  1. So we're going to read Matthew's Gospel, Matthew chapter 8, from verses 1 through to 22.

    Matthew 8 chapter mention

  2. So follow along with me as we read God's Word.

  3. When Jesus came down from the mountainside, large crowds followed him.

  4. A man with leprosy came and knelt before him and said,

  5. Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.

  6. Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man.

  7. I am willing, he said. Be clean.

  8. Immediately he was cleansed of his leprosy.

  9. Then Jesus said to him,

  10. See that you don't tell anyone, but go show yourself to the priests

  11. and offer the gift of Moses commanded as a testimony to them.

  12. When Jesus had entered Capernaum, a centurion came to him, asking for help.

  13. Lord, he said, my servant lies at home paralyzed, suffering terribly.

  14. Jesus said to him,

  15. Shall I come and heal him?

  16. The centurion replied,

  17. Lord, I do not deserve to have you come under my roof,

  18. but just say the word and my servant will be healed,

  19. for I myself am a man under authority with soldiers under me.

  20. I tell this one, go, and he goes,

  21. and that one, come, and he comes.

  22. I say to my servant, do this, and he does it.

  23. When Jesus heard this, he was amazed and said to those following him,

  24. Truly I tell you, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith.

  25. I say to you that many will come from the east and the west

  26. and will take their places at the feast with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven.

  27. But the subjects of the kingdom will be thrown outside, into the darkness,

  28. where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

  29. Then Jesus said to the centurion,

  30. Go, let it be done just as you believed it would.

  31. And his servant was healed at that moment.

  32. When Jesus came into Peter's house,

  33. he saw Peter's mother-in-law lying in bed with a fever.

  34. He touched her hand and the fever left her,

  35. and she got up and began to wait on him.

  36. When evening came, many who were demon-possessed were brought to him,

  37. and he drove out the spirits with a word and healed all who were ill.

  38. This was to fulfil what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah.

  39. He took up our infirmities and bore our diseases.

  40. When Jesus saw the crowd around him,

  41. he gave orders to cross to the other side of the lake.

  42. Then a teacher of the law came to him and said,

  43. Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.

  44. Jesus replied,

  45. Foxes have dens, birds have nests,

  46. but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.

  47. Another disciple said to him,

  48. Lord, first let me go and bury my father.

  49. But Jesus told him,

  50. Follow me and let the dead bury their own dead.

  51. Well, keep your Bibles open there at Matthew 8,

  52. and let's pray and ask for God's help

  53. as we look at his word together.

  54. Let's pray.

  55. Amen.

  56. Father, thank you for the Gospel of Matthew,

  57. for this true historical account of Jesus.

  58. we pray that stories and accounts that may be familiar to us

  59. will become fresh.

  60. And if we've never heard them before,

  61. that we will equally be refreshed and amazed

  62. at the wonder of who Jesus is.

  63. May our focus and our gaze be upon him.

  64. May our minds

  65. be pulled towards him.

  66. And may our hearts be changed

  67. so that we reflect him and do his will

  68. wherever we go.

  69. In Jesus we pray.

  70. Amen.

  71. Well, every day we're reminded

  72. that we live in a broken and a disordered world.

  73. Turn on the television today

  74. and we're reminded of that.

  75. Sinful choices

  76. and the sinful actions of others

  77. mean that we do indeed struggle.

  78. We observe and experience

  79. all kinds of physical suffering

  80. and sicknesses.

  81. And in the midst of all of that

  82. we have to deal with the destructive

  83. schemes of Satan.

  84. The reality is

  85. wherever we go and wherever we look

  86. we see sin, suffering

  87. and Satan.

  88. And together they leave us

  89. crushed, broken

  90. and in despair.

  91. And it's into this very world

  92. that Jesus steps.

  93. His mission has been crystal clear

  94. to announce to the world

  95. that he is God's King.

  96. The Supreme King.

  97. And he has come to establish

  98. a new kingdom

  99. an eternal kingdom

  100. where everything will be put

  101. right.

  102. And in chapters 8 and 9

  103. we're giving a preview

  104. of what this kingdom

  105. will be like.

  106. In chapters 8 and 9

  107. Jesus overcomes

  108. sin, suffering

  109. and Satan

  110. for us.

  111. And to help us see this

  112. Matthew has ordered

  113. his material

  114. deliberately

  115. and intentionally.

  116. So just follow with me.

  117. Just use the headings

  118. that you have in your Bible.

  119. you'll see that there's

  120. three miracle accounts

  121. followed by a call

  122. to follow.

  123. So beginning of chapter 8

  124. there's the healing

  125. of the man with leprosy.

  126. Then there's the

  127. centurion servant.

  128. And then Jesus heals

  129. many.

  130. And then there's this call

  131. to follow Jesus.

  132. Then after that

  133. we have three more miracles.

  134. Jesus calming the storm.

  135. Jesus restoring the demon

  136. possessed men.

  137. Forgiving and healing

  138. the paralysed man.

  139. And then

  140. we have a second calling.

  141. The calling of Matthew.

  142. And then if we read on

  143. we have Jesus raising

  144. a dead girl.

  145. Healing a sick woman.

  146. And then Jesus healing

  147. the blind and mute.

  148. And followed that

  149. is the call

  150. to go

  151. into the harvest

  152. because it is

  153. plentiful.

  154. These miracle accounts

  155. have been written

  156. and ordered

  157. for an intentional purpose.

  158. You can see it

  159. on the screen.

  160. Through these accounts

  161. Jesus displays

  162. his authority

  163. over all things

  164. and demands

  165. our allegiance

  166. in all things.

  167. The miracles

  168. that we read about

  169. are like a spotlight

  170. drawing our attention

  171. to Jesus

  172. and his kingdom.

  173. A king with

  174. absolute authority

  175. who demands

  176. nothing less

  177. than our complete

  178. allegiance.

  179. So two things

  180. we're going to look at

  181. from our text

  182. this morning

  183. in Matthew chapter 8.

    Matthew 8 chapter mention

  184. Jesus displaying

  185. his authority

  186. and demanding

  187. our allegiance.

  188. So first

  189. Jesus displays

  190. his authority

  191. and he does it

  192. in three ways.

  193. First

  194. overcoming

  195. sin.

  196. Look at verse 2.

  197. A man with

  198. leprosy

  199. comes and kneels

  200. before Jesus

  201. and he cries

  202. out to Jesus

  203. Lord

  204. if you're willing

  205. you can make me

  206. clean.

  207. Now this man

  208. has a terrible

  209. skin disease

  210. which deadens

  211. the nerves

  212. and knocks

  213. off your limbs.

  214. It means you

  215. can't feel pain.

  216. It results in

  217. infection

  218. and ultimately

  219. death.

  220. Treatments now

  221. but certainly

  222. back then

  223. there was nothing.

  224. Physically

  225. this man

  226. is in a

  227. hopeless situation

  228. which is why

  229. his request

  230. is surprising.

  231. He doesn't

  232. say to Jesus

  233. heal my

  234. leprosy.

  235. He says

  236. can you

  237. make me

  238. clean?

  239. You see

  240. under

  241. Jewish law

  242. under

  243. Jewish

  244. religious law

  245. someone with

  246. leprosy

  247. was considered

  248. spiritually

  249. unclean.

  250. in other words

  251. your physical

  252. condition

  253. left you

  254. excluded

  255. and outside

  256. of God.

  257. Here's what

  258. the law said

  259. you can read

  260. it there on

  261. screen.

  262. Anyone with

  263. such a

  264. defiling disease

  265. must wear

  266. torn clothes

  267. let their

  268. hair be

  269. unkempt

  270. cover the

  271. lower part

  272. of their

  273. face

  274. and cry

  275. out

  276. unclean

  277. unclean

  278. as long

  279. as they

  280. have the

  281. disease

  282. they remain

  283. unclean

  284. they must

  285. live alone

  286. they must

  287. live outside

  288. the camp.

  289. In other

  290. words

  291. you can't

  292. come close

  293. to God

  294. which also

  295. meant that

  296. if you

  297. touched

  298. someone

  299. or came

  300. into contact

  301. with someone

  302. who had a

  303. similar skin

  304. disease

  305. you became

  306. contaminated

  307. you became

  308. unclean

  309. and you

  310. were excluded

  311. from God.

  312. So you

  313. have to be

  314. very careful

  315. if you

  316. came in

  317. contact

  318. with a

  319. leper.

  320. So what

  321. would Jesus

  322. do?

  323. Well

  324. look at

  325. verse 3

  326. Jesus

  327. reached out

  328. his hand

  329. and touched

  330. the man

  331. I am

  332. willing

  333. he said

  334. be clean

  335. immediately

  336. he was

  337. cleansed

  338. of his

  339. leprosy.

  340. Now do

  341. you see

  342. what's

  343. happened?

  344. Something

  345. extraordinary

  346. has taken

  347. place.

  348. Instead

  349. of Jesus

  350. being the

  351. one who

  352. becomes

  353. unclean

  354. the leper

  355. becomes

  356. clean.

  357. Instead

  358. of the

  359. leper's

  360. uncleanness

  361. being passed

  362. on to

  363. Jesus

  364. Jesus'

  365. cleanness

  366. is passed

  367. on to

  368. him.

  369. By a

  370. simple

  371. word

  372. be clean

  373. the leper

  374. has his

  375. life

  376. restored.

  377. He's

  378. no longer

  379. excluded

  380. and

  381. unclean.

  382. He is

  383. included

  384. and made

  385. clean.

  386. It's a

  387. beautiful

  388. picture

  389. of a

  390. greater

  391. healing

  392. that we

  393. all need.

  394. The

  395. external

  396. disease

  397. that we

  398. see here

  399. reflects the

  400. internal

  401. sin

  402. that we

  403. all have.

  404. Just as

  405. the man

  406. needs to

  407. be made

  408. clean

  409. outwardly

  410. so we

  411. need to

  412. be made

  413. clean

  414. inwardly.

  415. And through

  416. Jesus by

  417. just a

  418. simple

  419. word,

  420. a simple

  421. command,

  422. all our

  423. uncleanliness,

  424. all our

  425. impurity,

  426. all our

  427. sin can

  428. be removed,

  429. we can

  430. be forgiven,

  431. made

  432. clean.

  433. Jesus

  434. overcomes

  435. sin and

  436. makes us

  437. clean so

  438. that we

  439. can come

  440. to God.

  441. But not

  442. only that,

  443. Jesus

  444. overcomes

  445. suffering.

  446. Look at

  447. verse 5,

  448. when Jesus

  449. had entered

  450. Capernaum,

  451. a centurion

  452. came to

  453. him asking

  454. for help.

  455. Lord,

  456. he said,

  457. my servant

  458. lies at

  459. home paralyzed,

  460. suffering

  461. terribly.

  462. Now a

  463. centurion

  464. was a

  465. soldier of

  466. considerable

  467. authority

  468. within the

  469. Roman army.

  470. He was

  471. captain over

  472. at least

  473. a hundred

  474. men.

  475. men.

  476. But he

  477. was also

  478. a despised

  479. outsider.

  480. Being in

  481. the Roman

  482. army meant

  483. he was

  484. part of

  485. the

  486. unwanted

  487. occupying

  488. forces.

  489. Through

  490. their

  491. military

  492. might,

  493. the

  494. Romans

  495. had

  496. expanded

  497. their

  498. empire,

  499. swallowing

  500. up smaller

  501. nations like

  502. Palestine.

  503. He was

  504. an enemy,

  505. someone to

  506. be despised

  507. and hated.

  508. So a

  509. centurion who

  510. comes asking

  511. for help,

  512. well here

  513. was an

  514. opportunity

  515. for payback.

  516. The context

  517. here is like

  518. a Ukrainian

  519. helping a

  520. Russian

  521. soldier.

  522. It was a

  523. chance to

  524. let him

  525. experience

  526. pain.

  527. Let him

  528. suffer.

  529. How would

  530. Jesus respond?

  531. Well look at

  532. verse 7.

  533. Jesus said

  534. to him,

  535. shall I

  536. come and

  537. heal him?

  538. I mean

  539. what an

  540. extraordinary

  541. gracious

  542. thing to

  543. do, to

  544. reach out

  545. to your

  546. enemy like

  547. this.

  548. Not only

  549. does Jesus

  550. go to

  551. where the

  552. servant is,

  553. he offers

  554. to heal

  555. him.

  556. He reaches

  557. out to

  558. the despised

  559. outsider.

  560. He shows

  561. compassion

  562. towards his

  563. worst

  564. enemy.

  565. The centurion

  566. didn't need

  567. a second

  568. offer.

  569. Verse 8.

  570. Lord, I

  571. do not

  572. deserve to

  573. have you

  574. come under

  575. my roof,

  576. but just

  577. say the

  578. word and

  579. my servant

  580. will be

  581. healed.

  582. Verse 13.

  583. Then Jesus

  584. said to

  585. the centurion,

  586. go, let

  587. it be done

  588. just as you

  589. believed it

  590. would.

  591. And his

  592. servant was

  593. healed at

  594. that moment.

  595. It's

  596. extraordinary,

  597. isn't it?

  598. Jesus

  599. isn't even

  600. in the

  601. home of

  602. the centurion.

  603. He's not

  604. even present

  605. with the

  606. suffering

  607. servant.

  608. Jesus

  609. just says

  610. from a

  611. distance,

  612. go.

  613. And

  614. immediately

  615. the servant

  616. is healed

  617. and freed

  618. from his

  619. life of

  620. suffering.

  621. Now

  622. incredible

  623. as this

  624. is,

  625. let's

  626. not miss

  627. the greater

  628. healing and

  629. restoration

  630. that's

  631. taking place.

  632. Because

  633. Jesus

  634. uses this

  635. moment to

  636. teach about

  637. all those

  638. who can

  639. be welcomed

  640. into his

  641. kingdom.

  642. Look at

  643. verse 10.

  644. When

  645. Jesus

  646. heard this,

  647. he was

  648. amazed and

  649. said to

  650. those following

  651. him,

  652. truly I

  653. tell you,

  654. I have

  655. not found

  656. anyone in

  657. Israel with

  658. such great

  659. faith.

  660. For what

  661. was so

  662. different about

  663. the centurion's

  664. faith to

  665. anybody

  666. else's

  667. faith that

  668. he's

  669. come

  670. across.

  671. Well,

  672. look back

  673. to what

  674. the centurion

  675. has just

  676. said,

  677. verse 9.

  678. He says,

  679. I myself

  680. am a man

  681. under

  682. authority,

  683. with

  684. soldiers

  685. under me.

  686. I tell

  687. this one

  688. go,

  689. and he

  690. goes,

  691. that one

  692. come,

  693. and he

  694. comes,

  695. I say

  696. to my

  697. servant,

  698. do this,

  699. and he

  700. does it.

  701. You see,

  702. he understands

  703. authority,

  704. yet he

  705. recognises a

  706. greater

  707. authority

  708. in Jesus.

  709. He knew

  710. that Jesus

  711. just had

  712. to say

  713. a word,

  714. and it

  715. would be

  716. done.

  717. You see,

  718. here's what

  719. Jesus is

  720. teaching us.

  721. He's saying,

  722. I have

  723. come to

  724. enemies like

  725. you,

  726. so that you

  727. could be

  728. welcomed into

  729. my kingdom.

  730. I have

  731. come to

  732. welcome

  733. outsiders,

  734. to those

  735. who oppose

  736. me,

  737. and stand

  738. against me.

  739. Verse 11,

  740. I say

  741. to you,

  742. that many

  743. will come

  744. from the

  745. east and

  746. the west,

  747. and will

  748. take their

  749. places at

  750. the feast

  751. with Abraham,

  752. Isaac,

  753. and Jacob,

  754. in the

  755. kingdom of

  756. heaven.

  757. Look,

  758. he's saying,

  759. if you

  760. just come

  761. in humble

  762. faith,

  763. just like

  764. the centurion,

  765. if you

  766. come relying

  767. and depending

  768. on the

  769. words of

  770. Jesus,

  771. you too

  772. will be

  773. welcomed

  774. into my

  775. kingdom.

  776. But where

  777. Jesus'

  778. authority is

  779. ignored and

  780. rejected,

  781. look at

  782. verse 12,

  783. the subjects,

  784. those who

  785. think they

  786. are in,

  787. will be

  788. thrown

  789. outside into

  790. the darkness,

  791. where there

  792. will be

  793. weeping and

  794. gnashing of

  795. teeth.

  796. You see,

  797. Jesus frees

  798. us from a

  799. greater suffering,

  800. the suffering

  801. of hell

  802. itself.

  803. it doesn't

  804. matter who

  805. you are,

  806. what you've

  807. done,

  808. your background,

  809. your experience,

  810. hear the

  811. welcome of

  812. Jesus.

  813. There is a

  814. seat at the

  815. king's table

  816. for all who

  817. will come in

  818. humble faith

  819. to Jesus.

  820. He

  821. overcomes

  822. suffering

  823. to welcome

  824. the outsider

  825. in.

  826. sin.

  827. So he

  828. overcomes

  829. sin,

  830. he

  831. overcomes

  832. suffering,

  833. and Jesus

  834. overcomes

  835. Satan.

  836. Look at

  837. verse 16,

  838. when evening

  839. came,

  840. many who

  841. were demon

  842. possessed

  843. were brought

  844. to him.

  845. Now we

  846. should never

  847. ever ignore

  848. the reality

  849. of Satan

  850. and his

  851. work.

  852. From the

  853. first time

  854. of when he

  855. rebelled

  856. against God,

  857. Satan has

  858. been on a

  859. mission to

  860. disrupt and

  861. destroy God's

  862. kingdom.

  863. In fact,

  864. his work

  865. can leave us

  866. feeling hopeless.

  867. You see,

  868. in our culture

  869. and experience,

  870. I would imagine,

  871. most of us

  872. think of demon

  873. possession

  874. as unreal.

  875. It's the stuff

  876. of horror movies.

  877. But no,

  878. demons,

  879. the servants

  880. of Satan

  881. are very much

  882. active.

  883. We should be

  884. alert,

  885. we should be

  886. attentive.

  887. Sometimes it

  888. comes in the

  889. way of

  890. temptation,

  891. other times

  892. it can come

  893. in the way

  894. of torment.

  895. We're given

  896. an example

  897. of what it

  898. might appear

  899. to be.

  900. Verse 28,

  901. when Jesus

  902. arrived on

  903. the other

  904. side in the

  905. region of

  906. the Gadarenes,

  907. two demon

  908. possessed men

  909. came from

  910. the tombs,

  911. met him.

  912. They were

  913. so violent

  914. that no one

  915. could pass

  916. that way.

  917. Here were

  918. two people

  919. overcome,

  920. their lives

  921. ruined and

  922. destroyed.

  923. They wrecked

  924. people's lives,

  925. causing mental

  926. and physical

  927. anguish.

  928. And for all

  929. those that came

  930. to Jesus back

  931. in verse 16,

  932. whatever the

  933. impact,

  934. they were

  935. unable to

  936. change their

  937. situation.

  938. they were

  939. powerless,

  940. they were

  941. hopeless.

  942. And how

  943. is Jesus

  944. going to

  945. respond to

  946. them?

  947. Well, look

  948. at the rest

  949. of verse 16.

  950. Let's read it

  951. again.

  952. When evening

  953. came, many

  954. who were

  955. demon possessed

  956. were brought

  957. to him,

  958. and he

  959. drove out

  960. the spirits

  961. with a

  962. word,

  963. and healed

  964. all who

  965. were ill.

  966. With just

  967. a word,

  968. the spirits

  969. left.

  970. at his

  971. command,

  972. they fled.

  973. You see,

  974. Satan may

  975. tempt and

  976. torment,

  977. but he is

  978. no match

  979. for the

  980. authority of

  981. Jesus.

  982. Jesus rules

  983. over the

  984. kingdom of

  985. darkness.

  986. He has

  987. power over

  988. demons.

  989. Satan has

  990. no hold

  991. over you

  992. if you

  993. have

  994. Jesus.

  995. If we're

  996. followers of

  997. Jesus,

  998. we do not

  999. need to

  1000. fear.

  1001. In fact,

  1002. scripture

  1003. tells us

  1004. that Satan

  1005. requires the

  1006. permission of

  1007. Jesus before

  1008. he can do

  1009. anything.

  1010. Jesus reigns

  1011. supreme

  1012. over all

  1013. things.

  1014. And when

  1015. Jesus has

  1016. finished speaking

  1017. to these

  1018. spirits,

  1019. not only do

  1020. the spirits

  1021. leave the

  1022. people,

  1023. but their

  1024. lives are

  1025. restored.

  1026. They no

  1027. longer live

  1028. in fear,

  1029. they've got

  1030. hope.

  1031. They're no

  1032. longer living

  1033. in torment,

  1034. they have

  1035. peace.

  1036. You see,

  1037. scripture is

  1038. clear that

  1039. we've all

  1040. been born

  1041. following the

  1042. ways of

  1043. Satan.

  1044. We're all

  1045. part of

  1046. this great

  1047. big rebellion

  1048. against God,

  1049. but through

  1050. Jesus we're

  1051. set free

  1052. and restored.

  1053. Jesus

  1054. overcomes

  1055. Satan and

  1056. restores the

  1057. hopelessness.

  1058. sins.

  1059. So Jesus

  1060. overcomes

  1061. sin,

  1062. suffering,

  1063. and Satan.

  1064. He cleans,

  1065. he welcomes,

  1066. and he

  1067. restores.

  1068. And he

  1069. does it all

  1070. through his

  1071. work on the

  1072. cross.

  1073. You see,

  1074. what Jesus

  1075. has done for

  1076. these few

  1077. people that

  1078. we get to

  1079. meet in

  1080. chapter 8,

  1081. Jesus has

  1082. done for

  1083. all who

  1084. will trust

  1085. in his

  1086. work on

  1087. the cross.

  1088. Look at

  1089. verse 17.

  1090. All these

  1091. healings,

  1092. all that

  1093. has happened.

  1094. Verse 17,

  1095. this was to

  1096. fulfil what

  1097. was spoken

  1098. through the

  1099. prophet Isaiah.

  1100. He took

  1101. up our

  1102. infirmities

  1103. and bore

  1104. our

  1105. diseases.

  1106. Now, to

  1107. help us

  1108. understand that,

  1109. we need to

  1110. read it in

  1111. its whole

  1112. context.

  1113. It comes

  1114. from Isaiah

  1115. 53.

  1116. It's a

  1117. well-known

  1118. passage.

  1119. And in

  1120. that chapter,

  1121. chapter 53,

  1122. the prophet

  1123. Isaiah is

  1124. looking forward

  1125. to the

  1126. coming of

  1127. a servant

  1128. king,

  1129. Jesus,

  1130. who would

  1131. die on

  1132. the cross.

  1133. And this

  1134. is what he

  1135. says.

  1136. You can

  1137. follow on

  1138. screen here.

  1139. Quoting,

  1140. what we

  1141. have here

  1142. in Matthew.

  1143. Surely he

  1144. took up

  1145. our pain

  1146. and bore

  1147. our suffering.

  1148. Yet we

  1149. considered him

  1150. punished by

  1151. God,

  1152. stricken by

  1153. him,

  1154. and afflicted.

  1155. But he

  1156. was pierced

  1157. for our

  1158. transgressions.

  1159. He was

  1160. crushed for

  1161. our iniquities.

  1162. The punishment

  1163. that brought

  1164. us peace

  1165. was on him.

  1166. And by

  1167. his wounds

  1168. we are

  1169. healed.

  1170. You see,

  1171. when Jesus

  1172. died on

  1173. the cross,

  1174. he was

  1175. overcoming

  1176. sin,

  1177. suffering,

  1178. and Satan.

  1179. He took

  1180. your sin

  1181. and was

  1182. punished and

  1183. crushed for

  1184. you.

  1185. He suffered

  1186. the hell for

  1187. you that we

  1188. deserve so

  1189. that we

  1190. don't have

  1191. to.

  1192. Jesus faced

  1193. the deceiving

  1194. and destructive

  1195. schemes of

  1196. Satan and

  1197. won.

  1198. Jesus took

  1199. it all to

  1200. the grave

  1201. and he

  1202. triumphed

  1203. over it

  1204. all as

  1205. he rose

  1206. from the

  1207. dead.

  1208. Jesus

  1209. overcame

  1210. everything

  1211. so that

  1212. we could

  1213. be made

  1214. clean,

  1215. welcomed,

  1216. and restored.

  1217. Now,

  1218. does this

  1219. mean if

  1220. we're

  1221. trusting

  1222. Jesus we

  1223. live a

  1224. life free

  1225. from sin,

  1226. suffering,

  1227. and Satan?

  1228. That it's

  1229. all done

  1230. with once

  1231. and for

  1232. all?

  1233. Well,

  1234. yes,

  1235. our sin

  1236. has been

  1237. paid for,

  1238. but we

  1239. still live

  1240. in our

  1241. broken world.

  1242. We still

  1243. suffer the

  1244. consequences

  1245. of sin.

  1246. Yes,

  1247. God can

  1248. still heal

  1249. and he

  1250. does,

  1251. but we

  1252. still have

  1253. broken

  1254. bodies and

  1255. we will

  1256. all die

  1257. of some

  1258. disease or

  1259. some

  1260. disaster.

  1261. Yes,

  1262. Satan has

  1263. been defeated

  1264. and disarmed,

  1265. but he is

  1266. still scheming

  1267. through his

  1268. temptation.

  1269. You see,

  1270. what Jesus

  1271. is showing

  1272. us here,

  1273. what he did

  1274. for these

  1275. people,

  1276. he is giving

  1277. us a glimpse

  1278. of what is

  1279. to come.

  1280. It's a preview

  1281. of his

  1282. eternal kingdom,

  1283. a kingdom

  1284. where there

  1285. will be no

  1286. more sin,

  1287. suffering,

  1288. or Satan.

  1289. And that

  1290. kingdom has

  1291. been secured

  1292. for us by

  1293. Jesus through

  1294. his death

  1295. on the

  1296. cross.

  1297. So,

  1298. Jesus displays

  1299. his absolute

  1300. authority by

  1301. overcoming

  1302. sin,

  1303. Satan,

  1304. and suffering.

  1305. And he does

  1306. it all by

  1307. his cross.

  1308. allegiance.

  1309. Because when we

  1310. consider the

  1311. authority and

  1312. the power of

  1313. Jesus,

  1314. the question

  1315. is,

  1316. what am I

  1317. going to do

  1318. about it?

  1319. How am I

  1320. going to

  1321. respond to

  1322. who this

  1323. Jesus is?

  1324. Well,

  1325. the only

  1326. right response

  1327. is complete

  1328. allegiance.

  1329. three things

  1330. very briefly

  1331. that ought

  1332. to be

  1333. expressed.

  1334. Here's the

  1335. first.

  1336. Unwavering

  1337. loyalty.

  1338. Look at

  1339. verse 19.

  1340. Then a

  1341. teacher of the

  1342. law came to

  1343. Jesus and

  1344. said,

  1345. Teacher,

  1346. I will

  1347. follow you

  1348. wherever you

  1349. go.

  1350. You see,

  1351. if Jesus

  1352. is the

  1353. supreme king

  1354. with absolute

  1355. authority,

  1356. there is

  1357. nothing that

  1358. he cannot

  1359. ask of you.

  1360. Like the

  1361. soldiers under

  1362. the centurion,

  1363. we are

  1364. soldiers under

  1365. the king of

  1366. kings who

  1367. says to

  1368. this one,

  1369. go and

  1370. he goes,

  1371. to this

  1372. one,

  1373. come and

  1374. he comes,

  1375. to this

  1376. one,

  1377. do this

  1378. and he

  1379. does it.

  1380. We don't

  1381. get to do

  1382. deals with

  1383. the Lord

  1384. Jesus.

  1385. We can't

  1386. come to

  1387. him and

  1388. say,

  1389. I'll

  1390. follow you,

  1391. but just

  1392. know this,

  1393. this area

  1394. of my life

  1395. is off

  1396. limits.

  1397. You cannot

  1398. do anything

  1399. with this.

  1400. You cannot

  1401. have my

  1402. days off,

  1403. my trips

  1404. away,

  1405. and my

  1406. time.

  1407. This is

  1408. for me.

  1409. Everything

  1410. else,

  1411. over to

  1412. you.

  1413. No,

  1414. it's all

  1415. or nothing.

  1416. It's an

  1417. unwavering

  1418. loyalty.

  1419. If you

  1420. are in

  1421. his kingdom,

  1422. you give

  1423. up rights

  1424. to self.

  1425. You follow

  1426. wherever and

  1427. whatever he

  1428. commands.

  1429. That is

  1430. the response

  1431. to his

  1432. authority.

  1433. Also,

  1434. unconditional

  1435. trust.

  1436. verse 20,

  1437. Jesus

  1438. replied,

  1439. Foxes

  1440. have

  1441. dens,

  1442. birds

  1443. have

  1444. nests,

  1445. but the

  1446. Son of

  1447. Man,

  1448. speaking of

  1449. himself,

  1450. has nowhere

  1451. to lay

  1452. his head.

  1453. You see,

  1454. if Jesus

  1455. has authority

  1456. over all

  1457. things,

  1458. and if he

  1459. is calling

  1460. us today

  1461. to follow

  1462. him,

  1463. then it

  1464. means I

  1465. can trust

  1466. him.

  1467. We don't

  1468. need to

  1469. fear the

  1470. future.

  1471. I don't

  1472. need to

  1473. worry about

  1474. my health.

  1475. If Jesus

  1476. is Lord

  1477. over sin,

  1478. suffering,

  1479. and Satan,

  1480. he calls

  1481. for

  1482. unconditional

  1483. trust.

  1484. Following

  1485. Jesus may

  1486. mean lack

  1487. of material

  1488. comfort and

  1489. financial

  1490. security.

  1491. Jesus knew

  1492. this.

  1493. He says,

  1494. I have

  1495. nowhere where

  1496. I can call

  1497. home.

  1498. He had

  1499. made the

  1500. universe.

  1501. He owns

  1502. everything,

  1503. but he

  1504. made no

  1505. claim on

  1506. it.

  1507. He trusted

  1508. his heavenly

  1509. father for

  1510. all things.

  1511. So we

  1512. too, if

  1513. we follow

  1514. him, are

  1515. to trust

  1516. that he

  1517. will provide

  1518. us for

  1519. all that

  1520. he asked

  1521. us to

  1522. step into.

  1523. He will

  1524. sustain.

  1525. He will

  1526. keep.

  1527. Unwavering

  1528. loyalty,

  1529. unconditional

  1530. trust,

  1531. and undivided

  1532. devotion.

  1533. Look at

  1534. verse 21.

  1535. Another

  1536. disciple said

  1537. to him,

  1538. Lord,

  1539. first let

  1540. me go and

  1541. bury my

  1542. father.

  1543. But Jesus

  1544. told him,

  1545. follow me

  1546. and let

  1547. the dead

  1548. bury their

  1549. own dead.

  1550. Seems a

  1551. bit harsh,

  1552. doesn't it?

  1553. A bit

  1554. cruel.

  1555. But Jesus

  1556. isn't saying,

  1557. don't go to

  1558. your parents

  1559. funeral or

  1560. don't visit

  1561. them.

  1562. Jesus is

  1563. saying,

  1564. your love

  1565. for me is

  1566. to be

  1567. greater than

  1568. your love

  1569. for your

  1570. own family.

  1571. I come

  1572. first.

  1573. I want

  1574. your

  1575. undivided

  1576. devotion.

  1577. family.

  1578. You see,

  1579. one of the

  1580. obstacles people

  1581. have to

  1582. following Jesus

  1583. is family.

  1584. Family is

  1585. so important.

  1586. And parents

  1587. can put a

  1588. huge

  1589. expectation,

  1590. not just on

  1591. little children,

  1592. but even

  1593. adult children.

  1594. There's

  1595. unspoken

  1596. demands within

  1597. families that

  1598. must always

  1599. be obeyed.

  1600. Emotional

  1601. pressures that

  1602. must always be

  1603. followed.

  1604. Family

  1605. traditions that

  1606. must be

  1607. upheld.

  1608. No,

  1609. says Jesus.

  1610. You

  1611. obey

  1612. me.

  1613. You

  1614. follow

  1615. me.

  1616. You see,

  1617. if Jesus

  1618. has absolute

  1619. authority over

  1620. sin,

  1621. suffering and

  1622. Satan,

  1623. if Jesus

  1624. has given

  1625. his life for

  1626. you and

  1627. for me so

  1628. that we

  1629. could be

  1630. made clean,

  1631. welcomed and

  1632. restored into

  1633. his kingdom,

  1634. the only right

  1635. response is to

  1636. bow down and

  1637. say,

  1638. I will

  1639. follow you.

  1640. But know

  1641. what he is

  1642. calling us

  1643. to.

  1644. He demands

  1645. complete

  1646. allegiance,

  1647. nothing else,

  1648. a life of

  1649. unwavering

  1650. loyalty,

  1651. unconditional

  1652. trust,

  1653. an undivided

  1654. devotion.

  1655. him.

  1656. He is

  1657. king.

  1658. We

  1659. follow him.

  1660. Let's

  1661. pray.

  1662. Let's

  1663. pray.

  1664. Father,

  1665. there is so

  1666. much that

  1667. trouble us

  1668. in this

  1669. world,

  1670. not least

  1671. our own

  1672. struggles with

  1673. sin and

  1674. putting self

  1675. first.

  1676. Each of

  1677. us, I'm

  1678. sure, has

  1679. a story to

  1680. tell of

  1681. personal

  1682. suffering.

  1683. And we

  1684. all face

  1685. the schemes

  1686. and temptations

  1687. and torments

  1688. of Satan.

  1689. And yet

  1690. you, Lord

  1691. Jesus, have

  1692. come and

  1693. have proved

  1694. your authority

  1695. over it

  1696. all,

  1697. your supreme

  1698. power,

  1699. welcoming

  1700. us into

  1701. a new

  1702. kind of

  1703. kingdom,

  1704. offering us

  1705. eternal

  1706. life,

  1707. offering us

  1708. glories to

  1709. come,

  1710. peace today,

  1711. and a

  1712. glorious God

  1713. who will

  1714. walk with

  1715. us.

  1716. So,

  1717. Father, would

  1718. you help us

  1719. follow you

  1720. as we

  1721. should,

  1722. to give up

  1723. our claims

  1724. to ourself,

  1725. our claims

  1726. to our

  1727. comfort,

  1728. our claims

  1729. to our

  1730. rights.

  1731. And would

  1732. we bow in

  1733. humble,

  1734. humbleness

  1735. before you

  1736. and say,

  1737. Lord, here,

  1738. here am I.

  1739. Help me that

  1740. I may follow

  1741. you and go

  1742. where you call

  1743. and do

  1744. as you

  1745. ask.

  1746. Help us,

  1747. we pray,

  1748. in Jesus'

  1749. name.

  1750. Amen.

  1751. We're going

  1752. to sing

  1753. together

  1754. a song

  1755. that I

  1756. hope

  1757. brings

  1758. together

  1759. our

  1760. thoughts

  1761. today.

  1762. What

  1763. grace is

  1764. mine,

  1765. the grace

  1766. that has

  1767. come to

  1768. us,

  1769. and the

  1770. chorus is,

  1771. so I

  1772. will go

  1773. wherever

  1774. he is

  1775. calling

  1776. me.

  1777. I

  1778. lose

  1779. my

  1780. life

  1781. to

  1782. find

  1783. my

  1784. life

  1785. in

  1786. him.

  1787. I

  1788. give

  1789. my

  1790. all

  1791. to

  1792. gain

  1793. the

  1794. hope

  1795. that

  1796. never

  1797. dies.

  1798. I

  1799. bow

  1800. my

  1801. heart,

  1802. take

  1803. up

  1804. my

  1805. cross

  1806. and

  1807. follow

  1808. him.

  1809. May

  1810. this

  1811. song

  1812. be

  1813. our

  1814. prayer,

  1815. our

  1816. response

  1817. to

  1818. the

  1819. authority

  1820. and

  1821. power

  1822. of

  1823. Jesus.

  1824. Let's

  1825. stand

  1826. as we

  1827. sing.

  1828. praise

  1829. his

  1830. light,

  1831. let's

  1832. he who

  1833. dwells

  1834. in

  1835. endless

  1836. light,

  1837. call

  1838. through

  1839. the

  1840. night

  1841. to

  1842. fight

  1843. his

  1844. love.

  1845. And

  1846. from

  1847. his

  1848. heart

  1849. for

  1850. mercy

  1851. that

  1852. would

  1853. be

  1854. for

  1855. me,

  1856. that

  1857. I

  1858. might

  1859. live

  1860. and

  1861. in

  1862. his

  1863. pain

  1864. be

  1865. poor.

  1866. So I

  1867. will

  1868. go

  1869. wherever

  1870. he

  1871. is

  1872. calling,

  1873. I

  1874. do

  1875. my

  1876. life

  1877. to
