  1. I would invite you to please take your Bible and turn with me to the Gospel of Matthew, Matthew chapter 14.

    Matthew 14 chapter mention

  2. Matthew chapter 14.

    Matthew 14 chapter mention

  3. And as you are turning in your copy of God's Word, let me say this morning what an absolute privilege and joy it is for me to be with you.

  4. I send greetings from a lot of dear friends that you have at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky.

  5. It doesn't take long after I open my mouth and begin to speak that you can tell that I'm from the southern states of the United States.

  6. And so it's been a great privilege to get to know many of you last October, and I'm looking forward to the module starting tomorrow.

  7. We have an exciting week ahead as we begin in the apostolic period, just in the apostles, and go all the way to the Reformation.

  8. So lots of rich, glorious history.

  9. But this morning, we look at a marvelous story in God's Word, Matthew chapter 14.

    Matthew 14 chapter mention

  10. I would like to draw your attention this morning, beginning in verse 13.

  11. If you will have your Bibles open to this passage, you'll find it extremely helpful as we look at God's Word together.

  12. Matthew chapter 14, beginning in verse 13.

    Matthew 14 chapter mention

  13. When Jesus heard what had happened, he withdrew by boat privately to a solitary place.

  14. Hearing of this, the crowds followed him on foot from the towns.

  15. When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them and healed their sick.

  16. As evening approached, the disciples came to him and said,

  17. This is a remote place and it's getting late.

  18. Send the crowds away so they may go into the villages and buy food for themselves.

  19. Jesus replied,

  20. They do not need to go away.

  21. You give them something to eat.

  22. We have here only five loaves of bread and two fish, they answered.

  23. Bring them here to me, he said.

  24. And he directed the people to sit down on the grass.

  25. Taking the five loaves and two fish and looking up to heaven,

  26. he gave thanks and broke the loaves.

  27. And he gave them to the disciples and the disciples gave them to the people.

  28. They all ate and were satisfied.

  29. And the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over.

  30. The number of those who ate was about five thousand men besides women and children.

  31. Well, this beautiful account of the feeding of the five thousand

  32. is probably one of the most familiar stories in all of Scripture.

  33. This story is immortalized, as it were, for us in children's Bibles and storybooks.

  34. And has become in our minds and in our thinking one of the great pastoral miracles of Jesus.

  35. As we can picture him in our mind's eye,

  36. sitting on a rock on a grassy hillside with families and lovable children kind of surrounding him.

  37. But with closer examination into the text that's before us,

  38. it's easy to allow that stereotypical scene really affect the way that we read the context

  39. of the passage that we're examining this morning.

  40. And so I want you to notice at the beginning of Matthew 14,

  41. something that is very devastating that has just occurred.

  42. Namely, the execution of John the Baptist.

  43. Who we all know, of course, as the forerunner of the Messiah.

  44. The son of Zacharias and Elizabeth.

  45. Who was in fact the cousin of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  46. Now if you remember the event that was surrounding this horrific execution

  47. and the murder of John the Baptist.

  48. The event surrounding this was the birthday celebration

  49. and a banquet that was being held by a man by the name of Herod Antipas

  50. in his fortress palace in southern Israel around the Dead Sea.

  51. During this lavish event, the crowd became so worked up into a scene of drunkenness and lust

  52. at the dancing of a young girl that Herod promised the young girl

  53. to give her absolutely anything that she asked for.

  54. acting as a puppet on a string controlled by her mother

  55. who had been preached against by John the Baptist

  56. because of her adulterous affair.

  57. She asked for the head of John the Baptist on a platter.

  58. Look with me in Matthew 14 in verse 10.

  59. And had John beheaded in prison.

  60. His head was brought in on a platter and given to the girl who carried it to her mother.

  61. John's disciples came and took his body and buried it.

  62. Then they went and told Jesus.

  63. We could really call this the first banquet of Matthew 14.

  64. A banquet of wickedness and murder and drunkenness.

  65. But in verse 14, we come to a banquet of another kind, don't we?

  66. The banquet that Jesus Himself presides over.

  67. This banquet is not held in a fortress or a palace or a castle,

  68. but it's in the open air of the rolling hills of Galilee.

  69. The invitation to this banquet is not restricted to the intelligentsia of the day

  70. or the high political leaders or the kings of the day.

  71. But this particular banquet is open to all crowds without any discrimination at all.

  72. Unlike Herod's banquet, the preeminent purpose of which was to brag about his position among the crowds,

  73. Jesus' banquet is not provided to boast of his standing to the crowds,

  74. but is meant to be a reminder to us of the love and compassion that Jesus has on people.

  75. Unlike Herod's banquet that was self-serving and deadly,

  76. the compassion of Jesus is so vividly seen in this manner in which He satisfies the vast multitudes that are before Him.

  77. There are only two miracles that are recorded in all four Gospel accounts.

  78. The feeding of the 5,000 and the resurrection of our Lord.

  79. All four Gospel writers saw the great importance of the miracle of the feeding of the 5,000,

  80. and so they include it in all of their accounts.

  81. And what I want to do with you this morning is to simply walk through very slowly this text

  82. as we begin to see five very simple truths.

  83. Five things that I would like to say to you this morning

  84. that we can hang our thoughts on that helps us walk through the text before us.

  85. The very first thing that I would like to mention to you and draw to your attention

  86. is separation from the crowds.

  87. Separation from the crowds.

  88. In the parallel account of this event as recorded for us in Mark's Gospel, chapter 6,

  89. Mark says in chapter 6, verse 30,

  90. the apostles returned to Jesus and told Him all they had done and taught.

  91. Now, this very interesting verse tells us something else that's going on here

  92. just prior to the great miracle of the feeding of the 5,000.

  93. We have to go back a bit to discover what that is.

  94. In Mark chapter 6, verse 7, Mark says,

    Mark 6:7

  95. Jesus called the twelve to Himself and began to send them out two by two

  96. and gave them authority over unclean spirits.

  97. And so here we are, the disciples who have now been ministering in the towns and villages

  98. of the surrounding area are now coming back to Jesus

  99. to report everything that has taken place in their individual ministries

  100. among the people in the surrounding areas.

  101. You see, Jesus has sent them out two by two

  102. into all the surrounding area to teach and to preach and to work miracles.

  103. And now they are coming back, reporting back to Jesus all that has taken place.

  104. And because of this, the crowds of people are following the apostles back to Jesus.

  105. And the crowds are growing numerically into an uncontrollable frenzy of people.

  106. Mark tells us, the disciples are reporting to Jesus all their ministry activities

  107. and the crowds are growing so large, they don't have time to get anything to eat.

  108. And so because of this great commotion,

  109. Jesus and the twelve withdraw from an undisclosed location on the Sea of Galilee

  110. to what Scripture tells us is a deserted area.

  111. Now Luke, in his story of the feeding of the five thousand,

  112. tells us that Jesus and the disciples withdraw from this massive crowd of people

  113. into an area known as Bethsaida.

  114. Now look with me in Matthew 14, verse 13.

    Matthew 14:13

  115. When Jesus heard what happened,

  116. He withdrew by boat privately to a solitary place.

  117. Now when we read this verse,

  118. Matthew seems to indicate that Jesus is alone by Himself.

  119. Even though that we know He is among the other twelve disciples.

  120. But what I love about Matthew's account

  121. is I think Matthew is emphasizing here

  122. something so intimate and personal

  123. about our Lord

  124. in verse 13.

  125. We see something here

  126. of the tenderness

  127. and the grief

  128. and the love of our Lord

  129. for John the Baptist

  130. who has just died.

  131. If you can think back upon your life

  132. and consider times

  133. when you've heard

  134. about the death of a dear loved one

  135. or a death of a dear close friend

  136. and how you've just simply

  137. wanted to withdraw

  138. from the noise

  139. and the hustle and bustle

  140. of the crowds

  141. just to withdraw

  142. and reflect

  143. and to pray

  144. and to go into another room

  145. or go somewhere

  146. simply

  147. to be alone.

  148. And so what I think Matthew

  149. wants us to see here

  150. in verse 13

  151. is simply

  152. Jesus'

  153. heartfelt grief

  154. over the death

  155. of John.

  156. Perhaps it's a time

  157. for Him to think

  158. and to pray

  159. and to contemplate

  160. as the news of the death of John

  161. has reached His ears.

  162. John,

  163. of whom Jesus said,

  164. among those born of woman,

  165. none has been greater.

  166. And I also want to point out

  167. that I see this

  168. as a turning point

  169. in the ministry of Christ

  170. which we'll talk about later.

  171. And so here we are.

  172. Jesus has just heard

  173. that John has been executed.

  174. He gets into a boat

  175. along with the twelve disciples

  176. who have just come back

  177. from all the surrounding villages

  178. and they set off

  179. onto the Sea of Galilee

  180. this one afternoon.

  181. That brings us to our second point.

  182. Sheep without a shepherd.

  183. Would you look at the end

  184. of verse 13?

  185. Hearing of this,

  186. the crowds followed Him

  187. on foot

  188. from the towns.

  189. When Jesus landed

  190. and saw a large crowd,

  191. He had compassion on them

  192. and healed their sick.

  193. The people recognize

  194. Jesus and His disciples

  195. get into the boat.

  196. And from all the surrounding towns

  197. and villages,

  198. they follow Him on foot.

  199. And Jesus and His disciples

  200. set sail on the Sea of Galilee.

  201. They see this massive crowd of people

  202. forming on the shoreline.

  203. Now, there are about 200 villages

  204. and cities and towns

  205. in this area of Galilee.

  206. And Matthew says

  207. they come from the towns.

  208. This indicates, my friends,

  209. that everyone from every town,

  210. every village,

  211. every city

  212. come out to see Jesus.

  213. This speaks to us, doesn't it?

  214. Something of the great fame

  215. of Jesus

  216. during this period.

  217. He never could get away

  218. from the crowds of people.

  219. May I put it in a perhaps

  220. very American terminology,

  221. Jesus is a rock star.

  222. And every time He speaks,

  223. every time He performs a miracle,

  224. literally the entire town

  225. goes to see Him.

  226. And this enormous crowd

  227. is following Jesus

  228. on the shoreline,

  229. but the other Gospel writers say

  230. they not only are walking,

  231. the other Gospel writers tell us

  232. they ran to see Him.

  233. This is not just some ordinary person

  234. that you meet on the street.

  235. They're running after Jesus

  236. because they want Him

  237. to do something for them.

  238. And even when seeking privacy,

  239. Jesus cannot hide.

  240. Look at verse 14.

  241. When Jesus landed and saw

  242. a large crowd,

  243. He had compassion on them.

  244. I just love that verse.

  245. Jesus is not some brash,

  246. harsh man

  247. who cannot be approached

  248. or who's trying to avoid people.

  249. No, He looks upon them

  250. as He did Jerusalem

  251. and He mourns for them.

  252. Their condition,

  253. their need,

  254. their spiritual blindness.

  255. Jesus is the complete opposite

  256. of unapproachable.

  257. He's tender.

  258. And He's loving.

  259. And He's full of compassion.

  260. And the compassion is so great

  261. that He's no longer concerned

  262. over His own rest

  263. or His own time

  264. or His own grief.

  265. But He's most concerned

  266. with the need

  267. that is before Him.

  268. Mark 6, verse 34

    Mark 6:34

  269. says that He looks out

  270. over the vast multitudes of people

  271. as sheep not having a shepherd.

  272. Numerous times throughout Scripture

  273. we see that this is a theme

  274. that's picked up

  275. that the people of Israel

  276. and others are seen

  277. as vast multitudes of people

  278. without a shepherd.

  279. For instance,

  280. in Numbers chapter 27

    Numbers 27 chapter mention

  281. when Moses is praying for the Lord

  282. to send Israel a leader,

  283. it says,

  284. Moses said to the people,

  285. may the Lord the God

  286. who gives breath

  287. to all living things

  288. appoint someone

  289. over this community

  290. to go out

  291. and come in before them

  292. and one who will lead them out

  293. and bring them in

  294. so the Lord's people

  295. will not be like sheep

  296. without a shepherd.

  297. After the death of Moses,

  298. the children of Israel

  299. were sheep without a shepherd.

  300. And Moses' prayer, of course,

  301. is answered in the man

  302. by the name of Joshua.

  303. And now according to Matthew 11,

  304. John the Baptist

  305. was the greatest of the prophets.

  306. This privileged messenger

  307. sent to prepare the way

  308. of the Messiah.

  309. And so in a sense,

  310. John the Baptist

  311. is a shepherd of the people

  312. pointing them to the Messiah.

  313. But here we are

  314. and what has just happened?

  315. John the Baptist

  316. has been executed.

  317. He's just been killed.

  318. Do you see

  319. how this is the closing

  320. of one chapter

  321. and the opening

  322. of a new chapter?

  323. That final Old Testament prophet,

  324. John the Baptist,

  325. has now died

  326. and he's just passed off the scene

  327. after fulfilling

  328. his God-called commission

  329. to prepare the way

  330. of the Messiah.

  331. And here we have

  332. Jesus who is stepping ashore

  333. as the one true shepherd

  334. of Israel.

  335. And in Matthew 14,

  336. we see this as a turning point.

  337. Jesus is now

  338. the new Moses.

  339. Jesus is now

  340. the new Joshua.

  341. Jesus is now,

  342. if you will,

  343. the new John the Baptist

  344. who will lead his people

  345. down straight paths

  346. of repentance and faith.

  347. Jesus Christ,

  348. the Supreme Shepherd of Israel

  349. with great compassion

  350. and tenderness

  351. and love

  352. in his heart

  353. now steps ashore

  354. to the people.

  355. What a marvelous scene

  356. this must have been.

  357. The apostles tell us

  358. that in his compassion,

  359. Jesus sees this vast multitude

  360. without direction,

  361. without purpose,

  362. without a leader,

  363. and so he comes ashore.

  364. And I love this.

  365. Mark chapter 6 tells us

    Mark 6 chapter mention

  366. he begins to teach them.

  367. In Jewish literature,

  368. the feeding of Israel

  369. is often associated

  370. with their being taught

  371. the Word of God.

  372. And so here is

  373. the Supreme Shepherd

  374. of Israel

  375. coming forth

  376. beginning to feed

  377. His people

  378. by teaching them

  379. the Word of God.

  380. The sheep

  381. who have no shepherd

  382. now have a shepherd

  383. and He begins

  384. to feed them.

  385. What a beautiful picture.

  386. Now we move on

  387. in the text

  388. that we find

  389. physically

  390. there is

  391. scarce

  392. provision

  393. for the multitude.

  394. The synoptic Gospels

  395. Matthew,

  396. Mark,

  397. and Luke

  398. refer to this

  399. miracle

  400. as taking place

  401. in the evening.

  402. It's

  403. supper time.

  404. It's

  405. the evening

  406. meal time.

  407. It's

  408. dinner time

  409. as

  410. my grandmother

  411. would call it.

  412. Notice verse 15.

  413. Now when it was

  414. evening.

  415. So here we are.

  416. Jesus and His disciples.

  417. We know there's

  418. somewhere

  419. around the city

  420. of Bethsaida

  421. on the northwestern

  422. shore

  423. of the Sea of Galilee.

  424. This hillside

  425. is covered in grass.

  426. So this is taking place

  427. at some point

  428. between March

  429. or April.

  430. The disciples

  431. are seeing

  432. this enormous crowd.

  433. They come to Jesus

  434. and make

  435. at what appears

  436. to be

  437. a very reasonable

  438. request.

  439. Jesus

  440. send the crowds

  441. away into the villages

  442. that they may

  443. buy food

  444. for themselves.

  445. themselves.

  446. However,

  447. with a bit of

  448. closer examination,

  449. we see

  450. that this

  451. statement

  452. by the disciples

  453. loses fact

  454. that

  455. Jesus

  456. standing

  457. before them

  458. is the

  459. Good Shepherd.

  460. And all

  461. the miracles

  462. that proceeded

  463. in the days

  464. ahead

  465. showing

  466. and demonstrating

  467. that He

  468. would provide,

  469. the disciples

  470. seem to forget.

  471. And they're

  472. looking at

  473. the physicality

  474. of the situation.

  475. And in contrast

  476. to the disciples'

  477. suggestion

  478. that the people

  479. should go

  480. buy food

  481. for themselves,

  482. verse 16,

  483. Jesus looks at

  484. them and says,

  485. no,

  486. you give them

  487. something to eat.

  488. This simple

  489. command

  490. assumes

  491. the disciples

  492. should serve

  493. as extensions

  494. of His

  495. miracle

  496. working

  497. power.

  498. Oh,

  499. how easily

  500. the disciples

  501. had forgotten

  502. just

  503. a few

  504. days ago

  505. when they

  506. went into

  507. the villages

  508. and performed

  509. miracles.

  510. But the

  511. disciples

  512. understand

  513. Jesus'

  514. command

  515. in terms

  516. of what

  517. they themselves

  518. are capable

  519. of doing.

  520. What do

  521. the disciples

  522. say?

  523. What's their

  524. response?

  525. Jesus,

  526. should we

  527. leave and

  528. purchase

  529. 200 denarii

  530. worth of

  531. bread?

  532. They're

  533. automatically

  534. thinking

  535. in physical

  536. terminology.

  537. It would

  538. take 200

  539. denarii

  540. to feed

  541. this many

  542. people.

  543. Jesus,

  544. one denarius

  545. was the

  546. equivalent

  547. of one

  548. day's

  549. wages.

  550. So,

  551. 200 denarii

  552. would be

  553. worth about

  554. eight months

  555. worth of

  556. wages.

  557. We don't

  558. know if

  559. they had

  560. this much

  561. money with

  562. them,

  563. or it's

  564. a hypothetical

  565. question,

  566. as was

  567. often given

  568. to Jesus,

  569. Jesus,

  570. you've

  571. lost your

  572. mind.

  573. Can you

  574. just see

  575. Peter shaking

  576. his head

  577. and throwing

  578. up his arms

  579. in the air?

  580. Jesus,

  581. you've lost

  582. it.

  583. You've

  584. gone crazy.

  585. We don't

  586. have enough

  587. money to

  588. feed these

  589. people.

  590. Now,

  591. just to be

  592. clear,

  593. there's not

  594. 5,000 people

  595. here.

  596. But the

  597. numbers

  598. qualified in

  599. the statement

  600. that there

  601. are 5,000

  602. men.

  603. So,

  604. it obviously

  605. does not

  606. include the

  607. women,

  608. the wives,

  609. the mothers,

  610. the sisters,

  611. etc.,

  612. who were

  613. there among

  614. them,

  615. which probably

  616. equaled around

  617. 5,000.

  618. It also

  619. doesn't include

  620. the vast

  621. multitude of

  622. children who

  623. also would

  624. have been

  625. there,

  626. which would

  627. have numbered

  628. around 10,000

  629. to 15,000.

  630. In other

  631. words,

  632. my friends,

  633. this is an

  634. enormous crowd

  635. and the

  636. disciples are

  637. looking out

  638. over at

  639. what is

  640. probably

  641. about 25,000

  642. people and

  643. they're saying,

  644. Jesus,

  645. you've lost

  646. your mind.

  647. We do not

  648. have enough

  649. money to

  650. feed them.

  651. And so

  652. in the story,

  653. we leave

  654. the disciples

  655. with their

  656. hands in

  657. their empty

  658. pockets,

  659. trying to

  660. figure out

  661. how are we

  662. going to

  663. provide for

  664. these people.

  665. And that

  666. brings us to

  667. the fourth

  668. point of

  669. this event,

  670. sufficiency

  671. found only

  672. in Christ.

  673. Notice

  674. verse 17.

  675. The

  676. disciples

  677. come back

  678. to Jesus

  679. with a

  680. boy's

  681. dinner.

  682. dinner.

  683. We have

  684. here only

  685. five loaves

  686. of bread

  687. and two

  688. fish.

  689. Immediately,

  690. Jesus says,

  691. organize the

  692. people and

  693. have them

  694. sit down

  695. on the

  696. grass.

  697. Now, I want

  698. you to

  699. notice

  700. verse 19,

  701. this phrase,

  702. he directed

  703. the people

  704. to sit

  705. down on

  706. the grass.

  707. to sit

  708. down in

  709. this culture

  710. for this

  711. type of

  712. meal,

  713. pointed to

  714. the fact

  715. that this

  716. was going

  717. to be a

  718. banquet

  719. meal.

  720. This is

  721. not a

  722. usual

  723. meal.

  724. Jesus is

  725. preparing for

  726. them a

  727. banquet.

  728. This is a

  729. celebration

  730. meal.

  731. meal.

  732. The

  733. banquet

  734. meal

  735. given

  736. by their

  737. king

  738. in honor

  739. of the

  740. arrival

  741. of his

  742. kingdom.

  743. And then

  744. verse 19,

  745. our Lord

  746. takes five

  747. loaves of

  748. bread and

  749. two fish

  750. into his

  751. hands and

  752. he gazes

  753. into the

  754. heavens.

  755. We're told

  756. not to

  757. the content

  758. of his

  759. prayer.

  760. We can

  761. imagine

  762. with our

  763. imagination

  764. that perhaps

  765. it's the

  766. common

  767. table

  768. prayer

  769. of

  770. Judaism.

  771. Praise

  772. be to

  773. you,

  774. O Lord

  775. our God,

  776. King of

  777. the world,

  778. who makes

  779. bread to

  780. come down

  781. from the

  782. earth and

  783. who provides

  784. for all

  785. that you

  786. have

  787. created.

  788. Perhaps

  789. that was

  790. what he

  791. said.

  792. We

  793. don't

  794. know.

  795. But what

  796. I love,

  797. if I could

  798. give a

  799. footnote

  800. here,

  801. is I

  802. love the

  803. parallel

  804. between

  805. this

  806. banquet

  807. meal

  808. and the

  809. one he

  810. will share

  811. in the

  812. coming days

  813. with his

  814. disciples in

  815. the upper

  816. room before

  817. he is

  818. crucified.

  819. Both

  820. accounts

  821. take on

  822. the same

  823. sequence

  824. of events.

  825. Taking

  826. bread,

  827. blessing

  828. bread,

  829. breaking

  830. the bread,

  831. and giving

  832. the bread

  833. to the

  834. disciples.

  835. And so

  836. with these

  837. five loaves

  838. and two

  839. fish,

  840. which are

  841. completely

  842. inadequate

  843. to feed

  844. the

  845. thousands

  846. of

  847. people,

  848. in the

  849. hands

  850. of

  851. Jesus,

  852. sufficiency

  853. is found.

  854. After

  855. blessing

  856. the food,

  857. notice what

  858. it says

  859. in verse

  860. 19,

  861. he gave

  862. them to

  863. the

  864. disciples.

  865. Which is

  866. best seen

  867. as Jesus

  868. is continually,

  869. constantly,

  870. unceasingly

  871. giving bread

  872. to the

  873. disciples.

  874. As they

  875. distribute

  876. what has

  877. been given,

  878. they come

  879. back and

  880. return for

  881. more and

  882. more and

  883. more and

  884. more.

  885. Listen,

  886. my friends,

  887. Jesus is a

  888. bottomless

  889. well of

  890. sufficiency,

  891. mercy for

  892. every single

  893. need that

  894. we have.

  895. Isn't the

  896. story of

  897. Scripture

  898. that our

  899. Lord again

  900. and again

  901. lavishes

  902. grace upon

  903. grace and

  904. hope upon

  905. hope and

  906. love upon

  907. love and

  908. bread upon

  909. bread upon

  910. His

  911. children.

  912. children.

  913. Here is

  914. their

  915. king,

  916. their

  917. shepherd,

  918. spreading a

  919. banquet

  920. celebration

  921. meal on

  922. this grassy

  923. hillside.

  924. Not in the

  925. glittering halls

  926. of a palace,

  927. but among

  928. ordinary,

  929. common,

  930. ordinary

  931. people.

  932. Why?

  933. Why?

  934. Because He

  935. wants them

  936. to know

  937. that their

  938. shepherd

  939. has arrived.

  940. Now, I want

  941. you to notice

  942. the conclusion

  943. here.

  944. It involves

  945. three

  946. statements

  947. as we

  948. see

  949. satisfaction

  950. fulfilled

  951. in Christ.

  952. What does

  953. it say

  954. happens

  955. next?

  956. Verse 20,

  957. they were

  958. satisfied.

  959. They were

  960. satisfied.

  961. One of the

  962. great biblical

  963. images of

  964. joy in the

  965. eternal kingdom

  966. is a

  967. banquet

  968. where the

  969. people eat

  970. as much

  971. as they

  972. wish to

  973. eat.

  974. Don't you

  975. wish you

  976. could do

  977. that now?

  978. There is a

  979. marvelous

  980. passage

  981. in Isaiah

    Isaiah 25:6–9

  982. chapter 25

  983. verses 6

  984. through 9.

  985. On this

  986. mountain,

  987. the Lord

  988. Almighty

  989. will prepare

  990. a feast

  991. of rich

  992. food

  993. for all

  994. peoples,

  995. a banquet

  996. of aged

  997. wine,

  998. the best

  999. meats,

  1000. and the

  1001. finest of

  1002. wines.

  1003. On this

  1004. mountain,

  1005. He will

  1006. destroy the

  1007. shroud

  1008. that

  1009. enfolds

  1010. all peoples,

  1011. the sheet

  1012. that covers

  1013. all nations.

  1014. He will

  1015. swallow up

  1016. death

  1017. forever.

  1018. The

  1019. sovereign

  1020. Lord

  1021. will wipe

  1022. away the

  1023. tears

  1024. from all

  1025. faces.

  1026. He will

  1027. remove the

  1028. people's

  1029. disgrace

  1030. from all

  1031. the earth.

  1032. The Lord

  1033. has spoken.

  1034. In that

  1035. day,

  1036. it says,

  1037. they will

  1038. say,

  1039. surely this

  1040. is our

  1041. God.

  1042. We

  1043. trusted in

  1044. Him.

  1045. And He

  1046. saved us.

  1047. This is the

  1048. Lord.

  1049. We trusted

  1050. in Him.

  1051. Let us

  1052. rejoice and

  1053. be glad

  1054. in His

  1055. salvation.

  1056. compassion.

  1057. Listen,

  1058. my friends,

  1059. the meal

  1060. here that

  1061. Jesus

  1062. provided is

  1063. not a

  1064. snack that

  1065. tides them

  1066. over until

  1067. they can go

  1068. into the

  1069. villages and

  1070. buy for

  1071. themselves

  1072. food.

  1073. The bread

  1074. that Jesus

  1075. gives

  1076. satisfies

  1077. the soul

  1078. and is an

  1079. expression of

  1080. His compassion

  1081. and it's

  1082. given in

  1083. such measure

  1084. that there

  1085. are baskets

  1086. left over.

  1087. Notice

  1088. verse 20.

  1089. The disciples

  1090. pick up

  1091. twelve basketfuls

  1092. of broken

  1093. pieces that

  1094. were left

  1095. over.

  1096. I think

  1097. it's perhaps

  1098. a bit

  1099. misleading if

  1100. we try to

  1101. go into the

  1102. symbolism of

  1103. why there

  1104. were twelve

  1105. baskets and

  1106. all of the

  1107. rest of it.

  1108. I think

  1109. the emphasis

  1110. here in

  1111. the text

  1112. is on the

  1113. superabundance

  1114. of the

  1115. sufficiency

  1116. and satisfaction

  1117. that is only

  1118. found in

  1119. Jesus Christ.

  1120. Do you

  1121. remember in

  1122. the wilderness

  1123. wanderings,

  1124. as we've

  1125. already heard

  1126. this morning,

  1127. the children

  1128. of Israel

  1129. wandering around

  1130. for forty

  1131. years,

  1132. every single

  1133. morning they

  1134. would go

  1135. outside of

  1136. their homes

  1137. and they

  1138. had to pick

  1139. up manna

  1140. off of the

  1141. ground.

  1142. Every single

  1143. morning.

  1144. And if they

  1145. did not eat

  1146. that,

  1147. it began

  1148. to grow

  1149. old and

  1150. stale and

  1151. moldy and

  1152. bugs would

  1153. consume it.

  1154. The next

  1155. morning,

  1156. they had to

  1157. go out and

  1158. gather the

  1159. manna again.

  1160. But the

  1161. bread that

  1162. Jesus

  1163. provides,

  1164. the abundance

  1165. Jesus supplies

  1166. in knowing

  1167. Him is

  1168. enough.

  1169. What is

  1170. He saying

  1171. to these

  1172. people in

  1173. Galilee?

  1174. He's saying,

  1175. I am

  1176. better than

  1177. Moses.

  1178. I am

  1179. better than

  1180. Joshua.

  1181. I am

  1182. better than

  1183. Ezekiel and

  1184. John the

  1185. Baptist.

  1186. I am

  1187. enough for

  1188. every need

  1189. that you

  1190. have.

  1191. And then

  1192. notice verse

  1193. 21,

  1194. there were

  1195. five thousand

  1196. men.

  1197. The women and

  1198. the children

  1199. ate right

  1200. along with

  1201. the men.

  1202. Sometimes

  1203. what's

  1204. interesting,

  1205. friends,

  1206. is what's

  1207. not in

  1208. the text.

  1209. And here

  1210. we see

  1211. something

  1212. missing.

  1213. There's no

  1214. mention as

  1215. to the

  1216. crowd's

  1217. reaction.

  1218. Throughout the

  1219. Gospel accounts

  1220. and all the

  1221. miracles that

  1222. are recorded

  1223. for us by

  1224. our Lord,

  1225. there always

  1226. seems to be

  1227. a reaction

  1228. of amazement,

  1229. it says,

  1230. or astonishment,

  1231. it says.

  1232. But you see,

  1233. this miracle is

  1234. not confirmed

  1235. by the

  1236. crowd's

  1237. reaction,

  1238. but by a

  1239. description of

  1240. what happened.

  1241. Here,

  1242. you have

  1243. five thousand

  1244. men are

  1245. fed and

  1246. satisfied,

  1247. and there

  1248. were

  1249. leftovers.

  1250. Very quickly,

  1251. now that we're

  1252. at the end,

  1253. let me just

  1254. simply give

  1255. you a couple

  1256. themes here

  1257. that we've

  1258. picked up on.

  1259. First of all,

  1260. this massive

  1261. miracle reveals

  1262. to us

  1263. something of

  1264. the greatness

  1265. of Jesus.

  1266. all the

  1267. miracles of

  1268. Moses and

  1269. Joshua and

  1270. Elijah and

  1271. Elisha and

  1272. John the

  1273. Baptist,

  1274. even if you

  1275. will,

  1276. they pale in

  1277. comparison.

  1278. Do you remember

  1279. what I told you

  1280. at the beginning?

  1281. John the

  1282. Baptist had

  1283. been executed

  1284. as a signal

  1285. of the closing

  1286. of one chapter

  1287. and the opening

  1288. of a new.

  1289. Jesus is seen

  1290. here as

  1291. Israel's

  1292. final,

  1293. complete,

  1294. great

  1295. shepherd.

  1296. Jesus is seen

  1297. here,

  1298. my friends,

  1299. as our

  1300. great

  1301. shepherd.

  1302. Hebrews reveals

  1303. to us that

  1304. he's God's

  1305. final word.

  1306. God has

  1307. promised

  1308. to send

  1309. a shepherd

  1310. for his

  1311. people,

  1312. and now

  1313. he's giving

  1314. his people

  1315. bread and

  1316. fish.

  1317. Another theme

  1318. that we learn

  1319. from the

  1320. disciples is

  1321. simply this,

  1322. I am

  1323. always

  1324. inadequate

  1325. for the

  1326. task that

  1327. Jesus has

  1328. for me.

  1329. Always.

  1330. Sometimes

  1331. we're

  1332. overwhelmed,

  1333. aren't we,

  1334. at the

  1335. task that

  1336. Jesus has

  1337. for us,

  1338. or the

  1339. calling to

  1340. which he

  1341. has called

  1342. us to.

  1343. And just

  1344. like the

  1345. disciples,

  1346. when asked

  1347. to do

  1348. something,

  1349. or to say

  1350. something,

  1351. or to go

  1352. somewhere,

  1353. on behalf

  1354. of our

  1355. Lord,

  1356. we stand

  1357. with our

  1358. hands in

  1359. our pockets

  1360. trying to

  1361. find the

  1362. money to

  1363. do it.

  1364. Jesus,

  1365. I can't

  1366. speak,

  1367. Moses said.

  1368. I can't

  1369. go back

  1370. to Egypt.

  1371. I stutter

  1372. when I

  1373. speak.

  1374. Isaiah,

  1375. woe is

  1376. me,

  1377. for I'm

  1378. a man of

  1379. unclean

  1380. lips.

  1381. God,

  1382. I can't

  1383. go tell

  1384. them.

  1385. David,

  1386. have mercy

  1387. upon me.

  1388. Oh God,

  1389. I am a

  1390. sinner.

  1391. The Apostle

  1392. Paul,

  1393. I am the

  1394. chief of

  1395. sinners.

  1396. Every

  1397. person God

  1398. calls in

  1399. Scripture

  1400. recognizes

  1401. themselves

  1402. as inadequate

  1403. for the

  1404. task to

  1405. which they

  1406. are called.

  1407. But oh,

  1408. the Apostle

  1409. Paul reminds

  1410. us in

  1411. 2 Corinthians

  1412. 3,

  1413. not that

  1414. we are

  1415. sufficient

  1416. in

  1417. ourselves

  1418. to claim

  1419. anything

  1420. is coming

  1421. from us,

  1422. but our

  1423. sufficiency

  1424. is from

  1425. God.

  1426. Listen,

  1427. folks,

  1428. if God

  1429. has called

  1430. you to do

  1431. something,

  1432. if God

  1433. has called

  1434. you to

  1435. say

  1436. something,

  1437. if God

  1438. has asked

  1439. you to

  1440. go

  1441. somewhere,

  1442. I promise

  1443. you,

  1444. on the

  1445. authority

  1446. of His

  1447. Word,

  1448. that He

  1449. will

  1450. super

  1451. abundantly

  1452. be sufficient

  1453. and supply

  1454. for whatever

  1455. you need.

  1456. And finally,

  1457. Jesus is

  1458. always,

  1459. always,

  1460. my friends,

  1461. more than

  1462. adequate

  1463. in every

  1464. task

  1465. and in

  1466. every challenge

  1467. that we

  1468. face.

  1469. Ephesians

    Ephesians 3:20

  1470. chapter 3

  1471. verse 20

  1472. tells us,

  1473. now to

  1474. Him who

  1475. is able

  1476. to do

  1477. far more

  1478. abundantly

  1479. than all

  1480. that we

  1481. can ask

  1482. or think

  1483. according to

  1484. the power

  1485. at work

  1486. within us.

  1487. We are

  1488. completely

  1489. inadequate

  1490. for every

  1491. single thing

  1492. to satisfy

  1493. the people.

  1494. Do you

  1495. want to

  1496. share the

  1497. Gospel

  1498. with

  1499. Kerageline

  1500. and to

  1501. go out

  1502. from here

  1503. to the

  1504. surrounding

  1505. villages

  1506. and towns

  1507. and areas?

  1508. Do you

  1509. want

  1510. Kerageline

  1511. Baptist

  1512. Church

  1513. to make

  1514. a difference

  1515. in the

  1516. community

  1517. and among

  1518. the people?

  1519. I dare say

  1520. we would all

  1521. say amen

  1522. to that

  1523. desire.

  1524. Let me

  1525. tell you,

  1526. you are

  1527. completely

  1528. inadequate

  1529. to do

  1530. any of

  1531. it.

  1532. But oh

  1533. my,

  1534. the glorious

  1535. good news

  1536. is that

  1537. Jesus Christ

  1538. the Son of

  1539. God

  1540. has come

  1541. in flesh,

  1542. robed

  1543. Himself

  1544. like us

  1545. to make

  1546. us sufficient

  1547. for every

  1548. task that

  1549. we have

  1550. to which

  1551. we are

  1552. called to.

  1553. He has

  1554. went to the

  1555. cross and

  1556. substituted

  1557. Himself.

  1558. He has

  1559. risen from

  1560. the dead

  1561. and now

  1562. He reigns

  1563. as the

  1564. glorious

  1565. sovereign

  1566. of the

  1567. universe.

  1568. He is

  1569. soon

  1570. returning

  1571. for His

  1572. people

  1573. to set

  1574. up His

  1575. eternal

  1576. kingdom.

  1577. My

  1578. friends,

  1579. we

  1580. win.

  1581. So we

  1582. go

  1583. with the

  1584. good news

  1585. of the

  1586. gospel.

  1587. Depend

  1588. upon Him.

  1589. Look to

  1590. Him.

  1591. Cling to

  1592. Him.

  1593. Trust

  1594. Him.

  1595. and He

  1596. will

  1597. satisfy

  1598. you

  1599. with

  1600. eternal

  1601. pleasure

  1602. and

  1603. eternal

  1604. joy.

  1605. What a

  1606. beautiful

  1607. story

  1608. of His

  1609. sufficiency

  1610. and His

  1611. adequacy

  1612. for all

  1613. of our

  1614. lives.

  1615. Let's

  1616. pray together.

  1617. Our

  1618. Father,

  1619. we thank

  1620. You for

  1621. our time

  1622. this morning

  1623. in Your

  1624. Word.

  1625. what

  1626. glorious

  1627. good news

  1628. that we

  1629. have in

  1630. the

  1631. gospel.

  1632. What

  1633. glorious

  1634. good news

  1635. we have

  1636. in the

  1637. sufficiency

  1638. of Christ

  1639. for all

  1640. of our

  1641. needs.

  1642. Father,

  1643. what a

  1644. privilege it

  1645. is to be

  1646. here this

  1647. morning and

  1648. to worship

  1649. You with

  1650. brothers and

  1651. sisters in

  1652. Christ.

  1653. And I

  1654. pray,

  1655. Father,

  1656. that the

  1657. good news

  1658. to us

  1659. this morning

  1660. would so

  1661. equip us

  1662. for the

  1663. task ahead

  1664. that we

  1665. would find

  1666. and discover

  1667. our complete

  1668. sufficiency

  1669. is only

  1670. in You.

  1671. We thank

  1672. You this

  1673. morning for

  1674. our time.

  1675. We pray in

  1676. Jesus' name and

  1677. for His sake.

  1678. Amen.

  1679. Amen.

  1680. Amen.

  1681. Thank you, Dustin.

  1682. and what

  1683. an encouragement

  1684. it is to us

  1685. when we

  1686. leave today.

  1687. Thank you.
