  1. Romans chapter 8, starting at verse 18.

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  2. Romans 8, starting at verse 18.

  3. I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.

  4. For the creation waits in eager expectation for the children of God to be revealed.

  5. For the creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice, but by the will of the one who subjected it,

  6. in hope that the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into freedom and glory of the children of God.

  7. We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time.

  8. Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption to sonship, the redemption of our bodies.

  9. For in this hope we were saved.

  10. But hope that is seen is no hope at all.

  11. Who hopes for what they already have?

  12. But if we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently.

  13. Let's pray.

  14. Father God, we thank you for your people.

  15. We thank you for Helen.

  16. And we thank you for the story of her life.

  17. And above all, for your grace and your strength to Helen in times of suffering and struggle.

  18. We ask that you would continue to strengthen Helen and give her grace each and every day.

  19. And in moments of sadness and heartache, you would surround her with your love and care.

  20. And you would continue to use her story, a testimony of your grace and goodness to her.

  21. To be a means of hope and of encouragement and of pointing others to the Lord Jesus Christ.

  22. And the glorious hope that he has for the children of God.

  23. Help us now, Father, to hear your word carefully.

  24. And that you would apply it to our lives this day.

  25. In Jesus' name.

  26. Amen.

  27. Psalm 30 captures for us both the Christian experience and the Christian expectation.

  28. Weeping may stay for the night, but rejoicing comes in the morning.

  29. As we walk through our life experience, it is one of trials and suffering.

  30. We live in a world that is disordered and broken and eventually ends in death.

  31. Yet we also live with great expectation.

  32. We look forward to the day when Christ returns and restores and renews all things.

  33. Just as the darkness of the night is banished with the rising of the morning sun,

  34. so the darkness of this world will be dispelled by the glorious light of Christ's return.

  35. The hurts, the cries of pain, the tears will all be silenced by shrieks of laughter and shouts of joy.

  36. Weeping may stay for the night, but rejoicing comes in the morning.

  37. Isaiah the prophet spoke of this day.

  38. See, he says, I will create new heavens and a new earth.

  39. The former things will not be remembered, nor will they come to mind.

  40. But be glad and rejoice forever in what I will create.

  41. For I will create Jerusalem to be a delight and its people a joy.

  42. I will rejoice over Jerusalem and take delight in my people.

  43. The sound of weeping and of crying will be heard in it no more.

  44. Tears of sorrow will become tears of joy.

  45. Now this experience, this expectation is central to our text in Romans 8.

  46. And we're going to look at three things from it this morning.

  47. First, our present groaning, our future glory, and our gospel hope.

  48. So first, our present groaning.

  49. The world and our bodies are crying out in pain.

  50. Look at verse 22.

  51. We know that the whole creation has been groaning.

  52. The rumbles of an earthquake as great buildings collapse.

  53. The thundering waves of a tsunami which destroy whole villages.

  54. The unstoppable power of a tornado crashing through communities.

  55. This is the world groaning.

  56. It's in pain.

  57. But it's not just a physical, material world.

  58. Look at verse 23.

  59. Not only so, but we ourselves who have the first fruits of the Spirit groan inwardly.

  60. The cries of pain as cancer ravages our bodies.

  61. The agony of walking as arthritis seizes our joints.

  62. The suffering as our fragile and frail lives slowly break down.

  63. Our physical bodies are groaning.

  64. They are in pain.

  65. But all this groaning is not a helpless groaning.

  66. It is a groaning that is full of glorious expectation.

  67. Look again at verse 22.

  68. We know that the whole creation has been groaning.

  69. As in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time.

  70. The maternity ward is a place where we see both groaning and glory.

  71. Pain and joy.

  72. Pain and joy.

  73. Before the glory of holding a tiny baby in our arms comes the groaning and agony of giving birth.

  74. But it's a pain that is full of hope.

  75. Because you know that in the end you will hold new life in your arms.

  76. In the same way the groaning of this world and our bodies is like birth pains.

  77. They are signs of a new world and perfect bodies to come.

  78. With every drought and famine.

  79. With every disease and sickness.

  80. It is like the world and our bodies are crying out.

  81. Telling us that glory is coming.

  82. Now because of our groaning that will give way to glory.

  83. We need to be able to see our present sufferings in the light of future glory.

  84. We need to see, have a right perspective on our sufferings today.

  85. With the future glory to come.

  86. Look at verse 18.

  87. He says, I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.

  88. Consider, he says, contemplate.

  89. Think about.

  90. Meditate on this.

  91. The sufferings we experience now has nothing on the glory that is to come.

  92. Our suffering now is temporary.

  93. Glory is for eternity.

  94. Our suffering today brings cries of pain.

  95. Glory causes spontaneous shouts of joy.

  96. Our suffering ends in agony of death.

  97. Glory will celebrate the beauty of life.

  98. We may feel that our present sufferings are never going to come to an end.

  99. That this will be our only experience.

  100. Well after a hundred years in eternity.

  101. A thousand years in the new creation.

  102. Ten thousand years in glory.

  103. Our present experience.

  104. Our present experience.

  105. This blip on the line of infinity.

  106. Will not be remembered.

  107. Lord.

  108. In his letter to the church in Corinth.

  109. Paul put it like this.

  110. For our light and momentary troubles.

  111. Our achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.

  112. In contrast to the eternal weight of glory to come.

  113. Our sufferings today are momentary.

  114. They are light.

  115. So we may be groaning today.

  116. But glory is coming.

  117. So what is this glory we are looking forward to?

  118. Well he goes on to explain for us.

  119. Verse 19.

  120. For the creation waits in eager expectation for the children of God to be revealed.

  121. Creation is longing to see all that glory will be.

  122. Longing to see what the children of God are going to enjoy and experience.

  123. It's like creation is on its tippy toes.

  124. Trying to peer over the darkness.

  125. Over the sadness that there is.

  126. And trying to see what will be ahead.

  127. And this long awaited glory is pictured for us in two ways.

  128. First a liberated world.

  129. Verse 20.

  130. For the creation.

  131. This material physical world that we live in.

  132. Was subjected to frustration.

  133. Creation is frustrated.

  134. It is groaning.

  135. It is not all that it should be.

  136. In fact we are told.

  137. It was subjected to frustration.

  138. Not by its own choice.

  139. But by the will of the one who subjected it.

  140. That's taking us back to Genesis chapter 3.

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  141. Where we saw that God subjected creation to frustration.

  142. Because of man's rebellion against God.

  143. Because of our sin.

  144. Because of Satan's influence.

  145. The world is under God's judgment.

  146. This judgment or this curse that is upon the world.

  147. Results in all kinds of suffering.

  148. Earthquakes and hurricanes.

  149. And volcanic eruptions.

  150. Everything is now out of sync.

  151. The fabric of the universe has been undone.

  152. It's like this material physical world has been imprisoned.

  153. Locked up in a dungeon called curse.

  154. Living under the sentence of death.

  155. And awaiting execution.

  156. And from this prison come loud groans.

  157. As the curse takes effect.

  158. But why would God do this?

  159. Why would he frustrate creation in this way?

  160. Well he tells us.

  161. Look at the end of verse 20.

  162. It is subjected to frustration.

  163. In hope.

  164. That the creation itself.

  165. Will be liberated from its bondage to decay.

  166. And brought into the freedom and glory.

  167. Of the children of God.

  168. God judges.

  169. We know that.

  170. It's like the world has been imprisoned.

  171. To show the devastating effects of sin.

  172. And to show us our desperate need of a saviour.

  173. You see despite all our scientific explorations.

  174. And our understanding of the planet.

  175. And knowing about climate.

  176. Climate change.

  177. And the effects of global warming.

  178. We can't fix this world.

  179. I'm all for recycling.

  180. I support natural energy.

  181. But it's not going to stop volcanoes.

  182. Raining down on villages.

  183. Or tsunamis.

  184. Wiping out thousands of people.

  185. What the world needs.

  186. Is a saviour.

  187. Who will come and liberate.

  188. Free this world.

  189. From the sentence of death.

  190. Death.

  191. And that's what God has done.

  192. He has given to us.

  193. A saviour.

  194. In Christ.

  195. Who will come again.

  196. It's as if he will come and unlock the prison gates.

  197. He will free the world from the curse.

  198. He will release it from its sentence of death.

  199. And the world will be renewed and restored to its full glory.

  200. C.S. Lewis describes it so well in the Narnia series.

  201. We know the story.

  202. The story.

  203. The story.

  204. The account.

  205. The land is under the curse of the wicked witch.

  206. Where it's always winter.

  207. And never summer.

  208. And then the curse is undone.

  209. It's broken.

  210. With the coming of Aslan.

  211. And here's how he describes the breaking of the curse.

  212. Every moment the patches of green grew bigger.

  213. And the patches of snow grew smaller.

  214. Every moment more and more of the trees shook off their robes of snow.

  215. Then the mist turned from white to cold.

  216. Shafts of delicious sunlight struck down on the forest floor.

  217. And overhead you could see blue sky between the treetops.

  218. The ground was covered in all directions with little yellow flowers.

  219. Selandines.

  220. Crocuses growing around the foot of an old tree.

  221. Gold and purple and white.

  222. And then there was the chattering and chirping in every direction.

  223. The whole wood was ringing with birds music.

  224. You see when Christ comes again.

  225. This world will be liberated from its bondage to decay.

  226. But did you notice who gets to enjoy this liberated world?

  227. Look at the end of verse 21.

  228. It is the children of God.

  229. It is for those who are trusting and longing for the Lord Jesus Christ.

  230. It is only the children of God who will enjoy this beautiful flourishing world.

  231. A world where there are no more storms and no flooding and no drought and no more destructive weather patterns.

  232. Isaiah pictures it like this.

  233. You, that is the children of God, will go out in joy and be led forth in peace.

  234. And the mountains and the hills will burst into song before you.

  235. And all the trees of the field will clap their hands.

  236. Instead of the thorn bush will grow the juniper.

  237. And instead of the briars the myrtle will grow.

  238. This will be the Lord's renowned.

  239. An everlasting sign that will endure forever.

  240. So our future glory will be a liberated world.

  241. But it's more than that.

  242. It will also mean redeemed bodies.

  243. For a glorious new world is no good without a new body.

  244. Look at verse 23.

  245. Not only so, but we ourselves who have the first fruits of the Spirit,

  246. we groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for the adoption to sonship,

  247. the redemption of our bodies.

  248. Now if you're a Christian today,

  249. if you are trusting in Christ,

  250. we have been adopted into God's family.

  251. Have a look back at verse 15.

  252. Chapter 8, verse 15.

  253. The Spirit you received does not make you slaves so that you live in fear again.

  254. Rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship,

  255. and by Him we cry,

  256. Abba, Father.

  257. The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children.

  258. Through the work of the Spirit,

  259. the work of Christ has been applied to our life,

  260. and the effects of that working out in our life

  261. is that we have the awesome privilege of being called God's children.

  262. God is our Father.

  263. We can know Him,

  264. and we can enjoy Him.

  265. But we know too that the relationship we have with God today

  266. is not all that it should be.

  267. It's strained because of our own sin.

  268. We wander from the Father who generously gives us all we need,

  269. and we go looking for joy in other places and in other things.

  270. And then because of our guilt and shame,

  271. we hide away,

  272. we try to stay away.

  273. But here it's telling us that one day our relationship with God

  274. will be at its glorious best.

  275. Look at verse 23.

  276. It says,

  277. We wait eagerly for our adoption to sonship.

  278. Yes, we are adopted,

  279. but we are waiting for the full experience of that adoption.

  280. And we're told what that full experience is going to be like.

  281. Just have a look at verse 29.

  282. For those God foreknew,

  283. He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son.

  284. When Christ comes again,

  285. His plan,

  286. His purpose for us,

  287. is that we would be conformed to the image of His Son.

  288. We will become just like Jesus.

  289. The uninhibited relationship that Jesus enjoys with the Father

  290. will be a relationship that we will enjoy.

  291. Because when we become like Jesus,

  292. that means we will be without sin.

  293. We will be free from any evil thought.

  294. We will be pure in all of our actions.

  295. And so we will experience a relationship with God the Father

  296. in all its unrestrained joy.

  297. Imagine sitting in this liberated new world,

  298. sitting, talking, listening,

  299. with the Father,

  300. the Creator of the universe.

  301. Receiving from God all that He has to give us

  302. and enjoying Him and all His gifts

  303. in all its fullness.

  304. No more groaning questions.

  305. No more hiding with shame.

  306. Just unending pleasure and delight.

  307. Jonathan Edwards.

  308. He's an old guy.

  309. Dead 300 years.

  310. But his words still live on.

  311. He preached a sermon about heaven.

  312. And here's what he said.

  313. The enjoyment of God,

  314. follow with me,

  315. the enjoyment of God is the only happiness

  316. with which our souls can be satisfied.

  317. To go to heaven fully to enjoy God

  318. is infinitely better

  319. than the most pleasant accommodations here.

  320. Fathers and mothers,

  321. husbands, wives or children,

  322. or the company of earthly friends,

  323. are but shadows,

  324. but God is the substance.

  325. These are but scattered beams,

  326. but God is the sun.

  327. These are but streams,

  328. but God is the ocean.

  329. We will be

  330. enraptured with joys

  331. that are forever increasing,

  332. yet forever full.

  333. Yet there is something more.

  334. Glory will mean not just our adoption,

  335. but the redemption of our bodies.

  336. Look at the end of verse 23.

  337. We are waiting eagerly

  338. for the redemption of our bodies.

  339. Our bodies are amazing.

  340. They've been wonderfully designed

  341. and created by God.

  342. From the moment of conception,

  343. the growing of cells,

  344. the development of our DNA,

  345. the forming of muscles and bones,

  346. our pumping heart,

  347. our inflating lungs,

  348. watching and tasting

  349. and feeling and hearing.

  350. But yet our bodies

  351. do not work and function

  352. as they should.

  353. We suffer the physical pains

  354. of disease and decay

  355. and then eventual death.

  356. We are born with organ failure,

  357. brains that don't operate

  358. as they should,

  359. minds that overload

  360. and can't cope,

  361. eyes but can't see,

  362. ears but can't hear.

  363. We have bodies that need medicine,

  364. carers, hospitals,

  365. nursing homes, undertakers.

  366. We need graveyards.

  367. From a stubbed toe

  368. to fighting cancer,

  369. from a twisted ankle

  370. to a broken spine,

  371. some have pain,

  372. others live with pain.

  373. How we long

  374. for the redemption of our bodies.

  375. Paul writes

  376. to the church in Corinth

  377. and reminds us

  378. of what we are waiting for.

  379. Listen to this

  380. from 1 Corinthians 15.

  381. He says,

  382. The trumpet will sound,

  383. the dead will be raised imperishable,

  384. and we will be changed.

  385. For the perishable

  386. must close itself

  387. with the imperishable,

  388. and the mortal

  389. with immortality.

  390. To the church in Philippi,

  391. he writes,

  392. And we eagerly await

  393. a Saviour from there,

  394. the Lord Jesus Christ,

  395. who by the power

  396. that enables him

  397. to bring everything

  398. under his control,

  399. will transform

  400. our lowly bodies

  401. so they will be like

  402. his glorious body.

  403. One day we will experience

  404. our full redemption,

  405. running,

  406. jumping,

  407. swimming,

  408. no wheelchairs,

  409. no chemotherapy,

  410. no surgery,

  411. dancing,

  412. singing,

  413. and playing,

  414. no more goodbyes,

  415. and no more funerals.

  416. All our pains,

  417. all our disabilities,

  418. all our struggles,

  419. wiped away.

  420. Brand new,

  421. resurrected bodies

  422. that will never,

  423. ever get sick,

  424. and minds

  425. that are set free.

  426. John pictures it

  427. for us so well,

  428. and maybe this is why

  429. Helen loves these words

  430. from the end of Revelation.

  431. He,

  432. that is God,

  433. will wipe every tear

  434. from their eyes.

  435. there will be no more death,

  436. or mourning,

  437. or crying,

  438. or pain,

  439. for the old order of things

  440. has passed away.

  441. This

  442. is what we look forward to.

  443. This

  444. is the glory

  445. that awaits us.

  446. And if we are unsure

  447. that we will make it,

  448. look at verse 23

  449. closely.

  450. If you are sitting here today

  451. and thinking,

  452. I am not sure

  453. I am going to get there.

  454. Look at verse 23.

  455. Not only so,

  456. but we ourselves,

  457. who have the first fruits

  458. of the Spirit

  459. grown inwardly.

  460. We have

  461. the first fruits

  462. of the Spirit.

  463. The Spirit

  464. that God has given to us,

  465. enabling us

  466. to obey God,

  467. equipping us

  468. to fight sin,

  469. causing us

  470. to cry out to God

  471. as our Father.

  472. The Spirit

  473. that we experience

  474. now

  475. is a taster.

  476. He is the first

  477. installment

  478. of what is to come.

  479. He is a deposit

  480. guaranteeing

  481. our future inheritance.

  482. He is the mark

  483. that assures us

  484. that redemption

  485. is coming.

  486. Look back

  487. to verse 11

  488. of chapter 8.

  489. chapter 8,

  490. verse 11.

  491. And if the Spirit

  492. of Him

  493. who raised Jesus

  494. from the dead

  495. is living in you,

  496. He who raised Christ

  497. from the dead

  498. will also give life

  499. to your mortal bodies

  500. because of His Spirit

  501. who lives

  502. in you.

  503. there is assurance

  504. and there is comfort.

  505. The Spirit,

  506. the power of the Spirit

  507. that raised Christ

  508. from the dead

  509. to defeat death,

  510. that same Spirit

  511. is now in the believer,

  512. in the children of God

  513. and that same Spirit

  514. will raise us

  515. from the grave

  516. and our adoption

  517. to sonship

  518. and the redemption

  519. of our bodies

  520. will be a reality.

  521. We will live

  522. in a new world

  523. with new bodies,

  524. enjoying God

  525. in all His greatness

  526. and glory.

  527. So,

  528. our present groaning,

  529. our future glory

  530. and then

  531. our gospel hope.

  532. the promise

  533. that all suffering

  534. will end

  535. and will be replaced

  536. with glorious joy

  537. is all guaranteed

  538. because of our Saviour,

  539. the Lord Jesus Christ.

  540. Look at verse 24

  541. at the very end.

  542. Verse 24,

  543. For in this hope

  544. we were saved.

  545. In this hope

  546. we were saved.

  547. Jesus has come.

  548. Jesus has died

  549. for our sin.

  550. He has suffered

  551. the judgment we deserve.

  552. He has defeated death

  553. for us

  554. by rising again

  555. from the grave.

  556. You see,

  557. what the Saviour

  558. has done for us

  559. in the past

  560. guarantees

  561. what is yet

  562. to come

  563. in the future.

  564. His past work

  565. assures us

  566. of the future

  567. reality.

  568. In this hope

  569. we were saved

  570. and so we look forward

  571. to the fullness

  572. of our salvation

  573. where we will live

  574. in the new world

  575. with new bodies

  576. enjoying God

  577. in all His greatness

  578. and glory.

  579. Look at the rest

  580. of verse 24.

  581. But hope

  582. that is seen

  583. is no hope at all.

  584. Who hopes

  585. for what they

  586. already have?

  587. If this present life,

  588. if these present

  589. sufferings

  590. is all we have

  591. to look forward to,

  592. then how lost

  593. and empty

  594. this life is.

  595. If this is all

  596. we have,

  597. how empty

  598. and lost

  599. are we?

  600. But,

  601. verse 25,

  602. but if we hope

  603. for what we do

  604. not yet have,

  605. we wait

  606. for it

  607. patiently.

  608. This world

  609. is not our home.

  610. We have our houses,

  611. we build our careers,

  612. but this is not

  613. our home.

  614. these bodies,

  615. as wonderful

  616. as we might

  617. think they are,

  618. are not what

  619. they should be.

  620. One day,

  621. the risen Lord

  622. Jesus will come

  623. and the Father

  624. will embrace us

  625. and say,

  626. welcome home,

  627. enjoy.

  628. And the waiting

  629. will be over

  630. and we will

  631. live in the new

  632. world

  633. with our brand

  634. new bodies,

  635. enjoying God

  636. and his gifts

  637. and all his

  638. greatness

  639. and glory

  640. forever

  641. and forever.

  642. This

  643. is the joy,

  644. the promise

  645. that all suffering

  646. will end.

  647. Let's pray.

  648. Amen.

  649. Amen.

  650. Amen.

  651. Amen.

  652. Amen.

  653. Amen.

  654. Amen.

  655. Amen.

  656. Amen.

  657. Amen.

  658. Amen.

  659. Amen.

  660. Amen.

  661. Amen.

  662. Father,

  663. as we

  664. reflect,

  665. we are perhaps

  666. feeling that

  667. very groaning

  668. in our own

  669. lives

  670. right now.

  671. struggling

  672. with heartache,

  673. struggling

  674. with pain,

  675. struggling

  676. with all

  677. the breakdown

  678. we see

  679. in the world

  680. around us.

  681. us.

  682. But yet we

  683. know that groaning

  684. is not an end

  685. in itself.

  686. It is just

  687. the first

  688. cries

  689. of the glory

  690. that is to

  691. come.

  692. That glorious

  693. hope

  694. that the Lord

  695. Jesus will

  696. bring about

  697. in all its

  698. fullness

  699. when he

  700. comes again.

  701. Thank you

  702. that it is

  703. guaranteed

  704. and assured

  705. for us,

  706. those who

  707. are children

  708. of God

  709. and who

  710. are trusting

  711. in him.

  712. And that there

  713. is nothing

  714. in all

  715. this world,

  716. neither angels

  717. nor demons,

  718. neither the

  719. present nor the

  720. future,

  721. nor any powers,

  722. neither heights

  723. nor depth,

  724. nor anything

  725. else in all

  726. creation,

  727. will be able

  728. to separate

  729. us from

  730. the love

  731. of God

  732. that is

  733. in Christ

  734. Jesus our

  735. Lord

  736. and all

  737. that is to

  738. come.

  739. We praise

  740. you.

  741. We give you

  742. our thanks

  743. in Jesus'

  744. name.

  745. Amen.

  746. Well,

  747. we need to

  748. sing,

  749. don't we?

  750. I hope

  751. we have

  752. joyful hearts.

  753. Mine are

  754. the

  755. love of

  756. the

  757. love of

  758. the
