  16. of Solomon? Solomon reigned in Jerusalem over all Israel for 40 years. Then he rested with

  17. his ancestors and was buried in the city of David his father. And Rehoboam his son succeeded

  18. him as king.

  19. Thanks very much, Connor.

  20. Let's pray.

  21. Father, thank you for your word. Thank you for this true account of Solomon's life. And

  22. we pray that through it, it would teach us much about ourselves.

  23. But more importantly, it would show us more about how great you are.

  24. And what it is to turn from all our loves of other things and other people that we might

  25. love you as we ought. Father, work in our lives today. Build us up and encourage us. We ask

  26. this in Jesus' name. Amen.

  27. As we drove out of the driving test centre, my assessor gave me the first instruction.

  28. Turn right.

  29. I turned left. And then the moment came, he handed me a piece of paper and written

  30. clearly in red letters at the bottom of the page. Failed. None of us likes to fail. In

  31. fact, we do everything that we can to try and hide our failures. We're embarrassed by it.

  32. We cover it up in all kinds of different ways.

  33. Well, written across chapter 11 of 1 Kings in bold red letters is the word failed.

  34. There is no hiding from the truth.

  35. It may come as a surprise to us because up to this point, Solomon has been doing well as

  36. king. He's not perfect, but his people who he is king over are safe and secure and the

  37. nations are coming to him for blessing. But it seems Solomon has not been listening to the

  38. instructions. And it has all ended in disappointing failure. Now we need to be careful how we read this.

  39. Not as just some historical event in the past, but read it as our story. Because we are just like

  40. Solomon. But thankfully, as we look at this together, we'll see that it's not all doom,

  41. human gloom. Because chapter 11 shows us that we can experience fullness of life when we admit to our

  42. failure and rest in God's faithfulness. That's like a summary theme for the whole of chapter 11.

  43. We can experience fullness of life when we admit to our failure and rest in God's faithfulness.

  44. Well, let's have a look. First, a portrait of our failure. A portrait of our failure. Reading the first few

  45. verses of chapter 11 is like looking at an x-ray of our hearts. It reveals a terrible heart disease.

  46. The heart of failure is always our hearts. Look at verse 4.

  47. As Solomon grew old, his wives turned his heart after other gods and his heart was not fully devoted to the

  48. Lord his God as the heart of David his father had been. Now when the Bible talks about the heart,

  49. it's not talking about that big muscle inside our chest that's pumping oxygenated blood around our body.

  50. The heart is always talking about the real you. It's the control centre of our character.

  51. What's in the heart tells us who we really are. Now Solomon's heart is not in good condition.

  52. In fact, we can see the cause of his heart failure. There's three failures we're going to look at. First,

  53. the failure to listen. Look at verse 1. King Solomon, however, loved many foreign women besides

  54. Pharaoh's daughter. That was his first wife. Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Sidonians and Hittites.

  55. They were from the nations about which the Lord had told the Israelites,

  56. you must not intermarry with them because they will surely turn your hearts after other gods.

  57. God had said, but he didn't listen. In fact, there were specific instructions for the king.

  58. Keep your finger in 1 Kings 11 and go back to Deuteronomy.

  59. At the beginning of the Bible, Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy.

  60. Deuteronomy chapter 17.

    Deuteronomy 17 chapter mention

  61. So specific instructions for the king. Deuteronomy 17 verse 14.

    Deuteronomy 17:14

  62. When you enter the lands the Lord your God is giving you and you've taken possession of it and

  63. has settled in it and you say, let us set a king over us like all the nations around us.

  64. Be sure to appoint over you the king the Lord your God chooses.

  65. Well, what's this king to be like? Look at verse 17.

  66. He must not take many wives or his heart will be led astray.

  67. Simple, isn't it?

  68. Back to 1 Kings 11.

  69. It's not that Solomon didn't understand God's word.

  70. Solomon just chose not to listen.

  71. So chapter 11 verse 3.

  72. He had 700 wives of royal birth

  73. and 300 concubines.

  74. And not surprisingly,

  75. his wives led him astray.

  76. We can call it disobedience.

  77. Now,

  78. we mightn't be like Solomon in that we have many, many wives.

  79. But how often do we read God's word

  80. and fail to listen

  81. and do what it says?

  82. We're a little bit like the person James describes

  83. in chapter 1 of James.

  84. Let me read it to you.

  85. Do not merely listen to the word

  86. and so deceive yourselves.

  87. Do what it says.

  88. Anyone who listens to the word

  89. but does not do what it says

  90. is like someone who looks at his face in the mirror

  91. and after looking at himself

  92. goes away and immediately forgets

  93. what he looks like.

  94. How many times

  95. do I look into God's word?

  96. It shows me what to do.

  97. It shows me what to do.

  98. So clear.

  99. And yet I don't do it.

  100. I fail to listen.

  101. Second,

  102. there's a failure to learn.

  103. Solomon not only had God's word,

  104. he also had a very good example to follow.

  105. Look at the end of verse 4.

  106. We're told that his heart

  107. was not fully devoted to the Lord his God

  108. as the heart of David his father had been.

  109. Now we know something of David.

  110. It's not saying David was perfect.

  111. We know that King David messed up big time.

  112. David had an affair with somebody called Bathsheba.

  113. Not only that,

  114. he murdered her husband in the process.

  115. But here's the point.

  116. David learned.

  117. He confessed.

  118. Psalm 51 tells us of his confession.

  119. But Solomon, it seems,

  120. never learned.

  121. He just kept on going.

  122. 700 times of repeated failure.

  123. As well as 300 other failures.

  124. So verse 6.

  125. Solomon did evil in the eyes of the Lord.

  126. He did not follow the Lord completely

  127. as David his father had done.

  128. It's just too close for comfort, isn't it?

  129. I mightn't have 700 wives.

  130. But sadly, I have to admit

  131. that in my 22 years of marriage,

  132. I have failed my wife more than 700 times.

  133. A crossword.

  134. Selfish thoughts.

  135. Unforgiveness.

  136. Putting myself first.

  137. We disobey, don't we?

  138. In the same way,

  139. again and again and again.

  140. We just do not learn.

  141. So we don't listen.

  142. We don't learn.

  143. And we don't love.

  144. Despite everything that God had said.

  145. Look at the end of verse 2.

  146. Nevertheless,

  147. Solomon held fast

  148. to his wives in love.

  149. He's got a grip.

  150. He's not going to let go

  151. of his disobedience.

  152. He likes it.

  153. He enjoys it.

  154. His love for his wives

  155. turned him

  156. to love of other gods.

  157. Verse 5.

  158. He followed Ashtoreth,

  159. the goddess of the Sidonians.

  160. And Moloch,

  161. the detestable god

  162. of the Ammonites.

  163. Now these just weren't

  164. kind of little stone figures.

  165. These were gods

  166. that they sacrificed babies to.

  167. I mean, this was serious.

  168. Sacrificing children

  169. in the hope that the gods

  170. would somehow bring blessing.

  171. This is the way

  172. in which Solomon went.

  173. Now as we read this,

  174. we can't sit back

  175. with a feeling of pride

  176. and go,

  177. well that's not me.

  178. I would never do anything

  179. as disastrous as that.

  180. I don't love other gods.

  181. You won't find any idols

  182. or anything like that

  183. in my house.

  184. Well we all replace God

  185. with other things

  186. and other people

  187. all the time.

  188. None of us has loved God

  189. with all our heart.

  190. And in case we think otherwise,

  191. listen to Jesus.

  192. He says,

  193. what comes out of a person

  194. defiles them

  195. for it is written

  196. out of a person's heart

  197. that evil thoughts come,

  198. sexual immorality

  199. and theft

  200. and murder

  201. and adultery

  202. and greed

  203. and malice

  204. and deceit

  205. and lewdness

  206. and envy

  207. and slander

  208. and arrogance

  209. and folly.

  210. Can you recognize

  211. any of those?

  212. All of these evils

  213. come from inside

  214. and defile a person.

  215. They come from

  216. within the heart.

  217. You see,

  218. like Solomon,

  219. we all have

  220. heart failure.

  221. We do not listen.

  222. We do not learn.

  223. And we do not love.

  224. Now it's not

  225. as if Solomon

  226. suddenly woke up

  227. one day

  228. with heart failure.

  229. It was progressive.

  230. We can think of it this way.

  231. The person

  232. who has a physical

  233. heart attack

  234. does so,

  235. well,

  236. it's because of years

  237. of unhealthy diet

  238. or no exercise

  239. or too much stress

  240. at work.

  241. It builds

  242. and it builds

  243. and it builds

  244. and hearts go bang

  245. due to a lifetime

  246. of bad habits

  247. and decisions.

  248. Well,

  249. that's what God

  250. is saying

  251. about our hearts.

  252. I mean,

  253. look at Solomon.

  254. Right at the beginning

  255. of his reign,

  256. we read this.

  257. you may remember it

  258. from chapter 3.

  259. It tells us here

  260. what Solomon was like.

  261. Solomon showed

  262. his love for the Lord

  263. by walking

  264. according to the instructions

  265. given him

  266. by his father David.

  267. Now,

  268. 40 years later,

  269. look at chapter 11,

  270. verse 1.

  271. King Solomon,

  272. however,

  273. loved many

  274. foreign women.

  275. it's not that Solomon

  276. went from hero

  277. to zero

  278. in one day.

  279. Verse 4,

  280. as Solomon grew old,

  281. his wives

  282. turned his hearts

  283. after other gods.

  284. Slowly,

  285. over time,

  286. as he progressed

  287. through the years,

  288. he had fallen

  289. into a habit

  290. of failing

  291. to listen,

  292. failing to learn,

  293. failing to love.

  294. and it ended

  295. in heart failure.

  296. Now,

  297. we need to take note,

  298. don't we?

  299. Failure to deal

  300. with our hearts

  301. and we will have

  302. a serious

  303. heart failure.

  304. Continue to hide

  305. over and cover

  306. our failures,

  307. refuse to admit

  308. and to seek help.

  309. Well,

  310. we'll just end up

  311. destroying our own lives

  312. and destroying

  313. of those around us.

  314. But much more

  315. than just

  316. destroying

  317. our own lives,

  318. not only

  319. is there heart

  320. failure,

  321. but there is

  322. the curse

  323. of failure.

  324. And the curse

  325. of failure

  326. is the curse.

  327. Have a look

  328. at verse 9,

  329. chapter 11.

  330. The Lord

  331. became angry

  332. with Solomon

  333. because his heart

  334. had turned

  335. away from the Lord,

  336. the God of Israel,

  337. who had appeared

  338. to him twice.

  339. So not only

  340. had he everything

  341. that God had said

  342. in his word,

  343. but,

  344. well,

  345. God had come

  346. to him

  347. specifically twice

  348. and showed him

  349. how to live.

  350. And the Lord

  351. became angry

  352. with Solomon.

  353. Now,

  354. I don't know

  355. how you feel

  356. about that,

  357. but I guess

  358. we don't like

  359. the idea

  360. of God

  361. being angry,

  362. do we?

  363. We don't like

  364. that image.

  365. Perhaps because

  366. of experiences

  367. we have faced

  368. before an angry

  369. person.

  370. Well,

  371. let's be clear,

  372. this is not

  373. an uncontrolled,

  374. raging temper.

  375. This is God's

  376. jealous love.

  377. He is angry

  378. that we turn

  379. our hearts

  380. from his love

  381. and seek out

  382. love from other

  383. things and other

  384. people.

  385. God doesn't just

  386. sit back and watch

  387. us ruin our lives

  388. and the lives

  389. of other people

  390. and say,

  391. you know what,

  392. it doesn't matter.

  393. Feel free,

  394. just live the way

  395. you want to.

  396. We'll just kind

  397. of cover it up

  398. and sort it all

  399. out.

  400. It doesn't matter.

  401. Well,

  402. it does matter.

  403. God's anger

  404. is his fair

  405. and settled

  406. response to sin

  407. and it will

  408. be punished.

  409. How can God

  410. let his creation

  411. and his world

  412. go on in cycles

  413. of disaster

  414. and destruction

  415. and just say

  416. it doesn't matter?

  417. For Solomon,

  418. instead of blessing,

  419. there was curse.

  420. Have a look

  421. at verse 11.

  422. So the Lord

  423. said to Solomon,

  424. Since this is

  425. your attitude

  426. and you have

  427. not kept

  428. my covenant

  429. and my decrees

  430. which I commanded

  431. you,

  432. I will most

  433. certainly tear

  434. the kingdom

  435. away from you

  436. and give it

  437. to one of your

  438. subordinates.

  439. And so began

  440. the downfall

  441. of Solomon

  442. and the kingdom.

  443. And as we read

  444. on through the book,

  445. we'll see the kingdom

  446. divides,

  447. it falls apart,

  448. it falls apart

  449. and the people

  450. end up

  451. in exile.

  452. But for Solomon,

  453. the curse begins

  454. like this.

  455. Have a look

  456. at verse 14.

  457. Then the Lord

  458. raised up

  459. against Solomon

  460. an adversary,

  461. Hadad,

  462. the Edomite.

  463. And over

  464. at verse 23,

  465. And God

  466. raised up

  467. against Solomon

  468. another adversary,

  469. Razan,

  470. son of Eliadah.

  471. Now we don't

  472. need to worry

  473. about who

  474. these people

  475. are for now,

  476. but we just

  477. need to see

  478. that God

  479. does not

  480. ignore

  481. sinful behaviour.

  482. He will

  483. deal with it

  484. and in this case

  485. he raises up

  486. an adversary.

  487. Not just

  488. two of them,

  489. but look at

  490. verse 26,

  491. Also

  492. Jeroboam,

  493. son of Nebat,

  494. rebelled

  495. against the king.

  496. One of Solomon's

  497. closest allies.

  498. You see,

  499. if we don't

  500. face our

  501. failure now,

  502. if we don't

  503. admit to our

  504. failure to

  505. listen,

  506. to learn,

  507. and to love

  508. as we should,

  509. we will face

  510. the just

  511. and right

  512. anger

  513. of God.

  514. The end

  515. of Solomon's

  516. life

  517. is a great

  518. tragedy,

  519. isn't it?

  520. We read

  521. in verse 43

  522. that he

  523. rested with

  524. his ancestors

  525. and was

  526. buried in

  527. the city

  528. of David

  529. his father.

  530. What a

  531. sad,

  532. sad end

  533. to what

  534. began

  535. so,

  536. so well.

  537. You see,

  538. the portrait

  539. of Solomon's

  540. life

  541. is a

  542. portrait

  543. of our

  544. own lives.

  545. But

  546. thankfully

  547. and wonderfully

  548. this is not

  549. the end

  550. of the story.

  551. We have a

  552. portrait of

  553. our failure,

  554. but we also

  555. have the

  556. promise

  557. of God's

  558. faithfulness

  559. or the

  560. faithfulness of

  561. our God.

  562. You see,

  563. while we can

  564. write failure

  565. over chapter

  566. 11,

  567. we can stamp

  568. an even bigger

  569. faithfulness

  570. over all

  571. of that

  572. because God's

  573. faithfulness

  574. is always

  575. greater

  576. than our

  577. failure.

  578. First,

  579. faithful

  580. promise.

  581. Remember what

  582. God had said

  583. to Solomon.

  584. Have a look

  585. back at

  586. chapter 9.

  587. Just to

  588. remind ourselves

  589. of what God

  590. had been saying

  591. to Solomon

  592. in his

  593. role as

  594. king.

  595. Chapter 9,

  596. verse 4.

  597. It's very

  598. clear,

  599. he says,

  600. as for you,

  601. if you walk

  602. before me

  603. faithfully

  604. with integrity

  605. of heart

  606. and uprightness

  607. as David

  608. your father

  609. did,

  610. and do

  611. all I

  612. command

  613. and observe

  614. my decrees

  615. and laws,

  616. I will

  617. establish

  618. your royal

  619. throne

  620. over Israel

  621. forever.

  622. As I

  623. promised

  624. David

  625. your father

  626. when I

  627. said,

  628. you shall

  629. never fail

  630. to have

  631. a successor

  632. on the

  633. throne of

  634. Israel.

  635. But,

  636. if you

  637. or your

  638. descendants

  639. turn away

  640. from me

  641. and do

  642. not observe

  643. the commands

  644. and decrees

  645. I have given

  646. you,

  647. and go off

  648. and serve

  649. other gods

  650. and worship

  651. them,

  652. then I

  653. will cut

  654. off Israel

  655. from the

  656. land that

  657. I have

  658. given them

  659. and will

  660. reject this

  661. temple

  662. I have

  663. consecrated

  664. for my

  665. name.

  666. Very clear,

  667. isn't it?

  668. Solomon,

  669. you obey,

  670. you do

  671. what you're

  672. meant to

  673. do,

  674. and all

  675. will go

  676. well for

  677. you.

  678. But if

  679. you fail,

  680. well then I

  681. will leave

  682. you.

  683. Well,

  684. Solomon did

  685. fail,

  686. that's what

  687. we've just

  688. looked at,

  689. haven't we?

  690. And how

  691. is God

  692. going to

  693. respond?

  694. Well,

  695. go back

  696. to chapter

  697. 11,

  698. verse 11.

  699. So the

  700. Lord said

  701. to Solomon,

  702. since this

  703. is your

  704. attitude and

  705. you have

  706. not kept

  707. my covenant

  708. and my

  709. decrees

  710. which I

  711. commanded

  712. you,

  713. I will

  714. most certainly

  715. tear the

  716. kingdom away

  717. from you

  718. and give

  719. it to

  720. one of

  721. your

  722. subordinates.

  723. but,

  724. but,

  725. look at

  726. verse 13,

  727. yet I

  728. will not

  729. tear the

  730. whole

  731. kingdom

  732. from him

  733. but will

  734. give him

  735. one tribe

  736. for the

  737. sake of

  738. David my

  739. servant

  740. and for

  741. the sake

  742. of Jerusalem

  743. which I

  744. have chosen.

  745. Look at

  746. the end

  747. of verse

  748. 31.

  749. See,

  750. I am

  751. going to

  752. tear the

  753. kingdom out

  754. of Solomon's

  755. hands and

  756. give you

  757. ten tribes.

  758. He's going

  759. to pass

  760. that on

  761. to others.

  762. But,

  763. for the

  764. sake of

  765. my servant

  766. David.

  767. Verse

  768. 33.

  769. I will

  770. do this

  771. because they

  772. have forsaken

  773. me and

  774. because they

  775. have worshipped

  776. these other

  777. gods.

  778. Verse

  779. 34.

  780. But,

  781. I will

  782. not take

  783. the whole

  784. kingdom out

  785. of Solomon's

  786. hands.

  787. God

  788. will

  789. preserve

  790. his

  791. people.

  792. He will

  793. preserve

  794. a people

  795. for himself

  796. and from

  797. that people

  798. will be

  799. a king.

  800. God

  801. has not

  802. gone back

  803. on his

  804. promise.

  805. God

  806. is keeping

  807. his promise.

  808. We may

  809. fail

  810. but God

  811. is faithful.

  812. Verse

  813. 36.

  814. I will

  815. give him

  816. one tribe

  817. to his

  818. son so

  819. that David

  820. my servant

  821. may always

  822. have a

  823. lamp before

  824. me in

  825. Jerusalem,

  826. the city

  827. where I

  828. chose to

  829. put my

  830. name.

  831. God

  832. had always

  833. promised

  834. that he

  835. would have

  836. a people

  837. who would

  838. be faithful

  839. to him,

  840. who would

  841. love him.

  842. So,

  843. down through

  844. time amidst

  845. all the

  846. darkness of

  847. failure,

  848. the lamp

  849. of God's

  850. promise

  851. continued to

  852. shine like

  853. a beacon

  854. of hope,

  855. a light

  856. of faithfulness

  857. that God

  858. would always

  859. keep a

  860. people,

  861. a people

  862. who would

  863. be faithful,

  864. who would

  865. be loyal

  866. to him

  867. and who

  868. would love

  869. him.

  870. And that's

  871. how God

  872. works,

  873. you see.

  874. Our failure

  875. may set us

  876. on a collision

  877. course of

  878. disorder and

  879. destruction,

  880. but God

  881. intervenes by

  882. his faithfulness

  883. to bring

  884. hope.

  885. You see,

  886. God's

  887. faithfulness

  888. is always

  889. greater

  890. than our

  891. failure.

  892. So,

  893. there's the

  894. faithful

  895. promise

  896. and we

  897. have the

  898. faithful

  899. king

  900. because the

  901. light of

  902. God's

  903. promise

  904. continued

  905. to shine.

  906. Not even

  907. the failure

  908. of God's

  909. people could

  910. ever

  911. extinguish

  912. the light

  913. of God's

  914. promise.

  915. The flickering

  916. lamp

  917. would become

  918. the light

  919. of the

  920. world.

  921. As God's

  922. king,

  923. Jesus Christ

  924. would come

  925. bringing hope

  926. amidst

  927. great failure

  928. because in

  929. Jesus we

  930. always find

  931. the true

  932. and faithful

  933. king.

  934. And think

  935. about it

  936. with me.

  937. he is

  938. the king

  939. who listened

  940. to God.

  941. The king

  942. who learned

  943. from God.

  944. The king

  945. who loved

  946. God.

  947. He did

  948. not fail.

  949. No sin

  950. in him

  951. was ever

  952. found.

  953. God's

  954. faithfulness

  955. is always

  956. greater than

  957. our failure.

  958. You see,

  959. this king

  960. would come

  961. and he

  962. would take

  963. all our

  964. failures

  965. and cover

  966. us in

  967. his

  968. faithfulness.

  969. That is

  970. what we

  971. see as

  972. Jesus dies

  973. on the

  974. cross,

  975. taking my

  976. disobedience

  977. and by

  978. faith I

  979. receive the

  980. perfect

  981. obedience

  982. of Jesus.

  983. You see,

  984. if failure

  985. has been

  986. written across

  987. our hearts,

  988. then God

  989. has come

  990. through his

  991. son,

  992. the Lord

  993. Jesus Christ,

  994. and stamps

  995. his faithfulness

  996. over our

  997. failure.

  998. If you

  999. are trusting

  1000. in Christ

  1001. today,

  1002. I want

  1003. us to

  1004. grasp

  1005. how it

  1006. is that

  1007. God sees

  1008. you and

  1009. views you

  1010. today.

  1011. God

  1012. looks at

  1013. you right

  1014. now and

  1015. he does

  1016. not see

  1017. your failures.

  1018. He does

  1019. not see

  1020. your shame

  1021. or your

  1022. guilt,

  1023. but what

  1024. he sees

  1025. is the

  1026. beauty of

  1027. Christ's

  1028. faithfulness

  1029. that covers

  1030. you.

  1031. We have

  1032. a faithful

  1033. king in

  1034. Jesus,

  1035. but that

  1036. is not

  1037. the end

  1038. of the

  1039. story,

  1040. for it

  1041. is God's

  1042. desire

  1043. that he

  1044. would build

  1045. and he

  1046. would create

  1047. a faithful

  1048. people to

  1049. himself.

  1050. God has

  1051. promised that

  1052. he would

  1053. keep a

  1054. faithful

  1055. people,

  1056. a people

  1057. with brand

  1058. new

  1059. hearts.

  1060. Have a

  1061. look at

  1062. Hebrews

    Hebrews 10 chapter mention

  1063. chapter 10.

  1064. Hebrews

    Hebrews 10 chapter mention

  1065. chapter 10.

  1066. If somebody

  1067. could give

  1068. me a page

  1069. number,

  1070. that would

  1071. be great.

  1072. Hebrews 10.

  1073. 1-2-0-8.

  1074. Hebrews 10.

  1075. And we'll

  1076. pick it up

  1077. in verse

  1078. 14.

  1079. Follow

  1080. along with

  1081. me.

  1082. Hebrews

    Hebrews 10:14

  1083. chapter 10,

  1084. verse 14.

  1085. For

  1086. by one

  1087. sacrifice,

  1088. he has

  1089. made

  1090. perfect

  1091. forever

  1092. those who

  1093. are being

  1094. made holy.

  1095. You see,

  1096. the sacrifice

  1097. of the

  1098. king,

  1099. who has

  1100. taken our

  1101. failures

  1102. on himself

  1103. and given

  1104. us his

  1105. faithfulness,

  1106. by that

  1107. sacrifice,

  1108. he has

  1109. made us

  1110. perfect

  1111. in God's

  1112. sight

  1113. forever.

  1114. Verse 15.

  1115. The Holy

  1116. Spirit also

  1117. testifies to

  1118. us about

  1119. this.

  1120. First he

  1121. says,

  1122. this is the

  1123. covenant I

  1124. will make

  1125. with them

  1126. after that

  1127. time,

  1128. says the

  1129. Lord.

  1130. What will

  1131. he do?

  1132. I will

  1133. put my

  1134. laws in

  1135. their

  1136. hearts,

  1137. and I

  1138. will write

  1139. them on

  1140. their

  1141. minds.

  1142. God not

  1143. only deals

  1144. with our

  1145. failures of

  1146. the past,

  1147. but he

  1148. gives us

  1149. a new

  1150. heart to

  1151. live for

  1152. the future.

  1153. Hearts

  1154. that are

  1155. so transformed

  1156. and so

  1157. changed,

  1158. filled with

  1159. the Holy

  1160. Spirit,

  1161. so that

  1162. we now

  1163. listen to

  1164. God.

  1165. we are

  1166. now able

  1167. to learn

  1168. from God

  1169. and we

  1170. have hearts

  1171. that now

  1172. love God.

  1173. By his

  1174. Holy Spirit

  1175. he transforms

  1176. our failed

  1177. lives,

  1178. day by

  1179. day,

  1180. into lives

  1181. that are

  1182. faithful.

  1183. Does that

  1184. mean I'm

  1185. never ever

  1186. going to

  1187. fail anymore?

  1188. No, it

  1189. doesn't mean I

  1190. will never

  1191. fail again.

  1192. I will

  1193. still fail,

  1194. but,

  1195. verse 17,

  1196. then he

  1197. adds,

  1198. their sins

  1199. and lawless

  1200. acts I

  1201. will remember

  1202. no more.

  1203. And where

  1204. these have

  1205. been forgiven,

  1206. sacrifice for

  1207. sin is

  1208. no longer

  1209. necessary.

  1210. You see,

  1211. God's

  1212. faithfulness is

  1213. always greater

  1214. than my

  1215. failure.

  1216. I may

  1217. fail,

  1218. I will

  1219. fail,

  1220. but he

  1221. will

  1222. remember

  1223. my

  1224. failures

  1225. no more

  1226. because they

  1227. have been

  1228. covered and

  1229. dealt with

  1230. by Jesus

  1231. at the

  1232. cross.

  1233. Failure

  1234. may be

  1235. written on

  1236. our hearts,

  1237. but God

  1238. has stamped

  1239. his faithfulness

  1240. over our

  1241. failure.

  1242. God

  1243. now,

  1244. we might

  1245. know that

  1246. is true.

  1247. We

  1248. might say,

  1249. yes,

  1250. I agree

  1251. with that.

  1252. But how

  1253. many of

  1254. us continue

  1255. to live

  1256. with the

  1257. shame of

  1258. the past?

  1259. Sitting here

  1260. today,

  1261. perhaps avoiding

  1262. eye contact

  1263. with people

  1264. in case they

  1265. ask.

  1266. We don't

  1267. want to be

  1268. reminded of

  1269. the past.

  1270. keeping

  1271. busy doing

  1272. other things

  1273. so that we

  1274. don't have to

  1275. talk to

  1276. people.

  1277. You see,

  1278. we no longer

  1279. have to hide

  1280. our failures.

  1281. We no longer

  1282. need to cover

  1283. it all up

  1284. because today,

  1285. in Christ,

  1286. I am covered

  1287. in God's

  1288. faithfulness.

  1289. That means

  1290. I can go

  1291. with my

  1292. head held

  1293. high,

  1294. humbly

  1295. before God,

  1296. forgiven,

  1297. with a

  1298. new heart

  1299. to listen

  1300. to God

  1301. and his

  1302. word,

  1303. to learn

  1304. from him

  1305. and from

  1306. others,

  1307. and a

  1308. heart that

  1309. loves him

  1310. and will

  1311. submit to

  1312. him.

  1313. Chapter

  1314. 11 shows

  1315. us

  1316. that we

  1317. can experience

  1318. fullness

  1319. of life

  1320. when we

  1321. admit to

  1322. our failures

  1323. and rest

  1324. in God's

  1325. faithfulness.

  1326. How are

  1327. you living

  1328. today?

  1329. Are you

  1330. living in

  1331. the past

  1332. of failure

  1333. or are you

  1334. rejoicing

  1335. in God's

  1336. faithfulness?

  1337. Let's pray
