  1. and give thanks to God for his grace in your life.

  2. We're going to be looking at our title this morning,

  3. God Has Designed My Suffering.

  4. And you'll see on the inside of your new sheet,

  5. there's two books that are available this morning.

  6. I've mentioned them before.

  7. And the first one is Invest Your Suffering,

  8. Unexpected Intimacy with a Loving God.

  9. So this red one here by Paul Millard.

  10. So he shares throughout the book his experience of his wife's long-term illness

  11. to which there's no known cure,

  12. and his openness as he wrestles with scripture

  13. and yet trusts in God, him and his family.

  14. So that's at the back there.

  15. You mightn't have heard of him, but I'm sure you will have heard of Joni.

  16. Erickson Tadda, her book, A Place of Healing,

  17. Wrestling with the Mysteries of Suffering, Pain and God's Sovereignty.

  18. So it tells of her story through life.

  19. She's wheelchair bound,

  20. and yet God has used her amazingly through her suffering

  21. to reach many people with the good news of Christ across the world.

  22. And in many nations, people have been helped through her story.

  23. So these are two books that I've read.

  24. They're specifically written out of experience

  25. and the context of walking through suffering.

  26. So they're both very helpful for that reason.

  27. And they're 10 euro each,

  28. so they're available.

  29. There's a few copies of each this morning.

  30. Let's pray together.

  31. Father, thank you for this story of grace

  32. and your goodness to Mary in the midst of her life

  33. and going through the storms and struggles that she has.

  34. Thank you, Father, that you have been her father,

  35. a rock, one in whom she can trust.

  36. We pray now, Father, as we look together at your word,

  37. as we listen to what you have to say to us,

  38. that for each one of us, you would be that rock

  39. in whom we can trust.

  40. So help us now, Father, we pray.

  41. Amen.

  42. Well, you heard Mary's story,

  43. and I wonder, how do you respond

  44. when you go through times of suffering?

  45. If it's an unexpected illness,

  46. a relationship breakdown,

  47. a disappointment in life,

  48. what do you do when you suffer?

  49. Well, I think there's one or two ways

  50. in which we often respond.

  51. First, when suffering comes,

  52. we can run from God.

  53. You see, for many,

  54. personal suffering has no rhyme or reason.

  55. God isn't in control,

  56. and he can't do anything to make it stop.

  57. The things we go through are just random events,

  58. tragic circumstances that invade our happy lives.

  59. It's just the way that life is.

  60. So suffering can cause us to run from God.

  61. It can all be flight.

  62. Or sometimes we can fight with God.

  63. We get angry and we get bitter

  64. and we blame God for the things that happen.

  65. And we shout at him,

  66. you can't let this happen to me.

  67. If you really cared for me,

  68. if you really loved me,

  69. you would make it all go away.

  70. And so suffering can cause us

  71. to fight with God.

  72. But there is another way,

  73. the way of faith.

  74. We can trust God.

  75. Have a look with me, please,

  76. at Psalm 139, verse 13.

    Psalms 139:13

  77. Psalm 139, verse 13.

    Psalms 139:13

  78. Let's pick it up in verse 13.

  79. For you created my inmost being.

  80. You knit me together in my mother's womb.

  81. I praise you because I am fearfully

  82. and wonderfully made.

  83. Your works are wonderful.

  84. I know that full well.

  85. My frame was not hidden from you

  86. when I was made in the secret place,

  87. when I was woven together

  88. in the depths of the earth.

  89. Your eyes saw my unformed body.

  90. All the days ordained for me

  91. were written in your book

  92. before one of them came to be.

  93. How precious to me are your thoughts, God.

  94. How vast is the sum of them.

  95. Were I to count them,

  96. they would outnumber the grains of sand.

  97. When I am awake,

  98. I am still with you.

  99. Did you see verse 16?

  100. All the days ordained for me

  101. were written in your book

  102. before one of them came to be.

  103. Our life is in God's hands.

  104. God ordains the day we are born

  105. and God ordains the day that we die.

  106. He is the one who gives us

  107. our very first breath

  108. and He is the one who takes

  109. our last breath.

  110. And if God controls the beginning

  111. and the end,

  112. then He controls every circumstance

  113. and every event in between.

  114. God knows all things.

  115. God rules all things.

  116. God is sovereign over all things.

  117. Nothing happens in your life

  118. without God's permission.

  119. In fact, the message of the Bible is this.

  120. God has designed my suffering,

  121. so trust Him.

  122. God has designed my suffering,

  123. so trust Him.

  124. You see, some people think

  125. that the Christian life

  126. is a blissful journey

  127. from earth to heaven.

  128. God's plan for your life

  129. is to be healthy and wealthy.

  130. No trials and no troubles.

  131. But if you should suffer in some way,

  132. you have somehow moved outside

  133. of God's plan for your life.

  134. No.

  135. Everything that happens in your life

  136. is ordained by God.

  137. God has designed the suffering in our life

  138. so that I can trust Him.

  139. Now, to help us see this,

  140. we're going to look at the lives

  141. of four characters

  142. in the Scriptures,

  143. four people who suffered,

  144. and how we see God's design

  145. over it.

  146. So the first one we're going to look at

  147. is Joseph

  148. in the place of God.

  149. Have a look back at Genesis chapter 45.

    Genesis 45 chapter mention

  150. Genesis chapter 45.

    Genesis 45 chapter mention

  151. Joseph, if you know anything about him,

  152. was the youngest of 12 brothers.

  153. The problem was,

  154. his father Jacob treated him

  155. as the favorite.

  156. And while his brothers were out working,

  157. providing,

  158. slogging away,

  159. Joseph stayed at home.

  160. In fact, his father treasured him so much,

  161. he made him a very expensive coat,

  162. the famous coat of many colors.

  163. If you like,

  164. it was a one-off designer item.

  165. And one day,

  166. while his brothers were out in the fields,

  167. Jacob sent Joseph out

  168. to see how they were getting on.

  169. And as they saw him approach,

  170. they were filled with rage and jealousy,

  171. and they plotted amongst themselves

  172. how they were going to kill him.

  173. But instead,

  174. they sold Joseph

  175. as a slave

  176. to some passing travelers.

  177. They covered his coat in blood,

  178. and told his father

  179. he was killed by a wild animal.

  180. Joseph suffered.

  181. He became a slave.

  182. Not only that,

  183. later on in his life,

  184. he ended up being sent to prison

  185. for a crime that he never committed.

  186. And after 17 years

  187. of one trial and struggle after another,

  188. Joseph found himself

  189. in better times.

  190. He became second in command

  191. to Pharaoh,

  192. ruler of Egypt.

  193. Now,

  194. at the same time,

  195. his brothers

  196. were facing a severe famine.

  197. So,

  198. they traveled to Egypt

  199. in search of food.

  200. And who did they meet?

  201. Well,

  202. Joseph.

  203. But look carefully

  204. at what Joseph says

  205. to his brothers

  206. when they come

  207. face to face.

  208. Chapter 45,

  209. verse 4.

  210. Then Joseph said

  211. to his brothers,

  212. come close to me.

  213. When they had done so,

  214. he said,

  215. I am your brother Joseph,

  216. the one who sold you

  217. into Egypt.

  218. The one you sold

  219. into Egypt.

  220. And now,

  221. do not be distressed

  222. and do not be angry

  223. with yourselves

  224. for selling me here

  225. because it was to save lives

  226. that God sent me

  227. ahead of you.

  228. For two years now,

  229. there has been a famine

  230. in the land

  231. and for the next five years,

  232. there will be no plowing

  233. and reaping.

  234. But God sent me

  235. ahead of you

  236. to preserve for you

  237. a remnant on earth

  238. and to save your lives

  239. by a great deliverance.

  240. Yes,

  241. the brothers

  242. sold him as a slave.

  243. They plotted it out.

  244. They planned it.

  245. They got money

  246. for the sale.

  247. But Joseph knew

  248. that God

  249. was ultimately

  250. in control.

  251. Look at verse 7.

  252. But God

  253. sent me

  254. ahead of you.

  255. You see,

  256. suffering is not

  257. a random

  258. event.

  259. It is not a mistake

  260. or a plan

  261. that has gone wrong.

  262. God not only

  263. allows these things

  264. to happen,

  265. he purposes

  266. them to happen.

  267. Flick on

  268. a couple of chapters

  269. to chapter 50,

  270. verse 19.

  271. Chapter 50,

  272. verse 19.

  273. Again,

  274. Joseph is speaking

  275. to his brothers.

  276. verse 19.

  277. But Joseph

  278. said to them,

  279. don't be afraid.

  280. Am I

  281. in the place

  282. of God?

  283. You intended

  284. to harm me,

  285. but God

  286. intended it

  287. for good

  288. to accomplish

  289. what is now

  290. being done,

  291. the saving

  292. of many lives.

  293. In my suffering,

  294. says Joseph,

  295. I am in the place

  296. of God.

  297. And in our

  298. suffering,

  299. we are in the

  300. place of God.

  301. God has designed

  302. our suffering

  303. so we can

  304. trust him.

  305. Second,

  306. let's look at

  307. Job.

  308. Job chapter 1

    Job 1 chapter mention

  309. comes before,

  310. just before

  311. Psalms.

  312. Job chapter 1.

    Job 1 chapter mention

  313. Job chapter 1.

    Job 1 chapter mention

  314. Job chapter 1.

    Job 1 chapter mention

  315. We've met

  316. Job before

  317. in our studies

  318. on this subject.

  319. We've seen

  320. his sufferings.

  321. He lost

  322. his livelihood.

  323. All his

  324. animals and

  325. servants

  326. were taken

  327. away.

  328. His ten

  329. children and

  330. their husbands

  331. and wives

  332. were killed

  333. in a tornado.

  334. And then

  335. Job suffered

  336. a terrible

  337. skin disease,

  338. a flesh-eating

  339. disease that

  340. left him

  341. in absolute

  342. agony.

  343. But look

  344. at how

  345. Job sees

  346. all these

  347. trials and

  348. struggles.

  349. Verse 20.

  350. At this,

  351. Job got up

  352. and tore

  353. his robe

  354. and shaved

  355. his head.

  356. Then he

  357. fell to the

  358. ground in

  359. worship and

  360. said,

  361. Naked I

  362. came from

  363. my mother's

  364. womb,

  365. and naked

  366. I shall

  367. depart.

  368. The Lord

  369. gave,

  370. and the

  371. Lord is

  372. taken away.

  373. May the

  374. name of

  375. the Lord

  376. be praised.

  377. In all

  378. this, Job

  379. did not

  380. sin by

  381. charging God

  382. with

  383. wrongdoing.

  384. Everything

  385. that happened

  386. in his

  387. life was

  388. not some

  389. terrible twist

  390. of fate.

  391. This is not

  392. the result of

  393. a God who

  394. is absent

  395. and powerless.

  396. Look at

  397. verse 21.

  398. The Lord

  399. gave,

  400. and the

  401. Lord has

  402. taken away.

  403. And even

  404. when Job's

  405. wife begins

  406. to question

  407. him over

  408. his ideas

  409. and his

  410. thinking,

  411. look what

  412. she says

  413. in verse 9,

  414. chapter 2,

  415. verse 9.

  416. His wife

  417. said to

  418. him,

  419. Are you

  420. still

  421. maintaining

  422. your

  423. integrity?

  424. Curse God

  425. and die.

  426. He replied,

  427. You are

  428. talking like

  429. a foolish

  430. woman.

  431. Shall we

  432. accept good

  433. from God

  434. and not

  435. trouble?

  436. in all

  437. this,

  438. Job did

  439. not sin

  440. in what

  441. he said.

  442. He

  443. recognizes

  444. that God

  445. brings

  446. good

  447. and that

  448. God

  449. brings

  450. troubles.

  451. John

  452. Piper,

  453. reflecting on

  454. these verses,

  455. put it

  456. like this.

  457. Follow

  458. along as I

  459. read.

  460. it will

  461. not do

  462. to say

  463. that God

  464. only uses

  465. our

  466. suffering

  467. but does

  468. not

  469. design

  470. it.

  471. What God

  472. permits,

  473. he permits

  474. for a

  475. reason.

  476. And that

  477. reason is

  478. his design.

  479. If God

  480. foresees

  481. suffering,

  482. he can

  483. stop it

  484. or not.

  485. If he

  486. does not,

  487. then he

  488. has purposes.

  489. purposes.

  490. And since

  491. he is

  492. infinitely

  493. wise,

  494. it is

  495. right to

  496. call this

  497. purpose

  498. a design.

  499. You see,

  500. Job saw

  501. his suffering

  502. as purposed,

  503. planned and

  504. designed by

  505. God.

  506. Of course,

  507. that doesn't

  508. mean that

  509. Job didn't

  510. struggle or

  511. that he

  512. didn't have

  513. questions.

  514. the whole

  515. book of

  516. Job is

  517. full of

  518. questions and

  519. his shoutings

  520. at God.

  521. However,

  522. knowing that

  523. God ordains

  524. all things

  525. leads him

  526. to trust

  527. God.

  528. Look at

  529. the conclusion

  530. of the

  531. book,

  532. chapter 42.

  533. The very

  534. end,

  535. chapter 42,

  536. verse 1.

  537. Look at

  538. how Job

  539. responds to

  540. all that

  541. has happened

  542. in his

  543. life.

  544. Then Job

  545. replied to

  546. the Lord,

  547. I know

  548. that you

  549. can do

  550. all things.

  551. No

  552. purpose of

  553. yours can

  554. be thwarted.

  555. Nothing

  556. that happens

  557. in our

  558. life is

  559. outside of

  560. God's

  561. plan for

  562. your life.

  563. Nothing

  564. can disrupt

  565. what God

  566. has designed,

  567. so we

  568. trust him.

  569. So

  570. Joseph was

  571. in the

  572. place of

  573. God.

  574. Job

  575. could say

  576. no purpose

  577. of yours

  578. can be

  579. thwarted.

  580. Jeremiah,

  581. all J's,

  582. so it's

  583. easy to

  584. follow and

  585. remember.

  586. He was

  587. one who

  588. trusted the

  589. Lord.

  590. Have a

  591. look at

  592. Jeremiah

    Jeremiah 17 chapter mention

  593. chapter 17.

  594. Jeremiah

  595. was a

  596. prophet

  597. called by

  598. God to

  599. speak a

  600. message to

  601. the people.

  602. It wasn't

  603. an easy

  604. message,

  605. it was a

  606. message of

  607. judgment.

  608. His message

  609. was simply

  610. this because

  611. the people

  612. had persisted

  613. in their

  614. sin and

  615. rebelled

  616. against God.

  617. God was

  618. going to

  619. take them

  620. by way of

  621. discipline

  622. into exile.

  623. That was

  624. his message.

  625. It's not a

  626. nice message

  627. to tell,

  628. it certainly

  629. wasn't a nice

  630. message for the

  631. people to

  632. hear,

  633. and Jeremiah

  634. suffered for

  635. it.

  636. No need to

  637. look up the

  638. references,

  639. I'll just

  640. refer to them.

  641. In chapter

  642. 12,

  643. verse 6,

  644. we read

  645. about his

  646. own family

  647. who betrayed

  648. him and

  649. turned against

  650. him,

  651. left on

  652. his own.

  653. In chapter

  654. 20,

  655. verse 2,

  656. we read

  657. that the

  658. priest in

  659. charge of

  660. the temple

  661. had beaten

  662. him up and

  663. then put him

  664. into stocks

  665. for everybody

  666. to see at

  667. the entrance

  668. of the

  669. gates.

  670. In chapter

  671. 26,

  672. verse 16,

  673. he endured

  674. continuous

  675. death threats

  676. of the

  677. people planned

  678. to try and

  679. kill him.

  680. Chapter 37,

  681. verse 18,

  682. he was thrown

  683. into prison

  684. and punished

  685. by the

  686. king.

  687. And following

  688. that event,

  689. no sooner

  690. was he

  691. released than

  692. he was thrown

  693. into a

  694. disused

  695. well.

  696. And this

  697. is what it

  698. says,

  699. it had no

  700. water in it,

  701. only mud,

  702. water in it,

  703. and Jeremiah

  704. sank down

  705. into the

  706. mud.

  707. I think

  708. it's fair

  709. to say

  710. that Jeremiah

  711. suffered

  712. terribly.

  713. His whole

  714. adult life

  715. was marked

  716. with one

  717. trial after

  718. another.

  719. He had

  720. done nothing

  721. wrong.

  722. He was only

  723. doing what

  724. God had

  725. called him

  726. to do.

  727. Yet through

  728. it all,

  729. Jeremiah

  730. didn't fight

  731. God and

  732. he didn't

  733. flee from

  734. God.

  735. He trusted

  736. that God

  737. was over

  738. all things.

  739. You see,

  740. in times

  741. of suffering,

  742. he looked

  743. to God

  744. in faith.

  745. Look at

  746. what God

  747. says to

  748. Jeremiah

  749. in chapter

  750. 17,

  751. verse 5.

  752. So he's

  753. already gone

  754. through suffering,

  755. he will go

  756. through more

  757. suffering,

  758. and in the

  759. midst of it

  760. all,

  761. this is what

  762. God says.

  763. this is

  764. what the

  765. Lord says.

  766. Cursed

  767. is the

  768. one who

  769. trusts in

  770. man,

  771. who draws

  772. strength from

  773. mere flesh

  774. and whose

  775. heart turns

  776. away from

  777. the Lord.

  778. That person

  779. will be like

  780. a bush in

  781. the wastelands.

  782. They will

  783. not see

  784. prosperity when

  785. it comes.

  786. They will

  787. dwell in

  788. the parched

  789. places of

  790. the desert,

  791. in a salt

  792. land where

  793. no one

  794. lives.

  795. But,

  796. blessed is

  797. the one

  798. who trusts

  799. in the

  800. Lord,

  801. whose

  802. confidence

  803. is in

  804. him.

  805. They will

  806. be like a

  807. tree planted

  808. by water

  809. that sends

  810. out its

  811. roots by

  812. the stream.

  813. It does

  814. not fear

  815. when heat

  816. comes.

  817. So no

  818. matter what

  819. the storm

  820. or the

  821. struggle,

  822. he does

  823. not fear.

  824. It leaves

  825. are always

  826. green.

  827. It has

  828. no worries

  829. in a year

  830. of drought.

  831. And never

  832. fails to

  833. bear fruit.

  834. Trust me

  835. with your

  836. life,

  837. God says.

  838. Whatever you

  839. are going

  840. through,

  841. don't run

  842. to other

  843. things and

  844. to other

  845. people.

  846. Trust me.

  847. And look at

  848. Jeremiah's

  849. response,

  850. verse 14.

  851. Heal me,

  852. Lord,

  853. and I

  854. shall be

  855. healed.

  856. Save me,

  857. and I

  858. shall be

  859. saved.

  860. For you

  861. are the

  862. one I

  863. praise.

  864. Jeremiah

  865. would go

  866. on to

  867. suffer much

  868. more after

  869. he said

  870. that,

  871. but it

  872. was a

  873. mark of

  874. his life.

  875. We

  876. mightn't

  877. understand

  878. everything.

  879. We

  880. mightn't

  881. make sense

  882. of what's

  883. going on

  884. in our

  885. life.

  886. Our

  887. suffering

  888. may

  889. continue

  890. through

  891. all of

  892. our

  893. prayers,

  894. yet we

  895. trust

  896. that God

  897. is in

  898. control

  899. of all

  900. that

  901. happens.

  902. God

  903. has

  904. designed

  905. our

  906. suffering

  907. so we

  908. can

  909. trust

  910. him.

  911. So

  912. Joseph

  913. understood

  914. that he

  915. was in

  916. the place

  917. of God.

  918. Job

  919. came to

  920. see that

  921. no plan

  922. of God's

  923. could be

  924. thwarted,

  925. and Jeremiah

  926. knew what

  927. it was

  928. to trust

  929. the Lord

  930. in the

  931. midst of

  932. his

  933. suffering.

  934. This

  935. has

  936. changed

  937. slightly

  938. the title.

  939. Well,

  940. Jesus

  941. is still

  942. right,

  943. but the

  944. next bit

  945. is

  946. into

  947. your

  948. hands

  949. I

  950. commit

  951. my

  952. spirit.

  953. Turn

  954. to

  955. Acts

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  956. chapter

  957. 2

  958. with

  959. me.

  960. Acts

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  961. chapter

  962. 2.

  963. Jesus

  964. is the

  965. supreme

  966. example

  967. for us

  968. that we

  969. can trust

  970. God

  971. in the

  972. midst

  973. of our

  974. suffering.

  975. Jesus

  976. was one

  977. who did

  978. suffer.

  979. Isaiah

  980. the prophet

  981. reminds us

  982. he was

  983. despised

  984. and rejected

  985. by mankind,

  986. a man of

  987. suffering and

  988. familiar with

  989. pain.

  990. Jesus

  991. knew what

  992. it was

  993. to be a

  994. refugee.

  995. He

  996. experienced

  997. hunger,

  998. sleepless

  999. nights,

  1000. he faced

  1001. opposition

  1002. and

  1003. rejection,

  1004. and

  1005. primarily

  1006. and most

  1007. of all

  1008. he suffered

  1009. the judgment

  1010. of God

  1011. on the

  1012. cross for

  1013. us.

  1014. He

  1015. suffered

  1016. the reality

  1017. of hell

  1018. for you

  1019. and for

  1020. me.

  1021. But all

  1022. this

  1023. suffering

  1024. that took

  1025. place

  1026. was all

  1027. designed

  1028. by God.

  1029. Peter

  1030. tells us

  1031. that Jesus

  1032. was chosen

  1033. before the

  1034. creation of

  1035. the world,

  1036. before this

  1037. universe

  1038. existed.

  1039. Jesus

  1040. was chosen.

  1041. The plan

  1042. was in

  1043. place.

  1044. The plan

  1045. was in

  1046. place.

  1047. Peter is

  1048. preaching,

  1049. preaching about

  1050. Jesus.

  1051. It's after the

  1052. death and

  1053. resurrection of

  1054. Jesus.

  1055. And look what he

  1056. says, verse 22.

  1057. fellow

  1058. Israelites,

  1059. listen to

  1060. this.

  1061. Jesus of

  1062. Nazareth was

  1063. a man

  1064. accredited by

  1065. God to

  1066. you by

  1067. miracles,

  1068. wonders,

  1069. and signs,

  1070. which God

  1071. did among

  1072. you through

  1073. him as

  1074. you yourselves

  1075. know.

  1076. This man

  1077. was handed

  1078. over to

  1079. you by

  1080. God's

  1081. deliberate

  1082. plan and

  1083. foreknowledge,

  1084. and you

  1085. with the

  1086. help of

  1087. wicked men

  1088. put him

  1089. to death

  1090. by nailing

  1091. him to

  1092. the cross.

  1093. But God

  1094. raised him

  1095. from the

  1096. dead,

  1097. freeing him

  1098. from the

  1099. agony of

  1100. death because

  1101. it was

  1102. impossible for

  1103. death to

  1104. keep its

  1105. hold on

  1106. him.

  1107. So who

  1108. is responsible

  1109. for the

  1110. death of

  1111. Jesus?

  1112. Well, we

  1113. could say

  1114. the people

  1115. and the

  1116. Roman

  1117. soldiers,

  1118. and we

  1119. would be

  1120. right,

  1121. wouldn't

  1122. we?

  1123. But, look

  1124. what it

  1125. says in

  1126. verse 23.

  1127. This man,

  1128. Jesus,

  1129. was handed

  1130. over to

  1131. you by

  1132. God's

  1133. deliberate

  1134. plan and

  1135. foreknowledge.

  1136. Before the

  1137. creation of

  1138. the world,

  1139. God planned

  1140. and ordained

  1141. and designed

  1142. the death

  1143. of Jesus.

  1144. Have a look

  1145. at Acts

    Acts 4 chapter mention

  1146. chapter 4.

  1147. Peter has

  1148. just been

  1149. released from

  1150. prison.

  1151. He's been

  1152. put in

  1153. prison for

  1154. teaching about

  1155. Jesus,

  1156. and the

  1157. disciples are

  1158. now facing

  1159. great

  1160. opposition.

  1161. Peter's

  1162. just come

  1163. out of

  1164. prison and

  1165. they begin

  1166. to pray

  1167. in verse

  1168. 24,

  1169. Acts 4,

    Acts 4:24

  1170. verse 24.

  1171. When they

  1172. heard this,

  1173. that is,

  1174. when Peter's,

  1175. when they'd

  1176. heard of

  1177. Peter's

  1178. release from

  1179. prison,

  1180. they raised

  1181. their voices

  1182. together in

  1183. prayer to

  1184. God,

  1185. sovereign

  1186. Lord,

  1187. they said,

  1188. you made

  1189. the heavens

  1190. and the

  1191. earth and

  1192. the sea and

  1193. everything in

  1194. them.

  1195. In other

  1196. words,

  1197. you're in

  1198. control of

  1199. all things.

  1200. And you

  1201. spoke by

  1202. the Holy

  1203. Spirit through

  1204. the mouth

  1205. of your

  1206. servant,

  1207. our father

  1208. David.

  1209. He spoke

  1210. about the

  1211. opposition that

  1212. there would

  1213. be towards

  1214. Jesus.

  1215. Jesus.

  1216. And he

  1217. quotes,

  1218. why do

  1219. the nations

  1220. rage and

  1221. the people's

  1222. plot in

  1223. vain?

  1224. The kings

  1225. of the

  1226. earth rise

  1227. up and

  1228. the rulers

  1229. band together

  1230. against the

  1231. Lord and

  1232. against his

  1233. anointed one.

  1234. And it

  1235. did come to

  1236. pass,

  1237. verse 27,

  1238. indeed Herod

  1239. and Pontius

  1240. Pilate met

  1241. together with

  1242. the Gentiles

  1243. and the

  1244. people of

  1245. Israel in

  1246. the city to

  1247. conspire against

  1248. your holy

  1249. servant Jesus

  1250. whom you

  1251. anointed.

  1252. They did

  1253. what your

  1254. power and

  1255. will had

  1256. decided

  1257. beforehand

  1258. should

  1259. happen.

  1260. So again,

  1261. who is

  1262. responsible for

  1263. the suffering

  1264. of Jesus?

  1265. Well, we

  1266. could say,

  1267. verse 27,

  1268. that it's

  1269. Herod and

  1270. his little

  1271. chat with

  1272. Pontius

  1273. Pilate,

  1274. the religious

  1275. authorities,

  1276. they put

  1277. Jesus to

  1278. death.

  1279. And we

  1280. would be

  1281. right.

  1282. But look

  1283. at verse

  1284. 28.

  1285. They only

  1286. did what

  1287. your power

  1288. and will

  1289. had decided

  1290. beforehand

  1291. should

  1292. happen.

  1293. God

  1294. designed

  1295. the

  1296. suffering

  1297. of

  1298. Jesus.

  1299. The

  1300. lash

  1301. on his

  1302. back,

  1303. the

  1304. thorns

  1305. on his

  1306. head,

  1307. the spit

  1308. on his

  1309. cheek,

  1310. the bruises

  1311. on his

  1312. face,

  1313. the nails

  1314. in his

  1315. hands,

  1316. the spear

  1317. in his

  1318. side,

  1319. the scorn

  1320. of rulers,

  1321. the betrayal

  1322. of his

  1323. friends,

  1324. the desertion

  1325. by his

  1326. disciples.

  1327. These were

  1328. all the

  1329. results of

  1330. sin,

  1331. and all

  1332. designed

  1333. by God

  1334. to destroy

  1335. the power

  1336. of sin.

  1337. You see,

  1338. in Jesus,

  1339. we see

  1340. the true

  1341. Joseph,

  1342. the better

  1343. Joseph,

  1344. who was

  1345. sent by

  1346. God,

  1347. planned

  1348. by God,

  1349. designed

  1350. by God,

  1351. to come

  1352. and save

  1353. many people

  1354. through his

  1355. sufferings.

  1356. Jesus is

  1357. our better

  1358. Job,

  1359. isn't he?

  1360. The one

  1361. who is

  1362. ultimately

  1363. innocent,

  1364. and suffered

  1365. the ultimate

  1366. suffering for

  1367. us,

  1368. judgment

  1369. and hell,

  1370. so that

  1371. we don't

  1372. have to.

  1373. Jesus is

  1374. the true

  1375. and better

  1376. Jeremiah,

  1377. the one

  1378. who trusted

  1379. the Lord

  1380. with his

  1381. life,

  1382. when nothing

  1383. seemed to

  1384. make sense.

  1385. He committed

  1386. his life

  1387. to God.

  1388. You see,

  1389. knowing his

  1390. suffering,

  1391. knowing that

  1392. his way

  1393. to the

  1394. cross

  1395. was all

  1396. designed

  1397. by God,

  1398. Jesus

  1399. prayed.

  1400. Do you

  1401. remember what

  1402. he prayed

  1403. in the

  1404. garden?

  1405. Father,

  1406. if you

  1407. are willing,

  1408. take this

  1409. cup,

  1410. take this

  1411. cup of

  1412. suffering

  1413. from me,

  1414. yet not

  1415. my will,

  1416. but yours

  1417. be done.

  1418. Jesus,

  1419. as he

  1420. faces into

  1421. his suffering,

  1422. entrusts his

  1423. life to

  1424. the Father.

  1425. And when

  1426. he is on

  1427. the cross,

  1428. having gone

  1429. through all

  1430. the suffering

  1431. that he

  1432. endured,

  1433. Jesus called

  1434. out in a

  1435. loud voice,

  1436. Father,

  1437. into your

  1438. hands,

  1439. I commit

  1440. my spirit.

  1441. And when

  1442. he said

  1443. this,

  1444. he breathed

  1445. his last.

  1446. Because God

  1447. has planned

  1448. and designed

  1449. his

  1450. sufferings,

  1451. Jesus

  1452. could

  1453. entrust

  1454. his life

  1455. to the

  1456. Father.

  1457. You see,

  1458. as Jesus

  1459. prays,

  1460. he's

  1461. praying for

  1462. us.

  1463. Jesus

  1464. is standing

  1465. in for

  1466. us,

  1467. entrusting

  1468. our lives

  1469. into the

  1470. Father's

  1471. sovereign

  1472. hands.

  1473. He

  1474. prays the

  1475. prayer for

  1476. our eternal

  1477. salvation,

  1478. so that

  1479. we can

  1480. trust him

  1481. with our

  1482. life.

  1483. He

  1484. entrusts us

  1485. into the

  1486. Father's

  1487. care,

  1488. so that

  1489. when

  1490. suffering

  1491. comes into

  1492. our

  1493. life,

  1494. we too

  1495. can pray,

  1496. Father,

  1497. not my

  1498. will,

  1499. but your

  1500. will be

  1501. done.

  1502. Father,

  1503. into your

  1504. hands,

  1505. I

  1506. commit

  1507. my

  1508. spirit.

  1509. If God

  1510. willed and

  1511. decided all

  1512. that should

  1513. happen to

  1514. his son

  1515. would be

  1516. for our

  1517. good and

  1518. for our

  1519. ultimate

  1520. salvation,

  1521. how much

  1522. more then

  1523. can we

  1524. trust him

  1525. with the

  1526. sufferings in

  1527. our life?

  1528. In the

  1529. coming weeks,

  1530. we're going

  1531. to be

  1532. seeing how

  1533. God uses

  1534. our

  1535. suffering

  1536. for our

  1537. good and

  1538. the many

  1539. benefits and

  1540. blessings that

  1541. come through

  1542. that.

  1543. But as we

  1544. close, I'd

  1545. like us to

  1546. listen to the

  1547. testimony of

  1548. Joni Erickson

  1549. Tada.

  1550. It comes from

  1551. the book that I

  1552. mentioned earlier.

  1553. Joni suffered a

  1554. terrible injury as

  1555. a teenager that

  1556. left her

  1557. paralyzed from

  1558. the neck

  1559. down.

  1560. Joni trusts

  1561. God who

  1562. has designed

  1563. her suffering.

  1564. Listen to

  1565. what she

  1566. says.

  1567. These are

  1568. her words.

  1569. So many

  1570. have tried to

  1571. get me to

  1572. say that my

  1573. accident of

  1574. 43 years

  1575. ago was

  1576. never part of

  1577. God's plan,

  1578. that my

  1579. paralysis was

  1580. never his

  1581. intention,

  1582. that quadriplegia

  1583. was never

  1584. necessary,

  1585. that chronic

  1586. pain didn't

  1587. have to be,

  1588. that suffering

  1589. was never part

  1590. of his plan,

  1591. that the many

  1592. tears and

  1593. groans and

  1594. struggles and

  1595. sleepless nights

  1596. were needless and

  1597. a waste of my

  1598. energy and my

  1599. life.

  1600. life.

  1601. But I know

  1602. differently.

  1603. It was all

  1604. planned long

  1605. ago and God

  1606. brought it about

  1607. in his perfect

  1608. faithfulness.

  1609. And because he

  1610. allowed it and

  1611. permitted it,

  1612. because he has

  1613. walked with me

  1614. through every

  1615. moment of it,

  1616. his plan has

  1617. been marvellous

  1618. for Joni

  1619. Erickson

  1620. Tadda.

  1621. God has

  1622. designed my

  1623. suffering.

  1624. God has

  1625. designed your

  1626. suffering.

  1627. And we can

  1628. trust him.

  1629. Let's pray.

  1630. Amen.

  1631. Father, we

  1632. look in

  1633. your

  1634. heart.

  1635. Amen.

  1636. Amen.

  1637. Amen.

  1638. Amen.

  1639. Amen.

  1640. Amen.

  1641. Amen.
