  1. Starting at verse 1.

  2. Good man, thanks.

  3. Okay, well let's read 1 Kings chapter 2 starting at verse 1.

    1 Kings 2 chapter mention

  4. We'll just wait.

  5. Good lad.

  6. Pens and Bibles at the ready. Here we go.

  7. 1 Kings chapter 2.

    1 Kings 2 chapter mention

  8. When the time drew near for David to die, he gave a charge to Solomon, his son.

  9. I'm about to go the way of all the earth, he said.

  10. So be strong. Act like a man.

  11. And observe what the Lord your God requires.

  12. Walk in obedience to him.

  13. Keep his decrees and commands, his laws and regulations as written in the law of Moses.

  14. Do this, so that you may prosper in all you do and wherever you go.

  15. And that the Lord may keep his promise to me.

  16. If your descendants watch how they live and if they walk faithfully before me with all their heart and soul, you will never fail to have a successor on the throne of Israel.

  17. Now you yourself know what Joab son of Zerah did to me.

  18. What he did to the two commanders of Israel's armies.

  19. Abner son of Ner and Amasa son of Jether.

  20. He killed them, shedding their blood in peacetime as if in battle.

  21. And with that blood he stained the belt around his waist and the sandals on his feet.

  22. Deal with him according to your wisdom.

  23. But do not let his grey head go down to the grave in peace.

  24. But show kindness to the sons of Barzillai of Gilead.

  25. And let them be among those who eat at your table.

  26. They stood by me when I fled from your brother Absalom.

  27. And remember, you have with you Shimei son of Gerah, the Benjamite from Bahuram.

  28. Who called down bitter curses on me the day I went to Manaheim.

  29. When he came down to meet me at the Jordan, I swore to him by the Lord,

  30. I will not put you to death by the sword.

  31. But now, do not consider him innocent.

  32. You are a man of wisdom.

  33. You will know what to do to him.

  34. Bring his grey head down to the grave in blood.

  35. Then David rested with his ancestors and was buried in the city of David.

  36. He had reigned for 40 years over Israel,

  37. 7 years in Hebron and 33 in Jerusalem.

  38. So Solomon sat on the throne of his father David,

  39. and his rule was firmly established.

  40. We are going to be looking at the whole of chapter 2,

  41. and we are going to pray and ask for God's help.

  42. Amen.

  43. Father, we thank you that you are Lord over all,

  44. and we can pray about all things.

  45. We pray for Marie's sister Kate,

  46. who has an operation tomorrow,

  47. that you would be with her and bring her through that successfully.

  48. Pray that in this time,

  49. she might call out to you,

  50. and find your love and your comfort.

  51. We pray for the start of the rock,

  52. and also rooted,

  53. coming up on Friday.

  54. We pray your help to all the leaders,

  55. as they share the good news that Jesus is King.

  56. And Father, just as we can pray for these things,

  57. we pray for us now,

  58. as we look at your word,

  59. that just as you draw near to us,

  60. you would come close by your Holy Spirit.

  61. Give us understanding and help

  62. that we might worship you as we should.

  63. We pray this in your name.

  64. Amen.

  65. Well, just over a year ago,

  66. Leo Varadkar was appointed as our new Taoiseach,

  67. our country's leader.

  68. replacing Enda Kenny.

  69. You might remember at his first announcement,

  70. he was accompanied by all the members of his party,

  71. all of them behind him,

  72. smiling and showing support for their new leader.

  73. But not all of them were very happy.

  74. A few days later,

  75. Leo announced his new cabinet.

  76. The old guard were swiftly removed,

  77. and the new brought in.

  78. You see,

  79. to secure your position of power,

  80. sometimes you must be ruthless

  81. and root out any rebels.

  82. Well, in our account of 1 Kings chapter 2,

    1 Kings 2 chapter mention

  83. a change of kingship is about to take place.

  84. Look at verse 1 of chapter 2.

  85. When the time drew near for David to die,

  86. he gave the charge to Solomon his son.

  87. So David is passing over the kingship to his son Solomon.

  88. But there's still this problem.

  89. There's a problem of a few disgruntled enemies within the kingdom.

  90. And it seems to be that if you are going to bring security in God's kingdom,

  91. then the king must be ruthless

  92. and root out any rebels.

  93. How can you have a kingdom of safety

  94. when there are enemies in your ranks?

  95. So as we look at chapter 2,

  96. we're going to see

  97. that God raises up his king

  98. to crush his enemies

  99. so that his kingdom is secure.

  100. That's the big theme.

  101. God raises up his king

  102. to crush his enemies

  103. so that his kingdom is secure.

  104. First, God's means of establishing a secure kingdom.

  105. God will secure his kingdom

  106. by raising up a king.

  107. But not just any king.

  108. A king who obeys God's words.

  109. Look at verse 2.

  110. David says,

  111. I'm about to go the way of all the earth.

  112. In other words, I'm about to die.

  113. So be strong and act like a man.

  114. And here's how a man should be.

  115. Observe what the Lord your God requires.

  116. Walk in obedience to him.

  117. Keep his decrees and commands,

  118. his laws and regulations,

  119. as were written in the law of Moses.

  120. Now David's command

  121. or his passing on of the kingship,

  122. yes, obey God's word,

  123. but he's only doing what God had commanded

  124. and recorded in the law of Moses.

  125. This is what was said there.

  126. God said to Moses,

  127. when the king takes the throne of his kingdom,

  128. he is to write for himself

  129. on a scroll of this law.

  130. It is to be with him

  131. and he is to read it all the days of his life

  132. and that he may revere the Lord his God

  133. and follow carefully all the words of this law

  134. and these decrees

  135. and do not consider himself better

  136. and turn from the law to the right

  137. or to the left.

  138. You see,

  139. obeying God's word

  140. ensured that everything was done

  141. God's way.

  142. Because as soon as we start ignoring God's word,

  143. well, that's when chaos and disorder happen.

  144. We only need to think back to the Garden of Eden.

  145. Disobeying God's word

  146. led to broken relationships

  147. and a broken world,

  148. the effects we're seeing today

  149. and experiencing in our own lives.

  150. So obedience was crucial

  151. and it will ensure a secure kingdom.

  152. Look at the rest of verse 3.

  153. David continues,

  154. Do this,

  155. that is,

  156. obey,

  157. follow the word of the Lord

  158. so that you may prosper

  159. in all that you do

  160. wherever you go

  161. and that the Lord may keep his promise to me.

  162. If your descendants

  163. watch how they live

  164. and if they walk faithfully before me

  165. with all their heart and soul,

  166. you will never fail

  167. to have a successor

  168. on the throne of Israel.

  169. Very simple,

  170. if the king obeys God's word,

  171. then the people,

  172. the king,

  173. and the kingdom

  174. will enjoy peace

  175. and prosperity,

  176. a kingdom of joy

  177. and happiness.

  178. But not just a king

  179. who obeys,

  180. but a king who acts justly.

  181. You see,

  182. David may be on his deathbed,

  183. but he knows a thing or two

  184. about security

  185. and about bringing peace

  186. to the kingdom.

  187. He gives orders

  188. about what to do

  189. with the kingdom's enemies

  190. and there seems to be

  191. a few of them.

  192. Look at verse 5.

  193. His final orders

  194. before he dies.

  195. Now you yourself know

  196. what Joab,

  197. son of Zariah,

  198. did to me.

  199. What he did to the two commanders

  200. of Israel's armies.

  201. Well,

  202. he had murdered them,

  203. hadn't he?

  204. What should he do in response?

  205. Verse 6.

  206. Deal with him

  207. according to your wisdom,

  208. but do not let his grey head

  209. go down to the grave

  210. in peace.

  211. Make him pay.

  212. Well,

  213. Joab wasn't the only one

  214. that he had to watch out for.

  215. Verse 8.

  216. And remember,

  217. you have with you

  218. Shimei,

  219. son of Gerah,

  220. the Benjamite,

  221. who called down

  222. bitter curses on me

  223. the day I went to Manaheim.

  224. And that was an occasion

  225. when David,

  226. although king,

  227. was being pushed out

  228. of the kingship.

  229. What should happen to him?

  230. Well,

  231. look at the end of verse 9.

  232. Bring his grey head

  233. down to the grave

  234. in blood.

  235. No mercy.

  236. Now,

  237. it's not everybody

  238. who's going to be treated

  239. like this.

  240. those who are faithful

  241. to the king

  242. and loyal to the kingdom.

  243. Well,

  244. look at verse 7.

  245. Show kindness

  246. to the sons

  247. of Barzillai

  248. of Gilead

  249. and let them

  250. be among those

  251. who eat at your table.

  252. Welcome them,

  253. in other words,

  254. because they stood

  255. by me

  256. when I fled

  257. from your brother

  258. Absalom.

  259. Now,

  260. we must remember

  261. that the kings

  262. like David and Solomon

  263. are only God's

  264. representatives.

  265. It's not their kingdom

  266. to do as they please.

  267. They are to obey

  268. God's word

  269. and act justly.

  270. You see,

  271. we can't have a kingdom

  272. without rules.

  273. Rules is what

  274. keeps the peace.

  275. Rules of the king

  276. is what brings order.

  277. and keeps

  278. everything together

  279. so people can live

  280. in harmony

  281. and joy.

  282. You might know

  283. the story

  284. Lord of the Flies.

  285. It's a fictional story

  286. about a group

  287. of well-educated

  288. English boys

  289. who get marooned

  290. on an island.

  291. They're there

  292. without any adult

  293. supervision,

  294. no leadership,

  295. and then disorder

  296. and chaos

  297. begin to reign.

  298. The children

  299. who are all there

  300. together

  301. begin to bully

  302. each other.

  303. They start fighting.

  304. Little gangs

  305. are formed

  306. as they attack

  307. each other.

  308. And one of the children,

  309. one of the main characters,

  310. his nickname

  311. is Piggy,

  312. kept on insisting

  313. on the need

  314. for rules.

  315. This is what he said

  316. to the group.

  317. He said,

  318. we've got to have rules

  319. and obey them.

  320. After all,

  321. we're not savages.

  322. Which is better?

  323. To have rules

  324. and agree?

  325. Or go hunting

  326. and break things up?

  327. Well,

  328. a little while later,

  329. he got his answer.

  330. Not long after,

  331. Piggy was violently

  332. killed

  333. and murdered

  334. by the other children.

  335. The story

  336. is a social comment

  337. on what happens

  338. when we remove

  339. authority

  340. from society.

  341. Anarchy.

  342. All hell

  343. breaks loose.

  344. And so David,

  345. as he passes

  346. on the kingdom

  347. to Solomon,

  348. is saying,

  349. if we are to establish

  350. a kingdom of security,

  351. then we need

  352. a king

  353. who obeys

  354. God's word

  355. and acts

  356. justly.

  357. A king

  358. who will bring

  359. about peace

  360. and order,

  361. joy

  362. and happiness.

  363. And that's

  364. what we begin

  365. to see happening

  366. through Solomon.

  367. Look at verse 12.

  368. So Solomon

  369. sat on the throne

  370. of his father David

  371. and his rule

  372. was firmly

  373. established.

  374. That's the kind

  375. of kingdom

  376. we all long for.

  377. So first,

  378. God's means

  379. of establishing

  380. a secure kingdom.

  381. Second,

  382. God's response

  383. to the enemies

  384. of the kingdom.

  385. Now the author

  386. wants us

  387. to know

  388. very clearly

  389. that Solomon

  390. is king

  391. and that his rule

  392. was firmly

  393. established.

  394. But it seems

  395. he wants us

  396. to know

  397. how it was done.

  398. Enemies

  399. must

  400. be dealt with.

  401. You might remember

  402. the three rebels

  403. of chapter 1.

  404. You can go back

  405. and have a look.

  406. Chapter 1,

  407. verse 7.

  408. Adonijah,

  409. he was the

  410. one who wanted

  411. to be king.

  412. Adonijah,

  413. verse 7,

  414. conferred with

  415. Joab,

  416. son of Zariah,

  417. and with

  418. Abiathar,

  419. the priest,

  420. and they gave

  421. him their

  422. support.

  423. Three rebels,

  424. and it seems

  425. they are still

  426. trouble

  427. in the kingdom.

  428. first,

  429. rebellion

  430. will not

  431. be tolerated.

  432. Adonijah

  433. has this

  434. great plan.

  435. Although Solomon

  436. is king,

  437. he's got

  438. a plan.

  439. He goes to

  440. the king's

  441. mother,

  442. in verse 13,

  443. we read this,

  444. to Bathsheba,

  445. and he's got

  446. this request.

  447. Look at

  448. verse 17

  449. of chapter 2.

  450. Chapter 2,

  451. verse 17.

  452. He goes to

  453. the king's

  454. mother,

  455. Bathsheba.

  456. Please ask

  457. king Solomon,

  458. he will not

  459. refuse you,

  460. to give me

  461. Abishag,

  462. the Shunammite,

  463. as my wife.

  464. Remember Abishag

  465. from chapter 1?

  466. That was the

  467. home help,

  468. as we described

  469. her,

  470. for David

  471. in his old age.

  472. It seems

  473. innocent enough,

  474. doesn't it?

  475. Maybe he

  476. doesn't have

  477. a wife.

  478. Maybe his

  479. toes are

  480. also cold.

  481. So Bathsheba

  482. goes off

  483. to the king

  484. with the

  485. request,

  486. but Solomon

  487. sees it

  488. for what it

  489. is.

  490. Verse 22.

  491. King Solomon

  492. answered his

  493. mother,

  494. Why do you

  495. request Abishag,

  496. the Shunammite,

  497. for Adonijah?

  498. You might as

  499. well request

  500. the kingdom

  501. for him.

  502. After all,

  503. he is my

  504. older brother.

  505. Yes,

  506. for him

  507. and for

  508. Abiathar,

  509. the priest,

  510. and Joab,

  511. son of Zariah.

  512. Now,

  513. we're not

  514. given all

  515. the political

  516. details of

  517. what it

  518. would mean

  519. if Abiathar

  520. took over

  521. David's

  522. carer

  523. as a

  524. wife,

  525. but it

  526. seems to

  527. be a

  528. scheme

  529. to take

  530. over the

  531. kingdom.

  532. He still

  533. wants to

  534. be the

  535. king.

  536. look back

  537. at verse

  538. 15 of

  539. chapter 2.

  540. As he

  541. talks to

  542. Bathsheba,

  543. he says,

  544. As you

  545. know,

  546. the kingdom

  547. was mine.

  548. It was

  549. my kingdom.

  550. All Israel

  551. looked to

  552. me as

  553. their king.

  554. I was

  555. the king.

  556. But things

  557. have changed

  558. and the

  559. kingdom has

  560. gone to

  561. my brother

  562. for it

  563. has come

  564. to him

  565. from the

  566. Lord.

  567. Lord.

  568. Well,

  569. the kingdom

  570. never was

  571. his and

  572. kingship was

  573. not his

  574. to take.

  575. And

  576. Solomon could

  577. see through

  578. his plan.

  579. Opposition

  580. to God's

  581. king will

  582. not be

  583. tolerated.

  584. Verse 23,

  585. Then King

  586. Solomon swore

  587. by the

  588. Lord,

  589. May God

  590. deal with

  591. me,

  592. be it

  593. ever so

  594. severely,

  595. if Adonijah

  596. does not

  597. pay with

  598. his life

  599. for this

  600. request.

  601. And now

  602. as surely

  603. as the

  604. Lord lives,

  605. he who

  606. has established

  607. me securely

  608. on the

  609. throne of

  610. my father

  611. David and

  612. has founded

  613. a dynasty

  614. for me

  615. as he

  616. promised,

  617. Adonijah

  618. shall be

  619. put to

  620. death

  621. today.

  622. So King

  623. Solomon gave

  624. orders to

  625. Benaniah,

  626. son of

  627. Jehoiada,

  628. and he

  629. struck down

  630. Adonijah

  631. and he

  632. died.

  633. Rebellion

  634. will not

  635. be

  636. tolerated.

  637. And

  638. second,

  639. promised

  640. justice

  641. will be

  642. done.

  643. So

  644. Adonijah

  645. has been

  646. dealt

  647. with.

  648. Then there

  649. was

  650. Abi

  651. Arthur,

  652. the

  653. priest.

  654. We

  655. read about

  656. him in

  657. verse 26.

  658. He was

  659. all part

  660. of the

  661. scheme

  662. to take

  663. over the

  664. kingdom.

  665. Now

  666. Solomon

  667. spares

  668. his life

  669. but he

  670. is removed

  671. from his

  672. position of

  673. service and

  674. influence.

  675. But notice

  676. why he's

  677. been removed.

  678. Have a

  679. look at

  680. verse 27.

  681. Solomon

  682. removed

  683. Abi

  684. Arthur from

  685. the priesthood

  686. of the

  687. Lord,

  688. fulfilling

  689. the word

  690. the Lord

  691. had spoken

  692. at Shiloh

  693. about the

  694. house of

  695. Eli.

  696. Now

  697. you might

  698. remember

  699. old Eli.

  700. We can

  701. read about

  702. him back

  703. in 1st

  704. Samuel.

  705. He had

  706. two sons,

  707. Hophni and

  708. Phinehas.

  709. They were

  710. priests but

  711. they were

  712. rebellious.

  713. Rather than

  714. serving God

  715. and serving

  716. the people,

  717. they served

  718. themselves.

  719. They were a

  720. terrible pair.

  721. And at that

  722. time, it was

  723. about 100

  724. years before

  725. the events

  726. we're looking

  727. at here in

  728. 1 Kings,

  729. God had

  730. made a

  731. promise at

  732. that time

  733. that the

  734. disobedient

  735. priests would

  736. be dealt

  737. with and

  738. all those

  739. priests coming

  740. from the

  741. house of

  742. Eli or

  743. from the

  744. line of

  745. Eli would

  746. be punished.

  747. 100 years

  748. have passed.

  749. Verse 27.

  750. So Solomon

  751. removed

  752. Abi

  753. Arthur from

  754. the priesthood

  755. of the

  756. Lord,

  757. fulfilling

  758. the word

  759. of the

  760. Lord had

  761. spoken at

  762. Shiloh,

  763. even though

  764. it was 100

  765. years ago.

  766. about the

  767. house of

  768. Eli.

  769. God's

  770. justice may

  771. be delayed,

  772. but don't

  773. ever think

  774. that God

  775. has forgotten.

  776. He knows

  777. and he

  778. sees.

  779. Justice

  780. will be

  781. done.

  782. Enemies

  783. will be

  784. removed.

  785. And third,

  786. fake religion

  787. will not

  788. save you.

  789. So

  790. Adonijah

  791. has been

  792. put to

  793. death.

  794. Abi

  795. Arthur,

  796. the priest,

  797. has been

  798. removed.

  799. But what

  800. about the

  801. other one,

  802. the third

  803. rebel,

  804. Joab,

  805. the one

  806. who had

  807. murdered the

  808. king's

  809. commanders

  810. under David?

  811. Well,

  812. look at

  813. verse 28.

  814. When news

  815. reached

  816. Joab,

  817. obviously the

  818. news of

  819. what happened

  820. to Abi

  821. Arthur and

  822. Adonijah,

  823. Joab,

  824. who had

  825. conspired

  826. with them,

  827. well,

  828. he fled

  829. to the

  830. tent of

  831. the Lord.

  832. The tent

  833. of the

  834. Lord was

  835. the meeting

  836. place where

  837. people went

  838. to meet

  839. with God.

  840. And he

  841. took hold

  842. of the

  843. horns of

  844. the altar.

  845. This is the

  846. place where

  847. the sacrifices

  848. took place.

  849. So he

  850. went running

  851. to the

  852. tent of

  853. the Lord

  854. and took

  855. hold of

  856. the horns

  857. of the

  858. altar.

  859. It seems

  860. that Joab

  861. has all of a

  862. sudden got

  863. very religious.

  864. He

  865. begins to

  866. say his

  867. prayers.

  868. Somehow he

  869. thinks as if,

  870. well, if I go

  871. to church,

  872. that'll be

  873. enough.

  874. That's going

  875. to keep

  876. me safe.

  877. Verse 29.

  878. King Solomon

  879. was told that

  880. Joab had

  881. fled to the

  882. tent of the

  883. Lord and

  884. was beside

  885. the altar.

  886. Then Solomon

  887. ordered

  888. Benaniah,

  889. son of

  890. Jehoiada,

  891. go and

  892. strike him

  893. down.

  894. So Benaniah

  895. entered the

  896. tent of the

  897. Lord and

  898. said to

  899. Joab.

  900. The king

  901. says,

  902. come out.

  903. But he

  904. answered,

  905. no, I

  906. will die

  907. here.

  908. Benaniah

  909. reported to

  910. the king,

  911. this is how

  912. Joab

  913. answered me.

  914. You see,

  915. he thinks

  916. that if he

  917. stays in

  918. the meeting

  919. place of

  920. God,

  921. well, he's

  922. going to

  923. be safe.

  924. Nobody's

  925. going to

  926. come in

  927. here.

  928. My new

  929. religion is

  930. going to

  931. save me.

  932. Well, God

  933. sees through

  934. the sham.

  935. He sees

  936. the heart

  937. of Joab.

  938. God

  939. longs for

  940. submission,

  941. not fake

  942. religion.

  943. Joab's

  944. church

  945. going is

  946. not going

  947. to save

  948. him,

  949. verse 33.

  950. May the

  951. guilt of

  952. their blood

  953. rest on

  954. the head

  955. of Joab

  956. and his

  957. descendants

  958. forever.

  959. But on

  960. David and

  961. his descendants,

  962. his house

  963. and his

  964. throne,

  965. may there

  966. be the

  967. Lord's

  968. peace

  969. forever.

  970. So Ben

  971. and I,

  972. a son of

  973. Jehoiada,

  974. went up

  975. and struck

  976. down Joab

  977. and killed

  978. him.

  979. And he

  980. was buried

  981. at his

  982. home out

  983. in the

  984. country.

  985. You see,

  986. to secure

  987. the kingdom,

  988. the king

  989. must be

  990. ruthless

  991. and root

  992. out rebels.

  993. You can't

  994. have peace

  995. and security

  996. with constant

  997. threats from

  998. your enemies.

  999. Enemies of

  1000. the kingdom

  1001. can't be

  1002. tolerated,

  1003. so the

  1004. king deals

  1005. with his

  1006. enemies.

  1007. Now it's

  1008. vital that

  1009. we don't

  1010. just keep

  1011. this as

  1012. a story

  1013. in the

  1014. past.

  1015. This is

  1016. something

  1017. yet to

  1018. come.

  1019. You see,

  1020. what Solomon

  1021. did to his

  1022. enemies

  1023. nationally

  1024. is what

  1025. God's

  1026. true king

  1027. will do

  1028. universally.

  1029. remember

  1030. what Jesus

  1031. said,

  1032. speaking about

  1033. the kingdom

  1034. of God?

  1035. You can

  1036. follow on

  1037. the screen.

  1038. So it

  1039. will be

  1040. at the

  1041. end of

  1042. the age.

  1043. The

  1044. Son of

  1045. Man,

  1046. that is

  1047. Jesus,

  1048. will send

  1049. out his

  1050. angels and

  1051. they will

  1052. weed out

  1053. of his

  1054. kingdom

  1055. everything

  1056. that causes

  1057. sin and

  1058. all who

  1059. do evil.

  1060. they will

  1061. throw them

  1062. into the

  1063. blazing

  1064. furnace and

  1065. there will

  1066. be weeping

  1067. and gnashing

  1068. of teeth.

  1069. Then the

  1070. righteous will

  1071. shine like

  1072. the sun in

  1073. the kingdom

  1074. of their

  1075. father.

  1076. You see,

  1077. rebellion

  1078. against God's

  1079. king,

  1080. Jesus Christ,

  1081. will not

  1082. be tolerated.

  1083. He is the

  1084. true king

  1085. and we

  1086. must submit

  1087. to him.

  1088. God is

  1089. patient.

  1090. His

  1091. justice

  1092. may be

  1093. delayed,

  1094. but what

  1095. he has

  1096. promised,

  1097. yes,

  1098. it will

  1099. come to

  1100. pass.

  1101. And there's

  1102. no hiding

  1103. from the

  1104. king.

  1105. Fake

  1106. religion is

  1107. not going

  1108. to work.

  1109. He

  1110. sees the

  1111. heart

  1112. and he

  1113. will crush

  1114. his enemies

  1115. so that

  1116. his kingdom

  1117. is secure.

  1118. God's

  1119. means of

  1120. establishing

  1121. a secure

  1122. kingdom,

  1123. his

  1124. response

  1125. to

  1126. enemies

  1127. of the

  1128. kingdom,

  1129. and then

  1130. third,

  1131. God's

  1132. demands

  1133. for people

  1134. who live

  1135. in the

  1136. kingdom.

  1137. You see,

  1138. if we are

  1139. going to

  1140. live in

  1141. God's

  1142. kingdom,

  1143. if we are

  1144. going to

  1145. experience

  1146. and enjoy

  1147. his

  1148. security,

  1149. there must

  1150. be loyalty

  1151. and devotion.

  1152. There's one

  1153. other character

  1154. that we have

  1155. to deal

  1156. with that

  1157. we haven't

  1158. looked at.

  1159. He comes

  1160. at the

  1161. end of

  1162. chapter 2,

  1163. Shimei.

  1164. David

  1165. didn't

  1166. trust him,

  1167. always had

  1168. a question

  1169. mark over

  1170. his head,

  1171. and Solomon

  1172. is unsure

  1173. about his

  1174. allegiance.

  1175. Verse 36,

  1176. Then the

  1177. king sent

  1178. for Shimei

  1179. and said

  1180. to him,

  1181. Build

  1182. yourself a

  1183. house in

  1184. Jerusalem

  1185. and live

  1186. there,

  1187. but do

  1188. not go

  1189. anywhere

  1190. else.

  1191. The day

  1192. you leave

  1193. and cross

  1194. the Kidron

  1195. Valley,

  1196. so if

  1197. you leave

  1198. the city,

  1199. you can

  1200. be sure

  1201. you will

  1202. die.

  1203. Your blood

  1204. will be on

  1205. your own

  1206. head.

  1207. Shimei

  1208. answered the

  1209. king,

  1210. What you

  1211. say is

  1212. good.

  1213. Your

  1214. servant

  1215. will do

  1216. as my

  1217. lord the

  1218. king has

  1219. said.

  1220. And Shimei

  1221. stayed in

  1222. Jerusalem for

  1223. a long

  1224. time.

  1225. It's a

  1226. test of

  1227. loyalty.

  1228. Serve the

  1229. king,

  1230. obey the

  1231. king,

  1232. live for

  1233. the king,

  1234. and you

  1235. will enjoy

  1236. the kingdom.

  1237. But,

  1238. verse 39,

  1239. three years

  1240. later,

  1241. two of

  1242. Shimei's

  1243. slaves ran

  1244. off to

  1245. Achish,

  1246. son of

  1247. Macca,

  1248. king of

  1249. Gath,

  1250. and Shimei

  1251. was told,

  1252. your slaves

  1253. are in

  1254. Gath.

  1255. At this,

  1256. he saddled

  1257. his donkey,

  1258. left the

  1259. city,

  1260. and went

  1261. to Achish

  1262. in Gath

  1263. in search

  1264. of his

  1265. slaves.

  1266. So Shimei

  1267. went away

  1268. and brought

  1269. the slaves

  1270. back from

  1271. Gath.

  1272. Now,

  1273. it seems

  1274. okay,

  1275. doesn't it?

  1276. Reasonable.

  1277. He's lost

  1278. some of

  1279. his workers,

  1280. he's out

  1281. of pocket.

  1282. That means

  1283. going outside

  1284. the city

  1285. to go and

  1286. get them,

  1287. but in

  1288. such

  1289. circumstances,

  1290. Shimei

  1291. reasons that

  1292. loyalty to

  1293. the kingdom

  1294. in this

  1295. case is

  1296. optional.

  1297. It seems

  1298. he was more

  1299. interested in,

  1300. well,

  1301. not obeying

  1302. what the

  1303. king said,

  1304. but securing

  1305. his own

  1306. little kingdom.

  1307. Because when

  1308. something else

  1309. comes along

  1310. that's more

  1311. important,

  1312. like securing

  1313. a career,

  1314. finding our

  1315. husband or

  1316. wife,

  1317. securing our

  1318. retirement fund,

  1319. well,

  1320. then it's

  1321. okay just to

  1322. put the

  1323. kingdom on

  1324. hold and

  1325. put it on

  1326. the back

  1327. seat.

  1328. So often,

  1329. loyalty to

  1330. the king

  1331. is optional.

  1332. But

  1333. disobedience

  1334. to the

  1335. king's

  1336. word is

  1337. treason.

  1338. It's

  1339. saying no

  1340. to the

  1341. king of

  1342. the world.

  1343. Verse 42,

  1344. the king

  1345. summoned

  1346. Shimei and

  1347. said to

  1348. him,

  1349. did I not

  1350. make you

  1351. swear by

  1352. the Lord

  1353. and warn

  1354. you?

  1355. On the

  1356. day you

  1357. leave to

  1358. go anywhere

  1359. else,

  1360. you can be

  1361. sure you

  1362. will die.

  1363. At that

  1364. time you

  1365. said to

  1366. me,

  1367. what you

  1368. say is

  1369. good,

  1370. I will

  1371. obey.

  1372. Why

  1373. then did

  1374. you not

  1375. keep your

  1376. oath to

  1377. your Lord

  1378. and obey

  1379. the command

  1380. I gave

  1381. you?

  1382. Verse 46,

  1383. then the

  1384. king gave

  1385. the order

  1386. to Ben

  1387. and I,

  1388. son of

  1389. Jehoiada,

  1390. and he

  1391. went out

  1392. and struck

  1393. Shimei

  1394. down,

  1395. and he

  1396. died.

  1397. The

  1398. kingdom

  1399. was now

  1400. established

  1401. in Solomon's

  1402. hands.

  1403. Now we

  1404. might read

  1405. that and

  1406. think the

  1407. king's

  1408. orders were

  1409. a bit

  1410. restrictive

  1411. and a

  1412. bit harsh,

  1413. and we

  1414. can gripe

  1415. and complain

  1416. and say,

  1417. I don't

  1418. like this

  1419. bit of

  1420. the story.

  1421. But the

  1422. king's

  1423. word,

  1424. no matter

  1425. how difficult

  1426. it is,

  1427. no matter

  1428. what our

  1429. reasoning may

  1430. be,

  1431. is always

  1432. right and

  1433. best for

  1434. us.

  1435. It seems

  1436. that Shimei

  1437. has something

  1438. to teach

  1439. us.

  1440. And here

  1441. it is.

  1442. Don't

  1443. sacrifice the

  1444. kingdom of

  1445. God for

  1446. the sake

  1447. of security

  1448. today.

  1449. Don't

  1450. sacrifice the

  1451. kingdom of

  1452. God for

  1453. the sake

  1454. of a

  1455. comfortable

  1456. life today.

  1457. You see,

  1458. the same

  1459. message would

  1460. be echoed

  1461. years later

  1462. as Jesus

  1463. spoke to

  1464. his

  1465. disciples.

  1466. Remember

  1467. what he

  1468. said?

  1469. What good

  1470. is it for

  1471. someone to

  1472. gain the

  1473. whole world

  1474. yet forfeit

  1475. their soul?

  1476. If anyone

  1477. is ashamed

  1478. of me and

  1479. my words in

  1480. this adulterous

  1481. and sinful

  1482. generation,

  1483. the Son of

  1484. Man will be

  1485. ashamed of

  1486. them when

  1487. he comes in

  1488. his Father's

  1489. glory and

  1490. with the

  1491. holy angels.

  1492. you see,

  1493. the king

  1494. demands

  1495. total

  1496. allegiance

  1497. and

  1498. absolute

  1499. loyalty.

  1500. So,

  1501. we can

  1502. say the

  1503. kingdom of

  1504. God is

  1505. secure,

  1506. but it

  1507. is not

  1508. safe.

  1509. We can't

  1510. say I'm

  1511. living in

  1512. the kingdom

  1513. and at

  1514. the same

  1515. time living

  1516. as I

  1517. please.

  1518. God will

  1519. raise up

  1520. his king

  1521. who will

  1522. crush his

  1523. enemies so

  1524. that his

  1525. kingdom is

  1526. secure.

  1527. So,

  1528. how can I

  1529. be secure

  1530. in God's

  1531. kingdom?

  1532. Because as I

  1533. read through

  1534. chapter 2,

  1535. I realise

  1536. that,

  1537. well,

  1538. I'm just

  1539. like Shimei.

  1540. So often

  1541. I'm more

  1542. interested in

  1543. my own

  1544. kingdom.

  1545. I rebel

  1546. against the

  1547. true king

  1548. Jesus Christ

  1549. just like

  1550. Abiathar and

  1551. Joab.

  1552. How can we

  1553. live in

  1554. God's

  1555. kingdom in

  1556. confidence and

  1557. without fear of

  1558. the king's

  1559. justice?

  1560. Well,

  1561. the answer is

  1562. simple.

  1563. We bow in

  1564. submission to

  1565. God's true

  1566. king,

  1567. Jesus Christ.

  1568. Christ.

  1569. We bow to

  1570. the one

  1571. who has

  1572. defeated and

  1573. destroyed our

  1574. greatest enemy,

  1575. the greatest

  1576. enemy of the

  1577. kingdom,

  1578. Satan himself,

  1579. who destroyed

  1580. him,

  1581. disarming him

  1582. through the

  1583. cross,

  1584. rising again

  1585. from the

  1586. grave,

  1587. defeating death

  1588. itself.

  1589. Here is

  1590. the true

  1591. king who

  1592. defeats our

  1593. one true

  1594. enemy.

  1595. And as we

  1596. bow in

  1597. surrender,

  1598. as we give

  1599. up the

  1600. fight,

  1601. well,

  1602. we find from

  1603. this king

  1604. grace and

  1605. mercy and

  1606. forgiveness.

  1607. A loving

  1608. king who no

  1609. longer treats

  1610. us as enemies,

  1611. but now

  1612. welcomes and

  1613. treasures us as

  1614. children of the

  1615. kingdom for all

  1616. eternity.

  1617. Submission is

  1618. not a one-off

  1619. event.

  1620. It is a daily

  1621. act of repentance

  1622. for all his

  1623. disciples,

  1624. as we daily

  1625. surrender our

  1626. will to his

  1627. will and

  1628. seek his

  1629. priorities over

  1630. ours,

  1631. who seek

  1632. first his

  1633. kingdom above

  1634. our own.

  1635. bow in

  1636. submission to

  1637. the king

  1638. and enjoy

  1639. the treasures

  1640. of the

  1641. kingdom.

  1642. Let us

  1643. pray.

  1644. Let us

  1645. pray.

  1646. Let us

  1647. pray.

1648. Lord God, once again you remind us through your word

  1649. of who you are,

  1650. that you are king.

1651. So right now we confess

1652. we are sorry for the times we have rebelled against you.

  1653. We bow in submission.

1654. We surrender our wills to you.

1655. We ask that you would give us your Holy Spirit

1656. that we might prioritize and seek first your kingdom.

  1657. Thank you for Jesus.

1658. Thank you that he has defeated

1659. the true and great enemy, Satan himself.

1660. So that we might enter into your kingdom

1661. and know peace and joy and security with you.

1662. We ask this in Jesus' name.

  1663. Amen.

  1664. Amen.

1665. Well, in a moment we are going to share the Lord's Supper

1666. around what we can call the King's Table,

1667. the King's invitation to all his followers,

1668. to all those who love him and obey him,

1669. to share in the meal with the King.

1670. And in preparation we're going to sing,

1671. which reminds us that God is our servant king,

1672. the one who gives his life for us

1673. and calls us now to follow him,

  1674. to bow in submission,

1675. to bring our lives as a daily offering

1676. of worship to the servant king.

1677. Let's stand as we sing.

  1678. Amen.

  1679. Amen.

  1680. Amen.

  1681. Amen.

  1682. Amen.

  1683. Amen.

  1684. Amen.

  1685. Amen.

  1686. Amen.

  1687. Amen.

  1688. Amen.

  1689. Amen.
