  1. Well, have your Bibles ready.

  2. We're going to be looking at a few different passages this morning.

  3. I came across an article about a guy called Raphael Samuel.

  4. He's 27 years old and he's suing his parents for being born.

  5. That's what the article's about, suing his parents for being born.

  6. Here's what it says.

  7. Mr. Samuel's belief is rooted in what's called antinatalism,

  8. a philosophy that argues that life is so full of misery

  9. that people should stop procreating immediately.

  10. He quotes, there's no point to humanity.

  11. So many people are suffering.

  12. If humanity is extinct, earth and animals would be happier.

  13. They'll certainly be better off.

  14. Also, no human will then suffer.

  15. Human existence is totally pointless.

  16. Now, we might be as extreme as Raphael Samuel,

  17. but I think he puts into words how we can all think about suffering.

  18. That is, there is no purpose in suffering.

  19. It's pointless.

  20. All suffering does is bring misery, pain and sorrow.

  21. It achieves nothing.

  22. It accomplishes nothing.

  23. Suffering is a curse.

  24. But Scripture gives us a different perspective.

  25. Rather than see suffering as a curse,

  26. we should see it as a gift we can thank God for.

  27. A well-known verse, Romans 8, verse 28,

    Romans 8:28

  28. And we know that in all things,

  29. God works for the good of those who love him,

  30. who have been called according to his purpose.

  31. In all things.

  32. In every suffering of life.

  33. When cancer strikes,

  34. when depression weighs us down,

  35. when an accident takes a loved one,

  36. when circumstances overwhelm us,

  37. in all things.

  38. In every suffering of life.

  39. God works for our good.

  40. Now, that doesn't mean that the suffering is itself good.

  41. Rather, suffering in the hands of God

  42. is used for good purposes.

  43. So when disease or destruction or death should come,

  44. we can trust him

  45. that he has all things

  46. in his hands.

  47. And he will work good purposes in us

  48. and through us.

  49. When our daughter Rebecca was young,

  50. I took her into a room

  51. against her will

  52. to a group of people she didn't know.

  53. I handed her over to them,

  54. pulled her grip from my hand,

  55. and I watched as they pushed a sharp needle

  56. into her arm.

  57. Screaming from fear and pain,

  58. she kept looking at me

  59. as if to say,

  60. why are you doing this to me?

  61. Make it stop.

  62. But what she didn't know

  63. and what I knew

  64. was that it was for her good.

  65. The pain was necessary

  66. so that they could perform surgery

  67. and insert her cochlear implant.

  68. You see, there's two ways

  69. we can see or view our suffering.

  70. We can see it as a curse,

  71. an unexplained tragedy

  72. that God has no control over,

  73. that causes us misery and hardship.

  74. Or second, we can see it as a gift,

  75. a struggle or a trial,

  76. sent by God

  77. or allowed by God

  78. that is for our good

  79. and for his glory.

  80. Now, as I say these words,

  81. I realise that it's not easy to accept,

  82. not easy to understand,

  83. yet by looking to God,

  84. we can learn to embrace

  85. and accept all things

  86. as something

  87. from our Heavenly Father,

  88. a gift from our Sovereign Father.

  89. So over these next two weeks,

  90. starting today,

  91. we're going to be looking at

  92. ten ways

  93. God uses suffering

  94. for our good.

  95. We're going to look at

  96. four of them

  97. this morning.

  98. Here's the first.

  99. Embracing suffering

  100. as a gift

  101. can lead

  102. to salvation.

  103. Turn with me, please,

  104. to Exodus chapter 2.

    Exodus 2 chapter mention

  105. I haven't got page numbers,

  106. so if you're nearby,

  107. somebody who's struggling,

  108. just no embarrassment,

  109. just ask for the page

  110. or ask them to direct you

  111. where it is.

  112. Exodus 2.

  113. This is perhaps the first

  114. and ultimate reason

  115. for all kinds of suffering

  116. and we see this pattern

  117. throughout Scripture.

  118. In Exodus 2,

  119. which opens up

  120. with God's people

  121. in Egypt,

  122. Exodus 2,

    Exodus 2:23

  123. verse 23.

  124. During that long period,

  125. the king of Egypt died

  126. and the Israelites groaned

  127. in their slavery

  128. and cried out

  129. and their cry for help

  130. because of their slavery

  131. went up to God.

  132. God heard their groaning

  133. and he remembered

  134. his covenant

  135. with Abraham,

  136. with Isaac,

  137. and with Jacob.

  138. That covenant,

  139. that promise

  140. that he would call

  141. and bring a people

  142. to himself.

  143. So God looked

  144. on the Israelites

  145. and was concerned

  146. about them.

  147. Now jump down

  148. to chapter 3,

  149. verse 7.

  150. The Lord said,

  151. I have indeed seen

  152. the misery

  153. of my people in Egypt.

  154. I have heard them

  155. crying out

  156. because of their slave drivers

  157. and I am concerned

  158. about their suffering.

  159. So I have come down

  160. to rescue them

  161. from the land

  162. of the Egyptians

  163. and to bring them up

  164. out of that land

  165. into a good

  166. and spacious land.

  167. You see,

  168. their suffering,

  169. their slavery,

  170. their trial

  171. caused them

  172. to cry out

  173. to God

  174. for salvation.

  175. It's not that God

  176. was immune

  177. to their suffering

  178. or didn't know

  179. what was going on.

  180. Rather,

  181. they came to see

  182. their need of God

  183. and cried out

  184. for his help.

  185. We see the same theme

  186. repeated in Psalm 107.

  187. Psalm 107.

  188. This psalm gives us

  189. a picture,

  190. a number of different

  191. pictures,

  192. describes how people

  193. turn to God

  194. in their struggle

  195. for salvation.

  196. Let me read a couple.

  197. Psalm 107

  198. starting at verse 4.

  199. Some wandered

  200. in desert wastelands

  201. finding no way

  202. to a city

  203. where they could settle.

  204. They were hungry

  205. and thirsty

  206. and their lives

  207. ebbed away.

  208. Then they cried out

  209. to the Lord

  210. in their trouble

  211. and he delivered them

  212. from their distress.

  213. Or look at verse 10.

  214. Some sat in darkness,

  215. in utter darkness,

  216. prisoners,

  217. suffering in iron chains.

  218. Because they rebelled

  219. against God's commands

  220. and despised

  221. the plans

  222. of the Most High.

  223. So he,

  224. that is God,

  225. subjected them

  226. to bitter labour.

  227. They stumbled

  228. and there was

  229. no one to help.

  230. Then they cried

  231. to the Lord,

  232. their God,

  233. in their trouble

  234. and he saved them

  235. from their distress.

  236. The author C.S. Lewis

  237. knew what it was

  238. to suffer.

  239. As a young boy,

  240. his mother had died

  241. and he was neglected

  242. emotionally by his father.

  243. He suffered ill health

  244. as a teen

  245. and then when he married,

  246. he went through

  247. the grief

  248. of watching his own wife

  249. die of cancer.

  250. And reflecting on

  251. his experiences

  252. of suffering,

  253. he said this,

  254. a well-known quote,

  255. God whispers to us

  256. in our pleasures,

  257. speaks to us

  258. in our conscience,

  259. but shouts

  260. in our pain.

  261. It is God's megaphone

  262. to rouse

  263. a deaf world.

  264. You see,

  265. all suffering

  266. can be used

  267. by God

  268. to waken us up

  269. to our need of God.

  270. That's what happened

  271. in Exodus.

  272. That's what happened

  273. in the Psalms.

  274. Let me show you

  275. one more example.

  276. Come with me,

  277. please,

  278. to Luke's Gospel,

  279. chapter 13.

  280. Luke's Gospel,

  281. chapter 13.

  282. Luke's Gospel,

  283. Luke's Gospel,

  284. starting at verse 1.

  285. Now there were some

  286. present at that time

  287. who told Jesus

  288. about the Galileans

  289. whose blood

  290. Pilate had mixed

  291. with their sacrifices.

  292. Jesus answered,

  293. Do you think

  294. that these Galileans

  295. were worse sinners

  296. than all the other

  297. Galileans

  298. because they suffered

  299. this way?

  300. I tell you,

  301. no,

  302. but unless you repent,

  303. you too will all perish.

  304. Or those 18 who died

  305. when the tower in Siloam

  306. fell on them,

  307. do you think

  308. they were more guilty

  309. than all the others

  310. living in Jerusalem?

  311. I tell you,

  312. no,

  313. but unless you repent,

  314. you too will all perish.

  315. Now this short account

  316. tells us of two kinds

  317. of suffering.

  318. If you look at verse 1,

  319. there was the time

  320. where Pilate,

  321. who was the Roman prefect,

  322. went and killed

  323. some Galileans.

  324. We don't have the full story,

  325. but it seems

  326. they were on their way

  327. up to the temple

  328. to make sacrifice,

  329. and Pilate intervened

  330. and wanted to remind

  331. everybody that he was boss

  332. and who was in charge

  333. and had them slaughtered.

  334. And then in verse 4,

  335. we read about a tower,

  336. a stone tower

  337. that had fallen

  338. and killed 18 people.

  339. And all this suffering

  340. that has gone on

  341. has made people question,

  342. why all this suffering?

  343. What's going on?

  344. Well, Jesus teaches

  345. two things through this.

  346. First,

  347. he teaches,

  348. don't assume

  349. that suffering

  350. is the result

  351. of some particular sin.

  352. Don't assume

  353. that suffering

  354. is the result

  355. of some particular sin.

  356. Look at verse 2.

  357. He says,

  358. what about these Galileans

  359. that suffered?

  360. Do you think

  361. they were worse sinners

  362. than the others

  363. who didn't suffer

  364. in this way?

  365. I tell you,

  366. no.

  367. Or down in verse 4,

  368. what about those 18 who died?

  369. Do you think

  370. they were more guilty?

  371. And that's why

  372. the tower fell on them.

  373. I tell you,

  374. no.

  375. Don't think

  376. that the degree

  377. of suffering

  378. is related

  379. to the degree

  380. of your sin.

  381. So if you sin little,

  382. you suffer little.

  383. But if you sin lots,

  384. you suffer lots.

  385. That's a wrong way

  386. of thinking,

  387. says Jesus.

  388. We mustn't think that way.

  389. Instead,

  390. Jesus is wanting

  391. to teach us

  392. and show us

  393. how we should respond

  394. to the suffering

  395. we see

  396. and experience

  397. in our life.

  398. So the second thing

  399. he teaches is

  400. repent now

  401. to escape

  402. eternal suffering.

  403. Repent now

  404. to escape

  405. eternal suffering.

  406. So verse 3,

  407. he says,

  408. I tell you,

  409. no,

  410. but unless you repent,

  411. you too will all perish.

  412. And if we miss the point,

  413. he repeats it again

  414. in verse 5,

  415. unless you repent,

  416. you too will all perish.

  417. To perish

  418. is to face

  419. the just judgment

  420. of God

  421. for our sin.

  422. It means

  423. eternal suffering,

  424. hell itself.

  425. You see,

  426. he's showing us

  427. that we've all

  428. turned from God

  429. and we all deserve

  430. to be separated

  431. from God.

  432. And Jesus is saying,

  433. repent now,

  434. turn to God

  435. for salvation

  436. or

  437. a worse suffering

  438. will come upon us.

  439. You see,

  440. our temporary sufferings,

  441. the things we see

  442. going on in our world,

  443. should awaken us

  444. to the reality

  445. of an eternal suffering.

  446. Suffering is God's megaphone

  447. to awaken,

  448. arouse,

  449. a deaf world.

  450. God takes the sufferings

  451. that we see

  452. and experience

  453. and he takes them

  454. and he uses them

  455. for good purposes

  456. to show us all

  457. that we need rescued.

  458. Or to put it another way,

  459. God in his goodness

  460. allows temporary suffering

  461. so that we will avoid

  462. eternal suffering.

  463. suffering.

  464. So the first thing

  465. we see

  466. as to the reasons

  467. or the purposes

  468. of suffering

  469. is that it can lead

  470. to salvation.

  471. It brings us

  472. to a place

  473. where we cry out

  474. to God

  475. for salvation.

  476. Second,

  477. it can lead us

  478. to depend

  479. to depend

  480. on God.

  481. You see,

  482. through our suffering

  483. we come to see

  484. that we are weak

  485. and desperately

  486. need God.

  487. Have a look with me

  488. please

  489. at 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 1 chapter mention

  490. chapter 1.

  491. 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 1 chapter mention

  492. chapter 1.

  493. Verse 8.

  494. 2 Corinthians 1.

  495. Verse 8.

  496. Paul is speaking

  497. We do not want you

  498. to be uninformed

  499. brothers and sisters

  500. about the troubles

  501. we experienced

  502. in the province

  503. of Asia.

  504. We were under

  505. great pressure

  506. far beyond

  507. our ability

  508. to endure

  509. so that we

  510. despaired

  511. of life itself.

  512. Indeed,

  513. we felt

  514. we had received

  515. the sentence

  516. of death.

  517. You see,

  518. Paul's experience

  519. of suffering

  520. was real.

  521. So real,

  522. he wants to

  523. curl up and die.

  524. He can't take

  525. anymore.

  526. And that's how

  527. suffering is.

  528. Sometimes it's

  529. relentless.

  530. We long for the

  531. pain to go away

  532. and the hurts

  533. to stop.

  534. But it just

  535. keeps coming.

  536. And rather than

  537. get better,

  538. it gets worse.

  539. But why?

  540. For what purpose?

  541. What good is there

  542. in having to

  543. go through it?

  544. Well,

  545. he tells us,

  546. look at the rest

  547. of verse 9.

  548. But this

  549. happened

  550. that we

  551. might not

  552. rely on

  553. ourselves,

  554. but on

  555. God

  556. who raises

  557. the dead.

  558. You see,

  559. we were created

  560. as dependent

  561. people.

  562. God made

  563. us and

  564. sustains us

  565. and provides

  566. for us.

  567. We're not

  568. independent

  569. beings.

  570. we're not

  571. meant to

  572. live life

  573. without

  574. God.

  575. Joni

  576. Erickson

  577. Tada,

  578. the author

  579. of the book

  580. I mentioned,

  581. A Place

  582. of Healing,

  583. has suffered

  584. terribly in

  585. her life.

  586. And she

  587. has often

  588. reached the

  589. place where,

  590. similar to

  591. as Paul has

  592. written,

  593. she despaired

  594. of life

  595. itself.

  596. But listen

  597. to how she

  598. sees her

  599. suffering.

  600. Here's a

  601. quote.

  602. She says,

  603. my weakness,

  604. that is my

  605. quadriplegia,

  606. is my

  607. greatest

  608. asset

  609. because it

  610. forces me

  611. into the

  612. arms of

  613. Christ

  614. every single

  615. morning

  616. when I

  617. can't

  618. get up.

  619. How can

  620. Joni say

  621. her suffering

  622. is her

  623. greatest

  624. asset?

  625. because Joni

  626. has come

  627. to see

  628. that embracing

  629. suffering as

  630. a gift from

  631. God has

  632. happened for

  633. good purposes.

  634. What does it

  635. say in verse

  636. 9?

  637. This

  638. happened

  639. that we

  640. might not

  641. rely on

  642. ourselves

  643. but on

  644. God

  645. who raises

  646. the dead.

  647. What is it

  648. that you

  649. struggle with

  650. today?

  651. What is

  652. your

  653. suffering?

  654. suffering?

  655. What do

  656. you fear

  657. waking up

  658. to every

  659. morning?

  660. Well,

  661. rather than

  662. fight our

  663. suffering,

  664. the invitation

  665. is to come

  666. to God in

  667. faith,

  668. to lean

  669. upon him,

  670. to depend

  671. upon him,

  672. to ask God

  673. to help us

  674. all to say,

  675. look at the

  676. quote,

  677. my weakness,

  678. that is

  679. my,

  680. now you

  681. fill in the

  682. blank,

  683. whatever your

  684. suffering is,

  685. is my

  686. greatest

  687. asset

  688. because it

  689. forces me

  690. into the

  691. arms of

  692. Christ every

  693. single morning

  694. when I

  695. can't get

  696. up.

  697. Embracing

  698. suffering as

  699. a gift

  700. leads us

  701. to depend

  702. on God.

  703. third,

  704. embracing

  705. suffering as

  706. a gift

  707. can stop

  708. us

  709. drifting

  710. from God.

  711. Come with

  712. me please

  713. to Psalm

  714. 119,

  715. 119,

  716. verse

  717. 67,

  718. 67,

  719. you see,

  720. we are

  721. all born

  722. with

  723. wandering

  724. hearts

  725. and

  726. rather than

  727. turn to

  728. God,

  729. we can

  730. run

  731. from God.

  732. So have

  733. a look at

  734. 119,

  735. verse

  736. 67,

  737. before I

  738. was afflicted

  739. I went

  740. astray

  741. but now

  742. I obey

  743. your word.

  744. The author

  745. writes what

  746. we all

  747. experience.

  748. We can

  749. so quickly

  750. drift from

  751. God.

  752. Like

  753. sheep we

  754. wander

  755. astray and

  756. get ourselves

  757. into all

  758. kinds of

  759. trouble.

  760. We turn

  761. our backs

  762. on God

  763. and God

  764. can use

  765. the suffering

  766. that we

  767. face in

  768. our life

  769. for good

  770. purposes

  771. to bring

  772. us back

  773. to him.

  774. Look

  775. again

  776. verse 67

  777. before I

  778. was afflicted

  779. I went

  780. astray

  781. but now

  782. because of

  783. what has

  784. happened

  785. I obey

  786. your word.

  787. It sounds

  788. harsh.

  789. It seems

  790. evil

  791. even

  792. cruel.

  793. It seems

  794. like a

  795. punishment

  796. from God

  797. to beat

  798. us back

  799. into line

  800. but that's

  801. not our

  802. God.

  803. In fact

  804. the author

  805. sees it

  806. all as

  807. good for

  808. him.

  809. Look at

  810. verse 68.

  811. You are

  812. good

  813. and what

  814. you do

  815. is good.

  816. Teach

  817. me your

  818. decrees.

  819. Verse 71

  820. it was

  821. good

  822. for me

  823. to be

  824. afflicted

  825. so that

  826. I might

  827. learn

  828. your

  829. decrees.

  830. The writer

  831. to the

  832. Hebrews

  833. says the

  834. same thing.

  835. You can

  836. follow with

  837. me Hebrews

    Hebrews 12 chapter mention

  838. chapter 12.

  839. Hebrews

    Hebrews 12 chapter mention

  840. chapter 12

  841. and starting

  842. in the

  843. middle of

  844. verse 5.

  845. We'll pick

  846. it up

  847. on the

  848. quote

  849. from

  850. verse 5.

  851. He says

  852. my son

  853. do not

  854. make light

  855. of the

  856. Lord's

  857. discipline

  858. and do

  859. not lose

  860. heart

  861. when he

  862. rebukes

  863. you

  864. because

  865. the Lord

  866. disciplines

  867. the one

  868. he loves

  869. and he

  870. chastens

  871. everyone

  872. he accepts

  873. as his

  874. son.

  875. Down

  876. to verse

  877. 10.

  878. See

  879. here he's

  880. speaking about

  881. our earthly

  882. human fathers.

  883. He says

  884. they disciplined

  885. us for a

  886. while

  887. as they

  888. thought

  889. best

  890. but in

  891. contrast

  892. God

  893. disciplines

  894. us for

  895. our good

  896. in order

  897. that we

  898. may share

  899. in his

  900. holiness.

  901. No

  902. discipline

  903. seems pleasant

  904. at the time

  905. but painful.

  906. Later on

  907. however it

  908. produces a

  909. harvest of

  910. righteousness

  911. and peace

  912. for those

  913. who've been

  914. trained

  915. by it.

  916. John

  917. Piper

  918. put it

  919. like this

  920. suffering

  921. is

  922. designed

  923. to

  924. destroy

  925. the

  926. appetite

  927. for

  928. sin.

  929. God

  930. in his

  931. goodness

  932. he

  933. allows

  934. and

  935. permits

  936. all

  937. kinds

  938. of

  939. struggle

  940. so that

  941. we deal

  942. with the

  943. sin

  944. in our

  945. life

  946. so that

  947. we become

  948. more like

  949. him.

  950. And as we

  951. said it

  952. doesn't mean

  953. that our

  954. degree of

  955. suffering is

  956. related to

  957. the degree

  958. of our

  959. sin.

  960. So if I'm

  961. suffering lots

  962. then I have

  963. more sin

  964. to deal

  965. with.

  966. That's not

  967. how we are

  968. to see it.

  969. Rather

  970. that when

  971. things happen

  972. as we go

  973. through our

  974. trial, as we

  975. go through

  976. our struggle

  977. it gives us

  978. opportunity to

  979. examine our

  980. hearts

  981. and put to

  982. death the

  983. sin that

  984. breaks us

  985. and entangles

  986. us.

  987. So third

  988. embracing

  989. suffering as

  990. a gift

  991. from God

  992. can stop

  993. us from

  994. drifting

  995. from God.

  996. And then

  997. fourth

  998. embracing

  999. suffering as

  1000. a gift

  1001. from God

  1002. can lead

  1003. to spiritual

  1004. renewal.

  1005. 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 4 chapter mention

  1006. chapter 4

  1007. 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 4 chapter mention

  1008. chapter 4

  1009. chapter 4

  1010. You see

  1011. it's God's

  1012. design and

  1013. plan to

  1014. use suffering

  1015. to keep us

  1016. close to

  1017. himself and

  1018. to change

  1019. us for

  1020. glory.

  1021. 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 4:16

  1022. 4 verse

  1023. 16

  1024. Therefore we

  1025. do not

  1026. lose heart

  1027. though

  1028. outwardly we

  1029. are wasting

  1030. away yet

  1031. inwardly we

  1032. are being

  1033. renewed day

  1034. by day for

  1035. our light and

  1036. momentary troubles

  1037. are achieving

  1038. for us an

  1039. eternal glory

  1040. that far

  1041. outweighs

  1042. them all.

  1043. Paul's

  1044. experience again

  1045. is our

  1046. experience isn't

  1047. it?

  1048. Look at

  1049. verse 16

  1050. He says

  1051. we are

  1052. wasting

  1053. away

  1054. every day

  1055. through the

  1056. sufferings we

  1057. face our

  1058. bodies our

  1059. lives are

  1060. breaking down

  1061. cancer destroys

  1062. arthritis

  1063. weakens

  1064. eyes fail

  1065. our hearing

  1066. goes our

  1067. ability to

  1068. remember is

  1069. lost and

  1070. when we

  1071. suffer when

  1072. we experience

  1073. this wasting

  1074. away we

  1075. lose heart

  1076. don't we?

  1077. We want to

  1078. give up

  1079. we live in

  1080. hopeless despair

  1081. like Raphael

  1082. Samuel that we

  1083. quoted at the

  1084. beginning this

  1085. wasting away

  1086. it's all

  1087. pointless

  1088. there's nothing

  1089. to this

  1090. suffering

  1091. but

  1092. verse 16

  1093. he says

  1094. therefore we

  1095. do not

  1096. lose

  1097. heart

  1098. why does

  1099. he not

  1100. lose

  1101. heart

  1102. how can

  1103. he have

  1104. hope

  1105. in the

  1106. midst of

  1107. suffering

  1108. well let's

  1109. read verse 16

  1110. again

  1111. we do not

  1112. lose heart

  1113. though outwardly

  1114. we are wasting

  1115. away

  1116. yet inwardly

  1117. we are being

  1118. renewed

  1119. day by day

  1120. you see for the

  1121. Christian there are

  1122. two processes

  1123. happening at

  1124. once

  1125. there's

  1126. wasting

  1127. and there's

  1128. renewal

  1129. but the

  1130. point is

  1131. they're

  1132. connected

  1133. to one

  1134. another

  1135. the

  1136. wasting

  1137. of our

  1138. lives

  1139. leads to

  1140. the renewal

  1141. of our

  1142. lives

  1143. the

  1144. suffering

  1145. that we

  1146. go through

  1147. leads to

  1148. glory

  1149. look at

  1150. verse 17

  1151. for our

  1152. light

  1153. and momentary

  1154. troubles

  1155. this

  1156. wasting away

  1157. that we

  1158. experience

  1159. is not

  1160. for nothing

  1161. it is

  1162. achieving

  1163. for us

  1164. an

  1165. eternal

  1166. glory

  1167. that far

  1168. outweighs

  1169. them all

  1170. our

  1171. hurts

  1172. our

  1173. pains

  1174. all our

  1175. wasting

  1176. away

  1177. is all

  1178. taken

  1179. by God

  1180. and is

  1181. used for

  1182. our daily

  1183. renewal

  1184. in the gym

  1185. where I go

  1186. on the wall

  1187. is this

  1188. great big

  1189. sign

  1190. it says

  1191. the pain

  1192. you feel

  1193. today

  1194. is the

  1195. strength

  1196. you feel

  1197. tomorrow

  1198. in other

  1199. words

  1200. the suffering

  1201. of a

  1202. workout

  1203. leads to

  1204. a greater

  1205. renewing

  1206. and I think

  1207. that's what's

  1208. going on

  1209. here

  1210. every day

  1211. he says

  1212. every

  1213. moment

  1214. of pain

  1215. every

  1216. minute

  1217. of hurt

  1218. that we

  1219. experience

  1220. is taken

  1221. by God

  1222. and used

  1223. by God

  1224. to renew

  1225. us

  1226. to strengthen

  1227. us

  1228. so that

  1229. we are

  1230. kept

  1231. for glory

  1232. in our

  1233. suffering

  1234. we are

  1235. faced

  1236. we're

  1237. confronted

  1238. with our

  1239. powerlessness

  1240. our

  1241. inabilities

  1242. and it

  1243. moves us

  1244. back to

  1245. God

  1246. who

  1247. renews

  1248. us

  1249. and

  1250. fills

  1251. us

  1252. with

  1253. all

  1254. that we

  1255. need

  1256. for that

  1257. moment

  1258. so in

  1259. our

  1260. suffering

  1261. we do

  1262. not

  1263. lose

  1264. heart

  1265. our

  1266. sufferings

  1267. are not

  1268. hopeless

  1269. meaningless

  1270. or

  1271. pointless

  1272. God

  1273. in his

  1274. sovereignty

  1275. takes them

  1276. and he

  1277. uses them

  1278. for good

  1279. renewing

  1280. us

  1281. spiritually

  1282. day

  1283. by day

  1284. so forth

  1285. embracing

  1286. suffering

  1287. as a

  1288. gift

  1289. can lead

  1290. to

  1291. spiritual

  1292. renewal

  1293. suffering

  1294. is never

  1295. easy

  1296. we have

  1297. many

  1298. questions

  1299. as to

  1300. why

  1301. yet as

  1302. we see

  1303. through his

  1304. word

  1305. God

  1306. takes

  1307. the

  1308. worst

  1309. of

  1310. things

  1311. not

  1312. that

  1313. those

  1314. things

  1315. are

  1316. good

  1317. in

  1318. and

  1319. of

  1320. themselves

  1321. but

  1322. God

  1323. takes

  1324. the

  1325. worst

  1326. of

  1327. things

  1328. that

  1329. can

  1330. ever

  1331. happen

  1332. and

  1333. uses

  1334. them

  1335. he

  1336. transforms

  1337. them

  1338. for

  1339. good

  1340. purposes

  1341. in

  1342. our

  1343. life

  1344. remember

  1345. the

  1346. verse

  1347. we quoted

  1348. at the

  1349. beginning

  1350. Romans 8

    Romans 8:28

  1351. verse 28

  1352. we know

  1353. that in

  1354. all

  1355. things

  1356. God

  1357. works

  1358. for the

  1359. good

  1360. of those

  1361. who love

  1362. him

  1363. who have

  1364. been

  1365. called

  1366. according

  1367. to his

  1368. purpose

  1369. in

  1370. all

  1371. things

  1372. in

  1373. every

  1374. experience

  1375. of

  1376. life

  1377. God

  1378. works

  1379. for our

  1380. good

  1381. through

  1382. our

  1383. suffering

  1384. he can

  1385. use

  1386. it

  1387. to

  1388. save

  1389. us

  1390. as

  1391. we

  1392. call

  1393. out

  1394. to

  1395. him

  1396. and

  1397. cry

  1398. to

  1399. him

  1400. for

  1401. help

  1402. he

  1403. uses

  1404. it

  1405. to

  1406. cause

  1407. us

  1408. to

  1409. depend

  1410. upon

  1411. him

  1412. to

  1413. lean

  1414. upon

  1415. him

  1416. he

  1417. uses

  1418. it

  1419. to

  1420. stop

  1421. us

  1422. from

  1423. drifting

  1424. from

  1425. him

  1426. into

  1427. further

  1428. trouble

  1429. and

  1430. away

  1431. from

  1432. our

  1433. relationship

  1434. with

  1435. him

  1436. and

  1437. he

  1438. uses

  1439. our

  1440. suffering

  1441. to

  1442. strengthen

  1443. us

  1444. and renew

  1445. us

  1446. to

  1447. keep

  1448. us

  1449. to

  1450. keep

  1451. us

  1452. close

  1453. to

  1454. himself

  1455. so

  1456. that

  1457. he

  1458. will

  1459. bring

  1460. us

  1461. to

  1462. glory

  1463. away

  1464. I

  1465. don't

  1466. know

  1467. why

  1468. God

  1469. doesn't

  1470. remove

  1471. all

  1472. the

  1473. suffering

  1474. but

  1475. I

  1476. can

  1477. see

  1478. that

  1479. God

  1480. uses

  1481. our

  1482. trials

  1483. and

  1484. struggles

  1485. to

  1486. keep

  1487. us

  1488. close

  1489. to

  1490. himself

  1491. so

  1492. that

  1493. we

  1494. will

  1495. be

  1496. with

  1497. him

  1498. may

  1499. God

  1500. give

  1501. us

  1502. strength

  1503. to

  1504. follow

  1505. what

  1506. he

  1507. says

  1508. and

  1509. to

  1510. embrace

  1511. the

  1512. things

  1513. that

  1514. are

  1515. the

  1516. most

  1517. difficult

  1518. in

  1519. our

  1520. life

  1521. and

  1522. to

  1523. see

  1524. them

  1525. as

  1526. good

  1527. let's

  1528. pray
