  1. So let us hear the word of God, starting at verse 1.

  2. To the elders among you, I appeal as a fellow elder and a witness of Christ's sufferings,

  3. who will also share in the glory to be revealed.

  4. Be shepherds of God's flock that is under your care watching over them,

  5. not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be,

  6. not pursuing dishonest gain, but eager to serve,

  7. not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock.

  8. And when the chief shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that will never fade away.

  9. In the same way, you who are younger, submit yourselves to your elders.

  10. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility towards one another,

  11. because God opposes the proud, but shows favour to the humble.

  12. Humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand,

  13. that he may lift you up in due time.

  14. Cast all your anxiety on him, because he cares for you.

  15. Be alert and of sober mind.

  16. Your enemy, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.

  17. Resist him.

  18. Standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world

  19. is undergoing the same kind of sufferings.

  20. And the God of all grace,

  21. who called you to his eternal glory in Christ,

  22. after you have suffered a little while,

  23. will himself restore you

  24. and make you strong, firm, and steadfast.

  25. To him be the power forever and ever.

  26. Amen.

  27. With the help of Silas,

  28. whom I regard as a faithful brother,

  29. I have written to you briefly,

  30. encouraging you

  31. and testifying that this is the true grace of God.

  32. Stand fast in it.

  33. She who is in Babylon,

  34. chosen together with you,

  35. sends you her greetings.

  36. And so does my son Mark.

  37. Greet one another with a kiss of love.

  38. Peace to all of you

  39. who are in Christ.

  40. Dan.

  41. Dan.

  42. Dan.

  43. Good morning.

  44. Good morning.

  45. Before we start,

  46. let's just go to the Lord in prayer.

  47. Father, we give you great glory and thanks

  48. for yet another day to gather in your name.

  49. the privilege of being able to bring our concerns

  50. and our anxieties to you,

  51. regardless of where we've come from this week,

  52. whether we find ourselves doing well

  53. or doing not so well.

  54. We give you thanks for what you've done in our life.

  55. So help us to lay our concerns at the altar of your throne,

  56. to open our hearts and minds

  57. to the truths and the realities

  58. of what your word would have us learn this morning.

  59. As we continue in our worship through the word,

  60. may we enter into worship with you.

  61. We ask these things in Jesus' name.

  62. Amen.

  63. Really is difficult to believe this is the last Sunday.

  64. I'll be with you in this series.

  65. And a lot of people have been asking me

  66. how I'm feeling about this being the last Sunday.

  67. And I've been responding with,

  68. it's kind of bittersweet.

  69. It'll be good to get back to my hometown,

  70. home congregation,

  71. but it's hard to leave

  72. because it's been just a great time of blessing

  73. being here and ministering to you

  74. and with you

  75. and praying for you

  76. and praying with you.

  77. And really, it's felt like our home church

  78. for the last couple of months.

  79. So it's really been our church family

  80. while we've been here.

  81. It's also been a great reminder to me

  82. that there are things going on

  83. outside of the little bubble

  84. that we can create in our own local environment,

  85. in our hometowns.

  86. It's a great reminder to me

  87. that we're not alone in this fight.

  88. And that's just what this Christian walk is.

  89. It's a fight.

  90. It's a war.

  91. We're all soldiers in this war,

  92. in Christ's army.

  93. And we wage war every day,

  94. not with guns,

  95. not with bombs or swords or shields

  96. or all that kind of thing,

  97. but with prayer,

  98. with fellowship,

  99. with kindness and love.

  100. And that's what I've been reflecting on

  101. as I'm bringing you this last message this morning,

  102. the idea that we're servants

  103. and soldiers.

  104. In fact,

  105. the title of today's sermon is

  106. We Are Servant Soldiers.

  107. We serve and we fight.

  108. So we're going to look at two things

  109. in terms of being servant soldiers,

  110. what Peter has to say.

  111. We are to be humble towards one another

  112. and we are to fight against sin.

  113. Be humble towards one another

  114. and fight against sin.

  115. So let's dive in at verse one.

  116. To the elders among you,

  117. I appeal as a fellow elder

  118. and as a witness of Christ's sufferings

  119. who will also share in the glory

  120. to be revealed.

  121. Remember that Peter is writing

  122. not to a specific church somewhere,

  123. like the church in Carrig

  124. or the church in Middleton or wherever,

  125. but he's writing to all the churches

  126. in what we now call Turkey.

  127. So it's not one particular church,

  128. one particular problem,

  129. one particular group of elders.

  130. This is a message for all churches

  131. in all contexts at all times.

  132. And he grounds his appeal in three things.

  133. Take a look at verse one.

  134. He says, I'm a fellow elder,

  135. so I understand what your calling is

  136. and I share that responsibility.

  137. He says, I'm a witness of Christ's sufferings.

  138. I actually saw him nailed to the cross.

  139. I was there when he died

  140. and I was there when he rose.

  141. And he says, I'll also share

  142. in the glory to be revealed.

  143. I'll share in the glory to be revealed.

  144. I'm your fellow brother in Christ.

  145. Not just an elder,

  146. not just a witness of Christ's sufferings,

  147. but I will participate with you

  148. one day in the glory

  149. that will be revealed

  150. when Jesus calls us to himself.

  151. And on the basis of that,

  152. Peter is saying, I get it.

  153. I get the responsibilities that you have,

  154. elders.

  155. I know why Christ died.

  156. And I share in this fellowship with you

  157. in Christ.

  158. And on that basis,

  159. verse two,

  160. Peter says,

  161. be shepherds of God's flock

  162. that is under your care,

  163. watching over them.

  164. Shepherd,

  165. pastor,

  166. overseer,

  167. elder,

  168. they're all words for the same thing.

  169. They all describe

  170. the same duties

  171. and responsibilities

  172. of those who lead

  173. in the local church.

  174. And now this isn't just for elders.

  175. I'll come to you in a second.

  176. But let's let the text speak

  177. for itself first.

  178. Still in verse two,

  179. Peter says,

  180. watch over the flock,

  181. not because you must,

  182. but because you are willing,

  183. as God wants you to be.

  184. Have you ever thought

  185. the only reason that you're serving

  186. in a particular way

  187. is because nobody else will do it?

  188. Because there's nobody else there

  189. to fill the gap.

  190. You might also want to do it.

  191. Maybe you do,

  192. maybe you don't.

  193. But it's still easy

  194. when we think like that

  195. to get self-important.

  196. Well, I'm filling in this gap.

  197. I'm so important.

  198. I'm such a martyr for the cause.

  199. And it's easy to develop this complex

  200. or to be entitled about things.

  201. And Peter says,

  202. don't do that.

  203. Don't.

  204. Just put that thing to death

  205. and serve humbly,

  206. not haughtily.

  207. And here's the thing.

  208. Because we're all people,

  209. this is news to you, right?

  210. Because we're all people,

  211. we all do this

  212. from time to time.

  213. It's going to happen.

  214. So for example,

  215. when someone else is preaching,

  216. it's really easy for me to sit there

  217. and be thinking,

  218. oh, I wouldn't have stressed that point.

  219. I wouldn't have used that application

  220. or drawn out that illustration.

  221. And just like it's easy for others to do that

  222. when I'm standing up here.

  223. Or it's easy for us to get an attitude that,

  224. well, I'm really the only one

  225. who's capable of doing this,

  226. so I guess I'll just get on with it

  227. and do it.

  228. No real joy,

  229. just a sense of entitlement,

  230. wanting constant pats on the back,

  231. that sort of thing.

  232. And you know,

  233. the one thing I have to pray for,

  234. the hardest,

  235. when I get up to preach,

  236. is against all those things.

  237. Is that it wouldn't go to my head.

  238. That when I do have someone

  239. who gives me good feedback

  240. or plaudits or whatever,

  241. that I wouldn't start getting too big

  242. for my boots.

  243. And let's be honest,

  244. Peter talks about selfish gain.

  245. I'm not exactly going to become a millionaire

  246. by being a preacher in Ireland in 2019.

  247. Not in this church,

  248. and not in Middleton anyway.

  249. Maybe there are churches out there

  250. where it might happen, but...

  251. I might be able to make a reputation

  252. for myself, though.

  253. I might be able to get people to see,

  254. oh, you know,

  255. there's this guy down in Middleton

  256. and you really want him to come to preach.

  257. That can go to my head.

  258. I might get in a position

  259. to influence other people

  260. by taking the word

  261. and not necessarily teaching what it says,

  262. but using it to manipulate people

  263. and to influence them

  264. in a way I would like them to be.

  265. Or I might be able to get

  266. a certain amount of public limelight

  267. on myself.

  268. Be in the spotlight.

  269. That's still gain, isn't it?

  270. That's still something I get

  271. out of doing this.

  272. And I ought not minister

  273. for those reasons.

  274. Just as Johnny was talking about,

  275. we're saved by Jesus

  276. and therefore

  277. we ought to be humble.

  278. Because of the sacrifice

  279. that Jesus made.

  280. You know,

  281. I'm not standing here going,

  282. oh, well,

  283. Jesus paid for my sins,

  284. so I'll just lord it over everybody.

  285. I'll just show everybody

  286. I know the best.

  287. Peter says,

  288. don't do that.

  289. Verse 3,

  290. don't lord it over people

  291. who might be looking to you

  292. to lead or to shepherd

  293. or to disciple,

  294. but by being,

  295. and underline this word,

  296. an example

  297. to the flock.

  298. An example

  299. to the flock.

  300. You know those times

  301. like I have them

  302. when you're thinking about

  303. raising your kids,

  304. do as I say,

  305. not as I do.

  306. Don't copy what I'm doing,

  307. just do what I tell you to do.

  308. And Peter says,

  309. get that out of your head.

  310. Not do as I say,

  311. not as I do.

  312. Be an example,

  313. he says.

  314. Paul,

  315. the apostle Paul,

  316. exhorted the Corinthians

  317. to follow his example

  318. just as he followed

  319. Christ's example.

  320. Faithful.

  321. Temperate.

  322. Even-tempered.

  323. Self-controlled.

  324. Sober.

  325. Honest.

  326. Hospitable.

  327. And here's the point.

  328. This isn't just for elders

  329. or pastors.

  330. No one's sitting here

  331. wondering,

  332. oh, well,

  333. that's okay then.

  334. I'm not a pastor,

  335. I'm not an elder,

  336. I don't need to be humble

  337. or faithful

  338. or all that kind of things.

  339. But because Peter says,

  340. elders,

  341. be an example

  342. to the flock,

  343. this is a picture

  344. of how all believers

  345. ought to imitate

  346. the character

  347. and the deeds

  348. of Christ.

  349. And if that's how elders

  350. ought to behave,

  351. how pastors ought to behave

  352. as an example,

  353. then maybe think about

  354. things like this.

  355. do we want people

  356. to be saying,

  357. he's so great

  358. with the kids' ministry

  359. or she's such a wonderful

  360. addition to the

  361. whatever ministry?

  362. It might be.

  363. But is that what we

  364. want people to say?

  365. Do we want the plaudits?

  366. Do we want the pat on the back

  367. and the recognition?

  368. Or are we happy

  369. just serving,

  370. just using our gifts

  371. as God gave them to us

  372. without wanting

  373. this public recognition?

  374. Or how about this,

  375. kind of linking in

  376. with what I just said

  377. about preaching.

  378. Do we view our ministries

  379. as stepping stones

  380. to bigger things?

  381. So bigger churches,

  382. flashy worship music,

  383. whatever.

  384. Are we content

  385. that God,

  386. as Paul says

  387. in 1 Corinthians 12,

  388. has placed the members

  389. of the body

  390. just where he wants them

  391. for his glory

  392. and to serve

  393. and to give him glory?

  394. Do we think

  395. we know better than others?

  396. Even if we do,

  397. sometimes.

  398. Are we kind

  399. and gentle

  400. and humble

  401. in our service?

  402. In other words,

  403. friends,

  404. do we make this

  405. all about us?

  406. All of this,

  407. the seating,

  408. the music,

  409. the preaching,

  410. the kids ministry,

  411. do we make this

  412. all about us

  413. and our gifts

  414. and our abilities

  415. and our ministry

  416. and our church?

  417. Even verse 5,

  418. have a look at this.

  419. Even if we're not elders

  420. or officers in the church,

  421. do we puff ourselves up

  422. and act like it?

  423. Do we think we know better

  424. than the church leaders

  425. and therefore

  426. we don't submit to them?

  427. Now that's not to say

  428. that doesn't happen

  429. sometimes,

  430. regularly,

  431. a lot of the time,

  432. whatever you want to say,

  433. but that's not the point.

  434. The point is

  435. whether or not

  436. we're willing

  437. to submit

  438. and to defer

  439. to the church leaders

  440. just as the church leaders

  441. submit

  442. and defer

  443. to Christ

  444. and offer themselves up

  445. as an example

  446. for the rest of us

  447. to follow.

  448. Are we humble

  449. towards one another?

  450. It's not about

  451. our talents.

  452. It's not about

  453. whether we know better

  454. or we have the right ideas

  455. or plans

  456. or whatever the case.

  457. This isn't about us.

  458. This is about

  459. Jesus.

  460. This is all

  461. for Jesus.

  462. And so much of our walk

  463. depends on humility.

  464. I was reflecting on this

  465. during the week

  466. and I don't think

  467. I'm going out on the limb

  468. to say this

  469. that I think the greatest

  470. part of our flesh

  471. that we have to be

  472. actively crucifying

  473. every day

  474. is all this

  475. me, me, me stuff.

  476. It's all about me.

  477. It's all about what I can do.

  478. Because if we can do that,

  479. if we can

  480. work on those things,

  481. if we sow that seed

  482. and we water it

  483. with the word of God

  484. and with the fellowship

  485. of the local church,

  486. then we'll see it grow

  487. and we'll see it produce

  488. its fruit

  489. in its season.

  490. Verse 4,

  491. if these attitudes

  492. are in us,

  493. if these are the fruit

  494. of our faith,

  495. then we receive

  496. the crown

  497. of glory.

  498. The crown

  499. of glory.

  500. So what crown is this?

  501. Well,

  502. remember what Jesus said?

  503. Whoever exalts himself

  504. will be humbled.

  505. Whoever humbles himself

  506. will be exalted.

  507. And that's exactly

  508. what Peter says

  509. in verse 6.

  510. Humble yourselves.

  511. Bring yourselves low,

  512. therefore,

  513. under God's mighty hand

  514. that he might lift you up

  515. in due time.

  516. Bring yourself low.

  517. Humble yourself.

  518. Empty yourself

  519. so that at the right time

  520. Christ will exalt you,

  521. will lift you up,

  522. raise you up,

  523. and seat you

  524. with himself

  525. at the right hand

  526. of God.

  527. Because at the end of it,

  528. friends,

  529. isn't that what Jesus did?

  530. Emptied himself,

  531. made himself nothing,

  532. and humbled himself

  533. to the point of death,

  534. even on a cross,

  535. so that he might be exalted

  536. and that we might be exalted

  537. with him.

  538. this isn't just about

  539. being nice to people

  540. for the sake of it.

  541. This is about echoing

  542. the very life

  543. of Jesus himself

  544. because that echo,

  545. while imperfect

  546. and while incomplete,

  547. that echo,

  548. that modeling out

  549. of this character of Christ

  550. is the fruit

  551. of the life

  552. of somebody

  553. whose heart says

  554. it's all

  555. for Jesus.

  556. It's all about him.

  557. In this war,

  558. in this Christian life,

  559. we are servant soldiers

  560. and we serve

  561. by being humble

  562. towards one another.

  563. Secondly,

  564. finally,

  565. have a look at verse 8.

  566. Since we are servant soldiers,

  567. we fight against sin.

  568. Verse 8 says,

  569. Be alert,

  570. be of sober mind.

  571. Your enemy,

  572. the devil,

  573. prowls around

  574. like a roaring lion

  575. looking for someone

  576. to devour.

  577. I read a lot

  578. about strange things

  579. in the lead up to sermons.

  580. This week isn't too bad.

  581. It was lions.

  582. So, you know,

  583. pretty easy.

  584. If you don't know

  585. anything about lions,

  586. then you at least know

  587. that they're pretty

  588. fearsome hunters.

  589. And some of you

  590. have cats,

  591. like I do.

  592. And now,

  593. my cat,

  594. you know,

  595. she wouldn't exactly

  596. win the cat version

  597. of Mastermind

  598. or whatever.

  599. You know,

  600. you could take her,

  601. stick her in front

  602. of an open door

  603. with a bit of cheese.

  604. She'd miss the cheese

  605. and still bang her head

  606. against the door.

  607. But despite all those things,

  608. she's still one heck

  609. of a hunter

  610. because she's a cat.

  611. Quiet,

  612. stealthy,

  613. quick,

  614. lethal.

  615. And she's only

  616. a house cat.

  617. She's only the size of,

  618. I don't know,

  619. half his laptop.

  620. If you take a lion,

  621. just like smaller cats,

  622. the thing about them

  623. is that they stalk

  624. their prey.

  625. They slowly

  626. and they patiently

  627. walk around

  628. in the long grass,

  629. hidden,

  630. not letting themselves

  631. get given away

  632. until they absolutely

  633. have to.

  634. And I was reading

  635. that lions

  636. generally won't charge

  637. at their prey

  638. until they're basically

  639. right up on top

  640. of them.

  641. Satan does

  642. the same thing.

  643. It's not like

  644. the movies

  645. or whatever

  646. where Satan

  647. has bright red skin

  648. and horns on his head

  649. and a pitchfork

  650. and a tail

  651. and hooves

  652. and he's not going

  653. to come up to you

  654. wearing a sign

  655. that says,

  656. hi,

  657. I'm Satan,

  658. I'm here to tempt you today.

  659. You're not going

  660. to have a personal

  661. encounter

  662. with the devil himself.

  663. Not because he's not real,

  664. he's very real,

  665. but because the whole

  666. world lies

  667. in the power

  668. of the evil one,

  669. Paul tells us.

  670. John tells us,

  671. excuse me.

  672. World.

  673. Kosmos

  674. is the Greek word.

  675. The orderly arrangement

  676. of the whole world system

  677. is fundamentally influenced

  678. by Satan

  679. and by sin himself.

  680. So be alert,

  681. Peter says.

  682. Just be awake.

  683. Just be realistic.

  684. Know that this is

  685. the devil's playground.

  686. It's where he's at work.

  687. And not just that,

  688. but be sober,

  689. he says.

  690. It's actually the third time

  691. Peter has used that word

  692. in this letter.

  693. Be sober.

  694. Clear-headed.

  695. Free from anything

  696. intoxicating.

  697. Go out of your way

  698. to avoid intoxication

  699. because the things

  700. that cause them,

  701. maybe they're not bad

  702. in and of themselves,

  703. but the things

  704. that cause them

  705. are ways

  706. Satan uses

  707. to tempt you

  708. into sin.

  709. Things like this.

  710. Since he said sober,

  711. let's start with alcohol.

  712. There's nothing wrong with it

  713. in and of itself.

  714. You can have a drink

  715. if you like.

  716. Jesus himself

  717. was pretty familiar

  718. with the wine production process.

  719. But if you can't have

  720. just one drink,

  721. or if when you drink

  722. you get gossipy,

  723. angry,

  724. lustful,

  725. whatever,

  726. simply put,

  727. don't drink.

  728. Be sober.

  729. How about career?

  730. As a civil servant,

  731. I think about this often.

  732. Again,

  733. not bad by itself.

  734. Good to have goals.

  735. Good to have aspirations.

  736. But when we covet

  737. a career,

  738. and we esteem it

  739. higher

  740. than how we treat

  741. other people,

  742. then we're going to

  743. start to think

  744. a little bit less

  745. about what that

  746. ladder climbing means

  747. when we hurt people,

  748. or we

  749. cheat people,

  750. or we step

  751. on people.

  752. Here's a topical one.

  753. Being involved

  754. in politics.

  755. We live in a democracy.

  756. It's good to be

  757. civically aware,

  758. informed,

  759. active,

  760. all that kind of thing.

  761. But be careful

  762. how you do this.

  763. This is a double-edged sword.

  764. Don't just read things

  765. by people you already

  766. agree with,

  767. and reinforce

  768. your own ideas

  769. about things.

  770. Because the next step

  771. is don't demonize

  772. people

  773. that you disagree with.

  774. Don't act like

  775. the person who

  776. disagrees with you

  777. on any particular subject,

  778. even if they agree

  779. with you

  780. on everything else,

  781. is somehow

  782. a fascist

  783. or a communist

  784. or whatever the case

  785. might be,

  786. whatever names

  787. you might call them.

  788. Don't become

  789. one of the hysterical

  790. voices,

  791. and there are many

  792. of them out there,

  793. the hysterical voices

  794. that get outraged

  795. by everything

  796. and anything.

  797. I've said it before,

  798. the most common word

  799. in Ireland

  800. is disgraceful.

  801. The health service

  802. is disgraceful,

  803. or bus fare

  804. went up by five cents.

  805. It's disgraceful.

  806. Don't be one

  807. of those people.

  808. Be mindful

  809. about how people

  810. can hear

  811. and interpret

  812. your words

  813. and your actions,

  814. whether in person,

  815. social media,

  816. whatever the case

  817. might be.

  818. In other words,

  819. Peter says,

  820. be alert.

  821. Wake up.

  822. Just actively

  823. be on the lookout

  824. for all of these

  825. things that can

  826. sneak up on you

  827. like a predator

  828. and devour you.

  829. Usually not all

  830. at once.

  831. I don't know about you,

  832. but I know from

  833. my own experience

  834. that those times

  835. in my life

  836. where I've sinned

  837. in a very visible

  838. kind of way,

  839. it's never been

  840. in isolation.

  841. If I'm honest,

  842. and I think

  843. if you're honest

  844. when we look

  845. at those things,

  846. we look back

  847. and we'll see

  848. this trail

  849. of seemingly

  850. little insignificant

  851. things that lead

  852. up to them.

  853. the little white lie

  854. or,

  855. well,

  856. it's only five euro,

  857. I'll put that

  858. in the expense account

  859. or just little things

  860. like that add up

  861. because James says

  862. each person

  863. is tempted

  864. when they are

  865. dragged away

  866. by their own

  867. evil desire

  868. and enticed

  869. and then after

  870. desire has conceived,

  871. it gives birth

  872. to sin

  873. and sin,

  874. when it grows up,

  875. gives birth

  876. to death.

  877. This isn't a game.

  878. This is serious stuff.

  879. Jesus said,

  880. if your right eye

  881. causes you to sin,

  882. gouge it out.

  883. If your right arm

  884. causes you to sin,

  885. cut it off.

  886. If there is something

  887. in your life

  888. that is fundamentally

  889. getting in the way

  890. of you glorifying God

  891. by the way

  892. you live your life,

  893. get rid of that thing.

  894. I don't know

  895. what it is.

  896. You know

  897. what it is.

  898. And the Lord

  899. knows what it is.

  900. The Puritan

  901. John Owen

  902. said it this way,

  903. be killing sin

  904. or sin

  905. will be killing you.

  906. Be killing sin

  907. or sin

  908. will be killing you.

  909. So verse 9,

  910. we need to resist

  911. the works of Satan

  912. in our lives.

  913. We need to recognize

  914. what we are tempted by.

  915. We need to limit

  916. our exposure

  917. to those things.

  918. And then we need to

  919. do what we often

  920. do last

  921. after everything else.

  922. Pray

  923. against those things.

  924. Pray against

  925. whatever it is

  926. that you are

  927. struggling with.

  928. Pray by yourself.

  929. Involve your spouse,

  930. your best friend,

  931. an elder in this church,

  932. whoever.

  933. Pray against

  934. those things.

  935. Resist the devil,

  936. James says,

  937. and he will flee

  938. from you.

  939. Prayer is more

  940. powerful

  941. than psychology

  942. or philosophy

  943. or anything like that.

  944. It's a weapon

  945. in the believer's armor.

  946. And remember,

  947. we're not alone.

  948. Jesus brought us

  949. from death to life

  950. not to be by ourselves,

  951. as I've said so often

  952. through this series,

  953. but to be born again

  954. into a family

  955. of believers.

  956. A family that

  957. transcends

  958. nationality

  959. and language

  960. birthplace,

  961. whatever.

  962. And just like

  963. the world,

  964. the church

  965. and the world over

  966. suffers,

  967. no matter where they are,

  968. we all sin.

  969. No matter where we are.

  970. We're all tempted.

  971. We all stumble.

  972. And even though

  973. we seek to glorify God

  974. in our lives,

  975. as Paul says,

  976. who will rid me

  977. from this body

  978. of sin?

  979. We're still here.

  980. We're still in the reality

  981. of living here.

  982. In a fallen world

  983. in Ireland

  984. in the 21st century.

  985. And so we need to pray

  986. against these things.

  987. And to remember this,

  988. this world can be hard.

  989. Cruel.

  990. Bleak.

  991. So when our relationships

  992. fail

  993. and break up,

  994. or when our kids

  995. get sick,

  996. or our loved ones

  997. die,

  998. or our workplaces

  999. are full of gossip

  1000. and strife

  1001. and bitterness

  1002. and unpleasantness,

  1003. when the depression

  1004. overcomes you,

  1005. when the eviction notice

  1006. comes through the door,

  1007. back in verse 7,

  1008. cast all your anxiety

  1009. on him

  1010. because he cares

  1011. for you.

  1012. Friends,

  1013. in this world,

  1014. Jesus said,

  1015. we will have suffering.

  1016. It will happen.

  1017. But fear not,

  1018. Jesus said,

  1019. I have overcome

  1020. the world.

  1021. Jesus has destroyed

  1022. death

  1023. and sin

  1024. itself

  1025. so that regardless

  1026. of what happens

  1027. in this life,

  1028. regardless of what

  1029. Satan throws at us,

  1030. if we hold fast

  1031. to Christ,

  1032. then we get

  1033. this crown of glory.

  1034. We go to be

  1035. with him forever.

  1036. Verse 10,

  1037. fight against sin,

  1038. resist the devil,

  1039. and the God

  1040. of grace

  1041. who has called us

  1042. to eternal glory

  1043. with Christ.

  1044. will,

  1045. after the suffering,

  1046. restore us

  1047. to strength

  1048. and firmness

  1049. and steadfastness,

  1050. even when it's hard,

  1051. even when we have

  1052. setbacks,

  1053. even when we think

  1054. we're not being

  1055. the best Christian

  1056. in the world,

1057. and we never will be,

  1058. by the way.

1059. In all of these things,

  1060. we still look forward

  1061. to that day

  1062. when Jesus calls us

  1063. to himself

1064. and there's no more death

  1065. and every tear

  1066. will be wiped away

  1067. and there'll be

  1068. no more suffering

  1069. and no more pain

  1070. and you get

  1071. a nice new body.

  1072. Some of us

  1073. are looking forward

  1074. to that.

  1075. Fear not,

  1076. Jesus said,

  1077. I have overcome

  1078. the world.

  1079. I'm just about done.

  1080. I've taken you

  1081. through this letter

  1082. which is just loaded

  1083. with these deep,

  1084. great truths

  1085. about God,

  1086. his love

  1087. and his plan

  1088. for redeeming us,

  1089. what that ought

  1090. to look like

  1091. in our lives.

  1092. And I sincerely hope

  1093. it's impacted you.

  1094. I sincerely hope

1095. that you get a sense

1096. of just what great mercy

  1097. God bestowed on us

1098. when he sent his son

  1099. to die

  1100. so that he would

  1101. save us out

  1102. of the world.

  1103. As Peter says,

  1104. verse 12,

  1105. and this is what

  1106. I've tried to do

  1107. over the last couple

  1108. of months,

  1109. I have written

  1110. to you briefly,

  1111. verse 12,

  1112. encouraging you

  1113. and testifying

  1114. that this

  1115. is the true

  1116. grace

  1117. of God.

  1118. Stand fast

  1119. in it.

  1120. This is the grace

  1121. of God.

  1122. It is the unmerited

  1123. favor,

  1124. the undeserved

  1125. favor that he

  1126. bestows on those

  1127. who come in faith

  1128. to Jesus.

  1129. Nothing you have

  1130. to do.

  1131. You don't sign

  1132. anything.

  1133. There's no secret

  1134. handshake.

  1135. None of that

  1136. kind of stuff.

  1137. Just come in faith.

  1138. So be a servant

  1139. soldier.

  1140. Be humble

  1141. in your dealings

  1142. with your fellow

  1143. man and woman

  1144. inside the church

  1145. and outside

  1146. the church.

  1147. Fight against

  1148. sin.

  1149. Be killing

  1150. sin

  1151. day by day.

  1152. Watch out

  1153. for the lion

  1154. that's prowling

  1155. around

  1156. looking for ways

  1157. to devour you.

  1158. Remember that

  1159. God chose you.

  1160. That he called

  1161. you out of darkness

  1162. into the glorious

  1163. light.

  1164. That Christ

  1165. suffered once

  1166. for sins,

  1167. the righteous

  1168. for the unrighteous,

  1169. to bring you

  1170. to God,

  1171. having himself

  1172. being made alive

  1173. in the spirit,

  1174. the same spirit

  1175. that now lives

  1176. in you

  1177. if you profess

  1178. Christ.

  1179. If you didn't

  1180. know it before,

  1181. you certainly

  1182. know it now,

  1183. two months later.

  1184. I'm not one for

  1185. mincing words.

  1186. If it's true,

  1187. it's true.

  1188. If you don't

  1189. follow Jesus,

  1190. here's my final

  1191. plea.

  1192. Follow him.

  1193. God became

  1194. man

  1195. and suffered

  1196. death

  1197. that you

  1198. might have

  1199. life.

  1200. Jesus

  1201. is not

  1202. one way

  1203. to God

  1204. out of many

  1205. ways.

  1206. In the words

  1207. of Jesus

  1208. himself,

  1209. he said,

  1210. I am

  1211. the way,

  1212. the truth,

  1213. and the life,

  1214. and no one

  1215. comes to the

  1216. Father except

  1217. through me.

  1218. There is no

  1219. other name

  1220. here on earth

  1221. or anywhere

  1222. in the universe

  1223. on which you

  1224. can call

  1225. and have any

  1226. hope of

  1227. anything

  1228. after this

  1229. brief life

  1230. here on earth.

  1231. It's Jesus

  1232. or it's

  1233. nothing.

  1234. So as we

  1235. close,

  1236. if there's only

  1237. one thing you

  1238. take away from

  1239. my time with

  1240. you,

  1241. that'd be

  1242. this.

  1243. This is not

  1244. about us.

  1245. This is about

  1246. Jesus.

  1247. It's all

  1248. about Jesus.

  1249. it's all

  1250. his.

  1251. As verse 11

  1252. says,

  1253. to him

  1254. be the

  1255. power

  1256. or the

  1257. glory

  1258. or the

  1259. dominion.

  1260. To him

  1261. be the

  1262. power

  1263. forever

  1264. and ever.

  1265. And all

  1266. God's people

  1267. said,

  1268. Amen.

  1269. Let's pray.

  1270. Father,

  1271. we thank you

  1272. that your

  1273. word is like

  1274. a double-edged

  1275. sword and

  1276. it pierces

  1277. to the

  1278. division of

  1279. bone and

  1280. marrow and

  1281. soul and

  1282. spirit.

  1283. We thank you

  1284. for the

  1285. reminders that

  1286. you have

  1287. given us

  1288. through your

  1289. word that

  1290. we are

  1291. chosen,

  1292. that we are

  1293. kept,

  1294. that we are

  1295. shielded.

  1296. We also

  1297. thank you that

  1298. you're honest

  1299. enough to

  1300. tell us the

  1301. truth,

  1302. that we

  1303. must fight

  1304. against sin,

  1305. that we

  1306. must be

  1307. humble.

  1308. humble us

  1309. Lord,

  1310. in the

  1311. ways where

  1312. we glorify

  1313. ourselves and

  1314. exalt

  1315. ourselves.

  1316. We ask

  1317. you for

  1318. your mercy.

  1319. We ask

  1320. for your

  1321. grace once

  1322. more to

  1323. pour over

  1324. us and

  1325. to make

  1326. us realize

  1327. that this

  1328. is not

  1329. about us.

  1330. This is

  1331. about you.

  1332. Wherever we

  1333. serve,

  1334. whatever we

  1335. say,

  1336. whatever we

  1337. do,

  1338. help us to

  1339. do it for

  1340. your glory,

  1341. not for

  1342. our own.

  1343. Be with us

  1344. Lord,

  1345. as we

  1346. live out

  1347. our lives

  1348. here in

  1349. this fallen

  1350. world as

  1351. new creations,

  1352. help us to

  1353. be salt and

  1354. light to the

  1355. world around

  1356. us, a

  1357. beacon of

  1358. hope in

  1359. a world of

  1360. darkness.

  1361. Help us to

  1362. say the right

  1363. words with

  1364. the right

  1365. attitude and

  1366. give us ears

  1367. to listen when

  1368. we simply need

  1369. to listen.

  1370. For those who

  1371. don't know

  1372. you, for

  1373. those who

  1374. don't call on

  1375. your name,

  1376. maybe even

  1377. sitting here or

  1378. listening right

  1379. now, be

  1380. drawing them

  1381. to you,

  1382. Father.

  1383. Give them

  1384. the realization

  1385. that they

  1386. have been

  1387. drawn to

  1388. where they

  1389. can hear

  1390. your word,

  1391. where they

  1392. can hear the

  1393. good news

  1394. that you

  1395. sent your

  1396. son who

  1397. died so

  1398. that we

  1399. might have

  1400. life.

  1401. Be working

  1402. in them,

  1403. Holy Spirit,

  1404. convicting

  1405. them and

  1406. breaking down

  1407. their barriers

  1408. and drawing

  1409. them to

  1410. you so

  1411. that they

  1412. would declare

  1413. that Jesus

  1414. his Lord.

  1415. Be with

  1416. us as we

  1417. go to

  1418. the Lord's

  1419. table and

  1420. remind ourselves

  1421. of these

  1422. great truths

  1423. that you

  1424. sent your

  1425. son as

  1426. the suffering

  1427. servant,

  1428. as the

  1429. humble

  1430. sacrifice

  1431. who didn't

  1432. open his

  1433. mouth but

  1434. who went

  1435. willingly like

  1436. a lamb to

  1437. the slaughter.

  1438. Help us to

  1439. remember that

  1440. we are part of

  1441. one body with

  1442. many members

  1443. others and

  1444. that together

  1445. we seek to

  1446. glorify you.

  1447. We ask these

  1448. things in

  1449. Jesus' name.

  1450. Amen.

  1451. Amen.

  1452. We're going to

  1453. sing together in

  1454. response the

  1455. song Jesus

  1456. all for

  1457. Jesus.

  1458. Do we have

  1459. that the

  1460. that the

  1461. only place

  1462. that we

  1463. should run

  1464. to, the

  1465. only one

  1466. who we

  1467. should commit

  1468. our life

  1469. to is

  1470. him.

  1471. So let's

  1472. stand together.

  1473. Amen.
