  1. We get there because we lie that the institution of marriage is not going to change, and that is a lie.

  2. The institution of marriage is going to change, and it should change.

  3. And again, I don't think it exists.

  4. So as Christians, as much as we want to be countercultural,

  5. marriage is something that is very countercultural today,

  6. that we can make a stand at what it means to be Christians and to be married if we are married.

  7. That's not to say that we can't be single and be Christians.

  8. But if we are married, that is an opportunity to reflect something different back into the culture.

  9. And I just say that by passing, because we are talking about marriage here this morning.

  10. But let's look at the text.

  11. And so we're going to see here the cost.

  12. We're also going to see it happens at a gate, and it also happens in a seat,

  13. and it also has to do with a shoe.

  14. You say, what do all those things mean?

  15. Well, in verse 1 it says,

  16. So the gate in Bethlehem, as in the gates in Israel at the time,

  17. where basically you would have had the town behind the gate,

  18. so everybody's protected behind the wall.

  19. And all the streets are going to be really narrow,

  20. to the point where actually sunlight might not even get behind the streets.

  21. So the only open space is at the space in behind, directly in behind the gate.

  22. And that's where obviously you would have had all your commerce, your shopkeepers.

  23. It was also basically a metaphorical town hall.

  24. It's where the elders of the town sat.

  25. It's where they discussed matters of importance.

  26. And it's also where they decided legal matters.

  27. Matters like marriage.

  28. Matters like the selling of property.

  29. And so that is why Boaz heads for the gate.

  30. And it just so happens that when he gets there,

  31. the person who he's looking for just also happens just to come by,

  32. just at the right moment.

  33. Because that's, God is involved and Boaz doesn't have long to wait.

  34. And here he is, the man is coming.

  35. If you want to do a little survey of what gates mean in the Old Testament,

  36. you can have a look at Proverbs 8.3 or 22.22 or 1 Kings 22.10.

  37. And it talks about, you know, kings sitting, making decisions at the gate.

  38. Or, you know, your husband being well known and well respected at the gate of your people.

  39. So it's the place where the elders have sat.

  40. And he says, he finds this guy.

  41. It says, come over here, my friend, and sit down.

  42. And that maybe disguises a little bit what the text actually is trying to say.

  43. And so I'm going to ask you a question.

  44. Please don't raise your hand.

  45. But you can maybe nod to me if you know the answer.

  46. Does anybody know who Randolph Peter Best is?

  47. Okay.

  48. Well, you know, that's good.

  49. Because if you do know, it spoils the conclusion.

  50. But if I was to mention John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr,

  51. and I was to say to you, does anybody know who Randolph Peter Best is?

  52. You might make a guess that it was the drummer before Ringo Starr,

  53. before the Beatles became famous.

  54. He's the nobody.

  55. He's that guy over there that missed out on being world famous.

  56. And that's a little bit here what the text is maybe hiding here in the NIV.

  57. It's more like saying, hey, you there, Mr. So-and-so.

  58. Him over there, that guy, the guy with no name.

  59. Come over here and sit down.

  60. The text doesn't actually give this man, this other guardian redeemer, a name.

  61. In fact, as we see in the text, he's actually more concerned about his own name,

  62. and yet the Bible forgets his name.

  63. Maybe it's a lesson there to us that, you know,

  64. if we're concerned with our own life and our own inheritance, we might lose it.

  65. Isn't that what Jesus said?

  66. He who loves his own life in this world will lose it.

  67. But if you give up your life in this world, you will have one through him.

  68. So in contrast to that, I want to ask you, does anybody know who Oscar Schindler is?

  69. And hopefully there's some educated people at least who have seen a film,

  70. and they know that, you know, Oscar Schindler,

  71. he's credited with saving the lives of 1,200 Jews during the Holocaust.

  72. He's someone that did a great deed.

  73. He's someone that did a good thing,

  74. and as a result, history, rightly and correctly,

  75. remembers him as being someone that at great personal cost

  76. rescued people from their death.

  77. And then Sir Boaz has his redeemer.

  78. He has the other person.

  79. He has the other person who you flagged up to Ruth

  80. that was a problem in the whole idea of marriage and redeeming the land.

  81. And so Boaz then, in verse 2,

  82. Boaz took ten of the elders of the town and said,

  83. sit here, and they did so.

  84. So to me, Boaz must have been someone who was well-respected

  85. to early in the morning go and lynch ten elders and say,

  86. you know, come on, you need to sit down.

  87. I've got something to sort out.

  88. And they were to say, oh, yes, Boaz.

  89. And they came and they sat down.

  90. And this other individual, whoever he is,

  91. he came and he sat down.

  92. So they went to the gates,

  93. the place of where authority,

  94. and they came and they sat down

  95. where power would be brokered

  96. and they would be able to create a legal transaction.

  97. So Boaz shows that he's respected

  98. and that everybody agrees just to come and sit down.

  99. And he came and they had to have it.

  100. It numbers ten.

  101. There's no information that says that ten is a legally required number around this time.

  102. But history, as it goes on,

  103. so if you are going to have a synagogue

  104. and you want to constitute a Jewish prayer meeting,

  105. you need today what they call a mignon.

  106. You need ten men.

  107. So there is a historical context of this,

  108. this number ten,

  109. that it's an important number to be able to clarify

  110. or make the transaction legal.

  111. So here we are.

  112. And he's going to then bring about,

  113. why are we here, Boaz?

  114. They're all sitting down.

  115. They're all eager.

  116. They want to find out what on earth this is all about.

  117. So then in verse 3 he says,

  118. then he said to the guardian redeemer,

  119. Naomi, who has come back from Moab,

  120. is selling the piece of land that belonged to our relative Elimelech.

  121. And so the text there is an idea,

  122. has sold or is selling.

  123. There is the prospect that the land is actually owned by someone else

  124. and it needs to be purchased back again.

  125. That's the idea of the text.

  126. Undoubtedly the land is probably in use.

  127. Nobody is going to leave a nice piece of land

  128. in an agricultural economy.

  129. They're not just going to leave it lying there.

  130. They're going to take it and use it.

  131. And so it's interesting.

  132. It's at the end of the harvest

  133. when all of the crops would come in

  134. that this legal transaction is coming to take place.

  135. And so he goes on and he says,

  136. because I thought I should bring the matter to your attention

  137. and suggest that you buy it in the presence of these seated here

  138. and in the presence of the elders of my people

  139. and if you redeem it, do so.

  140. But if you will not, tell me so that I will know,

  141. for no one has the right to do it except you

  142. and I'm nixed in line.

  143. So he goes on and he says,

  144. look, here's the fact.

  145. You are the legal person.

  146. You're the person that needs to reject

  147. before I can purchase it.

  148. And so he gives him the offer and says,

  149. do you want to accept it?

  150. And of course, he says,

  151. quite heartily, very quickly, he says,

  152. I will redeem it, he said.

  153. He's a man of few words,

  154. is Mr. So-and-so.

  155. But he has good financial sense.

  156. It's the prospect of being a hero

  157. and also expanding his portfolio.

  158. He's going to gain land.

  159. He's going to gain land from a widow

  160. who has no prospect of offspring.

  161. He's going to gain land from a widow.

  162. And so that's going to be,

  163. if you like,

  164. it's going to expand his own estate.

  165. It's going to expand his own piece of real estate.

  166. And it means that he's going to pass that on

  167. to his own children.

  168. And so he sees it as a great financial opportunity

  169. and it makes good sense.

  170. And to be honest,

  171. I think if we put ourselves in that situation,

  172. that's exactly what our response would be.

  173. I don't think he's doing anything wrong

  174. by wanting to do this.

  175. Naomi's going to have money.

  176. He's going to seem like a good guy.

  177. He's going to keep the land in the tribe.

  178. But sadly, Naomi and Elimelech's name

  179. is going to be, if you like,

  180. blotted out from the history of Israel.

  181. He's going to lose his inheritance.

  182. But Boaz isn't prepared for that.

  183. So Boaz rightly then

  184. tells him about the other side of the bargain

  185. and he decides to throw a spanner in the works.

  186. In verse 5 it says,

  187. Then Boaz said,

  188. On the day that you buy the land from Naomi,

  189. you also acquire Ruth the Moabite,

  190. the dead man's widow,

  191. in order to maintain the name

  192. of the dead with his property.

  193. I'll highlight to you,

  194. it doesn't really affect the text,

  195. but I highlight it to you just for the purposes.

  196. It's not completely clear in the original text

  197. whether Boaz is saying,

  198. You go ahead and redeem the land.

  199. I'm going to marry

  200. Ruth the Moabite.

  201. And the reality of that is,

  202. if Boaz marries Ruth the Moabite

  203. and produces an heir,

  204. then the land that he's just bought

  205. is going to have to revert back

  206. to the heir.

  207. Or whether or not he's saying

  208. that you're going to have to marry

  209. Ruth the NIV,

  210. in a lot of translations that's what they take.

  211. I just highlight that to you in passing,

  212. just in case you come across it

  213. in your studies.

  214. But it doesn't affect the outcome

  215. or the overall meaning of the text.

  216. So the whole purpose here then

  217. that is being raised then by Boaz

  218. is saying that,

  219. okay, buy the land today,

  220. but you're going to have this other issue

  221. to sort out in the future

  222. with Ruth the Moabite

  223. and her potential offspring.

  224. And so what then is the Redeemer going to do?

  225. So at this the Guardian Redeemer said,

  226. then I cannot redeem it

  227. because I might endanger my own estate.

  228. You redeem it yourself.

  229. I cannot do it.

  230. And so he backs out of the whole deal.

  231. He says, the cost is too great.

  232. I can't do this.

  233. You know,

  234. I have my own inheritance to think about.

  235. I have my own family line to think about.

  236. If I do this,

  237. this might mess that whole thing up.

  238. And so he says, I'm out.

  239. Deal or no deal?

  240. He says, no deal.

  241. So he was a Guardian Redeemer.

  242. He only wanted to go so far.

  243. He only wanted what was in it for himself.

  244. He only liked the deal

  245. while he was benefiting from it.

  246. I think there's a lesson here to us also

  247. in terms of there's lots of things out there

  248. that say to us

  249. that they are the answer to our solutions.

  250. There's lots of self-help books.

  251. There's lots of religious ways.

  252. There's lots of people that say

  253. that if you do this,

  254. if you exercise more,

  255. meditate more,

  256. you know,

  257. be positive in your thinking

  258. or worship this God

  259. or have that philosophy,

  260. that you will have a better life.

  261. But really and truly,

  262. they're a little bit like this

  263. Mr. So-and-so,

  264. this Guardian Redeemer

  265. who,

  266. it's really

  267. only surface.

  268. It's really only beneficial

  269. to the people

  270. selling the philosophy.

  271. So,

  272. just as Orpah,

  273. if you remember in chapter 1,

  274. highlights the great,

  275. shows that Ruth

  276. is making such a great sacrifice

  277. to go with Naomi

  278. and to choose

  279. Israel's God

  280. over the God of the Moabites.

  281. If you like,

  282. Orpah is the foil

  283. that highlights

  284. Ruth's great transaction.

  285. So here,

  286. we have

  287. Mr. No-name.

  288. And what is he highlighting for us?

  289. He's highlighting

  290. what great cost

  291. Boaz is making

  292. to his own personal account.

  293. But before we get to that,

  294. we have this little strange

  295. transaction

  296. to deal with.

  297. In verse 7,

  298. it says,

  299. Now in earlier times in Israel,

  300. for the redemption

  301. and the transfer of property

  302. to become final,

  303. one party took off his sandal

  304. and gave it to the other.

  305. This was the method

  306. of legalizing transaction

  307. in Israel.

  308. So,

  309. please don't,

  310. you know,

  311. if you're selling anything,

  312. take off your shoe

  313. and hand it to someone.

  314. Today,

  315. that doesn't mean anything

  316. and it won't do anything.

  317. There is the idea

  318. that, you know,

  319. it's where you place

  320. your foot is yours.

  321. The idea of walking into the land

  322. and owning the land.

  323. Some people think

  324. the idea is coming back

  325. from that.

  326. And so,

  327. by giving the sandal,

  328. you're saying,

  329. you know,

  330. what was mine

  331. or what is mine by right,

  332. I'm now passing on to you.

  333. I'm not sure I like this idea

  334. of holding somebody's dusty sandal

  335. and, you know,

  336. having to take it.

  337. But anyway,

  338. that's what they were doing.

  339. And so,

  340. that's the meaning here.

  341. I suppose today

  342. it's like a handshake

  343. or, you know,

  344. a spit and a handshake

  345. or I don't know whether you,

  346. you know,

  347. children do pinky promises,

  348. you know,

  349. they have witnesses here.

  350. Please witness this transaction,

  351. you know.

  352. Today,

  353. we go into the solicitor's office

  354. and, you know,

  355. we buy a house.

  356. We sign our name,

  357. sign here,

  358. sign here,

  359. please sign here,

  360. please sign here

  361. and you end up,

  362. you know,

  363. you've signed,

  364. you know,

  365. I don't know how many signatures

  366. if you've ever bought a house.

  367. You will understand that.

  368. You have to sign for the mortgage.

  369. You have to sign,

  370. sign,

  371. sign,

  372. sign.

  373. There we go.

  374. So,

  375. this is the signing,

  376. this is the legalizing here,

  377. that's why he needed the ten elders

  378. and so they're all here.

  379. So,

  380. the guardian redeemer said to Boaz,

  381. buy it yourself

  382. and he removed his sandal.

  383. Off you go.

  384. And so,

  385. we have the shoe,

  386. the transfer of rights,

  387. the purchase of property.

  388. So,

  389. he is free to marry Ruth,

  390. he's free to purchase Naomi's property

  391. and the deal is confirmed.

  392. And so,

  393. there was

  394. the great cost

  395. to Boaz.

  396. So,

  397. everything that the other redeemer

  398. was rejecting,

  399. Boaz is saying,

  400. I'll pay.

  401. I don't mind if it infects my inheritance,

  402. I don't mind.

  403. See,

  404. Boaz is thinking with his heart,

  405. he's thinking with

  406. the law behind him,

  407. he's saying that this is the right thing to do.

  408. If you're ever stuck

  409. and you wonder what thing you should do,

  410. be like Boaz.

  411. I think I can,

  412. the wee stick man that runs around Facebook,

  413. you know,

  414. be like whatever it is.

  415. You should really think about this

  416. and be like Boaz.

  417. Boaz decides things

  418. based on whether they're the right thing to do.

  419. And if you do things based on

  420. whether it's the right thing to do,

  421. I would say more often than not,

  422. you will be doing the right thing

  423. and that's a good way to make your decisions.

  424. And that's what Boaz is doing.

  425. He's saying it's in the law.

  426. It's the right thing to do

  427. regardless of my own

  428. inheritance,

  429. regardless of whether it means

  430. I gain from it,

  431. it's the right thing to do.

  432. And so,

  433. we have the heart

  434. of the redeemer.

  435. We have had the cost.

  436. He's going to buy the field.

  437. He's going to take on

  438. two extra mouths to fill.

  439. He's going to want to take Ruth

  440. as his wife,

  441. but why does he do it?

  442. And so we have,

  443. these three things,

  444. we have selfless action,

  445. we have covenantal action,

  446. and we have loving action.

  447. You see,

  448. what Boaz is doing

  449. is not without emotion,

  450. but it's covenantal.

  451. It's what the law said.

  452. And it's his love for God's law.

  453. It's his love for God.

  454. And it's his love for Ruth.

  455. It's his love for Naomi.

  456. But it's also his love

  457. for the wider family,

  458. for the deceased,

  459. for Elimelech,

  460. for Malon,

  461. for Killon,

  462. Killion.

  463. And we find that in the text.

  464. And this is the last we hear

  465. from Boaz.

  466. So in the rest of the verses,

  467. Boaz doesn't speak.

  468. These are, if you like,

  469. Boaz's final words to us

  470. in the book of Ruth.

  471. Verse 9, it says,

  472. Then Boaz announced

  473. to the elders and all the people,

  474. Today you are witnesses

  475. that I have bought from Naomi

  476. all the property

  477. of Elimelech,

  478. Killon,

  479. and Malon.

  480. And I have also acquired

  481. Ruth the Moabite,

  482. Malon's widow,

  483. as my wife,

  484. in order to maintain

  485. the name of the dead

  486. with his property,

  487. so that his name

  488. will not disappear

  489. from among his family

  490. or from his hometown.

  491. Today you are my witnesses.

  492. So he tells us,

  493. he says,

  494. I have a love,

  495. I have covenantal love.

  496. He is concerned

  497. about other people's names.

  498. He is concerned

  499. about other people's inheritance.

  500. He wants to keep

  501. the property for others

  502. and not himself.

  503. It is a selfless act

  504. of redemption.

  505. Boaz doesn't gain anything

  506. out of this

  507. except financial burden.

  508. And even into the bargain

  509. he has to marry

  510. a foreigner.

  511. Ruth,

  512. the Moabite.

  513. But does it remind us

  514. of someone else?

  515. John 3.16,

  516. For God so loved

  517. the world that he gave.

  518. God so loved

  519. the sinful,

  520. dirty,

  521. stinking world

  522. that didn't love him.

  523. A world that was,

  524. if you like,

  525. his enemies,

  526. that needed help,

  527. that needed rescuing,

  528. that needed redemption,

  529. that he sent

  530. his son.

  531. Christ came

  532. in a selfless

  533. act of redemption.

  534. John 12.25-26,

  535. Is anyone who loves

  536. their life

  537. will lose it,

  538. while anyone

  539. who hates their life

  540. in this world

  541. will keep it

  542. for eternal life?

  543. Whoever serves me

  544. must follow me,

  545. and where I am

  546. my servant will also be,

  547. and my Father

  548. will honor

  549. the one

  550. who serves me.

  551. Is there a heart

  552. in how Boaz

  553. is serving

  554. this family

  555. that says

  556. it's something

  557. that we should do

  558. as Christ laid down

  559. his life

  560. you know,

  561. we should lay down

  562. our lives.

  563. Let's lose our life

  564. for Christ

  565. just as Boaz

  566. decided to,

  567. it cost him

  568. to be a redeemer.

  569. You see,

  570. redemption

  571. costs,

  572. it costs an awful lot.

  573. On the scale of things,

  574. Boaz's redemption

  575. wasn't as costly

  576. as Christ's,

  577. but still,

  578. it cost him a lot.

  579. Greater love

  580. has no one than this

  581. than to lay

  582. down one's life

  583. for one's friends.

  584. And Boaz,

  585. and that is

  586. laying down his life.

  587. He is,

  588. he's risking

  589. his own inheritance.

  590. So what happens then?

  591. What,

  592. what,

  593. it all happens.

  594. It goes through.

  595. Everybody's a witness.

  596. And,

  597. what's the response?

  598. What's the response

  599. to Boaz's redemption?

  600. What do the people say?

  601. What do the elders

  602. at the gate,

  603. what is the people

  604. in the,

  605. you know,

  606. what do they think

  607. of this marriage

  608. between Boaz,

  609. this prominent,

  610. high-standing man

  611. in Israel,

  612. in Bethlehem?

  613. What do they,

  614. what do they,

  615. they think about him

  616. taking on

  617. a Moabite widow

  618. and redeeming Naomi?

  619. Well,

  620. it says,

  621. in verse 11,

  622. it says,

  623. then the elders

  624. and all the people

  625. at the gate said,

  626. we are witnesses.

  627. May the Lord

  628. make the woman

  629. who is coming

  630. into your home

  631. like Rachel and Leah.

  632. Now,

  633. we read that

  634. and we think,

  635. that doesn't mean anything.

  636. But really,

  637. this is the first time

  638. that Ruth

  639. isn't called

  640. a Moabite.

  641. This is

  642. Ruth the Moabite

  643. being

  644. associated with

  645. Rachel and Leah,

  646. if you like,

  647. the mothers

  648. of Israel.

  649. These are the,

  650. from these women

  651. come

  652. the sons

  653. of Israel.

  654. It's from them

  655. that comes the nation.

  656. And in that,

  657. they're embracing Ruth

  658. and saying,

  659. she's one of us.

  660. And not only that,

  661. they're saying,

  662. we hope that she is

  663. as influential

  664. and as well renowned

  665. as Rachel and Leah.

  666. That people will know

  667. the name of Ruth

  668. the Moabite.

  669. See,

  670. there's something special

  671. taking place here

  672. and they're saying that

  673. God is involved.

  674. We want God to bless

  675. this union.

  676. We want God

  677. to bless

  678. Ruth.

  679. This Moabite

  680. who together

  681. built up the family

  682. of Israel.

  683. May you have

  684. standing in a

  685. Pephra

  686. and be famous

  687. in Bethlehem.

  688. May your name

  689. be great.

  690. Mr.

  691. No name

  692. has gone,

  693. but will history

  694. remember

  695. the act of Boaz?

  696. Will history

  697. remember

  698. Ruth

  699. and this act

  700. of redemption?

  701. And so they

  702. are hoping

  703. that there will

  704. be blessing

  705. that God

  706. would make

  707. their name

  708. great

  709. and that they

  710. would be

  711. significant

  712. future blessings

  713. not just for

  714. Bethlehem

  715. but for all

  716. of Israel.

  717. And then we

  718. have this

  719. other figure,

  720. this other

  721. character.

  722. In verse 12,

  723. through the offspring

  724. the Lord gives you

  725. by this young woman

  726. so they're

  727. anticipating baby.

  728. May your family

  729. be like that

  730. of Perez

  731. and Tamar

  732. who bore

  733. to Judah.

  734. And the question

  735. you're answering

  736. is who are

  737. those people?

  738. And that's

  739. very interesting

  740. also.

  741. If you go back

  742. into Genesis

  743. and you find

  744. the story

  745. of Tamar

  746. and Perez

  747. and Judah

  748. so I'll tell

  749. it to you

  750. in brief.

  751. Tamar

  752. was

  753. another

  754. Gentile lady.

  755. She was another

  756. person outside

  757. of Israel

  758. and she married

  759. one of Judah's

  760. sons

  761. and he died.

  762. Then

  763. she married

  764. in the

  765. Leverite marriage

  766. idea

  767. his brother

  768. married her

  769. also.

  770. But he didn't

  771. want to continue

  772. on with the

  773. idea that his

  774. son would then

  775. be considered

  776. his brother's

  777. son so he

  778. made sure

  779. that they

  780. didn't have

  781. children and

  782. so he died.

  783. Judah blamed

  784. Tamar for

  785. both her son's

  786. death and so

  787. he sent her

  788. away.

  789. He had a

  790. third son

  791. and he

  792. didn't give

  793. in to her

  794. in marriage.

  795. And as a

  796. result Tamar

  797. then dresses

  798. up as a

  799. prostitute and

  800. tricks Judah

  801. into sleeping

  802. with her.

  803. And from the

  804. result of that

  805. Perez is born.

  806. So that might

  807. be a lot of

  808. information to

  809. take in

  810. quickly and we

  811. don't want to

  812. preach the

  813. Genesis and

  814. Tamar story but

  815. that is the

  816. background to

  817. what they're

  818. saying here.

  819. you see

  820. Tamar

  821. everything about

  822. that situation

  823. was wrong.

  824. So it just

  825. was completely

  826. wrong but God

  827. blessed it.

  828. And out of that

  829. that Gentile lady

  830. she actually is

  831. one of the

  832. descendants of

  833. Boaz.

  834. Next week we'll

  835. find out how

  836. significant all

  837. of these people

  838. are in terms of

  839. their descendants

  840. and even into

  841. the line of

  842. Christ.

  843. But they're

  844. saying may you

  845. be blessed,

  846. may you be

  847. remembered like

  848. Tamar and

  849. Perez.

  850. So they're

  851. expecting

  852. significance from

  853. their offspring.

  854. And also

  855. they're saying

  856. that we're

  857. accepting her

  858. just as we

  859. accepted the

  860. Gentile Tamar

  861. and her

  862. offspring as

  863. our own so

  864. we will accept

  865. the offspring

  866. of Ruth the

  867. Moabite.

  868. and this is

  869. huge.

  870. This is way

  871. beyond the

  872. expectations if we

  873. remember in

  874. chapter 1.

  875. Naomi was

  876. like go home.

  877. Don't come

  878. to me to

  879. Bethlehem.

  880. Go home.

  881. Go back.

  882. And Ruth's

  883. like no no I'm

  884. coming with you.

  885. I want to

  886. follow your

  887. God.

  888. I want to

  889. stay with you.

  890. And so I'm

  891. going with you

  892. to Bethlehem.

  893. But no one

  894. could have

  895. foreseen or

  896. expected that

  897. here in

  898. chapter 4

  899. everyone in

  900. Bethlehem is

  901. embracing Ruth

  902. as someone who

  903. could be a

  904. blessing to

  905. the nation

  906. of Israel.

  907. And so we

  908. have the

  909. cost.

  910. And so the

  911. people they

  912. are their

  913. witnesses.

  914. They pronounce

  915. blessing and

  916. they want to

  917. be significant

  918. in the family

  919. in Bethlehem.

  920. They're going

  921. to be significant

  922. people.

  923. But this

  924. story doesn't

  925. it really

  926. does just

  927. scream the

  928. gospel.

  929. When we

  930. think about it

  931. and we take a

  932. step back

  933. doesn't it

  934. remind us

  935. of Christ?

  936. John

    John 1 chapter mention

  937. chapter

  938. 1 John

  939. sorry

  940. chapter 2

  941. verse 2

  942. says he is

  943. the atoning

  944. sacrifice for

  945. our sins

  946. and not only

  947. for ours

  948. but for the

  949. sins of

  950. the whole

  951. world.

  952. See Jesus

  953. sat in a

  954. seat of

  955. power.

  956. See after

  957. he died

  958. on the

  959. cross and

  960. paid for

  961. the salvation

  962. of sinners

  963. he rose from

  964. the dead.

  965. And it

  966. says in

  967. Hebrews 10

  968. he says

  969. but when

  970. the priest

  971. had offered

  972. for all

  973. time one

  974. sacrifice for

  975. sins he

  976. sat down

  977. at the

  978. right hand

  979. of God.

  980. You see

  981. Jesus is

  982. sitting he

  983. has made

  984. it a

  985. legal

  986. possibility

  987. for us

  988. to be

  989. free of

  990. guilt.

  991. A legal

  992. possibility

  993. for us

  994. to be

  995. cleansed.

  996. A legal

  997. possibility

  998. for us

  999. to be

  1000. set free

  1001. from sin.

  1002. For us

  1003. to be

  1004. forgiven.

  1005. Jesus

  1006. sat down

  1007. because it

  1008. was finished.

  1009. The work

  1010. that Jesus

  1011. did on

  1012. the cross

  1013. is permanent.

  1014. It had

  1015. witnesses.

  1016. It was

  1017. public.

  1018. And it

  1019. was because

  1020. for God

  1021. so loved

  1022. the world.

  1023. It was

  1024. based in

  1025. the love

  1026. of sinners.

  1027. I don't

  1028. know if

  1029. that makes

  1030. you happy

  1031. this morning.

  1032. It makes

  1033. me extremely

  1034. happy.

  1035. That Christ

  1036. has

  1037. sacrificed

  1038. everything

  1039. for us.

  1040. It says

  1041. in 2 Corinthians

  1042. for you

  1043. know the

  1044. grace of

  1045. our Lord

  1046. Jesus

  1047. Christ

  1048. that though

  1049. he was

  1050. rich yet

  1051. for your

  1052. sake he

  1053. became

  1054. poor

  1055. that so

  1056. through his

  1057. poverty we

  1058. might become

  1059. rich.

  1060. See the

  1061. cross just

  1062. doesn't

  1063. forgive our

  1064. sins it

  1065. actually brings

  1066. us into

  1067. the family

  1068. of God.

  1069. It brings

  1070. us into

  1071. his presence.

  1072. See there's

  1073. room for us

  1074. in the

  1075. family of

  1076. God.

  1077. There's

  1078. room for us

  1079. in God's

  1080. presence.

  1081. Through

  1082. Jesus Christ

  1083. there's room.

  1084. Through

  1085. Boaz

  1086. there was

  1087. room for

  1088. with the

  1089. Moabite

  1090. there was

  1091. room for

  1092. her in

  1093. Bethlehem.

  1094. So we

  1095. have Jesus

  1096. he's a

  1097. better

  1098. redeemer.

  1099. Boaz is

  1100. good but

  1101. Jesus is

  1102. better.

  1103. In fact the

  1104. book of

  1105. Hebrews is

  1106. really all

  1107. about that.

  1108. That verse

  1109. where Jesus

  1110. sat down.

  1111. Jesus is

  1112. better than

  1113. the angels.

  1114. Jesus is

  1115. better.

  1116. He's a

  1117. better high

  1118. priest.

  1119. He's

  1120. better.

  1121. He's

  1122. better because

  1123. he is

  1124. the last

  1125. sacrifice.

  1126. He's

  1127. better because

  1128. he was

  1129. able to

  1130. pay for

  1131. our sins.

  1132. And so

  1133. Jesus paid

  1134. the greatest

  1135. cost.

  1136. So does

  1137. forgiveness,

  1138. does the

  1139. forgiveness of

  1140. our sins

  1141. cost us?

  1142. And the

  1143. answer to

  1144. that, yes

  1145. it does.

  1146. It cost

  1147. Jesus his

  1148. very life.

  1149. Yet it is

  1150. freely offered

  1151. to us if

  1152. we come to

  1153. him in

  1154. faith.

  1155. Let us

  1156. pray.

  1157. God

  1158. will

  1159. in

  1160. peace.

  1161. Peace.
