  1. Jason, do you want to come up?

  2. Come a bit closer and you'll just have to speak up.

  3. Hopefully he'll get there.

  4. Sounds good.

  5. Well, just to give you all a warm welcome again,

  6. it's great to have you with us today.

  7. And if you're visiting, a special welcome

  8. and a reminder to all of our tea and coffee time afterwards

  9. where we can catch up with one another.

  10. Two visitors we have today is Jason and Krista who's here.

  11. So I'm just going to ask a little bit.

  12. Jason's going to be preaching this morning

  13. and he comes from the U.S.

  14. and he's part of a partner church in Minnesota.

  15. So Jason, you're here with Krista.

  16. Tell us a little bit about your family back home.

  17. Yeah, so Krista, my wife, and then myself.

  18. And then we have two little ones right now.

  19. A three-year-old who's a lot of fun

  20. and then a one-and-a-half-year-old that's wandering around

  21. and super smiley.

  22. And then we're expecting a third in September.

  23. And that one's a boy.

  24. So I have two girls and there's a boy coming.

  25. We're getting ready.

  26. Good.

  27. So tell us, how did you become a follower of Christ?

  28. Did you grow up in a home where you were taught

  29. or was it through some other means?

  30. Yep, I grew up in a home where my parents were believers.

  31. And so I heard the gospel.

  32. And actually my dad was in ministry.

  33. He worked for a camp.

  34. And so I actually heard the gospel from speakers,

  35. all sorts of different kinds of speakers coming in,

  36. preaching the gospel.

  37. And it was through that.

  38. I didn't believe until I was probably 13

  39. that I placed my faith in Jesus.

  40. But it was primarily through my parents.

  41. Okay.

  42. And now we'll find out a bit more about what you do.

  43. But you're now working in Redeemer Bible Church in Minnesota.

  44. It's a little bit different than this, but it's the same.

  45. So what's different and what's the same?

  46. Yeah, well, very like-minded.

  47. You know, our services would be very similar.

  48. The songs we sing would be the same songs.

  49. In fact, I was just talking to Jonathan.

  50. The gospel project is what we use for our Sunday school as well.

  51. And so it would be very similar.

  52. Our difference would mainly probably be that we have a building.

  53. And that's mainly the only difference, probably.

  54. That's good.

  55. So you're followers of Jesus Christ.

  56. Yes.

  57. That's good to know.

  58. Yeah.

  59. And like-minded, yes, followers of Jesus Christ.

  60. Like-minded, expository preaching.

  61. We'd be preaching through Exodus right now.

  62. Okay.

  63. Very good.

  64. And what do you do at Redeemer?

  65. What's your role?

  66. Yeah, so I'm a pastor.

  67. That's my role.

  68. Okay.

  69. And in any particular area?

  70. You said that I shouldn't talk about my role.

  71. You can keep going.

  72. I'm a pastor.

  73. No.

  74. Yeah, I serve primarily with youth, so teens.

  75. And then I'm the pastor.

  76. I oversee administration for the whole church.

  77. And a lot of that I delegate.

  78. Okay.

  79. Yeah.

  80. Thanks.

  81. So Jason will be speaking in just a moment.

  82. Before he comes to do that, we're going to read from Matthew's Gospel, Chapter 18, following

  83. on in our series together.

  84. So Matthew, Chapter 18.

    Matthew 18 chapter mention

  85. And we're going to read the first 14 verses of Matthew 18.

  86. Amen.

  87. Gouge it out and throw it away.

  88. It is better for you to enter life with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into the fire of hell.

  89. It's happier than the one sheep and about the 99 that did not wander off.

  90. In the same way, your Father in heaven is not willing that any of these little ones should perish.

  91. I'm going to pray and then Jason is going to come and speak.

  92. Let's pray.

  93. Amen.

  94. Amen.

  95. Amen.

  96. Father God, we thank you for the gathering of this church here.

  97. And we thank you for our partner church at Redeemer as they gather later on today.

  98. As we pray for your blessing and your Holy Spirit to be at work among us, we pray the same for our brothers and sisters there in Redeemer.

  99. Amen.

  100. And we ask for your special help to Jason and to us that we may learn from your word and may come to love Jesus more.

  101. So teach us, Father, be gracious to us, build us up and bless.

  102. For it's in your name we pray all these things.

  103. Amen.

  104. Well, it has been great to be with you.

  105. And we've had a wonderful time since coming in on Wednesday and going to home group, Krista visiting Polo,

  106. and then the time with the Senior Rock and Rooted on Friday night was glorious.

  107. And then I've enjoyed all the conversations, meeting many of you and having a chance to fellowship in the gospel.

  108. And our hearts are full.

  109. And I want to thank Johnny and the other elders for giving me the opportunity to open God's word with you from Matthew 18.

  110. Matthew 18.

  111. I remember hearing a conversation of a son with his dad.

  112. And the conversation led to a question where the son asked the dad,

  113. when did you realize you were normal and wouldn't do anything great?

  114. Well, first I thought, man, I can't wait for the day that my kids ask me those great questions.

  115. But also the son makes assumptions that often we have also about greatness.

  116. Whether it's assumptions about status or accomplishments or self-reliance or power or wealth.

  117. Yet greatness is something we all desire.

  118. And in the eyes of the world, there are very few that actually find it.

  119. Our text this morning lays out something of a roundabout,

  120. which the big roundabouts here still scare me to death when we go around them.

  121. But it's something of a 180 or a reversal on what we would instinctively think

  122. in our natural selves about greatness.

  123. Jesus doesn't rebuke the disciples for their desire for greatness.

  124. But instead, what he does is he redirects it by picturing what kingdom life is like.

  125. Or what true greatness before God actually is.

  126. And so that's what I want to consider this morning.

  127. An upside down kingdom.

  128. An upside down from what the world out there assumes about greatness.

  129. Jesus is going to correct that.

  130. He's going to correct kind of the son's assumption in his question to his dad.

  131. And assumptions that we often think.

  132. So I think everyone's there.

  133. Matthew 18.

  134. If you're not there, I invite you to find it again in your Bibles.

  135. We're going to look at the first 14 verses.

  136. So let's read verse 1 again and then consider the context.

  137. At that time, the disciples came to Jesus and asked,

  138. Who then is the greatest in the kingdom?

  139. So here we have Jesus and what we would probably think is the 12, the 12 disciples,

  140. asking about kingdom greatness.

  141. What is it like?

  142. Who is the greatest?

  143. And I think it's important for us to consider first,

  144. how do we think about this question in its context?

  145. We know from parallel Gospels, other Gospels,

  146. that Jesus has addressed this in some form before.

  147. If you remember Mark 9,

  148. he overhears the disciples arguing amongst themselves.

  149. And he asks them,

  150. What are you arguing about?

  151. And like any good children, they don't say anything.

  152. They're silent.

  153. And then he goes on to teach about what greatness is in the kingdom.

  154. Now, in our passage, I don't think this question comes out of nowhere.

  155. And I think it flows out of the context.

  156. So if you flip over a page or so to Matthew 16,

  157. and then you look down at verses 13 through 16.

  158. So let's read those.

  159. When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi,

  160. he asked the disciples,

  161. Who do people say that the Son of Man is?

  162. They replied,

  163. Some say John the Baptist,

  164. others say Elijah,

  165. still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.

  166. But what about you?

  167. He asked.

  168. Who do you say that I am?

  169. And Simon Peter answered,

  170. You are the Messiah,

  171. the Son of the living God.

  172. So here we have Peter's confession,

  173. which I think you looked at last week.

  174. Peter represents the disciples' emerging understanding about who Jesus is,

  175. but they're not quite there.

  176. In fact, Acts 1, 6,

  177. even after Jesus rose from the dead,

  178. they still have a little bit of confusion about the kingdom.

  179. They ask,

  180. Lord, at this time,

  181. are you going to restore the kingdom?

  182. So in their minds,

  183. they're thinking more political

  184. than necessarily the spiritual aspect of the kingdom

  185. that we are in today.

  186. So they're still emerging into that idea.

  187. And Jesus' prediction of his death confuses them,

  188. both in chapter 16 and in chapter 17.

  189. The next few verses are going to seem to put Peter

  190. in kind of an elevated place.

  191. Look at what he says in verse 17 and 18.

  192. He says,

  193. Jesus replied,

  194. Blessed are you,

  195. Simon, son of Jonah,

  196. for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood,

  197. but by my Father in heaven.

  198. And I tell you, Peter,

  199. you are Peter,

  200. and on this rock I will build my church.

  201. The gates of Hades will not overcome it.

  202. So you can understand the question.

  203. Who do you think is the greatest in the kingdom?

  204. If here he is addressing Peter in this way,

  205. it seems to think Peter is the greatest.

  206. And at the beginning of chapter 17,

  207. we have the transfiguration,

  208. which takes up three disciples,

  209. which maybe perhaps is the inner ring.

  210. Look there, it says,

  211. Jesus took with him, verse 1,

  212. Peter, James, and John,

  213. the brother of James.

  214. And so there seems to be this inner ring

  215. that Jesus takes on,

  216. this great experience,

  217. on the mountain,

  218. the transfiguration.

  219. So then you come back to our passage,

  220. and that's where we have the question,

  221. who then is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?

  222. So what I want us to see this morning

  223. is how Jesus answers this question.

  224. But before we do that,

  225. we should consider what he does

  226. in verses 2 and 3.

  227. And that is,

  228. verse 2,

  229. he called,

  230. so our chapter again,

  231. Matthew 18,

    Matthew 18:2

  232. verse 2,

  233. he called a little child to him.

  234. You can kind of picture it,

  235. and he placed the child among them,

  236. in the middle of all of them.

  237. So Jesus places this child,

  238. and then he says something

  239. that is truly unexpected,

  240. verse 3.

  241. And he said,

  242. truly I tell you,

  243. unless you change

  244. and become like this little child,

  245. you will never enter

  246. the kingdom of heaven.

  247. See what Jesus does?

  248. He says,

  249. this is really important

  250. for you to get.

  251. Consider what I'm going to say.

  252. And Jesus starts with entering,

  253. with the beginning.

  254. It's almost as if he says,

  255. you're thinking about the kingdom

  256. as entirely wrong,

  257. you haven't got it yet.

  258. To even enter the kingdom,

  259. you need to humble yourself,

  260. become like a child.

  261. Why?

  262. Because without this humility,

  263. you will never enter it.

  264. Which is a very negative way to say it.

  265. He uses a strong,

  266. the strongest way,

  267. never enter the kingdom.

  268. He says,

  269. only the humble find their way

  270. into the kingdom.

  271. You see,

  272. the disciples wanted to be

  273. the greatest in the kingdom.

  274. Jesus,

  275. on the other hand,

  276. wants them to consider

  277. if they're in the kingdom

  278. at all.

  279. It's like,

  280. you know,

  281. in a sport,

  282. you wondering

  283. if you made the all-star team.

  284. And the coach is really concerned

  285. whether or not

  286. you're even on the team,

  287. you made the team at all.

  288. That's what Jesus does here.

  289. And he says,

  290. consider this

  291. unless you change.

  292. Now,

  293. the word change

  294. has the idea

  295. of turning away.

  296. Maybe not the way

  297. that we think about change,

  298. but turn.

  299. And it's the essence

  300. of what it means

  301. to be a Christian.

  302. Every Christian

  303. has experienced

  304. this change.

  305. It's repentance.

  306. That is what turning means.

  307. And the word is passive,

  308. so we could translate it,

  309. unless you are changed,

  310. you will never enter

  311. the kingdom.

  312. So we repent

  313. and God changes

  314. our hearts

  315. and we become

  316. like a child

  317. and we trust

  318. in the Father.

  319. So unless you

  320. experience

  321. this gospel

  322. producing

  323. change,

  324. you will not

  325. enter the kingdom.

  326. and this means

  327. that we must

  328. admit

  329. that we are lost

  330. first.

  331. That we're lost

  332. sinners

  333. and we deserve,

  334. we have offended

  335. a holy God,

  336. we deserve death.

  337. So if you're here

  338. and you're not a believer,

  339. if you're being honest,

  340. this is one of the things

  341. that catches us up.

  342. our hesitancy

  343. to embrace Christ

  344. because

  345. we still think

  346. deep down

  347. we have something

  348. to offer.

  349. We're not quite

  350. desperate enough.

  351. But when you finally

  352. see that you cannot

  353. save yourself,

  354. you are dead

  355. in your sins,

  356. you are helpless,

  357. you are a beggar,

  358. there's nothing

  359. you can do

  360. to approach God.

  361. you are humbled.

  362. That's what Jesus

  363. is getting at.

  364. The surest mark

  365. commentator said

  366. on this

  367. of conversion,

  368. of belonging

  369. to Jesus

  370. is this humility.

  371. The Christian faith

  372. is humbling.

  373. I heard a song

  374. that goes

  375. something like this,

  376. there is a mountain

  377. that only the lame

  378. can climb.

  379. There is a table

  380. that only the hungry

  381. find.

  382. Only the beggar

  383. will have the currency

  384. when need

  385. is all

  386. you need.

  387. The precondition,

  388. the thing that you get

  389. before you come

  390. to Jesus,

  391. the realization

  392. you come to

  393. is that you are

  394. helpless

  395. and in need

  396. of a Savior.

  397. And that's what

  398. Jesus says

  399. here

  400. for the disciples.

  401. Unless you become

  402. like this child,

  403. unless you realize

  404. your helplessness,

  405. you will never

  406. enter the kingdom.

  407. Of course,

  408. they need to believe

  409. in Jesus.

  410. Of course,

  411. they need to embrace

  412. the gospel

  413. of the death

  414. and resurrection

  415. of Jesus.

  416. But he's saying

  417. there's a state

  418. in which

  419. you must come to,

  420. grips with who you are,

  421. that's truly humbling

  422. before you turn

  423. and trust this Jesus.

  424. Now that's all

  425. introduction.

  426. So this is,

  427. now we jump into

  428. what Jesus,

  429. I think,

  430. is going to start

  431. teaching the disciples.

  432. And it's this,

  433. that the criteria

  434. before you come

  435. into the kingdom

  436. is the same criteria

  437. for greatness

  438. within the kingdom.

  439. And that is

  440. humility.

  441. So that's what

  442. our section,

  443. the rest of these verses

  444. are going to give us.

  445. And I think as people

  446. of God's kingdom,

  447. so we've been talking

  448. about the kingdom

  449. and now we're coming

  450. to life in the kingdom,

  451. so people,

  452. Christians,

  453. believers,

  454. as people of the kingdom,

  455. we walk in gospel humility.

  456. And there's going to be

  457. three points

  458. that I want to draw out

  459. from what Jesus says

  460. this morning.

  461. Three characteristics

  462. you could say

  463. of humility.

  464. Number one,

  465. childlike dependence.

  466. Number two,

  467. radical devotion.

  468. And number three,

  469. heavenly delight.

  470. So I'll repeat those,

  471. but let's look

  472. at number one.

  473. Childlike dependence.

  474. So gospel humility,

  475. the humility

  476. that you had to have

  477. before coming

  478. and becoming a Christian

  479. and now a humility

  480. that should characterize

  481. all believers,

  482. it's characterized

  483. by childlike dependence,

  484. marked by that.

  485. Verses four and five,

  486. let's read them.

  487. Therefore,

  488. whoever takes

  489. the lowly position

  490. of this child

  491. is the greatest

  492. in the kingdom of heaven.

  493. And whoever welcomes

  494. one such child

  495. in my name

  496. welcomes me.

  497. So what is Jesus

  498. getting at?

  499. What is he saying

  500. to us?

  501. Well, he's not saying

  502. that you should be childish.

  503. You know,

  504. like how my daughters

  505. are very quick

  506. to lose focus

  507. on something

  508. and quickly jump

  509. to another thing.

  510. No, he's not saying

  511. Christians should be

  512. absent-minded

  513. like children.

  514. We're not called

  515. to be like children

  516. in every way,

  517. but rather Jesus

  518. is calling the attention

  519. of the dependence

  520. of a child.

  521. So again,

  522. the criteria for

  523. the need,

  524. the dependence

  525. of a child

  526. is a criteria

  527. before you enter

  528. the kingdom

  529. and here it is,

  530. also the way

  531. of the kingdom.

  532. And there's two words

  533. that Jesus gives us.

  534. First, he gives us,

  535. oh, I forgot to hit this.

  536. There you go.

  537. The first word he gives us

  538. is lowly, lowly,

  539. and that's in verse 4.

  540. He says,

  541. whoever takes the lowly

  542. position of this child,

  543. so whoever humbles himself

  544. or herself like a child

  545. is the greatest.

  546. Jesus says something similar

  547. in Mark 9, 35.

  548. Anyone who wants

  549. to be first

  550. must be the very last

  551. and the servant of all.

  552. The lowest position,

  553. lows of lows.

  554. And to illustrate this point,

  555. Jesus points to the child

  556. before them.

  557. So more so than today,

  558. society in Jesus' day

  559. would have not

  560. highly esteemed children.

  561. Maybe our society

  562. is catching up a little bit,

  563. but scholars say

  564. that in that day,

  565. children didn't have

  566. a high place.

  567. They had a lower status.

  568. And you find that,

  569. remember,

  570. we're going to find it

  571. in chapter 19,

  572. when the disciples

  573. rebuke people

  574. for bringing who

  575. to Jesus?

  576. Or, sorry,

  577. Jesus rebukes

  578. the disciples

  579. for bringing children

  580. to Him.

  581. He says,

  582. let the little children

  583. come to Me.

  584. Do not hinder them.

  585. So they were hindering them.

  586. For the Kingdom of Heaven

  587. belongs to such as these.

  588. The one biblical scholar

  589. wrote this,

  590. Jesus celebrates

  591. the humility

  592. that comes

  593. from the child's weakness,

  594. defenselessness,

  595. and vulnerability.

  596. The child can really do

  597. nothing for himself

  598. or herself

  599. and will die

  600. if left alone.

  601. It is this kind

  602. of humility

  603. that Jesus uses

  604. as this visual aid.

  605. You see,

  606. we don't,

  607. we,

  608. Krista and I

  609. came over here,

  610. we didn't just

  611. leave our kids

  612. in our house.

  613. You know,

  614. nobody's,

  615. one of the first questions

  616. is, you know,

  617. who's watching

  618. after your kids?

  619. If we said,

  620. oh, no one,

  621. they're fine.

  622. They're just

  623. cooking their own meals.

  624. No, you wouldn't,

  625. you know that

  626. they're defenseless,

  627. they're helpless.

  628. That's what Jesus

  629. is getting at.

  630. They're in a lowly position.

  631. He says,

  632. anyone who wants

  633. to be great

  634. must humble themselves

  635. like a child.

  636. Those who know

  637. they are helpless

  638. are actually

  639. the greatest

  640. in the Kingdom.

  641. So take again

  642. my daughter Lily,

  643. for example.

  644. She does not care.

  645. about power

  646. or prestige

  647. right now.

  648. Meaning,

  649. if someone came up

  650. to her

  651. and started listing

  652. all their accomplishments

  653. about all the great things

  654. they've done

  655. in their life,

  656. or if she met

  657. a prime minister

  658. or president

  659. or whoever,

  660. met someone,

  661. she wouldn't know

  662. who they are.

  663. She wouldn't be

  664. in awe

  665. of their greatness.

  666. No,

  667. she would,

  668. unless it's Disney

  669. or something like that,

  670. I suppose,

  671. maybe perhaps,

  672. but she would be

  673. impartial.

  674. She would not be moved

  675. by these great accomplishments.

  676. Or think of it

  677. in terms of

  678. who she would play with.

  679. If you want to play

  680. with my daughter

  681. and you're willing

  682. to go play with her,

  683. she's more than willing

  684. to play with you.

  685. There isn't much

  686. she's going to look at

  687. as far as your status.

  688. Or think in terms

  689. of children

  690. when it comes to

  691. believing

  692. what their parents say.

  693. Kids,

  694. little ones,

  695. trust their parents

  696. implicitly.

  697. That's

  698. whatever mom says

  699. must be true.

  700. No,

  701. I think that's what

  702. Jesus is getting at here.

  703. A lowliness of a child.

  704. That's what he's talking about.

  705. Childlike dependence

  706. on one's parents,

  707. on adults.

  708. Now,

  709. you say,

  710. well,

  711. I'm here

  712. and I don't need

  713. to be reminded

  714. about how low I am

  715. because I am low.

  716. the Lord

  717. over

  718. the last few weeks

  719. or whatever

  720. maybe perhaps

  721. has brought you

  722. to a low point.

  723. I want to encourage you

  724. that lowliness

  725. is a path

  726. to a particular

  727. kind of joy.

  728. And it's all

  729. throughout the scriptures.

  730. I heard the song

  731. that says

  732. valleys fill first.

  733. And that's what it is.

  734. I talked with the students

  735. on Friday night

  736. about how

  737. sometimes

  738. when we humble ourselves

  739. it leads to

  740. an emptiness.

  741. An emptiness

  742. that Christ

  743. can fill.

  744. Think about

  745. what James says.

  746. James says

  747. God gives more grace.

  748. Therefore,

  749. it says

  750. God opposes the proud

  751. but gives grace

  752. to the humble.

  753. It says

  754. humble yourselves

  755. before the Lord

  756. and he will exalt you.

  757. So there's a

  758. taking the position

  759. of a child

  760. is a humbling

  761. of oneself.

  762. You think what it says

  763. in Philippians 2.

  764. It's Jesus' ministry.

  765. Though he was

  766. in the form of God

  767. didn't he

  768. account equality

  769. with God

  770. as something to be grasped

  771. but emptied himself

  772. by taking the form

  773. of a servant.

  774. A low position.

  775. Being born in the likeness

  776. of men

  777. being found

  778. in human form

  779. he humbled himself

  780. by becoming obedient

  781. to the point of death

  782. even death

  783. on the cross.

  784. And we know

  785. that Jesus'

  786. lowly position

  787. on earth

  788. led to his exaltation

  789. which is where

  790. Paul in that passage

  791. goes to.

  792. So the point

  793. the truly great

  794. are those

  795. who are lowly.

  796. That's the first word

  797. lowly.

  798. Second

  799. is welcome.

  800. Welcome.

  801. Verse 5

  802. and we'll look at this quickly.

  803. Whoever welcomes

  804. one such child

  805. in my name

  806. welcomes me.

  807. This is humility.

  808. It's a humility

  809. that welcomes

  810. all those

  811. who have been

  812. humbled to.

  813. The word welcome

  814. is one of hospitality

  815. of accepting

  816. loving

  817. receiving

  818. the lowly.

  819. Now certainly

  820. I've had a great example

  821. Kristen and I

  822. have had a great example

  823. of this

  824. this past week.

  825. It's really

  826. accepting people

  827. into your homes

  828. like you have

  829. us

  830. as one

  831. as family.

  832. It's like

  833. a new teammate

  834. that fits

  835. right in

  836. with the team.

  837. Now

  838. I want you to notice

  839. that we

  840. who we are

  841. to welcome

  842. one such child.

  843. Now it's interesting

  844. I think what

  845. Jesus is doing here

  846. and I could be wrong

  847. but I think what

  848. Jesus is doing

  849. is he's actually

  850. starting to broaden

  851. the terms

  852. a little bit.

  853. So he's using

  854. a little different

  855. language

  856. and he's going to

  857. use little ones

  858. in the next verse

  859. but one such child

  860. in this verse

  861. I think

  862. is beginning

  863. to point us

  864. to fellow believers

  865. not just

  866. children per se

  867. although I think

  868. we should consider

  869. what he says

  870. towards children too.

  871. Which makes sense

  872. though

  873. given that he

  874. has this child

  875. in front of them

  876. and all believers

  877. who enter the kingdom

  878. will humble themselves

  879. like this child

  880. then the association

  881. with the child

  882. and a fellow believer

  883. is a good association.

  884. So what I'm saying

  885. I think this is

  886. children

  887. and spiritual children

  888. and then that's

  889. when he jumps

  890. verse 6

  891. as we'll see

  892. to little ones

  893. is really

  894. he's talking

  895. little ones

  896. is fellow

  897. Christians

  898. perhaps fellow

  899. weak believers

  900. but I think

  901. just broadly

  902. fellow Christians.

  903. Either way

  904. the point to draw

  905. from this

  906. is

  907. since

  908. Jesus is connected

  909. united to his followers

  910. then to welcome

  911. and show mercy

  912. to another believer

  913. is to welcome

  914. and show mercy

  915. or to welcome

  916. to Christ.

  917. That should be

  918. one of

  919. our response

  920. should be

  921. one of amazement.

  922. I mean the world

  923. looks to welcome

  924. the popular

  925. the good looking

  926. the celebrity

  927. but we don't

  928. just welcome

  929. the celebrity

  930. we welcome

  931. the nobody.

  932. We treat

  933. the nobody

  934. like they are

  935. the red carpet

  936. for someone

  937. who is lowly.

  938. This should

  939. certainly

  940. obliterate

  941. any idea

  942. that there are

  943. divisions of status

  944. in the body

  945. of Christ.

  946. Now we know

  947. this but recently

  948. I sat down

  949. with one of our

  950. church members

  951. and

  952. he said to me

  953. I don't

  954. fit anywhere

  955. including church.

  956. In my mind

  957. it went immediately

  958. to this text

  959. because I was

  960. studying it.

  961. As believers

  962. we should be

  963. welcoming those

  964. who feel like

  965. they don't

  966. fit anywhere.

  967. here

  968. in this place

  969. with these

  970. people

  971. they fit

  972. their home.

  973. The church

  974. is a place

  975. that all can

  976. come

  977. all can

  978. find a welcome

  979. and those

  980. of every tribe

  981. tongue

  982. nation

  983. people group

  984. doesn't matter

  985. they all

  986. have a home

  987. here.

  988. The other

  989. aspect of this

  990. is do we

  991. have this

  992. kind of view

  993. of children

  994. in our

  995. churches?

  996. Are we

  997. welcoming

  998. children?

  999. Do they

  1000. and their

  1001. parents know

  1002. we value

  1003. them and

  1004. appreciate them?

  1005. One of the

  1006. beauties of

  1007. polo is

  1008. just this.

  1009. It's an

  1010. opportunity to

  1011. welcome and

  1012. to value

  1013. children

  1014. because we

  1015. know that

  1016. children matter.

  1017. They matter

  1018. to God.

  1019. God loves

  1020. kids.

  1021. And we

  1022. dare not

  1023. find them

  1024. a nuisance

  1025. insignificant

  1026. or unimportant

  1027. because children

  1028. matter to God

  1029. and they are

  1030. to have

  1031. our welcome.

  1032. So mature

  1033. believers have

  1034. childlike

  1035. dependence shown

  1036. by two words

  1037. lowly and

  1038. welcome.

  1039. That's number

  1040. one.

  1041. Number two

  1042. you have

  1043. childlike

  1044. dependence

  1045. then you

  1046. have radical

  1047. devotion.

  1048. Radical

  1049. devotion.

  1050. That's

  1051. verses 6

  1052. and 9.

  1053. So one

  1054. of the

  1055. clearest

  1056. signs of

  1057. this

  1058. humility

  1059. that Jesus

  1060. is talking

  1061. about is

  1062. found in

  1063. two

  1064. perspectives.

  1065. On one

  1066. side devoted

  1067. Christians

  1068. committed

  1069. Christians

  1070. watch out

  1071. for others

  1072. and on the

  1073. other side

  1074. they watch

  1075. out for

  1076. themselves.

  1077. That's what

  1078. Jesus is

  1079. going to

  1080. get at

  1081. here.

  1082. So they

  1083. watch out

  1084. for others

  1085. verses 6

  1086. and 7

  1087. look down

  1088. at verse

  1089. 6.

  1090. If anyone

  1091. causes one

  1092. of these

  1093. little ones

  1094. those who

  1095. believe in

  1096. me.

  1097. So I

  1098. think he's

  1099. talking about

  1100. fellow

  1101. believers.

  1102. If anyone

  1103. causes one

  1104. of these

  1105. fellow

  1106. believers

  1107. to stumble

  1108. it would

  1109. be better

  1110. for them

  1111. to have

  1112. a large

  1113. millstone

  1114. hung around

  1115. their neck

  1116. and be

  1117. drowned

  1118. in the

  1119. depths

  1120. of the

  1121. sea.

  1122. As believers

  1123. Jesus calls

  1124. us to have

  1125. a responsibility

  1126. to protect

  1127. and watch

  1128. over other

  1129. believers.

  1130. believers.

  1131. We're not

  1132. solo

  1133. Christians

  1134. just in

  1135. it for

  1136. ourselves

  1137. on

  1138. individual

  1139. journeys.

  1140. No,

  1141. we are

  1142. in this

  1143. whether we

  1144. like it

  1145. or not

  1146. sometimes.

  1147. We are

  1148. in this

  1149. together.

  1150. And Jesus

  1151. gives a

  1152. warning to

  1153. anyone who

  1154. causes the

  1155. lowly or

  1156. weaker

  1157. disciple to

  1158. stumble.

  1159. Now to

  1160. stumble

  1161. is a

  1162. word that

  1163. maybe we

  1164. think immediately

  1165. of to

  1166. sin,

  1167. just broadly

  1168. to sin

  1169. or offend.

  1170. But multiple

  1171. scholars point

  1172. out the fact

  1173. that the

  1174. severity of

  1175. the warning

  1176. probably means

  1177. that this

  1178. word has

  1179. a more

  1180. significant

  1181. meaning.

  1182. That is

  1183. that it

  1184. means to

  1185. lead someone

  1186. to fall

  1187. away from

  1188. Jesus,

  1189. to apostatize.

  1190. So just

  1191. like a

  1192. false prophet

  1193. or TV

  1194. preacher or

  1195. something,

  1196. they get

  1197. on and

  1198. they preach

  1199. a false

  1200. gospel and

  1201. they lead

  1202. a believer

  1203. to stray

  1204. away.

  1205. So would

  1206. be someone

  1207. in the

  1208. world who

  1209. leads this

  1210. person to

  1211. fall away.

  1212. This judgment

  1213. is what

  1214. Jesus is

  1215. talking about.

  1216. Judgment

  1217. on that

  1218. person.

  1219. And it's

  1220. really an

  1221. argument from

  1222. the lesser

  1223. to the

  1224. greater.

  1225. So a

  1226. millstone was

  1227. this, and

  1228. I've seen

  1229. them in

  1230. Israel,

  1231. these large

  1232. stones that

  1233. would be

  1234. pulled by

  1235. a donkey.

  1236. And that

  1237. millstone was

  1238. hung around

  1239. the neck as

  1240. a means of

  1241. execution.

  1242. This was a

  1243. frequent

  1244. execution in

  1245. Jesus'

  1246. day and

  1247. it's terrible.

  1248. obviously

  1249. horrible

  1250. drowning,

  1251. we can

  1252. imagine

  1253. would be

  1254. a terrible

  1255. way to

  1256. die.

  1257. And

  1258. Jesus'

  1259. point is

  1260. not to

  1261. say this

  1262. is what

  1263. they're

  1264. going to

  1265. get.

  1266. His

  1267. point is

  1268. to say

  1269. the punishment

  1270. in our

  1271. text is

  1272. better than

  1273. the punishment

  1274. that they'll

  1275. be dished out

  1276. to those

  1277. who lead

  1278. them astray.

  1279. Terrible

  1280. punishment of

  1281. being drowned

  1282. would be a

  1283. mercy compared

  1284. to what's in

  1285. store for

  1286. those who

  1287. turn little

  1288. ones away

  1289. from Christ.

  1290. Christ.

  1291. So broadly

  1292. I think our

  1293. response should

  1294. be a

  1295. warning,

  1296. certainly,

  1297. to be

  1298. careful on

  1299. how we

  1300. lead our

  1301. brothers and

  1302. sisters.

  1303. We don't

  1304. be a means

  1305. by which they

  1306. turn away.

  1307. And then

  1308. verse 7

  1309. adds more,

  1310. woe to the

  1311. world because

  1312. of the things

  1313. that cause

  1314. people to

  1315. stumble.

  1316. Such things

  1317. must come,

  1318. but woe to

  1319. the person

  1320. through whom

  1321. they come.

  1322. So according

  1323. to God's

  1324. word,

  1325. we expect

  1326. temptation.

  1327. We're going

  1328. to expect

  1329. seeing temptation

  1330. is inevitable.

  1331. Still,

  1332. the inevitability

  1333. of it doesn't

  1334. excuse the

  1335. one through

  1336. whom it

  1337. comes.

  1338. And so

  1339. we're responsible

  1340. for other

  1341. believers,

  1342. for their

  1343. walk with

  1344. Christ,

  1345. and how we

  1346. interact with

  1347. them to not

  1348. be a

  1349. stumbling

  1350. block for

  1351. them.

  1352. And we're

  1353. culpable if

  1354. we lead them

  1355. to stumble.

  1356. And of

  1357. course,

  1358. this is

  1359. talking

  1360. somewhat

  1361. about the

  1362. world,

  1363. too,

  1364. which is

  1365. interesting to

  1366. think through

  1367. that them

  1368. leading

  1369. believers

  1370. astray,

  1371. the world,

  1372. there will

  1373. be a

  1374. judgment on

  1375. them.

  1376. And this

  1377. is a

  1378. warning to

  1379. them as

  1380. well,

  1381. to say,

  1382. do not

  1383. lead

  1384. believers

  1385. astray.

  1386. So I

  1387. hope you

  1388. see this.

  1389. The point

  1390. I'm drawing

  1391. out is

  1392. mainly that

  1393. you and

  1394. I have a

  1395. responsibility

  1396. for one

  1397. another.

  1398. Are we

  1399. concerned for

  1400. our brothers

  1401. and sisters

  1402. holiness,

  1403. or are we

  1404. really just

  1405. focused so

  1406. much on

  1407. just ourselves

  1408. and what

  1409. we want?

  1410. It's a

  1411. particular thing

  1412. that we

  1413. should wrestle

  1414. with in

  1415. light of what

  1416. Jesus says

  1417. here,

  1418. that we

  1419. would not

  1420. want to

  1421. lead anyone

  1422. astray.

  1423. So watch

  1424. out for

  1425. others.

  1426. And then

  1427. he,

  1428. in verses

  1429. 8 and

  1430. 9,

  1431. he says,

  1432. watch out

  1433. for

  1434. yourself.

  1435. Watch

  1436. out for

  1437. yourself.

  1438. Look at

  1439. what Jesus

  1440. continues and

  1441. says,

  1442. if your

  1443. hand or

  1444. foot causes

  1445. you to

  1446. stumble,

  1447. cut it

  1448. off and

  1449. throw it

  1450. away.

  1451. It is

  1452. better that

  1453. you enter

  1454. life maimed

  1455. or crippled

  1456. than to

  1457. have two

  1458. hands or

  1459. two feet

  1460. and be

  1461. thrown into

  1462. eternal

  1463. fire.

  1464. And if

  1465. your eye

  1466. causes you

  1467. to stumble,

  1468. gouge it

  1469. out and

  1470. throw it

  1471. away.

  1472. It is

  1473. better for

  1474. you to

  1475. enter life

  1476. with one

  1477. eye than

  1478. to have

  1479. two eyes

  1480. and be

  1481. thrown in

  1482. the fire

  1483. of hell.

  1484. So this

  1485. is where

  1486. I am

  1487. getting the

  1488. idea that

  1489. it is

  1490. radical

  1491. devotion.

  1492. I mean,

  1493. this is

  1494. radical,

  1495. what Jesus

  1496. is talking

  1497. about.

  1498. And you

  1499. would have

  1500. heard it

  1501. before because

  1502. he says

  1503. something similar

  1504. in Matthew

  1505. 5 where he

  1506. applies it

  1507. directly to

  1508. lust and

  1509. he says,

  1510. if your eye

  1511. causes you

  1512. to sin,

  1513. gouge it

  1514. out.

  1515. But if

  1516. you're

  1517. watch out

  1518. for yourselves,

  1519. he gets

  1520. to talking

  1521. about what

  1522. 1 Timothy 4

  1523. 16 says,

  1524. watch your

  1525. life and

  1526. your doctrine

  1527. closely.

  1528. So deal

  1529. with your

  1530. own sins.

  1531. Turn away

  1532. from the

  1533. thing that's

  1534. causing you

  1535. to stumble.

  1536. And so

  1537. how are we

  1538. to take

  1539. Christ's

  1540. words?

  1541. Well,

  1542. we take

  1543. them, I

  1544. think,

  1545. figuratively.

  1546. He's using

  1547. figurative

  1548. language.

  1549. I think it

  1550. becomes clear

  1551. when you

  1552. think about

  1553. what he's

  1554. actually dealing

  1555. with.

  1556. To cut

  1557. off a limb

  1558. doesn't deal

  1559. with the

  1560. real problem.

  1561. Our

  1562. hearts.

  1563. So the

  1564. root of

  1565. sin lies

  1566. in our

  1567. hearts.

  1568. Actual

  1569. mutilation

  1570. of the

  1571. flesh would

  1572. not make

  1573. sense because

  1574. you can

  1575. look and

  1576. lust after

  1577. something with

  1578. one eye

  1579. just as

  1580. much as

  1581. you can

  1582. with two.

  1583. So it

  1584. doesn't take

  1585. care of

  1586. the problem.

  1587. I think

  1588. that means

  1589. that he's

  1590. talking

  1591. figuratively

  1592. saying we

  1593. should take

  1594. sin

  1595. seriously

  1596. and take

  1597. measures

  1598. to fight,

  1599. not go

  1600. around flirting

  1601. with sin,

  1602. but instead

  1603. don't act

  1604. like you're

  1605. untouchable,

  1606. but act like

  1607. you need to

  1608. resist

  1609. temptation.

  1610. A famous

  1611. line from

  1612. John Owen,

  1613. if you've

  1614. heard it

  1615. before,

  1616. be killing

  1617. sin or

  1618. sin will

  1619. be killing

  1620. you.

  1621. It's a

  1622. realization

  1623. that we

  1624. should turn

  1625. and throw

  1626. it away,

  1627. get rid

  1628. of it,

  1629. kill sin

  1630. or anything

  1631. that leads

  1632. us to

  1633. sin.

  1634. We should

  1635. expel

  1636. it,

  1637. deny it.

  1638. So I

  1639. don't know

  1640. what it is

  1641. for you,

  1642. but I

  1643. think what

  1644. he's getting

  1645. at is

  1646. something where

  1647. it's the

  1648. thing that

  1649. you know

  1650. that leads

  1651. you to

  1652. sin.

  1653. An example

  1654. would be a

  1655. smartphone at

  1656. night,

  1657. looking at

  1658. your smartphone

  1659. at night.

  1660. Leads you

  1661. to sin.

  1662. We're

  1663. watching certain

  1664. movies,

  1665. social media,

  1666. sports,

  1667. doing certain

  1668. activities,

  1669. busyness,

  1670. where you're

  1671. just so

  1672. busy that

  1673. you're always

  1674. upset with

  1675. the kids,

  1676. lack of

  1677. sleep where

  1678. you're just

  1679. irritated all

  1680. the time.

  1681. It's the

  1682. condition that's

  1683. maybe not

  1684. necessarily

  1685. sinful,

  1686. but it

  1687. leads you

  1688. to be

  1689. tempted to

  1690. sin.

  1691. And he

  1692. says,

  1693. cut it

  1694. out.

  1695. It is

  1696. worth

  1697. killing it

  1698. than to

  1699. slide adrift

  1700. into judgment,

  1701. which is what

  1702. he's getting

  1703. at,

  1704. eternal hell

  1705. and a

  1706. lake of

  1707. fire,

  1708. or a

  1709. fire of

  1710. hell.

  1711. So it's

  1712. just a

  1713. consideration

  1714. for all

  1715. of us

  1716. to consider

  1717. what are

  1718. the things

  1719. that are

  1720. leading us

  1721. to be

  1722. tempted?

  1723. And can

  1724. we get

  1725. rid of

  1726. them?

  1727. We find

  1728. alternatives.

  1729. So I

  1730. think of

  1731. if you

  1732. have a

  1733. friend,

  1734. so both

  1735. of these

  1736. together,

  1737. if you

  1738. have a

  1739. friend who's

  1740. trying to

  1741. stop drinking

  1742. soda,

  1743. or pop

  1744. as we

  1745. call it,

  1746. and it's

  1747. not sinful,

  1748. I'm not

  1749. saying that

  1750. at all,

  1751. but that

  1752. friend just

  1753. decides they

  1754. want to

  1755. make a

  1756. change,

  1757. and you

  1758. go out

  1759. and you

  1760. buy them

  1761. a soda,

  1762. you're not

  1763. watching out

  1764. for that

  1765. friend at

  1766. all.

  1767. And so

  1768. that's what

  1769. Jesus is

  1770. saying

  1771. spiritually.

  1772. Same

  1773. would be

  1774. true.

  1775. If you

  1776. have a

  1777. friend that

  1778. has admitted

  1779. to you,

  1780. I've

  1781. struggled

  1782. with gossip,

  1783. the last

  1784. thing you'd

  1785. want to

  1786. do with

  1787. him or

  1788. her is

  1789. talk about

  1790. some other

  1791. people in

  1792. the church

  1793. in a way

  1794. that maybe

  1795. lead them

  1796. to begin

  1797. gossiping.

  1798. I think that's

  1799. where he's

  1800. talking about

  1801. with leading

  1802. people to

  1803. stumble.

  1804. And this is

  1805. radical devotion

  1806. with our own

  1807. life,

  1808. being willing

  1809. to take

  1810. things out

  1811. that are not

  1812. necessarily

  1813. evil,

  1814. evil,

  1815. but that

  1816. lead us

  1817. to struggle

  1818. with sin.

  1819. So,

  1820. first one

  1821. is childlike

  1822. dependence.

  1823. I think

  1824. there's a

  1825. humility that

  1826. has childlike

  1827. dependence on

  1828. God.

  1829. We're

  1830. desperate.

  1831. And then

  1832. the second

  1833. one is

  1834. radical

  1835. devotion.

  1836. And then

  1837. the third

  1838. one is

  1839. heavenly

  1840. delight.

  1841. So this

  1842. humility is

  1843. marked by

  1844. heavenly

  1845. delight.

  1846. And what

  1847. I mean

  1848. is that

  1849. we're to

  1850. have the

  1851. same heart

  1852. as the

  1853. Father has.

  1854. So we're

  1855. to reflect

  1856. his heart,

  1857. his heavenly

  1858. delight,

  1859. delight in

  1860. the same

  1861. things.

  1862. And that

  1863. we discover

  1864. in verses

  1865. 10-14.

  1866. So let's

  1867. take each

  1868. verse in

  1869. turn.

  1870. Verse 10.

  1871. See that

  1872. you do not

  1873. despise one

  1874. of these

  1875. little ones.

  1876. For I

  1877. tell you

  1878. that their

  1879. angels in

  1880. heaven always

  1881. see the

  1882. face of

  1883. my Father

  1884. in heaven.

  1885. So he

  1886. tells us

  1887. again not

  1888. to despise

  1889. little ones.

  1890. The third

  1891. time he's

  1892. used that

  1893. phrase.

  1894. And the

  1895. least among

  1896. us,

  1897. and we

  1898. shouldn't look

  1899. down on

  1900. them with

  1901. contempt,

  1902. instead we

  1903. should love

  1904. them, care

  1905. for them,

  1906. and treat

  1907. them, and

  1908. look out for

  1909. their holiness.

  1910. But what is

  1911. Jesus getting

  1912. at?

  1913. He brings

  1914. up angels.

  1915. Maybe not

  1916. what we were

  1917. expecting as

  1918. we're reading

  1919. through.

  1920. Oh, angels.

  1921. Oh, that's

  1922. interesting.

  1923. But we

  1924. believe in

  1925. angels.

  1926. Right?

  1927. Yes.

  1928. We believe

  1929. in angels.

  1930. And who are

  1931. these angels?

  1932. Well, they're

  1933. creatures,

  1934. specifically God's

  1935. agents.

  1936. They're

  1937. messengers,

  1938. the word

  1939. meaning there.

  1940. And the

  1941. Bible calls

  1942. them ministering

  1943. spirits.

  1944. So they're

  1945. those spirits

  1946. who minister

  1947. to believers.

  1948. They're real,

  1949. not mythical.

  1950. And the

  1951. Father, they

  1952. serve our

  1953. God in

  1954. various ways,

  1955. we see in

  1956. the Bible.

  1957. God.

  1958. Some people

  1959. take this

  1960. passage to

  1961. mean that

  1962. each one

  1963. of us

  1964. have

  1965. individual

  1966. guardian

  1967. angels.

  1968. But what

  1969. we don't

  1970. see,

  1971. actually,

  1972. the Bible,

  1973. although it

  1974. doesn't say

  1975. a lot about

  1976. that,

  1977. it doesn't

  1978. ever say

  1979. there's a

  1980. one-to-one.

  1981. So we

  1982. know that

  1983. there are

  1984. angels that

  1985. are guarding

  1986. us.

  1987. But what he's

  1988. not saying

  1989. here is

  1990. necessarily

  1991. that,

  1992. like,

  1993. in,

  1994. I don't

  1995. know if

  1996. you've all

  1997. seen the

  1998. film,

  1999. but It's

  2000. a Wonderful

  2001. Life,

  2002. the Christmas

  2003. film.

  2004. I don't

  2005. think Johnny

  2006. has seen

  2007. it,

  2008. but perhaps

  2009. you have.

  2010. And where

  2011. they have,

  2012. Clarence is

  2013. like a

  2014. guardian

  2015. angel.

  2016. He's got

  2017. the one-to-one

  2018. assigned.

  2019. I don't

  2020. think that's

  2021. what the

  2022. Bible says.

  2023. I think

  2024. that's made

  2025. up.

  2026. But there

  2027. is, in a

  2028. sense,

  2029. where there

  2030. are angels

  2031. from this

  2032. text that

  2033. have a

  2034. role with

  2035. these little

  2036. ones,

  2037. where they

  2038. are serving,

  2039. they are

  2040. serving

  2041. believers.

  2042. And they're

  2043. beholding the

  2044. face of

  2045. God.

  2046. They're

  2047. standing before

  2048. God,

  2049. night and

  2050. day.

  2051. And I

  2052. think that

  2053. points to

  2054. the fact that

  2055. God has

  2056. servants committed

  2057. to these little

  2058. ones.

  2059. In that way,

  2060. He cares about

  2061. them enough

  2062. to have

  2063. angels take

  2064. care of

  2065. them.

  2066. And so,

  2067. so should

  2068. we?

  2069. We should

  2070. see the

  2071. heart that

  2072. God has

  2073. and not

  2074. despise

  2075. fellow

  2076. believers,

  2077. knowing that

  2078. God cares

  2079. deeply about

  2080. them,

  2081. enough to

  2082. send out

  2083. His messengers

  2084. to care for

  2085. them.

  2086. So He

  2087. points to the

  2088. role of

  2089. angels to

  2090. caring for

  2091. these weaker

  2092. Christians as

  2093. a warning for

  2094. those who

  2095. despise them.

  2096. And then,

  2097. to illustrate

  2098. that further,

  2099. He gives a

  2100. parable in

  2101. verses 12

  2102. through 14.

  2103. But,

  2104. real quick,

  2105. I always,

  2106. you know,

  2107. you're reading

  2108. through and

  2109. then suddenly

  2110. you say,

  2111. well,

  2112. verse 11.

  2113. And you're

  2114. like,

  2115. when is

  2116. verse 11?

  2117. Well,

  2118. modern

  2119. translations,

  2120. you'll notice

  2121. it's missing.

  2122. And that's

  2123. simply because

  2124. our earliest

  2125. Greek manuscripts

  2126. don't have

  2127. this verse.

  2128. So the

  2129. later ones

  2130. have included

  2131. it because

  2132. they more

  2133. than likely

  2134. borrowed it

  2135. from Luke

  2136. 19.

  2137. 10.

  2138. So the

  2139. verse,

  2140. and I don't

  2141. know if

  2142. there's a

  2143. footnote

  2144. there,

  2145. but the

  2146. verse that

  2147. is normally

  2148. there in

  2149. some of

  2150. the older

  2151. translations

  2152. is just

  2153. a parallel

  2154. from Luke

  2155. 19.

  2156. 10.

  2157. So it's

  2158. most likely

  2159. not original

  2160. here,

  2161. not a huge

  2162. deal because

  2163. it's found

  2164. in Luke

  2165. 19,

  2166. but that's

  2167. the explanation

  2168. why it

  2169. suddenly skips

  2170. verse 11.

  2171. All right,

  2172. verses 12

  2173. through 14.

  2174. What do

  2175. you think?

  2176. If a man

  2177. owns a

  2178. hundred

  2179. sheep and

  2180. one of

  2181. them

  2182. wanders

  2183. away,

  2184. will he

  2185. not leave

  2186. the ninety-nine

  2187. on the

  2188. hills and

  2189. go to

  2190. look for

  2191. the one

  2192. that

  2193. wandered

  2194. off?

  2195. And if

  2196. he finds

  2197. it,

  2198. truly I

  2199. tell you,

  2200. he is

  2201. happier

  2202. about that

  2203. one sheep

  2204. than about

  2205. the ninety-nine

  2206. that did

  2207. not wander

  2208. off.

  2209. In the

  2210. same way,

  2211. your Father

  2212. in heaven

  2213. is not

  2214. willing that

  2215. any of

  2216. these little

  2217. ones should

  2218. perish.

  2219. I don't

  2220. know if

  2221. you've ever

  2222. noticed this

  2223. parable.

  2224. You've heard

  2225. the Luke

  2226. 15 one,

  2227. right?

  2228. I think I

  2229. immediately

  2230. thought this

  2231. was just

  2232. the same

  2233. as the

  2234. Luke 15

  2235. one.

  2236. But in

  2237. that context,

  2238. Jesus is

  2239. making a

  2240. different

  2241. point.

  2242. Luke 15,

  2243. Jesus is

  2244. showing God's

  2245. concern for

  2246. the lost

  2247. sinner,

  2248. the

  2249. un-evangelized,

  2250. the

  2251. unbeliever.

  2252. Now by

  2253. contrast,

  2254. our passage

  2255. is God's

  2256. love for

  2257. the little

  2258. ones in

  2259. the faith,

  2260. who wander

  2261. off,

  2262. who go

  2263. astray,

  2264. which I

  2265. take to

  2266. mean

  2267. disciples,

  2268. believers.

  2269. As one

  2270. writer has

  2271. noted,

  2272. there's more

  2273. than one

  2274. way to be

  2275. lost.

  2276. So my

  2277. daughters have

  2278. these little

  2279. water bottles

  2280. they carry

  2281. around everywhere.

  2282. It is one

  2283. thing,

  2284. which they

  2285. lose them

  2286. all the

  2287. time,

  2288. that's why

  2289. I thought

  2290. of this,

  2291. it is one

  2292. thing to

  2293. lose it

  2294. at home.

  2295. You know,

  2296. we know

  2297. it's inside

  2298. these walls

  2299. somewhere.

  2300. It's a

  2301. whole other

  2302. thing to

  2303. realize,

  2304. oh,

  2305. we have

  2306. no idea

  2307. where that

  2308. is.

  2309. It is out

  2310. in the

  2311. world,

  2312. you know,

  2313. whether we

  2314. are out

  2315. to eat

  2316. or whatever

  2317. it was.

  2318. I think

  2319. that Jesus

  2320. is talking

  2321. about the

  2322. home here.

  2323. Believers

  2324. losing it

  2325. here.

  2326. He's not

  2327. willing to

  2328. let any

  2329. believer who's

  2330. gone astray

  2331. perish.

  2332. So what

  2333. this shows

  2334. us is that

  2335. God cares

  2336. for each

  2337. believer.

  2338. Isn't

  2339. that amazing?

  2340. Even the

  2341. weakest.

  2342. And then

  2343. there's even

  2344. a rock

  2345. solid promise

  2346. at the

  2347. end.

  2348. He is

  2349. not willing

  2350. that any

  2351. should

  2352. perish.

  2353. God

  2354. pursues

  2355. his

  2356. children

  2357. who have

  2358. gone

  2359. astray

  2360. like a

  2361. shepherd

  2362. looking for

  2363. lost

  2364. sheep.

  2365. So,

  2366. real quick,

  2367. three things.

  2368. This

  2369. parable says

  2370. God cares

  2371. for us

  2372. individually.

  2373. It's

  2374. amazing.

  2375. Individually.

  2376. Brothers

  2377. and sisters,

  2378. God loves

  2379. you

  2380. personally.

  2381. He knows

  2382. you

  2383. personally.

  2384. And he's

  2385. committed to

  2386. you specifically

  2387. right now.

  2388. Every believer

  2389. in this room,

  2390. I mean,

  2391. he knows that

  2392. the one is

  2393. astray.

  2394. That's what it

  2395. says.

  2396. He's not

  2397. willing that

  2398. one of these

  2399. little ones

  2400. perish.

  2401. So God is

  2402. pursuing and

  2403. caring for us

  2404. individually.

  2405. That's

  2406. incredible.

  2407. Second,

  2408. God loves

  2409. us

  2410. constantly.

  2411. He will

  2412. search

  2413. continually

  2414. until he

  2415. finds each

  2416. sheep that

  2417. has strayed.

  2418. God

  2419. wills that

  2420. everyone who

  2421. belongs to

  2422. him by

  2423. faith should

  2424. persevere

  2425. with him.

  2426. His love

  2427. is constant.

  2428. He does

  2429. not give

  2430. up.

  2431. It's

  2432. incredible.

  2433. Three,

  2434. God delights

  2435. in our

  2436. return.

  2437. It says

  2438. he's happier,

  2439. which happy

  2440. is maybe

  2441. not the

  2442. right word,

  2443. I think.

  2444. I don't

  2445. know why

  2446. they switch

  2447. it.

  2448. I have an

  2449. older NIV

  2450. here and

  2451. they switched

  2452. it from

  2453. delight to

  2454. happy.

  2455. Seems like

  2456. not the

  2457. greatest

  2458. change.

  2459. He delights.

  2460. He is a

  2461. party.

  2462. When one

  2463. of the

  2464. little ones

  2465. that he

  2466. is called

  2467. returns,

  2468. he is not

  2469. willing to

  2470. leave anyone

  2471. behind and

  2472. his response

  2473. to their

  2474. return is

  2475. joy.

  2476. Again, I

  2477. don't know,

  2478. but you

  2479. may be

  2480. here and

  2481. you feel

  2482. like God

  2483. has abandoned

  2484. you.

  2485. Know this

  2486. for sure,

  2487. he has

  2488. not abandoned

  2489. you.

  2490. For his

  2491. own he

  2492. cares.

  2493. He has

  2494. promised to

  2495. never leave

  2496. you nor

  2497. forsake you.

  2498. He has

  2499. not abandoned

  2500. you.

  2501. And he

  2502. loves you

  2503. constantly,

  2504. and he's

  2505. pursuing you

  2506. relentlessly.

  2507. We sometimes

  2508. think,

  2509. even if we

  2510. think we're

  2511. more reformed

  2512. in our

  2513. thinking,

  2514. we sometimes

  2515. think that

  2516. we have to

  2517. pursue the

  2518. Lord,

  2519. and if we

  2520. don't,

  2521. well,

  2522. we'll just

  2523. stray away.

  2524. There's a

  2525. sense in

  2526. which the

  2527. Lord is

  2528. the one

  2529. that is

  2530. pursuing

  2531. us

  2532. constantly.

  2533. But I

  2534. think the

  2535. point that

  2536. I'm drawing

  2537. out to

  2538. is that if

  2539. he cares

  2540. so much

  2541. about those

  2542. who have

  2543. gone astray,

  2544. well,

  2545. so should

  2546. we.

  2547. So should

  2548. we.

  2549. Humility is

  2550. not giving

  2551. up on

  2552. anyone who's

  2553. gone astray.

  2554. You can

  2555. maybe look

  2556. around the

  2557. room and

  2558. think there

  2559. are some

  2560. that aren't

  2561. here that

  2562. were not

  2563. just a few

  2564. years ago.

  2565. We should

  2566. be careful

  2567. not to

  2568. write anyone

  2569. off,

  2570. because God

  2571. doesn't.

  2572. And we

  2573. should care

  2574. as God

  2575. does.

  2576. I think

  2577. this

  2578. humility,

  2579. the theme

  2580. throughout

  2581. has been

  2582. humility.

  2583. Maybe not

  2584. what we

  2585. think of,

  2586. but it's

  2587. true greatness,

  2588. greatness of

  2589. the kingdom

  2590. that he's

  2591. been talking

  2592. about,

  2593. that the

  2594. gospel instills

  2595. in us,

  2596. this humility,

  2597. a childlike

  2598. dependence,

  2599. as we've

  2600. said,

  2601. despises no

  2602. one,

  2603. even the

  2604. lowly,

  2605. and this

  2606. radical

  2607. devotion to

  2608. one's own

  2609. holiness and

  2610. to others'

  2611. holiness,

  2612. and then

  2613. care and

  2614. protection of

  2615. our own as

  2616. we walk

  2617. with the

  2618. Lord.

  2619. And last,

  2620. it produces

  2621. a delight

  2622. in that

  2623. when believers

  2624. come in,

  2625. when believers

  2626. come,

  2627. when they've

  2628. gone astray

  2629. and they are

  2630. restored to

  2631. us,

  2632. we have

  2633. this joy,

  2634. this delight.

  2635. To the

  2636. degree that

  2637. you search

  2638. for something

  2639. that is

  2640. lost,

  2641. reveals the

  2642. value of

  2643. that thing.

  2644. Now,

  2645. if you lose

  2646. something,

  2647. you're like,

  2648. I don't really

  2649. care about that.

  2650. You're not

  2651. going to

  2652. search very

  2653. long for

  2654. it.

  2655. But Chris

  2656. will tell

  2657. you,

  2658. if I lose

  2659. something that

  2660. I love,

  2661. I search

  2662. for it

  2663. endlessly,

  2664. I don't

  2665. quit,

  2666. God is

  2667. not willing

  2668. that any

  2669. should

  2670. perish.

  2671. That's

  2672. amazing

  2673. promise

  2674. to end

  2675. this morning

  2676. with.

  2677. It's his

  2678. heart for

  2679. those who

  2680. have gone

  2681. astray,

  2682. and if

  2683. that's

  2684. true,

  2685. if it's

  2686. his heart

  2687. for those

  2688. who have

  2689. gone

  2690. astray,

  2691. imagine

  2692. again what

  2693. his heart

  2694. is for

  2695. you.

  2696. He loves

  2697. you.

  2698. And that's

  2699. what our

  2700. heart should

  2701. be for one

  2702. another and

  2703. for those

  2704. who go

  2705. astray.

  2706. May we

  2707. reflect the

  2708. father's

  2709. love in

  2710. this.

  2711. To be

  2712. great in

  2713. the kingdom,

  2714. to be

  2715. humble like

  2716. a child,

  2717. radically

  2718. leading others

  2719. to Christ,

  2720. and having

  2721. this heavenly

  2722. delight.

  2723. That's what

  2724. Jesus is

  2725. calling us

  2726. to this

  2727. morning.

  2728. And we

  2729. need

  2730. grace.

  2731. God

  2732. opposes

  2733. the proud,

  2734. gives

  2735. grace to

  2736. the humble.

  2737. The beauty

  2738. is when you

  2739. humble yourself

  2740. like a child,

  2741. he gives

  2742. you grace.

  2743. let's pray

  2744. for that

  2745. grace.

  2746. Lord, we

  2747. are in

  2748. desperate
