  1. helps you. We're going to read Genesis chapter 2 verses 18 through to 25.

    Genesis 2:18

  2. The Lord God said, it is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.

  3. Now the Lord God had formed out of the ground all the wild animals and all the birds in the sky.

  4. He brought them to the man to see what he would name them. And whatever the man called each living

  5. creature, that was its name. So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds in the sky, and all

  6. the wild animals. But for Adam, no suitable helper was found. So the Lord God caused the man to fall

  7. into a deep sleep. And while he was sleeping, he took one of the man's ribs, then closed up the place

  8. with flesh. Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought

  9. her to the man. The man said, this is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh. She shall be called

  10. woman, for she was taken out of man. That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united

  11. to his wife, and they become one flesh. Adam and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame.

  12. So let's pray. Father, thank you that we are not left to figure out your design and your plan for life.

  13. And so we pray that as we read your word, these foundations, these beginnings of what it is to be a

  14. man, what it is to be a woman, that you would instruct us and help us to see our purpose as a man and as a woman

  15. today in this world, in our home, in our workplace. Teach us and instruct us. And we pray, Father,

  16. that what we learn today would enable us to live for your glory, so that your glory is spread,

  17. not just through Karagoline, but throughout this earth. Teach us, Father, we pray. Amen.

  18. Well, it's a wonderful picture, isn't it, Genesis chapter 2. God and man dwelling together in the garden,

    Genesis 2 chapter mention

  19. enjoying the beauty of God's creation and delighting in their fellowship with one another. But there's no

  20. lounging by the pool here, because there's great work to be done. The borders are to be expanded,

  21. because it's God's desire that the whole earth be his dwelling place. Look back with me to chapter 2,

  22. verse 15. We saw this last week. The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden in Eden to work it

  23. and to take care of it. We saw there that the garden was like a temple, a dwelling place for God,

  24. a dwelling place that was to grow as man worked and cared for it. It was to expand from the garden

  25. out into Eden and from Eden to the ends of the earth, because the whole earth is to be a dwelling

  26. place for God. A place where God's place where God's place where God extends his rule and where man enjoys

  27. his relationship with God. There's work to be done in this garden to expand the borders.

  28. And our question this morning is, how will this work get done? How is it going to expand beyond the

  29. borders of the garden to Eden to the ends of the earth? Well, three things we're going to look at

  30. from this text. A suitable helper, a covenant marriage, and a greater relationship.

  31. So first, a suitable helper. Up to this point in the creation account, everything has been good.

  32. All the way through Genesis chapter 1, God declares, and it was good. But there's something that is not good.

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  33. Verse 18, the Lord God said, it is not good for the man to be alone.

  34. Now when you read that, I wonder what your thought is. Our immediate thoughts are perhaps, poor Adam.

  35. He's all on his own, isn't he? In this great big garden. He's got no friends. Maybe he would have

  36. been better called Norman. Norman no mates, nobody to talk to. He's lonely. Well, I don't think that's

  37. Adam's main concern. After all, the creator God of the universe is present with him.

  38. Let's look again at verse 18. The Lord God said, it is not good for the man to be alone.

  39. I will make a helper suitable for him. God doesn't provide a friend, first and foremost.

  40. God provides a helper. Adam isn't bored. He's working and caring for the garden. And he needs help in expanding

  41. the garden. If the whole earth is to be a dwelling place for God, he's never going to do it on his own.

  42. He needs help. And he needs a special kind of help. Look at verse 19.

  43. Now the Lord God had formed out of the ground all the wild animals and all the birds of the sky.

  44. Is he going to find help from the animals? Well, look at the end of verse 20.

  45. But for Adam, no suitable helper was found. Adam needs someone and something different to the animals,

  46. but like himself. There's work to be done. The borders need expanding. So God in his goodness provides a suitable helper.

  47. So what does this helper look like? What kind of help? Well, let's read verse 21 to 22.

  48. So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep.

  49. And while he was sleeping, he took one of the man's ribs and then closed up the place with flesh.

  50. Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib that he had taken out of the man and he brought her to the man.

  51. There's four things I want us to notice about this man-woman relationship.

  52. The worker and the helper.

  53. First, woman was made for man.

  54. Did you notice in verse 21 and 22, the woman is formed from the man out of his rib?

  55. And she is given to the man.

  56. We say, Johnny, come on. This is 2021.

  57. You can't say things like that.

  58. Woman made for man?

  59. I mean, woman is independent from man.

  60. Woman has been liberated from man.

  61. You get yourself into trouble saying things like that.

  62. Well, let me be clear.

  63. Let's see what the text is saying.

  64. Woman is given to man not for his own wants and wishes,

  65. but to serve God's purposes.

  66. Woman is to be a helper.

  67. Not a servant or a mistress or a slave.

  68. In fact, woman and man are equal in value.

  69. Being a helper doesn't diminish worth or value or dignity.

  70. Look back at chapter 1, verse 27.

  71. Where God created mankind in his own image.

  72. In the image of God he created them.

  73. Male and female he created them.

  74. You see, man and woman are both image bearers.

  75. Man can't reflect God's image on his own,

  76. and woman can't reflect God's image on her own.

  77. Together they reflect the image of God.

  78. That's what gives us value and worth.

  79. Women don't need to prove their value in physical beauty,

  80. or men don't have to prove their worth by having a successful career.

  81. Men and women are valued because we are image bearers.

  82. This is what gives us value and worth.

  83. So, made for man, equal in value.

  84. But third, we are different in our roles.

  85. Woman isn't the same as man.

  86. We're different.

  87. We're different in lots of different ways.

  88. Different physically.

  89. So, in case you didn't know,

  90. men produce 5,000 to 6,500 units of testosterone.

  91. While women produce 300 to 400 units of testosterone.

  92. That's why, typically speaking,

  93. men are stronger, bigger, and faster.

  94. We're different biologically.

  95. So, women and men have different sexual organs.

  96. One made to give, the other to receive.

  97. Our hormones, well, they affect us differently.

  98. And we're different socially as well, aren't we?

  99. Men love to talk about things and are competitive.

  100. Talk about sport, talk about machines, talk about work.

  101. They're competitive.

  102. Whereas women, well, they have the ability, don't they,

  103. to talk to each other.

  104. And they're more agreeable rather than competitive.

  105. We're not the same.

  106. This is already being reflected in creation.

  107. Think back through to Genesis 1 and 2.

  108. God has created things already in opposite pairs.

  109. Light and darkness.

  110. Land and sea.

  111. Heavens and earth.

  112. So it is with the creation of man and woman.

  113. We're different.

  114. Therefore, we have different roles.

  115. This theme is picked up for us in Corinthians.

  116. You can just have a jump forward to there.

  117. 1 Corinthians chapter 11.

    1 Corinthians 11 chapter mention

  118. 1 Corinthians 11 verses 8 and 9.

    1 Corinthians 11:8

  119. For man did not come from woman, but woman from man.

  120. Neither was man created for woman, but woman for man.

  121. Verse 11.

  122. Nevertheless, in the Lord, woman is not independent of man, nor is man independent of woman.

  123. For as woman came from man, so also man is born of woman.

  124. But everything comes from God.

  125. Let's go back to Genesis.

  126. You see, there is a difference.

  127. But with that difference comes an interdependence.

  128. We have different roles and responsibilities.

  129. That doesn't mean to say that women can only cook and men can only work in the office.

  130. The point is, we are different.

  131. And we're to celebrate our difference.

  132. We do things in a different way.

  133. Which brings us to the fourth idea.

  134. That men and women are complementary by design.

  135. God has made us to complement each other.

  136. One thinker and theologian, Andrew Wilson, explains it very simply like this.

  137. He says it's a relationship in which two people improve or emphasize each other's qualities.

  138. Very simple, but very helpful.

  139. A relationship in which two people improve or emphasize each other's qualities.

  140. Now that doesn't just apply to a marriage relationship.

  141. This applies to all men and women in all of their relationships.

  142. Whether that's at work or in their social environment.

  143. It's not competition, but cooperation.

  144. It's not independence, but interdependence.

  145. Men need women and women need men in every area of life.

  146. Now we know this is a red hot issue today in our society.

  147. Look at social media.

  148. Whether it's the gender balance in work or equal pay for sports players.

  149. Whatever the topic, whatever the issue.

  150. There ought to be no fight or battle between the sexes.

  151. No one is superior and no one is inferior.

  152. And as Christians we have an awful lot to say about this.

  153. God's design for us is different.

  154. And that difference is good.

  155. It's a difference that actually makes us a suitable fit.

  156. Together as men and women, whatever our marital status,

  157. we are workers and we are helpers.

  158. Complimenting one another to serve God's greater and grander purposes.

  159. That together we would expand the borders.

  160. We would live life as God intends.

  161. So that the whole earth becomes a dwelling place for him.

  162. Where his glory is declared.

  163. Where his reign is expanded.

  164. And we can enjoy a relationship with him.

  165. So, the work, how is it going to be done?

  166. Well, God's provided a suitable helper.

  167. Second, a covenant marriage.

  168. Just a sec while I get a drink.

  169. So, a covenant marriage.

  170. God's design for men and women is to complement each other.

  171. And for most of us, that's going to lead into a marriage relationship.

  172. What develops in the garden is a covenant marriage.

  173. Look at verse 23.

  174. This is man at his best when it comes to poetry.

  175. This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh.

  176. And she shall be called woman.

  177. For she was taken out of man.

  178. This isn't boring.

  179. This is a declaration of delight and wonder.

  180. Maybe if you're a woman sitting there, you're thinking,

  181. well, that's not how I'd like to be described.

  182. But this was the best Adam could do.

  183. A declaration of delight and wonder.

  184. Yes, God has provided a suitable helper.

  185. But God has provided an intimate helper.

  186. Christopher Ash, who's written a great book on marriage,

  187. captures it well with this.

  188. For this is delight with a shared purpose.

  189. Intimacy with a common goal.

  190. Companionship in a task that stretches beyond the boundaries of the couple themselves.

  191. As we rejoice with the lovers in the garden,

  192. we must not forget that there is work to be done.

  193. The borders need expanding.

  194. If the world is to be God's dwelling,

  195. where his rule extends and where people live for his glory,

  196. then there needs to be a companionship of working together.

  197. You see, the primary purpose of marriage is not to meet my sexual or social needs.

  198. The primary purpose of marriage is to serve the grand purpose of God.

  199. Look back at 1, verse 28.

  200. 1, verse 28.

  201. Here's God's purpose for marriage.

  202. God blessed them, that's the man and the woman,

  203. and said to them,

  204. Be fruitful and increase in number.

  205. Make babies.

  206. Grow the family.

  207. You see, the job is so great

  208. that it's going to take more than just one man and one woman.

  209. It's going to need a whole family.

  210. That's the purpose of marriage.

  211. Mum and dad raising children in the ways of God

  212. so that their children will in turn grow up

  213. to serve the purposes of God.

  214. Families, all families who are gathered here today,

  215. that's your purpose.

  216. You are a team of workers and helpers

  217. serving God so that others will come to serve God.

  218. and enjoy a relationship with him.

  219. Contrary to what many people say,

  220. children are not a burden or an inconvenience.

  221. They are not a mistake that ruins your lovely figure

  222. or interferes with your career move.

  223. Children are,

  224. verse 28, chapter 1, verse 28,

  225. a blessing.

  226. God blessed them.

  227. They are vital members of the husband and wife team.

  228. The teaching of scripture is this,

  229. don't delay in having children,

  230. but make children, if you're married,

  231. your priority.

  232. Now, as we talked recently,

  233. some will not be able to have children

  234. and that's always sad and painful.

  235. It's very hard.

  236. But that doesn't mean to say you've lost your purpose.

  237. No, a husband and wife will go on serving God's purposes

  238. in a very fulfilling way,

  239. but in a different way.

  240. Now, if God's plan and design for marriage

  241. is to meet God's purpose,

  242. we need to follow his design.

  243. Look at verse 24 and 25.

  244. That is why a man leaves his father and mother

  245. and is united to his wife

  246. and they become one flesh.

  247. Adam and his wife were both naked

  248. and they felt no shame.

  249. Three things just to look at from this

  250. to understand the design of marriage.

  251. First, it's to be an exclusive union.

  252. Marriage is between one man

  253. and one woman.

  254. That's what it says there in verse 24.

  255. Therefore, the man leaves his father,

  256. who is a male,

  257. and mother, who is a female,

  258. and unites to his wife.

  259. There's a leaving

  260. and there's a cleaving.

  261. Now, this is really important for us to grasp.

  262. It's about leaving home

  263. and setting up your own home.

  264. Husbands and wives

  265. are to begin to make their own decisions

  266. and to make their own way in life.

  267. Running back to mummy and daddy

  268. all the time

  269. is only going to hinder

  270. and break the marriage.

  271. And husbands,

  272. you have a particular role

  273. in guarding and protecting the marriage.

  274. Just as Adam,

  275. as we'll see next week in chapter 3,

  276. was held responsible,

  277. so husbands,

  278. you're responsible

  279. for your marriage,

  280. for your family.

  281. That's what God has given you

  282. that role to do.

  283. You're responsible for it.

  284. Wives,

  285. you have a particular role

  286. in supporting

  287. and helping your husband

  288. in that role.

  289. To help him

  290. and enable him

  291. to take responsibility.

  292. That's God's design.

  293. And if you are parents here today

  294. of married children,

  295. you also have a very important role

  296. to your married children.

  297. don't interfere.

  298. Don't interfere.

  299. Don't smother them.

  300. But support them

  301. to live out

  302. their roles

  303. that God has given them.

  304. So marriage

  305. is to be an exclusive union.

  306. And it's to be

  307. a lifelong covenant.

  308. You may remember

  309. in Matthew chapter 19

    Matthew 19 chapter mention

  310. and I think it's Mark 10,

  311. when Jesus was asked

  312. about divorce.

  313. If it was permitted,

  314. could a man

  315. leave his wife?

  316. That's the question

  317. the Pharisees

  318. are asking Jesus.

  319. And Jesus answered

  320. that question

  321. by quoting

  322. chapter 2,

  323. verse 24 of Genesis.

  324. He says,

  325. that is why

  326. a man leaves

  327. his father and mother

  328. and is united

  329. to his wife

  330. and they become

  331. one flesh.

  332. And then Jesus

  333. added these words.

  334. What God has joined together,

  335. let no one separate.

  336. In other words,

  337. marriage

  338. is intended

  339. to be a permanent,

  340. lifelong commitment.

  341. It's a covenant relationship.

  342. A relationship

  343. in which people

  344. are committed

  345. to fulfill the promises

  346. as long as you shall live.

  347. Of course,

  348. marriage is hard.

  349. You'll know that

  350. if you're married.

  351. It's not easy.

  352. It does take work

  353. and effort.

  354. That's why we need

  355. to support

  356. and encourage

  357. those who are married.

  358. If you're here

  359. and you're thinking,

  360. well, I'm not married,

  361. this doesn't apply to me.

  362. It does.

  363. You are to support

  364. and encourage

  365. those who are married.

  366. And it's not wrong

  367. if we're married

  368. to need help

  369. or receive help.

  370. Sometimes marriages

  371. need outside intervention

  372. and counsel.

  373. There's many times

  374. Kirsty and I,

  375. individually and together,

  376. have spoken to friends

  377. and say,

  378. you know what?

  379. I'm finding it

  380. really difficult.

  381. It's okay

  382. to ask for help

  383. and to need help.

  384. We need to nurture

  385. and grow our marriages.

  386. We need to invest

  387. in our marriage

  388. for the very purpose

  389. so that we can serve

  390. the purposes of God well.

  391. If I can use Kirsty and I

  392. again as an example,

  393. when we're at loggerheads

  394. with each other,

  395. if we're not getting on well,

  396. we don't serve

  397. the purposes of God well.

  398. It doesn't function.

  399. It doesn't work.

  400. So if you're here today

  401. and you're struggling

  402. in your marriage,

  403. it's okay.

  404. People are there to help.

  405. Come and speak.

  406. Come and talk to me.

  407. We'll find you the support

  408. and the help

  409. that you need.

  410. Don't wait.

  411. Do it today.

  412. So marriage is to be lifelong.

  413. But what about this issue

  414. of if my spouse

  415. is unfaithful?

  416. What if I find myself

  417. in an abusive relationship?

  418. Am I meant to just

  419. shut up and put up?

  420. I mean,

  421. that's what they did

  422. in the old days,

  423. isn't it?

  424. Just shut up and put up?

  425. Absolutely not.

  426. Scripture is not silent

  427. on these matters.

  428. Scriptures have things

  429. to teach us.

  430. Let me say three things

  431. in relation to that.

  432. First,

  433. if ever you find yourself

  434. in such a situation

  435. where there's unfaithfulness

  436. or abusiveness,

  437. reach out

  438. and ask for help.

  439. Don't wait.

  440. Go talk to someone.

  441. No one in any marriage

  442. should have to live

  443. with that.

  444. Yes,

  445. we have social services,

  446. but I think the church

  447. has a particular role

  448. in supporting people,

  449. caring for them

  450. and providing for them.

  451. And I want to say

  452. that as a church,

  453. that is what we will do

  454. for you.

  455. We will provide

  456. the care and support

  457. that is necessary

  458. in such a situation.

  459. The second thing,

  460. that if the marriage

  461. is in difficulty,

  462. the aim is always,

  463. this is where Scripture

  464. points to,

  465. it is always

  466. transformation

  467. and restoration.

  468. With God's grace

  469. and with the right

  470. pastoral support,

  471. people can change.

  472. That's what God does.

  473. He transforms us.

  474. Even Christians

  475. who do awful

  476. and terrible things,

  477. people can change

  478. and people can forgive.

  479. The aim is always

  480. to reconcile

  481. what is broken.

  482. Always.

  483. That's always

  484. the first aim.

  485. Third,

  486. if reconciliation

  487. can't be achieved,

  488. if someone walks

  489. out in the marriage

  490. and doesn't want

  491. to come back,

  492. if someone doesn't

  493. want to own up

  494. or be repentant

  495. for their sin,

  496. well then maybe

  497. divorce is necessary.

  498. But only in

  499. certain situations.

  500. You can talk to me

  501. a bit more about this.

  502. We don't have time

  503. to go into all

  504. the exegesis of it

  505. just to say that

  506. Matthew 19,

    Matthew 19:9

  507. verse 9,

  508. 1 Corinthians 7,

    1 Corinthians 7:15

  509. verse 15,

  510. I think give us

  511. the foundation

  512. and the principles

  513. for decisions

  514. that we make

  515. around this.

  516. Let me give four

  517. where it may be

  518. necessary.

  519. Unfaithfulness,

  520. Jesus spoke about

  521. that in Matthew 19.

  522. ongoing affairs,

  523. sexual immorality.

  524. That could be a reason.

  525. Desertion

  526. or abandonment

  527. which comes up

  528. in 1 Corinthians,

  529. whether that's

  530. physical

  531. or economical,

  532. leaving the home

  533. or not providing

  534. in the way

  535. that should be done.

  536. and I think

  537. from this

  538. comes principles

  539. for areas

  540. of abuse,

  541. whether that's

  542. sexual,

  543. emotional

  544. or physical.

  545. Perhaps there's

  546. threat within the home.

  547. Maybe children

  548. are in danger.

  549. in all of these

  550. situations,

  551. it may be

  552. necessary,

  553. certainly

  554. separation,

  555. but it may be

  556. divorce is required.

  557. Of course,

  558. it's not always

  559. right to divorce

  560. and there may be

  561. decisions that we

  562. need to make

  563. about that

  564. and again,

  565. I would encourage

  566. that that should be

  567. done with the

  568. counsel

  569. of the right

  570. of the elders

  571. and the pastors

  572. to help work

  573. through those issues.

  574. But we must

  575. take Jesus'

  576. word seriously.

  577. What God

  578. has joined together,

  579. let no one

  580. separate.

  581. So marriage

  582. is to be

  583. a lifelong

  584. commitment.

  585. So it's

  586. an exclusive

  587. union.

  588. It's to be

  589. a lifelong

  590. covenant

  591. and within

  592. marriage,

  593. sexual

  594. intimacy.

  595. Look at

  596. verse 24.

  597. We're told

  598. they became

  599. one flesh.

  600. Again,

  601. contrary to

  602. what many

  603. people say,

  604. sex is a

  605. good gift

  606. from God

  607. and it is

  608. good.

  609. It is to

  610. be nurtured

  611. and enjoyed.

  612. Sex isn't

  613. just about

  614. having children.

  615. Within the

  616. marriage context,

  617. it deepens

  618. trust and

  619. strengthens

  620. the bonds.

  621. It's the

  622. mutual

  623. considerate

  624. act of

  625. giving

  626. and

  627. receiving.

  628. Verse 25,

  629. Adam and

  630. his wife

  631. were both

  632. naked and

  633. they felt

  634. no shame.

  635. As one

  636. writer put it,

  637. this doesn't

  638. mean to say

  639. that Adam

  640. had a great

  641. six-pack

  642. and Eve

  643. was a

  644. wonderful

  645. supermodel.

  646. No,

  647. there was

  648. just

  649. openness.

  650. There was

  651. purity

  652. in their

  653. giving and

  654. receiving.

  655. Mutual

  656. consideration.

  657. You see,

  658. marriage is

  659. good and

  660. for those

  661. who marry,

  662. it serves

  663. God's

  664. grand

  665. purposes.

  666. Of course,

  667. not everybody

  668. is going to

  669. marry.

  670. Some will

  671. remain single.

  672. And for

  673. those who

  674. are married,

  675. well,

  676. the day may

  677. come where

  678. you may find

  679. yourself single

  680. again,

  681. as our spouse

  682. dies.

  683. But being

  684. unmarried

  685. is not

  686. inferior.

  687. It doesn't

  688. mean second

  689. best.

  690. In fact,

  691. scripture tells

  692. us that we

  693. can see it

  694. as a gift.

  695. It means

  696. greater service,

  697. more freedom

  698. to serve

  699. the purposes

  700. of God.

  701. So,

  702. how will the

  703. work get

  704. done?

  705. God provides

  706. a suitable

  707. helper.

  708. He has

  709. designed

  710. covenant

  711. marriage.

  712. And then

  713. third,

  714. a greater

  715. relationship.

  716. You see,

  717. God's design

  718. for man and

  719. woman to be

  720. worker and

  721. helper is

  722. good.

  723. They complement

  724. each other.

  725. They're a

  726. suitable fit

  727. serving the

  728. purposes of

  729. God.

  730. And marriage

  731. is the same.

  732. It is God's

  733. good design.

  734. A covenant

  735. relationship

  736. between one

  737. man and

  738. one woman

  739. bound

  740. together

  741. through the

  742. sexual union.

  743. Husband and

  744. wife expanding

  745. the family

  746. to serve the

  747. purposes of

  748. God.

  749. By living

  750. out our

  751. God-given

  752. shape and

  753. pattern,

  754. so the

  755. earth becomes

  756. a dwelling

  757. place for

  758. God.

  759. His rule

  760. is extended

  761. and we

  762. enjoy a

  763. relationship

  764. with him.

  765. In fact,

  766. what we see

  767. here in

  768. Genesis 2

  769. is the

  770. greater

  771. relationship

  772. that God

  773. intends for

  774. all people.

  775. that worker-helper

  776. husband-wife

  777. relationship

  778. is a sign

  779. of what God

  780. intends for

  781. all people

  782. with himself.

  783. You see,

  784. when Paul

  785. wanted to

  786. explain what

  787. our relationship

  788. to God was

  789. like,

  790. he went all

  791. the way back

  792. to Genesis

    Genesis 2 chapter mention

  793. chapter 2,

  794. didn't he?

  795. Have a look

  796. with me at

  797. Ephesians

    Ephesians 5 chapter mention

  798. chapter 5.

  799. chapter 5

  800. verses 31

  801. to 32.

  802. 5 verses

  803. 31 to

  804. 32.

  805. So,

  806. to describe

  807. and to

  808. help us

  809. understand

  810. what a

  811. relationship

  812. with God

  813. looks like,

  814. as we say,

  815. he goes

  816. right back

  817. to creation

  818. and he

  819. picks up

  820. those very

  821. words in

  822. Genesis 2

    Genesis 2:24

  823. verse 24.

  824. Look at

  825. verse 31.

  826. For this

  827. reason,

  828. a man

  829. will leave

  830. his father

  831. and mother

  832. and be

  833. united to

  834. his wife

  835. and the

  836. two will

  837. become one

  838. flesh.

  839. This is a

  840. profound

  841. mystery.

  842. What are we

  843. talking about

  844. here?

  845. He says,

  846. I am

  847. talking about

  848. Christ

  849. and the

  850. church.

  851. You know

  852. that account

  853. in Genesis,

  854. man and

  855. woman in

  856. the garden,

  857. the worker

  858. and the

  859. helper?

  860. You know

  861. that account

  862. of Adam

  863. and Eve,

  864. husband and

  865. wife,

  866. marriage?

  867. It's

  868. actually all

  869. about Christ

  870. and his

  871. church.

  872. It's all

  873. about people

  874. and their

  875. relationship

  876. with him.

  877. It's all

  878. about a

  879. covenant

  880. relationship

  881. we can

  882. have with

  883. God.

  884. Just think

  885. about that

  886. with me

  887. for a second.

  888. Just think

  889. about what

  890. Christ has

  891. done for

  892. us.

  893. Think about

  894. his

  895. submission.

  896. Christ came,

  897. didn't he,

  898. in humble

  899. submission to

  900. his father.

  901. There's no

  902. battle going

  903. on.

  904. My food,

  905. says Jesus,

  906. is to do

  907. the will of

  908. him who sent

  909. me and to

  910. finish his

  911. work.

  912. The work

  913. that Christ

  914. had been

  915. given was

  916. to be

  917. finished with

  918. his work

  919. on the

  920. cross.

  921. And so

  922. even when

  923. he was

  924. faced with

  925. his impending

  926. death,

  927. what did

  928. he pray in

  929. the garden?

  930. Your will

  931. be done,

  932. not my

  933. will.

  934. Christ

  935. lived his

  936. life in

  937. perfect

  938. submission,

  939. doing the

  940. father's

  941. work,

  942. serving the

  943. father's

  944. purposes.

  945. others.

  946. No fight

  947. for

  948. independence,

  949. cooperation

  950. through his

  951. submission.

  952. But also

  953. think about

  954. his

  955. sacrifice.

  956. Because

  957. Christ's

  958. submission

  959. would lead

  960. to the

  961. ultimate

  962. sacrifice,

  963. him giving

  964. his life

  965. for us.

  966. He submitted

  967. himself to

  968. death on

  969. the cross,

  970. to take

  971. the blame

  972. for all of

  973. our sin,

  974. for all

  975. the wrong

  976. ways you

  977. and I

  978. have treated

  979. women and

  980. the way we

  981. have treated

  982. men,

  983. not according

  984. to God's

  985. design.

  986. We've all

  987. failed,

  988. whether we're

  989. single or

  990. whether we're

  991. married,

  992. we haven't

  993. treated our

  994. wives as we

  995. should,

  996. and wives

  997. we haven't

  998. treated our

  999. husbands as

  1000. we should.

  1001. And yet

  1002. Christ sacrifices

  1003. his life for

  1004. us,

  1005. so that we

  1006. could be

  1007. forgiven for

  1008. all our

  1009. mess and

  1010. all our

  1011. brokenness,

  1012. so that we

  1013. could have a

  1014. right relationship

  1015. with him and

  1016. restore our

  1017. relationships with

  1018. each other.

  1019. Now the

  1020. story of

  1021. Christ,

  1022. his submission

  1023. and his

  1024. sacrifice is

  1025. displayed through

  1026. the marriage of

  1027. man and

  1028. woman.

  1029. Just as we

  1030. reflect man

  1031. and woman,

  1032. just as we

  1033. reflect the

  1034. image of

  1035. God,

  1036. so marriage

  1037. is to

  1038. reflect the

  1039. work of

  1040. Christ.

  1041. You want to

  1042. know what the

  1043. gospel looks

  1044. like?

  1045. Look at

  1046. marriage.

  1047. Look how

  1048. Paul connects

  1049. our different

  1050. roles in

  1051. marriage with

  1052. the work of

  1053. Christ.

  1054. Verse 24,

  1055. Ephesians 5,

    Ephesians 5:24

  1056. verse 24.

  1057. Now as the

  1058. church submits

  1059. to Christ,

  1060. and I think

  1061. there's a

  1062. pattern here,

  1063. the church

  1064. submits to

  1065. Christ just

  1066. as Christ

  1067. submitted

  1068. himself to

  1069. the Father.

  1070. As the

  1071. church submits

  1072. to Christ,

  1073. so also wives

  1074. should submit to

  1075. their husbands

  1076. in everything.

  1077. Husbands,

  1078. love your

  1079. wives just

  1080. as Christ

  1081. loved the

  1082. church and

  1083. gave himself

  1084. up for

  1085. her.

  1086. Do you

  1087. see how

  1088. beautiful that

  1089. design is?

  1090. It's the

  1091. same design

  1092. and pattern

  1093. that we see

  1094. in Christ

  1095. and his

  1096. relationship,

  1097. in his

  1098. submission,

  1099. and his

  1100. sacrifice.

  1101. Our

  1102. complementary

  1103. roles are

  1104. a suitable

  1105. fit, not

  1106. to serve our

  1107. own wants

  1108. and wishes,

  1109. but to serve

  1110. the purposes

  1111. of God,

  1112. to display the

  1113. greatness and

  1114. glory of

  1115. Christ.

  1116. Marriage is

  1117. not competition,

  1118. but cooperation.

  1119. It's not a

  1120. fight for

  1121. independence,

  1122. but faithful

  1123. interdependence.

  1124. As we all,

  1125. each of us,

  1126. submit to

  1127. God's shape

  1128. and pattern

  1129. for marriage,

  1130. so the

  1131. purposes of

  1132. God are

  1133. fulfilled.

  1134. His rule

  1135. is extended

  1136. and his

  1137. relationship

  1138. is enjoyed.

  1139. When it

  1140. comes to

  1141. man and

  1142. woman,

  1143. when it

  1144. comes to

  1145. husband and

  1146. wife,

  1147. God is

  1148. the creator

  1149. and designer.

  1150. He knows

  1151. what he's

  1152. talking about

  1153. and we

  1154. will do

  1155. best when

  1156. we follow

  1157. his design.

  1158. Let's

  1159. pray.

  1160. Amen.

  1161. Amen.

  1162. Amen.

  1163. Amen.

  1164. Amen.

  1165. Amen.

  1166. Amen.

  1167. Amen.

  1168. Amen.

  1169. Amen.

  1170. Amen.

  1171. Amen.

  1172. Amen.

  1173. Amen.

  1174. Amen.

  1175. Amen.

  1176. Amen.

  1177. Amen.

  1178. Amen.

  1179. Amen.

  1180. Amen.

  1181. Father, we

  1182. can only

  1183. stand back

  1184. in awe

  1185. and amazement

  1186. at something

  1187. that is

  1188. taken for

  1189. granted

  1190. so often

  1191. every single

  1192. day,

  1193. to look at

  1194. a man,

  1195. to look at

  1196. a woman,

  1197. to see

  1198. their unique

  1199. differences,

  1200. equally

  1201. image-bearers,

  1202. but all

  1203. part of

  1204. your beautiful

  1205. and good

  1206. design.

  1207. We confess,

  1208. Father,

  1209. that we

  1210. have not

  1211. treated

  1212. woman and

  1213. man as

  1214. we should

  1215. and we

  1216. have not

  1217. lived in

  1218. marriage as

  1219. we should.

  1220. Amen.

  1221. Amen.

  1222. Amen.

  1223. Amen.

  1224. Amen.

  1225. Amen.

  1226. Amen.

  1227. Amen.

  1228. Amen.

  1229. Amen.

  1230. Amen.

  1231. Amen.

  1232. Amen.

  1233. Amen.

  1234. Father,

  1235. would you

  1236. forgive us

1237. for the things we have done wrong, said wrong, thought wrong.

  1238. And not only that,

1239. but would you give us the guts and the courage

1240. to change what needs to be changed,
