  1. It's a joy to be with you this morning. It's lovely to be able to open God's Word together and to consider all that he has to say to us.

  2. And both this Sunday and next we're going to be looking at two of the names of God that we find in the Old Testament,

  3. both of which appear in the record of the life of Abraham.

  4. And today we're going to be looking at a story in the first book of the Bible, Genesis, and in chapter 16.

  5. And to one couple, it appears as though God isn't doing anything at all.

  6. Yet someone else will discover that he is the God who sees everything.

  7. In fact, she will declare, you are the God who sees me.

  8. In Hebrew it's pronounced El Roy, simply the God who sees.

  9. And like many stories in the Bible, it doesn't try to cover up the sins of the main characters,

  10. but instead it reveals more to us about the God whom we worship.

  11. So let's read together from Genesis chapter 16.

    Genesis 16 chapter mention

  12. Now, Sarai, Abram's wife, had borne him no children.

  13. But she had an Egyptian slave named Hagar.

  14. So she said to Abram, the Lord has kept me from having children.

  15. Go sleep with my slave.

  16. Perhaps I can build a family through her.

  17. Abram agreed to what Sarai said.

  18. So after Abram had been living in Canaan ten years,

  19. Sarai, his wife, took her Egyptian slave Hagar

  20. and gave her to her husband to be his wife.

  21. He slept with Hagar and she conceived.

  22. When she knew she was pregnant, she began to despise her mistress.

  23. Then Sarai said to Abram,

  24. You are responsible for the wrong I am suffering.

  25. I put my slave in your arms

  26. and now that she knows she is pregnant,

  27. she despises me.

  28. May the Lord judge between you and me.

  29. Your slave is in your hands, Abram said.

  30. Do with her whatever you think best.

  31. Then Sarai mistreated Hagar,

  32. so she fled from her.

  33. The angel of the Lord found Hagar near a spring in the desert.

  34. It was the spring that is beside the road to Shur.

  35. And he said,

  36. Hagar, slave of Sarai,

  37. where have you come from

  38. and where are you going?

  39. I am running away from my mistress,

  40. Sarai, she answered.

  41. Then the angel of the Lord told her,

  42. Go back to your mistress

  43. and submit to her.

  44. The angel added,

  45. I will increase your descendants so much

  46. that they will be too numerous to count.

  47. The angel of the Lord also said to her,

  48. You are now pregnant

  49. and you will give birth to a son.

  50. You shall name him Ishmael

  51. for the Lord has heard of your misery.

  52. He will be a wild donkey of a man.

  53. His hand will be against everyone

  54. and everyone's hand against him.

  55. And he will live in hostility

  56. toward all his brothers.

  57. She gave this name to the Lord

  58. who spoke to her.

  59. You are the God

  60. who sees me.

  61. For she said,

  62. I have now seen

  63. the one who sees me.

  64. That is why the well was called

  65. Beer the Hoy Roy.

  66. It is still there

  67. between Kadesh and Beret.

  68. So Hagar bore Abram a son

  69. and Abram gave him the name Ishmael

  70. to the son she had born.

  71. Abram was 86 years old

  72. when Hagar bore him Ishmael.

  73. So Father, we pray now

  74. that you would continue to speak

  75. these words by your spirit

  76. to our hearts

  77. so we might get a better view

  78. of who you are

  79. and that we might see clearly

  80. who we are.

  81. And Father,

  82. where those things that we see

  83. would cause us to want to turn away

  84. and not to look,

  85. we pray,

  86. that you would help us

  87. to understand

  88. that you reveal our hearts

  89. so that we might turn to you

  90. and run to Jesus our Saviour.

  91. And so Lord,

  92. do what you will in our hearts

  93. this day,

  94. I pray.

  95. In Jesus' name.

  96. Amen.

  97. Amen.

  98. It was about 30 years ago,

  99. but I still remember it so well.

  100. I woke up on Christmas morning

  101. with a throbbing pain in my mouth.

  102. I spent the day in bed

  103. feeling really miserable for myself

  104. while the rest of the family

  105. tucked into their Christmas dinner.

  106. there was obviously no doctor

  107. or dentist open on that day.

  108. I couldn't face the thought

  109. of Christmas Day

  110. an accident and emergency.

  111. Thankfully,

  112. we knew someone

  113. who was able to give me

  114. some penicillin

  115. to get started,

  116. but it turned out

  117. it was an abscess

  118. and I was going to have to

  119. start a series of treatment

  120. at the School of Dentistry

  121. in Belfast

  122. for a number of months.

  123. I arrived for one

  124. of those appointments,

  125. went to the reception desk,

  126. gave them my appointment card

  127. and took my seat.

  128. I had carefully counted

  129. the number of people before me

  130. just as you do

  131. to work out your place

  132. in the queue

  133. and I waited patiently

  134. for my turn.

  135. But when it came

  136. to what I thought

  137. was my turn,

  138. someone else was called

  139. instead of me.

  140. My mistake,

  141. I thought,

  142. I'll just wait patiently.

  143. But then someone else

  144. was called

  145. and then someone else

  146. and then someone else.

  147. It kept going on

  148. until even I realised

  149. that this was far too long

  150. to wait.

  151. I went up to the reception desk

  152. and asked,

  153. ever so politely,

  154. if I had been overlooked.

  155. Well, I'd been more than overlooked.

  156. My appointment card

  157. had been thrown in the bin

  158. and I've been sitting there

  159. all day

  160. with nobody to see me.

  161. You know,

  162. sometimes

  163. we can feel that way

  164. about God.

  165. We have brought

  166. something

  167. to him.

  168. we have left it

  169. with him.

  170. We have waited

  171. patiently

  172. for him.

  173. And we've waited

  174. what we think

  175. is more

  176. than a reasonable

  177. period of time

  178. to wait on God's answer

  179. and it appears

  180. that God

  181. is doing

  182. nothing.

  183. and we decide

  184. that we cannot

  185. wait

  186. any longer.

  187. That's how

  188. Sarai is feeling

  189. in Genesis 16.

  190. God has promised

  191. to make

  192. Abram

  193. into a great

  194. nation

  195. with descendants

  196. that will outnumber

  197. the stars of the sky.

  198. But at this point

  199. in time

  200. it wouldn't take

  201. the whole weekend

  202. to do a stock take.

  203. The total

  204. is none.

  205. Not

  206. one

  207. child.

  208. Not even

  209. an expected

  210. child.

  211. And as time

  212. was passing

  213. by

  214. Sarai was

  215. giving up

  216. on any chance

  217. of giving birth.

  218. She concludes

  219. that this God

  220. who made

  221. these promises

  222. is doing

  223. nothing

  224. and she

  225. cannot wait

  226. any longer.

  227. So she

  228. hatches

  229. a plan.

  230. But it's

  231. a plan

  232. that lacks

  233. faith.

  234. The story

  235. is written

  236. so well

  237. that we are

  238. almost thinking

  239. Sarai's thoughts

  240. before her.

  241. Verse 1

  242. Now Sarai

  243. Abram's wife

  244. had borne him

  245. no children

  246. but

  247. she had

  248. an Egyptian

  249. maidservant

  250. named

  251. Hagar.

  252. Now even

  253. if you've

  254. never heard

  255. this story

  256. before

  257. you already

  258. know what

  259. Sarai is

  260. thinking.

  261. Even if

  262. you're

  263. thinking

  264. no

  265. she

  266. can't

  267. do

  268. that.

  269. But

  270. verse 2

  271. she said

  272. to Abram

  273. the Lord

  274. has kept

  275. me from

  276. having

  277. children

  278. go

  279. sleep

  280. with

  281. my

  282. maidservant

  283. perhaps

  284. I can

  285. build a

  286. family

  287. through

  288. her.

  289. you

  290. see

  291. it's

  292. a plan

  293. that

  294. lacks

  295. faith

  296. because

  297. it is

  298. a plan

  299. that

  300. resists

  301. God.

  302. It

  303. appears

  304. here

  305. in the

  306. form

  307. of

  308. blame.

  309. Look

  310. at what

  311. Sarai

  312. says

  313. in

  314. verse

  315. 2

  316. the

  317. Lord

  318. has

  319. kept

  320. me

  321. from

  322. having

  323. children.

  324. She

  325. recognises

  326. that God

  327. is the

  328. author

  329. of her

  330. barrenness.

  331. She

  332. knows

  333. that he

  334. is the

  335. source

  336. of all

  337. life

  338. and she

  339. knows

  340. that it

  341. is he

  342. who has

  343. withheld

  344. life.

  345. But

  346. Sarai

  347. will

  348. resist

  349. God's

  350. will.

  351. She's

  352. determined

  353. to have

  354. a child

  355. and if

  356. God

  357. will not

  358. give her

  359. one

  360. she

  361. will do

  362. it

  363. herself.

  364. She

  365. puts it

  366. as plainly

  367. as that.

  368. Go

  369. sleep

  370. with my

  371. maidservant

  372. perhaps

  373. I

  374. can

  375. build

  376. a

  377. family

  378. through

  379. her.

  380. Do you

  381. hear those

  382. words?

  383. Perhaps

  384. I

  385. can

  386. build

  387. a

  388. family

  389. through

  390. her.

  391. This

  392. will be

  393. Sarai's

  394. doing.

  395. She's

  396. not going

  397. to sit

  398. around

  399. any

  400. longer.

  401. Since

  402. God

  403. appears

  404. to be

  405. doing

  406. nothing

  407. well

  408. Sarai

  409. is going

  410. to do

  411. something.

  412. It's

  413. a plan

  414. that lacks

  415. faith

  416. because

  417. first of

  418. all it

  419. resists

  420. God

  421. but it's

  422. a plan

  423. that lacks

  424. faith

  425. because

  426. it is

  427. completely

  428. Sarai's

  429. own

  430. doing.

  431. Now you

  432. and I

  433. have no

  434. shortage

  435. of plans

  436. that lack

  437. faith.

  438. We can

  439. gamble in

  440. the hope

  441. of paying

  442. off debts.

  443. We can

  444. use alcohol

  445. to numb

  446. our pain.

  447. We can

  448. alter tax

  449. returns so

  450. that we

  451. pay less

  452. than we

  453. should.

  454. We can

  455. enter into

  456. relationships

  457. and non-Christians

  458. because there

  459. seems to be

  460. no prospect

  461. of a

  462. Christian

  463. boyfriend

  464. or

  465. girlfriend.

  466. We can

  467. dress up

  468. our CV

  469. because we

  470. think that

  471. if we're

  472. truthful

  473. we're not

  474. likely to

  475. get that

  476. job.

  477. We have

  478. no shortage

  479. of plans

  480. that lack

  481. faith.

  482. It isn't

  483. easy to

  484. trust God

  485. when he

  486. appears

  487. to do

  488. nothing.

  489. It can

  490. feel as

  491. though we

  492. cannot wait

  493. any longer

  494. and we

  495. hatch plans

  496. that lack

  497. faith.

  498. In fact

  499. we do

  500. things that

  501. we know

  502. resist God

  503. and his

  504. purposes.

  505. We do

  506. things that

  507. we know

  508. are wrong

  509. but we

  510. do them

  511. anyway

  512. because it

  513. seems that

  514. it's the

  515. answer to

  516. the immediate

  517. problem that

  518. we face.

  519. But these

  520. plans are

  521. not of

  522. faith.

  523. In fact

  524. they are

  525. faithless.

  526. It is

  527. Sarai who

  528. hatches the

  529. plan but

  530. we assume

  531. that Abram

  532. will not

  533. go along

  534. with it.

  535. After all

  536. this is

  537. Abram the

  538. man of

  539. faith.

  540. This is

  541. Abram the

  542. friend of

  543. God.

  544. said.

  545. But we

  546. read in

  547. verse 3

  548. Abram

  549. agreed with

  550. what Sarai

  551. had said.

  552. It's sadly

  553. reminiscent

  554. isn't it of

  555. another story

  556. the story of

  557. the fall

  558. itself.

  559. You remember

  560. that Eve

  561. took the

  562. fruit which

  563. had been

  564. forbidden to

  565. her and

  566. she gave

  567. it to

  568. Adam.

  569. And what

  570. does Adam

  571. do?

  572. he takes

  573. and eats.

  574. He's

  575. without

  576. excuse.

  577. The Lord

  578. later rebukes

  579. him saying

  580. because you

  581. listened to

  582. your wife

  583. and ate

  584. from the

  585. tree.

  586. You see

  587. behind the

  588. voice of

  589. Eve was

  590. the voice

  591. of the

  592. evil one.

  593. And behind

  594. the voice

  595. of Sarai

  596. was the

  597. voice of

  598. the evil

  599. one.

  600. And both

  601. Adam and

  602. Abram should

  603. have recognized

  604. the real

  605. voice behind

  606. their wives

  607. words.

  608. You'll

  609. remember a

  610. time when

  611. Jesus recognized

  612. the voice of

  613. the evil

  614. one in

  615. the words

  616. of a

  617. close friend.

  618. Jesus had

  619. just revealed

  620. to his

  621. disciples that

  622. death lay

  623. ahead of

  624. him.

  625. But you

  626. remember that

  627. Peter resists

  628. what Jesus

  629. says.

  630. Never

  631. Lord this

  632. shall never

  633. happen to

  634. you.

  635. And you

  636. know Jesus'

  637. response?

  638. Get

  639. behind me

  640. Satan.

  641. You are a

  642. stumbling block

  643. to me.

  644. You do

  645. not have in

  646. mind the

  647. things of

  648. God but

  649. the things

  650. of men.

  651. You see

  652. we need to

  653. learn to

  654. recognize the

  655. voice of

  656. the evil

  657. one when

  658. it comes to

  659. us through

  660. the words

  661. of others.

  662. God

  663. maybe I

  664. should

  665. clarify just

  666. in case I

  667. misunderstood

  668. that it's

  669. not only

  670. through wives

  671. that the

  672. voice of the

  673. evil one

  674. can be

  675. heard.

  676. It can

  677. come through

  678. husbands and

  679. children,

  680. parents and

  681. siblings,

  682. work colleagues

  683. and friends

  684. and we need

  685. to recognize

  686. it for what

  687. it is to

  688. learn to

  689. resist it as

  690. Jesus did

  691. no matter

  692. what the

  693. consequences may

  694. be.

  695. This plan,

  696. this plan

  697. that lacked

  698. faith,

  699. was also

  700. a plan

  701. that lacked

  702. foresight.

  703. It's one of

  704. those plans

  705. that when

  706. later revealed

  707. you want to

  708. ask,

  709. what were

  710. you thinking?

  711. What were

  712. you thinking?

  713. We often

  714. ask our

  715. children that

  716. question,

  717. don't we,

  718. after they've

  719. done something

  720. foolish.

  721. what were

  722. you thinking?

  723. And the

  724. best defense

  725. I've ever

  726. heard from

  727. any of my

  728. children is

  729. simply this,

  730. I wasn't

  731. thinking.

  732. But it's

  733. not only

  734. children whose

  735. plans lack

  736. foresight.

  737. We all

  738. get sucked

  739. into situations

  740. that resolve

  741. an immediate

  742. problem,

  743. only to

  744. create an

  745. even bigger

  746. one.

  747. That's

  748. exactly what

  749. Abram does.

  750. He listens

  751. to Sarai,

  752. he takes

  753. Hagar as

  754. another

  755. wife,

  756. she becomes

  757. pregnant,

  758. and the

  759. result is

  760. conflict

  761. between

  762. Hagar and

  763. Sarai.

  764. Well,

  765. who could

  766. have foreseen

  767. that?

  768. Well,

  769. anybody,

  770. anybody who

  771. has thought

  772. about it.

  773. Of course it

  774. would lead to

  775. tension in the

  776. family.

  777. Of course

  778. Sarai would

  779. feel better

  780. that Hagar is

  781. able to give

  782. to Abraham

  783. what she could

  784. not.

  785. Of course

  786. Hagar would

  787. look down

  788. on Sarai.

  789. Anyone could

  790. have foreseen

  791. it, except

  792. those who

  793. weren't

  794. thinking.

  795. That's what

  796. happens when

  797. we resist

  798. God and

  799. when we

  800. hatch plans

  801. that lack

  802. faith.

  803. We think

  804. that God

  805. is not

  806. doing

  807. anything,

  808. and we

  809. act as

  810. though God

  811. does not

  812. see anything,

  813. but we

  814. discover from

  815. the rest

  816. of the

  817. story,

  818. that he

  819. is the

  820. God who

  821. sees

  822. everything.

  823. You see,

  824. Abraham thought

  825. that by doing

  826. what Sarai

  827. wanted,

  828. he would

  829. at least

  830. enjoy some

  831. peace in

  832. the home.

  833. But there

  834. is more

  835. unrest than

  836. ever.

  837. She now

  838. starts blaming

  839. Abraham for

  840. the whole

  841. thing.

  842. It's all

  843. his fault.

  844. And Abraham

  845. pursues his

  846. desire of a

  847. quiet life by

  848. simply telling

  849. Sarai to do

  850. with Hagar as

  851. she sees

  852. fit.

  853. She begins

  854. to treat

  855. Hagar so

  856. badly that

  857. she cannot

  858. take it any

  859. longer, and

  860. she runs

  861. away.

  862. But this

  863. is a God

  864. who sees

  865. everything.

  866. He sees

  867. our suffering,

  868. and he

  869. sees Hagar's

  870. suffering.

  871. And not in

  872. a distant,

  873. far away

  874. sense,

  875. he sees

  876. our suffering

  877. in a very

  878. near sense.

  879. Look at

  880. verse 7.

  881. The angel

  882. of the

  883. Lord found

  884. Hagar.

  885. It suggests

  886. that he was

  887. looking for

  888. her.

  889. Not that God

  890. didn't know

  891. where she

  892. was, but

  893. that he

  894. sought her

  895. in her

  896. suffering.

  897. He had

  898. seen how

  899. Sarai had

  900. treated her.

  901. He had

  902. seen how

  903. cruelly

  904. she had

  905. been

  906. treated,

  907. and he

  908. had seen

  909. her flee

  910. for safety.

  911. None of

  912. it had

  913. escaped

  914. God's

  915. notice.

  916. Absolutely

  917. none of

  918. it, because

  919. he sees

  920. everything.

  921. We're inclined

  922. to think,

  923. aren't we,

  924. at times,

  925. that God

  926. doesn't

  927. really

  928. appreciate

  929. our

  930. suffering.

  931. We feel

  932. that he

  933. has turned

  934. his back

  935. on us.

  936. In fact,

  937. it's as

  938. though

  939. he's able

  940. to block

  941. us out of

  942. his thinking

  943. completely.

  944. because if

  945. he really

  946. saw what

  947. we were

  948. going

  949. through,

  950. he would

  951. surely do

  952. something

  953. about it.

  954. But all

  955. this time,

  956. he appears

  957. to do

  958. nothing.

  959. Yet he's

  960. the God

  961. who sees

  962. everything.

  963. You

  964. remember when

  965. God sent

  966. Moses back

  967. to the

  968. Hebrew

  969. slaves in

  970. Egypt.

  971. He told

  972. him to

  973. bring God's

  974. words to

  975. the elders

  976. of Israel,

  977. I have

  978. watched

  979. over you

  980. and have

  981. seen

  982. what has

  983. been done

  984. to you.

  985. None of

  986. it had

  987. escaped God's

  988. notice.

  989. It appeared

  990. as though

  991. God was

  992. doing

  993. nothing,

  994. but he

  995. had seen

  996. it all.

  997. For

  998. 400 years

  999. it felt

  1000. like God

  1001. was

  1002. unconcerned

  1003. or unaware

  1004. of the

  1005. hardship

  1006. that they

  1007. faced.

  1008. But not

  1009. one bit

  1010. of their

  1011. suffering

  1012. had gone

  1013. unnoticed

  1014. by God.

  1015. Not

  1016. one

  1017. bit.

  1018. And the

  1019. same is

  1020. true

  1021. of you.

  1022. Whatever

  1023. you're facing

  1024. at this

  1025. time,

  1026. whatever

  1027. hardship

  1028. you're having

  1029. to endure,

  1030. not one

  1031. bit of

  1032. your

  1033. suffering

  1034. goes

  1035. unnoticed

  1036. by the

  1037. Lord.

  1038. But God

  1039. sees more

  1040. than our

  1041. suffering.

  1042. God

  1043. sees the

  1044. attitudes

  1045. of our

  1046. hearts.

  1047. Hagar

  1048. has suffered

  1049. terribly

  1050. at Sarah's

  1051. hand,

  1052. heart.

  1053. But it

  1054. didn't

  1055. excuse the

  1056. attitude of

  1057. Hagar's

  1058. heart.

  1059. You

  1060. remember that

  1061. once she

  1062. became pregnant

  1063. she began

  1064. to despise

  1065. her mistress.

  1066. Now look

  1067. at what God

  1068. says to her

  1069. in verse

  1070. 9.

  1071. Go back

  1072. to your

  1073. mistress

  1074. and

  1075. submit

  1076. to her.

  1077. God

  1078. had seen

  1079. her suffering,

  1080. suffering,

  1081. but God

  1082. did not

  1083. remove her

  1084. suffering.

  1085. In fact,

  1086. God

  1087. sends her

  1088. back to

  1089. the place

  1090. of her

  1091. suffering.

  1092. Why?

  1093. Because

  1094. God is

  1095. dealing with

  1096. the attitude

  1097. of Hagar's

  1098. heart.

  1099. See,

  1100. sometimes,

  1101. not always,

  1102. but sometimes,

  1103. God does

  1104. not remove

  1105. your suffering

  1106. because he

  1107. is more

  1108. concerned

  1109. with the

  1110. attitude

  1111. of your

  1112. heart.

  1113. Remember the

  1114. apostle Paul

  1115. three times

  1116. prayed for

  1117. something that

  1118. he simply

  1119. called the

  1120. thorn in

  1121. his flesh

  1122. to be

  1123. removed from

  1124. him.

  1125. But God

  1126. said,

  1127. no.

  1128. Instead,

  1129. God promised

  1130. that his

  1131. grace would

  1132. be sufficient

  1133. for Paul.

  1134. And Paul

  1135. recognized that

  1136. God had left

  1137. him with this

  1138. thorn in his

  1139. flesh to

  1140. protect him

  1141. from pride.

  1142. Now,

  1143. that must

  1144. have been a

  1145. tendency that

  1146. Paul had

  1147. come to

  1148. recognize in

  1149. himself.

  1150. Paul knew

  1151. how easily

  1152. he could turn

  1153. his spiritual

  1154. experiences into

  1155. a reason to

  1156. boast and

  1157. become proud.

  1158. God

  1159. and he

  1160. recognized his

  1161. suffering as

  1162. God's

  1163. gracious

  1164. gift to

  1165. protect him

  1166. from this

  1167. tendency to

  1168. sin that

  1169. could have

  1170. destroyed his

  1171. life and

  1172. his ministry.

  1173. God

  1174. does indeed

  1175. see our

  1176. suffering,

  1177. but he

  1178. sees more

  1179. than our

  1180. suffering.

  1181. He also

  1182. sees the

  1183. attitudes of

  1184. our hearts.

  1185. And

  1186. sometimes he

  1187. delays

  1188. relieving us

  1189. of our

  1190. suffering so

  1191. that he

  1192. might address

  1193. the deeper

  1194. issues of

  1195. our hearts.

  1196. And in

  1197. such circumstances

  1198. that is not

  1199. God's punishment

  1200. of you, but

  1201. God's gracious

  1202. gift to

  1203. you.

  1204. This God

  1205. who sees our

  1206. suffering and

  1207. our attitudes

  1208. also sees

  1209. our fears.

  1210. Hagar's

  1211. position is a

  1212. desperate one.

  1213. She is a

  1214. slave who has

  1215. run away from

  1216. her mistress.

  1217. She is a

  1218. woman alone

  1219. with no

  1220. rights, no

  1221. wealth, no

  1222. security, no

  1223. future.

  1224. In this

  1225. culture, your

  1226. children were

  1227. your pension

  1228. plan.

  1229. They were

  1230. your only

  1231. hope for

  1232. old age.

  1233. And God

  1234. assured Hagar

  1235. that she

  1236. will have

  1237. a son.

  1238. He will

  1239. make her

  1240. descendants too

  1241. numerous to

  1242. count.

  1243. God had

  1244. seen her

  1245. and God

  1246. would provide

  1247. for her.

  1248. God

  1249. knows

  1250. God

  1251. knows

  1252. your

  1253. fears

  1254. about the

  1255. future.

  1256. God

  1257. knows

  1258. about

  1259. those

  1260. things

  1261. that

  1262. intrude

  1263. into your

  1264. sleeping

  1265. hours

  1266. and rob

  1267. you of

  1268. rest.

  1269. God

  1270. sees

  1271. all of

  1272. that

  1273. and he

  1274. can be

  1275. trusted

  1276. with all

  1277. of that.

  1278. His

  1279. answers are

  1280. not always

  1281. what we'd

  1282. imagined.

  1283. love

  1284. and he

  1285. would

  1286. be a

  1287. wild

  1288. donkey

  1289. of a

  1290. man

  1291. doesn't

  1292. sound like

  1293. anyone's

  1294. dream of

  1295. motherhood

  1296. does it?

  1297. But he

  1298. would provide

  1299. security for

  1300. her nonetheless.

  1301. God

  1302. has seen

  1303. her vulnerable

  1304. position,

  1305. he knew

  1306. her fears

  1307. and he

  1308. reassures

  1309. her that

  1310. he is

  1311. in

  1312. control

  1313. of it

  1314. all.

  1315. Her

  1316. response is

  1317. quite wonderful

  1318. in verse

  1319. 13 isn't

  1320. it?

  1321. She says

  1322. you are

  1323. the God

  1324. who sees

  1325. me.

  1326. I

  1327. have seen

  1328. the one

  1329. who sees

  1330. me.

  1331. How

  1332. wonderful

  1333. is that?

  1334. After

  1335. all,

  1336. who is

  1337. Hagar?

  1338. She's

  1339. certainly

  1340. not the

  1341. main

  1342. character

  1343. in the

  1344. story.

  1345. She's

  1346. not going

  1347. to be

  1348. the mother

  1349. of the

  1350. son

  1351. that God

  1352. had

  1353. promised

  1354. Abram.

  1355. If you

  1356. like,

  1357. she's

  1358. only a

  1359. supporting

  1360. actress,

  1361. not part

  1362. of the

  1363. main

  1364. cast.

  1365. But

  1366. God

  1367. had

  1368. seen

  1369. her.

  1370. Do you

  1371. feel that

  1372. way at

  1373. times?

  1374. Who

  1375. am I?

  1376. Why

  1377. would

  1378. God

  1379. be

  1380. concerned

  1381. about

  1382. me?

  1383. I'm

  1384. not

  1385. someone

  1386. important.

  1387. I'm

  1388. not going

  1389. to do

  1390. anything

  1391. important.

  1392. I'm

  1393. nothing

  1394. special.

  1395. Well,

  1396. this God

  1397. who sees

  1398. everything

  1399. sees

  1400. you.

  1401. He

  1402. sees

  1403. your

  1404. suffering.

  1405. He

  1406. sees

  1407. your

  1408. attitudes.

  1409. He

  1410. sees

  1411. your

  1412. fears.

  1413. He

  1414. sees

  1415. you.

  1416. Is it

  1417. any wonder

  1418. that Hagar

  1419. responds as

  1420. she does?

  1421. God

  1422. sees her.

  1423. But not

  1424. only does

  1425. this God

  1426. see her,

  1427. she has

  1428. seen the

  1429. God who

  1430. sees her.

  1431. God has

  1432. made himself

  1433. known to

  1434. her.

  1435. And we

  1436. too can

  1437. know this

  1438. God who

  1439. knows us.

  1440. How

  1441. incredible is

  1442. that?

  1443. God

  1444. this

  1445. same

  1446. God who

  1447. sent his

  1448. angel to

  1449. find

  1450. Hagar

  1451. would send

  1452. his own

  1453. son into

  1454. the world

  1455. so that

  1456. he could

  1457. make himself

  1458. known,

  1459. so that

  1460. we could

  1461. see the

  1462. God who

  1463. sees

  1464. us.

  1465. In fact,

  1466. we have a

  1467. far clearer

  1468. view of

  1469. God than

  1470. Hagar

  1471. ever did.

  1472. just as

  1473. God

  1474. sought

  1475. for

  1476. Hagar,

  1477. Jesus

  1478. came into

  1479. this world

  1480. to seek

  1481. and to

  1482. save

  1483. the lost.

  1484. God

  1485. did not

  1486. stay

  1487. distant

  1488. from our

  1489. suffering,

  1490. but in

  1491. his son

  1492. entered

  1493. into our

  1494. world

  1495. of suffering.

  1496. God

  1497. not only

  1498. saw the

  1499. danger

  1500. that we

  1501. were in,

  1502. under

  1503. his

  1504. judgment

  1505. for our

  1506. sins,

  1507. he sent

  1508. his son

  1509. to rescue

  1510. us from

  1511. the death

  1512. that we

  1513. deserve

  1514. by his

  1515. death on

  1516. the cross.

  1517. Now,

  1518. if God

  1519. has done

  1520. all of

  1521. that for

  1522. us,

  1523. do you

  1524. think that

  1525. he doesn't

  1526. see what

  1527. you are

  1528. going through

  1529. right now?

  1530. That he

  1531. doesn't

  1532. care?

  1533. It may

  1534. appear as

  1535. though God

  1536. is doing

  1537. nothing,

  1538. but

  1539. Hagar

  1540. has

  1541. learned

  1542. what

  1543. Abram

  1544. and

  1545. Sarai

  1546. had

  1547. forgotten.

  1548. The

  1549. one we

  1550. worship

  1551. is the

  1552. God

  1553. who

  1554. sees

  1555. me.

  1556. Let's

  1557. pray

  1558. together.

  1559. Father,

  1560. even as

  1561. we

  1562. reflect on

  1563. these

  1564. words,

  1565. we

  1566. have to

  1567. respond as

  1568. David did

  1569. that such

  1570. thoughts are

  1571. too wonderful

  1572. for me.

  1573. To think

  1574. that you

  1575. see and

  1576. know

  1577. me.

  1578. to think

  1579. that the

  1580. God who

  1581. created the

  1582. whole of

  1583. the universe

  1584. and sustains

  1585. it by his

  1586. powerful words

  1587. at the

  1588. same time

  1589. is concerned

  1590. about me.

  1591. Oh, how

  1592. humbling

  1593. a thought

  1594. and how

  1595. overwhelming

  1596. to think of

  1597. the love

  1598. the heavenly

  1599. father has

  1600. for his

  1601. children.

  1602. Father, we

  1603. know that

  1604. at different

  1605. times your

  1606. people are

  1607. called to

  1608. endure all

  1609. kinds of

  1610. hardship and

  1611. suffering.

  1612. Father, may

  1613. we never be

  1614. those who

  1615. start to

  1616. think that

  1617. somehow you

  1618. do not

  1619. see or

  1620. you do

  1621. not care.

  1622. But rather

  1623. as we look

  1624. to the

  1625. fact that

  1626. you gave

  1627. your own

  1628. son for

  1629. us,

  1630. may that

  1631. assure us

  1632. of your

  1633. unchanging

  1634. love towards

  1635. your children

  1636. and that

  1637. even in

  1638. our suffering

  1639. your purposes

  1640. are for

  1641. our good.

  1642. Father, we

  1643. thank you that

  1644. you are not

  1645. only the

  1646. God who

  1647. sees me

  1648. but that

  1649. we can

  1650. see the

  1651. God who

  1652. sees us.

  1653. Thank you

  1654. that in the

  1655. Lord Jesus

  1656. you made

  1657. yourself fully

  1658. known that

  1659. when we

  1660. look to

  1661. him we

  1662. see the

  1663. invisible

  1664. God.

  1665. And

  1666. Father, we

  1667. pray then that

  1668. you might

  1669. draw out our

  1670. hearts both

  1671. in love for

  1672. you and

  1673. in confidence

  1674. in you.

  1675. And we

  1676. ask this in

  1677. the name of

  1678. the Lord

  1679. Jesus.

  1680. Amen.

  1681. in response

  1682. to what we

  1683. have heard

  1684. together

  1685. we're going

  1686. to sing

  1687. when I

  1688. fear my

  1689. faith will

  1690. fail

  1691. Christ

  1692. will hold

  1693. me fast.

  1694. It's an

  1695. invitation to

  1696. come and

  1697. see the

  1698. God who

  1699. is faithful

  1700. towards us

  1701. who sees

  1702. us and

  1703. knows our

  1704. need

  1705. and is

  1706. faithful.

  1707. Let's

  1708. stand together

  1709. as we

  1710. sing in

  1711. response.
