  1. Father, we thank you for the word of your truth.

  2. Thank you that it is powerful and effective.

  3. And we pray that we would not sit in judgment over it,

  4. but we would sit in submission under it.

  5. And we would ask, Father, that you would take your word

  6. and drive it deep into our hearts and lives

  7. so that we may become who you call us to be.

  8. Teach us this morning, we pray.

  9. In Jesus' name. Amen.

  10. Well, Ahab's persistent rebellion...

  11. Oh, good man, Sam. We're going to stop.

  12. We're going to press pause again.

  13. These things I forget.

  14. If you'd like a sheet, sorry about that.

  15. So take notes and a pen.

  16. Thank you.

  17. Thank you.

  18. Thank you.

  19. Thank you.

  20. Thank you.

  21. Thank you.

  22. Thank you.

  23. Thank you.

  24. Thank you.

  25. Thank you.

  26. Ahab's persistent rebellion has been matched by God's persistent grace.

  27. For six chapters we've been following his life from chapter 17 all the way up to chapter 22.

  28. And God has continuously and persistently been calling Ahab back to himself by his word through the prophets.

  29. Ahab, come back to me.

  30. But the more he hears God's word, the more defiant he becomes.

  31. His life is summarized for us at the very end of chapter 21 verse 25.

  32. There was never anyone like Ahab who sold himself to do evil in the eyes of the Lord, urged on by Jezebel his wife.

  33. He behaved in the vilest manner by going after idols.

  34. So setting up his own gods.

  35. Like the Amorites, the Lord drove out before Israel.

  36. So now as we enter into chapter 22, it records for us the tragic end of Ahab's life.

  37. Now as we follow along these last few days of his life, we need to be careful that Ahab's story doesn't become our story.

  38. In fact, the New Testament tells us how we should read accounts like Ahab.

  39. You can see it there on the screen.

  40. It's talking about the account in the Old Testament.

  41. And it says,

  42. These things happened to them as examples and were written down as warnings for us.

  43. So if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don't fall.

  44. So the account of Ahab, this whole account of One Kings and this life of Ahab has been written down for us.

  45. And it becomes a gracious warning to us.

  46. Be careful that you don't fall.

  47. Well, what do we need to be careful of?

  48. Well, first, our stubborn refusal to hear God's voice.

  49. Ahab seems to be trigger happy.

  50. He's itching again for a fight.

  51. Let's read from verse 1.

  52. For three years there was no war between Aram and Israel.

  53. But in the third year, Jehoshaphat, king of Judah, went down to the sea, the king of Israel.

  54. So Judah was in the north, Israel in the south.

  55. And the king of Israel had said to his officials,

  56. Don't you know that Ramoth Gilead belongs to us?

  57. And yet we are doing nothing to retake it from the king of Aram.

  58. Now, Ramoth Gilead was a very important, it was a very strategic town.

  59. It kind of sat right on the border of Israel and their enemies, Aram.

  60. So it was an important place to own or to have rule over.

  61. Verse 4.

  62. So he asked Jehoshaphat, Will you go with me to fight against Ramoth Gilead?

  63. Jehoshaphat replied to the king of Israel, I am as you are.

  64. My people is your people, my horses is your horses.

  65. Of course, I'll support you in a fight.

  66. I'm with you.

  67. But Jehoshaphat also said to the king of Israel,

  68. First seek the counsel of the Lord.

  69. So it seems that at least between the two of them,

  70. there is one of them who has a little bit of sense.

  71. We need to hear what God has to say about this.

  72. First seek the counsel of the Lord.

  73. Well, what's Ahab going to do?

  74. Well, Ahab stubbornly rejects the word.

  75. Verse 6.

  76. So the king of Israel brought together the prophets, about 400 men, and asked them,

  77. Shall I go to war against Ramoth Gilead or shall I refrain?

  78. Go, they answered, for the Lord will give it in to the king's hands.

  79. Well, it appears, doesn't it, on the face of it, that he's taken good advice.

  80. He's called in the prophets.

  81. Not just one of them, but 400 of them.

  82. Advisors who's going to tell him what to do.

  83. But they're not who they appear to be.

  84. Verse 7.

  85. But Jehoshaphat asked,

  86. Is there no longer a prophet of the Lord here whom we can inquire of?

  87. Prophets they may be,

  88. but they are not the Lord's prophets.

  89. You see, Ahab doesn't want to hear God's word.

  90. And the reason why,

  91. look at the end of verse 8,

  92. because the prophets, and in particular Micaiah,

  93. well, he never prophesies anything good about me,

  94. but always bad.

  95. He is Micaiah, son of Imlah.

  96. I don't want to listen to him.

  97. Now, don't we treat God's words in the same way?

  98. We won't listen to it.

  99. We won't read God's word.

  100. We push it away because, well,

  101. I don't like what God's word has to say.

  102. It tells me terrible things about myself.

  103. That I'm a sinner and that when I try to be good,

  104. I can't be good.

  105. And so we search out other words.

  106. We go from one church to another church,

  107. from one teaching to another teaching.

  108. We turn on the television to the God channel,

  109. or we look up preachers on the internet

  110. who promise things like health and wealth

  111. and tell us, you're wonderful.

  112. Never settling until we hear what we want to hear.

  113. Never content until the preacher says,

  114. what suits my desires.

  115. The New Testament says exactly the same thing.

  116. Listen to Paul's instruction to Timothy,

  117. a young pastor.

  118. He says,

  119. the time will come

  120. when people will not put up with sound doctrine.

  121. Instead, to suit their own desires,

  122. they will gather round them

  123. a great number of teachers

  124. to say what their itching ears want to hear.

  125. They will turn their ears away from the truth

  126. and turn aside to myths.

  127. Have you got itchy ears?

  128. Ahab did.

  129. Never satisfied

  130. until he heard what he wanted to hear.

  131. Be careful

  132. that none of us

  133. don't develop

  134. an itchy ear syndrome

  135. where we close

  136. our ears

  137. to the word of God's truth.

  138. Second, Ahab stubbornly

  139. sits in judgment

  140. over the word.

  141. Ahab,

  142. it seems,

  143. goes along with Jehoshaphat

  144. and he goes,

  145. right, okay,

  146. I've got these 400 prophets,

  147. but I'll listen to this one prophet of God.

  148. But look at the way Ahab does it

  149. in verse 10.

  150. Dressed in their royal robes,

  151. the king of Israel

  152. and Jehoshaphat,

  153. king of Judah,

  154. were sitting on their thrones.

  155. There they are

  156. with their crown

  157. and their fine robes

  158. and all their regalia

  159. at the threshing floor

  160. by the entrance

  161. of the gate of Samaria

  162. with all the prophets

  163. prophesying before them.

  164. It's kind of like

  165. the meeting place,

  166. the gathering place

  167. to hear what has to be said.

  168. He's acting like

  169. a high court judge.

  170. Bring in the prophets.

  171. Let's hear what they have to say.

  172. First up,

  173. verse 11,

  174. Now Zedekiah,

  175. son of Kenanah,

  176. had made iron horns

  177. and he declared,

  178. This is what the Lord says.

  179. With these you will gore

  180. the Arameans

  181. until they are destroyed.

  182. Oh, I like Zedekiah.

  183. He's a good prophet.

  184. I'll keep him.

  185. And one by one

  186. they all have their say.

  187. Verse 12,

  188. All the other prophets

  189. were prophesying

  190. the same thing.

  191. Attack Ramoth Gilead

  192. and be victorious,

  193. they said,

  194. for the Lord

  195. will give it

  196. into the king's hands.

  197. Now it's Micaiah's turn.

  198. God's prophet.

  199. He's under serious pressure.

  200. If he wants to keep

  201. on the king's good side,

  202. well,

  203. all he has to do,

  204. look at the end of verse 13,

  205. Let your word agree with theirs

  206. and speak favourably.

  207. Just say what everybody else

  208. is saying

  209. and you'll be okay.

  210. Verse 14,

  211. But Micaiah said,

  212. As surely as the Lord lives,

  213. I can only tell him

  214. what the Lord tells me.

  215. We can see it coming,

  216. can't we?

  217. Micaiah isn't going to win

  218. prophet of the year award,

  219. is he?

  220. But it's not just Ahab

  221. who sits in judgment

  222. over God's word.

  223. We sit on our own

  224. self-made thrones,

  225. assuming a position of authority

  226. over God's word.

  227. Do we ever decide

  228. what parts of the Bible

  229. I think are right?

  230. It's no longer

  231. what God actually says,

  232. but what I desire,

  233. what I think is right.

  234. And so we ignore

  235. difficult things

  236. about marriage

  237. and sexuality.

  238. Things about

  239. forgiving your enemy

  240. and repenting

  241. and dealing with things

  242. like greed

  243. and gossiping.

  244. So we sit in judgment

  245. over God's word

  246. and we decide

  247. what parts we obey

  248. and things we don't

  249. want to obey.

  250. Well, I need to hear

  251. the word of God

  252. through another prophet,

  253. the prophet Isaiah.

  254. This is what he says.

  255. God's speaking through him.

  256. And these are the ones

  257. I look on with favour.

  258. Those who are humble

  259. and contrite in spirit

  260. and who tremble

  261. at my word.

  262. We never ever sit

  263. over the word.

  264. We are always to be sitting

  265. under the word.

  266. Let it challenge us.

  267. Let it shape us.

  268. Let it show us

  269. who we are.

  270. So first,

  271. be careful

  272. of the warning

  273. or the refusal

  274. to hear God's voice.

  275. Second,

  276. be careful

  277. of the tragic deception

  278. by rejecting

  279. God's truth.

  280. You see,

  281. Ahab is still concerned

  282. about the war situation.

  283. Verse 15.

  284. So when Micaiah arrived,

  285. the king asked him,

  286. Micaiah,

  287. shall we go to war

  288. against Ramoth Gilead

  289. or not?

  290. Attack and be victorious,

  291. he answered,

  292. for the Lord's going

  293. to give it into

  294. the king's hands.

  295. The king said to him,

  296. how many times

  297. must I make you swear

  298. to tell me nothing

  299. but the truth

  300. in the name of the Lord?

  301. Will you stop messing

  302. with my head,

  303. Micaiah?

  304. You only tell me

  305. bad things.

  306. Why are you telling me

  307. this good thing?

  308. Just tell me the truth.

  309. Okay,

  310. you want the real truth?

  311. Well,

  312. here it is.

  313. Verse 17.

  314. Micaiah answered,

  315. I saw all Israel

  316. scattered on the hills

  317. like sheep

  318. without a shepherd.

  319. And the Lord said,

  320. these people have no master.

  321. Let each one go home

  322. in peace.

  323. Look, Ahab,

  324. if you go up and fight,

  325. you will not only lose,

  326. you are going to die.

  327. The people are going

  328. to be left

  329. without a shepherd,

  330. a leader,

  331. a king.

  332. But what's the truth

  333. to a man

  334. who's already decided

  335. what he wants

  336. the truth to be?

  337. The reality is,

  338. Ahab is convinced

  339. in his own heart

  340. what he should do.

  341. He doesn't want

  342. to know the truth.

  343. You see,

  344. Micaiah explains

  345. to Ahab

  346. what is actually

  347. going on

  348. in his own heart.

  349. Micaiah

  350. has had a vision.

  351. God has given him

  352. a vision

  353. of what's actually

  354. going on

  355. in Ahab's life.

  356. Let's pick it up

  357. in verse 19.

  358. Micaiah continued.

  359. He's speaking

  360. to Ahab.

  361. Therefore,

  362. hear the word

  363. of the Lord.

  364. I saw the Lord

  365. sitting on his throne.

  366. Now,

  367. isn't that significant?

  368. Just a moment ago,

  369. Ahab was sitting

  370. on his throne

  371. in all his judgment.

  372. Now,

  373. the focus changes.

  374. I saw the Lord

  375. sitting on his throne.

  376. with all the multitudes

  377. of heaven

  378. standing around him

  379. on his right

  380. and on the left.

  381. So all the who's who,

  382. those who think

  383. they have power

  384. and authority,

  385. all of them

  386. gathered around

  387. God's throne.

  388. And the Lord said,

  389. who will entice

  390. Ahab

  391. into attacking

  392. Ramoth Gilead

  393. and going to

  394. his death there?

  395. You see,

  396. God has already

  397. decreed

  398. that Ahab

  399. is going to die.

  400. Because he's

  401. rejected the truth,

  402. because of his

  403. persistent disobedience,

  404. he will die.

  405. It's just a case

  406. of when

  407. and how that's

  408. going to happen.

  409. Verse 21,

  410. Finally,

  411. a spirit

  412. came forward,

  413. that's an evil spirit,

  414. and stood

  415. before the Lord

  416. and said,

  417. I will entice him.

  418. By what means,

  419. the Lord asked.

  420. Well,

  421. I will go out

  422. and I will be

  423. a deceiving spirit

  424. in the mouths

  425. of all his

  426. prophets,

  427. he said.

  428. You will succeed

  429. in enticing him,

  430. said the Lord.

  431. Go

  432. and do it.

  433. God gives

  434. the lying spirit

  435. permission

  436. to go out

  437. and deceive

  438. Ahab.

  439. So,

  440. Ahab,

  441. you want to know

  442. what's going on

  443. in your own heart?

  444. You really want to know

  445. what's going on

  446. behind the scenes?

  447. Well,

  448. here it is.

  449. Let me tell you,

  450. verse 23.

  451. So now the Lord

  452. has put a deceiving spirit

  453. in the mouths

  454. of all these

  455. prophets of yours.

  456. The Lord

  457. has decreed

  458. disaster

  459. for you.

  460. You see,

  461. the word

  462. that Ahab

  463. has been chosen

  464. to listen to

  465. is a word

  466. of deception.

  467. rejection.

  468. In fact,

  469. the voices

  470. that Ahab

  471. has been listening

  472. to

  473. is in reality

  474. a voice

  475. of God's

  476. judgment.

  477. He's become

  478. so deceived

  479. by his own

  480. rebellion

  481. that he can

  482. no longer

  483. discern

  484. what the truth

  485. is.

  486. Now,

  487. I don't know

  488. about you,

  489. but that

  490. frightens me.

  491. That in my

  492. rejection

  493. of God's

  494. truth,

  495. I'm actually

  496. only deceiving

  497. myself.

  498. In fact,

  499. I can become

  500. so deceived

  501. that I can

  502. no longer

  503. discern

  504. what the

  505. truth

  506. actually is.

  507. And that

  508. scares me.

  509. But he doesn't

  510. just have a

  511. deceived heart.

  512. He has a

  513. defiant

  514. response.

  515. Tragically,

  516. Ahab

  517. plays out

  518. what God

  519. has exposed

  520. in his

  521. own heart.

  522. The word

  523. of truth

  524. has absolutely

  525. no effect.

  526. You see,

  527. we'll sit

  528. here and

  529. we'll go,

  530. well,

  531. that's not

  532. fair.

  533. God

  534. deceived

  535. him.

  536. God

  537. told him

  538. lies.

  539. Well,

  540. God

  541. also made

  542. it absolutely

  543. crystal clear

  544. what was

  545. going to

  546. happen.

  547. Do you

  548. see at the

  549. end of

  550. verse 23?

  551. The Lord

  552. has decreed

  553. disaster

  554. for you.

  555. So whether

  556. it's a

  557. deceiving spirit

  558. or the

  559. truth,

  560. it's loud

  561. and clear,

  562. it's plain

  563. and simple,

  564. you go to

  565. war,

  566. you're going

  567. to die.

  568. Well,

  569. what's his

  570. response?

  571. Verse 26,

  572. the king of

  573. Israel then

  574. ordered,

  575. take Micaiah

  576. and send

  577. him back

  578. to Ammon,

  579. the ruler

  580. of the city

  581. and to

  582. Joash,

  583. the king's

  584. son,

  585. and say,

  586. this is

  587. what the

  588. king says,

  589. put this

  590. fellow in

  591. prison and

  592. give him

  593. nothing but

  594. bread and

  595. water until

  596. I return

  597. safely.

  598. How

  599. defiant

  600. is that?

  601. It's just

  602. been spelled

  603. out to him

  604. so clearly,

  605. you go and

  606. fight,

  607. you're going

  608. to die.

  609. The Lord

  610. has decreed

  611. disaster for

  612. you,

  613. but in

  614. his defiance,

  615. his only

  616. response is,

  617. put Micaiah

  618. in prison,

  619. I'm going

  620. to come

  621. home safely.

  622. Even if he

  623. wanted to

  624. listen to

  625. the truth,

  626. he can't.

  627. The truth

  628. no longer

  629. means anything

  630. to him.

  631. You see,

  632. this does

  633. scare me,

  634. because

  635. continued

  636. and persistent

  637. disobedience

  638. leads to

  639. defiance.

  640. If we keep

  641. ignoring the

  642. truth time

  643. and time

  644. again,

  645. then the

  646. time will

  647. come when

  648. we will no

  649. longer be able

  650. to discern

  651. the truth.

  652. We can no

  653. longer recognize

  654. the sin in

  655. our life that

  656. needs repented

  657. of.

  658. we have

  659. become so

  660. deceived by

  661. the very

  662. voices that

  663. we have

  664. chosen to

  665. hear,

  666. that we

  667. can no

  668. longer see

  669. what's right

  670. and what's

  671. wrong.

  672. So,

  673. be careful

  674. of the

  675. refusal to

  676. hear God's

  677. voice.

  678. Be careful

  679. of the

  680. deception

  681. by rejecting

  682. God's

  683. truth.

  684. And let's

  685. be warned

  686. about the

  687. faithful

  688. consequences

  689. of defying

  690. God's

  691. word.

  692. You see,

  693. Ahab may

  694. be a man

  695. of authority,

  696. he may

  697. be a king,

  698. he may

  699. lock

  700. Micaiah up

  701. in the

  702. prison,

  703. he may

  704. have

  705. silenced

  706. God's

  707. prophet,

  708. shut him

  709. away,

  710. but God's

  711. word will

  712. not and

  713. cannot be

  714. silenced.

  715. What God

  716. has spoken

  717. will come

  718. to pass.

  719. First,

  720. there's going

  721. to be no

  722. hiding from

  723. God's

  724. word.

  725. Let's

  726. follow the

  727. account.

  728. It's,

  729. again,

  730. brilliant

  731. writing,

  732. wonderful

  733. narrative,

  734. a great

  735. story.

  736. Let's pick

  737. it up in

  738. verse 29.

  739. So the

  740. king of

  741. Israel and

  742. Jehoshaphat,

  743. king of

  744. Judah,

  745. went up

  746. to Ram

  747. of Gilead.

  748. They're

  749. going to

  750. go fight.

  751. The king

  752. of Israel

  753. said to

  754. Jehoshaphat,

  755. I will

  756. enter the

  757. battle in

  758. disguise,

  759. but you

  760. wear your

  761. royal robes.

  762. So the

  763. king of

  764. Israel disguised

  765. himself and

  766. went into

  767. battle.

  768. Now from a

  769. military point

  770. of view,

  771. it makes

  772. perfect sense.

  773. What a

  774. wonderful plan.

  775. Dress up,

  776. pretend to be

  777. somebody different.

  778. If the enemy

  779. doesn't know

  780. who you are,

  781. then there's a

  782. high chance

  783. you're going

  784. to survive.

  785. Because the

  786. whole idea in

  787. battles then

  788. was you

  789. aim for the

  790. king.

  791. If you got

  792. the king,

  793. you got the

  794. whole army.

  795. So there's

  796. Jehoshaphat,

  797. the dumb

  798. nut,

  799. dressed up

  800. as the

  801. king,

  802. and the

  803. true king

  804. in disguise.

  805. What's going

  806. to happen?

  807. Well,

  808. verse 31.

  809. Now the

  810. king of

  811. Aram had

  812. ordered his

  813. 32 chariot

  814. commanders,

  815. do not

  816. fight with

  817. anyone,

  818. small or

  819. great,

  820. except the

  821. king of

  822. Israel.

  823. When the

  824. chariot

  825. commanders saw

  826. Jehoshaphat,

  827. they thought,

  828. surely this is

  829. the king of

  830. Israel.

  831. So they

  832. turned to

  833. attack him.

  834. But when

  835. they heard

  836. Jehoshaphat

  837. cry out,

  838. please,

  839. not me,

  840. not me,

  841. it's not

  842. me,

  843. I'm not

  844. Aram,

  845. I'm not

  846. Ahab,

  847. not me,

  848. don't kill

  849. me.

  850. Verse 33,

  851. the chariot

  852. commander saw

  853. that he was

  854. not the

  855. king of

  856. Israel and

  857. stopped

  858. pursuing him.

  859. Ahab's

  860. plan is

  861. working,

  862. it's

  863. wonderful.

  864. We can

  865. see him

  866. there flying

  867. around in

  868. his chariot.

  869. Micaiah,

  870. who does

  871. he think

  872. he is

  873. telling me

  874. I'm not

  875. going to

  876. die in

  877. battle?

  878. Verse 34,

  879. but someone,

  880. we don't

  881. know his

  882. name,

  883. drew his

  884. bow at

  885. random,

  886. and hit

  887. the king

  888. of Israel

  889. between the

  890. sections of

  891. his armour.

  892. Now,

  893. if this was

  894. a movie,

  895. the camera

  896. would be

  897. focused right

  898. on that

  899. soldier's

  900. face.

  901. Picture the

  902. scene,

  903. the bow

  904. tight up

  905. against his

  906. face,

  907. and as he

  908. releases the

  909. arrow,

  910. the camera

  911. follows it

  912. through the

  913. battle,

  914. all the

  915. people

  916. fighting,

  917. and it's

  918. just going

  919. straight,

  920. straight,

  921. straight,

  922. straight,

  923. straight,

  924. and the

  925. arrow

  926. pierces

  927. Ahab,

  928. and then

  929. the camera

  930. locks on

  931. Ahab's

  932. face,

  933. and his

  934. smile,

  935. that grinning,

  936. defying

  937. smile,

  938. turns to

  939. agony,

  940. and

  941. disbelief.

  942. verse 34,

  943. the king

  944. told his

  945. chariot

  946. driver,

  947. wheel round

  948. and get me

  949. out of the

  950. fighting,

  951. I've been

  952. wounded.

  953. All day

  954. long the

  955. battle raged

  956. and the

  957. king was

  958. propped up

  959. in his

  960. chariot

  961. facing the

  962. Arameans.

  963. The blood

  964. from his

  965. wound ran

  966. onto the

  967. floor of

  968. the chariot,

  969. and that

  970. evening he

  971. died.

  972. You see,

  973. there is no

  974. hiding from

  975. God's

  976. word.

  977. What God

  978. has decreed

  979. will come

  980. to pass,

  981. and nothing

  982. and no

  983. one can

  984. stop it.

  985. Now we

  986. need to be

  987. very careful

  988. that we

  989. don't play

  990. the role

  991. of Ahab,

  992. because we

  993. too can

  994. put on

  995. our disguise

  996. of,

  997. well,

  998. we can

  999. use clever

  1000. arguments,

  1001. undermining

  1002. God's

  1003. word.

  1004. We look

  1005. at it

  1006. and read

  1007. and go,

  1008. it's just

  1009. made up.

  1010. It's just

  1011. an elaborate

  1012. fairy tale.

  1013. Don't need

  1014. to believe

  1015. what God

  1016. has to

  1017. say.

  1018. We can

  1019. even put

  1020. on a

  1021. disguise

  1022. of

  1023. ignorance.

  1024. I didn't

  1025. think it

  1026. was serious.

  1027. I didn't

  1028. realise that

  1029. we had to

  1030. take it

  1031. literally,

  1032. that what

  1033. God says

  1034. really does

  1035. happen.

  1036. I didn't

  1037. understand

  1038. that.

  1039. Well,

  1040. whatever our

  1041. reason,

  1042. whatever disguise

  1043. we put on

  1044. to push

  1045. God's

  1046. word away,

  1047. God's

  1048. word will

  1049. find a

  1050. way through

  1051. like an

  1052. arrow.

  1053. It will

  1054. pierce our

  1055. hearts.

  1056. We

  1057. cannot

  1058. hide

  1059. from the

  1060. truth.

  1061. No

  1062. hiding

  1063. from God's

  1064. word.

  1065. word of

  1066. judgment

  1067. falls.

  1068. You see,

  1069. let's not

  1070. forget what's

  1071. going on

  1072. here.

  1073. This is a

  1074. story that

  1075. started in

  1076. chapter 17.

  1077. All the

  1078. way,

  1079. Ahab has

  1080. persisted in

  1081. disobedience

  1082. and defiance.

  1083. And God

  1084. has matched

  1085. that,

  1086. persistently,

  1087. speaking so

  1088. clearly,

  1089. warning him

  1090. so graciously,

  1091. providing

  1092. prophet after

  1093. prophet,

  1094. Ahab,

  1095. come back

  1096. to me,

  1097. Ahab.

  1098. But when

  1099. grace is

  1100. refused,

  1101. judgment

  1102. will

  1103. come.

  1104. Verse 37.

  1105. So the

  1106. king died

  1107. and was

  1108. brought to

  1109. Samaria,

  1110. and they

  1111. buried him

  1112. there.

  1113. They washed

  1114. the chariot

  1115. at a pool

  1116. in Samaria,

  1117. where the

  1118. prostitutes

  1119. bathed,

  1120. and the

  1121. dogs licked

  1122. up his

  1123. blood,

  1124. as the

  1125. word of

  1126. the

  1127. Lord

  1128. had

  1129. declared.

  1130. In chapter

  1131. 21,

  1132. we didn't

  1133. get an

  1134. opportunity

  1135. to look

  1136. at this.

  1137. It gives

  1138. us a

  1139. whole long

  1140. account of

  1141. how Ahab

  1142. had agreed

  1143. to murder

  1144. a vineyard

  1145. owner named

  1146. Naboth.

  1147. he liked

  1148. his vineyard

  1149. and he

  1150. decided,

  1151. I'll take

  1152. it,

  1153. I'll have

  1154. it.

  1155. And so

  1156. they had

  1157. him killed

  1158. so that

  1159. Ahab could

  1160. have the

  1161. vineyard.

  1162. And in

  1163. response,

  1164. this is what

  1165. God said,

  1166. chapter 21,

  1167. verse 19.

  1168. the prophet

  1169. said to him,

  1170. this is what

  1171. the Lord

  1172. says,

  1173. have you

  1174. not

  1175. murdered a

  1176. man and

  1177. seized his

  1178. property?

  1179. Then say

  1180. to him,

  1181. this is what

  1182. the Lord

  1183. says,

  1184. in the

  1185. place where

  1186. dogs licked

  1187. up Naboth's

  1188. blood,

  1189. dogs will

  1190. lick up

  1191. your blood.

  1192. Yes,

  1193. yours.

  1194. And so,

  1195. chapter 22,

  1196. end of

  1197. verse 38,

  1198. the dogs

  1199. licked up

  1200. his blood

  1201. as the

  1202. word of

  1203. the Lord

  1204. had

  1205. declared.

  1206. Defy the

  1207. word of

  1208. God.

  1209. Reject

  1210. his grace.

  1211. Persist

  1212. in defying

  1213. him.

  1214. And

  1215. judgment

  1216. will

  1217. come.

  1218. Now,

  1219. you can

  1220. say,

  1221. well,

  1222. you know

  1223. what,

  1224. Johnny,

  1225. it's a

  1226. great

  1227. story.

  1228. Yes,

  1229. it would

  1230. make a

  1231. great

  1232. film,

  1233. but it's

  1234. all a

  1235. bit much,

  1236. isn't it,

  1237. really?

  1238. Isn't

  1239. this all

  1240. a little

  1241. bit far

  1242. fetched?

  1243. I mean,

  1244. you don't

  1245. really expect

  1246. us today,

  1247. in 2019,

  1248. to believe

  1249. this kind

  1250. of stuff

  1251. anymore.

  1252. This is

  1253. ancient

  1254. stuff.

  1255. It's

  1256. just a

  1257. story.

  1258. No need

  1259. to take

  1260. it

  1261. seriously.

  1262. Well,

  1263. be careful

  1264. that you

  1265. don't begin

  1266. to deceive

  1267. yourself,

  1268. because it's

  1269. beginning to

  1270. sound a

  1271. little bit

  1272. like,

  1273. just like

  1274. Ahab.

  1275. Be

  1276. careful

  1277. that you

  1278. do not

  1279. fall.

  1280. fall.

  1281. You see,

  1282. God's

  1283. word is

  1284. final.

  1285. What God

  1286. decrees

  1287. will be

  1288. done.

  1289. In other

  1290. words, we

  1291. are to

  1292. trust what

  1293. God says.

  1294. Defying

  1295. God's

  1296. word will

  1297. ultimately

  1298. destroy us,

  1299. yet trusting

  1300. his word

  1301. is what is

  1302. going to

  1303. save us.

  1304. God's

  1305. final word

  1306. through his

  1307. final and

  1308. ultimate

  1309. prophet,

  1310. Jesus

  1311. Christ.

  1312. Have a

  1313. look at

  1314. John chapter

    John 5 chapter mention

  1315. 5 with

  1316. me.

  1317. John

    John 5 chapter mention

  1318. chapter 5,

  1319. the gospel

  1320. according to

  1321. John in the

  1322. New Testament.

  1323. Here we

  1324. hear the

  1325. words through

  1326. God's

  1327. final and

  1328. ultimate

  1329. prophet,

  1330. Jesus

  1331. Christ.

  1332. And how

  1333. we respond

  1334. to this

  1335. word determines

  1336. our destiny.

  1337. John chapter

    John 5:24

  1338. 5, verse

  1339. 24.

  1340. Very

  1341. truly, take

  1342. note of

  1343. this.

  1344. This is

  1345. important.

  1346. This is

  1347. serious.

  1348. Jesus

  1349. says, I

  1350. tell you,

  1351. whoever

  1352. hears my

  1353. word and

  1354. believes him

  1355. who sent

  1356. me has

  1357. eternal

  1358. life and

  1359. will not

  1360. be judged

  1361. but is

  1362. crossed over

  1363. from death

  1364. to life.

  1365. my word

  1366. says Jesus

  1367. is a

  1368. saving

  1369. word.

  1370. I have

  1371. saved you.

  1372. I have

  1373. died for

  1374. you.

  1375. I will

  1376. forgive you.

  1377. I will

  1378. no longer
