  1. Shortened, focused today. Genesis chapter 2, verses 1 to 3. Let's hear God's word.

    Genesis 2:1–3

  2. Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array.

  3. By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing, so on the seventh day he rested from all his work.

  4. Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done.

  5. Let's pray.

  6. Father, we thank you for your word for Genesis, the book of beginnings,

  7. teaching us about you, teaching us about the world in which we live,

  8. teaching us about your good order and design.

  9. And we pray that as we look at the whole theme of rest today,

  10. that you would teach us and instruct us,

  11. not only that we would understand with our minds,

  12. but that we would actually experience

  13. all that you have for us today.

  14. That it would change how we live this coming week.

  15. And it would truly give us peace

  16. as we enter into a new week.

  17. Father, help us in Jesus' name.

  18. Amen.

  19. So how are you?

  20. How are you feeling?

  21. Let me guess that a big chunk of your answer,

  22. somewhere in all your words,

  23. there will be things like

  24. busy,

  25. tired,

  26. exhausted.

  27. I mean, I could just fall asleep right now.

  28. And the sad thing is,

  29. the solution to our hectic lives

  30. is to work longer

  31. and do more.

  32. We seem to stuff more and more

  33. into our life.

  34. So we sign up our kids to more activities.

  35. We volunteer at community groups.

  36. We get involved in more ministry.

  37. We go to every family birthday and celebration.

  38. No wonder we get worn out.

  39. We're in a state of restlessness.

  40. And our desire for rest

  41. always seems to evade us.

  42. We rush to work.

  43. We run to the next appointment.

  44. We wrestle with over-commitments.

  45. We're constantly striving to keep up and fit in.

  46. frantically trying to reach our own standards

  47. while desperately trying to meet

  48. everybody else's expectations.

  49. We've become a nation of worriers,

  50. struggling with mental health,

  51. dependent on that drink

  52. to settle our worrying minds.

  53. And sadly for some,

  54. the only means of escape

  55. is to end it all.

  56. We are a restless people.

  57. But guess what?

  58. That's not how it was

  59. at the beginning.

  60. Let's look at this short text

  61. and see what we learn about rest.

  62. Four big things we're going to look at.

  63. First, work is finished.

  64. Look at verse 2.

  65. By the seventh day,

  66. God had finished the work

  67. he had been doing.

  68. If you could peer back in time

  69. before the creation of this world,

  70. nothing is there

  71. except the self-existing,

  72. self-sufficient God.

  73. And then at God's decree,

  74. something begins to happen.

  75. Creation,

  76. imagined in the mind of God,

  77. begins to unfold.

  78. The plan and design

  79. start to take shape.

  80. God's spoken word

  81. enacts it all.

  82. Forming the earth,

  83. the light and the darkness,

  84. the sea and the sky,

  85. the land and vegetation,

  86. and then with intricate precision,

  87. filling those empty voids

  88. with the sun and the moon

  89. and sea creatures

  90. and birds in the sky

  91. and animals and mankind.

  92. The master craftsman of the cosmos

  93. is at work through his word.

  94. Laws to keep the world spinning

  95. in just the right speed.

  96. Forces to keep the tides all in place.

  97. Plants providing food.

  98. Mankind ruling the earth.

  99. Creation is one big display

  100. of God's never-ending glory.

  101. God's word has done its work.

  102. As God spoke through the prophet Isaiah himself

  103. telling us what his word is like,

  104. here it is.

  105. So is my word that goes out from my mouth.

  106. It will not return to me empty,

  107. but will accomplish what I desire

  108. and achieve the purpose

  109. for which I sent it.

  110. God's perfect spoken word

  111. bringing creation

  112. to its conclusion.

  113. Can you picture God?

  114. Surveying all that he has done,

  115. towering over the universe,

  116. creation in its vast array,

  117. the infinite universe,

  118. the ocean depths,

  119. and as God stands back,

  120. he declares,

  121. it is finished.

  122. The work is done.

  123. No more forming or filling.

  124. It's complete.

  125. Everything is as it should be.

  126. No faults and no mistakes.

  127. Verse 2,

  128. By the seventh day,

  129. God had finished

  130. the work he had been doing.

  131. Now for us,

  132. seventh,

  133. this seventh day,

  134. might be just another number

  135. and another day

  136. in the sequence of the week.

  137. But in the Bible,

  138. it's full of symbolism.

  139. Seven means fullness

  140. or completeness.

  141. So when God stops his work

  142. on the seventh day,

  143. he's declaring to us

  144. that his work of creation

  145. is complete.

  146. It's perfectly finished.

  147. No more tweaking or fixing.

  148. Everything is as it should be.

  149. Now that doesn't mean

  150. that God has stopped work

  151. altogether.

  152. Scripture reminds us

  153. that God continues

  154. to sustain the world

  155. by his powerful word.

  156. God still works,

  157. but he has finished

  158. the work of creation.

  159. Everything

  160. is wonderfully complete

  161. by the seventh day.

  162. So the work is finished.

  163. Second,

  164. rest from work.

  165. Let's read verse 2.

  166. By the seventh day,

  167. God had finished

  168. the work he had been doing.

  169. So on the seventh day,

  170. he rested

  171. from all his work.

  172. When our work is done,

  173. or not done

  174. as the case is usually,

  175. usually the way,

  176. we rest,

  177. don't we?

  178. We sit down,

  179. we get a cup of tea,

  180. we relax,

  181. we rest,

  182. because we're tired,

  183. we're worn out

  184. physically,

  185. emotionally,

  186. mentally.

  187. Everything is pressing in

  188. and squeezing us

  189. to death

  190. and we just need to

  191. rest.

  192. Well,

  193. God rests too,

  194. but not because

  195. he's tired.

  196. Keep your finger

  197. in Genesis 2

  198. and jump with me

  199. to Psalm 121.

  200. Psalm 121.

  201. Psalm 121.

  202. See what it says?

  203. The first few verses,

  204. Psalm 121,

    Psalms 121:1

  205. verse 1.

  206. Speaking of our creator God,

  207. I lift up my eyes

  208. to the mountains.

  209. Where does my help

  210. come from?

  211. My help comes from the Lord,

  212. the maker of heaven and earth.

  213. He will not let your foot slip.

  214. He who watches over you

  215. will not slumber.

  216. Indeed,

  217. he who watches over Israel

  218. will neither slumber nor sleep.

  219. Back to Genesis 2.

  220. You see,

  221. our creator God

  222. does not need sleep.

  223. He doesn't get tired

  224. or worn out.

  225. So,

  226. what does it mean

  227. when we read in Genesis

  228. that God

  229. rests?

  230. Well,

  231. when the work is finished,

  232. there is nothing

  233. left to do

  234. except enjoy

  235. everything that's been done.

  236. It's like

  237. cooking a meal.

  238. All the work

  239. has been done

  240. and everything's prepared

  241. and it's all cooked

  242. and it's set before you.

  243. You rest

  244. and you just enjoy

  245. what's before you.

  246. Well,

  247. God's rest

  248. is delighting

  249. in all he has made.

  250. You see,

  251. the climax of creation

  252. is not day six

  253. when God created mankind

  254. in his image.

  255. The climax of creation

  256. is day seven.

  257. He creates a day of rest.

  258. In other words,

  259. rest is the goal of creation.

  260. This is what it's all

  261. building up to.

  262. This is the crescendo.

  263. This is what it's all about.

  264. God has created us

  265. so that we might

  266. rest and enjoy it

  267. with him.

  268. Like an artist

  269. who paints a picture.

  270. When they finish painting,

  271. they put the brushes down

  272. and they sit

  273. and they just gaze

  274. in delight

  275. of what they have done.

  276. They admire the wonder

  277. and the beauty

  278. of their work.

  279. But it's not enough

  280. for the artist.

  281. The artist must take

  282. that picture

  283. and hang it

  284. in the public gallery

  285. so that others

  286. can come in

  287. and sit

  288. and enjoy

  289. their handiwork

  290. and be amazed

  291. at what is before them.

  292. And so it is

  293. with God.

  294. He wonders

  295. at the work

  296. of creation.

  297. Everything

  298. in its place.

  299. But it's not enough.

  300. God longs

  301. to share

  302. that creation

  303. with us

  304. so he

  305. makes us

  306. so that we

  307. could enjoy

  308. his works

  309. with him.

  310. He made us

  311. so that we

  312. would rest

  313. with him.

  314. In fact,

  315. it is an

  316. eternal

  317. rest.

  318. Did you notice

  319. how each day

  320. of creation

  321. ends?

  322. Look back

  323. in chapter 1,

  324. the end

  325. of verse 5.

  326. Genesis 1,

  327. the end

  328. of verse 5,

  329. and there was

  330. evening

  331. and there was

  332. morning

  333. the first

  334. day.

  335. End of

  336. verse 8,

  337. and there was

  338. morning

  339. the second

  340. evening

  341. and there was

  342. morning

  343. the second

  344. day.

  345. Verse 13,

  346. and there was

  347. evening

  348. and there was

  349. morning

  350. the third

  351. day.

  352. And on it

  353. goes for the

  354. first six

  355. days of

  356. creation.

  357. There's a

  358. beginning

  359. and there's

  360. an end.

  361. Evening

  362. and morning.

  363. Now look at

  364. the seventh

  365. day,

  366. chapter 2,

  367. verse 2.

  368. We don't

  369. have,

  370. and there was

  371. morning

  372. and there was

  373. evening

  374. on the

  375. seventh day.

  376. There is no

  377. end to

  378. the day.

  379. That's the

  380. point.

  381. It's a

  382. continuous

  383. rest.

  384. When God

  385. finished his

  386. work,

  387. it doesn't

  388. come to an

  389. end,

  390. it just

  391. goes on

  392. for an

  393. eternity.

  394. God

  395. enters into

  396. an eternal

  397. rest.

  398. All of

  399. creation

  400. fulfilling

  401. their role

  402. and purpose.

  403. Mankind

  404. living as

  405. God's image

  406. bearers,

  407. reflecting God's

  408. good and

  409. loving rule.

  410. You see,

  411. when we,

  412. his creatures,

  413. live according

  414. to God's

  415. design and

  416. order,

  417. then we

  418. find true

  419. rest.

  420. No more

  421. striving and

  422. no more

  423. frustration.

  424. Peace,

  425. harmony,

  426. and contentment

  427. with God.

  428. There is no

  429. restlessness.

  430. So the

  431. work is

  432. finished.

  433. There's rest

  434. from work.

  435. And then

  436. there's

  437. remembering

  438. the rest.

  439. Look at

  440. verse 3.

  441. Then God

  442. blessed the

  443. seventh day

  444. and made

  445. it holy

  446. because on

  447. it he

  448. rested from

  449. all the

  450. work of

  451. creating that

  452. he had

  453. done.

  454. This

  455. continuous

  456. rest that

  457. God had

  458. entered was

  459. to be

  460. remembered and

  461. celebrated by

  462. God's people.

  463. God declared

  464. it.

  465. This is to

  466. be holy.

  467. This time

  468. of rest is

  469. to be set

  470. apart,

  471. to be treated

  472. as different.

  473. It was

  474. the beginning

  475. of a

  476. covenant

  477. rest.

  478. What we

  479. see here is

  480. God entering

  481. into a

  482. relationship with

  483. his creation

  484. and blessing

  485. his creation.

  486. God and

  487. man in

  488. perfect harmony.

  489. There's no

  490. hint of

  491. opposition against

  492. God's rule,

  493. just humble

  494. submission to

  495. everything God

  496. says.

  497. Mankind

  498. enjoying God's

  499. rich provision

  500. and living to

  501. serve the

  502. glory of

  503. God.

  504. What a

  505. beautiful

  506. picture of

  507. covenant

  508. rest.

  509. There's no

  510. fighting.

  511. There's no

  512. wars.

  513. There's no

  514. news channels

  515. with the

  516. latest crime

  517. or flood.

  518. No

  519. wickedness

  520. or evil.

  521. No

  522. suffering or

  523. struggles.

  524. No

  525. frustrations

  526. or striving.

  527. It's a

  528. world that

  529. is truly

  530. blessed.

  531. Here's

  532. true

  533. happiness

  534. right here.

  535. But rest

  536. we do

  537. not have,

  538. do we?

  539. The eternal

  540. rest designed

  541. by God

  542. was broken

  543. as mankind

  544. rebelled

  545. against his

  546. rule.

  547. The light

  548. and the

  549. order of

  550. creation

  551. turned into

  552. darkness

  553. and disorder

  554. and chaos.

  555. The covenant

  556. broken,

  557. the relationship

  558. damaged.

  559. They had

  560. fallen for the

  561. lie as we'll

  562. look at in

  563. chapter 3.

  564. Living for the

  565. lie that you

  566. will find a

  567. great arrest.

  568. Be your own

  569. God.

  570. You can do it.

  571. rest.

  572. It brought

  573. restlessness.

  574. But God's

  575. plan for

  576. creation was

  577. never derailed

  578. because God

  579. sought to

  580. rescue and

  581. redeem

  582. mankind

  583. from the

  584. misery and

  585. suffering

  586. so that we

  587. could be

  588. at rest.

  589. In fact,

  590. God gave

  591. us laws,

  592. gave his

  593. people laws

  594. to remember

  595. the rest

  596. that we

  597. were intended

  598. to enjoy.

  599. have a look

  600. with me

  601. please in

  602. Exodus

    Exodus 20 chapter mention

  603. chapter 20.

  604. Here we

  605. see God's

  606. laws given

  607. through Moses

  608. to the

  609. people so

  610. that they

  611. would know

  612. the rest

  613. that God

  614. had come

  615. to give.

  616. Exodus

    Exodus 20 chapter mention

  617. chapter 20

  618. which are

  619. the Ten

  620. Commandments

  621. and we'll

  622. pick it up

  623. in verse 8.

  624. So at

  625. this stage

  626. in the

  627. Bible story

  628. the rest

  629. has been

  630. lost.

  631. God brings

  632. his good

  633. laws,

  634. his good

  635. rules to

  636. remind the

  637. people of

  638. where they

  639. can find

  640. rest.

  641. And this

  642. is what God

  643. says in

  644. verse 8.

  645. Remember the

  646. Sabbath day

  647. keeping it

  648. holy.

  649. Six days

  650. you shall

  651. labor and

  652. do all

  653. your work

  654. but on

  655. the seventh

  656. day

  657. is a

  658. Sabbath

  659. to the

  660. Lord your

  661. God.

  662. Sabbath

  663. simply means

  664. rest.

  665. On it

  666. you shall

  667. do no

  668. work.

  669. Neither you

  670. nor your

  671. son or

  672. daughter or

  673. your female

  674. or male

  675. or female

  676. servant

  677. nor your

  678. animals

  679. nor any

  680. foreigner

  681. residing in

  682. your towns.

  683. For in

  684. six days

  685. the Lord

  686. made the

  687. heavens and

  688. the earth

  689. the sea

  690. and all

  691. that is

  692. in them

  693. but he

  694. rested on

  695. the seventh

  696. day.

  697. Therefore

  698. the Lord

  699. blessed the

  700. Sabbath day

  701. and made

  702. it holy.

  703. There's

  704. three things

  705. that would

  706. help them

  707. to know

  708. the rest

  709. that God

  710. would give

  711. that God

  712. intended.

  713. First

  714. that they

  715. would be

  716. refreshed.

  717. People

  718. were to

  719. rest

  720. from their

  721. work.

  722. In fact

  723. everyone

  724. and everything

  725. the animals

  726. and as we

  727. dig into

  728. the laws

  729. even the

  730. land

  731. was to

  732. be

  733. rested.

  734. Have a

  735. look at

  736. Exodus

  737. 23

  738. just jump

  739. over the

  740. page.

  741. Exodus

    Exodus 23:12

  742. 23

  743. verse

  744. 12.

  745. 23

  746. verse

  747. 12.

  748. Six

  749. days

  750. do your

  751. work

  752. but on

  753. the

  754. seventh

  755. day

  756. do no

  757. work

  758. so that

  759. your

  760. ox

  761. and

  762. your

  763. donkey

  764. may

  765. rest

  766. and so

  767. that

  768. the

  769. slave

  770. born

  771. in

  772. your

  773. household

  774. and the

  775. foreigner

  776. living

  777. among

  778. you

  779. may

  780. be

  781. refreshed.

  782. God

  783. wanted to

  784. remind his

  785. people of

  786. what

  787. creation

  788. was like.

  789. To set

  790. this day

  791. aside he

  792. wanted to

  793. give them

  794. a taste

  795. of what

  796. life was

  797. like without

  798. sin and

  799. rebellion.

  800. A life

  801. of continual

  802. refreshment.

  803. Back to

  804. chapter 20.

  805. chapter 20.

  806. Lord the

  807. God

  808. God

  809. I'm your Redeemer.

  810. I alone give you the promised rest that you long for.

  811. But not only redemption,

  812. but also relationship.

  813. The day of rest was put in place to remember

  814. the covenant relationship with God.

  815. Have a look in Exodus chapter 31,

    Exodus 31 chapter mention

  816. so a few chapters on.

  817. Exodus 31, verses 16 and 17.

    Exodus 31:16

  818. Exodus 31, verse 16.

    Exodus 31:16

  819. The Israelites are to observe the Sabbath,

  820. again meaning rest,

  821. celebrating it for the generations to come

  822. as a lasting covenant.

  823. It will be a sign between me and the Israelites forever

  824. for in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth

  825. and on the seventh day he rested

  826. and was refreshed.

  827. A day to remember the relationship

  828. that they have with God.

  829. To bring them back to the creation

  830. that was enjoyed at the beginning.

  831. Man and God in perfect harmony,

  832. living under his good and gracious rule.

  833. You see, God's law isn't harsh.

  834. Can you see the heart of God

  835. for his restless, broken people?

  836. I alone can refresh you.

  837. I alone can redeem you.

  838. I alone can give you a relationship with me

  839. that will satisfy you and fulfil you.

  840. Are you hungry for that kind of rest?

  841. So how do we get to experience this rest?

  842. Are we meant to kind of dig back into Exodus

  843. and read through and follow these laws too?

  844. What if I don't have an ox or a donkey?

  845. Then what?

  846. Or what if my boss tells me I need to work?

  847. Then what?

  848. What if I have to go to Dunn's later on

  849. and work at the till?

  850. Are we meant to follow all these laws too?

  851. Well, the law functioned in two ways.

  852. First, the law reminds us

  853. of what life is meant to be like.

  854. It kind of gives us a picture,

  855. a taste of God's creation rest.

  856. God is saying,

  857. this is what it's like.

  858. But the other way the law functions is

  859. it reminds us

  860. that we can't actually keep God's law.

  861. No matter how many laws

  862. God put in place of the people,

  863. they failed to grasp

  864. and keep the rest that was on offer.

  865. In fact,

  866. there was a special time of rest.

  867. The 49th year,

  868. seven times seven.

  869. Remember that year,

  870. seven being a time of completeness

  871. and perfection?

  872. It was called the year of Jubilee.

  873. When all debts would be cancelled

  874. and lands would be handed back

  875. and people would be let go

  876. and everything would be,

  877. it was like a restart button.

  878. Everything would go back

  879. the way it was meant to be.

  880. God's good law.

  881. Do you know how many times

  882. they celebrated it?

  883. Not once.

  884. Never once do we read in the Bible

  885. God's people celebrating Jubilee

  886. because they failed to follow God's law.

  887. All God's law did was remind them

  888. that you failed again.

  889. You failed again.

  890. You cannot keep the rest.

  891. You see,

  892. the laws that God has given

  893. speak beyond ourselves

  894. to someone else.

  895. The laws are all fulfilled in...

  896. They're fulfilled in...

  897. Hello?

  898. Jesus.

  899. They're fulfilled in Jesus.

  900. Turn with me to Matthew chapter 11.

    Matthew 11 chapter mention

  901. Familiar words.

  902. Matthew chapter 11.

    Matthew 11 chapter mention

  903. And verse 28.

  904. Listen.

  905. Come to me,

  906. all you who are weary

  907. and burdened

  908. and I

  909. will give you rest.

  910. The word

  911. that spoke creation

  912. into existence,

  913. the word that enacted

  914. God's eternal rest

  915. has become the

  916. living word,

  917. the incarnate word,

  918. the word made flesh.

  919. And the word of Jesus

  920. now speaks to us

  921. who are restless.

  922. Come to me

  923. and I will give you rest.

  924. In me

  925. is where you will find rest.

  926. Of course,

  927. the rest that Jesus offers

  928. is not a perpetual holiday,

  929. but rest from living life

  930. as if we were God,

  931. as if we created the universe

  932. and we're centre of everything.

  933. It's rest from trying

  934. to meet our own standards

  935. and rest from trying

  936. to meet the expectations

  937. of others.

  938. It's rest from trying

  939. to keep up

  940. and fit in.

  941. It's rest from seeking

  942. to live life

  943. apart from God

  944. and doing things

  945. our own way.

  946. Look at verse 29.

  947. Take my yoke

  948. upon you

  949. and learn from me

  950. for I am

  951. gentle.

  952. I'm not harsh.

  953. What I say to you,

  954. what I give to you

  955. is not harsh.

  956. I'm humble

  957. in heart.

  958. That is,

  959. he's lowly.

  960. He's down at our level.

  961. He's accessible.

  962. It sounds a contradiction,

  963. isn't it?

  964. Take my yoke

  965. upon you.

  966. A yoke

  967. was a big

  968. wooden

  969. heavy beam

  970. that went from one ox

  971. to the other ox.

  972. It was a weight.

  973. And now Jesus

  974. is saying,

  975. take my yoke

  976. upon you.

  977. But here's the thing.

  978. What does he say?

  979. Verse 30,

  980. my yoke is

  981. easy

  982. and my burden

  983. is light.

  984. My yoke

  985. is full of kindness

  986. and full of grace.

  987. It is not harsh.

  988. It's not overbearing.

  989. Jesus is saying,

  990. submit to me.

  991. Surrender your life

  992. to me.

  993. Come under

  994. my yoke.

  995. It's really

  996. a non-yoke.

  997. It's a non-weight.

  998. Submit to me.

  999. Live your life

  1000. under me.

  1001. Walk with me.

  1002. Listen to me

  1003. and you will find

  1004. rest from

  1005. all your restlessness.

  1006. Do you know

  1007. what qualifies you

  1008. to experience

  1009. this rest?

  1010. Do you see it

  1011. in verse 28?

  1012. Jesus doesn't say,

  1013. when you've managed

  1014. to get rid of

  1015. all that burden

  1016. you're carrying,

  1017. when you've managed

  1018. to stop having

  1019. such a wearisome life,

1020. when you've sorted it out

  1021. and got your life

  1022. in order,

  1023. come to me

1024. and I'll give you rest.

  1025. No,

  1026. pay attention.

  1027. Come to me,

  1028. all who are weary

  1029. and are burdened

  1030. and can't keep up

  1031. with this rat race

  1032. of life

1033. and all that's going on

  1034. and the pressures

  1035. and the burdens.

  1036. Come to me

  1037. just as you are.

  1038. no hiding

  1039. and I

  1040. will give you rest.

  1041. Jesus makes it

  1042. crystal clear,

  1043. chapter 12,

  1044. verse 8,

1045. just a few verses on.

  1046. He declares,

1047. for the Son of Man

  1048. is Lord

  1049. of the Sabbath,

  1050. ruler

  1051. of the rest.

  1052. I own

  1053. rest

  1054. and I

  1055. give

  1056. rest.

  1057. rest.

  1058. I am the one

  1059. who will

  1060. refresh you.

  1061. I am the one

  1062. who will

  1063. redeem you.

  1064. I am the one

  1065. who can restore

  1066. your relationship

  1067. with God.

  1068. Apart from me,

  1069. there is no rest.

  1070. How could Jesus

  1071. say this?

  1072. Well,

  1073. the answer

  1074. comes

  1075. from the

  1076. final cry

  1077. of Jesus

  1078. from the

  1079. cross.

  1080. One last

  1081. reference

  1082. for us

  1083. to look at.

  1084. John,

    John 19 chapter mention

  1085. chapter 19.

  1086. John's gospel,

  1087. chapter 19.

  1088. John's gospel,

  1089. chapter 19,

  1090. verse 28.

  1091. John's gospel,

  1092. chapter 19,

  1093. verse 28.

1094. Jesus is on the cross.

1095. He's coming to the end

  1096. of his life.

  1097. Verse 28,

  1098. later knowing that

  1099. everything

  1100. had now been

  1101. finished.

  1102. All his obedient life,

  1103. all the work

  1104. the father

  1105. gave the son

  1106. to do

  1107. is finished.

  1108. And so that

  1109. scripture would be

  1110. fulfilled,

  1111. Jesus said,

  1112. I am thirsty.

  1113. Verse 30.

  1114. When he had received

  1115. the drink,

  1116. Jesus said,

  1117. it is

  1118. finished.

  1119. finished.

  1120. With that,

  1121. he bowed his head

  1122. and gave up

  1123. his spirit.

  1124. What's

  1125. finished?

  1126. The work of

  1127. redemption

  1128. is finished.

  1129. The God

  1130. who finished

  1131. the work

  1132. of creation,

  1133. the God

  1134. who brought

  1135. his creative

  1136. work to

  1137. completion

  1138. so that

  1139. there was

  1140. nothing left

  1141. to do

  1142. except to

  1143. enjoy it,

  1144. is the same

  1145. God who cries

  1146. to us

  1147. from the

  1148. cross.

  1149. I have

  1150. completed it.

  1151. I finished

  1152. the work

  1153. of salvation

  1154. for you.

  1155. Rest.

  1156. Rest.

  1157. I've carried

  1158. the weight

  1159. of sin

  1160. and guilt

  1161. for you.

  1162. I lift

  1163. the load

  1164. of worry

  1165. of your

  1166. constant

  1167. failing

  1168. and falling.

  1169. I've

  1170. taken

  1171. your

  1172. restless

  1173. sinful

  1174. life

  1175. and I

  1176. give you

  1177. rest.

  1178. My work

  1179. is finished.

  1180. Enjoy

  1181. it.

  1182. Now

  1183. and forever

  1184. more.

  1185. Let's pray.

  1186. Let's pray.

  1187. Father, we

  1188. are amazed

  1189. to hear

  1190. afresh

  1191. your word.

  1192. That word

  1193. spoken at the

  1194. beginning of

  1195. time

  1196. to bring

  1197. this world

  1198. into existence,

  1199. to bring it

  1200. to a state

  1201. of perfection

  1202. and completion.

  1203. And that

  1204. same word

  1205. speaking to us

  1206. today into

  1207. the darkness

  1208. and chaos

  1209. and disorder

  1210. of our

  1211. own life.

  1212. It is

  1213. finished.

  1214. Come to

  1215. me,

  1216. all you

  1217. who are

  1218. wearied and

  1219. burdened,

  1220. and I

  1221. will give

  1222. you rest.

  1223. Confess

  1224. your sin.

  1225. Let it

  1226. all out

  1227. before him.

  1228. Cast

  1229. all your

  1230. anxiety

  1231. on him.

  1232. Give it

  1233. to the

  1234. creator

  1235. and sustainer

  1236. of the

  1237. universe

  1238. who has

  1239. your life

  1240. in your

  1241. hands

  1242. the very

  1243. day you

  1244. were born

  1245. and the

  1246. very second

  1247. you will

  1248. die.

  1249. Submit

  1250. to him,

  1251. surrender

  1252. to him,

  1253. walk with

  1254. him,

  1255. live under

  1256. his word,

  1257. and no

  1258. rest

  1259. today.

  1260. Thank you,

  1261. Father.

  1262. Amen.

  1263. We're

  1264. going to

  1265. sing.
