  1. And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus,

  2. giving thanks to God the Father through him. Wives, submit yourselves to your husbands as

  3. is fitting in the Lord. Husbands, love your wives and do not be harsh with them. Children,

  4. obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord. Fathers, do not embitter your children,

  5. or they will become discouraged. Slaves, obey your earthly masters in everything and do it

  6. not only when their eyes are on you and to curry their favor, but with sincerity of heart and

  7. reverence for the Lord. Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord,

  8. not for human masters. Since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward,

  9. it is the Lord Christ you are serving. Anyone who does wrong will be repaid for their wrongs,

  10. and there is no favoritism. Masters, provide your slaves with what is right and fair,

  11. because you know that you also have a master in heaven. Let's pray.

  12. Heavenly Father, we do thank you for your word made available to us so easily in our language.

  13. Thank you for your servant, Alan, for his service to us as a church family this past summer.

  14. Thank you for the work and the preparation that has gone into this morning's message.

  15. We pray that you would bless him by your words as he grapples with us day in and day out.

  16. Help him to speak clearly now to us as one who is speaking your very words.

  17. Help us to listen well and to engage and to be challenged by your word,

  18. so that we will go out as not just hearers of your words, but as doers.

  19. So bless us, we pray as we listen and go out and live it out. In Jesus' name. Amen.

  20. Thank you, Alan.

  21. Well, good morning. It's a pleasure to be here again this morning.

  22. We get close to wrapping up the book of Colossians here, the epistle of Colossians.

  23. Like we said last week, we are heading into the end of the letter where Paul is just getting very practical in his teaching here.

  24. And last week he showed us that our whole life as Christians is really a response to everything that God has done for us through Christ.

  25. We saw that really we respond to the gospel in lives of worship, in song, in word, and in deed.

  26. And then in verse 17, we ended there and we said that would kind of start us off today.

  27. So verse 17 says,

  28. Whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus,

  29. giving thanks to God the Father through Him.

  30. Now, I don't know about you, but when I get to verse 17,

  31. I'm really ready to do anything that God has for me to do.

  32. And I'm a bit adventurous.

  33. I'm a bit of a, you give me the challenge, Lord, I'll get after it.

  34. And so I imagine if I were sitting there listening to Paul,

  35. he were to say, are you ready to do anything?

  36. I'd say, yeah, I'm ready, Paul.

  37. He'd say, okay, are you sure?

  38. Absolutely.

  39. And I would be thinking big thoughts.

  40. And Paul would say, okay, here's what I want you to do.

  41. I want you to go home, okay?

  42. I want you to go to work, okay?

  43. And then Paul would just stare at me.

  44. I'd say, no, Paul, keep going.

  45. Because here's the thing, Paul, I'm an American, so I'm a pioneer.

  46. I'm an adventurous guy.

  47. I'm going to go explore.

  48. I'm going to take over the world, Paul, so tell me what to do.

  49. And he says, yes, Alan, go home.

  50. I can do that.

  51. And then go to work, absolutely.

  52. And I think Paul would say, what are you waiting for?

  53. Go home and go to work.

  54. And it's interesting because sometimes we read Scripture

  55. and we get these thoughts that I'm going to go serve God

  56. in word and deed and anything I do,

  57. it's going to be for the Lord and He's going to call me to something

  58. and it's going to be this big, huge thing.

  59. And Paul says, here's the big, huge thing I want you to do.

  60. I want you to go home and go to work

  61. and glorify God in doing so.

  62. Why would Paul start here?

  63. Why would he call us as believers to respond to all that God has done

  64. by going home and going to work?

  65. Well, note a few things here.

  66. These are some of the most time-consuming,

  67. and I don't mean that in a negative sense,

  68. but these are the most time-consuming relationships in our lives.

  69. This is where we spend our most time,

  70. at home and at work.

  71. These are some of the most sensitive relationships in our lives.

  72. And really, these are the nuts and bolts of our life

  73. as we spend a lot of time and a lot of energy

  74. and a lot of thought at home and at work.

  75. And so Paul kind of says,

  76. this is a bit of the litmus test, if you will,

  77. of everything that he's taught so far in the book of Colossians.

  78. The degree to which the gospel has really taken root in our lives

  79. is seen first and foremost at home and at work.

  80. And so here's what I want to do today.

  81. I want to look at those two parts of our life,

  82. and I want to look at three things.

  83. The ideal, what it should look like according to Scripture.

  84. And then the real, the reality of what this looks like,

  85. and our hope for redemption, our hope for renewal.

  86. The ideal, the real, and our hope for renewal.

  87. So first, the ideal home.

  88. Paul gives us verses 18 through 21.

  89. And then he says,

  90. It starts with wives submitting themselves to their husbands

  91. as is fitting in the Lord.

  92. It gets really quiet when a preacher says that.

  93. I've noticed that.

  94. I've preached this type of passage a few times,

  95. and every woman's got the same look right now.

  96. And every man's trying really hard not to grin.

  97. But it really says right there,

  98. wives submitting themselves to the husbands

  99. as is fitting in the Lord.

  100. And I'll be honest,

  101. I don't like that word submit.

  102. And I don't know many people that like that word submit.

  103. The ladies, I tried hard to look for different translations.

  104. I looked at all the different,

  105. how else can we interpret this word?

  106. It says, here's an option.

  107. Willingly enter into a submissive relationship with someone.

  108. Well, that doesn't sound any better.

  109. Subject yourself to the authority of someone.

  110. Or subordinate yourself.

  111. Those are the options.

  112. It really means submit.

  113. Submit.

  114. Submit yourselves to your husbands.

  115. Now I want to point out what this does not say.

  116. It does not say,

  117. women, submit yourselves to men.

  118. It doesn't say that.

  119. You might hear that argued,

  120. but that's not what it says.

  121. It's talking about one wife submitting herself to one husband

  122. as is fitting in the Lord.

  123. It does not say,

  124. obey.

  125. Notice that.

  126. It's going to say,

  127. for children and slaves,

  128. obey.

  129. It doesn't say that for the wife.

  130. It says,

  131. to submit herself to the Lord

  132. as is fitting,

  133. or to her husband as is fitting in the Lord,

  134. or proper.

  135. And our example is Christ in the garden

  136. on the night of His betrayal.

  137. He says,

  138. Father, please take this cup from me.

  139. Speaking of the cross.

  140. He says,

  141. yet not my will,

  142. or not my plan,

  143. but yours be done.

  144. Showing us an example of perfect submission.

  145. And then Paul says,

  146. this is to be coupled with perfect love by the husband.

  147. Verse 19 says,

  148. Husbands,

  149. love your wives,

  150. and do not be harsh with them.

  151. He says,

  152. husbands,

  153. have a warm regard for,

  154. take pleasure and cherish,

  155. show affection to your wives.

  156. And he says,

  157. do not be harsh.

  158. That's an interesting way of translating that actually,

  159. because you could also say,

  160. the translation could read,

  161. do not make them bitter or sour.

  162. The only other time we get this phrase in Scripture

  163. is Revelation 10.9,

  164. where John is given a scroll to put on his mouth,

  165. and he's told,

  166. at first it will taste really sweet like honey,

  167. but then it will turn sour in your stomach.

  168. It will make you bitter.

  169. It will be harsh on you.

  170. Paul says,

  171. men,

  172. we are not to sour our wives.

  173. We are not to make them become bitter.

  174. The opposite actually is what we're supposed to do.

  175. We're supposed to love our wives and cause them to blossom.

  176. Again,

  177. our example is Christ himself.

  178. In a parallel passage in Ephesians 5,

  179. Paul says,

  180. husbands,

  181. love your wives as Christ loved the church.

  182. In the same way that Christ loved the church,

  183. men are called to love their wives.

  184. In the way that he gave himself up for her.

  185. Cleansing her.

  186. To present her holy and blameless.

  187. That's how we're called to love our wives.

  188. And so this first relationship that Paul sets up

  189. in this ideal sense of a man who loves his wife

  190. the way that Christ loved the church,

  191. and a lady who submits to her husband

  192. in the way that the Lord Christ submitted to the Father

  193. by going to the cross.

  194. This, Paul says,

  195. is the ideal Christian marriage.

  196. This is part of responding to what God has done.

  197. Ladies,

  198. submitting to your husband.

  199. Husbands,

  200. loving your wives.

  201. Then to that,

  202. Paul adds

  203. children obeying their parents.

  204. And fathers encouraging their children.

  205. Verses 20-21.

  206. Children,

  207. children obey your parents in everything.

  208. For this pleases the Lord.

  209. Fathers,

  210. do not embitter your children,

  211. or they will become discouraged.

  212. And the opposite of discouraging a child

  213. is to encourage them.

  214. And Christ is our example once again

  215. as he both obeys his earthly parents

  216. as well as his heavenly Father.

  217. I find it interesting that scriptures say

  218. Jesus obeyed his earthly parents.

  219. If any child

  220. ever had the right

  221. to stand up to mom and dad

  222. and say,

  223. I have a different idea,

  224. it's God incarnate.

  225. And yet he obeyed his parents.

  226. Children,

  227. you really are called to obey your parents.

  228. Even adults,

  229. we're still children,

  230. aren't we?

  231. We still have parents.

  232. In the same way,

  233. Christ,

  234. he encourages,

  235. you could say,

  236. he shepherds his disciples.

  237. He encourages them.

  238. He trains them up.

  239. He's so patient.

  240. He's so loving.

  241. You don't ever get a sense

  242. in the Gospels

  243. of Jesus being harsh

  244. with his disciples.

  245. Even though we read it

  246. and we're going,

  247. come on guys.

  248. Get with the program.

  249. Jesus is so patient with them.

  250. He's so encouraging.

  251. And Paul says,

  252. this is what the Christian home

  253. should look like.

  254. Husbands loving their wives.

  255. Wives submitting to their husbands.

  256. Children obeying.

  257. Fathers encouraging.

  258. Well, what more

  259. could one ask for?

  260. Paul says,

  261. how about,

  262. how about once you've done that at home,

  263. then go to work

  264. and create the ideal work environment.

  265. We say,

  266. well, what does a Christ-centered

  267. work environment look like?

  268. He tells us,

  269. first of all,

  270. in verses 22 through 25,

  271. he says,

  272. slaves,

  273. obey your earthly masters

  274. in everything.

  275. Now,

  276. if we bring that into today's context,

  277. we would say,

  278. employees and employers

  279. would be the language

  280. which we would use.

  281. Employees,

  282. obey your employers

  283. in everything.

  284. Not only when their eye is on you.

  285. And not just to curry their favor.

  286. But with sincerity of heart

  287. and reverence for the Lord.

  288. Again,

  289. our example is found in Christ

  290. who in John 17

  291. says to the Father,

  292. I have brought you glory on earth

  293. by finishing the work

  294. you gave me to do.

  295. Christ is the perfect servant

  296. who obeys in everything.

  297. And then it says,

  298. employers,

  299. do what is right and fair.

  300. In chapter 4,

  301. verse 1.

  302. Masters,

  303. provide your slaves

  304. with what is right and fair

  305. because you know

  306. that you also have

  307. a Master in heaven.

  308. And again,

  309. we look to Christ,

  310. our example,

  311. in 1 John 2.

  312. It says that

  313. He is our advocate

  314. with the Father.

  315. He is the righteous one.

  316. The one who is right

  317. and fair.

  318. So Paul says,

  319. employers,

  320. treat your employees

  321. like Jesus treated us.

  322. Or maybe you're not an employer,

  323. but you have someone

  324. who works under you.

  325. It says to treat that person

  326. in a righteous way.

  327. And so we have

  328. the ideal home

  329. and we have the ideal

  330. work environment.

  331. And Paul has brought us

  332. all the way to this point

  333. where he says,

  334. everything you do

  335. in word and in deed,

  336. do it to the Father,

  337. for the Son,

  338. in the name of the Father,

  339. giving thanks.

  340. And we say,

  341. okay,

  342. tell us what that is.

  343. And he says,

  344. go home

  345. and go to work

  346. and live lives like this.

  347. And we do have to feel

  348. the weight of that

  349. because that really is

  350. the command in Scripture.

  351. There's no linguistic gymnastics

  352. I can do

  353. to get us out of that.

  354. That's really commanded

  355. by Paul.

  356. And yet there's a reason

  357. why Paul has to command

  358. these things,

  359. isn't there?

  360. These aren't natural to us.

  361. This is not the reality

  362. we live in.

  363. And so we have to look

  364. at the reality

  365. of where we're at.

  366. And we just have to be honest

  367. with how these relationships

  368. really are right now.

  369. We also have to recognize

  370. the effect

  371. that the fall has had

  372. on each of these relationships.

  373. When we look at marriage,

  374. we see in Genesis 3.16,

  375. as part of the curse,

  376. God says,

  377. your desire,

  378. ladies,

  379. your desire will be

  380. contrary to,

  381. or your desire will be

  382. to master your husbands.

  383. And he will lord over you.

  384. See,

  385. part of the effects

  386. of the fall

  387. is that for ladies,

  388. it's not natural

  389. to want to submit

  390. to your husband.

  391. It's natural

  392. to want to get over him

  393. and lord over him.

  394. And it's not natural

  395. for him to just love you

  396. the way Christ has loved the church.

  397. It's more natural

  398. for him to lord over you.

  399. And men,

  400. we go from Eve

  401. being flesh of my flesh

  402. and bone of my bone

  403. to that woman you gave me.

  404. And we see right away

  405. in the fall

  406. this fracture in marriage.

  407. If you keep reading

  408. into Genesis 4,

  409. it gets worse

  410. in verse 19

  411. where it says,

  412. Lamech,

  413. he takes two wives.

  414. I think that language

  415. is interesting.

  416. It goes from one man

  417. and one woman

  418. to now this man

  419. who will take two wives.

  420. If you look at their names,

  421. it's even more interesting.

  422. Their names mean

  423. my ornament

  424. and my shade.

  425. So we've gone from

  426. a helpmate

  427. who God has created

  428. to be one man

  429. and one woman

  430. in this beautiful relationship

  431. to women

  432. wanting to lord

  433. over their husbands

  434. or master their husbands

  435. and men just saying,

  436. I will take wives

  437. and I'll make them

  438. my ornament

  439. and my shade.

  440. And the marriage

  441. relationship

  442. is fractured deeply

  443. by sin.

  444. If we're honest,

  445. we can admit

  446. and we have to admit

  447. that our marriages today

  448. are built on centuries

  449. of domination

  450. and manipulation.

  451. Centuries of misunderstanding

  452. and warfare

  453. between men and women.

  454. Two sinners

  455. plunged into

  456. a lifelong struggle.

  457. You say,

  458. how come my spouse

  459. is this way

  460. because they're a sinner

  461. just like you.

  462. And so we have a woman

  463. fighting her sin nature

  464. and we have a man

  465. fighting his sin nature

  466. trying to glorify God

  467. in this marriage.

  468. What about parenting?

  469. What does it really look like

  470. to parent

  471. in a fallen world?

  472. We see right away

  473. Cain kills Abel.

  474. We see very soon

  475. Noah's son

  476. Ham

  477. shaming him.

  478. Even King David's son

  479. Absalom

  480. commits treason

  481. against his father.

  482. That one always blows my mind.

  483. Your dad is King David.

  484. How great would that be?

  485. But Absalom

  486. commits treason

  487. against him.

  488. Why do all these children

  489. sin and obey?

  490. Or sin and disobey?

  491. Why do your children

  492. sin and disobey?

  493. Have you ever thought of that?

  494. Sometimes I think

  495. why would my child sin?

  496. And then I'm reminded

  497. because they're my child.

  498. They've gotten the same

  499. curse that we have on us.

  500. The reality is

  501. it's very difficult

  502. to father and mother children

  503. and it's very difficult

  504. for children to obey

  505. their parents

  506. because of the fall.

  507. The reality today

  508. is in the U.S.

  509. and the United States

  510. an average of five children

  511. per day are killed

  512. because of child abuse.

  513. Five children a day

  514. because of child abuse

  515. in the home.

  516. That's a home

  517. that looks nothing like

  518. what God's called it to be

  519. because of sin.

  520. We say these are

  521. the non-Christian homes.

  522. The Christian homes

  523. are much better.

  524. We have to be careful there,

  525. don't we?

  526. I don't always agree

  527. with the Danish philosopher

  528. Soren Kierkegaard

  529. but I have to agree

  530. with him on this point.

  531. He says

  532. the worst thing in the world

  533. for a child

  534. is not that the child

  535. should have a secular

  536. atheist parent.

  537. He says

  538. that's not the worst thing.

  539. He says

  540. the worst thing in the world

  541. is for a child

  542. to have a father

  543. and I think he's speaking

  544. about his father here

  545. he says

  546. for a child

  547. to have a father

  548. or mother

  549. who profess

  550. all the orthodoxies

  551. of Christianity

  552. yet plainly live lives

  553. that do not show

  554. that they trust in God.

  555. He says

  556. that is far more devastating

  557. to any child

  558. than having a secular

  559. atheistic parent.

  560. God creates children

  561. in his image

  562. and he entrusts

  563. his children

  564. to our cares

  565. as parents

  566. and again

  567. if we're honest

  568. with ourselves

  569. we fail to recognize

  570. how sinful they are

  571. and how hard it is

  572. for them to obey

  573. and we fail to recognize

  574. how discouraging

  575. we can be

  576. towards our children.

  577. And this is the reality

  578. of our homes today

  579. sinners

  580. leading sinners

  581. sinners

  582. born to sinners

  583. sinners wondering

  584. why their offspring

  585. are sinful.

  586. what about our jobs

  587. what is it

  588. what is it like

  589. to work in a fallen world?

  590. There's a very interesting

  591. book called

  592. Working

  593. by a man named

  594. Studs Terkel

  595. that's the greatest name

  596. I think I've ever heard

  597. Studs Terkel

  598. in the introduction

  599. he says this

  600. I find it fascinating

  601. he says

  602. this book

  603. being about work

  604. is by its very nature

  605. about violence

  606. to the spirit

  607. as well to the body.

  608. He says

  609. work is about

  610. ulcers and accidents

  611. shouting matches

  612. and fist fights

  613. work is about

  614. nervous breakdowns

  615. and kicking the dog around

  616. it is above all

  617. or perhaps beneath it all

  618. about daily humiliation

  619. for some

  620. to survive the day

  621. is triumph enough

  622. for the walking wounded

  623. among the great many of us.

  624. He says

  625. that's life in the work world

  626. that's life at work

  627. in a fallen world.

  628. And I know that

  629. sounds terrible

  630. and you think

  631. well that's probably

  632. just the United States

  633. we all know

  634. Americans work way too hard

  635. and they live to work

  636. instead of working to live

  637. I've heard that

  638. so many times.

  639. Interestingly enough

  640. BBC News

  641. ran an article

  642. just last week

  643. that said

  644. burnout is rising

  645. in the land of

  646. work-life balance.

  647. And they go to

  648. Sweden

  649. of all places

  650. the place

  651. known for promoting

  652. the balanced lifestyle

  653. and they show

  654. in their article

  655. how burnout

  656. is just

  657. on the rise

  658. in Sweden.

  659. So even the places

  660. on planet earth

  661. where we're most balanced

  662. the work environment

  663. is brutal to us.

  664. And that's the reality

  665. of life on planet earth.

  666. And so we have

  667. the ideal world

  668. that Paul has called us to

  669. the ideal marriage

  670. and the ideal parenting

  671. and the ideal work environment

  672. and then we can look

  673. at reality

  674. and I don't think

  675. we have to press

  676. too much harder

  677. to recognize

  678. our marriages

  679. aren't ideally

  680. what they should be

  681. our parenting

  682. isn't what it should be

  683. and our work life

  684. isn't what it should be

  685. and so then we have

  686. to pause and ask

  687. how are we supposed

  688. to do this Paul?

  689. How are we really

  690. supposed to pull this off?

  691. How do we go

  692. from real

  693. to ideal?

  694. What is our hope

  695. for renewal?

  696. What Paul says

  697. he says

  698. the key to our hope

  699. is found in this word

  700. that's repeated

  701. seven times

  702. in this passage

  703. and that's this word

  704. Lord.

  705. Turn with me again

  706. and look at verse 17.

  707. Whatever you do

  708. whether in word

  709. or deed

  710. do it all

  711. in the name

  712. of the Lord

  713. Jesus.

  714. Wives submit

  715. to your husbands

  716. verse 18

  717. as is fitting

  718. and proper

  719. in the Lord.

  720. Verse 20

  721. Children obey

  722. your parents

  723. and everything

  724. for this

  725. pleases the Lord.

  726. verse 22

  727. Slaves obey

  728. your earthly masters

  729. in everything

  730. with sincerity

  731. of heart

  732. and reverence

  733. for the Lord.

  734. Verse 23

  735. Whatever you do

  736. work at it

  737. with all your heart

  738. as working

  739. for the Lord.

  740. Verse 24

  741. Since you know

  742. that you will receive

  743. an inheritance

  744. from the Lord

  745. as reward

  746. it is the Lord Christ

  747. you are serving.

  748. Seven times

  749. he uses that word

  750. Lord

  751. and then he finishes

  752. off in chapter 4

  753. verse 1

  754. by referring

  755. to our master

  756. in heaven.

  757. And so what's

  758. Paul's aim here?

  759. What's he doing?

  760. Why is he all of a sudden

  761. just throwing this word

  762. Lord out

  763. seven times

  764. so quickly?

  765. He says

  766. our example

  767. is Christ

  768. and our only hope

  769. for renewal

  770. is to recognize

  771. that he is our example

  772. and he is where

  773. our power comes from.

  774. Our example

  775. and the ability

  776. to go from real

  777. to ideal

  778. is found

  779. in our Lord

  780. Jesus Christ himself.

  781. And you say

  782. well how do we

  783. actually do that?

  784. How do we actually

  785. live out these relationships

  786. under Christ's lordship?

  787. It's to look at

  788. who he is

  789. and what he's done.

  790. And what Paul's doing

  791. is he's echoing

  792. you can make this note

  793. Psalm 130 verse 4

    Psalms 130:4

  794. which just simply says

  795. with God

  796. there is forgiveness

  797. so that we can

  798. with reverence

  799. serve him.

  800. With God

  801. there is forgiveness

  802. so that we can

  803. serve him

  804. with reverence.

  805. And so first

  806. Paul says

  807. first we look to

  808. we look to the cross

  809. and we see

  810. both our faults

  811. and the other person's

  812. struggles.

  813. We admit

  814. and empathize.

  815. We look to the cross

  816. and we see

  817. both our faults

  818. and our spouses

  819. children's

  820. parents

  821. co-workers

  822. struggles.

  823. Why did Christ

  824. have to die

  825. for each of these

  826. people groups?

  827. Because all have sinned

  828. in each of these roles.

  829. husbands

  830. and so we need

  831. to admit

  832. our shortcomings

  833. in this.

  834. We have to own

  835. our part.

  836. Husbands

  837. we have to admit

  838. to our wives

  839. I haven't loved you

  840. very well

  841. and I'm probably

  842. really hard to submit to.

  843. Men

  844. I would challenge you

  845. to say that

  846. to your wife.

  847. Say

  848. I recognize

  849. I'm probably

  850. really hard to submit to.

  851. And she

  852. in grace

  853. will try not to smile

  854. or laugh out loud

  855. and she'll just

  856. you know

  857. thank you honey

  858. is what you'll get.

  859. And then

  860. ladies

  861. you can look

  862. at your husband

  863. and say

  864. you know what

  865. I haven't submitted

  866. to you well

  867. I could probably

  868. be hard to love it

  869. sometimes.

  870. And many say

  871. no absolutely not

  872. it's just all me.

  873. But we can admit

  874. that we haven't

  875. done well

  876. in these roles.

  877. And we can empathize

  878. with the other person

  879. and say

  880. why is it so hard

  881. for my wife

  882. to submit to me

  883. because I'm probably

  884. not loving her

  885. very well.

  886. And wives can say

  887. why isn't he

  888. loving me very well

  889. maybe I'm not

  890. submitting like I should.

  891. And you can look

  892. at your children

  893. and say

  894. why aren't they

  895. obeying me?

  896. And you can probably

  897. think about

  898. when you're a child

  899. and go

  900. man I was a bit

  901. of a rascal

  902. myself wasn't I?

  903. And fathers

  904. you can look

  905. at your children

  906. and when they

  907. do those things

  908. that get you

  909. just about to get

  910. angry you can go

  911. I've done the same

  912. both to my parents

  913. and to my father

  914. in heaven.

  915. We can admit

  916. how we've

  917. fallen short

  918. and then we can

  919. look at our children

  920. and we can love

  921. and encourage them

  922. and say you know

  923. what don't just

  924. obey me because

  925. I'm perfect

  926. because I'm not

  927. perfect.

  928. Obey me because

  929. God's called you

  930. to and he's the

  931. one that we're

  932. obeying.

  933. We tell our kids

  934. all the time

  935. we know we're

  936. not perfect parents.

  937. At some point

  938. we know that

  939. they're going to

  940. go hey my mom

  941. and dad weren't

  942. perfect.

  943. We say yeah

  944. we'll admit that

  945. right now.

  946. We'll call the ball

  947. on that.

  948. When you have

  949. that thought

  950. yes that's true

  951. but we love you

  952. and we're trying

  953. but God loves you

  954. even more.

  955. And you don't

  956. just obey us

  957. for the sake

  958. of obeying us

  959. you obey us

  960. because that's

  961. what God's

  962. called you to do.

  963. But we look

  964. to the cross

  965. and we see

  966. our shortcomings

  967. we admit

  968. those shortcomings

  969. and then we can

  970. empathize with

  971. others.

  972. We can look

  973. at our boss

  974. and say

  975. well that person

  976. drives me crazy

  977. and then we can

  978. think about our

  979. master in heaven

  980. and say I drove

  981. him to the cross.

  982. so we admit

  983. and we empathize

  984. and then secondly

  985. we see where

  986. Christ was perfect

  987. and we admire

  988. his sacrifice.

  989. We see where

  990. Christ was perfect

  991. and we admire

  992. his sacrifice

  993. and this is

  994. one of the

  995. beauties of the

  996. gospel

  997. is his righteousness

  998. is now ours

  999. and his sacrifice

  1000. complete.

  1001. See Jesus

  1002. is the one

  1003. who perfectly

  1004. submits to the

  1005. father

  1006. and then dies

  1007. for the

  1008. unsubmissive.

  1009. He's one

  1010. who perfectly

  1011. loves

  1012. and then dies

  1013. for the

  1014. unloving husband.

  1015. Christ is one

  1016. who perfectly

  1017. obeys

  1018. and then dies

  1019. for the

  1020. disobedient child.

  1021. He's one

  1022. who perfectly

  1023. serves

  1024. and then dies

  1025. for us

  1026. the lazy

  1027. wicked

  1028. servants.

  1029. He is our

  1030. perfectly

  1031. righteous

  1032. master in

  1033. heaven

  1034. and yet

  1035. while we

  1036. were still

  1037. sinners

  1038. Christ

  1039. died for

  1040. us.

  1041. See

  1042. Christianity

  1043. says if

  1044. you truly

  1045. want to

  1046. change

  1047. then you

  1048. have to

  1049. set your

  1050. eyes on

  1051. our perfect

  1052. example

  1053. over and

  1054. over again.

  1055. You have

  1056. to have

  1057. your mind

  1058. renewed

  1059. in the

  1060. knowledge

  1061. of who

  1062. Christ

  1063. is

  1064. and what

  1065. he has

  1066. done.

  1067. And we

  1068. have to

  1069. have our

  1070. affections

  1071. stirred by

  1072. the one

  1073. who has

  1074. done

  1075. everything

  1076. we have

  1077. failed to

  1078. do

  1079. and then

  1080. credited

  1081. that

  1082. perfection

  1083. to our

  1084. account.

  1085. And that

  1086. changes a

  1087. person.

  1088. See,

  1089. men,

  1090. when you

  1091. look at

  1092. your wife,

  1093. yes,

  1094. you see

  1095. this beautiful

  1096. lady who's

  1097. created in

  1098. God's image,

  1099. but you

  1100. also recognize

  1101. how far

  1102. we've

  1103. fallen and

  1104. yet how

  1105. Christ has

  1106. died for

  1107. us,

  1108. His bride.

  1109. Wives,

  1110. when you

  1111. think of

  1112. submitting to

  1113. your husband,

  1114. you think of

  1115. your Lord

  1116. and Savior

  1117. who in

  1118. the garden

  1119. shed sweat

  1120. like blood

  1121. and yet

  1122. submitted to

  1123. the Father.

  1124. God's

  1125. who loved

  1126. perfectly,

  1127. who submitted

  1128. perfectly and

  1129. imputed that

  1130. to our

  1131. account.

  1132. And when you

  1133. get up tomorrow

  1134. morning to go

  1135. to work and

  1136. you think of

  1137. the people I

  1138. have to work

  1139. for, you can

  1140. recognize Christ

  1141. was the perfect

  1142. servant who's

  1143. imputed that

  1144. service to our

  1145. account and

  1146. who's paid the

  1147. price in full for

  1148. all of our

  1149. shortcomings.

  1150. And so we

  1151. admit and we

  1152. empathize and

  1153. we see where

  1154. Christ was

  1155. perfect and we

  1156. admire His

  1157. sacrifice and

  1158. then finally we

  1159. submit to

  1160. Christ's lordship

  1161. and we trust

  1162. His sovereignty.

  1163. We submit to

  1164. His lordship and

  1165. we trust His

  1166. sovereignty.

  1167. He will see us

  1168. through and He

  1169. will be glorified.

  1170. And this is why

  1171. Paul used that

  1172. word seven times,

  1173. Lord, and then

  1174. Master in Heaven.

  1175. See, there's a

  1176. certain amount of

  1177. faith required in

  1178. trusting that we

  1179. aren't just

  1180. submitting to our

  1181. husbands but to

  1182. Christ our Lord.

  1183. That we aren't

  1184. just obeying our

  1185. parents for their

  1186. pleasure but for

  1187. the Lord's.

  1188. We aren't just

  1189. serving our

  1190. masters on earth

  1191. but we are

  1192. serving the Lord

  1193. our Master in

  1194. Heaven who served

  1195. so perfectly for

  1196. us.

  1197. See, as we

  1198. live life under

  1199. Christ's lordship,

  1200. He will see us

  1201. through and He

  1202. will be glorified

  1203. as He continually

  1204. conforms us to

  1205. His image.

  1206. And so we

  1207. strive.

  1208. We absolutely

  1209. strive to obey

  1210. the commands in

  1211. this passage to

  1212. go from the

  1213. reality of where

  1214. our marriages and

  1215. our parenting and

  1216. our work

  1217. relationships are.

  1218. We strive to

  1219. go to the ideal

  1220. where they're

  1221. supposed to be,

  1222. where they're

  1223. commanded to be.

  1224. While we do

  1225. that, we recognize

  1226. where we fall

  1227. short.

  1228. We admit and we

  1229. empathize.

  1230. We look to the

  1231. cross.

  1232. We see the

  1233. penalty for

  1234. these failures

  1235. being paid in

  1236. full and then we

  1237. submit to Christ's

  1238. lordship all over

  1239. again, day by day,

  1240. week by week,

  1241. month by month,

  1242. year by year,

  1243. in word and in

  1244. deed, at home and

  1245. at work.

  1246. Let's pray.

  1247. Father, we come to

  1248. you people who live

  1249. in a broken,

  1250. fallen world.

  1251. We take comfort in

  1252. knowing that even as

1253. we call out to you

  1254. in prayer that you

  1255. can relate to what

  1256. we're going through

  1257. because you've lived

  1258. life in this world.

  1259. We know that you

  1260. submitted perfectly

  1261. at great cost.

  1262. We know that you've

  1263. loved us perfectly

  1264. at great cost.

  1265. We see how you

  1266. obey your Father

  1267. in heaven and we

  1268. long to obey like

  1269. that.

  1270. We long to serve

  1271. you.

  1272. We long to be

  1273. righteous like you.

  1274. We thank you that

  1275. on one hand you

  1276. have credited your

  1277. perfect life to us

  1278. and on the other

  1279. hand we deeply

  1280. apologize that it

  1281. cost you your life.

  1282. would you help us

  1283. Lord to fulfill

  1284. these commands?

  1285. Would you help us

  1286. to live the lives

  1287. you've called us

  1288. to live?

  1289. Would you help the

  1290. ladies as they

  1291. fight their sin

  1292. nature to submit

  1293. to imperfect

  1294. husbands?

  1295. Would you help

  1296. the men as they

  1297. fight their sin

  1298. nature to love

  1299. their wives the

  1300. way you've loved

  1301. us?

  1302. Would you help

  1303. the children Lord

  1304. to obey as they

  1305. are called to obey

  1306. and please you?

  1307. Lord would you

  1308. help us as parents

  1309. as we strive to

  1310. encourage our

  1311. children in the way

  1312. they should go?

  1313. Would you help us

  1314. this afternoon at

  1315. home and would you

  1316. help us tomorrow as

  1317. we go to work?

  1318. Would you help us

1319. to do our best for

  1320. you our master in

  1321. heaven?

  1322. Would you help us

  1323. to work hard not

  1324. just when someone's

  1325. watching but at all

  1326. times knowing that we

  1327. serve you the God

  1328. who has served us

  1329. beyond any way we

  1330. could have ever

  1331. imagined?

1332. help us Lord as we

  1333. go from real to

  1334. ideal keep our eyes

  1335. fixed on Jesus

  1336. in his name we

  1337. pray amen

  1338. I invite you to

  1339. stand with me as

  1340. we'll sing

1341. Jesus my all in all

  1342. as we head towards

  1343. the Lord's table

  1344. and there's just

  1345. that line you are

  1346. my strength when I

  1347. am weak

  1348. for you and just

  1349. myself or else we

1350. can find a way to

  1351. opportunity for me and

1352. work the same for me

1353. to be able to have no

  1354. lunch yet

1355. as we'll be able to

  1356. you

  1357. to be able to
