  1. Kings 8, and that's page 344 of the Church Bible.

  2. That's 1 Kings 8.

  3. Then King Solomon summoned into his presence at Jerusalem the elders of Israel,

  4. all the heads of the tribes and the chiefs of the Israelite families,

  5. to bring up the Ark of the Lord's Covenant from Zion, the city of David.

  6. All the Israelites came together to King Solomon at the time of the festival in the month of Eternim,

  7. the seventh month.

  8. When all the elders of Israel had arrived, the priests took up the Ark,

  9. and they brought up the Ark of the Lord and the tent of meeting and all the sacred furnishings in it.

  10. The priests and Levites carried them up,

  11. and King Solomon and the entire assembly of Israel that had gathered about him

  12. were before the Ark, sacrificing so many sheep and cattle that they could not be recorded or counted.

  13. The priests then brought up the Ark of the Lord's Covenant to its place in the inner sanctuary of the temple,

  14. the most holy place, and put it beneath the wings of the cherubim.

  15. The cherubim spread their wings over the place of the Ark and overshadowed the Ark and its carrying poles.

  16. These poles were so long that their ends could be seen from the holy place in front of the inner sanctuary,

  17. but not from outside the holy place, and they are still there today.

  18. There was nothing in the Ark except the two stone tablets that Moses had placed in it at Horeb,

  19. where the Lord made a covenant with the Israelites after they came out of Egypt.

  20. When the priests withdrew from the holy place, the cloud filled the temple of the Lord,

  21. and the priests could not perform their service because of the cloud,

  22. for the glory of the Lord had filled his temple.

  23. Then Solomon said,

  24. The Lord has said that you would dwell in a dark cloud.

  25. I have indeed built a magnificent temple for you, a place for you to dwell forever.

  26. Thank you, A.V.

  27. Well, let's keep our Bibles open there and we'll pray.

  28. Father, thank you for your word,

  29. and we pray that you would bring great understanding and clarity where we do not understand.

  30. We pray that your Holy Spirit would help us

  31. to not only see and hear about your faithful love,

  32. but that each one of us would experience your faithful love in our hearts today.

  33. We pray this in Jesus' name.

  34. Amen.

  35. Well, before we start, just a brief reminder.

  36. Last time we were looking at Kings,

  37. we were looking at chapters 5 to 7,

  38. which was all about,

  39. it was like walking into a construction site,

  40. the building of the temple,

  41. a place for God.

  42. And, well, we continue on that theme.

  43. As God comes to be with his people.

  44. So, the title we've given it is The Perfect Marriage.

  45. I hope it will all come clear as we go along.

  46. Will you take her as your wife in marriage?

  47. Will you love her,

  48. comfort her,

  49. honour and keep her,

  50. in sickness and in health,

  51. and be faithful to her as long as you both shall live?

  52. I will.

  53. Maybe you have spoken those words.

  54. Marriage is a very special but yet solemn occasion.

  55. Man and woman stand before the congregation

  56. and make their vows and promises.

  57. From this day forward,

  58. as long as we both shall live,

  59. and before God,

  60. I give you my word.

  61. Now, marriage is the primary way

  62. in which the Bible describes

  63. our relationship to God.

  64. And chapter 8,

  65. the whole of chapter 8,

  66. verses 1 to 66,

  67. is like a celebration

  68. of God's marriage

  69. to his people.

  70. It's a reminder of God's

  71. faithful love.

  72. Look at verse 23.

  73. Lord,

  74. the God of Israel,

  75. there is no God like you

  76. in heaven above

  77. or on earth below.

  78. So what is it that distinguishes God

  79. from anything else

  80. or anyone else?

  81. Here it is.

  82. You who keep

  83. your covenant of love

  84. with your servants,

  85. who continue wholeheartedly

  86. in your way.

  87. You have kept your promise

  88. to your servant David,

  89. my father.

  90. With your mouth,

  91. you have promised

  92. and with your hand,

  93. you have fulfilled it

  94. as it is today.

  95. God's covenant love,

  96. his faithful love.

  97. Now, for a marriage,

  98. any marriage,

  99. if it's to last,

  100. demands that both parties

  101. remain loyal

  102. and faithful.

  103. But what keeps

  104. our marriage relationship

  105. to God

  106. is not our faithfulness,

  107. but God who keeps

  108. his covenant love

  109. with us.

  110. What will keep

  111. our marriage relationship

  112. to God intact

  113. is not our faithfulness,

  114. but God

  115. who keeps

  116. his covenant love.

  117. because when God

  118. promises to be faithful,

  119. we can depend upon it.

  120. There's four things

  121. we're going to see

  122. about this marriage.

  123. First,

  124. our marriage to God

  125. is dependent

  126. on God's covenant

  127. faithfulness.

  128. It's dependent

  129. on God's covenant

  130. faithfulness.

  131. You may have

  132. a little title

  133. at the beginning

  134. of chapter 8

  135. in your Bible

  136. which says

  137. something like this,

  138. the ark

  139. brought to the temple.

  140. Well, a better title,

  141. and again,

  142. the titles in our Bibles

  143. like the chapter headings

  144. are not inspired,

  145. but a better title

  146. would be

  147. God moves in

  148. with his people.

  149. Look at verse 1.

  150. Then King Solomon

  151. summoned

  152. into his presence

  153. at Jerusalem

  154. the elders of Israel,

  155. all the heads

  156. of the tribes

  157. and the chiefs

  158. of the Israelite families

  159. to bring up

  160. the ark

  161. of the Lord's covenant

  162. from Zion,

  163. the city of David.

  164. The first 13 verses

  165. that were read to us

  166. are all about

  167. the ark.

  168. Now, the ark

  169. isn't to be confused

  170. with Noah's ark.

  171. They're not,

  172. you know,

  173. kind of carrying

  174. this huge,

  175. big wooden boat up.

  176. The ark

  177. is a wooden box

  178. overlaid with gold

  179. which symbolised

  180. God's presence

  181. with his people.

  182. And now that the temple

  183. has been built,

  184. chapters 5 to 7,

  185. the ark

  186. is being brought

  187. to the temple.

  188. God is moving in.

  189. Verse 6.

  190. The priest

  191. then brought

  192. the ark

  193. of the Lord's covenant

  194. to its place

  195. in the inner sanctuary

  196. of the temple,

  197. the most holy place,

  198. and put it beneath

  199. the wings

  200. of the cherubim.

  201. Cherubim were angels,

  202. again,

  203. a symbol

  204. of God's presence.

  205. Now, before

  206. Kirsty and I

  207. got married,

  208. we lived in

  209. separate homes.

  210. But when we got married,

  211. after we had made

  212. our vows

  213. and our commitments

  214. to one another,

  215. we moved in

  216. to the same house.

  217. Our marriage

  218. brought us together

  219. in a lifelong union.

  220. And here God

  221. comes to

  222. move in

  223. to live

  224. with his people.

  225. Verse 10.

  226. When the priest

  227. withdrew

  228. from the holy place,

  229. the cloud

  230. filled the temple

  231. of the Lord

  232. and the priest

  233. couldn't perform

  234. their service

  235. because of the cloud

  236. for the glory

  237. of the Lord

  238. filled his temple.

  239. You may remember

  240. from other accounts

  241. in the Old Testament

  242. when God appears,

  243. very often

  244. it's in a cloud.

  245. God's presence

  246. has come

  247. to the temple.

  248. Verse 12.

  249. Then Solomon said,

  250. the Lord said

  251. that he would dwell

  252. in a dark cloud.

  253. I have indeed

  254. built a magnificent

  255. temple for you,

  256. a place

  257. for you

  258. to dwell

  259. forever.

  260. forever.

  261. So God

  262. moves in

  263. with his people.

  264. The marriage

  265. relationship.

  266. But what makes

  267. this marriage

  268. possible

  269. is God's

  270. faithfulness.

  271. Have a look back up

  272. at verse 9.

  273. There was

  274. nothing

  275. in the ark,

  276. there was

  277. nothing

  278. inside

  279. this

  280. wooden box

  281. except

  282. the two

  283. stone

  284. tablets

  285. that Moses

  286. had placed

  287. in it

  288. at Horeb

  289. where the

  290. Lord had

  291. made a

  292. covenant

  293. with the

  294. Israelites

  295. when they

  296. came out

  297. of Egypt.

  298. Now the

  299. stone

  300. tablets

  301. you remember

  302. were written

  303. or what

  304. was written

  305. on them

  306. were the

  307. ten commandments

  308. and they

  309. were placed

  310. inside

  311. the wooden

  312. box.

  313. The commandments

  314. were

  315. God's

  316. covenant

  317. with his

  318. people.

  319. It's like

  320. a marriage

  321. contract.

  322. Exodus 20

  323. tells us

  324. what was

  325. written.

  326. It starts

  327. out by

  328. saying

  329. I am

  330. the Lord

  331. your God

  332. who brought

  333. you out

  334. of Egypt.

  335. Here I am.

  336. I am the

  337. God who

  338. loves you.

  339. The faithful

  340. God who

  341. does not

  342. forget his

  343. promises.

  344. I rescued

  345. you.

  346. I am

  347. faithful to

  348. you.

  349. And then we

  350. read down

  351. through the

  352. commandments.

  353. The first

  354. one,

  355. you shall

  356. have no

  357. other gods

  358. but me.

  359. You shall

  360. not make

  361. for yourself

  362. an image

  363. or idol

  364. to replace

  365. me.

  366. I am

  367. your God.

  368. You are

  369. my people.

  370. These

  371. are the

  372. covenant

  373. promises,

  374. the contract

  375. that binds

  376. the marriage

  377. relationship

  378. together.

  379. Now

  380. history tells

  381. us that

  382. God's

  383. people,

  384. Israel,

  385. had done

  386. everything

  387. possible to

  388. break their

  389. vows.

  390. They had

  391. replaced God

  392. with other

  393. lovers.

  394. And yet

  395. despite

  396. their failure,

  397. in chapter

  398. 8 we see

  399. God moving

  400. in with

  401. his people.

  402. Not because

  403. they are

  404. faithful,

  405. but because

  406. of God's

  407. faithful love.

  408. Look at how

  409. Solomon responds,

  410. verse 15.

  411. Then he said,

  412. Praise be to

  413. the Lord,

  414. the God of

  415. Israel,

  416. who with

  417. his own

  418. hand has

  419. fulfilled what

  420. he promised

  421. with his own

  422. mouth to

  423. my father

  424. David.

  425. You see,

  426. the ark

  427. was not

  428. just a

  429. symbol of

  430. God's

  431. presence with

  432. his people,

  433. it is a

  434. written

  435. reminder of

  436. God's

  437. covenant

  438. faithfulness.

  439. God is

  440. saying to

  441. them,

  442. you may

  443. break your

  444. vows,

  445. but I

  446. will never

  447. ever break

  448. my promise

  449. to you.

  450. So

  451. first,

  452. our

  453. marriage to

  454. God is

  455. dependent

  456. on God's

  457. covenant

  458. faithfulness.

  459. It was

  460. then,

  461. and it

  462. is

  463. today.

  464. Second,

  465. our marriage

  466. to God

  467. is sustained

  468. by God's

  469. mercy.

  470. Now,

  471. God's

  472. promise to

  473. move in

  474. with his

  475. people sounds

  476. exciting,

  477. and it

  478. was,

  479. but it

  480. was no

  481. small thing

  482. for God

  483. to come

  484. and dwell

  485. and live

  486. with his

  487. people.

  488. Look at

  489. verse 29,

  490. moving on

  491. through the

  492. chapter.

  493. Solomon

  494. says,

  495. may your

  496. eyes,

  497. he's talking

  498. to God,

  499. may your

  500. eyes be

  501. open towards

  502. this temple

  503. night and

  504. day,

  505. this place

  506. of which

  507. you said,

  508. my name

  509. shall be

  510. there,

  511. so that

  512. you will

  513. hear the

  514. prayer your

  515. servant

  516. prays towards

  517. this place.

  518. Now,

  519. you probably

  520. were in your

  521. house outside,

  522. you've probably

  523. got a number

  524. somewhere on

  525. your wall,

  526. or maybe

  527. you have a

  528. name that

  529. identifies your

  530. house,

  531. it tells us

  532. who lives

  533. there.

  534. Well,

  535. it's as if

  536. God has

  537. written his

  538. name,

  539. Yahweh,

  540. on the

  541. front door

  542. of the

  543. temple.

  544. My name

  545. shall be

  546. there.

  547. God is

  548. making it

  549. abundantly

  550. clear.

  551. I live

  552. here,

  553. I dwell

  554. with these

  555. people.

  556. Now,

  557. that might

  558. seem grand

  559. and great,

  560. but it's

  561. also a big

  562. problem.

  563. You see,

  564. the covenant

  565. promises went

  566. something like

  567. this.

  568. The marriage

  569. contract was

  570. like this.

  571. God said to

  572. them,

  573. if you

  574. obey me,

  575. then I

  576. will bless

  577. you.

  578. If you

  579. keep your

  580. promises to

  581. me,

  582. then I

  583. will live

  584. with you.

  585. But if you

  586. disobey me,

  587. if you

  588. walk away

  589. from me,

  590. then I

  591. will curse

  592. you.

  593. If you

  594. fail to

  595. keep your

  596. promises,

  597. then you

  598. will be

  599. removed

  600. from me.

  601. We

  602. can't

  603. live

  604. together.

  605. And

  606. Solomon

  607. knew that.

  608. He knew

  609. that he

  610. and his

  611. people

  612. had a

  613. sin

  614. problem.

  615. So he

  616. begins

  617. to pray,

  618. verse 31.

  619. When

  620. anyone

  621. wrongs

  622. their

  623. neighbour,

  624. so if

  625. anybody

  626. does

  627. something

  628. wrong

  629. towards

  630. their

  631. neighbour,

  632. verse 32,

  633. then hear

  634. from

  635. heaven

  636. and

  637. act,

  638. verse 33,

  639. when

  640. your

  641. people

  642. Israel

  643. have

  644. been

  645. defeated

  646. by an

  647. enemy

  648. because

  649. they

  650. have

  651. sinned

  652. against

  653. you,

  654. verse 34,

  655. then hear

  656. from heaven

  657. and forgive

  658. the sin

  659. of your

  660. people,

  661. verse 35,

  662. when the

  663. heavens are

  664. shut up

  665. and there

  666. is no

  667. rain,

  668. sin,

  669. because

  670. your

  671. people

  672. have

  673. sinned

  674. against

  675. you,

  676. verse 36,

  677. then hear

  678. from heaven

  679. and forgive

  680. the sin

  681. of your

  682. servants,

  683. your

  684. people

  685. Israel.

  686. Not

  687. if we

  688. sin,

  689. but when

  690. we sin.

  691. Solomon's

  692. honesty

  693. only reveals

  694. the depth

  695. of the

  696. problem.

  697. God

  698. moving in

  699. with his

  700. people was

  701. filled

  702. with tension.

  703. To have

  704. the presence

  705. of God

  706. amongst

  707. them

  708. was

  709. both

  710. glorious

  711. and

  712. fearful.

  713. All at

  714. the same

  715. time,

  716. it was a

  717. joyful

  718. experience,

  719. but it

  720. was also

  721. terrifying.

  722. They knew

  723. that if

  724. they broke

  725. their

  726. promises,

  727. it would

  728. mean they

  729. would face

  730. God's

  731. judgment.

  732. God

  733. would banish

  734. his people.

  735. They could

  736. no longer

  737. enjoy his

  738. presence.

  739. You see,

  740. if they

  741. were to

  742. enjoy the

  743. intimacy

  744. of God,

  745. if they

  746. were to

  747. experience

  748. God's

  749. faithful

  750. love,

  751. it would

  752. require the

  753. mercy of

  754. God.

  755. And here

  756. we see

  757. the beauty

  758. of God's

  759. mercy.

  760. Look at

  761. verse 46.

  762. Just jump

  763. on a little

  764. bit.

  765. Verse 46.

  766. Again,

  767. Solomon is

  768. still talking

  769. to God.

  770. when they

  771. sin against

  772. you.

  773. For there

  774. is no one

  775. who does

  776. not sin.

  777. And you

  778. become angry

  779. with them

  780. and give

  781. them over

  782. to their

  783. enemies,

  784. who take

  785. them captive

  786. to their

  787. own lands

  788. far away

  789. or near.

  790. Well,

  791. we know

  792. the story,

  793. don't we?

  794. That's

  795. tragically

  796. what happened.

  797. The story,

  798. the whole

  799. story of

  800. 1 Kings

  801. is a

  802. slow

  803. decline

  804. of

  805. increasing

  806. unfaithfulness.

  807. And God

  808. did what

  809. he promised.

  810. 300 years

  811. after Solomon

  812. came the

  813. Babylonians.

  814. They came

  815. in,

  816. marched

  817. in,

  818. destroyed

  819. the temple,

  820. destroyed

  821. the ark.

  822. God's

  823. presence

  824. gone

  825. and God's

  826. people

  827. carried off

  828. into exile.

  829. The marriage

  830. relationship

  831. in tatters.

  832. You see,

  833. if they were

  834. to enjoy

  835. God's

  836. intimacy,

  837. mercy,

  838. it would

  839. require

  840. God's

  841. mercy.

  842. So Solomon

  843. continues to

  844. pray,

  845. verse 47,

  846. and if

  847. they have

  848. a change

  849. of heart

  850. in the

  851. land

  852. where they

  853. are held

  854. captive

  855. and repent

  856. and plead

  857. with you

  858. in the

  859. land of

  860. their

  861. captors

  862. and say,

  863. we have

  864. sinned,

  865. we have

  866. done wrong,

  867. we have

  868. acted

  869. wickedly,

  870. and if

  871. they turn

  872. back to you

  873. with all

  874. their heart

  875. and soul

  876. in their

  877. land of

  878. their enemies

  879. who took

  880. them captive

  881. and pray

  882. to you

  883. towards the

  884. land you

  885. gave their

  886. ancestors,

  887. towards the

  888. city you

  889. have chosen

  890. and the

  891. temple I

  892. have built

  893. for your

  894. name,

  895. then from

  896. heaven,

  897. your dwelling

  898. place,

  899. hear their

  900. prayer and

  901. their plea

  902. and uphold

  903. their cause.

  904. Now it's

  905. interesting to

  906. note that

  907. the first

  908. people to

  909. have read

  910. the book

  911. of first

  912. kings,

  913. would have

  914. been those

  915. very first

  916. people who

  917. had been

  918. carried off

  919. into exile.

  920. So you

  921. can imagine

  922. the marriage

  923. relationship is

  924. in tatters,

  925. the temple

  926. has been

  927. destroyed,

  928. the ark

  929. is gone,

  930. the very

  931. symbols of

  932. God's

  933. presence,

  934. and here

  935. they are

  936. in a

  937. different

  938. place,

  939. and they

  940. remember,

  941. they

  942. remember,

  943. if they

  944. are to

  945. enjoy

  946. God's

  947. intimacy,

  948. it requires

  949. God's

  950. mercy.

  951. And so

  952. they cry

  953. out,

  954. verse 50,

  955. and God

  956. forgive your

  957. people who

  958. have sinned

  959. against you,

  960. forgive all

  961. the offences

  962. they have

  963. committed against

  964. you,

  965. forgive us.

  966. You see,

  967. under the

  968. old covenant,

  969. God's people

  970. could never

  971. fully and

  972. enjoy the

  973. blessings of

  974. God.

  975. Their

  976. failure,

  977. their broken

  978. promises,

  979. their wandering

  980. lustful hearts

  981. meant they

  982. were constantly

  983. removed from

  984. God's

  985. presence.

  986. Yes,

  987. God was

  988. merciful,

  989. yes,

  990. he would

  991. take them

  992. back,

  993. yes,

  994. God was

  995. so forgiving

  996. he would

  997. dwell with

  998. them,

  999. but their

  1000. sin meant

  1001. it never

  1002. lasted and

  1003. it was

  1004. never

  1005. enjoyed.

  1006. It was a

  1007. relationship

  1008. whereby they

  1009. were kind

  1010. of in,

  1011. out,

  1012. in,

  1013. out.

  1014. They never

  1015. enjoyed God's

  1016. love.

  1017. And that's

  1018. why God

  1019. had promised

  1020. a new

  1021. covenant.

  1022. Look at

  1023. this from

  1024. Hebrews 8.

  1025. For if

  1026. there had

  1027. been nothing

  1028. wrong with

  1029. that first

  1030. covenant,

  1031. no place

  1032. would have

  1033. been sought

  1034. for another.

  1035. But God

  1036. found fault

  1037. with the

  1038. people and

  1039. said,

  1040. the days

  1041. are coming,

  1042. declares the

  1043. Lord,

  1044. when I

  1045. will make

  1046. a new

  1047. covenant.

  1048. For I

  1049. will forgive

  1050. their wickedness

  1051. and will

  1052. remember their

  1053. sins no

  1054. more.

  1055. By calling

  1056. this covenant

  1057. new,

  1058. he has made

  1059. the first

  1060. one

  1061. obsolete.

  1062. need.

  1063. So God

  1064. had to

  1065. bring about

  1066. a new

  1067. covenant,

  1068. a new

  1069. contract,

  1070. because they

  1071. couldn't keep

  1072. their promises.

  1073. If they were

  1074. to enjoy God's

  1075. intimacy,

  1076. it needed

  1077. something new,

  1078. something better.

  1079. You see,

  1080. the ark of the

  1081. old covenant

  1082. has now been

  1083. replaced.

  1084. Look,

  1085. we can see it

  1086. here before us

  1087. this morning,

  1088. with the

  1089. table of

  1090. the new

  1091. covenant.

  1092. You see,

  1093. every time we

  1094. eat of this

  1095. bread and

  1096. drink of

  1097. this juice,

  1098. we are

  1099. reminded of

  1100. God's

  1101. presence with

  1102. us.

  1103. But not

  1104. just his

  1105. presence,

  1106. God's

  1107. faithful,

  1108. committed

  1109. and loyal

  1110. love.

  1111. How?

  1112. Well,

  1113. because the

  1114. bread and

  1115. the juice

  1116. speak of

  1117. Christ's

  1118. death for

  1119. us.

  1120. Jesus,

  1121. the God-man

  1122. who came

  1123. to stand

  1124. in for us,

  1125. to represent

  1126. us fully

  1127. and completely

  1128. before God,

  1129. and as

  1130. Christ came,

  1131. he took

  1132. the blame

  1133. for all

  1134. of my

  1135. unfaithfulness,

  1136. all my

  1137. wandering,

  1138. lustful

  1139. wanderings

  1140. from God,

  1141. all of my

  1142. sin.

  1143. He takes

  1144. the blame.

  1145. But not

  1146. only that,

  1147. but Christ

  1148. lives the

  1149. perfect life

  1150. for me,

  1151. and fulfills

  1152. and keeps

  1153. the vows

  1154. of obedience

  1155. that I

  1156. could never

  1157. keep.

  1158. He does

  1159. it all

  1160. for me

  1161. and for

  1162. you so

  1163. that I

  1164. can enjoy

  1165. God's

  1166. presence

  1167. forever.

  1168. And this

  1169. new covenant

  1170. is so

  1171. great that

  1172. even when

  1173. I sin,

  1174. not if

  1175. I sin,

  1176. but when

  1177. I sin,

  1178. God will

  1179. never

  1180. remove

  1181. himself

  1182. from me

  1183. and I

  1184. will never

  1185. be removed

  1186. from him.

  1187. Why?

  1188. Because

  1189. Christ has

  1190. taken my

  1191. unfaithfulness

  1192. and he

  1193. has kept

  1194. the vows

  1195. of obedience

  1196. for me.

  1197. Here

  1198. we have

  1199. a marriage

  1200. that is

  1201. dependent

  1202. not on

  1203. my faithfulness

  1204. or your

  1205. faithfulness

  1206. or your

  1207. ability

  1208. or the

  1209. strength

  1210. of your

  1211. love,

  1212. but on

  1213. God's

  1214. absolute

  1215. loyal

  1216. and enduring

  1217. faithful

  1218. love to

  1219. you and

  1220. to me.

  1221. You see,

  1222. if we are

  1223. to enjoy

  1224. God's

  1225. intimacy,

  1226. it requires

  1227. God's

  1228. mercy.

  1229. And the

  1230. table reminds

  1231. us to look

  1232. again to

  1233. Christ on

  1234. the cross

  1235. where

  1236. mercy

  1237. continues

  1238. to flow

  1239. with arms

  1240. outstretched

  1241. so the

  1242. flood of

  1243. mercy comes

  1244. to God's

  1245. people.

  1246. So second,

  1247. our marriage

  1248. to God

  1249. is sustained

  1250. by God's

  1251. mercy.

  1252. Third,

  1253. our marriage

  1254. to God

  1255. is nourished

  1256. by prayerful

  1257. dependence.

  1258. Turn over

  1259. to,

  1260. where are

  1261. we,

  1262. verse 56.

  1263. Our

  1264. marriage

  1265. to God

  1266. is nourished

  1267. by prayerful

  1268. dependence.

  1269. Solomon knew

  1270. that if

  1271. their

  1272. relationship

  1273. to God

  1274. was to

  1275. be enjoyed,

  1276. if it

  1277. was to

  1278. go on

  1279. in the

  1280. right way,

  1281. well then

  1282. it depended

  1283. on prayer.

  1284. And here

  1285. we have

  1286. like a

  1287. marriage

  1288. prayer,

  1289. and I

  1290. want to

  1291. commend

  1292. this to

  1293. you as

  1294. a prayer

  1295. that we

  1296. can pray

  1297. ourselves

  1298. in our

  1299. marriage

  1300. relationship

  1301. with God.

  1302. I'm just

  1303. going to

  1304. read it

  1305. just very

  1306. quickly and

  1307. just make

  1308. some comments

  1309. as we

  1310. go along.

  1311. There's

  1312. really five

  1313. parts to

  1314. this prayer

  1315. that we

  1316. can pray

  1317. in our

  1318. marriage

  1319. relationship

  1320. to God.

  1321. First,

  1322. praise him

  1323. for his

  1324. faithfulness.

  1325. Look at

  1326. verse 56.

  1327. Praise be

  1328. to the

  1329. Lord who

  1330. has given

  1331. rest to

  1332. his people

  1333. Israel,

  1334. just as

  1335. he promised.

  1336. Not one

  1337. word has

  1338. failed of

  1339. all the

  1340. good promises

  1341. he has

  1342. given to

  1343. us.

  1344. How true

  1345. is that?

  1346. Not one

  1347. word has

  1348. failed.

  1349. God is

  1350. faithful and

  1351. loyal.

  1352. Praise him

  1353. for it.

  1354. Verse 57.

  1355. A desire

  1356. and a

  1357. longing to

  1358. experience

  1359. God's

  1360. presence.

  1361. Verse 57.

  1362. May the

  1363. Lord our

  1364. God be

  1365. with us

  1366. as he

  1367. was with

  1368. our

  1369. ancestors.

  1370. May he

  1371. never

  1372. leave us

  1373. nor forsake

  1374. us.

  1375. In Christ

  1376. he is

  1377. never

  1378. going to

  1379. leave us

  1380. and so

  1381. we pray

  1382. that we

  1383. may experience

  1384. that more

  1385. and more.

  1386. Third,

  1387. there's a

  1388. longing for

  1389. deep change

  1390. in our

  1391. own lives.

  1392. Verse 58.

  1393. May he

  1394. turn our

  1395. hearts to

  1396. him to

  1397. walk in

  1398. obedience to

  1399. him and

  1400. keep the

  1401. commands,

  1402. the decrees

  1403. and laws

  1404. that he

  1405. gave our

  1406. ancestors.

  1407. That longing

  1408. that God

  1409. would change

  1410. our hearts

  1411. in such a

  1412. way that

  1413. we love

  1414. to obey

  1415. him.

  1416. Fourth,

  1417. we pray

  1418. for provision

  1419. in our

  1420. relationship

  1421. with him.

  1422. Verse 59.

  1423. And may

  1424. these words

  1425. of mine

  1426. which I

  1427. have prayed

  1428. before the

  1429. Lord be

  1430. near to

  1431. the Lord

  1432. our God

  1433. day and

  1434. night,

  1435. that he

  1436. may uphold

  1437. the cause

  1438. of his

  1439. servants

  1440. and the

  1441. cause of

  1442. his people

  1443. according

  1444. to each

  1445. day's

  1446. needs.

  1447. We can

  1448. pray to

  1449. our

  1450. faithful

  1451. God

  1452. who will

  1453. provide

  1454. all that

  1455. we need

  1456. in our

  1457. relationship

  1458. with him.

  1459. And we

  1460. pray all

  1461. these things

  1462. for his

  1463. glory.

  1464. Verse 60.

  1465. So that

  1466. all the

  1467. peoples of

  1468. the earth

  1469. may know

  1470. that the

  1471. Lord is

  1472. God and

  1473. that there

  1474. is no

  1475. other.

  1476. What a

  1477. great prayer.

  1478. I just

  1479. simply commend

  1480. that to

  1481. you.

  1482. Work through

  1483. that prayer

  1484. yourself this

  1485. week as a

  1486. way to

  1487. pray our

  1488. relationship

  1489. to God.

  1490. So that's

  1491. how we pray.

  1492. Why do we

  1493. pray?

  1494. Well Solomon

  1495. knew we need

  1496. to pray.

  1497. Not to

  1498. earn favour

  1499. from God

  1500. but because

  1501. without God

  1502. we have

  1503. nothing and

  1504. are nothing.

  1505. You see

  1506. through our

  1507. prayer we

  1508. are admitting

  1509. our complete

  1510. and utter

  1511. weakness.

  1512. It is a

  1513. dependency

  1514. upon God.

  1515. One summer

  1516. when I was

  1517. young our

  1518. neighbours

  1519. were away

  1520. on holiday

  1521. and they

  1522. asked me

  1523. if I would

  1524. water their

  1525. garden for

  1526. them.

  1527. They were

  1528. away for

  1529. two weeks.

  1530. Well I

  1531. completely

  1532. forgot to

  1533. do any

  1534. watering at

  1535. all until

  1536. the day

  1537. before they

  1538. were due

  1539. home.

  1540. And of

  1541. course panic

  1542. the garden

  1543. was wilting

  1544. everything was

  1545. dying so I

  1546. turned on the

  1547. hose early in

  1548. the morning and

  1549. what did I do?

  1550. I forgot to

  1551. turn it off.

  1552. So the place

  1553. was flooded.

  1554. I mean the

  1555. water was kind

  1556. of coming up

  1557. to the side

  1558. of the window.

  1559. It was really

  1560. really bad.

  1561. Well the

  1562. flowers soaked

  1563. it up and

  1564. they began to

  1565. flourish and

  1566. they said you

  1567. did an awful

  1568. lot of watering

  1569. when you were

  1570. away.

  1571. Well the

  1572. point is very

  1573. simple.

  1574. Prayer is

  1575. like that.

  1576. When we

  1577. pray or if

  1578. we forget to

  1579. pray it's

  1580. like having

  1581. the tap

  1582. turned off.

  1583. But when

  1584. we pray it's

  1585. like the tap

  1586. being turned

  1587. on.

  1588. All that we

  1589. need from

  1590. God is given

  1591. to us so

  1592. that the

  1593. marriage

  1594. relationship can

  1595. be nourished

  1596. so that it

  1597. can flourish

  1598. into everything

  1599. that it is

  1600. meant to

  1601. be.

  1602. So don't

  1603. look at

  1604. prayer as

  1605. something to

  1606. do to

  1607. earn God's

  1608. favour and

  1609. if I pray

  1610. ten times a

  1611. day God is

  1612. going to

  1613. bless me.

  1614. No through

  1615. prayer we are

  1616. depending so

  1617. we can

  1618. nourish.

  1619. We can

  1620. turn on the

  1621. taps and

  1622. let our

  1623. lives be

  1624. flooded with

  1625. all that we

  1626. need to

  1627. nourish our

  1628. relationship

  1629. with him.

  1630. then lastly

  1631. our marriage

  1632. to God

  1633. is enjoyed

  1634. through joyful

  1635. worship.

  1636. Every wedding

  1637. that I've been

  1638. to and I'm

  1639. sure it's the

  1640. same with you

  1641. when all the

  1642. vows and

  1643. promises have

  1644. been made

  1645. there's a

  1646. feast,

  1647. there's a

  1648. party,

  1649. everyone

  1650. celebrates the

  1651. marriage union

  1652. and that's

  1653. what Solomon

  1654. and all the

  1655. people do

  1656. when God

  1657. moves in

  1658. as the

  1659. marriage as

  1660. it like

  1661. begins

  1662. they throw

  1663. a party.

  1664. Look at

  1665. verse 63.

  1666. Solomon

  1667. offered a

  1668. sacrifice of

  1669. fellowship

  1670. offerings to

  1671. the Lord.

  1672. 22,000

  1673. cattle.

  1674. Wow!

  1675. And 120,000

  1676. sheep and

  1677. goats.

  1678. So the

  1679. king and

  1680. all the

  1681. Israelites

  1682. dedicated the

  1683. temple of

  1684. the Lord.

  1685. talk about

  1686. a meat

  1687. feast.

  1688. No veggie

  1689. burgers here.

  1690. What a

  1691. party!

  1692. And look at

  1693. all the

  1694. people!

  1695. Verse 65.

  1696. So Solomon

  1697. observed the

  1698. festival at

  1699. the time and

  1700. all Israel

  1701. with him.

  1702. A vast

  1703. assembly of

  1704. people from

  1705. Lebo,

  1706. Hamas,

  1707. way up into

  1708. the north,

  1709. to the

  1710. wadi of

  1711. Egypt,

  1712. right down

  1713. in the

  1714. south.

  1715. There were

  1716. people from

  1717. all over

  1718. the kingdom

  1719. coming together

  1720. for this

  1721. great

  1722. celebration.

  1723. middle of

  1724. verse 65,

  1725. they celebrated

  1726. it before

  1727. the Lord

  1728. our God

  1729. for seven

  1730. days,

  1731. and that

  1732. wasn't

  1733. enough.

  1734. So for

  1735. seven more

  1736. days,

  1737. 14 days

  1738. of all,

  1739. of eating

  1740. and drinking

  1741. and feasting,

  1742. what a

  1743. joyful

  1744. celebration.

  1745. And look

  1746. at the

  1747. response of

  1748. the people.

  1749. Verse 66,

  1750. on the

  1751. following day

  1752. he sent

  1753. the people

  1754. away,

  1755. they blessed

  1756. the king,

  1757. and they

  1758. went home

  1759. joyful and

  1760. glad in

  1761. heart for

  1762. all the

  1763. good things

  1764. the Lord

  1765. had done

  1766. for his

  1767. servant David

  1768. and his

  1769. people Israel.

  1770. Now let me

  1771. ask us this,

  1772. how much

  1773. more can

  1774. we be

  1775. joyful and

  1776. glad in

  1777. heart for

  1778. all the

  1779. good things

  1780. the Lord

  1781. has done

  1782. for us?

  1783. How much

  1784. more can

  1785. we celebrate?

  1786. God has

  1787. been faithful

  1788. to his

  1789. promise.

  1790. He has

  1791. sent his

  1792. son who

  1793. died our

  1794. death and

  1795. who keeps

  1796. the vows

  1797. for us so

  1798. that we can

  1799. enjoy his

  1800. presence without

  1801. fear.

  1802. We can call

  1803. him father.

  1804. We can run

  1805. to him as

  1806. children and

  1807. know his

  1808. embrace and

  1809. he will never

  1810. turn us away

  1811. no matter

  1812. our sin.

  1813. And we

  1814. can rest.

  1815. There is no

  1816. more work to

  1817. be done

  1818. because Christ

  1819. has completed

  1820. and finished

  1821. it all.

  1822. We are to

  1823. celebrate

  1824. and to

  1825. enjoy our

  1826. relationship

  1827. with God.

  1828. Here is a

  1829. God whose

  1830. mercy covers

  1831. all our

  1832. sin and

  1833. who keeps

  1834. his covenant

  1835. of love.

  1836. And in a

  1837. moment we

  1838. are going to

  1839. celebrate.

  1840. We are going

  1841. to have a

  1842. feast.

  1843. A feast

  1844. that is a

  1845. forte.

  1846. feast.

  1847. An appetizer

  1848. of the

  1849. ultimate feast

  1850. to come.

  1851. Of that

  1852. wedding feast

  1853. when we

  1854. will be

  1855. with the

  1856. Lord Jesus

  1857. and we

  1858. will reign

  1859. with him

  1860. forever and

  1861. ever and

  1862. ever.

  1863. God's

  1864. covenant

  1865. faithful love.

  1866. Do you

  1867. know it?

  1868. Have you

  1869. experienced

  1870. it?

  1871. Can you

  1872. rest and

  1873. enjoy in

  1874. all that

  1875. he has done

  1876. for us?

  1877. Let's

  1878. pray.

  1879. Fro här

  1880. theme

  1881. who

  1882. have

  1883. here

  1884. to join

  1885. them.

  1886. patience

  1887. you
