1882. someone you

  1883. can ring

  1884. in times

  1885. of weakness

  1886. or craving

  1887. someone who

  1888. knows what

  1889. you're going

  1890. through because

  1891. they have

  1892. been there

  1893. too

  1894. someone who

  1895. has benefited

  1896. from the

  1897. encouragement

  1898. of another

  1899. both of

  1900. these methods

  1901. of ongoing

  1902. accountability

  1903. are vital

  1904. for the

  1905. continuing

  1906. health

  1907. of the

  1908. addict

  1909. I hope

  1910. by now

  1911. you've seen

  1912. the correlation

  1913. to deal

  1914. with sin

  1915. effectively

  1916. we must

  1917. put it

  1918. to death

  1919. there can

  1920. be no

  1921. half measures

  1922. but we

  1923. must also

  1924. put on

  1925. the clothing

  1926. that has

  1927. been offered

  1928. to us

  1929. surround

  1930. ourselves

  1931. with the

  1932. fellowship

  1933. of other

  1934. believers

  1935. as we

  1936. navigate

  1937. life

  1938. after

  1939. repentance

  1940. turning

  1941. away

  1942. from sin

  1943. we

  1944. say it

  1945. time and

  1946. time again

  1947. that God

  1948. speaks

  1949. primarily

  1950. these

  1951. days

  1952. through

  1953. his

  1954. words

  1955. his

  1956. spirit

  1957. and through

  1958. his

  1959. people

  1960. the

  1961. church

  1962. of God

  1963. is a

  1964. vital

  1965. method

  1966. of

  1967. communicating

  1968. the

  1969. good

  1970. news

  1971. of

  1972. Jesus

  1973. to

  1974. the

  1975. world

  1976. and so

  1977. we

  1978. as the

  1979. church

  1980. of God

  1981. are tasked

  1982. with representing

  1983. it well

  1984. to do

  1985. this we

  1986. need to

  1987. be quick

  1988. to deal

  1989. with sin

  1990. to kill

  1991. it

  1992. to root

  1993. it out

  1994. to turn

  1995. away from

  1996. it

  1997. and also

  1998. to use

  1999. what the

  2000. Lord has

  2001. given us

  2002. to put

  2003. on that

  2004. which will

  2005. help us

  2006. he has

  2007. given us

  2008. his word

  2009. his spirit

  2010. and his

  2011. people for

  2012. a purpose

  2013. so my

  2014. charge to

  2015. you this

  2016. morning

  2017. is to

  2018. look up

  2019. fix

  2020. your eyes

  2021. on Jesus

  2022. in glory

  2023. put off

  2024. kill

  2025. whatever

  2026. takes

  2027. your focus

  2028. away

  2029. from

  2030. Jesus

  2031. in glory

  2032. and put

  2033. on

  2034. use

  2035. what we

  2036. have been

  2037. given

  2038. use the

  2039. people that

  2040. we have

  2041. been given

  2042. to bring

  2043. us

  2044. to Jesus

  2045. in glory

  2046. will you

  2047. pray with

  2048. me

  2049. heavenly

  2050. father

  2051. we

  2052. confess

  2053. that we

  2054. are weak

  2055. to the

  2056. sinful

  2057. nature

  2058. we take

  2059. the easy

  2060. option

  2061. more times

  2062. than we

  2063. should

  2064. we

  2065. confess

  2066. that we

  2067. have

  2068. idols

  2069. even good

  2070. things

  2071. which have

  2072. become

  2073. ultimate

  2074. things

  2075. and we

  2076. put them

  2077. before you

  2078. we

  2079. give

  2080. thanks

  2081. that you

  2082. have

  2083. demonstrated

  2084. forgiveness

  2085. on the

  2086. cross

  2087. that our

  2088. sin

  2089. has been

  2090. dealt

  2091. with

  2092. please help

  2093. us identify

  2094. the sin

  2095. in our

  2096. life

  2097. help us

  2098. by your

  2099. spirit

  2100. to put it

  2101. to death

  2102. to say

  2103. no to

  2104. it

  2105. help us

  2106. to put

  2107. on

  2108. truth

  2109. help us

  2110. to

  2111. use what

  2112. you have

  2113. given us

  2114. your word

  2115. your spirit

  2116. and your

  2117. church

  2118. to bring

  2119. us

  2120. to Jesus

  2121. in glory

  2122. fix our

  2123. eyes

  2124. on

  2125. Jesus

  2126. we

  2127. pray

  2128. in

  2129. Jesus

  2130. name

  2131. amen

  2132. we're

  2133. going to

  2134. close

  2135. with

  2136. one

  2137. final

  2138. song

  2139. see

  2140. key
