  1. Can you still hear me okay? Good stuff. If you'd like to open your Bibles to John chapter 17.

    John 17 chapter mention

  2. John chapter 17.

    John 17 chapter mention

  3. I'll just pray quickly if you don't mind again.

  4. Father, we thank you that we can gather here as your people, open your word.

  5. And we pray, Father, that there will be none among us, Lord, who has a hard heart, a heart that resists you.

  6. But, Lord, that we would be sensitive and tender to what you have to say.

  7. And, Lord, that we would not be those who just hear your word, but that we be those who obey and do your word.

  8. Lest we deceive ourselves, Lord, into thinking that by just hearing it will bless us, Lord, but that we must obey and receive it, Lord, by faith.

  9. I ask for your help and for the blessing of your Holy Spirit, Lord. In Jesus' name. Amen.

  10. Amen.

  11. I'd like to begin this morning by asking you a question.

  12. If you could go back to any one event in the Bible to be there firsthand in the flesh and see something in the Bible, one event, what event would you choose?

  13. Any event in the whole Bible, New Testament, Old Testament, whatever you want it.

  14. This is a question that a friend of mine asked me.

  15. And so he asked me, what would you choose?

  16. Maybe have a think about it.

  17. Would you go see Moses parting the Red Sea and bringing the Israelites out of Egypt?

  18. Or would you see the walls of Jericho come crashing down, maybe?

  19. Or David killing Goliath, walloping him in the head with a stone and then hacking off his head?

  20. Or Jesus preaching the Sermon on the Mount, maybe?

  21. So my friend who asked me this question, I think, actually had the best answer.

  22. He said, of all the events, of all the things that I could go see in the Bible, go back in time and see,

  23. the one thing I would like to see would be Jesus praying.

  24. And some very flashy.

  25. But wouldn't it have been amazing to be there and hear Jesus pray to his Father in heaven?

  26. Well, the text that we have this morning in John chapter 17 is exactly that.

    John 17 chapter mention

  27. It is a candid insight into the prayer life of Jesus Christ himself.

  28. Consider this, of all the things that the disciples could have asked Jesus to teach them,

  29. in the New Testament, we only have record of them asking him to teach them one thing.

  30. Jesus, teach us how to pray.

  31. Not Jesus, teach us how to cast out miracles, teach us how to preach better, teach us how to pray.

  32. I think that's very significant.

  33. Because surely they saw that at the heart of Christ's ministry was his dependence upon God,

  34. borne out in prayer to him constantly.

  35. We read in Hebrews chapter 5 that Jesus offered up prayers and supplications with loud cries and tears

    Hebrews 5 chapter mention

  36. to him who was able to save him from death and he was heard because of his reverence.

  37. If you picture Christ praying in your mind, do you see him crying with tears and shouting out loudly?

  38. Because he was full of passion.

  39. Imagine how incredible it would be to hear that.

  40. And so here, as I said, we have in John chapter 17, not that we can hear with our ears,

    John 17 chapter mention

  41. but that we can read with our eyes the very words of Christ.

  42. This is God incarnate in the flesh, praying to God in heaven.

  43. This is the longest prayer that we have of Jesus,

  44. and it is made even more special and precious to us

  45. because it is the prayer that he prays before he goes to the cross.

  46. Judas says that they're in the upper room, chapters 13 to 17,

  47. is Jesus' final teaching to his disciples.

  48. He's preparing them for his departure,

  49. and he's telling them all about what is going to happen,

  50. and there's much that they don't understand.

  51. Judas, at this point, has left them to betray Jesus.

  52. They've just finished eating their Passover meal,

  53. and this is just before they walk, as it were,

  54. across the valley near the Garden of Gethsemane,

  55. where Christ will then be arrested,

  56. falsely tried, beaten and mocked,

  57. and then executed by crucifixion at Calvary.

  58. All of Jesus' life, all of his earthly ministry,

  59. all of his miracles, all of his work,

  60. has led up to this hour,

  61. and this is what he prays.

  62. So read with me.

  63. We'll read through this chapter together.

  64. You can either listen or follow along.

  65. The whole of John chapter 17.

    John 17 chapter mention

  66. When Jesus had spoken these words,

  67. he lifted up his eyes to heaven and said,

  68. Father, the hour has come.

  69. Glorify your Son, that the Son may glorify you,

  70. since you have given him authority over all flesh

  71. to give eternal life to all whom you have given him.

  72. And this is eternal life,

  73. that they know you, the only true God,

  74. and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.

  75. I glorified you on earth,

  76. having accomplished the work that you gave me to do.

  77. And now, Father, glorify me in your own presence

  78. with the glory that I had with you

  79. before the world existed.

  80. I have manifested your name to the people

  81. whom you gave me out of the world.

  82. Yours they were, and you gave them to me,

  83. and they have kept your word.

  84. Now they know that everything that you have given me

  85. is from you.

  86. For I have given them the words that you gave me,

  87. and they have received them,

  88. and have come to know in truth that I came from you,

  89. and they have believed that you sent me.

  90. I am praying for them.

  91. I am not praying for the world,

  92. but for those whom you have given me,

  93. for they are yours.

  94. All mine are yours,

  95. and yours are mine,

  96. and I am glorified in them.

  97. And I am no longer in the world,

  98. but they are in the world.

  99. And I am coming to you.

  100. Holy Father,

  101. keep them in your name,

  102. which you have given me,

  103. that they may be one,

  104. even as we are one.

  105. While I was with them,

  106. I kept them in your name,

  107. which you have given me.

  108. I have guarded them,

  109. and not one of them has been lost,

  110. except the son of destruction,

  111. that the scripture might be fulfilled.

  112. But now I am coming to you,

  113. and these things I speak in the world,

  114. that they may have my joy fulfilled in themselves.

  115. I have given them your word,

  116. and the world has hated them,

  117. because they are not of the world,

  118. just as I am not of the world.

  119. I do not ask that you take them out of the world,

  120. but that you keep them from the evil one.

  121. They are not of the world,

  122. just as I am not of the world.

  123. Sanctify them in the truth.

  124. Your word is truth.

  125. As you sent me into the world,

  126. so have I sent them into the world.

  127. And for their sake,

  128. I consecrate myself,

  129. that they also may be sanctified in truth.

  130. I do not ask for these only,

  131. but also for those who will believe in me

  132. through their word,

  133. that they may all be one,

  134. just as you, Father, are in me,

  135. and I in you.

  136. That they also may be in us,

  137. so that the world may believe

  138. that you have sent me.

  139. The glory that you have given me,

  140. I have given to them,

  141. that they may be one,

  142. even as we are one.

  143. I in them,

  144. and you in me,

  145. that they may become perfectly one,

  146. so that the world may know

  147. that you have sent me,

  148. and love them,

  149. even as you loved me.

  150. Father, I desire that they also,

  151. whom you have given me,

  152. may be with me where I am,

  153. to see my glory,

  154. that you have given me,

  155. because you loved me,

  156. before the foundation,

  157. of the world.

  158. O righteous Father,

  159. even though the world does not know you,

  160. I know you,

  161. and these know that you have sent me.

  162. I made known to them your name,

  163. and I will continue to make it known,

  164. that the love with which you have loved me,

  165. may be in them,

  166. and I in them.

  167. What a prayer.

  168. I think in all your life,

  169. you'll never read a better prayer than that.

  170. If you imagine for a moment,

  171. that our prayers,

  172. your prayers and my prayers,

  173. are like pouring out water,

  174. the Lord pouring out our hearts to Him,

  175. this is a waterfall of a prayer.

  176. This is the Niagara Falls of prayers.

  177. Just a rush,

  178. a torrent of glory.

  179. Hearing God,

  180. the Son,

  181. pray to God the Father.

  182. I don't know if you've ever been to a,

  183. a kind of a famous city,

  184. or a beautiful city.

  185. I remember being a few years ago in Milan,

  186. with Roxy on holidays,

  187. and I weren't there for like,

  188. a few days,

  189. and there's just so much to take in.

  190. You walk around,

  191. you look at all the nice,

  192. ancient buildings,

  193. that are just so old,

  194. and all the nice places to go visit,

  195. and all the things to do,

  196. and it's just,

  197. you said to yourself,

  198. we've got to come back here,

  199. because there's just so much to take in.

  200. And I would put it to you,

  201. that this prayer is like that.

  202. There's no way we're going to be able to cover everything that's in this prayer.

  203. But I would invite you to go back,

  204. and visit it,

  205. and read through it yourself.

  206. Because it is just absolutely wonderful.

  207. So this morning,

  208. it's not my aim,

  209. as I said,

  210. to unpack this entire chapter,

  211. because there's so much here.

  212. Instead,

  213. it is my aim for us to walk through this prayer,

  214. and see how Jesus prayed right before he went to the cross.

  215. In particular,

  216. I want to look at the petitions.

  217. There are five petitions.

  218. Five things that Jesus asked,

  219. or requested,

  220. of his Father in Heaven,

  221. in this prayer.

  222. And so I want to use that as a framework for us to go through this prayer.

  223. There's more to this prayer,

  224. than just the petitions,

  225. but it's just a way for us to move through it.

  226. So let's start with Jesus' first praise for himself.

  227. Look at verse one.

  228. One petition that he prays for himself.

  229. Father,

  230. the hour has come.

  231. Glorify your Son,

  232. so that the Son may glorify you.

  233. What does the word glorify mean?

  234. We don't really use that anywhere outside of church,

  235. really.

  236. Glorify.

  237. To glorify someone means to lift them up on high.

  238. It means to exalt them,

  239. and honor them.

  240. In the most basic sense,

  241. it means to show how good someone,

  242. or something is.

  243. To glorify someone.

  244. To exalt,

  245. and to honor someone.

  246. Put them in a higher place.

  247. Say,

  248. this is the man.

  249. This person here.

  250. Father,

  251. Jesus prays,

  252. glorify me,

  253. that I may glorify you.

  254. Exalt and honor me,

  255. Father,

  256. so that I may exalt and honor you.

  257. And you'll notice,

  258. just before Jesus asks this,

  259. right at the start of verse 1,

  260. he says what?

  261. The hour has come.

  262. As I said earlier,

  263. Christ's ministry has been building up to this time.

  264. Earlier in the Gospels,

  265. we hear Jesus repeat this phrase,

  266. my hour has not yet come,

  267. my hour has not yet come.

  268. This is the pinnacle of his ministry,

  269. which is going to the cross,

  270. dying for our sins,

  271. rising from the dead,

  272. and ascending to the right hand of the Father.

  273. This hour,

  274. the time for that,

  275. has now come,

  276. and Jesus knows it.

  277. He knows he is about to go

  278. to the cross,

  279. and on top of the physical agony

  280. of being nailed

  281. to wood

  282. and suspended

  283. only by those nails,

  284. he knows that on top of that,

  285. he will suffer the wrath of God,

  286. God's righteous anger

  287. for my sin

  288. and for your sin.

  289. It is not Jesus' physical pain

  290. that wipes away our sins.

  291. It is his blood

  292. shed for us

  293. as a sacrifice

  294. that he absorbed

  295. and swallowed up,

  296. as we said earlier,

  297. God's anger,

  298. righteous,

  299. good anger

  300. against our sins.

  301. Jesus knew that on that cross,

  302. he would be forsaken.

  303. Do you know the only time

  304. Jesus doesn't refer to God

  305. as his Father

  306. is on the cross?

  307. He always refers to him as his Father,

  308. except on the cross.

  309. My God,

  310. my God,

  311. why have you forsaken me?

  312. Jesus did not cease to be God,

  313. but as a man,

  314. Jesus was fully man,

  315. was forsaken

  316. by God.

  317. So how is it then

  318. that Jesus can say,

  319. I am going to go to the cross,

  320. I am going to suffer

  321. physical agony,

  322. I am going to

  323. be the sole target

  324. of the wrath of God.

  325. How can Jesus pray

  326. that he will be glorified

  327. in that?

  328. Sounds funny,

  329. doesn't it?

  330. the worst thing

  331. that could possibly happen.

  332. Being betrayed

  333. by your friend,

  334. being wrongfully accused,

  335. being murdered,

  336. and then God's wrath

  337. being poured out on you

  338. saying glorify me

  339. in this.

  340. The answer

  341. to that

  342. apparent contradiction

  343. is in verse 5.

  344. Father,

  345. glorify me

  346. in your own presence

  347. with the glory

  348. that I had with you

  349. before the world

  350. existed.

  351. Jesus is looking

  352. beyond the cross.

  353. He is looking

  354. beyond

  355. his death.

  356. He is looking

  357. to the resurrection

  358. and not just

  359. to his resurrection

  360. to life

  361. but his ascension

  362. into heaven.

  363. Father,

  364. bring me back

  365. into your presence.

  366. Glorify me

  367. by bringing me

  368. back

  369. to heaven

  370. from where I came.

  371. Glorify me

  372. as it were

  373. into your presence.

  374. This is exactly

  375. what Paul refers to

  376. in Philippians 2

  377. as you might think of

  378. that Jesus

  379. humbled himself

  380. by becoming

  381. obedient

  382. to the point

  383. of death,

  384. even death

  385. on a cross.

  386. Therefore,

  387. God has

  388. highly exalted

  389. him

  390. and bestowed

  391. on him

  392. the name

  393. that is

  394. above every name.

  395. That is why

  396. Jesus could pray

  397. at this time

  398. before it is all

  399. about to go down.

  400. God,

  401. glorify me.

  402. Bring me

  403. through

  404. this fire.

  405. Bring me

  406. through

  407. what I have

  408. to do.

  409. Jesus knows

  410. that the final

  411. destination,

  412. his final destination

  413. is not the cross.

  414. It is not

  415. the grave.

  416. It is heaven

  417. itself.

  418. Hebrews 12

  419. says,

  420. for the joy

  421. set before him,

  422. Jesus endured

  423. the cross

  424. despising its

  425. shame

  426. and is seated

  427. at the right

  428. hand of God

  429. in heaven.

  430. That is where

  431. Jesus is right

  432. now,

  433. at God's

  434. right hand.

  435. Friends,

  436. if God,

  437. the Father,

  438. brought Jesus

  439. through the pain

  440. and the suffering

  441. and the spiritual

  442. agony of the cross

  443. and if he

  444. raised him

  445. from the dead

  446. and brought him

  447. all the way

  448. back to heaven,

  449. how will he not

  450. also care for you

  451. this week?

  452. Is there anything

  453. in your life

  454. that God will not

  455. be able to bring

  456. you through?

  457. Our boast as

  458. Christians is not

  459. in our own strength

  460. as we've sung

  461. this morning.

  462. It's not saying

  463. that we get better

  464. as it were

  465. at being Christians

  466. but that we realize

  467. more and more

  468. our complete

  469. dependence upon

  470. the Lord.

  471. He who did not

  472. spare his own son

  473. but gave him up

  474. for us all,

  475. how will he not

  476. also with him,

  477. with Jesus,

  478. graciously give us

  479. all things.

  480. There is nothing

  481. God will withhold

  482. from you as his child.

  483. Absolutely nothing

  484. if you need it

  485. at the right time.

  486. That is what Jesus

  487. prays,

  488. glorify me

  489. that I may glorify you

  490. and he goes on now

  491. to pray

  492. for his disciples.

  493. So having prayed

  494. for himself,

  495. Jesus now goes on

  496. praying

  497. for his disciples

  498. who were there.

  499. Let's read verses

  500. 6 to 9 again.

  501. He says,

  502. I have manifested

  503. your name

  504. to those whom

  505. you have given me

  506. out of the world.

  507. They were yours,

  508. you gave them to me

  509. and they have kept

  510. your word.

  511. And skip down

  512. to verse 9,

  513. I pray for them,

  514. I do not pray

  515. for the world

  516. but those whom

  517. you have given me

  518. for they are yours.

  519. Jesus is praying

  520. for those people

  521. that the Father

  522. has given to him.

  523. He is not praying

  524. for everyone

  525. in the world,

  526. that is what he says,

  527. but rather

  528. for those

  529. who belong to him.

  530. Now don't let that

  531. get twisted in your mind

  532. if you go,

  533. I wonder do I belong

  534. to God,

  535. I wonder do I belong

  536. to God.

  537. Do you have faith

  538. in the Son of God?

  539. Do you trust in him?

  540. You belong to the Lord.

  541. But the Lord

  542. in his love

  543. made sure

  544. that we would be saved.

  545. By handing us over

  546. to the Son

  547. that he might lay down

  548. his life

  549. for his sheep.

  550. Notice what he says

  551. about his people,

  552. his disciples.

  553. In verse 6,

  554. he says they have what?

  555. They have kept

  556. your word.

  557. And again in verse 8,

  558. I have given them

  559. the words

  560. that you have given me.

  561. Jesus passes on

  562. the message,

  563. the word of God

  564. to his people

  565. and they have

  566. received them.

  567. This is the hallmark

  568. of God's people

  569. that they receive

  570. the word of God.

  571. That they believe it,

  572. accept it.

  573. Jesus criticized

  574. the Pharisees,

  575. he said,

  576. who rejected Jesus,

  577. he said,

  578. my word finds

  579. no place in you.

  580. So that when the word

  581. was preached,

  582. when Jesus was preaching,

  583. they rejected

  584. what he had to say.

  585. Thereby rejecting

  586. Christ himself.

  587. But Jesus says

  588. this is a hallmark,

  589. this is what the people

  590. of God do.

  591. That we receive

  592. the word of God

  593. and we obey it.

  594. It's not just to believe

  595. it or accept it

  596. in some sort of

  597. theoretical sense.

  598. I think there are a lot,

  599. there are a lot of people

  600. in the world

  601. who think that Jesus

  602. is a good teacher

  603. and they agree with him

  604. and they don't mind

  605. being associated with him

  606. in some loose sense

  607. and they're a fan.

  608. There are theologians

  609. who would absolutely

  610. wipe the floor

  611. with any of us

  612. in this room

  613. about the ins and outs

  614. of the Bible,

  615. theology,

  616. what Jesus taught

  617. and yet they don't

  618. believe what he thought.

  619. So to receive

  620. the word of God

  621. means that you

  622. personally take it

  623. and live your life

  624. according to it.

  625. Jesus isn't looking

  626. for fans,

  627. he's looking for disciples.

  628. He doesn't call us

  629. simply to give

  630. a mental assent

  631. and say,

  632. yes, that sounds good,

  633. but rather to say

  634. that is true

  635. and I believe it.

  636. The word of God

  637. and the people of God

  638. are inseparably linked

  639. and Jesus said,

  640. this is who I'm praying for,

  641. those whom you have given me

  642. who have received your word

  643. and he goes on to pray

  644. three things

  645. for his disciples.

  646. As Alex has mentioned earlier,

  647. he prays,

  648. keep them,

  649. Father,

  650. keep my people

  651. in your name,

  652. secondly,

  653. protect them,

  654. thirdly,

  655. sanctify them.

  656. So keep them,

  657. protect them,

  658. sanctify them.

  659. Now,

  660. these petitions

  661. or requests

  662. that he is praying,

  663. he is praying

  664. in the first instance

  665. about the disciples

  666. that are with him,

  667. his disciples at that time.

  668. But as you go on

  669. into verse 20,

  670. he says,

  671. I do not ask for these only,

  672. referring to the disciples

  673. who are with him,

  674. but also for those

  675. who will believe in me

  676. through their word.

  677. That's you and me.

  678. So we don't read this

  679. and kind of go,

  680. oh, this is a prayer

  681. about the disciples

  682. who died long ago

  683. and who were in heaven.

  684. Yes, it is,

  685. but it is also

  686. about you and I.

  687. He said,

  688. I'm not asking

  689. just for them,

  690. I'm asking for all

  691. of those people

  692. who will come.

  693. Isn't that cool?

  694. That Christ prayed

  695. for you

  696. and for me

  697. before he went

  698. to the cross

  699. for us.

  700. Let's look again

  701. at verses 11 and 12.

  702. I am no longer

  703. in the world,

  704. they are in the world,

  705. and I am coming to you.

  706. Holy Father,

  707. keep them in your name,

  708. which you have given me,

  709. that they may be one,

  710. even as we are one.

  711. While I was with them,

  712. I kept them in your name,

  713. which you have given me.

  714. And skip down to verse 15.

  715. I do not ask

  716. that you take them

  717. out of the world,

  718. but that you keep them,

  719. protect them

  720. from the evil one.

  721. They are not of the world,

  722. just as I am not of the world.

  723. Sanctify them

  724. in the truth.

  725. Your word is truth.

  726. So he's praying,

  727. keep them,

  728. protect them,

  729. sanctify them.

  730. When Jesus was

  731. with his disciples,

  732. he protected them.

  733. He guarded them

  734. and he kept them safe.

  735. And clearly the disciples

  736. needed his protection

  737. because of all

  738. the spiritual opposition

  739. from a non-believing world

  740. and from the devil himself

  741. that he would experience.

  742. but he's not just praying

  743. for their protection

  744. from the devil.

  745. He is also praying

  746. that the Father

  747. keeps them

  748. in his name.

  749. Now what does that mean?

  750. What does that mean

  751. to keep them

  752. in his name?

  753. If you really,

  754. if someone was a Christian

  755. and said,

  756. what does it mean

  757. that you believe

  758. in Jesus' name?

  759. Why don't you just

  760. believe in Jesus?

  761. It kind of sounds odd

  762. when you kind of look at it.

  763. The idea is that

  764. we are kept,

  765. Jesus is asking

  766. that we be kept

  767. faithful to who God is.

  768. God's name being

  769. his expression of who he is.

  770. This is my name.

  771. This is who I am.

  772. That we would be kept

  773. faithful to the Father.

  774. Jesus knows

  775. that he is about

  776. to be publicly executed,

  777. that his disciples

  778. will be scattered

  779. like sheep,

  780. as he says,

  781. that they will abandon him,

  782. that they will be scared

  783. and confused.

  784. He knows how weak they are,

  785. just like you and I,

  786. and he prays

  787. that the Father

  788. would protect them.

  789. I mean,

  790. ask yourself,

  791. why didn't,

  792. why didn't the disciples

  793. just give up

  794. on their faith completely

  795. when Jesus died

  796. and go,

  797. well,

  798. he's dead.

  799. That's it.

  800. I feel a fool.

  801. Why did they persevere?

  802. Why is it that

  803. the early church

  804. was not completely

  805. wiped out

  806. by the Roman Empire?

  807. Why did it,

  808. like,

  809. last?

  810. Think of it.

  811. I was trying to

  812. someone there

  813. whose daughter

  814. is studying marketing.

  815. It wasn't marketing

  816. that kept the early church

  817. going.

  818. It was the truth

  819. of God

  820. and God

  821. protecting his people.

  822. you and I

  823. are in this building

  824. this morning

  825. because God

  826. has kept his people

  827. down through the ages.

  828. It wasn't because

  829. the disciples

  830. were smart

  831. or because

  832. they were good

  833. at strategy,

  834. anything but.

  835. it was because

  836. they were led

  837. by the Lord

  838. and protected.

  839. God answered

  840. this prayer

  841. of Jesus

  842. and he keeps

  843. his people

  844. faithful to himself.

  845. He gives us

  846. the strength

  847. each day

  848. to carry on.

  849. it was just

  850. a wonderful

  851. assurance

  852. and comfort

  853. as a Christian

  854. to know

  855. that nothing

  856. in all existence

  857. can separate us

  858. from the love of God

  859. in Christ Jesus.

  860. Nothing.

  861. That God

  862. keeps his people.

  863. If you think

  864. of what Christ said,

  865. my sheep hear

  866. my voice

  867. and I know them

  868. they follow me

  869. I give them

  870. eternal life

  871. and they will

  872. never perish

  873. and no one

  874. will snatch them

  875. out of my hand.

  876. That's Jesus

  877. talking about you

  878. and me.

  879. No one will snatch

  880. them out of my hand.

  881. My Father

  882. who has given them

  883. to me again

  884. is greater than all

  885. and no one is able

  886. to snatch them

  887. out of the Father's hand.

  888. It's almost as if

  889. Christ's hand

  890. and the Father's hand

  891. holding us secure

  892. never letting us go.

  893. So Jesus prays

  894. that the Father

  895. would keep them

  896. and protect them

  897. and then in verse 17

  898. he prays that the Father

  899. would sanctify them.

  900. Sanctify them

  901. in the truth

  902. your word is truth

  903. as you sent me

  904. into the world

  905. so have I sent them

  906. into the world

  907. and for their sake

  908. I consecrate

  909. or sanctify

  910. is another way

  911. of translating that

  912. I sanctify myself

  913. so that they

  914. would be sanctified

  915. in the truth.

  916. Jesus is praying

  917. that we would be

  918. made holy.

  919. That's another word

  920. we should define

  921. regularly

  922. and remind ourselves

  923. what it means.

  924. What does it mean

  925. to be holy?

  926. It means

  927. to be set apart

  928. for God

  929. and his purposes

  930. and to be

  931. like God.

  932. So something is holy

  933. as much as

  934. it is set aside

  935. for God

  936. and reflects

  937. who he is.

  938. that is what

  939. Jesus says

  940. I am about

  941. to set myself

  942. apart

  943. at the cross

  944. for this one

  945. purpose

  946. to do the will

  947. of God

  948. I am going

  949. to do this

  950. so that my people

  951. will be holy

  952. that they will be

  953. saved

  954. and sanctified.

  955. We talk

  956. a lot

  957. thankfully

  958. about Jesus

  959. dying for our sins

  960. Jesus died

  961. so that you

  962. could be

  963. completely

  964. forgiven

  965. of all your sins

  966. and he died

  967. to make you

  968. holy

  969. to make you

  970. like him

  971. because when we

  972. get to heaven

  973. we will be

  974. perfectly

  975. sanctified

  976. and that is

  977. the process

  978. that we are

  979. going through

  980. that Jesus

  981. sanctifies us

  982. and you will

  983. notice the means

  984. by which

  985. he sanctifies us

  986. that he sanctifies

  987. us through

  988. his word

  989. God's word

  990. is his primary

  991. way of making

  992. us holy

  993. he uses other

  994. things like

  995. baptism

  996. and the Lord's

  997. supper

  998. and fellowship

  999. with other

  1000. believers

  1001. and prayer

  1002. and our

  1003. circumstances

  1004. he uses all

  1005. things for the

  1006. good of those

  1007. who belong

  1008. to him

  1009. but God's

  1010. word is how

  1011. he shapes us

  1012. by the renewal

  1013. of our mind

  1014. we can't

  1015. mature as

  1016. Christians

  1017. apart from

  1018. the word

  1019. of God

  1020. do you kind

  1021. of feel

  1022. like lately

  1023. you've just

  1024. kind of been

  1025. you know

  1026. put it into

  1027. neutral

  1028. and kind of

  1029. freewheeling

  1030. in your faith

  1031. and it's

  1032. kind of

  1033. gotten boring

  1034. even

  1035. do you feel

  1036. that

  1037. I've felt

  1038. that

  1039. where you

  1040. feel a bit

  1041. sort of like

  1042. a half boiled

  1043. kettle you know

  1044. there's nothing

  1045. going on

  1046. you're not

  1047. fired up

  1048. are you

  1049. in the

  1050. word

  1051. regularly

  1052. I'm not

  1053. saying like

  1054. you need

  1055. to read

  1056. six chapters

  1057. of the

  1058. bible

  1059. every day

  1060. you need

  1061. to know

  1062. we need

  1063. to know

  1064. who God

  1065. is

  1066. and to be

  1067. reminded

  1068. of who he

  1069. is and

  1070. what he

  1071. has done

  1072. and the

  1073. best way

  1074. to do

  1075. that is

  1076. through his

  1077. word

  1078. that God

  1079. will renew

  1080. us

  1081. and help

  1082. us

  1083. it's like

  1084. that cliche

  1085. you know

  1086. if you call

  1087. tech support

  1088. my laptop

  1089. is not

  1090. working

  1091. the first

  1092. thing they

  1093. always ask

  1094. or my

  1095. computer's

  1096. not working

  1097. is it

  1098. plugged in

  1099. so there's

  1100. no point

  1101. in hyper

  1102. spiritualizing

  1103. or problem

  1104. saying

  1105. I just

  1106. feel strange

  1107. in my

  1108. faith

  1109. or I

  1110. feel really

  1111. distant

  1112. from the

  1113. Lord

  1114. well that's

  1115. maybe because

  1116. the Lord

  1117. hasn't moved

  1118. maybe you

  1119. have

  1120. you know

  1121. it's like

  1122. saying like

  1123. I feel like

  1124. no one can

  1125. hear me on

  1126. the mic

  1127. because you're

  1128. far from

  1129. the mic

  1130. there's nothing

  1131. that mystical

  1132. about it

  1133. I've done

  1134. that where I

  1135. hyper

  1136. spiritualize

  1137. you kind of

  1138. go maybe

  1139. it's just a

  1140. season I'm

  1141. going through

  1142. and the Lord

  1143. is like no

  1144. just read

  1145. my word

  1146. maybe that's

  1147. just me

  1148. but we need

  1149. the word of

  1150. God

  1151. there's just

  1152. no substitute

  1153. for it

  1154. I mean

  1155. you wouldn't

  1156. not eat

  1157. for three

  1158. days would

  1159. you

  1160. I definitely

  1161. wouldn't

  1162. I love

  1163. eating

  1164. but if you

  1165. came into

  1166. church next

  1167. Sunday and

  1168. you were just

  1169. like ashen

  1170. faced and

  1171. just worn

  1172. out and no

  1173. energy

  1174. what's wrong

  1175. with you

  1176. and you go

  1177. I've been

  1178. getting plenty

  1179. sleep

  1180. and then we

  1181. eventually

  1182. discover you're

  1183. just not

  1184. eating

  1185. it's a pretty

  1186. easy fix

  1187. anyway I've

  1188. labored the

  1189. point but

  1190. it cannot

  1191. be emphasized

  1192. too much

  1193. that we

  1194. need the

  1195. word of

  1196. the Lord

  1197. so he

  1198. prays we

  1199. be sanctified

  1200. in the

  1201. truth and

  1202. we have

  1203. the truth

  1204. in the

  1205. Bible

  1206. we read

  1207. then in

  1208. his fifth

  1209. and final

  1210. petition of

  1211. Christ in

  1212. this prayer

  1213. he prays

  1214. that all

  1215. of his

  1216. people would

  1217. be unified

  1218. look at

  1219. verse 20

  1220. I do

  1221. not ask

  1222. for these

  1223. only but

  1224. also for

  1225. those who

  1226. will believe

  1227. in me

  1228. through their

  1229. word that

  1230. they may

  1231. all be

  1232. one

  1233. just as

  1234. father

  1235. you are

  1236. in me

  1237. and I

  1238. in you

  1239. that they

  1240. also may

  1241. be in

  1242. us

  1243. so that

  1244. the world

  1245. may believe

  1246. that you

  1247. have sent

  1248. me

  1249. he says

  1250. I have

  1251. given them

  1252. my glory

  1253. that they

  1254. may be

  1255. one

  1256. even as

  1257. we are

  1258. one

  1259. perfectly

  1260. one

  1261. Jesus

  1262. desires

  1263. that all

  1264. his

  1265. people

  1266. his

  1267. entire

  1268. church

  1269. throughout

  1270. the

  1271. ages

  1272. would

  1273. share

  1274. in the

  1275. very

  1276. unity

  1277. of

  1278. the

  1279. father

  1280. and

  1281. the

  1282. son

  1283. our

  1284. unity

  1285. with

  1286. everybody

  1287. in this

  1288. room

  1289. with other

  1290. believers

  1291. and the

  1292. churches

  1293. across the

  1294. world

  1295. it reflects

  1296. the unity

  1297. within

  1298. the

  1299. triune

  1300. God

  1301. himself

  1302. and

  1303. Jesus

  1304. says

  1305. I am

  1306. praying

  1307. for their

  1308. unity

  1309. so that

  1310. the world

  1311. would look

  1312. at my

  1313. people

  1314. and believe

  1315. that you

  1316. the father

  1317. sent me

  1318. the son

  1319. so that

  1320. non-Christians

  1321. would look

  1322. at us

  1323. and say

  1324. those people

  1325. really love

  1326. each other

  1327. Jesus

  1328. must be

  1329. there's

  1330. something

  1331. there's

  1332. something

  1333. legit

  1334. about that

  1335. Jesus

  1336. is the

  1337. real deal

  1338. because

  1339. those people

  1340. seem to

  1341. have nothing

  1342. in common

  1343. except

  1344. Jesus

  1345. and they

  1346. love each

  1347. other

  1348. in a way

  1349. that is

  1350. unique

  1351. Jesus

  1352. says

  1353. by your

  1354. love

  1355. for one

  1356. another

  1357. they

  1358. shall

  1359. know

  1360. that

  1361. you

  1362. are

  1363. mine

  1364. I

  1365. certainly

  1366. underestimate

  1367. that

  1368. you

  1369. think

  1370. there'd

  1371. be

  1372. something

  1373. fancier

  1374. like

  1375. the

  1376. preaching

  1377. of the

  1378. word

  1379. of

  1380. God

  1381. which

  1382. is

  1383. absolutely

  1384. essential

  1385. or

  1386. something

  1387. else

  1388. but

  1389. Jesus

  1390. says

  1391. no

  1392. it's

  1393. your

  1394. love

  1395. for

  1396. your

  1397. brothers

  1398. and

  1399. sisters

  1400. I have

  1401. a friend

  1402. Clodagh

  1403. and before

  1404. she was

  1405. a Christian

  1406. she was

  1407. on

  1408. McCurtain

  1409. Street

  1410. and she

  1411. was going

  1412. to a gig

  1413. or something

  1414. and she

  1415. said she

  1416. remembers

  1417. looking across

  1418. the street

  1419. of people

  1420. coming out of

  1421. Corp Baptist

  1422. Church

  1423. and she

  1424. looked across

  1425. the road

  1426. and she

  1427. was with

  1428. a lot of

  1429. her friends

  1430. having a good

  1431. time

  1432. and she

  1433. looked across

  1434. the road

  1435. and she

  1436. looked at

  1437. them and she

  1438. said I

  1439. could just

  1440. see there

  1441. was something

  1442. different about

  1443. them

  1444. they

  1445. they

  1446. they

  1447. they

  1448. just

  1449. looked so

  1450. happy

  1451. to be

  1452. together

  1453. and she

  1454. said that

  1455. that was

  1456. a starting

  1457. point for

  1458. her

  1459. in seeking

  1460. out

  1461. Christian

  1462. fellowship

  1463. so we

  1464. should not

  1465. underestimate

  1466. how much

  1467. our love

  1468. for one

  1469. another

  1470. is a

  1471. witness

  1472. to those

  1473. who come

  1474. in and

  1475. see

  1476. the fact

  1477. that God's

  1478. people today

  1479. you and

  1480. me

  1481. grow in

  1482. maturity

  1483. and that

  1484. we love

  1485. one another

  1486. is the

  1487. fact

  1488. is proof

  1489. that the

  1490. Lord is

  1491. answering

  1492. his

  1493. prayer

  1494. and it's

  1495. not an

  1496. artificial

  1497. unity

  1498. it's a

  1499. unity around

  1500. the truth

  1501. of who

  1502. Jesus is

  1503. a unity

  1504. in his

  1505. word

  1506. that we

  1507. must seek

  1508. to actively

  1509. live out

  1510. and exemplify

  1511. for the

  1512. world around

  1513. us

  1514. Colossians

  1515. 3 says

  1516. this

  1517. as a

  1518. picture of

  1519. this unity

  1520. bear with

  1521. one another

  1522. and forgive

  1523. one another

  1524. if any of

  1525. you have

  1526. any grievance

  1527. against

  1528. someone

  1529. forgive

  1530. as the

  1531. Lord

  1532. forgave

  1533. you

  1534. and over

  1535. all these

  1536. virtues

  1537. put on

  1538. love

  1539. which binds

  1540. them together

  1541. in perfect

  1542. unity

  1543. I'll finish

  1544. by reading

  1545. from

  1546. Philippians

    Philippians 2 chapter mention

  1547. chapter 2

  1548. just to

  1549. fix our

  1550. eyes

  1551. on Christ

  1552. before we

  1553. draw to

  1554. a close

  1555. Philippians

    Philippians 2:2–11

  1556. chapter 2

  1557. verses 2

  1558. to 11

  1559. Paul says

  1560. this

  1561. complete

  1562. my joy

  1563. by being

  1564. of the

  1565. same

  1566. mind

  1567. having

  1568. the same

  1569. love

  1570. being in

  1571. full accord

  1572. and of

  1573. one mind

  1574. do nothing

  1575. from selfish

  1576. ambition

  1577. or vain

  1578. conceit

  1579. but in

  1580. humility

  1581. count others

  1582. as more

  1583. significant

  1584. than yourselves

  1585. let each

  1586. of you

  1587. look not

  1588. only to

  1589. your own

  1590. interests

  1591. but to

  1592. the interests

  1593. of others

  1594. having this

  1595. mind among

  1596. yourselves

  1597. which is

  1598. yours

  1599. in Christ

  1600. Jesus

  1601. who

  1602. though he

  1603. was in

  1604. the form

  1605. of God

  1606. did not

  1607. count

  1608. equality

  1609. with God

  1610. a thing

  1611. to be

  1612. grasped

  1613. but

  1614. emptied

  1615. himself

  1616. by taking

  1617. the form

  1618. of a

  1619. servant

  1620. being born

  1621. in the

  1622. likeness

  1623. of man

  1624. and being

  1625. found

  1626. in human

  1627. form

  1628. he humbled

  1629. himself

  1630. by becoming

  1631. obedient

  1632. to the point

  1633. of death

  1634. even death

  1635. on a cross

  1636. therefore

  1637. God has

  1638. exalted

  1639. him

  1640. highly

  1641. and bestowed

  1642. on him

  1643. the name

  1644. that is above

  1645. every name

  1646. so that at

  1647. the name

  1648. of Jesus

  1649. every knee

  1650. should bow

  1651. in heaven

  1652. and on earth

  1653. and under

  1654. the earth

  1655. and every tongue

  1656. confess

  1657. that Christ

  1658. Jesus

  1659. is Lord

  1660. to the

  1661. glory

  1662. of God

  1663. the Father

  1664. and all

  1665. God's people

  1666. said

  1667. Amen

  1668. thank you

  1669. Kevin

  1670. we're going to

  1671. stand together

  1672. and sing in

  1673. response to

  1674. that

  1675. go

  1676. to the

  1677. man

  1678. das

  1679. los

  1680. to do

  1681. and

  1682. to what

  1683. do

  1684. the

  1685. the

  1686. God

  1687. the

  1688. he

  1689. and

  1690. oh

  1691. to
