  1. three. I'll read it out and once I read then I'll just pray for Alan and Alan will

  2. will teach us from from this passage. So verse 15.

  3. The sun is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For in him all things

  4. were created, things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers

  5. or rulers or authorities. All things have been created through him and for him. He is before all

  6. things and in him all things hold together and he is the head of the body, the church. He is the

  7. beginning and the firstborn from among the dead so that in everything he might have the supremacy.

  8. For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him and through him to reconcile to himself

  9. all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood shed on

  10. the cross. Once you were alienated from God and were enemies in your minds because of your evil behavior,

  11. but now he has reconciled you by Christ's physical body through death to present you wholly in his sight

  12. without blemish and free from accusation. If you continue in your faith established and firm and

  13. do not move from the hope held out in the gospel, this is the gospel that you heard and that has been

  14. proclaimed to every creature under heaven and of which I, Paul, have become a servant.

  15. Father God, we thank you for blessing this church with your servant, Alan. We pray for him now that

  16. it would be your words that he speaks to us and your truths that he teaches us. And we pray for each one

  17. of us that we would listen well and learn how to put it into practice into our everyday lives,

  18. that we don't just leave it here on a Sunday and forget about it when we walk out the door,

  19. but that we remember that Jesus is for every day of the week. In Jesus' name, amen.

  20. Thanks, Alan.

  21. All right. Well, it was a dark and stormy night one night on the Sea of Galilee,

  22. and the small boat out there was tossing around in the waves. The winds were whipping, the rain was pouring

  23. down. Being Irish, you can imagine what that's like. The waves were crashing against the sides of the boat.

  24. The fishermen in the boat were panicked. They were experienced men on the sea, but this was a storm

  25. unlike most they'd ever seen. They were panicked, and yet somehow somebody in the boat was sound asleep.

  26. They woke this man in the boat. They said, Jesus, you better get ready because this could be the end.

  27. And Jesus responded, peace, be still. The disciples thought he was talking to them,

  28. but it turned out he was talking to the storm in the sea. The storm stopped. The rain let up.

  29. And the sea calmed.

  30. Who is this Jesus? They asked. That the storms and the seas obey him.

  31. Sometime later, this same man was teaching, and a large crowd had gathered, so large that nobody could

  32. even get to the place where he was teaching. And so some friends of a paralytic, they cut a hole in the

  33. ceiling, and they lowered this paralyzed man down into the room where Jesus was teaching.

  34. Seeing the faith of the man's friends and having pity on the man, he looked at him and he said,

  35. my friend, your sins are forgiven.

  36. And the religious teachers of the day, they thought to themselves. They didn't even say out loud.

  37. They just thought to themselves, who is this Jesus that he thinks he can forgive sins?

  38. And knowing their thoughts, he said, I'll show you that I have the authority to forgive sins.

  39. And he looked at the paralyzed man and he said, get up, take your mat and go home.

  40. And the paralyzed man stood up, picked up his mat and went running out the door, rejoicing and praising God.

  41. Who is this Jesus? They asked.

  42. Who is this Jesus?

  43. Sometime later, this same Jesus was sitting majestically, yet humbly on a donkey.

  44. He was being led into the city of Jerusalem, which had swollen up to 10 times its normal size because of the feast of the Passover that was coming up.

  45. And as this Jesus rode into Jerusalem, the crowds, they lined the streets, they placed their cloaks on the ground,

  46. they waved palm branches, Hosanna in the highest, they said, here is the coming King.

  47. He is the son of David. He's come. He's the Messiah.

  48. He's going to restore Israel to its prominence in the world.

  49. Here is King Jesus.

  50. And as they got in the city, the crowds got excited.

  51. The whole city was stirred up.

  52. Who is this? They asked each other.

  53. This is Jesus was the response.

  54. Who is Jesus?

  55. The question has been asked ever since he walked planet Earth.

  56. Who is Jesus?

  57. In 1994, Life magazine even had on their cover, Jesus.

  58. Who is he?

  59. Musically, everyone from Kanye West to Green Day to Carrie Underwood to even U2 have sung songs about Jesus,

  60. saying who is Jesus and giving their own interpretation.

  61. Jesus is on t-shirts.

  62. There's a Jesus is my homeboy t-shirt out there.

  63. Even the fashion industry is trying to figure out who is this Jesus?

  64. What can I call him?

  65. How should I refer to him?

  66. In fact, a Google search that I did this week in less than one second gave me 6.5 million answers to the question,

  67. who is Jesus?

  68. Who is Jesus?

  69. That's the question Paul sets out to answer here today.

  70. And he does so in the form of a poem or a song.

  71. And as any poem of his day would have gone,

  72. it's got a rise and then a crescendo and a fall with an echo.

  73. And in verses 15-20 of Colossians 1,

  74. Paul answers the question, who is Jesus, via this poem.

  75. And at the very top of it, he says,

  76. He is the one in whom all things hold together.

  77. And as he builds his poem, he's speaking of creation.

  78. He is the image of the invisible God.

  79. The firstborn over all creation.

  80. In him all things were created.

  81. Things in heaven, on earth, visible, invisible,

  82. whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities.

  83. All things have been created through him and for him.

  84. He is before all things.

  85. And then he hits his crescendo.

  86. In him all things hold together.

  87. And he's speaking about creation.

  88. All of creation comes from,

  89. is done by,

  90. was made through,

  91. and for,

  92. Jesus,

  93. who holds it all together.

  94. And then from that point,

  95. he comes down into new creation.

  96. He says,

  97. In Jesus, all things hold together,

  98. including the church.

  99. He says,

  100. He is the head, the body, the church.

  101. He's the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead.

  102. So that in everything,

  103. he might have the supremacy.

  104. For God was pleased

  105. to have all his fullness dwell in him,

  106. and through him to reconcile to himself all things.

  107. Whether things, again,

  108. on earth or in heaven,

  109. by making peace through his blood shed on the cross.

  110. This is Paul's answer to the age-long question,

  111. Who is Jesus?

  112. And there's many answers provided in this little text.

  113. In order to not be here until Monday morning,

  114. we're going to look at three of those answers today.

  115. Okay?

  116. Just three answers in here.

  117. And again,

  118. three of many things that are in this text.

  119. It's packed.

  120. First,

  121. we're just going to look at the fact that

  122. Jesus is the beginning of all creation.

  123. And that's the left side,

  124. or the rise in the poem,

  125. the beginning of all creation.

  126. And he is the beginning of new creation.

  127. Okay?

  128. When we say new creation,

  129. we're talking about Christians.

  130. And we'll unpack that a little bit.

  131. Okay?

  132. So,

  133. in the same way that Jesus is the beginning of all creation,

  134. He's the beginning of new creation.

  135. Paul says in verse 15,

  136. The Son is the image of the invisible God,

  137. the firstborn over all creation.

  138. Now,

  139. He does not mean

  140. He's the first to be created.

  141. We want to be careful there.

  142. That's not what Paul's saying.

  143. He's not the first to be created.

  144. In fact,

  145. the word has nothing to do with birth.

  146. It has everything to do with rank.

  147. He ranks above all creation.

  148. He's the one from whom all creation came to be,

  149. which is why he follows up in verse 17,

  150. with He is before all things.

  151. That is,

  152. all of creation finds its beginning in Jesus.

  153. So,

  154. before there ever was anything that could be called creation,

  155. visible or invisible,

  156. Paul's very,

  157. very sure to cover it all,

  158. visible or invisible,

  159. in heaven or on earth,

  160. before any of that existed,

  161. there was Jesus.

  162. Father,

  163. Son,

  164. and Spirit,

  165. eternally,

  166. one God,

  167. outside of space and time,

  168. Jesus,

  169. the Son of God.

  170. And in a similar way,

  171. to how He's the beginning of creation,

  172. Paul says,

  173. in verse 18,

  174. He's the beginning of new creation.

  175. He's the head of the body,

  176. the church.

  177. He's the beginning,

  178. and again,

  179. we hear the word firstborn,

  180. from among the dead.

  181. Okay,

  182. He's called the firstborn from among the dead,

  183. because the resurrection of the dead is from Him,

  184. and after Him.

  185. Okay,

  186. so Jesus,

  187. He's in heaven,

  188. He actually exists outside of space and time,

  189. He creates heaven,

  190. He creates earth,

  191. He creates everything that's visible and invisible,

  192. and then,

  193. everything goes wrong because of sin,

  194. and so Jesus takes on bodily form,

  195. we call that the incarnation.

  196. He's born a virgin birth through Mary,

  197. and He takes on flesh,

  198. the incarnation.

  199. He lives a perfect life,

  200. that's important to know.

  201. He never sins.

  202. He fulfills the law in its entirety,

  203. and yet lays down His life in the crucifixion.

  204. He allows Himself to be strapped to a cross,

  205. and He bears the wrath of God that we were supposed to take,

  206. the crucifixion.

  207. Then three days later,

  208. He rises from the dead,

  209. and it's a historical fact.

  210. Even non-Christian historians write that this man,

  211. Jesus,

  212. was crucified,

  213. and three days later,

  214. He rose from the dead,

  215. the firstborn of new creation.

  216. That's why Paul will say in 2 Corinthians 5,

  217. if anyone is in Christ,

  218. he is a new creation.

  219. So before creation,

  220. there's Jesus,

  221. and in the same way,

  222. before there's ever a single Christian,

  223. there is Jesus.

  224. So now we ask,

  225. why does Paul say he's the head of the church?

  226. What does it have to do with Christians?

  227. Well, the church is simply the community of all true believers.

  228. It's a community of all true believers for all time.

  229. Believers in what?

  230. Believers in who Jesus is.

  231. That He is a Son of God,

  232. that He's creator of all things,

  233. by Him,

  234. through Him,

  235. for Him,

  236. that He came to earth in the incarnation,

  237. He died on the cross in the crucifixion,

  238. He rose again in the resurrection.

  239. Anybody who proclaims to believe that,

  240. we say Christian.

  241. And then the church is the gathering of the Christians.

  242. So the global church,

  243. for all time and in all places,

  244. would be the gathering of all Christians

  245. who've ever lived coming together.

  246. That would be the church.

  247. But then that gets broken down into smaller churches.

  248. So we're at Karageline Baptist Church,

  249. the local gathering here in Karageline

  250. of true believers in Christ.

  251. Jesus is the head of this church,

  252. just like He's head of every Christian church.

  253. So Paul says,

  254. He's the head of the local church,

  255. He's the head of the global church,

  256. and in this case in Colossians,

  257. he's speaking to the church in Colossae,

  258. and he's speaking truth that still applies to us

  259. right here in Karageline Baptist Church.

  260. So there's creation,

  261. and then there's new creation.

  262. And new creation doesn't happen without Jesus Christ.

  263. It's important to know that,

  264. that you cannot become a new creation

  265. without Jesus Christ.

  266. And it starts with His resurrection.

  267. That's why the resurrection is so important.

  268. You can't say,

  269. I'm not sure if Jesus rose from the dead

  270. and claimed to be a Christian.

  271. He's the firstborn from the dead,

  272. and everything we claim

  273. follows His resurrection from the grave.

  274. So if we say we're a Christian,

  275. if we say we're a new creation,

  276. we're claiming,

  277. my identity is in Christ,

  278. who rose from the dead.

  279. And I too, like Him,

  280. will rise from the dead someday.

  281. Ladies who have been married,

  282. they probably get this new identity concept

  283. better than any of us.

  284. A lady who gets married

  285. and takes the last name of her husband,

  286. she literally oftentimes gets a new identity.

  287. I know that my wife,

  288. we've been married 16 years,

  289. she got a new driver's license,

  290. she got a new passport,

  291. and it no longer said Cassie Howard,

  292. it said Cassie Giles.

  293. And nowadays, if you said,

  294. hey, Mrs. Howard,

  295. she'd probably think you were talking to her mom.

  296. But if you said Mrs. Giles,

  297. she would turn.

  298. She's a new person.

  299. She has a new identity.

  300. We had a lady get married

  301. at a place I once worked,

  302. and a friend of mine,

  303. he was trying to congratulate her

  304. when she got back from her honeymoon.

  305. He called her up

  306. and he asked for her by her new last name,

  307. is Mrs. Jenks there.

  308. And the poor lady,

  309. she put him on hold

  310. and was scrolling through the roster

  311. looking for Mrs. Jenks

  312. until it finally dawned on her

  313. he was asking for her.

  314. She had a new identity

  315. and then she,

  316. I remember she picked up the phone

  317. and kind of changed her voice a little bit

  318. and said,

  319. oh, this is Mrs. Jenks.

  320. It was a funny thing,

  321. but it was just an illustration

  322. of the fact that

  323. that because of her marriage

  324. she had a new identity.

  325. Her new identity was Mrs. Jenks.

  326. That didn't happen without a start.

  327. It didn't happen without a marriage.

  328. In the same way

  329. a Christian is a new creation,

  330. has a new identity,

  331. it begins with Christ.

  332. So in the same way

  333. all of creation began with Christ,

  334. all of new creation

  335. begins with Jesus Christ.

  336. But more than that,

  337. Paul adds that Jesus is

  338. the one through whom

  339. all things came into existence

  340. and the one through whom

  341. Christians came to be.

  342. From him and through him.

  343. In verse 16,

  344. Paul says,

  345. In him all things were created,

  346. things in heaven and on earth,

  347. visible and invisible,

  348. thrones or powers

  349. or rulers or authorities,

  350. all things have been created

  351. through him.

  352. And it's worth noting,

  353. he also says,

  354. for him.

  355. Through him and for him.

  356. And that's all of creation.

  357. Nothing is exempt.

  358. There's nothing you can see

  359. and there's nothing that's invisible.

  360. There's nothing here on earth.

  361. And think about this,

  362. there's nothing in heaven

  363. that came to be

  364. apart from Jesus Christ.

  365. In the same way that all things

  366. have been created

  367. through him

  368. and for him

  369. and creation owes its existence

  370. to him,

  371. so too all Christians

  372. owe our existence

  373. to Jesus Christ.

  374. Paul says in verse 19,

  375. God was pleased

  376. to have his fullness

  377. dwell in him

  378. and through him

  379. to reconcile

  380. to himself

  381. all things

  382. by making peace

  383. through his blood

  384. shed on the cross.

  385. And when Paul says

  386. all things were created

  387. in him

  388. and through him,

  389. he's clearly saying

  390. there's nothing that came to be

  391. without coming through his work.

  392. And in the same way,

  393. you cannot become a Christian

  394. unless it's through Christ.

  395. You can't bring yourself

  396. into Christianity

  397. in the same way

  398. that you couldn't bring yourself

  399. to be born into this world.

  400. I can guarantee you

  401. there's nobody in here

  402. whose first memory was

  403. I'm going to be born today.

  404. I'm going to make myself

  405. a person today.

  406. Nobody,

  407. if you have that memory,

  408. come see me afterwards.

  409. We're going to get you on TV.

  410. You're going to be

  411. a multi-millionaire.

  412. We're all going to know

  413. you're lying

  414. because nobody has the memory

  415. of I'm going to make myself

  416. a person today.

  417. In the same way,

  418. you couldn't just

  419. make yourself a person.

  420. You can't just make yourself

  421. a Christian apart from Christ.

  422. There's a movie,

  423. Aladdin,

  424. that just came out.

  425. Has anybody seen

  426. the remake of Aladdin?

  427. My kids have seen it.

  428. Some have seen it.

  429. I haven't gotten to see

  430. the remake,

  431. but I asked the kids

  432. and they assured me

  433. it hasn't changed much.

  434. And the story of Aladdin

  435. is interesting

  436. because he's got to be

  437. a prince,

  438. but he's not born

  439. from a king.

  440. And in order to marry

  441. the princess,

  442. he's got to be a prince.

  443. And so since he wasn't

  444. born from a king,

  445. he's not a prince.

  446. So either someone

  447. has to change the rules

  448. or he's got to get someone

  449. to prince him,

  450. so to speak.

  451. And I feel like

  452. somewhere a prince

  453. would be happy for me

  454. saying prince somebody,

  455. but Aladdin needs

  456. someone to prince him.

  457. He's either got to be

  458. adopted by a king

  459. or in his story

  460. he finds a genie

  461. and he makes a wish

  462. and what's the wish?

  463. Make me a prince.

  464. He knows he can't

  465. just prince himself.

  466. He can't just decide

  467. to become a prince.

  468. He needs someone

  469. to make him a prince.

  470. And it's just an echo

  471. of what happens

  472. in Christianity

  473. is you can't just say

  474. Christian now,

  475. but we need someone

  476. to make us a Christian

  477. and that's through Jesus

  478. that that happens.

  479. You can't be a Christian

  480. apart from the saving grace

  481. of Jesus Christ.

  482. There's no other way

  483. to heaven

  484. but through Jesus.

  485. Muhammad cannot get you

  486. into eternal paradise.

  487. Buddha can't help you

  488. get enough karma

  489. to get there.

  490. You cannot prince yourself.

  491. You cannot Christianize yourself.

  492. You cannot do enough good works.

  493. You can't earn enough merit.

  494. You can't pay enough penance

  495. to make yourself a Christian.

  496. It is only by Jesus,

  497. in Jesus,

  498. through Jesus,

  499. and for Jesus

  500. that we become

  501. new creation in Christ.

  502. all of creation

  503. comes into existence

  504. through Jesus,

  505. for Jesus,

  506. and in the same way

  507. all Christians

  508. are brought into His body

  509. by Him

  510. and through Him

  511. and for Him.

  512. And finally,

  513. Paul says

  514. He's also the one

  515. who holds

  516. all of creation together.

  517. He's the one

  518. who holds us

  519. all together

  520. as well.

  521. The crescendo there

  522. in the second half

  523. of verse 17

  524. is loud and bold

  525. because of the way

  526. the poem is written.

  527. That this is

  528. the truth.

  529. This is the point

  530. that Paul's trying to make.

  531. That in Him

  532. all things hold together.

  533. And if you think

  534. of the structure

  535. of the poem,

  536. in Him

  537. all of creation

  538. is held together

  539. and in Him

  540. all of Christianity

  541. is held together.

  542. In Him

  543. all of the universe

  544. is held together

  545. and in Him

  546. all of the church

  547. is held together.

  548. In Him

  549. all of planet Earth

  550. is held together

  551. and in Him

  552. every Christian

  553. is held together.

  554. Both and all

  555. are held together

  556. by Him.

  557. He holds together

  558. all things.

  559. Science tells us

  560. there are at least

  561. 30 cosmological parameters

  562. that hold the universe together.

  563. 30 that we have figured out.

  564. So if you think about

  565. the universe

  566. which we are

  567. a tiny part of.

  568. If you think about

  569. the universe

  570. and you think about

  571. 30 cosmic dials

  572. that have to be

  573. just the right setting

  574. for the universe

  575. to exist.

  576. Science tells us

  577. that the odds

  578. the precision

  579. I should say

  580. of those dials

  581. that needs to be set

  582. to 1 in

  583. 5300 million

  584. billion

  585. billion

  586. billion

  587. billion

  588. billion

  589. that's the precision

  590. by which

  591. those 30

  592. cosmological dials

  593. have to be set

  594. to

  595. for the universe

  596. to maintain

  597. its existence

  598. if one dial

  599. just accidentally

  600. gets nudged

  601. a little bit

  602. the entire universe

  603. implodes on itself.

  604. It's an enormous universe.

  605. It's a finely tuned universe.

  606. It's a well designed universe.

  607. And so too is planet Earth.

  608. One scientist,

  609. he writes,

  610. Earth's location

  611. in the universe,

  612. its size,

  613. its composition,

  614. its structure,

  615. its atmosphere,

  616. its temperature,

  617. its internal dynamics,

  618. its many intricate cycles

  619. that are essential

  620. to life

  621. testify to the degree

  622. to which

  623. our planet

  624. is exquisitely

  625. and precariously

  626. balanced.

  627. that if Earth

  628. were just to be

  629. shifted a little bit

  630. off its axis,

  631. it's game over.

  632. If we're just being

  633. moved a little bit

  634. closer to the sun

  635. or brought further

  636. from the sun,

  637. that's the end of humanity.

  638. It's precariously

  639. balanced.

  640. And Paul says,

  641. it's being held there

  642. by Jesus.

  643. But he doesn't

  644. stop at creation.

  645. He also comes

  646. to new creation.

  647. He says,

  648. if Jesus is holding

  649. the universe together

  650. like that,

  651. and if Jesus

  652. is holding

  653. planet Earth

  654. together

  655. the way He is,

  656. then aren't we

  657. okay to rest

  658. in His finished work

  659. on our behalf?

  660. Won't He

  661. hold us

  662. together

  663. better than

  664. we could even

  665. hold ourselves

  666. together?

  667. Amen.

  668. Paul takes

  669. this poem

  670. and he immediately

  671. applies it here

  672. in verses 21-23.

  673. He says,

  674. once we were

  675. alienated and

  676. hostile in mind

  677. doing evil deeds.

  678. But Jesus

  679. has reconciled us

  680. in His body

  681. of flesh

  682. by His death

  683. in order that

  684. we might be

  685. presented holy

  686. and blameless

  687. and above reproach

  688. if we continue

  689. in the faith

  690. stable

  691. and steadfast,

  692. not shifting

  693. from the hope

  694. of the gospel.

  695. And again,

  696. the gospel is

  697. the true message

  698. that Jesus

  699. Christ

  700. really is

  701. the beginning

  702. of all creation.

  703. That in Him

  704. and through Him

  705. and for Him

  706. all things

  707. were created

  708. and that He

  709. holds all things

  710. together.

  711. And then the same

  712. for new creation

  713. that the beginning

  714. of Christianity

  715. is His resurrection

  716. from the dead

  717. and that in Him

  718. and through Him

  719. and for Him

  720. people are brought

  721. to new life

  722. in Christ

  723. and that He

  724. holds His church

  725. together.

  726. Paul says

  727. we should never

  728. shift from that.

  729. We would be foolish

  730. to decide

  731. we're going to

  732. step outside

  733. of our universe

  734. to just someone

  735. that we've come up

  736. with on our own.

  737. And the same way

  738. we would be foolish

  739. to step outside

  740. of the universe

  741. that Jesus holds

  742. together,

  743. we would be foolish

  744. to step outside

  745. of the faith

  746. that He authors

  747. and He perfects

  748. and He holds together.

  749. We are not the beginning

  750. of all creation.

  751. Jesus is.

  752. We are not the ones

  753. by which all things

  754. came into existence.

  755. Jesus is.

  756. I think we would all

  757. agree we are not

  758. holding the universe

  759. together.

  760. Jesus is.

  761. And if we really

  762. want to be honest

  763. with ourselves,

  764. we don't even hold

  765. our own lives together

  766. very well, do we?

  767. But Jesus does.

  768. I've been in

  769. Karagaline

  770. for just under

  771. a month now.

  772. So I don't know

  773. every detail

  774. of every life

  775. in here.

  776. I couldn't

  777. know that much.

  778. But I can make

  779. some educated guesses

  780. because it's very

  781. similar to a lot

  782. of churches

  783. because we're

  784. similar people

  785. all across the planet.

  786. And we have people

  787. from all around

  788. the planet

  789. in here in this room.

  790. So we can make

  791. some guesses.

  792. Educated guesses.

  793. I would say

  794. you're probably busy.

  795. You're probably tired.

  796. If you're single,

  797. you're probably hoping

  798. that you'll find

  799. that perfect person.

  800. If you're married,

  801. you've already found

  802. out that they

  803. weren't perfect.

  804. I know because

  805. you didn't marry

  806. my wife.

  807. That's the only...

  808. Maybe you want

  809. kids, but for some

  810. reason God hasn't

  811. given them to you

  812. yet.

  813. And if you have

  814. kids, they're

  815. growing up too fast.

  816. And you feel like

  817. you haven't quite

  818. given them everything

  819. that they need

  820. for the life

  821. that they're not

  822. to be called

  823. out to yet.

  824. If you don't

  825. have a job,

  826. you're probably

  827. losing hope

  828. you'll ever find one.

  829. If you have a job,

  830. you wish you

  831. had a different job.

  832. Work is stressful

  833. and exhausting.

  834. If you have

  835. co-workers,

  836. they probably

  837. anger you.

  838. Your boss is

  839. probably too hard

  840. to please.

  841. If you're lonely,

  842. you probably wish

  843. you had more friends.

  844. If you've had

  845. friends, you've

  846. probably been burned

  847. and betrayed

  848. by friends.

  849. If you're alive

  850. and you're breathing

  851. today, your life

  852. at times probably

  853. seems like it is

  854. spiraling out of

  855. control.

  856. Probably not

  857. every day.

  858. Probably some

  859. days are great.

  860. But there's

  861. probably times

  862. where you just

  863. go, I can't

  864. even hold my

  865. own life together.

  866. If you're not

  867. a Christian,

  868. you probably

  869. don't know

  870. where to turn.

  871. If you are

  872. a Christian,

  873. perhaps you've

  874. even forgotten

  875. the Savior you

  876. first came to

  877. love.

  878. You probably

  879. sit there and

  880. say, give me

  881. something practical,

  882. Pastor.

  883. Give me

  884. something I can

  885. do.

  886. Give me some

  887. way to fix this

  888. mess I've made.

  889. Give me some

  890. way to get my

  891. life under

  892. control to

  893. hold all

  894. these moving

  895. parts, to

  896. properly juggle

  897. all the things

  898. that I'm

  899. juggling.

  900. You'd probably

  901. say, give me

  902. some hope.

  903. We sang the

  904. song earlier,

  905. our hope is

  906. built on

  907. nothing less

  908. than Jesus'

  909. blood and

  910. righteousness.

  911. Our hope is

  912. in heaven.

  913. Our hope

  914. created heaven.

  915. Our hope

  916. came to earth.

  917. Our hope

  918. lived the perfect

  919. life that none

  920. of us could

  921. ever live.

  922. Our hope

  923. died the death

  924. that all of us

  925. should have

  926. died with the

  927. wrath of God

  928. being poured

  929. out on him.

  930. Our hope

  931. went into a

  932. tomb.

  933. Our hope

  934. rose from

  935. that grave

  936. three days

  937. later.

  938. Our hope

  939. ascended back

  940. into heaven.

  941. Our hope

  942. is in Jesus.

  943. He is in

  944. heaven.

  945. He is preparing

  946. a place for

  947. us and he

  948. holds all

  949. things together

  950. for his

  951. glory.

  952. Our hope

  953. is to fix

  954. our eyes on

  955. Jesus.

  956. To read

  957. about him

  958. in scripture.

  959. To talk

  960. about him

  961. with others.

  962. To worship

  963. him in song.

  964. To pray

  965. through him

  966. and to rest

  967. in his

  968. finished work

  969. on our

  970. behalf.

  971. That's our

  972. hope.

  973. Who is

  974. Jesus?

  975. He is the

  976. image of the

  977. invisible God.

  978. He is the

  979. first born

  980. over all

  981. creation.

  982. He is the

  983. creator of all

  984. things.

  985. He is

  986. before all

  987. things and

  988. in him all

  989. things hold

  990. together.

  991. And because

  992. in him all

  993. things hold

  994. together and

  995. because he

  996. rose from the

  997. dead he is

  998. the head of

  999. the body of

  1000. the church.

  1001. He is the

  1002. beginning and

  1003. the first born

  1004. from among the

  1005. dead so that in

  1006. everything he

  1007. might have

  1008. supremacy.

  1009. And God was

  1010. pleased to have

  1011. all his fullness

  1012. dwell in him and

  1013. through him to

  1014. reconcile to

  1015. himself all

  1016. things including

  1017. you and I.

  1018. life.

  1019. Therefore let

  1020. us continue in

  1021. the faith.

  1022. Stable and

  1023. steadfast.

  1024. Not shifting from

  1025. the hope we have

  1026. in Jesus.

  1027. That's our call

  1028. this week.

  1029. That's our call

  1030. today.

  1031. That's our call

  1032. this week.

  1033. That's our call

  1034. this year.

  1035. That's our call

  1036. for life is just

  1037. fix our eyes in

  1038. Jesus.

  1039. Our hope is built

  1040. on nothing less.

  1041. Let's pray.

  1042. Amen.

  1043. Amen.

  1044. Amen.

  1045. Amen.

  1046. Amen.

  1047. Amen.

  1048. Amen.

  1049. Amen.

  1050. Amen.

  1051. Amen.

  1052. Amen.

  1053. Amen.

  1054. Amen.

  1055. Amen.

  1056. Father we

  1057. acknowledge that

  1058. when it comes to

  1059. creation we bring

  1060. nothing to the

  1061. table.

  1062. We bring no

  1063. ability to create

  1064. what you have

  1065. created or even

  1066. a fraction thereof.

  1067. We admit that in

  1068. fact we have

  1069. largely ruined your

  1070. creation.

  1071. We have rebelled

  1072. against you.

  1073. We have chosen

  1074. our own way.

  1075. We have shaken

  1076. our fists at you.

  1077. We have squandered

  1078. the gifts that

  1079. you have given us.

  1080. We have placed

  1081. the part of the

  1082. fool.

  1083. We admit God we

  1084. are naturally

  1085. enemies of yours

  1086. by birth.

  1087. We are estranged

  1088. from you by our

  1089. own sins.

  1090. And that we are

  1091. utterly unable to

  1092. do anything about

  1093. it.

  1094. Yet Lord we

  1095. praise you that you

1096. did not leave us in

  1097. our sins.

  1098. That you sent Jesus

  1099. to rescue us.

  1100. We praise you that

  1101. you created all

  1102. things by him and

  1103. through him and

  1104. for him.

  1105. And out of your

  1106. love towards us you

  1107. made us a new

  1108. creation by him and

  1109. through him and for

  1110. him.

  1111. We praise you and

  1112. thank you that

  1113. through Jesus Christ

  1114. you hold all things

  1115. together.

  1116. together that every

  1117. breath we take that

  1118. we can even take

  1119. because he holds all

  1120. things together.

  1121. We thank you for

  1122. calling us into new

  1123. life in him.

  1124. Making us a new

  1125. creation.

1126. And we trust that you

  1127. will hold us together

  1128. in him.

1129. That you will hold our

  1130. faith strong and secure

  1131. in him.

  1132. That you will hold

  1133. Kerrigline Baptist

  1134. Church together in

  1135. him.

  1136. That you will hold

  1137. the global church of

  1138. all Christians for all

  1139. time together in him.

  1140. Lord may you never

1141. let us stray from the

1142. hope we have in Jesus.

  1143. Please fill us with

  1144. your spirit and cause

1145. us to serve you this

1146. day as well as this

1147. week and with all of

  1148. our lives.

  1149. For Jesus'

  1150. sake.

  1151. Amen.

  1152. Amen.

  1153. Amen.

  1154. Amen.

  1155. Amen.

  1156. Amen.

  1157. Amen.

  1158. Amen.

  1159. Amen.

  1160. Amen.

  1161. Amen.

  1162. Amen.

  1163. Amen.

  1164. Amen.

  1165. Amen.

  1166. Amen.

  1167. Amen.

  1168. Amen.

  1169. Amen.

  1170. Amen.

  1171. Amen.

  1172. Amen.

  1173. Amen.

  1174. Amen.

  1175. Amen.

  1176. Amen.

  1177. Amen.
