  1. Thank you.

  2. Thank you.

  3. We need our text this morning, Genesis chapter 11, starting at verse 1.

    Genesis 11 chapter mention

  4. Now the whole world had one language and a common speech.

  5. As people moved eastward, they found plains in Shinar and settled there.

  6. They said to each other, come, let's make bricks and bake them thoroughly.

  7. They used brick instead of stone and bitumen for mortar.

  8. Then they said, come, let us build ourselves a city with a tower that reaches to the heavens

  9. so that we may make a name for ourselves.

  10. Otherwise, we will be scattered over the whole face of the earth.

  11. But the Lord came down to see the city and the tower that people were building.

  12. And the Lord said, if it's one people speaking the same language, they have begun to do this,

  13. then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them.

  14. Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other.

  15. So the Lord scattered them from there over all the earth and they stopped building the city.

  16. That is why it was called Babel.

  17. Because there the Lord confused the whole language of the world.

  18. From there the Lord scattered them over the face of the whole earth.

  19. Before we get stuck in, and I pray just a note in regards to the note sheet, if any of you are using that.

  20. There's maybe some still on the table as you came in if you need one.

  21. If you're confused with the title, go with the titles there.

  22. There's not too much change, but just so you don't get confused.

  23. Let's pray and ask for God's help.

  24. Father, we thank you that you have spoken to us in a language that we can understand

  25. and you have preserved your word for us, written in your word.

  26. Indeed, the nations of the world today, so many, have your word, the Bible, in a language they can understand.

  27. We thank you that you speak to us so clearly.

  28. And we pray that we would be attentive to your word today.

  29. That it would shape us and mould us.

  30. And it would cause us to see your great big purposes for the world.

  31. And how we should live in response.

  32. So be our teacher through your word today, we ask.

  33. In Jesus' name.

  34. Amen.

  35. Amen.

  36. Amen.

  37. Well, we come, don't we?

  38. And we go.

  39. We have gathered together and we are going to scatter.

  40. We have congregated and then we're going to disperse.

  41. That's what the church is all about, isn't it?

  42. Remember Jesus' words to his disciples?

  43. Jesus gathered his disciples together and then he scattered them.

  44. They came to Jesus.

  45. They came to Jesus and Jesus said to them, go and make disciples of all nations.

  46. Now, of course, that's nothing new.

  47. It was God's plan and then he was going to do.

  48. It was God's plan and purpose right from the very beginning of the story of scripture.

  49. Adam and Eve, remember, were in the garden with God.

  50. They were with him together.

  51. But Adam and Eve were to expand the borders of Eden.

  52. They were to spread out.

  53. As God's image bearers, they were to be the visible representation of the invisible God.

  54. They were to reflect God's greatness and display his goodness throughout the whole earth.

  55. And it was the same for Noah.

  56. There was an opportunity for a fresh start.

  57. Noah and his family, remember, were gathered together in the ark of salvation.

  58. And then what does God say to them?

  59. Well, have a look with me.

  60. Go back to chapter 9 and verse 1.

  61. Just turn a page back.

  62. Chapter 9, verse 1.

  63. Then God blessed Noah and his son, saying to them,

  64. Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the earth.

  65. Now look at verse 7 of chapter 9.

  66. As for you, be fruitful and increase in number.

  67. Multiply on the earth and increase upon it.

  68. As God began again the fresh start with Noah,

  69. he says to Noah,

  70. Go, scatter, disperse, fill the earth.

  71. As God's image bearers, they were to govern the world for God's glory.

  72. They were to honour God wherever they went.

  73. You see, this is God's purpose for humanity.

  74. This is why we were made.

  75. It's why we exist.

  76. We were created to display the glory of God.

  77. That we would want people to see how good and how great God is.

  78. Well, how are we getting on in that task?

  79. How well are we at declaring God's glory and making it all about him?

  80. Well, let's see how we are getting on.

  81. Let's go to chapter 11.

  82. First, building our own glory.

  83. As Noah's family grew in number, they were united in their identity.

  84. Look at verse 1.

  85. The whole world had one language and a common speech.

  86. So they were united in their identity.

  87. And they also were united in their purpose.

  88. Verse 2.

  89. As people moved eastward, they found a plain in Shinar.

  90. That would become Babylon.

  91. And they settled there.

  92. You see, they were united in their purpose.

  93. But they were united in a purpose that conflicts with God.

  94. Do you see that at the end of verse 2?

  95. Instead of scattering, they begin to settle.

  96. Instead of building for God's glory, they start building their own glory.

  97. It seems God's plans have been replaced with their own plans.

  98. It's something that we do all the time.

  99. We see this in two ways.

  100. First, controlling our destiny.

  101. Look at verse 3.

  102. They said to each other,

  103. Come, let's make bricks and bake them thoroughly.

  104. And they used brick instead of stone and bitumen for mortar.

  105. Then they said, Come, let's build ourselves a city.

  106. So forget your mobile homes.

  107. Forget your tents.

  108. We're going to build a permanent city.

  109. A city that's going to last forever.

  110. It's durable.

  111. It's made of brick and strong bitumen.

  112. It's not going to fall.

  113. We say, Well, what's wrong with building a city?

  114. Everybody needs a home to live in.

  115. That's not such a bad thing, is it?

  116. Well, this city would not just be a place of rest.

  117. It would be a symbol of their defiance against God.

  118. Look at the beginning of verse 4.

  119. They said, Come, let's build ourselves a city.

  120. Why?

  121. Look at the end of verse 4.

  122. Otherwise, we will be scattered over the face of the whole earth.

  123. We're not going anywhere.

  124. We're staying here.

  125. God may have plans to expand and to spread out.

  126. Well, sorry.

  127. We're in control of our destiny now.

  128. We're in charge.

  129. We're not going.

  130. Seems humanity has problems accepting directions from the top.

  131. Just as Adam and Eve took things into their own hands, so we today take things into our own hands.

  132. And central to this building plan was, look at verse 4 again, was the building of a tower that would reach to the heavens.

  133. Now, these towers were very common.

  134. Archaeologists have dug them up all over the place.

  135. They're kind of pyramid in shape.

  136. So maybe you're thinking of something like the Leaning Tower of Pisa, that kind of tower.

  137. No, it was kind of more pyramid in their shape.

  138. More of a temple type structure.

  139. Because at the very top of these towers would be the home for their deity, for their gods.

  140. In other words, they're saying, we're going to make our own gods and we're going to put them away up there in the heavens, out the way.

  141. Gods who don't interfere with us.

  142. Building this tower was a statement of independence.

  143. We're in charge now.

  144. We're going to make our own rules.

  145. And we're going to live our own way.

  146. Let's come together.

  147. Don't go.

  148. But they're not just content in controlling their own destiny.

  149. They're wanting to establish a name for themselves.

  150. Again, let's read verse 4.

  151. They said, come let us build ourselves a city with a tower that reaches to the heavens so that we may make a name for ourselves.

  152. Rather than proclaim the name of God.

  153. Rather than proclaim the name of God.

  154. Rather than make the name of God famous.

  155. We want to make our own name famous.

  156. And again, through our studies in Genesis, this is nothing new either, is it?

  157. Have a look back to chapter 4 with me.

  158. Go back to chapter 4.

  159. This is the account of Cain.

  160. These are the first sons of Adam and Eve.

  161. The account of Cain who murdered his brother Abel.

  162. So chapter 4 verse 12.

  163. God's response to that murder was very clear.

  164. Verse 12.

  165. God speaks to Cain and he says,

  166. When you work the ground, it will no longer yield its crops for you.

  167. You're going to have a hard, difficult life.

  168. You will be a restless wanderer on the earth.

  169. You see, even though he had done something as awful as murder,

  170. God's plan was still that they would wander.

  171. That they would scatter, not settle.

  172. Verse 17.

  173. Cain was in no mood for taking orders.

  174. Cain made love to his wife and she became pregnant and gave birth to their son Enoch.

  175. Cain was then building a city.

  176. And he named it after his son Enoch.

  177. You see, he begins to settle down and build a city for himself.

  178. Instead of it about reflecting God's glory,

  179. it's now going to reflect his own glory.

  180. He names the city after his own son Enoch.

  181. Instead of look at what God has done,

  182. look what I have done.

  183. Instead of look how great God is,

  184. look at how great I am.

  185. Let's go back to chapter 11.

  186. You see, what happened for Cain,

  187. individually,

  188. has happened to humanity corporately.

  189. Isn't that what we say?

  190. Come on, let's make a name for ourselves.

  191. Let's build our own legacy.

  192. Let's build our own reputation.

  193. Let's display my greatness and reflect my brilliance to the world.

  194. Aren't I wonderful?

  195. Doesn't the world deserve me?

  196. Let's come together and make ourselves great.

  197. Now, a lot of time has passed since this account.

  198. And the world's population has only increased in number.

  199. And as time has gone on,

  200. we've got better at building towers and buildings and structures.

  201. But even with all the changes,

  202. not a lot has really changed.

  203. We're still building for our own glory.

  204. In defiance of our creator God,

  205. we've set about controlling our own destiny

  206. and making a name for ourselves.

  207. We've pushed God out

  208. and we've made ourselves the centre of the universe.

  209. We are the masters of our fate.

  210. We decide how we live.

  211. And don't we see that reflected in the cities of the world today?

  212. Cities are places where people now gather.

  213. The vast majority,

  214. nearly 60% of the world's population,

  215. now live in the cities.

  216. And it's only going to increase.

  217. They all gather together

  218. and the cities in some way

  219. are there to keep God out.

  220. Because the cities are where we do as we please.

  221. And great towers are built, aren't they?

  222. The towers where we go and serve the God of money.

  223. Where we go and serve our own purpose

  224. and pursue my career,

  225. what I want to do.

  226. Striving to make a name for ourselves.

  227. And who knows?

  228. It mightn't be just Donald Trump who has a tower.

  229. Maybe I could have my name in dazzling lights.

  230. Because I'm great.

  231. But it's not just the cities of the world, is it?

  232. We see it in our places that we call home.

  233. Instead of thinking beyond our four walls,

  234. we build up our four walls.

  235. We prioritize my comfort over God's glory.

  236. We replace God's honour with my security.

  237. This is my home.

  238. My career.

  239. My desire.

  240. My life.

  241. Nobody's going to tell me what to do.

  242. Nobody's going to tell me how to live.

  243. Rather than expand the kingdom of God,

  244. we've built our own little mini kingdoms.

  245. Where we live as if we're king and queen of the universe.

  246. We build for our own glory.

  247. Isn't that what we see happening?

  248. It's what happened then,

  249. and it's what's happening now.

  250. Second,

  251. they were confronted with God's glory.

  252. Humanity, the story there in chapter 11,

  253. may be all about keeping God out

  254. and living a life of independence from him.

  255. But, verse 5,

  256. the Lord came down to see the city

  257. with the tower the people were building.

  258. It's rather an amusing scene, isn't it?

  259. Here's man, just imagine there,

  260. building his cities,

  261. towering over the landscape,

  262. heaping praise on themselves.

  263. How great we are.

  264. Look how wonderful we are.

  265. Well, God in the universe

  266. looks on

  267. and has to come down

  268. to see and inspect.

  269. I mean that tiny, puny,

  270. those little ants

  271. crawling around building things.

  272. What are they doing?

  273. It's like a child with his Lego bricks,

  274. proudly and defiantly informing his father

  275. that I'm building a house to live in.

  276. It's ridiculous.

  277. It's laughable.

  278. Well, God comes, verse 6, and says,

  279. If as one people,

  280. speaking the same language,

  281. they have begun to do this,

  282. then nothing they plan to do

  283. will be impossible for them.

  284. In other words,

  285. the purpose,

  286. the collective purpose of humanity

  287. was to fill the world

  288. with their own glory.

  289. This is what man is about,

  290. to establish how great I am.

  291. And if mankind can do that together,

  292. just think if they're all together,

  293. it would defy God's purposes.

  294. And God isn't going to stand for that.

  295. God is the creator of all

  296. and the Lord of all.

  297. He will not let his glory be replaced

  298. or be pushed out

  299. by his creation.

  300. A later prophet reminds us of this.

  301. You can follow on screen.

  302. This is what God, the Lord, says,

  303. the creator of the heavens,

  304. who stretches them out,

  305. who spreads out the earth

  306. with all that springs from it,

  307. who gives breath to his people

  308. and life to all those who walk on it.

  309. I am the Lord.

  310. That is my name.

  311. I will not yield my glory to another

  312. or my praise to idols.

  313. I'm not going to give my glory up

  314. to someone else

  315. because I am God

  316. and I'm Lord.

  317. So God confronts humanity

  318. with his own glory

  319. and he does it in two ways.

  320. First,

  321. there's a judgment

  322. by confusion.

  323. Verse 7.

  324. So God comes to the people

  325. and he says,

  326. come,

  327. let us go down

  328. and confuse their language.

  329. Remember,

  330. it was one common speech,

  331. one language.

  332. Come,

  333. let us go down

  334. and confuse their language

  335. so that they will not

  336. understand each other.

  337. You see,

  338. by confusing their language,

  339. they're no longer

  340. a united force.

  341. He's breaking that up.

  342. What happens

  343. if you put an Irishman,

  344. a Chinese man

  345. and an Indian man

  346. and an Iranian man

  347. in a room together?

  348. It's not a joke,

  349. by the way.

  350. What happens

  351. when you put people

  352. of other languages together?

  353. Nothing happens

  354. except confusion

  355. and frustration

  356. because nobody understands.

  357. And God will not allow humanity

  358. to build for their own glory.

  359. So God comes in judgment

  360. and disrupts their plans

  361. and derails their purposes.

  362. But he comes

  363. not just in judgment.

  364. God also comes

  365. in mercy.

  366. A mercy

  367. by scattering.

  368. Verse 8.

  369. So the Lord

  370. scattered them

  371. from there

  372. over all the earth

  373. and they stopped

  374. building the city.

  375. You see,

  376. humanity,

  377. they weren't

  378. going to listen

  379. and obey God's word.

  380. God said,

  381. I want you to scatter,

  382. to fill the whole earth.

  383. No,

  384. we're staying here.

  385. We're doing our own thing.

  386. They wouldn't follow

  387. God's vision,

  388. his plan for the world.

  389. So God,

  390. in turn,

  391. has to scatter them himself.

  392. God disperses them

  393. and forces them

  394. to fill the whole earth.

  395. You see,

  396. it's not just a judgment,

  397. it's a mercy.

  398. God scatters humanity

  399. to stop them

  400. from uniting

  401. around self.

  402. Because when we build

  403. things around ourselves

  404. and when it's all about me

  405. and it's all about you,

  406. we destroy ourselves.

  407. So God,

  408. in his mercy,

  409. puts a halt

  410. to the self-serving,

  411. self-promoting,

  412. building projects

  413. of self-glory.

  414. That's what we see

  415. going on in chapter 10.

  416. Just flick back

  417. to the beginning

  418. of chapter 10.

  419. Chapter 10 tells us

  420. how the world is.

  421. It describes the world

  422. with all its different

  423. languages and nations

  424. and how it came about.

  425. So chapter 10 tells us,

  426. following on from Noah,

  427. verse 1,

  428. this is the account

  429. of Shem,

  430. Ham and Japheth.

  431. They were the three sons,

  432. Noah's sons,

  433. who themselves

  434. had sons

  435. after the flood.

  436. And of course,

  437. they increase in number.

  438. Verse 5,

  439. we have the sons

  440. of Japheth.

  441. They were maritime peoples.

  442. They were sailors.

  443. And they spread out

  444. into their territories

  445. by their clans

  446. within their nations,

  447. each with its own language.

  448. Then in verse 20,

  449. we have the sons of Ham

  450. and by their clans

  451. and languages

  452. in their territories

  453. and nations.

  454. And then we go down

  455. to verse 31.

  456. These are the sons

  457. of Shem

  458. by their clans

  459. and languages

  460. in their territories

  461. and nations.

  462. So do you see

  463. from Noah,

  464. the sons,

  465. they're all spreading out.

  466. These,

  467. verse 32,

  468. are the clans

  469. of Noah's sons

  470. according to their lines

  471. of descent

  472. within their nations.

  473. From these,

  474. the nations spread out

  475. over the earth

  476. after the flood.

  477. Then we come

  478. to chapter 11.

  479. But it's not chronological.

  480. Chapter 11

  481. is telling us

  482. how all these languages

  483. and nations

  484. came to be.

  485. So in chapter 11,

  486. verse 9,

  487. we read there

  488. that this is why

  489. it was called

  490. Babel.

  491. It would become

  492. called Babylon

  493. because there

  494. the Lord

  495. confused the language

  496. of the whole world

  497. and from there

  498. the Lord

  499. scattered them

  500. over the face

  501. of the whole earth.

  502. So chapter 10

  503. tells us

  504. look,

  505. look at the world,

  506. look at all the languages

  507. and all the different nations.

  508. And then chapter 11

  509. tells us

  510. this is why

  511. there are so many

  512. different languages

  513. and nations.

  514. And as we look out

  515. in the world today,

  516. don't we see

  517. many nations

  518. and many languages?

  519. Just as it was then,

  520. there's confusion

  521. and there's division

  522. amongst the nations.

  523. Turn on the news,

  524. listen to what's going on

  525. in our world.

  526. Nations are putting up

  527. barriers and borders.

  528. People groups

  529. are fighting

  530. with each other.

  531. They fear each other.

  532. Countries are now

  533. threatening war

  534. or they're either

  535. at war.

  536. The evidence

  537. is there for us

  538. all over the world.

  539. Why is it like this?

  540. Because God

  541. in his judgment

  542. brought confusion

  543. and diversity.

  544. unity.

  545. But at the same time,

  546. God is acting

  547. in mercy

  548. within the nations.

  549. Because amidst

  550. all the diversity,

  551. isn't there a desire

  552. and a longing

  553. for unity?

  554. Despite all the confusion,

  555. there's a hunger

  556. for reconciliation.

  557. the world longs

  558. for everybody

  559. to be united

  560. under a common purpose

  561. that we could all

  562. be one again

  563. and living rightly

  564. as we should.

  565. The world is crying out

  566. for a saviour.

  567. Someone who will come

  568. and rescue us

  569. from all the division

  570. and all the brokenness

  571. and put things right.

  572. You see,

  573. God in his mercy

  574. confused

  575. and dispersed

  576. the people of the world

  577. so that they would

  578. actually turn to him.

  579. God brought,

  580. if you like,

  581. a wedge of division.

  582. The different languages,

  583. the different nations,

  584. so that people

  585. would come to him

  586. and be united

  587. around him.

  588. That's what we're told

  589. in the book of Acts.

  590. Follow with me.

  591. It's almost like

  592. a commentary

  593. on these very verses.

  594. From one man

  595. he made all the nations

  596. that they should

  597. inhabit the whole earth.

  598. And he marked out

  599. their appointed times

  600. in history

  601. and the boundaries

  602. of their lands.

  603. And God did this

  604. so that they would

  605. seek him

  606. and perhaps

  607. reach out for him

  608. and find him

  609. though he is not far

  610. from any one of us.

  611. Can you see

  612. God's purpose?

  613. His purpose

  614. remains the same

  615. from the very beginning

  616. of time

  617. that the nations

  618. of this world,

  619. the languages,

  620. the people groups

  621. from all over

  622. our planet

  623. would seek him,

  624. would come to him

  625. and would live

  626. for his glory,

  627. not their own.

  628. So,

  629. we build

  630. for our own glory,

  631. we're confronted

  632. with God's glory

  633. and we are to live

  634. for God's glory.

  635. You see,

  636. despite God

  637. confronting the peoples

  638. of the earth,

  639. we still remain

  640. the stubborn

  641. bunch of people.

  642. We don't easily

  643. come to God,

  644. do we?

  645. We persist

  646. in controlling

  647. our own destiny

  648. and making

  649. our name

  650. for ourselves.

  651. What will it take

  652. to cause

  653. the nations

  654. of this world

  655. to live

  656. for his glory?

  657. What's it going

  658. to take?

  659. Well,

  660. it would take

  661. nothing less

  662. than God

  663. coming to us

  664. in person.

  665. Have a look

  666. at verse 5.

  667. There we read

  668. that the Lord

  669. came down

  670. to see the city.

  671. He intervened.

  672. It's telling us

  673. that God

  674. took action,

  675. that he intervened

  676. in what was going on

  677. because it was

  678. God's desire

  679. that people

  680. would come to him

  681. and centuries

  682. later,

  683. God would come

  684. again,

  685. but this time

  686. he would act

  687. in person.

  688. He would come

  689. to us

  690. by his Son,

  691. the Lord

  692. Jesus Christ,

  693. and through

  694. his Spirit.

  695. And he would

  696. come to restore

  697. and to put

  698. things right.

  699. Turn with me,

  700. please,

  701. to Acts

  702. in the New Testament.

  703. Acts chapter 2.

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  704. So Matthew,

  705. Mark,

  706. Luke,

  707. John,

  708. and then Acts.

  709. Acts chapter 2.

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  710. Acts chapter 2.

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  711. And in this,

  712. we're going to read

  713. through different parts

  714. of it from chapter 2.

  715. God reverses

  716. what happened

  717. at the building

  718. of the city,

  719. the building

  720. of Babel.

  721. Here God reverses,

  722. he undoes

  723. what happened.

  724. Let's take a look.

  725. Verse 4,

  726. chapter 2,

  727. verse 4.

  728. All of them,

  729. he's here talking

  730. about his disciples,

  731. followers of the

  732. Lord Jesus Christ,

  733. people who've

  734. trusted in him.

  735. It says,

  736. all of them

  737. were filled

  738. with the Holy Spirit

  739. and began to speak

  740. in other tongues.

  741. Or if you look

  742. down at the bottom

  743. of your Bible,

  744. there's maybe a little

  745. letter beside tongues

  746. and if you trace

  747. that down to the

  748. very bottom,

  749. it says languages.

  750. All of them

  751. were filled

  752. with the Holy Spirit

  753. and began to speak

  754. in other languages

  755. as the Spirit

  756. enabled them.

  757. Now,

  758. they were staying

  759. in Jerusalem,

  760. God-fearing Jews

  761. from every nation

  762. under heaven.

  763. And when they heard

  764. this sound,

  765. a crowd came together

  766. in bewilderment

  767. because each one

  768. heard their own

  769. language being spoken.

  770. amazing diversity.

  771. People from all kinds

  772. of different nations

  773. gathered together

  774. but now there's

  775. no confusion

  776. because they all

  777. hear the same thing

  778. and they all

  779. understand.

  780. But what is it

  781. they hear?

  782. What was the message?

  783. Well,

  784. look at verse 7.

  785. Utterly amazed,

  786. they asked,

  787. aren't all these

  788. who are speaking

  789. Galileans,

  790. aren't they all

  791. from the same place

  792. and speak

  793. just one language?

  794. Verse 8,

  795. then how is it

  796. that each of us

  797. hears them

  798. in our native language?

  799. End of verse 11.

  800. We hear them

  801. declaring the wonders

  802. of God

  803. in our own tongues

  804. or languages.

  805. They're hearing

  806. from the disciples

  807. the wonders

  808. of God.

  809. How God

  810. had a plan

  811. from the very

  812. beginning.

  813. His purpose

  814. and plan

  815. was that all

  816. people would be

  817. united together

  818. in Jesus

  819. and that they

  820. would declare

  821. his glory

  822. and live for him.

  823. The wonders

  824. of how God

  825. came to us

  826. in the person

  827. of Jesus

  828. to die for us

  829. in our place

  830. for building

  831. our own names

  832. and setting

  833. ourselves in

  834. defiance

  835. against God.

  836. He came

  837. to die

  838. for us

  839. and his

  840. son was

  841. raised to

  842. life for us

  843. so that we

  844. would no longer

  845. live in opposition

  846. to God

  847. but that we

  848. would now

  849. live for him

  850. and with him.

  851. They heard

  852. the wonders

  853. of God.

  854. Verse 37,

  855. chapter 2,

  856. verse 37,

  857. when the

  858. people heard

  859. this,

  860. they were

  861. cut to the

  862. heart,

  863. they were

  864. deeply challenged

  865. and convicted

  866. and they said

  867. to Peter

  868. and the other

  869. apostles,

  870. brothers,

  871. what should we

  872. do?

  873. What's our

  874. response?

  875. We want to

  876. change,

  877. we want to

  878. live differently

  879. and Peter

  880. replied,

  881. repent and

  882. be baptized

  883. every one of

  884. you in the

  885. name of

  886. Jesus Christ

  887. for the

  888. forgiveness

  889. of your

  890. sins

  891. and you

  892. will receive

  893. the gift

  894. of the

  895. Holy Spirit.

  896. Verse 41,

  897. those who

  898. accepted his

  899. message were

  900. baptized and

  901. about 3,000

  902. were added to

  903. their number

  904. that day.

  905. Can you see

  906. what's going

  907. on here?

  908. God is

  909. gathering the

  910. nations of

  911. the world

  912. around his

  913. son,

  914. the Lord

  915. Jesus Christ

  916. so that

  917. they become

  918. a new

  919. people,

  920. the church,

  921. the people

  922. of God

  923. from every

  924. tribe,

  925. language,

  926. tongue and

  927. nation all

  928. coming together

  929. around the

  930. son and

  931. as we begin

  932. to read

  933. through the

  934. rest of

  935. Acts we

  936. see them

  937. being scattered,

  938. being sent

  939. out to

  940. the nations

  941. as they

  942. are filled

  943. with the

  944. spirit of

  945. God.

  946. This is

  947. God's plan

  948. and purpose

  949. in action.

  950. this is

  951. what the

  952. church is

  953. all about.

  954. This is

  955. what we

  956. are doing

  957. here right

  958. now.

  959. Two things

  960. as we

  961. finish.

  962. First,

  963. we are

  964. gathered

  965. around

  966. Christ

  967. to see

  968. his glory.

  969. That's

  970. why we're

  971. in this

  972. building

  973. gathered here

  974. this morning

  975. to hear

  976. about Christ,

  977. to see

  978. his greatness

  979. and his

  980. goodness,

  981. to see

  982. all that

  983. the son

  984. has done

  985. for us.

  986. And in

  987. repentance,

  988. as we

  989. hear about

  990. what he's

  991. done,

  992. we align

  993. ourselves

  994. to his

  995. desires,

  996. not our

  997. own desires.

  998. Instead of

  999. trying to

  1000. control our

  1001. own destiny,

  1002. we come

  1003. and we

  1004. submit to

  1005. his commands.

  1006. Rather than

  1007. make a name

  1008. for Johnny

  1009. Grant,

  1010. we come

  1011. to live

  1012. our life

  1013. for his

  1014. glory and

  1015. to build

  1016. his kingdom.

  1017. kingdom.

  1018. We have

  1019. gathered here

  1020. today around

  1021. Christ to

  1022. see his

  1023. glory and

  1024. his greatness.

  1025. But not

  1026. only are we

  1027. gathered around

  1028. Christ, we

  1029. are now

  1030. scattered by

  1031. Christ to

  1032. declare his

  1033. glory.

  1034. We go

  1035. into all

  1036. the world

  1037. starting here

  1038. in Carigaline

  1039. and into our

  1040. families so

  1041. that others

  1042. may hear

  1043. this wonderful

  1044. news of

  1045. who Jesus

  1046. is.

  1047. To hear

  1048. about the

  1049. goodness of

  1050. God and

  1051. his saviour

  1052. Jesus Christ.

  1053. And in

  1054. faith we

  1055. obey and

  1056. are filled

  1057. with the

  1058. power of

  1059. the spirit

  1060. and we

  1061. begin to

  1062. move out.

  1063. We

  1064. prioritise

  1065. God's

  1066. glory over

  1067. our comfort.

  1068. Rather than

  1069. striving to

  1070. build our

  1071. own glory,

  1072. glory, we

  1073. go to

  1074. the nations

  1075. and declare

  1076. his glory.

  1077. We go.

  1078. So let me

  1079. ask us all,

  1080. what will it

  1081. take for us

  1082. to live for

  1083. God's glory

  1084. this week?

  1085. What will it

  1086. take for you

  1087. and for me

  1088. to live for

  1089. God's glory

  1090. this week?

  1091. What do I

  1092. need to turn

  1093. from?

  1094. What do I

  1095. need to

  1096. change in

  1097. my life,

  1098. in my

  1099. family,

  1100. so that I

  1101. am prioritising

  1102. his glory,

  1103. that I am

  1104. about making

  1105. his name

  1106. great and

  1107. not my

  1108. name?

  1109. We come

  1110. and we

  1111. go.

  1112. We congregate

  1113. and we

  1114. disperse.

  1115. We gather

  1116. and we

  1117. scatter.

  1118. The church

  1119. is God's

  1120. plan and

  1121. purpose to

  1122. unite people

  1123. around his

  1124. son and

  1125. to live

  1126. for his

  1127. glory.

  1128. Let's

  1129. pray.

  1130. Father,

  1131. we confess

  1132. that we

  1133. have so

  1134. many plans

  1135. of our

  1136. own,

  1137. things we

  1138. want to

  1139. do,

  1140. people we

  1141. want to

  1142. be,

  1143. and yet

  1144. when we

  1145. reflect on

  1146. it,

  1147. so much

  1148. of it,

  1149. has nothing

  1150. to do

  1151. with your

  1152. glory and

  1153. your honour.

  1154. So would

  1155. you help

  1156. us to

  1157. live our

  1158. life for

  1159. the glory

  1160. of God?

  1161. Help us

  1162. to use

  1163. everything we

  1164. do as we

  1165. disperse into

  1166. our families,

  1167. as we go to

  1168. our workplaces,

  1169. as we

  1170. meet up

  1171. with friends,

  1172. wherever we

  1173. are,

  1174. whatever we

  1175. do,

  1176. that in

  1177. all that

  1178. we do,

  1179. we would

  1180. go passing

  1181. on declaring

  1182. the good

  1183. news about

  1184. the Son,

  1185. the Lord

  1186. Jesus Christ,

  1187. so that

  1188. others may

  1189. know the

  1190. joy,

  1191. peace,

  1192. and love

  1193. of God

  1194. for themselves,

  1195. because this

  1196. is our

  1197. only purpose,

  1198. and the

  1199. only plan

  1200. that is

  1201. going to

  1202. last.

  1203. So fill us

  1204. with your

  1205. spirit,

  1206. help us

  1207. to go,

  1208. help us

  1209. to disperse,

  1210. help us

  1211. to scatter,

  1212. and to

  1213. live for

  1214. you,

  1215. and not

  1216. for our

  1217. own.

  1218. We pray

  1219. this in

  1220. Jesus'

  1221. name.

  1222. Amen.

  1223. Well,

  1224. to help

  1225. us and

  1226. encourage us

  1227. to do

  1228. that,

  1229. we're

  1230. going

  1231. to

  1232. sing,

  1233. and

  1234. this

  1235. song

  1236. is

  1237. all

  1238. about

  1239. going
