  1. 5, which I think is on page 340, 1 Kings chapter 5.

    1 Kings 5 chapter mention

  2. What we've been doing over the last number of weeks is, our practices is to work through

  3. a book of the Bible, and we've been looking at Kings, which, well, it's all about Kings.

  4. And we're in chapter 5, we're going to look at chapter 5 to 7 this morning. We're just

  5. going to follow along and see what the Bible, what Scripture, what God's Word has to say

  6. to us and how it applies to us. And this morning, we're going to need to put on hard hats. So

  7. if you've got hard hats and a trowel and working boots, because we're going to go into a construction

  8. site. I don't know if there's any builders here, but we're going to go walking through

  9. a construction site. And you go, well, that sounds a bit boring. Well, I'm going to do

  10. my very best to show you that it is not boring, but very, very exciting. So let's pray and ask

  11. for God's help as we look at God's Word, 1 Kings chapter 5 to 7. Let's pray and ask for

    1 Kings 5 chapter mention

  12. his help.

  13. Father, we thank you for all that you provide, and we thank you that we have your Word, the

  14. Bible, in our own language that we can read. Thank you that we have the freedom to meet

  15. as we are right now in this building. And we ask that you would pour out and give to us

  16. your Holy Spirit's power so that the words that we read and look at together would be life-giving

  17. words, life-changing words. And help us to see the wonder that God lives with us and we can

  18. live with God. We ask for your help in Jesus' name. Amen.

  19. Well, you may be familiar with the television program Grand Designs. It follows the stories

  20. of those who plan to build their dream home. So whether it's a glass house in the middle of a forest

  21. or a wooden dome that's perched on the edge of a cliff, we get to see the design and the

  22. decor and then finally we get a visual tour through the finished construction. You see,

  23. when the building is all done, the building becomes a home for a family. That was always

  24. the plan. It might start off with measurements on paper, but it was always meant to be a home,

  25. a place to live. Well, in 1 Kings chapters 5 to 7, which are really quite long and lengthy,

    1 Kings 5 chapter mention

  26. it might seem like an early version of Grand Designs. We even get to go through a visual tour

  27. because Solomon, who's the king, is about to build a temple. Look at chapter 5, verse 5.

  28. Solomon says, I intend therefore to build a temple for the name of the Lord my God.

  29. And for three whole chapters we go into construction overload. We're even told all about the workforce.

  30. So chapter 5, that's where it's got a big 5, and then to verse 15, little number 15.

  31. It tells us there that Solomon had 70,000 carriers and 80,000 stonecutters in the hill,

  32. as well as 3,300 foremen who supervised the project and directed the workers. What a lot of people

  33. are, of course, of course, of course. And if we're not bored already, we get bamboozled with all kinds

  34. of measurements. So look at chapter 6, verse 2. The temple that King Solomon built for the Lord was

  35. 60 cubits long and 20 wide and 30 high. Down at verse 6, the lowest floor was 5 cubits wide,

  36. the middle floor 6 cubits, the third floor 7. He made offset ledges around the outside of the temple

  37. so that nothing would be inserted into the temple walls. Still with me? And then the decorators arrived.

  38. Look at verse 29 of chapter 6. On the walls all around the temple, in both the inner and the outer rooms,

  39. he carved cherubim, which were like angels, palm trees and open flowers. And then he's getting

  40. so excited and thinks everybody loves architecture that we get a detailed tour of the whole entrance

  41. to the temple. So look at chapter 7, verse 15. Chapter 7, verse 15. He cast two bronze pillars,

  42. each 18 cubits high and 12 cubits in circumference. Verse 18. He made pomegranates in two rows encircling

  43. around these great big pillars. And then verse 21. He erected the pillars at the portico, that's at the

  44. entrance of the temple. And then he gets really excited and really passionate because he starts giving

  45. them names. The pillar to the south he named Jachin and the one to the north he named Boaz.

  46. Well, if you've managed to get to chapter 5 and you're still awake, you're doing really well.

  47. All this talk of cubits and cherubs and pillars and pomegranates, what's it all about?

  48. Well, behind all the design and all the detail, we must not miss the purpose. When all the building

  49. is done, it becomes a home. That was always the plan. It might start off with measurements,

  50. but it was always meant to be a home, a place to live. Here's the first thing we're going to learn

  51. about this great big construction. First, God longs to live with us. It's a promise to dwell

  52. with his people. Let's go to chapter 6, verse 1. Chapter 6, verse 1. In the 480th year, after the

  53. Israelites came out of Egypt, in the fourth year of Solomon's reign over Israel, in the month of Ziv,

  54. anybody birthday here in Ziv? The second month, he began to build the temple of the Lord. Now, dates may

  55. seem very unimportant and all may sound very tedious, but these dates act as promise reminders.

  56. You see, 480 years ago, God had rescued the people of Israel from slavery and when he rescued them,

  57. he made this promise. Here it is. You can read it on the screen. Here was God's promise. He said to the

  58. people, let them make a sanctuary for me and I will dwell among them. This was God's desire, God's longing

  59. to be with his people. He had delivered them from slavery so that he might dwell with them.

  60. Now, we might be very familiar with the month of Ziv or have any anniversaries in Ziv,

  61. but it's a reminder. It reminds us that God made a promise to live with his people and when God makes

  62. a promise, he always keeps his promise. This might be a 480 year old promise, but it's a promise and God

  63. keeps his promise to his people. So, under Solomon, God's dwelling place, the temple gets built.

  64. So, it's a promise to dwell and therefore it's a place to live. Look at chapter 6, verse 2.

  65. The temple that King Solomon built for the Lord was 60 cubits long, 20 wide and 30 high. Now, we'll come

  66. back to that structure in a minute, but let's not miss the point of what verse 2 tells us. This was a

  67. building, verse 2, for the Lord. A place for God to live. Could you imagine a house?

  68. Where God could live? Now, that might cause us a little bit of difficulty. How could God live in a temple?

  69. How do you squeeze God into a temple? Remember what God had said through the prophet Isaiah.

  70. Again, you can read it on the screen. God said, heaven is my throne and earth is my footstool.

  71. It's like you can picture God in his greatness, resting his feet, as it were, upon the world.

  72. Where is the house that you would build for me? And where is my resting place be?

  73. Has not my hand made all these things? I've made the world. I've created the world so that they come

  74. into being. You see, it's actually impossible to contain the creator of the universe into a man-made temple.

  75. You can't squeeze God down and push him into a box. God doesn't live in temples or in any other building.

  76. So why on earth is Solomon building a place for God to live?

  77. Well, it's God's means of making himself accessible to the people.

  78. The redeeming God longs to reside with his people.

  79. It's God's way of saying, I want to be with you.

  80. It's like when we got married and Kirsty and I moved into our house together.

  81. You can't get a stronger statement of saying, I want to be with you.

  82. I want to live with you. I want to dwell with you.

  83. You see, Jerusalem was at the very centre of Israel, the centre of the country.

  84. And the temple was at the very centre of Jerusalem.

  85. And God was setting up his home in the temple.

  86. And it's like God is saying, I can't get close enough.

  87. I long to live with my people.

  88. So I'm going to have a temple made so I can dwell with my people.

  89. So God longs to live with us.

  90. That's the first thing we learn.

  91. The second thing we're going to learn is that God's presence makes everything new.

  92. So when God comes to live with us, he makes everything new.

  93. First, eat and remember.

  94. Let's go back and look at the design of the temple.

  95. Chapter 6, verse 2.

  96. Okay, they were told that Solomon built the temple.

  97. It was 60 cubits long, 20 wide and 30 high.

  98. So that's about 24 metres long, 9 metres wide and 14 metres high.

  99. So we've actually got a visual.

  100. I did it myself.

  101. We've got a visual demonstration for you.

  102. It's this building we're in right here.

  103. I provided it for you.

  104. Wasn't that good?

  105. It's roughly, what, 24 metres long, give or take 9 metres wide, 14 metres high.

  106. This is what the temple shape was kind of like.

  107. And in terms of its dimensions, look at chapter 6, verse 3.

  108. The portico, the entrance to the front of the main hall of the temple, extended the width of the temple.

  109. So kind of think down that end.

  110. The other side, you've got a great big entrance, which is about 9 metres wide and about 4 metres out.

  111. So a lovely big entrance.

  112. And inside the main hall, which is this area here, there was a smaller hall, which we read about in verse 19.

  113. He prepared the inner sanctuary within the temple to set the Ark of the Covenant of the Lord.

  114. The Ark of the Covenant was symbolic of God's presence.

  115. So see where these screens are here.

  116. This was kind of like the inner sanctuary, where the Ark was, which was symbolic of God's presence.

  117. So this was the big temple, the outer hall, the inner hall.

  118. This is what it was like.

  119. But what I want us to do now is, I want us to look at the decor.

  120. Look at the decoration of this temple.

  121. Look at verse 19.

  122. Sorry, verse 18.

  123. Chapter 6, verse 18.

  124. The inside of the temple was cedar.

  125. Beautiful carved wood.

  126. Carved with gourds.

  127. Anybody grow any gourds?

  128. You probably don't know what they are, but I think you do know what they are.

  129. They're things like pumpkins and marrows and squash.

  130. Those kinds of fruits and vegetables.

  131. And open flowers.

  132. Everything was cedar.

  133. No stone was to be seen.

  134. Now look down at verse 29.

  135. On the walls, all around the temple, in both the inner and the outer rooms,

  136. he carved cherubim, which were like little angels.

  137. Palm trees and open flowers.

  138. He also covered the floors of both the inner and the outer rooms of the temple with gold.

  139. So here we are.

  140. Can you imagine this room?

  141. Covered in panels all the way around in beautiful cedar wood.

  142. And everywhere you looked around inside this room,

  143. there were these elaborate, beautiful carvings of fruit and vegetables and trees and flowers everywhere,

  144. all over the place.

  145. It was like an artistic garden show.

  146. And then to display their full glory, it was all overlaid with gold.

  147. And in case we miss the point, look at verse 31.

  148. The entrance to the inner sanctuary, he made the doors out of olive wood.

  149. Verse 32.

  150. And on the two olive wooden doors, he carved more cherubim and palm trees and open flowers

  151. and overlaid the cherubim and palm trees with hammered gold.

  152. And he did the same with the main entrance.

  153. Verse 35.

  154. He carved more cherubim and palm trees and open flowers

  155. and had them overlaid with gold hammered evenly over all the carvings.

  156. It's a magnificent work of art.

  157. You could imagine as you came to the entrance of this temple and all the carvings.

  158. It was literally like walking into a garden.

  159. And once you got inside, everything you saw, all the decoration, all the carvings,

  160. was everything that you would find in a garden.

  161. Trees, flowers, fruits.

  162. All these open blossom flowers, all carved beautifully on the walls.

  163. The beauty of creation on display.

  164. It was just like the Garden of Eden where God first walked and dwelled with his people.

  165. Paradise itself.

  166. Now the Garden of Eden was not only a place of God's presence,

  167. but the Garden of Eden was also a place of peace.

  168. It was beauty and harmony.

  169. There was no chaos and disorder in the Garden of Eden right at the very beginning.

  170. And the temple that Solomon was building was to reflect it.

  171. So outside the temple,

  172. so if you can imagine here we are in the temple,

  173. outside in the car park area,

  174. was this huge basin of water.

  175. Could you imagine like a mini swimming pool?

  176. And it was called the sea.

  177. Look at chapter 7, verse 23.

  178. Chapter 7, verse 23.

  179. He made the sea of cast metal,

  180. circular in shape,

  181. measuring 10 cubits from rim to rim,

  182. 5 cubits high.

  183. And it took a line of 30 cubits to measure around it.

  184. So you imagine this great big metal basin sitting outside there in the car park.

  185. It goes 5 metres from one side to the other,

  186. 3 metres deep,

  187. and 14 metres all the way around.

  188. Now look at the end of verse 26.

  189. We're told at the end of verse 26 that it held 2,000 baths.

  190. That's a measurement.

  191. That's about 44,000 litres of water.

  192. So you can imagine it's like a swimming pool.

  193. But no wonder it was called a sea,

  194. because it was like a mini little sea.

  195. But why on earth?

  196. Just think about it.

  197. Why would Solomon,

  198. after he's built this temple,

  199. then build this sea

  200. out in the middle of the courtyard,

  201. outside?

  202. Why build a sea?

  203. Well, the sea in the Bible

  204. is often associated with evil forces of chaos and destruction.

  205. And outside the temple,

  206. the place of God's presence,

  207. it's like the sea is now contained

  208. in this great metal basin.

  209. All the forces of destruction and chaos,

  210. as it were,

  211. have now been calmed.

  212. That was the symbolism.

  213. There was now peace.

  214. You see,

  215. the temple that Solomon was building

  216. was to demonstrate

  217. what life would be like

  218. when God lives

  219. and dwells with his people.

  220. It will just be like what it was

  221. in the Garden of Eden,

  222. a beautiful new creation

  223. where everything is wonderful and good.

  224. The absence of all evil,

  225. like paradise itself.

  226. God's presence,

  227. when he comes down to live with his people,

  228. makes everything wonderfully new.

  229. So God lives with us.

  230. God's presence makes everything new.

  231. But God has demands

  232. when we're going to live with him.

  233. He has demands if we're going to live with him.

  234. Let's look at these conditions.

  235. As we take this visual tour

  236. through the temple,

  237. God suddenly interrupts and speaks.

  238. In fact,

  239. over the course of these three chapters,

  240. we don't see God directly speaking,

  241. but only once.

  242. And it comes in chapter 6,

  243. verse 11.

  244. Have a look in your Bible,

  245. chapter 6, verse 11.

  246. So we're getting all this construction design.

  247. It's all very elaborate.

  248. And then God suddenly speaks

  249. into the middle of it.

  250. Look what he says,

  251. chapter 6, verse 11.

  252. The word of the Lord came to Solomon.

  253. As for this temple you are building,

  254. if you follow my decrees,

  255. observe my laws,

  256. and keep all my commands,

  257. and obey them,

  258. I will fulfill through you

  259. the promise I gave to David your father.

  260. Here it is.

  261. And I will live among the Israelites,

  262. and I won't abandon my people Israel.

  263. It's only a two-letter word,

  264. but God's promise depends on it.

  265. If you follow my decrees,

  266. if you observe all my laws,

  267. if you obey my commands,

  268. if, if,

  269. then I will live among you

  270. and I will not abandon you.

  271. It sounds so easy,

  272. doesn't it?

  273. Do what I say,

  274. says God,

  275. and you will experience my promise.

  276. I will live with you

  277. and I will dwell with you,

  278. and everything will be put right.

  279. Everything will be beautiful

  280. and everything will be good.

  281. Just simply obey.

  282. Forget all the decor

  283. and all the gold

  284. and all the carvings.

  285. Look at your heart.

  286. Just obey me,

  287. says God,

  288. and you will experience my presence.

  289. Sounds so easy.

  290. Well, let's see how Solomon got on.

  291. Look at chapter 6, verse 37.

  292. Here we come to the end

  293. of the building project.

  294. Chapter 6, verse 37,

  295. the foundation of the temple

  296. of the Lord was laid

  297. in the fourth year

  298. in the month of Ziph,

  299. in the eleventh year

  300. in the month of Bull,

  301. the eighth month,

  302. the temple was finished.

  303. Forget the dates,

  304. we just want to know

  305. that the temple is finished.

  306. And all its details

  307. according to its specifications.

  308. He had spent seven years

  309. building it.

  310. What a mammoth construction.

  311. Seven years.

  312. All those people

  313. building this great big temple.

  314. But let's not stop there.

  315. Let's keep reading.

  316. Chapter 7, verse 1.

  317. It took Solomon

  318. 13 years, however,

  319. to complete the construction

  320. of his palace.

  321. Something doesn't seem right,

  322. does it?

  323. Seven years to build a home

  324. for the Creator,

  325. the Redeemer of the world,

  326. and yet Solomon needed

  327. 13 years to build

  328. his own home.

  329. It says something

  330. about his priorities,

  331. doesn't it?

  332. Look at verse 2

  333. of chapter 7.

  334. He built the palace.

  335. What a wonderful

  336. grand title

  337. for your house.

  338. The palace

  339. of the forest

  340. of Lebanon.

  341. What a title.

  342. What a place

  343. this must have been.

  344. We can look

  345. at the measurements.

  346. 45 metres long,

  347. 23 metres wide,

  348. 14 metres high.

  349. You know what?

  350. It's double the size

  351. of the temple

  352. that he built for God.

  353. And then we look

  354. in verse 6.

  355. The entrance

  356. that he made

  357. to his palace

  358. was even bigger

  359. than the temple itself.

  360. It seems

  361. that Solomon

  362. is more interested

  363. in building

  364. a palace

  365. for his name

  366. and making

  367. his name great

  368. and God

  369. is clearly

  370. taking second place.

  371. This reminds me

  372. of all the many,

  373. many promises

  374. that I was made

  375. as a kid.

  376. My parents

  377. would say to me,

  378. Johnny,

  379. you can stay up

  380. later

  381. if you clean up

  382. your room.

  383. Johnny,

  384. you can watch TV

  385. if you first

  386. do your homework.

  387. Johnny,

  388. you can have dessert

  389. if you finish up

  390. all your dinner.

  391. But I never

  392. got to experience

  393. the promised blessings

  394. because I could

  395. never keep

  396. the ifs.

  397. And that's

  398. what happened

  399. to Solomon.

  400. He messed up

  401. his priority.

  402. They were a sign

  403. of the disobedience

  404. to come.

  405. He couldn't

  406. keep the ifs.

  407. And God

  408. withdrew his presence

  409. and as we read

  410. on in the story,

  411. in time to come,

  412. the temple

  413. would actually

  414. get destroyed,

  415. obliterated.

  416. And instead

  417. of everything

  418. being made new,

  419. it all descended

  420. into chaos

  421. and disorder.

  422. God's promise

  423. to be with

  424. his people,

  425. it didn't happen.

  426. You see,

  427. God has demands

  428. when it comes

  429. to knowing

  430. and enjoying

  431. his presence.

  432. But the problem

  433. is,

  434. the same with

  435. Solomon,

  436. it's exactly

  437. the same with us.

  438. We've got hearts

  439. that are more

  440. interested

  441. in building up

  442. our own lives

  443. and building up

  444. our own name.

  445. And God

  446. comes a very,

  447. very distant

  448. second.

  449. You see,

  450. unless we love

  451. and obey

  452. God with

  453. all our heart,

  454. we will never

  455. ever get

  456. to enjoy

  457. his presence.

  458. What are we

  459. going to do?

  460. Well,

  461. the good news

  462. is,

  463. God makes

  464. it possible

  465. for people

  466. like us

  467. to live

  468. with him.

  469. look at

  470. our history.

  471. I want you

  472. to imagine

  473. for a minute,

  474. put on your

  475. thinking caps

  476. here,

  477. that you're

  478. standing outside,

  479. this is this

  480. temple,

  481. all the carvings,

  482. all the gold,

  483. all the beauty,

  484. the big swimming

  485. pool outside,

  486. the sea out

  487. there,

  488. the entrance,

  489. you're at the

  490. entrance.

  491. And as you

  492. come up to

  493. these great

  494. big doors

  495. to come into

  496. the temple,

  497. remember the

  498. temple is where

  499. God is,

  500. where God's

  501. presence is,

  502. this is where

  503. you come to

  504. meet God.

  505. The design

  506. is so important.

  507. As you come

  508. up to the

  509. temple,

  510. you discover,

  511. have a look at

  512. chapter 7

  513. verse 21,

  514. you're reminded

  515. that we need

  516. to get our

  517. heads around

  518. this now,

  519. a little bit

  520. of thinking,

  521. chapter 7

  522. verse 21,

  523. we're told

  524. that one of

  525. the pillars

  526. is to the

  527. south and

  528. one is to

  529. the north.

  530. That simply

  531. means that

  532. the temple

  533. is facing

  534. in an

  535. eastwardly

  536. direction.

  537. Now you're

  538. going,

  539. Johnny,

  540. what are you

  541. going on

  542. about?

  543. I've

  544. followed you

  545. so far,

  546. but what's

  547. all this

  548. about the

  549. temple being

  550. in an

  551. eastwardly

  552. direction?

  553. What's so

  554. important about

  555. that?

  556. Well,

  557. think back

  558. to the

  559. Garden of

  560. Eden,

  561. where God

  562. walked and

  563. talked and

  564. dwelled with

  565. the first

  566. people,

  567. Adam and

  568. Eve.

  569. But because

  570. of their

  571. disobedience,

  572. what happened?

  573. they got

  574. removed from

  575. the garden,

  576. they got

  577. removed from

  578. God's presence

  579. and this is

  580. what it says

  581. in Genesis,

  582. you can read

  583. it here on

  584. the screen.

  585. After God

  586. drove the

  587. man out,

  588. he placed

  589. on the

  590. east side

  591. of the

  592. Garden of

  593. Eden

  594. cherubim

  595. and a

  596. flaming sword

  597. flashing back

  598. and forth

  599. to guard

  600. the way

  601. to the

  602. tree of

  603. life.

  604. So God

  605. was saying

  606. to them,

  607. because you've

  608. rebelled

  609. against me,

  610. you can't

  611. be in

  612. my presence,

  613. you can't

  614. be with

  615. me,

  616. you can't

  617. enjoy me,

  618. you can't

  619. know me.

  620. Now go

  621. back to

  622. the temple

  623. that we

  624. were thinking

  625. about.

  626. There you

  627. are at

  628. the entrance

  629. and as

  630. you come

  631. from the

  632. east,

  633. you're

  634. coming up

  635. to the

  636. temple

  637. and on

  638. these great

  639. big double

  640. doors,

  641. what's

  642. carved on

  643. the doors,

  644. do you

  645. remember?

  646. Cherubi.

  647. Those angels

  648. and you're

  649. reminded

  650. you cannot

  651. enter the

  652. presence of

  653. God,

  654. you're not

  655. allowed in.

  656. Everywhere

  657. all over

  658. the door

  659. are these

  660. symbols,

  661. these cherubim

  662. which is

  663. telling you

  664. you can't

  665. get in,

  666. you can't

  667. live with

  668. God,

  669. you can't

  670. be in

  671. his presence.

  672. Now we

  673. mightn't have

  674. any cherubim

  675. as you came

  676. in the doors

  677. this morning

  678. but you

  679. know what?

  680. It's

  681. telling us

  682. the same

  683. thing.

  684. This is

  685. our history,

  686. this is

  687. our story.

  688. God has

  689. made it

  690. crystal clear

  691. that when

  692. we turn

  693. against him

  694. we cannot

  695. live with

  696. him and

  697. enjoy his

  698. presence.

  699. So how

  700. do we?

  701. Well,

  702. it's all

  703. because of

  704. God's

  705. stubborn

  706. grace.

  707. Go to

  708. chapter 7

  709. verse 21

  710. again.

  711. There we

  712. are,

  713. picture

  714. yourself

  715. at the

  716. temple

  717. doors,

  718. the

  719. cherubim

  720. telling you

  721. you can't

  722. come in,

  723. you can't

  724. come into

  725. God's

  726. presence

  727. and then

  728. either side,

  729. what's

  730. either side

  731. of the

  732. doors?

  733. These

  734. enormous

  735. great big

  736. pillars,

  737. eight metres

  738. high,

  739. five and a

  740. half metres

  741. in circumference,

  742. huge big

  743. pillars supporting

  744. the entrance.

  745. But you

  746. see what

  747. they're

  748. called,

  749. they're

  750. given names

  751. aren't

  752. they?

  753. The pillar

  754. to the

  755. south is

  756. named

  757. Jachin and

  758. the one

  759. to the

  760. north is

  761. called

  762. Boaz.

  763. Now these

  764. aren't the

  765. names of

  766. his pet

  767. hamsters.

  768. This is

  769. God's

  770. stubborn

  771. grace.

  772. You know

  773. what Jachin

  774. means?

  775. You might

  776. have a little

  777. footnote in

  778. your Bible.

  779. it means

  780. God

  781. establishes.

  782. And you

  783. know what

  784. Boaz

  785. means?

  786. God is

  787. strength.

  788. So as you

  789. look at one

  790. pillar, it

  791. reminds us of

  792. what God

  793. said he

  794. will do.

  795. I will

  796. establish my

  797. promise to

  798. live with

  799. my people.

  800. And they

  801. look at the

  802. other pillar

  803. and it

  804. reminds them

  805. of how God

  806. will do

  807. it.

  808. I will

  809. fulfil my

  810. promise by

  811. my power.

  812. So in

  813. the face

  814. of all

  815. the rebellion

  816. that is

  817. going on,

  818. we have

  819. God's

  820. stubborn

  821. grace as

  822. if God

  823. is digging

  824. his heels

  825. in and

  826. he's saying

  827. I will

  828. dwell with

  829. my people

  830. and not

  831. even sin

  832. is going

  833. to stop

  834. it or

  835. get in

  836. the way.

  837. My

  838. promise

  839. to live

  840. with my

  841. people

  842. will be

  843. fulfilled

  844. by my

  845. power.

  846. well we

  847. are living

  848. a long

  849. long

  850. ways

  851. from the

  852. temple

  853. of

  854. Solomon

  855. aren't

  856. we?

  857. How does

  858. this promise

  859. ever come

  860. about?

  861. Well the

  862. beauty is

  863. God's

  864. promise

  865. to live

  866. with his

  867. people

  868. becomes

  869. a reality

  870. with the

  871. coming of

  872. Jesus Christ.

  873. through

  874. Jesus

  875. God

  876. now

  877. lives

  878. with us.

  879. Let me

  880. show you

  881. I want to

  882. show you

  883. as we

  884. bring this

  885. to a

  886. conclusion

  887. how we

  888. can

  889. experience

  890. God's

  891. presence

  892. ourself.

  893. Have a

  894. look at

  895. Ephesians

    Ephesians 2 chapter mention

  896. chapter 2

  897. it's in

  898. the New

  899. Testament

  900. Galatians

  901. Ephesians

  902. if somebody's

  903. got a page

  904. number

  905. please shout

  906. it out for

  907. me loud

  908. and clear

  909. Ephesians

    Ephesians 2 chapter mention

  910. chapter 2

  911. thank you

  912. very much

  913. 1 1

  914. 7 4

  915. Ephesians

    Ephesians 2 chapter mention

  916. chapter 2

  917. and we're

  918. going to

  919. look at

  920. verse 21

  921. 1 1

  922. 7 4

  923. is that

  924. right?

  925. Yep

  926. 1 1 7

  927. 4

  928. Ephesians

    Ephesians 2 chapter mention

  929. chapter 2

  930. and again

  931. okay

  932. don't take

  933. off your

  934. hard hats

  935. put them

  936. back on

  937. again

  938. put on

  939. your

  940. building

  941. shoes

  942. and your

  943. trowels

  944. because there's

  945. more building

  946. going on

  947. here

  948. okay

  949. it all

  950. fits in

  951. with the

  952. imagery

  953. verse 21

  954. in him

  955. that is

  956. it's talking

  957. about Jesus

  958. in Jesus

  959. the whole

  960. building

  961. is joined

  962. together

  963. and rises

  964. to become

  965. a holy

  966. temple

  967. in the

  968. Lord

  969. so what

  970. it's telling

  971. us here

  972. is that

  973. Jesus

  974. has come

  975. and Jesus

  976. is now

  977. himself

  978. is like

  979. the builder

  980. and Jesus

  981. is building

  982. a new

  983. temple

  984. not a

  985. physical

  986. temple

  987. made of

  988. wood

  989. and stone

  990. but Jesus

  991. is building

  992. a living

  993. temple

  994. a temple

  995. whose

  996. stones

  997. are people

  998. people

  999. like you

  1000. and me

  1001. look at

  1002. verse 22

  1003. and in

  1004. him

  1005. in Jesus

  1006. you too

  1007. are being

  1008. built

  1009. together

  1010. to become

  1011. a dwelling

  1012. in which

  1013. God lives

  1014. by his

  1015. spirit

  1016. so here's

  1017. the picture

  1018. that I

  1019. want us

  1020. to get

  1021. as we

  1022. come to

  1023. Jesus

  1024. as we

  1025. repent

  1026. of our

  1027. sin

  1028. and our

  1029. rebellion

  1030. as we

  1031. trust in

  1032. Jesus

  1033. as we

  1034. build our

  1035. life on

  1036. the foundation

  1037. of Jesus

  1038. Christ

  1039. he takes

  1040. us

  1041. and he

  1042. builds

  1043. us

  1044. together

  1045. to be

  1046. a dwelling

  1047. place

  1048. in which

  1049. God lives

  1050. by his

  1051. spirit

  1052. he takes

  1053. all our

  1054. mess

  1055. and all

  1056. our

  1057. brokenness

  1058. and as

  1059. he died

  1060. on the

  1061. cross

  1062. he takes

  1063. the blame

  1064. for the

  1065. things that

  1066. we have

  1067. done wrong

  1068. and he

  1069. makes us

  1070. wonderfully

  1071. new

  1072. people

  1073. and he

  1074. builds

  1075. us

  1076. together

  1077. piece

  1078. by piece

  1079. so that

  1080. God

  1081. could dwell

  1082. and live

  1083. amongst

  1084. his

  1085. people

  1086. so as

  1087. the

  1088. temple

  1089. and that

  1090. is what

  1091. we're

  1092. looking at

  1093. here

  1094. right now

  1095. not the

  1096. concrete

  1097. walls

  1098. around us

  1099. here

  1100. but the

  1101. people

  1102. the temple

  1103. are the

  1104. people

  1105. those who

  1106. trust in

  1107. Jesus

  1108. Christ

  1109. God

  1110. is

  1111. here

  1112. the

  1113. creator

  1114. of the

  1115. universe

  1116. is present

  1117. by his

  1118. holy spirit

  1119. now as

  1120. you come

  1121. here into

  1122. this temple

  1123. of God's

  1124. people

  1125. as you

  1126. look around

  1127. you're not

  1128. going to

  1129. see carved

  1130. wood

  1131. and trees

  1132. and cherubim

  1133. and gourds

  1134. and pomegranates

  1135. and all of

  1136. this stuff

  1137. but you know

  1138. what you're

  1139. going to

  1140. see

  1141. you're going

  1142. to see

  1143. new people

  1144. new creations

  1145. people who

  1146. are being

  1147. restored and

  1148. made more

  1149. and more

  1150. like the

  1151. Lord Jesus

  1152. Christ

  1153. that is the

  1154. new creation

  1155. that God

  1156. is bringing

  1157. about

  1158. and God

  1159. is saying

  1160. I am

  1161. living

  1162. amongst

  1163. you

  1164. and I

  1165. am

  1166. dwelling

  1167. amongst

  1168. you

  1169. but there's

  1170. one last

  1171. piece of

  1172. construction

  1173. that I

  1174. must show

  1175. you

  1176. because even

  1177. as we

  1178. dwell

  1179. together

  1180. and God

  1181. is present

  1182. by his

  1183. spirit

  1184. there is

  1185. still chaos

  1186. and disorder

  1187. around this

  1188. world

  1189. isn't there

  1190. there's still

  1191. broken lives

  1192. there's still

  1193. things that

  1194. go wrong

  1195. but one

  1196. day God

  1197. has promised

  1198. that he

  1199. will come

  1200. again

  1201. and we

  1202. will be

  1203. able to

  1204. enjoy the

  1205. fullness of

  1206. his presence

  1207. for all

  1208. eternity

  1209. go to the

  1210. very last

  1211. book of

  1212. your Bible

  1213. Revelation

    Revelation 21 chapter mention

  1214. chapter 21

  1215. and here's

  1216. where all

  1217. this construction

  1218. that we've

  1219. looked at

  1220. comes to

  1221. its finished

  1222. design

  1223. and wonderful

  1224. conclusion

  1225. it's a

  1226. building

  1227. project

  1228. that is

  1229. still going

  1230. on as it

  1231. were

  1232. but one

  1233. day we

  1234. will get

  1235. to experience

  1236. it and

  1237. we will

  1238. know it

  1239. fully and

  1240. completely

  1241. Revelation

    Revelation 21 chapter mention

  1242. chapter 21

  1243. at the very

  1244. end of your

  1245. Bible

  1246. let me read

  1247. Revelation 21

    Revelation 21:1

  1248. verse 1

  1249. it's like

  1250. a picture

  1251. of Eden

  1252. Eden

  1253. restored

  1254. everything

  1255. put right

  1256. here's the

  1257. picture

  1258. then I saw

  1259. a new

  1260. heaven and

  1261. a new

  1262. earth

  1263. for the

  1264. first heaven

  1265. and the

  1266. first earth

  1267. had passed

  1268. away

  1269. and there

  1270. was no

  1271. longer

  1272. any

  1273. what

  1274. any

  1275. sea

  1276. the chaos

  1277. the disorder

  1278. the evil

  1279. the destruction

  1280. it's all

  1281. gone

  1282. it's no

  1283. longer

  1284. there

  1285. and verse

  1286. 2

  1287. I saw

  1288. the holy

  1289. city

  1290. the new

  1291. Jerusalem

  1292. now we're

  1293. talking temple

  1294. language again

  1295. coming down

  1296. from heaven

  1297. from God

  1298. prepared as a

  1299. bride beautifully

  1300. dressed for her

  1301. husband

  1302. and I heard a

  1303. loud voice

  1304. from the throne

  1305. saying look

  1306. God's dwelling

  1307. place

  1308. is now

  1309. among the

  1310. people

  1311. and he will

  1312. dwell with

  1313. them

  1314. and they

  1315. will be his

  1316. people

  1317. and God

  1318. himself

  1319. will be

  1320. with them

  1321. and be

  1322. their God

  1323. and he

  1324. will wipe

  1325. away every

  1326. tear from

  1327. their eyes

  1328. and there

  1329. will be no

  1330. more death

  1331. or mourning

  1332. or crying

  1333. or pain

  1334. for the old

  1335. order of things

  1336. has passed

  1337. away

  1338. and he

  1339. who is

  1340. seated on

  1341. the throne

  1342. said I

  1343. am making

  1344. everything

  1345. new

  1346. the finished

  1347. construction

  1348. project

  1349. of God's

  1350. new world

  1351. where we

  1352. can dwell

  1353. with him

  1354. forever

  1355. and forever

  1356. this is

  1357. God's

  1358. stubborn

  1359. grace

  1360. he made

  1361. a promise

  1362. I will

  1363. dwell

  1364. with my

  1365. people

  1366. he has

  1367. done that

  1368. through

  1369. Christ

  1370. and his

  1371. promise

  1372. keeping

  1373. power

  1374. will ensure

  1375. that if we

  1376. trust in him

  1377. we will

  1378. live with him

  1379. forever

  1380. and forever

  1381. and forever

  1382. do you

  1383. know God's

  1384. presence

  1385. with you

  1386. today

  1387. are you

  1388. sure

  1389. that you

  1390. will dwell

  1391. with him

  1392. for all

  1393. eternity

  1394. in God's

  1395. new heaven

  1396. and new

  1397. earth

  1398. what an

  1399. amazing

  1400. prospect

  1401. that lies

  1402. ahead for

  1403. all who

  1404. love him

  1405. let's pray

  1406. father

  1407. father

  1408. father

  1409. god

  1410. we thank

  1411. you for

  1412. that promise

  1413. that god

  1414. would dwell

  1415. and live

  1416. with his

  1417. people

  1418. and we

  1419. thank you

  1420. that because

  1421. of jesus

  1422. we can

  1423. say

  1424. that god

  1425. is present

  1426. here

  1427. now by

  1428. his spirit

  1429. with his

  1430. people

  1431. and yet

  1432. we long

  1433. for that

  1434. day

  1435. we look

  1436. forward

  1437. to that

  1438. day

  1439. when god

  1440. will come

  1441. again in

  1442. all his

  1443. fullness

  1444. and we

  1445. will dwell

  1446. with him

  1447. in the

  1448. new

  1449. creation

  1450. father

  1451. keep us

  1452. until that

  1453. day we

  1454. pray

  1455. in jesus

  1456. name

  1457. amen

  1458. we're

  1459. going to

  1460. sing

  1461. name

  1462. of all

  1463. majesty

  1464. there's a

  1465. line in

  1466. it somewhere

  1467. if i could

  1468. find it

  1469. savior of

  1470. calvary

  1471. costliest

  1472. victory

  1473. darkness

  1474. defeated

  1475. and eden

  1476. restored

  1477. born as a

  1478. man to die

  1479. nailed

  1480. to a cross

  1481. on high

  1482. cold in the

  1483. grave to lie

  1484. jesus is

  1485. lord

  1486. this is our

  1487. wonderful truth

  1488. that we can

  1489. sing about

  1490. let's stand

  1491. together

  1492. as we sing

  1493. music

  1494. so

  1495. you
