  1. But I strongly recommend flicking to it, because apart from anything else, you should want to check whether what I'm saying is actually in this text,

  2. or whether I'm just making something up to talk to you about this morning.

  3. And I'd encourage you as well to keep it open throughout the sermon, because we'll be referring back to it, of course, throughout that time.

  4. And again, being able to understand that when I say, like, let's look at verse 8, we look at verse 8 and verse 8 has something to tell us in that kind of way.

  5. So the passage, as I say, is Acts chapter 4, verse 32 to Acts chapter 5, verse 11.

    Acts 4:32 Acts 5:11

  6. Now, all the believers were one in heart and mind.

  7. No one claimed that any of their possessions was their own, but they shared everything they had.

  8. With great power, the apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus.

  9. And God's grace was so powerfully at work in them all that there was no needy person among them.

  10. For from time to time, those who owned land or houses sold them, brought the money from the sales, and put it at the apostles' feet.

  11. And it was distributed to anyone who had need.

  12. Joseph, a Levite from Cyprus, whom the apostles called Barnabas, which means son of encouragement, sold a field he owned and brought the money and put it at the apostles' feet.

  13. Now, a man named Ananias, together with his wife Sapphira, also sold a piece of property.

  14. With his wife's full knowledge, he kept back part of the money for himself, but brought the rest and put it at the apostles' feet.

  15. Then Peter said, Ananias, how is it that Satan has so filled your heart that you have lied to the Holy Spirit and have kept for yourself some of the money you received for the land?

  16. Didn't it belong to you before it was sold?

  17. And after it was sold, wasn't the money at your disposal?

  18. What made you think of doing such a thing?

  19. You have not lied just to human beings, but to God.

  20. When Ananias heard this, he fell down and died.

  21. And great fear seized all who heard what had happened.

  22. Then some young men came forward, wrapped up his body and carried him out and buried him.

  23. About three hours later, his wife came in, not knowing what had happened.

  24. Peter asked her, tell me, is this the price you and Ananias got for the land?

  25. Yes, she said, that is the price.

  26. Peter said to her, how could you conspire to test the spirit of the Lord?

  27. Listen, the feet of the men who buried your husband are at the door and they will carry you out also.

  28. At that moment, she fell down at his feet and died.

  29. Then the young men came in and finding her dead, carried her out and buried her beside her husband.

  30. Great fear seized the whole church and all who heard about these events.

  31. Before I start talking about this, let's take time to pray together as we come to look at God's word together.

  32. Heavenly Father, we thank you for your word.

  33. We thank you for all that is in it, both the easy passages that we like and the difficult passages that are awkward for us to understand.

  34. As we come to look at this passage this morning, we pray that you would be softening our hearts to understand the message, but also to respond to it.

  35. I pray, Lord, that as I speak, if anything is not from you, then it would quickly be forgotten by everyone here.

  36. But Lord, I pray that any word that is from you would be enduring and lasting, not just in our memories, but in our lives and our actions as well.

  37. I pray that you will help all of us, including me, to listen, to hear, to respond.

  38. In Jesus' name, I pray these things. Amen.

  39. Money.

  40. Money is one of those things that tends to grab people's attention, isn't it?

  41. A few weeks ago, I was on a train from Cork to Dublin, and there were two IT consultants across the aisle from me,

  42. and they were talking quite loudly about data security in one of their clients.

  43. And everyone was doing their best, their absolute utmost, to ignore what they were saying,

  44. because they weren't particularly interested, riveting topic though it is.

  45. And then something changed.

  46. One of them said to the other,

  47. Yeah, it's probably going to be about 50 grand, isn't it?

  48. At that, I looked up.

  49. Not so much at them, but at everyone else in the carriage,

  50. to see how everyone would react to a number like that just being thrown out casually in conversation.

  51. And a remarkable change had come on all of them.

  52. Suddenly, everyone was very interested in this conversation that was being had about data security.

  53. You'd think it was the most interesting thing they had heard all week.

  54. We tend to notice when money is mentioned, either consciously or subconsciously, we tend to notice that.

  55. And I'm sure that many of you noticed it was mentioned in the passage today.

  56. In fact, money and possessions play a key role in the passage, don't they?

  57. And because money and possessions play a key role in the passage, we can't really ignore them as we go through it.

  58. And so I just want to take a couple of minutes before we go on to talking about what may be a sensitive topic for some people,

  59. to check in on two elephants that people may see in the room.

  60. And those two elephants ask two main questions.

  61. One, how is the preacher qualified to talk about money?

  62. The guy up the front, what does he know about money?

  63. And two, does he stand to profit or to gain from talking about money in some way?

  64. Is he going to go out and buy a private jet somewhere after the service if you give him all your money, so to speak?

  65. Now, as many people will know here, or at least hopefully know, I'm not Johnny Grant.

  66. I'm not the pastor of this church.

  67. I'm not tall enough.

  68. I'm not indeed the pastor of any church.

  69. I work in financial services.

  70. And so I have a bunch of qualifications and letters after my name that all have to do with money.

  71. I've thrown them up on the screen there.

  72. There's a bunch of letters that I don't really like to use.

  73. I'm almost embarrassed to put them on the screen there, but I put them up there for two reasons.

  74. The first is to emphasize that none of this is in any way beneficial when talking about money as far as the Bible is concerned.

  75. So you can see up there, I'm a financial advisor.

  76. I'm an actuary.

  77. I do financial reporting.

  78. Accountant, actuary, financial advisor.

  79. What they can tell you or what we can tell you generally is how much money do you have?

  80. What should you do with your money to achieve the goals that you have?

  81. And generally, maybe how you should go about investing or spending to achieve those goals,

  82. what amount of money you need for certain things, and so on.

  83. What we can't tell you is what you should or should not do with your money.

  84. We can't tell you what your financial goals should be or how you should view money in general.

  85. Meanwhile, God says quite a lot about all of those topics in the Bible,

  86. and he is a far more authoritative source than any human could be,

  87. and certainly far more authoritative than I am.

  88. So who am I to talk about money, that first question?

  89. Well, in this context, nobody.

  90. I'm nobody.

  91. But insofar as my words align with what the Bible says, they will be good.

  92. So we'll aim for that throughout this.

  93. And the second reason I put the qualifications on the screen is to address one second elephant in the room.

  94. So as you're probably aware, there are several so-called preachers or pastors in various parts of the world,

  95. particularly in the United States where they have these sort of mega churches, etc.,

  96. who would use, let's say, cherry-picked verses from Scripture to try to get you to give them money

  97. to manipulate people into donating large sums of money that they can then use to build or buy mansions

  98. or acquire private jets for themselves.

  99. So it's right to be wary of falling into that kind of trap.

  100. But in my case, I work in the financial services sector.

  101. I'm not now, nor have I ever been employed by a church.

  102. And to the best of my knowledge, I have never received any financial reward or compensation or anything like that

  103. for any church-related work I do.

  104. So there is no vested interest there.

  105. As one final thought before we delve in,

  106. I will say to you now that even though this passage talks about money and possessions,

  107. at its core, I don't think this passage is actually about money.

  108. It's about something that's a whole lot deeper than that.

  109. But in order to understand what the passage is about,

  110. we need to understand what the Bible does say about money, both in this passage and outside it.

  111. So with all of that caveat out of the way, let's dive into the text here.

  112. We start off in verse 32 of chapter 4.

  113. And this first paragraph we have here, from verse 32 to verse 35,

  114. showcases some extraordinary generosity, doesn't it?

  115. At the end of verse 32, we read that the believers shared everything they had.

  116. And verses 34 to 35 become even more remarkable.

  117. We read that there was no needy person among them,

  118. for from time to time those who owned land or houses sold them,

  119. brought the money from the sales, put it at the apostles' feet,

  120. and it was distributed to anyone who had a need.

  121. This is extraordinary generosity.

  122. You can see that even in our own world today.

  123. People don't generally or typically sell property in order to give to the poor and needy.

  124. And we might be prompted to ask, well, what causes this?

  125. How or why are they being so generous?

  126. Well, verse 32 gives us one unifying fact about all of them.

  127. It says all the believers were one in heart and mind.

  128. So who are the believers?

  129. Well, that may be a bit of a silly question to ask in a church on a Sunday morning.

  130. The Christians are the believers.

  131. The believers are the Christians, right?

  132. But what do they believe?

  133. Well, you can see if you flip back to the end of chapter 2,

  134. you can see chapter 2, verse 42.

  135. They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching.

  136. So what were the apostles' teaching?

  137. Well, verse 33 of chapter 4, our passage here, gives us the answer.

  138. With great power, the apostles continued to testify to what?

  139. To the resurrection of the Lord Jesus.

  140. They testified to Jesus' death, yes,

  141. but they also testified to his resurrection.

  142. And that's what the author actually focuses on both here and throughout Acts.

  143. So by the time we get to this passage, chapter 4 of Acts,

  144. the author has told us at least seven times that Jesus has been raised from the dead.

  145. In Acts chapter 1, we have verse 3.

    Acts 1 chapter mention

  146. It says he gave many convincing proofs that he was alive.

  147. Verse 22, when choosing who would replace Judas,

  148. Peter says that someone must become a witness with us of his resurrection.

  149. In Acts chapter 2, we have verses 23 and 24.

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  150. You put him to death by nailing him to the cross,

  151. but God raised him from the dead.

  152. It was impossible for death to keep its hold on him.

  153. Again, in Acts chapter 2, verses 31 and 32,

    Acts 2:31

  154. David spoke of the resurrection of the Messiah.

  155. God has raised this Jesus to life, and we are all witnesses of it.

  156. Acts 3.15, you killed the author of life,

  157. but God raised him from the dead.

  158. Acts chapter 4, verse 2,

    Acts 4:2

  159. the priests and Sadducees were greatly disturbed.

  160. Why?

  161. Because the apostles were teaching the people,

  162. proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection of the dead.

  163. And Acts chapter 4, verse 9,

    Acts 4:9

  164. we have, it is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth,

  165. whom you crucify, but whom God raised from the dead.

  166. And then here in verse 33 of our passage,

  167. the apostles continued to testify

  168. to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus.

  169. The church was born in the proclamation of the resurrection.

  170. And if you think about it, actually, for a minute,

  171. Jesus' death means nothing without the resurrection.

  172. Imagine how hollow the gospel would be if he had stayed dead.

  173. We'd be left saying,

  174. Jesus was a good man.

  175. He never sinned.

  176. And now he's dead.

  177. That's not the gospel.

  178. That's not good news.

  179. Jesus' death is only good news

  180. because of the resurrection that followed.

  181. And you can pick out a ton of writing in the New Testament

  182. that makes that point.

  183. So Romans chapter 4, verse 25,

    Romans 4:25

  184. he was delivered over to death for our sins.

  185. And he was raised to life for our justification.

  186. Romans 6, 4,

  187. just as Jesus Christ was raised from the dead

  188. through the glory of the Father,

  189. we too may live a new life.

  190. Romans 10, 9,

  191. so if you may know it,

  192. if you declare with your mouth,

  193. Jesus is Lord,

  194. and believe in your heart,

  195. what?

  196. That God raised him from the dead,

  197. you will be saved.

  198. 1 Corinthians 6, 14,

  199. by his power,

  200. God raised the Lord from the dead,

  201. and he will raise us also.

  202. So Jesus' resurrection

  203. is tied to our resurrection.

  204. It's tied to our ultimate fate.

  205. And we depend on Jesus' resurrection

  206. just as much as on his death,

  207. if not more so.

  208. In fact, later in 1 Corinthians,

  209. Paul makes that exact argument.

  210. He makes it abundantly clear.

  211. He says things like,

  212. if Christ has not been raised,

  213. our preaching is useless,

  214. and so is your faith.

  215. And again,

  216. if Christ has not been raised,

  217. your faith is futile.

  218. You are still in your sins.

  219. And if we have hope in Christ

  220. only for this life,

  221. then we are of all people

  222. most to be pitied.

  223. And against all of that,

  224. Paul just has one simple argument.

  225. But he has been raised.

  226. And there is so much more

  227. that could be said

  228. about the resurrection.

  229. It's the foundation of our hope.

  230. the resurrection changes our futures

  231. if we're trusting in Jesus.

  232. But coming back to our passage today,

  233. it's also the foundation

  234. of everything that happens

  235. in verses 32 to 35.

  236. Why do I say that?

  237. Well, what happens

  238. when you believe in the resurrection?

  239. You see a different future ahead of you.

  240. And that changes your heart.

  241. The resurrection changes our future

  242. and our hearts.

  243. If we want to be specific to this passage,

  244. talking about possessions and money,

  245. what does that mean

  246. for our view of possessions and money?

  247. What does it mean for our hearts

  248. in respect of those sides of things?

  249. Because we have to see here

  250. that the people's generosity here,

  251. giving to the poor and needy,

  252. ensuring there wasn't one among them,

  253. even being willing to sell property

  254. to make sure that was the case.

  255. Well, this is something

  256. that flows out of their faith

  257. in the resurrection.

  258. How do we know that?

  259. Well, we're told that the believers

  260. did these things to support each other.

  261. But in order to sell property,

  262. you first have to have property,

  263. don't you?

  264. And as these are new believers

  265. here in Acts 4,

  266. we know that they chose

  267. to accumulate this wealth

  268. before they became believers.

  269. The only thing that has changed here

  270. is that they are now believers

  271. in the resurrection.

  272. And now they are giving it away.

  273. They're selling.

  274. They're distributing.

  275. They're making sure

  276. that there's no one needy among them.

  277. So why does this change them?

  278. Well, suppose for a moment

  279. that this life is all there is,

  280. which is a mortifying thought

  281. to begin with.

  282. But suppose for a moment

  283. this life is all there is.

  284. That seems logical

  285. to live,

  286. drink,

  287. be merry.

  288. We know how short

  289. our lives are.

  290. If this earth is all there is,

  291. then it's better to live it

  292. with plenty of money.

  293. It's better to live it

  294. with plenty of comfort,

  295. isn't it?

  296. And we can be tempted

  297. even to rejoice

  298. in that wealth

  299. and in that comfort.

  300. In fact,

  301. in Psalm 119,

  302. when the psalmist

  303. wants a simile

  304. to describe

  305. how much he loves

  306. God's law,

  307. something that everyone

  308. will understand,

  309. he says in verse 14,

  310. I rejoice

  311. in following your statutes

  312. as one rejoices

  313. in great riches.

  314. He wants to talk

  315. about how much

  316. he loves God's law

  317. and the best comparison

  318. he can give

  319. in terms of earthly joy

  320. is having great riches.

  321. And even if we know

  322. that this is all

  323. not going to last,

  324. we're ultimately

  325. going to die

  326. even if we think

  327. that's the case

  328. and we know

  329. that the treasures

  330. will ultimately perish

  331. and fade away,

  332. if this world

  333. is all there is,

  334. then it makes sense

  335. to store up treasure here.

  336. Meanwhile,

  337. the resurrection

  338. changes all of that.

  339. Suddenly we're sure

  340. of an eternal life

  341. that puts this life

  342. into context

  343. and makes it look

  344. pathetically short.

  345. And if there is

  346. a resurrection to come,

  347. if there's new life

  348. to come,

  349. and we gain access

  350. to that through Jesus,

  351. then suddenly treasure here

  352. doesn't really matter

  353. all that much.

  354. It's only around

  355. for the tiniest sliver

  356. of the eternal lives

  357. that we will have.

  358. So if you believe

  359. in the resurrection,

  360. if we believe

  361. in the resurrection,

  362. then we believe

  363. that our genuine faith,

  364. to use the words

  365. of 1 Peter,

  366. we believe that

  367. our genuine faith

  368. is of more worth

  369. than gold,

  370. which perishes

  371. even though refined

  372. by fire,

  373. because it lasts.

  374. We believe that

  375. the resurrection

  376. of Jesus Christ

  377. from the dead

  378. has given us

  379. new birth

  380. into a living hope

  381. and into an inheritance

  382. that can never perish,

  383. spoil,

  384. or fade,

  385. kept in heaven for us.

  386. And that fundamentally

  387. changes how we look

  388. at money

  389. and earthly treasure

  390. and possessions now.

  391. As Paul says

  392. in 1 Timothy chapter 6,

    1 Timothy 6 chapter mention

  393. it says,

  394. Command those who are rich

  395. in this present world

  396. not to be arrogant,

  397. nor to put their hope

  398. in wealth,

  399. which is so uncertain,

  400. but to put their hope

  401. in God,

  402. who richly provides

  403. everything for our enjoyment.

  404. Command them,

  405. command those who are rich

  406. in this present age

  407. to do good,

  408. to be rich

  409. in good deeds,

  410. and to be generous

  411. and willing to share.

  412. In this way,

  413. they will lay up treasure

  414. for themselves

  415. as a firm foundation

  416. in the coming age,

  417. so that they may

  418. take hold of that life

  419. which is truly life.

  420. Jesus himself said

  421. something similar

  422. in Matthew chapter 6.

    Matthew 6 chapter mention

  423. He said,

  424. Do not store up

  425. for yourselves

  426. treasures on earth

  427. where moths and vermin destroy,

  428. where thieves break in

  429. and steal,

  430. but store up for yourselves

  431. treasures in heaven

  432. where moths and vermin

  433. do not destroy

  434. and where thieves

  435. do not break in

  436. and steal.

  437. Why does Jesus

  438. give that advice?

  439. Well, he tells us

  440. in the next words.

  441. Store up for yourselves

  442. treasure in heaven

  443. for where your treasure is,

  444. there your heart is also.

  445. Earlier I said

  446. the core message

  447. of this passage

  448. I didn't believe

  449. was about money.

  450. And this is what I mean.

  451. It's fundamentally

  452. not about money,

  453. but it's about our hearts.

  454. This passage

  455. is a really practical

  456. worked example

  457. of one of the things

  458. that Jesus taught,

  459. which is that money

  460. is a real indicator

  461. of where our hearts lie.

  462. Now, money is just

  463. an indicator

  464. of where our hearts lie.

  465. It's not the be-all

  466. and end-all

  467. in and of itself.

  468. But it is a powerful indicator

  469. of where our hearts lie.

  470. And look at what the author

  471. does between verses 33

  472. and 34 here.

  473. In verse 33,

  474. he talks about God's grace

  475. being so powerfully

  476. at work in them.

  477. God's grace.

  478. God's free gift.

  479. And then he links that in

  480. with their not being

  481. a needy person

  482. among them.

  483. So how does that work

  484. in practice?

  485. Do we see that

  486. when God saves people,

  487. he creates a money tree

  488. for the new believers?

  489. Or do we see that

  490. in saving these people,

  491. he gives them

  492. some sort of new skills

  493. or work attitude

  494. that means that they're able

  495. to improve their financial

  496. condition themselves

  497. or that sort of thing?

  498. Well, no.

  499. God's grace led

  500. to there being

  501. no needy people

  502. among them

  503. for or through

  504. the means of

  505. verses 34 to 35.

  506. Those who owned

  507. or land or houses

  508. sold them.

  509. They brought the money

  510. from the sales.

  511. They put it at the apostles' feet.

  512. It was distributed

  513. to those who had need.

  514. God's grace is tied

  515. directly into how believers

  516. act with money.

  517. I think it was something

  518. that Ralph was saying earlier.

  519. Real faith

  520. or real worship of God

  521. leads to a change

  522. in our actions.

  523. I want to be careful here.

  524. I want to be really careful here.

  525. This is not a contradiction

  526. of the gospel message.

  527. If you're following Christ,

  528. then you are saved

  529. by grace alone,

  530. through faith alone,

  531. in Christ alone,

  532. to the glory of God alone.

  533. And two of the clearest

  534. verses in all of Scripture

  535. that point to that

  536. are Ephesians 2,

    Ephesians 2:8

  537. verses 8 and 9.

  538. If you went to camps

  539. or clubs as a child,

  540. you may know those

  541. of us as well.

  542. For it is by grace

  543. you have been saved,

  544. through faith.

  545. And this is not of yourselves.

  546. There's a gift of God,

  547. not by works,

  548. so that no one can boast.

  549. Saved by grace,

  550. through faith.

  551. But we can't detach

  552. verses 8 and 9

  553. from verse 10.

  554. Verse 10,

  555. which says,

  556. we are God's workmanship,

  557. created in Christ Jesus

  558. to do good works,

  559. which God prepared

  560. in advance

  561. for us to do.

  562. And one of those good works,

  563. referenced all the way

  564. through Scripture,

  565. is help the poor.

  566. In the law,

  567. we read various requirements

  568. to help the poor.

  569. If you read the first five books

  570. of the Bible,

  571. we have, for example,

  572. one of the tithes

  573. goes towards helping them.

  574. Farm owners are forbidden

  575. to glean to the edges

  576. of their fields

  577. so that people can come along

  578. and make sure they have food.

  579. The poor can have

  580. something to eat.

  581. If you look at the prophets,

  582. the treatment of the poor

  583. is tied to righteousness

  584. and unrighteousness.

  585. Isaiah 3,

  586. we have,

  587. the Lord enters into judgment

  588. against the elders

  589. and leaders of the people.

  590. It is you

  591. who have ruined my vineyard.

  592. The plunder from the poor

  593. is in your houses.

  594. What do you mean

  595. by crushing my people

  596. and grinding the faces

  597. of the poor?

  598. Or Jeremiah 2,

    Jeremiah 2:34

  599. verse 34,

  600. on your clothes

  601. is found the lifeblood

  602. of the innocent poor.

  603. Ezekiel 16,

  604. this was the sin of Sodom.

  605. If you know Genesis,

  606. you might think,

  607. oh, well,

  608. the sin of Sodom

  609. was relating to sexual immorality

  610. and impurity.

  611. Ezekiel 16,

  612. this was the sin of Sodom.

  613. She and her daughters

  614. were arrogant,

  615. overfed,

  616. and unconcerned.

  617. They did not help

  618. the poor and needy.

  619. And then by contrast

  620. in Isaiah 57,

  621. God sets out

  622. what he wants

  623. from his people.

  624. Is it not to share

  625. your food with the hungry?

  626. To provide the poor wanderer

  627. with shelter?

  628. When you see the naked

  629. to clothe them

  630. and not to turn away

  631. your own flesh and blood?

  632. In the New Testament,

  633. I could point you

  634. to the Gospels

  635. or to James.

  636. Concern for the poor

  637. comes across really clearly

  638. in those.

  639. But I think maybe

  640. the best place to go

  641. for us may be Galatians.

  642. Because Galatians

  643. has one major message

  644. from start to finish.

  645. If you know that book,

  646. it is you are saved

  647. by grace,

  648. through faith,

  649. and not by works.

  650. That is the summary

  651. of Galatians

  652. in one sentence.

  653. At the start

  654. of chapter 2,

  655. Paul talks about

  656. going to Jerusalem

  657. to discuss the message

  658. of salvation

  659. with Peter,

  660. James,

  661. and John.

  662. He says that they

  663. agreed with his message.

  664. They gave the right hand

  665. of fellowship

  666. to Barnabas and to me

  667. when they recognized

  668. the grace that was given

  669. to me.

  670. They agreed that we

  671. should go to the Gentiles

  672. and they to the circumcised.

  673. So first,

  674. they discussed and agreed

  675. the fundamental message

  676. of the Gospel.

  677. And the only other thing

  678. that Paul mentions

  679. from this meeting

  680. comes in verse 10.

  681. All they asked,

  682. the only other thing,

  683. was that we should continue

  684. to remember the poor.

  685. The very thing

  686. I've been eager to do

  687. all along.

  688. Even in the quintessential

  689. grace not works

  690. letter of the New Testament,

  691. Paul can't avoid

  692. mentioning helping the poor

  693. and mentioning it

  694. in the same breath

  695. as the Gospel itself.

  696. And in this passage

  697. we see this is related

  698. to the believers.

  699. But this isn't restricted

  700. to the believers.

  701. We have passages

  702. like Galatians 6

  703. which says,

  704. do good to all.

  705. It says especially

  706. to the family of the church,

  707. especially to the believers.

  708. But do good to all

  709. is not restricted

  710. to the believers.

  711. Help the poor.

  712. And helping the poor

  713. is exactly what

  714. the early church did.

  715. We see it in this passage here.

  716. But it also continued

  717. for years after this.

  718. Some of the people

  719. in Rooted will have heard

  720. me a quote

  721. from Mike Duncan before.

  722. He's a secular historian

  723. who specialised

  724. in the history of Rome.

  725. If you're interested,

  726. his podcast is like

  727. 70 hours

  728. on the history

  729. of ancient Rome.

  730. And describing

  731. the Roman citizens'

  732. reaction

  733. to the great persecution

  734. of the Christians

  735. in the early 300s AD.

  736. So nearly 300 years

  737. after the events of Acts,

  738. he writes

  739. that the Christians

  740. were by the citizens

  741. by this time

  742. widely viewed

  743. as a harmless cult

  744. comprised of law-abiding,

  745. tax-paying citizens

  746. whose most visible

  747. public act

  748. was what?

  749. Tending to the poor

  750. and sick?

  751. That was their most

  752. visible public act.

  753. That's what the early church did.

  754. What about us today?

  755. We have,

  756. I would really hope,

  757. we have the same faith,

  758. the same hope,

  759. the same God,

  760. the same knowledge

  761. of the resurrection.

  762. So what should that

  763. lead us to?

  764. It might be tempting

  765. to say,

  766. you know,

  767. selling property, etc.

  768. This is only something

  769. for the mega-rich.

  770. If you have property

  771. lying around,

  772. then, you know,

  773. what greater parallel

  774. or what easier parallel

  775. could you find here?

  776. It's not presented

  777. as a necessity

  778. or required of everyone

  779. since that's something

  780. that everyone seems

  781. to have done voluntarily.

  782. But it's not presented

  783. as fanatical

  784. or a step too far either.

  785. But we also need

  786. to recognize

  787. that most,

  788. if not all of us,

  789. fall into the category

  790. of rich here.

  791. We all have things

  792. that we can give up.

  793. If we look globally

  794. around the world,

  795. we are one of the richest

  796. nations in the world.

  797. I'm standing up here

  798. in clothes,

  799. if we include, like,

  800. watch, shoes,

  801. everything I'm wearing

  802. at the moment,

  803. I'm standing up here

  804. in clothes

  805. that I probably paid

  806. more for

  807. than some people

  808. get paid in a year

  809. for work.

  810. We have wealth.

  811. And we know

  812. all too well

  813. what need exists

  814. in the world,

  815. don't we?

  816. Close to home

  817. in Ireland,

  818. we know that

  819. over 10,000 people

  820. are homeless,

  821. each one a story.

  822. And 10%

  823. of the population

  824. is estimated

  825. to live in food poverty.

  826. And we know

  827. what's happening

  828. with inflation

  829. at the moment.

  830. We know

  831. what's happening there.

  832. We can't ignore that.

  833. That's just going

  834. to rise,

  835. isn't it?

  836. Further away

  837. from home,

  838. we know well

  839. from the news

  840. what's happening

  841. in Ukraine.

  842. Similarly,

  843. in Yemen,

  844. it's estimated

  845. that over half a million

  846. are at acute risk

  847. of starvation.

  848. And that's the number

  849. of children,

  850. never mind the adults.

  851. As James says,

  852. suppose a brother

  853. or sister

  854. is without clothes,

  855. daily food.

  856. If one of you

  857. says to them,

  858. go in peace,

  859. keep warm

  860. and well fed,

  861. but does nothing

  862. about their physical needs,

  863. what good is it?

  864. So there are

  865. some easy questions

  866. we can ask ourselves

  867. on a personal level,

  868. on an individual level.

  869. One of the ones

  870. that the charities

  871. would often go with

  872. is can you give up

  873. a coffee a week

  874. to help someone in need?

  875. Maybe even a coffee

  876. a month,

  877. given the way things

  878. are going at the moment

  879. in terms of inflation.

  880. We can go deeper

  881. than that.

  882. Do we need

  883. as many Amazon packages

  884. or takeaways

  885. or streaming services

  886. or games

  887. or cameras

  888. or the newest laptop,

  889. the best phone,

  890. the latest app

  891. on our phone

  892. that costs

  893. just a little bit extra?

  894. Do we need

  895. another trip abroad?

  896. Do we need

  897. another set of clothes?

  898. Do we need

  899. a newer car?

  900. Do we need

  901. a more

  902. upper-middle-class

  903. lifestyle?

  904. Because we know

  905. that this is going

  906. to pass away.

  907. We may not have

  908. property to sell now,

  909. but we have

  910. extraordinary levels

  911. of wealth

  912. that previous generations,

  913. including those

  914. in this text,

  915. could only have

  916. dreamt of.

  917. And I ask myself

  918. these questions too.

  919. And please,

  920. if you see the love

  921. of wealth

  922. in my life,

  923. please do me a favor

  924. and point out

  925. the giant plank

  926. in my eye.

  927. And yet,

  928. as we ask these questions,

  929. I'm also aware

  930. that this is low-hanging fruit.

  931. It's easy to pick.

  932. But let's consider it more.

  933. Let's think about it.

  934. What more can we do

  935. here and around the world?

  936. What more can we do

  937. individually?

  938. And what more can we do

  939. as a church?

  940. I do mean that.

  941. Let's think about it.

  942. Let's chat about it

  943. after the service

  944. before we leave.

  945. Let's plan.

  946. Let's make sure

  947. it gets beyond

  948. the level of thoughts

  949. and feelings

  950. and gets into action.

  951. Let's do something.

  952. I'm going to move on

  953. now shortly

  954. in the passage,

  955. and trust me,

  956. I won't be spending

  957. anywhere near as long

  958. on the rest of the text

  959. as they're in those

  960. first few verses

  961. because that's established

  962. the foundation

  963. and the rest

  964. is basically one example.

  965. But before I do move on,

  966. please take a note.

  967. I don't mind if it's like

  968. a strong mental note

  969. or a physical one

  970. and a pen and paper

  971. or a note in a phone

  972. with a reminder set on it,

  973. but let's not forget.

  974. It can be so dangerous

  975. to forget.

  976. As Paul writes

  977. in 1 Timothy 6,

  978. he says,

  979. if we have food

  980. and clothing,

  981. we will be content

  982. with that.

  983. Is that us?

  984. He goes on,

  985. those who want

  986. to get rich

  987. fall into temptation

  988. and a trap

  989. and into many foolish

  990. and harmful desires

  991. that plunge people

  992. into ruin

  993. and destruction.

  994. For the love of money

  995. is a root

  996. of all kinds of evil.

  997. Some people,

  998. eager for money,

  999. have wandered

  1000. from the faith

  1001. and pierced themselves

  1002. with many griefs.

  1003. It's not written down

  1004. in my notes here,

  1005. but the passages

1006. have just come to me.

  1007. There's a part,

  1008. I think it's in Mark's gospel,

1009. where a rich young man

  1010. comes to Jesus

  1011. and he asks,

  1012. good teacher,

  1013. what must I do

  1014. to inherit eternal life?

  1015. And they run down

1016. through a list of laws

  1017. and requirements

  1018. and eventually

1019. they get to the end

  1020. of it

  1021. and the guy says,

  1022. look,

  1023. I've kept all these

  1024. since I was a boy.

  1025. It says,

  1026. Jesus looked at him

  1027. and loved him

  1028. but said,

  1029. one thing you lack,

  1030. go sell everything

  1031. you have,

  1032. give to the poor

  1033. and you'll have treasure

  1034. in heaven,

  1035. then come follow me.

  1036. And it says

  1037. that rich young man

  1038. went away sad

  1039. because he had

  1040. great wealth,

  1041. wasn't willing

  1042. to give it up.

  1043. let's not wander away

  1044. for love of money

  1045. as we also see

  1046. later in this passage.

  1047. In verses 36 and 37

  1048. we have one example

1049. basically of what's been said

  1050. in the previous verses.

1051. We have a guy called Joseph

  1052. who's a Levite,

1053. the apostles call him Barnabas

1054. which means son of encouragement,

  1055. he sells a field,

  1056. he brings the money

  1057. to the apostles,

  1058. they distribute it.

  1059. Now,

1060. if some of you know

  1061. Matthew 6 well,

  1062. you might wonder

  1063. if this is okay.

  1064. Because Matthew 6

    Matthew 6:3

  1065. verses 3 and 4

1066. says that when you give

  1067. to the needy,

  1068. incidentally,

  1069. when,

  1070. not if,

  1071. when you give

  1072. to the needy,

1073. do not let your left hand

1074. know what your right hand

  1075. is doing

  1076. so that your giving

  1077. may be in secret.

  1078. And people clearly know

  1079. that Barnabas

1080. has given this money here.

  1081. So it doesn't seem

  1082. to meet the requirements

1083. on the face of it.

  1084. But Matthew 6

  1085. is more about

  1086. whether the giving

  1087. is done in public

1088. to be honoured by others

1089. as it says in verse 2

  1090. of that chapter.

  1091. It doesn't look like

  1092. Barnabas

  1093. fails this test.

  1094. But for us,

  1095. if we're giving,

  1096. if we're supporting,

  1097. the best way,

  1098. the safest way

  1099. to be sure

  1100. that we're not

  1101. doing this

  1102. to be honoured

  1103. by others

  1104. is to do it

  1105. in secret.

1106. That way we can be

  1107. sure of our motivations.

  1108. Having said that,

1109. I just want to take a moment

  1110. to talk about

  1111. one specific Irish example,

  1112. particularly for anyone

  1113. who's earning money

  1114. here and paying taxes.

  1115. In Ireland,

  1116. if you're a taxpayer

  1117. and you give

  1118. more than €250

  1119. a year

  1120. or more than €21

  1121. a month

  1122. to a charity,

  1123. they can claim

  1124. almost 45%

  1125. of that back

  1126. from the government.

1127. And all you have to do

1128. is sign a very simple

  1129. basic form.

1130. I think people get worried

  1131. whenever you talk about

  1132. taxes and forms

  1133. and, oh,

1134. this is going to be difficult.

  1135. It's literally,

1136. what is your PPS number?

1137. Do you want this charity

1138. to be able to reclaim

  1139. the money?

  1140. Tick.

  1141. Sign your name.

  1142. Date it.

  1143. Send it off.

  1144. And that gets

  1145. whatever charity

  1146. you're given to,

  1147. whether it's this church

  1148. or any other,

1149. it gets them an extra

  1150. roughly 45%

  1151. from the government.

  1152. So just something

  1153. to think about

1154. when it comes to mind there.

1155. But if we go back

  1156. to Barnabas here,

  1157. it is clear

  1158. that his example

  1159. acts as a really

  1160. marked contrast

  1161. to what Ananias

  1162. and Sapphira do next.

  1163. They sell a plot

  1164. of land,

  1165. we're told in verse 2

  1166. of chapter 5,

  1167. and they keep

1168. back some of the money.

  1169. Now, interestingly,

  1170. keeping back some

  1171. of the money

  1172. doesn't seem to be

  1173. a problem here.

  1174. It doesn't seem

  1175. to be the problem.

1176. So much is the fact

  1177. that they're saying

  1178. and implying

1179. that they're not doing that.

  1180. So they're saying

  1181. or implying

  1182. that they're handing

  1183. over the full sum.

  1184. And we get that

  1185. from what Peter says

  1186. in verse 4.

  1187. He's berating Ananias.

  1188. He says,

  1189. didn't it,

  1190. didn't the piece

  1191. of property

  1192. belong to you

  1193. before it was sold?

1194. And after it was sold,

  1195. wasn't the money

  1196. at your disposal?

  1197. What made you think

1198. of doing such a thing?

  1199. You have not lied

  1200. just to human beings,

  1201. but to God.

  1202. He had the choice

1203. of what to do here.

  1204. His land was,

  1205. well,

  1206. his.

  1207. He had been granted

  1208. stewardship of it

  1209. by God,

  1210. ultimately.

1211. He could have kept it.

1212. He could have sold it

1213. and kept all the money

  1214. if he wanted to.

  1215. From what Peter

  1216. is asking here,

  1217. it doesn't look like

  1218. either of those courses

  1219. of action

  1220. would have been

  1221. wrong or sinful

  1222. for him to do.

  1223. But what is wrong

  1224. is the lie.

  1225. Verse 4.

1226. You have not just lied

  1227. to human beings,

  1228. but to God.

  1229. What is that lie?

  1230. Well,

  1231. in effect,

  1232. it's that they're giving

  1233. everything to God.

1234. We don't see that so much

  1235. when Peter is talking

  1236. with Ananias.

1237. We see it in verse 8

  1238. when he's talking

  1239. with Sapphira.

  1240. He asks,

  1241. tell me this.

  1242. Is this the price

  1243. that you and Ananias

  1244. got for the land?

1245. He clearly has the money

1246. that Ananias left with him.

  1247. He's saying,

  1248. is this the price

  1249. that you received?

  1250. And the lie

  1251. is where she says,

  1252. yes,

  1253. that is the price.

  1254. And there's a lot

1255. we don't know about this.

  1256. We don't know

  1257. how much money

  1258. or what proportion

  1259. of the money

  1260. or what proportion

  1261. of their total wealth

  1262. represented.

  1263. We don't know

  1264. why they decided

  1265. to do this.

  1266. Maybe looking back

  1267. to verse 36 and 37,

  1268. maybe they're seeing

  1269. this new name

  1270. being given to Barnabas

  1271. and maybe they want

  1272. a new name

  1273. for themselves

  1274. from the apostles.

1275. But whatever the case is,

1276. you can see the judgment here.

  1277. It's really not easy

  1278. to read.

  1279. As both of them

  1280. claim to be giving

  1281. everything to God,

  1282. they lie

1283. and they fall down dead.

  1284. The punishment is death.

  1285. And here is where

  1286. I think

  1287. we come back

  1288. to our hearts.

  1289. We saw earlier

  1290. money is an indicator

1291. of where our hearts lie.

  1292. But we see here

  1293. that our hearts' lies

  1294. will be revealed.

  1295. We can't hide stuff

  1296. from God.

  1297. This isn't just

  1298. about money.

1299. There are many other ways

  1300. in which we could

  1301. theoretically be claiming

  1302. to give everything

  1303. to God

  1304. throughout our lives.

  1305. It could be,

  1306. for example,

  1307. in church.

  1308. Maybe the reason

  1309. we volunteer

  1310. isn't exactly

1311. what it seems to be

  1312. to everyone

1313. or what we make it out to be.

  1314. Or at home,

  1315. what we think,

  1316. say and do

  1317. behind closed doors.

  1318. Maybe only select few

  1319. know about it.

  1320. Maybe even only God

  1321. knows about it.

  1322. Or it could be

  1323. when we're talking

  1324. with certain friends

  1325. or family

  1326. from years gone by.

  1327. Maybe from before

  1328. we became a Christian,

  1329. before we started

  1330. living out our faith.

  1331. We're willing to change

  1332. everything

  1333. in church

  1334. and in church

  1335. and Christian circles.

1336. We are on fire for God.

  1337. But when talking

  1338. with these people,

  1339. we can't show them

  1340. that we've changed.

  1341. They'll mock us

  1342. if we've changed.

  1343. They'll be like,

  1344. what's wrong with you?

  1345. Maybe that's us.

1346. Or maybe it's at work.

1347. Do we claim to work

1348. for the glory of God?

  1349. Have we really given

  1350. everything to Him

  1351. in that area

  1352. of our lives?

  1353. There might be

  1354. other ones

1355. that come to your head,

  1356. ways we lie,

  1357. places we say

  1358. we're giving everything

  1359. to Him

  1360. and yet we're not.

  1361. The resurrection

  1362. changes our future

  1363. and our hearts.

  1364. Money is an indicator

1365. of where our hearts lie.

  1366. One indicator,

  1367. a powerful indicator though.

  1368. And our hearts' lies

  1369. will be revealed

  1370. whatever they may be.

  1371. As I wrap up,

1372. I'd like to encourage you

  1373. again to consider

  1374. and think about

  1375. your use of

  1376. and your attitude

  1377. towards money

  1378. and possessions.

  1379. I'd encourage you again

  1380. to talk about it

  1381. after the service.

1382. Where can you use it better?

  1383. Where can we all

  1384. use it better?

1385. But far more than that

  1386. on an individual level,

  1387. can I encourage you,

  1388. don't lie to God.

1389. Your lies will be found out.

1390. As the Apostle John writes,

1391. if we claim to be

  1392. without sin,

  1393. we deceive ourselves

  1394. and the truth

  1395. is not in us.

1396. The truth is not even in us.

  1397. But we know

  1398. that if we confess

  1399. our sins,

  1400. He is faithful

  1401. and just

  1402. to forgive us

  1403. our sins

  1404. and to purify us

  1405. from all unrighteousness.

  1406. So let's be honest

  1407. with God

  1408. and let's surrender

  1409. everything to Him.

  1410. Let's pray.

  1411. Heavenly Father,

  1412. we thank You

  1413. for the resurrection.

  1414. We thank You

  1415. for this foundation

  1416. to our hope.

  1417. We thank You

  1418. that we can see

  1419. in Jesus'

  1420. rising again

  1421. our future

  1422. being changed.

  1423. We thank You

  1424. that You

  1425. are changing

  1426. our hearts

  1427. and have changed

  1428. our hearts

1429. if we are following Christ.

  1430. And we pray

1431. that You would help us

  1432. to find those parts

  1433. of our hearts

  1434. that are not fully

  1435. given over to You.

  1436. We pray that You

  1437. would help us

  1438. in particular

  1439. to think about

  1440. how we use money

  1441. and possessions,

  1442. whether that is

  1443. honouring or glorifying

  1444. to You.

  1445. We pray that this

  1446. would lead to

  1447. concrete steps

  1448. that we have

  1449. in our lives

  1450. but Lord,

  1451. we also recognise

  1452. that money

  1453. is only an indicator

  1454. of where our hearts

  1455. lie.

  1456. We recognise

  1457. that there are

  1458. so many ways

  1459. that we lie

  1460. to ourselves

  1461. and maybe even

  1462. lie to You, Lord,

  1463. and we pray

  1464. that we would

  1465. not do that.

  1466. We pray that You

  1467. would help us

1468. to be honest with You,

  1469. to recognise

1470. the sin in our lives

1471. and to come to You

  1472. with it knowing

  1473. that You are faithful

  1474. and just

  1475. to forgive us

  1476. our sins

  1477. and cleanse us

  1478. from all unrighteousness.

  1479. Father,

  1480. we praise You

  1481. for what You

  1482. have done.

  1483. We praise You

  1484. for what Christ

  1485. has done

  1486. and we praise You

  1487. for what the Spirit

  1488. will do

  1489. in our lives.

  1490. As it's in Jesus'

  1491. precious name

  1492. we pray.

  1493. Amen.

  1494. Amen.

  1495. Amen.

  1496. Amen.

  1497. Amen.

  1498. Amen.

  1499. Amen.
