  1. I encourage you. I know you've had tea and coffee. Do you have tea and coffee again?

  2. Johnny, no, that's it. Okay. Okay. Well, can I encourage you then as you're leaving

  3. to go and browse the stand back there and pick up maybe a copy of our prayer news

  4. or pick up a magazine, some fuel for prayer, and just use it maybe during this coming week to pray.

  5. And also, too, we're producing new prayer cards for our new workers.

  6. And one of our new couples who I might mention later on,

  7. Joel and Katcha Marcus, who are working from the Cavan Church into the town of Belturbet.

  8. We kind of use them as guinea pigs for our first prayer card.

  9. We're checking the thickness of the card and all the rest of it.

  10. So we've got new cards for them.

  11. Now, you may never have heard of Belturbet here in Carrigaline. Where is that?

  12. Well, it's just slightly west of the town of Cavan.

  13. But the Cavan Church, Ivan Watson is a pastor there who Johnny knows well

  14. and going out soon to Ghana again with.

  15. And they've got a vision to see a church planted in the town of Belturbet.

  16. And so you might take Joel and Katcha upon your hearts and prayers and pray for them.

  17. Let's read together from God's Word, 1 Peter chapter 1.

    1 Peter 1 chapter mention

  18. And we're going to read from verse 1.

  19. It's on page 1217 if you have a church Bible.

  20. Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, to God's elect, exiles scattered throughout the provinces of Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia,

  21. who have been chosen according to the foreknowledge of God the Father through the sanctifying work of the Spirit

  22. to be obedient to Jesus Christ and sprinkled with His blood.

  23. Grace and peace be yours in abundance.

  24. Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  25. In His great mercy He has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead

  26. and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil, or fade.

  27. This inheritance is kept in heaven for you,

  28. who through faith are shielded by God's power

  29. until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time.

  30. In all this you greatly rejoice,

  31. though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials.

  32. These have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith of greater worth than gold,

  33. which perishes even though refined by fire,

  34. may result in praise, glory, and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.

  35. Though you have not seen Him, you love Him.

  36. And even though you do not see Him now,

  37. you believe in Him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy.

  38. For you are receiving the end result of your faith,

  39. the salvation of your souls.

  40. Let's just pause for a moment and pray and ask for God's help as we look into His Word together.

  41. Father, we thank You for this opportunity of meeting together here

  42. in the name of the Lord Jesus this morning.

  43. We thank You for the freedom we have in this land.

  44. We thank You for Your Word in our own language, Lord.

  45. We thank You for all the privileges we enjoy of fellowship with one another

  46. and being able to gather together this morning to worship You.

  47. We thank You for Your Word and we ask that by Your Spirit now He would be our teacher

  48. and that You'd lead us into all truth, that You would speak to our hearts,

  49. that You'd challenge us, that You'd encourage us,

  50. that You'd send us out from this place this morning ready to serve You afresh

  51. in the power and enabling of Your Holy Spirit.

  52. We ask it for Jesus' sake.

  53. Amen. Amen.

  54. Well, here we are in 2019, and I don't know whether it's the same on RTE.

  55. I kind of listen to RTE 1 when I'm going along in the car

  56. to try and keep in touch with all that's happening here.

  57. I watch then BBC News to see what's happening, if you like,

  58. in terms of what's going on, because you get local news in the north.

  59. And certainly nearly every day the headline is something to do with Brexit,

  60. and how Brexit is going to affect the economy

  61. and the housing crisis in Dublin and all that kind of stuff.

  62. Our friend Mr. Trump appears every so often

  63. on the wall between Mexico and here,

  64. and whether it's maybe something to do with his involvement in Russia.

  65. Our North Korean friend pops up every so often too.

  66. And in our world, we have a mixture, don't we,

  67. of, I suppose, terrorism going on in various places,

  68. turmoil in terms of Brexit and the uncertainty of that,

  69. and also technology being used in all sorts of ways for evil.

  70. And to do destructive things in our world.

  71. And people in our society, whether it's here in Ireland

  72. or in other parts of the world, are living in fear

  73. with all that uncertainty that's going on,

  74. whether it's globally or locally.

  75. And here in the Republic, certainly in recent times,

  76. laws have been passed that are increasingly anti-God,

  77. that are going to put pressure on us as believers

  78. in terms of morality and the things that are acceptable to us

  79. according to God's Word.

  80. Our tolerant society is becoming increasingly intolerant

  81. of the Christian worldview,

  82. and certainly of what is found here in the pages of Holy Scripture.

  83. The Apostle Peter writing this book around the year A.D. 61-62

  84. is writing to believers who are under pressure,

  85. writing to believers who are being persecuted,

  86. or certainly are going to face persecution for their faith.

  87. And it's seen really as something normal.

  88. If you look over in 1 Peter chapter 5 for a moment,

    1 Peter 5 chapter mention

  89. and verse 9,

  90. Peter writes these words,

  91. we'll read from verse 8 just to get the context.

  92. Be alert and of sober mind.

  93. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion,

  94. looking for someone to devour.

  95. Resist him standing firm in the faith,

  96. because you know that the family of believers throughout the world

  97. is undergoing the same kind of sufferings.

  98. So in a sense, Peter is saying,

  99. listen, this is happening to your brothers and sisters

  100. in other parts of the world,

  101. just like we know today,

  102. whether it's North Korea, China, India, other places,

  103. there's all sorts of terrible things being done

  104. to people like you and I,

  105. who simply name the name of Jesus and say,

  106. hey, I'm a person who follows him.

  107. And many of our brothers and sisters,

  108. even today,

  109. may pay the ultimate price

  110. for naming the name of Jesus.

  111. The Lord Jesus said in John chapter 15,

    John 15 chapter mention

  112. they persecuted me,

  113. they will persecute you.

  114. Also in this world,

  115. you will have trouble.

  116. And so these believers that Peter is writing to,

  117. they're facing persecution.

  118. They may be lost their homes,

  119. they may be split up from their families.

  120. Certainly they're going to face persecution

  121. in the years to come.

  122. Under Nero and Rome,

  123. in AD 64 and following,

  124. many believers were fed to the lions.

  125. Many believers had oil poured over them

  126. and there were huge as human lamps

  127. to light up Nero's garden parties.

  128. Many of them were literally led

  129. like lambs to the slaughter,

  130. dressed in maybe sheepskins or goatskins

  131. and fed to wild dogs and wild animals

  132. just for the fun and the sport of it.

  133. So the context in which Peter is writing this book into

  134. is the people who are being persecuted,

  135. people who are suffering,

  136. people who are under trials.

  137. Look at verse 6, he says,

  138. and this you greatly rejoice,

  139. though now for a little while

  140. you may have had to suffer grief

  141. in all kinds of trials.

  142. So their trials are real.

  143. Their grief is real.

  144. God doesn't promise us as believers,

  145. as the false teachers and prophets

  146. that you'll find on certain TV channels,

  147. tell you,

  148. come to Jesus

  149. and he'll take all your problems away

  150. and you'll be happy

  151. and wealthy

  152. and all will be good.

  153. The Lord Jesus never promised that.

  154. In fact,

  155. the very opposite we just read a moment ago,

  156. they persecuted me,

  157. they will persecute you also.

  158. But into this context of suffering,

  159. of grief,

  160. of trials,

  161. of persecution,

  162. Peter writes to these believers

  163. and he reminds them of certain things.

  164. He reminds them, first of all,

  165. that they're living

  166. under the mercy of God.

  167. Look at verse 3.

  168. Praise be to the God and Father

  169. of our Lord Jesus Christ

  170. in his great mercy.

  171. He has given us new birth

  172. into a living hope

  173. through the resurrection of Jesus Christ

  174. from the dead.

  175. In his great mercy.

  176. Look at chapter 2 for a moment.

  177. Turn over to chapter 2

  178. for a moment.

  179. And verse 9.

  180. Words I'm sure

  181. that we're familiar with.

  182. But you are a chosen people,

  183. a royal priesthood,

  184. a holy nation,

  185. God's special possession.

  186. Or I think as the

  187. older NIV translation said,

  188. a people belonging to God.

  189. That you may declare

  190. the praise of him

  191. who called you out of darkness

  192. into his wonderful light.

  193. Once you were not a people,

  194. but now you are the people

  195. of God.

  196. Once you had not received mercy,

  197. but now you have received mercy.

  198. And brothers and sisters this morning,

  199. whatever difficulties

  200. and trials

  201. and problems,

  202. and we all have them.

  203. We stayed here this morning

  204. and we formed ourselves

  205. into a circle.

  206. I'm sure we could go around the circle

  207. and we could all name them.

  208. Whatever struggles you have,

  209. and maybe we're not facing

  210. the persecution yet

  211. of these early believers

  212. facing,

  213. or what our brothers and sisters

  214. are facing across the world,

  215. but whatever difficulties

  216. or trials

  217. or things that are causing you

  218. grief this morning,

  219. can I remind you?

  220. Remind yourself.

  221. We this morning

  222. are living

  223. under the mercy

  224. of God.

  225. In his great mercy

  226. he has given us new birth.

  227. Theologians debate

  228. and there's,

  229. I don't know,

  230. endless books being written

  231. on the sovereignty of God

  232. versus, you know,

  233. the human decision,

  234. all this kind of stuff.

  235. But this morning,

  236. here's what we can rejoice in.

  237. Not fully ever understanding it,

  238. I certainly don't.

  239. But here's the thing,

  240. God in his grace

  241. and mercy

  242. has saved you this morning

  243. and he saved me.

  244. And as I go on longer

  245. as a believer,

  246. the thing that I suppose

  247. I ponder on more

  248. is not the hows

  249. and wherefores

  250. of all of that,

  251. but the wonder,

  252. why did God

  253. ever save me?

  254. And the more I go on

  255. as a believer

  256. and the more I understand

  257. the holiness

  258. and the so

  259. different God is

  260. to us

  261. and I see my sin

  262. as God sees it

  263. and I get a glimpse of it,

  264. how utterly rotten

  265. and sinful

  266. we really are.

  267. The wonder

  268. that God

  269. should ever

  270. set his love upon us.

  271. The old song,

  272. I think,

  273. said,

  274. oh,

  275. the wonder of it all.

  276. The wonder of it all.

  277. Just to know

  278. that God

  279. loves me.

  280. And here we are

  281. this morning,

  282. brothers and sisters,

  283. a people living

  284. under the mercy

  285. of God.

  286. Look what he says

  287. in verse 2,

  288. have been chosen

  289. according to the

  290. foreknowledge

  291. of God the Father

  292. through the sanctifying

  293. work of the Spirit

  294. to be obedient

  295. to Jesus Christ

  296. and sprinkled

  297. with his blood.

  298. The work of God's

  299. grace and mercy,

  300. the triune God.

  301. Somebody once said this,

  302. the Father sought us,

  303. the Spirit brought us,

  304. and the Son bought us

  305. by his precious blood.

  306. Determined before

  307. this world was ever

  308. created,

  309. in the mind of God,

  310. Father,

  311. Son,

  312. and Holy Spirit,

  313. God setting his love

  314. and mercy

  315. upon you and I,

  316. not for any good

  317. that we have ever done

  318. or could ever do

  319. as we've reflected

  320. in our songs

  321. this morning,

  322. but because he chose us

  323. in love

  324. and in grace

  325. and in mercy,

  326. were a people

  327. this morning

  328. who belong

  329. to God

  330. and Peter says,

  331. praise thee

  332. to the God

  333. and Father

  334. of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  335. That's what causes

  336. this morning

  337. as we have done already

  338. to glorify him,

  339. to praise him,

  340. to thank him.

  341. Father in heaven,

  342. thank you this morning

  343. that despite all

  344. the things that are

  345. going on in my life

  346. and the difficulties

  347. and the pressures

  348. and the problems,

  349. you've saved me

  350. by your grace

  351. and in your mercy.

  352. Living under the mercy

  353. of God,

  354. he also reminds him

  355. that there are people

  356. who have a living hope

  357. in a risen Savior.

  358. Look again at verse 3.

  359. Praise be to the God

  360. and Father

  361. of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  362. In his great mercy,

  363. he has given us

  364. new birth

  365. into a living hope

  366. through the resurrection

  367. of Jesus Christ

  368. from the dead.

  369. Today is Resurrection Sunday.

  370. Every Sunday

  371. is Resurrection Sunday.

  372. The Lord Jesus conquered death

  373. again as we reflected

  374. in our songs this morning.

  375. He conquered the grave.

  376. He's alive forevermore

  377. and he's defeated death

  378. in all its three-dimensional ugliness.

  379. Physical death,

  380. spiritual death,

  381. eternal death.

  382. He conquered it all

  383. when he died upon that cross

  384. and rose again.

  385. And he lives today

  386. in the power

  387. of an endless life.

  388. Death has been defeated.

  389. And brothers and sisters,

  390. you and I are going to live forever.

  391. Not in this cursed,

  392. fallen world,

  393. but in that new heaven

  394. and new earth

  395. where there will be

  396. no more suffering,

  397. no more sickness,

  398. no more tears,

  399. no more pain,

  400. no more death,

  401. no more separation,

  402. and God himself,

  403. John writes in Revelation,

  404. will wipe every tear

  405. from our eyes.

  406. We have a living hope

  407. because we have

  408. a risen Savior

  409. who's alive

  410. and ever lives

  411. this morning

  412. to make intercession for us.

  413. Isn't that amazing?

  414. Isn't that incredible?

  415. The Lord Jesus

  416. this morning

  417. interceding

  418. on our behalf

  419. before the Father

  420. in heaven

  421. today.

  422. We're living

  423. under the mercy of God.

  424. We're a people living

  425. with hope

  426. and a risen Savior.

  427. If we look again

  428. at verse 4,

  429. an intimate inheritance,

  430. he says,

  431. that can never perish,

  432. spoil or fade.

  433. This inheritance

  434. is kept in heaven

  435. for you

  436. who through faith

  437. are shielded

  438. by God's power

  439. until the coming

  440. of the salvation

  441. that's ready to be revealed

  442. in the last time.

  443. Not only are we

  444. people this morning

  445. living under the mercy

  446. of God

  447. with a living hope

  448. and a risen Savior,

  449. but we have

  450. a lasting inheritance.

  451. I heard Michael O'Leary

  452. on the radio

  453. the day after

  454. Tony Ryan died.

  455. Now you've all

  456. have probably flown

  457. on a plane

  458. with Tony Ryan's name on it.

  459. Well,

  460. at the beginning

  461. of his second name anyway.

  462. If you've flown,

  463. we used to call them

  464. Ruin Air

  465. when I was in

  466. the airline business,

  467. but we called them

  468. Ryan Air, right?

  469. Tony Ryan.

  470. And this is what

  471. Michael O'Leary

  472. said about Tony Ryan

  473. the day after he died.

  474. He was talking about

  475. how Tony was a great man

  476. and always thinking

  477. about new projects,

  478. always planning

  479. for the future,

  480. always working out

  481. new strategies,

  482. new markets,

  483. where he was going

  484. to go next,

  485. etc.

  486. And the thought

  487. that went through

  488. my mind was,

  489. I wonder how much

  490. planning Tony Ryan

  491. has done

  492. for where he is now.

  493. He's gone to meet

  494. his maker.

  495. And I don't know

  496. where Tony Ryan stood,

  497. but what I can say

  498. on the authority

  499. of God's word

  500. this morning,

  501. if Tony Ryan

  502. died without a saviour,

  503. then all the money

  504. he had,

  505. all the cars he drove,

  506. his big mansion

  507. in County Wicklow,

  508. would have no use to him

  509. if he was without Christ

  510. and without hope.

  511. Somebody asked a question

  512. after a wealthy person died,

  513. how much did he leave?

  514. And the answer was

  515. he left everything.

  516. He left it all behind.

  517. Brothers and sisters,

  518. this morning,

  519. we may not have

  520. that much here

  521. on this earth,

  522. but we have

  523. an inheritance

  524. in heaven.

  525. And ultimately,

  526. that inheritance

  527. is not in things,

  528. but it's in a person.

  529. We have

  530. the Lord Jesus.

  531. He is our joy.

  532. He is our salvation.

  533. And one day,

  534. we are going to see him

  535. face to face.

  536. That salvation

  537. will ultimately

  538. be revealed.

  539. Paul says,

  540. the coming of the salvation

  541. is ready to be revealed

  542. in the last time

  543. when Jesus

  544. comes

  545. again.

  546. and we are shielded

  547. by God's power.

  548. Come with me for a moment

  549. to John chapter 10.

    John 10 chapter mention

  550. Again,

  551. familiar words,

  552. familiar passage,

  553. but good to be reminded

  554. this morning

  555. that we are safe,

  556. not in ourselves,

  557. not on what we do,

  558. not in our church attendance,

  559. not in our involvement,

  560. but we are safe

  561. because of Jesus.

  562. We are safe in him.

  563. Verse 27 of John chapter 10.

    John 10 chapter mention

  564. My sheep listen to my voice.

  565. I know them

  566. and they follow me.

  567. I give them

  568. eternal life.

  569. It can never be bought.

  570. It can never be merited.

  571. It's a gift.

  572. And they shall never perish.

  573. No one

  574. will snatch them

  575. out of my hand.

  576. My Father

  577. who has given them to me

  578. is greater than all.

  579. No one can snatch them

  580. out of my Father's hand.

  581. I and the Father

  582. are one.

  583. And Peter reminds

  584. these believers

  585. that they have,

  586. they're living their lives

  587. under the mercy of God,

  588. that they have this living hope

  589. in their risen Savior,

  590. that they have a lasting inheritance

  591. in the Lord Jesus Christ,

  592. that they're being kept

  593. by the power of God.

  594. God is keeping them

  595. through their trials,

  596. through their difficulties,

  597. through their problems.

  598. They're being kept.

  599. They're being shielded

  600. by God's power

  601. until Jesus comes again

  602. or calls them home.

  603. And then he says

  604. in verse 6,

  605. and this is where I want

  606. to challenge us all

  607. this morning.

  608. He says,

  609. in this you greatly rejoice,

  610. though now for a little while

  611. you may have had to suffer grief

  612. in all kinds of trials.

  613. These have come

  614. that the proven genuineness

  615. of your faith

  616. of greater worth than gold

  617. which perishes

  618. even though refined by fire

  619. may result in praise,

  620. glory, and honor

  621. when Jesus Christ is revealed.

  622. Though you have not seen him,

  623. you love him.

  624. And even though you do not see him now,

  625. you believe in him

  626. and are filled with an inexpressible

  627. and glorious joy

  628. if you are receiving

  629. the end result of your faith,

  630. the salvation of your soul.

  631. In this you greatly rejoice.

  632. You're filled with an inexpressible

  633. and glorious joy.

  634. So here's the challenge

  635. to us all this morning,

  636. brothers and sisters.

  637. Whatever our difficulties,

  638. whatever our problems,

  639. whatever our struggles,

  640. whatever grief we're going through,

  641. whatever we're facing

  642. in this world,

  643. despite it all,

  644. and God doesn't take

  645. those problems away.

  646. But when we reflect

  647. on all that we have

  648. in the Lord Jesus,

  649. that we're a people

  650. who have been forgiven by God,

  651. that all our sins

  652. have been washed away,

  653. that as far as the East

  654. is from the West,

  655. so far as he removed

  656. our transgressions from us,

  657. that he's written our name

  658. in the Lamb's Book of Life,

  659. that he's given us

  660. eternal life,

  661. that we're going to be with him

  662. in glory forever,

  663. one day when he comes again

  664. or calls us home,

  665. that we have an inheritance,

  666. that we belong to him,

  667. that can never be taken away.

  668. We're in the Father,

  669. we're sealed by the Son,

  670. we're sealed by the Spirit,

  671. the Son of the Father

  672. have us in their hands,

  673. we can never be snatched

  674. out of their hands.

  675. Brothers and sisters,

  676. this morning,

  677. that should be filling us

  678. with an inexpressible

  679. and glorious joy

  680. despite our circumstances.

  681. Now, it's not a false

  682. outward smile,

  683. it's not a pretense

  684. that we have no problems,

  685. it's saying that

  686. in the midst

  687. of our difficulties,

  688. in the midst of our trials,

  689. in the midst of our suffering,

  690. as Peter writes

  691. to these believers,

  692. that they can still have

  693. a deep inward joy,

  694. that goes out into a world

  695. of darkness,

  696. and hopelessness,

  697. and pain,

  698. and suffering,

  699. and says,

  700. we can declare his praises

  701. even in the midst

  702. of our difficulties.

  703. Like he says,

  704. and we read earlier

  705. in chapter 2,

  706. declaring his praises,

  707. who's called us

  708. out of darkness

  709. into his wonderful light.

  710. We can go out

  711. on mission

  712. and tell people

  713. the wonder

  714. of our God

  715. because of who he is

  716. and what he's done

  717. in our lives.

  718. And even those

  719. trials

  720. and persecutions

  721. and problems

  722. that come our way,

  723. God has a way

  724. as only God can

  725. of using them

  726. to hone

  727. and shape

  728. and make our faith

  729. even more precious

  730. than it is now

  731. because only he

  732. has the power

  733. to do that.

  734. He can take trials

  735. and difficulties

  736. and use them

  737. for our good.

  738. Look at Romans chapter 5

    Romans 5 chapter mention

  739. for a moment

  740. as we come to a close.

  741. We're probably all very familiar

  742. with verse 1.

  743. Therefore,

  744. since we have been justified

  745. through faith,

  746. we have peace with God

  747. through our Lord Jesus Christ,

  748. through whom we have gained

  749. access by faith

  750. into this grace

  751. in which we now stand.

  752. And we boast

  753. in the hope

  754. of the glory of God.

  755. But look what he says

  756. in verse 3.

  757. Not only so,

  758. but we also glory

  759. in our sufferings

  760. because we know

  761. that suffering

  762. produces perseverance,

  763. perseverance character

  764. and character hope.

  765. And hope does not

  766. put us to shame

  767. because God's love

  768. has been poured out

  769. into our hearts

  770. through the Holy Spirit

  771. who has been given

  772. to us.

  773. None of us want suffering.

  774. None of us,

  775. I'm sure tonight

  776. are going to pray,

  777. Lord,

  778. send persecution

  779. to Ireland.

  780. We just long

  781. for a bit more,

  782. right?

  783. We're not going

  784. to pray that,

  785. are we?

  786. But in the midst

  787. of our trials,

  788. in the midst

  789. of our difficulties,

  790. in the midst

  791. of our sufferings,

  792. God can even use

  793. those things

  794. to deepen

  795. and sharpen

  796. our faith

  797. and make it

  798. even more genuine.

  799. He says in verse 7,

  800. these have come

  801. that the proven

  802. genuineness of your faith

  803. of greater worth

  804. than gold

  805. which perishes

  806. even though refined

  807. by fire

  808. may ultimately result

  809. in praise,

  810. glory and honour

  811. when Jesus Christ

  812. is revealed.

  813. Brothers and sisters,

  814. this morning,

  815. if we're living

  816. under the mercy of God,

  817. if we're living

  818. in that great hope

  819. of knowing

  820. that we have

  821. a risen saviour,

  822. of knowing

  823. that we have

  824. a lasting inheritance,

  825. of knowing

  826. that we're being kept

  827. by the power

  828. of God,

  829. then this morning

  830. we can rejoice

  831. in Him

  832. and we should be

  833. people of joy

  834. and we should be able

  835. to go out

  836. into a world

  837. full of pain

  838. and difficulty

  839. and speak to them

  840. of our saviour

  841. who's given us

  842. this joy,

  843. point them

  844. to Him.

  845. And the glorious thing is

  846. in the midst of our pain,

  847. in the midst of our trials,

  848. in the midst of our difficulties,

  849. get to the end

  850. of 1 Peter,

  851. you come to chapter 5

  852. and verse 7

  853. where he says,

  854. cast all your cares

  855. upon Him

  856. because He cares

  857. for you.

  858. And I ask you this morning,

  859. do you have

  860. this joy?

  861. Are you rejoicing

  862. in the fact

  863. that you're part

  864. of the people

  865. who belong

  866. to God?

  867. Are you going

  868. to go out

  869. tomorrow

  870. not in your own strength,

  871. not

  872. conjuring up

  873. something within you

  874. but in God,

  875. with God's strength

  876. and by His grace

  877. and the enabling

  878. of His Spirit

  879. to go and declare

  880. the praise of Him

  881. who called you

  882. out of darkness

  883. into His marvelous light?

  884. You see,

  885. mission

  886. is not going

  887. and telling other people

  888. how wonderful we are.

  889. It's going

  890. and telling people

  891. who Jesus is

  892. and what He has done.

  893. And our circumstances

  894. can either make us

  895. bitter

  896. or better.

  897. Remember the servant girl

  898. Naaman's time?

  899. We don't even know

  900. her name.

  901. She was captured,

  902. taken from a homeland.

  903. She was effectively

  904. a slave.

  905. She had every reason

  906. to be bitter

  907. and angry

  908. with God,

  909. with her circumstances,

  910. what was going on

  911. in her life.

  912. But rather than allowing

  913. that to make her bitter,

  914. it made her better.

  915. And even

  916. to the leader

  917. of her enemies,

  918. she was given

  919. the grace

  920. to point Him

  921. to the one true God

  922. who could ultimately

  923. see Him healed

  924. and restored.

  925. We have

  926. mysteries in Spain.

  927. The Reed family

  928. who live up in Barcelona.

  929. It's in the news a lot.

  930. Andrew Reed's involved

  931. in training pastors

  932. in Spain.

  933. The Federation of Churches

  934. we are linked to

  935. in Spain

  936. called the Federation

  937. of Independent

  938. Evangelical Churches.

  939. Only about a third

  940. of those churches

  941. have their own pastor.

  942. But two thirds don't.

  943. A lot of those pastors

  944. have not been trained.

  945. They've just,

  946. I suppose,

  947. they may even be

  948. just the pastor

  949. because nobody else

  950. wants to be the pastor.

  951. And Andrew Reed's involved

  952. in training men

  953. in pastor ministry,

  954. training men

  955. and preaching

  956. across the land of Spain

  957. in partnership

  958. with Langham,

  959. partnership

  960. and other agencies

  961. as well.

  962. So pray for them

  963. as they seek to equip

  964. men and women

  965. in Spain for preaching.

  966. Right down the very

  967. south of Spain

  968. we have a couple

  969. called Andrew Rosali Elliot.

  970. Rosali is from Brazil

  971. and they work

  972. in a place called

  973. Algatherus

  974. which is a big port

  975. in the south of Spain

  976. and a lot of their

  977. work is involved

  978. in reaching people

  979. from a Muslim background

  980. and they have a

  981. children's club

  982. in different ways,

  983. homework clubs

  984. and different things

  985. of reaching

  986. into that area.

  987. and they're seeking

  988. to reach into

  989. a new town

  990. in Spain

  991. called Medina Sidonia

  992. so it's a bit

  993. like Caratul

  994. an area in Spain

  995. a town in Spain

  996. but 45 minutes away

  997. from where

  998. the church is

  999. in Agatherus

  1000. and where that town

  1001. is in Medina Sidonia

1002. there are four other towns

  1003. you're standing

  1004. on the hilltop

  1005. in Medina Sidonia

1006. there are four other towns

  1007. you can look down

  1008. and see

  1009. where there's no

  1010. Bible believing church

  1011. as well

  1012. so from that place

  1013. they'd love to see

  1014. more churches

  1015. being planted.

  1016. Sometimes God

  1017. brings people

  1018. into mission

  1019. in different ways

  1020. we had a couple

  1021. and they're young

  1022. their name is young

1023. they don't look old enough

  1024. to be legally married

  1025. in my opinion

  1026. they're so young looking

1027. but they came to me

  1028. about a year ago

  1029. and said

  1030. Mervyn we've been

  1031. really burdened

  1032. for Spain

  1033. we've been there

  1034. on teams

  1035. served God there

1036. we don't want to go

  1037. as missionaries

  1038. we don't want to

  1039. cause Baptist missions

  1040. or anything

  1041. we want to go

  1042. we want to go

  1043. as tent makers

1044. and so in the goodness

  1045. of God

  1046. they moved to Spain

  1047. he got a job

  1048. teaching French

  1049. in Gibraltar

  1050. so only God

  1051. can do that

  1052. have somebody

  1053. go to Spain

  1054. but actually

  1055. teaching French

  1056. he teaches a bit

  1057. of Spanish as well

  1058. and his wife

  1059. is a physiotherapist

  1060. she got a job

  1061. in Gibraltar as well

  1062. so God's provided

  1063. for them

  1064. they set up home

  1065. in Agathiris

  1066. their hope is

  1067. they're being involved

  1068. in the church

  1069. but they also want

  1070. to reach out

  1071. into a new community

  1072. where there's no church

  1073. and so be part

  1074. possibly of a new

  1075. church plan

1076. in that area as well

  1077. we also have

  1078. a mystery couple

  1079. at the other end

  1080. of the age spectrum

  1081. or a non-identified couple

  1082. as we're calling them

  1083. who have taken

  1084. early retirement

1085. but because of their involvement

1086. in other parts of the world

  1087. in the past

1088. they've asked us not to

1089. put their names out there

  1090. in the public arena

1091. so you won't find their names

  1092. in the magazine

  1093. or prayer news

  1094. or anything

1095. but there are a couple

  1096. who came and said

  1097. listen

1098. we don't want to just sit

  1099. and vegetate

  1100. in our local church

  1101. there's too many people

  1102. in it already anyway

  1103. we want to go

  1104. and serve God

  1105. somewhere else

  1106. and so

  1107. they sold up

  1108. moved to Spain

1109. they don't have any Spanish

1110. so you can pray for them

  1111. as they go through

  1112. language learning

  1113. but they just begun

1114. to get to know people

  1115. meet people for coffee

  1116. and so forth

  1117. and here's the way

  1118. God works

  1119. in his grace

  1120. and his sovereignty

  1121. the only place

1122. they could find to rent

  1123. in Medina Sidonia

1124. there was no other place available

  1125. all the estate agents

  1126. said we don't have

1127. plenty of stuff to sell

  1128. nothing to rent

1129. one place available to rent

  1130. and they moved into

  1131. an upstairs flat

  1132. they got to know

  1133. their landlady

  1134. came down

  1135. to speak to her

  1136. one day

  1137. and discovered

  1138. that their landlady

  1139. had a bible

  1140. on her shelf

  1141. and she actually

  1142. reads it as well

  1143. and something like

  1144. 20 odd years ago

1145. a man from Puerto Rico

  1146. gave that lady

1147. he'd lived in that flat

  1148. in the past

1149. and he'd given that lady

  1150. a bible

  1151. and so

  1152. that couple

  1153. had begun to meet

  1154. with the landlady

  1155. and her husband

  1156. because she's interested

  1157. in knowing more

  1158. about the bible

  1159. now again

  1160. only God

  1161. can take people

  1162. from Ireland

  1163. to an inland town

  1164. in Spain

1165. lead them to a place

  1166. where maybe

  1167. the only person

  1168. in the town

  1169. maybe not

  1170. but the only person

  1171. certainly

  1172. who had a house

  1173. available to rent

  1174. and the lady

1175. had already been in touch

  1176. with a believer

  1177. would you pray

  1178. that the light

  1179. of the gospel

1180. as they seek to shine

  1181. the light

  1182. of the gospel

1183. as they seek to bring

  1184. that living hope

  1185. of a risen saviour

  1186. to the people

  1187. in Medina Sidonia

  1188. that God would work

  1189. through them

  1190. and in them

  1191. for the furthest

  1192. of his kingdom

  1193. and the glory

  1194. of his name

  1195. thank you John

  1196. level

  1197. .
