  1. To be here, I'm looking forward to it.

  2. I feel a little bit under pressure that it's some people's first time, you know,

  3. and I feel under pressure that, you know, that after today you want to come back to church

  4. and hear the sermon and you're not longing to get back to Sunday school.

  5. I was down in Middleton Baptist on the 11th of August

  6. and my two children were invited to come with us

  7. and they opted to stay with Granny.

  8. They said, I'm not going to travel all of the way just to listen to you speak.

  9. We can hear you speak, you know, every day, you know, preaching at us over the dinner table.

  10. So they declined.

  11. So hopefully I don't disappoint those who are joining us for the first time from Sunday school.

  12. But if you'd like to turn in your Bible to the book of Ruth,

  13. So that will go Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy, Joshua,

  14. and then you should find Judges, then Ruth.

  15. And so hopefully on the other page or just before in my Bible,

  16. you should see Judges chapter 21 and verse 25.

    Judges 21 chapter mention

  17. And that's where we're going to begin our reading.

  18. In those days Israel had no king and everyone did as they saw fit.

  19. And in those days when the judges ruled, there was a famine in the land.

  20. And so a man from Bethlehem and Judea, together with his wife and two sons,

  21. went to live for a while in the country of Moab.

  22. The man's name was Elimelech.

  23. His wife's name was Naomi.

  24. And the names of his two sons were Malon and Kilion.

  25. And they were Epaphrites from Bethlehem, Judah.

  26. And they went to Moab and they lived there.

  27. Now Elimelech, Naomi's husband, died.

  28. And she was left with her two sons.

  29. And they married Moabite women, one named Orpha and the other Ruth.

  30. And after they had lived there about ten years, both Malon and Kilion also died.

  31. And Naomi was left without her two sons and her husband.

  32. But when Naomi heard in Moab that the Lord had come to the aid of his people by providing food for them,

  33. she and her daughters-in-law prepared to return home from there.

  34. Amen.

  35. So Ruth is a strange little book.

  36. It's a story of romance.

  37. It's a story of loss.

  38. It's a story of redemption.

  39. And it's also the story of the birth of a king or eventually.

  40. It's a book that sort of ties together the book of Judges and the books of 1 and 2 Samuel.

  41. Well, the kids in Sunday school, they were learning about the succession of kings.

  42. But how did we get to kings?

  43. Well, Ruth helps sort of fill in the narrative.

  44. It also provides us a little bit of a window of what it was like to live during the time,

  45. during the period of the judges.

  46. When you read the judges, you're reading about, I suppose, the judges themselves,

  47. the conquests, the sins of Israel.

  48. But here is a little, you could say, period drama, right in the middle of all of that.

  49. And we even have our own Mr. Darcy.

  50. We have a character called Boaz, who we'll read about later in the coming weeks.

  51. He's not here yet, but he's coming.

  52. But here we have the title this morning of Running on Empty.

  53. We need to know about a God of grace.

  54. But first of all, we need to think about the background to the book of Judges.

  55. So we're going to do a little bit of thinking about that.

  56. I don't know, you don't need to put up your hand,

  57. but I'm sure there are some country and western musical fans about here, I'm sure.

  58. Well, a modern sort of, I don't know if people like Katie Musgraves or not,

  59. but she is quite popular, I think.

  60. But she had this hit song, and it goes like this.

  61. If you save yourself for marriage, you're a bore.

  62. And if you don't save yourself for marriage, you're a horrible person.

  63. If you won't have a drink, then you're a prude.

  64. But they'll call you drunk as soon as you down the first one.

  65. And if you can't lose weight, then you're just fat.

  66. But if you lose too much, you're on crack.

  67. You're damned if you do, and you're damned if you don't.

  68. So you might as well just do whatever it is you want.

  69. So make lots of noise and kiss lots of boys or kiss lots of girls,

  70. if that's something you're into.

  71. When the straight and narrow gets a little too straight,

  72. roll up the joint or don't.

  73. And here's the kicker.

  74. Just follow your arrow wherever it points.

  75. Yes, follow your arrow wherever it points.

  76. And that's basically today's culture,

  77. the overriding arch of what our young people

  78. or what our middle-aged people

  79. or what our old people should do with their lives.

  80. They should just follow their own arrow.

  81. Just do as they see fit.

  82. And so we are no different than the people in the book of Ruth.

  83. We are no different from the people in the book of Judges.

  84. We are following our own arrow.

  85. And so we're the same.

  86. We do as we please.

  87. We live like there is no God.

  88. You know, when we sin, we almost become,

  89. you know, for that moment, a momentary atheist.

  90. We think that we're, you know, God can't see us.

  91. If you're not a Christian here this morning,

  92. I'm quite sure that you live

  93. and you do as you see fit.

  94. I thought I was going to lose my sermon, you know,

  95. as we began to share in the worship.

  96. It's true.

  97. Ireland has no king.

  98. That's not a political statement.

  99. It's a fact.

  100. Great Britain has no king.

  101. The USA has no king.

  102. And by that I mean that no one who can stand up and say,

  103. I am the authority.

  104. I am the person that you must obey,

  105. that you must listen to.

  106. With our idea of democracy and politics

  107. and our ideas of freedom of speech,

  108. which are all great.

  109. But they also have bred in a sense of rebellion

  110. and a sense of we can do what we want to do

  111. just because we can.

  112. A society of rights.

  113. I get to choose.

  114. I get to choose who I am.

  115. I get to choose what I do.

  116. I get to choose how I do it.

  117. And there's nothing that you can do

  118. that can dissuade me from that.

  119. And so that's the world we live in

  120. and that is the world, really,

  121. that we look into in the book of Ruth.

  122. What we really need is a psalm too.

  123. We need the Lord's anointed.

  124. We actually need a true king.

  125. Someone who is the king of kings

  126. and the Lord of lords.

  127. We need to bow to the lordship of Christ.

  128. That's the only solution to our situation.

  129. So the drive to change laws and promote lifestyles

  130. is basically a world ignoring God

  131. in large or small ways

  132. and people doing what is right in their own eyes.

  133. And in the book of Ruth,

  134. there's nothing different here.

  135. Elimelech was not different.

  136. He was the head of the family

  137. and he takes his family

  138. from the land that God had promised

  139. and he takes them to Moab.

  140. And he left Bethlehem.

  141. We all know that story from Bethlehem

  142. from the narrative of the birth of Christ.

  143. It's where Christ was born.

  144. It's the city of David.

  145. It's where King David was born.

  146. And so it means house of bread.

  147. So they literally left the house of food

  148. and they went in search of greener grass.

  149. And you might say,

  150. well, what's wrong with that?

  151. Why is that significant?

  152. What's wrong with them leaving one place

  153. and going to another?

  154. People do it all the time.

  155. But what's interesting about the place

  156. that they went to,

  157. first of all,

  158. it's a place that God said,

  159. these are your enemies.

  160. These are the enemies of Israel.

  161. Have nothing to do with them.

  162. They had a history with Israel

  163. which meant that God wasn't pleased

  164. with the Moabites.

  165. And so going to Moab was a bad idea.

  166. Not only was that,

  167. they were also told

  168. to not intermarry with Moabites.

  169. So it wasn't like just going off

  170. and moving house.

  171. It was like going off and moving house

  172. and going to,

  173. I suppose,

  174. live in Syria.

  175. Going to somewhere where

  176. you're not really liked,

  177. you shouldn't really like them,

  178. and living there.

  179. And everybody else going,

  180. what are you doing that for?

  181. So they went and they were living

  182. in a place that wasn't good for them,

  183. biblically speaking.

  184. Elimelech's name,

  185. ironically,

  186. means that God is king.

  187. Yet,

  188. he doesn't acknowledge God as his king

  189. and he decides that he's going to up sticks

  190. and go to Moab.

  191. And the other context we need to think about

  192. as we look through the book of Judges

  193. is how the book of Judges,

  194. how women are characterized

  195. during this period of the Judges

  196. according to the book of Judges.

  197. And then we have Ruth,

  198. which is very, very different.

  199. I don't know what it's like to be a woman

  200. and I never will know

  201. what it's like to be a woman.

  202. But I certainly don't know

  203. what it was like to be a woman living

  204. in the period of the Judges.

  205. I don't know what it's like

  206. to be a woman today,

  207. but

  208. let's have a look at a few things

  209. of how women were portrayed

  210. during the Judges.

  211. They were people of violence.

  212. They were both victims and perpetrators.

  213. We have Jael,

  214. who takes a tent peg

  215. and she sort of,

  216. quite graphically,

  217. puts it through King Scissor's head.

  218. And Deborah,

  219. she's delighted in this killing

  220. of this evil king.

  221. And Abimelech,

  222. who is the would-be king,

  223. he gets crushed

  224. by a woman using a millstone.

  225. It's quite a graphic idea

  226. how women are being portrayed.

  227. We have the story of Samson and Delilah,

  228. the seductress,

  229. who takes Samson

  230. and breaks him

  231. until they get the secret from him

  232. so that Samson can be captured

  233. by the Philistines.

  234. And then we have this horrible story

  235. of a concubine

  236. who has been brutalized

  237. by the people of Israel.

  238. And so the priest then takes her

  239. and cuts her up

  240. and takes her about

  241. and scatters her body parts

  242. to express the horror

  243. of what was being done

  244. in the land of Israel.

  245. And then we have

  246. the forced marriages

  247. from the young virgins.

  248. It paints a picture

  249. of brutality,

  250. of horror,

  251. and also of the lack of,

  252. you could say,

  253. protection that women had

  254. during that period.

  255. And we see that marked

  256. in the Book of Ruth.

  257. And so that's the context

  258. that we have.

  259. We have no king.

  260. Everybody's doing

  261. as they see fit.

  262. And we have

  263. this very unstable,

  264. unsafe place

  265. for women.

  266. But we start off

  267. in the Book of Ruth

  268. with,

  269. if you like,

  270. our first point.

  271. We start off

  272. with a family

  273. that's full.

  274. It's a happy home.

  275. It says,

  276. in the days

  277. when the judges ruled,

  278. there was a famine

  279. in the land.

  280. So we know

  281. that times are tough.

  282. There was an economic crisis.

  283. There weren't the jobs

  284. for everybody

  285. to avail of.

  286. Things were tough.

  287. And so a man

  288. from Bethlehem,

  289. the house of bread

  290. in Judah,

  291. together with his wife

  292. and two sons,

  293. they went to live

  294. for a while

  295. in the country

  296. of Moab.

  297. And so there's

  298. a few things

  299. we can have here.

  300. We have

  301. Emelech.

  302. He's the man.

  303. He's not named yet.

  304. But he takes his wife

  305. and his two sons.

  306. He's a nuclear family.

  307. He has his,

  308. all of his ducks

  309. in a row.

  310. We're not really

  311. quite sure

  312. why he left.

  313. The early rabbinic

  314. sources say

  315. that Emelech left

  316. basically because

  317. he was selfish.

  318. They said

  319. that he didn't want

  320. to share with people

  321. during the famine,

  322. so he took everything

  323. that he had

  324. and he legged it

  325. to Moab,

  326. selfishly,

  327. because he could.

  328. The text is silent

  329. on why he left,

  330. but we know

  331. that he did leave.

  332. And in leaving,

  333. there is a sense

  334. of disobedience.

  335. He's going to the enemies

  336. of God,

  337. leaving the people

  338. of God,

  339. and he's going.

  340. It's not clear

  341. if Naomi was on board

  342. with the plan,

  343. whether she wanted

  344. to stay or not,

  345. but she doesn't get

  346. a say in the matter.

  347. Emelech leaves

  348. and he takes Naomi

  349. with her

  350. and the two sons

  351. and they have

  352. a full family

  353. and they go

  354. and they spend

  355. a period of time there.

  356. And we're not sure

  357. when it happens,

  358. but it does happen

  359. that Emelech dies.

  360. But if we just

  361. want to back up

  362. and we have a look,

  363. they went to live

  364. for a while.

  365. Now the commentators

  366. and everybody

  367. want to sort of

  368. highlight this,

  369. is that it wasn't

  370. a permanent thought.

  371. They weren't going

  372. to live there forever.

  373. They were only going

  374. to go and stay

  375. for a wee while.

  376. They were only going

  377. to go and stay

  378. a short time.

  379. Maybe they wanted

  380. to see out the famine.

  381. But that's not

  382. what happens.

  383. We think,

  384. look in verse 2

  385. and it says,

  386. and they went to Moab

  387. and they lived there.

  388. It became more

  389. of a permanent fixture

  390. than maybe

  391. they had once thought.

  392. So we have

  393. a full family.

  394. We're not sure

  395. why there was a famine,

  396. but we read

  397. in Deuteronomy 28,

  398. 3, verse 24,

  399. that if the people

  400. of Israel didn't

  401. follow after God,

  402. that God would send

  403. judgments on the land

  404. and one of those

  405. was a famine.

  406. So the text doesn't say

  407. this is a famine

  408. that's been sent

  409. as judgment,

  410. but we can safely assume

  411. that it has that potential

  412. behind it.

  413. He gathers up his family

  414. and he goes to the

  415. descendants of Moab

  416. who are Lot's descendants.

  417. So if you remember

  418. in Genesis,

  419. you had Abraham

  420. and Lot.

  421. Lot was Abraham's nephew

  422. and his daughters

  423. had children

  424. and they became

  425. the Moabites.

  426. And so we have

  427. the two sons.

  428. So in verse 2,

  429. it says the man's name

  430. is Imelech,

  431. meaning that God is king

  432. and his wife's name

  433. was Naomi,

  434. which meant

  435. was sweet.

  436. So there we have

  437. Imelech

  438. and his sweet Naomi.

  439. And then we have

  440. Malon and Kilion.

  441. And these two names

  442. are sort of

  443. in the text,

  444. they kind of mean

  445. weakling

  446. or sickly.

  447. So Malon

  448. has the idea

  449. of being weak

  450. and Silon sickly.

  451. So maybe

  452. he wasn't being

  453. selfish at all.

  454. Maybe Imelech

  455. was really thinking,

  456. you know,

  457. mighty sons,

  458. they're not going

  459. to survive the famine.

  460. So maybe it was just

  461. a, you know,

  462. let's do the logic.

  463. Let's go somewhere

  464. where there's food.

  465. Let's go and

  466. help our children.

  467. Maybe it was

  468. motivated

  469. by his own care

  470. and his love

  471. to see his two boys

  472. grow up

  473. and have lives.

  474. We're not sure,

  475. but

  476. true to their names,

  477. we find out

  478. that the family

  479. has a setback.

  480. And we have

  481. the setback

  482. one in verse three.

  483. Now,

  484. Elimelech,

  485. Naomi's husband,

  486. well,

  487. he died

  488. and she was

  489. left with her

  490. two sons,

  491. so all is not

  492. lost.

  493. Like every good

  494. drama,

  495. we start off

  496. with tragedy.

  497. And then this one

  498. is no different.

  499. We have tragedy.

  500. They go to Moab

  501. and then

  502. the husbands

  503. died.

  504. Now,

  505. that may

  506. not necessarily

  507. be that significant

  508. to us.

  509. It's also,

  510. you know,

  511. someone's husband's

  512. died,

  513. it's terrible

  514. and now

  515. you grieve

  516. the loss

  517. of someone.

  518. But

  519. in the ancient

  520. world,

  521. when you lost

  522. your husband,

  523. you lost

  524. your livelihood,

  525. you lost

  526. your income,

  527. you lost

  528. your means

  529. of protection,

  530. you lost

  531. your support.

  532. And so

  533. the family

  534. has a setback.

  535. You see,

  536. they had planned

  537. to escape

  538. the famine

  539. by going

  540. to Moab.

  541. But actually,

  542. by going

  543. to Moab,

  544. you can't

  545. really escape

  546. life and

  547. circumstance.

  548. There's a

  549. lesson there.

  550. Running

  551. to Moab

  552. is never

  553. a good idea.

  554. Doing

  555. things in

  556. our own

  557. way

  558. is never

  559. a good

  560. idea.

  561. They should

  562. have stayed

  563. in the

  564. promised land.

  565. It's the land

  566. that God

  567. had said

  568. that he would

  569. bless his

  570. people.

  571. And if

  572. God was

  573. judging them

  574. for the famine,

  575. well,

  576. surely the right

  577. thing would

  578. have been

  579. to be

  580. there to

  581. promote

  582. godliness

  583. and for

  584. them to

  585. repent.

  586. But no,

  587. they decided

  588. not.

  589. But in

  590. verse 4,

  591. we find out

  592. that it's

  593. not complete

  594. disaster.

  595. So the

  596. children,

  597. by this

  598. time,

  599. we assume

  600. that they

  601. have grown

  602. up to

  603. be of

  604. age so

  605. that they

  606. can marry

  607. and work.

  608. So they're

  609. not children

  610. anymore.

  611. And it

  612. says in

  613. verse 4

  614. that they

  615. married

  616. Moabite

  617. women,

  618. which they

  619. were forbidden

  620. under the

  621. law not to

  622. do.

  623. One named

  624. Orpha and

  625. the other

  626. was named

  627. Ruth.

  628. So they

  629. had lots

  630. of things

  631. going on

  632. here.

  633. After they

  634. had lived

  635. there about

  636. 10 years,

  637. disaster

  638. strikes again.

  639. So they

  640. go from

  641. the general

  642. scheme of

  643. things in all

  644. families.

  645. they went

  646. from crisis

  647. to some

  648. restoration

  649. to crisis.

  650. Isn't that

  651. how we all

  652. live sometimes?

  653. We're just

  654. waiting for

  655. the next

  656. wrong thing

  657. to happen.

  658. And then

  659. there's good

  660. things.

  661. Life is

  662. full of

  663. struggles.

  664. And so

  665. Elmac's

  666. family is

  667. no different.

  668. The sons

  669. have married

  670. but there's

  671. no children.

  672. It's

  673. interesting.

  674. The names

  675. in the

  676. book of

  677. Ruth are

  678. I think

  679. quite

  680. significant.

  681. And Ruth,

  682. this lady

  683. Ruth who

  684. we're going

  685. to learn

  686. an awful

  687. lot about,

  688. her name

  689. means friend,

  690. companion.

  691. And we're

  692. going to

  693. learn throughout

  694. the coming

  695. weeks how

  696. true that

  697. she lived

  698. up to her

  699. name,

  700. how much

  701. of a

  702. friend and

  703. a companion

  704. that she

  705. becomes

  706. to Naomi.

  707. And so

  708. she's gone

  709. in the

  710. space of

  711. four verses

  712. from a

  713. full life

  714. to one

  715. that is

  716. completely

  717. empty.

  718. That's

  719. harsh.

  720. And what's

  721. really good

  722. is that we

  723. don't really

  724. come out of

  725. that this

  726. morning.

  727. That's

  728. where we

  729. leave Ruth

  730. this morning

  731. and Naomi

  732. and Orpha.

  733. We leave

  734. them in

  735. their

  736. emptiness.

  737. happiness.

  738. It's a

  739. total loss.

  740. It's

  741. disaster.

  742. It is

  743. not a

  744. good picture.

  745. The three

  746. ladies have

  747. been left.

  748. They went

  749. from a

  750. family that

  751. was full

  752. and where

  753. they had,

  754. you know,

  755. it was a,

  756. if you like,

  757. a male-led

  758. family and

  759. now they're

  760. destitute.

  761. so in

  762. the space

  763. of ten

  764. years,

  765. because we're

  766. not quite

  767. sure in

  768. the text,

  769. it doesn't

  770. say that

  771. Emelech

  772. died and

  773. they got

  774. married.

  775. We're not

  776. sure if

  777. that all

  778. happened

  779. around the

  780. same time

  781. or whether

  782. there was

  783. a space

  784. between it

  785. and it's

  786. ten years

  787. later that

  788. the sons

  789. die.

  790. But there's

  791. no heirs,

  792. there's no

  793. children,

  794. there's no

  795. sons,

  796. there's no

  797. daughters.

  798. The men

  799. have gone.

  800. And so the

  801. significance of

  802. this is

  803. that food

  804. is now

  805. their secondary

  806. concern.

  807. They are,

  808. if you like,

  809. all lost at

  810. sea with

  811. no direction,

  812. no seal,

  813. no rudder,

  814. because now

  815. they have no

  816. providers for

  817. food.

  818. And on

  819. top of

  820. that,

  821. poor Naomi

  822. is in a

  823. foreign country.

  824. And if

  825. you're feeling

  826. sorry for

  827. Naomi,

  828. I hope that

  829. you are.

  830. That's the

  831. kind of picture

  832. that the

  833. Bible is

  834. painting.

  835. This is

  836. devastation.

  837. I know you

  838. were wanting

  839. to come and

  840. hear a nice

  841. encouragement

  842. sermon this

  843. morning,

  844. and not a

  845. story about

  846. how bad

  847. life was in

  848. the period of

  849. the judges,

  850. but for

  851. Naomi and

  852. her family,

  853. that is the

  854. reality of

  855. the book of

  856. Ruth.

  857. She is

  858. destitute.

  859. But isn't

  860. that like all

  861. of us?

  862. Without

  863. Christ,

  864. without God,

  865. no matter how

  866. much we have

  867. or how little

  868. we have or

  869. where we live,

  870. really what we

  871. have isn't

  872. really worth

  873. very much.

  874. Nine Inch

  875. Nails,

  876. I'm sure you're

  877. all quite

  878. familiar with

  879. that band.

  880. You might be

  881. more familiar

  882. with Johnny Cash.

  883. He took one

  884. of their songs

  885. and sort of

  886. made it more

  887. popular to

  888. people that

  889. didn't like

  890. Nine Inch

  891. Nails.

  892. And this is how

  893. it goes.

  894. It says,

  895. I hurt myself

  896. today to

  897. see if I

  898. still feel.

  899. I focus on

  900. the pain,

  901. the only

  902. thing that's

  903. real.

  904. The needle

  905. tears a

  906. hole,

  907. the old

  908. familiar

  909. sting.

  910. Try to

  911. kill it

  912. all away,

  913. but I

  914. remember

  915. everything.

  916. What have

  917. I become?

  918. My

  919. sweetest

  920. friend,

  921. everyone I

  922. know,

  923. goes away

  924. in the

  925. end.

  926. And you

  927. can have

  928. it all,

  929. my empire

  930. of dirt.

  931. I will

  932. let you

  933. down,

  934. because I

  935. will make

  936. you hurt.

  937. I wear

  938. this crown

  939. of thorns

  940. upon my

  941. liar's

  942. chair,

  943. full of

  944. broken

  945. thoughts

  946. that I

  947. cannot

  948. repair.

  949. Beneath

  950. the stains

  951. of time,

  952. the feelings

  953. of despair,

  954. you are

  955. someone else.

  956. I am

  957. still right

  958. there.

  959. What have

  960. I become,

  961. my sweetest

  962. friend?

  963. Everyone I

  964. know,

  965. goes away

  966. in the

  967. end.

  968. And you

  969. can have

  970. it all,

  971. my empire

  972. of dirt.

  973. I will

  974. let you

  975. down.

  976. I will

  977. make you

  978. hurt.

  979. If I

  980. could start

  981. again a

  982. million miles

  983. away,

  984. I will

  985. keep myself,

  986. I would

  987. find,

  988. away.

  989. I think

  990. that Naomi

  991. might be

  992. feeling just

  993. a little

  994. like that.

  995. She might

  996. be feeling

  997. that,

  998. what have

  999. I become?

  1000. What about

  1001. my hopes?

  1002. What about

  1003. my dreams?

  1004. What about

  1005. the expectations?

  1006. I'm here,

  1007. I'm alone.

  1008. Even the

  1009. people that

  1010. I'm with

  1011. don't need

  1012. to be with

  1013. me.

  1014. I'm left

  1015. with my

  1016. daughters-in-law.

  1017. And so

  1018. where do

  1019. we go?

  1020. And we

  1021. look at

  1022. verse

  1023. six.

  1024. When

  1025. Naomi

  1026. heard in

  1027. Moab,

  1028. good news

  1029. travels

  1030. all the

  1031. way to

  1032. Moab,

  1033. that the

  1034. Lord had

  1035. come to

  1036. the aid

  1037. of his

  1038. people

  1039. by

  1040. providing

  1041. food for

  1042. them.

  1043. So she

  1044. and her

  1045. daughters-in-law

  1046. prepared to

  1047. return home

  1048. from there.

  1049. Good news

  1050. reached Naomi.

  1051. It wasn't

  1052. completely

  1053. good news.

  1054. Nobody

  1055. likes to

  1056. go back

  1057. to where

  1058. they left

  1059. in failure.

  1060. And so

  1061. that's where

  1062. we're going

  1063. to leave

  1064. Naomi.

  1065. She's going

  1066. to go on

  1067. that journey.

  1068. We're going

  1069. to go on

  1070. that journey

  1071. with her.

  1072. But we're

  1073. going to

  1074. stop and

  1075. we're going

  1076. to think

  1077. about that

  1078. the Lord

  1079. had come.

  1080. When I

  1081. was a

  1082. young boy

  1083. of,

  1084. I think I

  1085. was about

  1086. 12 years

  1087. old,

  1088. and I

  1089. went to

  1090. a camp

  1091. and someone

  1092. actually told

  1093. me the

  1094. word of

  1095. the Lord.

  1096. I was a

  1097. rascal.

  1098. I,

  1099. yeah,

  1100. I was that

  1101. kid,

  1102. you know,

  1103. the one

  1104. that,

  1105. yes,

  1106. their parents

  1107. pulled their

  1108. hair out

  1109. over,

  1110. you know.

  1111. But I

  1112. went away

  1113. to a

  1114. camp and

  1115. someone told

  1116. me about

  1117. Christ.

  1118. Someone said

  1119. that you can

  1120. live a

  1121. different life.

  1122. Someone said

  1123. to me that

  1124. you can

  1125. change,

  1126. and the

  1127. way to

  1128. change is

  1129. that you

  1130. believe the

  1131. gospel,

  1132. and that you

  1133. repent of

  1134. your sin,

  1135. and that you

  1136. follow after

  1137. Christ all

  1138. of your

  1139. days.

  1140. And the

  1141. reason that

  1142. you can do

  1143. this is

  1144. because Christ

  1145. died for

  1146. your sins,

  1147. and he

  1148. died to

  1149. make you

  1150. a different

  1151. person.

  1152. He died

  1153. to make

  1154. you from

  1155. a rascal

  1156. into a

  1157. child of

  1158. God.

  1159. And I

  1160. thought,

  1161. that's

  1162. awesome.

  1163. And so I

  1164. believed in

  1165. Christ,

  1166. and I

  1167. followed him

  1168. ever since,

  1169. and it's

  1170. been

  1171. an interesting

  1172. journey as I

  1173. have walked

  1174. with God,

  1175. but I've

  1176. never once

  1177. thought that

  1178. was a bad

  1179. idea.

  1180. I heard the

  1181. word of the

  1182. Lord,

  1183. and I heard

  1184. that there

  1185. was food,

  1186. and I

  1187. came,

  1188. and I

  1189. found bread.

  1190. And so I

  1191. would encourage

  1192. you this

  1193. morning that

  1194. if you don't

  1195. know Christ,

  1196. and this is

  1197. the first time

  1198. that you've

  1199. been in

  1200. church,

  1201. Christ is

  1202. there for

  1203. you,

  1204. just like

  1205. God was

  1206. there for

  1207. Naomi.

  1208. You see,

  1209. we leave this

  1210. morning with

  1211. a word of

  1212. grace.

  1213. Yahweh had

  1214. provided food.

  1215. The news

  1216. prompts Naomi

  1217. to say,

  1218. I know what

  1219. rascals they

  1220. were back

  1221. home.

  1222. Maybe,

  1223. maybe if I

  1224. go home,

  1225. at least I

  1226. can find

  1227. bread.

  1228. And then,

  1229. whose idea

  1230. was it anyway

  1231. to come

  1232. here?

  1233. My husband,

  1234. Emilech,

  1235. he brought

  1236. me here.

  1237. I didn't

  1238. really want

  1239. to come.

  1240. My husband's

  1241. dead.

  1242. My children

  1243. are dead.

  1244. I have

  1245. some friends

  1246. back in

  1247. Israel.

  1248. I have

  1249. some friends

  1250. in Bethlehem.

  1251. I have

  1252. some family

  1253. there.

  1254. Maybe

  1255. they'll take

  1256. me back.

  1257. Maybe

  1258. they'll accept

  1259. me back

  1260. into their

  1261. community.

  1262. Maybe.

  1263. But as

  1264. Naomi

  1265. would discover

  1266. God has

  1267. better plans

  1268. than just

  1269. maybe.

  1270. God has

  1271. better plans

  1272. for you.

  1273. God has

  1274. better plans

  1275. for me

  1276. than just

  1277. maybe.

  1278. See,

  1279. it reminds

  1280. me a little

  1281. of the

  1282. story Jesus

  1283. told about

  1284. the prodigal

  1285. son.

  1286. It's in

  1287. Luke chapter

    Luke 15:11–32

  1288. 15,

  1289. verses 11

  1290. to 32.

  1291. We won't

  1292. go there,

  1293. but we have

  1294. a story of

  1295. a son who

  1296. says,

  1297. do you know

  1298. what,

  1299. Father,

  1300. I wish you

  1301. were dead.

  1302. I want to

  1303. go and live

  1304. life on my

  1305. terms,

  1306. and I

  1307. want to

  1308. go and

  1309. live life

  1310. my way.

  1311. In fact,

  1312. I wish you

  1313. were dead,

  1314. so let's

  1315. imagine that

  1316. you are

  1317. dead and

  1318. give me

  1319. all of the

  1320. money that

  1321. you would

  1322. have given

  1323. to me

  1324. if you

  1325. had died.

  1326. I want

  1327. my

  1328. inheritance

  1329. now.

  1330. And he

  1331. goes to

  1332. the far

  1333. off land,

  1334. he goes

  1335. to Moab,

  1336. you could

  1337. say,

  1338. and he

  1339. squanders

  1340. his life.

  1341. And he

  1342. loses all

  1343. of his

  1344. money,

  1345. he loses

  1346. all of his

  1347. family's

  1348. inheritance,

  1349. and he

  1350. ends up

  1351. feeding

  1352. pigs,

  1353. and having

  1354. nothing.

  1355. He is

  1356. gone as

  1357. low as

  1358. he can

  1359. go.

  1360. But in

  1361. the midst

  1362. of that,

  1363. he remembers.

  1364. He remembers

  1365. that in his

  1366. father's house,

  1367. even the

  1368. servants have

  1369. enough to

  1370. eat.

  1371. And he

  1372. says to

  1373. himself,

  1374. what am I

  1375. doing here?

  1376. My father

  1377. loves me.

  1378. Maybe he'll

  1379. accept me

  1380. back,

  1381. even just

  1382. as a

  1383. servant.

  1384. And at

  1385. least I'll

  1386. have food,

  1387. because here

  1388. I have

  1389. nothing and

  1390. I'm starving.

  1391. And he

  1392. returns to

  1393. his father.

  1394. But when

  1395. he returns

  1396. to his

  1397. father,

  1398. he finds

  1399. out that

  1400. his father

  1401. has better

  1402. plans than

  1403. just food

  1404. and service.

  1405. He finds

  1406. that his

  1407. father embraces

  1408. him back

  1409. into his

  1410. own heart.

  1411. And like

  1412. the prodigal,

  1413. and like

  1414. Naomi,

  1415. we need

  1416. to hear

  1417. the word

  1418. of the

  1419. Lord.

  1420. We need

  1421. to know

  1422. that

  1423. Father God

  1424. is waiting

  1425. for us.

  1426. He's there.

  1427. He's wanting

  1428. to welcome

  1429. us back,

  1430. just like

  1431. the prodigal.

  1432. And he

  1433. proved it,

  1434. in that he

  1435. sent his

  1436. son,

  1437. the Lord

  1438. Jesus Christ,

  1439. to die

  1440. for us.

  1441. God so

  1442. loved the

  1443. world that

  1444. he sent

  1445. his one

  1446. and only

  1447. son.

  1448. And that's

  1449. the good

  1450. news.

  1451. That's why

  1452. we're all

  1453. here this

  1454. morning.

  1455. If you

  1456. know and

  1457. love the

  1458. Lord Jesus

  1459. Christ,

  1460. we're going

  1461. to celebrate

  1462. his sacrifice

  1463. through the

  1464. breaking of

  1465. bread.

  1466. We heard

  1467. the good

  1468. report,

  1469. the good

  1470. news,

  1471. and we

  1472. returned home.

  1473. And so I

  1474. would encourage

  1475. you to

  1476. return home

  1477. this morning.

  1478. Sometimes it

  1479. takes extreme

  1480. circumstances.

  1481. Sometimes it's

  1482. at our point

  1483. of need.

  1484. It's like the

  1485. prodigal son.

  1486. It's when we're

  1487. at our lowest.

  1488. It's when we're

  1489. feeding pigs

  1490. and the pigs

  1491. die.

  1492. Maybe it's

  1493. like Naomi.

  1494. It's loss.

  1495. It's famine.

  1496. It's

  1497. bereavement.

  1498. And it

  1499. brings us to

  1500. the point

  1501. that we

  1502. realize,

  1503. you know

  1504. what?

  1505. Life's not

  1506. too good

  1507. living it

  1508. my way.

  1509. Doing what's

  1510. right in our

  1511. own eyes is

  1512. not really

  1513. where it's

  1514. at.

  1515. I need

  1516. something

  1517. else.

  1518. Let us

  1519. pray.

  1520. O Lord,

  1521. whose power

  1522. is infinite

  1523. and wisdom

  1524. infallible,

  1525. order things

  1526. that they

  1527. may neither

  1528. hinder nor

  1529. discourage

  1530. me, nor

  1531. prove obstacles

  1532. to the

  1533. progress of

  1534. thy cause.

  1535. Stand

  1536. between me

  1537. and all

  1538. strife,

  1539. that no

  1540. evil befall

  1541. and no

  1542. sin corrupts

  1543. my gifts,

  1544. zeal, or

  1545. attainments.

  1546. May I

  1547. follow duty

  1548. and not

  1549. any foolish

  1550. device of

  1551. my own.

  1552. Permit me

  1553. not to

  1554. labor at

  1555. work, which

  1556. thou wilt not

  1557. bless, that

  1558. I may serve

  1559. thee without

  1560. disgrace or

  1561. debt.

  1562. Father God,

  1563. would you

  1564. help us

  1565. realize

  1566. that you

  1567. being king

  1568. is the

  1569. most important

  1570. thing that

  1571. we can ever

  1572. know.

  1573. Lord, that

  1574. we would

  1575. not want to

  1576. live lives

  1577. as we see

  1578. fit.

  1579. Lord, that

  1580. we would

  1581. seek to

  1582. desire to

  1583. know you,

  1584. to know

  1585. your will,

  1586. to know

  1587. your ways.

  1588. And Lord, to

  1589. follow you in

  1590. love and to

  1591. share that

  1592. love and

  1593. that knowledge

  1594. of you with

  1595. everyone.

  1596. Because

  1597. knowing that

  1598. there is

  1599. bread in the

  1600. house of

  1601. bread,

  1602. knowing that

  1603. you are the

  1604. bread of

  1605. life.

  1606. Knowing that

  1607. is the

  1608. greatest treasure

  1609. for anyone.

  1610. And Lord,

  1611. would you

  1612. impact us

  1613. again just

  1614. with the

  1615. glory of

  1616. Christ and

  1617. what you

  1618. have provided

  1619. for us in

  1620. your sacrifice.

  1621. In Jesus'

  1622. name,

  1623. Amen.

  1624. Amen.

  1625. Amen.

  1626. Amen.

  1627. Amen.

  1628. Anne.

  1629. Amen.

  1630. Amen.

  1631. Amen.

  1632. Amen.

  1633. Amen.

  1634. Amen.

  1635. Amen.

  1636. Amen.

  1637. Amen.

  1638. Amen.

  1639. Amen.

  1640. Amen.

  1641. Amen.

  1642. Amen.

  1643. Maim.

  1644. Amen.

  1645. Amen.
