  1. It's a long chapter and we're going to cover it all, 43 verses, and it records a battle

  2. between King Ahab of Israel and Ben-Hadad, King of Aram or sometimes referred to as Syria.

  3. And so what we're going to do is we're going to take it in three parts.

  4. So I'm going to read a section and then we're going to look at it together, then we'll read

  5. another section, look at it, and we'll do that three times.

  6. And so we're going to read a bit at a time and look at it.

  7. So just a little bit different today.

  8. And again, if you've missed out on any of the talks, you can catch them all on the church

  9. website and have a look for them there.

  10. Thanks very much, Louise.

  11. So let's pray and then we will look at God's word together.

  12. Father, would you help us to see this morning the battle that we are in?

  13. God's word together.

  14. How you have won it for us so that we may walk in peace and not fear, that we may live trusting

  15. you, rejoicing in your victory and enjoying the blessings that flow to us.

  16. So Father, help us today.

  17. Work in our hearts, we pray.

  18. In Jesus' name.

  19. Amen.

  20. Well, the battle is about to start, so let's get straight into the action.

  21. First, how not to win a battle?

  22. How not to win a battle?

  23. Let's read verses 1 to 12 of 1 Kings 20.

  24. Now Ben-Hadad, king of Aram, mustered his entire army, accompanied by 32 kings, with all

  25. their horses and chariots.

  26. And he went up and besieged Samaria and attacked it.

  27. He sent messengers into the city to Ahab, king of Israel, saying, This is what Ben-Hadad says.

  28. Your silver and gold are mine, and the best of your wives and children are mine.

  29. The king of Israel answered, Well, just as you say, my lord the king, I and all I have

  30. are yours.

  31. The messengers came again and said, This is what Ben-Hadad says.

  32. I sent to demand your silver and gold, your wives and your children.

  33. But about this time tomorrow, I am going to send my officials to search your palace and

  34. the houses of your officials.

  35. They will seize everything you value and carry it away.

  36. The king of Israel summoned all the elders of the land and said to them, See how this man

  37. is looking for trouble?

  38. When he sent for my wives and my children and my silver and my gold, I didn't refuse him.

  39. The elders and all the people answered, Don't listen to him or agree to his demands.

  40. So he replied to Ben-Hadad's messengers, Tell my lord the king.

  41. Your servant will do all you demand the first time.

  42. But this demand I cannot meet.

  43. They left and took the answer back to Ben-Hadad.

  44. Then Ben-Hadad sent another messenger to Ahab, May the gods deal with me, be it ever so severely,

  45. if enough dust remains in Samaria to give each of my men a handful.

  46. The king of Israel answered, Tell him, one who puts on his armor should not boast like one who takes it off.

  47. Or as we might say, don't count your chickens before they hatch.

  48. Ben-Hadad heard this message while he and the kings were drinking in their tents.

  49. And he ordered his men, Prepare to attack.

  50. So they prepared to attack the city.

  51. Well, Ahab is under attack.

  52. What should he do?

  53. Well, despite Ahab's diplomacy, do you see it in verse 4?

  54. The king of Israel answered, Just as you say, my lord the king, I and all I have is yours.

  55. I don't want to fight.

  56. Please take it.

  57. Well, Ben-Hadad seems intent on having a fight.

  58. Verse 6.

  59. About this time tomorrow, I am going to send my officials to search your palace and the houses of your officials,

  60. and they will seize everything you value and carry it away.

  61. What should Ahab do?

  62. Well, let's remember who's attacking who.

  63. Ahab is king of Israel.

  64. God's people.

  65. Ben-Hadad, well, he was the enemy.

  66. Israel are God's people.

  67. And he has entered into a special relationship with them.

  68. He loves them.

  69. He's made a covenant with them.

  70. Promised to be his God and they are to be his people.

  71. Loyal and faithful to them.

  72. And Ahab is the king of God's people.

  73. Well, his role is to make sure they follow the Lord.

  74. That they obey him.

  75. And that they are equally committed to him.

  76. So what should Ahab do when he's being threatened?

  77. Well, what he should do and what he does are two very different things.

  78. First, the tragedy of forgetting.

  79. Look at verse 7.

  80. So Ben-Hadad with his 32 other kings are about to attack.

  81. What does he do?

  82. Verse 7.

  83. The king of Israel summoned all the elders of the land and said to them,

  84. See how this man is looking for trouble.

  85. What should I do?

  86. How am I going to win this battle?

  87. Now it seems wise, but it's actually very, very tragic.

  88. Not too long ago Ahab had witnessed first hand the power of God on Mount Carmel.

  89. Through the prophet Elijah, God had sent fire on the sacrifice.

  90. It was so powerful it burned up the sacrifice, the stones and the water.

  91. And the evidence was clear for everybody to see.

  92. God is the one and only true God.

  93. The God of Israel.

  94. The all-powerful God who made all things and controls all things.

  95. He is God.

  96. But sadly, with the threat of war, Ahab runs to his elders, his advisors, his military men.

  97. It seems Ahab is stubbornly forgetting who the true God is.

  98. So we have the tragedy of forgetting.

  99. And then the stupidity of pride.

  100. You see, after he's met with his elders and he's had a little pep talk,

  101. he feels a little bit more upbeat.

  102. A little bit of self-confidence never did anyone any harm.

  103. Right?

  104. Well, Ben-Hadad seems equally confident.

  105. Verse 10.

  106. He sent another messenger to Ahab.

  107. May the gods deal with me, be it ever so severely,

  108. if enough dust remains in Samaria to give each of my men a handful.

  109. I'm going to obliterate you, Ahab.

  110. I'm going to destroy you and your people and your cities from the face of the earth.

  111. Well, look at this for a slap-down response in verse 11.

  112. The king of Israel answered,

  113. Tell him,

  114. One who puts on his armour should not boast like one who takes it off.

  115. Bring it on, big bad Ben.

  116. You and your 32 kings don't scare me.

  117. Threaten me all you like.

  118. But you haven't won the battle yet.

  119. Well, it's a display of self-confident pride, isn't it?

  120. I can do this.

  121. An extra 32 kings?

  122. One king?

  123. I could take on 32 kings.

  124. I can win this.

  125. Now, we can look on and see the tragedy and stupidity of Ahab.

  126. But the question is,

  127. can we see this same kind of thinking in our own hearts?

  128. Don't we, too, try to live self-determined lives?

  129. Refusing to acknowledge God who is Lord over all?

  130. Arrogantly strutting our way through life as if we're sovereign over our lives and our world?

  131. Listen to what the Apostle James would have to say many years later.

  132. It's there on the screen.

  133. Now listen, you who say,

  134. Today or tomorrow we will go to this city or that city,

  135. spend a year there, move here, move there,

  136. carry on business, make money, take this job,

  137. say no to that job.

  138. Why? You do not even know what will happen tomorrow.

  139. What is your life?

  140. You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.

  141. Instead, you ought to say,

  142. if it is the Lord's will,

  143. we will live and do this or that.

  144. As it is, you boast in your arrogant schemes.

  145. All such boasting is evil.

  146. You see,

  147. I can be just like Ahab.

  148. This is my life.

  149. I can do it.

  150. I'm strong.

  151. I'm in control of my destiny.

  152. Nobody's going to tell me what to do.

  153. Well, forgetting who God is

  154. and making prideful boasts

  155. is never ever going to win the battle.

  156. Second,

  157. how the battle is won.

  158. How the battle is won.

  159. Verse 13 through to 30.

  160. Let's read this passage together.

  161. How the battle is won.

  162. Meanwhile,

  163. a prophet came to Ahab,

  164. king of Israel,

  165. and announced,

  166. this is what the Lord says.

  167. Do you see this vast army?

  168. I will give it into your hand today

  169. and then you will know that I am the Lord.

  170. But who will do this?

  171. Asked Ahab.

  172. The prophet replied,

  173. this is what the Lord says.

  174. The junior officers

  175. under the provincial commanders

  176. will do it.

  177. And who's going to start the battle?

  178. He asked.

  179. The prophet answered,

  180. you will.

  181. So Ahab summoned

  182. the 232 junior officers

  183. under the provincial commanders.

  184. Then he assembled

  185. the rest of the Israelites,

  186. 7,000 in all.

  187. They set out at noon

  188. while Ben-Hadad

  189. and the 32 kings

  190. allied with him

  191. were in their tents

  192. getting drunk.

  193. The junior officers

  194. under the provincial commanders

  195. went out first.

  196. Now Ben-Hadad

  197. had dispatched scouts

  198. who reported,

  199. men are advancing

  200. from Samaria.

  201. He said,

  202. if they've come out for peace,

  203. take them alive.

  204. If they've come out for war,

  205. take them alive.

  206. We're going to win this.

  207. No problem.

  208. The junior officers

  209. under the provincial commanders

  210. marched out of the city

  211. with the army behind them

  212. and each one

  213. struck down his opponent.

  214. At that,

  215. the Arameans fled

  216. with the Israelites

  217. in pursuit.

  218. But Ben-Hadad,

  219. king of Aram,

  220. escaped on horseback

  221. with some of his horsemen.

  222. The king of Israel

  223. advanced

  224. and overpowered

  225. the horses and chariots

  226. and inflicted heavy losses

  227. on the Arameans.

  228. afterwards,

  229. the prophet came

  230. to the king of Israel

  231. and said,

  232. strengthen your position

  233. and see what must be done

  234. because

  235. next spring

  236. the king of Aram

  237. will attack you

  238. again.

  239. Meanwhile,

  240. the officials

  241. of the king of Aram

  242. advised him,

  243. their gods

  244. are gods of the hills.

  245. That is why

  246. they were too strong

  247. for us.

  248. But if we fight them

  249. on the plains,

  250. surely we will be

  251. stronger than they.

  252. And do this.

  253. Remove all the kings

  254. from their commands

  255. and replace them

  256. with the officers.

  257. Get rid of them.

  258. They lost the first battle.

  259. Verse 25.

  260. You must also

  261. raise an army

  262. like the one

  263. you lost.

  264. Horse for horse.

  265. Chariot for chariot.

  266. So we can fight

  267. Israel on the plains.

  268. Then surely

  269. we will be

  270. stronger than they.

  271. He agreed with them

  272. and acted accordingly.

  273. The next spring,

  274. Ben-Hadad

  275. mustered the Arameans

  276. and went up to

  277. Aphek

  278. to fight

  279. against Israel.

  280. It was a valley

  281. just outside.

  282. When the Israelites

  283. also mustered

  284. and given

  285. their provisions,

  286. they marched out

  287. to meet them.

  288. The Israelites

  289. camped opposite them

  290. like two small

  291. flocks of goats

  292. while the Arameans

  293. covered the countryside.

  294. The man of God

  295. came up and told

  296. the king of Israel,

  297. this is what

  298. the Lord says,

  299. because the Arameans

  300. think the Lord

  301. is the God of the hills

  302. and not a God

  303. of the valleys,

  304. I will deliver

  305. this vast army

  306. into your hands

  307. and you will know

  308. that I am the Lord.

  309. For seven days

  310. they camped

  311. opposite each other

  312. and on the seventh day

  313. the battle was joined.

  314. The battle began.

  315. The Israelites

  316. inflicted

  317. a hundred thousand

  318. casualties

  319. on the Aramean

  320. foot soldiers

  321. in one day.

  322. The rest of them

  323. escaped to the city

  324. of Aphek

  325. where the wall

  326. collapsed

  327. on 27,000

  328. of them

  329. and Ben-Hadad

  330. fled

  331. to the city

  332. and hid

  333. in the inner room.

  334. Well, there's

  335. lots of blowing

  336. and blustering

  337. isn't there

  338. from these two kings?

  339. But with all

  340. the noise

  341. and all the threats

  342. there is only

  343. one voice

  344. that needs

  345. to be heard.

  346. verse 13

  347. Meanwhile

  348. or suddenly

  349. in the midst

  350. of all this

  351. threat of war

  352. a prophet

  353. came to Ahab

  354. king of Israel

  355. announced

  356. this

  357. is what

  358. the Lord says.

  359. If we're to see

  360. how the battle

  361. is won

  362. we need to

  363. listen

  364. to what

  365. God says.

  366. First

  367. it's a word

  368. of grace

  369. look at

  370. verse 13

  371. the end

  372. of verse 13

  373. he says

  374. do you see

  375. this vast army?

  376. I will give it

  377. into your hand

  378. today

  379. and then you

  380. will know

  381. that I am

  382. the Lord.

  383. It's the same

  384. as what happened

  385. when Ben-Hadad

  386. attacks a second

  387. time.

  388. Do you see it

  389. at the end

  390. of verse 28?

  391. I will deliver

  392. this vast army

  393. into your hands

  394. and you will know

  395. that I am the Lord.

  396. If the battle

  397. is going to be won

  398. God is going

  399. to do it.

  400. I will give it

  401. into your hand.

  402. I will deliver

  403. this vast army

  404. into your hands.

  405. You would think

  406. that after

  407. Ahab's behaviour

  408. and the way

  409. he's carried on

  410. in Mount Carmel

  411. you would think

  412. God would say

  413. right Ahab

  414. you're on your own.

  415. You're confident

  416. in your pride

  417. and in your boasting.

  418. Well off you go

  419. do it yourself.

  420. But that's not

  421. how God works.

  422. God doesn't act

  423. according to our behaviour

  424. or how good

  425. we are.

  426. He acts

  427. according to

  428. his grace.

  429. God intervenes.

  430. He takes

  431. the initiative

  432. and the battle

  433. is won

  434. because God

  435. says

  436. I will do it.

  437. Don't you find

  438. that incredible?

  439. Ahab has

  440. single handedly

  441. introduced

  442. Baal worship

  443. and led all

  444. the people

  445. away from God.

  446. He's ignored God.

  447. He's rejected God.

  448. Surely God

  449. should step away

  450. and leave him

  451. to his own devices.

  452. Yet God

  453. steps in

  454. and says

  455. I will fight

  456. the battle

  457. for you.

  458. Glorious

  459. intervening grace.

  460. But how

  461. does God

  462. actually win

  463. the battle?

  464. Well

  465. first

  466. God

  467. chooses

  468. the foolish

  469. things

  470. to shame

  471. the wise.

  472. He chooses

  473. the foolish

  474. things

  475. to shame

  476. the wise.

  477. Look at how

  478. this first

  479. battle is won

  480. in verse 14.

  481. Ahab's

  482. in a bit

  483. of a fluster.

  484. He says

  485. who's going

  486. to do it?

  487. Who's going

  488. to win

  489. this battle?

  490. The prophet

  491. replied

  492. this is what

  493. the Lord

  494. says.

  495. The junior

  496. officers

  497. under the

  498. provincial

  499. commanders

  500. will do it.

  501. Sorry?

  502. What did you

  503. say?

  504. The junior

  505. officers.

  506. I mean

  507. they're hardly

  508. out of college.

  509. They've never

  510. been in a battle.

  511. They don't even

  512. know how to

  513. throw a spear.

  514. How do they

  515. know what to

  516. do?

  517. They're not

  518. the kind

  519. of people

  520. you go

  521. to get

  522. and organize

  523. a fight.

  524. It all

  525. seems rather

  526. foolish.

  527. But to

  528. make sure

  529. we get

  530. the point

  531. the prophet

  532. of God

  533. keeps reminding

  534. us.

  535. Verse 15

  536. So Ahab

  537. summoned the

  538. 232

  539. junior

  540. officers

  541. under the

  542. provincial

  543. commanders.

  544. Verse 17

  545. The junior

  546. officers

  547. under the

  548. provincial

  549. commanders

  550. went out

  551. first.

  552. Verse 19

  553. The junior

  554. officers

  555. under the

  556. provincial

  557. commanders

  558. marched out

  559. of the

  560. city

  561. with the

  562. army

  563. behind

  564. them.

  565. I mean

  566. what's

  567. going to

  568. happen?

  569. Well

  570. verse 20

  571. And each

  572. one struck

  573. down his

  574. opponent.

  575. At that

  576. the Arameans

  577. fled with

  578. the Israelites

  579. in pursuit.

  580. Who would

  581. ever think

  582. a bunch

  583. of inexperienced

  584. officers

  585. could win

  586. a battle?

  587. It all

  588. sounds

  589. foolish

  590. but they

  591. did

  592. because it

  593. was a

  594. battle

  595. God said

  596. he would

  597. win.

  598. So he

  599. chooses

  600. foolish

  601. things

  602. but God

  603. also wins

  604. the battle

  605. because he

  606. chooses the

  607. weak things

  608. to shame

  609. the strong.

  610. Look at

  611. how the

  612. second battle

  613. is won

  614. in verse

  615. 26

  616. So Ben

  617. Hadad

  618. has kind

  619. of figured

  620. out that

  621. well

  622. you know

  623. we fought

  624. them up

  625. in the

  626. mountains

  627. they're

  628. too strong

  629. and the

  630. mountain

  631. gods

  632. are with

  633. them

  634. but let's

  635. get them

  636. down in

  637. the valleys

  638. and it's

  639. springtime

  640. because well

  641. it's neither

  642. too hot

  643. nor too

  644. cold

  645. there's

  646. plenty

  647. of food

  648. that's

  649. going to

  650. be the

  651. time to

  652. go to

  653. battle

  654. and we'll

  655. get new

  656. people on

  657. board

  658. and we'll

  659. be ready

  660. verse

  661. 26

  662. the next

  663. spring

  664. Ben

  665. Hadad

  666. mustered

  667. the

  668. Arameans

  669. and went

  670. up to

  671. Aphek

  672. to fight

  673. against

  674. Israel

  675. and when

  676. the

  677. Israelites

  678. were also

  679. mustered

  680. and given

  681. their

  682. provisions

  683. they marched

  684. out to

  685. meet them

  686. now picture

  687. picture what's

  688. going on

  689. here as

  690. they come

  691. down into

  692. the valley

  693. at one

  694. end you've

  695. got the

  696. Israelites

  697. and they

  698. look like

  699. two small

  700. flocks of

  701. goats

  702. and then

  703. over on

  704. the other

  705. side the

  706. Arameans

  707. they covered

  708. the whole

  709. countryside

  710. this is a

  711. battle of

  712. the few

  713. versus the

  714. many

  715. Israel army

  716. is small

  717. insignificant

  718. and weak

  719. Aram's army

  720. is great

  721. magnificent

  722. in its

  723. military

  724. power

  725. and strong

  726. paddy power

  727. isn't going to

  728. give you great

  729. odds for an

  730. Israel win

  731. in this

  732. are they

  733. nothing

  734. glamorous

  735. or spectacular

  736. about Israel's

  737. army

  738. but this is

  739. God's battle

  740. and he uses

  741. weak things

  742. to shame

  743. the strong

  744. verse 29

  745. so for seven

  746. days they

  747. camped opposite

  748. each other

  749. and on the

  750. seventh day

  751. the battle

  752. began

  753. the Israelites

  754. inflicted a

  755. hundred thousand

  756. casualties

  757. in one day

  758. the rest

  759. of them

  760. escaped to

  761. the city

  762. of Aphek

  763. where I

  764. guess they

  765. kind of

  766. crowded around

  767. the city

  768. and the

  769. walls came

  770. down and

  771. another

  772. twenty-seven

  773. thousand of

  774. them fell

  775. why does

  776. God work

  777. like this

  778. why does

  779. he take

  780. foolish

  781. things

  782. and weak

  783. things

  784. well we're

  785. told aren't

  786. we at the

  787. end of

  788. verse 13

  789. and it's

  790. also repeated

  791. at the

  792. end of

  793. verse 28

  794. because you

  795. will know

  796. that I

  797. am the

  798. Lord

  799. Lord

  800. I will

  801. take weak

  802. things

  803. I will

  804. take foolish

  805. things

  806. and I'm

  807. going to

  808. win the

  809. battle

  810. and then

  811. you will

  812. know that

  813. I am

  814. the

  815. Lord

  816. I will

  817. win the

  818. battle for

  819. you

  820. to prove

  821. to you

  822. that I

  823. am God

  824. and I'm

  825. in control

  826. of this

  827. world

  828. and you

  829. are not

  830. you see

  831. Ahab is

  832. faced with

  833. a question

  834. and so

  835. are we

  836. when faced

  837. with the

  838. battle

  839. who are

  840. we going

  841. to trust

  842. am I

  843. going to

  844. fight with

  845. my own

  846. wisdom

  847. am I

  848. going to

  849. fight in

  850. my own

  851. strength

  852. or am

  853. I going

  854. to trust

  855. the Lord

  856. am I

  857. going to

  858. get through

  859. life

  860. with this

  861. arrogant

  862. strutting

  863. around

  864. and saying

  865. I can

  866. manage

  867. I'm in

  868. control

  869. of my

  870. destiny

  871. I can

  872. do it

  873. you see

  874. as we

  875. journey

  876. through

  877. life

  878. we're

  879. in a

  880. battle

  881. but not

  882. a battle

  883. against

  884. Ben Hadad

  885. but a

  886. much greater

  887. battle

  888. against a

  889. greater

  890. enemy

  891. sin

  892. and

  893. Satan

  894. and because

  895. of our

  896. sin

  897. we are

  898. facing

  899. the

  900. consequences

  901. of sin

  902. judgment

  903. itself

  904. we are

  905. facing the

  906. results

  907. of what

  908. that judgment

  909. will be

  910. hell

  911. itself

  912. and how

  913. are we

  914. going to

  915. fight that

  916. kind of

  917. battle

  918. well

  919. we can

  920. fight on

  921. the basis

  922. of our

  923. pride

  924. I can

  925. do this

  926. we can

  927. do

  928. in

  929. Ahab

  930. or

  931. we can

  932. turn and

  933. look and

  934. trust in

  935. God's

  936. grace

  937. you see

  938. just as

  939. God had

  940. won the

  941. battle

  942. for Ahab

  943. it is

  944. telling us

  945. and pointing

  946. us to

  947. the fact

  948. that well

  949. God is

  950. the one

  951. who wins

  952. the battle

  953. for us

  954. on our

  955. behalf

  956. keep your

  957. finger in

  958. 1 Kings

    1 Kings 20 chapter mention

  959. chapter 20

  960. and have

  961. a look at

  962. 1 Corinthians

  963. it is on

  964. page 1144

  965. on page

  966. 1144

  967. 1 Corinthians

  968. chapter 18

  969. you see

  970. God won

  971. the battle

  972. for us

  973. supremely

  974. on the

  975. cross

  976. he doesn't

  977. invite us

  978. to come

  979. and take

  980. part in

  981. the battle

  982. but he

  983. simply

  984. presents it

  985. and portrays

  986. it to us

  987. to say

  988. watch

  989. watch and

  990. see what

  991. happens

  992. watch what

  993. takes place

  994. and then

  995. you will

  996. know that

  997. I am

  998. the Lord

  999. 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 1:18

  1000. 1 verse

  1001. 18

  1002. the message

  1003. of the

  1004. cross

  1005. is foolishness

  1006. to those

  1007. who are

  1008. perishing

  1009. but to

  1010. us who

  1011. are being

  1012. saved

  1013. it is

  1014. the power

  1015. of God

  1016. for it is

  1017. written I

  1018. will destroy

  1019. the wisdom

  1020. of the wise

  1021. the intelligence

  1022. of the

  1023. intelligence

  1024. I will

  1025. frustrate

  1026. down to

  1027. verse 25

  1028. still speaking

  1029. about the

  1030. cross

  1031. he says

  1032. for the

  1033. foolishness

  1034. of God

  1035. is wiser

  1036. than human

  1037. wisdom

  1038. and the

  1039. weakness

  1040. of God

  1041. is stronger

  1042. than human

  1043. strength

  1044. you see

  1045. to the

  1046. proud

  1047. and the

  1048. self-sufficient

  1049. the battle

  1050. that takes

  1051. place

  1052. on the

  1053. cross

  1054. is foolish

  1055. and weak

  1056. why would

  1057. you trust

  1058. a naked

  1059. bloodied

  1060. beaten up

  1061. crucified

  1062. and suffering

  1063. man called

  1064. Jesus

  1065. what can

  1066. he do

  1067. for you

  1068. well

  1069. through

  1070. Jesus

  1071. God won

  1072. the battle

  1073. didn't he

  1074. sin is

  1075. dealt with

  1076. as Christ

  1077. takes it

  1078. upon himself

  1079. Jesus

  1080. takes the

  1081. judgment

  1082. as it

  1083. falls on

  1084. him

  1085. he suffers

  1086. hell for

  1087. us

  1088. and it

  1089. is destroyed

  1090. and death

  1091. is defeated

  1092. watch

  1093. and see

  1094. you can't

  1095. win this

  1096. battle

  1097. but I

  1098. will do

  1099. it for

  1100. you

  1101. you

  1102. see

  1103. grace

  1104. humbles

  1105. us

  1106. it

  1107. says

  1108. to us

  1109. if you

  1110. want to

  1111. share

  1112. in the

  1113. battle's

  1114. victory

  1115. you need

  1116. to submit

  1117. to me

  1118. rather than

  1119. trust your

  1120. own wisdom

  1121. rather than

  1122. rely on your

  1123. own strength

  1124. rather than

  1125. do life

  1126. in your

  1127. own way

  1128. you need

  1129. to turn

  1130. to me

  1131. because

  1132. I am

  1133. the Lord

  1134. third

  1135. how is

  1136. Ahab

  1137. going to

  1138. respond

  1139. to all

  1140. of what

  1141. God

  1142. has done

  1143. for him

  1144. well

  1145. third

  1146. how to

  1147. exclude

  1148. yourself

  1149. from the

  1150. battle's

  1151. victory

  1152. how to

  1153. exclude

  1154. yourself

  1155. from the

  1156. battle's

  1157. victory

  1158. let's go

  1159. back to

  1160. 1 Kings

    1 Kings 20 chapter mention

  1161. chapter 20

  1162. and we'll

  1163. pick it up

  1164. in verse

  1165. 31

  1166. so

  1167. verse 31

  1168. his

  1169. officials

  1170. that's

  1171. Ben

  1172. Hadad's

  1173. officials

  1174. said to

  1175. him

  1176. look

  1177. we have

  1178. heard

  1179. that the

  1180. kings of

  1181. Israel

  1182. are

  1183. merciful

  1184. let us

  1185. go to

  1186. the king

  1187. of Israel

  1188. with sackcloth

  1189. round our

  1190. waist

  1191. and ropes

  1192. round our

  1193. heads

  1194. which was a

  1195. sign of

  1196. submission

  1197. you won

  1198. the battle

  1199. where your

  1200. servants

  1201. perhaps he

  1202. will spare

  1203. your life

  1204. wearing sackcloth

  1205. round their

  1206. waist and ropes

  1207. round their

  1208. heads they

  1209. went to the

  1210. king of

  1211. Israel and

  1212. said

  1213. your servant

  1214. Ben

  1215. Hadad says

  1216. please let

  1217. me live

  1218. the king

  1219. answered

  1220. is he still

  1221. alive

  1222. he is

  1223. my

  1224. brother

  1225. the men

  1226. took this

  1227. as a

  1228. good sign

  1229. and were

  1230. quick to

  1231. pick up

  1232. on his

  1233. word

  1234. yes

  1235. your

  1236. brother

  1237. Ben

  1238. Hadad

  1239. they said

  1240. go and

  1241. get him

  1242. the king

  1243. said

  1244. when Ben

  1245. Hadad

  1246. came out

  1247. Ahab

  1248. bought him

  1249. up into

  1250. his chariot

  1251. I will

  1252. return the

  1253. cities my

  1254. father took

  1255. from your

  1256. father Ben

  1257. Hadad

  1258. offered

  1259. and you

  1260. may set

  1261. up your

  1262. own market

  1263. areas in

  1264. Damascus

  1265. where we

  1266. live and

  1267. just as

  1268. my father

  1269. did in

  1270. Samaria

  1271. Ahab

  1272. said

  1273. on the

  1274. basis of

  1275. a treaty

  1276. I will

  1277. set you

  1278. free

  1279. so he

  1280. made a

  1281. treaty with

  1282. him and

  1283. let him

  1284. go

  1285. by the

  1286. word of

  1287. the Lord

  1288. one of

  1289. the company

  1290. of the

  1291. prophet

  1292. said to

  1293. his

  1294. companion

  1295. another

  1296. prophet

  1297. strike me

  1298. with your

  1299. weapon

  1300. but he

  1301. refused

  1302. so the

  1303. prophet said

  1304. because you

  1305. have not

  1306. obeyed the

  1307. Lord as

  1308. soon as

  1309. you leave

  1310. me a

  1311. lion will

  1312. kill you

  1313. after that

  1314. the man

  1315. went away

  1316. a lion

  1317. found him

  1318. and killed

  1319. him

  1320. the prophet

  1321. then found

  1322. another man

  1323. and said

  1324. strike me

  1325. please

  1326. so the

  1327. man struck

  1328. him and

  1329. wounded him

  1330. then the

  1331. prophet went

  1332. and stood

  1333. by the road

  1334. waiting for

  1335. the king

  1336. that's king

  1337. Ahab

  1338. he disguised

  1339. himself with

  1340. his headband

  1341. down over

  1342. his eyes

  1343. as the

  1344. king passed

  1345. by the

  1346. prophet called

  1347. out to

  1348. him

  1349. your servant

  1350. went into

  1351. the thick

  1352. of the

  1353. battle

  1354. and someone

  1355. came to

  1356. me with

  1357. a captive

  1358. and said

  1359. guard this

  1360. man

  1361. if he is

  1362. missing

  1363. it will be

  1364. your life

  1365. for his

  1366. life

  1367. or you

  1368. must pay

  1369. a talent

  1370. of silver

  1371. which was

  1372. years of

  1373. wages

  1374. basically

  1375. it was

  1376. impossible

  1377. to pay

  1378. off

  1379. while your

  1380. servant

  1381. was busy

  1382. here and

  1383. there

  1384. the man

  1385. disappeared

  1386. that is

  1387. your

  1388. sentence

  1389. the king

  1390. of Israel

  1391. said

  1392. you have

  1393. pronounced

  1394. it yourself

  1395. then the

  1396. prophet quickly

  1397. removed his

  1398. headband from

  1399. his eyes

  1400. and the

  1401. king of

  1402. Israel

  1403. recognized him

  1404. as one of

  1405. the prophets

  1406. he said to

  1407. king Ahab

  1408. this is what

  1409. the lord

  1410. says

  1411. you have

  1412. set free

  1413. a man

  1414. I had

  1415. determined

  1416. should die

  1417. therefore

  1418. it is

  1419. your life

  1420. for his

  1421. life

  1422. your people

  1423. for his

  1424. people

  1425. sullen

  1426. and angry

  1427. the king

  1428. of Israel

  1429. went to

  1430. his palace

  1431. in Samaria

  1432. well Ahab

  1433. doesn't

  1434. respond as

  1435. he should

  1436. instead of

  1437. sharing in

  1438. the victory

  1439. he actually

  1440. excludes himself

  1441. from the

  1442. victory and

  1443. becomes an

  1444. enemy

  1445. how did he

  1446. do that

  1447. well

  1448. he made a

  1449. treaty

  1450. with the

  1451. enemy

  1452. it doesn't

  1453. take a whole

  1454. lot of

  1455. brains to

  1456. work out

  1457. that Ben

  1458. Hadad

  1459. wanted

  1460. rid of

  1461. Ahab

  1462. I mean

  1463. he's

  1464. tried

  1465. twice

  1466. he's

  1467. already

  1468. taken

  1469. an army

  1470. to him

  1471. twice

  1472. yes he's

  1473. been

  1474. defeated

  1475. but instead

  1476. of finishing

  1477. him off

  1478. Ahab

  1479. goes and

  1480. does a

  1481. deal

  1482. with him

  1483. end of

  1484. verse 34

  1485. on the

  1486. basis of

  1487. a treaty

  1488. I will

  1489. set you

  1490. free

  1491. so he

  1492. made a

  1493. treaty

  1494. with him

  1495. and let

  1496. him go

  1497. from his

  1498. enemy

  1499. oh you're

  1500. my brother

  1501. from an

  1502. attacker

  1503. to

  1504. you're

  1505. my

  1506. ally

  1507. let's

  1508. do

  1509. business

  1510. together

  1511. what's

  1512. going

  1513. on

  1514. well it

  1515. seems Ahab

  1516. feels he

  1517. can get

  1518. more and

  1519. do more

  1520. by keeping

  1521. his enemies

  1522. close to

  1523. himself

  1524. why get

  1525. rid of

  1526. your enemies

  1527. when they

  1528. can do

  1529. good for

  1530. you

  1531. Ahab

  1532. won't

  1533. see it

  1534. God

  1535. had won

  1536. the battle

  1537. he had

  1538. defeated

  1539. the enemy

  1540. so that Ahab

  1541. would be

  1542. loyal to

  1543. God and

  1544. to God

  1545. alone

  1546. that he

  1547. would be

  1548. devoted to

  1549. him and

  1550. worship him

  1551. but Ahab

  1552. isn't ready

  1553. to submit

  1554. to the one

  1555. true God

  1556. who won

  1557. the battle

  1558. for him

  1559. you see

  1560. we can't

  1561. share our

  1562. allegiance

  1563. with another

  1564. we either

  1565. submit to

  1566. God

  1567. or we

  1568. reject him

  1569. we are

  1570. either with

  1571. him

  1572. or we

  1573. are against

  1574. him

  1575. we can't

  1576. live with

  1577. a foot

  1578. in both

  1579. camps

  1580. kind of

  1581. going

  1582. well

  1583. you know

  1584. Sundays

  1585. is a good

  1586. day to

  1587. be with

  1588. the Lord

  1589. but the

  1590. other days

  1591. I'll do

  1592. it my

  1593. own way

  1594. but he

  1595. didn't just

  1596. make a

  1597. treaty

  1598. did he

  1599. making a

  1600. treaty

  1601. with the

  1602. enemy

  1603. was a

  1604. sign of a

  1605. much deeper

  1606. and greater

  1607. problem in

  1608. Ahab's

  1609. life

  1610. disobedience

  1611. to God's

  1612. word

  1613. now

  1614. disobedience

  1615. I mean

  1616. it's not

  1617. such a big

  1618. deal is it

  1619. it doesn't

  1620. matter

  1621. really

  1622. if I just

  1623. do my own

  1624. thing and

  1625. live my own

  1626. way

  1627. just okay

  1628. I mean I'm

  1629. not saying I'm

  1630. going to live

  1631. my own way

  1632. all of the

  1633. time but

  1634. just some

  1635. of the

  1636. time

  1637. that's

  1638. alright

  1639. isn't it

  1640. just a

  1641. little bit

  1642. now and

  1643. again

  1644. well

  1645. disobedience

  1646. to God's

  1647. word is

  1648. literally

  1649. deadly

  1650. serious

  1651. you see

  1652. look at

  1653. verse 35

  1654. 36

  1655. we might

  1656. find this

  1657. punishment

  1658. of this

  1659. disobedient

  1660. prophet a

  1661. little bit

  1662. harsh

  1663. I mean

  1664. he's just

  1665. been told

  1666. cut me

  1667. cut me

  1668. no I'm

  1669. not going

  1670. to do

  1671. that

  1672. well a

  1673. lion's

  1674. going to

  1675. come and

  1676. kill you

  1677. we kind

  1678. of that

  1679. we don't

  1680. like hearing

  1681. that do we

  1682. are reading

  1683. it but you

  1684. know what

  1685. it's not

  1686. really what

  1687. I think

  1688. because look

  1689. at the issue

  1690. at hand

  1691. verse 36

  1692. the prophet

  1693. said

  1694. because you

  1695. have not

  1696. obeyed the

  1697. Lord

  1698. as soon as

  1699. you leave me

  1700. a lion will

  1701. kill you

  1702. he didn't

  1703. just make

  1704. it up

  1705. this was a

  1706. message from

  1707. the Lord

  1708. this was a

  1709. word from

  1710. the Lord

  1711. and he

  1712. disobeyed

  1713. it

  1714. you see

  1715. we can't

  1716. just disobey

  1717. God and

  1718. think it

  1719. doesn't

  1720. matter

  1721. this is

  1722. God's

  1723. world

  1724. not my

  1725. world

  1726. it's

  1727. my life

  1728. he owns

  1729. me

  1730. and I

  1731. am to

  1732. live in

  1733. obedience

  1734. to my

  1735. maker

  1736. and my

  1737. creator

  1738. I don't

  1739. get to

  1740. choose what

  1741. I like

  1742. and what

  1743. I don't

  1744. like

  1745. what I

  1746. want to

  1747. obey

  1748. and what

  1749. I don't

  1750. want to

  1751. obey

  1752. well the

  1753. time comes

  1754. for the

  1755. prophet to

  1756. confront

  1757. Ahab

  1758. with his

  1759. disobedience

  1760. I mean

  1761. it's brilliant

  1762. isn't it

  1763. what a

  1764. fabulous

  1765. scene

  1766. the prophet

  1767. pretends to

  1768. be a

  1769. soldier

  1770. put on a

  1771. few raggedy

  1772. old clothes

  1773. somebody's

  1774. cut him

  1775. he's wiped

  1776. the blood

  1777. in his

  1778. arms

  1779. and his

  1780. face

  1781. there he

  1782. is standing

  1783. out on the

  1784. side of the

  1785. road

  1786. it looks

  1787. like he's

  1788. been in

  1789. battle

  1790. verse 39

  1791. and as

  1792. the king

  1793. passed by

  1794. the prophet

  1795. called out

  1796. to him

  1797. your servant

  1798. went into

  1799. the thick

  1800. of the

  1801. battle

  1802. and someone

  1803. came to

  1804. me with

  1805. a captive

  1806. and said

  1807. guard

  1808. this man

  1809. if he

  1810. is missing

  1811. it will

  1812. be your

  1813. life for

  1814. his life

  1815. or you

  1816. must pay

  1817. a talent

  1818. of silver

  1819. well while

  1820. your servant

  1821. was busy

  1822. here and

  1823. there

  1824. don't know

  1825. what he

  1826. was doing

  1827. but he

  1828. was doing

  1829. something

  1830. the man

  1831. ran off

  1832. he escaped

  1833. the prisoner

  1834. escaped

  1835. basically

  1836. he's asking

  1837. Ahab

  1838. what should

  1839. the punishment

  1840. be

  1841. well look at

  1842. the end of

  1843. verse 40

  1844. that is

  1845. your sentence

  1846. the king of

  1847. Israel said

  1848. you have

  1849. pronounced it

  1850. yourself

  1851. you should

  1852. be killed

  1853. your life

  1854. for his

  1855. life

  1856. that's what

  1857. happens when

  1858. you disobey

  1859. orders

  1860. well without

  1861. knowing Ahab

  1862. has just

  1863. pronounced his

  1864. own sentence

  1865. hasn't he

  1866. the prophet

  1867. reveals his

  1868. true identity

  1869. he takes

  1870. off the

  1871. mask

  1872. presents

  1873. himself to

  1874. the king

  1875. verse 42

  1876. this is what

  1877. the lord

  1878. says

  1879. you Ahab

  1880. have set a

  1881. man free

  1882. I determined

  1883. should die

  1884. therefore it

  1885. is your

  1886. life for

  1887. his life

  1888. your people

  1889. for his

  1890. people

  1891. Ahab

  1892. because you

  1893. disobeyed the

  1894. word of the

  1895. true king

  1896. you will

  1897. die

  1898. and tragically

  1899. as we'll find

  1900. out in the

  1901. next couple

  1902. of chapters

  1903. it is his

  1904. so called

  1905. brother

  1906. the king

  1907. of Aram

  1908. who finally

  1909. ends

  1910. Ahab's

  1911. life

  1912. you see

  1913. it's not

  1914. safe to

  1915. disobey

  1916. God

  1917. is it

  1918. it's not

  1919. wise to

  1920. reject and

  1921. ignore all

  1922. that God

  1923. has done

  1924. Ahab

  1925. through his

  1926. own stubbornness

  1927. has excluded

  1928. himself from

  1929. victory

  1930. he's become

  1931. the enemy

  1932. at the very

  1933. least he

  1934. should have

  1935. fallen down

  1936. and submitted

  1937. instead

  1938. verse 43

  1939. he goes and

  1940. sulks like a

  1941. baby

  1942. sullen and

  1943. angry

  1944. the king of

  1945. Israel went

  1946. off to his

  1947. palace

  1948. you see

  1949. the problem

  1950. is

  1951. we all

  1952. have sinful

  1953. disobedient

  1954. hearts

  1955. we really

  1956. don't

  1957. obey as

  1958. we ought

  1959. to obey

  1960. we like

  1961. bits of

  1962. the bible

  1963. but not

  1964. all the

  1965. bits

  1966. we read

  1967. the parts

  1968. that we

  1969. think

  1970. yeah I

  1971. like that

  1972. I can

  1973. do that

  1974. but don't

  1975. ask me

  1976. to do

  1977. that

  1978. we

  1979. deserve

  1980. to die

  1981. we deserve

  1982. to be

  1983. judged

  1984. but God

  1985. in his

  1986. grace

  1987. has come

  1988. to fight

  1989. that battle

  1990. for us

  1991. and if we

  1992. are to share

  1993. in his

  1994. victory

  1995. if we are

  1996. to share

  1997. in the

  1998. blessings

  1999. of what

  2000. Christ

  2001. has done

  2002. for us

  2003. on the

  2004. cross

  2005. in response

  2006. we need

  2007. to turn

  2008. from our

  2009. enemy

  2010. and make

  2011. that decisive

  2012. break

  2013. repent

  2014. turn and

  2015. go in the

  2016. opposite

  2017. direction

  2018. bow the

  2019. knee to

  2020. the king

  2021. submit to

  2022. his word

  2023. not make

  2024. treaties

  2025. and live

  2026. with a

  2027. foot in

  2028. both

  2029. camps

  2030. turn

  2031. from our

  2032. arrogant

  2033. pride

  2034. and submit

  2035. to the

  2036. true king

  2037. the king

  2038. who went

  2039. to the

  2040. cross

  2041. for us

  2042. and said

  2043. my life

  2044. for your

  2045. life

  2046. the one

  2047. who gives

  2048. us the

  2049. spoils

  2050. the blessings

  2051. of the

  2052. victory

  2053. forgiveness

  2054. and peace

  2055. and joy

  2056. and the

  2057. promise

  2058. of his

  2059. holy

  2060. spirit

  2061. that we

  2062. would love

  2063. him

  2064. and obey

  2065. him

  2066. this is

  2067. all yours

  2068. you are

  2069. now my

  2070. children

  2071. you are

  2072. now part

  2073. of my

  2074. kingdom

  2075. this is

  2076. the king

  2077. we can

  2078. depend upon

  2079. in every

  2080. battle that

  2081. we face

  2082. if he's

  2083. won the

  2084. greatest

  2085. battle of

  2086. all and

  2087. defeated

  2088. sin and

  2089. death

  2090. itself

  2091. well then

  2092. whatever we

  2093. face into

  2094. in our

  2095. life

  2096. we have

  2097. a king

  2098. who will

  2099. be with

  2100. us

  2101. and who

  2102. will

  2103. equip us

  2104. my grace

  2105. is sufficient

  2106. for you

  2107. and even

  2108. when we

  2109. come face

  2110. to face

  2111. with the

  2112. battle of

  2113. death

  2114. itself

  2115. he has

  2116. reigned

  2117. victorious

  2118. from the

  2119. grave

  2120. he has

  2121. won

  2122. he is

  2123. victorious

  2124. he is

  2125. heaven's

  2126. champion

  2127. wouldn't it

  2128. be a

  2129. tragedy

  2130. to depend

  2131. to depend

  2132. on your

  2133. own

  2134. wisdom

  2135. wouldn't it

  2136. be stupidity

  2137. to stand

  2138. in your

  2139. own

  2140. strength
