  1. Genesis chapter 17

    Genesis 17 chapter mention

  2. Last week we were looking at the previous chapter and that messy story of Abram, Sarai and Hagar.

  3. And in the midst of all of that mess, God was revealed as the God who sees.

  4. The God who sees everything.

  5. Nothing escapes his notice.

  6. And not in some distant and detached kind of way,

  7. but in a very near and intimate sense.

  8. He sees our suffering.

  9. He sees our hearts.

  10. And he sees our fears.

  11. And today we're going to hear God reveal himself as God Almighty.

  12. In Hebrew it's pronounced El Shaddai.

  13. You might have heard that name before.

  14. And not surprisingly, God reveals himself by this name

  15. to those people who seem to be doubting God's power to do what he had promised.

  16. So let's read that story together in Genesis chapter 17.

    Genesis 17 chapter mention

  17. When Abram was 99 years old,

  18. the Lord appeared to him and said,

  19. I am God Almighty.

  20. Walk before me faithfully and be blameless.

  21. Then I will make my covenant between me and you

  22. and will greatly increase your numbers.

  23. Abram fell face down and God said to him,

  24. As for me, this is my covenant with you.

  25. You will be the father of many nations.

  26. No longer will you be called Abram.

  27. Your name will be Abraham.

  28. For I have made you a father of many nations.

  29. I will make you very fruitful.

  30. I will make nations of you and kings will come from you.

  31. I will establish my covenant as an everlasting covenant

  32. between me and you and your descendants after you

  33. for generations to come to be your God

  34. and the God of your descendants after you.

  35. The whole land of Canaan where you now reside as a foreigner,

  36. I will give as an everlasting possession to you

  37. and your descendants after you

  38. and I will be their God.

  39. Then God said to Abram,

  40. As for you, you must keep my covenant,

  41. you and your descendants after you

  42. for the generations to come.

  43. This is my covenant with you

  44. and your descendants after you,

  45. the covenant you are to keep.

  46. Every male among you shall be circumcised.

  47. You are to undergo circumcision

  48. and it will be the sign of the covenant

  49. between me and you.

  50. For the generations to come,

  51. every male among you who is eight days old

  52. must be circumcised,

  53. including those born in your household

  54. or bought with money from a foreigner,

  55. those who are not your offspring.

  56. Whether born in your household

  57. or bought with your money,

  58. they must be circumcised.

  59. My covenant in your flesh

  60. is to be an everlasting covenant.

  61. Any uncircumcised male

  62. who has not been circumcised in the flesh

  63. will be cut off from his people.

  64. He has broken my covenant.

  65. God also said to Abram,

  66. As for Sarah, your wife,

  67. you are no longer to call her Sarah.

  68. Her name will be Sarah.

  69. I will bless her

  70. and will surely give you a son by her.

  71. I will bless her

  72. so that she will be the mother of nations.

  73. Kings of peoples will come from her.

  74. Abram fell face down.

  75. He laughed and said to himself,

  76. Will a son be born to a man

  77. a hundred years old?

  78. Will Sarah bear a child

  79. at the age of 90?

  80. And Abram said to God,

  81. If only Ishmael

  82. might live under your blessing.

  83. Then God said,

  84. Yes,

  85. but your wife Sarah

  86. will bear you a son

  87. and you will call him Isaac.

  88. I will establish my covenant with him

  89. as an everlasting covenant

  90. for his descendants after him.

  91. And as for Ishmael,

  92. I have heard you.

  93. I will surely bless him.

  94. I will make him fruitful

  95. and will greatly increase his numbers.

  96. He will be the father of twelve rulers

  97. and I will make him into a great nation.

  98. But my covenant

  99. I will establish with Isaac

  100. whom Sarah will bear to you

  101. by this time next year.

  102. When he had finished speaking with Abraham,

  103. God went up from him.

  104. On that very day,

  105. Abraham took his son Ishmael

  106. and all those born in his household

  107. are bought with his money,

  108. every male in his household

  109. and circumcised them.

  110. As God told him,

  111. Abram was 99 years old

  112. when he was circumcised

  113. and his son Ishmael was 13.

  114. Abram and his son Ishmael

  115. were both circumcised on that very day

  116. and every male in Abraham's household,

  117. including those born in his household

  118. or bought from a foreigner,

  119. was circumcised with him.

  120. So Father, we pray now

  121. as we think on your word

  122. that you would grant us

  123. that spirit of wisdom and revelation

  124. so that we might know you better.

  125. And we ask this in the name of the Lord Jesus.

  126. Amen.

  127. Amen.

  128. There's something irresistible, isn't there,

  129. about laughing at someone else's expense.

  130. I'm sure you've all seen those videos

  131. on television

  132. of somebody falling off something

  133. or walking into something

  134. and not being able to stop yourself

  135. from laughing at them.

  136. Or if you're a little bit younger,

  137. maybe you've watched endless YouTube videos

  138. of people attempting to do something

  139. only for it to go disastrously wrong.

  140. Well, these chapters of Genesis

  141. read like a compilation of Abram's

  142. Abram's dumb ideas.

  143. It's like some version of a Dumb and Dumber movie

  144. tracking Abram and Sarah's travels

  145. throughout the ancient Middle East.

  146. Or some black and white Laurel and Hardy movie

  147. where Sarah turns to Abram

  148. only to scratch her head and say,

  149. well, that's another fine mess

  150. you've gotten me into.

  151. These stories would be laughable

  152. if they weren't so serious.

  153. God has promised Abram

  154. that he would make him into a great nation

  155. and that through Abraham

  156. blessing would come

  157. to all the nations of the earth.

  158. But with every one of Abram's dumb ideas,

  159. he seems to put God's promise in danger.

  160. You might remember there was that

  161. Sarah is my sister fiasco back in chapter 12.

  162. Abram and Sarah travel to Egypt

  163. because there's a famine in the land.

  164. But as they join the queue

  165. at the Egyptian passport patrol,

  166. Abram suddenly gets into a panic.

  167. He knows that Sarah is a beautiful woman.

  168. He knows that she's going to be noticed

  169. by all of the men that they meet.

  170. And he has a pretty low view of Egyptians.

  171. He thinks that they're going to kill him

  172. to take Sarah as their wife.

  173. So he comes up with a great idea, doesn't he?

  174. Let's pretend we're not married.

  175. Let's just say that you're my sister.

  176. Well, things may not work very well for Sarah,

  177. but at least Abram's life will be spared.

  178. Well, she's most certainly noticed by the Egyptians.

  179. In fact, the Pharaoh himself

  180. hears about this beautiful foreigner.

  181. He starts to treat Abraham well for Sarah's sake.

  182. And Abram suddenly begins to accumulate wealth,

  183. all under the pretense that Sarah is his sister.

  184. Until God intervenes.

  185. The Lord sends serious diseases on Pharaoh and his household,

  186. and Pharaoh seems to know that this is something

  187. to do with Abram and Sarah.

  188. The Sarah is my sister story

  189. was a dumb idea from the beginning.

  190. As time goes on,

  191. Abram seems to be giving up on God's promise.

  192. He assumes in chapter 15

  193. that it's his servant Eliezer

  194. who's going to be his heir.

  195. Maybe up until now,

  196. Abram had relied on the fact

  197. that there was always his nephew Lot.

  198. Maybe it was through him

  199. that this blessing would come.

  200. After all, they have no children themselves,

  201. and well, Lot is family.

  202. But at this stage,

  203. Abram and Lot have parted ways.

  204. Abram looks around him.

  205. He has no children.

  206. His nephew has left.

  207. It's looking as though his servant Eliezer

  208. is all that remains.

  209. In chapter 15,

  210. Abram speaks to God as the sovereign Lord.

  211. Yet he doesn't live

  212. as though this is the sovereign Lord.

  213. Like many of us,

  214. there's a big gap

  215. between what Abram knows

  216. and how Abram lives.

  217. We can address God, can't we,

  218. as our loving, heavenly Father.

  219. And yet doubt that God's actions

  220. are for our good.

  221. We can address God

  222. as the all-wise God,

  223. and yet ignore

  224. the teaching of his words.

  225. Addressing God as sovereign Lord

  226. doesn't mean that Abram lives

  227. as though God is the sovereign Lord.

  228. But the sovereign Lord

  229. gently assures Abram,

  230. this man will not be your heir,

  231. but a son

  232. who is of your own flesh and blood

  233. will be your heir.

  234. In spite of Abram's doubts,

  235. God points him back

  236. to his promise.

  237. Then last week,

  238. we heard the story

  239. about their servant's son,

  240. Ishmael.

  241. Time has gone on

  242. and God appears to be doing nothing,

  243. so Sarai takes things

  244. into her own hands

  245. and arranges Hagar

  246. to be her surrogate.

  247. Well, it's at this point

  248. that the story goes

  249. from dumb to dumber.

  250. Abram and Sarai

  251. have done all that they can do

  252. to see God's promise fulfilled.

  253. They've sought to protect

  254. Abram's life in Egypt.

  255. They've assumed

  256. that the promise

  257. would come through someone else

  258. like Lot or Eliezer.

  259. They've tried to produce

  260. a child of their own making.

  261. They have done everything

  262. that they could

  263. but rest in God's promise.

  264. You see,

  265. Abram's dumb ideas

  266. are all rooted

  267. in his view

  268. of God.

  269. Not so much

  270. what he sees

  271. of God

  272. but what he

  273. fails to see

  274. of God.

  275. And there is nothing

  276. as important

  277. in life

  278. as having a right

  279. view

  280. of God.

  281. In his book

  282. Knowing God,

  283. Jim Packer opens

  284. with these words,

  285. disregard the study

  286. of God

  287. and you

  288. sentence yourself

  289. to stumble

  290. and blunder

  291. through life

  292. blindfold

  293. as it were

  294. with no sense

  295. of direction

  296. and no understanding

  297. of what surrounds you.

  298. This way

  299. you can

  300. waste your life

  301. and lose

  302. your soul.

  303. Well,

  304. Abram certainly

  305. looks like someone

  306. stumbling

  307. and blundering

  308. through life

  309. blindfolds.

  310. And if Jim Packer

  311. is correct,

  312. when God appears

  313. to Abram here

  314. in Genesis 17,

  315. Abram's greatest

  316. need

  317. is to know

  318. God

  319. better.

  320. It's not

  321. family counselling

  322. though I think

  323. we can all agree

  324. that that wouldn't

  325. have done them

  326. any harm.

  327. It's not advice

  328. on how to conceive.

  329. Like any desperate

  330. couple,

  331. I'm sure they would

  332. have tried anything

  333. that anyone

  334. suggested to them.

  335. Abram's greatest

  336. need is to

  337. know

  338. God

  339. better.

  340. So when God

  341. appears to Abram,

  342. he begins by

  343. revealing

  344. something

  345. about himself.

  346. Abram's greatest

  347. need

  348. is to

  349. know

  350. the God

  351. who has

  352. made

  353. the promise.

  354. The first

  355. words God

  356. speaks to

  357. Abram

  358. are these,

  359. I

  360. am

  361. God

  362. almighty.

  363. I

  364. am

  365. God

  366. almighty.

  367. Thirteen

  368. years have

  369. passed since

  370. Ishmael was

  371. born.

  372. Abram is now

  373. ninety-nine

  374. years old.

  375. And here's

  376. what the

  377. New Testament

  378. has to say

  379. about Abram

  380. and Sarah

  381. in Hebrews

  382. eleven.

  383. By faith

  384. even Sarah

  385. who was

  386. past

  387. childbearing

  388. age

  389. was enabled

  390. to bear

  391. children

  392. because she

  393. considered him

  394. faithful

  395. who had

  396. made the

  397. promise.

  398. And so

  399. from this

  400. one man

  401. and he

  402. as good

  403. as dead

  404. came

  405. descendants

  406. as numerous

  407. as the

  408. stars in the

  409. sky

  410. and as

  411. countless

  412. as the

  413. sand on

  414. the

  415. seashore.

  416. Now it

  417. seems to

  418. me that

  419. the writer

  420. is far

  421. kinder to

  422. Sarah

  423. than he

  424. is to

  425. Abraham.

  426. Maybe he's

  427. just being

  428. polite.

  429. Sarah is

  430. past

  431. childbearing

  432. age.

  433. She is

  434. past

  435. grandparenting

  436. age.

  437. She is an

  438. old woman.

  439. The thought

  440. of her

  441. conceiving

  442. was well

  443. inconceivable.

  444. And Abram

  445. were told

  446. that he

  447. was as

  448. good as

  449. dead.

  450. No

  451. fertility

  452. clinic in

  453. the world

  454. would even

  455. look at

  456. them.

  457. There was

  458. absolutely

  459. nothing

  460. to work

  461. with.

  462. But isn't

  463. that the

  464. very point?

  465. This was

  466. never

  467. something that

  468. Abram and

  469. Sarah would

  470. do.

  471. It was

  472. always something

  473. that God

  474. was going

  475. to do.

  476. for them.

  477. It was

  478. something that

  479. God

  480. Almighty

  481. would do

  482. for them.

  483. This is

  484. what Abram

  485. and Sarah

  486. needed to

  487. know.

  488. That the

  489. God who

  490. made the

  491. promise

  492. is God

  493. Almighty.

  494. In actual

  495. fact all

  496. through the

  497. book of

  498. Genesis this

  499. name El

  500. Shaddai is

  501. tied up with

  502. this promise

  503. to make

  504. the descendants

  505. of Abram

  506. into a

  507. great nation.

  508. God

  509. Almighty

  510. would do

  511. this.

  512. You see

  513. God Almighty

  514. is self

  515. sufficient.

  516. And not just

  517. in the sense

  518. that we might

  519. use that term

  520. today.

  521. Self

  522. sufficiency

  523. has become a

  524. very popular

  525. lifestyle,

  526. hasn't it?

  527. Growing your

  528. own food,

  529. generating your

  530. own energy,

  531. making your

  532. own clothes.

  533. But the

  534. truth is that

  535. none of those

  536. things are

  537. actually self

  538. sufficient.

  539. They're all

  540. dependent upon

  541. other things.

  542. You still can't

  543. cut your hair

  544. without scissors.

  545. You can't grow

  546. food without

  547. seeds.

  548. You can't make

  549. clothes without

  550. needles and

  551. threads.

  552. You can't

  553. generate energy

  554. without wind

  555. and sun.

  556. Not even to

  557. mention that we

  558. wouldn't exist

  559. without mothers

  560. and fathers.

  561. Our best

  562. attempts at

  563. self-sufficiency

  564. are only a

  565. pale reflection

  566. of God's.

  567. In fact,

  568. there's no real

  569. comparison at

  570. all.

  571. Because God

  572. needs no

  573. thing and

  574. no one.

  575. He is the

  576. only one

  577. who is

  578. truly

  579. self

  580. sufficient.

  581. Now,

  582. such a God

  583. stands in

  584. complete contrast

  585. to the

  586. pagan gods

  587. of the

  588. ancient world.

  589. They were

  590. needy.

  591. They were

  592. high maintenance

  593. gods.

  594. They were

  595. dependent upon

  596. humans to

  597. give them

  598. all they

  599. needed.

  600. And they

  601. could get

  602. pretty angry

  603. if their

  604. worshippers

  605. didn't give

  606. them what

  607. they wanted.

  608. You might

  609. remember in

  610. Acts 17,

  611. the apostle

  612. Paul confronts

  613. the people

  614. of Athens

  615. with a God

  616. who is

  617. altogether

  618. different from

  619. these high

  620. maintenance

  621. gods.

  622. here's what

  623. he says,

  624. the God

  625. who made

  626. the world

  627. and everything

  628. in it

  629. is the

  630. Lord of

  631. heaven and

  632. earth

  633. and does

  634. not live

  635. in temples

  636. built by

  637. human hands

  638. as if

  639. he needed

  640. anything.

  641. Rather,

  642. he himself

  643. gives all

  644. men life

  645. and breath

  646. and everything

  647. else.

  648. God

  649. is the

  650. God

  651. of the

  652. Bible

  653. is God

  654. almighty.

  655. He needs

  656. nothing.

  657. He needs

  658. no one.

  659. Rather,

  660. he is the

  661. giver

  662. of everything.

  663. That's what

  664. Abram needs

  665. to know.

  666. This God

  667. is El

  668. Shaddai,

  669. God

  670. almighty,

  671. the self

  672. sufficient

  673. one.

  674. He doesn't

  675. need Abram

  676. to do

  677. anything.

  678. He doesn't

  679. need a

  680. servant.

  681. He doesn't

  682. need a

  683. nephew.

  684. He doesn't

  685. need an

  686. illegitimate

  687. child.

  688. He is

  689. God

  690. almighty,

  691. self

  692. sufficient,

  693. needing

  694. nothing and

  695. needing

  696. no one.

  697. self

  698. sufficient.

  699. But he's

  700. not only

  701. self

  702. sufficient,

  703. he is

  704. all

  705. sufficient.

  706. Maybe

  707. you've

  708. worked with

  709. someone who

  710. is self

  711. reliant.

  712. They don't

  713. need anyone

  714. or anything.

  715. They're at

  716. their happiest

  717. when they're

  718. working away

  719. on their

  720. own.

  721. They don't

  722. need anyone

  723. else to

  724. contribute.

  725. They don't

  726. welcome

  727. advice.

  728. They don't

  729. need help.

  730. But their

  731. self

  732. reliance

  733. isn't a

  734. good thing

  735. at all

  736. because they

  737. would do

  738. so much

  739. better with

  740. the input

  741. of others.

  742. Well God

  743. is not

  744. like that

  745. self

  746. reliant

  747. co-worker

  748. who achieves

  749. substandard

  750. results because

  751. he resents

  752. the help

  753. of others.

  754. Because God

  755. almighty is

  756. not only

  757. self

  758. sufficient,

  759. he is

  760. all

  761. sufficient.

  762. He has

  763. everything

  764. he needs

  765. within

  766. himself

  767. to do

  768. whatever

  769. he

  770. pleases.

  771. You see

  772. even

  773. Abram's

  774. dumb

  775. ideas

  776. have not

  777. derailed

  778. God's

  779. promise.

  780. Sarai's

  781. scheming

  782. is not

  783. going to

  784. frustrate

  785. his purpose.

  786. The king

  787. of Sodom

  788. nor the

  789. pharaoh

  790. of Egypt

  791. will be

  792. allowed to

  793. hinder his

  794. plans.

  795. Because the

  796. God who

  797. has made

  798. these

  799. promises

  800. is none

  801. other than

  802. God

  803. almighty.

  804. You and

  805. I sometimes

  806. make promises

  807. that we

  808. fully intend

  809. to fulfil

  810. but something

  811. gets in

  812. our way.

  813. We make

  814. plans but

  815. at the

  816. last minute

  817. through

  818. circumstances

  819. we can't

  820. control

  821. will our

  822. plans fail

  823. to materialise.

  824. it wasn't

  825. that we

  826. didn't

  827. want to

  828. do it

  829. it wasn't

  830. that we

  831. lacked the

  832. ability to

  833. do it

  834. but something

  835. prevented us

  836. from doing

  837. it.

  838. Well no

  839. thing

  840. and no

  841. one

  842. gets in

  843. the way

  844. of God

  845. almighty

  846. doing all

  847. that he

  848. promises.

  849. is this

  850. is what

  851. Abram

  852. needs.

  853. He doesn't

  854. need to

  855. understand

  856. how God

  857. is going

  858. to do

  859. what he

  860. promised.

  861. He only

  862. needs to

  863. know that

  864. the one

  865. who has

  866. made the

  867. promise

  868. is El

  869. Shaddai

  870. the self

  871. sufficient

  872. one

  873. the all

  874. sufficient

  875. one

  876. God

  877. almighty.

  878. but knowing

  879. more about

  880. God

  881. caused

  882. Abram

  883. to a

  884. deeper

  885. commitment

  886. to God.

  887. Look at

  888. the rest

  889. of verse

  890. one.

  891. I am

  892. God

  893. almighty

  894. walk

  895. before

  896. me

  897. and be

  898. blameless.

  899. You see

  900. knowing more

  901. about God

  902. caused

  903. Abram

  904. to a

  905. deeper

  906. commitment

  907. to God.

  908. God

  909. almighty

  910. will

  911. fulfill

  912. all of

  913. his

  914. promises

  915. to

  916. Abram.

  917. Abram

  918. doesn't

  919. need to

  920. concern

  921. himself

  922. with

  923. that

  924. at

  925. all.

  926. Rather

  927. Abram

  928. needs to

  929. concern

  930. himself

  931. with

  932. walking

  933. faithfully

  934. with

  935. God

  936. almighty.

  937. Abram's

  938. knowledge

  939. about

  940. God

  941. must

  942. change

  943. how he

  944. lives

  945. before

  946. God.

  947. We could

  948. say that

  949. it's an

  950. if-then

  951. kind of

  952. thing.

  953. We see

  954. those kind

  955. of statements

  956. in the

  957. New Testament.

  958. Jesus

  959. says,

  960. if you

  961. love me,

  962. keep

  963. my

  964. commandments.

  965. He isn't

  966. making his

  967. love for

  968. his disciples

  969. conditional

  970. upon their

  971. obedience.

  972. Instead,

  973. he's saying

  974. that if

  975. they love

  976. him,

  977. then they

  978. will do

  979. what he

  980. commands.

  981. If-then.

  982. The way

  983. that they

  984. live flows

  985. from their

  986. relationship

  987. to Jesus.

  988. The Apostle

  989. Paul will

  990. use the

  991. same kinds

  992. of arguments.

  993. Since

  994. then you

  995. have been

  996. raised with

  997. Christ,

  998. set your

  999. hearts on

  1000. things above

  1001. if-then.

  1002. Our

  1003. relationship

  1004. with Jesus

  1005. changes

  1006. our

  1007. lives

  1008. and our

  1009. affections.

  1010. Now that's

  1011. what's

  1012. happening in

  1013. the second

  1014. part of

  1015. verse 1.

  1016. I am

  1017. God

  1018. Almighty.

  1019. Walk

  1020. before me

  1021. faithfully

  1022. and be

  1023. blameless.

  1024. Abram's

  1025. knowledge

  1026. of God

  1027. must change

  1028. how he

  1029. lives

  1030. before

  1031. God.

  1032. And the

  1033. same is

  1034. true of

  1035. each one

  1036. of us.

  1037. Now a

  1038. strange thing

  1039. happens in

  1040. these chapters

  1041. doesn't it?

  1042. God changes

  1043. the names

  1044. of Abram

  1045. and Sarai.

  1046. In verse

  1047. 5 Abram

  1048. will be

  1049. Abraham

  1050. father of

  1051. many.

  1052. And verse

  1053. 15 Sarai

  1054. will be

  1055. Sarah

  1056. princess

  1057. because from

  1058. her will

  1059. come

  1060. kings.

  1061. It all

  1062. sounds

  1063. wonderful

  1064. doesn't

  1065. it?

  1066. But tell

  1067. me this

  1068. who has

  1069. the right

  1070. to change

  1071. anyone's

  1072. name.

  1073. Who has

  1074. the right

  1075. to do

  1076. that?

  1077. Well

  1078. God

  1079. Almighty

  1080. does

  1081. because

  1082. God

  1083. Almighty

  1084. defines

  1085. our

  1086. identity

  1087. as he

  1088. did with

  1089. Abram

  1090. and

  1091. Sarai.

  1092. We live

  1093. in a

  1094. time where

  1095. self

  1096. is the

  1097. God

  1098. of the

  1099. age.

  1100. Gender

  1101. is no

  1102. longer

  1103. defined by

  1104. biology.

  1105. no one

  1106. can tell

  1107. a woman

  1108. what to

  1109. do

  1110. with

  1111. her

  1112. body.

  1113. Consent

  1114. is the

  1115. only

  1116. sexual

  1117. boundary.

  1118. And when

  1119. we're

  1120. surrounded

  1121. by that

  1122. kind of

  1123. culture

  1124. all of

  1125. the time

  1126. that

  1127. bows

  1128. the

  1129. knee

  1130. to

  1131. the

  1132. God

  1133. of

  1134. self,

  1135. we can

  1136. too easily

  1137. forget

  1138. that it

  1139. is God

  1140. Almighty

  1141. who defines

  1142. our

  1143. identity.

  1144. That our

  1145. lives are

  1146. not our

  1147. own to

  1148. do

  1149. with

  1150. as we

  1151. please.

  1152. That we

  1153. are to

  1154. walk

  1155. before

  1156. God

  1157. faithfully

  1158. and be

  1159. blameless.

  1160. You see

  1161. God

  1162. Almighty

  1163. defines

  1164. our

  1165. identity

  1166. because

  1167. we

  1168. belong

  1169. to

  1170. him.

  1171. And

  1172. everything

  1173. we have

  1174. belongs

  1175. to

  1176. him.

  1177. Now I

  1178. don't know

  1179. if you've

  1180. ever shared

  1181. a house

  1182. with somebody

  1183. else.

  1184. Maybe at

  1185. college you

  1186. shared a

  1187. house with

  1188. other

  1189. students.

  1190. Well it

  1191. was my

  1192. experience

  1193. during

  1194. college

  1195. years

  1196. that there

  1197. was only

  1198. one way

  1199. that you

  1200. could have

  1201. any hope

  1202. of putting

  1203. something in

  1204. the fridge

  1205. and it

  1206. still being

  1207. there when

  1208. you went

  1209. back later.

  1210. You wrote

  1211. your name

  1212. on it.

  1213. You not only

  1214. wrote your

  1215. name on it,

  1216. you wrote

  1217. your name

  1218. all over

  1219. it.

  1220. You wrote

  1221. your name

  1222. all over

  1223. it in

  1224. big bold

  1225. capital

  1226. letters so

  1227. nobody

  1228. could miss

  1229. it.

  1230. this is

  1231. Martin's

  1232. and you

  1233. can be

  1234. sure that

  1235. it still

  1236. would be

  1237. gone from

  1238. the fridge

  1239. when you

  1240. went to

  1241. find it.

  1242. Well in

  1243. the rest

  1244. of this

  1245. story that

  1246. filled the

  1247. most of

  1248. our reading

  1249. actually

  1250. it's as

  1251. though God

  1252. takes a

  1253. big black

  1254. marker

  1255. and writes

  1256. his name

  1257. in big

  1258. bold

  1259. letters

  1260. all over

  1261. Abraham

  1262. and everything

  1263. that Abraham

  1264. owns.

  1265. It's the

  1266. sign of

  1267. circumcision.

  1268. I'd love to

  1269. have counted

  1270. how many

  1271. times the

  1272. word

  1273. circumcision

  1274. or circumcised

  1275. was said

  1276. in that

  1277. chapter.

  1278. But that's

  1279. what God

  1280. is doing

  1281. with each

  1282. cut of

  1283. the flesh

  1284. God

  1285. Almighty

  1286. is saying

  1287. this is

  1288. mine.

  1289. He

  1290. belongs

  1291. to me.

  1292. And the

  1293. fact that

  1294. Abraham

  1295. belonged

  1296. to God

  1297. changed

  1298. how

  1299. Abraham

  1300. was to

  1301. live.

  1302. Didn't

  1303. the Apostle

  1304. Paul write

  1305. to the

  1306. church in

  1307. Corinth

  1308. you are

  1309. not your

  1310. own

  1311. you were

  1312. bought

  1313. at a

  1314. price.

  1315. and that

  1316. price was

  1317. the death

  1318. of God's

  1319. own

  1320. son.

  1321. We were

  1322. covenant

  1323. breakers

  1324. deserving to

  1325. be cut

  1326. off from

  1327. God

  1328. and his

  1329. people

  1330. and that

  1331. was what

  1332. circumcision

  1333. signified

  1334. but Jesus

  1335. was cut

  1336. off in

  1337. our

  1338. place.

  1339. We are

  1340. not our

  1341. own

  1342. we were

  1343. bought

  1344. at a

  1345. price

  1346. therefore

  1347. Paul says

  1348. honour

  1349. God

  1350. with

  1351. your

  1352. bodies.

  1353. They are

  1354. not yours

  1355. to do

  1356. with

  1357. as you

  1358. please.

  1359. If you

  1360. belong to

  1361. Jesus

  1362. they belong

  1363. to him

  1364. and it's

  1365. he who

  1366. defines

  1367. your

  1368. identity

  1369. and has

  1370. a right

  1371. to say

  1372. how you

  1373. live

  1374. and how

  1375. you use

  1376. your

  1377. bodies.

  1378. In fact

  1379. how you

  1380. use

  1381. everything

  1382. that belongs

  1383. to you.

  1384. So as

  1385. those who

  1386. have been

  1387. bought

  1388. at a

  1389. price

  1390. by the

  1391. death

  1392. of

  1393. Jesus

  1394. as

  1395. those

  1396. belonging

  1397. to him

  1398. let us

  1399. live as

  1400. people who

  1401. trust God's

  1402. promises in

  1403. Jesus.

  1404. Let's

  1405. trust the

  1406. God who

  1407. is both

  1408. self-sufficient

  1409. and all

  1410. sufficient.

  1411. Let's not

  1412. only address

  1413. him by this

  1414. name when

  1415. we pray

  1416. El Shaddai

  1417. God

  1418. Almighty

  1419. but let

  1420. us learn

  1421. to live

  1422. as though

  1423. the God

  1424. we pray

  1425. to

  1426. really

  1427. is

  1428. what he

  1429. says he

  1430. is

  1431. God

  1432. Almighty.

  1433. Let's

  1434. pray

  1435. together.

  1436. Father

  1437. we confess

  1438. that too

  1439. often we

  1440. go through

  1441. life like

  1442. Abram

  1443. and Sarah

  1444. feeling to

  1445. rest in

  1446. the promises

  1447. of God

  1448. and doing

  1449. everything we

  1450. possibly can

  1451. to

  1452. fulfil

  1453. your

  1454. promises

  1455. to us.

  1456. Oh

  1457. Father may

  1458. we learn

  1459. that such

  1460. a path

  1461. takes us

  1462. to the

  1463. end of

  1464. ourselves

  1465. and forces

  1466. us back

  1467. to you

  1468. and may

  1469. we learn

  1470. to be

  1471. people who

  1472. trust

  1473. you.

  1474. May we

  1475. grasp

  1476. that you

  1477. really are

  1478. God

  1479. Almighty

  1480. that nothing

  1481. is outside

  1482. of your

  1483. control.

  1484. That not

  1485. one thing

  1486. or no

  1487. one can

  1488. frustrate

  1489. your purposes

  1490. for your

  1491. people.

  1492. And Father

  1493. may we

  1494. learn to

  1495. rest in

  1496. that

  1497. knowledge.

  1498. And

  1499. Father we

  1500. pray that

  1501. we are

  1502. people that

  1503. as our

  1504. knowledge of

  1505. you

  1506. increases

  1507. that so

  1508. our commitment

  1509. before you

  1510. increases

  1511. that we

  1512. walk before

  1513. you

  1514. faithfully

  1515. in light

  1516. of the

  1517. knowledge of

  1518. what we

  1519. know of

  1520. you.

  1521. Father may

  1522. we grasp

  1523. that everything

  1524. we have

  1525. belongs to

  1526. you.

  1527. That we

  1528. were bought

  1529. at a price

  1530. by the

  1531. death of

  1532. your son

  1533. the Lord

  1534. Jesus.

  1535. That just

  1536. as you

  1537. had the

  1538. right to

  1539. rename

  1540. Abram and

  1541. Sarah

  1542. to define

  1543. who they

  1544. were so

  1545. you have

  1546. the right

  1547. to define

  1548. who we

  1549. are and

  1550. how we

  1551. should live

  1552. and what

  1553. we should

  1554. do.

  1555. And may

  1556. we learn

  1557. not to

  1558. resist

  1559. such a

  1560. thing

  1561. but to

  1562. grasp that

  1563. there is

  1564. real freedom

  1565. in knowing

  1566. who you've

  1567. made us

  1568. to be.

  1569. May we

  1570. learn to

  1571. rest in

  1572. that knowledge

  1573. and walk

  1574. faithfully

  1575. before you

  1576. and we

  1577. ask this

  1578. in the

  1579. name of

  1580. our Lord

  1581. Jesus.

  1582. Amen.

  1583. Well the guys

  1584. are going to

  1585. return and

  1586. we're going to

  1587. say
