  1. 10 head of stall-fed cattle, 20 of pasture-fed cattle,

  2. 100 sheep and goats, as well as deer, gazelles, roebucks, and choice fowl.

  3. For he ruled over all the kingdoms west of the river Euphrates,

  4. from Tiptia and Gaza, and had peace on all sides.

  5. During Solomon's lifetime, Judah and Israel, from Dan to Beersheba,

  6. lived in safety, and everyone under their own vine and under their own fig tree.

  7. Solomon had 4,000 stalls for chariot horses and 12,000 horses.

  8. The district governors each, in his months, supplied provisions for King Solomon,

  9. and all who came to the king's table, they saw to it that nothing was lacking.

  10. They also brought to the proper place their quotas of barley and straw

  11. for the chariot horses and the other horses.

  12. God gave Solomon wisdom and very great insight,

  13. and a breadth of understanding as measureless as the sand on the seashore.

  14. Solomon's wisdom was greater than the wisdom of all the people of the East,

  15. and greater than all the wisdom of Egypt.

  16. He was wiser than anyone else, including Ethan the Ezraite,

  17. wiser than Heman, Calgal, and Darda, the sons of Mahal.

  18. And his fame spread to all the surrounding nations.

  19. He spoke 3,000 proverbs, and his song numbered 1,005.

  20. He spoke about plant life, from the cedars of Lebanon

  21. to the hyssop that grows out of the walls.

  22. He also spoke about animals and birds and reptiles and fish.

  23. From all nations, people came to listen to Solomon's wisdom,

  24. sent by all the kings of the world who had heard of his wisdom.

  25. Well, before we start, what I'd like us to do, just by way of ease,

  26. you can keep your finger or something.

  27. Maybe you can use one of the little cards there

  28. and slip it into 1 Kings 4,

  29. and then turn all the way back to Genesis chapter 12.

    Genesis 12 chapter mention

  30. Okay, so keep your finger there in 1 Kings 4,

  31. and jump all the way back to Genesis chapter 12.

    Genesis 12 chapter mention

  32. Well, let's pray.

  33. Lord, for the food and drink that we have just shared with each other,

  34. we say thank you.

  35. And because you are a generous God,

  36. we ask that you would continue to pour out your blessing upon us now.

  37. Give to us generously your Holy Spirit.

  38. Bring life to these words,

  39. that it may cause us to lift our heads,

  40. to look to Jesus,

  41. to glory in our great and wonderful King.

  42. Help us, we ask in Jesus' name.

  43. Amen.

  44. Amen.

  45. Well, we had been walking for a few hours,

  46. and all of a sudden, the talking stopped.

  47. We turned around to a forest,

  48. a blaze of reds and oranges and yellow and golds

  49. as the autumn leaves began to turn.

  50. Below the forest was this deep blue lake,

  51. and behind us up above were the towering snow-capped peaks

  52. of the Andes Mountains.

  53. The silence,

  54. the silence,

  55. the crisp,

  56. the crisp, cool air.

  57. That scene,

  58. that beauty

  59. remains etched

  60. in my mind.

  61. But we all knew that it was an escape from reality.

  62. Only the week before,

  63. we were working on the edge of a shanty town.

  64. people scraping together in existence,

  65. open sores,

  66. plastic and tin shacks.

  67. the poverty and the pollution was there to see.

  68. But just for those few minutes,

  69. as we gazed at the splendour,

  70. we escaped the suffering and the brokenness.

  71. We all long for those moments to last forever.

  72. We long for a good and beautiful world

  73. where there is no more suffering or hurts or pain.

  74. Well, 1 Kings chapter 4

    1 Kings 4 chapter mention

  75. paints for us the world

  76. that we all long for.

  77. It's a picture we can easily miss.

  78. We've got this great big long list of names

  79. and we've got this strange supply of food

  80. for catering purposes.

  81. And we look at these lists

  82. and we think,

  83. no, I won't bother reading that.

  84. And we jump ahead

  85. looking for something more exciting.

  86. But if you like,

  87. stamped across 1 Kings chapter 4

    1 Kings 4 chapter mention

  88. is God's faithful promise

  89. to establish a new and beautiful world.

  90. If you want a summary for chapter 4,

  91. it's God's faithful promise

  92. to establish a beautiful new world.

  93. And in chapter 4,

  94. God paints for us a picture

  95. of the world we all long for.

  96. But before we go into the details of chapter 4,

  97. we need to look back

  98. at God's promise

  99. in Genesis chapter 12.

    Genesis 12 chapter mention

  100. First, God promises

  101. the world we all long for.

  102. The story of the Bible,

  103. which I'm sure is familiar with us all,

  104. begins with a beautiful world,

  105. doesn't it?

  106. The Garden of Eden.

  107. Eden means paradise,

  108. and it was paradise.

  109. God's people,

  110. Adam and Eve,

  111. living under God's loving rule.

  112. And there they were,

  113. enjoying God's abundant provision

  114. of all they could ever want or imagine,

  115. safe and secure.

  116. It's a place of harmony

  117. and beauty.

  118. But sadly and tragically,

  119. God's people turned and rebelled against God.

  120. The world and its people were cursed.

  121. And instead of the harmony,

  122. we get sin and suffering.

  123. And in place of the beauty,

  124. there's death and destruction.

  125. Paradise was lost.

  126. But into this chaos

  127. and into this disorder,

  128. God spoke his promise

  129. to Abraham.

  130. The promises that we read

  131. in chapter 12,

  132. verses 1 to 3.

  133. God's promises to Abraham

  134. were clear.

  135. I want to point out

  136. four promises that God makes.

  137. Promise number 1,

  138. in verse 1.

  139. The Lord said to Abraham,

  140. go from your country,

  141. your people,

  142. and your father's household

  143. to the land I will show you,

  144. and I will make you

  145. into a great nation.

  146. So promise number 1,

  147. you are going to be

  148. a great nation,

  149. a people group.

  150. Later, God would promise Abraham

  151. that this nation

  152. would be as numerous

  153. as the grain of sands

  154. on the beach.

  155. And then promise number 2.

  156. Look again at verse 1.

  157. God had said,

  158. go to the land

  159. I will show you.

  160. And verse 7,

  161. the Lord appeared to Abraham

  162. and said to your offspring,

  163. I give this land.

  164. So God promises the nation

  165. that they would have a land,

  166. a place in which to live.

  167. So a nation,

  168. a land,

  169. promise number 3.

  170. Let's pick that up again

  171. in verse 2.

  172. He says,

  173. I will make you

  174. into a great nation

  175. and I will bless you

  176. and I will make your name great

  177. and you will be a blessing.

  178. This promised nation

  179. who live in their own land

  180. would be blessed,

  181. a land of peace

  182. and prosperity,

  183. everything they need

  184. for life

  185. and happiness.

  186. So a nation,

  187. a land,

  188. a blessing.

  189. And then promise number 4,

  190. verse 3.

  191. I will bless those

  192. who bless you

  193. and whoever curses you

  194. I will curse

  195. and all peoples on earth

  196. will be blessed

  197. through you.

  198. this blessed people

  199. would in turn

  200. become a blessing

  201. to all the other nations.

  202. What does it remind you of?

  203. Well, it sounds like

  204. the Garden of Eden,

  205. doesn't it?

  206. A people

  207. living in their own land,

  208. enjoying God's blessing

  209. and being a blessing.

  210. And isn't that

  211. what we all long for?

  212. Where people are living

  213. in joy

  214. and happiness,

  215. enjoying the beauty

  216. and living under

  217. God's loving rule.

  218. Everything wonderfully good.

  219. Into the chaos

  220. and the disorder,

  221. God speaks

  222. an incredible promise.

  223. Well, how would

  224. all this happen?

  225. How would

  226. God's promise

  227. become

  228. a reality?

  229. Well, second,

  230. God's promise world

  231. is unveiled

  232. for us.

  233. Just jump ahead

  234. a couple of chapters

  235. to Genesis chapter 17.

    Genesis 17 chapter mention

  236. God speaks

  237. to Abraham again.

  238. But this time,

  239. if we look carefully,

  240. he adds

  241. another promise.

  242. So,

  243. Genesis 17,

    Genesis 17:5

  244. verse 5.

  245. No longer

  246. will you be called

  247. Abram,

  248. but your name

  249. will be

  250. Abraham,

  251. for I have made you

  252. a father

  253. of many nations.

  254. I will make you

  255. very fruitful.

  256. I will make

  257. nations of you.

  258. And here's

  259. the other promise.

  260. And kings

  261. will come

  262. from you.

  263. God promises

  264. that kings

  265. would come

  266. who would bring

  267. rule

  268. and who would bring

  269. blessing

  270. to the people.

  271. It was through

  272. the king

  273. that the blessings

  274. that God had promised

  275. would become

  276. a reality.

  277. In particular,

  278. a king would come

  279. from the line

  280. from the line of David.

  281. A king whose kingdom

  282. would last forever

  283. and ever.

  284. And we can read it here.

  285. God had promised

  286. David this.

  287. I will raise up

  288. your offspring

  289. to succeed you,

  290. your own flesh

  291. and blood.

  292. And I will establish

  293. his kingdom

  294. and your throne

  295. will be established

  296. forever.

  297. forever.

  298. So,

  299. God is promising

  300. that a king

  301. would come

  302. and it is

  303. through this king

  304. who would make

  305. the blessings

  306. become a reality.

  307. Now,

  308. let's jump

  309. to 1 Kings

    1 Kings 4 chapter mention

  310. chapter 4

  311. and we'll settle

  312. there

  313. in chapter 4.

  314. because in 1 Kings

    1 Kings 4 chapter mention

  315. chapter 4

  316. we see these promises

  317. beginning to take shape

  318. through God's king.

  319. Look at chapter 4

  320. verse 1.

  321. So,

  322. King Solomon ruled

  323. over all Israel

  324. and these were his

  325. chief officials

  326. and we read down

  327. through those names

  328. and we see

  329. verse 3

  330. there were secretaries

  331. there were recorders

  332. in verse 4

  333. there's commander-in-chiefs

  334. and priests

  335. in verse 5

  336. we've got governors

  337. and advisors

  338. and administrators

  339. everything you need

  340. to establish

  341. order

  342. and maintain

  343. rule

  344. in God's kingdom.

  345. And then in verse 7

  346. Solomon had 12

  347. district governors

  348. over all Israel

  349. so

  350. all of this

  351. great big land

  352. this nation

  353. has been divided

  354. into 12 areas

  355. who supplied

  356. provisions for the king

  357. and the royal household.

  358. Each one

  359. so each division

  360. had to provide

  361. supplies

  362. for one month

  363. in the year.

  364. So if they all

  365. did their part

  366. there would be food

  367. for the 12 months

  368. of the year.

  369. And we get a big

  370. long list

  371. of all the people

  372. who were involved.

  373. But look at the supplies

  374. look at all the food

  375. that they supply.

  376. Verse 22

  377. Solomon's daily provisions

  378. were 30 cores

  379. that's 5 tons

  380. of finest flour.

  381. 60 tons

  382. or 60 cores

  383. that's 10 tons

  384. of meal.

  385. 10 head

  386. of stall

  387. fed cattle.

  388. 20 of pasture

  389. fed cattle.

  390. And 100

  391. sheep

  392. and goats

  393. as well as

  394. deer

  395. and gazelles

  396. and roebuck

  397. and the

  398. choicest

  399. of fowls.

  400. One would only hope

  401. that he also got

  402. part of his

  403. five a day

  404. with all that meat.

  405. Someone worked out

  406. that this was

  407. enough food

  408. to supply

  409. 5,000

  410. kingdom officials.

  411. This is not

  412. just one month's

  413. food.

  414. This is not

  415. a year's food.

  416. This is

  417. every single day.

  418. It's enormous.

  419. The provision

  420. and the plenty.

  421. There's no chaos

  422. going on here.

  423. There's no disorder

  424. in the ranks.

  425. Nobody going on

  426. strike saying

  427. I haven't got

  428. enough.

  429. Even the animals

  430. are well fed.

  431. Look at verse 26.

  432. Solomon had

  433. 4,000

  434. some say

  435. 40,000

  436. stalls

  437. for chariot

  438. horses

  439. and 12,000

  440. horses.

  441. Verse 28.

  442. They also brought

  443. to the proper

  444. place their

  445. quotas of barley

  446. and straw

  447. for the chariot

  448. horses

  449. and all the

  450. other horses.

  451. This is

  452. in a

  453. magnificent

  454. kingdom.

  455. A kingdom

  456. so great

  457. and wonderful

  458. that it

  459. was the

  460. desire

  461. and envy

  462. of all

  463. the other

  464. nations.

  465. Look back

  466. at verse 21.

  467. And Solomon

  468. ruled over

  469. all the

  470. kingdoms

  471. from the

  472. river

  473. Euphrates

  474. so that's

  475. right up

  476. into the

  477. north

  478. to the

  479. land of

  480. the

  481. Philistines

  482. over on

  483. the west

  484. over by

  485. the Mediterranean

  486. and as far

  487. as the border

  488. of Egypt

  489. right down

  490. to the south.

  491. These

  492. countries

  493. brought

  494. tribute

  495. and were

  496. Solomon's

  497. subjects

  498. all his

  499. life.

  500. It's like

  501. the author

  502. is unveiling

  503. to us

  504. the splendour

  505. of the

  506. king's

  507. rule

  508. tempting

  509. us

  510. making us

  511. envy

  512. stand back

  513. and be

  514. amazed at

  515. the glory

  516. of this

  517. kingdom.

  518. Look at

  519. how great

  520. it is.

  521. Look at

  522. all the

  523. people

  524. who are

  525. ruling

  526. here.

  527. Look at

  528. all the

  529. food

  530. that's

  531. being

  532. supplied.

  533. Wouldn't

  534. you want

  535. to live

  536. in this

  537. kingdom

  538. too?

  539. Now the

  540. purpose of

  541. this king

  542. was to

  543. bring blessing

  544. to the

  545. people just

  546. as God

  547. had promised.

  548. And look

  549. how wonderful

  550. life is

  551. under this

  552. king.

  553. Verse 20.

  554. The people

  555. of Judah

  556. in Israel

  557. were as

  558. numerous as

  559. the sand

  560. on the

  561. seashore.

  562. Remember

  563. that promise

  564. that they

  565. would be

  566. a great

  567. nation

  568. just as

  569. God had

  570. promised?

  571. And here

  572. they are

  573. as a

  574. great

  575. number.

  576. Verse 20.

  577. They ate,

  578. they drank,

  579. and they

  580. were happy.

  581. It's like

  582. one continuous

  583. party,

  584. one glorious

  585. day after

  586. another.

  587. Yes,

  588. of course

  589. there's work

  590. to be done,

  591. but everybody's

  592. enjoying their

  593. work.

  594. It's a

  595. place of

  596. beauty and

  597. wonder.

  598. It's,

  599. well,

  600. it's just

  601. like

  602. paradise.

  603. And not

  604. only is

  605. there a

  606. joyful

  607. people,

  608. but they

  609. are abundantly

  610. secure.

  611. Verse 24.

  612. For the

  613. king ruled

  614. over all

  615. the kingdoms

  616. west of

  617. the river

  618. Euphrates,

  619. from

  620. Tipsha

  621. to Gaza,

  622. and had

  623. peace on

  624. all sides.

  625. during

  626. Solomon's

  627. lifetime,

  628. Judah

  629. and Israel,

  630. from Dan

  631. in the

  632. north to

  633. Beersheba

  634. in the

  635. south,

  636. lived in

  637. safety.

  638. No crime,

  639. no violence,

  640. no need

  641. to lock

  642. your car

  643. at night.

  644. Everyone

  645. lived in

  646. safety.

  647. And there's

  648. no homelessness

  649. here.

  650. Look at the

  651. end of

  652. verse 25.

  653. everyone

  654. under their

  655. own vine

  656. and under

  657. their own

  658. fig tree.

  659. Everyone

  660. with their

  661. own plot

  662. of land,

  663. abundantly

  664. rich and

  665. fertile land,

  666. supplying

  667. everything that

  668. they needed,

  669. each one

  670. living like

  671. a prince

  672. or a

  673. princess.

  674. It's like

  675. paradise.

  676. verse 27.

  677. The district

  678. governors,

  679. each in his

  680. month,

  681. supplied

  682. provisions

  683. for King

  684. Solomon.

  685. And all

  686. who came

  687. to the

  688. king's

  689. table,

  690. they saw

  691. to it

  692. that

  693. nothing,

  694. nothing

  695. was lacking.

  696. Nothing.

  697. Everyone

  698. from the

  699. king down

  700. enjoyed a

  701. life of

  702. wonderful

  703. blessing.

  704. It's like

  705. Eden.

  706. But I

  707. guess that's

  708. the point,

  709. isn't it?

  710. God had

  711. promised to

  712. create a

  713. people who

  714. would live

  715. in their

  716. own land

  717. and enjoyed

  718. the blessing

  719. of God

  720. living under

  721. his amazing

  722. rule.

  723. And here

  724. it is on

  725. display,

  726. unveiled

  727. before our

  728. eyes in

  729. all its

  730. beauty and

  731. wonder.

  732. Stand

  733. back and

  734. be amazed.

  735. God's

  736. faithful

  737. promise

  738. to establish

  739. a beautiful

  740. new

  741. world.

  742. third,

  743. God

  744. extends

  745. his

  746. promise

  747. of a

  748. new

  749. world

  750. to

  751. all

  752. nations.

  753. God

  754. has

  755. unveiled

  756. before us

  757. what this

  758. new

  759. world

  760. would be

  761. like,

  762. but this

  763. new

  764. world

  765. is on

  766. offer

  767. for all

  768. nations.

  769. Look at

  770. verse

  771. 29.

  772. God

  773. gave

  774. Solomon

  775. wisdom

  776. and

  777. very

  778. great

  779. insight

  780. and a

  781. breadth

  782. of

  783. understanding

  784. as

  785. measureless

  786. as the

  787. sand

  788. on the

  789. seashore.

  790. It

  791. wasn't

  792. just a

  793. great

  794. kingdom

  795. but a

  796. great

  797. king

  798. who

  799. ruled

  800. over.

  801. Solomon's

  802. wisdom

  803. was

  804. greater

  805. than the

  806. wisdom

  807. of all

  808. the

  809. people

  810. of the

  811. east

  812. and

  813. greater

  814. than

  815. all

  816. the

  817. wisdom

  818. of

  819. Egypt.

  820. Solomon

  821. was

  822. like a

  823. walking

  824. encyclopedia.

  825. David

  826. Attenborough

  827. and Albert

  828. Einstein

  829. and Stephen

  830. Hawking

  831. all rolled

  832. into one.

  833. Wouldn't

  834. it be great

  835. to have

  836. somebody

  837. around?

  838. You

  839. could

  840. ask

  841. him

  842. anything.

  843. What's

  844. the weather

  845. going to

  846. be like?

  847. What do

  848. you think

  849. is going

  850. to happen?

  851. Can you

  852. tell us

  853. what the

  854. skies are

  855. predicting?

  856. And

  857. what about

  858. that gnat?

  859. Why does

  860. it sting

  861. the way

  862. it does?

  863. Any

  864. special

  865. treatments

  866. for it?

  867. You

  868. could ask

  869. him

  870. anything

  871. and it

  872. seemed

  873. he knew

  874. the answers

  875. to it.

  876. But

  877. more than

  878. that,

  879. verse 32,

  880. he spoke

  881. 3,000

  882. proverbs

  883. and his

  884. song

  885. numbered

  886. 1,005,

  887. some of

  888. which are

  889. recorded for

  890. us in

  891. scripture

  892. itself.

  893. The book

  894. of Proverbs

  895. written by

  896. Solomon,

  897. most of

  898. them anyway.

  899. Song of

  900. songs

  901. written

  902. by

  903. Solomon.

  904. God

  905. gave

  906. Solomon

  907. such

  908. wonderful

  909. wisdom.

  910. But

  911. why?

  912. Why does

  913. Solomon

  914. have such

  915. vast

  916. knowledge

  917. knowledge

  918. and

  919. understanding

  920. so that

  921. he could

  922. be a

  923. blessing?

  924. Look at

  925. verse 34.

  926. From

  927. all

  928. nations,

  929. people

  930. came to

  931. listen to

  932. Solomon's

  933. wisdom

  934. sent by

  935. all the

  936. kings of

  937. the world

  938. who had

  939. heard of

  940. his

  941. wisdom.

  942. God

  943. gave

  944. Solomon

  945. wisdom

  946. so that

  947. he could

  948. rule

  949. well to

  950. bring

  951. peace and

  952. prosperity

  953. to the

  954. people.

  955. And now

  956. that same

  957. blessing is

  958. being extended

  959. to the

  960. nations.

  961. Verse 34,

  962. from all

  963. the nations,

  964. people came

  965. to listen to

  966. Solomon.

  967. They've

  968. heard about

  969. this great

  970. kingdom.

  971. They've

  972. heard about

  973. this great

  974. king.

  975. They've

  976. heard how

  977. blessed

  978. these people

  979. are.

  980. And they

  981. want to

  982. get in on

  983. the blessings

  984. too.

  985. And they're

  986. being sent

  987. in their

  988. droves from

  989. all the

  990. different

  991. nations to

  992. come and

  993. see.

  994. It was

  995. always God's

  996. plan.

  997. God never

  998. intended his

  999. blessings to

  1000. be restricted

  1001. to just

  1002. one people,

  1003. the people

  1004. of Israel.

  1005. God longed

  1006. that his

  1007. blessings would

  1008. flow to

  1009. all nations

  1010. and all

  1011. people groups

  1012. and all

  1013. languages.

  1014. You see,

  1015. God's promise

  1016. of a new

  1017. world is

  1018. open to

  1019. all,

  1020. to all

  1021. who will

  1022. come to

  1023. his

  1024. king.

  1025. So God

  1026. promises the

  1027. world we

  1028. long for.

  1029. The

  1030. promised

  1031. world is

  1032. unveiled for

  1033. us.

  1034. This

  1035. promised

  1036. new world

  1037. is extended

  1038. to all

  1039. nations.

  1040. And then

  1041. force God's

  1042. people can

  1043. enjoy this

  1044. new world

  1045. through

  1046. Jesus.

  1047. You see,

  1048. 1 Kings

    1 Kings 4 chapter mention

  1049. chapter 4 is

  1050. like an

  1051. unveiling,

  1052. isn't it?

  1053. It's like the

  1054. curtains are

  1055. being pulled

  1056. back and

  1057. we're given

  1058. a picture,

  1059. we're given

  1060. a glimpse

  1061. of the world

  1062. that we all

  1063. long for.

  1064. But as we

  1065. gaze in

  1066. wonder,

  1067. before our

  1068. very eyes,

  1069. the colours

  1070. on the

  1071. picture begin

  1072. to run.

  1073. And what

  1074. was bright

  1075. and beautiful

  1076. has become

  1077. distorted

  1078. and darkened.

  1079. It's

  1080. subtle,

  1081. but the

  1082. signs of

  1083. failure

  1084. are already

  1085. written

  1086. into chapter

  1087. 4.

  1088. Look at the

  1089. chief officials

  1090. in verse 2.

  1091. Look at all

  1092. the people

  1093. that Solomon

  1094. has put

  1095. together

  1096. to bring

  1097. about this

  1098. glorious

  1099. kingdom.

  1100. He's got

  1101. secretaries.

  1102. He's got

  1103. commanders

  1104. in chief.

  1105. He's even

  1106. got the

  1107. priests

  1108. in place.

  1109. But who's

  1110. missing?

  1111. Who's

  1112. missing?

  1113. There's no

  1114. prophet.

  1115. Where

  1116. is God's

  1117. prophet?

  1118. The one

  1119. who spoke

  1120. God's

  1121. word,

  1122. reminding

  1123. the people

  1124. of all

  1125. God's

  1126. promises

  1127. and how

  1128. they should

  1129. live and

  1130. receive the

  1131. promise.

  1132. It's

  1133. through the

  1134. prophets that

  1135. the promises

  1136. seem to

  1137. keep on

  1138. track.

  1139. Reminding

  1140. people and

  1141. showing people.

  1142. We saw

  1143. that right at

  1144. the very

  1145. beginning.

  1146. David was

  1147. already old

  1148. and he had

  1149. forgotten what

  1150. he was meant

  1151. to do.

  1152. And Nathan

  1153. the prophet

  1154. springs into

  1155. action and

  1156. brings God's

  1157. word and

  1158. rescues the

  1159. situation.

  1160. salvation.

  1161. It seems

  1162. Solomon has

  1163. forgotten God's

  1164. prophet.

  1165. God's word

  1166. doesn't seem to

  1167. be high

  1168. priority.

  1169. And instead

  1170. of a prophet,

  1171. look at the

  1172. end of verse

  1173. six.

  1174. We have

  1175. Adoniram,

  1176. son of

  1177. Abda.

  1178. What did

  1179. he do?

  1180. In charge

  1181. of...

  1182. Sorry, is

  1183. that meant to

  1184. be in

  1185. there?

  1186. Forced

  1187. labour?

  1188. That doesn't

  1189. sound like

  1190. loving rule

  1191. to me.

  1192. You can be

  1193. sure that

  1194. those people

  1195. under forced

  1196. labour were

  1197. not a joyful

  1198. people.

  1199. No peace

  1200. and prosperity

  1201. for them.

  1202. This

  1203. beautiful

  1204. world

  1205. pictured

  1206. before us

  1207. is beginning

  1208. to crack.

  1209. And then

  1210. in verse

  1211. 26,

  1212. we're told

  1213. that Solomon

  1214. had 4,000

  1215. stalls for

  1216. chariote

  1217. horses and

  1218. 12,000

  1219. horses.

  1220. It sounds

  1221. very grand,

  1222. doesn't it?

  1223. Well, why

  1224. don't you just

  1225. take a look

  1226. back to

  1227. Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 17 chapter mention

  1228. chapter 17.

  1229. Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 17 chapter mention

  1230. chapter 17.

  1231. Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 17 chapter mention

  1232. chapter 17.

  1233. Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 17 chapter mention

  1234. chapter 17.

  1235. Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 17 chapter mention

  1236. chapter 17.

  1237. Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 17 chapter mention

  1238. chapter 17.

  1239. Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 17 chapter mention

  1240. chapter 17.

  1241. io.

  1242. Deuteronomy

  1243. 16.

  1244. So here's

  1245. God's word

  1246. saying to

  1247. the people,

  1248. look, when

  1249. you have a

  1250. king, this is

  1251. what the king

  1252. must be like.

  1253. Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 17:16

1254. 17 verse 16 the king moreover must not acquire what great numbers of horses for himself

1255. or make the people return to egypt to get more of them solomon no no no horses solomon

1256. well why wouldn't he have horses well more than likely because it was a way of building a vast

1257. and great army and your dependence was on the army and not on god himself but here in one kings chapter

1258. four has solomon forgotten his word all because he didn't have the prophet in place

1259. the beautiful world pictured before us in one kings chapter four is tragically being torn apart

1260. it's it's beginning to crack the colors are running and it's distorted and darkened

1261. like a contagious disease it begins to spread and by the time we reach the end of kings

1262. well this model kingdom before us now is broken and destroyed god's people are not in their own land

1263. they're in exile they're not enjoying blessing they're in slavery all over again

1264. you see the world when it's left in our hands is always doomed to fail left to ourselves

1265. we can't create god's new world our sinful hearts are a constant reminder that we are a failed people

1266. we do not obey god's word as we should we trundle through life parking it to one side

1267. we do not deserve god's new world

1268. and yet and yet amazingly god in his grace has made it possible for us

1269. to enjoy his new world let me show you how we can enjoy and be part of all that god had promised

1270. go to galatians in the new testament galatians

  1271. galatians chapter 3

    Galatians 3 chapter mention

  1272. and verse 14

  1273. galatians 3 verse 14

    Galatians 3:14

  1274. just one verse

1275. see what it says god redeemed us in order that the blessing given to abraham

1276. might come to the gentiles through christ jesus

1277. so that by faith we might receive the promise of the spirit

1278. so let me just show you three things that guarantee our place in god's new world right from this verse

  1279. first

  1280. the faithful promise

1281. you see the only way we can ever enjoy god's new world to come

1282. is because god is faithful to his promise

1283. god is faithful to his promise

1284. despite centuries and generations of failure

1285. since solomon and before solomon

1286. god still keeps his promise

1287. and despite our ongoing failure

  1288. the promise still stands

  1289. look at verse 14

1290. he redeemed us in order that the blessings

1291. things given to abraham might come to the gentiles

  1292. to people like us

  1293. this promised blessing

1294. of a people living under god's loving rule

  1295. and enjoying his favor

  1296. forever and ever

  1297. that promise

  1298. extends to us

  1299. and is still alive

  1300. because god is faithful

1301. to you and to me

1302. that's why we can be guaranteed of our place

  1303. in the new world

  1304. but second

  1305. faith in christ

1306. because this promise still stands

1307. and the way to receive that promise

1308. to experience and to know it for ourselves

  1309. is by faith

1310. so look at verse 14 again

1311. he redeemed us in order that the blessing

  1312. given to abraham

1313. might come to the gentiles

  1314. that's people like us

  1315. through christ jesus

1316. or as he's been saying all the way through chapter 3

  1317. through faith

  1318. you see christ came

  1319. to take our failure

  1320. and the suffering

1321. and the suffering that we deserve

1322. he took the curse upon himself

1323. so that we might receive

1324. the blessings of the promise

1325. the promises that god has made

  1326. are now ours

1327. through our faith in christ jesus

  1328. the promise of forgiveness

1329. of adoption into his family

1330. to be loved and cared for now

  1331. and for all eternity

  1332. and when christ returns

1333. we will receive the fullness

  1334. of the promise

  1335. life forever

  1336. in the new creation

  1337. god's beautiful new world

  1338. our place is guaranteed

  1339. because god is faithful

  1340. and because of faith

  1341. in what christ

  1342. has done

  1343. and achieved

  1344. for us

1345. but here's the third reason

  1346. filled with the spirit

1347. look at the end of verse 14

  1348. so the blessings

1349. so the blessings might come

  1350. to people like us

  1351. through christ jesus

  1352. so that by faith

  1353. we might receive

  1354. the promise

  1355. of the spirit

  1356. to guarantee

  1357. our place

  1358. in god's new world

1359. god has given to us

  1360. his holy spirit

1361. the spirit is like god's

1362. seal of blessing upon us

  1363. a mark upon us

  1364. to say

  1365. you are mine

1366. and you belong to me

  1367. and where i am

  1368. you will be

  1369. we are never ever
