  1. Father, you have given to us wonderful gifts.

  2. You have given to us the gift of your word,

  3. inspired by you, written down,

  4. so that we can read it and hear your voice to us today.

  5. And thank you that you have given to us also the gift of your Holy Spirit

  6. to open up our minds,

  7. that we may understand not just intellectually,

  8. but we may understand spiritually the things that you are teaching us and showing us.

  9. And we ask for his help,

  10. that we may understand what it is to be your people.

  11. And we ask, Father, that through our study this morning,

  12. we would be encouraged,

  13. and we would be built up together,

  14. and that we would live well as your people in this world.

  15. We ask this in Jesus' name. Amen.

  16. So what comes to mind when you hear the word church?

  17. Perhaps a worship service you attend on a Sunday morning.

  18. Maybe it's an old building with beautiful architecture and stained glass windows.

  19. Maybe you see church as an outdated institution that's no longer relevant.

  20. Or perhaps church stirs up emotions of fear and hate,

  21. memories of abuse and hurt.

  22. It's important then for us when we think about church

  23. to understand what we mean by church.

  24. Well, in the Bible, the word simply means

  25. a gathering of God's people.

  26. In fact, the whole story of the Bible is God's plan

  27. and God's promise to create a people for himself,

  28. a people who are gathered around the Lord Jesus.

  29. So at the very beginning of our Bibles,

  30. in Exodus 6 verse 7, it says this.

    Exodus 6:7

  31. I think it's all on your notes there.

  32. I will take you as my own people

  33. and I will be your God.

  34. So God's promise to his people Israel

  35. to gather them to himself, to rescue them,

  36. and they would be his people.

  37. And then at the very end of the Bible,

  38. in Revelation chapter 21,

    Revelation 21 chapter mention

  39. we get the fulfillment of that promise

  40. and that plan.

  41. where it says,

  42. look, God's dwelling place is now among the people.

  43. They will be his people

  44. and God himself will be with them

  45. and be their God.

  46. So God's plan from before the creation of the world

  47. is to create a people for himself

  48. and he is fulfilling that throughout history.

  49. And one day,

  50. that will come to its ultimate fulfillment

  51. as we are gathered around the Lord Jesus

  52. in the new heavens and the new earth.

  53. So first, when we come to think about church,

  54. we need to see it as a who,

  55. not a what.

  56. Church is not a building.

  57. This is not church.

  58. This is the community center.

  59. The church may be in this building,

  60. but it's not the building itself.

  61. It's not a service

  62. or it's not an institution.

  63. It is a people who are saved by God

  64. and are belonging to God.

  65. So look, for example,

  66. how Paul writes his letter to the church

  67. in Ephesus chapter 1, verse 1.

  68. Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus

  69. by the will of God,

  70. to God's holy people in Ephesus,

  71. the faithful,

  72. that is those who have faith in Christ Jesus.

  73. And then at the end of the letter,

  74. the very last couple of verses,

  75. chapter 6, verse 23 and 24,

  76. he says,

  77. Peace to the brothers and sisters.

  78. And love with faith from God,

  79. the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

  80. Grace to all who love our Lord Jesus Christ

  81. with an undying love.

  82. So the church is a people,

  83. brothers and sisters,

  84. united together in their faith in Christ

  85. and their love for Christ.

  86. They are God's holy people

  87. who have been called out

  88. from the world to himself.

  89. So when we think about church,

  90. we think who,

  91. not a what.

  92. Second, when we think of church,

  93. we need to see it as both

  94. a local gathering

  95. and a heavenly gathering.

  96. So again, go back to chapter 1, verse 1.

  97. So we're thinking of church as a who,

  98. it's a people,

  99. but it's also a local gathering

  100. and a heavenly gathering.

  101. So verse 1, he says,

  102. to God's holy people in Ephesus.

  103. It's a local gathering of God's people

  104. in the city of Ephesus.

  105. And that's how Paul writes many of his letters.

  106. So he writes to the church of God in Corinth.

  107. Or to all God's holy people in Christ Jesus at Philippi.

  108. To God's holy people in Colossae.

  109. So the church is a local gathering of believers in Christ.

  110. And this is what this gathering is here.

  111. It's a local gathering of believers in Christ,

  112. in Carigalline.

  113. But it's much more than just a local gathering of believers.

  114. Ralph referred to this earlier on,

  115. just before we sang.

  116. So chapter 2, verse 6.

  117. So the believers are a local gathering,

  118. but also, chapter 2, verse 6,

  119. And God raised us up with Christ

  120. and seated us with him

  121. in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus.

  122. So where is the church now?

  123. Well, it's a local gathering,

  124. but in verse 6, chapter 2, verse 6,

  125. it's also saying that we are already seated

  126. with Christ in the heavenly realms.

  127. Now, we don't fully experience that yet

  128. in all its fullness,

  129. but from God's perspective,

  130. as he looks at the church now,

  131. we are already part of the eternal heavenly gathering.

  132. You see, the church is not just this temporary thing we do

  133. until we get to heaven

  134. and then we dump church and put it to one side.

  135. No, heaven is church in all its fullness.

  136. It's a continuation.

  137. We don't stop being the church

  138. when Christ comes again.

  139. We continue as the church for all eternity.

  140. You see, the local church,

  141. this gathering of believers here in this location,

  142. is a visible manifestation.

  143. It's a picture of the eternal heavenly gathering

  144. that is to come.

  145. John Stott, a well-respected writer and pastor,

  146. put it like this.

  147. You have it on your notes.

  148. Follow along with me.

  149. He explains it like this.

  150. He says,

  151. The church lies at the very centre of the eternal purpose of God.

  152. It is not a divine afterthought.

  153. It's not an accident in history.

  154. On the contrary, the church is God's new community.

  155. For his purpose, conceived in past eternity,

  156. being worked out in history,

  157. and to be perfected in a future eternity,

  158. is not just to save isolated individuals

  159. and so perpetuate our loneliness,

  160. but rather to build his church.

  161. That is, to call out of the world

  162. a people for his own glory.

  163. So the church isn't just this made-up idea.

  164. It is God's plan and purpose from before time began,

  165. which will reach its fulfilment

  166. when all God's people

  167. from all lots of local churches

  168. from around the world

  169. will be gathered together with him.

  170. God's church is at the very centre

  171. of his plan and promise for the world.

  172. So let's unpack this a little bit more

  173. under two headings.

  174. First, defining who the church is.

  175. Defining who the church is.

  176. We've seen that the church is a who.

  177. It's a people.

  178. It's also a local gathering,

  179. which is a visible expression

  180. of our eternal heavenly gathering.

  181. But who is the church?

  182. Is everybody here in this room

  183. or in this building

  184. part of the church?

  185. Can anyone be part of the church?

  186. I mean, how do you become

  187. part of the church?

  188. Well, hopefully, the Bible gives us

  189. a great image for the church,

  190. the head and the body.

  191. So have a look at chapter 1,

  192. verse 21.

  193. Ephesians chapter 1, verse 21.

    Ephesians 1:21

  194. So here, Paul has been talking about

  195. how God had raised Christ from the dead.

  196. And he tells us Christ was raised,

  197. verse 21,

  198. far and above all rule and authority,

  199. power and dominion,

  200. and every name that is invoked,

  201. not only in the present age,

  202. but also in the one to come.

  203. And God placed all things

  204. under Christ's feet

  205. and appointed him to be head

  206. over everything for the church.

  207. So Christ is the head.

  208. Christ is the ruler of the church.

  209. He has absolute power

  210. and supreme authority

  211. over all people

  212. and over all things,

  213. over everything in this universe.

  214. He is over it all

  215. for the good of the church.

  216. I don't own the church.

  217. I may be pastor of this local church,

  218. but I don't own it.

  219. We don't own the church.

  220. The church belongs to Christ.

  221. He is the head.

  222. He is the supreme one

  223. over all things.

  224. Now read on.

  225. The church, verse 23,

  226. which is his body,

  227. the fullness of him

  228. who fills everything

  229. in every way.

  230. So the church,

  231. Christ is the head.

  232. The church is the body.

  233. We're under the head.

  234. We submit to the head.

  235. But more than that,

  236. the head is our source of life.

  237. That's what I think is meant

  238. by that little phrase,

  239. the fullness of him

  240. who fills everything

  241. in every way.

  242. Not only is the church

  243. an expression of Christ,

  244. the body of Christ,

  245. but all of Christ

  246. is in his people.

  247. So he is the source

  248. of true life.

  249. And without the head,

  250. there is no life.

  251. So if Christ is the head

  252. and the church,

  253. the people,

  254. are the body,

  255. well, we're still back

  256. to the same question.

  257. Who is part of the body?

  258. Who gets to make up

  259. the body of Christ?

  260. Well, two things.

  261. First,

  262. the body

  263. are sinners

  264. who are saved

  265. by grace.

  266. The body

  267. are sinners

  268. saved by grace.

  269. So chapter 2,

  270. verse 1.

  271. As for you,

  272. he's talking to

  273. the local church,

  274. as for you,

  275. you are dead

  276. in your transgressions

  277. and sins.

  278. Now that leaves us

  279. in a dangerous position.

  280. To be dead in our sin

  281. is not a good place to be.

  282. It's not just living

  283. as we please.

  284. It puts us in danger.

  285. We see that at the end

  286. of verse 3.

  287. Because of our sin,

  288. end of verse 3,

  289. like the rest,

  290. we were by nature

  291. deserving of wrath.

  292. Because of our rebellion,

  293. because of our turning

  294. against God,

  295. we're under

  296. his just judgment.

  297. And that's a dangerous

  298. place to be

  299. because to stand

  300. before God's judgment

  301. means to be

  302. separated from him

  303. for all eternity,

  304. not as the gathered

  305. people of God

  306. in the new heavens

  307. and the new earth,

  308. but separated

  309. from the people of God

  310. and from God himself

  311. in hell.

  312. But thankfully,

  313. God kept his promise

  314. to gather a people

  315. to himself.

  316. So, verse 4,

  317. but because of his

  318. great love for us,

  319. God, who is rich

  320. in mercy,

  321. made us alive

  322. with Christ

  323. even when we were

  324. dead in transgressions.

  325. It is by grace

  326. you have been saved.

  327. God has intervened

  328. into our lives

  329. by his Son,

  330. the Lord Jesus Christ.

  331. He has saved,

  332. he has rescued

  333. his people

  334. by taking upon himself

  335. the judgment

  336. they deserve,

  337. the wrath of God

  338. has fallen on Christ

  339. and in its place

  340. they are given

  341. new life

  342. with Christ.

  343. And that gift

  344. of salvation

  345. is for all those

  346. who will trust in him.

  347. So,

  348. if today

  349. you are here

  350. and your faith

  351. is in Jesus Christ,

  352. you are saved.

  353. It's by grace.

  354. It's not because

  355. of something you've done.

  356. It's not because

  357. of your background

  358. or your heritage

  359. or your family

  360. who you belong to.

  361. It's by God's

  362. gracious gift.

  363. You are no longer

  364. dead.

  365. You are no longer

  366. under God's wrath

  367. and judgment

  368. but you are now

  369. living under

  370. your new head,

  371. your new ruler,

  372. Jesus Christ.

  373. Verse 6,

  374. And God has raised

  375. us with Christ

  376. and seated us

  377. with him

  378. in the heavenly realms

  379. in Christ Jesus.

  380. So,

  381. those who are

  382. in the body,

  383. those who are part

  384. of the body of Christ

  385. are sinners

  386. who have been

  387. saved by grace

  388. and are now,

  389. as it were,

  390. gathered with the

  391. Lord Jesus

  392. in the heavenly realms.

  393. But not only

  394. are those saved

  395. by grace,

  396. they are now

  397. members

  398. of one body.

  399. So,

  400. have a look at

  401. chapter 3,

  402. verse 6.

  403. Those who are

  404. saved by grace

  405. become members

  406. of the one body.

  407. Chapter 3,

  408. verse 6.

  409. This mystery,

  410. so the mystery

  411. he's been talking

  412. about is not

  413. something that's

  414. secret,

  415. it has now been

  416. revealed by God,

  417. his plan and promise

  418. to make a people

  419. for himself.

  420. That's the mystery

  421. that has been

  422. revealed.

  423. So,

  424. he tells us,

  425. this mystery,

  426. is that through

  427. the gospel,

  428. the Gentiles,

  429. Gentiles are people

  430. who are not Jews,

  431. are heirs together

  432. with Israel.

  433. Members together

  434. of one body

  435. and sharers together

  436. in the promise

  437. in Christ Jesus.

  438. So,

  439. through the gospel,

  440. through the good news

  441. of Jesus Christ,

  442. as that good news

  443. spread to all

  444. different peoples

  445. from all different

  446. backgrounds,

  447. they were achieving

  448. God's plan

  449. and promise

  450. which was to bring

  451. a people together

  452. for himself.

  453. They would become

  454. members of one

  455. body,

  456. the body of Christ.

  457. So,

  458. no matter what

  459. your race is,

  460. no matter what

  461. your culture,

  462. or what your

  463. background,

  464. it doesn't matter

  465. whether you are

  466. Jew or Gentile,

  467. rich or poor,

  468. whether you are

  469. male or female,

  470. through faith in

  471. Christ,

  472. we become

  473. members of

  474. the body of

  475. Christ.

  476. Or as it has

  477. at the end

  478. of verse 6,

  479. we are sharers

  480. together in the

  481. promise in

  482. Christ Jesus.

  483. We are incorporated

  484. together as

  485. God's people.

  486. So,

  487. the body

  488. are sinners

  489. saved by grace

  490. who become

  491. members of

  492. that one body.

  493. And if we are

  494. members of the

  495. body of Christ,

  496. that is expressed

  497. in two ways.

  498. It's expressed

  499. through baptism

  500. and the Lord's

  501. Supper.

  502. So,

  503. let's take

  504. each one in

  505. turn.

  506. First,

  507. baptism.

  508. You can turn

  509. to this if you

  510. like,

  511. but I think

  512. it's on your

  513. notes.

  514. In Acts 19,

  515. Luke,

  516. the author,

  517. gives an

  518. account of

  519. when Paul

  520. first went

  521. to Ephesus.

  522. So,

  523. before there

  524. was a church,

  525. before there

  526. was a gathering

  527. of God's

  528. people,

  529. Paul went

  530. there,

  531. others had

  532. been there,

  533. they'd been

  534. teaching and

  535. sharing the

  536. good news

  537. of Christ.

  538. And as

  539. Paul went

  540. there,

  541. they had

  542. been talking

  543. about John

  544. the Baptist.

  545. And they

  546. talked about

  547. the baptism

  548. of John

  549. the Baptist.

  550. And Paul

  551. responds to

  552. their discussions

  553. and he says

  554. this in Acts

    Acts 19:4

  555. 19,

  556. verses 4 and

  557. 5.

  558. He told,

  559. Paul told

  560. the people

  561. to believe

  562. in the one

  563. coming after

  564. him.

  565. that is the

  566. one coming

  567. after John

  568. the Baptist,

  569. that is in

  570. Jesus.

  571. And as they

  572. heard about

  573. Jesus on

  574. hearing this,

  575. they were

  576. baptized into

  577. the name of

  578. the Lord

  579. Jesus.

  580. They heard

  581. the gospel,

  582. they believed

  583. the gospel,

  584. and in

  585. response,

  586. they were

  587. baptized into

  588. the name of

  589. the Lord

  590. Jesus Christ.

  591. So they

  592. effectively,

  593. when we

  594. are baptized,

  595. when they

  596. were baptized,

  597. they were

  598. saying,

  599. yes,

  600. on the one

  601. hand,

  602. I believe

  603. in Christ,

  604. I believe

  605. in Jesus,

  606. but yet I

  607. also belong

  608. to his

  609. family,

  610. to the

  611. body of

  612. Jesus,

  613. to Christ's

  614. family.

  615. So when

  616. we're being

  617. baptized,

  618. it is both

  619. a commitment

  620. to Christ

  621. to say,

  622. yes,

  623. I believe

  624. in Christ,

  625. but it is

  626. also a

  627. commitment to

  628. the church

  629. saying,

  630. yes,

  631. I am

  632. now part

  633. of God's

  634. family.

  635. And second,

  636. the Lord's

  637. Supper.

  638. I think

  639. we need

  640. to go to

  641. 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 11 chapter mention

  642. chapter 11

  643. for this.

  644. When we

  645. think about

  646. church,

  647. it's not

  648. that there's

  649. one particular

  650. letter or

  651. one particular

  652. passage in

  653. the Bible

  654. which says

  655. this is what

  656. church is

  657. all about.

  658. it's taught

  659. throughout in

  660. many different

  661. ways.

  662. So let's

  663. go to

  664. 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 11 chapter mention

  665. chapter 11.

  666. It's back

  667. a few

  668. pages.

  669. 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 11 chapter mention

  670. chapter 11.

  671. So in

  672. this section

  673. chapter 11,

  674. the second

  675. half of it

  676. is all about

  677. the Lord's

  678. Supper.

  679. chapter 11,

  680. but there's

  681. been a problem

  682. in the church.

  683. So chapter 11,

  684. verse 18.

  685. And he's

  686. responding,

  687. Paul's

  688. responding to

  689. the problem

  690. in the church.

  691. He says,

  692. in the first

  693. place,

  694. I hear that

  695. when you come

  696. together as

  697. a church,

  698. now isn't

  699. that significant?

  700. He's writing

  701. to a church

  702. and he's

  703. saying,

  704. look,

  705. as you come

  706. together,

  707. as you meet

  708. together as

  709. God's people,

  710. there are

  711. divisions among

  712. you.

  713. And to some

  714. extent,

  715. I believe

  716. it.

  717. You see,

  718. the Lord's

  719. Supper was

  720. to be a

  721. meal to

  722. remember

  723. Christ's

  724. death,

  725. which was

  726. also an

  727. expression of

  728. their unity

  729. in Christ.

  730. But that's

  731. not how they

  732. were celebrating

  733. it.

  734. Look at

  735. verse 20.

  736. He says,

  737. so then,

  738. when you

  739. come together,

  740. it is not

  741. the Lord's

  742. Supper you

  743. eat.

  744. For when

  745. you're eating,

  746. some of

  747. you go

  748. ahead with

  749. your own

  750. private

  751. supper.

  752. So,

  753. you can

  754. imagine this

  755. church gathering,

  756. there's people

  757. who are very

  758. rich and

  759. wealthy and

  760. they've got

  761. their own

  762. homes and

  763. things are

  764. going well

  765. for them and

  766. then there's

  767. people who

  768. aren't so

  769. well off and

  770. it seems

  771. they've kind

  772. of divided

  773. themselves and

  774. the wealthy

  775. ones are all

  776. off together

  777. having a

  778. great time and

  779. they're forgetting

  780. those who

  781. don't have

  782. anything.

  783. So,

  784. as a result,

  785. one person

  786. remains hungry

  787. and another

  788. one gets

  789. drunk,

  790. don't you

  791. have homes

  792. to eat and

  793. drink in?

  794. Or do you

  795. despise the

  796. church of

  797. God by

  798. humiliating

  799. those who

  800. have nothing?

  801. What shall

  802. I say to

  803. you?

  804. Shall I

  805. praise you?

  806. Certainly

  807. not in

  808. this matter.

  809. Verse 29,

  810. for those

  811. who eat

  812. and drink

  813. without

  814. discerning

  815. the body

  816. of Christ

  817. eat and

  818. drink

  819. judgment

  820. on

  821. themselves.

  822. So,

  823. it was a

  824. serious

  825. matter when

  826. they came

  827. to celebrate

  828. the Lord's

  829. Supper.

  830. They needed

  831. to remember

  832. that not

  833. only were

  834. they remembering

  835. that Christ

  836. died for

  837. them as a

  838. people,

  839. but it was

  840. also a

  841. meal where

  842. they came

  843. together in

  844. unity to

  845. express the

  846. fact that

  847. they were

  848. one body,

  849. that Christ

  850. had brought

  851. them together

  852. from all

  853. kinds of

  854. different

  855. backgrounds

  856. to be

  857. one people.

  858. So,

  859. as they

  860. ate the

  861. Lord's

  862. Supper,

  863. as they

  864. ate the

  865. bread and

  866. drank the

  867. wine together,

  868. it was an

  869. affirmation of

  870. their ongoing

  871. faith in

  872. Christ.

  873. Yes,

  874. in our

  875. baptism,

  876. it was a

  877. once-off,

  878. I believe

  879. in Jesus,

  880. and as they

  881. shared in

  882. the communion

  883. or in the

  884. Lord's

  885. Supper

  886. together,

  887. they were

  888. saying,

  889. yes,

  890. I continue

  891. on in my

  892. faith in

  893. Christ.

  894. But not

  895. just that,

  896. I continue

  897. on in my

  898. commitment

  899. to the

  900. church

  901. body,

  902. to the

  903. church

  904. family.

  905. So,

  906. we could

  907. put it

  908. this way,

  909. baptism is

  910. a celebration

  911. of a

  912. family birth.

  913. When somebody

  914. is baptized,

  915. it is like

  916. a new

  917. birth.

  918. Someone is

  919. being added

  920. to God's

  921. family because

  922. they've trusted

  923. in Christ.

  924. And the

  925. Lord's

  926. Supper is

  927. like a

  928. family meal.

  929. family.

  930. It's

  931. where the

  932. family gather

  933. together to

  934. renew and

  935. to remind

  936. themselves of

  937. being one

  938. body together,

  939. trusting in

  940. Christ.

  941. Now,

  942. before we move

  943. on,

  944. I'd like us to

  945. think about this

  946. a little bit

  947. more for our

  948. own lives.

  949. You can answer

  950. these for

  951. yourself.

  952. And the

  953. first one is

  954. this,

  955. are you in

  956. the body

  957. of Christ?

  958. Very simply,

  959. are you a

  960. Christian?

  961. are you

  962. trusting in

  963. Jesus?

  964. The invitation

  965. from Ephesians,

  966. you can go back

  967. to Ephesians,

  968. is very clear

  969. that Christ

  970. has done all

  971. the work for

  972. you.

  973. He's died

  974. your death

  975. for you.

  976. He's lived

  977. the perfect

  978. life for you.

  979. So trust

  980. him.

  981. Know his

  982. forgiveness.

  983. Know his

  984. acceptance so

  985. that you can

  986. be part of

  987. the body

  988. of Christ.

  989. Christ.

  990. So are you

  991. a Christian?

  992. Are you in

  993. the body

  994. of Christ?

  995. You need

  996. to answer

  997. that question

  998. today for

  999. yourself.

  1000. If you are

  1001. in the body

  1002. of Christ

  1003. and you say,

  1004. yes,

  1005. I am a

  1006. Christian,

  1007. let me ask

  1008. you,

  1009. have you

  1010. been

  1011. baptized?

  1012. Do you

  1013. take the

  1014. Lord's

  1015. Supper?

  1016. Supper?

  1017. If not,

  1018. why not?

  1019. Or maybe

  1020. you're a

  1021. Christian,

  1022. you say,

  1023. well,

  1024. I've been

  1025. baptized,

  1026. but I

  1027. don't take

  1028. the Lord's

  1029. Supper,

  1030. or,

  1031. yes,

  1032. I'm a

  1033. Christian,

  1034. I take

  1035. the Lord's

  1036. Supper,

  1037. but I'm

  1038. not

  1039. baptized.

  1040. Both are

  1041. commands from

  1042. the Lord

  1043. to make it

  1044. visible and

  1045. clear that,

  1046. yes,

  1047. I believe

  1048. in Christ,

  1049. and yes,

  1050. I belong to

  1051. his church

  1052. family.

  1053. The two go

  1054. together.

  1055. They shouldn't

  1056. be separated.

  1057. So let me

  1058. ask you,

  1059. if you are

  1060. in the

  1061. body of

  1062. Christ,

  1063. have you

  1064. been

  1065. baptized,

  1066. and do

  1067. you share

  1068. in the

  1069. Lord's

  1070. Supper?

  1071. And if

  1072. you don't,

  1073. why not?

  1074. So,

  1075. summary so

  1076. far,

  1077. under

  1078. defining who

  1079. the church

  1080. is.

  1081. The church

  1082. are those

  1083. who are in

  1084. the body

  1085. of Christ

  1086. through faith,

  1087. which is

  1088. expressed in

  1089. baptism

  1090. and the

  1091. Lord's

  1092. Supper.

  1093. Very simple.

  1094. The church,

  1095. the true

  1096. church,

  1097. are those

  1098. who are

  1099. in the

  1100. body of

  1101. Christ

  1102. through

  1103. their faith

  1104. in Christ,

  1105. and that

  1106. faith in

  1107. Christ is

  1108. expressed in

  1109. baptism,

  1110. which is

  1111. once-off,

  1112. and the

  1113. Lord's

  1114. Supper,

  1115. which continues

  1116. until Christ

  1117. comes again.

  1118. So,

  1119. that's

  1120. defining who

  1121. the church

  1122. is.

  1123. Second,

  1124. identifying

  1125. who the

  1126. church is.

  1127. So,

  1128. they're

  1129. parallel,

  1130. they're

  1131. similar,

  1132. but I

  1133. hope as

  1134. we go

  1135. along we'll

  1136. see that

  1137. there's a

  1138. difference.

  1139. We define

  1140. who the

  1141. church is,

  1142. and now we

  1143. want to

  1144. identify who

  1145. the church

  1146. is.

  1147. It's

  1148. important to

  1149. understand that

  1150. we don't

  1151. separate being

  1152. a Christian

  1153. from being

  1154. in the

  1155. church.

  1156. So,

  1157. if you

  1158. are in

  1159. Christ,

  1160. you are

  1161. in the

  1162. church.

  1163. Look at

  1164. the three

  1165. images or

  1166. pictures that

  1167. were given

  1168. in Ephesians

    Ephesians 2 chapter mention

  1169. chapter 2.

  1170. Let's have

  1171. a look at

  1172. verse 15.

  1173. Ephesians

    Ephesians 2:15

  1174. chapter 2

  1175. verse 15.

  1176. The middle

  1177. of verse 15.

  1178. So,

  1179. it's going

  1180. back to

  1181. God's plan

  1182. and God's

  1183. promise.

  1184. Ephesians

    Ephesians 2:15

  1185. 2

  1186. verse 15.

  1187. His

  1188. purpose

  1189. was to

  1190. create in

  1191. himself one

  1192. new humanity

  1193. out of the

  1194. two.

  1195. So,

  1196. from the

  1197. Jews,

  1198. from the

  1199. Gentiles,

  1200. to creating

  1201. himself out

  1202. of all

  1203. these people

  1204. one new

  1205. humanity,

  1206. thus making

  1207. peace.

  1208. And in

  1209. one body,

  1210. so through

  1211. the body

  1212. of Jesus

  1213. Christ,

  1214. to reconcile

  1215. both of

  1216. them to

  1217. God

  1218. through the

  1219. cross,

  1220. by which he

  1221. put to

  1222. death their

  1223. hostility.

  1224. So,

  1225. Christ has

  1226. come through

  1227. his death

  1228. on the

  1229. cross and

  1230. by his

  1231. resurrection

  1232. to bring

  1233. a people

  1234. together for

  1235. himself,

  1236. a new

  1237. community,

  1238. a new

  1239. people under

  1240. him.

  1241. Verse 19.

  1242. consequently,

  1243. so he's

  1244. saying,

  1245. look,

  1246. in light

  1247. of what

  1248. Christ has

  1249. done,

  1250. this is

  1251. who you

  1252. are.

  1253. Because

  1254. Christ has

  1255. died for

  1256. you,

  1257. because he's

  1258. brought you

  1259. together,

  1260. this is

  1261. who you

  1262. are.

  1263. And he

  1264. gives us

  1265. three brilliant

  1266. pictures to

  1267. describe who

  1268. the members

  1269. of the

  1270. body are.

  1271. First,

  1272. he says,

  1273. you are

  1274. citizens with

  1275. God's people.

  1276. Verse 19,

  1277. consequently,

  1278. you are no

  1279. longer foreigners

  1280. and strangers,

  1281. but fellow

  1282. citizens with

  1283. God's people.

  1284. You see,

  1285. when you're

  1286. born in a

  1287. country,

  1288. you become a

  1289. citizen of

  1290. that country.

  1291. It's an

  1292. automatic right.

  1293. You're born in

  1294. Ireland,

  1295. well,

  1296. you're Irish.

  1297. You receive

  1298. all the

  1299. privileges and

  1300. responsibilities

  1301. of being a

  1302. citizen.

  1303. In the same

  1304. way,

  1305. Christ's death

  1306. for us

  1307. makes us

  1308. citizens

  1309. of God's

  1310. nation.

  1311. We become

  1312. citizens with

  1313. the already

  1314. citizens that

  1315. God has

  1316. made.

  1317. We are

  1318. God's people

  1319. together.

  1320. Not only

  1321. citizens with

  1322. God's people,

  1323. another picture

  1324. he gives,

  1325. he says,

  1326. we're like

  1327. children of

  1328. God's family.

  1329. So look at

  1330. the end of

  1331. verse 19.

  1332. We are

  1333. also members

  1334. of his

  1335. household.

  1336. So again,

  1337. when a

  1338. child is

  1339. born into

  1340. a family,

  1341. they get

  1342. to be

  1343. treated as

  1344. part of

  1345. the family.

  1346. They don't

  1347. become a

  1348. brother and

  1349. sister to

  1350. their siblings

  1351. by their

  1352. very birth

  1353. into the

  1354. family.

  1355. They are

  1356. already a

  1357. brother and

  1358. sister with

  1359. their siblings.

  1360. It's

  1361. something the

  1362. child receives

  1363. and enjoys

  1364. at birth.

  1365. Well,

  1366. through our

  1367. faith in

  1368. Christ,

  1369. we become

  1370. children.

  1371. we become

  1372. part of

  1373. his family.

  1374. It's an

  1375. automatic

  1376. privilege.

  1377. And then

  1378. the third

  1379. picture,

  1380. verse 22,

  1381. he describes

  1382. church as

  1383. being a

  1384. dwelling for

  1385. God's

  1386. presence.

  1387. So verse

  1388. 22,

  1389. and in

  1390. him,

  1391. in Christ,

  1392. you too

  1393. are being

  1394. built together

  1395. to become a

  1396. dwelling in

  1397. which God

  1398. lives by

  1399. his spirit.

  1400. So just

  1401. as a

  1402. builder goes

  1403. out and

  1404. he takes

  1405. his blocks

  1406. and he

  1407. puts them

  1408. one on

  1409. top of

  1410. the other

  1411. to build

  1412. a house,

  1413. so Christ

  1414. takes us

  1415. as individuals

  1416. and builds

  1417. us together.

  1418. We're

  1419. incorporated

  1420. together.

  1421. We're a

  1422. living structure

  1423. where God

  1424. dwells by

  1425. his spirit.

  1426. Now,

  1427. these are all

  1428. images and

  1429. pictures of

  1430. the local

  1431. church.

  1432. In each

  1433. picture,

  1434. the individuals

  1435. make up the

  1436. whole.

  1437. Citizens

  1438. make up the

  1439. nation.

  1440. Children

  1441. make up the

  1442. family.

  1443. People like

  1444. stones make

  1445. up the

  1446. building.

  1447. And they're

  1448. also related

  1449. to each

  1450. other.

  1451. There is a

  1452. union, a

  1453. relationship,

  1454. an interdependence.

  1455. You see,

  1456. the Bible never

  1457. ever speaks of

  1458. Christians in

  1459. isolation.

  1460. If you are a

  1461. Christian,

  1462. Christian, you

  1463. don't get to

  1464. decide whether

  1465. or not you

  1466. become part of

  1467. the church.

  1468. It's not

  1469. something you

  1470. think, well,

  1471. I'm a

  1472. Christian, and

  1473. go, I

  1474. wonder if I'll

  1475. become part of

  1476. the church.

  1477. If you are a

  1478. Christian, the

  1479. question is not

  1480. will I become a

  1481. member of the

  1482. church, but how

  1483. am I going to

  1484. live out my

  1485. membership?

  1486. Here's a

  1487. quote, and I

  1488. think it's on

  1489. your page from

  1490. Timison Chester.

  1491. They say, by

  1492. becoming a

  1493. Christian, I

  1494. belong to

  1495. God and I

  1496. belong to my

  1497. brothers and

  1498. sisters.

1499. It is not that I

  1500. belong to God and

  1501. then make a

  1502. decision to join a

  1503. local church.

  1504. My being in

  1505. Christ means being

  1506. in Christ with

  1507. those who are

  1508. in Christ.

  1509. Christ.

  1510. And that's how

  1511. Paul treats these

  1512. believers here, as

  1513. he writes.

  1514. He speaks to the

  1515. church, the body of

  1516. believers.

  1517. He's not writing to

  1518. individuals, but to

  1519. a family, a

  1520. nation, a

  1521. building, people

  1522. who are one.

  1523. So we look to

  1524. that one example in

  1525. chapter 3, verse 6.

  1526. He says, you are

  1527. members together of

  1528. one body.

  1529. Look at chapter 4,

  1530. verse 16.

  1531. From him, from

  1532. Christ, the whole

  1533. body is joined and

  1534. held together by

  1535. every supporting

  1536. ligament and it

  1537. grows and it

  1538. builds itself up in

  1539. love as each part

  1540. does its work.

  1541. Or chapter 4,

  1542. verse 25.

  1543. Therefore, each of

  1544. you must put off

  1545. falsehood and speak

  1546. truthfully to your

  1547. neighbour, for we

  1548. are all members of

  1549. one body.

  1550. You see, we can't

  1551. live in isolation.

  1552. It never, ever

  1553. speaks of a

  1554. Christian being on

  1555. their own, ever.

  1556. So, we are

  1557. members of one

  1558. body.

  1559. Second, identifying

  1560. through membership.

1561. Now, all of this is

  1562. good, what we've

  1563. looked at so far.

1564. It helps us see that

1565. we not only belong to

  1566. Christ, but we

1567. but we also belong to

  1568. the church.

  1569. But how do we

  1570. identify who is in

  1571. the local church?

  1572. We've already

  1573. identified at one

  1574. level or defined it

  1575. as those who believe

  1576. in Christ and trust

  1577. Christ, which has

  1578. been expressed through

  1579. baptism and the

  1580. Lord's Supper.

  1581. But how do we

  1582. identify who is in

  1583. the local church?

1584. How do we know who

  1585. belongs to

  1586. Carigoline Baptist

  1587. Church?

  1588. It would be an

  1589. interesting thing to

  1590. ask, and I'm not

1591. going to ask you to

  1592. do it, but for

  1593. people to put up

  1594. their hands and

  1595. say, do you belong

  1596. to Carigoline Baptist

  1597. Church?

1598. Who of you would put

  1599. up your hand?

1600. I'm not asking you to

  1601. do that, just putting

  1602. it out there.

1603. Is it whoever turns up

  1604. on a given Sunday?

  1605. So what about somebody

1606. who comes just once a

  1607. month or somebody who

  1608. appears twice a year?

  1609. Does that make you

  1610. part of Carigoline

  1611. Baptist Church?

1612. How do you define it?

  1613. How do you identify

  1614. who the people are?

1615. Do we just have to

  1616. kind of have this

  1617. magical kind of,

1618. oh, and we all know

  1619. who it is?

  1620. Well, church

  1621. membership is the

  1622. formal way of

  1623. identifying who

  1624. belongs to a local

  1625. church.

  1626. But you say, ah,

  1627. Johnny, you haven't

  1628. read your Bible very

  1629. well.

  1630. Because membership

  1631. isn't in the Bible,

  1632. is it?

  1633. I've read my Bible,

  1634. I've read through

  1635. Ephesians, and

  1636. membership in this

  1637. formal sense is not

  1638. there.

1639. Well, let me ask you,

  1640. is the word Trinity

  1641. in your Bible?

  1642. Anybody ever come

  1643. across the word

  1644. Trinity?

  1645. It's not there.

  1646. But the teaching of

  1647. Trinity is.

1648. God is one in three

  1649. persons, Father, Son,

  1650. and Holy Spirit.

  1651. It's a word that

  1652. teaches us and tells

  1653. us what and who

  1654. God is.

  1655. Now, the word

  1656. membership in this

  1657. formal way might be

1658. in your Bible, but the

  1659. teaching and the

  1660. practice is.

  1661. It's all over the

  1662. place.

1663. Let me give you one

  1664. example.

  1665. In fact, it's

  1666. assumed in the

  1667. book of Ephesians,

  1668. as we've been

  1669. reading, it's

  1670. addressed to a

  1671. particular people in

  1672. a particular place.

1673. But I want to go and

1674. show you this a little

  1675. bit more.

  1676. Go to Acts chapter

    Acts 20 chapter mention

  1677. 20.

  1678. Acts chapter 20.

    Acts 20 chapter mention

  1679. So if you wanted

  1680. further background on

  1681. Ephesians, you could

  1682. read chapters 19 and

  1683. 20.

1684. So at this point, the

  1685. church has already been

  1686. established.

1687. Paul had visited it a

  1688. number of times.

  1689. And now he's

  1690. traveling back from a

  1691. visit from modern-day

  1692. Greece, and he's kind

  1693. of coming back down

  1694. sort of around the

  1695. Mediterranean, down

  1696. along the coast of

  1697. modern-day Turkey, and

  1698. he's heading towards

  1699. Jerusalem.

1700. And on the way, he

  1701. stops at this little

  1702. place called Miletus,

1703. which is just south of

  1704. Ephesus on the coast.

  1705. So chapter 20, verse

  1706. 16.

  1707. Paul had decided to

  1708. sail past Ephesus to

  1709. avoid spending time in

1710. the province of Asia, for

1711. he was in a hurry to

  1712. reach Jerusalem, if

1713. possible, by the day of

  1714. Pentecost.

  1715. From Miletus, so he

  1716. stopped there for a

  1717. little while, Paul sent

  1718. to Ephesus for the

  1719. elders of the church.

  1720. So it's like a meeting

  1721. he'd arranged.

  1722. He sent a message

  1723. saying, guys, come

  1724. over down to Miletus,

  1725. I want to have a chat

  1726. with you.

1727. And listen to what he

1728. says to the elders of

  1729. the church.

  1730. Verse 28.

  1731. Keep watch over

  1732. yourselves and all the

  1733. flock of which the

  1734. Holy Spirit has made

  1735. you overseers.

  1736. Be shepherds of the

  1737. church of God, which

1738. he bought with his own

  1739. blood.

  1740. I know that after I

  1741. leave, savage wolves

1742. will come in among you

1743. who will not spare the

  1744. flock.

  1745. The savage wolves, of

  1746. course, were false

  1747. teachers.

  1748. Verse 30.

  1749. Even from your own

  1750. number, from your own

  1751. number, men will arise

1752. and distort the truth in

  1753. order to draw away

  1754. disciples after them.

1755. So be on your guard.

  1756. Now, that simple

  1757. reading implies three

1758. things that I want us

  1759. to think through

  1760. carefully.

  1761. First, there is

  1762. clearly an

  1763. identifiable church

  1764. with elders.

  1765. A clearly

  1766. identifiable church

  1767. with elders.

  1768. He sends a message

  1769. for the elders

  1770. in the church at

  1771. Ephesus.

  1772. In other words, it's

  1773. a defined local

  1774. church of believers.

  1775. And even when he

  1776. goes on to warn

  1777. them, he says,

  1778. look, there may be

  1779. people who come

  1780. from within your

  1781. own number.

  1782. A defined group of

  1783. people he's talking

  1784. about again.

  1785. So there were those

  1786. who were definitely

  1787. in the church at

  1788. Ephesus and they

  1789. were able to define

  1790. and know who they

  1791. were and identify

  1792. who they were.

  1793. And there were

  1794. those who were not

  1795. in the church at

  1796. Ephesus.

  1797. So first, there was

  1798. a clearly identifiable

  1799. church with elders.

  1800. Second, the church

  1801. knows who the

  1802. elders are.

  1803. So as we read

  1804. through 28 and 29,

  1805. the elders are given

  1806. the responsibility

  1807. for shepherding,

  1808. for caring,

  1809. for protecting

  1810. the flock.

  1811. the church, yes,

  1812. are God's people.

  1813. He died for them.

  1814. He bought them with

  1815. his own blood.

  1816. Nevertheless, the

  1817. elders are given

  1818. responsibility for

  1819. the church.

1820. The elders are not a

  1821. secret society that

  1822. nobody knows who

  1823. they are.

  1824. The church all knows

  1825. who the elders are.

  1826. They've been affirmed

  1827. and appointed by the

  1828. church and we can

  1829. read that through

  1830. Titus.

1831. So if you have a

  1832. look at Titus

    Titus 1 chapter mention

  1833. chapter 1, that

  1834. when people went,

  1835. they appointed elders

  1836. for every church.

  1837. So practically,

  1838. yes, we have elders

  1839. in this church.

  1840. If you don't know

  1841. who they are,

  1842. they're Alex,

  1843. Jonathan,

  1844. Ralph,

  1845. and myself.

  1846. But how were the

  1847. elders appointed in

  1848. this church?

  1849. Is it whoever

  1850. happens to be here

  1851. on a Sunday gets

  1852. to decide and say,

  1853. yep, we'll have

  1854. them as elder?

  1855. No, the elders are

  1856. appointed and affirmed

  1857. by the members of

  1858. the church.

  1859. It wouldn't be good,

  1860. for example,

  1861. if 20 people,

  1862. let's just say,

  1863. and why not think

  1864. this, like 30 people

  1865. decide to come in

  1866. next Sunday and

  1867. they're here for a

  1868. couple of weeks

  1869. and they decide,

  1870. well, we'll have

  1871. them, they'll be elder.

  1872. And then they leave

  1873. and we never see

  1874. them again.

  1875. I mean, is that

  1876. how it works?

  1877. No, it doesn't.

  1878. The church knows

  1879. who the elders are

  1880. because they have

  1881. been affirmed

  1882. by the church

  1883. themselves.

  1884. And then third,

  1885. the elders know

  1886. who the church are.

  1887. God has made

  1888. the elders shepherds

  1889. over the flock.

  1890. That doesn't mean

  1891. that every single

  1892. Christian in the

  1893. whole region of

  1894. Turkey, Ephesus

  1895. was in Turkey,

  1896. does that mean the

  1897. elders were over

  1898. all the Christians

  1899. in that place?

  1900. No, the flock

  1901. are a defined

  1902. number of people.

  1903. They are shepherds

  1904. of the flock,

  1905. look at verse 28,

  1906. of which the Holy

  1907. Spirit has made you

  1908. overseers.

  1909. There are specific

  1910. people, specific

  1911. sheep that the

  1912. shepherds are to

  1913. look after, to care

  1914. for.

  1915. It's specific.

  1916. So let's ask another

  1917. question.

1918. How do the elders of

  1919. Caragalline Baptist

  1920. Church know who the

  1921. flock are?

  1922. How do I know who I

  1923. am meant to pastor?

  1924. Are they all the

  1925. people who ever

  1926. come in?

  1927. Or people who

  1928. regularly come?

  1929. Or all the

  1930. Christians that there

  1931. might be around

  1932. Caragalline?

  1933. Who's responsible?

  1934. Well, they need to

  1935. be identified.

  1936. And membership is

  1937. the way of doing

  1938. that.

  1939. So membership is

  1940. not just this mad

  1941. idea that we've

  1942. come up with.

  1943. It's a teaching and

  1944. a practice of the

  1945. local church which

1946. is set out in the

  1947. New Testament.

  1948. And we believe that

  1949. membership is best

  1950. and right.

  1951. It's good for the

  1952. church.

  1953. We don't and we

  1954. can't force people

  1955. to become members.

  1956. members.

1957. Yet we see it as

  1958. the best way of

  1959. identifying who the

  1960. church is so they

  1961. are incorporated

  1962. together and, well,

  1963. hold elders

  1964. accountable and the

  1965. elders know who

  1966. they are caring for.

  1967. So if you're here

  1968. this morning and you

  1969. consider this to be

  1970. your local church

1971. and you would put up

  1972. your hand and say,

  1973. yes, Caragalline

  1974. Baptist Church is the

  1975. church that I belong

  1976. to.

  1977. Well, let me

  1978. encourage you.

  1979. Why don't you speak

  1980. to one of the

  1981. elders and let's

  1982. together identify

  1983. who the church is?

  1984. Now, you might want

1985. to come back to me

1986. and talk to me about

  1987. some of these things.

1988. But I want us to

  1989. think through carefully

  1990. what God's word is

  1991. saying.

  1992. So in summary, we've

  1993. defined who the

  1994. church is.

  1995. We've identified the

  1996. church is.

1997. The church is not a

  1998. what but a who.

  1999. They're people.

  2000. People like you and

  2001. me.

  2002. A local gathering of

  2003. God's people which is a

  2004. visible expression or a

  2005. visible demonstration of

  2006. the eternal heavenly

  2007. gathering.

  2008. The church are those

2009. who are in the body

  2010. of Christ.
