  2. Excellent.

  3. Okay.

  4. That would be great.

  5. Thank you, Johnny.

  6. So, I'm Johnny, and this is John.

  7. I met John almost 23, 24 years ago, Kirstie and I, just as we'd finished Bible college,

  8. went to serve and work with the church in Dublin.

  9. John was the pastor there, Grosvenor Road Baptist Church.

  10. I served under him.

  11. He was a mentor and a trainer.

  12. So, all that I know, John has taught me most of what I know.

  13. So, very thankful and grateful for that.

  14. John now serves in London.

  15. He preaches and teaches and pastors in Richmond, in London, Duke Street Baptist Church.

  16. And he's been here this weekend teaching at Munster Bible College.

  17. He does have a great love for the church here in Ireland and for the believers and loves

  18. to serve the church.

  19. So, we're just delighted that you are here today.

  20. So, thanks for coming, John.

  21. Thank you so much.

  22. Johnny.

  23. It's a joy to be with you and particularly to see Johnny and Kirstie flourishing.

  24. And I'm sure you're grateful for them and are looking after them well.

  25. So, let me encourage you to continue to do that.

  26. And let's turn to God's Word together to Genesis 32.

  27. Please.

  28. It's Genesis chapter 32.

    Genesis 32 chapter mention

  29. It's the book of origins.

  30. Genesis means, as I'm sure you know, origins or beginning.

  31. And it's the beginning of God's dealings with his world.

  32. And in particular, with Abraham and Abraham's family, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

  33. And we've reached the point in the story, excuse me, where Jacob has, having cheated his brother,

  34. 20 years later, is on his way back home.

  35. And in chapter 32, we read, Jacob also went on his way.

  36. He's been chased by his father-in-law, but finally made the break.

  37. And the angels of God met him.

  38. When Jacob saw them, he said, this is the camp of God, or two camps.

  39. So he named that place Two Camps, Mahanaim.

  40. Jacob sent messengers ahead of him to his brother Esau in the land of Seir, the country of Edom.

  41. He instructed them, this is what you are to say to my master Esau.

  42. Your servant Jacob says, I've been staying with Laban and have remained there till now.

  43. I've cattle and donkeys, sheep and goats, menservants and maidservants.

  44. Now I'm sending this message to my Lord that I may find favor in your eyes.

  45. Remember, this is the brother he cheated at the inheritance 20 years ago.

  46. When the messengers returned to Jacob, they said, we went to your brother Esau and now he's coming to meet you.

  47. And 400 men are with him.

  48. In great fear and distress, Jacob divided the people who were with him into two groups,

  49. and the flocks and herds and camels as well.

  50. He thought if Esau comes and attacks one group, the group that is left may escape.

  51. Then Jacob prayed, O God of my father Abraham, God of my father Isaac, O Lord who said to me,

  52. go back to your country and your relatives and I'll make you prosper.

  53. I am unworthy of all the kindness and faithfulness you have shown your servant.

  54. I had only my staff when I crossed this Jordan, but now I have become two groups.

  55. Jacob said, save me, I pray, from the hand of my brother Esau, for I am afraid he'll come and attack me,

  56. and also the mothers with their children.

  57. But you have said, I will surely make you prosper,

  58. and will make your descendants like the sands of the sea, which cannot be counted.

  59. Jacob spent the night there, and from what he had with him,

  60. he selected a gift for his brother Esau.

  61. In fact, a whole bunch of gifts that he sends on ahead to try and win his brother's favor.

  62. Verse 21 we'll jump to.

  63. So Jacob's gifts went on ahead of him, but he himself spent the night in the camp.

  64. That night Jacob got up and took his two wives, his two maidservants,

  65. and his eleven sons and crossed the ford of the Jabbok.

  66. After he'd sent them across the stream, he sent over all his possessions.

  67. So Jacob was left alone,

  68. and the man wrestled with him till daybreak.

  69. When the man saw that he couldn't overpower him,

  70. he touched the socket of Jacob's hip,

  71. so that his hip was wrenched as he wrestled with the man.

  72. Then the man said,

  73. Let me go, for it is daybreak.

  74. But Jacob replied,

  75. I will not let you go, unless you bless me.

  76. The man asked him,

  77. What is your name?

  78. Jacob, he answered.

  79. Then the man said to him,

  80. Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel.

  81. Because you have, which means God struggles or struggles with God.

  82. Because you have struggled with God,

  83. and with men,

  84. and have overcome.

  85. Jacob said,

  86. Please tell me your name.

  87. But he replied,

  88. Why do you ask my name?

  89. Then he blessed him there.

  90. So Jacob called the place,

  91. Face of God,

  92. Peniel,

  93. saying,

  94. It is because I saw God face to face,

  95. and yet my life was spared.

  96. The sun rose above him as he passed Peniel,

  97. and he was limping

  98. because of his hip.

  99. Therefore, to this day,

  100. the Israelites do not eat the tendon

  101. attached to the socket of the hip,

  102. because the socket of Jacob's hip

  103. was touched near the tendon.

  104. Well, let's pray and ask God's help.

  105. Father, please,

  106. in whatever state of mind

  107. or emotion we are in right now,

  108. please would you open

  109. our eyes and our hearts

  110. to see wonderful things in your word.

  111. We ask for Jesus' sake.

  112. Amen.

  113. Well, if God is for us,

  114. who can be against us?

  115. I expect you know that expression from,

  116. sorry, from Romans 8.

  117. But what do you do

  118. when it feels that God is against you?

  119. Maybe you've been given

  120. very difficult parents

  121. or relations.

  122. Maybe you've lost your job

  123. despite acting with integrity,

  124. and you wonder, in fact,

  125. it's because you acted with integrity

  126. that you lost it.

  127. Maybe you just struggle

  128. economically.

  129. You try to be careful with money,

  130. but you never seem to get a job

  131. that does more than enable you

  132. just to bump along

  133. the economic bottom.

  134. Maybe you're struggling

  135. to find a marriage partner,

  136. or you find one

  137. but can't have children,

  138. or you get given children

  139. and one of them,

  140. or more than one,

  141. proves to be an absolute nightmare.

  142. Maybe serious illness

  143. strikes out of the blue,

  144. or a life-changing injury.

  145. Or you lose a loved one,

  146. as they say,

  147. before their time.

  148. Or war breaks out.

  149. We're spared that at the moment,

  150. but imagine

  151. what it's like to be

  152. a Christian in Ukraine.

  153. Maybe it sometimes feels

  154. that not only are specific people

  155. against you,

  156. but God himself

  157. is against you.

  158. Well, if that's how you feel

  159. or ever feel,

  160. then Jacob knew

  161. just what that felt like.

  162. First it was Esau,

  163. then it was God.

  164. And yet there had been

  165. such clear guidance.

  166. If you look back

  167. to chapter 31,

  168. verse 3,

  169. Jacob up north

  170. with his father-in-law,

  171. his family,

  172. hears this word

  173. from the Lord,

  174. verse 3 of chapter 31.

  175. Then the Lord said to Jacob,

  176. Go back to the land

  177. of your fathers

  178. and to your relatives,

  179. and I will be with you.

  180. Chapter 32,

  181. verse 1,

  182. we read,

  183. Jacob went on his way,

  184. and the angels of God

  185. met him.

  186. That's a very strange expression,

  187. isn't it?

  188. The only other time

  189. this occurs

  190. is in his dream

  191. back in chapter 28

  192. when Jacob saw

  193. that famous stairway to heaven

  194. with the angels,

  195. the messengers of God,

  196. going up and down,

  197. up and down.

  198. Well, he calls it

  199. in chapter 32,

  200. verse 2,

  201. the camp of God,

  202. or two camps.

  203. And it must surely

  204. have been an encouragement

  205. to sense that God's army

  206. is camped beside you,

  207. right?

  208. Or is it?

  209. It's God's army,

  210. not his.

  211. But anyway,

  212. Jacob,

  213. we read from

  214. verse 3,

  215. sends messengers,

  216. or it's the same word

  217. actually as angels,

  218. to Esau

  219. with the most

  220. ingratiating message,

  221. say to my lord Esau.

  222. Do you see that?

  223. Say to my lord Esau.

  224. Sorry,

  225. my master,

  226. it's translated,

  227. isn't it,

  228. in the NIV.

  229. Say to my master Esau,

  230. your servant,

  231. Jacob,

  232. says.

  233. Now,

  234. it's as if Jacob

  235. is trying to reverse

  236. the effects

  237. of his earlier theft

  238. of the inheritance

  239. from his brother.

  240. But the intelligence report

  241. that he gets back

  242. is terrifying.

  243. The messages

  244. return,

  245. verse 6,

  246. to Jacob,

  247. and they said,

  248. we went to your brother Esau,

  249. and now he's coming

  250. to meet you.

  251. And by the way,

  252. he's not alone.

  253. He's got 400 men

  254. with him.

  255. You and whose army?

  256. Well,

  257. there are two

  258. sections of what

  259. we're going to be

  260. looking at this morning.

  261. The first is the fear of man,

  262. verses 6 to 21 here

  263. in chapter 32.

  264. The fear of man.

  265. Because we see

  266. in verse 7

  267. that it's in great

  268. fear and distress

  269. that Jacob is left

  270. when he hears this news.

  271. Because he's surely

  272. going to be attacked

  273. and destroyed

  274. by the brother

  275. who for 20 years

  276. has been waiting

  277. to take vengeance

  278. on his kid brother

  279. who cheated him

  280. out of the inheritance.

  281. And what does Jacob do?

  282. Well,

  283. he does two things here.

  284. First,

  285. he schemes

  286. verses 7 and 8,

  287. and we see that

  288. played out

  289. in verses 13 to 20.

  290. He divides his entourage

  291. into two camps

  292. and divides his

  293. five-stage present

  294. to try and appease

  295. his brother

  296. by serial generosity.

  297. His brother's coming

  298. down the road

  299. with these 400 men

  300. and he meets

  301. this herd of animals.

  302. And who are you

  303. and whose are these?

  304. Oh,

  305. this is a gift

  306. from your brother Jacob.

  307. And then the next lot.

  308. And five times

  309. he encounters

  310. these generous flocks

  311. given to him.

  312. It's a clever plan.

  313. And yet,

  314. there's a certain

  315. ambiguity about it.

  316. We're not sure,

  317. is this wisdom from God

  318. or is this human desperation?

  319. And then the second way

  320. that,

  321. or the second thing

  322. that Jacob does

  323. in verses 9 to 12

  324. is he prays.

  325. Then,

  326. Jacob prayed,

  327. verse 9.

  328. Oh,

  329. God of my father,

  330. Abraham.

  331. Now,

  332. it wasn't his first action.

  333. The first thing he did

  334. was the scheme.

  335. But it was his best action.

  336. And he appeals

  337. to God's proven character.

  338. You are,

  339. verse 9,

  340. the God of my father,

  341. Abraham,

  342. the God of my father,

  343. Isaac.

  344. He appeals

  345. to the clear

  346. verbal revelation

  347. he has had from God.

  348. Oh,

  349. Lord,

  350. who said to me,

  351. go back to your country

  352. and your relatives

  353. and I'll make you prosper.

  354. He's convinced

  355. that God means

  356. to do him good,

  357. not harm.

  358. And he twice

  359. quotes God,

  360. back to God.

  361. In verse 9,

  362. we just saw it,

  363. and then verse 12.

  364. But you have said,

  365. Lord,

  366. I will surely

  367. make you prosper.

  368. Lord,

  369. that's what you said

  370. to me.

  371. If you're a Christian,

  372. you'll probably know

  373. that wonderful verse

  374. in Romans 8,

    Romans 8:28

  375. verse 28,

  376. that we know

  377. that God works

  378. all things

  379. for the

  380. good

  381. of those

  382. who love him

  383. and are called

  384. according to his purpose.

  385. not for the

  386. bad

  387. or the harm,

  388. but for their good.

  389. Jacob here,

  390. back in

  391. 32.10,

  392. is learning

  393. a certain humility.

  394. There is a new

  395. Jacob here

  396. on display.

  397. Do you see that

  398. in verse 10?

  399. I am

  400. unworthy

  401. of all

  402. the kindness

  403. and faithfulness

  404. you have shown

  405. your servant.

  406. And you know,

  407. that is a necessary

  408. milestone

  409. to reach

  410. in every

  411. spiritual journey

  412. with God.

  413. To realise

  414. that you are

  415. unworthy

  416. of the least

  417. of all

  418. his love

  419. and faithfulness.

  420. Do you remember

  421. the story

  422. Jesus told

  423. of the two

  424. men who went

  425. up to the temple

  426. to pray?

  427. the strictly

  428. religious one

  429. who said,

  430. looking around

  431. at others,

  432. I thank you

  433. Lord that I am

  434. not as bad

  435. as others.

  436. And then

  437. in the corner

  438. by himself,

  439. the reject

  440. in society

  441. who said,

  442. Lord have

  443. mercy on me

  444. the sinner.

  445. It's actually

  446. the sinner.

  447. None of the

  448. English translations

  449. as far as I

  450. can work out

  451. have the courage

  452. to actually

  453. translate it

  454. as the sinner.

  455. They always say

  456. a sinner.

  457. But it says

  458. very clearly

  459. in what Jesus

  460. says,

  461. I am the

  462. sinner.

  463. It's as if

  464. all he could

  465. do is look

  466. to God.

  467. He's not

  468. looking at

  469. other people.

  470. He's just

  471. looking at

  472. God,

  473. as it were,

  474. and looking

  475. at himself

  476. and saying,

  477. when I look

  478. at God

  479. and then I

  480. look at

  481. myself,

  482. what do I

  483. see?

  484. I see

  485. the sinner.

  486. There's no

  487. one else

  488. here.

  489. It's just

  490. God and

  491. me.

  492. And there's

  493. a sense in

  494. which that is

  495. such an

  496. important step

  497. to take,

  498. such an

  499. important position

  500. to get to

  501. in a spiritual

  502. journey,

  503. if we're going

  504. to come to

  505. know God

  506. and his

  507. blessing,

  508. is to

  509. realize that

  510. I am the

  511. sinner.

  512. Do you

  513. remember how

  514. Jesus at the

  515. end of the

  516. story is,

  517. he tells the

  518. story and

  519. then says,

  520. which of

  521. these two

  522. do you

  523. think went

  524. home in

  525. right

  526. relationship

  527. with God?

  528. Was it

  529. the one

  530. who looked

  531. around and

  532. said,

  533. thank you,

  534. I'm not

  535. like others.

  536. There are

  537. some people

  538. so bad,

  539. you know.

  540. Or is it

  541. the one who

  542. just looked

  543. at God

  544. and said,

  545. I am the

  546. sinner,

  547. have mercy

  548. on me,

  549. Lord.

  550. Well,

  551. Jesus said,

  552. it's the

  553. second one

  554. who went

  555. home,

  556. right with

  557. God,

  558. because everyone

  559. who exalts

  560. themselves will

  561. be humbled,

  562. but the one

  563. who humbles

  564. themselves will

  565. be exalted.

  566. While Jacob

  567. is finally

  568. humbling himself,

  569. it seems,

  570. I am unworthy,

  571. verse 10,

  572. of all the

  573. kindness and

  574. faithfulness you

  575. have shown your

  576. servant.

  577. And he pleads

  578. for deliverance,

  579. verse 11,

  580. save me,

  581. I pray,

  582. for I am

  583. afraid.

  584. He admits

  585. his fear.

  586. And if

  587. you're a

  588. believer

  589. today,

  590. then

  591. verse 10

  592. is where

  593. we need

  594. to stay

  595. conscious

  596. of our

  597. unworthiness,

  598. of all the

  599. kindness and

  600. faithfulness we've

  601. been shown by

  602. God.

  603. And if you're

  604. not yet a

  605. believer,

  606. it's a place

  607. you need to

  608. arrive and

  609. get to,

  610. realizing that

  611. you're not

  612. worthy.

  613. of God's

  614. kindness and

  615. faithfulness.

  616. But Jacob

  617. is this

  618. swirling mixture

  619. of faith

  620. and fear,

  621. just like us.

  622. And we

  623. sometimes know

  624. we try to

  625. scheme our

  626. way out of

  627. a sticky

  628. situation rather

  629. than pray our

  630. way out.

  631. So the fear

  632. of man.

  633. Secondly,

  634. the struggle

  635. with God.

  636. we learn in

  637. the first

  638. point that we

  639. need to

  640. forget the

  641. fear of

  642. man and

  643. find fear

  644. of God.

  645. Here it

  646. comes in

  647. this struggle

  648. in verses

  649. 22 to

  650. 32.

  651. Now this

  652. is surely

  653. one of the

  654. strangest

  655. episodes in

  656. the Bible,

  657. isn't it?

  658. God's

  659. love.

  660. Now, I

  661. don't think

  662. this is

  663. about prevailing

  664. prayer, as

  665. some people

  666. try to

  667. understand it.

  668. Jacob did

  669. not decide to

  670. assault the

  671. ramparts of

  672. heaven to

  673. squeeze a

  674. blessing out

  675. of God.

  676. That's not

  677. how it's

  678. recorded.

  679. it.

  680. No, it's

  681. about friendly

  682. fire.

  683. When the

  684. God we

  685. thought was

  686. with us

  687. seems to

  688. be against

  689. us.

  690. It's God

  691. who takes

  692. the initiative.

  693. Do you

  694. see that?

  695. Jacob is

  696. just alone,

  697. verse 24.

  698. And suddenly,

  699. out of the

  700. blue, without

  701. any warning,

  702. a man, who,

  703. well, a

  704. man, wrestled

  705. with him.

  706. Didn't just

  707. come up and

  708. shake his

  709. hand or give

  710. him a fist

  711. pump.

  712. He attacked

  713. him.

  714. Aggressively,

  715. it seems,

  716. physically, in

  717. the dark.

  718. And Jacob

  719. discovers through

  720. this that it's

  721. actually not his

  722. brother or even

  723. himself that he's

  724. been struggling

  725. with all his

  726. life.

  727. It is God.

  728. It is God who

  729. attacks him.

  730. And this is no

  731. dream.

  732. Jacob is left

  733. with a permanent

  734. limp, we read

  735. at the end of

  736. the story.

  737. And yet there is

  738. this strange

  739. ambiguity.

  740. verse 25.

  741. When the man

  742. saw that he

  743. couldn't overpower

  744. him, apparently

  745. the attacker

  746. cannot prevail

  747. against Jacob

  748. yet, when he

  749. saw that he

  750. couldn't overpower

  751. him, he just

  752. touched the

  753. socket of his

  754. hip so that

  755. his hip was

  756. wrenched as he

  757. wrestled with the

  758. man.

  759. And this

  760. out pops the

  761. head of the

  762. femur from the

  763. hip socket.

  764. Jacob, it

  765. seems, is

  766. crippled for

  767. life after

  768. just a touch.

  769. Presumably in

  770. agony when it

  771. happened, at

  772. least.

  773. And strangely, the

  774. attacker does not

  775. wish to be seen.

  776. So, verse 26, the

  777. man said, let me go,

  778. it's daybreak.

  779. But Jacob replied, I'll

  780. not let you go unless

  781. you bless me.

  782. The man asked him,

  783. what is your name?

  784. Jacob, he answered.

  785. Now, getting him to

  786. say his name is not

  787. just an admission of

  788. his identity, it's

  789. like a confession of

  790. guilt.

  791. Remember what his

  792. name means, why his

  793. name was given.

  794. His name means the

  795. heel grabber,

  796. literally.

  797. Or understood by

  798. most as the

  799. grasping cheat.

  800. Who are you?

  801. I am the

  802. grasping cheat.

  803. Ah, nice to

  804. meet you.

  805. And in a

  806. dramatic turning

  807. point, Jacob's

  808. name is changed

  809. from the

  810. cheater of

  811. man to

  812. the

  813. struggler with

  814. God.

  815. The

  816. struggle, which

  817. God surprisingly

  818. says in verse 28,

  819. Jacob has won.

  820. Your name will no

  821. longer be

  822. grasping cheat,

  823. cheater of

  824. people.

  825. But

  826. Israel,

  827. struggler with

  828. God.

  829. Why?

  830. Because you have

  831. struggled with God

  832. and with men and

  833. have overcome.

  834. I'll grant you the

  835. victory.

  836. But it's almost like

  837. if you

  838. challenge a

  839. small child to

  840. an arm

  841. wrestle.

  842. Do you want

  843. to do an

  844. arm wrestle?

  845. And their

  846. little hand can

  847. hardly get

  848. halfway up your

  849. arm.

  850. So you lower

  851. your hand down.

  852. Okay, go.

  853. You beat me.

  854. Really?

  855. Interesting.

  856. Interesting.

  857. And yet,

  858. Jacob is the

  859. one who begs

  860. for the

  861. blessing.

  862. Verse 26,

  863. I will not let

  864. you go unless

  865. you bless me.

  866. And we know

  867. that it's always

  868. the greater

  869. who blesses

  870. the lesser.

  871. So Jacob,

  872. by asking for

  873. the blessing,

  874. is admitting

  875. that he's up

  876. against one who

  877. is greater than

  878. him.

  879. And one of the

  880. other ambiguities,

  881. interestingly,

  882. is that the word

  883. Israel could be

  884. translated

  885. God strives,

  886. God struggles.

  887. It's almost as if,

  888. yes,

  889. Jacob is

  890. struggling,

  891. but God is

  892. also struggling

  893. with Jacob.

  894. He's a hard

  895. to handle man.

  896. Well,

  897. what is clear

  898. is that

  899. the man is

  900. not going to

  901. tell Jacob

  902. his name.

  903. No.

  904. And yet,

  905. Jacob realises

  906. by verse 30

  907. that it was

  908. because I saw

  909. God

  910. face to face

  911. that I'm

  912. calling this

  913. face of God

  914. and yet

  915. my life

  916. was spared.

  917. He realises

  918. he's been

  919. fighting God

  920. and he limps

  921. away from the

  922. encounter,

  923. realising two

  924. things.

  925. Number one,

  926. his life has

  927. been spared

  928. by one who

  929. could have

  930. destroyed him.

  931. Verse 30,

  932. I saw God

  933. face to face

  934. yet my life

  935. was spared.

  936. And the other

  937. thing he realises

  938. is he's not

  939. only been spared,

  940. he's been

  941. blessed

  942. despite

  943. his weakness.

  944. And although

  945. as we read

  946. on,

  947. Jacob persists

  948. in trying

  949. to return

  950. the blessing

  951. he stole

  952. from his

  953. brother Esau,

  954. that seems

  955. to be what

  956. is going

  957. on here.

  958. When he

  959. finally meets

  960. him,

  961. he recognises

  962. this double

  963. favour,

  964. not just

  965. that he's

  966. found favour

  967. in Esau's

  968. eyes,

  969. verse 10

  970. of chapter

  971. 33,

  972. no please,

  973. if I've

  974. found favour

  975. in your

  976. eyes,

  977. accept this

  978. gift from

  979. me.

  980. For to see

  981. your face

  982. is like

  983. seeing the

  984. face of

  985. God,

  986. face of

  987. God,

  988. now that

  989. you have

  990. received me

  991. favourably.

  992. These 400

  993. men put

  994. their weapons

  995. down it

  996. seems and

  997. don't attack.

  998. And then

  999. he prays,

  1000. verse 11,

  1001. please accept

  1002. the present

  1003. that was

  1004. brought to

  1005. you,

  1006. for God

  1007. has been

  1008. gracious to

  1009. me,

  1010. and I

  1011. have all

  1012. I need.

  1013. Favour

  1014. with Esau,

  1015. favour

  1016. with God.

  1017. Now

  1018. favour,

  1019. reconciliation,

  1020. with enemies,

  1021. if you've

  1022. ever been

  1023. in a

  1024. family

  1025. breakdown

  1026. situation

  1027. where

  1028. relationships

  1029. have

  1030. utterly

  1031. broken

  1032. down,

  1033. it's

  1034. wonderful

  1035. when there's

  1036. reconciliation,

  1037. it doesn't

  1038. always happen,

  1039. but when it

  1040. does,

  1041. it's

  1042. wonderful.

  1043. And it

  1044. may be

  1045. part of

  1046. God's

  1047. blessing

  1048. for us

  1049. if that's

  1050. what we're

  1051. struggling

  1052. with.

  1053. But it's

  1054. not favour

  1055. with man

  1056. that ultimately

  1057. matters,

  1058. it's favour

  1059. with God,

  1060. to know

  1061. God's

  1062. gracious

  1063. dealings

  1064. with us,

  1065. that is

  1066. the ultimate

  1067. blessing.

  1068. but

  1069. it may

  1070. mean

  1071. times

  1072. when God

  1073. seems to

  1074. be against

  1075. us.

  1076. We're going

  1077. to finish

  1078. by going

  1079. to 2

    2 Corinthians 12 chapter mention

  1080. Corinthians

  1081. chapter 12

  1082. because this

  1083. experience

  1084. of feeling

  1085. that God

  1086. is against

  1087. us is

  1088. something that

  1089. the Apostle

  1090. Paul speaks

  1091. very eloquently

  1092. of and

  1093. experienced

  1094. in his own

  1095. life.

  1096. Corinthians

  1097. chapter 12

  1098. verse 7

  1099. having just

  1100. described some

  1101. extraordinary

  1102. experiences he

  1103. had,

  1104. he'd had,

  1105. he says in

  1106. verse 7

  1107. to keep me

  1108. from becoming

  1109. conceited

  1110. because of

  1111. these surpassingly

  1112. great revelations.

  1113. There was given

  1114. to me a thorn

  1115. in my flesh.

  1116. We don't know

  1117. what it was,

  1118. it seems to be

  1119. something physical.

  1120. A messenger

  1121. of Satan

  1122. to torment

  1123. me.

  1124. Three times

  1125. I pleaded

  1126. with the Lord

  1127. to take it

  1128. away from me

  1129. but the Lord

  1130. said to me

  1131. my grace

  1132. is sufficient

  1133. for you

  1134. for my power

  1135. is made

  1136. perfect

  1137. in weakness.

  1138. Therefore

  1139. says Paul

  1140. I will boast

  1141. all the more

  1142. gladly about

  1143. my weaknesses

  1144. so that

  1145. Christ's power

  1146. may rest

  1147. on me.

  1148. That is why

  1149. for Christ's

  1150. sake

  1151. I delight

  1152. in weaknesses

  1153. in insults

  1154. in hardships

  1155. in persecutions

  1156. in difficulties.

  1157. Why?

  1158. That's very perverse

  1159. Paul

  1160. isn't it?

  1161. No

  1162. because

  1163. when I am

  1164. weak

  1165. then I am

  1166. strong.

  1167. Do you see

  1168. how he describes

  1169. this thorn in the

  1170. flesh

  1171. in verse

  1172. 7?

  1173. It's a

  1174. messenger

  1175. of Satan.

  1176. Satan

  1177. means adversary.

  1178. This is the one

  1179. who's against us

  1180. against all

  1181. God's people

  1182. and yet

  1183. this is clearly

  1184. something Paul

  1185. sees as permitted

  1186. by God.

  1187. He asks God

  1188. to remove it.

  1189. Three times

  1190. verse 8

  1191. I pleaded

  1192. with the Lord

  1193. to take it

  1194. away from me.

  1195. Well why do you

  1196. plead with the Lord?

  1197. Well because

  1198. he's the one

  1199. who allowed it.

  1200. Why?

  1201. To keep

  1202. Paul humble.

  1203. Verse 7

  1204. to keep me

  1205. from becoming

  1206. conceited.

  1207. But Paul

  1208. surely if God

  1209. really loved you

  1210. he wouldn't have

  1211. allowed this thorn

  1212. in the flesh

  1213. would he?

  1214. He's not for you

  1215. he's against you.

  1216. Well our adversary

  1217. is also the

  1218. father of lies.

  1219. One of his lies

  1220. is that when bad

  1221. things happen to

  1222. Christians

  1223. it's because God

  1224. is against them

  1225. and that's not

  1226. true.

  1227. And yet

  1228. when Paul

  1229. petitions God

  1230. and pleads

  1231. with him

  1232. to take it

  1233. away

  1234. three times

  1235. he says

  1236. verse 8

  1237. I pleaded

  1238. with the Lord

  1239. what did the

  1240. Lord say

  1241. each time

  1242. and never

  1243. it seems

  1244. changed his

  1245. mind on this

  1246. no

  1247. Paul

  1248. no

  1249. no

  1250. no

  1251. but Lord

  1252. what is going

  1253. on here?

  1254. Why

  1255. are you saying

  1256. no to me?

  1257. Well here's

  1258. why Paul

  1259. verse 9

  1260. the Lord said

  1261. to me

  1262. my grace

  1263. is sufficient

  1264. for you

  1265. for my

  1266. power

  1267. is made

  1268. perfect

  1269. in your

  1270. weakness

  1271. no Paul

  1272. you're going

  1273. to have to

  1274. live with

  1275. the thorn

  1276. in your

  1277. flesh

  1278. you're going

  1279. to have

  1280. to walk

  1281. with a

  1282. limp

  1283. for the

  1284. rest

  1285. of your

  1286. days

  1287. and if

  1288. we're still

  1289. struggling

  1290. with this

  1291. idea

  1292. that

  1293. the

  1294. power

  1295. can

  1296. come

  1297. through

  1298. weakness

  1299. think of

  1300. the Lord

  1301. Jesus

  1302. on the

  1303. cross

  1304. my God

  1305. my God

  1306. why have

  1307. you

  1308. forsaken

  1309. me?

  1310. Surely

  1311. in

  1312. the cross

  1313. of Christ

  1314. the crucifixion

  1315. of our

  1316. Lord

  1317. Jesus

  1318. nothing

  1319. is a

  1320. more powerful

  1321. picture of

  1322. weakness

  1323. and yet

  1324. as we

  1325. sang earlier

  1326. this is the

  1327. power of the

  1328. cross

  1329. this is the

  1330. power to

  1331. save us

  1332. but it's

  1333. the power

  1334. of weakness

  1335. this is the

  1336. logic of

  1337. God

  1338. the power

  1339. to save

  1340. the world

  1341. is in the

  1342. weakness

  1343. of the

  1344. cross

  1345. and we need

  1346. to remember

  1347. that when

  1348. God seems

  1349. against us

  1350. that this

  1351. is how

  1352. God works

  1353. to bring

  1354. strength

  1355. and power

  1356. spiritual

  1357. strength

  1358. spiritual

  1359. power

  1360. into our

  1361. lives

  1362. and that

  1363. is how

  1364. we can

  1365. say with

  1366. Paul

  1367. verse 10

  1368. that for

  1369. Christ's

  1370. sake

  1371. I

  1372. delight

  1373. in

  1374. weaknesses

  1375. in

  1376. insults

  1377. in

  1378. hardships

  1379. in

  1380. persecutions

  1381. in

  1382. difficulties

  1383. for

  1384. when I

  1385. am weak

  1386. then I

  1387. am

  1388. strong

  1389. we may

  1390. struggle

  1391. with the

  1392. fear of

  1393. man

  1394. but the

  1395. real

  1396. struggle

  1397. we have

  1398. is with

  1399. God

  1400. the

  1401. God

  1402. who may

  1403. break

  1404. us

  1405. but only

  1406. to bless

  1407. us

  1408. the

  1409. God

  1410. who may

  1411. seem

  1412. against

  1413. us

  1414. but only

  1415. to show

  1416. us that

  1417. when we

  1418. are weak

  1419. then

  1420. we are

  1421. strong

  1422. let's

  1423. pray

  1424. our

  1425. father we

  1426. thank you

  1427. for our

  1428. lord Jesus

  1429. Christ

  1430. above all

  1431. thank you

  1432. that in the

  1433. weakness of the

  1434. cross which

  1435. you willingly

  1436. went to

  1437. your power

  1438. was seen

  1439. supremely to

  1440. save us

  1441. from sin

  1442. and death

  1443. and judgment

  1444. how we

  1445. praise you

  1446. for that

  1447. powerful

  1448. though

  1449. counterintuitive

  1450. logic

  1451. but father we

  1452. pray that you

  1453. would help us

  1454. in our own

  1455. lives

  1456. as we

  1457. struggle

  1458. with so

  1459. many things

  1460. and so

  1461. many people

  1462. but also

  1463. with you

  1464. when you

  1465. seem to turn

  1466. your face

  1467. against us

  1468. lord help us

  1469. to remember

  1470. that you

  1471. are always

  1472. for us

  1473. wanting to

  1474. show that

  1475. in our

  1476. weakness

  1477. your power

  1478. your strength

  1479. is made

  1480. complete

  1481. help us

  1482. to trust

  1483. you

  1484. through the

  1485. hard times

  1486. for Jesus

  1487. sake

  1488. amen

  1489. aby

  1490. with you
