  1. 55. Many women were there, watching from a distance. They had followed Jesus from Galilee

  2. to care for his needs. Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Joseph,

  3. and the mother of Zebedee's sons. As evening approached, there came a rich man from Arimathea

  4. named Joseph, who had himself become a disciple of Jesus. Going to Pilate, he asked for Jesus'

  5. body, and Pilate ordered that it be given to him. Joseph took the body, wrapped it in clean

  6. linen cloth, and placed it in his own new tomb that he had cut out of the rock. He rolled a big stone

  7. in front of the entrance to the tomb, and went away. Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were sitting

  8. there opposite the tomb. The next day, the one after preparation day, the chief priests and the

  9. Pharisees went to Pilate. Sir, they said, we remember that while he was still alive, that deceiver said,

  10. after three days I will rise again. So give the order for the tomb to be made secure until the third day,

  11. otherwise his disciples may come and steal the body and tell the people that he had been raised from the

  12. dead. This last deception will be worse than the first. Take a guard, Pilate answered. Go make the tomb

  13. as secure as you know how. So they went and they made the tomb secure by putting a seal on the stone

  14. and posting the guard. After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, so it's a Sunday morning,

  15. Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb. There was a violent earthquake for an angel

  16. of the Lord came down from heaven and going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it.

  17. His appearance was like lightning and his clothes were white as snow. The guards were so afraid of him

  18. that they shook and became like dead men. The angel said to the woman, do not be afraid,

  19. for I know that you are looking for Jesus who was crucified. He is not here. He has risen,

  20. just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples,

  21. he has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him. Now I have told you.

  22. So the women hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet filled with joy, and ran to tell the disciples.

  23. Suddenly Jesus met them. Greetings, he said. They came to him, clasped his feet, and worshipped him.

  24. Then Jesus said to them, do not be afraid. Go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee. There they will see me.

  25. While the women were on their way, some of the guards went into the city to report to the chief priests

  26. everything that had happened. When the chief priests had met with the elders and devised a plan,

  27. they gave the soldiers a large sum of money, telling them,

  28. you are to say, his disciples came during the night and stole him away while we were asleep.

  29. If this report gets to the governor, we will satisfy him and keep you out of trouble.

  30. So the soldiers took the money and did as they were instructed.

  31. And this story has been widely circulated among the Jews to this very day.

  32. Well, over the month of April, we've been looking together at the Easter account.

  33. That is, the events surrounding the death and the resurrection of Jesus.

  34. We've been looking at his trial, his crucifixion, and last week his death.

  35. And today, we're going to see the resurrection.

  36. And in particular, we're going to look at the resurrection account from the perspective of the women.

  37. Because throughout Matthew's Gospel, and particularly in this instance,

  38. the women play a central role.

  39. So we're going to look at three simple things.

  40. We're going to look at the witness to the resurrection,

  41. the challenge to the resurrection,

  42. and the meaning of the resurrection.

  43. So three things.

  44. Witness, meaning, and challenge.

  45. Here's the first.

  46. The witness to the resurrection.

  47. Now this is really important because Christianity

  48. is built on the foundation of the resurrection.

  49. If there is no risen Jesus, there is no Christianity.

  50. We're simply living a lie.

  51. We might as well all pack our bags right now

  52. and go home because we're wasting our time.

  53. So it's crucial that we know that the resurrection is actually true.

  54. And Matthew's account provides us with the first eyewitnesses to the resurrection.

  55. We're introduced to them in verse 55.

  56. Many women were there watching from a distance.

  57. Verse 56.

  58. Among them were Mary Magdalene,

  59. Mary the mother of James and Joseph,

  60. and the mother of Sebedee's sons.

  61. Now we don't know a lot about them.

  62. We're not given much information,

  63. but we're given a little bit,

  64. which obviously suggests that their identities

  65. are known by the people who first read this account.

  66. They knew who Mary was,

  67. and the other Mary,

  68. and the mother of Zebedee's sons.

  69. And at least two of these women,

  70. the two Marys,

  71. were eyewitnesses to all that had happened.

  72. They're present throughout this account.

  73. Now the fact that Matthew records women

  74. as the first eyewitnesses

  75. is really significant.

  76. Because at that time,

  77. back in the first century,

  78. a woman's testimony

  79. was not considered trustworthy.

  80. In the court of law,

  81. their words were not counted as credible.

  82. You never had a woman stand up and give witness.

  83. It just simply wasn't counted.

  84. So if Matthew was making up a story

  85. of the risen Jesus,

  86. you would never include women in your account.

  87. Because it would be counterintuitive.

  88. It would undermine your purpose

  89. for what you're writing.

  90. The only reason why Matthew would include women

  91. and have as his eyewitnesses

  92. would be if it was true.

  93. So what did these women see

  94. as the first eyewitnesses?

  95. First, they saw Jesus die.

  96. Again, look at verse 55.

  97. Many women were there watching.

  98. Well, what were they watching?

  99. Well, Matthew's just recorded for us

  100. the events surrounding the death of Jesus.

  101. So they were present as Jesus died.

  102. They were witnesses to his beatings,

  103. to his torture,

  104. to his crucifixion.

  105. They saw Jesus' physical body

  106. get weaker and weaker

  107. as he struggled to draw in breath.

  108. They heard his cry of agony

  109. and they saw as he breathed out his last.

  110. Now, lots of people today

  111. will claim that Jesus didn't die.

  112. That while he was on the cross,

  113. he only passed out or he fainted.

  114. Is it true?

  115. Well, let's remember that these soldiers

  116. were experienced,

  117. expert, executioners.

  118. It was their job to ensure people died.

  119. And if people didn't die,

  120. well, more than likely,

  121. they would die themselves.

  122. So there's no reason for us to think

  123. that Jesus did not die.

  124. According to the women who are present

  125. and watching,

  126. well, Jesus died.

  127. And second,

  128. they saw Jesus buried.

  129. Joseph, a disciple of Jesus,

  130. verse 57,

  131. went and asked Pilate

  132. for the body of Jesus.

  133. It was important in Jewish tradition

  134. that the body would be buried

  135. before Sabbath the following day,

  136. before sundown.

  137. So he goes to Pilate

  138. and asks for the body,

  139. verse 59.

  140. Joseph took the body

  141. and wrapped it in clean linen cloth.

  142. So the burial clothes,

  143. wrapped from toe to head

  144. all the way around.

  145. So if there was any notion

  146. of Jesus still being alive,

  147. he would surely be suffocated.

  148. Joseph took the body,

  149. wrapped it in a clean linen cloth,

  150. placed it in his own new tomb,

  151. so people weren't buried underground.

  152. It was a hole in the rock

  153. and inside the rock

  154. they would chisel out

  155. or cut out a shelf

  156. into the rock area.

  157. And then a big stone

  158. was rolled in the front

  159. of the entrance to the tomb

  160. and went away.

  161. And usually they put the stone in front

  162. to stop any wild animals

  163. getting in.

  164. But look who's present.

  165. Matthew gives us this information.

  166. But look who's there.

  167. Verse 61.

  168. Mary Magdalene

  169. and the other Mary

  170. were sitting there

  171. opposite the tomb.

  172. The two Marys

  173. who had witnessed

  174. the death of Jesus

  175. now witness

  176. the burial of Jesus.

  177. They see him being placed

  178. into the tomb

  179. and it all being sealed up.

  180. Third,

  181. they saw Jesus raised.

  182. Chapter 28, verse 1.

  183. After the Sabbath.

  184. So,

  185. Jesus had died

  186. on Friday afternoon,

  187. was buried

  188. before sundown on Friday,

  189. so before 6pm.

  190. he remains in the tomb

  191. all of Saturday,

  192. which is called

  193. the Sabbath.

  194. So,

  195. after the Sabbath,

  196. at dawn,

  197. on the first day of the week,

  198. which would be Sunday,

  199. Mary Magdalene

  200. and the other Mary

  201. went to look

  202. at the tomb.

  203. So,

  204. here we have

  205. the two Marys

  206. again.

  207. And what they witnessed

  208. is incredible,

  209. isn't it?

  210. Earthquakes,

  211. an angel.

  212. Well,

  213. you say,

  214. that's just going

  215. a bit too far now.

  216. I mean,

  217. one thing to claim

  218. a resurrection,

  219. but all this business

  220. of earthquakes

  221. and angels?

  222. Well,

  223. they weren't the only ones

  224. to witness

  225. what was going on,

  226. were they?

  227. Look at verse 4.

  228. The guards,

  229. remember,

  230. there were guards

  231. posted

  232. to keep an eye

  233. in the tomb.

  234. The guards

  235. were so afraid

  236. of him

  237. that they shook.

  238. And literally,

  239. the same word

  240. there for shook

  241. is earthquake.

  242. They had their own

  243. little earthquake

  244. of fear.

  245. And they became

  246. like dead men

  247. as the angel

  248. appeared.

  249. You see,

  250. the guards

  251. back up

  252. what the two Marys

  253. claim to have seen.

  254. Jump down

  255. to verse 11.

  256. While the women

  257. were on their way,

  258. some of the guards

  259. went into the city

  260. and reported

  261. to the chief

  262. priests

  263. everything

  264. that had happened.

  265. So,

  266. it wasn't just

  267. the women,

  268. but the guards

  269. also.

  270. This is no

  271. made-up story.

  272. Let's go back

  273. to the women.

  274. Seeing that

  275. there was no body

  276. in the tomb,

  277. the angel

  278. had said,

  279. come and see

  280. where he lay.

  281. No body there.

  282. The angel

  283. then commands

  284. them to go

  285. and tell

  286. the disciples.

  287. Let's pick it up

  288. in verse 8.

  289. So,

  290. the women

  291. hurried away

  292. from the tomb,

  293. afraid,

  294. yet filled

  295. with joy,

  296. and ran

  297. to tell

  298. his disciples.

  299. Suddenly,

  300. Jesus met

  301. them.

  302. Greetings!

  303. Now,

  304. it's a funny

  305. phrase,

  306. this greetings.

  307. It's not how

  308. we kind of,

  309. when we meet

  310. people,

  311. say,

  312. we say,

  313. hi,

  314. hello,

  315. or if Jesus

  316. were from Cork,

  317. he'd probably

  318. say,

  319. how's it going?

  320. It's just a

  321. really natural,

  322. normal,

  323. kind of like,

  324. what are you

  325. so surprised at?

  326. How are you

  327. doing?

  328. Why are you

  329. surprised?

  330. And they

  331. came to him,

  332. verse 9,

  333. and clasped

  334. his feet

  335. and worshipped

  336. him.

  337. Now,

  338. some say,

  339. again,

  340. that they got

  341. over-emotional

  342. and excited,

  343. that the

  344. women didn't

  345. really see

  346. Jesus,

  347. it was just

  348. a vision

  349. or something

  350. like that.

  351. But this is

  352. no vision.

  353. This is the

  354. physical,

  355. bodily

  356. resurrection

  357. of Jesus.

  358. They grasp

  359. a hold of

  360. his feet,

  361. they actually

  362. hold and

  363. touch a

  364. physical body,

  365. the real

  366. Jesus.

  367. And in

  368. visions,

  369. or anything

  370. else,

  371. that doesn't

  372. happen,

  373. you can't

  374. grasp,

  375. you can't

  376. hold on

  377. to.

  378. So,

  379. Matthew is

  380. very,

  381. very clear

  382. to record

  383. the first

  384. eyewitnesses

  385. of the

  386. resurrection.

  387. The women's

  388. testimony

  389. provides

  390. evidence

  391. and

  392. continuity.

  393. They were

  394. present at

  395. his death,

  396. at his

  397. burial,

  398. and

  399. resurrection.

  400. They see,

  401. hear,

  402. and touch

  403. the risen

  404. Jesus.

  405. Jesus.

  406. So,

  407. there's

  408. nothing in

  409. this account

  410. that suggests

  411. that we

  412. should not

  413. believe that

  414. this is

  415. true.

  416. So,

  417. we have

  418. the witness

  419. to the

  420. resurrection.

  421. Second,

  422. the meaning

  423. of the

  424. resurrection.

  425. If this is

  426. all true,

  427. if this is a

  428. historical

  429. fact,

  430. that Jesus

  431. died,

  432. was buried,

  433. and rose

  434. again,

  435. what does

  436. it all

  437. mean?

  438. What difference

  439. does that

  440. make to

  441. you and

  442. me?

  443. Well,

  444. four things

  445. I think

  446. the resurrection

  447. teaches us

  448. here.

  449. Here's the

  450. first.

  451. God does

  452. something

  453. for you.

  454. Now,

  455. most of the

  456. time we

  457. think of

  458. Christianity

  459. like this,

  460. that we

  461. do something

  462. for God,

  463. and God

  464. does something

  465. for me.

  466. We come

  467. to church

  468. like this,

  469. we do

  470. something for

  471. God,

  472. in the hope

  473. that,

  474. well,

  475. we've done

  476. this,

  477. now he's

  478. going to

  479. bless me,

  480. he's going

  481. to do

  482. something

  483. for me.

  484. It's

  485. transactional.

  486. But what

  487. the resurrection

  488. shows us

  489. is,

  490. is that

  491. God

  492. has come

  493. to do

  494. something

  495. for us.

  496. Everything

  497. that happens

  498. tells us

  499. that this

  500. is a

  501. God

  502. intervention.

  503. This is

  504. God's

  505. initiative.

  506. Look at

  507. chapter 28,

  508. verse 2.

  509. There was

  510. a violent

  511. earthquake,

  512. for an

  513. angel of

  514. the Lord

  515. came down

  516. from heaven

  517. and going

  518. to the

  519. tomb,

  520. rolled back

  521. the stone

  522. and sat

  523. on it.

  524. Now,

  525. these aren't

  526. your normal

  527. everyday

  528. today events,

  529. are they?

  530. These things

  531. only happen

  532. when God

  533. is intervening

  534. and God

  535. has something

  536. to tell us.

  537. Angels have

  538. already shown

  539. up in

  540. Matthew.

  541. Do you

  542. remember

  543. right back

  544. at the

  545. very

  546. beginning

  547. when God

  548. intervened

  549. and told

  550. Mary,

  551. you're going

  552. to have

  553. a son

  554. and his

  555. name will

  556. be called

  557. Jesus,

  558. Emmanuel,

  559. God

  560. with us.

  561. It took

  562. an angel,

  563. an intervention

  564. to tell

  565. something

  566. really important.

  567. so God

  568. comes again

  569. through the

  570. angel

  571. and he's

  572. saying to

  573. us,

  574. I have

  575. come

  576. to do

  577. something

  578. for you.

  579. You see,

  580. the story

  581. of Christianity

  582. is not

  583. about what

  584. you can

  585. do for

  586. God,

  587. but it's

  588. all about

  589. what God

  590. has done

  591. for you.

  592. It's a

  593. story of

  594. grace.

  595. It's not

  596. about our

  597. efforts or

  598. our works,

  599. but the

  600. wonderful story

  601. of God's

  602. intervention

  603. into our

  604. lives.

  605. So what

  606. has God

  607. done for

  608. you?

  609. Well,

  610. first,

  611. God

  612. fulfills

  613. our need

  614. in the

  615. risen

  616. Jesus.

  617. God

  618. fulfills

  619. our need

  620. in the

  621. risen

  622. Jesus.

  623. Verse 5,

  624. the angel

  625. said to

  626. the woman,

  627. to these

  628. two

  629. Marys,

  630. do not

  631. be afraid,

  632. for I

  633. know that

  634. you are

  635. looking for

  636. Jesus,

  637. who was

  638. crucified.

  639. Jesus,

  640. the women

  641. are looking

  642. for Jesus,

  643. but they're

  644. looking for

  645. a crucified

  646. Jesus.

  647. They're

  648. coming to

  649. remember a

  650. dead

  651. Jesus.

  652. The best

  653. that they

  654. can hope

  655. for as

  656. they arrive

  657. at the

  658. tomb is

  659. to somehow

  660. keep his

  661. memory

  662. alive,

  663. reminders of

  664. things he

  665. had said

  666. and did

  667. and how

  668. they had

  669. served him.

  670. But now,

  671. instead of

  672. grieving over

  673. a dead

  674. Jesus,

  675. they received

  676. news of

  677. a living

  678. Jesus.

  679. Verse 6,

  680. he is not

  681. here.

  682. He has

  683. risen.

  684. Now,

  685. let's think

  686. about that

  687. for a

  688. minute.

  689. You see,

  690. our problem

  691. is,

  692. our

  693. expectations

  694. are not

  695. high enough.

  696. They're

  697. far too

  698. low.

  699. The women

  700. never expected

  701. a risen

  702. Jesus.

  703. their

  704. expectations

  705. weren't

  706. high enough.

  707. They were

  708. too low.

  709. You see,

  710. unlike them

  711. in some

  712. ways,

  713. we invest

  714. in things

  715. and people.

  716. But the

  717. problem is,

  718. death comes

  719. along and

  720. destroys our

  721. dreams and

  722. steals away

  723. the people

  724. that we

  725. love.

  726. We say to

  727. ourselves as

  728. we invest

  729. in things,

  730. if only I

  731. could have,

  732. what would

  733. you have?

  734. If only I

  735. could have

  736. a mortgage

  737. free house.

  738. Is that

  739. what you

  740. hope for

  741. today?

  742. Or are you

  743. hoping for

  744. better health?

  745. Or maybe

  746. you're just

  747. looking for

  748. that true

  749. and special

  750. friend.

  751. Maybe life

  752. is hectic

  753. and the one

  754. thing you

  755. want is

  756. more time,

  757. more time

  758. to me.

  759. if I

  760. had,

  761. now you

  762. fill in the

  763. blank,

  764. what you

  765. want this

  766. morning,

  767. then if I

  768. had it,

  769. my life

  770. would be

  771. content.

  772. But here's

  773. the problem,

  774. death

  775. ruins

  776. everything.

  777. We either

  778. die or

  779. those we

  780. love die.

  781. And the

  782. things that

  783. we long

  784. for don't

  785. last.

  786. You see,

  787. we set

  788. our expectations

  789. too low.

  790. But there

  791. is someone

  792. who is

  793. better and

  794. greater,

  795. who will

  796. fulfil our

  797. needs.

  798. Rather than

  799. a dead

  800. Jesus,

  801. we're given

  802. a risen

  803. and living

  804. Jesus.

  805. One who's

  806. never going

  807. to disappoint

  808. you,

  809. and one

  810. who's never

  811. ever going

  812. to leave

  813. you.

  814. He can't

  815. be taken

  816. from you,

  817. and you

  818. can't be

  819. taken from

  820. him.

  821. Jesus

  822. will forever

  823. meet us

  824. in our

  825. needs.

  826. well,

  827. how can

  828. we be

  829. so sure?

  830. Well,

  831. we must

  832. believe his

  833. promise.

  834. Look what

  835. the angel

  836. said in

  837. verse 6.

  838. He's not

  839. here,

  840. he has

  841. risen,

  842. just as

  843. he said.

  844. Three times

  845. Matthew records

  846. for us that

  847. Jesus specifically

  848. told them that

  849. he was going

  850. to die

  851. and suffer

  852. and on the

  853. third day

  854. rise again.

  855. Three times.

  856. The women

  857. heard it,

  858. but they

  859. never believed

  860. his words.

  861. And now

  862. as the angel

  863. comes to

  864. him and

  865. says,

  866. he's risen,

  867. he's not

  868. here,

  869. just as

  870. he said,

  871. it all

  872. begins to

  873. click and

  874. make sense.

  875. His words

  876. are true.

  877. I can

  878. trust what

  879. he says.

  880. Jesus

  881. does what

  882. he says.

  883. He will

  884. not fail

  885. you or

  886. forsake you.

  887. He will

  888. provide

  889. sufficient

  890. grace in

  891. your

  892. weakness.

  893. He will

  894. strengthen

  895. you in

  896. every

  897. crisis.

  898. He will

  899. fill you

  900. with peace

  901. in every

  902. anxiety.

  903. He will

  904. comfort you

  905. in your

  906. grief.

  907. He will

  908. be your

  909. rock in

  910. every fear.

  911. He will

  912. be your

  913. joy in

  914. your

  915. suffering.

  916. He will

  917. be your

  918. hope in

  919. death.

  920. He will

  921. fulfill

  922. your need

  923. today,

  924. tomorrow,

  925. and into

  926. the future.

  927. Never

  928. settle for

  929. anything less.

  930. Don't have

  931. your

  932. expectations

  933. down here

  934. in things

  935. and people.

  936. Set your

  937. expectations

  938. in the

  939. risen,

  940. living

  941. Jesus

  942. who has

  943. conquered

  944. death.

  945. So what

  946. has God

  947. done for

  948. you?

  949. He

  950. fulfills

  951. your every

  952. need in

  953. the risen

  954. Jesus.

  955. Second,

  956. he secures

  957. your future

  958. in the

  959. risen

  960. Jesus.

  961. Listen to

  962. what God

  963. said to

  964. the angel.

  965. Verse

  966. 7.

  967. Then go

  968. quickly,

  969. tell his

  970. disciples,

  971. he has

  972. risen from

  973. the dead

  974. and is

  975. going ahead

  976. of you

  977. into

  978. Galilee.

  979. There

  980. you will

  981. see him.

  982. Again,

  983. another

  984. promise.

  985. Jesus

  986. is risen,

  987. go,

  988. you will

  989. see him.

  990. Can they

  991. trust the

  992. promise?

  993. Well,

  994. again,

  995. look at

  996. verse 8.

  997. The women

  998. hurried

  999. away from

  1000. the tomb,

  1001. afraid,

  1002. yet filled

  1003. with joy,

  1004. and ran

  1005. to tell

  1006. his disciples.

  1007. Suddenly,

  1008. Jesus

  1009. met them.

  1010. Greetings.

  1011. They

  1012. came to

  1013. him,

  1014. glass,

  1015. clasped

  1016. his feet,

  1017. and worshipped

  1018. him.

  1019. Now,

  1020. what happens

  1021. at that

  1022. moment?

  1023. What the

  1024. women heard

  1025. and experienced

  1026. as they

  1027. heard the

  1028. angel's

  1029. voice,

  1030. and as

  1031. they saw

  1032. and touched

  1033. the risen

  1034. Jesus,

  1035. shows us

  1036. what we

  1037. too can

  1038. expect.

  1039. You see,

  1040. God is

  1041. telling us

  1042. the same

  1043. thing.

  1044. Jesus

  1045. has gone

  1046. ahead of

  1047. you.

  1048. He has

  1049. died,

  1050. he is

  1051. risen,

  1052. and you

  1053. will see

  1054. him.

  1055. It's what

  1056. gives us

  1057. sure and

  1058. certain hope.

  1059. The same

  1060. words that

  1061. are spoken

  1062. to the

  1063. women are

  1064. spoken to

  1065. us today.

  1066. He's gone

  1067. ahead of

  1068. you.

  1069. He's

  1070. risen.

  1071. You

  1072. will see

  1073. him.

  1074. How do

  1075. we know?

  1076. Well,

  1077. have a

  1078. look at

  1079. 1 Peter

  1080. with me

  1081. in your

  1082. Bibles.

  1083. 1 Peter.

  1084. Somebody's

  1085. got a

  1086. page number.

  1087. I'm

  1088. sorry I

  1089. haven't

  1090. been

  1091. prepared

  1092. there and

  1093. got it

  1094. ready.

  1095. 1 Peter

    1 Peter 1 chapter mention

  1096. chapter 1,

  1097. if anyone

  1098. has it.

  1099. 1

  1100. 1

  1101. 1

  1102. 2

  1103. 1

  1104. 1

  1105. 1

    1 Peter 1 chapter mention

  1106. Peter

  1107. chapter 1.

  1108. Here the

  1109. New Testament

  1110. authors

  1111. explain

  1112. for us

  1113. what the

  1114. resurrection

  1115. means,

  1116. how they

  1117. understood

  1118. Jesus'

  1119. promises

  1120. of great

  1121. hope.

  1122. Let's

  1123. read it.

  1124. 1 Peter

    1 Peter 1:3

  1125. chapter 1

  1126. verse 3.

1127. praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ

  1128. in his great mercy

1129. he has given us new birth

  1130. into a living hope

1131. through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead

  1132. and look

  1133. and into an inheritance

  1134. that can never perish

  1135. spoil or fade

1136. this inheritance is kept in heaven

  1137. for you

  1138. who through faith

1139. are shielded by God's power

1140. until the coming of the salvation

  1141. let's go back to chapter 28

  1142. Matthew

1143. you see the resurrection of Jesus secures our future

1144. did you see what it said

1145. we are kept for heaven

1146. and heaven is kept for us

  1147. a double security

1148. by faith in the promises of Jesus

1149. his life becomes our life

  1150. where Jesus is gone

  1151. we will follow

1152. Jesus is risen from the dead

1153. he's gone ahead of you

  1154. you will see him

1155. that will be true for you and for me

1156. as we trust in him

  1157. our death

  1158. is not the end

1159. it is only a step

  1160. through the door

  1161. into his eternal kingdom

  1162. forever and forever

1163. so he fulfills our need

  1164. he secures our future

  1165. and he gives us

  1166. a purpose

1167. listen to what Jesus says

  1168. to the women

  1169. verse 10

  1170. Jesus said to them

  1171. do not be afraid

1172. go and tell my brothers

  1173. to go to Galilee

1174. there they will see me

1175. the women have been commissioned

1176. with the greatest news ever

  1177. go tell the disciples

  1178. they think I'm dead

1179. they don't think I'm going to rise

  1180. but go tell them

1181. that they're going to see me

1182. tell them that I've been raised

  1183. from the dead

  1184. tell them that God

1185. has done something for you

1186. that he fulfills your need

  1187. and secures your future

  1188. you see rather than

1189. their serving coming to an end

  1190. they've been given a new purpose

  1191. in life

1192. to announce the sure and certain

  1193. hope of the resurrection

1194. you see all of us here today

1195. so desperately want our lives

  1196. to matter

1197. we want what we do

  1198. to count

  1199. that somehow

  1200. when I die

1201. that what I gave my life to

  1202. will mean something

1203. that we want to leave

  1204. our children

  1205. an inheritance

1206. or we want to be known to

1207. everybody as a good neighbour

1208. we want to leave the world

  1209. a better place

  1210. fairer

  1211. and more equal

1212. and it's all very noble

  1213. to want these things

  1214. but the problem is

  1215. within a few years

  1216. of our death

1217. our life will be forgotten

  1218. who we are

  1219. and what we do

  1220. will not be remembered

  1221. we will be replaced

  1222. by someone else

  1223. or something else

  1224. and in fact

  1225. the Bible tells us

  1226. this world

1227. that we live in today

1228. is all going to come

  1229. to an end

  1230. but the risen Jesus

1231. comes and he gives us

  1232. a new purpose

  1233. he calls us

  1234. to invest

  1235. our life

  1236. in his resurrection

  1237. to tell the story

  1238. of the resurrection

  1239. because what God

  1240. has done in Jesus

  1241. has an eternal effect

  1242. it lasts forever

  1243. and forever

1244. our life is not about

  1245. becoming the best person

  1246. or the best anything

  1247. the greatest legacy

  1248. that we could ever

  1249. leave our family

  1250. the greatest thing

  1251. we could ever do

  1252. for our neighbour

1253. anything that we could do

1254. is to share the certain hope

  1255. of the resurrection

1256. and that's what the women

1257. have been called to do

1258. and if we are Christians today

  1259. this is our purpose

1260. as we go to work

1261. as we go about our life

  1262. to declare and proclaim

  1263. that Jesus

  1264. is risen

  1265. so the resurrection

  1266. tells us

  1267. that God has done

  1268. something for you

  1269. he fulfills

  1270. your needs

  1271. he secures

  1272. your future

  1273. and he gives you

  1274. a purpose

1275. so we look at the witness

1276. we've looked at the meaning

  1277. but what about

  1278. this whole business

  1279. of the religious leaders

  1280. and the guards

  1281. that we read about

  1282. in the text

  1283. because it seems like

  1284. that some people

  1285. just don't want

  1286. the resurrection

  1287. to be true

1288. look at the religious leaders

  1289. here with me

  1290. they remember

  1291. what Jesus had said

  1292. before his death

1293. of course they don't believe it

  1294. they're just really concerned

  1295. of what might happen

1296. if the body of Jesus

  1297. goes missing

1298. so they go to Pilate

  1299. don't they

  1300. look at verse 63

  1301. chapter 27

  1302. verse 63

  1303. so they said

  1304. we remember

  1305. that while Jesus

  1306. was still alive

  1307. that deceiver said

  1308. after three days

  1309. I will rise again

  1310. so give the order

  1311. for the tomb

  1312. to be made secure

  1313. until the third day

  1314. otherwise

  1315. his disciples

  1316. may come

  1317. steal the body

  1318. and tell the people

  1319. that he's been raised

  1320. from the dead

  1321. this deception

  1322. will be the worst

  1323. than the first

  1324. so Pilate

  1325. gives the orders

  1326. he sends some guards

  1327. there's more than

  1328. one guard here

  1329. he sends their guard

  1330. they seal up

  1331. the tomb

1332. as best that they can

  1333. everybody's in

  1334. place

  1335. case closed

  1336. there can be no

  1337. resurrection story

  1338. but what happens

  1339. Jesus does rise

  1340. and the guards

  1341. as we saw

  1342. in chapter 28

  1343. verse 4

  1344. are witnesses

  1345. to the fact

  1346. that it did happen

1347. and what do they do

  1348. look at verse 11

  1349. while the women

  1350. were on their way

  1351. some of the guards

  1352. went into the city

  1353. and reported

  1354. to the chief

  1355. priest

  1356. everything that

  1357. had happened

  1358. you wouldn't

  1359. believe it

  1360. we were on guard

  1361. and an angel

  1362. appeared

  1363. and he rolled

  1364. back this tomb

  1365. and the body

  1366. there was no body

  1367. verse 12

  1368. when the chief

  1369. priests

  1370. had met

  1371. with the elders

  1372. and devised a plan

  1373. because they

  1374. couldn't have

  1375. arisen Jesus

  1376. could they

  1377. they gave

  1378. the soldiers

  1379. a large sum

  1380. of money

  1381. telling them

  1382. you are to say

  1383. his disciples

  1384. came during

  1385. the night

  1386. and stole

  1387. him away

  1388. while we

  1389. were asleep

  1390. the thing is

  1391. they know

  1392. it's true

  1393. so why do

  1394. they tell

  1395. the lies

  1396. why the

  1397. cover up

  1398. why bribe

  1399. the soldiers

  1400. who are

  1401. witnesses

  1402. why do

  1403. the religious

  1404. leaders

  1405. not want

  1406. the resurrection

  1407. to be true

  1408. and why is it

  1409. today

  1410. that people

  1411. do not want

  1412. the resurrection

  1413. to be true

  1414. why do people

  1415. come up with

  1416. all crazy ideas

  1417. he didn't die

  1418. they went to

  1419. the wrong tomb

  1420. the body

  1421. was stolen

  1422. no it wasn't

  1423. stolen

  1424. they made it

  1425. up

  1426. why do people

  1427. not want the

  1428. resurrection

  1429. to be true

  1430. well let me

  1431. give you one

  1432. reason

  1433. Jesus is

  1434. God

  1435. do you see

  1436. what it says

  1437. at the end

  1438. of verse

  1439. 64

  1440. they said

  1441. the last

  1442. deception

  1443. will be worse

  1444. than the first

  1445. Jesus'

  1446. claim

  1447. all through

  1448. his ministry

  1449. was that

  1450. he was

  1451. God

  1452. that he was

  1453. God's

  1454. Messiah

  1455. God

  1456. man

  1457. and they

  1458. can't cope

  1459. with that

  1460. they can't

  1461. cope

  1462. that Jesus

  1463. is God

  1464. so if the

  1465. resurrection

  1466. is true

  1467. it proves

  1468. that what

  1469. Jesus claimed

  1470. about himself

  1471. is true

  1472. that he is

  1473. God

  1474. his resurrection

  1475. proves

  1476. that he's the

  1477. son of God

  1478. with absolute

  1479. power

  1480. and supreme

  1481. authority

  1482. and we

  1483. struggle

  1484. with that

  1485. just as the

  1486. religious leaders

  1487. does

  1488. because it

  1489. challenges

  1490. our desire

  1491. to rule

  1492. our own

  1493. lives

  1494. you see

  1495. we prefer

  1496. a dead

  1497. Jesus

  1498. who has

  1499. no claim

  1500. over our

  1501. life

  1502. than a

  1503. living

  1504. Jesus

  1505. who commands

  1506. our devotion

  1507. and allegiance

  1508. we much

  1509. prefer a

  1510. dead

  1511. Jesus

  1512. that has

  1513. no claim

  1514. over our

  1515. life

  1516. than a

  1517. living

  1518. Jesus

  1519. who commands

  1520. our devotion

  1521. and allegiance

  1522. you see

  1523. if the

  1524. resurrection

  1525. is true

  1526. then it

  1527. confronts

  1528. our challenge

  1529. it confronts

  1530. us and

  1531. challenges

  1532. us

  1533. over our

  1534. desire

  1535. to rule

  1536. my

  1537. life

  1538. that's

  1539. why people

  1540. don't want

  1541. the resurrection

  1542. to be true

  1543. in contrast

  1544. look at the

  1545. women

  1546. verse 9

  1547. suddenly

  1548. Jesus

  1549. met them

  1550. and they

  1551. clasped

  1552. his feet

  1553. and worshipped

  1554. him

  1555. their actions

  1556. reflect

  1557. what's in

  1558. their heart

  1559. they bow

  1560. before

  1561. Jesus

  1562. they grasp

  1563. his feet

  1564. it's an

  1565. action of

  1566. worship

  1567. it's both

  1568. one of

  1569. submission

  1570. they are

  1571. saying to

  1572. Jesus

  1573. all my

  1574. life belongs

  1575. to you

  1576. and one

  1577. of devotion

  1578. I will

  1579. love you

  1580. above all

  1581. else

  1582. I'll give

  1583. my life

  1584. to you

  1585. and I

  1586. will love

  1587. you

  1588. submission

  1589. and devotion

  1590. the

  1591. resurrection

  1592. proves

  1593. Jesus

  1594. is God

  1595. and they

  1596. worship

  1597. him

  1598. the challenge

  1599. to us

  1600. is

  1601. do we

  1602. worship

  1603. the risen

  1604. Jesus

  1605. do we

  1606. submit to

  1607. him

  1608. do we

  1609. devote our

  1610. lives to

  1611. him

  1612. do we

  1613. bow before

  1614. him and

  1615. say

  1616. my life

  1617. is yours

  1618. I will

  1619. love you

  1620. above all

  1621. else

  1622. he's the

  1623. risen one

  1624. let's

  1625. worship

  1626. let's pray

  1627. our father

  1628. god we

  1629. thank you

  1630. for this

  1631. account in

  1632. matthew

  1633. this true

  1634. story

  1635. this true

  1636. event

  1637. of jesus

  1638. risen from

  1639. the dead

  1640. fulfilling

  1641. our needs

  1642. securing

  1643. our future

  1644. giving us

  1645. life today

  1646. purpose

  1647. and meaning

  1648. thank you

  1649. for all

  1650. that you

  1651. have done

  1652. and we

  1653. pray

  1654. and ask

  1655. that we

  1656. would be

  1657. a people

  1658. who worship

  1659. you

  1660. with all

  1661. of our

  1662. life

  1663. in jesus

  1664. name

  1665. amen

  1666. we're going

  1667. to sing

  1668. together

  1669. for some

  1670. people it

  1671. might be

  1672. new

  1673. what is

  1674. our hope

  1675. in life

  1676. and death

  1677. christ

  1678. alone

  1679. christ

  1680. alone

  1681. let's

  1682. stand

  1683. together

  1684. as we

  1685. sing

  1686. to

  1687. hear

  1688. Thank you.
