  1. So, 1 Kings 19 is on page 360 in the Church Bibles.

  2. So, chapter 19, starting in verse 1.

  3. Now, Ahab told Jezebel everything Elijah had done, and how he had killed all the prophets with the sword.

  4. So Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah to say,

  5. May the gods deal with me, be it ever so severely, if by this time tomorrow I do not make your life like that of one of them.

  6. Elijah was afraid and ran for his life.

  7. When he came to Beersheba in Judah, he left his servant there, while he himself went a day's journey into the wilderness.

  8. He came to a broom bush, sat down under it, and prayed that he might die.

  9. I have had enough, Lord, he said.

  10. Take my life.

  11. I am no better than my ancestors.

  12. Then he lay down under the bush and fell asleep.

  13. All at once an angel touched him and said, Get up and eat.

  14. He looked around, and there by his head was some bread, baked over hot coals and a jar of water.

  15. He ate and drank and then lay down again.

  16. The angel of the Lord came back a second time and touched him and said,

  17. Get up and eat, for the journey is too much for you.

  18. So he got up and ate and drank.

  19. Strengthened by that food, he traveled for forty days and forty nights until he reached Horeb, the mountain of God.

  20. There he went into a cave and spent the night.

  21. And the word of the Lord came to him.

  22. What are you doing here, Elijah?

  23. He replied, I have been very zealous for the Lord God Almighty.

  24. The Israelites have rejected your covenant, torn down your altars, and put your prophets to death with the sword.

  25. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me too.

  26. The Lord said, Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.

  27. Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord.

  28. But the Lord was not in the wind.

  29. After the wind, there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake.

  30. After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire.

  31. And after the fire came a gentle whisper.

  32. When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave.

  33. Then a voice said to him, What are you doing here, Elijah?

  34. He replied, I have been very zealous for the Lord God Almighty.

  35. The Israelites have rejected your covenant, torn down your altars, and put your prophets to death with the sword.

  36. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me too.

  37. The Lord said to him, Go back the way you came, and go to the desert of Damascus.

  38. When you get there, anoint Heziel king of Aram.

  39. Also anoint Jehu son of Nimshi king of Israel.

  40. And anoint Elisha son of Shaphat from Abel-Moholah to succeed you as prophet.

  41. Jehu will put to death any who escape the word of Heziel.

  42. And Elisha will put to death any who escape the sword of Jehu.

  43. Yet I reserve seven thousand in Israel, all whose knees have not bowed down to Baal,

  44. and whose mouths have not kissed him.

  45. Pens, notes, anybody?

  46. Everybody?

  47. So previous talks from 1 Kings can be found on the church website.

  48. I encourage you to look in there and listen if you've missed anything.

  49. And the purpose of our home groups, yes, it's there to encourage.

  50. And one of the good things about it is we can follow up with anything that we've looked at on a Sunday morning.

  51. So questions that arise, things we want to discuss and share, we can do that.

  52. So, yeah, as we go through this morning's talk, if there's things that you want to write down and come back on,

  53. bring those questions to home group and let's discuss them and let's talk them out together.

  54. Thank you.

  55. Let's pray.

  56. Father, your word has promised that when your word goes out, it will not return void,

  57. but will accomplish the purpose for which you have sent it.

  58. So we humbly submit ourselves to your word and pray that it will accomplish its purpose in each of our lives,

  59. within our families,

  60. and within us as a church family.

  61. Do your work.

  62. We ask this for your glory.

  63. Amen.

  64. Well, this book, the Bible that we have just read together and that you're holding in your hands,

  65. how would you describe it?

  66. How would you describe God's word?

  67. Well, Charles Spurgeon was a famous preacher,

  68. and in one talk, he described God's word.

  69. He said it's like a lion.

  70. This is what he said.

  71. I do not know whether you can see that lion.

  72. A number of persons advanced to attack him,

  73. while a host of us would defend him.

  74. Pardon me if I offer a quiet suggestion.

  75. Open the door and let the lion out.

  76. He will take care of himself.

  77. The word of God is like a lion.

  78. In other words, we do not need to defend God's word.

  79. We just need to let God's word loose.

  80. You see, God's word will always prevail.

  81. People may attack it.

  82. Oh, it's irrelevant.

  83. It's outdated.

  84. It's backward.

  85. Nobody believes that stuff anymore.

  86. Why are you reading that book?

  87. Governments may try and ban it,

  88. making it illegal to own a copy of God's word,

  89. or punished if you preach its message.

  90. Well, despite all the attacks,

  91. God's word is like a lion.

  92. It will defend itself.

  93. God's word will always prevail.

  94. No one and nothing can stop the word of God doing its work.

  95. Well, in 1 Kings 19,

  96. the lion has been let loose.

  97. God's word is at work,

  98. and despite all the attacks,

  99. God's word will prevail.

  100. First,

  101. the word of God is always opposed.

  102. The word of God is always opposed.

  103. Have a look back at chapter 18.

  104. Mount Carmel,

  105. that great event,

  106. had been the highlight so far.

  107. Remember,

  108. there were 450 prophets of Baal

  109. versus one prophet of God.

  110. The prophets of Baal were to call out

  111. and to cry down to their gods

  112. for fire to come.

  113. But in verse 29,

  114. we read,

  115. there was no response,

  116. no one answered,

  117. no one paid attention.

  118. And then,

  119. the one prophet,

  120. Elijah prayed.

  121. Verse 38,

  122. Then the fire of the Lord fell

  123. and burned up the sacrifice,

  124. the wood,

  125. the stones,

  126. and the soil,

  127. and also licked up the water in the trench.

  128. And when all the people saw this,

  129. they fell down prostrate and cried,

  130. The Lord,

  131. He is God.

  132. The Lord,

  133. He is God.

  134. Then Elijah commanded them,

  135. Seize the prophets of Baal.

  136. Don't let anyone get away.

  137. They seized them

  138. and Elijah had them brought down

  139. to the Kishon Valley

  140. and slaughtered there.

  141. Judgment on the false prophets

  142. for leading God's people away

  143. from God's word.

  144. It was a no contest.

  145. God had won.

  146. Everyone would now show up at church

  147. praising God,

  148. right?

  149. Well,

  150. despite the evidence,

  151. not everyone was willing to bow

  152. to the one true God.

  153. There were those

  154. who were still opposed

  155. to God's word.

  156. Look at verse 1,

  157. chapter 19,

  158. verse 1.

  159. Now Ahab,

  160. he was the king of Israel,

  161. told Jezebel,

  162. his wife,

  163. everything Elijah had done

  164. and how he had killed

  165. all the prophets

  166. with the sword.

  167. So Jezebel sent a messenger

  168. to Elijah to say,

  169. May the gods deal with me,

  170. be it ever so severely,

  171. if by this time tomorrow

  172. I do not make your life

  173. like one of them.

  174. Now let's remember,

  175. Elijah is God's prophet.

  176. The prophet was God's mouthpiece.

  177. God spoke his word

  178. through the prophet.

  179. So to put an assassination order

  180. on Elijah

  181. was a full-on attack

  182. against God's word.

  183. Put a bullet in Elijah's head,

  184. you kept God silent.

  185. Now this is really

  186. nothing new, is it?

  187. God's word has

  188. and is always undermined.

  189. While every other voice

  190. is to be heard,

  191. God's voice

  192. is to be silenced.

  193. We don't need God

  194. telling us how to live

  195. or what to do.

  196. We know what's best.

  197. Keep God's word

  198. out of the schools,

  199. restricted in our national debates,

  200. close the Bible,

  201. don't open it.

  202. Now the reality is,

  203. if you stand up

  204. or speak out

  205. for the truth

  206. of God's word,

  207. you too

  208. will become a target.

  209. You will be a marked person.

  210. It mightn't be

  211. a crazy Jezebel

  212. who's vying for your blood,

  213. but you will be told

  214. by your boss,

  215. no religious talk in here.

  216. keep those views

  217. to yourself,

  218. please.

  219. Or you will find

  220. that you are no longer

  221. liked on Facebook

  222. or followed on Twitter.

  223. And that can be

  224. really hard.

  225. You see,

  226. speaking the truth

  227. of God's word

  228. will be costly.

  229. You get hit enough times

  230. and you will want

  231. to give up.

  232. Get sidelined

  233. and rejected

  234. by your peers.

  235. You may find yourself

  236. doing an Elijah.

  237. Look at him

  238. in verse 4.

  239. He came to a broom bush,

  240. sat down under it

  241. and prayed

  242. that he might die.

  243. I have had enough,

  244. Lord,

  245. he said.

  246. Take my life.

  247. I am no better

  248. than my ancestors.

  249. Elijah

  250. is suffering

  251. with spiritual burnout.

  252. This guy's done.

  253. Do you ever feel like that

  254. as a Christian?

  255. No one takes

  256. what you believe seriously.

  257. Friends laugh.

  258. Family think

  259. that you've gone

  260. a bit extreme.

  261. And then we get

  262. the aggressive attack

  263. through the media

  264. which continues

  265. to take swipes

  266. at God talk.

  267. It's relentless.

  268. And some days

  269. it becomes too much

  270. and you want to stop.

  271. I've had enough,

  272. Lord.

  273. I can't do this

  274. witnessing thing anymore.

  275. No one believes.

  276. No one listens.

  277. Nobody wants

  278. to know about you.

  279. What's the point?

  280. The word of God

  281. is always

  282. opposed.

  283. Second,

  284. the word of God

  285. is always

  286. enough.

  287. You see,

  288. when the pressure

  289. comes on,

  290. God's word

  291. is what we all

  292. need.

  293. First,

  294. let's see

  295. how God's word

  296. meets

  297. our physical needs.

  298. Look at verse

  299. five.

  300. Elijah

  301. fell asleep.

  302. He lay down

  303. under the bush

  304. and all at once

  305. an angel

  306. touched him

  307. and said,

  308. get up

  309. and eat.

  310. He looked around

  311. and there by his head

  312. was some bread

  313. baked over

  314. hot coals

  315. and a jar

  316. of water.

  317. He ate

  318. and drank

  319. and then went

  320. back to sleep

  321. again.

  322. I love

  323. the practicality

  324. of God's word.

  325. Get up

  326. and eat.

  327. No sermon,

  328. no Bible study,

  329. just bread

  330. and water.

  331. You see,

  332. God knows,

  333. God understands,

  334. God sees

  335. what his servants

  336. go through

  337. and by this

  338. simple word

  339. of command

  340. to get up

  341. and eat

  342. is all met

  343. by God's

  344. provision

  345. to eat.

  346. sometimes

  347. I can be so

  348. focused

  349. on asking

  350. what

  351. I want

  352. from God

  353. that I forget

  354. to be thinking

  355. and thanking

  356. God for what

  357. I already have.

  358. Wanting God

  359. to do what

  360. I command,

  361. ready to bring

  362. all my complaints

  363. and all my

  364. discouragements

  365. rather than

  366. seeing

  367. all the goodness

  368. in his provision.

  369. So let me

  370. encourage you

  371. and myself

  372. as you

  373. munch your way

  374. through your

  375. cornflakes

  376. in the morning

  377. or your porridge

  378. or whatever you have

  379. and you sit

  380. there wondering

  381. how am I

  382. going to face

  383. another day?

  384. How am I

  385. going to go

  386. into work today?

  387. How am I

  388. going to face

  389. those people?

  390. Well,

  391. thank God

  392. for your daily

  393. bread

  394. and water.

  395. thank God

  396. that by

  397. his word

  398. he loves

  399. you.

  400. He provides

  401. for you.

  402. He gives

  403. to your

  404. physical needs.

  405. But we need

  406. more than

  407. just bread

  408. alone,

  409. don't we,

  410. to face

  411. the opposition.

  412. We need

  413. spiritual

  414. nourishment.

  415. God's word

  416. comes to

  417. Elijah

  418. again.

  419. Verse 7.

  420. The angel

  421. of the

  422. Lord

  423. came back

  424. a second

  425. time,

  426. touched

  427. Elijah

  428. and said,

  429. get up

  430. and eat

  431. for the

  432. journey

  433. is too

  434. much for

  435. you.

  436. Now,

  437. Elijah

  438. isn't so

  439. much

  440. running

  441. away.

  442. Elijah

  443. is on

  444. a journey.

  445. Now,

  446. I'm not

  447. sure

  448. if this

  449. has all

  450. been planned

  451. by Elijah

  452. that he's

  453. kind of

  454. worked out

  455. all the

  456. steps or

  457. not.

  458. All we

  459. know,

  460. if you

  461. look back

  462. in verse

  463. 3,

  464. Elijah

  465. was afraid

  466. or can

  467. be translated,

  468. Elijah

  469. saw what

  470. was going

  471. on.

  472. He saw

  473. what was

  474. ahead.

  475. He saw

  476. what Jezebel

  477. was up

  478. to and

  479. he ran

  480. for his

  481. life.

  482. His life

  483. is in

  484. danger

  485. so he's

  486. done the

  487. sensible

  488. thing

  489. and he's

  490. got out

  491. of town.

  492. But where's

  493. he off

  494. to?

  495. Well,

  496. it seems

  497. that God's

  498. word is

  499. directing

  500. his every

  501. step.

  502. Look at

  503. verse 8.

  504. So he

  505. got up

  506. and ate

  507. and drank

  508. strengthened

  509. by that

  510. food.

  511. He

  512. travelled

  513. for 40

  514. days

  515. and 40

  516. nights

  517. until he

  518. reached

  519. Horeb,

  520. the

  521. mountain

  522. of God.

  523. Now,

  524. Bible

  525. readers

  526. will

  527. remember

  528. Horeb,

  529. sometimes

  530. called

  531. Mount

  532. Sinai.

  533. That's

  534. why it's

  535. called

  536. the

  537. mountain

  538. of God,

  539. the

  540. mountain

  541. that

  542. Moses

  543. had

  544. climbed

  545. to

  546. meet

  547. with

  548. God.

  549. Mount

  550. Horeb

  551. is

  552. where

  553. God

  554. spoke

  555. to

  556. Moses

  557. and

  558. revealed

  559. himself

  560. to

  561. Moses

  562. and gave

  563. the law

  564. and the

  565. commands

  566. to

  567. Moses.

  568. You see,

  569. Elijah was

  570. spiritually

  571. done,

  572. wasn't he?

  573. Look at

  574. him here.

  575. He's

  576. sitting under

  577. the broom

  578. tree.

  579. I've

  580. had

  581. enough,

  582. Lord.

  583. So God

  584. in his

  585. grace

  586. provides

  587. food.

  588. But God

  589. knows that

  590. he needs

  591. more than

  592. just bread

  593. alone.

  594. Elijah

  595. needs

  596. spiritual

  597. nourishment.

  598. And by

  599. taking

  600. Elijah

  601. to

  602. Horeb,

  603. God

  604. is

  605. reminding

  606. Elijah

  607. and us

  608. that we

  609. are

  610. ultimately

  611. fed

  612. and

  613. strengthened

  614. by an

  615. encounter

  616. with the

  617. living God

  618. who speaks

  619. to us

  620. through his

  621. word.

  622. Just as

  623. God had

  624. said to

  625. Moses

  626. all the

  627. years

  628. before,

  629. man

  630. doesn't

  631. live on

  632. bread

  633. alone,

  634. but on

  635. every word

  636. that comes

  637. from the

  638. mouth of

  639. the Lord.

  640. You see,

  641. God knows

  642. our needs.

  643. We need

  644. the nourishment

  645. of a good

  646. meal,

  647. God's

  648. generous

  649. provision.

  650. But how

  651. much more

  652. do we need

  653. to be

  654. nourished

  655. by the

  656. word of

  657. God?

  658. It will

  659. feed you.

  660. It will

  661. grow you.

  662. It will

  663. strengthen

  664. you.

  665. It will

  666. give to

  667. you all

  668. that you

  669. need to

  670. keep going

  671. in life

  672. as a

  673. Christian

  674. and to

  675. go on

  676. serving

  677. him

  678. amongst

  679. all the

  680. opposition

  681. and all

  682. the rejection

  683. of God's

  684. word.

  685. So,

  686. the word

  687. of God

  688. is always

  689. enough.

  690. Third,

  691. the word

  692. of God

  693. will always

  694. sustain.

  695. not

  696. surprisingly,

  697. God

  698. begins to

  699. nourish

  700. Elijah

  701. spiritually.

  702. Look at

  703. verse 9,

  704. the second

  705. part of

  706. verse 9.

  707. And the

  708. word of

  709. the Lord

  710. came to

  711. him.

  712. What are

  713. you doing

  714. here,

  715. Elijah?

  716. Now,

  717. God knows

  718. why

  719. Elijah

  720. is there.

  721. It's not

  722. a surprise.

  723. God knows

  724. what has

  725. been going

  726. on.

  727. He's been

  728. directing

  729. his steps.

  730. He simply

  731. asks Elijah

  732. or invites

  733. Elijah,

  734. what are you

  735. doing here?

  736. Tell me,

  737. Elijah,

  738. what's going

  739. on?

  740. You see,

  741. God is not

  742. some distant,

  743. impersonal being

  744. who's immune

  745. to the struggles

  746. and the hardships

  747. that we go

  748. through.

  749. God is

  750. desperately

  751. concerned

  752. about us

  753. and his

  754. word invites

  755. us,

  756. talk to

  757. me.

  758. Tell me

  759. what's

  760. going on.

  761. What's

  762. your trouble?

  763. Verse 10,

  764. Elijah

  765. replied,

  766. well,

  767. I've been

  768. very zealous

  769. for the

  770. Lord God

  771. Almighty.

  772. The

  773. Israelites

  774. have rejected

  775. your covenant,

  776. torn down

  777. your altars

  778. and put

  779. your prophets

  780. to death

  781. with the

  782. sword

  783. and I'm

  784. the only

  785. one left

  786. and now

  787. they are

  788. trying to

  789. kill me

  790. too.

  791. That's

  792. my concern,

  793. Lord.

  794. All this

  795. preaching,

  796. all this

  797. witnessing,

  798. all this

  799. speaking of

  800. God's word,

  801. it's really

  802. not working.

  803. I've done

  804. what you

  805. commanded,

  806. but nobody

  807. seems interested.

  808. I'm longing

  809. and praying

  810. that people

  811. turn back

  812. to you,

  813. but no one

  814. believes.

  815. no one

  816. listens to

  817. your word.

  818. People say

  819. they're going

  820. to come to

  821. the Children's

  822. Rock,

  823. but they're

  824. not coming.

  825. People say

  826. they're going

  827. to come to

  828. Christianity

  829. Explored,

  830. but they

  831. don't.

  832. In fact,

  833. it seems like

  834. I'm the only

  835. one who seems

  836. to be hanging

  837. in here.

  838. Nobody

  839. listens,

  840. nobody wants

  841. to know.

  842. don't you

  843. love the

  844. way God's

  845. word invites

  846. us to

  847. talk with

  848. the sovereign

  849. king of

  850. the universe?

  851. What are

  852. you doing

  853. here?

  854. Just tell

  855. me what's

  856. going on.

  857. What's on

  858. your heart?

  859. What's

  860. troubling you

  861. as my

  862. servant

  863. today?

  864. he is

  865. deeply

  866. concerned.

  867. Tell him

  868. what is

  869. going on.

  870. Well,

  871. talking we

  872. can do,

  873. but there

  874. comes a

  875. time when

  876. we must

  877. listen.

  878. Verse

  879. 11.

  880. The

  881. Lord

  882. said,

  883. Go out

  884. and stand

  885. on the

  886. mountain

  887. in the

  888. presence

  889. of the

  890. Lord,

  891. for the

  892. Lord is

  893. about to

  894. pass by.

  895. Then a

  896. great and

  897. powerful wind

  898. tore the

  899. mountains

  900. apart and

  901. shattered the

  902. rocks before

  903. the Lord,

  904. but the

  905. Lord was

  906. not in

  907. the wind.

  908. After the

  909. wind,

  910. there was

  911. an earthquake,

  912. but the

  913. Lord was

  914. not in

  915. the

  916. earthquake.

  917. After the

  918. earthquake came

  919. a fire,

  920. but the

  921. Lord was

  922. not in

  923. the fire.

  924. And after

  925. the fire

  926. came a

  927. gentle

  928. whisper.

  929. When

  930. Elijah heard

  931. it, he

  932. pulled his

  933. cloak over

  934. his face and

  935. went out and

  936. stood at the

  937. mouth of the

  938. cave.

  939. This is a

  940. display.

  941. of awesome

  942. power.

  943. A mighty

  944. wind, a

  945. rumbling

  946. earthquake, a

  947. bolt of

  948. fire.

  949. But let's

  950. not get

  951. distracted by

  952. all this

  953. fireworks.

  954. Yes, this

  955. is the God

  956. who is over

  957. all creation,

  958. but this is

  959. just a mere

  960. sideshow to

  961. the all

  962. powerful God

  963. who speaks

  964. his word to

  965. his people.

  966. God's

  967. power is

  968. demonstrated

  969. supremely, not

  970. in the

  971. natural world,

  972. but in

  973. God's

  974. spoken

  975. word.

  976. Yes, we

  977. can admire

  978. the creator

  979. behind the

  980. sun, but

  981. God is not

  982. in the

  983. sun.

  984. The sun

  985. isn't going

  986. to speak to

  987. you.

  988. We are to

  989. listen to the

  990. word of God

  991. that spoke

  992. this very

  993. creation into

  994. existence and

  995. now speaks

  996. that word

  997. to his

  998. people.

  999. In other

  1000. words, there

  1001. is more

  1002. power in

  1003. the voice

  1004. of God

  1005. than the

  1006. shattering,

  1007. crushing,

  1008. bashing of

  1009. nature.

  1010. Look at the

  1011. end of

  1012. verse 13.

  1013. Then a

  1014. voice said

  1015. to him,

  1016. what are

  1017. you doing

  1018. here,

  1019. Elijah?

  1020. He replied,

  1021. well, I've

  1022. been very

  1023. zealous for

  1024. the Lord

  1025. Almighty.

  1026. The same

  1027. question is

  1028. asked, the

  1029. same answer

  1030. is exactly

  1031. given, but

  1032. what's

  1033. different?

  1034. Well, Elijah

  1035. is now

  1036. ready to

  1037. listen.

  1038. He is

  1039. ready to

  1040. hear the

  1041. voice of

  1042. God, to

  1043. stop looking

  1044. at what's

  1045. out there

  1046. and hearing

  1047. and listening

  1048. to what God

  1049. has to say.

  1050. Well, before

  1051. we hear what

  1052. God has to

  1053. say, I

  1054. think it

  1055. would be

  1056. good for

  1057. us to

  1058. ask that

  1059. question,

  1060. how am I,

  1061. how are we

  1062. going to

  1063. hear God's

  1064. voice?

  1065. Well, let

  1066. me say two

  1067. things.

  1068. First,

  1069. don't go

  1070. into the

  1071. woods of

  1072. Corabini and

  1073. sit down

  1074. amongst the

  1075. trees and

  1076. expect God

  1077. to speak to

  1078. you through

  1079. the shade

  1080. of light

  1081. that comes

  1082. through the

  1083. branches,

  1084. or go and

  1085. sit in some

  1086. rocks by the

  1087. edge of the

  1088. cliff and

  1089. expect to

  1090. hear a

  1091. thundering

  1092. voice.

  1093. Nature will

  1094. display God's

  1095. power and

  1096. beauty, but

  1097. it's not how

  1098. we hear

  1099. God.

  1100. We hear

  1101. God speak

  1102. to us as

  1103. we read

  1104. the Bible,

  1105. God's

  1106. written word.

  1107. God spoke

  1108. in an audible

  1109. voice, and

  1110. what God

  1111. spoke, he

  1112. commanded that

  1113. it would be

  1114. written down

  1115. for the

  1116. first hearers

  1117. of that

  1118. word and

  1119. for future

  1120. readers.

  1121. And here

  1122. we are,

  1123. hundreds,

  1124. thousands of

  1125. years after

  1126. this audible

  1127. voice spoke

  1128. to Elijah,

  1129. written down

  1130. and written

  1131. for us.

  1132. What we

  1133. have in the

  1134. Bible is

  1135. God's

  1136. sufficient

  1137. revelation

  1138. of himself.

  1139. In other

  1140. words, every

  1141. time we

  1142. open the

  1143. Bible, we

  1144. hear God

  1145. speak.

  1146. Now I know

  1147. the wind and

  1148. the earthquake

  1149. and the fire

  1150. sound rather

  1151. more spectacular,

  1152. doesn't it?

  1153. I know

  1154. we'd all

  1155. love to

  1156. climb up

  1157. the mountain

  1158. and hear a

  1159. gentle whisper

  1160. from God.

  1161. Who wouldn't

  1162. want that

  1163. experience?

  1164. But God's

  1165. written word

  1166. to us

  1167. has the

  1168. same power

  1169. as God's

  1170. audible voice

  1171. to Elijah.

  1172. We don't

  1173. need to go

  1174. looking for

  1175. God up

  1176. some mountain.

  1177. We don't

  1178. need to go

  1179. into some

  1180. special place

  1181. in creation

  1182. to meet

  1183. God.

  1184. We meet

  1185. God in

  1186. his word.

  1187. This is

  1188. where we

  1189. discover,

  1190. this is

  1191. where we

  1192. do business

  1193. with God.

  1194. Where he

  1195. hears us

  1196. and we

  1197. hear him.

  1198. And as

  1199. we open

  1200. his word,

  1201. his word

  1202. will sustain

  1203. you and

  1204. his word

  1205. will keep

  1206. you and

  1207. his word

  1208. will provide

  1209. the very

  1210. voice that

  1211. you need

  1212. in the

  1213. moment of

  1214. your trial

  1215. and struggle

  1216. and hardship

  1217. that you

  1218. are going

  1219. through.

  1220. So the

  1221. word of

  1222. God

  1223. always

  1224. sustains.

  1225. Fourth,

  1226. the word

  1227. of God

  1228. always

  1229. prevail.

  1230. God

  1231. says,

  1232. so what

  1233. does

  1234. God

  1235. have to

  1236. say?

  1237. Well,

  1238. thankfully,

  1239. we don't

  1240. have to

  1241. guess and

  1242. make up

  1243. what God

  1244. says.

  1245. Look at

  1246. verse 15.

  1247. The Lord

  1248. said to

  1249. Elijah,

  1250. go back

  1251. the way

  1252. you came

  1253. and go

  1254. to the

  1255. desert

  1256. of

  1257. Damascus.

  1258. Elijah,

  1259. I want

  1260. you to

  1261. go back

  1262. to where

  1263. unbelieving

  1264. Ahab and

  1265. Jezebel

  1266. are.

  1267. I want

  1268. you to

  1269. go back

  1270. to the

  1271. people who

  1272. are rejecting

  1273. God's

  1274. word,

  1275. who don't

  1276. want to

  1277. listen and

  1278. don't want

  1279. to know.

  1280. Well,

  1281. what does

  1282. God's

  1283. word have

  1284. to say?

  1285. Well,

  1286. two things

  1287. we need

  1288. to hear.

  1289. First,

  1290. God's

  1291. word

  1292. delivers

  1293. on

  1294. judgment.

  1295. Look at

  1296. the rest

  1297. of verse

  1298. 15.

  1299. When you

  1300. get there,

  1301. anoint

  1302. Haziel,

  1303. king over

  1304. Aram.

  1305. Also

  1306. anoint

  1307. Jehu,

  1308. son of

  1309. Nimshi,

  1310. king over

  1311. Israel,

  1312. and anoint

  1313. Elisha,

  1314. son of

  1315. Shaphat,

  1316. from Abel

  1317. Mahaloah,

  1318. to succeed

  1319. you as

  1320. prophets.

  1321. Why is

  1322. he appointing

  1323. all these

  1324. new leaders,

  1325. a king

  1326. for Israel,

  1327. a king

  1328. for Aram,

  1329. a kind

  1330. of foreign

  1331. nation,

  1332. and a

  1333. new prophet?

  1334. What's

  1335. he doing?

  1336. What's

  1337. all this

  1338. for?

  1339. Well,

  1340. verse 17

  1341. tells us,

  1342. Jehu

  1343. will put

  1344. to death

  1345. any who

  1346. escape

  1347. the sword

  1348. of Haziel,

  1349. and

  1350. Elisha

  1351. will put

  1352. to death

  1353. any who

  1354. escape

  1355. the sword

  1356. of Jehu.

  1357. It's a

  1358. word

  1359. of judgment.

  1360. Remember

  1361. what Elijah

  1362. had been

  1363. crying out

  1364. to God?

  1365. Have a

  1366. look back

  1367. in verse

  1368. 14.

  1369. Elijah

  1370. said,

  1371. I've been

  1372. very zealous

  1373. for the

  1374. Lord God

  1375. Almighty.

  1376. The

  1377. Israelites

  1378. have rejected

  1379. your covenant,

  1380. they have

  1381. torn down

  1382. your altars,

  1383. and they

  1384. have put

  1385. your prophets

  1386. to death

  1387. with the

  1388. sword.

  1389. They've

  1390. turned away

  1391. from God

  1392. who made

  1393. them and

  1394. who loves

  1395. them.

  1396. the God

  1397. who redeemed

  1398. them and

  1399. entered into

  1400. a relationship

  1401. with them.

  1402. The God

  1403. who's provided

  1404. for them

  1405. and kept

  1406. them and

  1407. given to

  1408. them everything

  1409. that they

  1410. need.

  1411. And what

  1412. have they

  1413. done in

  1414. return?

  1415. But they've

  1416. rejected God's

  1417. word, but

  1418. in rejecting

  1419. God's word,

  1420. they're rejecting

  1421. God himself.

  1422. And after

  1423. all these

  1424. years, God

  1425. says, well,

  1426. I am going

  1427. to reject

  1428. them.

  1429. justice

  1430. will be

  1431. done.

  1432. Judgment

  1433. will fall.

  1434. You see,

  1435. God will

  1436. not allow

  1437. us to go

  1438. on ignoring

  1439. him and

  1440. fighting him

  1441. if we

  1442. reject the

  1443. one true

  1444. God who

  1445. made us

  1446. and who

  1447. provides us

  1448. with all

  1449. that we

  1450. have.

  1451. And if

  1452. we insist

  1453. and persist

  1454. in pushing

  1455. God's word

  1456. out of our

  1457. lives and

  1458. have nothing

  1459. to do

  1460. with him,

  1461. well, he

  1462. says, I

  1463. will give

  1464. you what

  1465. you want

  1466. and what

  1467. you deserve.

  1468. Judgment

  1469. will come.

  1470. So he

  1471. delivers on

  1472. his judgment,

  1473. but he

  1474. also will

  1475. declare his

  1476. grace.

  1477. Verse 18,

  1478. God

  1479. will

  1480. fall on

  1481. those who

  1482. fight him,

  1483. but his

  1484. grace will

  1485. cover all

  1486. those who

  1487. will submit

  1488. to him.

  1489. God

  1490. isn't

  1491. cranky or

  1492. quick-tempered.

  1493. He's

  1494. patient.

  1495. He

  1496. loves us.

  1497. He

  1498. longs for

  1499. people to

  1500. turn to

  1501. him.

  1502. He

  1503. longs that

  1504. people will

  1505. bow to

  1506. him so

  1507. that they

  1508. might know

  1509. his grace,

  1510. experience

  1511. his forgiveness

  1512. and enjoy

  1513. God's

  1514. presence.

  1515. God

  1516. will

  1517. deliver on

  1518. judgment,

  1519. yet he

  1520. declares

  1521. his grace.

  1522. Don't

  1523. believe me?

  1524. Don't

  1525. believe this

  1526. word that

  1527. Elijah is

  1528. speaking,

  1529. that God

  1530. would actually

  1531. do this?

  1532. Well,

  1533. look and

  1534. listen to

  1535. the word

  1536. about the

  1537. cross where

  1538. Jesus died.

  1539. Because when

  1540. we look at

  1541. the cross and

  1542. listen to the

  1543. word of the

  1544. cross, it

  1545. tells us that

  1546. God takes

  1547. our rebellion

  1548. seriously and

  1549. judgment must

  1550. take place

  1551. because that

  1552. is what we

  1553. deserve.

  1554. But when we

  1555. look at the

  1556. cross and

  1557. when we

  1558. listen to the

  1559. word about

  1560. the cross, it

  1561. tells us that

  1562. God loves us

  1563. enormously,

  1564. that Jesus

  1565. dies in our

  1566. place, we

  1567. don't get

  1568. what we

  1569. deserve.

  1570. The cross

  1571. delivers on

  1572. judgment,

  1573. judgment.

  1574. But it's

  1575. not us.

  1576. So he

  1577. declares the

  1578. brilliance and

  1579. the greatness

  1580. of his grace

  1581. towards all

  1582. who will come

  1583. and bow

  1584. before him

  1585. and kiss

  1586. the sun.

  1587. We need to

  1588. listen carefully

  1589. to his

  1590. word.

  1591. God's

  1592. judgment will

  1593. fall on

  1594. those who

  1595. fight him.

  1596. But his

  1597. grace covers

  1598. all who

  1599. will submit

  1600. to him.

  1601. You see,

  1602. this is the

  1603. word that

  1604. will prevail.

  1605. The word of

  1606. the cross.

  1607. This is the

  1608. message Elijah

  1609. was to speak

  1610. and proclaim

  1611. and it's

  1612. the message

  1613. we are to

  1614. speak and

  1615. proclaim.

  1616. This

  1617. gospel message

  1618. is like

  1619. a lion.

  1620. We don't

  1621. need to

  1622. defend it.

  1623. We don't

  1624. need to

  1625. make excuses

  1626. for it.

  1627. We just

  1628. need to

  1629. let it

  1630. loose.

  1631. And

  1632. nothing

  1633. and no

  1634. one

  1635. will ever

  1636. hinder

  1637. or prevent

  1638. God's

  1639. word

  1640. doing

  1641. his

  1642. work

  1643. through

  1644. his

  1645. servants.

  1646. in the

  1647. midst of

  1648. hard times

  1649. and difficult

  1650. times.

  1651. God's

  1652. word will

  1653. prevail.

  1654. God's

  1655. word will

  1656. sustain you

  1657. and keep

  1658. you.

  1659. And

  1660. God's

  1661. word will

  1662. do his

  1663. work.

  1664. He will

  1665. display the

  1666. glory and

  1667. greatness of

  1668. his power

  1669. through his

  1670. word.

  1671. Let us

  1672. trust him

  1673. and let us

  1674. listen to

  1675. him.

  1676. Let's

  1677. pray.

  1678. Let's

  1679. pray.

  1680. Let's

  1681. pray.

  1682. Let's

  1683. pray.

  1684. Let's

  1685. pray.
