  1. Morning everyone. Most people make an absolute hames of it on the first try, so fair play to you.

  2. So, not too bad. So some of you know me. My name is Dan O'Stayes and I'm from the Middleton Baptist

  3. Church. I always love coming to Carragoline. It's always a privilege to come here. The first thing

  4. I hear when I come inside the door is the sound of children running around. And any church where

  5. you hear the sound of children running around, that's a healthy church. And I think we all pray

  6. that the next generation, not just here in Carragoline but in Middleton and all the other

  7. churches where the truth is faithfully proclaimed, would rise, that we would see these children grow

  8. and embrace the Lord, call out to him just like we did. So that's a fervent prayer for all of us.

  9. I'm especially glad to be here this morning because the first thing that was pointed out to me was I

  10. wasn't going to have to get up on that stage and to preach to you this morning. I'm happy standing

  11. behind here. And I'm not just happy to be here because it means I have an excuse to stop in Gloria

  12. Jeans and Douglas on the way home. But I've probably been thinking about that more than is spiritually

  13. acceptable for a man who's been charged with preaching the word to you this morning. But being

  14. a parent of a three and a half year old and a 15 month old, I was up at four o'clock this morning,

  15. so I will be stopping at Gloria Jeans. So in the words of Luther, here I stand, I can do no other.

  16. So let's pray this morning before we go to the word. Heavenly Father, thank you for this fellowship

  17. of believers here in Carragalline who love one another. Thank you for the love and the sharing

  18. of your faith that is so evident when I visit this place, Lord. And again, Lord, thank you especially

  19. for the children of this church. May this church, just like my own and every church that proclaims your

  20. name, Lord. May we never be places where we view children as an inconvenience or as an extra, but

  21. may we view them as you view them, as precious and made in your holy image. With them, Lord, with

  22. everybody else in this church, may we edify and encourage one another today. And as I dare to teach

  23. from your word this morning, Lord, I pray that your spirit would be at work. May not my words be spoken,

  24. but may your words be lifted up and imprinted in the minds of your people. So calm our thoughts,

  25. still our minds, and blot out any distractions that we bring in this morning, Lord. And help us

  26. just to focus on who you are, the God of grace, the God of love, and the God of mercy. In Jesus' name,

  27. Amen. If you'd like to turn with me to Ephesians chapter 2,

    Ephesians 2 chapter mention

  28. I'm going to look at a familiar portion of scripture this morning. Ephesians chapter 2,

    Ephesians 2 chapter mention

  29. starting at verse 1 and going to verse 10. So Ephesians 2 verses 1 to 10.

    Ephesians 2:1–10

  30. The apostle Paul writes to the church in Ephesus,

  31. As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins,

  32. in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world,

  33. and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient.

  34. All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our sinful nature,

  35. and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature objects of wrath.

  36. But because of his great love for us, God, who was rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ,

  37. even when we were dead in transgressions. It is by grace you have been saved. And God raised us up

  38. with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, in order that in the coming

  39. ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ

  40. Jesus. For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith, and this not from yourselves.

  41. It is the gift of God, not by work so that no one can boast. For we are God's workmanship,

  42. created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. Amen.

  43. One of the greatest advocates for the Christian faith that this island has ever produced is a man by the

  44. name of C.S. Lewis. Many of you know that name. Many of you perhaps read some of his books. His series,

  45. The Chronicles of Narnia, is still one of the all-time selling series of all time. His most famous

  46. non-fiction book, Mere Christianity, remains a must-read book for anybody who wants to be able to answer

  47. objections that the world has to Christianity. If you haven't read it, I strongly recommend you go and read it.

  48. C.S. Lewis was a professor in Oxford, and one day he became involved in a discussion about religion.

  49. And the discussion turned to what made the Christian faith so unique compared to the religions of the

  50. world. Well, the incarnation of Jesus was suggested, but then other religions have different versions of

  51. their own gods that have appeared in human form, so that's not it. And likewise, the resurrection of

  52. Jesus was put forward. But this too was rejected because other religions have circumstances of

  53. resurrection at their heart. So what exactly is it that makes Christianity unique? What is it that

  54. you can point to in Christianity that says, that captures Christianity, that's what the basis of it is?

  55. Finally, C.S. Lewis piped up. Gentlemen, he said, there were no ladies present, sorry ladies,

  56. I'm just quoting verbatim. He said, gentlemen, the answer is a simple one. Grace. Grace.

  57. Grace. Undeserved favor. God's merciful love. This, Lewis said, is what makes Christianity so unique.

  58. And I think he's right, because you see, every other religion, I use that word just loosely,

  59. religion on the planet, requires you to make some kind of an effort to get yourself right with God.

  60. You hear things like this. Go to mass every Sunday. Fast during Ramadan. Keep your kitchen kosher.

  61. Pray the rosary once a day. If you're my grandfather, it was more like 100 times a day.

  62. Go to confession. Don't take communion if you sin that day. And just try harder. And maybe you'll earn

  63. your way to heaven. Those are some of the things the religions of the world say you have to do.

  64. In other words, it's all about you. You have to roll up your sleeves, put your shoulder to the wheel,

  65. make every effort to get yourself right with God. Because if you work hard enough, then maybe,

  66. just maybe, God will accept you. You have the power and the capacity, religion tells you, to please God.

  67. But what does the Bible say? When the Bible talks about grace, what does it mean?

  68. A part of our text today, it's one of the most famous quotations in all of the Bible.

  69. It is by grace you have been saved. But saved from what? Saved for what?

  70. Why is it that grace makes us right in God's eyes? Why does it have to be grace? What does grace look like?

  71. Well, this morning, we're going to cover some old ground because it's fairly foundational,

  72. but we're going to try and find the answers to these questions, and maybe others that we have about

  73. our salvation. So I've entitled today's sermon, God's grace for God's glory. And the text before us

  74. tells us that your salvation and my salvation is entirely independent of any work that we do.

  75. It's entirely separate from your deeds or my deeds. It's entirely a work of God for his purposes

  76. and for his glory. If you want to take notes, if you're that kind of person like I am,

  77. surprise I'm not taking notes right now as I'm talking, but anyway, if you want to take notes,

  78. we'll be having a look at three different things in this text. The first one is the problem,

  79. the problem of man's condition. The second one is the prescription, the prescription of Christ's

  80. sacrifice. And thirdly, we'll be looking lastly at the purpose, the purpose of God's grace. So the

  81. problem, the prescription, and the purpose. I'll explain each of those as we go along, but for now,

  82. let's just dive into the text and let's see what the word of God has to teach us. So verses one and

  83. two. As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins in which you used to live when you

  84. followed the ways of this world and the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at

  85. work in those who are disobedient. So we know already from chapter one, right, that Paul is writing to

  86. the local church in Ephesus, to people who are believers in Jesus Christ. So what does he have to

  87. say? What's relevant to them is relevant to us. Well, this is the first point in today's sermon,

  88. the problem of man's condition. He starts off with a fairly startling, alarming kind of statement.

  89. You were dead. It's fairly strong stuff, isn't it? You see, growing up, my family business was a

  90. funeral home. So I've seen my fair share of death. Death isn't something that you generally think of

  91. as something positive. It's not something you, it's not a word you use or an image you invoke

  92. to describe anything positive. No matter what culture you're from or what language you speak,

  93. I think we all react to death in the same way. Well, that's what Paul says the readers of this

  94. letter were like. Dead. He doesn't mean that literally. He's using an image or an analogy

  95. because he says they were dead in their transgressions and sins.

  96. Have you ever heard anyone say that people are basically good? I think I hear that all the time.

  97. There's this idea that when push comes to shove, humans generally will do the right thing because

  98. humans are programmed to think righteousness is a virtue. And I think I know what people mean

  99. when they say that. I think you know what they mean when they say that. Because people are capable

  100. of good things. I've seen the kindness of strangers just as you have. I've seen people perform acts of

  101. love and charity. But it doesn't seem to gel with what Paul is writing here. What he says here,

  102. he's not so much commenting on the actions of a person. He's commenting on the nature of mankind.

  103. So when he says you were dead, he's talking to the Christian about his state of being before he

  104. became a Christian. You were in the past tense. It sounds a bit harsh, doesn't it? Paul doesn't just

  105. say you were sinful. He doesn't just kind of leave it there. It's an interesting word, sin. In both

  106. Hebrew and Greek, and I promise this is the only time I'm going to mention Hebrew or Greek today, so

  107. we'll just get it out of the way now. But in both Hebrew and Greek, literally sin means to miss the mark,

  108. like to aim at something and to miss the target. I looked this up. Apparently there's 1,189 chapters

  109. in the Bible. And out of all of those, four of them don't mention sin. Genesis 1 and 2 and Revelation

  110. 21 and 22. The very beginning of history and the very end of history. The creation of the universe

  111. and the final reign of Jesus Christ over the universe. In other words, the history of man is defined by

  112. this thing that we call sin. So when Paul says you were dead in sin, he's saying that before you

  113. became a believer, you were in such a condition of missing the mark. I was in such a condition of

  114. missing the mark. It was completely impossible for me to hit the target. And the target, as is made clear

  115. all throughout the Bible, is being justified before God. Is being viewed in God's eyes as righteous,

  116. as worthy to live with him forever. Let me just give you a few other verses. Feel free to jot them

  117. down if you want. Kind of proves the same point. Romans 3, 23. All have sinned and fall short of the

  118. glory of God. Psalm 14, 3. All have turned aside. They have together become corrupt. There is no one

  119. who does good, not even one. Isaiah 53, 6. All we like sheep have gone astray. We have turned everyone

  120. to his own way. And perhaps most tellingly, the words of Jesus himself, Mark 10, 18. Why do you call me good?

  121. No one is good except God and God alone. Now don't get me wrong and don't get Paul wrong. Humans can do

  122. great things. Humans can build hospitals. They can shelter homeless people. They can feed the hungry,

  123. cure diseases. But friends, none of that makes us right in God's eyes. Because a holy God sees our

  124. condition for what it really is. Sinners. Nothing that we do is good enough to shake off

  125. that shackle of sin that chains us forever. Paul continues this argument in verse 2. He says

  126. that's how we used to live when we followed, as he says, the ways of this world and of the ruler of

  127. the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work, and those who are disobedient. So Paul is doing

  128. a bit of theological mining here. So he's cracked through the surface at verse 1, and now he's drilling

  129. down into the stream. He's identified the reason why the unconverted sinner is, as he says, dead in sin.

  130. The reason is this. Man by nature follows the ways of this world. And if it's ruler, Satan, we know who

  131. that is. We already know the world system is satanic, don't we? 1 John 2 says this. Love not the world,

  132. neither of the things that are in the world. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, the lust

  133. of the eyes, and the pride of life are not from the Father. They're from the world. Jesus himself

  134. called Satan in John 12, 31, the ruler of this world. And he rebuked the religious leaders of the

  135. day for serving their father, Satan. And Paul himself, he called Satan the god of this age,

  136. or the god of this world. And in 2 Corinthians 4, 4, he went so far as to say this, that Satan has

  137. blinded the minds of unbelievers so they cannot see the light of the gospel that displays the glory

  138. of Christ. In verse 3, Paul includes himself here. He, a zealously religious Jew, a Hebrew of the Hebrew,

  139. Pharisee of the Pharisees, descendant of Abraham from the tribe of Benjamin, circumcised on the eighth day

  140. in accordance with the law of Moses, was blind to the glory of God and his salvation because of the

  141. cravings of his flesh. He lived to gratify the cravings of his flesh. Even as one of the most

  142. religious people described in the Bible, he was dead in sin. And just look at the last words of verse 3.

  143. Like all unbelievers, Paul admits this. He was by nature an object of wrath. You see, that's the

  144. problem of man's condition, friends. There's nothing here that says man is basically good. There's nothing

  145. here that says, well, man just kind of needs some gentle corrective action and he's kind of capable

  146. of getting himself back in the right track. You just need to encourage man to live a life that's

  147. holier or more righteous. There's no exhortation to live a better life or maybe to look like you're

  148. living a better life. In other words, there's nothing here that suggests you can in any way make

  149. yourself acceptable to God. Do you think it? Do you think that there's anything you can do? Or do I think

  150. there's anything I can do to make Dan from Middleton acceptable in God's eyes? Do I think that if I just

  151. try harder, if I make that bit of an extra effort every day to stop swearing or to stop losing my temper or

  152. stop whatever it is that I'm particularly good at sinning at, do you think if I just work as hard as I can,

  153. I'll get right with God? I've got news for me and I've got news for you. It'll never work.

  154. No matter how hard you try, no matter how hard I try to clean up my act, if I, in my state of

  155. unconvertedness, that's a word, isn't it Ralph? We'll go with that, unconvertedness. In that state of being an

  156. unconverted sinner, I will never measure up to God's standard of righteousness.

  157. James 2.10 says, if you break one part of God's law, you're guilty. It's like saying to a cop who pulls you

  158. over, look, I know I was speeding officer, but I haven't been drinking. I didn't knock anyone down. And I stopped at

  159. every red light on the way here. Well, guess what? You still sped. You still broke the law. You're guilty.

  160. That's us, friend. If we break one part of the law, we're guilty. Paul Washer, who's an American

  161. preacher, some of you might be familiar with him, he does walk-up evangelism to people on the street.

  162. And he likes to start off by saying this, do you know what the biggest problem in the Bible is?

  163. His answer shocks people. He says, the biggest problem in the Bible is that God is good.

  164. That's the biggest problem in the Bible. Because the second biggest problem in the Bible is that you are not.

  165. So how do we reconcile these two things? We have a perfect, holy, good, righteous God with a sinner

  166. who is dead in transgression and sin and incapable of measuring up to God's standard.

  167. See, when God's standard, friends, God's standard for righteousness is perfection because he, by definition,

  168. is a perfect God. When sin entered the world with the fall of man in Genesis 3, that standard was made

  169. impossible to reach by the best efforts of you and me. And not just that, but in verse 3, because of

  170. man's innateful sinness, we deserve punishment. I read an article in the paper this week about a man who

  171. received a suspended sentence for molesting two children. He abused two little girls and he'll

  172. never see the inside of a prison. Maybe you're as incredulous as me and you think that the man's

  173. character or his life, such as it is, or his age, that don't matter and they should just lock him up

  174. and punish him, he should be held accountable for his crime. And you know what? That's exactly God's

  175. state of mind. If you break the law, no matter the extraneous circumstances of your character,

  176. of your deeds, of your seemingly external goodness, God cannot tolerate the breaking of his law

  177. because God is holy, perfect, and sinless. And because of mankind's condition, mankind deserves

  178. punishment or wrath. I'm not as posh as Alex. I say wrath, not wrath, but that's just me. Not as refined

  179. as some people are. We're powerless to do anything, to escape this wrath. We deserve this wrath, this

  180. punishment from God. I'll stop saying wrath now, Alex, I promise. So that's the first problem,

  181. our first point, the problem of man's condition. Look at verse 4. What's the first word? What is it?

  182. First word in verse 4? But, there is, just like we saw in Titus 3 earlier, it's the most joy-inducing,

  183. jubilation-causing word in the entire story of God's plan for redeeming men and women. But, you see,

  184. dead men cannot bring themselves back to life. Lazarus, dead for four days, didn't just suddenly

  185. decide to bring himself back to life and hop wrapped in bandages out of the tomb. Because Jesus did that.

  186. In the same manner, the walking dead of sinful mankind cannot give themselves new life. Something

  187. has to do that for them, doesn't it? Someone has to do that for them. Verses 4 and 5. But,

  188. I love that word. It sets the tone for everything that comes after. But, because of his great love

  189. for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ, even when we were dead in transgressions.

  190. It is by grace you have been saved. Why do you think Jesus resurrected dead people? Or Paul? Or Peter? Or Elijah?

  191. You see, those miracles, friends, they were never ends and not themselves. They were physical,

  192. visible demonstrations of God's resurrecting power. Because God brings the dead back to life.

  193. Jesus literally brought Lazarus back to life. I'm not saying it was a metaphor or anything like that.

  194. It literally happened. What I'm saying is, that is a stand-in, a symbol, or an explanation, or an illustration

  195. of God's power to bring someone back to life who is not capable of doing it themselves.

  196. And you see, everyone in the Bible who was ever brought back to life physically, Lazarus, Jairus,

  197. daughter, Tabitha, Eutychus, the son of the Shunammite woman, all of those people, they eventually died again,

  198. physically speaking. But when God brings a dead sinner back to life,

  199. that person lives forever. They are truly resurrected unto eternal life.

  200. You see, we do deserve punishment. That's inescapable. We deserve wrath. I said it again, Alex, sorry.

  201. We deserve death. We deserve hell. But God is a God of love. God is a God of mercy. God is a God of grace.

  202. Friends, even when you were dead in your sin, God loved you enough to make you alive, even when you were dead in your sin.

  203. You hadn't even done anything at this point. You were dead. There was nothing you could do.

  204. And God in his grace chose to make you alive. How did he do that? The text tells us, doesn't he?

  205. Made us alive with Christ. Christ came. Christ died. And Christ rose again.

  206. So if we're made alive in Christ, then we have died to sin and we have risen again.

  207. There's no work on our part, on your part or my part. There's no good deed we do to work our way out of spiritual death.

  208. Christ did the only good deed that could ever satisfy the, it's written down here, but I'll say anger this time, the anger of God.

  209. God demonstrates his own love for us in this, Roman 5a tells us, while we were still sinners, Christ died for us while we were still sinners.

  210. When Jesus prayed in Gethsemane, Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me.

  211. What do you think was in the cup?

  212. Do you think Jesus was afraid of what the Romans were going to do to him?

  213. Do you think he was scared of the whips, the beatings, the thorns, the nails and the cross?

  214. Do you honestly think that the second member of the Trinity, the one through whom and for whom all things that have ever been made were made,

  215. was scared of getting beaten up by a bunch of thugs?

  216. That cup, friends, was full to the brim of the anger of God against sin, of disobedience against his law.

  217. And Christ drank that cup in to the fullest on the cross so that you and I don't have to.

  218. The just punishment for sin and disobedience is the full and total extent of God's anger poured out upon you.

  219. And it was poured out completely and solely on the holy, perfect, sinless Lamb of God instead of you and me.

  220. If you want to turn to it, go to Isaiah chapter 53 or just listen if you'd like.

    Isaiah 53 chapter mention

  221. Isaiah 53 verse 4.

    Isaiah 53:4

  222. Isaiah says this, speaking the word of the Lord.

  223. Surely he took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows, yet we considered him stricken by God, smitten by him and afflicted.

  224. But he was pierced for our transgressions.

  225. He was crushed for our iniquities.

  226. The punishment that brought us peace was upon him and by his wounds we are healed.

  227. We all like sheep have gone astray.

  228. Each of us has turned to his own way and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.

  229. Verse 10, if you're reading along.

  230. Yet it was the Lord's will to crush him and cause him to suffer.

  231. And though the Lord makes his life a guilt offering, he will see his offspring and prolong his days.

  232. And the will of the Lord will prosper in his hand.

  233. Do you know who that is?

  234. Who his offspring are?

  235. That's you and me.

  236. It's us, friends.

  237. Go back to Ephesians and look at verse 6.

  238. Do you really get what that means?

  239. Christ hasn't just raised you from the dead.

  240. He has raised you and seated you with Christ.

  241. Where is Christ seated?

  242. Where is he sitting?

  243. He sits with the Father in his heavenly kingdom.

  244. The work of your salvation, friends, is not in your hands in the slightest.

  245. It was nailed into the hands of Jesus Christ on that hill 2,000 years ago.

  246. The fact that he hasn't just brought you back to life, he's seated you in heaven, means it's done.

  247. That's what he meant when he said,

  248. It is finished.

  249. Once for all.

  250. Completed.

  251. Are you starting to get a fuller appreciation of God's grace at work here?

  252. He knows you can't save yourself, friend.

  253. He knows your natural condition prevents you from making yourself right in his eyes.

  254. Just like my son Jack, he's three and a half years old.

  255. He's not capable of doing everything I want him to do.

  256. He's three and a half years old.

  257. I should have the grace to realize that.

  258. Because I have a Father in heaven who is the perfect model of the perfect Father.

  259. who understands your condition and my condition.

  260. We cannot please him by ourselves.

  261. So that's why he sent his son.

  262. For God so loved the world that he sent his only begotten son,

  263. that whomever believes in him will not die, but will live forever.

  264. He made him, who knew no sin, to be sin on our behalf,

  265. so that we would become the righteousness of God in him.

  266. That's the prescription of Christ's sacrifice.

  267. Christ died once for all, Peter writes, the just for the unjust,

  268. so that he might bring us to God, having been put to death in the flesh,

  269. but made alive in the spirit.

  270. There's nothing you do.

  271. There's no work you perform.

  272. There's no sacrifice you make except to bow your knee to Christ.

  273. Paul writes in Romans 10, verses 9 and 10,

    Romans 10:9

  274. if you confess with your mouth, Jesus is Lord,

  275. and you believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead,

  276. then you will be saved.

  277. For out of the heart, you believe unto righteousness,

  278. and from the mouth, you confess unto salvation.

  279. Are you struggling with your standing before God this morning?

  280. Are you in fear for your life?

  281. Friend, if you're in Christ, you're a new creation.

  282. With the blood of his son, God has washed away your sins

  283. and made you clean again.

  284. He's taken your sin and he's thrown it as far away

  285. as the east is from the west.

  286. He's held up his outstretched hands and declared it is finished.

  287. The great healer has filled the prescription of your condition

  288. on your behalf.

  289. So is that it?

  290. Do we just get on with our lives and twiddle our thumbs

  291. until Jesus comes back or we go to meet him?

  292. No, not at all.

  293. Verse 8.

  294. For it is by grace you have been saved,

  295. through faith, and this not from yourselves.

  296. It is the gift of God not by works,

  297. so that no one can boast.

  298. For we are God's workmanship,

  299. some translations say handiwork,

  300. created in Christ Jesus to do good works,

  301. which God prepared in advance for us to do.

  302. This is our last point.

  303. We've had the problem of man's condition,

  304. we've had the prescription of Christ's sacrifice,

  305. and now we have the purpose of God's grace.

  306. The Bible is emphatic in its proclamation that we are not saved,

  307. justified, made right in God's eyes because of anything we do.

  308. It's completely, across the board, universally emphatic.

  309. Paul re-emphasizes the point here in what we just read,

  310. but let me give you three other places to say the same thing.

  311. 1 Timothy 1.9

  312. God saved us,

  313. and called us to a holy calling,

  314. not because of our works,

  315. but because of his own purpose and grace,

  316. which he gave us in Christ Jesus,

  317. before the ages began.

  318. Romans 3.28

  319. For we hold that one is justified by faith,

  320. apart, separate, from works of the law.

  321. Galatians 2.16

  322. Yet we know a person is not justified by works of the law,

  323. but through faith in Jesus Christ.

  324. So we also have believed in Christ Jesus

  325. in order to be justified by faith,

  326. and not by works of the law,

  327. because by works of the law,

  328. no one will be justified.

  329. I could give you dozens,

  330. hundreds more verses

  331. that confirm the same thing,

  332. but Seneca's expecting me before sundown,

  333. so we'll keep moving.

  334. I'll just rest my case here.

  335. Back here in verses 8 and 9,

  336. Paul emphasizes grace

  337. is the source of our salvation.

  338. It's not anything we've done,

  339. so that no one can boast.

  340. Those of us who are from Ireland

  341. are well familiar with the term Holy Joe.

  342. It's a negative expression,

  343. in case you were wondering,

  344. if you don't know it.

  345. It's used to refer to people

  346. who are outwardly quite religious,

  347. maybe even quite sincere with their faith,

  348. but they tend to display that

  349. in a way that's arrogant or boastful.

  350. They give off the impression of themselves

  351. for being a person with whom God is happy

  352. because of all the good things they do.

  353. I tend towards having a proud personality myself,

  354. so I understand that.

  355. Speaking as a former Holy Joe,

  356. this is describing me.

  357. But those Holy Joes,

  358. those old dens,

  359. those dead dens,

  360. the holier-than-thou types,

  361. they've really got no cause to boast

  362. because we know that nothing we do

  363. improves our standing in God's eyes.

  364. We know that nothing we attempt

  365. will ever give us right standing

  366. before him.

  367. And so that's why Paul says

  368. we can't boast in anything we've done.

  369. Paul said if he was going to boast in anything,

  370. it would be the things that showed

  371. how weak he was,

  372. how much he relied on Christ.

  373. The only thing that Paul sought to boast in

  374. was the fact that he was a sinner,

  375. undeserving of mercy,

  376. and that God,

  377. in his unimaginable grace,

  378. saved him.

  379. One of my favourite hymns,

  380. Forbid it, Lord,

  381. that I should boast,

  382. save in the death of Christ my God.

  383. Paul didn't boast in anything

  384. except his death

  385. in the death of Christ.

  386. But why are we saved?

  387. We're not saved for nothing.

  388. So look at verse 10.

  389. We are God's workmanship,

  390. created in Christ Jesus

  391. to do good works,

  392. which God prepared in advance

  393. for us to do.

  394. Here's a bit of a plot twist for you.

  395. We're not saved by good works.

  396. We're saved for good works.

  397. Works is actually the most important word

  398. in this entire section.

  399. Believe it or not.

  400. Because it identifies

  401. not only the reason

  402. why you can't be saved,

  403. but the reason why God saves you.

  404. God saves us,

  405. makes us a new creation,

  406. takes out our heart of stone,

  407. gives us a heart of flesh,

  408. so that our energies

  409. and our efforts

  410. are turned away

  411. from serving ourselves

  412. and turned away

  413. from gratifying the desires

  414. of our sinful flesh.

  415. We are made into new creatures

  416. so that we can love God,

  417. we can love one another,

  418. and that we can prove it

  419. by our deeds.

  420. Our good deeds are there

  421. to prove we are followers

  422. of Jesus Christ,

  423. not to earn our way

  424. to Jesus Christ.

  425. We can't do that.

  426. They're there to demonstrate

  427. that we are disciples.

  428. Jesus said,

  429. if you love me,

  430. keep my commandments.

  431. John wrote,

  432. the one who loves the brothers

  433. loves the Lord

  434. and the sisters.

  435. Sorry, ladies.

  436. I'm old school.

  437. I got the King James

  438. stuck in my head.

  439. We're not to keep on sinning.

  440. We're to offer ourselves

  441. to God,

  442. as Paul writes in Romans 6,

  443. as those who have been brought

  444. from death to life.

  445. I think the words

  446. of the Lord himself

  447. sum it up.

  448. I'll just read it to you.

  449. John 15.

  450. I am the true vine,

  451. and my Father is the gardener.

  452. He cuts off every branch

  453. in me that bears no fruit,

  454. while every branch

  455. that does bear fruit

  456. he prunes,

  457. so that it would be

  458. even more fruitful.

  459. You are already clean

  460. because of the word

  461. I have spoken to you,

  462. so remain in me.

  463. I will remain in you.

  464. No branch can bear fruit

  465. by itself.

  466. It must remain in the vine.

  467. Neither can you bear fruit

  468. unless you remain in me.

  469. And verse 8 says,

  470. this is to my Father's glory,

  471. that you bear much fruit,

  472. showing yourselves

  473. to be my disciples.

  474. There we have it, friends.

  475. Not only are we saved

  476. entirely by the efforts of God,

  477. but we're saved entirely

  478. for the glory of God.

  479. Not for us to boast.

  480. Not for us to lord it

  481. over somebody else,

  482. as if somehow

  483. we're better than somebody

  484. because we go to church

  485. every Sunday,

  486. we got baptized,

  487. we lead a Bible study,

  488. we stack the chairs,

  489. serve the tea and coffee,

  490. whatever it is.

  491. None of that means anything,

  492. because God saved us

  493. for good works,

  494. to bring glory to himself.

  495. He does the work,

  496. he gets the credit.

  497. Does it ever annoy you

  498. at work,

  499. you do something,

  500. you work really hard

  501. at something,

  502. and then your superior

  503. ends up getting the credit for it,

  504. their name goes on the report,

  505. and they get their increment,

  506. they get their bonus,

  507. all this kind of thing.

  508. Well, I'm a civil servant,

  509. so I don't get bonuses

  510. in the first place,

  511. but nevertheless,

  512. it happens probably worse to me

  513. than it does to many of you.

  514. That annoys me.

  515. I want to be able to boast

  516. in what I do.

  517. There's nothing we can boast in,

  518. friends,

  519. because we haven't done anything.

  520. God gets to boast

  521. in his glory.

  522. Our salvation

  523. lies not

  524. in our own merit,

  525. but in the very heart

  526. and mind of God

  527. with his plan

  528. to redeem

  529. his people,

  530. his plan

  531. to make his glory visible

  532. to all

  533. who would call

  534. on his name.

  535. He laid the foundation

  536. for that plan.

  537. Think about this.

  538. He laid the foundation

  539. for that plan

  540. before he laid

  541. the foundation

  542. of the universe.

  543. He's been thinking about you

  544. for a long time,

  545. friends.

  546. This isn't something

  547. that just happened

  548. when you came in this meeting

  549. or when you decided

  550. to get baptized.

  551. God has been thinking

  552. about you

  553. since before

  554. he laid the cornerstone

  555. of the universe.

  556. There's nothing left

  557. for you to do

  558. except give him

  559. the glory.

  560. Give him the praise

  561. by serving him.

  562. With your whole self.

  563. I'm going to finish now,

  564. but there's two groups

  565. of you I want to address.

  566. If you know the Lord

  567. this morning,

  568. if you proclaim

  569. Jesus is Lord,

  570. if you believe

  571. God raised him

  572. from the dead,

  573. honour him

  574. with your words.

  575. Honour him

  576. with your thoughts.

  577. I don't know

  578. how you do that

  579. in your life

  580. because I don't know you.

  581. Only you know you.

  582. But all I can tell you

  583. is this.

  584. Take all your gifts.

  585. Take all your resources.

  586. Take your time,

  587. your energy

  588. that I don't have

  589. because I was up

  590. at four o'clock this morning

  591. with a screaming

  592. fifteen month old.

  593. But take everything

  594. he has given to you

  595. and just lay it

  596. at the feet of Jesus

  597. and say,

  598. this is yours Lord.

  599. You did the work,

  600. not me.

  601. It's all for your glory.

  602. Do good works

  603. and give him glory.

  604. And secondly,

  605. if you're here

  606. and you don't know Jesus,

  607. if you've never called

  608. in his name,

  609. don't worry,

  610. I'm not going to ask you

  611. to come to the front.

  612. I'm not going to come down

  613. and lay hands on you

  614. or anything like that

  615. to embarrass you.

  616. I just want to say this to you.

  617. I don't know who you are

  618. or if you're even here

  619. or if you're listening online.

  620. But if that's you,

  621. let me just say this.

  622. Jesus told his disciples,

  623. no one comes to me

  624. unless the Father

  625. who sent me

  626. draws him.

  627. You're here

  628. in Carragoline Baptist Church

  629. on a Sunday

  630. when you could be doing

  631. anything else you want.

  632. I'm not a soccer fan

  633. but I'm sure someone

  634. could tell me

  635. there's probably a match on.

  636. You could be watching,

  637. you could be going out to lunch,

  638. you could just be getting up

  639. out of your own bed.

  640. But you're not doing that.

  641. You're here

  642. listening to

  643. some mad fella from Middleton

  644. you've never met before

  645. talk about

  646. a God

  647. you've never seen.

  648. Maybe never even heard of.

  649. But you're here

  650. because God

  651. has drawn you here

  652. friend

  653. so that you can hear

  654. the good news

  655. that Jesus

  656. died

  657. and Jesus

  658. rose

  659. and Jesus

  660. paid the penalty

  661. for your sin

  662. and my sin

  663. so that we can stand

  664. arm in arm

  665. in front of him

  666. righteous

  667. holy

  668. and blameless

  669. and live forever.

  670. Jesus has died

  671. and risen

  672. and paid that penalty

  673. so that we can stand

  674. before him

  675. as a royal priesthood

  676. holy

  677. and spotless

  678. in his sight

  679. and live with him forever.

  680. There's nothing you need to do.

  681. all that's left for you to do

  682. is to call on his name

  683. and say

  684. Lord

  685. have mercy on me

  686. a sinner.

  687. So there's another hymn I like

  688. it's kind of an old one

  689. glory to his name

  690. come to the fountain

  691. so rich and sweet

  692. cast thy poor soul

  693. at the saviour's feet

  694. plunge in

  695. today

  696. and be made

  697. complete.

  698. Glory to his name.

  699. Amen.

  700. Let's pray.

  701. Gracious heavenly father

  702. if anything has been said

  703. this morning

  704. that's not from you

  705. or that causes you

  706. offense

  707. or doesn't give you glory

  708. I pray you blot it

  709. out of our minds.

  710. I pray that you

  711. imprint

  712. and implant

  713. on our hearts

  714. and our minds

  715. the word of God

  716. that is living

  717. and active

  718. the word of God

  719. that is sufficient

  720. that is all we need

  721. to be trained

  722. to do every good work.

  723. The word of God

  724. that Jesus said

  725. washes us clean

  726. and makes us whole.

  727. Father

  728. for those who are here

  729. this morning

  730. and they share

  731. my profession of faith

  732. in you

  733. I pray that you would

  734. draw near to us

  735. in a very tangible

  736. real way.

  737. Maybe we think

  738. sometimes that the

  739. circumstances

  740. of our life

  741. demonstrate that

  742. we're not doing it right.

  743. Maybe we're afflicted

  744. with sickness

  745. or grief

  746. or joblessness

  747. or homelessness.

  748. Lord help us

  749. not to listen

  750. to the lie

  751. of the enemy

  752. that any material

  753. shortcomings

  754. in our part

  755. mean that

  756. you don't love us

  757. mean that you've

  758. forgotten us

  759. because we know

  760. you haven't Lord.

  761. We know that

  762. you sent your son

  763. so that none

  764. of those

  765. whom you give him

  766. would fall out

  767. of his hand.

  768. Once you wrap

  769. your arms around us

  770. Lord

  771. we're yours

  772. bought and paid for

  773. our debt paid in full

  774. so Lord draw near to us

  775. and give us the comfort

  776. of knowing that reality

  777. today.

  778. Help us to be

  779. real witnesses

  780. to the glory

  781. of your grace

  782. unshamingly

  783. and proudly

  784. proclaiming

  785. that Jesus

  786. is Lord.

  787. Use us Lord

  788. use us as broken

  789. vessels

  790. to bring people

  791. to you

  792. in the name

  793. of Jesus Christ

  794. by the power

  795. of your spirit.

  796. When people

  797. look at us Lord

  798. may they see

  799. the life

  800. of a Christian.

  801. When they listen

  802. to us Lord

  803. may they hear

  804. the words

  805. of a Christian

  806. see the deeds

  807. of a Christian

  808. the actions

  809. of a Christian

  810. and if they could

  811. read our minds Lord

  812. may they read

  813. the mind

  814. of a Christian.

  815. Father thank you

  816. for ripping out

  817. our heart of stone

  818. giving us a heart

  819. of flesh.

  820. Thank you

  821. for sending your son.

  822. Thank you

  823. for the wounds

  824. that pierced

  825. the veil

  826. while we were

  827. once far away

  828. Lord

  829. you've drawn us

  830. near.

  831. Father thank you

  832. for your grace.

  833. Father for those

  834. who don't know you

  835. I pray that even

  836. now we would be

  837. doing a work

  838. of your spirit

  839. in their hearts

  840. and minds.

  841. I pray

  842. whether they're

  843. in this room

  844. or listening

  845. or they're not

  846. our unbelieving

  847. family members

  848. our unbelieving

  849. friends

  850. our work colleagues

  851. or everybody

  852. we know Lord

  853. who doesn't

  854. profess you

  855. as Lord

  856. we pray that

  857. you would be

  858. doing a mighty

  859. work in their

  860. hearts

  861. that you would

  862. be softening

  863. their hearts

  864. that you would

  865. be piercing

  866. the veils

  867. in front of

  868. their eyes

  869. that you would

  870. be causing

  871. them to see

  872. the glory

  873. of your son

  874. Jesus Christ

  875. whom you sent

  876. to die

  877. for them

  878. Father

  879. we know

  880. that you

  881. came into

  882. the world

  883. not to

  884. treat the

  885. healthy

  886. but to

  887. treat the

  888. sick

  889. and Father

  890. we were all

  891. sick once

  892. in fact we

  893. were all

  894. dead once

  895. but you

  896. brought us

  897. back to

  898. life

  899. so for

  900. those who

  901. don't know

  902. you Lord

  903. call them

  904. please

  905. like you

  906. call Lazarus

  907. out of the

  908. grave

  909. Lazarus

  910. come forth

  911. and he

  912. came forth

  913. Lord

  914. we know

  915. that it

  916. is your

  917. call

  918. and your

  919. call only

  920. that will

  921. bring us

  922. to eternal

  923. life

  924. so may

  925. people

  926. answer

  927. that call

  928. even now

  929. Lord

  930. this morning

  931. as we

  932. pray for

  933. this

  934. we pray

  935. for the

  936. life of

  937. this church

  938. we pray

  939. for Johnny

  940. as he's

  941. not here

  942. we thank

  943. you for

  944. his faithful

  945. ministry

  946. of the word

  947. we thank

  948. you for

  949. the elders

  950. here and

  951. the deacons

  952. and all

  953. who faithfully

  954. serve

  955. we thank

  956. you for

  957. every hair

  958. and every

  959. head in

  960. this room

  961. this morning

  962. Lord

  963. we pray

  964. that our

  965. time after

  966. the meeting

  967. would be

  968. a time

  969. of joy

  970. and fellowship

  971. that we

  972. would find

  973. ways maybe

  974. where we can

  975. practically love

  976. one another

  977. and serve

  978. one another

  979. this week

  980. where there

  981. are needs

  982. in this

  983. church

  984. Lord

  985. may we

  986. seek them

  987. out to

  988. meet those

  989. needs

  990. and in

  991. my own

  992. church

  993. as well

  994. Lord

  995. we pray

  996. for all

  997. the churches

  998. in this

  999. land

  1000. who faithfully

  1001. proclaim the

  1002. gospel

  1003. and we

  1004. thank you

  1005. Lord

  1006. all we can

  1007. do that's

  1008. left to do

  1009. is thank you

  1010. for sending

  1011. your son

  1012. to bring us

  1013. out of the

  1014. darkness

  1015. out of the

  1016. grave

  1017. into new

  1018. life

  1019. not our

  1020. will in

  1021. any of these

  1022. things we

  1023. prayed for

  1024. Lord

  1025. but your

  1026. perfect

  1027. and holy

  1028. and righteous

  1029. will be

  1030. done

  1031. in Jesus

  1032. name

  1033. Amen
