  1. Let's go to Matthew's Gospel, Chapter 4.

  2. Well, we're going to read Matthew, Chapter 4, up to verse 22.

    Matthew 4 chapter mention

  3. Let's hear God's Word to us today.

  4. Verse 1, then, Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted or tested

  5. by the devil. After fasting for 40 days and 40 nights, he was hungry. The tempter came to him

  6. and said, If you're the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread. And Jesus answered,

  7. It is written, Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.

  8. Then the devil took him to the holy city and set him on the highest point of the temple.

  9. If you're the Son of God, he said, throw yourself down, for it is written, He will command his

  10. angels concerning you and they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike

  11. your foot against a stone. Jesus answered him, It is also written, Do not put the Lord your

  12. God to the test. Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms

  13. of the world in their splendour. All this I will give you, he said, if you will bow down and worship me.

  14. Jesus said to him, Away from me, Satan, for it is written, Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.

  15. Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him.

  16. When Jesus heard that John had been put in prison, he withdrew to Galilee.

  17. Leaving Nazareth, he went and lived in Capernaum, which was by the lake in the area of Zebulun and

  18. Naphtali, to fulfil what was said through the prophet Isaiah. Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali, the way of the sea beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles.

  19. The people living in darkness have seen a great light. On those living in the land of the shadow of death, a light has dawned.

  20. From that time on, Jesus began to preach, Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.

  21. As Jesus was walking beside the sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew.

  22. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen.

  23. Come, follow me, Jesus said, and I will send you out to fish for people.

  24. At once they left their nets and followed him.

  25. Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James, son of Zebedee, and his brother John.

  26. They were in a boat with their father Zebedee, preparing their nets.

  27. Jesus called them.

  28. And immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.

  29. We're going to pray.

  30. I wonder if someone, I'm not sure who, would mind getting me just a glass of water.

  31. That would be helpful. Thanks very much.

  32. Thank you, Claire. Thanks.

  33. Let's pray.

  34. Let's pray.

  35. Let's pray.

  36. Encourage us and build us up.

  37. And so we pray for ourselves, for the children, for our Sunday school teachers,

  38. that we would know your word working in us, guiding us to your light.

  39. In Jesus' name. Amen.

  40. Thank you, Claire.

  41. Thank you very much.

  42. Thank you.

  43. Thank you, Claire.

  44. Well, we are in a battle.

  45. We're in a conflict.

  46. A war.

  47. It's a battle of two kingdoms.

  48. There's the kingdom of heaven, and there is the kingdom of Satan.

  49. One is a kingdom of light against a kingdom of darkness.

  50. But tragically, the story of humanity is all about how we have fallen for Satan's lives.

  51. Instead of enjoying God's kingdom, we have become enslaved in Satan's kingdom.

  52. Instead of living under God's good rule, we have followed Satan's rule.

  53. We have chosen the darkness rather than the light.

  54. And the problem is, we can't free ourselves.

  55. Well, in Matthew chapter 4, we're going to see how God's promised king, Jesus, fights this battle for us.

    Matthew 4 chapter mention

  56. Three things we're going to see.

  57. First, that Jesus confronts the devil for us and wins.

  58. Second, Jesus enters into the darkness to free us.

  59. And then third, Jesus, our commander, our warrior king, comes to us and calls us to follow him.

  60. So, let's take these in turn.

  61. First, as we think about this battle, Jesus confronts the devil for us and wins.

  62. Look at verse 1 with me of chapter 4.

  63. Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil or Satan.

  64. This isn't a chance encounter, is it?

  65. It's intentional and it's planned.

  66. You see what it says in verse 1?

  67. The Spirit leads the Son of God into a confrontation with the devil.

  68. Now, that shouldn't surprise us because this has been God's plan all along.

  69. God had promised a Son who would come and defeat the devil for us.

  70. You see, this battle has been raging since the beginning of time.

  71. It began way back in the Garden of Eden when the devil came and tempted the first man and woman to sin.

  72. And instead of saying no to sin, they believed the lie.

  73. And immediately they were plunged into a darkness and faced the penalty of death.

  74. And this has been the objective of Satan throughout history.

  75. He is leading the whole world astray.

  76. His desire is to lure and deceive, to tempt and destroy.

  77. And yet from the outset of this battle, God promised to raise up a son.

  78. Genesis reminds us of this.

  79. In Genesis 3 verse 15.

    Genesis 3:15

  80. God said to Satan, after he had deceived and led the man and woman astray,

  81. God said to him,

  82. I will put enmity between you and the woman and between your offspring and hers.

  83. He, that is one of her offspring, a son, will crush your head and you will strike his heel.

  84. A promise that one would come, a son from the woman who would crush the enemy for us,

  85. freeing us from the darkness that we might enter into the kingdom of heaven.

  86. God's word was true.

  87. And a son came.

  88. But, that son failed.

  89. Have a look at verse 1 with me again back in Matthew.

  90. Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tested or tempted by the devil.

  91. After fasting for 40 days and 40 nights, he was hungry.

  92. Does that ring any bells with you to an event back in the Old Testament?

  93. It should remind us of God's son, Israel.

  94. Because God had promised to raise up a son who would follow and who would go his way and not Satan's way.

  95. And remember how Israel were slaves in Egypt under the brutal reign of Pharaoh.

  96. And God had come and said to them,

  97. Israel is my firstborn son.

  98. Let my son go that he might worship me.

  99. And so God's son, Israel, were released.

  100. They were to go with God to worship him.

  101. And on their release, they entered the wilderness for 40 years,

  102. where they went through a time of tempting, a time of testing.

  103. But it was a test.

  104. They failed.

  105. They grumbled and they complained.

  106. They turned their back on God and longed to be back in Egypt again.

  107. They were deceived by the lies of Satan.

  108. God's son, Israel, failed to be the people God called them to be.

  109. Instead of triumphing and being victorious,

  110. they were losing the battle.

  111. And that's been the problem throughout the history of humanity.

  112. Faced with a choice of walking with God or living as our own God,

  113. we choose self over God all of the time.

  114. We've been born into sin,

  115. trapped and enslaved,

  116. and we can't free ourselves.

  117. In a sense, we are all failed sons.

  118. But true to God's word,

  119. God promised a faithful son, didn't he?

  120. And that faithful son did come.

  121. Just as Israel went into the wilderness to be tested for 40 years,

  122. so Jesus comes and he is sent into the wilderness for 40 days.

  123. And he goes through a time of testing.

  124. But unlike Israel, the unfaithful son,

  125. Jesus is the true and faithful son.

  126. Verse 3,

  127. The tempter came to him and said,

  128. If you are the son of God,

  129. tell these stones to become bread.

  130. And Jesus answered,

  131. It is written,

  132. Man shall not live by bread alone,

  133. but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.

  134. Three times the devil tempts,

  135. and each time the son remains steadfast,

  136. loyal and faithful

  137. as he enters into the battle,

  138. the confrontation.

  139. Have a look at verse 10.

  140. And as the tempting came,

  141. Jesus said to him,

  142. Verse 10,

  143. Away from me, Satan,

  144. for it is written,

  145. Worship the Lord your God

  146. and serve him only.

  147. You see,

  148. You and I go through times of testing all the time.

  149. And yet we seem to fail that test so often.

  150. We worship self.

  151. We serve my desires and my wants.

  152. But there is one who stands strong.

  153. And he passes the test.

  154. And he worships God.

  155. He never fails.

  156. For Jesus is the faithful son.

  157. Satan can't deceive him

  158. or trip him up or trick him.

  159. Satan cannot lead him astray,

  160. no matter what he throws to him.

  161. Here, Jesus,

  162. have the kingdoms of the world

  163. as if Satan could offer it to him.

  164. Already Satan had tried to destroy Jesus,

  165. didn't he?

  166. Remember when the birth of Jesus was announced?

  167. King Herod was furious.

  168. He ordered that all the boys

  169. in Bethlehem age 2 and under

  170. would be slaughtered.

  171. Yes, Herod would be responsible.

  172. But who's standing behind these evil acts?

  173. Only the desire of Satan

  174. to destroy God's king.

  175. But God's promise of a faithful son

  176. will not be broken.

  177. God's plan never fails.

  178. That means this faithful son

  179. can come and help you and me.

  180. Because we need somebody

  181. who will come in and stand for us

  182. and go where we cannot go.

  183. Because Jesus comes as our representative.

  184. He passes the test on our behalf.

  185. He doesn't fail.

  186. He confronts the devil for us

  187. and he wins.

  188. Jesus is the perfect son

  189. who is fully equipped and qualified

  190. to go into the battle for us.

  191. And that's exactly what Jesus does.

  192. So first, Jesus confronts the devil

  193. and he wins.

  194. Second, he means he can now

  195. enter into the darkness

  196. to set us free.

  197. The battle lines have been drawn.

  198. The kingdom of heaven has come

  199. through the kingdom of his son

  200. and he confronts head on

  201. the kingdom of Satan.

  202. And the battle is truly fierce.

  203. Look at verse 12.

  204. When Jesus heard that John

  205. had been put in prison,

  206. he withdrew to Galilee.

  207. Remember, we looked at John last week.

  208. He was the one, the forerunner,

  209. announcing the coming of Jesus.

  210. And what's happened to John?

  211. Well, he's now imprisoned.

  212. Satan is again at work

  213. trying to disrupt the ways of God.

  214. Verse 13.

  215. Hearing this news,

  216. Jesus left Nazareth

  217. and went and lived in Capernaum,

  218. which was by the lake

  219. in the area of Zebulun and Naphtali.

  220. So he'd gone from Jerusalem

  221. following the river Jordan north

  222. up to the lake of Galilee.

  223. Once again,

  224. Jesus' movement is intentional.

  225. He's not just escaping.

  226. There's a plan and a purpose behind it.

  227. For look what verse 14 says.

  228. He goes to Zebulun and Naphtali.

  229. Why?

  230. To fulfill what was said

  231. through the prophet Isaiah.

  232. You see, Jesus is on a mission

  233. to set us free.

  234. Jesus is going to a people

  235. who are living in darkness.

  236. Look at verse 15, the quote.

  237. This is what we learn about the people.

  238. Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali.

  239. The way of the sea beyond the Jordan.

  240. Galilee of the Gentiles.

  241. The people are living in darkness.

  242. Darkness is the Bible's way

  243. of talking about the presence of evil

  244. and our hearts of sin.

  245. And the world has seen

  246. some very, very dark days.

  247. This weekend we commemorate

  248. the Holocaust

  249. when up to 8 million human beings,

  250. people just like us,

  251. were brutally exterminated.

  252. What a terrible darkness it was.

  253. Today our nation

  254. commemorates Bloody Sunday

  255. which led to decades

  256. of violence and hatred

  257. and mindless death

  258. of over 3,000 people

  259. on our island.

  260. What a terrible darkness

  261. we have experienced

  262. in our land.

  263. And we too,

  264. each one of us,

  265. if we were to put a microphone

  266. in front of us all,

  267. we all have our own stories

  268. of darkness, don't we?

  269. Of troubled days

  270. and hard times.

  271. Things that have come

  272. into our life.

  273. But we too

  274. are not innocent.

  275. Because we too

  276. have added to the darkness

  277. by our cross words,

  278. our selfish actions

  279. and our unloving thoughts.

  280. Isaiah's description

  281. is right.

  282. We live with a shadow

  283. over us.

  284. Look at verse 16.

  285. These people, he says,

  286. are living in the land

  287. of the shadow

  288. of death.

  289. The darkness

  290. of this world

  291. has only one end.

  292. And that is

  293. death itself.

  294. This is the kingdom

  295. of Satan.

  296. Darkness

  297. and death

  298. prevails.

  299. This is what

  300. we experience

  301. in our life.

  302. And sadly,

  303. this is what we

  304. inflict on each other.

  305. But yet,

  306. this is the world

  307. that God himself

  308. steps into.

  309. He's not immune

  310. to it.

  311. He comes in the person

  312. of his son.

  313. Look back at verse

  314. 13.

  315. Leaving Nazareth,

  316. he went

  317. and lived

  318. in Capernaum.

  319. He went

  320. to a people

  321. of darkness

  322. and he lived

  323. amongst them.

  324. He entered

  325. into the darkness.

  326. He entered

  327. into your world

  328. and my world.

  329. He understands.

  330. He knows.

  331. Because he encountered

  332. darkness.

  333. But he enters it

  334. because he comes

  335. to bring

  336. light.

  337. People are

  338. in darkness.

  339. But the light

  340. has come.

  341. Look at verse

  342. 16.

  343. The people

  344. living in darkness

  345. have seen

  346. a great light

  347. on those living

  348. in the land

  349. of the shadow

  350. of death.

  351. A light

  352. has dawned.

  353. Every morning

  354. at this time

  355. of year,

  356. if you're up

  357. early enough,

  358. that is,

  359. you will

  360. awaken

  361. in the darkness.

  362. But slowly

  363. as the sun

  364. begins to rise,

  365. so that darkness

  366. is dispelled.

  367. Light has come.

  368. Well,

  369. that's exactly

  370. what Jesus

  371. has come to do.

  372. He is the light

  373. who comes

  374. breaking through

  375. into the darkness

  376. for us.

  377. And to understand

  378. why we need

  379. the light

  380. of Jesus,

  381. we need

  382. to go back

  383. to Isaiah

    Isaiah 9 chapter mention

  384. chapter 9

  385. where this

  386. quote

  387. comes from.

  388. So if you

  389. go back

  390. in your Bibles

  391. to Isaiah

    Isaiah 9 chapter mention

  392. chapter 9

  393. and we'll

  394. see a little

  395. bit clearer

  396. why

  397. the light

  398. had to come.

  399. Because we

  400. live in a

  401. world of

  402. darkness

  403. darkness,

  404. we live

  405. with the

  406. shadow

  407. of death

  408. and we

  409. look for a

  410. way out

  411. of it,

  412. a way to

  413. get through

  414. it.

  415. And here

  416. in Isaiah

  417. 9,

  418. or really

  419. it's at the

  420. very end

  421. of chapter

  422. 8,

  423. the last

  424. couple of

  425. verses,

  426. we're

  427. introduced

  428. to,

  429. well,

  430. as Isaiah

  431. describes them,

  432. a people

  433. who've ignored

  434. God's word

  435. and sought

  436. their own

  437. solution to

  438. the darkness.

  439. darkness.

  440. And this

  441. is what

  442. they find.

  443. Look at the

  444. very end

  445. of verse

  446. 21.

  447. Looking

  448. upwards,

  449. they will

  450. curse their

  451. king and

  452. their God,

  453. shaking their

  454. fists angrily

  455. at God for

  456. all that there

  457. is.

  458. And then

  459. they will

  460. look towards

  461. the earth

  462. and see

  463. only distress

  464. and darkness

  465. and fearful

  466. gloom,

  467. and they

  468. will be

  469. thrust

  470. into utter

  471. darkness.

  472. Isn't that

  473. what we

  474. do?

  475. We look

  476. to ourselves

  477. and to

  478. other people

  479. to lift

  480. the darkness

  481. and to

  482. remove the

  483. shadow of

  484. death,

  485. but as we

  486. look to

  487. others,

  488. what do

  489. we find?

  490. Well,

  491. just more

  492. distress and

  493. darkness.

  494. We look

  495. to other

  496. people and

  497. what do

  498. we get?

  499. More fear

  500. and gloom.

  501. Rather than

  502. fix our

  503. lives and

  504. our world,

  505. we only

  506. make things

  507. worse.

  508. That's why

  509. we need

  510. the light.

  511. That's why

  512. we need

  513. Jesus.

  514. Look at

  515. chapter 9

  516. verse 1.

  517. Nevertheless,

  518. there will

  519. be no

  520. more glooms

  521. for those

  522. who are

  523. in distress.

  524. Verse 2.

  525. For the

  526. people walking

  527. in darkness

  528. have seen

  529. a great

  530. light.

  531. On those

  532. living in

  533. the land

  534. of deep

  535. darkness,

  536. a light

  537. has

  538. dawned.

  539. Jesus

  540. has come.

  541. Matthew

  542. identifies

  543. that who

  544. Isaiah

  545. is speaking

  546. about is

  547. Jesus,

  548. the one

  549. who comes

  550. into the

  551. darkness

  552. of our

  553. hearts

  554. to destroy

  555. the shadow

  556. of death.

  557. You see,

  558. Jesus enters

  559. the darkness

  560. to set us

  561. free.

  562. And how

  563. does he

  564. do that?

  565. Well,

  566. he wins

  567. the battle

  568. for us.

  569. He wins

  570. the battle

  571. for us.

  572. Look down

  573. at verse 5,

  574. Isaiah

    Isaiah 9:5

  575. chapter 9

  576. verse 5.

  577. Isaiah

  578. here

  579. pictures a

  580. battle

  581. scene,

  582. but it's

  583. a battle

  584. that has

  585. been won.

  586. Verse 5.

  587. Every

  588. warrior's

  589. boot

  590. used in

  591. battle

  592. and every

  593. garment

  594. that has

  595. been rolled

  596. in blood

  597. will be

  598. destined for

  599. burning,

  600. will be

  601. fuelled

  602. for the

  603. fire.

  604. The

  605. garments

  606. of war,

  607. the

  608. uniform

  609. of the

  610. soldier

  611. has now

  612. been taken

  613. off,

  614. stained in

  615. blood.

  616. The battle

  617. was fierce.

  618. It's been

  619. ripped off

  620. and now it

  621. is burned

  622. up because

  623. they are no

  624. longer needed.

  625. The battle

  626. has been

  627. won.

  628. we don't

  629. need to

  630. fight the

  631. battle

  632. because

  633. Jesus has

  634. come to

  635. do the

  636. battle for

  637. us.

  638. And that

  639. battle was

  640. ultimately

  641. fought and

  642. won for

  643. us at

  644. the cross

  645. and it

  646. was a

  647. bloody

  648. battle.

  649. For as

  650. Jesus took

  651. my sin

  652. and your

  653. sin,

  654. we are

  655. told that

  656. darkness

  657. came over

  658. the whole

  659. land,

  660. symbolic of

  661. the ways

  662. and deeds

  663. of Satan.

  664. Jesus was

  665. thrust into

  666. utter darkness,

  667. suffering the

  668. darkness of

  669. hell for

  670. you and

  671. for me.

  672. But yet

  673. three days

  674. later,

  675. that warrior

  676. who went

  677. into battle

  678. would rise

  679. again from

  680. the grave,

  681. destroying

  682. the shadow

  683. of death

  684. that is over

  685. us,

  686. his resurrection

  687. confirming

  688. that this

  689. battle has

  690. been won

  691. once and

  692. for all.

  693. the apostle

  694. Paul would

  695. put it like

  696. this,

  697. you can read

  698. on screen.

  699. For he,

  700. that is the

  701. Son,

  702. has rescued

  703. us from

  704. the dominion

  705. of darkness

  706. and brought

  707. us into

  708. the kingdom

  709. of the

  710. Son he

  711. loves,

  712. in whom

  713. we have

  714. redemption,

  715. the forgiveness

  716. of all

  717. our sins.

  718. He takes

  719. us from

  720. darkness

  721. and brings

  722. us into

  723. light.

  724. a place

  725. of fear

  726. and gloom

  727. and distress

  728. to a

  729. kingdom of

  730. love

  731. and beauty

  732. where we

  733. are forgiven

  734. and treasured

  735. and made

  736. his children.

  737. That's

  738. what Jesus

  739. has done.

  740. He has

  741. faced the

  742. devil for

  743. us and

  744. he wins,

  745. fully equipped

  746. and able

  747. and qualified.

  748. He enters

  749. the battle

  750. and he

  751. does war

  752. on our

  753. behalf

  754. so that

  755. we can

  756. enter his

  757. kingdom.

  758. So how

  759. do we

  760. experience

  761. this kingdom

  762. of light?

  763. How do

  764. we get

  765. to enter?

  766. Well,

  767. third,

  768. Jesus,

  769. if you like,

  770. the warrior

  771. king,

  772. the victorious

  773. champion,

  774. now comes

  775. to us

  776. and says,

  777. follow me

  778. as your

  779. captain.

  780. Follow me

  781. as your

  782. captain.

  783. Because if we

  784. are to know

  785. and enjoy

  786. the freedom

  787. that he has

  788. come to give

  789. us,

  790. then we need

  791. to follow

  792. him.

  793. Let's go

  794. back to

  795. Matthew 4.

  796. Back to

  797. Matthew 4.

  798. Matthew 4.

  799. Matthew 4.

  800. Matthew 4.

  801. Matthew 4.

  802. Matthew 4.

  803. Matthew 4.

  804. Matthew 5.

  805. Because as

  806. Jesus came

  807. to live

  808. in the

  809. darkness,

  810. he comes

  811. to call

  812. people to

  813. follow him.

  814. Look at

  815. verse 19.

  816. As Jesus

  817. was walking

  818. by the

  819. lake,

  820. he sees

  821. two sets

  822. of brothers.

  823. Verse 19,

  824. he says,

  825. come,

  826. follow me.

  827. And at

  828. once they

  829. left their

  830. nets and

  831. followed him.

  832. A little

  833. later he

  834. met two

  835. more brothers

  836. and Jesus

  837. called to

  838. them,

  839. saying,

  840. follow me,

  841. and immediately

  842. they followed

  843. him.

  844. You see,

  845. following

  846. Jesus is

  847. nothing less

  848. than a

  849. radical

  850. transformation

  851. of our

  852. whole life

  853. and thinking,

  854. our

  855. perspective.

  856. And the

  857. question that

  858. is before

  859. us,

  860. are we

  861. going to

  862. follow the

  863. triumphant

  864. king?

  865. Are we

  866. going to

  867. be loyal

  868. to our

  869. commander

  870. and captain?

  871. For

  872. Jesus comes

  873. to us

  874. and says,

  875. if you

  876. want to

  877. experience

  878. this

  879. kingdom,

  880. then you

  881. must

  882. follow me.

  883. You must

  884. follow.

  885. Look back

  886. in verse

  887. 17.

  888. From that

  889. time on,

  890. Jesus

  891. began to

  892. preach,

  893. repent,

  894. for the

  895. kingdom of

  896. heaven has

  897. come near.

  898. The call

  899. to follow

  900. is essentially

  901. a call

  902. to repent.

  903. It's saying,

  904. will you

  905. turn from

  906. yourself?

  907. Will you

  908. put down

  909. the weapons

  910. that you

  911. fight against

  912. God and

  913. your desire

  914. to be

  915. Lord and

  916. King over

  917. your life?

  918. Will you

  919. lay down

  920. your weapons

  921. and will

  922. you turn

  923. and trust

  924. in the

  925. Saviour,

  926. the one

  927. who has

  928. won for

  929. you?

  930. Will you

  931. trust him

  932. who entered

  933. the darkness

  934. and has

  935. given you

  936. life?

  937. You see,

  938. to follow

  939. Jesus is a

  940. commitment to

  941. say,

  942. I am no

  943. longer going

  944. to trust in

  945. my own

  946. resources or

  947. willpower.

  948. I see

  949. my weakness

  950. and the

  951. only one I

  952. can follow

  953. is the

  954. strength of

  955. my warrior,

  956. the Lord

  957. Jesus Christ,

  958. who gives

  959. us grace

  960. and mercy

  961. in every

  962. test and

  963. trial we

  964. come up

  965. against.

  966. There is

  967. nothing so

  968. big or so

  969. great that

  970. he cannot

  971. supply the

  972. grace that

  973. we need

  974. in our

  975. times of

  976. trial and

  977. temptation.

  978. And when

  979. we fail,

  980. he gives

  981. us forgiveness.

  982. Will you

  983. follow this

  984. captain?

  985. Will you

  986. walk with

  987. him?

  988. It's a

  989. life of

  990. continuous

  991. repentance

  992. and faith

  993. as we

  994. trust in

  995. our

  996. redeemer who

  997. takes us

  998. from darkness

  999. into light.

  1000. life of

  1001. God.

  1002. But not

  1003. only that,

  1004. our warrior

  1005. king calls

  1006. us to a

  1007. new purpose.

  1008. He gives

  1009. us a

  1010. brand new

  1011. mission.

  1012. Jesus is

  1013. come,

  1014. hasn't he,

  1015. to rescue

  1016. people from

  1017. the kingdom

  1018. of Satan.

  1019. He's come

  1020. to free us

  1021. from the

  1022. kingdom of

  1023. darkness,

  1024. to bring us

  1025. into the

  1026. kingdom of

  1027. light.

  1028. And now

  1029. that mission

  1030. is ours,

  1031. not to

  1032. fight the

  1033. battle because

  1034. that's already

  1035. won,

  1036. but to go

  1037. with new

  1038. weapons of

  1039. war,

  1040. the weapon

  1041. of the

  1042. gospel,

  1043. the good

  1044. news of

  1045. the Lord

  1046. Jesus Christ.

  1047. Look what it

  1048. says in

  1049. verse 19.

  1050. Jesus says

  1051. to these

  1052. fishermen,

  1053. come follow

  1054. me,

  1055. Jesus said,

  1056. and I will

  1057. send you

  1058. out to

  1059. fish for

  1060. people.

  1061. our mission

  1062. is now to

  1063. go empowered

  1064. and equipped

  1065. with the

  1066. good news

  1067. of Jesus,

  1068. not to

  1069. convince people

  1070. because that's

  1071. what God

  1072. will do,

  1073. but to

  1074. call people,

  1075. to point

  1076. them to

  1077. Jesus and

  1078. say,

  1079. look at

  1080. him,

  1081. the one

  1082. who can

  1083. take you

  1084. from distress

  1085. and darkness,

  1086. one who

  1087. can bring

  1088. you into

  1089. light and

  1090. beauty and

  1091. forgiveness.

  1092. He will

  1093. do it for

  1094. you.

  1095. As one

  1096. writer

  1097. commented,

  1098. we are not

  1099. here to

  1100. gaze at

  1101. the aquarium

  1102. in comfort.

  1103. We are to

  1104. go into

  1105. the rough

  1106. sea of

  1107. this world

  1108. and do

  1109. the work

  1110. of a

  1111. fisherman.

  1112. I'm

  1113. challenged

  1114. by that.

  1115. Maybe

  1116. we're too

  1117. busy gazing

  1118. at the

  1119. aquarium,

  1120. looking at

  1121. one another.

  1122. We're to

  1123. go into

  1124. the rough

  1125. seas of

  1126. this world

  1127. and to

  1128. do the

  1129. work of

  1130. a fisherman.

  1131. This is

  1132. our purpose.

  1133. This is

  1134. our new

  1135. goal.

  1136. This is

  1137. our aim

  1138. in life.

  1139. This is

  1140. the mission

  1141. that the

  1142. risen Lord

  1143. Jesus,

  1144. the victorious

  1145. captain,

  1146. has given

  1147. us.

  1148. Go and

  1149. make

  1150. disciples of

  1151. all nations

  1152. is how

  1153. Matthew

  1154. finishes his

  1155. gospel,

  1156. because that

  1157. is the

  1158. purpose.

  1159. So when

  1160. we waken

  1161. up each

  1162. morning,

  1163. remind

  1164. yourself,

  1165. who are

  1166. you?

  1167. Maybe

  1168. you think,

  1169. oh, I'm

  1170. a teacher,

  1171. I'm going

  1172. off to

  1173. school today,

  1174. I'm a

  1175. mother,

  1176. I'm looking

  1177. after my

  1178. kids today,

  1179. I'm a

  1180. worker,

  1181. I'm going

  1182. to be

  1183. online today.

  1184. Whoever

  1185. we are,

  1186. you wake

  1187. up and

  1188. you remind

  1189. yourself,

  1190. well,

  1191. remind

  1192. ourselves

  1193. this,

  1194. I need

  1195. to do

  1196. it.

  1197. Johnny,

  1198. you're a

  1199. fisherman.

  1200. You've

  1201. been

  1202. called

  1203. by God

  1204. to go

  1205. and present

  1206. the good

  1207. news to

  1208. people,

  1209. the gospel,

  1210. the power

  1211. that brings

  1212. people from

  1213. the kingdom

  1214. of darkness

  1215. to a kingdom

  1216. of light.

  1217. So mums,

  1218. when you

  1219. wake up,

  1220. you're not

  1221. just a taxi

  1222. driver for

  1223. your children,

  1224. you're calling

  1225. your children

  1226. to the kingdom.

  1227. kingdom.

  1228. When you

  1229. spend time

  1230. with your

  1231. family,

  1232. yes,

  1233. you're there

  1234. to provide

  1235. and to

  1236. care,

  1237. but you're

  1238. to raise

  1239. a family

  1240. for the

  1241. kingdom.

  1242. When you

  1243. socialize

  1244. with your

  1245. friends,

  1246. yes,

  1247. we have

  1248. a laugh,

  1249. yes,

  1250. it's to

  1251. be good

  1252. fun,

  1253. but we

  1254. are calling

  1255. them to

  1256. a kingdom.

  1257. And when

  1258. you go to

  1259. work,

  1260. yes,

  1261. you want

  1262. to get a

  1263. salary to

  1264. pay off all

  1265. your bills,

  1266. yes,

  1267. you want

  1268. to perhaps

  1269. go up

  1270. the career

  1271. ladder,

  1272. but you

  1273. are there,

  1274. God has

  1275. placed you

  1276. there to

  1277. bring the

  1278. light of

  1279. his kingdom

  1280. through every

  1281. act of

  1282. service by

  1283. listening

  1284. attentively

  1285. and

  1286. sensitively,

  1287. praying for

  1288. those who

  1289. will meet,

  1290. giving a

  1291. reason for

  1292. the hope

  1293. we have,

  1294. calling

  1295. people to

  1296. the kingdom.

  1297. Are we

  1298. going to be

  1299. loyal?

  1300. to this

  1301. kingdom

  1302. work that

  1303. we have

  1304. been called

  1305. to?

  1306. Did you

  1307. notice the

  1308. response of

  1309. the brothers?

  1310. Do you

  1311. see what

  1312. they said

  1313. at verse

  1314. 20?

  1315. At

  1316. once,

  1317. they left

  1318. their nets

  1319. and followed

  1320. him.

  1321. Verse 22,

  1322. immediately

  1323. they left

  1324. their boat

  1325. and their

  1326. father and

  1327. followed

  1328. him.

  1329. this is

  1330. a matter

  1331. of life

  1332. and death.

  1333. This is

  1334. serious.

  1335. It's the

  1336. kingdom of

  1337. darkness

  1338. versus the

  1339. kingdom of

  1340. light.

  1341. The kingdom

  1342. of Satan

  1343. which ends

  1344. in destruction

  1345. or the

  1346. kingdom of

  1347. heaven

  1348. which is

  1349. life eternal.

  1350. God

  1351. you see

  1352. when Jesus

  1353. calls us

  1354. and he is

  1355. calling us

  1356. today

  1357. he's calling

  1358. us to

  1359. leave work.

  1360. They left

  1361. their nets.

  1362. He's calling

  1363. us to leave

  1364. family.

  1365. They left

  1366. their father

  1367. and they

  1368. followed him.

  1369. Now

  1370. does Jesus

  1371. really mean

  1372. for me to

  1373. leave work

  1374. and not to

  1375. go to work

  1376. tomorrow and

  1377. move out of

  1378. my house and

  1379. leave my

  1380. family?

  1381. Now if we

  1382. read on through

  1383. Matthew's

  1384. gospel we

  1385. discover that

  1386. they did

  1387. continue fishing

  1388. and they

  1389. did spend

  1390. time with

  1391. their family.

  1392. So what

  1393. does it

  1394. mean?

  1395. Well it

  1396. means holding

  1397. loosely our

  1398. work and our

  1399. family and

  1400. grasping

  1401. tightly the

  1402. priorities of

  1403. Jesus.

  1404. You see I

  1405. think it's

  1406. fair to say

  1407. isn't it?

  1408. Aren't work

  1409. and family the

  1410. things that

  1411. dominate our

  1412. minds most of

  1413. all?

  1414. Aren't we

  1415. thinking about

  1416. our families

  1417. the most?

  1418. Don't we

  1419. think about

  1420. work the

  1421. most?

  1422. Don't we

  1423. talk about

  1424. these things

  1425. the most?

  1426. It's what we

  1427. build our

  1428. lives around.

  1429. But rather

  1430. than hold on

  1431. to work for

  1432. our security

  1433. he's saying

  1434. hold on to

  1435. me.

  1436. Hold on to

  1437. Jesus.

  1438. Instead of

  1439. clinging on to

  1440. family for

  1441. comfort and

  1442. for all our

  1443. needs cling

  1444. to Jesus.

  1445. Why?

  1446. Well because we

  1447. can lose our

  1448. work at any

  1449. stage.

  1450. Your job can

  1451. be taken from

  1452. you just like

  1453. that.

  1454. We can lose

  1455. our family,

  1456. any members of

  1457. our family,

  1458. myself, any of

  1459. us could die at

  1460. any moment.

  1461. None of it

  1462. lasts.

  1463. But we can

  1464. never ever

  1465. lose Jesus.

  1466. Nothing can

  1467. separate us

  1468. from him.

  1469. Not even the

  1470. darkness,

  1471. not even death.

  1472. The kingdom of

  1473. this world will

  1474. be blown away

  1475. but the kingdom

  1476. of heaven

  1477. will last

  1478. forever.

  1479. Forever.

  1480. Jesus has

  1481. confronted the

  1482. devil for you

  1483. and for me

  1484. and he has

  1485. won.

  1486. He's entered

  1487. the darkness

  1488. and he's

  1489. fought the

  1490. battle for

  1491. us.

  1492. And now he

  1493. calls us,

  1494. follow me,

  1495. follow me

  1496. in this

  1497. kingdom work.

  1498. Join the

  1499. fight.

  1500. Pick up the

  1501. weapon of the

  1502. good news of

  1503. Jesus Christ

  1504. and go

  1505. wherever you

  1506. are scattered.

  1507. Your loyalty

  1508. to me

  1509. and I will

  1510. be with you.

  1511. Let's pray.

  1512. Amen.

  1513. Amen.

  1514. Amen.

  1515. Amen.

  1516. Amen.

  1517. Amen.

  1518. Amen.

  1519. Amen.

  1520. Amen.

  1521. Amen.

  1522. Amen.

  1523. Amen.

  1524. Amen.

  1525. Amen.

  1526. Amen.

  1527. Amen.

  1528. Amen.

  1529. Amen.

  1530. Amen.

  1531. Father,

  1532. once again,

  1533. your word

  1534. presents

  1535. before us

  1536. your amazing

  1537. son,

  1538. our

  1539. savior,

  1540. who has

  1541. won

  1542. salvation

  1543. for us,

  1544. who has

  1545. brought us

  1546. from a

  1547. kingdom of

  1548. darkness

  1549. into the

  1550. kingdom of

  1551. the son

  1552. he loves

  1553. and

1554. how we are treasured and loved

1555. and cared for by you.

1556. Thank you for life today.

1557. Thank you for an eternal kingdom to come.

  1558. And we pray

1559. that in light of all of this

  1560. we will follow you.

1561. Father, would you impress upon us

1562. the areas of our life

1563. that we so tightly hold on to

1564. that we would let it go

  1565. and grasp firmly

1566. the priorities of your kingdom.

1567. Go with us as you have promised.

  1568. Use us

  1569. to bring our children,

  1570. our family,

  1571. those within our community,

  1572. those we'll meet tomorrow.

  1573. Use us

1574. to bring them and point them

1575. to the kingdom of light.

1576. Help us, we pray in Jesus' name.

  1577. Amen.

  1578. We're going to sing

  1579. the church.

  1580. We're going to sing
