  1. your love, and that they would not only know but experience you walking with us through these times.

  2. Father, as we turn to your word now, we ask that you would help us,

  3. that we might hear clearly what you are saying,

  4. and that you would give us grace that we may apply it to our lives.

  5. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.

  6. Amen.

  7. Well, this morning we're looking at the theme that God has promised suffering,

  8. and learning how to grieve well.

  9. Very often our experiences are that in times of struggling,

  10. and Pete mentioned this, is that we immediately want things to change.

  11. We want things to end.

  12. Sometimes we want the suffering to come to a conclusion.

  13. Well, sometimes we need to learn to grieve.

  14. In fact, I think it's important that we learn to grieve.

  15. So three big things we're going to look at this morning.

  16. First, grieving will come.

  17. We stood by side, dressed in our school uniforms,

  18. and as we stood alongside each other, we watched as the coffin was being carried out.

  19. Richard was liked by everyone.

  20. He was a fun kind of guy.

  21. He loved his sport.

  22. He was generous and he was kind,

  23. but yet a tragic accident ended Richard's life,

  24. and he was no longer with us.

  25. In the car park, I remember walking over to Richard's dad.

  26. No words were ever exchanged.

  27. We just embraced and cried.

  28. As a young teen, that was my first real experience of grief.

  29. And Psalm 90 reminds us,

  30. Our days may come to 70 years or 80,

  31. if our strength endures.

  32. Yet the best of them are but trouble and sorrow,

  33. for they quickly pass and we fly away.

  34. It's a solemn reminder that we live in a broken and disordered world

  35. that ends in death.

  36. It's unavoidable.

  37. And the message of the Bible from beginning to end is very clear.

  38. Live long enough and you will suffer.

  39. Listen to God's word through Isaiah the prophet.

  40. But now this is what the Lord says,

  41. He who created you, Jacob, he who formed you, Israel.

  42. Do not fear, for I have redeemed you.

  43. I have summoned you by name.

  44. You are mine.

  45. When you pass through the waters,

  46. I will be with you.

  47. And when you pass through the rivers,

  48. they will not sweep over you.

  49. When you walk through the fire,

  50. you will not be burned.

  51. The flames will not set you ablaze.

  52. Not if,

  53. but when.

  54. When you pass through the waters,

  55. when you walk through the fire.

  56. James tells us the same.

  57. He says,

  58. Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters,

  59. whenever you face trials of many kinds.

  60. Not if you will face trials,

  61. but whenever you face trials.

  62. Now both Isaiah and James are writing to God's people,

  63. those whom God has redeemed and called to himself followers.

  64. Yet they are told to prepare for days of suffering.

  65. We should never assume that just because we trust God,

  66. that we won't suffer.

  67. You will go through the furnace.

  68. You will walk through painful trials.

  69. You will face the darkness.

  70. We will all grieve.

  71. So first, grieving will come.

  72. Second, grieving is painful.

  73. It's painful because when we grieve,

  74. it's because we're mourning the loss of someone or something.

  75. A mother grieves

  76. because she has lost her son through cancer.

  77. Pete grieves

  78. because he's lost a cousin and a brother.

  79. A husband can grieve

  80. because he's lost the family home through unemployment.

  81. A young couple can grieve

  82. because their hopes and dreams are crushed

  83. when a tragedy strikes.

  84. You see, when suffering comes,

  85. it takes the people we love

  86. and the things that we most value.

  87. And in a moment, they are gone,

  88. ripped from the clutches of our arms.

  89. And it is terribly painful.

  90. There are three ways, I think,

  91. that the Bible speaks about our grief.

  92. Three emotions we experience in times of struggle.

  93. And to help us look at this,

  94. we're going to look at the Psalms together.

  95. And one of the things about the Psalms is

  96. they show us and they record for us

  97. the personal experiences

  98. of those who are going through hard times.

  99. And as we listen to these experiences,

  100. as we listen to these true life accounts,

  101. they help us to grieve.

  102. The first emotion,

  103. the first kind of grief I think we encounter

  104. in times of loss

  105. is anger.

  106. When we go through the waters,

  107. we can be angry.

  108. Look at Psalm 77 with me.

  109. Psalm 77.

  110. Psalm 77.

  111. Psalm 77.

  112. Psalm 77.

  113. Psalm 77.

  114. Psalm 77.

  115. Starting at verse 1.

  116. I cried out to God for help.

  117. I cried out to God to hear me.

  118. When I was in distress,

  119. I sought the Lord.

  120. At night,

  121. I stretched out untiring hands

  122. and would not be comforted.

  123. In other words,

  124. the comfort didn't come.

  125. I remembered you,

  126. God,

  127. and I groaned.

  128. I meditated

  129. and my spirit grew faint.

  130. You kept my eyes from closing.

  131. I was too troubled to speak.

  132. I thought about the former days,

  133. the years of long ago.

  134. I remembered my songs in the night.

  135. My heart meditated

  136. and my spirit asked,

  137. Will the Lord reject forever?

  138. Will he never show his favor again?

  139. Has his unfailing love vanished forever?

  140. Has his promise failed for all time?

  141. Has God forgotten to be merciful?

  142. Has he in anger withheld his compassion?

  143. Question after question.

  144. Why are you doing this?

  145. Where are you?

  146. What's it all for?

  147. This is raw emotion.

  148. He's angry at God.

  149. Look back at verse 5.

  150. I thought about the former days,

  151. the years of long ago.

  152. I remembered my songs of joy.

  153. There are songs of joy he's talking about in the night.

  154. I looked back on my life,

  155. all those good times.

  156. I remember when my life was happy,

  157. when we were together.

  158. But now she's gone.

  159. I remember when we walked and talked.

  160. But now they don't even recognize me.

  161. The writer of Psalm 22

  162. says what we all want to say.

  163. My God, my God,

  164. why have you forsaken me?

  165. Why are you so far from saving me?

  166. So far from my cry of anguish.

  167. My God, I cry out by day,

  168. but you do not answer by night,

  169. but I find no rest.

  170. Isn't that how we often feel?

  171. Angry with God.

  172. Job certainly did.

  173. Just have a look back to Job 19.

  174. It comes just before the Psalms.

  175. Job 19.

  176. And verse 7.

  177. So this is a cry towards God.

  178. He says,

  179. Though I cry violence,

  180. I get no response.

  181. Though I call for help,

  182. there is no justice.

  183. God has blocked my way

  184. so that I cannot pass.

  185. God has shrouded my paths in darkness.

  186. God has stripped me of my honor

  187. and removed the crown from my head.

  188. God tears me down on every side

  189. till I am gone.

  190. God uproots my hope like a tree.

  191. God's anger burns against me.

  192. God counts me among his enemies.

  193. God's troops advance in force.

  194. They build a siege ramp against me

  195. and encamp around my tent.

  196. Remember from last week

  197. that Job had lost all his possessions.

  198. He had lost his family.

  199. He had lost his health.

  200. And here he expresses his anger.

  201. He shouts at God

  202. and accuses God of being like an invading army

  203. that is swept into his life,

  204. taking away and destroying

  205. what is most valuable

  206. and precious to him.

  207. Anger is an expression

  208. of our grief.

  209. So I wonder if somebody wouldn't mind

  210. closing the doors.

  211. I think there's doors open there.

  212. Thank you.

  213. So second,

  214. so first,

  215. response

  216. in times of struggle

  217. and suffering

  218. of grieving

  219. is one of anger.

  220. The second is sorrow.

  221. When we go through trials,

  222. we can be full of sorrow.

  223. Have a look at Psalm 13.

  224. Psalm 13, verse 1.

    Psalms 13:1

  225. Psalm 13.

  226. How long, Lord,

  227. will you forget me forever?

  228. How long will you hide your face from me?

  229. How long must I wrestle with my thoughts

  230. and day after day have sorrow in my heart?

  231. How long will my enemy triumph over me?

  232. How long has God forgotten me?

  233. He doesn't love me.

  234. He doesn't care.

  235. And with unanswered questions,

  236. all we are left with is sorrow.

  237. Broken hearts that seem to find no comfort.

  238. Flick back to Psalm 6.

  239. Here the psalmist again pours out his sorrow.

  240. Psalm 6, verse 6.

    Psalms 6:6

  241. I am worn out from my groany.

  242. All night long I flood my bed with weeping

  243. and drench my couch with tears.

  244. My eyes grow weak with sorrow.

  245. They fail because of all my foes.

  246. You see, when all the shouting is done,

  247. when the anger subsides and no answers come,

  248. then all that is left is sorrow.

  249. All night long I flood my bed with weeping

  250. and drench my couch with tears.

  251. Listen to this account written by Dustin.

  252. I don't know him, but read his story this week.

  253. He recounts his family's sorrow.

  254. He says,

  255. This was certainly what my wife and I experienced

  256. after our son Owen died in 2003.

  257. We were living in the Middle East

  258. and as Kelly went into labour

  259. we were medically evacuated to Istanbul, Turkey

  260. where premature babies have a better chance of survival.

  261. He was born October the 3rd

  262. but he only lived for 20 minutes.

  263. I saw him kicking and moving

  264. and heard him give one little cry

  265. but that was it.

  266. Our firstborn had died.

  267. The pain was unlike anything we had ever experienced.

  268. We felt alone.

  269. A few nights after Owen died

  270. my wife stayed up for hours

  271. scouring the scriptures for hope and comfort.

  272. She finally fell asleep

  273. more discouraged than ever

  274. because she found none.

  275. Of course it was there

  276. but when we are in the depths of pain

  277. we often can't see it

  278. let alone feel it.

  279. Sorrow

  280. is an expression

  281. of our grief.

  282. The third expression

  283. of our grief

  284. I think is one of despair.

  285. Turn to Psalm 88.

  286. As we face into the darkness

  287. of our struggles

  288. sometimes our grief

  289. is one of just

  290. utter despair.

  291. The Hebrew title of this Psalm

  292. is the suffering

  293. of affliction.

  294. It's almost like the suffering

  295. of suffering.

  296. It's the most discouraging

  297. and despairing Psalm written

  298. perhaps

  299. the most discouraging

  300. in all

  301. of Scripture.

  302. Follow with me

  303. as I read

  304. verse 1

  305. Lord

  306. you are the God

  307. who saves me

  308. day and night

  309. I cry out to you

  310. may my prayer

  311. come before you

  312. turn your ear

  313. to my cry.

  314. I am overwhelmed

  315. with troubles

  316. and my life

  317. draws near to death.

  318. I am counted

  319. among those

  320. who go down

  321. to the pit.

  322. I am like one

  323. without strength.

  324. I am set apart

  325. from the dead

  326. like the slain

  327. who lie in the grave

  328. whom you remember

  329. no more

  330. who are cut off

  331. from your care.

  332. Verse 15

  333. From my youth

  334. I have suffered

  335. and been close to death.

  336. I have borne

  337. your terrors

  338. and I am in despair.

  339. Your wrath

  340. has swept over me

  341. your terrors

  342. have destroyed me

  343. all day long

  344. they surround me

  345. like a flood

  346. they have completely

  347. engulfed me.

  348. You have taken

  349. from me

  350. friend

  351. and neighbour.

  352. Darkness

  353. is my closest friend.

  354. This writer

  355. is grieving.

  356. In fact

  357. it seems

  358. he has been grieving

  359. most of his life.

  360. Look at verse 15

  361. From my youth

  362. I have suffered.

  363. There seems

  364. to have been

  365. no let up

  366. throughout

  367. verse 17

  368. all day long.

  369. They surround

  370. me like a flood.

  371. Every day

  372. is like

  373. it's going

  374. to be his last.

  375. But he's done

  376. with being angry.

  377. There are no more

  378. tears to be shed

  379. at night.

  380. The tears

  381. have run dry

  382. instead

  383. it is now

  384. just despair.

  385. Look at the end

  386. of verse 18

  387. Darkness

  388. is my closest

  389. friend.

  390. The psalm

  391. ends without

  392. any hope.

  393. There is no

  394. Oh

  395. but I will yet

  396. praise the Lord.

  397. There is no

  398. yet this I know

  399. God will

  400. deliver me.

  401. The suffering

  402. has extinguished

  403. the light

  404. and all

  405. that is left

  406. is hopeless

  407. darkness.

  408. One writer

  409. said this

  410. about the psalm

  411. whoever

  412. devises

  413. from the

  414. scriptures

  415. a philosophy

  416. in which

  417. everything

  418. turns out

  419. right

  420. has to

  421. begin by

  422. tearing

  423. this page

  424. out

  425. of the

  426. Bible.

  427. Now some

  428. of you

  429. here know

  430. what this

  431. writer is

  432. talking about.

  433. Some of you

  434. have been

  435. in this

  436. darkness.

  437. Despair

  438. is an

  439. expression

  440. of our

  441. grief.

  442. But why

  443. do we have

  444. these expressions

  445. of grief?

  446. Why have

  447. they been

  448. written down

  449. for us?

  450. Well three

  451. reasons I

  452. think they

  453. are here

  454. for us.

  455. First

  456. they give

  457. us

  458. permission

  459. to grieve.

  460. We're not

  461. very good

  462. at handling

  463. grief are

  464. we?

  465. In our

  466. attempts to

  467. comfort one

  468. another we

  469. say things

  470. like well

  471. God is

  472. sovereign,

  473. God is

  474. in control,

  475. we just

  476. need to

  477. move on

  478. and get

  479. on.

  480. Well it's

  481. true God

  482. is sovereign.

  483. He is in

  484. control over

  485. our suffering.

  486. Yes God

  487. is with us

  488. in our

  489. pain even

  490. when we

  491. cannot see

  492. it but

  493. it still

  494. hurts.

  495. God's

  496. control over

  497. our suffering

  498. does not

  499. take the

  500. pain out

  501. of suffering.

  502. Theological

  503. explanations

  504. do not

  505. end our

  506. hurts.

  507. We need

  508. to be able

  509. to grieve.

  510. We just

  511. need to

  512. cry.

  513. We don't

  514. have to

  515. grin and

  516. bear it.

  517. The

  518. Psalms teach

  519. us that

  520. this is

  521. right and

  522. normal.

  523. God is

  524. giving us

  525. permission.

  526. We're not

  527. meant to

  528. understand the

  529. things we

  530. go through.

  531. We are

  532. not meant

  533. to be

  534. strong and

  535. brave.

  536. We're not

  537. meant to

  538. have it all

  539. together.

  540. We need

  541. to learn

  542. to grieve.

  543. Second,

  544. our grief

  545. is an

  546. expression of

  547. faith.

  548. I wonder

  549. if you

  550. noticed as

  551. we look

  552. in each

  553. of these

  554. Psalms,

  555. whether it

  556. was one

  557. of anger

  558. or sorrow

  559. or times

  560. of despair,

  561. it's all

  562. spoken out

  563. to God.

  564. There are

  565. no answers,

  566. there are

  567. no comfort,

  568. but yet

  569. all of

  570. their

  571. questions,

  572. all of

  573. their anger,

  574. their

  575. disappointments

  576. is all

  577. directed

  578. towards God.

  579. And I

  580. want us

  581. to see

  582. this,

  583. that this

  584. is not

  585. sinful.

  586. It is

  587. not wrong

  588. to do

  589. this.

  590. It is

  591. an expression

  592. of our

  593. faith.

  594. Sometimes

  595. people will

  596. come alongside

  597. you and

  598. say,

  599. you need

  600. to have

  601. more faith.

  602. If you

  603. have faith,

  604. your grief

  605. will be

  606. removed and

  607. will be

  608. replaced with

  609. healing and

  610. joy.

  611. No, we

  612. don't need

  613. more faith.

  614. Grief is

  615. an expression

  616. of our

  617. faith.

  618. As we

  619. grieve,

  620. we are

  621. learning to

  622. lean on

  623. God.

  624. Here's how

  625. one writer

  626. put it.

  627. As we

  628. grieve,

  629. we strengthen

  630. our faith.

  631. It enables

  632. us to

  633. trust more

  634. in God

  635. and his

  636. resources

  637. than in

  638. ourselves.

  639. With every

  640. loss, we

  641. are reminded

  642. of the fact

  643. that we

  644. are not

  645. in control

  646. and we

  647. are not

  648. self-sufficient.

  649. Every loss

  650. allows us

  651. to rest

  652. in the

  653. grace of

  654. God,

  655. enabling us

  656. to change

  657. our perspective

  658. and allow

  659. our hope

  660. and anticipation

  661. of the

  662. life to

  663. come to

  664. grow.

  665. So we

  666. have

  667. permission

  668. to grieve.

  669. Grief

  670. is an

  671. expression of

  672. our faith.

  673. And then

  674. third, grief

  675. will give

  676. way to

  677. joy.

  678. Psalm 30

    Psalms 30:5

  679. verse 5

  680. says this,

  681. Weeping

  682. may stay

  683. for the

  684. night,

  685. but rejoicing

  686. comes in

  687. the morning.

  688. Just as

  689. the darkness

  690. of the

  691. night is

  692. dispelled

  693. by the

  694. rising sun,

  695. so with

  696. the coming

  697. of Jesus

  698. Christ,

  699. the suffering

  700. will be

  701. removed and

  702. replaced with

  703. joy.

  704. As sure

  705. as and

  706. certain as

  707. the sun

  708. will rise

  709. every

  710. morning,

  711. so we

  712. can be

  713. absolutely

  714. sure with

  715. the coming

  716. of Jesus.

  717. The

  718. darkness

  719. will end,

  720. sorrow

  721. will cease,

  722. and grieving

  723. will be no

  724. more.

  725. None of

  726. us knows

  727. how long

  728. the night

  729. will last,

  730. but morning

  731. is coming.

  732. Weeping

  733. may be

  734. our

  735. experience.

  736. The night

  737. may drag

  738. on,

  739. but joy

  740. awaits.

  741. You see,

  742. grief

  743. changes

  744. our

  745. perspective

  746. and allows

  747. us to

  748. rest,

  749. to depend

  750. upon God.

  751. And

  752. anticipation

  753. of the

  754. life to

  755. come

  756. grows.

  757. grief

  758. will

  759. come.

  760. Grieving

  761. will come.

  762. Grieving

  763. is painful.

  764. And then

  765. third,

  766. grieving

  767. for us.

  768. As we

  769. grieve,

  770. we need

  771. to remember

  772. that God

  773. grieves

  774. with us

  775. and for

  776. us.

  777. I'd like

  778. us to

  779. look to

  780. Isaiah

  781. 43,

  782. so just

  783. go forward

  784. from

  785. Sam

  786. until

  787. you

  788. come to

  789. Isaiah.

  790. Sam's

  791. Proverbs

  792. Song of

  793. Solomon

  794. or

  795. Ecclesiastes

  796. Song of

  797. Solomon,

  798. Isaiah

  799. 43.

  800. This is

  801. where we

  802. started

  803. this morning,

  804. Isaiah

    Isaiah 43:1

  805. 43,

  806. verse

  807. 1.

  808. 1.

  809. 1.

  810. 1.

  811. 1.

  812. 1.

  813. 1.

  814. 1.

  815. 1.

  816. 1.

  817. 1.

  818. 1.

  819. 1.

  820. 1.

  821. 1.

  822. Isaiah

  823. 43,

  824. starting

  825. at

  826. verse 1.

  827. But now

  828. this is

  829. what the

  830. Lord says,

  831. He who

  832. created

  833. you,

  834. Jacob,

  835. He who

  836. formed

  837. you,

  838. Israel,

  839. do not

  840. fear,

  841. for I

  842. have

  843. redeemed

  844. you.

  845. I

  846. have

  847. summoned

  848. you by

  849. name.

  850. You

  851. are

  852. mine.

  853. When

  854. you pass

  855. through

  856. the

  857. water,

  858. waters,

  859. I will

  860. be with

  861. you.

  862. And when

  863. you pass

  864. through the

  865. rivers,

  866. they will

  867. not sweep

  868. over you.

  869. When you

  870. walk through

  871. the fire,

  872. you will

  873. not be

  874. burned.

  875. The flames

  876. will not

  877. set you

  878. ablaze.

  879. Now

  880. verse 2

  881. is a

  882. promise

  883. and a

  884. problem.

  885. The

  886. promise is

  887. clear,

  888. God is

  889. with us,

  890. we will

  891. not be

  892. overcome.

  893. And

  894. here is

  895. the

  896. problem.

  897. The

  898. problem

  899. is

  900. unanswered

  901. prayers

  902. and no

  903. respite

  904. makes us

  905. feel God

  906. is not

  907. with us.

  908. When we

  909. do pass

  910. through the

  911. rivers,

  912. it is

  913. like they

  914. do sweep

  915. over us

  916. and we

  917. feel like

  918. we are

  919. drowning

  920. and we

  921. can't

  922. breathe.

  923. And when

  924. we walk

  925. through the

  926. fire of

  927. struggle,

  928. it is

  929. as if we

  930. are burning

  931. up.

  932. we

  933. experience

  934. no comfort

  935. or relief.

  936. So how

  937. can God

  938. say he

  939. is with

  940. us?

  941. And how

  942. can he

  943. say the

  944. flames

  945. will not

  946. touch

  947. us?

  948. Well,

  949. what God

  950. has promised

  951. has been

  952. fulfilled.

  953. He came

  954. and entered

  955. into our

  956. grief

  957. to redeem

  958. us so

  959. that he

  960. might call

  961. us and

  962. might say

  963. over us

  964. mine.

  965. You

  966. belong to

  967. me so

  968. that you

  969. might know

  970. me forever.

  971. Have a

  972. look at

  973. Isaiah 53,

  974. just a

  975. couple of

  976. chapters on.

  977. Keep in

  978. mind the

  979. promise that

  980. God says

  981. we will

  982. walk through

  983. those rivers,

  984. we will

  985. go through

  986. the

  987. furnace.

  988. Isaiah 53,

  989. this is

  990. speaking of

  991. God,

  992. but yet

  993. pointing

  994. forward to

  995. the God

  996. man Jesus

  997. Christ who

  998. was to

  999. come.

  1000. God knows

  1001. what it is

  1002. to suffer.

  1003. He enters

  1004. into our

  1005. grief.

  1006. Chapter

  1007. 53,

  1008. verse 3.

  1009. He was

  1010. despised and

  1011. rejected by

  1012. mankind,

  1013. a man of

  1014. suffering and

  1015. familiar with

  1016. pain.

  1017. Like one

  1018. from whom

  1019. people hide

  1020. their faces,

  1021. he was

  1022. despised and

  1023. we held

  1024. him in

  1025. low esteem.

  1026. But more

  1027. than that,

  1028. God entered

  1029. our grief

  1030. to deal

  1031. with our

  1032. sin so

  1033. that we

  1034. might know

  1035. God with

  1036. us.

  1037. Verse 4,

  1038. surely he

  1039. took up

  1040. our pain

  1041. and bore

  1042. our suffering.

  1043. Yet we

  1044. considered him

  1045. punished by

  1046. God,

  1047. stricken by

  1048. him and

  1049. afflicted.

  1050. But he

  1051. was pierced

  1052. for our

  1053. transgressions.

  1054. He was

  1055. crushed for

  1056. our iniquities.

  1057. The punishment

  1058. that brought

  1059. us peace

  1060. was on him

  1061. and by

  1062. his wounds,

  1063. by his

  1064. sufferings,

  1065. we are

  1066. healed.

  1067. How do

  1068. we know

  1069. this is

  1070. true?

  1071. How do

  1072. we know

  1073. this is

  1074. what God

  1075. has done

  1076. for us?

  1077. Well,

  1078. have a look

  1079. at Matthew

    Matthew 26 chapter mention

  1080. chapter 26.

  1081. The first

  1082. book in the

  1083. New Testament,

  1084. Matthew

    Matthew 26 chapter mention

  1085. chapter 26

  1086. and verse

  1087. 37.

  1088. Matthew

  1089. 26.

  1090. Here,

  1091. God,

  1092. in the

  1093. person of

  1094. Jesus,

  1095. is facing

  1096. his own

  1097. death and

  1098. suffering on

  1099. the cross

  1100. and uses

  1101. those very

  1102. words from

  1103. Isaiah 53

  1104. as his

  1105. own as

  1106. he cries

  1107. out,

  1108. his own

  1109. grief to

  1110. God.

  1111. Verse 37.

  1112. Jesus took

  1113. Peter and

  1114. the two

  1115. sons of

  1116. Zebedee

  1117. along with

  1118. him and

  1119. he began

  1120. to be

  1121. sorrowful

  1122. and troubled,

  1123. an expression

  1124. of grief,

  1125. of sorrow

  1126. and despair.

  1127. Then he

  1128. said to

  1129. them,

  1130. my soul

  1131. is overwhelmed

  1132. with sorrow

  1133. to the

  1134. point of

  1135. death.

  1136. stay

  1137. here and

  1138. keep

  1139. watch

  1140. with

  1141. me.

  1142. The

  1143. agony

  1144. of

  1145. death

  1146. and

  1147. judgment

  1148. stares

  1149. him in

  1150. the

  1151. face.

  1152. It

  1153. doesn't

  1154. just

  1155. bring

  1156. sorrow,

  1157. but it's

  1158. a complete

  1159. overwhelming

  1160. of

  1161. utter

  1162. despair.

  1163. Verse 39,

  1164. going a

  1165. little

  1166. further,

  1167. he fell

  1168. with his

  1169. face to

  1170. the

  1171. ground

  1172. and

  1173. prayed,

  1174. my

  1175. father,

  1176. if it

  1177. is

  1178. possible,

  1179. take

  1180. this

  1181. cup

  1182. from

  1183. me,

  1184. yet

  1185. not

  1186. as

  1187. I

  1188. will,

  1189. but

  1190. as

  1191. you

  1192. will.

  1193. Jesus

  1194. grieves

  1195. for us.

  1196. He is

  1197. willing to

  1198. go through

  1199. our

  1200. death

  1201. and our

  1202. suffering

  1203. for our

  1204. sin,

  1205. because

  1206. here is

  1207. Jesus

  1208. hung on

  1209. the

  1210. cross.

  1211. He

  1212. passes

  1213. through

  1214. the river

  1215. for us.

  1216. He

  1217. walks

  1218. through

  1219. the

  1220. fire

  1221. for us.

  1222. He

  1223. is

  1224. overcome

  1225. by the

  1226. waters

  1227. of

  1228. judgment.

  1229. The

  1230. flames

  1231. of

  1232. God's

  1233. wrath

  1234. consume

  1235. him.

  1236. Jesus

  1237. dies,

  1238. but as

  1239. he dies

  1240. for us,

  1241. he dies

  1242. so that

  1243. by his

  1244. sufferings

  1245. and by

  1246. his

  1247. wounds

  1248. we are

  1249. healed,

  1250. forgiven

  1251. of all

  1252. of our

  1253. sins so

  1254. that we

  1255. might belong

  1256. to him

  1257. and never

  1258. lose him.

  1259. We have

  1260. been

  1261. redeemed

  1262. so that

  1263. we may

  1264. experience

  1265. a new

  1266. creation

  1267. where

  1268. there

  1269. is

  1270. no

  1271. more

  1272. grieving

  1273. and we

  1274. will

  1275. receive

  1276. our

  1277. new

  1278. bodies

  1279. that

  1280. will

  1281. never

  1282. suffer

  1283. again.

  1284. You

  1285. see,

  1286. whatever

  1287. we

  1288. lose

  1289. because

  1290. of our

  1291. suffering,

  1292. whether it's

  1293. our health,

  1294. our loved

  1295. ones,

  1296. our dreams

  1297. or our

  1298. joys,

  1299. because

  1300. Christ

  1301. suffered

  1302. for us,

  1303. we will

  1304. never,

  1305. ever,

  1306. ever,

  1307. ever

  1308. lose

  1309. God.

  1310. He is

  1311. with us

  1312. today

  1313. and we

  1314. will

  1315. enjoy him

  1316. for an

  1317. eternity

  1318. because by

  1319. his wounds

  1320. we are

  1321. healed.

  1322. And so

  1323. whatever our

  1324. grief,

  1325. whatever our

  1326. struggle we

  1327. may be in

  1328. today,

  1329. whatever lies

  1330. in the

  1331. future,

  1332. we can

  1333. confidently

  1334. say,

  1335. when I

  1336. pass through

  1337. the waters,

  1338. he will

  1339. be with

  1340. me.

  1341. And when

  1342. I pass

  1343. through the

  1344. rivers,

  1345. they will

  1346. not sweep

  1347. over me.

  1348. And when

  1349. I walk

  1350. through the

  1351. fire,

  1352. I will

  1353. not be

  1354. burned.

  1355. The flames

  1356. will not

  1357. set me

  1358. ablaze.

  1359. We may

  1360. lose much

  1361. in this

  1362. life,

  1363. but we

  1364. will never

  1365. ever

  1366. lose

  1367. God.

  1368. He will

  1369. be with

  1370. us and

  1371. we will

  1372. be with

  1373. him for

  1374. all

  1375. eternity.

  1376. Learn,

  1377. my friends,

  1378. my brothers

  1379. and sisters,

  1380. learn that

  1381. we at

  1382. times need

  1383. to grieve

  1384. and cry

  1385. out to

  1386. God.

  1387. Let's

  1388. pray.

  1389. go

  1390. and

  1391. to

  1392. to
