  1. Then God said, Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish, in the sea, in the birds, in the sky, and over the livestock, and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.

  2. So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them, male and female he created them.

  3. God blessed them and said to them, Be fruitful, and increase in number, fill the earth and subdue it, rule over the fish in the sea, and the birds in the sky, and over every living creature that moves on the ground.

  4. Then God said, I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth, and every tree that has fruit with seed in it.

  5. They will be yours for food.

  6. And to all the beasts of the earth, and all the birds in the sky, and all the creatures that move along the ground, everything that has the breath of life in it, I give every green plant for food.

  7. And it was so.

  8. God saw all that he had made, and it was very good.

  9. And there was evening, and there was morning, the sixth day.

  10. Well, let's pray.

  11. Let's see what we can learn from God's word today.

  12. Let's pray.

  13. The God who spoke this universe into being, out of nothing,

  14. creating life, creating mankind, making us.

  15. Father God, we ask that you now will speak to us

  16. through your word in such a way

  17. that it grabs a hold of us

  18. and helps us to see clearly

  19. who we are,

  20. how we should live,

  21. and what it means to be

  22. your image bearers.

  23. Father, I pray that you will change us today,

  24. change us for good,

  25. change us so that we would

  26. reflect your glory

  27. better.

  28. We pray this

  29. in Jesus' name.

  30. Amen.

  31. Look with me at

  32. chapter 1, verse 1,

  33. the first verse of the Bible.

  34. In the beginning,

  35. God created

  36. the heavens and the earth.

  37. Now go to verse 26,

  38. where we started our reading.

  39. Then God said,

  40. let us make mankind in our image,

  41. in our likeness,

  42. so that they may rule over the fish,

  43. the sea,

  44. and the birds of the sky.

  45. Did you notice a change

  46. in those two verses?

  47. We've been given some new information

  48. about God.

  49. Look again closely

  50. at verse 26.

  51. Then God said,

  52. let us

  53. make mankind

  54. in

  55. our

  56. image.

  57. So,

  58. who is the us

  59. and the

  60. our?

  61. It seems that God

  62. is a lot more complex

  63. than we first thought.

  64. While we're not given

  65. all the details

  66. at this point in Scripture,

  67. we are being given

  68. an insight

  69. into who God is.

  70. As we read

  71. through the Bible,

  72. God is always referred to

  73. God as one.

  74. There is only one God,

  75. but yet this God

  76. can speak of himself

  77. as us

  78. and our.

  79. As we read the Bible

  80. progressively,

  81. bit by bit,

  82. God reveals

  83. that God is

  84. one

  85. in

  86. three persons.

  87. The us

  88. and the our

  89. will become

  90. identified as

  91. the Father,

  92. the Son,

  93. and the Spirit.

  94. So,

  95. when God says

  96. in verse 26,

  97. then God said,

  98. let us

  99. make mankind

  100. in

  101. our

  102. image,

  103. God is declaring

  104. that he is a

  105. relational

  106. kind of

  107. God.

  108. He already

  109. enjoys an

  110. eternal

  111. loving relationship

  112. within himself.

  113. He talks

  114. within himself.

  115. They come

  116. to an agreement

  117. that we're going

  118. to make

  119. mankind.

  120. mankind.

  121. The Father,

  122. the Son,

  123. and the Spirit

  124. are united

  125. in perfect

  126. harmony.

  127. So,

  128. when God

  129. creates mankind,

  130. he doesn't do it

  131. because he needs

  132. anyone.

  133. It's not as if

  134. God is bored

  135. or that he's

  136. somehow lonely,

  137. but God

  138. longs to share

  139. the joy

  140. he has

  141. within himself

  142. with

  143. mankind.

  144. God takes

  145. delight in

  146. creating

  147. mankind.

  148. He creates

  149. us.

  150. He's created

  151. you

  152. to welcome

  153. us

  154. that we

  155. would share

  156. in his

  157. eternal

  158. loving

  159. relationship.

  160. So,

  161. this morning

  162. we're going

  163. to look

  164. together at

  165. who we

  166. are made

  167. to be.

  168. Made

  169. to be

  170. in relationship

  171. with God.

  172. First,

  173. made in

  174. God's

  175. image.

  176. We're really

  177. going to be

  178. focusing on

  179. verses 27

  180. and 28.

  181. So,

  182. look at

  183. verse 27.

  184. God

  185. created

  186. mankind

  187. in his

  188. own

  189. image.

  190. In the

  191. image of

  192. God,

  193. he created

  194. them.

  195. Male

  196. and female,

  197. he created

  198. them.

  199. So,

  200. three things

  201. we're going

  202. to see

  203. from this

  204. verse.

  205. First,

  206. look at

  207. image.

  208. An image

  209. is a

  210. reflection.

  211. Like when

  212. you looked

  213. in the

  214. mirror

  215. this

  216. morning

  217. in the

  218. bathroom,

  219. you see

  220. a reflection

  221. of yourself.

  222. It's not

  223. your true

  224. self,

  225. but an

  226. image

  227. of

  228. yourself.

  229. Now,

  230. God

  231. creates

  232. us

  233. to be

  234. his

  235. image

  236. bearers,

  237. to

  238. reflect

  239. him.

  240. God

  241. can't

  242. be seen,

  243. he's not

  244. a physical

  245. being like

  246. us,

  247. but his

  248. intention

  249. is,

  250. is that

  251. he would

  252. be reflected

  253. in human

  254. form and

  255. character.

  256. We are

  257. to be

  258. a visible,

  259. representation

  260. of the

  261. invisible

  262. God.

  263. Think of

  264. it like

  265. this,

  266. it's really

  267. quite

  268. extraordinary.

  269. Think of

  270. the sun

  271. and its

  272. brilliant

  273. light

  274. shining by

  275. day.

  276. At night,

  277. the sun

  278. is still

  279. shining on

  280. the other

  281. side of

  282. the world

  283. to where

  284. we are,

  285. and its

  286. light is

  287. reflected on

  288. the surface

  289. of the moon,

  290. which in

  291. turn shines

  292. back down

  293. on the

  294. earth.

  295. So the

  296. sun

  297. reflects its

  298. light off

  299. the moon

  300. back down

  301. to earth.

  302. Now,

  303. the reflected

  304. light is not

  305. the same as

  306. the sun's

  307. light.

  308. We can't

  309. see the

  310. sun,

  311. but it's

  312. a reflection

  313. of that

  314. light.

  315. So as

  316. God's

  317. image

  318. bearers,

  319. we are

  320. to reflect

  321. the beauty

  322. and greatness

  323. of God.

  324. We were

  325. created and

  326. designed in

  327. such a way

  328. that we

  329. would shine

  330. forth his

  331. glory,

  332. that we

  333. would display

  334. his love,

  335. his justice,

  336. his mercy,

  337. his purity.

  338. God

  339. wonderfully

  340. creates an

  341. image of

  342. himself,

  343. and you

  344. and I

  345. were created

  346. to be that

  347. very image.

  348. So,

  349. image.

  350. But,

  351. verse 27,

  352. in the

  353. image of

  354. God,

  355. he created

  356. them,

  357. male and

  358. female,

  359. he created

  360. them.

  361. God's

  362. reflection is

  363. to be seen

  364. in mankind,

  365. and the

  366. different kinds

  367. of mankind,

  368. if we want

  369. to put it

  370. like that,

  371. are male

  372. and female.

  373. Both

  374. equally

  375. reflect the

  376. image of

  377. God.

  378. One is not

  379. better,

  380. and one is

  381. not less

  382. than the

  383. other.

  384. Men and

  385. women are

  386. equal in

  387. value,

  388. worth,

  389. and dignity.

  390. There's no

  391. inferiority,

  392. and no

  393. superiority.

  394. Now,

  395. while male

  396. and female

  397. are equally

  398. God's image

  399. bearers,

  400. that doesn't

  401. mean to

  402. say that

  403. God is

  404. somehow

  405. 50% male,

  406. and 50%

  407. female,

  408. and he

  409. kind of

  410. makes images

  411. of half

  412. and half.

  413. No,

  414. we saw

  415. last week,

  416. didn't we,

  417. that God

  418. is distinct

  419. from humanity.

  420. He's not

  421. like us.

  422. He's not

  423. restricted to

  424. a physical

  425. body.

  426. But yet,

  427. we are to

  428. reflect his

  429. image.

  430. Men and

  431. women are

  432. to display

  433. his

  434. character.

  435. Now,

  436. before we

  437. move on,

  438. it's important

  439. to underline

  440. here that

  441. God has

  442. created

  443. gender.

  444. We are

  445. either male

  446. or female.

  447. We're not

  448. interchangeable

  449. beings.

  450. And it's

  451. important because

  452. gender is

  453. being redefined,

  454. we'll read

  455. about it and

  456. hear about it,

  457. as something

  458. that is

  459. fluid,

  460. not fixed.

  461. In other

  462. words,

  463. we are not

  464. assigned our

  465. gender at

  466. birth,

  467. but we

  468. choose our

  469. gender at

  470. will.

  471. This ideology

  472. is summed up

  473. in a picture

  474. book written

  475. for four-year-old

  476. children called

  477. The Gender

  478. Fairy.

  479. It tells the

  480. children,

  481. quote,

  482. Only you

  483. know if

  484. you are a

  485. boy or a

  486. girl.

  487. No one

  488. can tell

  489. you.

  490. And the

  491. author's

  492. hope is

  493. this,

  494. to quote

  495. again,

  496. Some

  497. children will

  498. realise that

  499. their true

  500. identity is

  501. not the

  502. gender they

  503. were assigned

  504. at birth,

  505. and will

  506. choose to

  507. make a

  508. social transition

  509. to live as

  510. their true

  511. gender.

  512. Picture

  513. book written

  514. for four-year-olds.

  515. You see,

  516. behind this

  517. gender ideology

  518. is essentially

  519. a search for

  520. identity.

  521. Who am I?

  522. Looking for

  523. meaning and

  524. purpose.

  525. And the good

  526. news that we've

  527. been looking at

  528. at the beginning

  529. of Genesis is

  530. that we were

  531. created for

  532. something much

  533. greater than

  534. we could ever

  535. choose or

  536. design for

  537. ourselves.

  538. We were

  539. created by

  540. God to

  541. share in

  542. his joy

  543. and to

  544. reflect his

  545. glory.

  546. This is

  547. where all

  548. humanity

  549. finds our

  550. true happiness

  551. and purpose.

  552. Of course,

  553. gender

  554. struggles are

  555. a very real

  556. issue, and

  557. they shouldn't

  558. be ignored.

  559. We need to

  560. lovingly

  561. listen and

  562. show

  563. compassionate

  564. care.

  565. We need to

  566. gently come

  567. alongside

  568. people of

  569. all ages and

  570. all backgrounds.

  571. parents.

  572. We need to

  573. support parents

  574. whose children

  575. may struggle.

  576. We are to

  577. show very

  578. simply and

  579. clearly that

  580. we were

  581. designed and

  582. created by

  583. God to

  584. share in

  585. his joy and

  586. reflect his

  587. glory as

  588. male and

  589. female.

  590. To help us

  591. more on

  592. this, I

  593. highly recommend

  594. a book by

  595. Sharon James

  596. called Gender

  597. Ideology.

  598. I have this

  599. little book

  600. here.

  601. The quote

  602. that I read

  603. to you comes

  604. from it.

  605. Really helpful,

  606. very short.

  607. Have a look

  608. at it.

  609. Read it.

  610. Or if you

  611. want to talk

  612. to me further

  613. about these

  614. things, please

  615. do.

  616. We're created,

  617. male or

  618. female, to

  619. be God's

  620. image bearers.

  621. Now this

  622. makes it

  623. wonderfully

  624. unique.

  625. All of us,

  626. male and

  627. female, are

  628. created as

  629. God's image

  630. bearers.

  631. Nothing else

  632. in all

  633. creation has

  634. the privilege

  635. of being

  636. image bearers.

  637. Every single

  638. person, rich

  639. or poor,

  640. abled or

  641. disabled, black

  642. or white, all

  643. of mankind

  644. are equally

  645. and uniquely

  646. made in

  647. God's image.

  648. That means,

  649. and Ralph

  650. touched on

  651. this in

  652. Psalm 8,

  653. that we are

  654. above the

  655. animals, but

  656. under God.

  657. God's image

  658. and we're

  659. all equal, but

  660. we're above

  661. the animals, but

  662. under God.

  663. That is, we're

  664. not the same as

  665. animals.

  666. We were created

  667. to be thinking,

  668. rational human

  669. beings, giving

  670. love and receiving

  671. love with feelings

  672. and emotions.

  673. We were made to

  674. commune with God

  675. and be in

  676. relationship with

  677. God.

  678. So, we are not

  679. the same as

  680. animals.

  681. We're above the

  682. animals, but we're

  683. also under God.

  684. God.

  685. We're not

  686. God with

  687. infinite power

  688. and wisdom.

  689. We're not

  690. autonomous,

  691. independent beings.

  692. We were created

  693. to be like

  694. God and in

  695. relationship with

  696. God, but always

  697. under God.

  698. Now, the

  699. problems begin

  700. when we reduce

  701. human beings to

  702. the status of

  703. an animal.

  704. When we do

  705. that, life is no

  706. longer valued.

  707. Life can be

  708. terminated at will,

  709. like you do to

  710. a pet who's no

  711. longer wanted,

  712. or when the

  713. pet gets sick.

  714. Well, let's put

  715. it down.

  716. After all, we're

  717. just all animals,

  718. aren't we?

  719. It's okay to do

  720. that.

  721. In the same way,

  722. the problems begin

  723. when we take the

  724. place of God or we

  725. put ourselves equal

  726. or above God.

  727. We become the

  728. rule makers and

  729. the decision makers

  730. and we make rules

  731. that are no longer

  732. good for us,

  733. but ultimately

  734. harm us.

  735. Listen, to be

  736. created as God's

  737. image bearers,

  738. that means we are

  739. male and female

  740. and we are

  741. wonderfully unique

  742. in the place of

  743. all creation.

  744. This is God's

  745. design of us and

  746. it's always best

  747. for us.

  748. So, we're made

  749. in God's image

  750. and then second,

  751. we're to live out

  752. this image.

  753. Having created

  754. mankind, God

  755. now shows us

  756. how we are to

  757. live as his

  758. image bearers.

  759. Again, three

  760. things we're going

  761. to focus on

  762. in verse 28.

  763. Here's the first

  764. one.

  765. God blessed

  766. them and said

  767. to them,

  768. be fruitful

  769. and increase

  770. in number.

  771. Go and have

  772. more children,

  773. increase the

  774. number of

  775. people.

  776. In other words,

  777. image bearers

  778. are to go and

  779. make more

  780. image bearers.

  781. God's design

  782. is that it

  783. would be one

  784. man and one

  785. woman who

  786. would enter

  787. into covenant

  788. relationship with

  789. God and with

  790. each other and

  791. make more image

  792. bearers.

  793. Have children so

  794. that they too

  795. will reflect the

  796. glory and

  797. greatness of

  798. God.

  799. That's the

  800. purpose.

  801. If you have

  802. children, their

  803. purpose is to

  804. reflect the

  805. glory and

  806. greatness of

  807. God.

  808. Now, as we'll

  809. see in a

  810. minute, we're

  811. living post-fall.

  812. Life is now

  813. broken.

  814. Physically and

  815. biologically, our

  816. bodies don't

  817. always function as

  818. they should and

  819. sadly, it's

  820. sometimes the

  821. case that

  822. husbands and

  823. wives are not

  824. able to have

  825. children.

  826. And this can be

  827. particularly painful

  828. as wanting

  829. children is a

  830. deep and

  831. natural longing.

  832. So let me say

  833. to those, whatever

  834. age, we can

  835. learn from this.

  836. Or if you plan

  837. to get married in

  838. later years and

  839. have children

  840. yourself and have

  841. a family but you

  842. discover we're not

  843. able to, let me

  844. say a few things.

  845. First, it's right

  846. to grieve.

  847. Children are a

  848. blessing and not

  849. experiencing that

  850. blessing is always

  851. painful.

  852. We shouldn't feel

  853. we should ever have

  854. to hide or excuse

  855. our grief.

  856. It's right to

  857. grieve.

  858. And second, God

  859. doesn't love us

  860. less.

  861. Sometimes we think

  862. God is being mean

  863. or perhaps punishing

  864. us.

  865. No, God never

  866. withholds all that

  867. is good and best

  868. for us.

  869. God's love is not

  870. conditional on

  871. having children.

  872. And third, there

  873. are other ways

  874. people serve.

  875. Couples who

  876. can't have

  877. children often

  878. may feel or

  879. other people will

  880. say, oh well

  881. they're disqualified,

  882. they can't serve

  883. in certain ways

  884. now.

  885. No, God gives

  886. us all gifts

  887. and abilities.

  888. That means we

  889. can serve in

  890. children's ministry

  891. or it may mean

  892. that we serve in

  893. other ways.

  894. We all have a

  895. purpose and a

  896. place.

  897. And lastly, God's

  898. grace is enough.

  899. On the darkest

  900. days when there

  901. are no more

  902. tears to shed,

  903. when the sense

  904. of loss and

  905. emptiness is

  906. crushing, do

  907. not fear.

  908. God walks

  909. with you.

  910. He will never

  911. leave us and

  912. his grace will

  913. always be

  914. sufficient.

  915. So, be

  916. fruitful.

  917. Second, in

  918. verse 28 he

  919. says, be

  920. fruitful, increase

  921. in number, and

  922. fill the earth.

  923. It's God's

  924. intention that the

  925. earth would be

  926. filled with his

  927. image bearers.

  928. You know, in the

  929. ancient world, and

  930. even today we see

  931. it, a king's

  932. image would be

  933. set up in

  934. different parts of

  935. his kingdom.

  936. So you can even

  937. think of a modern

  938. state like today,

  939. like North Korea.

  940. You go anywhere,

  941. and there's images

  942. and pictures and

  943. statues of the

  944. Kims, the ruling

  945. dynasty, representing

  946. the present and

  947. reminding the

  948. subjects who

  949. rule.

  950. Well, God is the

  951. true but good and

  952. kind ruler.

  953. And as the true

  954. king, he has

  955. created a kingdom.

  956. That kingdom is

  957. called the world

  958. in which we live.

  959. And God has

  960. placed his image

  961. in the world

  962. called mankind.

  963. So together, men

  964. and women are to

  965. represent God

  966. throughout the

  967. world.

  968. Here's a quote for

  969. you just to

  970. summarize it.

  971. God is the

  972. sovereign creator

  973. who extends his

  974. kingship over the

  975. world, but he

  976. extends his rule

  977. through human

  978. beings.

  979. For as God's

  980. image bearers,

  981. they must govern

  982. the world for

  983. God's glory.

  984. So whether we're

  985. at home, whether

  986. we're in school,

  987. at work, whatever

  988. we're doing socially,

  989. wherever we are,

  990. whatever is going

  991. on, we bear God's

  992. image.

  993. We are to represent

  994. and reflect God's

  995. goodness and glory

  996. everywhere we step

  997. and everywhere we

  998. speak.

  999. Fill the earth.

  1000. And again from

  1001. verse 28, be

  1002. fruitful, fill the

  1003. earth and subdue

  1004. it.

  1005. Verse 28, be

  1006. fruitful, increase

  1007. in number, fill the

  1008. earth, subdue it,

  1009. rule over the

1010. fish in the sea and

  1011. the birds in the

  1012. sky and over every

  1013. living creature that

  1014. moves on the

  1015. ground.

  1016. Humanity is to

  1017. rule the world,

  1018. but their rule is

  1019. not to be their

  1020. own rule, it's to

  1021. be a reflection of

  1022. God's good and

  1023. loving rule.

  1024. We are to live

  1025. God's way according

  1026. to his order and

  1027. design and together

  1028. we are to extend

  1029. that rule throughout

  1030. the earth.

  1031. But how do we

  1032. live out his

  1033. rule?

  1034. Well, look at

  1035. verse 28.

  1036. God blessed

  1037. them and said

  1038. to them.

  1039. Verse 29,

  1040. and God

  1041. said.

  1042. God, you see,

  1043. communicates his

  1044. rule through his

  1045. word and so we

  1046. are to extend

  1047. God's word,

  1048. rule through his

  1049. word.

  1050. As image

  1051. bearers, we

  1052. should long to

  1053. see God's word

  1054. shaping and

  1055. transforming society

  1056. and lives.

  1057. Image bearers are

  1058. to proclaim the

  1059. good and gracious

  1060. word of the king.

  1061. That's why we're

  1062. here, to spread

  1063. his word, a word

  1064. that will protect

  1065. the weak, a word

  1066. that will preserve

  1067. life, a word that

  1068. pursues justice, a

  1069. word that ultimately

  1070. proclaims a God

  1071. who is creator and

  1072. Lord over all this

  1073. universe, demanding

  1074. our loyalty and

  1075. deserving our praise.

  1076. We rule well when

  1077. we live life under

  1078. the authority of

  1079. God's word.

1080. So we are made in

  1081. his image, we are

  1082. called to live out

  1083. that image.

  1084. And third, we're

  1085. restored to God's

  1086. image.

  1087. When God finished

  1088. making mankind, there

  1089. was delight, wasn't

  1090. there?

  1091. Look at verse 31.

  1092. And God saw all

  1093. that he made and

  1094. it was very good.

  1095. Everything else

  1096. we're told up to

  1097. this point that God

  1098. made was good.

  1099. But the creation of

  1100. his image bearers

  1101. was very good.

  1102. God delights and

  1103. take pleasure in

  1104. what he has done.

  1105. Imagine a world full

  1106. of his unique image

  1107. bearers.

  1108. Imagine a world with

  1109. nations filled with

  1110. people reflecting his

  1111. goodness and his

  1112. glory, all extending

  1113. the gracious rule of

  1114. the king.

  1115. Can you picture it?

  1116. God's name is a

  1117. world full of

  1118. people.

  1119. Well, we only need

  1120. to look inside our

  1121. own hearts, wander

  1122. around the city at

  1123. night, turn on the

  1124. news and we realize

  1125. that something is not

  1126. right with the

  1127. creation of mankind.

  1128. kind.

1129. You see, because of our

  1130. selfish and sinful

  1131. lives, we've rebelled

  1132. against representing

  1133. God.

  1134. Rather than reflect

  1135. God, we much prefer

  1136. to reflect our own

  1137. desires and wants.

  1138. We have no problem

  1139. projecting and reflecting

  1140. what I want and what I

  1141. want to do.

1142. and the image of God

  1143. has become distorted.

  1144. We have become broken

  1145. mirrors, each and

  1146. every one of us.

  1147. Imagine for a moment

1148. with me, looking in a

  1149. mirror, perhaps the one

  1150. you looked at this

  1151. morning.

  1152. Reflecting back at you

  1153. is that image.

1154. In fact, the image can

  1155. appear identical.

1156. Just gaze at that image

  1157. in your mind.

  1158. Now take that mirror

  1159. off the wall.

1160. And smash it to the

  1161. ground.

1162. Right in front of you,

1163. just smash it on the

  1164. floor.

  1165. Bits fly everywhere.

  1166. Chips and cracks and

  1167. sharp edges.

1168. Now just take time to

  1169. peer into that broken

  1170. mirrored glass.

1171. Look at it on the

  1172. floor.

  1173. Look into it.

1174. It's hard to make out

  1175. your face, isn't it?

  1176. Our image is distorted

1177. and twisted and out of

  1178. shape.

  1179. But that's what we've

  1180. become.

1181. We no longer reflect the

1182. purity and beauty of God

  1183. fully.

1184. It is marred and tainted

1185. by our ugly life of sin.

  1186. Instead of extending the

1187. good rule of God, we have

  1188. crushed and corrupted one

1189. another by our own words.

1190. Left to ourself, we will

1191. never be able to put it

  1192. back together.

  1193. another.

  1194. But yet change is

  1195. possible.

  1196. Transformation is

  1197. possible.

1198. We may fail, but God's

  1199. plan and design for

  1200. creation right at the

  1201. beginning of Genesis has

  1202. not failed.

1203. God in his grace has

1204. sent his son to show

1205. us what an image bearer

  1206. should be like.

  1207. Colossians chapter 1

    Colossians 1 chapter mention

1208. reminds us, I have the

  1209. quote here on the

1210. screen, the sun is the

  1211. image of the invisible

  1212. God.

1213. For God was pleased to

  1214. have all his fullness

  1215. dwell in him.

1216. When we look at the

1217. person of Jesus, we see

  1218. the full and glorious

1219. image of God, the purity

1220. and beauty of God on

  1221. display.

1222. not just a reflection of

  1223. the light, but the

  1224. pure and brilliant

  1225. light of God itself,

  1226. shining forth the

  1227. glory of God.

1228. In the sun, we have a

  1229. picture of the true

  1230. image of humanity

  1231. in perfection.

  1232. Protecting the weak,

  1233. preserving life,

  1234. pursuing justice,

  1235. proclaiming the good and

1236. gracious word of God of

  1237. sins forgiven,

  1238. and of new life.

1239. But not only does the

1240. person of Jesus show us

1241. what a true image of God

1242. should be, he restores the

1243. broken image of God in

  1244. each one of us.

  1245. This restoration is done

  1246. definitively, meaning once

  1247. and for all, and

  1248. progressively, ongoing

  1249. over time.

  1250. First, as we turn

  1251. into Jesus in repentance,

1252. and I want us to think

  1253. about how can my

  1254. broken image be

  1255. restored?

1256. How can I become more

  1257. like the image God

  1258. created me to be?

1259. Well, first we turn to

  1260. Jesus in repentance.

1261. That is, we own our sin

  1262. and we take responsibility

  1263. for who we are.

1264. And we look in faith to

  1265. him for forgiveness.

  1266. It's like Jesus has

  1267. taken our cracked and

  1268. distorted image,

1269. and he's taken it on

  1270. himself.

1271. And on the cross, he is

  1272. utterly smashed and

  1273. destroyed for us.

1274. On the cross, Jesus takes

1275. our image and he is

  1276. judged and condemned

  1277. for me.

  1278. But in its place,

  1279. his pure and perfect

1280. image is given to us.

1281. So when God now peers

1282. down and when he looks

1283. at us, he sees the true

1284. image of his Son in us.

1285. The very reflection of God

1286. shining the glory of God

  1287. back to himself.

  1288. Get your minds around

  1289. that.

  1290. Picture God.

1291. If you are in Christ

  1292. today, looking at you,

1293. the very glory of God

  1294. shines back at him

  1295. because Christ's image

  1296. is in you.

  1297. The image of God

  1298. restored definitively

  1299. once and for all

1300. as we trust in Christ.

  1301. But second, the image

  1302. is restored progressively,

  1303. isn't it, over time.

1304. As we gaze at the image

  1305. of God in Christ,

1306. so we look at his

  1307. beauty and we say,

1308. I want to be like him.

  1309. And with the Spirit's

1310. help, we begin to see

1311. the cracks in our lives

  1312. and all those chips

  1313. and all those flaws

1314. and we come to him

  1315. to be gently renewed.

  1316. Colossians reminds us

  1317. again,

1318. put on the new self

  1319. which is being renewed

  1320. in knowledge

  1321. in the image

  1322. of its creator.

  1323. Day by day,

1324. as we take the word

  1325. of God

  1326. and we look in

  1327. and we read

  1328. and see the true

  1329. image of Christ,

  1330. the beauty

  1331. of the Lord Jesus,

  1332. we see our flaws,

1333. we see how we don't

  1334. match up,

  1335. we confess our sin

  1336. and we seek

  1337. his power and help.

  1338. Please Lord,

  1339. change me,

  1340. restore me,

  1341. to become like Jesus.

  1342. Broken mirrors,

  1343. restored,

  1344. bit by bit,

  1345. his beauty and purity

  1346. being conformed

  1347. in us.

  1348. Let me give us

1349. two little things to do.

  1350. In the morning,

  1351. I hope you all

1352. get up bright and breezy

1353. and gaze at the mirror.

  1354. Don't be ashamed

  1355. of what you see

  1356. in the mirror.

  1357. Have a good look.

  1358. Every morning,

1359. I want you to look

  1360. at the mirror.

  1361. Gaze at the mirror.

  1362. And as you gaze,

  1363. be reminded

  1364. of who you are

  1365. in Christ,

  1366. that as you look,

  1367. think of how God

  1368. now looks at you.

  1369. He looks at you

  1370. as he does

  1371. his own son.

  1372. The image of

  1373. God himself

  1374. reflecting back

  1375. to God

  1376. in all holiness,

  1377. in all beauty.

  1378. God's love.

  1379. That's the first thing

1380. I want you to do.

  1381. The second thing,

  1382. just as you look

  1383. at the mirror

  1384. in the morning

  1385. and you see

  1386. all the cracks

  1387. and all the bits

  1388. and pieces

  1389. that are falling off

  1390. and everything else

  1391. that's going on,

1392. and you fix yourself up

  1393. and make yourself

  1394. presentable,

  1395. changing bit by bit.

1396. So we come to God

  1397. and as we look

  1398. at Christ,

  1399. we say,

  1400. I want to be,

  1401. I want to have

  1402. the beauty of Christ.

  1403. I want to shine

  1404. like him.

  1405. Lord,

  1406. by your Holy Spirit,

  1407. will you change me

  1408. today

  1409. to be like

  1410. the Lord Jesus?

  1411. His image is restored

  1412. once and for all

1413. and he is taking us

  1414. bit by bit

1415. to be more like Christ.

  1416. Let's pray.

  1417. Father,

1418. as we look at ourselves,

  1419. we can have

  1420. such a distorted view.

  1421. We can elevate ourselves

  1422. to be something

  1423. greater and bigger

  1424. than we actually are

1425. and we can look at ourselves

1426. and think less of ourselves

1427. than what we actually are.

  1428. So help us

  1429. to take our gaze

  1430. off ourself

  1431. and off the world

  1432. in comparing ourselves

  1433. to other people

  1434. and other things

1435. and would you help us

  1436. to gaze

  1437. at the beauty

  1438. of the Lord Jesus?

1439. To take up his word,

  1440. to read it

1441. and to see who he is

  1442. and to be amazed

  1443. at who we are

  1444. in Christ,

  1445. the restored image

  1446. of God.

  1447. But not only that,

  1448. Father,

  1449. would you be gracious

  1450. and change us

1451. so that we are not harsh

  1452. in our words,

1453. that we wouldn't treat others

  1454. as different

  1455. but as equal,

  1456. that we would love

  1457. each other

  1458. as you love us

  1459. and we would care

  1460. for each other

  1461. as you care

  1462. for mankind.

  1463. Father,

1464. would you do that work

  1465. in us all

1466. so that we may disperse

  1467. and reflect

  1468. the glory of God

  1469. wherever we are

  1470. tomorrow

1471. and all that we do.

  1472. We pray this

  1473. for your glory

  1474. in Jesus' name.

  1475. Amen.
