  1. We have realized that the Old Testament is rich, and every time, you know, certainly in the book of Ruth,

  2. in each chapter, each page, if it was a living person and you were to cut it open, it would bleed the Lord Jesus Christ.

  3. It just pours out from page to page. It tells us something about our Savior and about our salvation.

  4. So let's look at the text this morning, and we'll just read from verse 13 of chapter 4.

  5. So Boaz took Ruth, and she became his wife.

  6. And when he made love to her, the Lord enabled her to conceive, and she gave birth to a son.

  7. The woman said to Naomi, Praise be to the Lord, who is this day has not left you without a guardian redeemer.

  8. May he become famous throughout Israel, and he will renew your life and sustain you in your old age.

  9. For your daughter-in-law, who loves you and who is better to you than seven sons, has given him birth.

  10. Then Naomi took the child in her arms and cared for him.

  11. And the woman living there said, Naomi has a son.

  12. And they named him Obed.

  13. And he was the father of Jesse, the father of David.

  14. So this is the genealogy of David.

  15. This then is the family line of Perez.

  16. Perez was the father of Hezron.

  17. Hezron the father of Ram.

  18. Ram the father of Aminadab.

  19. Aminadab the father of Nashon.

  20. Nashon the father of Salmon.

  21. Salmon the father of Boaz.

  22. Boaz the father of Obed.

  23. Obed the father of Jesse.

  24. And Jesse the father of David.

  25. So how did we get to that list of names at the end of chapter 4?

  26. It started off, if we remember, with a list of names and promise which came into hopelessness.

  27. Yet here we have a list of names after an event which is filled with hope.

  28. In chapter 1 we had Naomi.

  29. Sorry.

  30. Done something to the PowerPoint.

  31. In chapter 1 we have Naomi who became empty.

  32. She was bitter.

  33. She was old.

  34. She had lost her husband and she had lost her two sons.

  35. Everything looked pretty bleak.

  36. She had two daughter-in-laws.

  37. Orpah, if we remember, she went back to her family.

  38. She went back to the Moamites.

  39. But then we had Ruth.

  40. Ruth loved Naomi.

  41. Ruth loved the God of Israel.

  42. And she chose to convert.

  43. She chose to leave her family.

  44. She chose to leave Moab.

  45. And she chose to join Israel.

  46. And she picked Israel and Israel's God and Naomi over her own flesh and blood, over her own family.

  47. And what that tells us is that God's people are people of faith.

  48. Not just of a national identity.

  49. You see, those people who trust in God are truly Abraham's descendants.

  50. It's those that by faith trust in Christ that are the Lord's.

  51. Not those who have some sort of heritage or ethnic leadings.

  52. And in chapter 2, we saw the providence of God in that Ruth happened to come across Boaz's field.

  53. This potential kinsman redeemer or guardian redeemer, as it says in the NIV.

  54. And we found out in that that he was able to provide Ruth with protection from harm while she was working.

  55. He was able to fill up, if you like, the storehouses.

  56. The cupboards were no longer bare.

  57. There was food on the table.

  58. And Naomi was just that little bit less empty.

  59. And in chapter 3, we found that there was a proposal of marriage.

  60. There was hope maybe for Ruth in the future that she would have something and someone to come home to.

  61. Someone to look after her.

  62. And so there was an appeal to Boaz that he would do what was right.

  63. That he would be the guardian redeemer for Ruth and Naomi.

  64. And Naomi, again, was just that little less empty.

  65. And we found them in chapter 3 waiting.

  66. Waiting.

  67. Waiting to see if Boaz would go and do what he should do.

  68. And in some ways, that's where we are this morning.

  69. As a church in the story of salvation, we're waiting.

  70. And what are we waiting for?

  71. We're waiting for the return of Christ.

  72. We're putting our faith and our trust in our redeemer.

  73. And we moved on.

  74. And last week, we had the legal drama.

  75. We had Mr. So-and-so, the person who is of insignificance.

  76. And he was there to tell us and to tell everyone else of the cost of redemption.

  77. What it cost Boaz to redeem Naomi.

  78. To take Ruth as his wife.

  79. And we found the response and the blessing of the elders.

  80. And that they said, Ruth's no longer the Moabite.

  81. She's no longer the widow.

  82. She's going to be the wife of Boaz.

  83. And she's going to be great in Israel.

  84. The blessing of the elders.

  85. And so then, we find that Naomi is just almost to the brim.

  86. She's almost there, but she's not quite completely full.

  87. It's not quite what she had before.

  88. But it's getting there.

  89. And so we have a few questions.

  90. And the questions we have is, who's in control of the world?

  91. Who's in control of history?

  92. And can God be trusted with history?

  93. Is he trustworthy?

  94. Can you?

  95. Can I?

  96. Can we trust God with our future?

  97. I think that the book of Ruth says that yes, we can.

  98. And we'll look at that.

  99. I think if we had ended the book of Ruth here at verse 12,

  100. I think we would have had a nice little heartwarming story

  101. of how God helped a widow and how God helped a Moabite

  102. to integrate into Jewish society, integrate into Israel,

  103. and they had a nice life.

  104. And that was really great for everybody.

  105. And isn't God good?

  106. But I think with these last few verses,

  107. we actually see the expansive nature of how God is that intricately linked

  108. with the lives of ordinary people.

  109. See, it's not just that Ruth and Naomi had Boaz come and redeem them.

  110. We witnessed the hand of God to bring about a blessing,

  111. not just to them, but to you and to me this morning.

  112. There is a blessing from the book of Ruth for us today

  113. because of the plan of God's unfolding salvation,

  114. God's unfolding plan in history,

  115. which is unfolding as we speak, as we live, as we breathe.

  116. We are waiting for the return of our guardian redeemer,

  117. the Lord Jesus Christ.

  118. And this little book, it is, if you like,

  119. a chain in the link that links, if you like,

  120. the first five books of the Bible and Joshua and Judges,

  121. and it links it into the period of the kings.

  122. It's kind of a beginning again story, if you like.

  123. If you think of Eve, and Eve became the mother of all living,

  124. and then you had Rachel and Leah,

  125. and they became the mothers of what we now know as the nation of Israel.

  126. Here you have Ruth, and if you like,

  127. she becomes the mother of the kingdom of Israel,

  128. of the descendants which go on then to David and eventually to Christ.

  129. And so we see God is alive,

  130. and he is working in the lives of ordinary people

  131. to bring about a redemptive purpose.

  132. And God is still at that work.

  133. He's still at his work to use ordinary people

  134. to bring about redemption in the lives of ordinary people.

  135. If you're here this morning and you know the Lord Jesus Christ,

  136. what ordinary people influenced your life

  137. so that you might know the guardian, redeemer of all redeemers, Jesus?

  138. And we might not know the significance of our lives.

  139. We know the significance of Ruth's life

  140. because it's recorded for us in Scripture,

  141. but we don't know necessarily how our life played out,

  142. how it fitted in to God's plan and purposes.

  143. We may have an idea, we may not know.

  144. But we can trust that God is involved,

  145. and God does want to know.

  146. He wants us to know eventually.

  147. And so let's look at what we have here in the text.

  148. This morning we have heavenly matrimony.

  149. We have a marriage that had the design in heaven.

  150. God has brought Boaz and Ruth together.

  151. He has a plan for them,

  152. and we know he has a plan for them,

  153. and we know he has done this.

  154. It says,

  155. So Boaz took Ruth,

  156. and she became his wife.

  157. And when he made love to her,

  158. the Lord enabled her to conceive,

  159. and she gave birth to a son.

  160. They had a little baby.

  161. Little babies are great.

  162. I had two.

  163. They're not so great after their babies,

  164. but when they're babies,

  165. they're great.

  166. The Lord enabled her to conceive.

  167. We know that it was in the plan of God

  168. for them to be together,

  169. because this word here,

  170. the Lord enabled her to conceive,

  171. is actually the same words that said

  172. when the Lord visited his people in chapter 1

  173. and brought them food.

  174. When the Lord was doing something good in Bethlehem,

  175. he visited them.

  176. And he's now doing something significant

  177. in the life of Ruth,

  178. and he has visited Ruth.

  179. And he hasn't visited Ruth just for her own sake.

  180. And he hasn't just visited Ruth for Naomi's sake.

  181. He has visited Ruth for you and for me.

  182. And in his unfolding plan,

  183. he has visited Ruth because he wants to bless the world.

  184. And how he's going to do that is through Ruth the Moabite.

  185. We have to think about this for a little minute.

  186. We don't know how long that Ruth was married

  187. to one of Naomi's sons.

  188. But it could have been as long as 10 years.

  189. And if that's the case,

  190. 10 years of marriage and no children

  191. suggests that, you know,

  192. there's something wrong.

  193. Was it wrong with, you know,

  194. the male and the female or both?

  195. We don't know.

  196. But there was something wrong.

  197. We also know that Boaz was a lot older than Ruth.

  198. And again, we don't want to speculate about how old.

  199. But there is not necessarily the likelihood

  200. that they would conceive.

  201. But here, straight away,

  202. God gives them a child.

  203. It reminds us that God gave lots of other people

  204. important children.

  205. Hannah, you know, gave birth to Samuel.

  206. And obviously, Rachel,

  207. she gave birth to some of the children of Israel.

  208. People who were longing to have children.

  209. And they saw children as a gift from God.

  210. And I think that in that,

  211. we need to stop and to pause and to think,

  212. do we see children as a gift from God?

  213. The Bible is quite clear

  214. that all children are a blessing from God.

  215. In today's culture,

  216. that's not what we see.

  217. Children are an inconvenience in today's culture.

  218. Children are so much an inconvenience

  219. that it's all right to even end a child's life

  220. before it breathes H2O.

  221. That is how much that we've come away

  222. from a biblical moral view

  223. of children as a gift.

  224. I remember that nervous time,

  225. you know, when I walked into,

  226. I think it was a 14-week,

  227. because we were on holidays

  228. and, you know, people were off.

  229. So we had a 14-week scan

  230. rather than the 12-week scan

  231. that everybody has.

  232. And we were nervous, sort of,

  233. parents, what on earth are we going to do?

  234. And, you know, my wife Claire,

  235. she gets up on the table

  236. and they get out the jelly

  237. and they get the machine

  238. and they put it on.

  239. And before us on the screen appeared,

  240. because he was a little bit bigger,

  241. his whole little form,

  242. Elijah, my eldest,

  243. appeared on the screen.

  244. And there he was,

  245. suspended in, like, space animation

  246. on this little, sort of,

  247. green-coloured monitor.

  248. And he was twisting his hands.

  249. Almost, we were saying,

  250. look there, there's our son.

  251. He's waving at us.

  252. He's saying hello.

  253. And it was almost like, you know,

  254. when your mum or your dad

  255. or, you know, someone who you know and love

  256. opens the door and comes into the house,

  257. you don't need to say who's there.

  258. You know who's there.

  259. Well, that day, I knew

  260. that someone had just entered our room.

  261. The thing that, you know,

  262. the secret place is no longer secret

  263. because of science.

  264. And we can see inside the womb

  265. very clearly what goes on.

  266. And that day,

  267. I met my son, if you like,

  268. before he was born.

  269. And that, to me,

  270. is the greatest experience

  271. that I will take with me

  272. to, obviously,

  273. to my grave.

  274. And I will be able to say,

  275. quite clearly,

  276. there's no one will convince me

  277. that Elijah was not there that day.

  278. And that's something

  279. that science cannot quantify.

  280. the human spirit,

  281. the life of an individual.

  282. I say that in passing

  283. because I think it's something

  284. that we need to really embrace

  285. and encourage people

  286. that life is valuable

  287. and it is from God,

  288. it is a gift from God.

  289. And Elijah does that to this day.

  290. When he was born

  291. and he was a little baby,

  292. when he got excited,

  293. he went with his hands.

  294. He still does that.

  295. He's not here,

  296. so I can tell this morning.

  297. But, yeah,

  298. he's nearly 16,

  299. but he still does that.

  300. So there's nobody telling me

  301. that life is not a blessing.

  302. And life is from God.

  303. And here we have a little baby.

  304. A little baby that God has given

  305. to Boaz and to Ruth.

  306. And the Lord enabled her to conceive

  307. and she gave birth to a son.

  308. Wow.

  309. What a tremendous story.

  310. Ruth, the widowed Moabite,

  311. childless baron,

  312. has now a husband.

  313. She now has a son.

  314. But there's going to be

  315. another baby born,

  316. another son,

  317. a son promised.

  318. From Bethlehem.

  319. Bethlehem becomes

  320. a significant place.

  321. And you don't have to turn to it.

  322. I'll read it for you.

  323. But there's a prophecy

  324. in Micah.

  325. And verses 1 to 4,

  326. it says,

  327. Marshal your troops now.

  328. City of troops,

  329. for a siege is laid against us.

  330. And they will strike Israel's ruler

  331. on the cheek with a rod.

  332. But you, Bethlehem,

  333. Epaphrath,

  334. though you are small

  335. among the clans of Judah,

  336. out of you will come for me

  337. one who will be ruler

  338. over Israel,

  339. whose origins are from of old,

  340. from ancient times.

  341. Therefore, Israel will be abandoned

  342. until the time

  343. when she who is in labor

  344. bears a son.

  345. And the rest of his brothers

  346. return to join the Israelites.

  347. And he will stand up

  348. and shepherd his flock

  349. in the strength of the Lord.

  350. You see, the significance

  351. of this little baby

  352. is that one day

  353. there's going to be

  354. another little baby.

  355. We're about to celebrate Christmas.

  356. I think it's around the corner.

  357. People may be trying to

  358. get their Christmas presents in.

  359. But the significance of Christmas

  360. is not Santa Claus.

  361. The significance of Christmas

  362. is not in our presents

  363. or the PlayStations that we want.

  364. It's in the fact that

  365. God came to earth

  366. in human flesh

  367. and that he became

  368. our guardian redeemer.

  369. Do you know

  370. Christ this morning?

  371. Do you know

  372. that you need

  373. a guardian redeemer?

  374. Do you know

  375. that one day

  376. when Christ returns again

  377. to judge the world

  378. that you will need him

  379. to be your guardian redeemer?

  380. If you don't know

  381. what that means,

  382. if you're unsure,

  383. it means that he needs to

  384. buy you back

  385. from slavery.

  386. It means that you are

  387. trapped in sin

  388. and he has died

  389. to save you.

  390. He has died

  391. to make a way

  392. for your sins

  393. to be forgiven.

  394. And he has enabled

  395. through his death

  396. to bring you life.

  397. So there is the promise

  398. of another,

  399. a greater one

  400. that would come

  401. from Bethlehem.

  402. And so in that,

  403. we see that human plans,

  404. they weave in and through

  405. the plan of God.

  406. And we can see

  407. that God has visited

  408. his people,

  409. not just with food,

  410. but he's visited them

  411. by visiting Ruth

  412. in the birth

  413. of this newborn son.

  414. and that this newborn son

  415. is completely

  416. in God's plan.

  417. But we also have

  418. a reversal.

  419. The story then

  420. shifts quite quickly

  421. away from Boaz

  422. and away from Ruth

  423. and it brings Naomi.

  424. Because of the idea

  425. of the guardian

  426. redeemership,

  427. the child is actually

  428. Naomi's

  429. in that he's going

  430. to be Elimelech's heir.

  431. And so we see

  432. that in the text.

  433. And we also see

  434. the women of Bethlehem.

  435. If you remember

  436. in chapter 2,

  437. the women of Bethlehem,

  438. they were saying,

  439. is that Naomi?

  440. Is that her?

  441. The gossip was going

  442. around Bethlehem

  443. and they were saying,

  444. is that, is she back?

  445. Doesn't really look like her.

  446. She looks a bit more

  447. haggard and a bit worn.

  448. Is that Naomi?

  449. But now look at

  450. what they say.

  451. And so the women

  452. of Bethlehem,

  453. they say,

  454. the women said to Naomi,

  455. praise be to the Lord

  456. who this day

  457. has not left you

  458. without a guardian redeemer.

  459. And you say,

  460. hold on.

  461. I thought that was Boaz.

  462. And you say,

  463. yes.

  464. But now this little baby,

  465. he has now the right

  466. to be her guardian redeemer also.

  467. There's redeemers everywhere.

  468. And it says,

  469. may he become famous

  470. throughout Israel

  471. and he will renew your life

  472. and sustain you

  473. in your old age

  474. for your daughter-in-law

  475. who loves you

  476. and who is better to you

  477. than seven sons.

  478. has given him birth.

  479. That's a change

  480. from their questioning,

  481. who's that girl?

  482. She looks a bit,

  483. hmm?

  484. Is that really her?

  485. She's been away a while.

  486. Imagine her coming back

  487. after leaving us

  488. at a time of famine.

  489. You know,

  490. all of those sort of things

  491. that they may have been thinking.

  492. But here they are.

  493. They're praising

  494. for what they can see

  495. God is doing

  496. in the life of Naomi.

  497. Naomi.

  498. And in verse 15,

  499. if you remember

  500. in the first week

  501. we looked at

  502. the whole idea

  503. of turning

  504. and returning

  505. and God is bringing

  506. Naomi back.

  507. And God,

  508. he says,

  509. God brought me back.

  510. God returned me

  511. to Israel.

  512. Well,

  513. here the women

  514. of Bethlehem,

  515. they're saying something

  516. very significant

  517. in verse 15.

  518. It says,

  519. he will renew your life.

  520. And actually what it says,

  521. he will return to you life.

  522. This little baby,

  523. this little guardian redeemer

  524. is going to sustain you

  525. in your old age.

  526. And there's another little baby,

  527. the Lord Jesus Christ,

  528. and he's going to return

  529. to us life.

  530. He is our guardian redeemer.

  531. He is the one

  532. that we need to look to

  533. this morning.

  534. You see,

  535. Naomi was not left

  536. without a guardian redeemer.

  537. This little bundle

  538. that she's now caring for

  539. in her arms

  540. is going to be

  541. the one who can sustain her

  542. in her old age.

  543. He's the one

  544. who will be able

  545. to look after her.

  546. Because in that society

  547. without a man,

  548. without someone

  549. to provide food for her,

  550. she would be left destitute.

  551. And God has not left

  552. his children,

  553. in this case,

  554. destitute.

  555. We need to praise God

  556. for not forgetting Naomi.

  557. And what will this mean?

  558. We need to praise God

  559. for what it means.

  560. It means protection

  561. of Elimelech's name,

  562. his property,

  563. his inheritance

  564. within Israel,

  565. his place within the community,

  566. and her sustained existence.

  567. You see,

  568. Naomi now is completely full.

  569. She is full.

  570. He's going to return

  571. to you new life.

  572. If you want life this morning,

  573. there is only one place

  574. that you can find it.

  575. And that is in

  576. the Lord Jesus Christ.

  577. In John 10, 10,

  578. it says that the thief

  579. comes

  580. to kill,

  581. steal, kill,

  582. and destroy.

  583. But I have come

  584. that you might have life

  585. and have it

  586. to the full.

  587. I am the good shepherd

  588. and the good shepherd

  589. lays down his life

  590. for the sheep.

  591. God didn't leave

  592. Naomi without a Redeemer

  593. and he hasn't left us

  594. without one.

  595. God is concerned

  596. about the future

  597. of Naomi and Ruth.

  598. I would say to you

  599. this morning

  600. that God is concerned

  601. about your future.

  602. And God's always working,

  603. always working

  604. to fulfill his plan.

  605. But we need to be careful here

  606. that it's not about,

  607. you know,

  608. there's many preachers

  609. out there who will tell you,

  610. you know,

  611. Jesus wants to give you

  612. life to the full.

  613. And you say,

  614. yeah,

  615. I can agree with that.

  616. With that,

  617. he then says that

  618. you can have

  619. anything you want.

  620. Just ask God

  621. and he'll give it to you.

  622. And I say,

  623. no,

  624. hold on.

  625. That's not

  626. what the Bible says.

  627. In fact,

  628. Jesus says in

  629. John 16,

    John 16:26

  630. verses 26,

  631. and Jesus answered,

  632. very truly,

  633. I tell you,

  634. you're looking for me

  635. not because you saw

  636. the signs I performed,

  637. but because you ate loaves

  638. and had your fill.

  639. So this is after

  640. the miracle of Jesus

  641. feeding the 5,000.

  642. Do not work for food

  643. that spoils,

  644. but for food that endures

  645. to eternal life,

  646. which the Son of Man

  647. will give you.

  648. For on him,

  649. God the Father

  650. has placed his seal of approval.

  651. And what Jesus is saying is,

  652. don't be working

  653. to build a bigger house here.

  654. Work for the kingdom of God

  655. to build a reward there.

  656. Our focus should not be

  657. on our immediate comfort,

  658. but on the fact

  659. that Jesus is going

  660. to bring comfort

  661. once and for all.

  662. When he returns,

  663. he's going to end

  664. all suffering.

  665. Not now,

  666. but then.

  667. It says in Colossians 2,

  668. it says,

  669. and in Christ

  670. you have been brought

  671. to fullness,

  672. and he is head

  673. over every power

  674. and authority.

  675. See,

  676. already,

  677. we have the fullness

  678. of Christ.

  679. We have his blessing.

  680. We have his redemption.

  681. But then,

  682. we will experience

  683. that fullness

  684. in his kingdom

  685. when he comes.

  686. And it's interesting,

  687. the idea of love,

  688. you would expect

  689. that in the chapter 4,

  690. it says,

  691. and Ruth loved Boaz.

  692. But it doesn't.

  693. It says,

  694. Naomi was loved by Ruth

  695. and was better

  696. than seven sons.

  697. The whole book

  698. is building towards

  699. this climax

  700. of a birth of a son.

  701. And yet,

  702. these ladies say

  703. this remarkable thing

  704. about a Moabite widow,

  705. someone outside

  706. of Israel,

  707. someone who should be

  708. not included in Israel.

  709. And they say

  710. that she should be better.

  711. You know,

  712. she's better

  713. than seven sons.

  714. I think in that,

  715. it's that sons

  716. do what sons do.

  717. Sons grow up,

  718. and if they

  719. don't pass away

  720. as they did

  721. in this case,

  722. they would marry.

  723. And in the natural

  724. scale of things,

  725. that they would

  726. have children.

  727. It's just what

  728. sons do.

  729. But Ruth was not

  730. her son.

  731. Ruth actually

  732. chose.

  733. If you remember,

  734. Ruth chose

  735. to stay

  736. with Naomi

  737. and go back

  738. to Israel.

  739. She chose

  740. the God of Israel.

  741. She didn't have

  742. to do any of this.

  743. And because of

  744. her love for Naomi,

  745. she chose

  746. to do this.

  747. And as a result

  748. of that,

  749. and as a result

  750. of her love,

  751. she now has

  752. this little bundle

  753. of joy.

  754. So in a sense,

  755. sons don't try

  756. to please their mother

  757. with grandchildren,

  758. but Ruth had to.

  759. And the ladies

  760. of Bethlehem,

  761. they realize this,

  762. and they mark that.

  763. It's a remarkable

  764. change from

  765. Ruth,

  766. the Moabite,

  767. to one who's worth

  768. more than seven sons.

  769. I think that's

  770. wonderful.

  771. And so we have

  772. the complete reversal,

  773. the complete reversal

  774. of chapter one

  775. in chapter four.

  776. But we don't end there.

  777. You see,

  778. we continually have

  779. the unfolding

  780. plan of God.

  781. In verse 17,

  782. it says,

  783. the woman living there,

  784. they said,

  785. Naomi has a son,

  786. and they named him

  787. Obed,

  788. and he was the

  789. father of Jesse,

  790. the father of David.

  791. I suppose we could

  792. read that quite quickly

  793. and go,

  794. oh, that's okay,

  795. and we could all

  796. go home.

  797. Or,

  798. I think we're having

  799. lunch later,

  800. we could just,

  801. you know,

  802. stop here.

  803. But what does that

  804. mean?

  805. Baby Obed.

  806. Names mean an awful

  807. lot and have

  808. quite big significance

  809. in the book of Ruth.

  810. we remember that

  811. Naomi was sweet.

  812. But then she said,

  813. call me Mara

  814. because I am bitter.

  815. But now she's quite

  816. happy for everybody

  817. to call her Naomi again.

  818. Naomi is sweet.

  819. So baby Obed

  820. is unusually named

  821. by the ladies of the town

  822. and they call him

  823. Obed.

  824. And this is quite

  825. an odd name

  826. when you think that

  827. Boaz is a man

  828. of standing

  829. in the community.

  830. He owns property.

  831. He has people

  832. working for him.

  833. He's quite respected

  834. in the elders.

  835. But Obed means servant.

  836. Baby Obed

  837. is going to be a blessing.

  838. He's going to serve

  839. the people

  840. of Bethlehem.

  841. But I know

  842. a better servant

  843. who's going to be born

  844. in Bethlehem.

  845. Mark 10 says,

  846. for even the Son of Man

  847. did not come

  848. to be served,

  849. but to serve

  850. and to give his life

  851. as a ransom

  852. for many.

  853. See,

  854. we have an even better

  855. Obed,

  856. an even better

  857. servant.

  858. And so we have

  859. the baby servant

  860. Obed,

  861. but we have

  862. the man Christ

  863. Jesus who came

  864. to seek

  865. and to save us

  866. and to serve us

  867. by giving us

  868. his life.

  869. And then we have

  870. the line

  871. to David.

  872. We have this little

  873. small genealogy

  874. that says

  875. they named him Obed

  876. and he was the

  877. father of Jesse

  878. and the significance

  879. of that is then

  880. he was the father

  881. of David.

  882. Now I want you

  883. to work this out

  884. maybe.

  885. King David,

  886. the greatest king

  887. that Israel ever knew.

  888. So if anybody

  889. says to you,

  890. you see that Bible,

  891. it's made up.

  892. No one would

  893. make this up.

  894. And just,

  895. that's my word

  896. to you this morning.

  897. If you were going

  898. to write a back story

  899. for your hero,

  900. if you're going

  901. to write a back story

  902. for the greatest king

  903. of Israel,

  904. you're not going

  905. to make this

  906. your back story.

  907. you're not going

  908. to make the back story

  909. that you came from

  910. a Moabite widow.

  911. That's not how

  912. you're going to,

  913. if you like,

  914. fabricate a genealogy.

  915. And I think that

  916. attests to its

  917. historic accuracy

  918. and its truth

  919. that this is history.

  920. This really happened.

  921. This is David's

  922. great-grandmother,

  923. Ruth.

  924. But we also know

  925. that if you want

  926. to flick over

  927. in your Bible,

  928. maybe you haven't

  929. realized this,

  930. but you can flick

  931. over to Matthew.

  932. I'm not sure

  933. what page that is

  934. in the church Bible.

  935. Maybe someone

  936. might find it

  937. and shout it out

  938. if that's helpful.

  939. 955.

  940. So it's 965

  941. if you're struggling

  942. to find it.

  943. My Bible doesn't

  944. want to turn there

  945. either,

  946. so don't worry.

  947. So Matthew

    Matthew 1:1

  948. chapter 1,

  949. verse 1.

  950. We have a different

  951. genealogy

  952. than the one

  953. that's recorded

  954. in Ruth 18.

  955. It says,

  956. this is the genealogy

  957. of Jesus Christ,

  958. the Messiah,

  959. the greater

  960. son of David,

  961. son of Abraham.

  962. And it reads,

  963. see Abraham

  964. was the father

  965. of Isaac,

  966. Isaac the father

  967. of Jacob,

  968. Jacob the father

  969. of Judah,

  970. and his brothers

  971. in Judah

  972. the father of Perez

  973. and Zerah

  974. whose mother

  975. was Tamar.

  976. Perez the father

  977. of Hezron,

  978. Hezron the father

  979. of Ram,

  980. Ram the father

  981. of Aminadab,

  982. Aminadab the father

  983. of Nashon,

  984. Nashon the flower

  985. of Salmon,

  986. Salmon the father

  987. of Boaz

  988. whose mother

  989. was Rahab,

  990. and Boaz

  991. the father

  992. of Obed

  993. whose mother

  994. was Ruth.

  995. And Obed

  996. the father

  997. of Jesse,

  998. and Jesse

  999. the father

  1000. of King David.

1001. And if you read on down

1002. and it gets to the end,

  1003. it then says,

1004. And Jacob, the father of Joseph,

  1005. the husband of Mary,

1006. and Mary was the mother of Jesus

1007. who is called the Messiah.

1008. You see, in this little story,

  1009. Ruth didn't know,

  1010. David didn't know,

1011. that they were taking part

  1012. in a genealogy

1013. that was going to be added to.

  1014. And that genealogy

1015. was going to go right the way through

1016. and to the Lord Jesus Christ himself.

1017. And we see that unfolding plan.

1018. And so we learn from that

1019. and we ask the question,

  1020. is God in control?

1021. In a time, as we reminded earlier,

1022. when Israel had no king,

  1023. what was God doing?

1024. God was about his work.

1025. He was moving people around.

1026. He was moving Ruth to Boaz.

  1027. Boaz to Obed.

1028. Because he had a plan

1029. to bring about a king in Israel.

1030. And his plan was to bring about David,

  1031. Israel's greatest human king.

1032. But we know that David

  1033. wasn't good enough.

  1034. We know that David,

1035. as great a king he was,

1036. as great as a man

  1037. after God's own heart,

1038. as the Bible tells us,

1039. as great as a musician he was

1040. and all the songs that he wrote,

1041. he just wasn't quite good enough.

1042. In fact, he was a murderer.

1043. In fact, he committed adultery.

  1044. He fell into sin.

1045. His family was a little bit broken up.

  1046. In fact, he morally,

1047. he just didn't quite meet the mark, did he?

1048. And so we needed someone greater than David.

1049. And we only find that

1050. in the person of the Lord Jesus Christ.

1051. So where are we heading to?

1052. Well, we're heading to somewhere else.

1053. And I would like to say,

  1054. I'm heading home.

1055. You know, the Bible would say

1056. that this world is not our home.

  1057. We're heading for a city

  1058. whose builder and maker

  1059. is God himself.

1060. And so if we turn in Revelation,

1061. if you want to turn there,

  1062. Revelation chapter 7,

    Revelation 7 chapter mention

1063. I'm going to read some verses for you.

1064. And so if you're a Christian this morning,

  1065. this is about you.

  1066. This is our future.

1067. This is what we are waiting for.

1068. And then verse 9 says,

1069. And after this I looked,

1070. and there before me was a great multitude

1071. that no one could count.

  1072. You know,

1073. from every nation, tribe, people, and language,

  1074. standing before the throne

  1075. and before the Lamb.

1076. And they were wearing white robes

1077. and they were holding palm branches

  1078. and in their hands

1079. and they cried out in a loud voice

1080. as we sang this morning,

1081. Salvation belongs to our God

1082. who sits on the throne

  1083. and to the Lamb.

1084. And all the angels were standing

  1085. around the throne

  1086. and they,

  1087. with the elders

1088. and the four living creatures,

1089. and they fell down in their faces

  1090. before the throne

  1091. and they worshipped God

  1092. saying, Amen,

1093. praise and glory and wisdom

  1094. and thanks and honor

  1095. and power and strength

  1096. be to our God

  1097. forever and ever.

  1098. Amen.

1099. And it says just on down there

  1100. in verse 15,

  1101. Therefore they are before

  1102. the throne of God

  1103. and they serve Him

1104. day and night in His temple.

1105. And He who sits on the throne

  1106. will shelter them

  1107. in His presence.

1108. And this is where we get

  1109. the fullness of Christ.

1110. Never again will they hunger.

1111. Never again will they thirst.

1112. And the sun will not beat down on them

1113. and nor any scorching heat.

1114. For the Lamb at the center of the throne

  1115. will be their shepherd

1116. and He will lead them

1117. to springs of living water

1118. and He will wipe away

1119. every tear from their eyes.

  1120. Amen.

1121. If you know and you love

  1122. the Lord Jesus Christ,

  1123. that is your future.

  1124. The future of Brexit

  1125. is in the hands

  1126. of the politicians.

  1127. You could say,

  1128. but my future

  1129. is in the hands

  1130. of my kinsman,

  1131. Redeemer.

1132. The sad part of this

1133. is that if you don't know

  1134. Christ on that day,

1135. that will not be your future.

  1136. Your future will be

  1137. marred by

  1138. by the judgment

  1139. and payment

  1140. of your own sin.

  1141. And on that day,

  1142. you will need

  1143. a kinsman,

  1144. Redeemer.

  1145. You will need someone

  1146. who will legally stand,

  1147. if you like,

  1148. before God

  1149. and say,

  1150. know He's mine.

  1151. And if you don't

  1152. know Christ this morning

1153. and you don't have that,

1154. I would urge you to

  1155. to make Jesus

  1156. your guardian,

  1157. Redeemer.

  1158. But for us

  1159. who know

  1160. and know the Lord,

  1161. we're looking forward

  1162. to a day

  1163. when we'll never again

  1164. be hungry,

  1165. never again thirst,

  1166. never again

  1167. will we need

  1168. to put on

  1169. Factor 50 sun cream,

  1170. especially

  1171. for me.

  1172. I burn,

  1173. you know,

  1174. quite into the sun.

1175. The rest of my family,

  1176. they all tan

  1177. in an instant.

  1178. There's a picture,

  1179. I think,

1180. of me and my sister

  1181. and she looks like

  1182. she comes from,

  1183. you know,
