  1. If you're new here, or if I'm new to you, it's more than likely.

  2. Like Ralph said, my name's Alan. I'm not the normal preaching pastor here.

  3. I'm not even normally in Ireland. This is new for me.

  4. But Johnny's on sabbatical, so I'm just here for a few months.

  5. And if you want to turn to the book of Colossians, that's where we'll be this summer.

  6. It's page 1182 in your pew Bibles there.

  7. Page 1182. And we'll be in chapter 1, verses 3 through 8 this morning,

  8. looking at Paul's explanation of what it means to be growing in the gospel,

  9. or what it means for the gospel to be growing in us.

  10. So Colossians 1, verses 3 through 8.

    Colossians 1:3–8

  11. I'll read, and then we'll pray, and we'll dig in here.

  12. Paul says in verse 3, he says,

  13. We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you.

  14. Because we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus,

  15. and of the love you have for all God's people.

  16. The faith and love that spring from the hope stored up for you in heaven,

  17. and about which you have already heard in the true message of the gospel that has come to you.

  18. In the same way, the gospel is bearing fruit and growing throughout the whole world.

  19. Just as it has been doing among you since the day you heard it,

  20. and truly understood God's grace.

  21. You learned it from Epaphras, our dear fellow servant,

  22. who is a faithful minister of Christ on our behalf,

  23. and who also told us of your love in the Spirit.

  24. Let's pray.

  25. Father, would you be with us this morning?

  26. Would you be glorified through the proclamation of your word?

  27. Would you open our eyes that we would see,

  28. open our ears that we would hear,

  29. that we would clearly see the truth of the gospel in your scriptures?

  30. Would we not try to change your word to fit our demands for this world?

  31. But would you change us by your Spirit?

  32. Would you conform us more and more to the image of your Son, Jesus Christ?

  33. It's in His name we pray.

  34. Amen.

  35. Alright, we're going to step backwards a little bit this morning.

  36. So, keep your finger or a bookmark in Colossians,

  37. and then I'm going to ask you to go all the way back to Genesis 1.

  38. And if you don't know where that is,

  39. just go to the beginning of your Bible,

  40. and turn the page, and you're there.

  41. Well, you might get a table of contents.

  42. But after the table of contents comes Genesis 1.

  43. It's the very beginning of the Bible.

  44. And Genesis chapters 1 and 2 are what we call the creation account.

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  45. Okay, and if you're not familiar with this part of the Bible, it's okay.

  46. Genesis 1 is going to give you the big picture view of creation.

  47. And then Genesis 2 is going to zoom in.

  48. I'm from Southern California, so I like movie thinking.

  49. Zoom in with the camera real close into the Garden of Eden,

  50. and you're going to see the first two human beings, Adam and Eve,

  51. in the Garden of Eden.

  52. And what we see in the Garden is that God gives three different commands to the first humans.

  53. Okay, the one that's the most well-known is actually the third command.

  54. And that is,

  55. Do not eat of the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil.

  56. Okay, we probably hear that one the most.

  57. Do not eat the forbidden fruit.

  58. But that's the third command in the account of creation.

  59. The one we probably know just a little bit less,

  60. but you might have heard before,

  61. is the command of dominion.

  62. That's the second command.

  63. That mankind, man and woman, together,

  64. they should rule over and care for planet Earth.

  65. They should, in a wise and skillful and loving way,

  66. steward all of this creation that God has given us.

  67. Okay, He created the heavens and the earth.

  68. He created the skies and the seas and the land,

  69. and all the things that are there,

  70. the birds and the fish and the animals.

  71. And then He puts man and woman in charge,

  72. and He says,

  73. now take care of it.

  74. Rule with wisdom and skill,

  75. and take care.

  76. He says to work the garden,

  77. and to take care of it.

  78. Work there literally means to till the land.

  79. Anybody that has ever been in a garden knows you have to work the garden a little bit.

  80. You've got to encourage the growth.

  81. He says work the garden,

  82. and then take care of it.

  83. It means to guard it.

  84. Guard God's creation.

  85. Now that's the second command.

  86. The first command.

  87. We go just to the first half of Genesis 128.

  88. And God simply says in His first command to human beings,

  89. He says,

  90. Be fruitful and increase in number.

  91. Be fruitful and increase in number.

  92. Now we have to think for a moment here what's going on.

  93. Sin has not entered the world through humanity yet.

  94. Adam and Eve are without sin.

  95. So every child they have is born sinless at this point.

  96. So every time they are fruitful and they multiply,

  97. they are increasing God's people on planet earth.

  98. That's the original design.

  99. It was God's design and command

  100. that His people,

  101. and we looked last week at what it means to be His people,

  102. that His people should bear fruit

  103. and increase in number.

  104. That's the original design.

  105. And the problem comes in Genesis 3.

  106. The serpent comes in and he tempts Adam and Eve.

  107. And they clearly violate God's third command

  108. when they eat of the fruit of the forbidden tree.

  109. In Christianity we refer to this as

  110. the account of the temptation in the fall.

  111. Adam and Eve,

  112. they fall.

  113. Sin enters the world through humanity.

  114. And then the Bible teaches that

  115. every human being born of man

  116. from that point forward

  117. is not increasing God's people on planet earth,

  118. but it is increasing sinful humanity.

  119. Every one of Adam's offspring,

  120. they perpetuate the problem of sin.

  121. And so because of the fall,

  122. it is sin which is fruitful

  123. and increases on planet earth.

  124. So God's design

  125. increased His people on planet earth.

  126. The fall results in an increase

  127. in sin instead.

  128. And then one chapter later

  129. we see the devastation that this causes

  130. when Cain and Abel,

  131. brothers,

  132. Adam and Eve's sons,

  133. Cain rises up and attacks his brother Abel

  134. and kills him.

  135. And now think for a moment

  136. what's going on.

  137. God's people are not increasing.

  138. But because of sin,

  139. God's people are turning on each other.

  140. Sin is increasing

  141. at the cost of human life.

  142. God says to Cain,

  143. what have you done?

  144. Your brother's blood

  145. cries out to me from the ground.

  146. And God's first command to humanity

  147. has been not only clearly violated,

  148. but it has turned bestial.

  149. It has turned humans against each other.

  150. I want you to imagine with me,

  151. if you would, for a moment,

  152. Adam and Eve's shame,

  153. their disappointment,

  154. their utter despair

  155. as they watch even their own children

  156. turn on each other

  157. and kill each other,

  158. as they watch the effects of the fall

  159. play out in a way that

  160. God's people are not increasing,

  161. but sin is increasing

  162. at the cost of human life.

  163. And then I want you to consider with me

  164. their shock and their joy

  165. if they could hear Paul's words

  166. in Colossians 1.6.

  167. If they could hear somehow

  168. thousands of years later,

  169. Paul say,

  170. the Gospel is bearing fruit

  171. and growing

  172. throughout the whole world.

  173. You see, what once looked like

  174. a long lost hope for Adam and Eve

  175. had by Paul's day

  176. somehow become a reality.

  177. And that is that the Gospel

  178. was bearing fruit

  179. and increasing the number

  180. of God's people

  181. on planet Earth.

  182. And last week we saw

  183. that Colossae,

  184. who Paul and Timothy

  185. are writing to,

  186. is just this little,

  187. unimpressive town

  188. at the edge of the Roman Empire

  189. who really would have

  190. no reason to think

  191. that anything good

  192. would ever bear fruit

  193. and increase

  194. to the point that

  195. they would receive it.

  196. But Paul asserts

  197. this foundational truth

  198. that somehow,

  199. in his day,

  200. the Gospel is fulfilling

  201. God's original creation design

  202. for humanity.

  203. Somehow,

  204. some way,

  205. from Adam and Eve

  206. to Paul,

  207. the Gospel is

  208. fulfilling God's original design

  209. for humanity.

  210. God is still

  211. increasing his people

  212. on planet Earth

  213. against all odds,

  214. against everything

  215. that it looked like

  216. was wrong

  217. in Genesis 3

  218. and in Genesis 4,

  219. somehow God's made it right

  220. by Paul's day.

  221. And so we naturally

  222. would ask,

  223. well,

  224. how is that possible?

  225. How has God

  226. flipped the script

  227. on sin?

  228. And what Paul's

  229. assuming here,

  230. in a way,

  231. is that the church

  232. of Colossae

  233. realizes that

  234. it's possible

  235. because God

  236. is increasing

  237. his people

  238. through faith.

  239. See,

  240. it's not possible

  241. that two,

  242. even Christian

  243. human beings

  244. have a child

  245. and that person

  246. is born as

  247. a child of God.

  248. Jesus makes it

  249. very clear

  250. in John 3

  251. when he's talking

  252. to Nicodemus,

  253. it's not by

  254. birth of the flesh,

  255. it's not by

  256. will of man

  257. that someone

  258. enters the kingdom

  259. of God,

  260. but it's by being

  261. born again,

  262. born from above,

  263. born of faith.

  264. Paul says,

  265. God's people

  266. are now

  267. a people of faith.

  268. And they're

  269. bearing fruit

  270. and increasing,

  271. not naturally,

  272. but supernaturally,

  273. born from above.

  274. And what Paul's

  275. going to do

  276. in this passage

  277. now is he's

  278. going to talk

  279. about three things.

  280. He's going to say

  281. faith comes

  282. from hearing.

  283. And then he's

  284. going to explain

  285. that faith

  286. leads to loving

  287. and loving

  288. leads to serving.

  289. And what we'll

  290. see is that

  291. as those three

  292. work together,

  293. all of that

  294. brings about

  295. more hearing,

  296. more faith,

  297. more loving,

  298. more serving,

  299. and the gospel

  300. increases God's

  301. people on

  302. planet earth

  303. just like he

  304. designed from

  305. the beginning.

  306. So first of all,

  307. faith comes

  308. from hearing.

  309. Colossians 1,

  310. we'll read

  311. through verses

  312. 3-6 again,

  313. and take note

  314. of faith

  315. and hearing.

  316. We always

  317. thank God,

  318. the Father

  319. of our Lord

  320. Jesus Christ,

  321. verse 3,

  322. Paul says,

  323. when we pray

  324. for you.

  325. But why is

  326. Paul thanking

  327. God when he

  328. prays for them?

  329. Because we

  330. heard of your

  331. faith in

  332. Christ Jesus

  333. and the love

  334. you have

  335. for all

  336. God's people.

  337. The faith

  338. and love

  339. that spring

  340. from the

  341. hope

  342. stored up

  343. for you

  344. in heaven,

  345. about which

  346. you have

  347. heard in

  348. the true

  349. message of

  350. the gospel

  351. that has

  352. come to

  353. you.

  354. In the same

  355. way,

  356. the gospel

  357. is bearing

  358. fruit and

  359. growing throughout

  360. the whole

  361. world,

  362. just as it

  363. has been

  364. doing among

  365. you since

  366. the day

  367. you heard

  368. it and

  369. truly understood

  370. God's grace.

  371. Faith comes

  372. by hearing.

  373. God's people

  374. increase by

  375. having faith

  376. in hearing

  377. in what they

  378. hear in the

  379. message of

  380. the gospel.

  381. So the

  382. true message

  383. of the gospel

  384. came to the

  385. people in

  386. Colossae.

  387. The people

  388. heard the

  389. true message

  390. of the gospel.

  391. The true

  392. message was

  393. about the

  394. hope stored

  395. up for them

  396. in heaven.

  397. I think we

  398. sang it in

  399. the second

  400. or third

  401. song.

  402. The hope

  403. stored up

  404. for us

  405. in heaven,

  406. namely being

  407. Jesus Christ.

  408. And that

  409. this message

  410. led to

  411. faith in

  412. Jesus.

  413. So a few

  414. things to

  415. note.

  416. The word

  417. gospel,

  418. it just

  419. simply means

  420. good news.

  421. Literally

  422. good news

  423. to humanity.

  424. We have

  425. bad news

  426. in Genesis

  427. 3 and 4.

  428. We need

  429. some good

  430. news at

  431. that point.

  432. And by

  433. Paul's day

  434. we have

  435. good news.

  436. That's all

  437. that means.

  438. Good news

  439. to humanity.

  440. So you

  441. can understand

  442. Paul to

  443. be saying

  444. the Colossians

  445. heard the

  446. true message

  447. of the good

  448. news that

  449. had come

  450. to them.

  451. They probably

  452. didn't get a

  453. whole lot of

  454. good news

  455. in Colossae.

  456. So they

  457. probably took

  458. note.

  459. Good news

  460. has come

  461. to humanity.

  462. And then

  463. secondly,

  464. the essence

  465. of this

  466. good news

  467. is that

  468. there is

  469. hope

  470. beyond what

  471. this life

  472. here on

  473. earth has

  474. to offer.

  475. Namely,

  476. that there is

  477. something

  478. greater beyond

  479. this life.

  480. And now,

  481. if you're a

  482. Christian or

  483. if you're

  484. not a

  485. Christian,

  486. we have to

  487. just be honest

  488. with each

  489. other,

  490. there's not a

  491. ton to hope

  492. for here on

  493. planet earth.

  494. There's some

  495. good stuff.

  496. By God's

  497. grace,

  498. the common

  499. grace he's

  500. given us,

  501. there are some

  502. good things on

  503. planet earth.

  504. But if we

  505. really think about

  506. what we're hoping

  507. for in this

  508. life on this

  509. earth,

  510. the list probably

  511. gets pretty short

  512. pretty quickly.

  513. I'm struck being

  514. in Ireland that we

  515. walk past ruins.

  516. We don't have ruins in

  517. the United States.

  518. We're just a couple

  519. hundred years old.

  520. But we walk past

  521. ruins,

  522. we drive past

  523. and we visit

  524. them,

  525. and we call

  526. them ruins.

  527. Do you guys

  528. call them ruins

  529. too?

  530. Is that just,

  531. it's not just

  532. an American thing,

  533. we call them

  534. ruins.

  535. But think,

  536. those ruins

  537. were somebody's

  538. dreams come

  539. true once

  540. upon a time.

  541. Those ruins,

  542. we were at the

  543. Rock of

  544. Castle,

  545. the castle in

  546. Care,

  547. Care Castle.

  548. And we take

  549. a tour and we

  550. just take

  551. pictures and

  552. we say,

  553. oh,

  554. that's really

  555. nice,

  556. these old

  557. rocks.

  558. This was

  559. somebody's

  560. mansion once.

  561. I hope their

  562. hope wasn't in

  563. that rock.

  564. Not that rock.

  565. There's a man

  566. named King Solomon

  567. in Scripture.

  568. He has it all.

  569. He's the third

  570. king of Israel.

  571. He is the

  572. wisest king.

  573. He has all

  574. wisdom.

  575. He is

  576. unbelievably

  577. wealthy.

  578. The wealth

  579. of which you

  580. and I will,

  581. if we're honest

  582. with each other,

  583. we will never

  584. have the kind

  585. of money King

  586. Solomon had.

  587. He owns

  588. cities.

  589. I hope to

  590. own a house.

  591. He owns

  592. cities.

  593. He has

  594. navies at

  595. his command.

  596. Armies at

  597. his command.

  598. orchards.

  599. Everything you

  600. can ever

  601. hope for

  602. here on

  603. planet earth,

  604. King Solomon

  605. has it.

  606. And then

  607. at the end

  608. in Ecclesiastes

  609. 1, he just

  610. writes,

  611. meaningless,

  612. meaningless.

  613. Utterly

  614. meaningless.

  615. Everything

  616. is

  617. meaningless.

  618. And that

  619. phrase is

  620. bad news

  621. if our

  622. only hope

  623. is here on

  624. planet earth.

  625. See,

  626. Solomon, he

  627. realizes he's

  628. going to die.

  629. The navies

  630. will sail at

  631. somebody else's

  632. command.

  633. The armies

  634. will march to

  635. somebody else's

  636. orders.

  637. His money

  638. will go to

  639. his kids,

  640. which he's

  641. looking at.

  642. the cities

  643. will appoint

  644. new rulers.

  645. The people

  646. will get a

  647. new king.

  648. And he'll

  649. be gone.

  650. He says,

  651. it's bad

  652. news.

  653. It's bad

  654. news.

  655. That's why

  656. the gospel

  657. is good

  658. news that

  659. there is

  660. hope beyond

  661. this life.

  662. There's

  663. hope beyond

  664. the here

  665. and now.

  666. And the

  667. good news

  668. about this

  669. hope is

  670. that it's

  671. true.

  672. It's not

  673. fake news,

  674. as we would

  675. say in the

  676. States.

  677. It's true

  678. news in

  679. Jesus Christ.

  680. It's the

  681. true message

  682. of the

  683. gospel.

  684. As one

  685. author notes,

  686. that the

  687. truth of

  688. the gospel

  689. is the

  690. key that

  691. unlocks the

  692. mind from

  693. slavery to

  694. idols,

  695. which we'll

  696. see in a

  697. few weeks.

  698. It's the

  699. light that

  700. dispels the

  701. darkness of

  702. errant

  703. thinking.

  704. It's the

  705. power that

  706. liberates

  707. and delivers

  708. us from

  709. the domain

  710. of darkness,

  711. as Paul said

  712. in Colossians

  713. 1.13,

  714. to the

  715. kingdom of

  716. the beloved

  717. son.

  718. The gospel

  719. is the

  720. true message

  721. of the

  722. true hope

  723. we have

  724. in heaven,

  725. namely

  726. Jesus Christ.

  727. Christ really

  728. lived.

  729. He really

  730. died.

  731. He really

  732. rose again.

  733. He really

  734. ascended to

  735. heaven.

  736. And that's

  737. really where

  738. our hope

  739. is.

  740. God

  741. is the

  742. truth.

  743. And our

  744. faith in

  745. him comes

  746. by hearing.

  747. The people

  748. in Colossians

  749. say they

  750. heard the

  751. good news

  752. of the

  753. hope that

  754. was stored

  755. up for

  756. them in

  757. heaven,

  758. the truth

  759. of Jesus

  760. Christ.

  761. Let me

  762. just pause

  763. here for a

  764. moment and

  765. ask you,

  766. if you're

  767. not a

  768. Christian,

  769. if this

  770. is newer

  771. to you,

  772. I'll just

  773. throw it

  774. out there.

  775. Does this

  776. make sense

  777. to you?

  778. If it

  779. makes sense,

  780. great.

  781. If it

  782. doesn't make

  783. sense,

  784. I'll be in

  785. the back

  786. afterwards,

  787. come see

  788. me and

  789. ask me any

  790. questions you

  791. have.

  792. I'll talk

  793. with you,

  794. one of the

  795. elders will

  796. talk with

  797. you.

  798. It is

  799. eternally

  800. important to

  801. us that

  802. this makes

  803. sense to

  804. you.

  805. And I

  806. know we

  807. just went

  808. fast and

  809. in less

  810. than 20

  811. minutes we

  812. covered the

  813. majority of

  814. scripture.

  815. So I'm

  816. sure you

  817. have questions.

  818. So it

  819. doesn't make

  820. sense,

  821. come and

  822. ask.

  823. If it

  824. does make

  825. sense,

  826. if what we

  827. just covered

  828. so far makes

  829. perfect sense to

  830. let me just be

  831. very pointed

  832. because I

  833. can do

  834. that.

  835. I'm the

  836. visiting

  837. preacher and

  838. just ask

  839. you,

  840. where's

  841. your hope?

  842. Where is

  843. your hope?

  844. Where was

  845. it this

  846. week?

  847. Where has

  848. it been so

  849. far this

  850. year?

  851. Is it in a

  852. promotion?

  853. Is it in an

  854. item?

  855. Is it in a

  856. thing that

  857. moth or rust

  858. are going to

  859. destroy?

  860. Is it in

  861. your children?

  862. Don't put

  863. that burden

  864. on them.

  865. Where is

  866. your hope?

  867. Is your

  868. hope

  869. truly in

  870. Jesus

  871. Christ

  872. in heaven?

  873. It's one

  874. thing to

  875. say it.

  876. It's one

  877. thing to

  878. just kind

  879. of,

  880. yeah,

  881. I hope

  882. in Jesus.

  883. It's a

  884. whole other

  885. thing to

  886. truly have

  887. your hope

  888. in Jesus.

  889. And then

  890. if you

  891. would say,

  892. yeah,

  893. pastor,

  894. absolutely,

  895. my hope

  896. is in

  897. Jesus.

  898. Amen.

  899. Praise

  900. God.

  901. Are you

  902. telling other

  903. people about

  904. it?

  905. Are you

  906. telling other

  907. people about

  908. the hope

  909. you have

  910. stored up

  911. for you

  912. in heaven?

  913. Because to

  914. have good

  915. news,

  916. to have

  917. good news

  918. about

  919. something to

  920. be hopeful

  921. for and to

  922. not share it

  923. with somebody

  924. would be

  925. utterly

  926. despicable.

  927. It'd be a

  928. tragedy.

  929. It'd be

  930. heartbreaking to

  931. find out

  932. somebody had

  933. good news

  934. that you,

  935. you could put

  936. your hope in

  937. and they didn't

  938. share it with

  939. you.

  940. we have

  941. to love

  942. people by

  943. sharing the

  944. good news

  945. of the

  946. gospel.

  947. So faith

  948. comes by

  949. hearing,

  950. but doesn't

  951. stop there.

  952. Paul says

  953. it leads

  954. to loving.

  955. Look at

  956. Colossians 1

  957. with me

  958. again.

  959. Faith

  960. comes by

  961. hearing and

  962. now it's

  963. going to

  964. lead to

  965. loving.

  966. Verse 4,

  967. Paul says

  968. we have

  969. heard of

  970. your faith

  971. in Christ

  972. Jesus and

  973. of the

  974. love you

  975. have for

  976. all God's

  977. people.

  978. And we

  979. just pause

  980. there and

  981. say we've

  982. heard this

  983. before,

  984. haven't we?

  985. God's

  986. people.

  987. Yeah,

  988. we heard

  989. in verse 2,

  990. that's who

  991. he's writing

  992. to,

  993. God's

  994. people in

  995. Colossae,

  996. same phrase.

  997. We heard

  998. the love

  999. you have

  1000. for all

  1001. God's

  1002. people,

  1003. the faith

  1004. and love

  1005. that spring

  1006. from the

  1007. hope stored

  1008. up for you

  1009. in heaven.

  1010. The faith

  1011. and love

  1012. that spring

  1013. from the

  1014. hope stored

  1015. up for you

  1016. in heaven.

  1017. Faith

  1018. comes by

  1019. hearing,

  1020. faith leads

  1021. to loving.

  1022. Okay?

  1023. Now here's

  1024. the deal

  1025. with love.

  1026. I use this

  1027. word all the

  1028. time and I

  1029. don't really

  1030. mean it the

  1031. same way Paul

  1032. means it and

  1033. you probably

  1034. do the same.

  1035. I'll give you

  1036. an example.

  1037. I love

  1038. Irish ice

  1039. cream.

  1040. I absolutely

  1041. if this were,

  1042. you know,

  1043. if I could just

  1044. admit stuff,

  1045. I love

  1046. Irish ice.

  1047. It's incredible.

  1048. We don't have

  1049. obviously Irish

  1050. ice cream in

  1051. America.

  1052. Okay?

  1053. It doesn't

  1054. taste the same.

  1055. You should,

  1056. part of me just

  1057. want you to go

  1058. to America to

  1059. taste how terrible

  1060. the ice cream

  1061. is there and

  1062. then you will

  1063. say I love

  1064. Irish ice cream.

  1065. Here's the

  1066. thing.

  1067. I also say I

  1068. love my kids.

  1069. Right?

  1070. I mean,

  1071. today's Father's

  1072. Day.

  1073. They were so

  1074. sweet.

  1075. They wrote me a

  1076. little card and

  1077. I say I love

  1078. my kids.

  1079. Now,

  1080. I don't mean to

  1081. say that I love

  1082. Irish ice cream in

1083. the same way I love

  1084. my kids.

  1085. Right?

  1086. And I hope they

  1087. know that because

1088. they hear me say I

  1089. love you and they

1090. hear me say I love

  1091. ice cream.

  1092. But if the two

  1093. came down to it,

  1094. I would clearly

  1095. choose my children

  1096. over Irish ice cream.

  1097. Right?

  1098. Why are you laughing?

  1099. I would clearly

  1100. choose my children

  1101. over Irish ice cream.

  1102. But we use that

  1103. word and that's

  1104. okay.

  1105. We don't have any

  1106. ill intents.

  1107. Right?

  1108. We say all kinds

  1109. of things.

  1110. I love this.

  1111. I love that.

  1112. We use the word

  1113. and we mean

  1114. different things.

  1115. That's just how

  1116. language works.

  1117. That's okay.

  1118. But we want to

  1119. pause here and say

  1120. what does Paul mean?

  1121. What does Paul mean

  1122. when he says that

  1123. they have a love

  1124. for each other?

  1125. And thankfully

  1126. Paul defines love

  1127. in the way that

  1128. he's using it

  1129. in scripture

  1130. in a letter to

  1131. another church

  1132. called 1 Corinthians.

  1133. And there he writes

  1134. this incredible

  1135. definition of

  1136. biblical love.

  1137. Okay?

  1138. Love he says

  1139. is patient.

  1140. Love is kind.

  1141. It does not

  1142. envy.

  1143. It does not

  1144. boast.

  1145. It is not

  1146. proud.

  1147. Love does not

  1148. dishonor others.

  1149. It is not

  1150. self-seeking.

  1151. It is not

  1152. easily angered.

  1153. It keeps

  1154. no record

  1155. of wrongs.

  1156. Love does not

  1157. delight in evil

  1158. but rejoices

  1159. with the truth

  1160. that always

  1161. protects,

  1162. always trusts,

  1163. always hopes,

  1164. always perseveres.

  1165. This is Paul's

  1166. definition of love.

  1167. And so if we

  1168. take that

  1169. definition and

  1170. we bring that

  1171. into Colossae,

  1172. I think we can

  1173. start to see why

  1174. he always thanks

  1175. God for the

  1176. people in Colossae

  1177. when he thinks

  1178. of their faith

  1179. and the love

  1180. that has sprung

  1181. from their hope

  1182. in heaven.

  1183. Because he's

  1184. saying when I

  1185. think of the

  1186. church in Colossae,

  1187. I think of a

  1188. people that are

  1189. patient with each

  1190. other.

  1191. A church that is

  1192. kind with each

  1193. other.

  1194. A church that is

  1195. humble and not

  1196. proud of one

  1197. position over

  1198. another.

  1199. He says I'm

  1200. seeing and

  1201. hearing about a

  1202. church that is

  1203. gentle, that is

  1204. forgiving each

  1205. other, that

  1206. rejoices in

  1207. truth.

  1208. A church that

  1209. protects each

  1210. other, that

  1211. trusts in God,

  1212. that hopes for

  1213. heaven and

  1214. perseveres through

  1215. hardship together.

  1216. And when Paul

  1217. defines their love

  1218. as a church for

  1219. each other in

  1220. that way, that

  1221. is absolutely

  1222. something to

  1223. thank God for.

  1224. And that's what

  1225. he's doing.

  1226. He's saying the

  1227. church in

  1228. Colossae

  1229. loves each

  1230. other.

  1231. They heard the

  1232. gospel and the

  1233. hearing turned to

  1234. faith and the

  1235. faith has turned

  1236. to love and this

  1237. church loves each

1238. other in a way that

  1239. all of us would

1240. want to be a part

  1241. of this church.

  1242. And notice it's

  1243. not some private or

  1244. secret or hidden

  1245. love that they

  1246. have.

  1247. It's very

  1248. visible.

  1249. It's visible to

  1250. the point that

  1251. others have seen

  1252. it.

  1253. And they're

  1254. telling each

  1255. other, they're

  1256. telling other

  1257. people about

  1258. the love that

  1259. this group of

  1260. God's people has

  1261. for each other

  1262. right here in

  1263. Colossae.

  1264. And so I'll

  1265. just pause here

  1266. again and I'll

  1267. ask you, how

  1268. are we doing at

  1269. loving others in

  1270. this church?

  1271. Would people

  1272. characterize

  1273. Caragalline Baptist

  1274. Church as a

  1275. church that is

  1276. patient, kind,

  1277. humble, selfless,

  1278. gentle, forgiving,

  1279. rejoicing in

  1280. truth?

  1281. Well, they say,

1282. you've got to go to

  1283. Caragalline Baptist

  1284. Church because they

  1285. protect each other,

  1286. they trust in God,

  1287. they point each other

1288. to the hope that they

  1289. have in Jesus, in

  1290. heaven, and they

  1291. persevere through

  1292. hardship together.

  1293. Because that's what a

  1294. biblical church looks

  1295. like.

1296. If we can look at

  1297. this church and we

  1298. can say, absolutely,

  1299. that's this church,

  1300. praise God.

  1301. Praise God for what

  1302. he's doing through

  1303. his spirit in this

  1304. group, just like in

  1305. Colossae.

1306. If not, then we say,

1307. well, what do we do?

  1308. Well, it's simple, the

  1309. Bible is clear.

1310. We take a step back

1311. and we fix our eyes on

1312. the hope we have in

  1313. heaven, we proclaim the

  1314. gospel to each other,

  1315. we dig into God's

  1316. word together, we get

  1317. into scripture, we

  1318. speak truth to each

  1319. other, we proclaim the

  1320. gospel to each other,

1321. we sing songs of the

  1322. gospel like we're

  1323. doing, we hear the

  1324. truth proclaimed from

  1325. scripture, and we

  1326. huddle up together, and

1327. we dive back into the

  1328. gospel together, and

  1329. that gospel produces

  1330. love through us.

  1331. It bears fruit and

  1332. increases in us.

1333. So if we look around

1334. at our life at all, or

  1335. at the church's life,

1336. and we say, man, we

  1337. should be a more

  1338. loving church, what's

  1339. the solution?

  1340. Paul says the gospel

  1341. is the solution.

  1342. Get into the gospel.

1343. It will fuel our love

  1344. for each other.

1345. And then what Paul says

1346. is, if faith comes by

  1347. hearing, and if faith

  1348. leads to loving, well,

  1349. it's just a logical

  1350. conclusion here, loving

  1351. leads to serving.

  1352. Now here's the

  1353. temptation.

  1354. We're tempted to swap

  1355. the order.

  1356. We're human.

1357. We're tempted to try it

1358. on our own and say,

  1359. here's what I'll do.

1360. In order to be a

  1361. faithful Christian, I'll

1362. start serving, and if I

  1363. serve everybody long

  1364. enough, I'll really start

  1365. loving them.

  1366. And anybody that's ever

  1367. served next to somebody

  1368. for too long knows

1369. that's not going to work.

1370. But we think I'll serve

  1371. long enough, then I'll

1372. start loving them, and if

  1373. I start loving other

  1374. Christians, then I'll

  1375. believe in God.

  1376. And that's tempting, but

  1377. it's absolutely backward.

  1378. Remember, faith comes by

  1379. hearing.

  1380. Faith leads to loving.

  1381. Loving leads to serving.

1382. Paul says in verse 4, he

1383. says that him, Paul and

1384. Timothy, they heard of the

1385. faith in Christ Jesus and the

1386. love that they had for all

  1387. God's people.

1388. Well, how did they hear

  1389. about this?

1390. How did Paul and Timothy

  1391. hear about what's going

1392. on in the church in

  1393. Colossae?

1394. Well, he tells them in

  1395. verse 7.

  1396. You, the church in

  1397. Colossae, you learned it

  1398. from Epaphras.

  1399. Epaphras was trained by

  1400. Paul.

1401. You can see in chapter 4,

  1402. I think verse 7, he was

1403. taught the gospel by Paul.

  1404. He came to Colossae.

  1405. He preaches the gospel

  1406. there.

1407. And then what Paul says is

  1408. he's a fellow servant,

  1409. verse 7, and a faithful

1410. minister of Christ on our

  1411. behalf.

1412. He told us of your love

  1413. in the Spirit.

1414. Now, Paul uses two key

  1415. words there.

1416. He is, Epaphras is a

  1417. servant.

  1418. Literally, word is slave.

  1419. Someone who's in total

  1420. obedience to a master.

1421. Paul says, Epaphras is in

  1422. total obedience to Christ

1423. Jesus for the church in

  1424. Colossae.

  1425. And then he says,

  1426. furthermore, he is a

  1427. minister.

  1428. Epaphras is someone who

1429. attends to the needs of

  1430. another.

1431. In this case, Epaphras is

1432. someone who attends to the

1433. needs of others by delivering

1434. the good news of the hope

1435. that is to be had in Jesus.

1436. He has served and ministered.

  1437. He heard the gospel.

1438. He then went and served them.

  1439. He proclaimed the gospel.

1440. And then they, through the

1441. gospel, start to love each other.

1442. They love each other visibly by

  1443. serving each other.

1444. And all this starts with just

  1445. one person hearing and

  1446. proclaiming the gospel.

  1447. Right?

1448. Epaphras is to the church in

1449. Colossae what Johnny is to the

  1450. church here in Caragalline.

  1451. He heard the gospel.

1452. And then he has been a

  1453. faithful servant and minister

1454. to this church in this city,

1455. in this country, I think around

1456. the world, Johnny has, just

  1457. like Epaphras was.

1458. And it just starts with

  1459. hearing the gospel.

  1460. Somebody told this pastor,

  1461. Johnny, your pastor, somebody

  1462. told him the gospel.

1463. And he heard it and he

  1464. believed.

1465. And then he loved in such a

1466. way that he served by

  1467. proclaiming the gospel.

1468. And what happens is when

  1469. someone faithfully loves and

  1470. serves and ministers to

  1471. others, they too become

  1472. faithful believers.

1473. Think about that word Paul

  1474. just used here.

  1475. Epaphras is a faithful

  1476. servant and minister.

1477. And what do we see last

  1478. week?

  1479. In Colossae there were

  1480. faithful brothers and

  1481. sisters in Christ.

  1482. The gospel is producing

  1483. fruit.

  1484. The gospel is increasing

1485. and growing the number of

  1486. God's people.

  1487. faithful.

1488. I have no doubt that many

1489. of you have been immensely

  1490. blessed as Johnny, like

  1491. Epaphras, has dedicated his

1492. life to serving, to loving,

  1493. to shepherding, to ministering,

1494. many of you through all the

1495. ups and downs of life.

1496. He's given his heart and soul

1497. into this little church, lovingly,

  1498. joyfully.

1499. And praise God that he's got

1500. some time to rest and re-energize

1501. and recharge and you're going

1502. to have a whole new Johnny when

  1503. he comes back.

  1504. I guarantee you he'll be fired

1505. up and ready to go.

1506. And God works through men like

  1507. Johnny.

1508. And he works through men like

  1509. Epaphras.

1510. And you know what's amazing is

1511. he works through men and

  1512. women from Colossae to

1513. Keragoline, from 65 AD to

  1514. 2019.

1515. And we have this incredible

1516. privilege of joining God in

  1517. fulfilling his original design

  1518. for humanity.

1519. We too can proclaim the gospel

  1520. to each other.

1521. We too can be faithful brothers

1522. and sisters who love each other.

1523. Not like we love Irish ice cream,

1524. but how Paul defines love.

1525. And we can love that way too.

1526. We too can serve each other,

1527. not so that we'll be loved by God,

1528. not so that we can try to love each

1529. other, but because we love each

  1530. other.

1531. Why do we love each other?

1532. Because God first loved us.

1533. How do we know God first loved us?

1534. Because he sent his son.

1535. He sent his son to be our

  1536. savior.

1537. And his son lived the life we

  1538. couldn't live.

1539. He died the death we should have

  1540. died.

  1541. He rose again.

  1542. He ascended to heaven.

1543. And our hope is in him in heaven,

  1544. not here on earth.

1545. In closing, I'll just remind you

  1546. that every Christian,

1547. everybody who calls himself a

  1548. Christian, everybody who says,

1549. I have faith in the good news

  1550. of Jesus Christ,

1551. they heard it from somebody else

  1552. first.

  1553. I know I did.

  1554. And I guarantee you,

1555. if you sit down this evening

1556. and you just think through,

1557. how did I ever learn about Jesus?

  1558. You heard it probably.

  1559. You heard it.

1560. Because someone else spoke it.

1561. Someone else spoke the truth

  1562. of the gospel.

  1563. You heard it.

1564. That hearing led to faith.

1565. And so we are also evidence

1566. of the fact that God is,

  1567. through the gospel,

  1568. fulfilling his original design

  1569. for humanity.

1570. And we don't have to be

  1571. clever or creative

1572. or think of unique ways

1573. in which to share the gospel.

1574. We can simply just tell people

  1575. the truth

1576. of what God created the world

  1577. to be,

1578. what happened in Genesis 3 and 4,

1579. and what we are witnesses of today.

  1580. There's a guy that,

1581. in the church I pastored

  1582. back in the States,

  1583. his name was Rick.

1584. And he was a hardworking guy.

1585. He was an auto mechanic.

  1586. Worked his job.

  1587. Loved the Lord.

  1588. Loved his family.

  1589. And told me,

1590. I really want to serve

  1591. in God's kingdom.

1592. As he learned the story of God,

1593. as he saw God's redemptive plan unfolding,

  1594. he said,

1595. how in the world, though,

  1596. could I ever serve

  1597. in God's kingdom?

  1598. And it's interesting,

1599. because all I said is,

  1600. Rick, can you speak?

  1601. And obviously he could.

  1602. He said,

  1603. yeah, I can speak.

  1604. I said, okay.

1605. Well, can you tell people

  1606. about God?

1607. Can you just tell them

  1608. the story of God?

  1609. Well, not perfectly,

1610. but can you read Scripture with them?

  1611. Well, yeah,

1612. I can read Scripture with them.

  1613. Rick ended up becoming

  1614. the overseer

  1615. of our missions group

  1616. at church,

  1617. because he learned

  1618. he could go anywhere

  1619. in the world,

1620. and he could sit with someone,

1621. and even if he didn't

  1622. speak their language,

1623. he could point to Scripture

  1624. and be with them

1625. as they read the story of God,

  1626. as they saw

  1627. and heard

  1628. the good news

  1629. of Jesus Christ.

  1630. Let's join God

  1631. in his mission.

  1632. Let's enjoy

1633. the role that we have,

1634. the place that we are

  1635. in history,

1636. where we get to be a part

  1637. not of increasing sin

  1638. here on planet Earth,

1639. but we get to be a part

  1640. of God fulfilling

  1641. his design

1642. right here on this Earth,

  1643. increasing his people

  1644. through his gospel,

1645. which we have the joy

1646. of proclaiming to each other.

  1647. Amen?

  1648. Let's pray.

  1649. Father,

1650. we thank you so much

  1651. for your gospel.

  1652. God,

  1653. even a short glimpse

  1654. into Genesis 1-4

  1655. just reminds us

  1656. of how amazing

  1657. you created everything

  1658. and how far

  1659. we had fallen.

  1660. Thank you

  1661. for the hope

  1662. we have in heaven.

  1663. thank you

  1664. for the hope

1665. we have in Jesus Christ.

  1666. Thank you

  1667. for sending people

  1668. into our lives

  1669. to speak the gospel

  1670. into our lives.

  1671. Thank you

  1672. for putting us

  1673. in a church

  1674. where we can

  1675. speak the gospel

  1676. to each other,

1677. we can love each other,

1678. we can serve each other,

1679. because we are a family

  1680. that you've created

  1681. through your spirit,

  1682. by your word.

  1683. Thank you

1684. that we get to be a part

  1685. of you fulfilling

  1686. your design

  1687. for creation,

1688. that we get to be a part

  1689. of the increasing number

  1690. of your people

  1691. here in Caroline,

  1692. in Cork,

  1693. in Ireland,

  1694. and beyond.

  1695. Thank you

  1696. that this doesn't

  1697. depend upon us,

  1698. God,

  1699. but this is

  1700. your word

  1701. going out

  1702. by your spirit

  1703. for your glory.

  1704. Amen.

1705. If you'd stand with me,

  1706. we're going to

  1707. close out

  1708. with one song,

  1709. All Creatures

1710. of Our God and King.

  1711. Amen.

  1712. Amen.

  1713. Amen.

  1714. Amen.

  1715. Amen.

  1716. Amen.

  1717. Amen.

  1718. Amen.

  1719. Amen.

  1720. Amen.

  1721. Amen.

  1722. Amen.

  1723. Amen.

  1724. Amen.

  1725. Amen.

  1726. Amen.

  1727. Amen.

  1728. Aši

  1729. Thank you.

  1730. Thank you.

  1731. Thank you.

  1732. Thank you.

  1733. Thank you.

  1734. Thank you.

  1735. Thank you.

  1736. Thank you.
