  1. One said, part of God's answer, when God answered the question of suffering, he gave us the book of Job, which is 42 chapters.

  2. In other words, it's not an easy answer.

  3. So we're going to be looking at Job partly this morning, but at other passages.

  4. But we're going to read all of chapter 1 as we begin.

  5. So Job, just before Psalms, Job chapter 1.

    Job 1 chapter mention

  6. In the land of Uz there lived a man whose name was Job.

  7. This man was blameless and upright.

  8. He feared God and shunned evil.

  9. He had seven sons and three daughters, and he owned 7,000 sheep, 3,000 camels, 500 yoke of oxen, 500 donkeys, and had a large number of servants.

  10. He was the greatest man among all the people of the East.

  11. His sons used to hold feasts in their homes on their birthdays, and they would invite their three sisters to eat and drink with them.

  12. When a period of feasting had run its course, Job would make an arrangement for them to be purified.

  13. Early in the morning, he would sacrifice a burnt offering for each of them, thinking,

  14. Perhaps my children have sinned and cursed God in their hearts.

  15. This was Job's regular custom.

  16. One day, the angels came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan also came with them.

  17. The Lord said to Satan, Where have you come from?

  18. Satan answered the Lord, From roaming throughout the earth, going to and fro on it.

  19. Then the Lord said to Satan, Have you considered my servant Job?

  20. There is no one on earth like him.

  21. He is blameless and upright, a man who fears God and shuns evil.

  22. Does Job fear God for nothing?

  23. Satan replied.

  24. Have you not put a hedge around him and a household and everything he has?

  25. You have blessed the work of his hands, and so that his flocks and herds are spread throughout the land.

  26. But now stretch out your hand and strike everything he has, and he will surely curse you to your face.

  27. The Lord said to Satan, Very well then, everything he has is in your power, but on the man himself do not lay a finger.

  28. Then Satan went out from the presence of the Lord.

  29. One day when Job's sons and daughters were fasting and drinking wine in the eldest brother's house,

  30. a messenger came to Job and said, The oxen were plowing and the donkeys were grazing nearby,

  31. and the Sabaeans attacked and made off with them.

  32. They put the servants to the sword, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you.

  33. While he was still speaking, another messenger came and said,

  34. The fire of God fell from the heavens and burned up the sheep and the servants,

  35. and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you.

  36. While he was still speaking, another messenger came and said,

  37. The Chaldeans formed three raiding parties and swept down on your camels and made off with them.

  38. They put the servants to the sword, and I am the only one who has escaped to tell you.

  39. While he was still speaking, yet another messenger came and said,

  40. Your sons and daughters were feasting and drinking wine at the elder brother's house,

  41. when suddenly a mighty wind swept in from the desert and struck the four corners of the house.

  42. It collapsed on them, and they are dead.

  43. And I am the only one who has escaped to tell you.

  44. At this Job got up, tore his robe, shaved his head.

  45. Then he fell to the ground in worship and said,

  46. Naked I came from my mother's womb.

  47. Naked I shall depart.

  48. The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away.

  49. May the name of the Lord be praised.

  50. In all this, Job did not sin by charging God with wrongdoing.

  51. Well, we'll be looking at Job in a little while.

  52. Before we start, just to make mention of a couple of things.

  53. In your new sheet, you'll notice there's some books alongside the Bible that we should primarily read.

  54. We can also read the experiences of Christians who suffered.

  55. So as we go through the series, I'll recommend books along the way that may be helpful to you.

  56. These are two that I have read myself in the past and found them very, very helpful.

  57. Both Paul Mallard.

  58. He writes of his wife's suffering and consequence knock-on effects on their family.

  59. That's the first one.

  60. And then others you may know, Joni Tada and her injuries through her life, a place of healing, which is very, very helpful as well.

  61. So those are two.

  62. I've ordered some copies.

  63. I hope I'll have them for next Sunday.

  64. And you can purchase them if you would like them.

  65. The other thing to say is the notes that I gave out today.

  66. There's not really questions like there normally is.

  67. What I've done is just the same headings will be on the screen as on the pieces of paper.

  68. But there's kind of like little summary points.

  69. So what I'd like us to do is more to engage with what I have to say, what we look at from God's word.

  70. There'll be lots of questions.

  71. We won't answer everything.

  72. So maybe there's a question that arises and you need to write that down.

  73. You can talk to me afterwards or underline something.

  74. But it's more to be reflective of what we hear from God's word.

  75. So with all that in mind, let's pray and ask for his help to us today.

  76. The Lord is majestic, sovereign in all his ways.

  77. We bow to your mastery.

  78. We bow in worship before you.

  79. We humble ourselves before you, O Lord.

  80. For you are the God who gives life.

  81. The God who takes life.

  82. The God in whom we can trust.

  83. So would you please help us as we look at your word together to be listening carefully.

  84. Not just to understand with our minds.

  85. But that we would know truth penetrating our hearts.

  86. Changing our minds and our wills.

  87. That we might love you and trust you more and more.

  88. We ask for your help.

  89. Amen.

  90. About three years ago, I noticed a slight tremor in my right arm.

  91. I tried to ignore it, thinking that it was just a trapped nerve and that it would soon go away.

  92. After a number of months, it was still there, so I went to the doctors.

  93. And what followed was a series of tests with the neurologists.

  94. On the final visit, I sat waiting for the results.

  95. I've often thought about suffering, and I've asked the question, why, many times.

  96. Reading and reasoning things out in my mind.

  97. But this time, it was different.

  98. It was personal.

  99. Jonathan Grant.

  100. I walked in and I sat down.

  101. The consultant looked at me sympathetically.

  102. You have early onset Parkinson's disease.

  103. Now Parkinson's is a neurological disease which affects and controls the movement of the body.

  104. And thankfully, with medication, it's being kept in check.

  105. And it remains quite stable.

  106. Now I share this not to gain sympathy.

  107. Or because my suffering is worse than yours.

  108. It's not.

  109. I've sat with many of you.

  110. I've talked with you.

  111. I've prayed with you.

  112. I've cried with you.

  113. I share it because for most of us, the question of suffering is not intellectual and philosophical.

  114. It's personal and experiential.

  115. So for you, perhaps, you've watched a family member struggle with cancer.

  116. Maybe you've lost a close friend through a tragic accident.

  117. But maybe it's even more personal than that.

  118. Maybe you are suffering.

  119. Perhaps a broken relationship.

  120. An ongoing illness.

  121. Struggling with unfulfilled dreams.

  122. You see, we all live in a world where suffering is deeply real.

  123. Disease and disability.

  124. Earthquakes and tsunamis.

  125. Wars and famine.

  126. Violence and rape.

  127. And the hard reality is that if we live long enough, we will suffer.

  128. Now, the question before us is this morning, what do we do about all this suffering?

  129. Well, our natural reaction is to blame God.

  130. A parent buries their own child and inside they're crying out,

  131. Why did you let my child die?

  132. A landslide smothers a whole village, wiping out hundreds.

  133. How can you let this happen?

  134. Why did you create such a horrible world?

  135. Why do you inflict such terrible pain?

  136. Our experience of suffering means we are hurt and we are angry.

  137. Something is not right with this world.

  138. We don't like suffering and we desperately want it to stop.

  139. And God, it seems, is to blame for all the suffering we see and experience.

  140. But yet, there's a problem.

  141. You see, we can only truly blame God if we believe in God.

  142. If you're an atheist, you can't blame God because, well, to you, he doesn't exist.

  143. You cannot get angry at a non-existent God.

  144. A true atheist believes that life in this world is just a random series of events.

  145. To quote one philosopher, we are simply the outcome of an accidental collection of atoms.

  146. So why is suffering a problem?

  147. It's just the natural shape and form of life.

  148. Why is it a problem if a child is born with no limbs?

  149. What does it matter if a tornado wipes out a village?

  150. It's just the way it is.

  151. No rhyme or reason.

  152. It just is.

  153. Get on with it.

  154. So if an atheist is to be true to himself or herself, they have no God to be angry at.

  155. We cannot blame a God who does not exist.

  156. And if God does not exist, well, then we cannot expect him to intervene and end the suffering we face.

  157. However, whatever our belief about God, all of us have this sense that suffering is not meant to be.

  158. Deep down, we want suffering to end.

  159. So what do we do about the problem?

  160. Well, I think we need to at least consider what God has to say.

  161. We mightn't like everything that God says,

  162. and God mightn't answer everything we ask, but we must let God be God.

  163. If we're going to be angry at God, and I don't think there's any wrong in being angry,

  164. then we need to leave room for him to answer.

  165. We cannot simply shout at God and not listen to what he has to say.

  166. So three things we're going to look at in response to why all the suffering.

  167. First, God and the cause of suffering.

  168. Turn with me, please, to Genesis chapter 2.

    Genesis 2 chapter mention

  169. God and the cause of suffering.

  170. The Bible story begins with a world that is full of beauty and harmony.

  171. It's a world where there is no suffering.

  172. It's life as we long for in all its wonder.

  173. But we don't have to read too far along,

  174. and we begin to see what caused the suffering in the world.

  175. And it seems there are three interrelated causes or reasons for suffering.

  176. First, human rebellion.

  177. God created a world in which there was one loving ruler.

  178. God is the creator.

  179. God made the world, so he owns the world.

  180. And because he owns the world, he makes the rules.

  181. Chapter 2, verse 15.

  182. The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden.

  183. Eden, of course, means paradise.

  184. Took him to work in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.

  185. And the Lord God commanded the man,

  186. You are free to eat from any tree in the garden,

  187. but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil,

  188. for when you eat from it, you will certainly die.

  189. Now, I don't think it was some kind of magical fruit.

  190. God was simply setting a boundary.

  191. Don't break my commands.

  192. Because if you do, there will be disorder, disease, decay.

  193. It's all going to end in death.

  194. If you set yourself up as ruler, it will end in terrible suffering.

  195. And as we'll see, that's what happened.

  196. The first man and woman rebelled against God,

  197. and suffering has entered the world.

  198. In fact, the history of mankind, including ourselves,

  199. has been ongoing in their rebellion.

  200. As a human race, we have added to suffering

  201. through selfish actions and evil choices.

  202. So first, there is human rebellion.

  203. Second, there's satanic influence.

  204. Chapter 3, verse 1.

  205. Now, the snake, later identified as Satan,

  206. known as the deceiver, who is a fallen angel.

  207. We're not told how or why not all these things are given to us,

  208. but simply that he is a fallen angel.

  209. Now, the snake was more crafty than any of the wild animals

  210. the Lord God had made.

  211. He said to the woman,

  212. Did God really say you must not eat from the tree,

  213. from any tree in the garden?

  214. Verse 4.

  215. You will not certainly die,

  216. the snake said to the woman.

  217. For God knows that when you eat from it,

  218. your eyes will be opened,

  219. and you will be like God,

  220. knowing good and evil.

  221. In other words,

  222. you will be the ones who will decide

  223. what is good

  224. and what is evil.

  225. You see, Satan is the arch enemy of God.

  226. He loves to break and destroy.

  227. He sets himself up against God

  228. and is motivated by a pure hate

  229. of all that is good and beautiful.

  230. And we must never underestimate

  231. Satan's influence.

  232. The Bible describes him as a force of evil,

  233. the God of this age,

  234. or the ruler of the kingdom of the air.

  235. The Apostle Paul talks about his thorn in the flesh,

  236. his suffering,

  237. as a messenger of Satan.

  238. Luke tells us that when Jesus went around healing people,

  239. he was healing those

  240. who were under the power of the devil.

  241. So, second,

  242. Satan has had an influence

  243. and continues to have an influence

  244. in causing suffering.

  245. Third,

  246. God's judgment.

  247. As humans rebelled

  248. and as Satan influenced,

  249. the Bible is very clear

  250. why there is suffering.

  251. Suffering

  252. is in the world

  253. as a result of God's judgment

  254. on the world.

  255. Look at God's response

  256. to this rebellion

  257. and this

  258. satanic influence.

  259. Chapter 3,

  260. verse 14.

  261. So the Lord God said to the snake,

  262. because you have done this,

  263. cursed are you above all the livestock

  264. and all the wild animals.

  265. Verse 15.

  266. And I will put enmity

  267. between you and the woman

  268. and between her offspring

  269. and yours.

  270. So there's going to be this conflict

  271. continuously between Satan

  272. and people.

  273. Verse 16.

  274. To the woman, he said,

  275. I will make your pains

  276. in childbearing very severe.

  277. With painful labour,

  278. you will give birth to children.

  279. Your desire will be for your husband

  280. and he will rule over you.

  281. Now that last part is that

  282. she will want to

  283. dominate and rule over

  284. and your husband

  285. will want to rule over

  286. in a tyrannical kind of way.

  287. Verse 17.

  288. To Adam, he said,

  289. because you listened to your wife

  290. and ate fruit from the tree

  291. about which I commanded you,

  292. you must not eat from it.

  293. Cursed is the ground

  294. because of you.

  295. Through painful toil,

  296. you will eat food from it

  297. all the days of your life.

  298. It will produce thorns

  299. and thistles

  300. and you will eat the plants

  301. of the field.

  302. End of verse 19.

  303. For dust you are

  304. and to dust you will return.

  305. This curse,

  306. this judgment,

  307. comes from God

  308. and it results

  309. in all kinds of suffering.

  310. suffering.

  311. The sufferings we see

  312. and experience,

  313. whether it's physical,

  314. spiritual,

  315. social,

  316. relational,

  317. psychological,

  318. everything is now out of sync.

  319. The fabric of the universe

  320. has been undone.

  321. It's like somebody

  322. has pulled a thread

  323. and keeps pulling

  324. and everything is unravelling.

  325. And as a result,

  326. we now live in a world

  327. which is under the sentence

  328. of death.

  329. Paul describes this suffering

  330. as frustration.

  331. Have a look at Romans chapter 8.

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  332. Romans chapter 8.

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  333. Here it is described as frustration.

  334. The world doesn't function

  335. as it should.

  336. Everything is frustrated.

  337. Chapter 8, verse 20.

  338. For the creation

  339. was subjected to frustration

  340. not by its own choice,

  341. but by the will of the one

  342. who subjected it.

  343. Who subjected it?

  344. God subjected it

  345. to frustration.

  346. God subjected it

  347. to bondage

  348. and decay.

  349. And that judgment

  350. is being felt

  351. globally

  352. and personally

  353. every day.

  354. Now we mustn't think

  355. that God is sitting there

  356. in the throne of heaven

  357. thinking up

  358. terrible cancers

  359. and concocting

  360. terrible diseases

  361. that he can just

  362. unleash upon the world

  363. at will.

  364. No suffering

  365. suffering

  366. in all its

  367. different kinds

  368. are the consequences

  369. of rebellion.

  370. The results

  371. of satanic influence.

  372. The outworkings

  373. of God's judgment.

  374. But we ask

  375. why would God

  376. judge the world

  377. in this way?

  378. Well look at the rest

  379. of verse 20

  380. of Romans 8.

  381. God judges

  382. in hope

  383. that the creation

  384. itself

  385. will be liberated

  386. from its bondage

  387. to decay

  388. and brought

  389. into the freedom

  390. and glory

  391. of the children

  392. of God.

  393. God judges

  394. in such a way

  395. to show

  396. how terrible

  397. and awful

  398. sin is

  399. and how desperately

  400. we need a saviour

  401. who would come

  402. and intervene

  403. and liberate us

  404. and free us

  405. from a sin

  406. wrecked

  407. world.

  408. So in summary

  409. of the first

  410. God

  411. and the cause

  412. of suffering

  413. we can say

  414. that man

  415. is ultimately

  416. responsible

  417. Satan

  418. desires it

  419. and God

  420. has willed it.

  421. So first

  422. God

  423. and the cause

  424. of suffering.

  425. Second

  426. God

  427. and his

  428. control

  429. over suffering.

  430. While we

  431. live in a world

  432. that is broken

  433. and under

  434. God's judgment

  435. we mustn't

  436. fall into

  437. the false

  438. teaching

  439. that says

  440. and we hear

  441. it from people

  442. your suffering

  443. is a result

  444. of personal

  445. sin

  446. or your

  447. suffering

  448. is because

  449. you don't

  450. have enough

  451. faith.

  452. Many Christians

  453. operate in that

  454. way and it's

  455. dangerous

  456. and it's

  457. terrible.

  458. It's not

  459. what the

  460. Bible teaches.

  461. We should

  462. not view

  463. that every

  464. suffering

  465. we experience

  466. is a direct

  467. judgment

  468. from God.

  469. The level

  470. of our

  471. personal

  472. suffering

  473. is not

  474. equated

  475. with our

  476. level of

  477. personal

  478. sin.

  479. So if

  480. we are

  481. suffering

  482. in a

  483. particular

  484. way

  485. it's

  486. not

  487. because

  488. of

  489. the

  490. amount

  491. of

  492. sin

  493. I've

  494. done.

  495. So if

  496. I have

  497. some

  498. incurable

  499. unidentified

  500. disease

  501. it's not

  502. because

  503. necessarily

  504. there's a

  505. whole heap

  506. of sin

  507. in my

  508. life.

  509. Rather

  510. what we

  511. see and

  512. experience

  513. in our

  514. world

  515. today

  516. is the

  517. outworkings

  518. of what

  519. we looked

  520. at in

  521. part one.

  522. The

  523. outworkings

  524. of God's

  525. curse

  526. on the

  527. world.

  528. We live

  529. in the

  530. world that

  531. is frustrated

  532. under the

  533. sentence of

  534. death.

  535. And yet

  536. we live

  537. in a

  538. world where

  539. God

  540. controls

  541. and rules

  542. over all

  543. suffering.

  544. So let's

  545. turn to

  546. the book

  547. of Job.

  548. Go to

  549. the book

  550. of Job.

  551. The

  552. author

  553. at the

  554. very

  555. beginning

  556. wants us

  557. to know

  558. that Job

  559. is a

  560. good man.

  561. He's not

  562. sinless,

  563. he's not

  564. perfect,

  565. but he

  566. is

  567. righteous.

  568. So

  569. Job,

  570. just

  571. before

  572. Psalms,

  573. somebody

  574. got it

  575. there and

  576. I'll

  577. call out

  578. the

  579. number.

  580. 509.

  581. 509,

  582. Job

    Job 1 chapter mention

  583. chapter

  584. 1.

  585. So we

  586. read there,

  587. we're

  588. introduced

  589. to him

  590. that in

  591. the land

  592. of Uz

  593. there lived

  594. a man

  595. whose name

  596. was Job.

  597. This

  598. man was

  599. blameless

  600. and upright.

  601. He feared

  602. God and

  603. shunned

  604. evil.

  605. He even,

  606. verse 5,

  607. prayed for

  608. his children

  609. in case

  610. they had

  611. sinned.

  612. Job is

  613. set up

  614. before us

  615. as somebody

  616. who's

  617. innocent,

  618. but yet

  619. he has

  620. suffered

  621. terribly

  622. in three

  623. ways.

  624. First,

  625. he suffered

  626. at the

  627. hands

  628. of other

  629. men in

  630. verses 13

  631. and 17.

  632. Evil

  633. actions

  634. from

  635. outsiders.

  636. People

  637. have

  638. come in

  639. and it's

  640. meant he

  641. has lost

  642. his herds

  643. and his

  644. servants

  645. as they

  646. took them

  647. away.

  648. He

  649. suffers at

  650. the hands

  651. of other

  652. men.

  653. Second,

  654. he suffers

  655. natural

  656. disasters,

  657. we might

  658. call them

  659. in verses

  660. 16 and

  661. 19.

  662. A fire

  663. comes and

  664. a tornado

  665. comes that

  666. destroyed his

  667. animals and

  668. horrifically a

  669. wind comes

  670. in,

  671. knocks down

  672. the house

  673. and kills

  674. ten of

  675. his children,

  676. all of his

  677. children,

  678. their husbands

  679. and wives,

  680. gone in a

  681. moment.

  682. And then

  683. third,

  684. he suffers,

  685. we didn't

  686. read this,

  687. but have a

  688. look at

  689. chapter 2

  690. verse 7.

  691. He suffered

  692. personal

  693. illness

  694. and pain.

  695. Chapter 2

  696. verse 7,

  697. so Satan

  698. went out

  699. from the

  700. presence of

  701. the Lord

  702. and afflicted

  703. Job with

  704. painful sores

  705. and soles

  706. on his feet

  707. to the

  708. crown of

  709. his head,

  710. an excruciating

  711. flesh-eating

  712. disease

  713. from which

  714. there was

  715. no comfort.

  716. Job is

  717. an innocent

  718. man,

  719. yet he

  720. suffers

  721. terribly.

  722. And that

  723. is how

  724. most suffering

  725. appears to

  726. us.

  727. We can do

  728. nothing wrong,

  729. we can live

  730. God-honouring

  731. lives,

  732. and yet we

  733. can experience

  734. an incurable

  735. illness,

  736. we can face

  737. the death

  738. of our

  739. child,

  740. and we

  741. could lose

  742. everything in

  743. a moment.

  744. Why is

  745. this?

  746. we look

  747. out and

  748. we wonder,

  749. is anyone

  750. in control

  751. of all

  752. of this,

  753. or is

  754. this just

  755. a random

  756. set of

  757. events,

  758. and somehow

  759. I've just

  760. been dealt

  761. a bad set

  762. of cards,

  763. and I have

  764. to live

  765. with it?

  766. Well,

  767. Job gives

  768. us answers.

  769. First,

  770. Satan

  771. causes the

  772. suffering,

  773. or does

  774. he?

  775. at first

  776. it seems

  777. Satan

  778. caused

  779. the

  780. suffering.

  781. Go back

  782. to chapter

  783. 1,

  784. verse 6.

  785. One day

  786. the angels

  787. came to

  788. present

  789. themselves

  790. before the

  791. Lord,

  792. and Satan

  793. also came

  794. with them.

  795. The Lord

  796. said to

  797. Satan,

  798. where have

  799. you come

  800. from?

  801. Satan

  802. answered

  803. the Lord,

  804. from roaming

  805. throughout the

  806. earth,

  807. going to

  808. and fro

  809. in it.

  810. What a

  811. picture.

  812. of evil

  813. intent.

  814. Roaming

  815. around,

  816. looking to

  817. cause harm

  818. and disorder.

  819. And after

  820. his conversation

  821. with God

  822. about this

  823. person,

  824. Job,

  825. Job doesn't

  826. know about

  827. this conversation.

  828. We read

  829. in verse 11,

  830. Satan

  831. says to

  832. God,

  833. but now

  834. stretch out

  835. your hand

  836. and strike

  837. everything he

  838. has,

  839. and he

  840. will surely

  841. curse you

  842. to your

  843. face.

  844. the Lord

  845. said to

  846. Satan,

  847. very well

  848. then,

  849. everything he

  850. has is in

  851. your power,

  852. but on

  853. the man

  854. himself do

  855. not lay

  856. a finger.

  857. Then Satan

  858. went out

  859. from the

  860. presence of

  861. the Lord,

  862. and the

  863. suffering

  864. begins.

  865. The attacks

  866. from evil

  867. men,

  868. the natural

  869. disasters,

  870. his personal

  871. suffering.

  872. suffering.

  873. And in

  874. regards to

  875. his personal

  876. suffering,

  877. look at

  878. verse 7

  879. again,

  880. chapter 2,

  881. verse 7.

  882. Satan

  883. went out

  884. from the

  885. presence of

  886. the Lord,

  887. and afflicted

  888. Job with

  889. painful sores

  890. and soles

  891. on his feet

  892. to the

  893. crown of

  894. his head.

  895. Satan,

  896. it seems,

  897. has caused

  898. the suffering

  899. that has

  900. come into

  901. Job's

  902. life.

  903. Now,

  904. that raises

  905. big questions

  906. for us.

  907. If that

  908. is true,

  909. does that

  910. mean Satan

  911. has power

  912. to do as

  913. he pleases?

  914. Do we

  915. live in a

  916. world in

  917. which God

  918. is just

  919. simply an

  920. opposite but

  921. equal force,

  922. kind of

  923. darkness and

  924. light, good

  925. and evil,

  926. 50-50,

  927. one against

  928. the other,

  929. in an arm

  930. wrestle?

  931. Who's going

  932. to win?

  933. Has God

  934. got his

  935. hands tied

  936. trying to

  937. second guess

  938. Satan's

  939. next move,

  940. always playing

  941. catch-up,

  942. trying to

  943. outwit each

  944. other?

  945. Well,

  946. that's how

  947. many people

  948. view it,

  949. but that's

  950. not the

  951. answer.

  952. The answer

  953. is more

  954. complex and

  955. difficult,

  956. but yet

  957. clear.

  958. God is

  959. supremely

  960. in control

  961. of all

  962. suffering.

  963. God is

  964. in control

  965. of all

  966. suffering.

  967. You see,

  968. behind Satan's

  969. desire to

  970. destroy and

  971. harm is

  972. God's

  973. sovereignty.

  974. Satan is

  975. on a

  976. leash.

  977. God has

  978. him on a

  979. lead.

  980. Or as

  981. Luther once

  982. said,

  983. he is

  984. God's

  985. Satan,

  986. a servant

  987. to God's

  988. purposes.

  989. Look carefully

  990. at what God

  991. says in

  992. this discussion

  993. with Satan.

  994. First,

  995. it's God

  996. who initiates

  997. the conversation

  998. about Job.

  999. So look at

  1000. chapter 1,

  1001. verse 8.

  1002. God initiates

  1003. the conversation

  1004. about Job.

    Job 1:8

  1005. 1,

  1006. verse 8.

  1007. The Lord

  1008. said to

  1009. Satan,

  1010. have you

  1011. considered

  1012. my servant

  1013. Job?

  1014. So God

  1015. is in

  1016. charge of

  1017. all events

  1018. here,

  1019. not Satan.

  1020. Second,

  1021. it's God

  1022. who permits

  1023. the

  1024. suffering.

  1025. He

  1026. initiates

  1027. the

  1028. conversation,

  1029. he permits

  1030. the

  1031. suffering.

  1032. Chapter

  1033. 1,

  1034. verse 12,

  1035. read it

  1036. carefully.

  1037. The Lord

  1038. said to

  1039. Satan,

  1040. very well

  1041. then,

  1042. everything

  1043. he has

  1044. is in

  1045. your power,

  1046. but on

  1047. the man

  1048. himself

  1049. do not

  1050. lay a

  1051. finger.

  1052. God

  1053. sets

  1054. boundaries.

  1055. Chapter

  1056. 2,

  1057. verse 6.

  1058. The Lord

  1059. said to

  1060. Satan,

  1061. very well

  1062. then,

  1063. he is in

  1064. your hands,

  1065. but you

  1066. must spare

  1067. his life.

  1068. God

  1069. sets

  1070. boundaries.

  1071. You can

  1072. do this,

  1073. Satan.

  1074. You can

  1075. allow this

  1076. to happen,

  1077. but no

  1078. more

  1079. and no

  1080. further.

  1081. You will

  1082. not cross

  1083. the lines

  1084. that I

  1085. mark out.

  1086. Satan

  1087. can't

  1088. act

  1089. without

  1090. God's

  1091. permission,

  1092. without

  1093. God's

  1094. decree,

  1095. without

  1096. God's

  1097. say-so.

  1098. So,

  1099. he initiates

  1100. the conversation,

  1101. he permits

  1102. the suffering,

  1103. and third,

  1104. it is God

  1105. who

  1106. ultimately

  1107. is the

  1108. cause.

  1109. And I

  1110. use that

  1111. word

  1112. carefully

  1113. and with

  1114. great

  1115. consideration.

  1116. Look how

  1117. Job

  1118. responds

  1119. to the

  1120. suffering.

  1121. Chapter 1,

  1122. verse 20.

  1123. At this,

  1124. Job

  1125. got up,

  1126. tore his

  1127. robe,

  1128. shaved his

  1129. head,

  1130. then he

  1131. fell to the

  1132. ground in

  1133. worship and

  1134. said,

  1135. Naked I

  1136. came from

  1137. my mother's

  1138. womb,

  1139. and naked

  1140. I shall

  1141. depart.

  1142. the Lord

  1143. gave,

  1144. and the

  1145. Lord

  1146. has taken

  1147. away.

  1148. The

  1149. Lord

  1150. has taken

  1151. away.

  1152. He's taken

  1153. away the

  1154. flocks and

  1155. herds,

  1156. he's taken

  1157. away the

  1158. servants,

  1159. he's taken

  1160. away my

  1161. children.

  1162. May the

  1163. name of the

  1164. Lord be

  1165. praised.

  1166. in all

  1167. this,

  1168. Job did

  1169. not sin

  1170. by charging

  1171. God with

  1172. wrongdoing.

  1173. God has

  1174. done no

  1175. wrong in

  1176. what has

  1177. happened.

  1178. And

  1179. concerning his

  1180. own health,

  1181. chapter 2,

  1182. verse 9,

  1183. his wife

  1184. said to

  1185. him,

  1186. to Job,

  1187. this is in

  1188. his personal

  1189. illness,

  1190. are you

  1191. still maintaining

  1192. your integrity?

  1193. Curse God

  1194. and die.

  1195. Job replied,

  1196. you are

  1197. talking like

  1198. a foolish

  1199. woman.

  1200. Shall we

  1201. accept good

  1202. from God

  1203. and not

  1204. trouble?

  1205. Do we

  1206. just accept

  1207. that in

  1208. the course

  1209. of life,

  1210. God is

  1211. in control

  1212. of good

  1213. things,

  1214. but not

  1215. in control

  1216. of the

  1217. hard things

  1218. and the

  1219. bad things

  1220. that happen

  1221. in our

  1222. life?

  1223. In fact,

  1224. look at

  1225. how the

  1226. author

  1227. summarizes

  1228. what happened

  1229. to Job.

  1230. Go to

  1231. the end

  1232. of the

  1233. book,

  1234. chapter 42,

  1235. verse 11.

  1236. Here is,

  1237. if you like,

  1238. the summary,

  1239. the conclusion

  1240. of the whole

  1241. book.

  1242. chapter 42,

  1243. verse 11.

  1244. All his

  1245. brothers and

  1246. sisters and

  1247. everyone who

  1248. had known

  1249. him before

  1250. came and ate

  1251. with him in

  1252. his house.

  1253. They comforted

  1254. and consoled

  1255. him over

  1256. all the

  1257. trouble the

  1258. Lord had

  1259. brought on

  1260. him.

  1261. They

  1262. comforted

  1263. and consoled

  1264. him over

  1265. all the

  1266. trouble the

  1267. Lord had

  1268. brought on

  1269. him.

  1270. And each

  1271. one gave

  1272. him a

  1273. piece of

  1274. silver and

  1275. a gold

  1276. ring.

  1277. God

  1278. is the

  1279. ultimate

  1280. cause

  1281. because God

  1282. is the

  1283. one who

  1284. is ultimately

  1285. in control.

  1286. You see,

  1287. if God

  1288. is not

  1289. in control,

  1290. if God

  1291. is not

  1292. in charge,

  1293. then Satan

  1294. is.

  1295. And at

  1296. best,

  1297. God is

  1298. just an

  1299. equal but

  1300. opposite

  1301. force,

  1302. trying to

  1303. do his

  1304. best,

  1305. locked in

  1306. an arm

  1307. wrestle,

  1308. who's

  1309. going to

  1310. win?

  1311. And as

  1312. difficult

  1313. and as

  1314. hard as

  1315. it is to

  1316. read these

  1317. words and

  1318. understand the

  1319. minds and

  1320. the ways of

  1321. God,

  1322. God is

  1323. in control

  1324. of all

  1325. suffering.

  1326. Nothing

  1327. happens in

  1328. your life

  1329. without his

  1330. say-so.

  1331. Not one

  1332. thing.

  1333. Every one

  1334. of our

  1335. days has

  1336. been written

  1337. before one

  1338. of them

  1339. came to

  1340. be.

  1341. Not one

  1342. thing is

  1343. outside of

  1344. the control

  1345. of God.

  1346. Not one.

  1347. And if

  1348. God is in

  1349. supreme

  1350. control,

  1351. and if

  1352. God is

  1353. sovereign

  1354. over the

  1355. order and

  1356. events of

  1357. this life,

  1358. then here

  1359. is a

  1360. God who

  1361. not only

  1362. helps us,

  1363. but a

  1364. God who

  1365. can use

  1366. the frustrations

  1367. and the

  1368. sufferings

  1369. and the

  1370. struggles

  1371. and trials

  1372. we may

  1373. go through

  1374. for good

  1375. purposes.

  1376. others.

  1377. So God

  1378. and the

  1379. cause of

  1380. suffering,

  1381. God and

  1382. his

  1383. control

  1384. over

  1385. suffering.

  1386. And third,

  1387. God and

  1388. his cross

  1389. for our

  1390. suffering.

  1391. You see,

  1392. from what we've

  1393. looked at so

  1394. far, it may

  1395. appear that

  1396. God is

  1397. cold and

  1398. unmoved.

  1399. in fact,

  1400. it's as if

  1401. God is

  1402. sitting in

  1403. the comfort

  1404. of another

  1405. world,

  1406. immune to

  1407. the hurts

  1408. and pains

  1409. of life.

  1410. But we

  1411. need to

  1412. remember that

  1413. just as God

  1414. in his

  1415. sovereignty,

  1416. and in

  1417. what in

  1418. some ways

  1419. remains a

  1420. mystery to

  1421. us,

  1422. that God

  1423. who chooses

  1424. suffering for

  1425. the world

  1426. and our

  1427. lives,

  1428. has also

  1429. chosen suffering

  1430. for himself.

  1431. First,

  1432. God suffers

  1433. with us.

  1434. The unique,

  1435. and it

  1436. remains unique

  1437. to the

  1438. God of

  1439. the Bible,

  1440. to Christianity,

  1441. and the

  1442. wonderful truth

  1443. is that

  1444. God has

  1445. come to

  1446. us in

  1447. the person

  1448. of Jesus

  1449. Christ.

  1450. God

  1451. comes to

  1452. suffer

  1453. with us.

  1454. Let's

  1455. have a look

  1456. at Philippians

    Philippians 2 chapter mention

  1457. chapter 2.

  1458. Philippians,

  1459. Galatians,

  1460. Ephesians,

  1461. Philippians

    Philippians 2 chapter mention

  1462. chapter 2.

  1463. Again,

  1464. if somebody

  1465. has a page

  1466. number just

  1467. to help us

  1468. all.

  1469. 1-1-8-0.

  1470. Thereabouts.

  1471. Philippians

    Philippians 2 chapter mention

  1472. chapter 2,

  1473. anyway.

  1474. Philippians

    Philippians 2 chapter mention

  1475. chapter 2,

  1476. chapter 2.

  1477. So God

  1478. suffers

  1479. with us.

  1480. Chapter 2,

  1481. verse 6,

  1482. tells us

  1483. this.

  1484. Speaking of

  1485. Christ,

  1486. verse 6,

  1487. who,

  1488. who,

  1489. who,

  1490. being in

  1491. very nature

  1492. God,

  1493. did not

  1494. consider

  1495. equality

  1496. with God

  1497. something to

  1498. be used

  1499. to his

  1500. own

  1501. advantage.

  1502. Rather,

  1503. he made

  1504. himself

  1505. nothing

  1506. by taking

  1507. the very

  1508. nature of

  1509. a servant

  1510. being made

  1511. in human

  1512. likeness.

  1513. God

  1514. became

  1515. one of

  1516. us.

  1517. He never

  1518. ever ceased

  1519. to be

  1520. God.

  1521. And yet,

  1522. he became

  1523. fully human.

  1524. And in

  1525. Christ,

  1526. God lived

  1527. and experienced

  1528. the pains

  1529. and hurts

  1530. of life.

  1531. He understands

  1532. what it is

  1533. to live

  1534. in a broken

  1535. and a dying

  1536. world.

  1537. And when

  1538. personal suffering

  1539. came to

  1540. Christ,

  1541. look closely

  1542. at verse 6.

  1543. He did

  1544. not consider

  1545. equality

  1546. with God

  1547. something to

  1548. be used

  1549. to his

  1550. own

  1551. advantage.

  1552. So,

  1553. Christ did

  1554. not exploit

  1555. his

  1556. Godness

  1557. or his

  1558. divinity

  1559. and somehow

  1560. escape the

  1561. suffering.

  1562. He submitted

  1563. himself to

  1564. suffering.

  1565. Something bad

  1566. came along.

  1567. It wasn't

  1568. that he kind

  1569. of flicked

  1570. the God

  1571. switch and

  1572. go,

  1573. right,

  1574. let's end

  1575. the suffering

  1576. here.

  1577. No,

  1578. he remained

  1579. fully God

  1580. and as

  1581. fully man

  1582. he submitted

  1583. himself

  1584. to the

  1585. frustrations

  1586. and the

  1587. broken and

  1588. decaying and

  1589. dying world.

  1590. You see,

  1591. here we see

  1592. a God

  1593. who desperately

  1594. loves us

  1595. and cares

  1596. for us,

  1597. that he

  1598. would suffer

  1599. with us.

  1600. He enters

  1601. our pain

  1602. so that

  1603. when we

  1604. cry out

  1605. to God,

  1606. he understands.

  1607. A God

  1608. who knows.

  1609. Not just

  1610. because he's

  1611. God,

  1612. but because

  1613. he's experienced

  1614. it himself.

  1615. God is not

  1616. distant and

  1617. removed,

  1618. unfeeling and

  1619. uncaring.

  1620. He knows

  1621. your hurts.

  1622. He subjected

  1623. himself to

  1624. suffering.

  1625. He suffers

  1626. with you.

  1627. suffering.

  1628. But more

  1629. than that,

  1630. he suffers

  1631. for us.

  1632. Look at

  1633. verse 8.

  1634. Being found

  1635. in appearance

  1636. as a man,

  1637. he humbled

  1638. himself

  1639. by becoming

  1640. obedient to

  1641. death,

  1642. even death

  1643. on the cross.

  1644. The cross

  1645. of God

  1646. is the

  1647. ultimate

  1648. suffering

  1649. of God.

  1650. God

  1651. suffers

  1652. for us.

  1653. We talked

  1654. earlier about

  1655. God's judgment

  1656. on the world

  1657. because of

  1658. sinful rebellion

  1659. and that

  1660. judgment would

  1661. continue for

  1662. an eternity

  1663. unless God

  1664. did something

  1665. about it.

  1666. And the

  1667. glorious news

  1668. is God

  1669. has done

  1670. something about

  1671. it.

  1672. He stepped

  1673. in.

  1674. The hope

  1675. was,

  1676. Romans 8

    Romans 8:20

  1677. verse 20,

  1678. 21,

  1679. was that

  1680. creation would

  1681. be liberated

  1682. from its

  1683. bondage

  1684. of decay.

  1685. And he

  1686. does that

  1687. by intervening

  1688. into the

  1689. world in

  1690. the person

  1691. of his

  1692. Son,

  1693. taking on

  1694. himself my

  1695. sin and

  1696. your sin,

  1697. suffering the

  1698. judgment of

  1699. God for

  1700. us.

  1701. And as

  1702. Christ hung

  1703. on the

  1704. cross,

  1705. as he

  1706. experienced

  1707. that suffering,

  1708. he cried

  1709. out,

  1710. my God,

  1711. my God,

  1712. why have

  1713. you forsaken

  1714. me?

  1715. And at

  1716. that moment,

  1717. Christ suffers

  1718. the abandonment

  1719. of God.

  1720. He suffers

  1721. in its

  1722. fullest sense,

  1723. the wrath

  1724. of God.

  1725. He suffers

  1726. hell.

  1727. He suffers

  1728. for me.

  1729. He suffers

  1730. for you.

  1731. And as we

  1732. trust him,

  1733. we can be

  1734. forgiven and

  1735. freed from

  1736. an eternal

  1737. judgment to

  1738. come.

  1739. Set free

  1740. from what

  1741. our sins

  1742. deserve,

  1743. liberated so

  1744. that one

  1745. day we

  1746. might receive

  1747. the redemption

  1748. of our

  1749. bodies.

  1750. God suffers

  1751. the ultimate

  1752. suffering for

  1753. us so that

  1754. we do not

  1755. have to

  1756. suffer

  1757. eternally.

  1758. You see,

  1759. suffering

  1760. causes us

  1761. and says,

  1762. look at the

  1763. cross.

  1764. Come and

  1765. see the

  1766. God who

  1767. suffers with

  1768. us, but

  1769. look at the

  1770. God who

  1771. suffers for

  1772. you.

  1773. A God who

  1774. loves you

  1775. deeply and

  1776. immensely.

  1777. Out of

  1778. compassion and

  1779. mercy, he

  1780. comes to

  1781. deal with

  1782. our suffering.

  1783. In all our

  1784. questions, we

  1785. must never

  1786. forget that

  1787. when God

  1788. chose suffering

  1789. for this

  1790. world, he

  1791. chose suffering

  1792. for himself.

  1793. and it's

  1794. through his

  1795. suffering that

  1796. will come

  1797. our healing.

  1798. So where

  1799. does this

  1800. leave us?

  1801. Trust God.

  1802. I'm aware

  1803. because I

  1804. have scribbled

  1805. out, rewritten,

  1806. re-read,

  1807. scribbled out

  1808. again, because

  1809. I don't have my

  1810. questions answered.

  1811. Things remain

  1812. unresolved in

  1813. my mind.

  1814. We can still

  1815. be angry.

  1816. I get that.

  1817. Anger is

  1818. understandable.

  1819. We can still

  1820. be hurting.

  1821. It's natural.

  1822. Our hurts

  1823. don't go

  1824. away.

  1825. It's hard for

  1826. us to reconcile

  1827. why God

  1828. wills and

  1829. permits and

  1830. at times

  1831. causes

  1832. suffering.

  1833. And then at

  1834. the same time

  1835. we read that

  1836. he submits

  1837. to suffering

  1838. and he

  1839. suffers with

  1840. us and

  1841. for us

  1842. so that

  1843. all suffering

  1844. would come

  1845. to an end.

  1846. And we

  1847. can't cope

  1848. with it.

  1849. We can't

  1850. hold this

  1851. together.

  1852. And yet

  1853. it's true.

  1854. Where we

  1855. cannot see

  1856. what is

  1857. going on

  1858. or make

  1859. sense of

  1860. what is

  1861. happening,

  1862. what we

  1863. can see

  1864. is a

  1865. God who

  1866. is in

  1867. control of

  1868. all things,

  1869. who is

  1870. over every

  1871. detail of

  1872. your life

  1873. and over

  1874. everything in

  1875. this world,

  1876. over Satan

  1877. himself.

  1878. Therefore,

  1879. we can

  1880. trust him.

  1881. In our

  1882. questioning,

  1883. let God

  1884. answer.

  1885. Listen

  1886. to what

  1887. he says.

  1888. Let God

  1889. be God.

  1890. Trust the

  1891. God who

  1892. suffers with

  1893. us and

  1894. for us

  1895. to end

  1896. all

  1897. suffering.

  1898. Let's

  1899. pray.

  1900. Let's

  1901. pray.

  1902. Let's

  1903. pray.

  1904. Let's

  1905. pray.

  1906. Let's

  1907. pray.

  1908. Let's

  1909. pray.

  1910. Let's

  1911. pray.

  1912. Let's

  1913. pray.

  1914. Let's

  1915. pray.

  1916. Let's

  1917. pray.

  1918. Lord God,

  1919. we

  1920. struggle

  1921. right now.

  1922. We're

  1923. struggling.

  1924. We

  1925. struggle to

  1926. understand

  1927. everything.

  1928. We

  1929. struggle to

  1930. understand the

  1931. suffering that

  1932. we are

  1933. experiencing

  1934. or we

  1935. see loved

  1936. ones going

  1937. through.

  1938. We

  1939. confess that

  1940. we can be

  1941. angry.

  1942. And we

  1943. bring it

  1944. all before

  1945. you and

  1946. ask that

  1947. you would

  1948. help us

  1949. to trust

  1950. you as

  1951. the God

  1952. who is

  1953. over all

  1954. things,

  1955. the God

  1956. who came

  1957. to suffer

  1958. for us

  1959. to end

  1960. all

  1961. suffering

  1962. so that

  1963. we might

  1964. have life

  1965. with you.

  1966. Help us

  1967. to walk

  1968. with you

  1969. through

  1970. these

  1971. series

  1972. of talks.

  1973. Father,

  1974. would you

  1975. teach us

  1976. and would

  1977. you help

  1978. us where

  1979. we cannot

  1980. see to

  1981. keep

  1982. trusting you

  1983. to know

  1984. that you

  1985. have us

  1986. in your

  1987. arms of

  1988. love and

  1989. you will

  1990. never,

  1991. ever let

  1992. us go.

  1993. Help us.

  1994. In Jesus'

  1995. name we

  1996. pray.

  1997. Amen.
