  1. Two of a short series just on healthy members or healthy membership.

  2. Trevor's handing around two sheets.

  3. The reason for that is it's just some more notes to follow up.

  4. I think there might be some questions or to dig a bit deeper.

  5. I guess it's an element of a study as much as a sermon in some ways.

  6. There's two pages.

  7. If you weren't here a couple of weeks ago or you didn't get notes,

  8. there are some copies of the notes from the first week,

  9. so please feel free to pick those up on the way out there on the table.

  10. Just to explain, the first sheet is essentially the outline of the sermon.

  11. The second one then is some passages from the New Testament that talk about one another.

  12. So it's just to take away for your encouragement and help as you think

  13. about what it means to be a healthy member of the church.

  14. So question to start.

  15. Is this the church this morning?

  16. Is this the church this morning?

  17. Did you come to church?

  18. Or are you church?

  19. Have we reached a quota for the minimum number of people,

  20. the minimum number of Christians,

  21. in one place to be able to say that we're officially a church?

  22. In some ways, church could simply be a few people who love Jesus.

  23. Just take the words of Jesus in Matthew 18,

  24. on their own, which many do,

  25. and then church is simply whenever two or three people

  26. are gathered together in Jesus' name.

  27. The author George Barna in his book Revolution puts it like this,

  28. Christians have in principle claimed that nothing more,

  29. nothing more is required to constitute a church

  30. than a couple of believers on a park bench.

  31. Yet the vines of bureaucracy and hierarchy

  32. have snaked their way around God's people for centuries,

  33. often choking out innovation and progress.

  34. I don't know what you make of that quote or that idea,

  35. but for George Barna,

  36. church is what two or more believing friends do

  37. when they talk about Jesus

  38. over coffee at Bean and Leaf or at Starbucks.

  39. And church needs to be freed from the stuffy

  40. and institutional formal structures.

  41. And yet I think our hearts are complex

  42. and they often mask our true needs.

  43. What might be appealing or maybe right-sounding

  44. to our ears initially may not be all that we actually need.

  45. Searching for church without structure

  46. or searching for church without commitment

  47. might not lead us to all that we expect.

  48. So as we look again this week

  49. at healthy church members this morning,

  50. I want us to see,

  51. to really think about the deep riches

  52. of all that God has provided to us

  53. together as members of his body.

  54. God tells us in his word

  55. what the community that he created

  56. should act and look like.

  57. And our deep, heartfelt need

  58. for authentic Christianity,

  59. and that's a good desire,

  60. that's a good need to have,

  61. our heartfelt need for authentic Christianity

  62. or authentic church.

  63. I want you to know that that is matched.

  64. It is matched and more

  65. by God's provision to us of his church.

  66. George Barna,

  67. who we quoted earlier,

  68. is correct in saying that

  69. the church is really not a what,

  70. but a who.

  71. Three weeks ago,

  72. Johnny helped us to think deeply about church

  73. in terms of both

  74. who is in the church

  75. and how we identify

  76. who the members are.

  77. So who the church is

  78. and how do we identify the church.

  79. And so we can say

  80. that the church is all Christians,

  81. all Christians in heaven

  82. and on earth,

  83. one body with Jesus Christ

  84. as our head.

  85. But if we stop there,

  86. if we stop there,

  87. we end up with an idea of church

  88. or a definition of church

  89. as simply the plural of Christian.

  90. What do I mean by that?

  91. I mean,

  92. it's just,

  93. church is another way of saying

  94. two Christians

  95. or three Christians

  96. or ten Christians

  97. and that's all it is.

  98. It's just a plural word for Christians.

  99. But we know there's more there,

  100. don't we?

  101. Recall some of what was preached

  102. a few weeks ago.

  103. We are members of one body,

  104. marked out in gathered communities

  105. by our baptism,

  106. by our partaking,

  107. which we will do today,

  108. of the Lord's table.

  109. Both of which,

  110. baptism and the Lord's table,

  111. are things the church should do

  112. and they're commanded by the Lord.

  113. So it's not just sufficient to say

  114. church is just Christians.

  115. There are certain things

  116. associated with church.

  117. On membership,

  118. Johnny showed us

  119. that church membership is,

  120. it's nowhere explicitly taught

  121. in the Bible,

  122. but it is everywhere,

  123. assumed,

  124. everywhere you go through

  125. the New Testament,

  126. membership of a local church

  127. is assumed.

  128. We saw that in Acts 20.

  129. The Christians in Ephesus

  130. could be identified

  131. as a local church

  132. with elders

  133. and the church

  134. or the members

  135. knew who the elders were

  136. and the elders knew

  137. who was in the church,

  138. knew who the members were.

  139. Each in turn knew

  140. and the church knew

  141. and the church formed

  142. in that local place

  143. in Ephesus.

  144. So last time,

  145. our focus was about

  146. who the church members,

  147. the who of the church members

  148. and this morning,

  149. we want to look at the what,

  150. the what.

  151. What does membership

  152. of a local church

  153. look like

  154. in practice?

  155. We're going to turn again

  156. back to the book

  157. of Ephesians,

  158. Ephesians chapter 4.

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  159. Ephesians chapter 4

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  160. and we're going to move

  161. through a few verses

  162. this morning,

  163. different parts of the scriptures,

  164. but let's look at Ephesians chapter 4

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  165. and verse 1.

  166. You see,

  167. the church in the New Testament

  168. was not just

  169. the few Christians

  170. meeting up during the week

  171. for a spiritual conversation

  172. at the marketplace

  173. or a couple of buddies

  174. getting together

  175. to go to the Colosseum

  176. to watch some sport

  177. and have a chat about Jesus

  178. in the middle.

  179. No,

  180. believers were bound together

  181. as members

  182. of an identifiable

  183. local church

  184. in a covenantal love

  185. towards one another.

  186. Ephesians 1 and 2.

  187. Paul writing to the church

  188. in Ephesus,

  189. as a prisoner for the Lord

  190. then I urge you,

  191. urge you to live a life

  192. worthy of the calling

  193. you have received.

  194. Be completely humble

  195. and gentle.

  196. Be patient,

  197. bearing with one another

  198. in love.

  199. live a life

  200. worthy of the calling

  201. you have received.

  202. The calling that you

  203. have received

  204. to be a follower of Jesus,

  205. to be a Christian.

  206. And what is the calling

  207. that Paul writes of?

  208. What is he saying here?

  209. Well,

  210. I think it's simply this.

  211. God

  212. has called you

  213. to love

  214. your spiritual family.

  215. love

  216. your

  217. family.

  218. John

  219. 13,

  220. the words of Jesus.

  221. Jesus speaking.

  222. A new command

  223. I give you,

  224. love

  225. one another.

  226. As I have loved you,

  227. so you must

  228. love

  229. one another.

  230. God

  231. is our

  232. Father.

  233. Jesus

  234. is our

  235. elder brother.

  236. Therefore,

  237. we are all,

  238. because we are

  239. united to

  240. Jesus Christ

  241. by faith,

  242. we are all

  243. brothers

  244. and sisters

  245. in

  246. Christ.

  247. We are

  248. family.

  249. Love

  250. your

  251. family.

  252. To illustrate

  253. this,

  254. let me read

  255. these words again

  256. as if I was urging

  257. my own family.

  258. my wife and

  259. children,

  260. as to how we

  261. should live

  262. together.

  263. So you can just

  264. picture

  265. Cherry and the

  266. kids there.

  267. Maybe we are

  268. around the

  269. dinner table.

  270. I urge us

  271. to live

  272. a life

  273. worthy of

  274. the calling

  275. we have

  276. received as

  277. members of

  278. this family

  279. around this

  280. table.

  281. Be

  282. completely

  283. humble

  284. and gentle.

  285. Be

  286. patient.

  287. We need to

  288. bear with

  289. one another

  290. in love.

  291. As a

  292. parent,

  293. or as a

  294. child,

  295. or as a

  296. brother,

  297. or as a

  298. sister,

  299. can you see

  300. that these

  301. words that we

  302. have in front

  303. of us,

  304. verse 2,

  305. speak of

  306. family life?

  307. You see,

  308. those are the

  309. kind of words

  310. that I need

  311. to embrace

  312. as a father

  313. when my son

  314. or daughter

  315. is huffing

  316. and puffing

  317. and refusing

  318. to engage

  319. when they're

  320. saying,

  321. everything's

  322. fine,

  323. when I

  324. know they're

  325. bottling up

  326. some hurt

  327. or some

  328. slight.

  329. I need to

  330. be patient

  331. and humble

  332. and kind.

  333. And these

  334. are the

  335. words,

  336. and these

  337. are the

  338. kind of

  339. words of

  340. instruction

  341. encouragement

  342. I need

  343. so that I

  344. can put

  345. the needs

  346. of my

  347. wife

  348. above my

  349. own

  350. when we're

  351. both wrecked

  352. and one of

  353. us has to

  354. do this

  355. bit of

  356. work so

  357. that the

  358. other can

  359. rest.

  360. These are

  361. the words.

  362. These are

  363. words that are

  364. intended to

  365. govern and

  366. to shape

  367. and to

  368. help a

  369. family,

  370. family life,

  371. spiritual

  372. family life.

  373. Jesus says,

  374. love one

  375. another.

  376. Love your

  377. spiritual

  378. family.

  379. You see,

  380. I've bought

  381. them at such

  382. a great

  383. cost,

  384. the cost

  385. of my own

  386. life,

  387. and I've

  388. given my

  389. life to

  390. them so

  391. that they

  392. could be

  393. your

  394. brothers

  395. and be

  396. your

  397. sisters.

  398. They can

  399. be your

  400. spiritual

  401. father or

  402. your

  403. spiritual

  404. mother,

  405. the

  406. spiritual

  407. offspring in

  408. your care

  409. because I

  410. love them

  411. and I

  412. want you

  413. to love

  414. them.

  415. Love

  416. them.

  417. Uphold

  418. them.

  419. Be

  420. patient.

  421. Bear with

  422. their

  423. failings.

  424. Members

  425. then,

  426. they uphold

  427. one

  428. another in

  429. this

  430. holy

  431. brotherly

  432. love.

  433. There's a

  434. great phrase

  435. I want us

  436. to see

  437. just at the

  438. end of

  439. verse 2

  440. and we

  441. need to

  442. note it

  443. so carefully

  444. and look

  445. for it

  446. in our

  447. Bibles.

  448. You see

  449. that phrase

  450. verse 2

  451. the end

  452. one

  453. another

  454. one

  455. another

  456. each

  457. and every

  458. time we

  459. see those

  460. words

  461. in the

  462. scriptures

  463. we should

  464. automatically

  465. think of

  466. our

  467. brothers

  468. and

  469. sisters

  470. in

  471. Christ.

  472. So who

  473. are my

  474. brothers and

  475. sisters in

  476. Christ?

  477. I am to

  478. love like

  479. this.

  480. What's in

  481. view here?

  482. Well yes,

  483. we can say

  484. all Christians

  485. regardless of

  486. their church

  487. affiliation

  488. are to be

  489. considered.

  490. That's

  491. absolutely

  492. true.

  493. Johnny on

  494. his travels

  495. to Ghana

  496. and Johnny

  497. must love

  498. his brothers

  499. and sisters

  500. that he

  501. meets when

  502. he's in

  503. Ghana.

  504. As he has

  505. opportunity

  506. he must

  507. do good

  508. to them.

  509. But I

  510. believe that

  511. there is a

  512. special bond

  513. for those

  514. that Christ

  515. has brought

  516. us close

  517. together

  518. in a

  519. local

  520. church.

  521. Those

  522. within the

  523. local

  524. fellowship

  525. for which

  526. there is

  527. this

  528. special

  529. ongoing

  530. covenantal

  531. bond.

  532. You see

  533. we can

  534. multiply

  535. examples

  536. of this

  537. one another

  538. language

  539. from the

  540. other

  541. New

  542. Testament

  543. letters.

  544. And I'm

  545. going to

  546. take one

  547. of those

  548. sheets

  549. from

  550. some

  551. because

  552. I forgot

  553. to give

  554. one to

  555. myself.

  556. But let's

  557. just read

  558. the ones

  559. from Romans

  560. if you want

  561. to turn to

  562. the sheet

  563. or just

  564. listen.

  565. Listen to

  566. the language

  567. and think

  568. of your

  569. brothers and

  570. sisters

  571. in Christ.

  572. Romans

  573. 12

  574. 10

  575. Be

  576. devoted

  577. to one

  578. another in

  579. love.

  580. Honor

  581. one

  582. another

  583. above

  584. yourselves.

  585. Live

  586. in harmony

  587. with one

  588. another.

  589. Do not

  590. be proud

  591. but be

  592. willing to

  593. associate

  594. with people

  595. of low

  596. position.

  597. Do not

  598. be conceited.

  599. It's a

  600. great one.

  601. let no

  602. death

  603. remain

  604. outstanding

  605. except

  606. the

  607. continuing

  608. death

  609. to love

  610. one

  611. another.

  612. Whoever

  613. loves

  614. others

  615. has

  616. fulfilled

  617. the

  618. law.

  619. Therefore,

  620. let us

  621. stop

  622. passing

  623. judgment

  624. on one

  625. another.

  626. Instead,

  627. make up

  628. your mind

  629. not to

  630. put any

  631. stumbling

  632. block or

  633. obstacle in

  634. the way

  635. of a

  636. brother

  637. or sister.

  638. Accept

  639. one

  640. another

  641. then,

  642. just as

  643. Christ

  644. accepted

  645. you in

  646. order to

  647. bring praise

  648. to God.

  649. I myself

  650. am convinced,

  651. my brothers and

  652. sisters,

  653. that you

  654. yourselves are

  655. full of

  656. goodness,

  657. filled with

  658. knowledge,

  659. and competent

  660. to instruct

  661. one

  662. another.

  663. Greet

  664. one

  665. another

  666. with a

  667. holy

  668. kiss.

  669. All

  670. the

  671. churches

  672. of

  673. Christ

  674. send

  675. greetings.

  676. You

  677. see,

  678. we make

  679. the most

  680. sense of

  681. the New

  682. Testament

  683. writings on

  684. loving

  685. one another

  686. when we

  687. consider

  688. local

  689. church

  690. membership.

  691. It's

  692. in that

  693. ongoing,

  694. covenantal,

  695. long-term

  696. love and

  697. commitment

  698. that's

  699. marked by

  700. humbly

  701. upholding

  702. one another

  703. as

  704. brothers

  705. and

  706. sisters

  707. in

  708. holiness.

  709. Jesus

  710. says,

  711. love

  712. one

  713. another.

  714. And the

  715. Bible's

  716. realistic about

  717. the struggle

  718. and difficulty

  719. that it is

  720. to love

  721. in a

  722. sinful

  723. world

  724. where our

  725. brothers and

  726. sisters are

  727. not perfect,

  728. yet

  729. healthy

  730. church members

  731. still covenant

  732. together in

  733. the midst

  734. of sin.

  735. They share

  736. their food

  737. and their

  738. homes.

  739. They look

  740. after the

  741. sick,

  742. look after

  743. the elderly.

  744. Brothers and

  745. sisters greet

  746. one another

  747. warmly.

  748. They're patient

  749. when they're

  750. offended.

  751. They're long

  752. suffering in

  753. their grievances.

  754. They accept

  755. one another.

  756. They don't

  757. give up

  758. easily.

  759. They rebuke

  760. and they

  761. correct one

  762. another in

  763. love so

  764. that Satan

  765. will have no

  766. opportunity to

  767. sow discord.

  768. They forgive

  769. one another.

  770. This is

  771. church.

  772. So members

  773. live out their

  774. lives as a

  775. community of

  776. love together,

  777. but that

  778. community must

  779. gather together

  780. as a local

  781. church body.

  782. And the word

  783. church has that

  784. idea of

  785. gathering or

  786. assembly built

  787. into it.

  788. I don't know

  789. if you know,

  790. but I'm not

  791. an expert on

  792. Greek, but

  793. the Greek

  794. word literally

  795. means just

  796. that, a

  797. gathering.

  798. The word

  799. church is

  800. built into

  801. it, the

  802. idea of

  803. gathering.

  804. And that

  805. idea of

  806. gathering has,

  807. for God's

  808. people, has

  809. its origins way

  810. back in the

  811. nation of

  812. Israel, Mount

  813. Sinai, when

  814. God said to

  815. Moses to

  816. gather the

  817. people before

  818. him or

  819. assemble the

  820. people before

  821. him, God's

  822. people,

  823. before God.

  824. And Jesus,

  825. when he talked

  826. about the

  827. church, he

  828. said, I

  829. will build

  830. my church

  831. or I

  832. will build

  833. my gathering.

  834. The

  835. church is

  836. not just

  837. about, it's

  838. no less than

  839. this, but it's

  840. not just

  841. about individual

  842. faith in

  843. Christ.

  844. It's not

  845. just about

  846. individual

  847. Christians.

  848. It is

  849. seen in

  850. the gathering

  851. and

  852. assembling

  853. of saved

  854. people as

  855. a local

  856. church.

  857. And we

  858. sometimes speak

  859. about that,

  860. like, don't

  861. we, on a

  862. Sunday, we

  863. talk about

  864. our Sunday

  865. morning time

  866. as the

  867. gathering, or

  868. a gathering,

  869. and that's

  870. very purposeful.

  871. We assemble

  872. on Sunday,

  873. the Lord's

  874. Day, as

  875. his gathered

  876. people, his

  877. church, his

  878. assembly.

  879. healthy.

  880. So healthy

  881. members will

  882. come together

  883. to practice

  884. the spiritual

  885. disciplines and

  886. graces that

  887. God has given

  888. to us as a

  889. gathered people.

  890. There's many

  891. spiritual disciplines

  892. we practice

  893. ourselves as

  894. believers, yet

  895. there are many

  896. that we can

  897. only do as a

  898. gathered people,

  899. as a church.

  900. Let's look at

  901. Ephesians chapter

  902. five and

  903. verse 15

  904. for some

  905. ideas of

  906. what it

  907. looks like

  908. and what

  909. these

  910. spiritual

  911. practices

  912. are.

  913. Ephesians

  914. five and

  915. verse 15,

  916. be very

  917. careful then

  918. how you

  919. live, not

  920. as wise,

  921. unwise, but

  922. as wise,

  923. making the

  924. most of

  925. every

  926. opportunity

  927. because the

  928. days are

  929. evil.

  930. Therefore

  931. do not

  932. be foolish,

  933. but instead

  934. understand what

  935. the Lord's

  936. will is.

  937. Do not

  938. get drunk

  939. on wine,

  940. which leads

  941. to debauchery.

  942. Instead

  943. be filled

  944. with the

  945. Spirit,

  946. speaking to

  947. one another

  948. with psalms,

  949. hymns, and

  950. songs from

  951. the Spirit.

  952. Sing and

  953. make music

  954. from your

  955. heart to

  956. the Lord,

  957. always giving

  958. thanks to

  959. God the

  960. Father for

  961. everything in

  962. the name of

  963. our Lord

  964. Jesus Christ.

  965. Submit to

  966. one another

  967. out of

  968. reverence.

  969. You see,

  970. Paul is

  971. encouraging the

  972. church to

  973. be filled

  974. with the

  975. Spirit and

  976. to speak

  977. to one

  978. another through

  979. songs and

  980. music.

  981. We read

  982. earlier from

  983. Hebrews and

  984. the writer of

  985. Hebrews instructed

  986. the believers to

  987. not forsake meeting

  988. together, but

  989. instead to spur

  990. one another on to

  991. good works.

  992. If we look in the

  993. book of Acts, we

  994. read about the

  995. early believers, the

  996. first believers in

  997. Jerusalem, and they

  998. gathered together.

  999. They devoted

  1000. themselves, it

  1001. says, to the

  1002. apostles' teaching,

  1003. to the breaking of

  1004. bread, to

  1005. prayer.

  1006. Remember the

  1007. church in

  1008. Antioch.

  1009. They gathered

  1010. together and

  1011. they prayed

  1012. together and

  1013. they set

  1014. apart Paul and

  1015. Barnabas for

  1016. missions work.

  1017. So New

  1018. Testament churches

  1019. gathered together.

  1020. They gathered for

  1021. many reasons.

  1022. When needed, they

  1023. gathered to pass

  1024. judgment and

  1025. discipline on

  1026. those who had

  1027. brought disrepute to

  1028. the church body.

  1029. Paul provides, I

  1030. think this is a

  1031. good example again

  1032. of instruction to

  1033. the church in

  1034. Corinth on how

  1035. they should conduct

  1036. themselves.

  1037. So let's turn

  1038. briefly to 1

    1 Corinthians 14 chapter mention

  1039. Corinthians chapter

  1040. 14.

  1041. And again, the

  1042. nature of looking

  1043. at this topic, we

1044. need to look at a

  1045. few different

  1046. passages because

  1047. again, it's not

  1048. taught just in one

  1049. place, but it's

  1050. woven into the

  1051. fabric of the New

  1052. Testament, this idea

  1053. of membership and

  1054. gathering.

  1055. 1 Corinthians 14

    1 Corinthians 14:26–33

  1056. verse 26 to

  1057. 33.

  1058. I'm not going to

  1059. read the whole

  1060. section, but just

  1061. note verse 26 and

  1062. verse 33.

  1063. What then shall we

  1064. say, brothers and

  1065. sisters, when you

  1066. come together, each

1067. of you has a hymn or

  1068. a word of instruction,

  1069. a revelation, a

  1070. tongue or an

  1071. interpretation.

  1072. Everything must be

  1073. done so that the

  1074. church may be built

  1075. up.

  1076. Down to verse

  1077. 33.

1078. For God is not a

  1079. God of disorder, but

1080. of peace, as in all

  1081. the congregations or

  1082. gatherings of the

  1083. Lord's people.

  1084. Being a healthy

  1085. member of the body

  1086. of Christ involves

  1087. this regular pattern

  1088. of gathering together

  1089. as a church.

  1090. You see, our

  1091. spiritual, our

  1092. personal spiritual

  1093. disciplines and

  1094. preferences don't

  1095. trump the spiritual

  1096. disciplines and

  1097. graces that the

  1098. Lord has given to

  1099. us through his

  1100. church.

1101. They're not to be in

  1102. conflict.

  1103. They should

  1104. complement.

  1105. Christ loves his

  1106. church and calls his

  1107. church to gather in

  1108. local communities,

  1109. local outcroppings of

  1110. the true heavenly

  1111. gathering.

  1112. church.

  1113. I don't know what

  1114. everyone's attitude is

  1115. to church or

  1116. gathering on a

  1117. Sunday.

  1118. In many ways, I'm

  1119. speaking to those

  1120. that are here who

  1121. show their desire to

  1122. gather.

1123. But yes, I think at

  1124. different times, we

  1125. need to make a

  1126. conscious decision,

  1127. don't we, about being

  1128. committed to the

  1129. gathering.

1130. To some of those who

1131. are in first year of

  1132. secondary school, they

  1133. finish Sunday school,

  1134. and they're with us

  1135. now in the service

  1136. and they've gained

  1137. more freedom.

  1138. And you know, I

  1139. know it's hard at

  1140. that age, or maybe

  1141. any age, but

  1142. particularly at that

  1143. age, there's things

  1144. happening on a

  1145. Sunday.

  1146. There's birthday

  1147. parties, there's a

  1148. Saturday night away,

  1149. there's the match at

  1150. 12pm that's hard to

  1151. resist.

  1152. And so, young

  1153. people, as we think

  1154. about church and

  1155. gathering, we have

  1156. to resolve to honour

  1157. Christ and his

  1158. family above those

  1159. other good things.

  1160. And the strength to

  1161. do that isn't found

  1162. by looking inwards,

  1163. particularly, or by

  1164. being guilted by

  1165. your parents or

  1166. maybe by your

  1167. pastor or elder.

  1168. It's not going to

  1169. cut it, ultimately.

  1170. The strength to

  1171. gather regularly is

  1172. found in the habit

  1173. of looking to

  1174. Jesus.

  1175. Looking to Jesus'

  1176. death on the cross

  1177. in our place,

  1178. following him in the

  1179. strength of the

  1180. Holy Spirit.

1181. The more we look to

  1182. Jesus, the more we

  1183. love him, the more

  1184. we should love his

  1185. family.

  1186. It means knowing

  1187. that good things

  1188. come to us through

  1189. being here on a

  1190. Sunday.

  1191. And Christian, you

  1192. must also remember

  1193. that he has, God

  1194. has given his gifts

  1195. very widely.

1196. I do not have all

  1197. that I need to

  1198. function as a

  1199. healthy member of

  1200. the body of Christ.

  1201. I can't do all

1202. that I need to do

  1203. or change in all

1204. the ways I need to

  1205. change apart from

  1206. the body.

  1207. We can turn back

  1208. to Ephesians 4 and

  1209. 11 to 13 and see

  1210. there that it was

  1211. the whole body as

  1212. the gifts were

  1213. distributed that

  1214. grew and changed

  1215. and matured until

  1216. the whole church is

  1217. brought to

  1218. completeness and

  1219. fullness in Christ

  1220. as we minister one

  1221. to another.

  1222. So can I encourage

  1223. you to pray for

  1224. our gatherings?

  1225. Pray as we come

  1226. together on a

  1227. Sunday and as we

  1228. gather, especially at

  1229. our members meetings

1230. as well, that if the

  1231. church gathers that

  1232. we would love one

  1233. another, that we

  1234. would honor Christ,

  1235. that we would care

  1236. for one another,

  1237. that we would gather

1238. in a good order that

  1239. shows our love for

  1240. Jesus and his body.

  1241. For sincere

  1242. Christians hurt or

  1243. abused by a church,

  1244. commitment like this

  1245. to a local church

1246. can be a very slow

  1247. and understandably a

  1248. very hard process.

  1249. And I think we

  1250. must make some

  1251. sense of the

  1252. shameful ways that

  1253. some local churches

  1254. or institutional

  1255. churches have

  1256. acted.

  1257. We want to say

  1258. that we see

  1259. Christ when the

  1260. church gathers.

  1261. When the church

  1262. gathers, we can

  1263. see Jesus.

  1264. But how can we

  1265. see Jesus in

  1266. abuse?

  1267. How can we see

  1268. Jesus in

  1269. scandal?

  1270. Given such

  1271. failings, we

  1272. can understand

  1273. that people

  1274. turn aside from

  1275. church and

  1276. begin to look

  1277. elsewhere for

  1278. Christ.

  1279. I just want to

  1280. give three ways

  1281. briefly that can

  1282. help us to think

  1283. through our love

  1284. for Jesus and

  1285. his church in the

  1286. midst of failings.

  1287. Firstly, we need

  1288. to admit that

  1289. churches fail.

  1290. Leaders are

  1291. sometimes

  1292. characterized by

  1293. unrepented and

  1294. gross sin rather

  1295. than humble

  1296. service.

  1297. Good structures

  1298. within the life

  1299. of the church

  1300. can be and

  1301. are abused.

  1302. And when we

  1303. see or even

  1304. directly experience

  1305. abusive leadership,

  1306. we should in

  1307. most cases

  1308. flee.

  1309. Flee.

  1310. Flee.

  1311. For the sake of

  1312. your own heart,

  1313. for your family,

  1314. for your witness to

  1315. the other members

  1316. that are sane,

  1317. and your witness

  1318. to a watching

  1319. world, we

  1320. should not lend

  1321. our credibility

  1322. to an abusive

  1323. church.

  1324. Secondly, the

  1325. New Testament

  1326. church, as we

  1327. read about, knew

  1328. of abuse and

  1329. scandal.

  1330. What we read in

  1331. 1 Corinthians,

  1332. where Paul is

  1333. encouraging good

  1334. order in the

  1335. church, Paul was

  1336. writing to a

  1337. church that was

  1338. filled with wrong

  1339. and shameful

  1340. practices.

  1341. We had wealthy

  1342. Christians dominating

  1343. poor Christians in

  1344. the life of the

  1345. church.

  1346. There was sexual

  1347. relationships happening

  1348. in the church that

  1349. the world was ashamed

  1350. of and the world

  1351. would have covered

  1352. up, and yet the

  1353. church, it was

  1354. happening openly.

  1355. There was chaos and

  1356. hurt when the church

  1357. gathered like this,

  1358. and pain at the

  1359. gatherings and the

  1360. meetings.

  1361. Paul still calls

  1362. them saints at the

  1363. start of the

  1364. letter.

  1365. And with apostolic

  1366. authority, authority

  1367. given by Christ, Paul

  1368. calls them back to

  1369. follow Jesus, to

  1370. follow Jesus.

  1371. You see, the

  1372. prescription for a

  1373. sick church isn't

  1374. less order and

  1375. greater individualism.

  1376. That's not the

  1377. prescription for the

  1378. problem.

  1379. It's this, it's

  1380. repentance through the

  1381. power of the Spirit

  1382. that's seen in a

  1383. love for Jesus.

  1384. Having the Spirit

  1385. work and change us

  1386. so that we obey

  1387. his commands, that

  1388. we put sin to

  1389. death, that we

  1390. love one another,

  1391. that we do good

  1392. works and persevere.

  1393. You see, that's

  1394. what makes a

  1395. healthy church.

  1396. Not less order

  1397. and greater

  1398. individualism, but a

  1399. proper prescription

1400. of a love for Jesus

1401. and a love for his

  1402. people.

  1403. Third thing, and

  1404. this is very

  1405. pertinent to us as

  1406. a family of

  1407. believers, we must

  1408. hold one another

  1409. to account.

  1410. You see, members

  1411. appoint elders and

  1412. deacons in this

  1413. church and members

  1414. welcome new

  1415. members and where

  1416. necessary, members

  1417. remove leaders or

  1418. other members.

  1419. You see, Carraghline

  1420. Baptist Church is a

  1421. congregational-based

  1422. church government.

  1423. What does that

  1424. mean?

  1425. Well, among other

  1426. things, this, that we

  1427. believe that Jesus

  1428. himself gave the

  1429. keys of the kingdom

  1430. to the gathered

  1431. congregation when he

  1432. said in Matthew 18,

  1433. tell it to the

  1434. church.

  1435. Jesus says that the

  1436. final court, when it

  1437. comes to issues of

  1438. sin and abuse and

  1439. bad practice, it's

1440. not in the end the

  1441. elders, although it's

1442. good to speak to the

  1443. elders.

1444. It's not in the end

  1445. a Christian that you

  1446. meet up with at

  1447. Starbucks for coffee.

  1448. It's not a bishop or

  1449. a presbytery, but it's

  1450. the church.

  1451. It's the gathered

  1452. body, the members.

  1453. I think our best

  1454. protection for the

  1455. life and witness of

  1456. our church is to

  1457. know the mind of

  1458. Christ through the

  1459. gathering of the

  1460. church members as we

  1461. listen to the spirit

  1462. through his word.

  1463. All of this matters.

  1464. All of these things

  1465. matter as our witness

  1466. of Christ to a

  1467. dying world.

  1468. This is the last

  1469. point.

  1470. All that we spoke

  1471. of, our humble life

  1472. together as we love

  1473. one another, our

  1474. meeting together in

  1475. good order, our

  1476. patient discipline of

  1477. one another as we

  1478. bear witness to the

  1479. reality of a risen

  1480. saviour to the

  1481. people around us.

  1482. All of these things

  1483. hold together and

  1484. bear witness to

  1485. Christ.

1486. This is one of the

  1487. greatest themes of,

  1488. the great themes of

  1489. the Peter's letter,

  1490. 1 Peter.

1491. And let us just look

  1492. briefly at some

  1493. verses from 1 Peter.

  1494. This theme that the

  1495. worked out membership

  1496. of the church as

  1497. believers work that

  1498. out in practice, it

  1499. bears witness to the

1500. love of Christ to the

  1501. world.

1502. We're going to look at

  1503. two passages.

  1504. 1 Peter chapter 2 and

    1 Peter 2 chapter mention

  1505. verses 11 to 17.

1506. If I can get to the

  1507. right location.

  1508. 1 Peter 2, 11 to 17.

1509. And I'm just going to

  1510. focus on verses 11, 12

  1511. and 17.

  1512. Dear friends, I urge

  1513. you as foreigners and

  1514. exiles to abstain from

  1515. sinful desires which

  1516. wage war against your

  1517. soul.

  1518. Live such good lives

  1519. among the pagans or

  1520. those that aren't

  1521. believers that though

1522. they accuse you of doing

  1523. wrong, they may see

  1524. your good deeds and

1525. glorify God on the day

  1526. he visits us.

  1527. Down to verse 17.

  1528. Show proper respect to

  1529. everyone.

  1530. Love the family of

  1531. believers.

1532. Fear God and honor the

  1533. emperor.

  1534. You see, we're coming

  1535. back to this again,

  1536. aren't we?

  1537. Where we started, if

1538. you want to bear witness

1539. to Jesus in a corrupt

  1540. and broken world, God

  1541. says above all things,

  1542. love your family.

  1543. Love the family of

  1544. believers.

1545. If we turn over to

  1546. chapter 4, look at

  1547. verses 7 and 8.

1548. The end of all things

  1549. is near.

  1550. Therefore be alert and

  1551. of sober minds that

  1552. you may pray.

  1553. Listen to this.

  1554. Above all, love each

  1555. other deeply.

  1556. Because love covers

  1557. over a multitude of

  1558. sins.

  1559. Above all, love each

  1560. other deeply.

1561. You see, love is an

  1562. action that keeps no

  1563. record of wrong, but

  1564. forgives as the Lord

  1565. forgave us.

  1566. This is why Jesus

  1567. said, by this everyone

1568. will know that you are

  1569. my disciples.

  1570. If you love one

  1571. another, a unique love

  1572. that the world cannot,

  1573. cannot, cannot offer.

  1574. Jonathan Lehman has a

  1575. short book about church

  1576. membership and he puts

  1577. it like this.

  1578. You see, it's through

  1579. the lives of its

  1580. members, the local

  1581. church defines, defines

  1582. love for the world.

  1583. Jesus says, greater

1584. love has no one to

1585. lay down his life for

  1586. his friends.

1587. And then he calls us

1588. by saying, if you love

  1589. me, keep my commands.

  1590. This is a combination

  1591. that the world just

  1592. does not understand.

1593. But this is the love

  1594. of God.

  1595. Love and holiness

  1596. are not opposed to

  1597. one another, but

  1598. partner together to

  1599. lead people to God.

  1600. Our holy life

  1601. together, marked by

  1602. walking in love and

  1603. gathering as a church

  1604. body, is God's

  1605. witness of the love

  1606. of Christ in the

  1607. world.

  1608. One brief application

  1609. or challenge maybe as

  1610. we finish.

1611. Maybe I'd like you to

  1612. go away and think

  1613. about this.

1614. How would you begin to

  1615. help a fellow

  1616. Christian, maybe

  1617. someone in this

  1618. church that says,

  1619. well, I get more

  1620. out of listening to

  1621. online sermons and

1622. songs at home and I

  1623. meet up with a

  1624. couple of friends

  1625. during the week to

  1626. pray.

1627. I get more out of

1628. that than I do out

1629. of being part of a

  1630. local church and

  1631. gathering on a

  1632. Sunday.

  1633. How would you begin

  1634. to challenge that or

  1635. to think about that

  1636. from God's word or

1637. to see why that may

  1638. not be sufficient?

  1639. Finally, I was

  1640. asked about church

  1641. membership recently

  1642. and the question was

1643. this, it was a good

  1644. question.

  1645. What more would I

1646. have to do if I was a

  1647. member?

  1648. What more would I

1649. have to do if I was a

  1650. member?

1651. I hope that you see

  1652. this morning that a

  1653. member isn't about

  1654. being another type of

  1655. Christian with additional

  1656. responsibilities that are

  1657. tagged on.

  1658. Membership is about

  1659. realizing what it means

  1660. to be a Christian

  1661. within a family.

1662. The call is to love

  1663. one another, to bear

  1664. with one another, to

  1665. pray for one another,

  1666. to gather with one

  1667. another.

1668. This is all expressed in

  1669. our church covenant,

1670. which is part of our

  1671. church constitution here

  1672. in Carragoline.

1673. I was able to share that

1674. with the person asking the

  1675. question and to reassure

1676. them that it's not about

  1677. more, but it's about

  1678. continuing to love the

  1679. church family as they

  1680. were already doing.

1681. I'd like to finish with

  1682. sharing these words from

  1683. the covenant.

  1684. Recognizing our own

  1685. unworthiness and

  1686. inability and in total

  1687. dependence upon God, we

  1688. now covenant to give

  1689. ourselves first to God

1690. and then to this local

  1691. church.

1692. That we will endeavor to

  1693. walk in holiness and

  1694. brotherly love, being

  1695. concerned to honor God

  1696. in our lives and

  1697. encourage one another to

1698. love and good works, to

1699. pray for one another and

  1700. to bear each other's

  1701. burdens.

1702. That we will at all times

1703. be loyal to each other,

  1704. being patient with one

  1705. another's weaknesses and

  1706. failings, seeking to

  1707. maintain unity and avoid

  1708. all causes of division.

1709. That we will endeavor to

  1710. meet together on the

1711. Lord's Day and all other

1712. meetings of the church as

  1713. we have opportunity,

  1714. encouraging one another by

1715. our attendance to pray for

  1716. and encourage the officers

1717. of the church in the

  1718. discharge of their duty.

  1719. Let's pray.

1720. Lord, we thank you for the

1721. love that you have shown to

  1722. us through your son,

  1723. Jesus Christ.

1724. We thank you that he has

1725. died in our place so that

1726. we could be accepted by you

  1727. into your family.

1728. We thank you for one

  1729. another.

1730. Convict us, Lord, of our bad

1731. attitude at times to one

  1732. another.

1733. our desire for self above

  1734. others.

1735. But help us, Lord, to

1736. change, to grow into all

  1737. fullness, to become more

1738. like Jesus through the life

  1739. of this church in

  1740. Carragoline.

1741. For your glory and to bear

1742. witness to the world around.

  1743. Amen.

  1744. Amen.

  1745. Amen.

  1746. Amen.

  1747. Amen.

  1748. Amen.

  1749. Amen.

  1750. Amen.

  1751. Amen.

  1752. Amen.

  1753. Amen.
