  1. Okay, 1 Kings chapter 12, beginning at verse 1.

    1 Kings 12 chapter mention

  2. Rehoboam went to Shechem, for all Israel had gone there to make him king.

  3. When Jeroboam, son of Nebat, heard this, he was still in Egypt, where he had fled from King Solomon, he returned from Egypt.

  4. So they sent for Jeroboam, and he and the whole assembly of Israel went to Rehoboam and said to him,

  5. Your father put a heavy yoke on us, but now lightened the harsh labor and the heavy yoke he put on us, and we will serve you.

  6. Rehoboam answered, Go away for three days and then come back to me.

  7. So the people went away.

  8. Then King Rehoboam consulted the elders who had served his father Solomon during his lifetime.

  9. How would you advise me to answer these people, he asked.

  10. They replied, If today you will be a servant to these people and serve them and give them a favorable answer, they will always be your servants.

  11. But Rehoboam rejected the advice the elders gave him and consulted the young men who had grown up with him and were serving him.

  12. He asked them, What is your advice?

  13. How should we answer these people who say to me, Lighten the yoke your father put on us?

  14. The young men who had grown up with him replied, These people have said to you, Your father put a heavy yoke on us, but make our yoke lighter.

  15. Now tell them, My little finger is thicker than my father's waist.

  16. My father laid on you a heavy yoke.

  17. I will make it even heavier.

  18. My father scourged you with whips.

  19. I will scourge you with scorpions.

  20. Three days later, Jeroboam and all the people returned to Rehoboam as the king had said, Come back to me in three days.

  21. The king answered the people harshly, rejecting the advice given him by the elders.

  22. He followed the advice of the young men and said, My father made your yoke heavy.

  23. I will make it even heavier.

  24. My father scourged you with whips.

  25. I will scourge you with scorpions.

  26. So the king did not listen to the people, for this turn of events was from the Lord.

  27. To fulfill the word, the Lord had spoken to Jeroboam, son of Nebat, to Ahijah the Shilonite.

  28. Thanks very much, Chris.

  29. Let's keep our Bibles open as we continue in our studies, 1 Kings.

  30. If you've missed any along the way, you can find them all on the church website.

  31. So they've all been recorded for the purposes if you're on Sunday school or creche or you've missed any.

  32. They are there for us to be able to follow along.

  33. So I encourage you to do that.

  34. Now let's pray.

  35. Father, thank you that you are the Lord of heaven and earth.

  36. the Lord who has written his word down for us, preserved it through the centuries so that we have it today in our language.

  37. We thank you for this wonderful privilege that you speak to us through your word today.

  38. And we pray that it would have such a transforming and changing effect on our lives.

  39. That it would cause us to bow in wonder and worship at our great King.

  40. So please help us today, we ask in Jesus' name.

  41. Amen.

  42. Amen.

  43. So, who decides if Britain will leave or stay?

  44. Who determines whether there will be a soft border or a hard border?

  45. Who's in charge?

  46. Somebody said something.

  47. Who decides if you get married or move to another country?

  48. Who determines where you live and where you work?

  49. Who's in charge?

  50. Well, listen to this from Proverbs.

  51. In their hearts, humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.

  52. It's telling us that we are free to make all kinds of decisions, but every decision is under the direction of God.

  53. Ultimately, it is God who is in control.

  54. Now, Proverbs 16, verse 9, that we have there on the screen, is a great summary of the text that was just read to us.

    Proverbs 16:9

  55. If you want a summary for what 1 Kings 12, 1 to 15 or 1 to 24 is all about, well, in their hearts, humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.

  56. We've reached a critical point in the story of the kingdom.

  57. Under Solomon, the kingdom was at its best.

  58. The people were blessed, living in their own land.

  59. They were happy and secure.

  60. But, if you remember from last week, have a quick look back at chapter 11, verse 4.

  61. Chapter 11, verse 4.

  62. As Solomon grew old, his wives turned his heart after other gods, and his heart was not fully devoted to the Lord his God, as the heart of David his father had been.

  63. And what follows is a sad decline of the kingdom.

  64. Solomon's son, Rehoboam, becomes king, and the kingdom divides.

  65. Bad decisions and selfish choices have left the kingdom in a terrible mess.

  66. But, chapter 12 is written to remind us that God is the supreme king, ruling over the plans of man to fulfill his promises.

  67. God is the supreme king, ruling over the plans of man to fulfill his promises.

  68. So, two big things that we're going to look at this morning, that I trust will be helpful for us.

  69. First, the plans of man serve the purposes of God.

  70. The plans of man serve the purposes of God.

  71. Let's pick it up in chapter 11, verse 42.

  72. Chapter 11, verse 42.

  73. Solomon reigned in Jerusalem, over all Israel, that is the United Kingdom, for 40 years.

  74. Then he rested with his ancestors and was buried in the city of David his father, and Rehoboam his son succeeded him as king.

  75. Rehoboam went to Shechem, for all Israel had gone there to make him king.

  76. Now, it seems a normal succession of power.

  77. They even go to a place called Shechem.

  78. That was where God spoke to Abraham and where Moses had gone to speak with God.

  79. Yet, tragically, in chapter 12, there seems to be little listening to God.

  80. In fact, God is subtly ignored.

  81. The people see the change in king as an opportunity to change the way things are done.

  82. So, look at verse 3.

  83. So, they sent for Jeroboam.

  84. We're going to get confused, but let's keep our focus.

  85. There's a Rehoboam.

  86. He's king.

  87. Jeroboam was a person who was under Solomon, but had begun to rebel against Solomon.

  88. He didn't like what he was doing.

  89. So, the people sent for Jeroboam.

  90. And he and the whole assembly of Israel went to Rehoboam, the king, and said to him,

  91. Your father put a heavy yoke on us.

  92. But now lighten the harsh labor and the heavy yoke he put on us, and we will serve you.

  93. Rehoboam answered, Well, go away for three days, then come back to me, and I'll have a decision.

  94. So, the people went away.

  95. Obviously, the king needs some advice.

  96. The last thing he needs at this point is an all-out rebellion.

  97. So, in verse 6, we're told that the king went off to his elders, asked them for their advice,

  98. What should I do?

  99. And they responded with great wisdom.

  100. Serve them well, Solomon, and they will always serve you.

  101. Be kind to them, and they'll always be in your pocket, as it were.

  102. But Rehoboam doesn't seem to be in the mood for much listening.

  103. That seems a little weak and pathetic.

  104. Not a great way to start your reign as a king, giving in to your subjects.

  105. So, Rehoboam turns to his old college buddies.

  106. What should we do about these complaints, he asks them.

  107. Well, they respond in verse 10.

  108. The young men who had grown up with him replied,

  109. These people have said to you,

  110. Your father put a heavy yoke on us, but make our yoke lighter.

  111. Now tell them,

  112. My little finger is thicker than my father's waist.

  113. In other words, you tell the people,

  114. You think my father was harsh?

  115. Well, I'm going to show you who's boss.

  116. Verse 11.

  117. My father laid on you a heavy yoke.

  118. I will make it even heavier.

  119. My father scourged you with whips.

  120. I will scourge you with scorpions.

  121. That is, whips with lumps of lead at the end of it.

  122. Well, that sounds more like the role of a king, doesn't it?

  123. I like that, Rehoboam is thinking to himself.

  124. Time to show them who's king round here.

  125. I'm going to teach them a lesson about authority and power.

  126. So just as Rehoboam had said three days later,

  127. he goes back to the people to give the answer.

  128. Have a look at verse 14.

  129. He followed the advice of all the young men.

  130. In other words, he ignored the advice of the elders and said,

  131. My father made your yoke heavy.

  132. I will make it even heavier.

  133. My father scourged you with whips.

  134. Well, I'm going to scourge you with scorpions.

  135. So tell me,

  136. who decided what to do with the people?

  137. Who determined that the people should be treated harshly?

  138. Well, he took advice from some younger people

  139. but it certainly looks like Rehoboam is the one in charge.

  140. He gave the decree and after all, he's the king.

  141. Now we could be asking the same kind of questions about our country.

  142. Who's decided that Fine Gael is in power?

  143. I mean, we had a vote, didn't we?

  144. Who determines what laws are passed

  145. and how and when abortions should be carried out?

  146. Well, it's the people, isn't it?

  147. Because we all voted at the recent referendum.

  148. And what about our church?

  149. Right now we're in the process of appointing deacons.

  150. Who decides who is a deacon?

  151. Is it the elders?

  152. Who determines what role and how they should serve?

  153. Or does the church decide that?

  154. Or is it the person themselves?

  155. And think about your own life.

  156. Who decides what college course you take

  157. and where you end up working in your life?

  158. I mean, we've all got the freedom to choose, don't we?

  159. And who determines how you use your money?

  160. And what you spend it on?

  161. And where you go at the weekends?

  162. I mean, it belongs to us

  163. and it's us who pays the money over at the end of the day.

  164. You see, we've all got freedom to make our choices.

  165. We can all make our plans.

  166. But, the purposes of God.

  167. Rehoboam has determined and decreed.

  168. After all, he's the king, right?

  169. Well, let's look at verse 15.

  170. So the king did not listen to the people,

  171. for this turn of events was from the Lord

  172. to fulfill what the Lord had spoken

  173. to Jeroboam, son of Nebat,

  174. through Ahijah, the Shilonites.

  175. So again, let's ask the question,

  176. who made the decision

  177. not to listen to the people

  178. and treat them badly?

  179. Well, look closely at verse 15.

  180. So the king did not listen to the people,

  181. for or because

  182. this turn of events

  183. was from the Lord.

  184. Yes, Rehoboam sought advice.

  185. Yes, he made his choice.

  186. But God determined

  187. what should happen.

  188. You say, how can that be?

  189. Well, let's read on in verse 15.

  190. For this turn of events

  191. was from the Lord

  192. to fulfill the word

  193. the Lord had spoken

  194. to Jeroboam, son of Nebat,

  195. through Ahijah, the Shilonites.

  196. Well, what had God said?

  197. Well, have a look back

  198. to chapter 11

  199. and verse 29.

  200. Because there it's recorded for us

  201. what God had said

  202. through the prophet Ahijah

  203. to Jeroboam.

  204. We'll pick it up in verse 29.

  205. Solomon is still king

  206. at this point.

  207. Jeroboam had got sick

  208. and fed up

  209. with the latter reign of Solomon

  210. and the way he began

  211. treating the people

  212. and he had rebelled.

  213. So, verse 29.

  214. About that time,

  215. Jeroboam was going out

  216. of Jerusalem

  217. and Ahijah,

  218. the prophet of Shiloh,

  219. met him on the way

  220. wearing a new cloak.

  221. He'd obviously been to Debenhams

  222. to buy himself

  223. a nice new suit.

  224. So, the two of them

  225. were alone out in the country

  226. and Ahijah took hold

  227. of his nice new cloak

  228. he was wearing

  229. and he tore it

  230. into twelve pieces.

  231. Then he said to Jeroboam,

  232. take ten pieces

  233. for yourself,

  234. for this is what

  235. the Lord,

  236. the God of Israel,

  237. says.

  238. See,

  239. I am going to tear

  240. the kingdom

  241. out of Solomon's hand

  242. and give you

  243. ten tribes

  244. but for the sake

  245. of my servant

  246. David

  247. and the city

  248. of Jerusalem

  249. which I have chosen

  250. out of all of the tribes

  251. of Israel,

  252. he will have

  253. one tribe.

  254. So, it's crystal clear,

  255. isn't it?

  256. God had said

  257. that the kingdom

  258. would be divided,

  259. taken out of Solomon's hands.

  260. We're not told

  261. how that was going

  262. to happen

  263. but simply

  264. that it would happen.

  265. And God's purpose

  266. was that Jeroboam

  267. would have

  268. ten tribes

  269. and Rehoboam,

  270. Solomon's son,

  271. would only have

  272. one tribe.

  273. So, now

  274. as we begin

  275. to read chapter 12,

  276. we can see

  277. God's purposes

  278. being worked out.

  279. Rehoboam

  280. is completely

  281. unaware

  282. of what God

  283. had said

  284. to Jeroboam.

  285. He plans

  286. to crush

  287. the people

  288. but in crushing

  289. the people

  290. it leads

  291. to rebellion

  292. and the rebellion

  293. leads to

  294. division.

  295. You see,

  296. through Rehoboam's

  297. choice,

  298. God's purposes

  299. prevail.

  300. The plans

  301. of man

  302. always

  303. serve

  304. the purposes

  305. of God.

  306. Now, our government

  307. and the leaders

  308. of the world

  309. make choices

  310. and decisions

  311. all the time.

  312. But what I want

  313. us to be clear

  314. about is that

  315. they are only

  316. serving

  317. the greater

  318. purposes

  319. of God.

  320. It's not saying

  321. that every decision

  322. they make

  323. is good

  324. or right.

  325. Rehoboam's

  326. plans were

  327. clearly wrong

  328. in the way

  329. he treated

  330. the people

  331. and he will

  332. be held

  333. accountable

  334. just as

  335. every leader

  336. of this world

  337. will be held

  338. accountable.

  339. Just because

  340. they serve

  341. God's purposes

  342. doesn't mean

  343. to say

  344. they're off

  345. the hook.

  346. God's sovereignty

  347. never violates

  348. human responsibility.

  349. responsibility.

  350. We will all

  351. have to

  352. answer to

  353. God

  354. for the way

  355. we live

  356. the choices

  357. we make

  358. and our

  359. decisions.

  360. But this

  361. account in

  362. chapter 12

  363. is simply

  364. there to

  365. remind us

  366. that we

  367. are free

  368. to make

  369. decisions

  370. and our

  371. decisions

  372. whether they

  373. are right

  374. or wrong

  375. are always

  376. always

  377. determined

  378. by God.

  379. One author

  380. Dale Ralph

  381. Davis

  382. has put it

  383. so well.

  384. He says

  385. this,

  386. human choice

  387. never catches

  388. God by

  389. surprise.

  390. Contrary to

  391. our fears

  392. human decision

  393. making is not

  394. running loose

  395. but is on the

  396. leash

  397. of God's

  398. sovereignty.

  399. That means

  400. that nothing

  401. happens

  402. in this

  403. world

  404. and nothing

  405. happens

  406. in our

  407. lives

  408. without

  409. God's

  410. say so.

  411. More than

  412. that,

  413. every decision

  414. of a nation,

  415. every choice

  416. of an

  417. individual

  418. is ultimately

  419. decreed

  420. and determined

  421. by God

  422. for our

  423. good

  424. and for

  425. God's

  426. glory.

  427. The plans

  428. of man

  429. always

  430. serve

  431. the purposes

  432. of God.

  433. So,

  434. the plans

  435. of man

  436. serve the

  437. purposes

  438. of God.

  439. The second

  440. big thing

  441. we're going

  442. to look at,

  443. the plots

  444. of man

  445. surrender

  446. to the

  447. promises

  448. of God.

  449. You see,

  450. we must

  451. remember that

  452. verse 15

  453. is like

  454. inserted

  455. into the

  456. history.

  457. This is

  458. the author's

  459. interpretation.

  460. It's written

  461. for us,

  462. the reader,

  463. so that we

  464. can get the

  465. big picture

  466. of what's

  467. going on.

  468. It's history

  469. from God's

  470. perspective.

  471. For Rehoboam,

  472. he obviously

  473. didn't have

  474. one kings

  475. to read

  476. and he

  477. certainly

  478. doesn't know

  479. about verse

  480. 15,

  481. so he

  482. just continues

  483. to plan

  484. and to

  485. plot.

  486. Not

  487. surprisingly,

  488. verse 16,

  489. when all

  490. the people

  491. saw that

  492. the king

  493. refused to

  494. listen to

  495. them,

  496. they answered

  497. the king,

  498. what share

  499. do we have

  500. in David?

  501. What part

  502. in Jesse's

  503. son?

  504. To your

  505. tents,

  506. Israel,

  507. let's get

  508. out of

  509. here,

  510. we don't

  511. want this

  512. king anymore.

  513. Look

  514. after your

  515. own house,

  516. David.

  517. So the

  518. Israelites

  519. went home.

  520. they're

  521. rebelling,

  522. they don't

  523. want this

  524. king.

  525. And as

  526. far as

  527. Rehoboam

  528. is concerned,

  529. this rebellion

  530. needs to be

  531. squashed and

  532. quickly.

  533. So,

  534. verse 18,

  535. King Rehoboam

  536. sent out

  537. Adoniram,

  538. who was in

  539. charge of

  540. the forced

  541. labour.

  542. Here is the

  543. one to

  544. implement the

  545. king's

  546. decree,

  547. to restore

  548. order,

  549. to fling

  550. those whips

  551. and get those

  552. people in

  553. line.

  554. But,

  555. verse 18,

  556. all Israel

  557. stoned him

  558. to death.

  559. King

  560. Rehoboam,

  561. however,

  562. managed to

  563. get into

  564. his chariot

  565. and escape

  566. to Jerusalem.

  567. He wasn't

  568. going to

  569. hang around

  570. for any

  571. questioning.

  572. So Israel

  573. has been

  574. in rebellion

  575. against the

  576. house of

  577. David to

  578. this day,

  579. to the

  580. time that

  581. it was

  582. written.

  583. So the

  584. kingdom

  585. divided

  586. just as

  587. God had

  588. said.

  589. Jeroboam

  590. takes off

  591. with ten

  592. tribes,

  593. and Rehoboam

  594. was left

  595. with only

  596. one tribe.

  597. But Rehoboam

  598. is not

  599. happy.

  600. He wants

  601. it all.

  602. This is

  603. his kingdom.

  604. So he

  605. begins to

  606. plot,

  607. verse 21.

  608. When Rehoboam

  609. arrived in

  610. Jerusalem,

  611. he mustered

  612. all Judah

  613. and the

  614. tribe of

  615. Benjamin.

  616. So Judah

  617. and Benjamin,

  618. when it's

  619. written,

  620. is always

  621. formed as

  622. one tribe

  623. or speaks

  624. as one

  625. tribe,

  626. the tribe

  627. of Judah.

  628. So he

  629. gathers

  630. together

  631. 180,000

  632. able young

  633. men to

  634. go to

  635. war against

  636. Israel and

  637. regain the

  638. kingdom for

  639. Rehoboam,

  640. son of

  641. Solomon.

  642. So now it

  643. seems we're

  644. faced with

  645. two competing

  646. forces.

  647. We have

  648. Rehoboam's

  649. plot to

  650. take back

  651. all the

  652. tribes for

  653. himself and

  654. to have

  655. the kingdom

  656. to himself.

  657. And then we

  658. also have on

  659. the other

  660. side God's

  661. promise that

  662. well Jeroboam

  663. would have

  664. ten tribes

  665. and he

  666. would only

  667. have one.

  668. So what's

  669. going to

  670. happen?

  671. Well,

  672. not only are

  673. there the

  674. plots of

  675. man,

  676. there is the

  677. promise of

  678. God.

  679. You see as

  680. Rehoboam

  681. begins his

  682. plotting and

  683. his scheming,

  684. God's word

  685. rules.

  686. Verse 22,

  687. but this

  688. word of

  689. God came

  690. to Shemaiah,

  691. the man of

  692. God, this

  693. is another

  694. prophet,

  695. say to

  696. Rehoboam,

  697. son of

  698. Solomon,

  699. king of

  700. Judah,

  701. to all

  702. Judah and

  703. Benjamin and

  704. to the rest

  705. of the

  706. people,

  707. this is

  708. what the

  709. Lord says,

  710. do not

  711. go up to

  712. fight against

  713. your brothers

  714. the Israelites,

  715. go home

  716. every one

  717. of you,

  718. for this

  719. is my

  720. doing.

  721. You see,

  722. God is now

  723. letting

  724. Rehoboam

  725. in on the

  726. big picture,

  727. isn't he?

  728. What we've

  729. known all

  730. the way

  731. along,

  732. because God's

  733. word had

  734. decreed it

  735. and God's

  736. word had

  737. said,

  738. Rehoboam

  739. now begins

  740. to see

  741. what God

  742. is decreeing

  743. and what

  744. God wants.

  745. This is

  746. my doing,

  747. says God.

  748. This is

  749. my plan.

  750. I ultimately

  751. decide and

  752. decree what

  753. will happen.

  754. I promised

  755. that Rehoboam

  756. would get

  757. these ten

  758. tribes and

  759. that you

  760. would only

  761. get one.

  762. I mean,

  763. let's think

  764. about it.

  765. If Rehoboam

  766. did go up

  767. and fight

  768. against

  769. Rehoboam,

  770. there was

  771. only ever

  772. going to

  773. be one

  774. winner,

  775. wasn't

  776. there?

  777. Do the

  778. maths.

  779. Ten

  780. tribes

  781. versus one

  782. tribe.

  783. Who's

  784. going to

  785. win?

  786. If

  787. Rehoboam

  788. went off

  789. to fight,

  790. he would

  791. have ended

  792. up with

  793. no

  794. kingdom.

  795. But you

  796. see,

  797. God had

  798. promised,

  799. God had

  800. promised

  801. Rehoboam's

  802. grandfather

  803. David,

  804. that there

  805. would always

  806. be one

  807. tribe,

  808. one

  809. people,

  810. that God

  811. would preserve

  812. because from

  813. that one

  814. tribe of

  815. Judah

  816. would come

  817. God's

  818. promised

  819. king,

  820. Jesus

  821. Christ.

  822. So God

  823. ensures that

  824. his promise

  825. remains.

  826. The plots

  827. of man

  828. always

  829. surrender

  830. to the

  831. promises

  832. of God.

  833. Now how

  834. does Rehoboam

  835. respond to

  836. what God

  837. has decreed?

  838. Well look at

  839. the end of

  840. verse 24.

  841. So they

  842. obeyed the

  843. word of the

  844. Lord and went

  845. home again

  846. as the

  847. Lord had

  848. ordered.

  849. Rehoboam

  850. surrenders to

  851. God's word.

  852. After all his

  853. planning and

  854. plotting,

  855. he submits.

  856. It may come a

  857. surprise to us

  858. because that's

  859. not how we

  860. started out,

  861. but it's a

  862. reminder of

  863. how we should

  864. all respond.

  865. We can fight

  866. God all we

  867. like,

  868. but we will

  869. not win.

  870. God will

  871. see that his

  872. word is

  873. fulfilled,

  874. because the

  875. plots of

  876. man always

  877. surrender to

  878. the promises

  879. of God.

  880. Of course

  881. it's true that

  882. men and

  883. women have

  884. always planned

  885. and plotted to

  886. do their own

  887. thing, haven't

  888. we?

  889. We ignore

  890. God and we

  891. live as if

  892. we're the

  893. king.

  894. This is my

  895. world,

  896. my life,

  897. my money.

  898. I will

  899. decide what

  900. I will

  901. do.

  902. In fact,

  903. if there's

  904. any threat

  905. to our

  906. sovereignty,

  907. any threat

  908. to our

  909. self-rule,

  910. we will

  911. fight it.

  912. Nobody will

  913. tell me what

  914. to do.

  915. Isn't that

  916. what happened

  917. when God's

  918. king,

  919. Jesus Christ,

  920. came?

  921. Turn with me

  922. please to

  923. Acts chapter

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  924. 2.

  925. Acts chapter

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  926. 2 in the

  927. New Testament.

  928. So,

  929. Acts chapter

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  930. 2 is,

  931. well,

  932. Jesus has

  933. already died,

  934. he is risen

  935. again,

  936. he has poured

  937. out his

  938. Holy Spirit

  939. and Peter

  940. is preaching

  941. to all the

  942. people who

  943. have gathered.

  944. And he

  945. gets to

  946. the heart

  947. of his

  948. message in

  949. verse 22.

  950. So,

  951. Peter is

  952. preaching,

  953. fellow

  954. Israelites,

  955. listen to

  956. this,

  957. Jesus of

  958. Nazareth

  959. was a

  960. man accredited

  961. by God

  962. to you

  963. by miracles,

  964. wonders and

  965. signs which

  966. God did

  967. among you

  968. through him

  969. as you

  970. yourselves

  971. know.

  972. All these

  973. miracles that

  974. Jesus did,

  975. all the

  976. signs,

  977. proves that

  978. Jesus is

  979. God's

  980. King,

  981. the one

  982. with absolute

  983. power and

  984. supreme

  985. authority.

  986. The problem

  987. is people

  988. don't like

  989. that.

  990. It's a

  991. threat to

  992. their self

  993. rule,

  994. so what

  995. do they

  996. do?

  997. Verse 23,

  998. this man

  999. was handed

  1000. over to you

  1001. by God's

  1002. deliberate

  1003. plan and

  1004. foreknowledge

  1005. and you

  1006. with the

  1007. help of

  1008. wicked men

  1009. put him

  1010. to death

  1011. by nailing

  1012. him to

  1013. the cross.

  1014. So,

  1015. who killed

  1016. Jesus?

  1017. Jesus?

  1018. Who planned

  1019. and decided

  1020. that Jesus

  1021. would die?

  1022. Well,

  1023. this verse

  1024. is telling

  1025. us that,

  1026. well,

  1027. they chose

  1028. to kill

  1029. Jesus.

  1030. They wanted

  1031. rid of

  1032. him.

  1033. But look

  1034. what it

  1035. says at the

  1036. beginning of

  1037. verse 23,

  1038. this man

  1039. was handed

  1040. over to

  1041. you by

  1042. God's

  1043. deliberate

  1044. plan and

  1045. foreknowledge.

  1046. God's

  1047. marriage.

  1048. You see,

  1049. their plans

  1050. to kill

  1051. Jesus

  1052. only served

  1053. the greater

  1054. purposes of

  1055. God.

  1056. Let's read

  1057. on,

  1058. verse 24,

  1059. but God

  1060. raised him

  1061. from the

  1062. dead,

  1063. freeing him

  1064. from the

  1065. agony of

  1066. death,

  1067. because it

  1068. was impossible

  1069. for death

  1070. to keep

  1071. its hold

  1072. on him.

  1073. You see,

  1074. we can't

  1075. fight

  1076. God.

  1077. We will

  1078. never defeat

  1079. him.

  1080. His purpose

  1081. to bring

  1082. salvation

  1083. through his

  1084. death and

  1085. his promise

  1086. to give

  1087. life through

  1088. his

  1089. resurrection

  1090. will prevail.

  1091. No one

  1092. can stand

  1093. against God's

  1094. promises and

  1095. God's

  1096. purposes.

  1097. Verse 36,

  1098. as he gets

  1099. to the

  1100. conclusion of

  1101. his sermon,

  1102. Therefore,

  1103. let all

  1104. Israel be

  1105. assured of

  1106. this,

  1107. God has

  1108. made this

  1109. Jesus,

  1110. whom you

  1111. crucified,

  1112. both Lord

  1113. and Messiah.

  1114. Jesus is

  1115. the risen

  1116. victorious

  1117. king,

  1118. who rules

  1119. over every

  1120. decision,

  1121. who determines

  1122. every act.

  1123. This is the

  1124. king who

  1125. planned his

  1126. own death

  1127. and plots

  1128. his own

  1129. resurrection

  1130. from before

  1131. time began.

  1132. The king

  1133. whose purposes

  1134. will not be

  1135. foiled,

  1136. and whose

  1137. promises will

  1138. never,

  1139. ever fail.

  1140. And how

  1141. are we to

  1142. respond to

  1143. such a

  1144. king as

  1145. this?

  1146. Verse 38,

  1147. Peter replied,

  1148. repent and

  1149. be baptized,

  1150. every one

  1151. of you,

  1152. in the name

  1153. of Jesus

  1154. Christ for

  1155. the forgiveness

  1156. of your

  1157. sins,

  1158. and you

  1159. will receive

  1160. the gift

  1161. of the

  1162. Holy Spirit.

  1163. The promise

  1164. is for you

  1165. and for your

  1166. children and

  1167. for all who

  1168. are far off,

  1169. for all whom

  1170. the Lord,

  1171. the God,

  1172. will call.

  1173. Surrender

  1174. to the

  1175. king who

  1176. died for

  1177. you.

  1178. Submit to

  1179. the king

  1180. who's

  1181. defeated

  1182. death for

  1183. you.

  1184. Do not

  1185. fight this

  1186. king,

  1187. but let us

  1188. live under

  1189. his sovereign

  1190. word.

  1191. Of course,

  1192. people still

  1193. fight against

  1194. God's king.

  1195. They will

  1196. not recognize

  1197. his rule,

  1198. and they will

  1199. fight against

  1200. you if you

  1201. are his

  1202. people.

  1203. Have a look

  1204. at Acts

    Acts 4 chapter mention

  1205. chapter 4.

  1206. Not long

  1207. after this

  1208. sermon,

  1209. Peter is

  1210. thrown in

  1211. prison for

  1212. preaching.

  1213. It seems

  1214. that those

  1215. who were

  1216. against Jesus

  1217. are also

  1218. against his

  1219. people.

  1220. But Peter

  1221. is released,

  1222. and we pick

  1223. it up in

  1224. verse 23.

  1225. On their

  1226. release,

  1227. Peter and

  1228. John went

  1229. back to their

  1230. own people

  1231. and reported

  1232. all that the

  1233. chief priests

  1234. and the

  1235. elders had

  1236. said to

  1237. them,

  1238. they had

  1239. said,

  1240. stop talking

  1241. about this

  1242. Jesus,

  1243. we don't

  1244. want you

  1245. to do it

  1246. anymore.

  1247. When they

  1248. heard this,

  1249. they raised

  1250. their voices

  1251. together in

  1252. prayer to

  1253. God.

  1254. Let's look

  1255. how they

  1256. prayed.

  1257. Sovereign

  1258. Lord,

  1259. they said,

  1260. you made

  1261. the heavens

  1262. and the

  1263. earth and

  1264. the sea

  1265. and everything

  1266. in them.

  1267. Verse 27,

  1268. indeed,

  1269. Herod and

  1270. Pontius Pilate

  1271. met together

  1272. with the

  1273. Gentiles and

  1274. the people

  1275. of Israel

  1276. in the city

  1277. to conspire

  1278. against your

  1279. holy servant

  1280. Jesus whom

  1281. you anointed.

  1282. They did

  1283. what your

  1284. power and

  1285. will had

  1286. decided

  1287. beforehand

  1288. should happen.

  1289. You see,

  1290. nothing can

  1291. stand in the

  1292. way of God's

  1293. purposes in

  1294. God's

  1295. plans.

  1296. And what

  1297. about these

  1298. people who

  1299. are now

  1300. threatened?

  1301. Well,

  1302. they cry

  1303. out to

  1304. the

  1305. sovereign

  1306. God who

  1307. is Lord

  1308. over every

  1309. ruler and

  1310. they remind

  1311. themselves that

  1312. even the

  1313. death of

  1314. Jesus and

  1315. the resurrection

  1316. of Jesus is

  1317. all part of

  1318. God's wonderful

  1319. plan.

  1320. Verse 29,

  1321. now Lord,

  1322. consider their

  1323. threats and

  1324. enable your

  1325. servants to

  1326. speak your

  1327. word with

  1328. great boldness.

  1329. Stretch out

  1330. your hand and

  1331. heal and

  1332. perform signs

  1333. and wonders

  1334. through the

  1335. name of

  1336. your holy

  1337. servant Jesus.
