  1. Before Seth comes up to us to bring God's Word, we'll just spend a few moments in prayer

  2. for a few things.

  3. Obviously, Johnny is away in America, and after a few unexpected layovers, a layover

  4. he had, he's there now.

  5. So we'll just pray for him as he goes over and just encourages people in Redeemer Bible

  6. Church.

  7. They came over to us last year.

  8. We had a lovely time with them.

  9. It was a privilege to meet them, and now Johnny's going over, and we pray that he would be an

  10. encouragement to them.

  11. We'll just pray, too, for the Christianity Explored, an opportunity just to share Jesus

  12. with others, and for the upcoming Munster Bible College.

  13. So let's just bow our heads and just spend a few moments in prayer.

  14. Father, we do thank you that you have brought Johnny and Kirsty and the family into Carragalline.

  15. Thank you for the way that they minister to us.

  16. I thank you for the great teaching that you've given Johnny, and that week by week he is faithful

  17. to your Word as he brings it to us.

  18. Thank you for the way that we've been able to grow by hearing your Word week by week.

  19. Thank you for his humility, his service, his willingness to spend time in your Word to be

  20. able to speak each week to us.

  21. Thank you for the opportunity that he has to go over to Redeemer Bible Church.

  22. May he be an encouragement to them as he meets different people, different believers, people

  23. who also have a desire to hear your Word, to bring praise to you, who also will be on

  24. bended knee bringing their praise to God and their Saviour.

  25. I pray, indeed, that it would be an encouragement to him that you'd keep him safe, keep him from

  26. tiredness for the next few days.

  27. I thank you for what he's able to do.

  28. I thank you for the Christianity Explored course.

  29. I thank you for the way that has been put together, for how faithful it is to your Word.

  30. We thank you that we can learn from the Gospel of Mark, and even though we might be familiar

  31. with so much of it, that we still see new things by your Spirit showing us different things

  32. and how wonderful that is.

  33. May, indeed, we be renewed and refreshed as we opened up the Gospel once again, never believing

  34. believing that we know it all, but always having an open heart and willingness to learn

  35. more and more.

  36. We thank you, Lord, for what we read in it, what we have read about you and the authority

  37. that you have over sickness and nature and death and sin.

  38. How amazing that is.

  39. We do thank you for us as members here in Carragalline.

  40. Thank you that we have a desire just to be joined together, to commit ourselves, to be

  41. able to spend time hearing about the different ministries, about different decisions.

  42. I pray, indeed, that our hearts will be always open to you, that we would not be just led

  43. by our own nature, but led by you, that we would be led by your Spirit as we make decisions.

  44. We do thank you for the opportunity for a further Bible study in NBC.

  45. Thank you for the last four years.

  46. Thank you for all that people can learn, for the opportunities people have.

  47. And even coming up in March, when Michael comes over, I pray that there will be many who

  48. have a desire to get into the Old Testament, to learn more.

  49. We just think of how the Old Testament can be such an example to us, that we can learn

  50. so much for it, Lord, and yet so often we don't delve into it, but indeed that our hearts

  51. will be changed, that we'd have a desire to do that, and that indeed that it would be

  52. a blessed week, a week where people will be excited at what you have done and what is

  53. recorded for us in your Word.

  54. Lord, we do thank you that Seth has come along this morning to be able to bring your Word.

  55. I thank you for the work that himself and Jessica are involved in Carrick Tool.

  56. I thank you for their desire to plant churches, to draw alongside people, to share Jesus with

  57. people.

  58. Thank you that their desire is to see believers grow.

  59. May you bless that work, that it may be of your work, Lord, not the work of man, but the

  60. work of God, so that it will prosper and grow, and that in years to come we will praise

  61. you for a church there in Carrick Tool.

  62. I thank you for his desire for your Word.

  63. Thank you that his desire is to be a workman approved unto you.

  64. Thank you for the work and the time he puts in, and as he comes up in his short while,

  65. indeed that he would speak your Word, that we would be encouraged, that we would be challenged,

  66. even rebuked and disciplined where necessary.

  67. May our hearts be open to your Word.

  68. May we not desire to just stand still in our faith, but to continually grow.

  69. May we be teachable believers, those who want to know more of you.

  70. So we thank you for Seth.

  71. Thank you for your Word.

  72. In Jesus' name.

  73. Amen.

  74. So Seth, thank you very much for coming up.

  75. Well, thank you very much.

  76. It's wonderful to be here, as always.

  77. We're big fans of this church.

  78. And if you want to turn to 1 Kings chapter 18, we'll be in 18 and 19.

    1 Kings 18 chapter mention

  79. And if you're in one of the church Bibles, that's on page 359.

  80. That's better.

  81. I'm just not quite as tall as this.

  82. I wonder, have you ever wondered why God doesn't intervene more often with, like, really powerful demonstrations,

  83. like big miracles, just really show up in big, clear, undeniable ways more often than he does?

  84. I mean, he's God.

  85. He can do that any time.

  86. And yet, if you look at history, even if you look at the history of the Bible, with so many miracles recorded,

  87. still there are long, long periods of time without them.

  88. It's more rare than we'd like.

  89. God seems to do most of his work, actually, in other ways.

  90. And sometimes that leaves us scratching our heads, wondering why he doesn't seem to be answering our prayers

  91. for the things that seem really good and really right and really needed.

  92. When the Bible says that God's ways are higher than ours, it's not kidding.

  93. But what I'd like us to look at this morning is actually a time when God did do incredible miracles

  94. and did answer big prayers, did make a big demonstration of his power.

  95. And yet, alongside that, the unexpected way that he chose to actually complete his work.

  96. So, we're going to start with 1 Kings 18, but we'll get there in just a minute,

  97. because I want to tell you quickly what James tells us about Elijah.

  98. In James 5, you don't have to turn there, but he says this,

  99. Elijah was a human being, even as we are.

  100. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain.

  101. And it did not rain on the land for three and a half years.

  102. So, the point that James is making is that Elijah was a normal person.

  103. Just like us, he prayed a big prayer and he was answered by a big God.

  104. We can pray to the same God, and that's amazing.

  105. We have the same access.

  106. It wasn't about Elijah being a particularly, like a different class of person.

  107. He has access to the same God.

  108. He prayed earnestly and God answered.

  109. We have the same God.

  110. But here's the question.

  111. Elijah prays earnestly for something big.

  112. The big thing that he prays for is for it not to rain.

  113. Now, I can understand that living in Ireland.

  114. Sometimes we might want it not to rain.

  115. But even here, if it doesn't rain for three and a half years,

  116. we're going to be in trouble.

  117. I mean, if he's going to ask for something big,

  118. if he's going to pray earnestly for something,

  119. why would he pray earnestly for something that will cause a famine?

  120. Why not pray earnestly for a really miraculous big bumper crop?

  121. I think we have to understand the setting that Elijah is in.

  122. At this time, the nation of Israel is caught up in the worship of a false God called Baal.

  123. And Baal was supposed to be the God who sent rain.

  124. He was the God of rain.

  125. He was also the God of lightning and thunder.

  126. So Elijah prays that God would hold back the rain

  127. because that would show very clearly that Baal was not the real power.

  128. Israel was worshipping Baal, but Baal was not in control of the rain.

  129. God was.

  130. Elijah knew that as long as the rain came,

  131. the people were going to credit that to Baal.

  132. So what they actually needed more than rain

  133. was to know God,

  134. even if the only way to get there was through a famine.

  135. And God answers,

  136. for three and a half years it does not rain.

  137. That's actually quite a miracle.

  138. That's a big thing.

  139. But God does even more.

  140. When he's finally ready to send the rain,

  141. he only does it after one more very big,

  142. impressively clear demonstration of who the real God is.

  143. So we'll read through this.

  144. It's because I can't describe it as well as it's described here.

  145. 1 Kings chapter 18, starting in verse 22.

    1 Kings 18 chapter mention

  146. Elijah said to them,

  147. I am the only one of the Lord's prophets left,

  148. but Baal has 450 prophets.

  149. Get two bulls for us.

  150. Let Baal's prophets choose one for themselves

  151. and let them cut it in pieces and put it on the wood

  152. and not set it on fire.

  153. I'll prepare another bull and put it on the wood

  154. and not set it on fire.

  155. Then you call in the name of your God,

  156. I will call in the name of the Lord,

  157. the God who answers by fire.

  158. He is God.

  159. Now, remember,

  160. Baal was supposed to be the God of lightning.

  161. This is his department.

  162. If he can do anything,

  163. he should be able to do this.

  164. And all the people said,

  165. what you say is good.

  166. So Elijah said to the prophets of Baal,

  167. choose one of the bulls,

  168. prepare it first,

  169. since there are so many of you.

  170. Call in the name of your God,

  171. but do not light the fire.

  172. So they took the bull given to them

  173. and they prepared it.

  174. Then they called on the name of Baal

  175. from morning till noon.

  176. Baal, answer us,

  177. they shouted.

  178. But there was no response.

  179. No one answered.

  180. So they danced around the altar they had made.

  181. At noon,

  182. Elijah began to taunt them.

  183. Shout louder,

  184. he said.

  185. Surely he's a God.

  186. Perhaps he's deep in thought

  187. or busy or traveling.

  188. Maybe he's sleeping

  189. and he must be awakened.

  190. So they shouted louder

  191. and they slashed themselves

  192. with swords and spears

  193. as was their custom

  194. until their blood flowed.

  195. Midday passed

  196. and they continued

  197. their frantic prophesying

  198. until the time

  199. of the evening sacrifice.

  200. But there was no response.

  201. No one answered.

  202. No one paid attention.

  203. Then Elijah said to all the people,

  204. come here to me.

  205. I think maybe Elijah was from Cork.

  206. He said,

  207. come here to me.

  208. They came to him

  209. and he repaired the altar of the Lord

  210. which had been torn down.

  211. Elijah took twelve stones,

  212. one for each of the tribes

  213. descended from Jacob

  214. to whom the word of the Lord had come

  215. saying,

  216. your name shall be Israel.

  217. With the stones

  218. he built an altar

  219. in the name of the Lord

  220. and he dug a trench around it

  221. large enough to hold

  222. two sears of seed.

  223. He arranged the wood,

  224. cut the bull in pieces,

  225. laid it on the wood.

  226. Then he said,

  227. fill four large jars with water

  228. and pour it on the offering

  229. and on the wood.

  230. Do it again.

  231. And they did it again.

  232. Do it a third time.

  233. That's twelve jars of water

  234. that are going on this.

  235. The water ran down

  236. around the altar

  237. and even filled the trench.

  238. At the time of sacrifice,

  239. the prophet Elijah

  240. stepped forward and prayed,

  241. Lord, the God of Abraham,

  242. Isaac and Israel,

  243. let it be known today

  244. that you are God in Israel,

  245. that I am your servant

  246. and have done all these things

  247. at your command.

  248. Answer me, Lord.

  249. Answer me.

  250. So these people

  251. will know that you,

  252. Lord, are God

  253. and that you are turning

  254. their hearts back again.

  255. Then the fire of the Lord fell

  256. and burned up the sacrifice,

  257. the wood, the stones,

  258. and the soil

  259. and also licked up

  260. the water in the trench.

  261. And when the people saw this,

  262. they fell prostrate

  263. and cried,

  264. The Lord, he is God.

  265. The Lord, he is God.

  266. And Elijah commanded them,

  267. Seize the prophets of Baal.

  268. Don't let anyone get away.

  269. They seized them

  270. and Elijah had them

  271. brought down to the Kishon Valley

  272. and slaughtered there.

  273. And Elijah said to Ahab,

  274. Go, eat and drink,

  275. for there is the sound

  276. of heavy rain.

  277. The rain is coming.

  278. God had been withholding it

  279. in answer to Elijah's prayer.

  280. Now it is coming.

  281. And now that they know the source,

  282. now that they have seen

  283. this clear demonstration,

  284. God sends the rain as well.

  285. Now, this is a big miracle.

  286. This is a very clear sign

  287. of who God is,

  288. who is the real God.

  289. Baal had not been able

  290. to send rain.

  291. Now he is not able

  292. to send fire.

  293. Even though these are supposed

  294. to be the things

  295. that he is in control of.

  296. So at this point,

  297. Elijah believes,

  298. understandably,

  299. that he is one.

  300. He believed that the worship

  301. of Baal and Israel

  302. is done.

  303. It's over.

  304. And after a victory like that,

  305. you wouldn't blame him.

  306. I mean, how can anyone

  307. deny God now?

  308. How can anyone continue

  309. to worship a God like Baal

  310. after he's been shown,

  311. proven to be so powerless?

  312. But there's one sentence

  313. that turns Elijah's world

  314. upside down.

  315. And it's in chapter 19.

  316. He turned the page.

  317. The first verse

  318. of chapter 19.

  319. Now Ahab told Jezebel

  320. everything Elijah had done

  321. and how he had killed

  322. all the prophets

  323. with the sword.

  324. So Jezebel sent a messenger

  325. to Elijah to say,

  326. May the gods deal with me,

  327. be it ever so severely,

  328. if by this time tomorrow

  329. I do not make your life

  330. like one of them.

  331. So even with all the evidence

  332. that you could ever ask for,

  333. literally falling down

  334. out of the sky

  335. in front of them,

  336. Jezebel and Ahab

  337. will not submit to God.

  338. And even though the people

  339. had just seen

  340. these incredible things,

  341. had seen this incredible display

  342. of God's power,

  343. it's actually not long

  344. before we see them

  345. worshipping Baal again.

  346. It's unbelievable.

  347. It seems incredible.

  348. But it's true.

  349. And to be honest,

  350. we're not so different today.

  351. Evidence alone,

  352. by itself,

  353. no matter how overwhelming it is,

  354. is actually not enough

  355. to change sinful hearts

  356. so that they turn to God.

  357. Even really big,

  358. even impressively clear

  359. demonstrations like this

  360. are not enough

  361. in themselves

  362. to change

  363. our rebellious hearts.

  364. Instead of dealing

  365. with the reality

  366. of what had just happened,

  367. Jezebel and Ahab,

  368. they try to erase

  369. the evidence

  370. by killing Elijah.

  371. And Elijah

  372. starts to wonder,

  373. what's the point of this?

  374. What have I accomplished here?

  375. Look at 19, verse 3.

  376. Elijah was afraid

  377. and he ran for his life.

  378. When he came to Beersheba

  379. in Judah,

  380. he left his servant there

  381. while he himself

  382. went a day's journey

  383. into the wilderness.

  384. He came to a broom bush,

  385. sat down under it

  386. and prayed that he might die.

  387. I have had enough, Lord,

  388. he said.

  389. Take my life.

  390. I'm no better

  391. than my ancestors.

  392. Then he lay down

  393. under the bush

  394. and fell asleep.

  395. Things have really

  396. turned around,

  397. haven't they?

  398. He's basically saying,

  399. this isn't working.

  400. I've done all I can do.

  401. How could you even

  402. possibly make it

  403. any clearer

  404. than we've made it?

  405. And yet it wasn't enough.

  406. And he says,

  407. I give up.

  408. I might as well be dead.

  409. What more can I possibly do?

  410. I'm done.

  411. And I think we can understand

  412. how he feels.

  413. God had answered his prayers

  414. and it should have worked.

  415. But now he's being hunted.

  416. And the whole thing

  417. looks completely different

  418. than what he thought,

  419. how he thought

  420. it should have gone.

  421. Elijah feels like he's done.

  422. But God is not done.

  423. God is still working.

  424. Even though Elijah

  425. can't see it.

  426. Elijah is so discouraged,

  427. he just wants to die.

  428. But God is not actually

  429. finished with Elijah

  430. either.

  431. He's still going to use him.

  432. But I think it's important,

  433. before we get to where

  434. God calls Elijah on,

  435. it's important to note

  436. what he does

  437. before he does that.

  438. Before any new instructions come,

  439. look at verse 5.

  440. All at once an angel

  441. touched him and said,

  442. Get up and eat.

  443. He looked around

  444. and there by his head

  445. was some baked bread

  446. over hot coals

  447. and a jar of water.

  448. He ate and drank

  449. and then lay down again.

  450. The angel of the Lord

  451. came back a second time

  452. and touched him and said,

  453. Get up and eat,

  454. for the journey

  455. is too much for you.

  456. So he got up

  457. and he ate

  458. and he drank.

  459. Strengthened by that food,

  460. he traveled 40 days

  461. and 40 nights

  462. until he reached Horeb,

  463. the mountain of God.

  464. Then there he went

  465. into a cave

  466. and spent the night.

  467. God doesn't scold Elijah

  468. for being sad

  469. and discouraged

  470. and depressed

  471. and wanting to die.

  472. Instead,

  473. he sends an angel

  474. to give him food

  475. and water.

  476. And then he waits

  477. and he gives Elijah

  478. time to sleep.

  479. He gives him food

  480. a second time.

  481. And verse 8 tells us

  482. Elijah was strengthened

  483. by that food.

  484. Elijah was wrecked.

  485. I mean,

  486. he's just been through

  487. this huge emotional

  488. rollercoaster,

  489. this huge victory,

  490. followed by

  491. this complete turnaround

  492. that left him

  493. literally running

  494. for his life.

  495. But God doesn't just

  496. drive him forward.

  497. Elijah is tired

  498. in every way.

  499. But God gives him

  500. time and space

  501. for food and rest.

  502. And sometimes

  503. when we feel awful,

  504. actually one of the

  505. most spiritual things

  506. we can do

  507. is eat

  508. and sleep.

  509. Psalm 103

  510. celebrates the fact

  511. that God

  512. knows how we are formed.

  513. He remembers

  514. that we are dust.

  515. even though God

  516. himself is infinite

  517. and strong,

  518. he doesn't forget

  519. that we are not.

  520. He doesn't roll

  521. his eyes

  522. and turn up

  523. his nose

  524. at our weakness.

  525. He reaches down

  526. to give us

  527. his strength

  528. to dry our tears.

  529. He could have

  530. chastised Elijah

  531. for being depressed,

  532. but he doesn't.

  533. He gives him food

  534. and he gives him rest.

  535. And he draws him in

  536. to show him

  537. how he's been working

  538. in ways that Elijah

  539. had never seen.

  540. And he shows him

  541. that God still has

  542. a role for Elijah

  543. in his plan,

  544. even if it's a different role

  545. than Elijah expected.

  546. So he goes on

  547. this journey.

  548. God sends him

  549. to Mount Horeb,

  550. which is another name

  551. for Sinai,

  552. the mountain where

  553. Moses received

  554. the Ten Commandments,

  555. or the law,

  556. the whole law.

  557. And God speaks to him.

  558. So if you look

  559. in 19 verse 9,

  560. the word of the Lord

  561. came to him,

  562. What are you doing here,

  563. Elijah?

  564. And Elijah replies,

  565. I have been very zealous

  566. for the Lord God Almighty.

  567. The Israelites

  568. have rejected

  569. your covenant,

  570. torn down your altars,

  571. and put your prophets

  572. to death with the sword.

  573. I'm the only one left,

  574. and now they're trying

  575. to kill me too.

  576. The Lord said,

  577. Go out

  578. and stand on the mountain

  579. in the presence

  580. of the Lord,

  581. for the Lord

  582. is about to pass by.

  583. Then,

  584. a great

  585. and powerful wind

  586. tore the mountain

  587. apart

  588. and shattered

  589. the rocks

  590. before the Lord.

  591. That's a powerful wind.

  592. But,

  593. the Lord was not

  594. in the wind.

  595. After the wind,

  596. there was an earthquake,

  597. but the Lord

  598. was not in the earthquake.

  599. After the earthquake,

  600. there came a fire,

  601. but the Lord

  602. was not in the fire.

  603. And after the fire

  604. came a gentle whisper.

  605. Then,

  606. when Elijah heard it,

  607. he pulled his cloak

  608. over his face

  609. and went out

  610. and stood at the mouth

  611. of the cave.

  612. Then a voice said to him,

  613. What are you doing here,

  614. Elijah?

  615. He replied,

  616. I have been very zealous

  617. for the Lord God Almighty.

  618. The Israelites

  619. have rejected

  620. your covenant,

  621. torn down your altars,

  622. and put your prophets

  623. to death with the sword.

  624. I'm the only one left.

  625. Now they're trying

  626. to kill me too.

  627. The Lord said to him,

  628. Go back the way you came

  629. and go to the desert

  630. of Damascus.

  631. And when you get there,

  632. anoint Hazel,

  633. king over Aram.

  634. Also anoint Jehu,

  635. son of Nimshi,

  636. king over Israel.

  637. And anoint Elisha,

  638. son of Shephat,

  639. from Abel Melhub,

  640. to succeed you

  641. as a prophet.

  642. Jehu will put to death

  643. any who escape

  644. the sword of Hazel.

  645. And Elisha will put to death

  646. any who escape

  647. the sword of Jehu.

  648. Yet I have reserved

  649. seven thousand in Israel,

  650. all whose knees

  651. have not bowed down

  652. to Baal,

  653. and whose mouths

  654. have not kissed him.

  655. So,

  656. here on the mountain

  657. of God,

  658. God listens

  659. to Elijah's complaints

  660. twice,

  661. patiently,

  662. the exact same complaint.

  663. He doesn't even

  664. answer directly,

  665. but he does answer.

  666. He sends these

  667. powerful things.

  668. He sends a wind

  669. that breaks stones.

  670. He sends an earthquake.

  671. He sends a fire.

  672. But the Lord was not

  673. in those powerful things,

  674. the wind and the earthquake

  675. and the fire.

  676. And then he sends

  677. a gentle whisper.

  678. See,

  679. Elijah had expected

  680. God to destroy

  681. Baal worship in Israel

  682. through overwhelming

  683. miracles,

  684. which happened.

  685. Fire from heaven.

  686. So impressive.

  687. But God says

  688. his power

  689. is actually working

  690. in what was happening

  691. in the background,

  692. in the quiet

  693. of much more

  694. ordinary things,

  695. like seven thousand people

  696. who never had

  697. worshipped Baal,

  698. who never had

  699. bowed down to him,

  700. even before

  701. the miracles.

  702. Elijah thought

  703. he was the only one.

  704. He didn't even know

  705. these people existed.

  706. But God was working

  707. in them,

  708. quietly,

  709. under the radar.

  710. Then he gives us

  711. the second part

  712. of his answer

  713. to Elijah.

  714. He gives him

  715. what seems like

  716. fairly ordinary jobs,

  717. anointing ordinary

  718. political and religious

  719. leaders.

  720. No more fire

  721. from heaven,

  722. but God is working

  723. through these

  724. ordinary things.

  725. In fact,

  726. I don't have to turn there,

  727. but 2 Kings 10

  728. describes how Jehu,

  729. who Elijah

  730. is sent to anoint,

  731. was the one

  732. who put an end

  733. to Baal worship

  734. in Israel.

  735. 2 Kings 10

  736. 18 says specifically,

  737. Jehu destroyed

  738. Baal worship

  739. in Israel.

  740. Elijah himself

  741. was not the man

  742. who would accomplish

  743. what he wanted

  744. to see happen.

  745. But God gives him

  746. an important role,

  747. and the miracles

  748. are part of that role.

  749. But God actually

  750. finishes the job

  751. of destroying

  752. Baal worship

  753. in Israel

  754. through Elijah's

  755. obedience to

  756. ordinary tasks

  757. that God gives him.

  758. See,

  759. God had been working

  760. under the surface

  761. long before the

  762. miracles ever happened.

  763. And his work

  764. continued under the

  765. surface in spite

  766. of the people's

  767. rejection of those

  768. miracles.

  769. And he would

  770. continue his work

  771. in the same ways

  772. normally through

  773. ordinary quiet

  774. means going forward.

  775. Now Elijah lived

  776. a long time ago,

  777. but our God

  778. is the same God,

  779. and our ministry

  780. comes down

  781. largely to the

  782. same things.

  783. We also are

  784. calling people

  785. back to God,

  786. trying to show

  787. them the greatness

  788. of his power,

  789. of his love,

  790. of his salvation.

  791. He's the same God.

  792. He has the same

  793. power that was

  794. displayed by fire

  795. on Mount Carmel.

  796. He can do that

  797. any time.

  798. But in our prayers

  799. for God to do

  800. his work,

  801. we don't have to

  802. wait for some

  803. massively impressive

  804. sign from heaven

  805. for our friends

  806. to see.

  807. In our prayers

  808. for God to do

  809. his work,

  810. we don't have to

  811. wait for those

  812. things.

  813. We don't have to

  814. worry if God

  815. doesn't answer

  816. our prayers for

  817. big demonstrations

  818. of his power.

  819. We already have

  820. the biggest sign

  821. of all.

  822. We have a

  823. Savior who came

  824. down from heaven

  825. to die,

  826. die for our

  827. sin,

  828. and rise again

  829. in victory over

  830. it.

  831. And he's still

  832. working.

  833. God's still

  834. small voice,

  835. his gentle

  836. whisper,

  837. is still

  838. speaking life

  839. into rebellious

  840. hearts.

  841. And really,

  842. the biggest

  843. and most

  844. beautiful miracle

  845. is when God's

  846. power reaches

  847. into a cold,

  848. rebellious human

  849. heart and

  850. makes it bloom

  851. with the beauty

  852. of his love

  853. and his life

  854. by the power

  855. of the cross.

  856. And that's a

  857. miracle that he

  858. is doing now.

  859. And he's been

  860. doing it all

  861. along.

  862. But often it's

  863. done under the

  864. radar.

  865. no matter what

  866. seems to be

  867. going wrong

  868. around us.

  869. See,

  870. Elijah,

  871. Elijah couldn't

  872. see anything

  873. good from his

  874. perspective.

  875. All the

  876. headlines were

  877. bad.

  878. His personal

  879. life was,

  880. I mean,

  881. he was running

  882. for his life.

  883. He was a

  884. fugitive.

  885. And yet God

  886. shows him

  887. that God

  888. has been

  889. working in

  890. ways that

  891. Elijah couldn't

  892. see and

  893. couldn't have

  894. even imagined.

  895. and that

  896. God will

  897. continue to

  898. do his

  899. quiet,

  900. incredible

  901. miracles in

  902. the hearts

  903. of people.

  904. And he's

  905. going to keep

  906. doing that

  907. until Jesus

  908. returns.

  909. So don't

  910. think,

  911. don't think

  912. for a second

  913. that God

  914. is not

  915. working.

  916. Just because

  917. you may not

  918. see the

  919. powerful

  920. demonstrations

  921. and answers

  922. to prayer

  923. that we

  924. long for,

  925. the good

  926. things that

  927. we ask

  928. for,

  929. or the

  930. impressive

  931. miracles

  932. that we

  933. want,

  934. Elijah saw

  935. those answers.

  936. He saw

  937. those demonstrations

  938. of God's

  939. power.

  940. And yet he

  941. also saw

  942. that people

  943. still refused

  944. to accept

  945. God.

  946. They still

  947. rejected him,

  948. even with all

  949. the evidence

  950. literally coming

  951. down from

  952. heaven.

  953. He saw

  954. that what

  955. people really

  956. need is not

  957. a big display

  958. of power

  959. out there.

  960. We need a

  961. miracle in

  962. our hearts.

  963. And that's a

  964. miracle that

  965. God is

  966. doing right

  967. now.

  968. It's a

  969. miracle that

  970. he chooses

  971. to do

  972. through our

  973. ordinary,

  974. unimpressive

  975. obedience to

  976. seemingly small,

  977. mundane things

  978. as a means

  979. to his

  980. greatest work.

  981. God is not

  982. limited,

  983. he's not

  984. caught off guard,

  985. even when things

  986. seem to be

  987. going wrong.

  988. Often God is

  989. doing his

  990. quiet work behind

  991. the scenes in

  992. ways we never

  993. would have

  994. thought to look

  995. for.

  996. So my

  997. encouragement

  998. for you

  999. this morning

  1000. is just to

  1001. relentlessly

  1002. hang on to

  1003. him.

  1004. No matter

  1005. how small

  1006. it may be,

  1007. just simply

  1008. take the

  1009. next small

  1010. step of

  1011. obedience as

  1012. he leads.

  1013. We have a

  1014. God who

  1015. chooses to

  1016. use that

  1017. small,

  1018. simple

  1019. obedience

  1020. more often

  1021. than he

  1022. chooses to

  1023. use the

  1024. big,

  1025. impressive

  1026. miracles.

  1027. people.

  1028. His still

  1029. small voice,

  1030. his gentle

  1031. whisper is

  1032. still at

  1033. work through

  1034. his people,

  1035. through you.

  1036. So don't

  1037. discount your

  1038. ordinary

  1039. obedience.

  1040. Jeremiah says,

  1041. do not

  1042. despise the

  1043. day of

  1044. small things.

  1045. Our God

  1046. loves to

  1047. use small

  1048. things,

  1049. unimpressive

  1050. things,

  1051. weak people

  1052. doing small,

  1053. unimpressive,

  1054. obedient things

  1055. to do

  1056. his greatest

  1057. work.

  1058. Amen.

  1059. Amen.

  1060. Thank you,

  1061. sir.

  1062. often when

  1063. we hear

  1064. God's

  1065. word,

  1066. so we

  1067. quick to

  1068. just move

  1069. on to a

  1070. song,

  1071. to something

  1072. else.

  1073. Let's just

  1074. take a few

  1075. moments just

  1076. to think and

  1077. dwell on the

  1078. things that

  1079. Seth has been

  1080. talking about.

  1081. We'll be going

  1082. out of here,

  1083. we'll be doing

  1084. ordinary things

  1085. in our lives

  1086. this week.

  1087. We'll be going

  1088. to jobs,

  1089. we might be

  1090. minding children,

  1091. we might be

  1092. going to

  1093. college,

  1094. we might be

  1095. meeting people,

  1096. but in all

  1097. that it's

  1098. amazing to

  1099. think that

  1100. God is still

  1101. working.

  1102. We don't

  1103. always see

  1104. what God

  1105. is doing,

  1106. but we can

  1107. take encouragement

  1108. from his

  1109. word that

  1110. he is

  1111. working.

  1112. What a

  1113. wonderful picture

  1114. as well of

  1115. that gentle

  1116. voice of

  1117. God just

  1118. whispering into

  1119. a cold

  1120. heart,

  1121. changing them

  1122. from being

  1123. a rebellious,

  1124. sinful human

  1125. being,

  1126. blossoming

  1127. into a

  1128. child of

  1129. God,

  1130. someone who

  1131. is loved

  1132. by God

  1133. as they

  1134. repent of

  1135. their sin

  1136. and turn

  1137. away and

  1138. turn to

  1139. Jesus.

  1140. let's

  1141. just pause

  1142. in our

  1143. seats,

  1144. just close

  1145. our eyes,

  1146. maybe bow

  1147. our heads

  1148. and we

  1149. can thank

  1150. God that

  1151. he does

  1152. work in

  1153. the ordinary

  1154. things in

  1155. life,

  1156. not to

  1157. be discouraged

  1158. when we

  1159. don't see

  1160. these big

  1161. exciting

  1162. things because

  1163. we're people

  1164. who have

  1165. lost our

  1166. awe of

  1167. things.

  1168. We see

  1169. so much

  1170. on the

  1171. internet,

  1172. on television

  1173. and we've

  1174. lost that

  1175. sense of

  1176. awe of

  1177. things and

  1178. we want

  1179. really

  1180. something big

  1181. to happen,

  1182. but God

  1183. works in

  1184. those small

  1185. things.

  1186. So let's

  1187. just bow

  1188. our heads,

  1189. perhaps even

  1190. to pray that

  1191. God would

  1192. work a

  1193. miracle in

  1194. those that

  1195. we love,

  1196. who do

  1197. not know

  1198. Jesus yet,

  1199. that he

  1200. would change

  1201. that cold

  1202. heart,

  1203. a heart of

  1204. stone to

  1205. be a heart

  1206. of love

  1207. for the

  1208. Lord.

  1209. Let's just

  1210. respond in

  1211. quietness

  1212. before God.

  1213. That

  1214. ale
