  1. I'm a silly Billy. Sorry, thank you Monica.

  2. I've just made a mess. I always make a mess.

  3. I've spilt my drink all over the floor.

  4. As we're getting this cleaned up, I wonder, Natasha and Karina, where's Karina?

  5. Oh yeah, yeah. You speak a little English.

  6. Okay. I wonder, just to help, if some of the younger people, if you wanted to sit a little closer and you could do Google Translate,

  7. through the sermon, just a few words and sentences. Is that possible?

  8. Yeah, are any of you able to do that? Did you understand me?

  9. If anybody, I don't know how to do it, that's all.

  10. Okay.

  11. Thank you.

  12. Thank you.

  13. So let's open our Bibles to Romans.

  14. Romans chapter 5.

    Romans 5 chapter mention

  15. Can you do it?

  16. Yes, so we're going to do a Google Translate.

  17. You can help.

  18. Well done.

  19. Thank you.

  20. Yes.

  21. Anybody, can you go to German?

  22. Okay.

  23. Do you speak German?

  24. No.

  25. No.

  26. Good try.

  27. Trevor, can you do it as well?

  28. I can get the Bible verses.

  29. Yeah.

  30. Yeah, just move around.

  31. It's okay.

  32. I don't mind people walking around and move your seats a bit closer.

  33. Yeah.

  34. Okay.

  35. So we're looking at Romans.

  36. Okay.

  37. So please, just help.

  38. Just help.

  39. That's all we're asking.

  40. You can move your seats.

  41. Isabel, if you want to move your seats across the aisle, it's right.

  42. You're very good.

  43. Thank you.

  44. So, Romans chapter 5.

    Romans 5 chapter mention

  45. And we're going to read verses 1 to 11.

  46. Yeah, just show if you've got it there.

  47. You can just pass it over and they'll follow along.

  48. Romans 5, 1 to 11.

  49. Therefore, since we have been justified through faith,

  50. we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,

  51. through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand.

  52. And we boast in the hope of the glory of God.

  53. Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings

  54. because we know that suffering produces perseverance,

  55. perseverance character, and character hope.

  56. And hope does not put us to shame

  57. because God's love has been poured into our hearts

  58. through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.

  59. You see, at just the right time,

  60. when we were still powerless,

  61. Christ died for the ungodly.

  62. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person,

  63. though for a good person,

  64. someone might possibly dare to die.

  65. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this.

  66. While we were still sinners,

  67. Christ died for us.

  68. Since we have now been justified by his blood,

  69. how much more shall we be saved from God's wrath through him?

  70. For if, while we were God's enemies,

  71. we were reconciled to him through the death of his son,

  72. how much more, having been reconciled,

  73. shall we be saved through his life?

  74. Not only is this so,

  75. but we also boast in God

  76. through our Lord Jesus Christ,

  77. through whom we have now received reconciliation.

  78. So we're going to pray and ask for God's help.

  79. Our Father God, thank you for your word.

  80. Thank you for your Holy Spirit.

  81. Thank you that you speak our language.

  82. You communicate with us.

  83. And we ask that you would help us all today

  84. that we may understand something of your word and your truth,

  85. that it may build us up in our walk with you,

  86. that we may all leave encouraged and refreshed.

  87. In Jesus' name.

  88. Amen.

  89. Amen.

  90. So as we start, I have two questions.

  91. Here's the first question.

  92. Can you explain the gospel?

  93. If someone asked you,

  94. what's the gospel?

  95. What's it all about?

  96. Would you be able to give an answer?

  97. Can you explain the gospel?

  98. The second question is related but different.

  99. Have you experienced the gospel?

  100. Do you know what effect or what change it brings in your life?

  101. You see, the gospel isn't just something that we know in our heads.

  102. It's something that's to be lived in our life.

  103. We're not just to understand the gospel,

  104. but we are to enjoy the gospel.

  105. So before we go any further,

  106. we're going to explain what the gospel is.

  107. And the gospel can be explained

  108. by using two words that we find in our text.

  109. One is a legal word and one is a relational word.

  110. Here's the first one, justification.

  111. Look at verse one.

  112. Therefore, since we have been justified through faith.

  113. This little phrase justified by or through faith summarises all of chapters one to four.

  114. It's all about what Jesus has done for us.

  115. Jesus Christ came into the world to exchange places with you and I.

  116. That's what we see at the end of verse eight.

  117. End of verse eight.

  118. While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

  119. Jesus takes our place.

  120. He takes our record of sin on himself.

  121. And in its place, he gives us his record of righteousness.

  122. So our sin, he takes.

  123. His righteousness, he gives.

  124. In other words, Jesus is treated as we deserve to be treated.

  125. So that by faith, we are treated as Jesus deserves to be treated.

  126. And that's what it means to be justified by faith.

  127. We are declared right with God.

  128. We're put into a right relationship.

  129. It's a legal term and it gives us a status that can't be changed.

  130. So we are right with God.

  131. The second word is reconciliation.

  132. These are the results or the effects of justification.

  133. So look down at verse 11.

  134. Not only is this so, but we also boast in God through our Lord Jesus Christ,

  135. through whom we have now received reconciliation.

  136. So reconciliation means that we can now enjoy a living and vibrant relationship with Jesus today.

  137. We're no longer his enemies, but we're now his friends.

  138. And it's all possible because of what Jesus has done.

  139. That's a relational status.

  140. It's something to enjoy.

  141. So you see, the gospel isn't just something we need to explain.

  142. It is something to be experienced.

  143. It's not just something we know in our heads.

  144. It's something to enjoy and to live out of our hearts.

  145. So what we want to do today is to discover and think about what it means to enjoy the gospel every day.

  146. How can I enjoy the gospel?

  147. Not just know it, but enjoy it.

  148. So here we go.

  149. The first one is experience the gospel.

  150. Let's read verses 1 and 2.

  151. Therefore, since we have been justified through faith,

  152. we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,

  153. through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand,

  154. and we boast in the hope of the glory of God.

  155. So did you see those three things?

  156. Because of what Jesus has done, we have peace with God.

  157. We now stand in his grace, and we have the hope of glory.

  158. There's a past, present, and future.

  159. The peace that came because of what Jesus has done,

  160. the grace in which we now stand,

  161. and the hope of glory that is yet to come.

  162. To help us understand this, I want us to picture this scene.

  163. I want you to think of yourself as standing under a great big waterfall on a hot day.

  164. That water rushing down,

  165. and you're standing underneath the waterfall as it comes rushing down.

  166. It's fresh, and it's cool.

  167. And at the bottom of that waterfall is a great big poo.

  168. And from that poo is a series of other mini waterfalls that flow down to it,

  169. to another poo.

  170. It's a picture of what we have here.

  171. The main poo is the relationship we have with Christ,

  172. because we are justified and reconciled.

  173. And that overflows into peace, grace, and hope.

  174. The gospel is to be experienced as it overflows into our lives.

  175. So we're going to look at these three pools in turn.

  176. The first one is we have peace with God.

  177. Peace isn't just the absence of an enemy,

  178. but it's the presence of a friend.

  179. That's what chapters 1 to 4 is.

  180. It's all about explaining how we were enemies,

  181. how we were under God's just judgment,

  182. but now we have peace with God.

  183. And that peace is not unlike the peace

  184. that was enjoyed in the Garden of Eden.

  185. Humanity in harmony with its creator

  186. and with creation.

  187. There was a sense of safety and security,

  188. a place of well-being and wholeness,

  189. in search of nothing because you have everything,

  190. satisfied and fulfilled.

  191. That's something that we can enjoy today,

  192. a living, vibrant relationship with God.

  193. So we have peace.

  194. The second, we have grace.

  195. See what it says?

  196. We have peace through our Lord Jesus Christ.

  197. Verse 2,

  198. Through whom we have now gained access by faith

  199. into this grace in which we now stand.

  200. Grace is God's continuous generosity towards us,

  201. which is unearned and undeserved.

  202. In practice, it means God no longer treats us

  203. as our sins deserve.

  204. He treats us now as if we were his own son,

  205. loved and treasured.

  206. And because of Jesus,

  207. all our sin is covered,

  208. past, present and future.

  209. And that's something extraordinary

  210. because it means that

  211. when I sin and when I fail,

  212. I don't fall out of favour from God

  213. and I don't have to work my way back into God.

  214. I am always forgiven,

  215. always accepted,

  216. always welcomed,

  217. despite my sin.

  218. We stand safe and secure

  219. in God's grace.

  220. So not only do we have hope and grace

  221. in which we can enjoy,

  222. but we have the hope of glory.

  223. Verse 2,

  224. end of verse 2,

  225. we boast in the hope of the glory of God.

  226. We all know, don't we,

  227. from our own personal experience

  228. that the world we live in

  229. is terribly broken and disordered.

  230. Nations are at war.

  231. Cultures clash.

  232. Families are broken.

  233. Individual lives are wrecked

  234. through abuse and selfish addiction.

  235. None of us gets to go through life

  236. without being untouched by this brokenness.

  237. It affects every one of us.

  238. We get sick.

  239. We die.

  240. We face injustice.

  241. But, as Christians, as believers,

  242. we have the hope of glory to come.

  243. And hope in the Bible

  244. is not,

  245. oh I hope it will happen,

  246. a kind of,

  247. well,

  248. if I work a little bit harder

  249. I might get a bit closer.

  250. Hope in the Bible

  251. is always absolute certainty.

  252. One day

  253. we have the hope of glory

  254. when this world will be renewed and restored.

  255. Paradise promised in all its perfection.

  256. This is ours to enjoy.

  257. Guaranteed and assured.

  258. So this is the gospel.

  259. This is for us not just to know in our head,

  260. but to experience every day.

  261. And the invitation is to come to that waterfall

  262. to experience the flood of grace and mercy

  263. and joy and peace

  264. flowing down on our life.

  265. You see, so often we can spend our time

  266. trying to find enjoyment

  267. in other things.

  268. If only I could find that right job.

  269. If I could get the right partner.

  270. If I could just get that right thing.

  271. Then everything will be okay.

  272. But those pools are stagnant.

  273. We are to experience the gospel

  274. by immersing ourselves in the gospel.

  275. But before we move on,

  276. let's note that these things

  277. can never ever be taken from us.

  278. Look at what it says.

  279. We have peace.

  280. We have gained access to his grace.

  281. And we boast in the hope of glory.

  282. These can never be taken from us

  283. because they have been secured

  284. through the Lord Jesus Christ.

  285. These are benefits of the gospel

  286. that can be never taken

  287. never changed

  288. and never altered.

  289. So we experience the gospel

  290. every day.

  291. The second thing

  292. when it comes to enjoying the gospel

  293. is to know how to apply the gospel.

  294. Working it out in our life.

  295. So read with me verse 3.

  296. Not only so,

  297. but we also glory in our sufferings

  298. or we rejoice in our sufferings.

  299. Did you read that carefully?

  300. Did you?

  301. That's hard, isn't it?

  302. Rejoice in our sufferings

  303. or glory in our sufferings?

  304. That's hard because I know that many of you

  305. suffer in different ways.

  306. We've just said we live in a world

  307. that is broken,

  308. disordered and distorted.

  309. Not just the physical world,

  310. but our own personal lives.

  311. As we go through our life,

  312. we experience suffering

  313. in all kinds of different ways.

  314. Physically, emotionally and mentally.

  315. And the last thing we feel like doing

  316. is rejoicing.

  317. How am I to rejoice

  318. in my illness?

  319. How am I to be grateful

  320. in my condition?

  321. How am I to see good

  322. in my struggle?

  323. Well, let me make it clear.

  324. Rejoicing doesn't mean

  325. that we jump around the place

  326. with a big smile on our face

  327. as if this is wonderful.

  328. No, it means that through Christ

  329. we now have a new way

  330. at looking at our suffering

  331. which we can rejoice about.

  332. It gives us a different perspective.

  333. You see, most of the time

  334. we see nothing good in suffering.

  335. The only good that can happen

  336. is to get rid of it.

  337. But the Gospel tells us

  338. something different.

  339. Because of the Gospel,

  340. we can look at our suffering

  341. through a different lens

  342. and see that it brings good.

  343. So look at verse 3 again.

  344. Not only so,

  345. but we also glory or rejoice

  346. in our sufferings

  347. because we know

  348. that suffering produces

  349. perseverance,

  350. perseverance character

  351. and character hope.

  352. It builds perseverance.

  353. You know, as we journey through life,

  354. as we walk through life,

  355. there'll be many times

  356. we want to give up and give in.

  357. It's too much of a struggle,

  358. too much of a burden.

  359. But through our suffering,

  360. we learn our dependence on God

  361. and as we depend upon Him,

  362. so we persevere.

  363. He gives us the ability

  364. to keep on going.

  365. He gives us the strength

  366. to carry on.

  367. So through our suffering,

  368. we build perseverance.

  369. And that has a knock-on effect

  370. because it builds our character.

  371. Have you noticed

  372. that some of the most generous-hearted,

  373. kind-loving people

  374. are those who suffer?

  375. Why is it that those

  376. who suffer the most

  377. care for others the most?

  378. Because the Gospel

  379. has taught them

  380. that through suffering,

  381. they have patience,

  382. understanding,

  383. and empathy.

  384. They can come alongside people

  385. who are also suffering

  386. and say,

  387. you know what?

  388. I've been there.

  389. I know what it feels like.

  390. And let me show you

  391. a God

  392. who will hold you

  393. and keep you

  394. and never let you go.

  395. You see,

  396. the perseverance

  397. that God gives us,

  398. the strength He gives us,

  399. changes our character

  400. so that we

  401. are able to draw

  402. alongside others

  403. to help them

  404. in their suffering.

  405. But there's a third link

  406. to this chain.

  407. Not only perseverance

  408. and character,

  409. but it builds hope.

  410. You see,

  411. when we're fit

  412. and healthy

  413. and all is good,

  414. heaven and our eternal rest

  415. can seem irrelevant

  416. and not required.

  417. But when suffering comes,

  418. it reminds us

  419. that this earth

  420. is not our home.

  421. We're longing

  422. for something better

  423. and greater.

  424. Suffering fuels

  425. our desire

  426. to be finished

  427. with the struggles

  428. of this world.

  429. to be released

  430. from our decaying bodies,

  431. to be set free

  432. from our tortured minds.

  433. Suffering builds

  434. within us

  435. an anticipation

  436. and an expectation

  437. of our final home.

  438. So all of these

  439. knock-on effects.

  440. God strengthens us

  441. to give us perseverance

  442. that builds

  443. and changes

  444. our character

  445. so that we are able

  446. to help those

  447. who are suffering

  448. and together

  449. it creates

  450. an astounding

  451. expectation

  452. of the glory

  453. that is to come.

  454. You see,

  455. because of the gospel,

  456. we can rejoice

  457. in our suffering.

  458. Do you see

  459. what it says there?

  460. Glory

  461. or rejoice

  462. in.

  463. It doesn't say

  464. glory

  465. about your sufferings.

  466. There's nothing

  467. good

  468. about suffering

  469. in and of itself.

  470. But we can glory

  471. in it

  472. because we now

  473. have a new perspective,

  474. a new way

  475. of thinking

  476. about it.

  477. Well,

  478. you say,

  479. that sounds great.

  480. But how can I

  481. know that

  482. as a reality

  483. in my life?

  484. Well,

  485. look at verse 5.

  486. And hope

  487. does not

  488. put us

  489. to shame

  490. because God's

  491. love has been

  492. poured into

  493. our hearts

  494. through the Holy

  495. Spirit

  496. who has been

  497. given to us.

  498. We know

  499. God loves us

  500. because he's

  501. proved his love

  502. by dying for us

  503. on the cross.

  504. But we just

  505. don't want to

  506. know that

  507. in our heads.

  508. We want to

  509. experience that

  510. in our life.

  511. And how does

  512. that come about?

  513. By the work

  514. of the Holy Spirit

  515. who pours,

  516. who takes

  517. the demonstrated

  518. love of God

  519. and pours

  520. that into

  521. our life

  522. so that

  523. even in

  524. our suffering

  525. we know

  526. that he loves

  527. us because

  528. he's producing

  529. perseverance,

  530. character

  531. and hope.

  532. So think of

  533. yourself under

  534. that roaring

  535. fountain

  536. or that

  537. waterfall

  538. cascading

  539. down upon

  540. you,

  541. the love

  542. of God

  543. pouring down

  544. on your life.

  545. The Holy

  546. Spirit

  547. internalises

  548. that

  549. so that

  550. we know

  551. even in

  552. our most

  553. difficult

  554. times

  555. God is

  556. doing a

  557. work in

  558. our life

  559. for good

  560. and for

  561. his glory.

  562. So

  563. we apply

  564. the gospel.

  565. We experience

  566. it.

  567. And third,

  568. we're to

  569. remember

  570. the gospel.

  571. You see,

  572. if we're to

  573. know this

  574. gospel,

  575. if we're to

  576. experience it

  577. in our life,

  578. we need to

  579. remember what

  580. it's all about.

  581. How do we

  582. remember?

  583. Well,

  584. two very

  585. simple things

  586. that we should

  587. all know.

  588. We remember

  589. it by

  590. focusing

  591. on the

  592. cross.

  593. Look at

  594. verse 6.

  595. You see,

  596. at just

  597. the right

  598. time,

  599. when we

  600. were still

  601. powerless,

  602. Christ died

  603. for the

  604. ungodly.

  605. Very rarely

  606. will anyone

  607. die for a

  608. righteous

  609. person,

  610. though for a

  611. good person

  612. someone might

  613. possibly dare

  614. to die.

  615. But God

  616. demonstrates

  617. his own

  618. love for us

  619. in this.

  620. While we

  621. were still

  622. sinners,

  623. Christ died

  624. for us.

  625. It reminds

  626. us of

  627. what we

  628. were like.

  629. Do you

  630. see what it

  631. says there

  632. in verse

  633. 10?

  634. Or,

  635. sorry,

  636. verse 6

  637. and verse

  638. 7?

  639. That we

  640. were ungodly.

  641. We were

  642. sinners,

  643. enemies of

  644. God.

  645. But perhaps

  646. what is most

  647. revealing is

  648. it tells us

  649. we were

  650. powerless,

  651. verse 6.

  652. No one

  653. has the

  654. power to

  655. change their

  656. relationship

  657. with God.

  658. Nobody has

  659. the inner

  660. resources to

  661. make God

  662. love us

  663. or for God

  664. to change

  665. us.

  666. It is

  667. something that

  668. God does

  669. for us.

  670. He takes

  671. the initiative.

  672. He intervenes

  673. in our life.

  674. He's the one

  675. who dies

  676. for us.

  677. Twice it

  678. tells us,

  679. in verse 6

  680. and in

  681. verse 8,

  682. Christ

  683. died

  684. for us

  685. because he

  686. loves us.

  687. He loves

  688. us deeply.

  689. So as we

  690. remind ourselves

  691. of this gospel

  692. truth that he

  693. intervened into

  694. our life

  695. to die for

  696. us so that

  697. we could

  698. experience his

  699. peace,

  700. his grace,

  701. his hope,

  702. so that we

  703. could rejoice

  704. in our

  705. suffering and

  706. know that he

  707. is bringing

  708. about perseverance,

  709. that he is

  710. bringing about

  711. strength to

  712. our life,

  713. changing our

  714. character and

  715. giving us

  716. hope.

  717. So we

  718. focus on the

  719. cross and

  720. we focus on

  721. the resurrection.

  722. Look at

  723. verse 10

  724. with me.

  725. For if

  726. while we

  727. were God's

  728. enemies,

  729. we were

  730. reconciled to

  731. him through

  732. the death

  733. of his

  734. son,

  735. how much

  736. more,

  737. having been

  738. reconciled,

  739. shall we

  740. be saved

  741. through his

  742. life?

  743. You see,

  744. the fact,

  745. and I think

  746. there it's

  747. talking about

  748. his resurrection

  749. life.

  750. How shall we

  751. be saved

  752. through his

  753. resurrection

  754. life?

  755. The fact

  756. that Christ

  757. rose from

  758. the grave

  759. is the

  760. proof that

  761. we need

  762. to know

  763. that we

  764. will receive

  765. our full

  766. salvation.

  767. Because

  768. Christ

  769. rose,

  770. we will

  771. rise.

  772. And because

  773. he rose

  774. again,

  775. we know

  776. that we

  777. will experience

  778. peace and

  779. grace and

  780. joy in

  781. all its

  782. fullness in

  783. eternity to

  784. come.

  785. I need to

  786. remind myself

  787. of that

  788. truth.

  789. We have it

  790. because we

  791. are saved

  792. through his

  793. resurrection

  794. life.

  795. So these

  796. are the

  797. twin truths

  798. that we

  799. are to

  800. carry with

  801. us every

  802. single day.

  803. We need

  804. to remind

  805. ourselves of

  806. these truths,

  807. the cross

  808. and the

  809. resurrection.

  810. Remember

  811. that waterfall

  812. that we

  813. talked about?

  814. As the

  815. water comes

  816. cascading down

  817. and it

  818. fills up

  819. that pool

  820. and from

  821. that pool

  822. it overflows

  823. to other

  824. ones?

  825. Well,

  826. if that

  827. waterfall

  828. stopped,

  829. those pools

  830. would not be

  831. there.

  832. In other

  833. words,

  834. it needs to

  835. be continually

  836. filled up

  837. and overflowing.

  838. And we

  839. need to

  840. fill up in

  841. our life.

  842. We need to

  843. fill our

  844. lives up

  845. with the

  846. gospel,

  847. to go

  848. back to

  849. the truth

  850. of the

  851. cross and

  852. the

  853. resurrection.

  854. And as

  855. it does,

  856. it overflows

  857. into our

  858. life with

  859. peace and

  860. grace and

  861. hope,

  862. giving us

  863. a future,

  864. giving us

  865. strength to

  866. live for

  867. today.

  868. So my

  869. invitation and

  870. encouragement

  871. for us all

  872. is that we

  873. would swim

  874. in the

  875. gospel every

  876. day.

  877. Don't just

  878. dip your

  879. toe in,

  880. and just

  881. kind of

  882. put a

  883. finger in

  884. and see

  885. what it's

  886. like.

  887. No,

  888. jump in,

  889. immerse

  890. yourself,

  891. apply it,

  892. and enjoy

  893. the gospel.

  894. We have

  895. been justified.

  896. We are

  897. reconciled.

  898. We have a

  899. great relationship

  900. with our

  901. God.

  902. Let's

  903. pray.

  904. Amen.

  905. God,

  906. we are

  907. going to

  908. pray.

  909. Amen.

  910. Amen.

  911. Amen.

  912. Our

  913. Father God,

  914. we thank

  915. you so

  916. much for

  917. the truth

  918. of the

  919. gospel.

  920. Thank you

  921. that you

  922. have saved

  923. us,

  924. you have

  925. rescued us,

  926. and you

  927. have given

  928. us peace

  929. with you

  930. today,

  931. grace to

  932. cover all

  933. of our

  934. sin,

  935. the hope

  936. of glory

  937. to come.

  938. Would you

  939. please help

  940. us as we

  941. go through

  942. our struggles

  943. and trials

  944. to be able

  945. to look at

  946. them with

  947. your perspective,

  948. to know that

  949. you are working

  950. good in them

  951. and through

  952. them,

  953. strengthening

  954. us,

  955. building us

  956. up,

  957. transforming

  958. our character,

  959. and giving

  960. us the hope

  961. of what we

  962. have to come.

  963. Father,

  964. help us

  965. that we

  966. would remember

  967. the truth

  968. of the

  969. gospel

  970. every day,

  971. that Jesus

  972. died for

  973. me,

  974. that Jesus

  975. was raised

  976. for me,

  977. so that I

  978. can be safe

  979. and secure

  980. with him

  981. now and

  982. forever.

  983. We give

  984. you our

  985. praise,

  986. we say

  987. thank you,

  988. in Jesus'

  989. name,

  990. Amen.

  991. Well,

  992. we're going

  993. to sing

  994. together,

  995. one that

  996. helps us

  997. to rejoice

  998. further

  999. in the

  1000. gospel,

  1001. to God

  1002. be the

  1003. glory,

  1004. great things

  1005. he has

  1006. done,

  1007. so loved

  1008. he the

  1009. world

  1010. that he

  1011. gave us

  1012. his

  1013. son.

  1014. So let's

  1015. stand

  1016. together

  1017. as we

  1018. sing.

  1019. Thank you.
