  1. inside a man of of standing from the clan of Elimelech whose name was Boaz and Ruth the

  2. Moabite said to Naomi let me go to the fields and pick up the leftover grain behind anyone in whose

  3. eyes I find favor. Naomi said to her go ahead my daughter so she went out entered a field and began

  4. to glean behind the harvesters as it turned out she was working in a field belonging to Boaz who

  5. was from the clan of Elimelech. Just then Boaz arrived from Bethlehem and greeted the harvesters

  6. the Lord be with you the Lord bless you they answered. Boaz asked the overseer of his harvesters

  7. who does that young woman belong to? The overseer replied she is the Moabite who came back from

  8. Moab with Naomi. She said please let me glean and gather among the sheaves behind the harvesters.

  9. She came into the field and has remained here from morning till now except for a short rest in the

  10. shelter. So Boaz said to Ruth my daughter listen to me don't go and glean in another field and don't go

  11. away from here. Stay here with the women who work for me. Watch the field where the men are harvesting

  12. and follow along after the women. I have told the men not to lay a hand on you and whenever you are thirsty

  13. go and get a drink from the water jars the men have filled. At this she bowed down with her face to the

  14. ground. She asked him why have you why have I found such favor in your eyes that you notice me a foreigner?

  15. Boaz replied I've been told all about what you have done for your mother-in-law since the death of your

  16. husband. How you left your father and mother and your homeland and came to live with the people you did

  17. not know before. May the Lord repay you for what you have done. May you be richly rewarded by the Lord

  18. the God of Israel under whose wings you have come to take refuge. May I continue to find favor in your

  19. eyes my Lord she said you have put me at ease by speaking kindly to your servant though I do not have

  20. the standing of one of your servants. At mealtime Boaz said to her come over here have some bread and

  21. dip it in the wine vinegar. When she sat down with the harvesters he offered her some roasted grain.

  22. She ate all she wanted and had some left over. As she got up to glean Boaz gave orders to his men

  23. let her gather among the sheaves and don't reprimand her. Even pull out some stalks for her

  24. from the bundles and leave them for her to pick up and don't rebuke her. Gary thank you.

  25. Let's pray before we open God's word together. Father God we thank you for your word to us this

  26. morning. We thank you for this book of Ruth that you have left for us to to open up and that inside

  27. its pages Lord that we would learn from you and we would learn about you. Help us as we we look this

  28. morning to be changed by your word in Jesus name. Amen.

  29. So if you've been here the last few weeks we've been we've been on a journey. We've been on a journey

  30. with Ruth. We've been on a journey with Naomi. Last week we left them at the side of the road. They'd just

  31. come from Bethlehem and or they'd just come to Bethlehem from Moab and we remember that Moab is

  32. is a place that isn't isn't liked by God. It is seen as one of God's enemies and so the idea of going

  33. to Moab is bad. The idea of coming back from Moab is extremely shameful. Coming back from Moab as a

  34. widow and coming back from Moab without your children and then bringing you know Johnny Foreigner

  35. along with you. This isn't going to to look good in Bethlehem. It is it's scandalous and so what are

  36. we going to find? We find Ruth actually. We looked at in home groups if you have the time I do encourage

  37. you to come along to home groups. They're a great place. They're they're a lot more relaxed. There's

  38. less people. There's more tea and coffee and we can get together and we can you know we can chat about

  39. life. Chat about things and also chat about God's word and that's an aside. It was free. Nobody asked

  40. me to say that but yeah home groups are good and and so Ruth is the one who's encouraging Naomi. She's

  41. saying Naomi I'm coming with you. I want your God to be my God. She's saying that's it. I'm all in. I'm

  42. with you and they arrive at harvest time. She's the one that seems to be encouraging Naomi at this point.

  43. If she grew up when I did in in the 80s she probably would have flicked on to her cd player because we

  44. didn't have iPods in those days and she might have sang this song. She might have said you know when

  45. your day is long and the night the night is yours alone and when you're sure you've had enough of

  46. this life well you know just hang on. Don't just don't let yourself go because everybody cries

  47. and everybody hurts sometime and the chorus of that song goes on and it's it's an encouragement

  48. to hold on. To hold on. You see we live in a broken world that can change in a moment.

  49. In the blink of an eye somebody goes shopping in Douglas and comes back and their car's on fire.

  50. That was only a couple of weeks ago. Tragedy can strike at any moment at any place and none of us

  51. have any control over what's going to happen. And whether it's a fire in a shopping mall or whether

  52. it's the death of a loved one. We live in a broken and a fallen world and so Ruth is there and they're

  53. alone. They're back in Bethlehem. And Ruth's saying hold on. There's hope.

  54. But is Ruth correct? Is you know REM are they correct? What is their hope to hold on to you or hold on for?

  55. Can we actually find hope in this broken world?

  56. And if so where can we get it from? Who provides the hope for us?

  57. And so we look again at the text in verse 3. Verse 1 to 3. Let's look at that together.

  58. And so it tells us in verse 1 that Naomi has a relative. We have a new character comes into the story.

  59. He's announced as this man Boaz. He's a man of standing. He's strong. If you're interested,

  60. I was alerted to the fact that Downton the movie is out. So whoever the character is in Downton,

  61. you know the strong, handsome, silent hero. This is Boaz here in this story. He's the Mr.

  62. Darcy of the Pride and Prejudice. This is Boaz. He's the strong,

  63. man of upright character with influence. And we're introduced to him. And not only that,

  64. we're told a few more details that he's from Elimelech's clan. So he is related. And we know

  65. his name. We know he's Boaz. And that's it. But it can do and raise a few questions for us.

  66. Who is Boaz? What will happen? Ruth has pledged her life to God and to follow Naomi.

  67. But what about God's people? Who will she meet? Who will she find? Are they going to like her?

  68. Will they accept her? She's given her life to the God of Israel and to Naomi, but she has no hope

  69. that as a foreigner that she's going to be accepted by this new people. What kind of people does she

  70. expect to find? And will the God that she's put her trust in, will he live up to his reputation?

  71. And will his people reflect his character? So we're going to find that out in this chapter. It's

  72. exciting. I think it's exciting. And poor Ruth, she doesn't ever lose this tag of being the Moabite,

  73. does she? Verse 2 says,

  74. And Ruth the Moabite said to Naomi, Let me go into the fields and pick leftover grain behind anyone in

  75. whose eyes I find favor. And Naomi said to her, Go ahead, my daughter. And so she went out, she entered

  76. a field, and she began to glean behind the harvesters. And as it turned out, she was working in a field

  77. belonging to Boaz, who was from the clan of Elimelech. And so the background to these three

  78. verses, I believe, is that Ruth has a hope in God's word. If you want to take a note down, if you want to

  79. go to Deuteronomy 24, and you can read through verses 17 to 22, we won't go through. But there is

  80. the law about gleaning. And so what is the law about gleaning? Well, in short, it's this. If you have a

  81. harvest field, don't pick every grain of corn. Leave some. And who are we going to leave it for? Well, we're

  82. going to leave it for the widows. We're going to leave it for the foreigners. And we're going to leave it

  83. for the poor and the orphan to come along and so that they can pick it after you. And one of the

  84. memories of this is because you were foreigners, you were slaves in Egypt, and you were mistreated,

  85. but you're not going to, this nation, this godly nation isn't going to be like Egypt. And so God's

  86. making provision for the poor and for the widow in this law of gleaning. And that's what's behind

  87. these three verses here. In fact, that's what's behind this chapter. This command of God and the law

  88. in Deuteronomy chapter 24. And so I'm assuming that in some cases, Naomi has told Ruth this,

    Deuteronomy 24 chapter mention

  89. and she's worked it out, that actually the word of God says that I should be able to go to a field,

  90. I should be able to turn up, and I should be allowed to gather corn so that we can survive.

  91. And so off Naomi goes. So she has these three ideas. She says that she's going to be able to get

  92. provision. She's going to be able to hopefully find favor and grace in the people of Israel. In fact,

  93. she's looking for an individual that's going to be gracious and give her favor, and that she's going

  94. to find acceptance. And she expects those things from the people of God. And so my question to us

  95. this morning is, what do people expect of us? You know, when they hear about the Bible, they hear

  96. about Christians, and they hear about Christians who are meant to love one another and love their

  97. neighbors, when they meet us. Do we live up to the billing? Do we reflect the love and the character

  98. of God that we know? It's a challenge to us. It's a big challenge. But this is what Ruth expects to find.

  99. And so we have to say, does she get it? Does she find that? Because we have to remember that the context

  100. of the whole book of Ruth is taking place in the time of Judges, when everybody was doing their own

  101. thing. Is she going to find people that actually are living God's standard? They're living God's way at a time

  102. when most people are doing their own thing. And just there in verse 2, she wants to go to the fields.

  103. She wants to pick up leftover grain. And in verse 3, it tells us she goes out, and as it turned out,

  104. she ends up in Boaz's field. Isn't that good? We've heard about this man, Boaz. He's of normal

  105. character. So what's he going to do? How's he going to influence this story? Is he going to help

  106. Naomi and Ruth? We don't know. But Jesus commands that we would love one another. He commands that

  107. we would love our neighbor as herself. And this is what she expects in the law. This is what she expects

  108. from this new community that she's given up everything to be a part of.

  109. What's she going to discover?

  110. So let's look at verse 4. This is where it gets exciting. And if you're into your romantic dramas,

  111. it starts to hot up a bit.

  112. Just then, Boaz arrived from Bethlehem, and he greeted his harvesters, and he says,

  113. The Lord be with you. And the Lord bless you, they answered.

  114. Boaz is a good boss. He comes, and we know he's a godly man, and he greets them with a greeting.

  115. He's saying, God be with you. It's a nice greeting. It's a nice way to introduce Boaz to us.

  116. And then Boaz, he asked his harvesters.

  117. He's seen something that's different in his field.

  118. There's all of his normal workers, and there's the ladies and the men,

  119. and he spots something different, and he calls over his charged hand,

  120. and he says,

  121. Who's that girl?

  122. Who's she?

  123. She catches his eye.

  124. But what he actually says is,

  125. Who does that woman belong to?

  126. Who owns that woman?

  127. Who is that woman's protector?

  128. Who is she?

  129. Whose daughter is she?

  130. Who is her husband?

  131. Who's her protector?

  132. Where does she come from?

  133. And we get the answer, and the overseer, he replies,

  134. Well, she's the Moabite that came back from Moab.

  135. As if Moabite didn't tell him exactly where she came from.

  136. He has to emphasize the fact that she's not from around here.

  137. And she said,

  138. Please let me glean and gather among the sheaves,

  139. behind the harvesters,

  140. and she came into the field,

  141. and has remained here from morning till now,

  142. except for a short rest in the shelter.

  143. And really what she's saying is,

  144. Well, that's the foreigner that came back from Moab.

  145. She's the odd one out among here,

  146. but she's been here all morning,

  147. and she's a really hard worker.

  148. She hasn't really taken a lot of time to rest.

  149. And so he is, in one sense,

  150. he's impressed by her dedication,

  151. but he's still not sure about whether or not

  152. he should accept her or not.

  153. He still sees her as an outsider.

  154. And so this is then magical.

  155. This is a big old moment.

  156. What is Boaz going to do?

  157. Is he going to tell her to,

  158. you know,

  159. What are you doing?

  160. Get away?

  161. You're a foreigner.

  162. You're a Moabite.

  163. I don't want you in my field.

  164. Clear off.

  165. Is that his response?

  166. And in verse 8,

  167. it says,

  168. So Boaz said to Ruth,

  169. My daughter, listen to me.

  170. Don't go and glean in another field.

  171. And don't go away from here.

  172. Stay here with the women who work for me.

  173. Watch the field where the men are harvesting

  174. and follow along after the women.

  175. And I have told the men,

  176. Do not lay a hand on you.

  177. And whenever you are thirsty,

  178. go and get a drink from the water jars

  179. that the men have filled.

  180. See, she had heard God's word

  181. and it told her about a God of refuge.

  182. And so she's receiving all of these things

  183. all at once throughout this chapter

  184. as we read through it,

  185. as you look through it,

  186. as you go home.

  187. She's given protection.

  188. She's given kindness.

  189. And she's given grace.

  190. Boaz doesn't throw her out.

  191. Boaz embraces her.

  192. In fact, Boaz says to all the young men,

  193. because she's vulnerable

  194. and she's not belonging to anybody,

  195. he says,

  196. Hands off.

  197. She's under my protection.

  198. Anybody touches Ruth

  199. answers to me.

  200. He's laying down the law.

  201. He's saying no.

  202. And then he's saying to Ruth,

  203. he's saying,

  204. You know,

  205. if you're thirsty,

  206. you can go and get water.

  207. He's not treating her like

  208. someone who's poor.

  209. He's bringing her in

  210. and treating her,

  211. I suppose,

  212. you could say,

  213. like a hired worker.

  214. Only there's no benefit to Boaz

  215. because anything she gets,

  216. she takes away.

  217. And so he's treating her

  218. with real kindness,

  219. real grace,

  220. and real protection.

  221. And these are the things

  222. that Ruth thought she would find

  223. in the people of God.

  224. And so this is Ruth's response.

  225. She can't believe it.

  226. She thought,

  227. you know,

  228. if we get a few stalks of corn

  229. and make a wee bit of flour

  230. and get home

  231. and me and Naomi can eat,

  232. well,

  233. surely that would be great kindness.

  234. But Boaz goes way beyond

  235. her expectations

  236. and at this,

  237. it says in verse 10

  238. that she bowed her face

  239. to the ground

  240. and she asked him,

  241. Why have I found

  242. such favor in your eyes

  243. that you notice me,

  244. a foreigner?

  245. It's even how

  246. Ruth sees herself.

  247. Ruth sees herself

  248. as the outcast,

  249. as someone who's

  250. outside the community.

  251. She's doing this

  252. because she has a belief,

  253. but she still feels

  254. like an outsider.

  255. And this is wonderful.

  256. These words,

  257. verse 11,

  258. Boaz replied,

  259. I've been told

  260. all about

  261. what you have done

  262. for your mother-in-law.

  263. Obviously,

  264. gossip worked quite well

  265. 3,000 years ago,

  266. just as it does today.

  267. Since the death

  268. of your husband,

  269. how you left your father

  270. and mother

  271. and your homeland

  272. and you came to live

  273. with a people

  274. that you did not know before.

  275. Boaz has been told,

  276. we don't know how he knows,

  277. we're assuming it's

  278. Naomi has leaked out

  279. the information,

  280. but he knows about her

  281. commitment,

  282. not only to Naomi,

  283. not only to coming

  284. to the land of Israel

  285. and to Bethlehem,

  286. but her commitment

  287. to the God of Israel.

  288. And he understands

  289. exactly what it is

  290. that she's given up.

  291. And we know that

  292. by the introduction

  293. of those words

  294. that you have left

  295. your father and mother.

  296. You had protection,

  297. you had security,

  298. you had somewhere

  299. to belong

  300. and you have come

  301. to somewhere

  302. that you don't belong.

  303. And not only that,

  304. he actually gets

  305. why she's done it.

  306. He knows why

  307. and we learn that

  308. in verse 12.

  309. And this is the

  310. outstanding verse

  311. if you can have

  312. a better verse

  313. in a chapter,

  314. this is it.

  315. And these words

  316. are wonderful.

  317. He says,

  318. may the Lord repay you

  319. for what you have done.

  320. May you be richly

  321. rewarded by the Lord,

  322. the God of Israel

  323. under whose wings

  324. you have come

  325. to take refuge.

  326. Say, how smart is Boaz?

  327. Boaz realizes

  328. that yes,

  329. you're here

  330. with Naomi.

  331. Yes, you've left

  332. your father and your mother.

  333. But as we learned

  334. and we looked

  335. a little bit deeper

  336. on Home Group

  337. on Wednesday night,

  338. Ruth's commitment

  339. was to Yahweh.

  340. She was rejecting

  341. the gods

  342. of the Moabites

  343. and she wanted

  344. to know

  345. the God

  346. of the Israelites.

  347. She wanted to know

  348. who this God was

  349. and she wanted

  350. to align herself

  351. with him

  352. and she wanted

  353. to take refuge

  354. in the wings

  355. of God.

  356. and this is

  357. a wonderful picture.

  358. It's a picture

  359. of a bird

  360. protecting its chicks

  361. by surrounding

  362. the chicks

  363. with its wings

  364. protecting it

  365. from harm

  366. from the elements

  367. nestled cozy

  368. in all those feathers.

  369. It's a nice and cute

  370. little bird.

  371. Fragile

  372. little bird.

  373. And Boaz

  374. is saying

  375. God's going

  376. to bless you

  377. for what you've done.

  378. You've come here

  379. to take refuge

  380. and I believe

  381. that God's going

  382. to give you

  383. refuge.

  384. And so we find

  385. that all of the

  386. despair of the

  387. previous chapter

  388. is renewed

  389. and that there is

  390. hope.

  391. Hope

  392. in this refuge.

  393. And so the

  394. narrative continues

  395. and Ruth

  396. continues

  397. and she comes

  398. back and she

  399. says may I

  400. continue to find

  401. favor in your

  402. eyes my lord.

  403. She said you

  404. have put me at

  405. ease by speaking

  406. kindly to your

  407. servant though I

  408. do not have the

  409. standing of one

  410. of your servants.

  411. He's being so

  412. kind.

  413. He's going

  414. the extra mile.

  415. He is going

  416. beyond what's

  417. expected and Ruth

  418. is blown away.

  419. And it doesn't

  420. stop there.

  421. You go on

  422. verse 14.

  423. It's dinner time.

  424. What's going to

  425. happen?

  426. She's been working

  427. out all day.

  428. And so I think

  429. this is even more

  430. remarkable because

  431. I don't know this

  432. it's not in the

  433. text but I reckon

  434. all the workers

  435. on their own

  436. you know as they

  437. do in the boss

  438. he has his

  439. special little bit

  440. of food.

  441. And he comes

  442. to eat beside

  443. the boss

  444. is it you

  445. know the

  446. supervisor

  447. the manager

  448. no he calls

  449. over

  450. Ruth the

  451. Moabite

  452. the foreigner

  453. and he calls

  454. her over to

  455. his table

  456. in verse 14

  457. at mealtime

  458. Boaz said to

  459. her come over

  460. here have

  461. some bed

  462. and dip it

  463. in the wine

  464. vinegar.

  465. I remember

  466. many years

  467. ago when I

  468. was a little

  469. bit younger

  470. and I

  471. hadn't a clue

  472. you were going

  473. out to dinner

  474. parties and

  475. things like

  476. that and

  477. you experience

  478. new foods.

  479. I can remember

  480. the first time

  481. someone says

  482. well do you

  483. know you want

  484. some balsamic

  485. vinegar and

  486. bread.

  487. Like what?

  488. Bread?

  489. Balsamic

  490. vinegar?

  491. Uncouth you

  492. know.

  493. No idea.

  494. The idea

  495. that you can

  496. dip bread

  497. and put

  498. balsamic

  499. vinegar in it

  500. with a wee

  501. bit of oil

  502. and it's

  503. tasty.

  504. So that's

  505. what they're

  506. doing here.

  507. They're coming

  508. over in the

  509. text and

  510. they're having

  511. a little bit

  512. of wine

  513. vinegar and

  514. bread.

  515. And when

  516. she sat

  517. down with

  518. the harvesters

  519. he offered

  520. her some

  521. roasted grain

  522. and she

  523. had all that

  524. she wanted

  525. and she had

  526. some left

  527. over.

  528. We follow

  529. on there

  530. in verse

  531. 15 and

  532. as she

  533. got up

  534. to glean

  535. Boaz

  536. gave orders

  537. to his

  538. men.

  539. Do you

  540. know what?

  541. He almost

  542. takes the

  543. shackles off

  544. and he more

  545. or less

  546. says look

  547. just let

  548. her take

  549. the combine

  550. harvester

  551. there and

  552. just give

  553. her the

  554. whole field.

  555. He gives

  556. her open

  557. season.

  558. He basically

  559. says as

  560. much as

  561. that girl

  562. can carry

  563. let her

  564. have it.

  565. In fact

  566. you see

  567. when you're

  568. cutting

  569. down the

  570. big heads

  571. of grain

  572. just drop

  573. a couple

  574. and say

  575. look here

  576. there you

  577. go.

  578. And when

  579. she's doing

  580. it make

  581. sure you

  582. treat her

  583. kindly.

  584. Don't ever

  585. dare rebuke

  586. her.

  587. Let her

  588. do and let

  589. her have as

  590. much as she

  591. wants.

  592. He's gone

  593. from let her

  594. work and let

  595. her follow

  596. and he's

  597. realizing he

  598. wants to be

  599. God to

  600. this girl in

  601. the sense that

  602. he wants to

  603. fulfill what he

  604. believes about

  605. her.

  606. He wants to

  607. bless her

  608. because he

  609. really truly

  610. believes that

  611. God this is

  612. the thing that

  613. he should do

  614. because he

  615. wants to

  616. bless her

  617. because she's

  618. come back

  619. to find a

  620. God of

  621. refuge and

  622. he's trying to

  623. be that

  624. refuge for

  625. her.

  626. And so

  627. it goes on

  628. and she

  629. works all

  630. day and

  631. she works

  632. hard and

  633. she works

  634. all day and

  635. she gathers

  636. up a lot

  637. of stuff.

  638. And also

  639. she has

  640. enough lunch

  641. that she

  642. takes some

  643. home to

  644. Naomi.

  645. Naomi

  646. it says

  647. there in

  648. verse 17

  649. so Ruth

  650. gleaned in

  651. the field

  652. until evening

  653. and then

  654. she had

  655. threshed

  656. the barley

  657. she had

  658. gathered it

  659. and it

  660. amounted to

  661. about an

  662. ephah.

  663. And you're

  664. all saying

  665. what's an

  666. ephah?

  667. And I'm

  668. saying I

  669. don't know.

  670. But I'm

  671. told it's

  672. about 22

  673. liters.

  674. And so

  675. I reckon

  676. that not

  677. only that

  678. that's quite

  679. heavy so

  680. it tells me

  681. that this

  682. girl Ruth

  683. must have

  684. been a

  685. fit girl.

  686. She was

  687. a bit

  688. strong to

  689. carry 22

  690. liters around.

  691. 22 liters

  692. of milk

  693. I don't

  694. think I

  695. could carry

  696. that very

  697. far.

  698. But she's

  699. going back

  700. home.

  701. She's

  702. going to

  703. Naomi.

  704. Naomi's

  705. been away

  706. worrying all

  707. day.

  708. Where's

  709. Naomi got

  710. to?

  711. Where's

  712. Ruth got

  713. to?

  714. You know

  715. you think

  716. of the

  717. dangers.

  718. Boaz has

  719. had to tell

  720. his workers

  721. you know

  722. you've

  723. got to

  724. leave that

  725. girl alone.

  726. So the

  727. vulnerability

  728. of Ruth

  729. is very

  730. real and

  731. so Naomi

  732. is she

  733. worrying?

  734. Is she

  735. fretting?

  736. What's

  737. going to

  738. happen?

  739. What is

  740. she going

  741. to see?

  742. You could

  743. almost imagine

  744. her sitting

  745. waiting out

  746. looking over

  747. the horizon

  748. waiting for

  749. Ruth to

  750. return.

  751. And we

  752. see that

  753. in verse

  754. 18 she

  755. carried it

  756. back to

  757. town and

  758. her mother-in-law

  759. saw how much

  760. she had

  761. gathered.

  762. Ruth also

  763. brought out

  764. and gave

  765. her what

  766. she had

  767. left over

  768. and after

  769. she had

  770. eaten

  771. enough.

  772. And then

  773. here's the

  774. big question

  775. over dinner.

  776. And her

  777. mother-in-law

  778. asked her

  779. where did

  780. you clean

  781. today?

  782. Where'd

  783. you get

  784. everything?

  785. And it

  786. was a

  787. follow-up

  788. question.

  789. Where did

  790. you work?

  791. Blessed is

  792. the man who

  793. took notice

  794. of you.

  795. And so

  796. then Ruth

  797. told her

  798. mother-in-law

  799. all about

  800. the one

  801. whose place

  802. she had

  803. been

  804. working.

  805. And the

  806. name of

  807. the man

  808. who worked

  809. there today

  810. was Boaz.

  811. You can

  812. almost,

  813. you know,

  814. the anticipation

  815. of Naomi.

  816. 22 liters

  817. of flour

  818. and wheat

  819. and this

  820. roasted grain

  821. and,

  822. you know,

  823. who took

  824. notice of

  825. you?

  826. Who caught

  827. your eye

  828. today?

  829. Who was

  830. good to

  831. you?

  832. Where did

  833. you get

  834. such kindness

  835. and such

  836. grace?

  837. Naomi

  838. didn't

  839. expect it.

  840. Ruth

  841. didn't

  842. expect it.

  843. Do we

  844. expect it?

  845. What do

  846. you expect

  847. when you

  848. pray and

  849. you come

  850. to church

  851. and do

  852. you have

  853. high

  854. expectations

  855. of a

  856. loving God

  857. who wants

  858. to bless

  859. us?

  860. It's not

  861. a prosperity

  862. idea of

  863. blessing,

  864. but the

  865. heart that

  866. God wants

  867. us to

  868. come to

  869. him because

  870. he cares

  871. for us.

  872. And so

  873. Naomi's

  874. thrilled,

  875. obviously,

  876. and she

  877. says,

  878. the Lord

  879. bless him.

  880. Bless the

  881. man who

  882. took notice

  883. of you.

  884. Oops.

  885. And so

  886. we have

  887. this little

  888. dialogue

  889. between

  890. Naomi

  891. and Ruth.

  892. And then

  893. some little

  894. detail comes

  895. out.

  896. When she

  897. finds out

  898. that it's

  899. Boaz,

  900. she uses

  901. this term.

  902. She says,

  903. oh,

  904. that's

  905. great.

  906. He is

  907. one of

  908. our,

  909. the old

  910. word is

  911. kinsman

  912. redeemer.

  913. Or the

  914. NIV here

  915. says guardian

  916. redeemer.

  917. And everybody's

  918. going,

  919. what's that?

  920. Is that a

  921. Marvel movie?

  922. A guardian

  923. redeemer.

  924. And so

  925. again for

  926. that,

  927. I haven't

  928. got the

  929. reference,

  930. and we'll

  931. go into

  932. that a

  933. little bit

  934. more probably

  935. next week.

  936. But a

  937. guardian

  938. redeemer was

  939. this.

  940. If you were

  941. in trouble

  942. and you

  943. were a

  944. family member,

  945. the law

  946. said that

  947. your closest

  948. living relative

  949. had the

  950. right to

  951. come and

  952. buy you

  953. out of

  954. slavery or

  955. pay your

  956. debt and

  957. bring you

  958. back into

  959. your inheritance

  960. so that you

  961. wouldn't lose

  962. the inheritance

  963. that God

  964. had given

  965. the children

  966. of Israel.

  967. And so

  968. Naomi's

  969. saying,

  970. this is

  971. great,

  972. you've

  973. gone to

  974. Boaz,

  975. and you

  976. know what?

  977. He could

  978. possibly

  979. redeem us,

  980. he could

  981. get us

  982. out of

  983. the situation

  984. that we're

  985. in.

  986. He could

  987. help us.

  988. He could

  989. care for

  990. us,

  991. he could

  992. bring us

  993. in.

  994. And so

  995. now the

  996. scheming

  997. wheels of

  998. Naomi start

  999. to work.

  1000. We see

  1001. that next

  1002. week,

  1003. how she

  1004. tries to

  1005. work it

  1006. out,

  1007. and she's

  1008. thinking,

  1009. there could

  1010. be a future

  1011. here.

  1012. Everything

  1013. that I

  1014. thought was

  1015. bleak,

  1016. she's now

  1017. suddenly

  1018. full.

  1019. Her stomach

  1020. is full,

  1021. her cupboard

  1022. is full,

  1023. and now

  1024. she's

  1025. thinking that

  1026. the future

  1027. is full.

  1028. The

  1029. emptiness

  1030. of chapter

  1031. one is

  1032. wiped away

  1033. in one

  1034. day.

  1035. And so

  1036. for the

  1037. next few

  1038. days she

  1039. works out

  1040. a strategy

  1041. of survival.

  1042. She says,

  1043. Boaz says

  1044. here,

  1045. read the

  1046. text,

  1047. Lord bless

  1048. him,

  1049. Naomi said

  1050. to her

  1051. daughter-in-law.

  1052. He has

  1053. not stopped

  1054. showing his

  1055. kindness to

  1056. the living

  1057. and the

  1058. dead.

  1059. And she

  1060. added,

  1061. that man

  1062. is our

  1063. close

  1064. relative.

  1065. He is

  1066. one of

  1067. our

  1068. guardian

  1069. redeemers.

  1070. Then

  1071. Ruth the

  1072. Moabite

  1073. said,

  1074. he even

  1075. said to

  1076. me,

  1077. stay with

  1078. my

  1079. workers

  1080. until

  1081. they

  1082. finish

  1083. harvesting

  1084. all

  1085. my

  1086. grain.

  1087. And

  1088. Naomi

  1089. said to

  1090. Ruth,

  1091. her daughter-in-law,

  1092. it would be

  1093. good for you,

  1094. my daughter,

  1095. to go with

  1096. the women

  1097. who work for

  1098. him because

  1099. in someone

  1100. else's field

  1101. you might

  1102. be harmed.

  1103. So Ruth

  1104. stayed close

  1105. to the

  1106. women of

  1107. Boaz to

  1108. glean until

  1109. the barley

  1110. and wheat

  1111. harvest were

  1112. finished,

  1113. and she

  1114. lived with

  1115. her mother-in-law.

  1116. So she's

  1117. got a job.

  1118. She has

  1119. somewhere that

  1120. she can go

  1121. every day,

  1122. and she can

  1123. continue to

  1124. keep the

  1125. cupboard

  1126. full.

  1127. And there's

  1128. the hope

  1129. that Boaz

  1130. could be

  1131. the man,

  1132. Boaz

  1133. could be

  1134. the

  1135. redeemer.

  1136. See,

  1137. we all

  1138. need a

  1139. redeemer.

  1140. Could

  1141. Boaz

  1142. be the

  1143. redeemer

  1144. for

  1145. Naomi

  1146. and

  1147. Ruth?

  1148. The

  1149. gospel

  1150. tells us

  1151. that we

  1152. need a

  1153. redeemer.

  1154. We've been

  1155. singing this

  1156. morning about

  1157. the great

  1158. redemption.

  1159. We're going

  1160. to celebrate

  1161. the Lord's

  1162. Supper.

  1163. And what

  1164. do we need

  1165. redeemed

  1166. from?

  1167. The

  1168. Bible

  1169. tells us

  1170. that we

  1171. are lost

  1172. in our

  1173. sin,

  1174. that we

  1175. need

  1176. forgiven.

  1177. Ephesians

  1178. 1 says

  1179. in verse

  1180. 6,

  1181. to the

  1182. praise of

  1183. his

  1184. glorious

  1185. grace,

  1186. which he

  1187. has freely

  1188. given us

  1189. in the

  1190. one he

  1191. loves,

  1192. that is

  1193. Christ.

  1194. In him

  1195. we have

  1196. redemption

  1197. through his

  1198. blood,

  1199. the forgiveness

  1200. of sins

  1201. in accordance

  1202. with the

  1203. riches

  1204. of God's

  1205. grace.

  1206. You see,

  1207. Boaz is a

  1208. picture of

  1209. Christ.

  1210. Boaz is

  1211. the picture

  1212. of our

  1213. protector.

  1214. Boaz is

  1215. the picture

  1216. of our

  1217. provider.

  1218. In the

  1219. Old Testament,

  1220. this little

  1221. book is

  1222. showing us

  1223. something about

  1224. our Lord and

  1225. Savior.

  1226. He's the

  1227. person that

  1228. when we

  1229. come into

  1230. his field,

  1231. he makes

  1232. sure that

  1233. we're protected

  1234. and that

  1235. there's water

  1236. for us to

  1237. drink and

  1238. that there's

  1239. roast his

  1240. grain for

  1241. us to

  1242. eat.

  1243. And that

  1244. no harm

  1245. will come

  1246. to us.

  1247. And he

  1248. did that

  1249. by being

  1250. able to

  1251. buy us

  1252. back by

  1253. going to

  1254. Calvary.

  1255. If you

  1256. don't know

  1257. Jesus this

  1258. morning,

  1259. if you've

  1260. never heard

  1261. the gospel,

  1262. you can see

  1263. it here in

  1264. the book of

  1265. Ruth.

  1266. That's what

  1267. Christ did

  1268. for you.

  1269. He accepted

  1270. the foreigner

  1271. into his

  1272. land.

  1273. And in

  1274. fact,

  1275. all of us

  1276. really were

  1277. foreigners.

  1278. We were

  1279. far away

  1280. from God.

  1281. We were

  1282. far away

  1283. from the

  1284. grace of

  1285. God and

  1286. it is

  1287. only through

  1288. Christ that

  1289. we have

  1290. been brought

  1291. near,

  1292. brought into

  1293. his nation.

  1294. We were

  1295. thinking also

  1296. on Wednesday

  1297. night about

  1298. that great

  1299. verse in

  1300. 1 Peter.

  1301. It says that

  1302. we are a

  1303. holy nation.

  1304. That what we

  1305. have become

  1306. by coming to

  1307. know Christ.

  1308. And so we

  1309. need a

  1310. redeemer.

  1311. My question

  1312. is, do you

  1313. know that you

  1314. need a

  1315. redeemer?

  1316. The idea of

  1317. you get those

  1318. little coupons

  1319. and you can

  1320. go in and you

  1321. can get one

  1322. pound off your

  1323. shopping, you

  1324. redeem the

  1325. coupon.

  1326. Well, this

  1327. is way

  1328. better than

  1329. getting one

  1330. pound off

  1331. your shopping.

  1332. Christ has

  1333. died to pay

  1334. for our

  1335. sins so

  1336. that we

  1337. might know

  1338. him, that

  1339. we might be

  1340. forgiven, that

  1341. eternally when

  1342. he returns or

  1343. when we die,

  1344. that we get to

  1345. be in his

  1346. field forever.

  1347. We get to

  1348. be in his

  1349. field under

  1350. his protection,

  1351. under his

  1352. provision for

  1353. all eternity.

  1354. We're going

  1355. to stand, we're

  1356. going to sing

  1357. a song, before

  1358. that I'm going

  1359. to pray.

  1360. Let's pray

  1361. together.

  1362. Heavenly Father,

  1363. we thank you

  1364. for the

  1365. glorious truth

  1366. that we find

  1367. here in

  1368. church.

  1369. Amen.

  1370. Amen.

  1371. Amen.

  1372. Amen.

  1373. Amen.

  1374. Amen.

  1375. Amen.
