  1. So, what is happening in the world?

  2. Is Britain leaving or staying?

  3. Are we going to get another referendum?

  4. Will Russia engage in war with the rest of Europe as they provoke Ukraine?

  5. And what about Iran?

  6. Will they become a world power as they develop their nuclear weapons?

  7. And what about the wars in Yemen and Syria?

  8. It seems that the conflicts there are getting worse, not better.

  9. Or what about the thousands of people that are waiting on the Mexican-US border?

  10. Or the tens of thousands around the world without homes?

  11. Or the 10,000 homeless people in this country?

  12. Turn on any news program and you will not be short on opinion or solution.

  13. What in the world is happening?

  14. Well, 1 Kings chapter 15 to 16 show us what is happening in the world.

    1 Kings 15 chapter mention

  15. These two chapters cover roughly 60 years and introduce us to no less than eight different kings.

  16. But this is no chronicle of events.

  17. This is history from God's perspective.

  18. What we see here is not isolated to the past.

  19. Rather, it is a picture that speaks about the present.

  20. 1 Kings 15 to 16 shows us what is going on in the world.

  21. Three things we see that are going on in the world from our text this morning.

  22. First, we see that the world is in dark decline.

  23. Sociologists will tell us that we are brighter, faster, stronger than at any other point in history.

  24. But that's not how God sees it.

  25. After Solomon died, as we were looking at in the last couple of weeks, the great kingdom divided into two.

  26. We had Jeroboam, who was the king of Israel in the north, and Rehoboam, the king in the south, which was Judah.

  27. Their relationship is summarized in chapter 14, verse 30.

  28. Have a look at chapter 14, verse 30.

  29. There was continual warfare between Rehoboam and Jeroboam.

  30. And that seems to set the tone for what's to come.

  31. Another eight kings follow.

  32. And if you just look at the headings, just to get an idea of where we're going,

  33. we've got two kings in Judah.

  34. Abijah, king of Judah, chapter 15.

  35. Next heading down, we've got Asa, king of Judah.

  36. And then we've got six consecutive kings in Israel.

  37. All the way through from Nabab, all the way to Ahab at the end of chapter 16.

  38. And it's a history that spirals into dark decline.

  39. Abijah, the first king that we meet in chapter 15,

  40. is king for three war-torn years.

  41. Nadab, the first king of Israel, well, he only lasts two years,

  42. having been knocked off by internal rivalry.

  43. Elah, which we meet in chapter 16,

  44. he seems to spend most of his time getting drunk,

  45. and lasts only two years, disposed by a military coup.

  46. And after him, we meet Zimri.

  47. He only manages seven days.

  48. And rather be overthrown, he decides to set himself on fire.

  49. It's hardly peaceful or stable.

  50. Instead of things getting better,

  51. they appear to be getting worse.

  52. Look at how it is summarised for us at the end.

  53. Chapter 16, verse 25.

  54. But Omri did evil in the eyes of the Lord,

  55. and sinned more than all those before him.

  56. And if that was bad enough,

  57. just have a look down at verse 30.

  58. The next king.

  59. Ahab, son of Omri, did more evil in the eyes of the Lord

  60. than any of those before him.

  61. Verse 33.

  62. Ahab also made an Asherah pole

  63. and did more to arouse the anger of the Lord,

  64. the God of Israel,

  65. than did all the kings of Israel before him.

  66. You see, the pattern of man is not onwards and upwards,

  67. but backwards and downwards.

  68. The world is in dark decline.

  69. You see, we can take great pride in our achievements.

  70. If you've been watching the news,

  71. we can now send robots to planet Mars,

  72. 225 million kilometres away.

  73. Driverless cars are no longer the stuff of science fiction.

  74. We've conducted organ transplants

  75. and limb replacements.

  76. In the past 100 years,

  77. the average life expectancy of the world

  78. has gone from 31 to 71.

  79. We've developed electricity,

  80. skyscrapers,

  81. we have the internet.

  82. We are better educated and more sophisticated

  83. than ever before in all of history.

  84. But let's think again.

  85. In Yemen,

  86. 130 children die every day

  87. due to the ongoing war.

  88. Of the 28 population,

  89. 28 million population of that country,

  90. 3.5 million have had to flee their homes.

  91. Just try and get that into your head.

  92. In Syria,

  93. almost 500,000 have died

  94. or are presumed dead

  95. due to the genocide that is taking place there.

  96. Over half the population,

  97. that is 11 million people,

  98. have been displaced from their own homes.

  99. Today,

  100. 40.3 million live in various forms of slavery,

  101. bonded labour,

  102. sex trafficking,

  103. forced marriages,

  104. children as young as eight.

  105. 2.3 billion

  106. of the world's population

  107. have no access to basic sanitation,

  108. which results in 5.5 million children

  109. under the age of five

  110. every year

  111. dying from preventable disease.

  112. The world is in dark decline.

  113. Rather than getting better,

  114. we are getting worse.

  115. How did it get to be like this?

  116. It seems that we follow on this same pattern.

  117. We just do more and more evil

  118. in the eyes of the Lord.

  119. Well, we're given two reasons

  120. as to why this dark decline.

  121. First,

  122. worthless idols.

  123. Go back to chapter 14.

  124. The problem

  125. stems

  126. from the worship

  127. of idols.

  128. So, in chapter 14,

  129. verse 9,

  130. Abijah,

  131. the prophet,

  132. is speaking to

  133. Jeroboam,

  134. who is king of Israel,

  135. and he says to him,

  136. verse 9,

  137. you have done more evil

  138. than all who lived

  139. before you.

  140. You have made for yourself

  141. other gods,

  142. idols made of metal.

  143. You have aroused my anger

  144. and turned your back on me.

  145. Idols are God's substitutes.

  146. We remove God

  147. and we replace God

  148. with our own gods.

  149. In other words,

  150. as it says at the end of verse 14,

  151. you've turned your back on me.

  152. The God who made us,

  153. the God who loves us,

  154. who's designed us,

  155. and has put this universe together,

  156. has been pushed out.

  157. We decide what is best

  158. and what is right for us.

  159. In our ignorance,

  160. we think we can run our lives

  161. in the world without God.

  162. But look at how the author

  163. describes our God replacements.

  164. Chapter 16,

  165. the end of verse 13,

  166. they're described as

  167. worthless idols.

  168. idols.

  169. Idols.

  170. Idols.

  171. The gods that we replace

  172. the true God with

  173. are empty

  174. and powerless.

  175. Worthless.

  176. despite all of these kings

  177. coming to power

  178. and their kingship

  179. over great nations,

  180. well, what happens?

  181. All the kings died

  182. and they're just replaced

  183. by another king.

  184. All that they managed to gain,

  185. all their conquering of lands

  186. and of great wealth

  187. that they put together,

  188. all get stripped away

  189. and it's all passed on

  190. to somebody else.

  191. In fact,

  192. with each king,

  193. the kingdom they leave

  194. is in a worse state

  195. than which they received it.

  196. You see,

  197. replacing God

  198. will never ever

  199. make the world

  200. a better place.

  201. It only leads

  202. to dark

  203. decline.

  204. But there's another reason

  205. apart from

  206. worthless idols

  207. and that is

  208. this futile legacy.

  209. Jeroboam's legacy

  210. was clear.

  211. It did not end well.

  212. He started

  213. this whole pattern

  214. of setting up

  215. other gods.

  216. But it doesn't seem

  217. to stop

  218. his successors.

  219. So look at

  220. chapter 15

  221. verse 25.

  222. Nadab,

  223. son of Jeroboam,

  224. became king of Israel

  225. in the second year

  226. of Asa,

  227. king of Judah

  228. and he reigned

  229. over Israel

  230. for two years.

  231. What was he like?

  232. Well,

  233. he did evil

  234. in the eyes

  235. of the Lord.

  236. Following the ways

  237. of his father

  238. and committing

  239. the same sin

  240. his father

  241. had caused

  242. Israel to commit.

  243. Would things

  244. get better?

  245. Well,

  246. look at verse 34.

  247. Here we're

  248. introduced to

  249. Basha.

  250. the next king.

  251. And he did evil

  252. in the eyes

  253. of the Lord

  254. following the ways

  255. of Jeroboam

  256. who committed

  257. the same sin

  258. Jeroboam had

  259. caused Israel

  260. to commit.

  261. And we can read on

  262. chapter 16

  263. verse 19.

  264. Here we have

  265. Zimri.

  266. Zimri.

  267. And he committed

  268. evil.

  269. Doing evil

  270. in the eyes

  271. of the Lord

  272. and following

  273. the ways

  274. of Jeroboam

  275. and committing

  276. the same sin

  277. Jeroboam had

  278. caused Israel

  279. to commit.

  280. And if we

  281. haven't quite

  282. put it together,

  283. look at Ahab

  284. at the end

  285. of chapter 16

  286. verse 31.

  287. He not only

  288. considered it

  289. trivial to

  290. commit the sins

  291. of Jeroboam

  292. son of Nebat,

  293. but he also

  294. married Jezebel,

  295. daughter of

  296. Ethbaal,

  297. king of the

  298. Sidonians,

  299. and he began

  300. to serve

  301. Baal

  302. and worship

  303. him.

  304. Not only

  305. is it sad,

  306. it is so,

  307. so tragic.

  308. They could

  309. not see

  310. the tragedy

  311. of the sin

  312. of their

  313. fathers and

  314. they just

  315. followed blindly

  316. down the same

  317. tragic path.

  318. And isn't

  319. that what we

  320. just see

  321. happening in

  322. our world

  323. today?

  324. Generation

  325. after generation

  326. walking down

  327. the same path.

  328. Doing what

  329. their fathers

  330. have done.

  331. Removing

  332. God and

  333. replacing God

  334. with our own

  335. laws and our

  336. own desires.

  337. As a

  338. society,

  339. we've moved

  340. on from God.

  341. We've been

  342. there,

  343. we've done

  344. that,

  345. and we are

  346. not going

  347. back.

  348. After all,

  349. we know

  350. what's best,

  351. don't we?

  352. We know

  353. how to make

  354. the world

  355. good and

  356. beautiful.

  357. We have

  358. wonderful things

  359. like abortion

  360. and euthanasia

  361. and drone

  362. missiles

  363. bombing at

  364. will.

  365. What a

  366. good and

  367. beautiful world

  368. we have

  369. made.

  370. be careful

  371. of worthless

  372. idols,

  373. their futile

  374. legacy.

  375. It leaves

  376. the world

  377. broken

  378. and destroyed.

  379. so as we

  380. look at

  381. 1 Kings

  382. 15 and

  383. 16,

  384. we see

  385. what is

  386. happening

  387. in the

  388. world.

  389. There's a

  390. dark

  391. decline,

  392. but we

  393. also see

  394. that there

  395. is a

  396. sovereign

  397. Lord.

  398. The author

  399. carefully

  400. recounts

  401. history for

  402. us.

  403. We're just

  404. taking kind

  405. of some

  406. big themes

  407. out of

  408. these chapters,

  409. so we're

  410. going backwards

  411. and forwards,

  412. keep with

  413. me.

  414. So chapter

  415. 15,

  416. verse 1,

  417. in the

  418. 18th year

  419. of the

  420. reign of

  421. Jeroboam,

  422. son of

  423. Nebat,

  424. Abijah

  425. became king

  426. of Judah.

  427. Verse 8,

  428. and Abijah

  429. rested with

  430. his ancestors

  431. and was

  432. buried in

  433. the city

  434. of David

  435. and Asa,

  436. his son,

  437. succeeded

  438. him as

  439. king.

  440. Verse 9,

  441. in the

  442. twentieth

  443. year of

  444. Jeroboam,

  445. king of

  446. Israel,

  447. Asa

  448. became king

  449. of Judah.

  450. Verse 24,

  451. then Asa

  452. rested with

  453. his ancestors

  454. and he

  455. was buried

  456. with them

  457. in the

  458. city of

  459. his father

  460. David.

  461. Chapter

  462. 16,

  463. verse 8,

  464. In the

  465. twenty-sixth

  466. year of

  467. Asa,

  468. king of

  469. Judah,

  470. Elah,

  471. son of

  472. Basha,

  473. became king

  474. of Israel

  475. and he

  476. reigned in

  477. Tirzah

  478. for two

  479. years.

  480. Verse 14,

  481. As for the

  482. other events

  483. of Elah's

  484. reign and

  485. all he

  486. did,

  487. are they

  488. not written

  489. in the

  490. books of

  491. the annals

  492. of the

  493. kings of

  494. Israel?

  495. I think

  496. we get the

  497. pattern here,

  498. don't we?

  499. Kings come

  500. and kings

  501. go.

  502. They live

  503. and they

  504. die.

  505. But their

  506. rise and

  507. their fall

  508. are all

  509. overseen

  510. by the

  511. sovereign

  512. Lord.

  513. First

  514. ruling

  515. word.

  516. While kings

  517. plot and

  518. plan,

  519. God

  520. rules.

  521. Look at

  522. what God

  523. says to

  524. Jeroboam

  525. through the

  526. prophet

  527. Ahijah

  528. back in

  529. chapter 14.

  530. God has

  531. seen,

  532. God has

  533. watched as

  534. Jeroboam

  535. has done

  536. his own

  537. thing.

  538. He has

  539. seen the

  540. evil he

  541. has done

  542. by making

  543. up these

  544. God

  545. replacements

  546. and God

  547. has something

  548. to say to

  549. him.

  550. Verse 14,

  551. chapter 14,

  552. The Lord

  553. will raise

  554. up for

  555. himself a

  556. king over

  557. Israel who

  558. will cut

  559. off the

  560. family of

  561. Jeroboam.

  562. Even now

  563. this is

  564. beginning to

  565. happen.

  566. verse 16,

  567. And he

  568. will give

  569. Israel up

  570. because of

  571. the sins

  572. of Jeroboam

  573. has committed

  574. and has

  575. caused

  576. Israel to

  577. commit.

  578. So God

  579. has said

  580. Jeroboam

  581. and his

  582. whole family

  583. are going

  584. to be

  585. wiped out.

  586. Now look

  587. at chapter

  588. 15,

  589. verse 28.

  590. Here we

  591. see the

  592. rise of

  593. another

  594. king,

  595. Basha,

  596. who killed

  597. Nadab

  598. in the

  599. third year

  600. of Asa,

  601. king of

  602. Judah,

  603. and Basha

  604. succeeded him

  605. as king.

  606. And what

  607. did he do

  608. when he

  609. became king?

  610. As soon

  611. as he

  612. began to

  613. reign,

  614. he killed

  615. Jeroboam's

  616. whole family.

  617. He did

  618. not leave

  619. Jeroboam

  620. anyone that

  621. breathed,

  622. but destroyed

  623. them all.

  624. Why?

  625. According

  626. to the

  627. word of

  628. the Lord

  629. given

  630. through his

  631. servant

  632. Ahijah,

  633. the

  634. Shalonite.

  635. God's

  636. word

  637. is

  638. ruling.

  639. Now,

  640. just because

  641. Basha moves

  642. in and

  643. destroys

  644. Jeroboam,

  645. that doesn't

  646. mean to

  647. say that

  648. Basha is

  649. now off

  650. the hook.

  651. Have a

  652. look at

  653. chapter 16,

  654. verse 7.

  655. Moreover,

  656. the word

  657. of the

  658. Lord came

  659. through the

  660. prophet Jehu,

  661. son of

  662. Hanani,

  663. to Basha

  664. and his

  665. house,

  666. because of

  667. all the

  668. evil he

  669. had done

  670. in the

  671. eyes of

  672. the

  673. Lord,

  674. arousing

  675. his anger

  676. by the

  677. things he

  678. did,

  679. becoming

  680. like the

  681. house of

  682. Jeroboam,

  683. and also

  684. because he

  685. destroyed it.

  686. Verse 11,

  687. another king

  688. comes to

  689. power,

  690. and as

  691. soon as

  692. he began

  693. to reign,

  694. this is

  695. Zimri,

  696. as soon as

  697. he began

  698. to reign

  699. and was

  700. seated on

  701. the throne,

  702. he killed

  703. off Basha's

  704. whole family.

  705. He did

  706. not spare

  707. a single

  708. male,

  709. whether

  710. relative or

  711. friend,

  712. Zimri

  713. destroyed the

  714. whole family

  715. of Basha.

  716. Why?

  717. In

  718. accordance

  719. with the

  720. word of

  721. the Lord,

  722. God had

  723. spoken against

  724. Basha through

  725. the prophet

  726. Jehu.

  727. Kings may

  728. reign,

  729. but they

  730. are always

  731. under the

  732. sovereign rule

  733. of God's

  734. word.

  735. In fact,

  736. what God

  737. says will

  738. always come

  739. to pass.

  740. Have a look

  741. at chapter

  742. 16,

  743. verse 34.

  744. In

  745. Ahab's

  746. time,

  747. heel of

  748. Bethel

  749. rebuilt

  750. Jericho.

  751. Now,

  752. we'll

  753. remember

  754. Jericho

  755. from the

  756. past,

  757. about 400

  758. years before

  759. these events

  760. that we're

  761. reading in

  762. 1 Kings.

  763. God's

  764. people came

  765. out of

  766. slavery and

  767. into the

  768. promised land.

  769. The first

  770. city they

  771. came up

  772. against was

  773. Jericho,

  774. a pagan

  775. city,

  776. which they

  777. destroyed.

  778. And God

  779. said very,

  780. very clearly,

  781. we can see

  782. it on the

  783. screen,

  784. God spoke

  785. through

  786. Jeremiah at

  787. that time,

  788. he said,

  789. at that time

  790. Joshua pronounced

  791. this solemn

  792. oath,

  793. cursed before

  794. the Lord

  795. is the one

  796. who undertakes

  797. to rebuild

  798. this city,

  799. Jericho.

  800. At the cost

  801. of his

  802. firstborn son,

  803. he will lay

  804. its foundations.

  805. At the cost

  806. of his

  807. youngest,

  808. he will set

  809. up its

  810. gates.

  811. Now read

  812. the rest

  813. of verse

  814. 34.

  815. Let's read

  816. it again.

  817. In Ahab's

  818. time,

  819. Heel of

  820. Bethel

  821. rebuilt

  822. Jericho.

  823. He laid

  824. its foundations

  825. at the cost

  826. of his

  827. firstborn son,

  828. Abiram,

  829. and he set

  830. up its gates

  831. at the cost

  832. of his

  833. youngest son,

  834. Segub.

  835. Why?

  836. It's in

  837. accordance with

  838. the word

  839. of the

  840. Lord spoken

  841. by Joshua,

  842. son of

  843. Nun.

  844. Centuries

  845. may have

  846. passed,

  847. but when

  848. God speaks

  849. his word,

  850. it is always

  851. active and it

  852. is always

  853. powerful,

  854. and it will

  855. always accomplish

  856. what he has

  857. set out to

  858. do.

  859. God rules

  860. over the

  861. nations

  862. and over the

  863. kings of this

  864. world

  865. by his

  866. word.

  867. God

  868. and isn't

  869. this the

  870. same God

  871. that rules

  872. by his

  873. sovereign

  874. word today?

  875. Remember

  876. what God

  877. said to

  878. the prophet

  879. Isaiah?

  880. You can

  881. follow on

  882. the screen.

  883. He,

  884. that's God,

  885. sits enthroned

  886. above the

  887. circle of

  888. the earth

  889. and its

  890. people are

  891. like

  892. grasshoppers.

  893. He brings

  894. princes to

  895. naught,

  896. reduces the

  897. rulers of

  898. this world

  899. to nothing.

  900. No sooner

  901. are they

  902. planted,

  903. no sooner

  904. are they

  905. sown,

  906. no sooner

  907. do they

  908. take root

  909. in the

  910. ground,

  911. then he

  912. blows in

  913. them and

  914. they wither

  915. and the

  916. whirlwind

  917. sweeps

  918. them away

  919. like

  920. chaff.

  921. Every

  922. leader,

  923. every

  924. president,

  925. every

  926. Taoiseach

  927. is in

  928. the hands

  929. of God.

  930. No one

  931. gets to

  932. be ruler

  933. without

  934. God's

  935. say-so.

  936. And when

  937. they fall

  938. away,

  939. it is

  940. simply

  941. at

  942. God's

  943. command.

  944. Now that

  945. of course

  946. raises all

  947. kinds of

  948. questions for

  949. us.

  950. If God

  951. is sovereign,

  952. then why

  953. does he

  954. let Syria's

  955. president

  956. Bashar

  957. al-Assad

  958. carry on

  959. the genocide

  960. like he

  961. is?

  962. Or why

  963. does God

  964. allow America

  965. to sell

  966. arms to

  967. the Saudis

  968. so that

  969. they can

  970. go and

  971. bomb the

  972. life out

  973. of Yemen?

  974. Well,

  975. these things

  976. may concern

  977. us,

  978. and rightly

  979. so,

  980. but as we

  981. think about

  982. these hard

  983. questions,

  984. let us

  985. not forget

  986. there is

  987. only one

  988. sovereign

  989. king and

  990. one sovereign

  991. lord who

  992. holds every

  993. nation and

  994. every leader

  995. to account,

  996. who can

  997. use their

  998. evil ways

  999. to accomplish

  1000. his purposes.

  1001. Everyone

  1002. is accountable.

  1003. Everyone

  1004. will be

  1005. responsible

  1006. to God.

  1007. The world

  1008. may look

  1009. like it's

  1010. in freefall

  1011. descending

  1012. into dark

  1013. decline,

  1014. but let

  1015. us be

  1016. sure of

  1017. this,

  1018. God is

  1019. in supreme

  1020. control of

  1021. all things

  1022. and all

  1023. people.

  1024. So,

  1025. we see

  1026. that the

  1027. world

  1028. is in

  1029. dark

  1030. decline,

  1031. we see

  1032. that there

  1033. is a

  1034. sovereign

  1035. lord,

  1036. and in

  1037. the midst

  1038. of it

  1039. all,

  1040. there is

  1041. greater

  1042. grace.

  1043. It all

  1044. appears very

  1045. depressing,

  1046. but not

  1047. all is

  1048. doom and

  1049. gloom,

  1050. because in

  1051. the midst

  1052. of darkness

  1053. and decline

  1054. shines the

  1055. glorious

  1056. light of

  1057. God's

  1058. grace.

  1059. grace.

  1060. Our

  1061. sovereign

  1062. God,

  1063. by his

  1064. powerful

  1065. word,

  1066. is working

  1067. his purposes

  1068. out through

  1069. history for

  1070. our good

  1071. and for

  1072. his glory.

  1073. Remember,

  1074. history is

  1075. God's

  1076. story.

  1077. This is

  1078. God's world

  1079. that we

  1080. live in.

  1081. Let's see

  1082. this grace

  1083. first,

  1084. faithful God.

  1085. Go back

  1086. again to

  1087. chapter 15.

  1088. Abijah,

  1089. Solomon's

  1090. grandson,

  1091. has come

  1092. to power

  1093. in Judah,

  1094. and we're

  1095. told what

  1096. he is like

  1097. in verse

  1098. 3.

  1099. He

  1100. committed

  1101. all the

  1102. sins his

  1103. father had

  1104. done before

  1105. him.

  1106. His heart

  1107. was not

  1108. fully devoted

  1109. to the

  1110. Lord his

  1111. God as

  1112. the heart

  1113. of David

  1114. his

  1115. forefather

  1116. had been.

  1117. It's

  1118. just part

  1119. of the

  1120. dark

  1121. decline,

  1122. isn't

  1123. it?

  1124. Here's

  1125. another

  1126. hopeless

  1127. failing

  1128. king,

  1129. another

  1130. futile

  1131. legacy,

  1132. and the

  1133. expectation

  1134. is,

  1135. well,

  1136. what's

  1137. God

  1138. going to

  1139. do

  1140. with

  1141. this

  1142. king?

  1143. Just

  1144. write

  1145. them

  1146. off,

  1147. have

  1148. them

  1149. destroyed?

  1150. Well,

  1151. you could

  1152. do worse,

  1153. I guess,

  1154. but that's

  1155. not what

  1156. happens.

  1157. Look at

  1158. verse 4.

  1159. Nevertheless,

  1160. for David's

  1161. sake,

  1162. the Lord

  1163. his God

  1164. gave him

  1165. a lamp

  1166. in Jerusalem

  1167. by raising

  1168. up a

  1169. son to

  1170. succeed him

  1171. and making

  1172. Jerusalem

  1173. strong.

  1174. God

  1175. says he

  1176. will not

  1177. write them

  1178. off because

  1179. or for

  1180. David's

  1181. sake.

  1182. God

  1183. had promised

  1184. David in

  1185. the years

  1186. before that

  1187. there would

  1188. always be a

  1189. king on

  1190. David's

  1191. throne,

  1192. a faithful

  1193. king who

  1194. would bring

  1195. blessing,

  1196. a righteous

  1197. king who

  1198. would rule.

  1199. So why

  1200. doesn't God

  1201. write Judah

  1202. off and

  1203. condemn it

  1204. to history?

  1205. Because of

  1206. God's

  1207. faithful

  1208. promise.

  1209. That's what's

  1210. holding the

  1211. whole story

  1212. of one

  1213. king together.

  1214. God's

  1215. faithfulness.

  1216. Everyone that

  1217. we meet

  1218. fails

  1219. spectacularly,

  1220. yet in it

  1221. all is

  1222. God's

  1223. persistent

  1224. faithfulness,

  1225. ruling

  1226. history by

  1227. his powerful

  1228. word and

  1229. fulfilling

  1230. his promise.

  1231. It seems

  1232. there is

  1233. nothing and

  1234. no one that

  1235. can derail

  1236. what God

  1237. is setting

  1238. out to

  1239. do.

  1240. So greater

  1241. grace is

  1242. seen in

  1243. God's

  1244. faithfulness.

  1245. Second,

  1246. the shining

  1247. light.

  1248. Because this

  1249. promise of

  1250. God's

  1251. faithfulness,

  1252. his promise

  1253. to preserve,

  1254. is like a

  1255. shining light

  1256. through the

  1257. darkness of

  1258. history.

  1259. Look at

  1260. verse 4

  1261. again.

  1262. God said

  1263. he would

  1264. give a

  1265. lamp in

  1266. Jerusalem.

  1267. There would

  1268. be a

  1269. succession of

  1270. kings, and

  1271. even though

  1272. they are bad

  1273. and terrible

  1274. and evil

  1275. in many of

  1276. their ways,

  1277. we are

  1278. reminded that

  1279. each king

  1280. that comes

  1281. along the

  1282. way is

  1283. just a

  1284. light, a

  1285. flicker of

  1286. God's

  1287. promise that

  1288. it will

  1289. never be

  1290. extinguished.

  1291. He will

  1292. always have

  1293. a king, and

  1294. from that

  1295. king would

  1296. become God's

  1297. king.

  1298. We even

  1299. get a glimpse

  1300. of that if

  1301. you look down

  1302. at verse 11.

  1303. That light

  1304. begins to

  1305. flicker a

  1306. little bit

  1307. brighter.

  1308. Verse 11,

  1309. Asa did

  1310. what was

  1311. right in

  1312. the eyes

  1313. of the

  1314. Lord as

  1315. his father

  1316. David had

  1317. done.

  1318. out of

  1319. all these

  1320. kings, one

  1321. king, out

  1322. of all these

  1323. other kings,

  1324. only one

  1325. who does

  1326. right, God

  1327. showing his

  1328. persistence that

  1329. yes, he will

  1330. raise up a

  1331. king who will

  1332. do what is

  1333. right and

  1334. what is

  1335. good.

  1336. But we only

  1337. need to read

  1338. on and discover

  1339. that Asa was

  1340. not all that he

  1341. ought to be.

  1342. so we have

  1343. a shining

  1344. light of

  1345. God's

  1346. faithfulness

  1347. through the

  1348. darkness

  1349. giving us

  1350. a glimpse

  1351. of what is

  1352. to come.

  1353. And third,

  1354. our glorious

  1355. hope because

  1356. in the course

  1357. of time

  1358. that flickering

  1359. lamp that

  1360. God had

  1361. promised

  1362. would become

  1363. the light

  1364. of the

  1365. world.

  1366. Remember

  1367. how John

  1368. introduces us

  1369. to Jesus?

  1370. the true

  1371. light that

  1372. gives light

  1373. to everyone

  1374. was coming

  1375. into the

  1376. world.

  1377. Here is

  1378. this promised

  1379. light, the

  1380. one that God

  1381. said would

  1382. come, that he

  1383. persisted through

  1384. all the failures

  1385. down through the

  1386. history of the

  1387. world.

  1388. Amidst the

  1389. darkness, that

  1390. glimmer, that

  1391. light begins to

  1392. shine and

  1393. becomes as

  1394. brightest as

  1395. Jesus Christ

  1396. enters the

  1397. world.

  1398. You see, when

  1399. the light of

  1400. Christ shines

  1401. into our

  1402. lives and

  1403. when the

  1404. lamp of his

  1405. truth cuts

  1406. into the

  1407. darkness of

  1408. our hearts, we

  1409. begin to see

  1410. how worthless

  1411. our idols

  1412. are.

  1413. We see how

  1414. futile life

  1415. is without

  1416. God.

  1417. And as we

  1418. turn to

  1419. Jesus, so

  1420. the light

  1421. banishes the

  1422. darkness of

  1423. decline, giving

  1424. us a new

  1425. way to

  1426. live.

  1427. Turn with

  1428. me, please,

  1429. to Colossians

    Colossians 1 chapter mention

  1430. chapter 1.

  1431. Colossians

    Colossians 1 chapter mention

  1432. chapter 1.

  1433. Remember what

  1434. we read at the

  1435. very beginning

  1436. this morning?

  1437. here we see

  1438. what God's

  1439. true king

  1440. would do.

  1441. Colossians 1

    Colossians 1:12

  1442. verse 12,

  1443. joyfully, or

  1444. giving joyful

  1445. thanks to the

  1446. father who has

  1447. qualified you

  1448. to share in

  1449. the inheritance

  1450. of his holy

  1451. people in the

  1452. kingdom of

  1453. light.

  1454. for he has

  1455. rescued us

  1456. from the

  1457. dominion of

  1458. darkness

  1459. and brought

  1460. us into the

  1461. kingdom of

  1462. the son he

  1463. loves, in

  1464. whom we have

  1465. redemption, the

  1466. forgiveness of

  1467. sins.

  1468. Here is God's

  1469. king who brings

  1470. glorious hope,

  1471. taking people

  1472. from this dark

  1473. decline of

  1474. emptiness and

  1475. nothingness and

  1476. a root that

  1477. just ends in

  1478. judgment and

  1479. separation from

  1480. God brings

  1481. us into the

  1482. kingdom of

  1483. his son.

  1484. What amazing

  1485. redemption, what

  1486. glorious hope

  1487. there is.

  1488. But you know

  1489. what?

  1490. This light, this

  1491. lamp doesn't

  1492. stop with Jesus

  1493. Christ.

  1494. Go back with

  1495. me to Matthew's

  1496. gospel, chapter

  1497. 5.

  1498. Matthew chapter

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  1499. 5.

  1500. 5.

  1501. Because as we

  1502. come to

  1503. Jesus, as we

  1504. submit to the

  1505. true king, as

  1506. we bow

  1507. before him,

  1508. then we in

  1509. turn become the

  1510. light to the

  1511. world.

  1512. Matthew chapter 5 verse 14.

    Matthew 5:14

  1513. Jesus says,

1514. You are the light of the world.

1515. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden.

1516. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl.

1517. Instead they put it on its stand and it gives light to everyone in the house.

1518. In the same way, let your light shine before others,

1519. that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

1520. The church, God's holy people,

1521. who have come to the Son, the Lord Jesus Christ,

  1522. are transformed.

  1523. The darkness is banished.

1524. Instead, the church is to be a shining, glorious beacon of hope

1525. to a world that is shattered and broken.

1526. That is what we are as we go out into the world,

1527. as collectively as we live, as God's people.

  1528. Shining lights.

  1529. Beacons of hope.

1530. Amidst this darkness of decline.

1531. Showing people the true Saviour.

  1532. The true King.

1533. Who is in control of this world.

1534. And who longs that all people would turn to Him.

1535. So let your light shine before others,

1536. that they may see your good deeds

1537. and glorify your Father in heaven.

  1538. Let's pray.

1539. Father, we look out upon your world,

1540. and we do see the brokenness all around us.

1541. The tragedy, the sadness, and all the pain.

1542. And your heart is broken.

1543. You grieve at what you see.

  1544. And yet in Christ,

  1545. shines the glorious hope

  1546. for us

  1547. and for this world.

1548. We thank you that in Jesus,

1549. we have been brought into an eternal kingdom.

1550. The kingdom of His Son.

1551. And we pray that we would be people

1552. who shine forth your light.

  1553. And that together,

1554. you would use us collectively

1555. as your people here in Karigaline.

1556. And as we are scattered throughout this week,

1557. that we would be a light shining for you.

1558. Pointing people to the hope,

  1559. the glorious hope,

1560. that there is to be found in King Jesus.

  1561. Help us, we pray.

1562. Be merciful and use us.

  1563. In Jesus' name.

  1564. Amen.

1565. Well, let's sing in response

1566. and encourage one another as we sing

  1567. What Grace Is My...
