  1. If you haven't got a Bible with you, please, you can get one now and you might want to

  2. take some notes as well in the pen there at the table at the back as you came in.

  3. Thank you.

  4. So Matthew's Gospel, Chapter 20.

  5. Last week, Jason, our guest speaker, was talking about greatness in the kingdom.

  6. Today we're going to be thinking about entering the kingdom.

  7. Let's read from Matthew, Chapter 20, verse 1 to verse 16.

    Matthew 20:1

  8. Jesus is speaking.

  9. For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire workers

  10. for his vineyard.

  11. He agreed to pay them a denarius, that's a day's wage, and sent them into his vineyard.

  12. About nine in the morning he went out and saw others standing in the marketplace doing nothing.

  13. He told them, you also go and work in my vineyard and I will pay you whatever is right.

  14. So they went.

  15. He went out again about noon and about three in the afternoon and did the same thing.

  16. About five in the afternoon he went out and found still others standing around.

  17. He asked them, why have you been standing here all day long doing nothing?

  18. Because no one has hired us, they answered.

  19. He said to them, you also go and work in my vineyard.

  20. When evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his foreman, call the workers and pay

  21. them their wages, beginning with the last ones hired and going on to the first.

  22. The workers who were hired about five in the afternoon came and each received a denarius.

  23. So when those came who were hired first, they expected to receive more.

  24. But each one of them also received a denarius.

  25. When they received it, they began to grumble against the landowner.

  26. Those who were hired last worked only one hour, they said.

  27. And you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the work of the heat of the day.

  28. But he answered one of them, I am not being unfair to you, friend.

  29. Didn't you agree to work for a denarius?

  30. Take your pay and go.

  31. I want to give the one who is hired last the same as I gave you.

  32. Don't I have the right to do what I want with my own money?

  33. Or are you envious?

  34. Because I am generous.

  35. So, the last will be first and the first will be last.

  36. Well, let's pray.

  37. Father, in your grace and because you are kind and compassionate,

  38. would you pour out your blessing upon us as we gather here,

  39. upon our Sunday school as they meet at the same time.

  40. Father, in your grace,

  41. would you pour out your spirit generously,

  42. so that we may be moved,

  43. captured by your word afresh,

  44. and changed

  45. to see the wonder of who you are

  46. and the life you've called us to live.

  47. So help us all, we pray, in Jesus' name.

  48. Amen.

  49. Amen.

  50. Well, the other day I was driving to Mahon Point.

  51. It was very busy,

  52. so everybody was on the hunt for a parking space.

  53. And being a good boy that I am,

  54. I waited patiently for someone to leave so that I could park.

  55. Eventually, I spotted a car move down one of the aisles.

  56. And as I made my way up that row of cars,

  57. guess what happened?

  58. Another car, who had just arrived,

  59. went in ahead of me.

  60. Couldn't believe it.

  61. I won't tell you what I said or what I thought.

  62. I wonder if that's ever happened to you.

  63. So frustrating,

  64. so annoying.

  65. I was there first.

  66. I deserved that parking space.

  67. They were last in line.

  68. It's not right.

  69. And it's not fair.

  70. Well, Jesus has been teaching about who enters the kingdom of heaven.

  71. But it's not as we expect.

  72. Have a look back with me in chapter 19,

  73. verse 14.

  74. Jesus said,

  75. Let the little children come to me.

  76. Now remember,

  77. children in that society were considered nobodies.

  78. They were the least and the last.

  79. But, says Jesus,

  80. do not hinder them,

  81. for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.

  82. And then in contrast,

  83. have a look at verse 23.

  84. Jesus said to his disciples,

  85. Truly I tell you,

  86. it is hard for someone who is rich

  87. to enter the kingdom.

  88. The rich are the people of power and influence.

  89. They are the best and they are first.

  90. But, says Jesus,

  91. it is hard for someone who is rich

  92. to enter the kingdom of heaven.

  93. You see, this is a reversal of the world's values.

  94. It turns everything upside down.

  95. As Jesus concludes in verse 30,

  96. chapter 19,

  97. But many who are first will be last.

  98. And many who are last will be first.

  99. How can this be?

  100. It seems so unfair,

  101. so unjust.

  102. Well, Jesus tells us a parable

  103. so that we might understand

  104. who enters the kingdom.

  105. Chapter 20, verse 1.

  106. For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner

  107. who went out early in the morning

  108. to hire workers for his vineyard.

  109. A parable,

  110. the story that Jesus is telling,

  111. is a practical story

  112. which highlights a spiritual reality.

  113. In other words,

  114. it's a story with a deeper meaning.

  115. So in this parable,

  116. the vineyard represents the kingdom of heaven.

  117. The landowner represents Jesus.

  118. And the workers represent those

  119. who enter the kingdom.

  120. It's a story that shows us

  121. that entrance into the kingdom

  122. is all by grace.

  123. Grace is that key

  124. that opens the door into the kingdom.

  125. So three things I want us to see this morning

  126. from this story.

  127. We're going to look at the welcome of grace,

  128. the scandal of grace,

  129. and the generosity of grace.

  130. Welcome, scandal, and generosity.

  131. So first, the welcome of grace.

  132. Let's read verse 1 again.

  133. For the kingdom of heaven

  134. is like a landowner

  135. who went out early in the morning

  136. to hire workers for his vineyard.

  137. It's a typical scene.

  138. The landowner goes off to the town

  139. to the unemployment centre.

  140. He goes early in the morning.

  141. It's about 6am at sunrise

  142. when the working day started.

  143. And he finds himself some workers.

  144. An arrangement is made

  145. and everybody's happy.

  146. Verse 2,

  147. he agreed to pay them a denarius.

  148. Which, if you have a note

  149. in the bottom of your Bible there,

  150. says it's a daily wage

  151. for a labourer.

  152. Now that's extremely generous

  153. for somebody who would be unskilled.

  154. So he agreed to pay them

  155. a day's wage

  156. and he sent them into the vineyard.

  157. But it seems the landowner

  158. has more room for workers.

  159. So he goes back down to job seekers

  160. and we're told in the text

  161. that four more times he goes.

  162. He goes back at 9am,

  163. 12pm,

  164. 3pm,

  165. and then again at 5pm.

  166. Each time he hires more workers.

  167. Now this isn't a story

  168. about how to reduce the unemployment.

  169. It's a story to tell us

  170. about God's heart.

  171. You see, there's an order here.

  172. Because it appears that the ones

  173. who are up early

  174. and who are first in the queue,

  175. well, they're the ones that get hired.

  176. They're fit and healthy.

  177. They're the best of the bunch.

  178. They get employed first.

  179. And as the day goes by,

  180. the standard of employee

  181. begins to drop significantly.

  182. As the best have been taken,

  183. so the dregs are left behind.

  184. The lazy,

  185. the good for nothing,

  186. the weak.

  187. The ones who always arrive late

  188. and go home early.

  189. You know the type.

  190. Always taking their smoke break

  191. and their tea break.

  192. They're the best of the people

  193. faffing about,

  194. wasting their day.

  195. But that doesn't seem

  196. to bother the landowner.

  197. Verse 6.

  198. About five in the afternoon,

  199. he went out and found

  200. still others standing around.

  201. He asked them,

  202. why have you been standing here

  203. all day long doing nothing?

  204. They're just hanging about,

  205. idle.

  206. Verse 7.

  207. Because no one has hired us.

  208. I wonder why.

  209. He said to them,

  210. you also go and work

  211. in my vineyard.

  212. You see,

  213. it's not just the best

  214. and the brightest

  215. who get employed,

  216. but it's also the least

  217. and the last.

  218. Because when it comes

  219. to the kingdom of heaven,

  220. no one is outside

  221. the welcome of God's grace.

  222. It's like this.

  223. Perhaps you know someone

  224. who heard the gospel.

  225. Maybe this is you.

  226. You heard the gospel

  227. and you responded straight away.

  228. You repented of your sins.

  229. You turned to faith in Jesus.

  230. You were baptized

  231. as a sign of your desire

  232. to follow him.

  233. You've been committed

  234. to your local church.

  235. You serve and you give

  236. as you're able.

  237. In fact,

  238. your whole life

  239. has been about

  240. putting the kingdom first.

  241. But maybe you know others

  242. who also hear the gospel.

  243. They've heard it

  244. many, many times.

  245. But they ignore it

  246. and they reject it.

  247. They make false commitments

  248. and promises.

  249. Oh yes,

  250. I'll be there.

  251. I'm going to change my life

  252. for real this time.

  253. But living as they please

  254. and they think of no one else

  255. but themselves.

  256. But then late on in life,

  257. they do turn in repentance

  258. and put their faith

  259. in Christ.

  260. What do you think of that?

  261. put yourself into this story.

  262. Think of yourself

  263. as the landowner.

  264. Who would you employ?

  265. Well,

  266. as I thought about it,

  267. I would only employ

  268. the 6am workers.

  269. I might

  270. employ the 9am ones too.

  271. But I'm certainly

  272. not going to employ

  273. anybody after that.

  274. Certainly not the 5pm hangabouts.

  275. But when it comes

  276. to the kingdom of heaven,

  277. no one

  278. is written off.

  279. Those who avail

  280. of the opportunity

  281. and respond straight away

  282. and those who

  283. misuse the opportunity

  284. and respond late,

  285. they're both

  286. welcome.

  287. Now this is

  288. good news

  289. for you and I.

  290. because perhaps

  291. you feel

  292. you've wasted

  293. your life.

  294. Maybe you feel

  295. you've blown it.

  296. Used every opportunity

  297. and chance

  298. you could possibly get.

  299. And everybody else

  300. just writes you off.

  301. But God

  302. writes no one off.

  303. You see,

  304. it doesn't matter

  305. whether you're a 6am-er

  306. or a 5pm-er.

  307. Know this.

  308. Today

  309. is an opportunity

  310. to respond

  311. to the good

  312. and gracious

  313. call of God.

  314. Don't waste it.

  315. The landowner

  316. is looking

  317. to hire

  318. workers

  319. for the vineyard.

  320. and we are

  321. all

  322. welcomed.

  323. So,

  324. the welcome

  325. of grace.

  326. Second,

  327. there's

  328. scandalous

  329. grace.

  330. Read with me

  331. verse 8.

  332. When evening

  333. came,

  334. when the day's

  335. work had been

  336. done,

  337. the owner

  338. of the vineyard

  339. said to his

  340. foreman,

  341. call the workers

  342. and pay them

  343. their wages,

  344. beginning with

  345. the last ones

  346. hired and going

  347. on to the first.

  348. Now,

  349. that just seems

  350. all out of place,

  351. doesn't it?

  352. Surely,

  353. the ones who

  354. were hired

  355. first

  356. should get

  357. paid first.

  358. But this all

  359. seems to be

  360. round the wrong

  361. way.

  362. The last ones

  363. getting paid

  364. first,

  365. I mean,

  366. that's scandalous.

  367. There's both

  368. a surprise

  369. and a shock.

  370. Look at the

  371. surprise in

  372. verse 9.

  373. The workers

  374. who were hired

  375. about five

  376. in the afternoon

  377. came and

  378. each received

  379. a denarius,

  380. a full day's

  381. wage.

  382. Those who

  383. had started

  384. late,

  385. who had got

  386. hired last,

  387. who only

  388. got to work

  389. one hour,

  390. if even

  391. that,

  392. also get

  393. a full

  394. day's

  395. wage.

  396. Well,

  397. you think,

  398. if the

  399. landowner

  400. is so

  401. generous

  402. to these

  403. guys,

  404. it can

  405. only mean

  406. one thing.

  407. Verse 10.

  408. So,

  409. when those

  410. who were

  411. hired first,

  412. they received,

  413. expected to

  414. receive more.

  415. I mean,

  416. the landowner

  417. is going to

  418. give us a

  419. bonus here

  420. for what

  421. we've done.

  422. but each

  423. one of them

  424. also

  425. received a

  426. denarius.

  427. They're

  428. shocked.

  429. They're

  430. stunned.

  431. It's a

  432. complete reversal

  433. of how

  434. we do

  435. things.

  436. You see,

  437. in the

  438. world's

  439. economy,

  440. it's all

  441. about

  442. performance.

  443. Everything

  444. is measured

  445. by what

  446. I do.

  447. We learn

  448. it from

  449. when we

  450. are small,

  451. don't we?

  452. get your

  453. homework

  454. right and

  455. I'll give

  456. you a

  457. gold star.

  458. Keep your

  459. room tidy

  460. and you'll

  461. get more

  462. pocket money.

  463. Win the

  464. race or

  465. win your

  466. match and

  467. people are

  468. going to

  469. love you.

  470. Gets a

  471. little bit

  472. more sophisticated

  473. but it's

  474. the same

  475. as we get

  476. older.

  477. Work hard

  478. and you'll

  479. get the

  480. promotion.

  481. Look well

  482. and keep

  483. fit and

  484. you will

  485. have the

  486. partner of

  487. your choice.

  488. better

  489. yourself

  490. and you

  491. will have

  492. a better

  493. life.

  494. Performance,

  495. performance,

  496. performance.

  497. Do well

  498. and you

  499. will get

  500. what you

  501. want.

  502. Do badly

  503. and you

  504. will lose

  505. out forever.

  506. That's the

  507. message we've

  508. grown up

  509. with.

  510. And that's

  511. what we

  512. think is

  513. the message

  514. about the

  515. kingdom of

  516. heaven.

  517. Well,

  518. the way

  519. of the

  520. kingdom

  521. is not

  522. the way

  523. of the

  524. world.

  525. world.

  526. It's

  527. never

  528. about

  529. our

  530. performance

  531. but God's

  532. acceptance

  533. of us

  534. in Christ.

  535. You see,

  536. Jesus is

  537. teaching us

  538. that our

  539. performance

  540. counts for

  541. nothing.

  542. If performance

  543. mattered,

  544. then the

  545. ones in

  546. this story

  547. who had

  548. worked

  549. longer and

  550. harder

  551. would have

  552. received

  553. way more.

  554. and if

  555. performance

  556. counted,

  557. then those

  558. who had

  559. worked

  560. shorter

  561. and didn't

  562. even break

  563. a sweat

  564. would have

  565. received

  566. less.

  567. But in

  568. God's

  569. economy,

  570. each one

  571. gets the

  572. same

  573. because it's

  574. all by

  575. grace.

  576. You see,

  577. the only

  578. performance

  579. that counts

  580. is what

  581. Christ has

  582. done for

  583. you.

  584. Christ

  585. does

  586. everything.

  587. Jesus has

  588. lived the

  589. perfect life

  590. for you.

  591. He never

  592. sinned.

  593. He obeyed

  594. God perfectly

  595. for you

  596. and for

  597. me.

  598. He lives

  599. the life

  600. that we

  601. could never

  602. live.

  603. But more

  604. than that,

  605. Jesus dies

  606. our death

  607. for us.

  608. He was

  609. treated as

  610. sinful for

  611. us.

  612. He was

  613. punished for

  614. our disobedience.

  615. Jesus died

  616. the death

  617. that we

  618. deserve.

  619. But as

  620. we simply

  621. trust him

  622. through faith,

  623. we receive

  624. God's

  625. good and

  626. gracious

  627. free gift,

  628. the forgiveness

  629. of all

  630. our sins.

  631. Maybe

  632. there's sin

  633. that's weighing

  634. you down

  635. today.

  636. He forgives

  637. all your

  638. sin.

  639. God's

  640. presence of

  641. the

  642. transforming

  643. spirit,

  644. God

  645. living within

  646. you.

  647. This is

  648. what we

  649. receive.

  650. The joy

  651. of being

  652. adopted

  653. into God's

  654. family to

  655. talk to the

  656. creator of

  657. the universe

  658. as our

  659. father who

  660. gives good

  661. gifts continually

  662. to his

  663. children,

  664. the support

  665. of his

  666. family,

  667. brothers and

  668. sisters around

  669. us today,

  670. the guarantee

  671. of life in

  672. God's

  673. eternal

  674. kingdom where

  675. everything will

  676. be put

  677. right.

  678. All

  679. freely

  680. given

  681. to you

  682. to receive

  683. because of

  684. what Christ

  685. has done

  686. for you.

  687. Our

  688. performance

  689. counts for

  690. nothing,

  691. zilch,

  692. zero,

  693. nada.

  694. The only

  695. performance that

  696. counts is what

  697. Christ has

  698. done.

  699. God

  700. pays out

  701. to us

  702. what

  703. someone else

  704. has earned

  705. for us.

  706. God

  707. pays out

  708. to you

  709. today

  710. what

  711. Christ has

  712. earned

  713. for you.

  714. That's the

  715. scandal

  716. of grace.

  717. So there's

  718. the welcome,

  719. there's the

  720. scandal,

  721. and there's

  722. generous

  723. grace.

  724. Look at

  725. verse 11.

  726. When those

  727. who had

  728. been hired

  729. first,

  730. when they

  731. received

  732. their pay,

  733. they began

  734. to grumble

  735. against the

  736. landowner.

  737. These who

  738. were hired

  739. last worked

  740. only one

  741. hour,

  742. they said,

  743. people

  744. and you've

  745. made them

  746. equal to

  747. us,

  748. who have

  749. borne the

  750. burden of

  751. the work

  752. and the

  753. heat of

  754. the day.

  755. Time to

  756. get the

  757. unions

  758. involved.

  759. This is

  760. outrageous.

  761. I mean,

  762. who wouldn't

  763. be annoyed?

  764. These guys

  765. have done

  766. little to

  767. nothing,

  768. and they're

  769. getting the

  770. same.

  771. I have

  772. sympathy for

  773. those who

  774. are up at

  775. 6am to

  776. go to

  777. work,

  778. these hard

  779. working

  780. people.

  781. If that

  782. were you

  783. and I in

  784. this situation,

  785. we'd be out,

  786. wouldn't

  787. be,

  788. with our

  789. placards,

  790. equal pay,

  791. taking to

  792. social media.

  793. It's

  794. completely

  795. unfair.

  796. Where's the

  797. justice in

  798. any of

  799. this?

  800. Verse 13.

  801. But the

  802. landowner

  803. answered one

  804. of them,

  805. I am not

  806. being unfair

  807. to you,

  808. friend.

  809. Didn't you

  810. agree to

  811. work for

  812. a denarius?

  813. Take your

  814. pay and

  815. go.

  816. You see,

  817. the landowner

  818. has cheated

  819. no one.

  820. He's treated

  821. everyone

  822. fairly.

  823. They got

  824. paid what

  825. was agreed.

  826. In fact,

  827. they've all

  828. got more

  829. than what

  830. they deserved.

  831. You see,

  832. we need to

  833. remember that

  834. what we

  835. receive from

  836. God is

  837. not because

  838. of our

  839. performance,

  840. but because

  841. of his

  842. grace to

  843. us.

  844. You see,

  845. at one

  846. level,

  847. these guys

  848. are right

  849. to grumble.

  850. We associate

  851. with them,

  852. don't we?

  853. We feel

  854. their heartache

  855. and their

  856. pain.

  857. This is

  858. not fair.

  859. But that's

  860. the point.

  861. You see,

  862. think about it.

  863. If God

  864. were to

  865. treat us

  866. fairly,

  867. we would

  868. get nothing.

  869. If God

  870. were to

  871. treat us

  872. justly,

  873. then we

  874. would have

  875. to pay for

  876. our own

  877. sin,

  878. and we

  879. would have

  880. to face

  881. his wrath.

  882. If it's

  883. fairness from

  884. God that

  885. we want,

  886. then hell

  887. is what

  888. we've

  889. earned and

  890. what we

  891. deserve.

  892. You see,

  893. grace by

  894. definition

  895. is never

  896. fair.

  897. Because grace

  898. is receiving

  899. what we

  900. cannot earn

  901. and what we

  902. don't deserve.

  903. That's

  904. not fair.

  905. But are we

  906. going to

  907. grumble

  908. about that?

  909. I don't

  910. think so.

  911. Three things.

  912. to think

  913. about as

  914. we close

  915. that we

  916. must get

  917. to grips

  918. with.

  919. Here's the

  920. first.

  921. God

  922. desires

  923. to give

  924. grace.

  925. Look at

  926. verse 14.

  927. The

  928. landowner,

  929. take

  930. your pay

  931. and go.

  932. I

  933. want to

  934. give the

  935. one who

  936. was hired

  937. last

  938. the same

  939. as I

  940. gave you.

  941. I

  942. want to

  943. give.

  944. God

  945. is not

  946. a mean,

  947. tight-fisted,

  948. vengeful

  949. God

  950. looking to

  951. squash any

  952. unsuspecting

  953. sinner.

  954. No,

  955. God is

  956. generous.

  957. He

  958. longs to

  959. give

  960. grace.

  961. Consider

  962. how God

  963. has revealed

  964. his character

  965. to us.

  966. Just look

  967. with me,

  968. please.

  969. Keep your

  970. finger in

  971. Matthew 20

  972. and just

  973. jump back

  974. to Psalm

  975. 103.

  976. Psalm

  977. 103.

  978. Psalm

  979. 103.

  980. Psalm

  981. 103.

  982. And let's

  983. just take in

  984. God's

  985. character,

  986. how he

  987. describes

  988. himself,

  989. how he

  990. reveals his

  991. nature to

  992. us.

  993. The

  994. psalmist is

  995. recording a

  996. terrible event

  997. in Israel's

  998. past,

  999. where they

  1000. sinned awfully.

  1001. But this was

  1002. the response.

  1003. Verse 7.

  1004. God made

  1005. known his

  1006. ways to

  1007. Moses,

  1008. his deeds

  1009. to the

  1010. people of

  1011. Israel.

  1012. The

  1013. Lord is

  1014. compassionate

  1015. and gracious,

  1016. slow to

  1017. anger,

  1018. abounding

  1019. in love.

  1020. He will

  1021. not always

  1022. accuse.

  1023. He will

  1024. not harbour

  1025. his anger

  1026. forever.

  1027. He does

  1028. not treat

  1029. us as our

  1030. sins deserve

  1031. or repay

  1032. us according

  1033. to our

  1034. iniquities.

  1035. For as

  1036. high as the

  1037. heavens are

  1038. above the

  1039. earth, so

  1040. great is

  1041. his love

  1042. for those

  1043. who fear

  1044. him.

  1045. As far

  1046. as the

  1047. east is

  1048. from the

  1049. west, so

  1050. far has

  1051. he removed

  1052. our

  1053. transgressions

  1054. from us.

  1055. I want to

  1056. sing that

  1057. song again,

  1058. don't you?

  1059. Back to

  1060. Matthew 20.

  1061. God does

  1062. not ignore

  1063. our sin.

  1064. It says

  1065. very clearly

  1066. he will deal

  1067. with it, but

  1068. his heart is

  1069. one of

  1070. compassion.

  1071. He is

  1072. abounding

  1073. in love.

  1074. He desires

  1075. to give

  1076. grace.

  1077. And this

  1078. is the

  1079. God who

  1080. comes to

  1081. each one

  1082. of us

  1083. today.

  1084. Whoever we

  1085. are, whatever

  1086. you have

  1087. done, he

  1088. loves you.

  1089. He loves

  1090. you.

  1091. His heart

  1092. is for

  1093. you.

  1094. God desires

  1095. to give

  1096. grace.

  1097. Second, God

  1098. distributes

  1099. his grace

  1100. as he

  1101. pleases.

  1102. Look at

  1103. verse 15,

  1104. Matthew

    Matthew 20:15

  1105. chapter 20,

  1106. verse 15.

  1107. Don't I

  1108. have the

  1109. right to

  1110. do what

  1111. I want

  1112. with

  1113. my

  1114. own

  1115. money?

  1116. me?

  1117. Or are

  1118. you

  1119. envious

  1120. because I

  1121. am

  1122. generous?

  1123. Again, it's

  1124. speaking of

  1125. God, isn't

  1126. it?

  1127. Grace

  1128. is God's.

  1129. Grace

  1130. belongs to

  1131. God's.

  1132. It's his

  1133. property.

  1134. Therefore, it's

  1135. for God to

  1136. give as

  1137. he pleases.

  1138. I don't

  1139. have any

  1140. right to

  1141. it.

  1142. You have

  1143. no claim

  1144. to it.

  1145. So who

  1146. are any

  1147. of us

  1148. to say

  1149. God

  1150. can't

  1151. give

  1152. grace to

  1153. this

  1154. person

  1155. or he

  1156. can't

  1157. give

  1158. grace to

  1159. that

  1160. person?

  1161. Who

  1162. are we

  1163. to tell

  1164. God

  1165. what to

  1166. do

  1167. with his

  1168. grace?

  1169. We need

  1170. to understand

  1171. that what

  1172. God does

  1173. is always

  1174. right.

  1175. He

  1176. discerns,

  1177. he

  1178. decides,

  1179. and he

  1180. distributes

  1181. as he

  1182. pleases.

  1183. It might

  1184. seem

  1185. unfair

  1186. to us,

  1187. but we

  1188. can be

  1189. sure that

  1190. everything

  1191. God does

  1192. is always

  1193. fair and

  1194. always

  1195. just.

  1196. With

  1197. God, no

  1198. one is

  1199. ever

  1200. treated

  1201. unfairly.

  1202. Ever.

  1203. So he

  1204. desires,

  1205. he

  1206. distributes,

  1207. and

  1208. God

  1209. demands

  1210. grace

  1211. from

  1212. those

  1213. who

  1214. receive

  1215. grace.

  1216. Grace

  1217. is always

  1218. unearned

  1219. and undeserved,

  1220. so none

  1221. of us

  1222. here can

  1223. think of

  1224. ourselves

  1225. as superior

  1226. to anyone

  1227. else,

  1228. and none

  1229. of us

  1230. need to

  1231. feel

  1232. inferior

  1233. to anyone

  1234. else.

  1235. Let's

  1236. just read

  1237. verse 11

  1238. and 12

  1239. again.

  1240. when they

  1241. had received

  1242. it,

  1243. their day's

  1244. wage,

  1245. they began

  1246. to grumble

  1247. against the

  1248. landowner.

  1249. Those who

  1250. were hired

  1251. last worked

  1252. only one

  1253. hour,

  1254. they said,

  1255. and you

  1256. have made

  1257. them equal

  1258. to us

  1259. who have

  1260. borne the

  1261. burden of

  1262. the work

  1263. and the

  1264. heat of

  1265. the day.

  1266. grace

  1267. does.

  1268. It makes

  1269. us all

  1270. equal.

  1271. It levels

  1272. the playing

  1273. field.

  1274. It doesn't

  1275. matter who

  1276. you are

  1277. or where

  1278. you come

  1279. from.

  1280. It doesn't

  1281. matter your

  1282. background,

  1283. your position,

  1284. your status,

  1285. the address,

  1286. the colour

  1287. of your skin.

  1288. The only

  1289. reason any

  1290. of us can

  1291. give for

  1292. being in

  1293. the kingdom

  1294. of God

  1295. is grace.

  1296. I cannot

  1297. claim to be

  1298. better than

  1299. you,

  1300. and you

  1301. cannot claim

  1302. to be

  1303. better than

  1304. me.

  1305. Now,

  1306. at one

  1307. level,

  1308. that's easy

  1309. for us

  1310. to say,

  1311. isn't it?

  1312. But it's

  1313. sure hard,

  1314. very difficult

  1315. to live.

  1316. Perhaps

  1317. you're

  1318. thinking about

  1319. someone in

  1320. particular.

  1321. Maybe

  1322. someone has

  1323. hurt you.

  1324. Maybe

  1325. somebody has

  1326. wronged

  1327. you.

  1328. Trust has

  1329. been broken,

  1330. lies have

  1331. been told,

  1332. repentance

  1333. has not

  1334. been

  1335. forthcoming.

  1336. Well,

  1337. the last

  1338. thing we

  1339. want to

  1340. do for

  1341. that person

  1342. is show

  1343. them grace,

  1344. right?

  1345. Let's be

  1346. honest.

  1347. We want

  1348. them to get

  1349. what they

  1350. deserve,

  1351. so I

  1352. won't talk

  1353. to them.

  1354. We want

  1355. them to get

  1356. what they

  1357. earn,

  1358. so I will

  1359. make sure

  1360. they feel

  1361. what I

  1362. feel.

  1363. well,

  1364. let's

  1365. together

  1366. this

  1367. morning

  1368. look

  1369. afresh

  1370. into the

  1371. mirror of

  1372. God's

  1373. grace.

  1374. And as

  1375. we look

  1376. into the

  1377. mirror of

  1378. God's

  1379. grace,

  1380. what do

  1381. we see?

  1382. One who

  1383. has received

  1384. undeserved

  1385. grace.

  1386. We have

  1387. no claim,

  1388. we have

  1389. no right,

  1390. but through

  1391. Christ we

  1392. have received

  1393. his gracious

  1394. favour and

  1395. blessing.

  1396. Look into

  1397. the mirror

  1398. and we

  1399. will see

  1400. that we're

  1401. all equal.

  1402. Because the

  1403. evidence that

  1404. I have

  1405. received

  1406. grace,

  1407. the evidence

  1408. that you

  1409. have received

  1410. grace,

  1411. is that you

  1412. will show

  1413. grace to

  1414. others.

  1415. I will

  1416. welcome others

  1417. just as

  1418. Christ has

  1419. welcomed me.

  1420. I will

  1421. be scandalous

  1422. in my

  1423. dealings with

  1424. others,

  1425. in my

  1426. generosity

  1427. towards

  1428. them.

  1429. How we

  1430. treat each

  1431. other

  1432. will tell

  1433. us if

  1434. I am a

  1435. bitter

  1436. grumbler

  1437. who angrily

  1438. holds on

  1439. to grace

  1440. or a

  1441. generous

  1442. giver who

  1443. desires to

  1444. distribute

  1445. his grace.

  1446. grace.

  1447. What are

  1448. you today?

  1449. Are you a

  1450. bitter grumbler

  1451. withholding

  1452. grace from

  1453. someone?

  1454. Or are you a

  1455. generous giver

  1456. who desires to

  1457. distribute that

  1458. grace?

  1459. grace?

  1460. So,

  1461. verse 16,

  1462. the last

  1463. will be

  1464. first

  1465. and the

  1466. first

  1467. will be

  1468. last.

  1469. In God's

  1470. economy,

  1471. everything is

  1472. turned upside

  1473. down.

  1474. No superiority

  1475. and no

  1476. inferiority.

  1477. All are

  1478. equal.

  1479. grace is

  1480. the key

  1481. that will

  1482. open the

  1483. door to

  1484. the kingdom

  1485. of heaven.

  1486. Let's just

  1487. take a moment

  1488. to reflect

  1489. as we

  1490. pray.

  1491. Amen.

  1492. Amen.

  1493. Amen.

  1494. Amen.

  1495. Amen.

  1496. Amen.

  1497. Amen.

  1498. Amen.

  1499. Amen.

  1500. Amen.

  1501. Amen.

  1502. Amen.

  1503. Amen.

  1504. Amen.

  1505. Amen.

  1506. Amen.

  1507. Amen.

  1508. Amen.

  1509. Amen.

  1510. Father, thank

  1511. you for the

  1512. welcome of

  1513. your grace

  1514. to us.

  1515. Thank you

  1516. for that

  1517. surprising,

  1518. shocking

  1519. grace

  1520. that gives

  1521. to us more

  1522. than we could

  1523. ever expect

  1524. or imagine.

  1525. Thank you,

  1526. Father, for

  1527. your generosity

  1528. to us.

  1529. Undeserving

  1530. as we are,

  1531. yet you have

  1532. made us

  1533. rich.

  1534. We praise

  1535. you, we

  1536. thank you.

  1537. Help us

  1538. to be

  1539. changed by

  1540. your grace

  1541. that we

  1542. are no longer

  1543. a bitter

  1544. grumbler

  1545. but a

  1546. generous

  1547. giver.

  1548. Change

  1549. your hearts.

  1550. Mould

  1551. us and

  1552. shape us.

  1553. Father,

  1554. in your

  1555. goodness,

  1556. pour out

  1557. your grace

  1558. upon us

  1559. afresh.

  1560. In

  1561. Jesus'

  1562. name.

  1563. Amen.

  1564. Well,

  1565. we're going

  1566. to sing a

  1567. well-known

  1568. song.

  1569. Amazing

  1570. grace,

  1571. how sweet

  1572. the sound.

  1573. It's grace

  1574. that begins

  1575. the journey,

  1576. grace that

  1577. will keep

  1578. us on

  1579. the journey

  1580. and grace

  1581. that will

  1582. see us

  1583. through to

  1584. our home

  1585. with Him.

  1586. It's not

  1587. because of

  1588. us.

  1589. Thank you.
