  1. Morning. It's quite a long section, but it's full of drama. It's a very exciting event that takes place on Mount Carmel.

  2. So we're going to pick up the reading from 1 Kings chapter 18 and verse 16. 1 Kings chapter 18 and verse 16.

1 Kings 18 chapter mention 1 Kings 18 chapter mention

  3. So let's hear God's word to us. We're going to read down to verse 39.

  4. So Obadiah went to meet Ahab and told him, and Ahab then went to meet Elijah.

  5. When Ahab saw Elijah, he said to him, is that you, you troubler of Israel?

  6. I have not made trouble for Israel, Elijah replied, but you and your father's family have.

  7. You have abandoned the Lord's commands and have followed the Baals.

  8. Now summon the people from all over Israel to meet me on Mount Carmel and bring the 450 prophets of Baal

  9. and the 400 prophets of Asherah who eat at Jezebel's table.

  10. So Ahab sent word throughout all Israel and assembled the prophets on Mount Carmel.

  11. Elijah went before the people and said, how long will you waver between two opinions?

  12. If the Lord is God, follow him.

  13. But if Baal is God, follow him.

  14. But the people said nothing.

  15. Then Elijah said to them, I am the only one of the Lord's prophets left.

  16. But Baal has 450 prophets.

  17. Get two bulls for us.

  18. Let Baal's prophets choose one for themselves and let them cut it into pieces, put it on the wood,

  19. but not set fire to it.

  20. I will prepare the other bull and put it on the wood, but not set fire to it.

  21. Then you will call on the name of your God and I will call on the name of the Lord.

  22. The God who answers by fire, he is God.

  23. Then all the people said, what you say is good.

  24. Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, choose one of the bulls and prepare it first,

  25. since there are so many of you.

  26. Call on the name of your God, but do not light the fire.

  27. So they took the bull that was given to them and prepared it.

  28. Then they called on the name of Baal from morning till noon.

  29. Baal, answer us, they shouted.

  30. But there was no response.

  31. No one answered.

  32. Now jump down to verse 30.

  33. Then Elijah said to all the people, come here to me.

  34. They came to him and he repaired the altar of the Lord, which had been torn down.

  35. Elijah took 12 stones, one for each of the tribes descended from Jacob,

  36. to whom the word of the Lord had come, saying, your name shall be Israel.

  37. With the stones he built an altar in the name of the Lord.

  38. And he dug a trench around it, large enough to hold two seats of seed.

  39. He arranged the wood, cut the bull into pieces, laid it on the wood.

  40. Then he said to them, fill four large jars with water and pour it on the offering and on the wood.

  41. Do it again, he said.

  42. And they did it again.

  43. Do it a third time, he ordered.

  44. And they did it a third time.

  45. And the water ran down around the altar and even filled the trench.

  46. At the time of sacrifice, the prophet Elijah stepped forward and prayed,

  47. Lord, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel,

  48. let it be known today that you are God in Israel

  49. and that I am your servant and have done all the things at your command.

  50. Answer me, Lord.

  51. Lord, answer me.

  52. So these people will know that you, Lord, are God and that you are turning their hearts back again.

  53. Then fire of the Lord fell and burned up the sacrifice, the wood, the stones and the soil

  54. and also licked up the water in the trench.

  55. When all the people saw this, they fell prostrate and cried,

  56. The Lord, he is God.

  57. The Lord, he is God.

  58. Well, what a drama on the mountain.

  59. Well, we're going to pray and then we're going to look at God's word together.

  60. Let's pray and ask for his help.

  61. Father, we thank you for your word, the Bible.

  62. We thank you for these events, these true historical events,

  63. which happened so many years ago but written down and recorded for us

  64. so we can learn about you and know what you are like.

  65. And we ask that you would give us understanding of your word

  66. and how it applies to us today.

  67. In Jesus' name we pray.

  68. Amen.

  69. Well, I want to start with a question.

  70. God is.

  71. How would you answer that question?

  72. God is.

  73. Well, the Irish Times conducted a survey asking people that very question

  74. and here's what some of them responded with.

  75. One said, God is a person to me.

  76. Another one said,

  77. If anything, God is disconnected at this point.

  78. A student answered,

  79. God is sovereign of the universe.

  80. He has the right to tell us what to do because he is the creator.

  81. Another person said,

  82. God is asleep.

  83. When things go too far,

  84. maybe he'll wake up.

  85. God is what humans want to be.

  86. Another,

  87. God is me.

  88. Another student says,

  89. God is,

  90. there is no God.

  91. God is everything around us.

  92. So it seems there is a variety of opinions as to who God is.

  93. But can we definitively know who God is?

  94. Well, I think that's the big question being asked of the text,

  95. the reading we just had from 1 Kings.

  96. We're going to look at three things this morning.

  97. Here's the first question we're going to ask.

  98. Who is the true God?

  99. Who is the true God?

  100. Remember what's been going on in the account of 1 Kings.

  101. You might just flick back a couple of pages to the very end of chapter 16.

  102. And there we've been learning that Ahab is king over all of God's people.

  103. And as king,

  104. part of his leadership was to make sure that people worshipped only God.

  105. The God who loved them.

  106. The God who made them.

  107. The God who had made promises to them.

  108. The God who entered into a relationship with them and was committed and loyal to them.

  109. But, and here's the problem.

  110. Look at verse 31 of chapter 16.

  111. He, that is Ahab,

  112. not only considered it trivial to commit the sins of Jeroboam, son of Nebat,

  113. but he also married Jezebel, daughter of Esbal, king of the Sidonians,

  114. and began to serve Baal and worship him.

  115. Now, we might be used to Baal.

  116. But Baal at that time was the big God.

  117. The God of the weather.

  118. So if you wanted rain for your crops,

  119. well then you simply called on Baal.

  120. And it would rain.

  121. So they hoped.

  122. But God was not going to let his people wander away from him.

  123. He was jealous for them.

  124. He loved them.

  125. God was like in a marriage relationship with them.

  126. He didn't want to let them go.

  127. So God confronted Ahab through his prophet Elijah.

  128. Chapter 17, verse 1.

  129. Now Elijah, the Tishbite from Tishbe in Gilead, a prophet of God, said to Ahab,

  130. As the Lord, the God of Israel, lives, whom I serve,

  131. there will be neither dew nor rain in the next few years except my word.

  132. Chapter 18, verse 1.

  133. After a long time, in the third year, so three years later,

  134. the word of the Lord came to Elijah,

  135. Go and present yourself to Ahab,

  136. and I will send rain to the land.

  137. You see, God was sending a very clear message to Ahab and his people.

  138. There is only one true God.

  139. There is only one God who controls the weather.

  140. The God who made everything and the God who rules everything.

  141. I am the God who provides all that you have.

  142. So worship me.

  143. Chapter 18, verse 2.

  144. So Elijah went to present himself to Ahab,

  145. and on his way, if we were to read on,

  146. Elijah meets this character called Obadiah,

  147. who is also a follower of God,

  148. and Elijah sends Obadiah to arrange a meeting with Ahab.

  149. Let's pick it up again in verse 16.

  150. So Obadiah went to meet Ahab and told him,

  151. and Ahab then went to meet Elijah.

  152. When he saw Elijah, he said to him,

  153. Is that you, you troubler of Israel?

  154. You see, we've got to remember,

  155. the last time Elijah had met Ahab

  156. was when he had told him,

  157. God says no more rain for three years.

  158. Now three years have passed,

  159. and there's been a terrible famine,

  160. and things are really difficult,

  161. Ahab is really angry,

  162. and so he's not best pleased to see Elijah.

  163. But let's be clear whose fault it really is.

  164. Verse 18.

  165. Elijah says,

  166. Remember God's command?

  167. I am the Lord your God.

  168. You shall have no other gods before me.

  169. It's not that there are lots of other gods.

  170. The Bible makes this exclusive claim,

  171. there is only one true God.

  172. Here's a verse from Deuteronomy.

  173. Acknowledge and take to heart this day

  174. that the Lord is God.

  175. In heaven above and on earth below,

  176. there is no other.

  177. So God is making it abundantly clear

  178. that he is the only God.

  179. But it seems Ahab is of the opinion

  180. there are other gods.

  181. He worships the Baals.

  182. You see, Ahab has not only rejected God,

  183. he's replaced God with his own gods.

  184. And isn't that exactly what we do?

  185. We exchange the true God

  186. for our own gods.

  187. We mightn't have a little idol of Baal

  188. in our garden that we go and talk to

  189. and say,

  190. Gosh, don't like those clouds.

  191. Baal, could you remove those clouds

  192. and send a bit of sunshine?

  193. We mightn't do that.

  194. But we have got our own little God substitutes.

  195. Richard Keyes is an author

  196. and in a book called

  197. No God But God,

  198. he explains it like this.

  199. Here's a quote.

  200. He says,

  201. When we cease to worship God,

  202. we do not worship nothing.

  203. We worship anything.

  204. We do not just eliminate God,

  205. we erect God's substitutes

  206. in his place.

  207. So let me ask us all a question.

  208. Who or what is your God?

  209. What is your God?

  210. Well, I think there's two ways

  211. to help us to identify

  212. who our God is.

  213. First, ask ourselves this question.

  214. What do I most fear losing

  215. in my life?

  216. What thing or person

  217. that you have in your life,

  218. if you lost it,

  219. if it was taken away from you,

  220. it would devastate you,

  221. it would break you?

  222. What if your husband

  223. or your wife

  224. was taken away?

  225. Or what if tomorrow

  226. you went in

  227. and you discovered

  228. you had no more job?

  229. Or if you lost your health?

  230. What is the one thing

  231. that you most fear losing

  232. in your life?

  233. Another good question

  234. to ask is this.

  235. What do you most want

  236. in your life?

  237. What occupies your mind

  238. when you wake up

  239. in the morning?

  240. Or as you lie in bed at night

  241. and everything else is gone,

  242. it's just you and your thoughts.

  243. What is it that you think about

  244. and you most desire

  245. in your life?

  246. Is it more money?

  247. Is it deeper sexual pleasure?

  248. What is it that you most want

  249. in your life?

  250. You see,

  251. whatever we fear losing,

  252. whatever we most want in our life,

  253. whatever occupies our thinking

  254. and our striving,

  255. that's your God.

  256. that's what you worship.

  257. For Ahab,

  258. it was Baal.

  259. For us,

  260. it may be the God of money,

  261. the God of success,

  262. the God of sex,

  263. the God of body image.

  264. Well,

  265. Elijah has a plan.

  266. He arranges for all the people

  267. of Israel

  268. and all the prophets of Baal

  269. to come and meet them together

  270. on Mount Carmel.

  271. Verse 20.

  272. So Ahab sent word

  273. throughout all Israel

  274. and they assembled

  275. the prophets

  276. on Mount Carmel.

  277. Now,

  278. Mount Carmel

  279. wasn't just any

  280. ordinary hill

  281. in the area.

  282. It was like

  283. the cathedral

  284. of Baal worship.

  285. This was

  286. Baal territory.

  287. This is kind of

  288. where

  289. he was.

  290. And this was

  291. going to settle

  292. things once

  293. and for all.

  294. On this mountain,

  295. they were going

  296. to discover

  297. who the true God is.

  298. Verse 21.

  299. Elijah went

  300. before the people

  301. and said,

  302. How long

  303. will you waver

  304. between two opinions?

  305. If the Lord

  306. is God,

  307. follow him.

  308. But if Baal

  309. is God,

  310. follow him.

  311. But the people

  312. said nothing.

  313. They couldn't

  314. make up their minds.

  315. In other words,

  316. he's saying,

  317. Pick your God.

  318. Choose whoever

  319. and whatever you want.

  320. And when you've

  321. chosen your God,

  322. follow him.

  323. But remember,

  324. the God of the Bible

  325. is an exclusive God.

  326. You can't

  327. pick your own God

  328. and then have

  329. the true God

  330. in case of

  331. an emergency.

  332. So like,

  333. I'll forget about

  334. the God of the Bible,

  335. I'll have my own God,

  336. but if I get into trouble,

  337. I'll go and give him a call.

  338. No,

  339. choose

  340. the God

  341. you're going to follow.

  342. And we can't

  343. have this

  344. different kind of God

  345. that we have on

  346. Monday to Saturday

  347. and then come Sunday

  348. we change to

  349. kind of the

  350. holy religious God.

  351. It doesn't work

  352. like that.

  353. if the Lord

  354. is God,

  355. if the Creator

  356. God

  357. is God,

  358. follow him.

  359. But if

  360. Baal or your

  361. own God

  362. is God,

  363. well,

  364. follow him.

  365. Make your choice.

  366. You see,

  367. the God we choose

  368. is the God

  369. we're ultimately

  370. going to follow.

  371. The God that we

  372. desire,

  373. the things that we

  374. long for,

  375. the people that we

  376. most want,

  377. they're the ones

  378. and the things

  379. we're going to trust

  380. and submit our

  381. life to.

  382. But be careful.

  383. Whoever we follow,

  384. whatever we follow,

  385. will demand our

  386. loyalty

  387. and demand our

  388. obedience

  389. and will want

  390. all of our time

  391. and our

  392. energies.

  393. So who is it

  394. going to be?

  395. The point is,

  396. we all have a

  397. God that we

  398. worship.

  399. the question

  400. is,

  401. who is the

  402. real,

  403. true God?

  404. Well,

  405. second,

  406. God is claiming

  407. that he's the

  408. true God.

  409. Well,

  410. how do we know

  411. who the true

  412. God is?

  413. How can we

  414. work that out?

  415. Well,

  416. let's go back

  417. to Mount Carmel

  418. because Elijah

  419. has a test.

  420. We can call it

  421. the truth test,

  422. verse 23.

  423. Elijah says,

  424. get two bulls

  425. for us.

  426. Let the

  427. Baals,

  428. let the

  429. Baals

  430. prophets choose

  431. one for

  432. themselves and

  433. let them cut

  434. it into pieces,

  435. put it on the

  436. wood,

  437. but not set

  438. fire to it.

  439. And I will

  440. prepare the

  441. other bull and

  442. I'll put it on

  443. the wood,

  444. but not set

  445. fire to it.

  446. Then you call

  447. on the name

  448. of your God

  449. and I'll call

  450. on the name

  451. of the Lord

  452. and the God

  453. who answers

  454. by fire,

  455. well,

  456. he's your

  457. God.

  458. And all

  459. the people

  460. said,

  461. sounds good

  462. to me,

  463. pretty obvious.

  464. But why

  465. fire?

  466. Why call

  467. down fire?

  468. I thought

  469. this was all

  470. about the

  471. rain that had

  472. stopped and

  473. the rain that

  474. was going to

  475. come and

  476. who controlled

  477. the weather.

  478. Well,

  479. fire was

  480. always a

  481. sign of

  482. power and

  483. the sign

  484. of presence

  485. of the

  486. God.

  487. fire.

  488. When fire

  489. showed up,

  490. certainly as we

  491. read through

  492. the Bible,

  493. God is

  494. present in

  495. power.

  496. Remember the

  497. burning bush?

  498. Remember the

  499. fire on the

  500. mountain as

  501. Moses went up

  502. to speak with

  503. God?

  504. Even for

  505. Baal worshippers,

  506. fire from

  507. heaven was a

  508. sign of

  509. power.

  510. fire.

  511. So the

  512. test was

  513. really simple.

  514. The God

  515. who answers

  516. by fire,

  517. he's the

  518. true God.

  519. So the

  520. prophets of

  521. Baal go

  522. first.

  523. Verse 26,

  524. they took

  525. the bowl

  526. that was

  527. given to

  528. them,

  529. they prepared

  530. it,

  531. put it on

  532. this altar,

  533. and then

  534. they called

  535. on the name

  536. of Baal.

  537. From morning,

  538. that's from

  539. about six

  540. in the

  541. morning,

  542. till noon.

  543. Baal,

  544. answer us!

  545. They shouted,

  546. but there

  547. was no

  548. response.

  549. No one

  550. answered.

  551. They began

  552. to dance

  553. around the

  554. altar they

  555. had made.

  556. After six

  557. hours,

  558. noon,

  559. Elijah began

  560. to taunt

  561. them.

  562. Shout

  563. louder!

  564. Surely

  565. he is a

  566. God.

  567. Perhaps

  568. he's deep

  569. in thought.

  570. Maybe

  571. he's

  572. planning out

  573. his day

  574. and you

  575. need to

  576. get his

  577. attention.

  578. Or perhaps

  579. he's busy.

  580. Literally,

  581. maybe he's

  582. sitting on

  583. the toilet.

  584. You need

  585. to go and

  586. get him.

  587. Or he's

  588. travelling,

  589. he's away

  590. on his

  591. holidays,

  592. maybe he'll

  593. come back

  594. later.

  595. Or maybe

  596. he's sleeping

  597. and he's

  598. got to be

  599. wakened up.

  600. So they

  601. shouted

  602. louder and

  603. slashed

  604. themselves

  605. with swords

  606. and spears

  607. as was

  608. their custom

  609. until their

  610. blood flowed.

  611. Midday

  612. passed and

  613. they continued

  614. their frantic

  615. prophesying until

  616. the time of

  617. the evening

  618. sacrifice.

  619. But there

  620. was no

  621. response.

  622. No one

  623. answered.

  624. No one

  625. paid

  626. attention.

  627. attention.

  628. Four

  629. hundred and

  630. fifty prophets

  631. dancing for

  632. twelve hours

  633. on the go.

  634. All getting

  635. worked up and

  636. blood pouring

  637. from their

  638. bodies.

  639. But at the

  640. end of it

  641. all, end

  642. of verse

  643. twenty-nine,

  644. no response.

  645. No one

  646. answered.

  647. No one

  648. paid attention.

  649. Baal

  650. doesn't

  651. answer

  652. because he

  653. doesn't have

  654. power.

  655. Baal

  656. doesn't

  657. answer

  658. because

  659. Baal

  660. doesn't

  661. exist.

  662. Baal

  663. is just

  664. a name,

  665. an imagination,

  666. a made-up,

  667. make-believe

  668. God.

  669. When I

  670. was small,

  671. I used to

  672. wear a

  673. little black

  674. Zorro

  675. mask.

  676. I put it

  677. on and

  678. I changed.

  679. I was

  680. invincible.

  681. It gave

  682. me powers

  683. like you

  684. never knew

  685. before.

  686. It even

  687. enabled me

  688. to swim.

  689. I couldn't

  690. swim without

  691. it but

  692. put the

  693. Zorro

  694. mask on.

  695. I could

  696. swim.

  697. I could

  698. fend off

  699. baddies,

  700. fight sea

  701. monsters.

  702. I could

  703. do

  704. anything.

  705. But it's

  706. all made-believe.

  707. And that's

  708. what our

  709. gods are

  710. like.

  711. It's like

  712. a mask.

  713. They're

  714. just

  715. imaginations.

  716. We have

  717. believed

  718. what Satan

  719. said to

  720. Adam in

  721. the garden

  722. right at

  723. the beginning

  724. of the

  725. story of

  726. the Bible.

  727. Satan

  728. came to

  729. Adam and

  730. said,

  731. you can

  732. be like

  733. God.

  734. You can

  735. be God.

  736. Forget about

  737. the true

  738. God.

  739. You be

  740. God and

  741. decide what's

  742. right and

  743. what's wrong.

  744. And people

  745. ever since,

  746. we've all

  747. done it,

  748. we continue

  749. to fall

  750. into the

  751. same trap.

  752. The

  753. apostle Paul

  754. in the

  755. New Testament

  756. picks it

  757. up and he

  758. makes it

  759. crystal clear.

  760. He says,

  761. the God

  762. of this

  763. age has

  764. blinded the

  765. minds of

  766. unbelievers so

  767. that we do

  768. not worship

  769. the true

  770. God.

  771. You see,

  772. the gods

  773. we make,

  774. whether I

  775. am God

  776. and see

  777. myself as

  778. God,

  779. or whether

  780. we think of

  781. nature as

  782. being God,

  783. or even if

  784. we say there

  785. is no

  786. God,

  787. it's all

  788. a lie.

  789. Now Elijah

  790. steps up.

  791. And to

  792. demonstrate who

  793. the true

  794. God is,

  795. look what he

  796. does in

  797. verse 33.

  798. He arranged

  799. the wood,

  800. cut the

  801. bull into

  802. pieces,

  803. laid it on

  804. the wood,

  805. then he

  806. said,

  807. fill four

  808. jars of

  809. water and

  810. pour it on

  811. the offering

  812. and on

  813. the wood.

  814. Do it

  815. again,

  816. do it a

  817. third time,

  818. and they

  819. pour water

  820. on,

  821. gallons of

  822. water,

  823. all onto

  824. the altar,

  825. and everything

  826. is soaking

  827. wet.

  828. Have you

  829. ever tried to

  830. light a

  831. fire when

  832. everything is

  833. wet?

  834. I mean,

  835. if this is

  836. going to

  837. burn,

  838. it's going

  839. to need

  840. some fire.

  841. There's no

  842. tricks,

  843. there's no

  844. sleight of

  845. hand here.

  846. Verse 36,

  847. at the time

  848. of sacrifice,

  849. the prophet

  850. Elijah stepped

  851. forward and

  852. prayed,

  853. Lord,

  854. the God of

  855. Abraham,

  856. Isaac,

  857. and Israel,

  858. this is the

  859. promise-making,

  860. promise-keeping

  861. God,

  862. who says,

  863. I will be

  864. your God

  865. and you

  866. will be

  867. my people.

  868. Let it

  869. be known

  870. today that

  871. you are

  872. God in

  873. Israel and

  874. that I

  875. am your

  876. servant,

  877. have done

  878. all the

  879. things you

  880. have commanded.

  881. Verse 38,

  882. then the

  883. fire of the

  884. Lord fell

  885. and burned

  886. up the

  887. sacrifice,

  888. the wood,

  889. the stones,

  890. and the

  891. soil,

  892. and it

  893. also licked

  894. up the

  895. water in

  896. the trench.

  897. And when

  898. all the

  899. people saw

  900. this,

  901. they fell

  902. prostrate and

  903. cried,

  904. the Lord,

  905. he is

  906. God.

  907. The

  908. Lord,

  909. he is

  910. God.

  911. I mean,

  912. it's utterly

  913. convincing.

  914. It's

  915. undeniable.

  916. And in

  917. case there

  918. are any

  919. doubts

  920. lingering,

  921. just jump

  922. ahead to

  923. verse 45,

  924. because

  925. remember,

  926. God had

  927. said no

  928. rain,

  929. and then

  930. he said

  931. he would

  932. bring the

  933. rain.

  934. Verse 45,

  935. meanwhile,

  936. the sky

  937. grew black

  938. with clouds,

  939. the wind

  940. rose,

  941. a heavy

  942. rainstorm

  943. came on,

  944. and Ahab

  945. rode off

  946. to

  947. Jezreel.

  948. I mean,

  949. what more

  950. proof do

  951. we need?

  952. God

  953. said no

  954. rain,

  955. and there

  956. was no

  957. rain.

  958. God

  959. said let

  960. there be

  961. rain,

  962. and there

  963. was rain.

  964. God

  965. said let

  966. there be

  967. fire,

  968. and there

  969. was fire.

  970. You see,

  971. the gods

  972. of our

  973. making are

  974. powerless.

  975. there is

  976. only one

  977. true

  978. God.

  979. Listen to

  980. the writer

  981. of Psalm

  982. 115.

  983. I have it

  984. on the

  985. screen there.

  986. Why do

  987. the nation

  988. say,

  989. where is

  990. their God?

  991. Answer,

  992. our God

  993. is in

  994. heaven.

  995. He does

  996. whatever

  997. pleases

  998. him,

  999. but their

  1000. idols are

  1001. silver and

  1002. gold made

  1003. by human

  1004. hands.

  1005. They have

  1006. mouths,

  1007. but cannot

  1008. speak,

  1009. eyes,

  1010. but cannot

  1011. see,

  1012. they have

  1013. ears,

  1014. but cannot

  1015. hear,

  1016. noses,

  1017. but cannot

  1018. smell,

  1019. hands,

  1020. but cannot

  1021. feel,

  1022. feet,

  1023. but cannot

  1024. walk,

  1025. nor can

  1026. they utter

  1027. a sound

  1028. with their

  1029. throats.

  1030. Those who

  1031. make them

  1032. will be

  1033. like them,

  1034. and so

  1035. will all

  1036. who trust

  1037. in them.

  1038. There's

  1039. only one

  1040. true God,

  1041. the God

  1042. who made

  1043. the heaven

  1044. and the

  1045. earth,

  1046. who rules

  1047. all things

  1048. and all

  1049. people.

  1050. He is

  1051. the God

  1052. that we

  1053. should

  1054. worship.

  1055. So,

  1056. third

  1057. question,

  1058. what does

  1059. this true

  1060. God demand

  1061. of us?

  1062. If God,

  1063. the creator

  1064. God,

  1065. the God

  1066. of the

  1067. Bible,

  1068. who makes

  1069. promises

  1070. and keeps

  1071. them,

  1072. what does

  1073. this God

  1074. demand of

  1075. people like

  1076. us?

  1077. Well,

  1078. to answer

  1079. that,

  1080. let's

  1081. look just

  1082. briefly

  1083. at three

  1084. things.

  1085. First,

  1086. look at

  1087. the way

  1088. the prophets

  1089. of Baal

  1090. call on

  1091. their God.

  1092. Verse 26.

  1093. They

  1094. called on

  1095. the name

  1096. of Baal

  1097. from morning

  1098. till noon.

  1099. Baal,

  1100. answer us,

  1101. they shouted,

  1102. but there

  1103. was no

  1104. response.

  1105. no one

  1106. answered,

  1107. and then

  1108. they danced

  1109. around the

  1110. altar they

  1111. had made.

  1112. They're simply

  1113. just trying to

  1114. get their

  1115. God's

  1116. attention,

  1117. and when

  1118. their God

  1119. doesn't

  1120. answer,

  1121. then they

  1122. just up

  1123. the performance,

  1124. don't they?

  1125. Verse 28.

  1126. They get

  1127. more excited.

  1128. They shouted

  1129. louder,

  1130. and then they

  1131. flashed

  1132. themselves with

  1133. swords and

  1134. spears,

  1135. and cut

  1136. themselves

  1137. until their

  1138. blood

  1139. flowed.

  1140. Now isn't

  1141. that what we

  1142. think God

  1143. sometimes demands

  1144. of us?

  1145. If I pray

  1146. enough,

  1147. if I'm

  1148. ecstatic

  1149. enough in my

  1150. worship,

  1151. then God

  1152. will hear me

  1153. and God

  1154. will answer

  1155. me.

  1156. If I

  1157. serve more,

  1158. if I

  1159. sacrifice

  1160. more,

  1161. if I

  1162. give more

  1163. money and

  1164. give more

  1165. of my

  1166. time,

  1167. if I

  1168. stop doing

  1169. bad things

  1170. and start

  1171. doing good

  1172. things,

  1173. then God

  1174. will see

  1175. my

  1176. performance

  1177. and he'll

  1178. respond to

  1179. me and

  1180. he'll

  1181. bless me.

  1182. Maybe we

  1183. don't believe

  1184. in this

  1185. religious God

  1186. at all,

  1187. and we've

  1188. got our

  1189. own kind

  1190. of God

  1191. and we're

  1192. striving

  1193. after money

  1194. and success

  1195. and work

  1196. and all

  1197. that does

  1198. is just

  1199. demand more

  1200. and more

  1201. of our

  1202. performance

  1203. and do

  1204. more and

  1205. work harder

  1206. and give

  1207. more of

  1208. your time

  1209. and leave

  1210. your family

  1211. behind and

  1212. just go and

  1213. do your

  1214. own thing.

  1215. And then

  1216. things will

  1217. be good.

  1218. But all

  1219. we're doing

  1220. is cutting

  1221. ourselves like

  1222. the prophets.

  1223. We end up

  1224. killing ourselves

  1225. by our

  1226. performances.

  1227. In some

  1228. cases,

  1229. literally

  1230. working

  1231. ourselves

  1232. to death.

  1233. and we

  1234. try and

  1235. do so

  1236. much.

  1237. If only

  1238. I could

  1239. pray more

  1240. and read

  1241. my Bible

  1242. more,

  1243. then God

  1244. will bless

  1245. me and

  1246. do good

  1247. things for

  1248. me.

  1249. You see,

  1250. the true God

  1251. does not

  1252. answer us

  1253. or respond

  1254. to us

  1255. on the

  1256. basis

  1257. of our

  1258. performance.

  1259. That's

  1260. not how

  1261. God

  1262. works.

  1263. We're not

  1264. singing our

  1265. songs here

  1266. today and

  1267. doing what

  1268. we're doing

  1269. in the hope

  1270. that God

  1271. is going

  1272. to listen

  1273. to me.

  1274. So how

  1275. does God

  1276. respond to

  1277. us?

  1278. Well,

  1279. it's not

  1280. performance.

  1281. Look at

  1282. how Elijah

  1283. comes.

  1284. Verse 30.

  1285. Then Elijah

  1286. said to

  1287. all the

  1288. people,

  1289. come here

  1290. to me.

  1291. They came

  1292. to him

  1293. and he

  1294. repaired

  1295. the altar

  1296. of the

  1297. Lord which

  1298. had been

  1299. torn down.

  1300. Verse 32.

  1301. With the

  1302. stones he

  1303. built an

  1304. altar in

  1305. the name

  1306. of the

  1307. Lord.

  1308. The altar

  1309. of the

  1310. Lord was

  1311. the way

  1312. God had

  1313. prescribed

  1314. for people

  1315. to come

  1316. to him.

  1317. You see,

  1318. to turn

  1319. away from

  1320. God to

  1321. other

  1322. gods,

  1323. well,

  1324. it would

  1325. mean death

  1326. and separation

  1327. from God.

  1328. It would

  1329. mean punishment.

  1330. So through

  1331. the sacrifice

  1332. on the

  1333. altar,

  1334. reconciliation

  1335. took place.

  1336. The people

  1337. could be

  1338. reconciled

  1339. to God.

  1340. Look at

  1341. Elijah's

  1342. prayer,

  1343. verse 37.

  1344. Answer me,

  1345. Lord,

  1346. answer me,

  1347. so these

  1348. people will

  1349. know that

  1350. you,

  1351. Lord,

  1352. are God

  1353. and that

  1354. you are

  1355. turning

  1356. their hearts

  1357. back again.

  1358. Then the

  1359. fire of

  1360. the Lord

  1361. fell and

  1362. burned up

  1363. the sacrifice.

  1364. Do you

  1365. see what's

  1366. going on

  1367. here?

  1368. As the

  1369. fire came,

  1370. the fire

  1371. fell on

  1372. the sacrifice.

  1373. The fire

  1374. should have

  1375. fallen on

  1376. the people,

  1377. instead it

  1378. falls on

  1379. the sacrifice.

  1380. You see,

  1381. sacrifice is

  1382. what is

  1383. required to

  1384. know the

  1385. true God.

  1386. Something or

  1387. someone must

  1388. take our

  1389. place.

  1390. Either the

  1391. people are

  1392. going to

  1393. burn up

  1394. or the

  1395. sacrifice

  1396. burns up.

  1397. And isn't

  1398. that the

  1399. same for

  1400. us?

  1401. Sacrifice

  1402. must be

  1403. made if

  1404. we are to

  1405. know and

  1406. enjoy the

  1407. true God.

  1408. But here's

  1409. the point.

  1410. It's not

  1411. our sacrifice.

  1412. It's God's

  1413. sacrifice.

  1414. You see,

  1415. the true

  1416. God,

  1417. who's

  1418. spoken,

  1419. who did

  1420. all of

  1421. these things,

  1422. came to

  1423. us in the

  1424. person of

  1425. Jesus Christ.

  1426. As Jesus

  1427. walked his

  1428. life on

  1429. the earth,

  1430. people pointed

  1431. and said,

  1432. there's God.

  1433. He did

  1434. what only

  1435. God could

  1436. do.

  1437. But not

  1438. only was

  1439. he God,

  1440. he came to

  1441. be the

  1442. sacrifice for

  1443. us.

  1444. He climbed

  1445. the mountain

  1446. to the

  1447. mountain of

  1448. crucifixion.

  1449. He laid

  1450. down his

  1451. life on

  1452. the altar

  1453. of the

  1454. cross and

  1455. the fire

  1456. from heaven

  1457. fell on

  1458. him.

  1459. The

  1460. judgment of

  1461. God fell

  1462. on Christ.

  1463. Christ took

  1464. the punishment

  1465. that we

  1466. deserve for

  1467. rejecting him

  1468. as the one

  1469. and only

  1470. true God.

  1471. The

  1472. separation

  1473. that we

  1474. deserve for

  1475. ignoring God

  1476. and living

  1477. life on

  1478. our own

  1479. way.

  1480. Christ took

  1481. the blame

  1482. for that.

  1483. The fire

  1484. should fall

  1485. on us.

  1486. But God

  1487. takes the

  1488. fire for

  1489. us when

  1490. Christ died

  1491. on the

  1492. cross.

  1493. The wrath,

  1494. the judgment

  1495. of God

  1496. fell on

  1497. him.

  1498. You see,

  1499. the true

  1500. God does

  1501. not demand

  1502. our performance.

  1503. The true

  1504. God gives

  1505. himself for

  1506. us in

  1507. sacrifice.

  1508. sacrifice.

  1509. He gives

  1510. his life

  1511. for us.

  1512. So what

  1513. does this

  1514. God demand

  1515. of us?

  1516. It's not

  1517. performance.

  1518. It's not

  1519. sacrifice

  1520. because God

  1521. did the

  1522. sacrifice.

  1523. The only

  1524. way to

  1525. come to

  1526. God is in

  1527. repentance.

  1528. Verse 37,

  1529. which is

  1530. really the

  1531. key to this

  1532. whole section.

  1533. look at

  1534. his prayer.

  1535. Answer me,

  1536. Lord,

  1537. answer me,

  1538. so these

  1539. people will

  1540. know that

  1541. you,

  1542. Lord,

  1543. are God

  1544. and that

  1545. you are

  1546. turning their

  1547. hearts back

  1548. again.

  1549. When we

  1550. look at

  1551. the God

  1552. who sacrificed

  1553. himself for

  1554. me,

  1555. who gave

  1556. his life

  1557. for me,

  1558. then the

  1559. only right

  1560. response is

  1561. to turn

  1562. our hearts

  1563. back again.

  1564. That's what

  1565. repentance is.

  1566. Repentance

  1567. means turning

  1568. from going

  1569. one way

  1570. and turning

  1571. to going

  1572. the other

  1573. way.

  1574. Turning our

  1575. backs on

  1576. the things

  1577. that we

  1578. long for

  1579. and the

  1580. things we

  1581. fear losing.

  1582. And instead

  1583. we run to

  1584. the true

  1585. God who

  1586. gives us

  1587. what we've

  1588. always needed

  1589. and that

  1590. we can

  1591. never lose.

  1592. The God

  1593. who made

  1594. us and

  1595. who loves

  1596. us and

  1597. provides for

  1598. us.

  1599. The God

  1600. who listens

  1601. to us.

  1602. We don't

  1603. have to

  1604. shout and

  1605. make a lot

  1606. of noise

  1607. for God

  1608. to listen.

  1609. He delights

  1610. in listening

  1611. to his

  1612. children.

  1613. The only

  1614. way we

  1615. will ever

  1616. turn our

  1617. hearts back

  1618. to God

  1619. is to

  1620. gaze in

  1621. wonder,

  1622. not at the

  1623. altar on

  1624. Mount Carmel,

  1625. but to

  1626. look at the

  1627. Mount of

  1628. Crucifixion

  1629. where Jesus

  1630. Christ,

  1631. the God

  1632. man,

  1633. died for

  1634. us.

  1635. To gaze

  1636. in wonder

  1637. and look at

  1638. the sacrifice

  1639. of Jesus

  1640. who died

  1641. for me,

  1642. who gave

  1643. his life

  1644. for me,

  1645. so that

  1646. we might

  1647. know and

  1648. enjoy this

  1649. God.

  1650. Where fire

  1651. no longer

  1652. burns,

  1653. but grace

  1654. and mercy

  1655. and love

  1656. and generosity

  1657. and kindness

  1658. and compassion

  1659. and eternal

  1660. treasures to

  1661. come are

  1662. all ours

  1663. because of

  1664. what he did

  1665. for us.

  1666. Who is

  1667. your God?

  1668. We must

  1669. follow our

  1670. God,

  1671. but be very

  1672. careful.

  1673. The God,

  1674. the true

  1675. God,

  1676. is the one

  1677. who gave

  1678. his life

  1679. for you.

  1680. to ignore

  1681. that

  1682. is to put

  1683. our place

  1684. self

  1685. in the

  1686. place of

  1687. the fire.

  1688. Or will

  1689. we instead

  1690. receive that

  1691. forgiveness,

  1692. that welcome

  1693. and know

  1694. him and

  1695. enjoy him,

  1696. the God

  1697. who delights

  1698. in us.

  1699. Let's pray

  1700. together.

  1701. Let's pray

  1702. together.

  1703. Let's pray

  1704. together.

  1705. Let's pray

  1706. together.

  1707. Let's pray

  1708. together.

  1709. Let's pray
