  1. Okay, our reading is 1 Kings chapter 3. I'm just going to read from verses 1 to 15.

    1 Kings 3 chapter mention

  2. And that's on page 337 of the Church Bible.

  3. So 1 Kings chapter 3.

    1 Kings 3 chapter mention

  4. Solomon made an alliance with Pharaoh, king of Egypt, and married his daughter.

  5. He brought her to the city of David until he finished building his palace and the temple of the Lord and the wall around Jerusalem.

  6. The people, however, were still sacrificing at the high places because the temple had not yet been built for the name of the Lord.

  7. Solomon showed his love for the Lord by walking according to the instructions given him by his father David,

  8. except that he offered sacrifices and burned incense on the high places.

  9. The king went to Gibeon to offer sacrifices, for that was the most important high place,

  10. and Solomon offered a thousand burnt offerings on that altar.

  11. At Gibeon, the Lord appeared to Solomon during the night in a dream, and God said,

  12. Ask for whatever you want me to give you.

  13. Solomon answered,

  14. You have shown great kindness to your servant, my father David, because he was faithful to you,

  15. and righteous and upright in heart.

  16. You have continued this great kindness to him,

  17. and have given him a son to sit on his throne this very day.

  18. Now, Lord my God, you have made your servant king in place of my father David.

  19. But I am only a little child, and do not know how to carry out my duties.

  20. Your servant is here among the people you have chosen,

  21. a great people, too numerous to count or number.

  22. So give your servant a discerning heart to govern your people,

  23. and to distinguish between right and wrong.

  24. For who is able to govern this great people of yours?

  25. The Lord is pleased that Solomon had asked for this.

  26. So God said to him,

  27. Since you have asked for this, and not for long life or wealth for yourself,

  28. nor have asked for the death of your enemies,

  29. but for discernment in administering justice,

  30. I will do what you have asked.

  31. I will give you a wise and discerning heart,

  32. so there will never have been anyone like you, nor will there ever be.

  33. Moreover, I will give you what you have not asked for,

  34. both wealth and honor,

  35. so that in your lifetime you will have no equal among kings.

  36. And if you walk in obedience to me,

  37. and keep my decrees and commands as David your father did,

  38. I will give you a long life.

  39. Then Solomon awoke,

  40. and he realized it had been a dream.

  41. He returned to Jerusalem,

  42. stood before the ark of the Lord's covenant,

  43. and sacrificed burnt offerings and fellowship offerings.

  44. Then he gave a feast for all his court.

  45. Thanks very much, Chris.

  46. I think they ran out of little notes,

  47. so the two guys,

  48. the younger people,

  49. mightn't have any,

  50. so if you're an older person,

  51. you don't mind just giving one to one of the guys,

  52. if you could just...

  53. Oh, thanks, Sandra.

  54. Yeah.

  55. Thank you very much.

  56. Thanks.

  57. Well, let's pray.

  58. Father, you are good,

  59. and you are generous.

  60. So help us now.

  61. Give life through your words.

  62. Give us more of Christ, we pray.

  63. We ask this in Jesus' name.

  64. Amen.

  65. Well, if you could ask for anything you wanted,

  66. and you knew you would get it,

  67. what would you ask for?

  68. What do you most want in your life?

  69. You can ask for whatever you like,

  70. and you know you're going to get it.

  71. What are you going to ask for?

  72. Well, in the true account of King Solomon,

  73. God comes to Solomon with an offer.

  74. Have a look at verse 5 of chapter 3,

  75. the end of verse 5.

  76. Ask for whatever you want me to give you.

  77. Whatever you want,

  78. just ask me.

  79. Well, Solomon asked for wisdom.

  80. Have a look at verse 12.

  81. God responds,

  82. I will do what you have asked.

  83. I will give you a wise and discerning heart.

  84. And jump over to chapter 4, verse 29.

  85. God gave Solomon wisdom and very great insight,

  86. and a breadth of understanding

  87. as measureless as the sand on the seashore.

  88. Solomon's wisdom was greater than the wisdom

  89. of all the people of the East.

  90. And greater than all the wisdom of Egypt.

  91. What would you ask God for?

  92. Well, let's put it another way.

  93. What do you ask God for?

  94. You see, if Solomon is going to rule the kingdom well,

  95. well, he needs God's wisdom.

  96. And if we are to enjoy life in God's kingdom,

  97. if we're going to receive the blessings of God's kingdom,

  98. well, then we too need wisdom.

  99. So, three things we're going to look at.

  100. First, discerning what true wisdom is.

  101. I think the first part of chapter 3

  102. shows us there's two kinds of wisdom.

  103. There is a worldly wisdom.

  104. Look at chapter 3, verse 1.

  105. Solomon has just started his kingship,

  106. and he gets straight down to work.

  107. Verse 1.

  108. Solomon made an alliance with Pharaoh,

  109. king of Egypt,

  110. and married his daughter.

  111. Seems like a good move, doesn't it?

  112. Make friends with your enemies

  113. by marrying off one of their daughters.

  114. Politically, it all makes sense.

  115. Build good allies with the surrounding nations.

  116. And then there seems to be something else that's wise in verse 2.

  117. We're told there the people, however,

  118. were still sacrificing at the high places

  119. because a temple had not yet been built

  120. for the name of the Lord.

  121. Well, everything in its own time.

  122. The temple will be built.

  123. We'll see that in chapter 6.

  124. But for now, it seems Solomon is content

  125. with worship at the high places.

  126. These high places were literally on high mountains,

  127. but they were old pagan worship sites.

  128. Religiously, it all seems to make sense.

  129. There's no temple,

  130. so let's keep all the people happy,

  131. especially those of, you know, pagan religions,

  132. and we'll all worship on the high places.

  133. Now, it all seems quite wise.

  134. Wisdom of the world is measured by things like

  135. good business deals and keeping people happy.

  136. For others, wisdom is intellectual ability

  137. or material success and social status.

  138. If we have these,

  139. well, then we are exceedingly wise.

  140. Well, while some of them may be good

  141. and nothing wrong with some,

  142. it's worldly wisdom.

  143. There is another kind of wisdom we should seek.

  144. Godly wisdom.

  145. Look at verse 3.

  146. Solomon showed his love for the Lord

  147. by walking according to the instructions

  148. given him by his father David.

  149. Do you remember those instructions

  150. that David had given?

  151. Have a look back at chapter 2, verse 3.

  152. As David was handing on the kingship,

  153. he gave this reminder,

  154. this command.

  155. He says,

  156. Observe what the Lord your God requires.

  157. Walk in obedience to him.

  158. Keep his decrees and commands,

  159. his laws and regulations,

  160. as written in the law of Moses.

  161. Chapter 3, verse 3.

  162. So, well, Solomon showed his love for the Lord

  163. by walking according to the instructions

  164. given him by his father David.

  165. Except,

  166. except that he offered sacrifices

  167. and burned incense on the high places.

  168. You see, God's word was very clear

  169. about worshipping at the high places.

  170. And God's word was also very clear

  171. about marrying and making alliances

  172. with foreign nations.

  173. It was clear.

  174. God said,

  175. No!

  176. These foreign nations

  177. and pagan religions,

  178. well, they're going to lead you away from God.

  179. Don't do it.

  180. So, godly wisdom

  181. is not just knowing

  182. what God's word says.

  183. It's putting God's word into practice.

  184. Solomon,

  185. Solomon, obviously,

  186. from verse 3,

  187. knows about God's word,

  188. but it's about putting it into practice.

  189. We might know every Bible story.

  190. We can know our eschatology

  191. and our soteriology,

  192. but mere knowledge of God's word

  193. is not wisdom.

  194. It's not just knowing what God says.

  195. Wisdom is obeying God's word

  196. and putting God's word into practice.

  197. True wisdom,

  198. the wisdom from above,

  199. is wisdom that enables us

  200. to live life God's way

  201. and choose the things

  202. that are right and best for us.

  203. Remember the words of Jesus?

  204. Therefore,

  205. everyone who hears these words of mine

  206. and puts them into practice

  207. is like a wise man

  208. who built his house on the rock.

  209. The rains came down,

  210. the streams rose,

  211. the winds blew

  212. and beat against that house,

  213. yet it did not fall

  214. because it had its foundation

  215. on the rock.

  216. That rock is the wisdom

  217. of putting God's word

  218. into practice.

  219. So,

  220. discerning what true wisdom is.

  221. Then receiving true wisdom from God.

  222. Solomon, well,

  223. he was a bit unwise,

  224. wasn't he,

  225. in some of his decisions.

  226. But that doesn't hinder

  227. God's goodness to his people.

  228. Look at verse 5,

  229. chapter 3.

  230. At Gibeon,

  231. so here's Solomon

  232. carrying out his sacrifices

  233. on one of the old pagan sites,

  234. which he had been told not to do.

  235. At Gibeon,

  236. the Lord appeared to Solomon

  237. during the night in a dream

  238. and God said,

  239. ask for whatever you want me

  240. to give you.

  241. What amazing generosity.

  242. Solomon's prayer

  243. that follows

  244. is very instructive

  245. to us

  246. in terms of

  247. receiving wisdom.

  248. Look at how

  249. Solomon prays.

  250. Solomon doesn't launch into

  251. an

  252. I want

  253. and give me this.

  254. No,

  255. look how he starts,

  256. verse 6.

  257. Solomon answered,

  258. you have shown

  259. great kindness

  260. to your servant,

  261. my father David,

  262. because he was

  263. faithful to you

  264. and righteous

  265. and upright in heart.

  266. You have continued

  267. this great kindness

  268. to him

  269. and have given him

  270. a son to sit

  271. on his throne

  272. to this very day.

  273. God is not

  274. a begrudging,

  275. selfish,

  276. mean tyrant.

  277. he's not

  278. the kind

  279. of God

  280. who is constantly

  281. looking out

  282. for faults

  283. so that he can

  284. refuse our requests.

  285. No,

  286. God is a

  287. kind

  288. God

  289. who acts

  290. in great

  291. mercy.

  292. God's offer

  293. is open

  294. and generous.

  295. Ask for whatever

  296. you want me

  297. to give you.

  298. In fact,

  299. God is so kind

  300. that he gives

  301. to Solomon

  302. more than he asks.

  303. Look down

  304. at verse 13.

  305. God answers,

  306. moreover,

  307. I will give you

  308. what you have

  309. not asked for,

  310. both wealth

  311. and honour,

  312. so that in your

  313. lifetime you will

  314. have no equal

  315. among kings.

  316. Sometimes

  317. we don't

  318. ask

  319. and we don't

  320. receive

  321. because we

  322. have a wrong

  323. view of God.

  324. We think

  325. he's mean.

  326. We maybe

  327. think that he

  328. looks at all

  329. our faults

  330. and he's not

  331. going to give.

  332. Well,

  333. for Solomon,

  334. his understanding

  335. of God,

  336. that God

  337. is kind,

  338. shaped

  339. his request.

  340. He could

  341. ask

  342. of a kind

  343. and generous

  344. God.

  345. But there's

  346. something else

  347. we learn

  348. as he prays.

  349. He comes

  350. in great

  351. humility.

  352. He recognises

  353. his own

  354. weakness

  355. and inability.

  356. Verse 7.

  357. Now,

  358. Lord my God,

  359. you have

  360. made your

  361. servant king

  362. in place

  363. of my father

  364. David,

  365. but I am

  366. only a little

  367. child and I

  368. do not know

  369. how to carry

  370. out my

  371. duties.

  372. Yes,

  373. he's a king.

  374. Yes,

  375. he's a mature

  376. adult.

  377. But for the

  378. task of

  379. ruling God's

  380. kingdom,

  381. well,

  382. he's just

  383. a little

  384. kid.

  385. He's aware

  386. of his

  387. inadequacy

  388. and he

  389. knows that

  390. he should

  391. come to

  392. God.

  393. I can't

  394. do it

  395. is basically

  396. his cry.

  397. Too often

  398. we can be

  399. so proud,

  400. can't we?

  401. We don't

  402. ask God

  403. for help,

  404. we don't

  405. commune

  406. with God

  407. because,

  408. well,

  409. I can

  410. do it

  411. and I've

  412. got all

  413. the resources

  414. within myself

  415. to get

  416. things done.

  417. But for

  418. Solomon,

  419. he sees

  420. that he

  421. cannot live

  422. or lead

  423. in God's

  424. kingdom,

  425. he desperately

  426. needs God.

  427. I'm only

  428. a little

  429. child and

  430. I do

  431. not know

  432. how to

  433. carry out

  434. my duties.

  435. in the

  436. eyes of

  437. the world,

  438. to admit

  439. that you're

  440. weak and

  441. that you

  442. need help

  443. is a

  444. sign of

  445. great

  446. weakness.

  447. You're

  448. not

  449. employable,

  450. you're

  451. not needed

  452. or wanted.

  453. Well,

  454. weakness

  455. is the

  456. way in

  457. which we

  458. do

  459. receive.

  460. I have

  461. a friend

  462. who sometimes

  463. says to

  464. me,

  465. as the

  466. good book

  467. says,

  468. God helps

  469. those who

  470. help

  471. themselves.

  472. Well,

  473. the good

  474. book doesn't

  475. say that.

  476. Look it

  477. up in

  478. your Bible.

  479. But what

  480. the Bible

  481. does tell

  482. us is

  483. that God

  484. longs to

  485. help those

  486. who admit

  487. they can't

  488. help

  489. themselves.

  490. He longs

  491. for us to

  492. come with

  493. open hands,

  494. admit our

  495. weakness,

  496. and receive

  497. generously

  498. from our

  499. good God.

  500. As one

  501. author put

  502. it,

  503. when human

  504. weakness

  505. meets divine

  506. grace,

  507. God is

  508. pleased.

  509. So,

  510. look at

  511. how Solomon

  512. makes his

  513. request.

  514. He recognised

  515. God's

  516. kindness,

  517. he knows

  518. his weakness,

  519. and now

  520. he makes

  521. his request,

  522. verse 9.

  523. So,

  524. give,

  525. give your

  526. servant a

  527. discerning

  528. heart to

  529. govern your

  530. people and

  531. it's

  532. distinguished

  533. between right

  534. and wrong.

  535. For who is

  536. able to

  537. govern this

  538. great people

  539. of yours?

  540. Verse 12,

  541. God answers,

  542. I will do

  543. what you

  544. have asked.

  545. I will

  546. give you a

  547. wise and

  548. discerning

  549. heart,

  550. so that

  551. there will

  552. never have

  553. been anyone

  554. like you,

  555. nor will

  556. there ever

  557. be.

  558. It's an

  559. extraordinary

  560. request,

  561. isn't it?

  562. Remember what

  563. God's offer

  564. was.

  565. Solomon,

  566. ask for

  567. whatever you

  568. want me to

  569. give you.

  570. Wow.

  571. well,

  572. I'd like a

  573. new car.

  574. Actually,

  575. a self-drive

  576. Tesla.

  577. Have you

  578. seen them?

  579. That new

  580. phone,

  581. iPhone X,

  582. that six-inch

  583. screen,

  584. that new

  585. version.

  586. And I

  587. could do

  588. with a

  589. better salary

  590. as well.

  591. Six figures,

  592. just six

  593. figures would

  594. be fine.

  595. And since

  596. I'm here

  597. and you're

  598. offering,

  599. well,

  600. I'd love

  601. good health.

  602. No more

  603. annoying work

  604. colleagues.

  605. And by the

  606. way,

  607. if you could

  608. make it

  609. possible,

  610. get rid

  611. of all

  612. my

  613. neighbour's

  614. cats as

  615. well.

  616. No,

  617. it's not

  618. what he

  619. says,

  620. is it?

  621. Look at

  622. verse 9.

  623. Give

  624. your servant

  625. a discerning

  626. heart to

  627. govern your

  628. people and

  629. distinguish

  630. between right

  631. and wrong,

  632. give me

  633. wisdom so

  634. I can

  635. discern what

  636. is right

  637. and what

  638. is wrong

  639. and what

  640. is best.

  641. Give me

  642. wisdom so

  643. that I

  644. can live

  645. life God's

  646. way,

  647. in God's

  648. kingdom,

  649. enabling me

  650. to choose

  651. what is

  652. right and

  653. what will

  654. bring life

  655. and what

  656. will bring

  657. blessing.

  658. Solomon

  659. doesn't ask

  660. for what

  661. he wants.

  662. he asks

  663. for what

  664. pleases

  665. God.

  666. Verse 10.

  667. The Lord

  668. was pleased

  669. that Solomon

  670. had asked

  671. for this.

  672. So God

  673. said to

  674. him,

  675. since you

  676. have asked

  677. for this

  678. and not

  679. for long

  680. life or

  681. wealth for

  682. yourself,

  683. nor have

  684. asked for

  685. the death

  686. of your

  687. enemies,

  688. but for

  689. discernment

  690. and administering

  691. justice,

  692. I will

  693. do what

  694. you have

  695. asked.

  696. You see,

  697. we mustn't

  698. think of

  699. God as

  700. some magic

  701. genie that

  702. we have to

  703. kind of

  704. caress and

  705. do good

  706. things for

  707. and,

  708. well,

  709. he will

  710. just give

  711. then at

  712. our demand.

  713. Prayer

  714. actually isn't

  715. about me

  716. and my

  717. wants.

  718. Prayer

  719. is about

  720. what pleases

  721. God and

  722. what pleases

  723. God is

  724. always what

  725. is best

  726. and right

  727. for us.

  728. Now,

  729. we mightn't

  730. be a

  731. Solomon,

  732. but aren't

  733. we all

  734. called to

  735. live well

  736. in God's

  737. kingdom?

  738. Aren't we

  739. called to

  740. make good

  741. and right

  742. choices for

  743. what will be

  744. best for

  745. our life?

  746. Well,

  747. this same

  748. generous offer

  749. that we

  750. see in

  751. chapter 3

  752. verse 5,

  753. ask for

  754. whatever you

  755. want me to

  756. give you,

  757. in a sense

  758. is given

  759. to us.

  760. Look what it

  761. says in

  762. James,

  763. if any of

  764. you lacks

  765. wisdom,

  766. you should

  767. ask God

  768. who gives

  769. generously

  770. to all

  771. without

  772. finding

  773. faults

  774. and it

  775. will be

  776. given to

  777. you.

  778. God is

  779. not on

  780. the

  781. lookout

  782. for

  783. our

  784. faults

  785. so he

  786. can

  787. refuse

  788. our

  789. requests.

  790. He gives

  791. generously,

  792. he gives

  793. to all

  794. without

  795. finding

  796. fault.

  797. He

  798. faithfully

  799. gives to

  800. those who

  801. are weak

  802. and know

  803. they need

  804. help.

  805. we would

  806. be wise,

  807. wouldn't

  808. we,

  809. to pray

  810. the kind

  811. of prayer

  812. Solomon

  813. prays,

  814. asking for

  815. our good

  816. and generous

  817. God,

  818. for that

  819. wisdom

  820. to live

  821. life as

  822. God has

  823. called us

  824. to.

  825. So Solomon

  826. receives

  827. this

  828. wonderful

  829. gift of

  830. wisdom

  831. and as

  832. we'll

  833. discover

  834. on

  835. receiving

  836. wisdom

  837. it

  838. brings

  839. great

  840. blessing.

  841. It

  842. brings

  843. great

  844. blessing.

  845. We

  846. have,

  847. it wasn't

  848. read,

  849. but we

  850. have this

  851. extraordinary

  852. account of

  853. two

  854. prostitutes.

  855. You may

  856. have come

  857. across this

  858. account before.

  859. Let's

  860. read this

  861. whole account

  862. starting in

  863. verse 16

  864. as we

  865. see the

  866. blessings

  867. that flow

  868. from

  869. wisdom.

  870. Verse 16,

  871. now two

  872. prostitutes

  873. came to

  874. the king

  875. and stood

  876. before them.

  877. One of

  878. them said,

  879. pardon me

  880. my lord,

  881. this woman

  882. and I

  883. live in

  884. the same

  885. house.

  886. I had

  887. a baby

  888. while she

  889. was there

  890. with me.

  891. The third

  892. day after

  893. the child

  894. was born,

  895. this woman

  896. also had

  897. a baby.

  898. We were

  899. alone.

  900. There was

  901. no one

  902. in the

  903. house but

  904. the two

  905. of us,

  906. no other

  907. witnesses.

  908. Okay,

  909. go on,

  910. go on.

  911. Well,

  912. during the

  913. nights,

  914. this woman's

  915. son died

  916. because she

  917. lay on

  918. him.

  919. So she

  920. got up in

  921. the middle

  922. of the

  923. night and

  924. took my

  925. son from

  926. my side

  927. while I,

  928. your servant,

  929. was asleep.

  930. She put

  931. him by

  932. her breast

  933. and put

  934. her dead

  935. son by

  936. my breast.

  937. The next

  938. morning I

  939. got up to

  940. nurse my

  941. son and

  942. he was

  943. dead.

  944. But when I

  945. looked at

  946. him closely

  947. in the

  948. morning light,

  949. I saw that

  950. he wasn't

  951. the son

  952. that I

  953. had born.

  954. The other

  955. woman said,

  956. no,

  957. the living

  958. one is my

  959. son,

  960. the dead

  961. one is

  962. yours.

  963. But the

  964. first one

  965. insisted,

  966. no,

  967. the dead

  968. one is

  969. yours,

  970. the living

  971. one is

  972. mine.

  973. And so

  974. they argued

  975. before the

  976. king.

  977. Now we

  978. can only

  979. imagine the

  980. heartache

  981. and helplessness

  982. of this

  983. poor mother.

  984. She knows

  985. her son.

  986. She's felt

  987. his heartbeat.

  988. She knows

  989. his unique

  990. little features.

  991. this is

  992. her baby

  993. and she

  994. longs for

  995. justice.

  996. But rather

  997. than things

  998. get better,

  999. they seem

  1000. to get

  1001. worse.

  1002. Verse 23,

  1003. the king

  1004. said,

  1005. this one

  1006. says,

  1007. my son is

  1008. alive and

  1009. your son is

  1010. dead.

  1011. While that

  1012. one there

  1013. says,

  1014. no,

  1015. your son

  1016. is dead

  1017. and mine

  1018. is alive.

  1019. I mean,

  1020. which one

  1021. is it?

  1022. How am I

  1023. supposed to

  1024. know?

  1025. then the

  1026. king said,

  1027. bring me

  1028. a sword.

  1029. What on

  1030. earth does

  1031. he need a

  1032. sword for?

  1033. So they

  1034. brought a

  1035. sword for

  1036. the king.

  1037. Then he

  1038. gave an

  1039. order,

  1040. cut the

  1041. living child

  1042. in two

  1043. and give

  1044. half to

  1045. one

  1046. and half

  1047. to the

  1048. other.

  1049. what?

  1050. A

  1051. terrible

  1052. injustice

  1053. is about

  1054. to take

  1055. place.

  1056. She came

  1057. looking for

  1058. justice and

  1059. now she

  1060. seems powerless.

  1061. There's

  1062. nothing she

  1063. can do

  1064. about it.

  1065. Verse 26,

  1066. the woman

  1067. whose son

  1068. was alive

  1069. was deeply

  1070. moved out

  1071. of love

  1072. for her

  1073. son and

  1074. said to

  1075. the king,

  1076. please,

  1077. my lord,

  1078. give her

  1079. the living

  1080. baby.

  1081. Don't

  1082. kill him.

  1083. But the

  1084. other said,

  1085. neither I

  1086. nor you

  1087. shall have

  1088. him.

  1089. Cut him

  1090. in two.

  1091. Then the

  1092. king gave

  1093. this ruling.

  1094. Give the

  1095. living baby

  1096. to the

  1097. first woman.

  1098. Do not

  1099. kill him.

  1100. She is

  1101. his mother.

  1102. Now Solomon's

  1103. threat to

  1104. cut the

  1105. baby in

  1106. two may

  1107. cause us

  1108. some kind

  1109. of distress,

  1110. understandably.

  1111. but that's

  1112. not Solomon's

  1113. intention.

  1114. His threat

  1115. merely uncovers

  1116. the truth

  1117. so that

  1118. justice can

  1119. be done.

  1120. The true

  1121. mother would

  1122. do anything

  1123. to save

  1124. her son,

  1125. even if that

  1126. meant giving

  1127. it to someone

  1128. else.

  1129. The false

  1130. mother would

  1131. just let the

  1132. child die.

  1133. Their

  1134. responses

  1135. proved who

  1136. was the

  1137. real

  1138. mother.

  1139. Solomon's

  1140. wisdom

  1141. brought

  1142. blessing

  1143. to this

  1144. broken

  1145. mother.

  1146. She

  1147. received the

  1148. justice she

  1149. longed for,

  1150. life for her

  1151. baby son and

  1152. life with

  1153. her son.

  1154. Wisdom

  1155. speaks

  1156. into the

  1157. chaos and

  1158. disruption and

  1159. brokenness of

  1160. her life

  1161. and her

  1162. future

  1163. has been

  1164. transformed.

  1165. verse 28,

  1166. when all

  1167. Israel heard

  1168. the verdict

  1169. the king

  1170. had given,

  1171. they held

  1172. the king

  1173. in awe

  1174. because they

  1175. saw he

  1176. had wisdom

  1177. from God

  1178. to administer

  1179. justice.

  1180. isn't this

  1181. the kind

  1182. of king

  1183. we too

  1184. long for?

  1185. A king

  1186. that we

  1187. could go

  1188. to who

  1189. is so

  1190. wise,

  1191. who welcomes

  1192. people, it

  1193. appears,

  1194. whoever they

  1195. are, no

  1196. matter what

  1197. their background,

  1198. whatever is

  1199. going on in

  1200. their life,

  1201. and one who

  1202. will always do

  1203. what is right

  1204. and just

  1205. and fair?

  1206. A king

  1207. with the

  1208. wisdom of

  1209. God

  1210. who will

  1211. put all

  1212. wrongs to

  1213. right?

  1214. Well, in

  1215. Christ,

  1216. we have

  1217. the ultimate

  1218. and wise

  1219. king, don't

  1220. we?

  1221. I mean, look

  1222. at this woman

  1223. here.

  1224. We don't

  1225. even know

  1226. her name.

  1227. She's just

  1228. referred to

  1229. as that

  1230. prostitute.

  1231. An

  1232. occupation

  1233. like hers

  1234. could have

  1235. had her

  1236. sentenced to

  1237. death for

  1238. coming to

  1239. the king.

  1240. Ignored,

  1241. abused,

  1242. and rejected.

  1243. But in

  1244. coming to

  1245. the king,

  1246. she finds

  1247. justice

  1248. and life

  1249. and peace.

  1250. How much

  1251. more

  1252. will we

  1253. receive the

  1254. blessings of

  1255. the kingdom

  1256. as we

  1257. come to

  1258. Christ?

  1259. You see,

  1260. as we

  1261. come to

  1262. Christ in

  1263. all our

  1264. brokenness and

  1265. in all our

  1266. mess,

  1267. as we come

  1268. seeking

  1269. justice,

  1270. well, we

  1271. don't need to

  1272. argue our

  1273. case,

  1274. because the

  1275. good news is

  1276. when we come

  1277. to Christ,

  1278. we actually

  1279. find that

  1280. justice has

  1281. already been

  1282. done.

  1283. God in

  1284. his wisdom,

  1285. before the

  1286. foundation of

  1287. the world,

  1288. before we

  1289. existed,

  1290. before we

  1291. came to

  1292. be,

  1293. had sent

  1294. his son

  1295. the plan

  1296. to come

  1297. into the

  1298. world for

  1299. us.

  1300. A king

  1301. who came

  1302. who did

  1303. not threaten

  1304. with the

  1305. sword,

  1306. but a

  1307. king who

  1308. would come

  1309. and take

  1310. the sword

  1311. for us.

  1312. He would

  1313. give his

  1314. life on

  1315. the cross,

  1316. taking the

  1317. blame for

  1318. all the

  1319. wrong that

  1320. we have

  1321. done,

  1322. so that

  1323. we could

  1324. be forgiven

  1325. and receive

  1326. life and

  1327. peace,

  1328. not just

  1329. for now,

  1330. not just

  1331. temporarily,

  1332. but for

  1333. eternity,

  1334. the blessings

  1335. of the

  1336. kingdom,

  1337. all ours,

  1338. given from

  1339. the king.

  1340. Turn with

  1341. me,

  1342. please,

  1343. to

  1344. Colossians

    Colossians 2 chapter mention

  1345. chapter 2.

  1346. First

  1347. there can

  1348. give me

  1349. the page

  1350. number,

  1351. if you

  1352. have it,

  1353. Colossians

    Colossians 2 chapter mention

  1354. chapter 2.

  1355. 1183.

  1356. 1183

  1357. Colossians

    Colossians 2 chapter mention

  1358. chapter 2.

  1359. You see,

  1360. in Christ

  1361. we have

  1362. the ultimate

  1363. wise

  1364. king.

  1365. For in

  1366. Christ,

  1367. wisdom

  1368. itself is

  1369. personified.

  1370. Look what

  1371. Colossians

    Colossians 2:3

  1372. chapter 2

  1373. verse 3

  1374. tells us.

  1375. in whom,

  1376. that is,

  1377. in Christ

  1378. are hidden,

  1379. what do we

  1380. find in

  1381. Christ?

  1382. All the

  1383. treasures

  1384. of wisdom

  1385. and knowledge.

  1386. All of

  1387. wisdom,

  1388. everything,

  1389. in

  1390. Christ.

  1391. verse 8.

  1392. See to it

  1393. that no one

  1394. takes you

  1395. captive through

  1396. hollow and

  1397. deceptive

  1398. philosophy,

  1399. which depends

  1400. on human

  1401. tradition and

  1402. the elemental

  1403. spiritual forces

  1404. or the

  1405. principles of

  1406. this world,

  1407. rather than

  1408. on Christ.

  1409. Be careful

  1410. that you

  1411. don't get

  1412. led astray

  1413. by worldly

  1414. wisdom

  1415. that says

  1416. you can do

  1417. it and

  1418. you have the

  1419. power and

  1420. you have the

  1421. strength to

  1422. make the

  1423. right decisions

  1424. for life and

  1425. for all that

  1426. you need.

  1427. peace.

  1428. No,

  1429. turn to

  1430. Christ,

  1431. for Christ

  1432. is our

  1433. wisdom.

  1434. Verse 9.

  1435. For in

  1436. Christ

  1437. all the

  1438. fullness

  1439. of the

  1440. deity

  1441. lives in

  1442. bodily

  1443. form.

  1444. All of

  1445. God,

  1446. his

  1447. greatness,

  1448. his

  1449. power,

  1450. his

  1451. beauty

  1452. is all

  1453. in

  1454. Christ.

  1455. Verse 10.

  1456. And in

  1457. Christ

  1458. you have

  1459. been brought

  1460. to

  1461. fullness.

  1462. Everything

  1463. that we

  1464. would possibly

  1465. need to

  1466. receive life

  1467. and to

  1468. live life

  1469. God's

  1470. way is

  1471. all in

  1472. Christ and

  1473. we have

  1474. it all in

  1475. Christ to

  1476. the point of

  1477. fullness to

  1478. overflowing.

  1479. A wise

  1480. king,

  1481. more than

  1482. we could

  1483. ever expect

  1484. or imagine.

  1485. If you

  1486. could ask

  1487. for one

  1488. thing and

  1489. you knew

  1490. you would

  1491. receive it,

  1492. what would

  1493. you ask

  1494. for?

  1495. Or let me

  1496. change that

  1497. slightly.

  1498. Who would

  1499. you ask

  1500. for?

  1501. More of

  1502. Christ.

  1503. Lord,

  1504. more of

  1505. Christ.

  1506. The

  1507. treasures of

  1508. all the

  1509. wisdom,

  1510. the fullness

  1511. of God,

  1512. everything that

  1513. we could

  1514. possibly ever

  1515. need for

  1516. life today

  1517. and for

  1518. life to

  1519. come.

  1520. The

  1521. wisdom

  1522. that is

  1523. Christ's.

  1524. Choose

  1525. wisely

  1526. and live

  1527. life well.

  1528. Let's

  1529. pray.

  1530. Let's

  1531. pray.

  1532. Father, we

  1533. have seen

  1534. that you

  1535. are good

  1536. and kind

  1537. and generous.

  1538. you give

  1539. to all

  1540. without

  1541. finding

  1542. fault

  1543. and so

  1544. we humbly

  1545. come to

  1546. you

  1547. with our

  1548. hands

  1549. open.

  1550. We don't

  1551. bring

  1552. anything.

  1553. Rather,

  1554. we long

  1555. to receive

  1556. all that

  1557. you would

  1558. give to

  1559. us

  1560. and we

  1561. pray that

  1562. we might

  1563. know more

  1564. of Christ

  1565. in our

  1566. life.

  1567. That we

  1568. would

  1569. discover

  1570. the

  1571. depths

  1572. and the

  1573. beauty

  1574. of the

  1575. riches

  1576. that are

  1577. in Christ.

  1578. All

  1579. that we

  1580. need,

  1581. available

  1582. and offer

  1583. to us

  1584. as we

  1585. look to

  1586. you.

  1587. Help

  1588. us

  1589. that we

  1590. would not

  1591. only hear

  1592. your

  1593. word,

  1594. but listen

  1595. to it

  1596. and put

  1597. it into

  1598. practice.

  1599. Asking

  1600. for your

  1601. Holy Spirit's

  1602. help

  1603. to enable

  1604. us to

  1605. do so.

  1606. Thank you

  1607. for life

  1608. today.

  1609. Thank you

  1610. for life

  1611. in your

  1612. kingdom

  1613. and thank

  1614. you for

  1615. the blessings

  1616. that are

  1617. to come.

  1618. Thank you.

  1619. In Jesus'

  1620. name we

  1621. all pray.

  1622. Amen.

  1623. a

  1624. pretty

  1625. good

  1626. man.

  1627. Amen.

  1628. Amen.

  1629. Amen.

  1630. Amen.

  1631. Amen.

  1632. Amen.

  1633. Amen.

  1634. Amen.

  1635. Amen.

  1636. Amen.

  1637. Amen.

  1638. Amen.

  1639. Amen.
