  11. We're going to read Revelation chapter 6 this morning.

    Revelation 6 chapter mention

  12. Let's read God's word together.

  13. I watched as the lamb opened the first of seven seals.

  14. Then I heard one of the four living creatures say in a voice like a thunder,

  15. Come!

  16. I looked and there before me was a white horse.

  17. Its rider held a bow.

  18. He was given a crown and he rode out as a conquest, bent on conquest.

  19. When the lamb opened the second seal I heard the second living creature say,

  20. Come!

  21. Then another horse came out, a fiery red one.

  22. Its rider was given power to take peace from the earth and to make people kill each other.

  23. To him was given a large sword.

  24. When the lamb opened the third seal I heard the third living creature say,

  25. Come!

  26. I looked and there before me was a black horse.

  27. Its rider was holding a pair of scales in his hand.

  28. Then I heard what sounded like a voice among the four living creatures saying,

  29. A kilogram of wheat for a day's wages.

  30. And three kilograms of barley for a day's wages.

  31. And do not damage the oil and the wine.

  32. When the lamb opened the fourth seal I heard the voice of the fourth living creature say,

  33. Come!

  34. I looked and there before me was a pale horse.

  35. Its rider was named Death and Hades was following close behind him.

  36. They were given power over a quarter of the earth to kill by sword, famine and plague,

  37. and by the wild beasts of the earth.

  38. When he opened the fifth seal I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slain

  39. because of the word of God and the testimony they had maintained.

  40. They called out in a loud voice,

  41. How long, sovereign Lord, holy and true, until you judge the inhabitants of the earth and avenge our blood?

  42. Then each of them was given a white robe and they were told to wait a little while longer

  43. until a full number of their fellow servants, their brothers and sisters were killed just as they had been.

  44. I watched as he opened the sixth seal.

  45. There was a great earthquake.

  46. The sun turned black with sackcloth made of goat hair.

  47. The whole moon turned blood red and the stars of the sky fell to the earth

  48. as figs dropped from the fig tree when shaken by a strong wind.

  49. The heavens receded like a scroll being rolled up

  50. and every mountain and island was removed from its place.

  51. Then the kings of the earth, the princes, the generals, the rich, the mighty and everyone else,

  52. both free and slave, hid in caves and among the rocks of the mountains.

  53. They called to the mountains and the rocks,

  54. Fall on us and hide us from the face of him who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb.

  55. For the great day of their wrath has come.

  56. And who can withstand it?

  57. Well, I'm going to ask you to stand as we pray.

  58. So you can stand as we pray.

  59. If you're able to, if you don't want to stand, that's alright.

  60. It's also a physical exercise.

  61. Get some blood into the legs.

  62. Let's pray.

  63. Let's pray.

  64. Our Father God, we ask that you would help us now as we read your word,

  65. as we study it together.

  66. That you would speak to us by your spirit.

  67. and that you would change us and work in us, we pray.

  68. In Jesus' name.

  69. Amen.

  70. Please take your seats.

  71. It's been a very sad and difficult week for our nation.

  72. As the community of Creslo have been grieving,

  73. as we have turned on our televisions and watched funeral after funeral,

  74. we see the heartache and we witness the emptiness.

  75. But as the dust settles, questions begin to arise.

  76. Where is God in all of this?

  77. And I think it's a question that we all ask as we face our own personal struggles and suffering.

  78. It could be an illness.

  79. It could be a disappointment.

  80. It could be a broken dream.

  81. And we ask, where is God?

  82. Why is God allowing this?

  83. What is God doing?

  84. Well, chapter 6 might not answer our every question,

  85. but it will help us to see life from God's perspective.

  86. Remember, have a look back at chapter 4, verse 1.

  87. John is given his second vision.

  88. He says, after this, after the first vision, I looked,

  89. and there before me was a door standing open in heaven

  90. so we can imagine him looking up and a door opens before him.

  91. And the voice I had first heard speaking to me like a trumpet said,

  92. come up here, come up into heaven, and I will show you what must take place after this.

  93. You see, we've been invited with John to go through the door into the throne room of heaven.

  94. And as we enter, we get to see life from God's perspective.

  95. But that's not all. Look at chapter 5, verse 1.

  96. As he is in heaven, he says, I saw in the right hand of him who sat on the throne.

  97. So God is seated on the throne, and he has a scroll with writing on both sides, sealed with seven seals.

  98. What's written on the throne?

  99. Well, it's God's purposes and plans for history in the world,

  100. from the resurrection of Christ to the return of Christ.

  101. As that seal is opened, so we will begin to see what is God's plan,

  102. what is God's purposes for the world as they are laid before us.

  103. So we're going to look at the first six seals this morning.

  104. And as we open them, we will see what we can expect to happen.

  105. First, there will be times of suffering.

  106. As the first four seals are opened, we see four horsemen being unleashed on the earth with devastating effects.

  107. But before we see what they do, we need to ask, who are these four horsemen?

  108. Well, at some level, they seem to represent the powers and authorities of this world.

  109. So we come to them in verse 15, where it talks about the kings of the earth, the princes, the generals, the rich and the mighty.

  110. But as we read through chapter 6, we see there's something darker and more sinister.

  111. Behind the evil actions of the powers and authorities of this world is the work of Satan, whose purpose is to bring death and destruction.

  112. So as these four horsemen are unleashed upon the world, we see the rulers carrying out the sinister intentions of Satan and his minions.

  113. So what can we expect to happen?

  114. Well, there's four things that we see here as we study the first four horsemen.

  115. First, there will be military conquest.

  116. Look at verse 2.

  117. I looked and there before me was a white horse.

  118. Its rider held a bow.

  119. This is a weapon of war.

  120. And he was given a crown, so he has a certain amount of authority.

  121. And he rode out as a conqueror, bent on conquest.

  122. Now that's familiar, isn't it?

  123. Because right now there are wars and conflicts all over the world as rulers expand their borders.

  124. We see it in Yemen, in Syria, Ethiopia, Central Africa, Kashmir, Myanmar, and of course the daily reminder of the war in Ukraine.

  125. In fact, right now there are over 490 separate wars going on in the world right now.

  126. But not only will there be military conquest.

  127. We're told there will be violent bloodshed.

  128. Look at verse 4.

  129. Then another horse came out.

  130. A fiery red one.

  131. Its rider was given power to take peace from the earth and to make people kill each other.

  132. To him was given a large sword.

  133. Again, our news is filled, isn't it, with stabbings, shootings, domestic abuse and violent crime.

  134. Whether it's the slaughter of innocent children in the creche in Thailand.

  135. Or a mindless murder at that funeral in Tralee.

  136. Gangs on the street.

  137. Or the wealthy suburbs.

  138. It doesn't matter where we look.

  139. People kill each other.

  140. They take each other's life.

  141. But it's not just military conquest and violent bloodshed.

  142. We see economic injustice.

  143. Look at verse 5.

  144. I looked and there before me was a black horse.

  145. Its rider was holding a pair of scales.

  146. This is a weighing scales in his hand.

  147. And I heard what sounded like a voice among the four living creatures saying,

  148. A kilogram of wheat for a day's wages.

  149. And three kilograms of barley for a day's wages.

  150. And do not damage the oil and the wine.

  151. It's scarce.

  152. We must be careful with what we have.

  153. This is a picture of extortion and inflation gone mad.

  154. A kilogram of wheat would have fed one person.

  155. Yet it would cost a day's wage.

  156. So how were people meant to feed their whole family on a day's wage?

  157. But again, that's nothing new for the majority of the world's population today.

  158. The cost of living crisis is nothing new.

  159. What they earn today in the majority of many countries is not enough to feed themselves adequately.

  160. It's the effects of economic injustice as the rich get richer and the poor get poorer.

  161. We get military conquest, violent bloodshed, economic injustice,

  162. and then fourth as we look at the last rider, relentless death.

  163. Look at verse 8.

  164. I looked and there before me was a pale horse.

  165. Its rider was named Death and Hades.

  166. That's the place of the dead.

  167. And he was following close behind him.

  168. They were given power over a quarter of the earth to kill by sword, famine and plague,

  169. and by the wild beasts of the earth.

  170. Now we know death comes to all.

  171. And it is very rarely quick and painless.

  172. Tragically, death comes through disasters like floods and famine, sickness and plagues,

  173. through the attacks of men and at times through the attacks of wild animals.

  174. The point is, we can't avoid death.

  175. And mostly it comes with great suffering.

  176. The scene before us is devastating and horrific.

  177. And we don't have to go looking into the future for these things to happen.

  178. They have happened.

  179. They are happening.

  180. And they will happen.

  181. In fact, as we continue to read through Revelation,

  182. we will see that things only escalate and get worse.

  183. This is what life is like.

  184. This side of the return of Jesus.

  185. It's what John and his readers experienced in the first century

  186. as the Roman Empire went on their military conquests,

  187. inflicting violent bloodshed, causing imminent economic injustice

  188. and leaving countless dead.

  189. It's what we've seen in recent history.

  190. The war in the Balkans, invasion of Iraq, genocide in Syria.

  191. Thousands, millions have been slaughtered

  192. while others face starvation through failed crops and droughts.

  193. These are times of suffering, aren't they?

  194. But let's be clear.

  195. This is not evil unrestrained or Satan uncontrolled.

  196. Now we've got to remember, where does this vision take place?

  197. In the throne room of heaven, where God is in control of all things,

  198. even the powers of darkness.

  199. You see, Satan is controlled.

  200. Satan is controlled.

  201. Look who gives permission for these things to take place.

  202. Who is it that's breaking open the seals to let this take place?

  203. Did you see it? Verse 1.

  204. I watched as who?

  205. The Lamb.

  206. That's the Lord Jesus, who opens the first of the seven seals.

  207. Verse 3, the Lamb opened the second seal.

  208. Verse 5, the Lamb opened the third seal.

  209. Verse 7, the Lamb opened the fourth seal.

  210. The order comes from the throne room of heaven.

  211. You see, Satan is not acting at will.

  212. He is under God's supreme control.

  213. It's God who lets Satan loose.

  214. It's God who moves.

  215. But this is not uncontrolled chaos.

  216. Evil.

  217. Evil is restrained.

  218. Look at verse 4.

  219. Then another horse came out, a fiery red one.

  220. its rider was given power.

  221. Did you see that?

  222. The rider was given power.

  223. It doesn't have its own power.

  224. It was given power to take peace from the earth.

  225. Power, but it's restrained.

  226. Again, look at verse 8.

  227. The middle of verse 8.

  228. They were given power over a quarter of the earth

  229. to kill by sword, famine and plague.

  230. You see, it's restrained.

  231. It's just to a quarter of the earth.

  232. Now, this isn't just to say to take that

  233. literally just a quarter, 25% and that's it.

  234. No, it's saying you can go this far and no further.

  235. There are boundaries you will not cross.

  236. You see, we need to be clear that God alone

  237. rules over the powers of darkness.

  238. Satan may be intent on causing evil,

  239. but he remains on a leash.

  240. He cannot do what he wants or pleases.

  241. So if God is in control of these times of suffering,

  242. then why doesn't he make it all stop?

  243. Isn't that the question?

  244. If he's in control of it all,

  245. why doesn't he pull the leash

  246. and restrain Satan that little bit more

  247. and put him back in his cage?

  248. Why?

  249. Well, that brings us to the second big idea.

  250. Not only is there times of suffering,

  251. there will be cries of longing.

  252. Because it seems that these times that we live in

  253. will be doubly hard for Christians.

  254. Not only will we face the suffering inflicted by man,

  255. but Christians will also endure times of opposition

  256. and persecution.

  257. Look at verse 9.

  258. Verse 9.

  259. When he opened the fifth seal,

  260. I saw under the altar

  261. the souls of those who had been slain

  262. because of the word of God

  263. and the testimony they had maintained.

  264. Just as the lamb had been slain,

  265. so the followers of Jesus will be slain.

  266. Remember Jesus' words to his disciples,

  267. if they persecuted me,

  268. they will also persecute you.

  269. You see, the world and Satan

  270. are actively opposed to Christ and his church.

  271. That was the experience of the churches

  272. that John wrote to.

  273. Have a look back at chapter 2, verse 10.

  274. Chapter 2, verse 10.

  275. Chapter 2, verse 10.

  276. Do not be afraid of what you are about to suffer.

  277. This is written to God's church.

  278. I tell you, the devil will put some of you in prison

  279. to test you

  280. and you will suffer persecution for 10 days.

  281. Now again, I think it's saying

  282. this is for a specific time

  283. and no more.

  284. Be faithful even to the point of death

  285. and I will give you life

  286. as your victor's crown.

  287. A crown awaits for the Christian

  288. but in the meantime,

  289. be prepared for prison

  290. and possibly death.

  291. Look at chapter 2, verse 13.

  292. I know where you live.

  293. I know where you live.

  294. And Satan has his throne there.

  295. Yet you remain true to my name.

  296. You did not renounce your faith in me,

  297. not even in the days of Antipas.

  298. Well, who's Antipas?

  299. Well, he was just a faithful brother,

  300. a faithful Christian.

  301. My faithful witness

  302. who was put to death in your city

  303. where Satan lives.

  304. You see, where the church is,

  305. whether that's in Carigoline or Jelan,

  306. Satan is also there

  307. and he is intent on destroying

  308. and breaking up his church,

  309. God's church.

  310. So it shouldn't be a surprise

  311. that Christians

  312. will be opposed

  313. and will die.

  314. Go back to chapter 6, verse 9.

  315. The reason why we will face opposition

  316. and persecution

  317. is because,

  318. end of verse 9,

  319. because of the word of God

  320. and the testimony

  321. they had maintained.

  322. Now, as we go through

  323. our times of suffering,

  324. we can identify

  325. with their cry.

  326. Look at verse 10.

  327. They all cried out

  328. in a loud voice,

  329. How long,

  330. sovereign Lord,

  331. holy and true?

  332. How long

  333. will this suffering

  334. go on for?

  335. How long

  336. must we put up

  337. with this brutal war

  338. in Ukraine?

  339. How long

  340. must we have to hear

  341. of yet another

  342. violent murder?

  343. How long

  344. must we watch

  345. as children

  346. become victims

  347. of poverty?

  348. How long

  349. must we have to see

  350. so many loved ones

  351. die painfully?

  352. We understand

  353. verse 10,

  354. don't we?

  355. They called out,

  356. How long,

  357. sovereign Lord,

  358. holy and true,

  359. until you judge

  360. the inhabitants

  361. of the earth

  362. and avenge our blood.

  363. When will justice

  364. be done?

  365. When will all

  366. those intent

  367. on doing evil

  368. be held accountable?

  369. When will

  370. the wealthy corrupt

  371. be treated

  372. as they deserve?

  373. When are the

  374. Christians

  375. in North Korea

  376. going to be

  377. released from

  378. their suffering

  379. in prison?

  380. When will the

  381. pastors and

  382. churches

  383. in Mali

  384. and Egypt

  385. stop being

  386. attacked?

  387. When will

  388. the young

  389. women,

  390. disciples in

  391. Afghanistan

  392. stop being

  393. raped?

  394. When will

  395. the 5,898

  396. Christians

  397. who died

  398. for their faith

  399. last year,

  400. when are they

  401. going to get

  402. justice?

  403. justice?

  404. And when will

  405. the 3,829

  406. followers of

  407. Jesus who

  408. were abducted

  409. and trafficked

  410. to other

  411. countries,

  412. when will

  413. they get

  414. justice?

  415. When is

  416. God going to

  417. haul Satan

  418. in and end

  419. all this

  420. evil?

  421. how long

  422. will this

  423. suffering go

  424. on for?

  425. How long

  426. sovereign

  427. Lord?

  428. How long?

  429. How long?

  430. Well, God

  431. does answer

  432. our cry

  433. and it's

  434. both a

  435. comfort

  436. and a

  437. challenge.

  438. Look where

  439. these faithful

  440. saints are

  441. as they

  442. cry out.

  443. Did you

  444. see where

  445. they were?

  446. Verse 9.

  447. When he

  448. opened the

  449. fifth seal,

  450. I saw

  451. under the

  452. altar the

  453. souls of

  454. those who

  455. had been

  456. slain.

  457. It's

  458. temple

  459. language.

  460. It's

  461. talking about

  462. the new

  463. temple and

  464. the new

  465. heavens.

  466. They're

  467. present in

  468. heaven.

  469. And look

  470. what God

  471. does.

  472. Verse 11.

  473. Each of

  474. them was

  475. given a

  476. white robe.

  477. John has

  478. already spoken

  479. about these

  480. white robes.

  481. Just go

  482. back to

  483. chapter 3

  484. verse 4.

  485. As he

  486. writes to

  487. the church,

  488. as he

  489. talks about

  490. these people,

  491. he says,

  492. you have a

  493. few people

  494. in Sardis

  495. who have

  496. not spoiled

  497. their clothes.

  498. That is,

  499. they have

  500. not turned

  501. from God,

  502. but they

  503. have remained

  504. faithful.

  505. They will

  506. walk with

  507. me,

  508. dressed in

  509. white,

  510. for they

  511. are worthy.

  512. The one

  513. who is

  514. victorious

  515. will,

  516. like them,

  517. be dressed

  518. in white.

  519. And I

  520. will never

  521. blot out the

  522. name of that

  523. person from

  524. the book

  525. of life,

  526. but will

  527. acknowledge

  528. that name

  529. before my

  530. father and

  531. his angels.

  532. We can

  533. picture it

  534. there.

  535. These saints

  536. who have

  537. been put to

  538. death because

  539. of their

  540. testimony of

  541. Christ are

  542. given a

  543. white robe

  544. to wear,

  545. a sign of

  546. their victory

  547. presented by

  548. Jesus.

  549. Their names

  550. forever in

  551. the book of

  552. life,

  553. never to be

  554. erased or

  555. taken away.

  556. How long

  557. they cry

  558. to God,

  559. how long

  560. will this

  561. suffering go

  562. on for?

  563. We don't

  564. know,

  565. but as we

  566. wait,

  567. we keep

  568. pressing on

  569. because our

  570. reward awaits

  571. us.

  572. Our white

  573. robe will be

  574. given,

  575. and our

  576. names will

  577. be forever

  578. in the

  579. book of

  580. life.

  581. But there's

  582. also a

  583. challenge as

  584. well as a

  585. comfort.

  586. Not getting

  587. on great

  588. with our

  589. flicker today.

  590. The

  591. challenge of

  592. suffering,

  593. because there

  594. is a challenge,

  595. isn't there?

  596. Look at verse

  597. 10.

  598. They call

  599. out in a

  600. loud voice,

  601. How long,

  602. sovereign

  603. Lord,

  604. holy and

  605. true,

  606. until you

  607. had judged

  608. the inhabitants

  609. of the earth

  610. and avenged

  611. our blood?

  612. Then each

  613. of them was

  614. given a

  615. white robe,

  616. and they

  617. were told

  618. to wait

  619. a little

  620. longer,

  621. until the

  622. full number

  623. of their

  624. fellow servants,

  625. their brothers

  626. and sisters,

  627. were killed,

  628. just as they

  629. had been.

  630. the time

  631. for it all

  632. to end

  633. is not

  634. yet.

  635. Not

  636. until Christ

  637. returns.

  638. The full

  639. number of

  640. those who

  641. will die

  642. for their

  643. faith

  644. is not

  645. yet

  646. complete.

  647. We must

  648. wait a

  649. little longer.

  650. Yes,

  651. God has the

  652. power and

  653. authority to

  654. intervene,

  655. as we will

  656. see in a

  657. minute,

  658. but God's

  659. plan and

  660. his purpose

  661. is,

  662. not yet.

  663. Not yet,

  664. not until

  665. Christ returns.

  666. Yes,

  667. there will

  668. be a day

  669. when the

  670. last Christian

  671. will be

  672. killed.

  673. There is

  674. going to

  675. be a day

  676. when the

  677. last Christian

  678. will suffer,

  679. and then

  680. it will be

  681. all over.

  682. But that

  683. day

  684. is not

  685. yet.

  686. we must

  687. wait a

  688. little

  689. longer.

  690. Now,

  691. for those

  692. who are

  693. suffering,

  694. to say

  695. this is a

  696. challenge is

  697. an

  698. understatement.

  699. It's

  700. difficult,

  701. it's hard

  702. to understand

  703. and to

  704. accept.

  705. Why does

  706. God not

  707. intervene and

  708. act now?

  709. God is

  710. sadistic,

  711. well,

  712. if God

  713. tells us

  714. to wait a

  715. little

  716. longer,

  717. then it

  718. must mean

  719. that God

  720. has some

  721. very good

  722. reasons.

  723. It's not

  724. like God

  725. is sadistic,

  726. that he's

  727. somehow enjoying

  728. the suffering

  729. that takes

  730. place.

  731. No,

  732. God is

  733. both

  734. grieved,

  735. and yet

  736. God is

  737. in control

  738. of our

  739. future

  740. destiny.

  741. His plans

  742. and his

  743. purposes are

  744. always right,

  745. and they

  746. are best,

  747. even if we

  748. do not

  749. always

  750. understand

  751. them.

  752. So,

  753. there will

  754. be times

  755. of suffering,

  756. there will

  757. be cries

  758. of longing,

  759. and there

  760. will be a

  761. day of

  762. wrath.

  763. look at

  764. verse 12.

  765. I

  766. watched as

  767. he opened

  768. the sixth

  769. seal,

  770. and there

  771. was a

  772. great

  773. earthquake.

  774. The sun

  775. turned black

  776. like sackcloth

  777. made of goat

  778. hair.

  779. I don't

  780. think any

  781. of us

  782. have any

  783. of that

  784. lying around

  785. the place,

  786. but so

  787. knitted

  788. together so

  789. tight that

  790. the light

  791. can't

  792. penetrate

  793. through it.

  794. The whole

  795. moon

  796. turned

  797. blood

  798. red.

  799. The stars

  800. in the

  801. sky

  802. fell to

  803. earth as

  804. figs

  805. drop from

  806. a fig

  807. tree,

  808. or as we

  809. might say

  810. leaves fall

  811. from the

  812. tree as

  813. shaken by

  814. a strong

  815. wind.

  816. This is

  817. cosmic

  818. and

  819. cataclysmic.

  820. The sun,

  821. moon,

  822. and stars

  823. once spoken

  824. into being

  825. by God

  826. and held

  827. in place

  828. by God

  829. are thrown

  830. into chaos.

  831. This is

  832. a universal

  833. upheaval,

  834. a sign

  835. that judgment

  836. has come.

  837. Of course,

  838. it's not the

  839. first time

  840. the sun

  841. turned black.

  842. Remember

  843. when God

  844. brought his

  845. judgment

  846. against Pharaoh

  847. and the

  848. Egyptians?

  849. He did it

  850. through a

  851. plague of

  852. darkness.

  853. For three

  854. whole days

  855. there was

  856. total darkness.

  857. You couldn't

  858. see a thing.

  859. So when God

  860. tells us that

  861. the sun

  862. will turn

  863. to darkness,

  864. us,

  865. we know

  866. that judgment

  867. has come.

  868. The day

  869. of waiting

  870. will be

  871. over.

  872. The day

  873. of justice

  874. has arrived

  875. and it

  876. will be

  877. terrifying.

  878. Verse 15.

  879. The kings

  880. of the earth,

  881. the princes,

  882. the generals,

  883. the rich,

  884. the mighty,

  885. the leaders

  886. of our

  887. nations

  888. and everyone

  889. else,

  890. both slave

  891. and free,

  892. hid in caves

  893. and among

  894. the rocks

  895. and the

  896. mountains.

  897. They call

  898. to the

  899. mountains

  900. and the

  901. rocks,

  902. fall on

  903. us and

  904. hide us

  905. from the

  906. face of

  907. him who

  908. sits on

  909. the throne

  910. and from

  911. the wrath

  912. of the

  913. lamb.

  914. The slain

  915. lamb

  916. is also

  917. God's

  918. ruling

  919. judge.

  920. Remember

  921. what he

  922. was like?

  923. The description

  924. we were given

  925. of the lamb

  926. in chapter 5

  927. verse 6.

  928. The lamb

  929. had what?

  930. seven horns,

  931. a symbol

  932. of his

  933. power,

  934. seven eyes

  935. because he

  936. could see

  937. all things,

  938. which were

  939. the seven

  940. spirits

  941. gone into

  942. all the

  943. earth because

  944. the lamb,

  945. the Lord

  946. Jesus,

  947. sees and

  948. he knows

  949. all the

  950. suffering.

  951. He has

  952. heard the

  953. cry of

  954. all his

  955. people.

  956. He knows

  957. the injustice

  958. that has

  959. been endured.

  960. He has

  961. seen the

  962. military

  963. conquests,

  964. the violent

  965. bloodshed,

  966. the economic

  967. injustice,

  968. the relentless

  969. death.

  970. He has

  971. witnessed

  972. the suffering

  973. of his

  974. people,

  975. every single

  976. one.

  977. And so a

  978. day will

  979. come when

  980. the waiting

  981. will be

  982. over.

  983. Evil and

  984. Satan will

  985. be reeled

  986. in once

  987. and for

  988. all.

  989. God's

  990. judgment

  991. will be

  992. unleashed

  993. and there

  994. will be

  995. no one

  996. to hold

  997. it back.

  998. no wonder

  999. there is

  1000. fear and

  1001. panic.

  1002. Look at

  1003. verse 17.

  1004. For the

  1005. great day

  1006. of their

  1007. wrath has

  1008. come and

  1009. who can

  1010. withstand

  1011. it?

  1012. You see

  1013. God will

  1014. have the

  1015. last word.

  1016. God's

  1017. will in

  1018. heaven will

  1019. be done

  1020. on earth.

  1021. He rules

  1022. over all

  1023. things and

  1024. all people

  1025. and he

  1026. will bring

  1027. his

  1028. justice.

  1029. But we're

  1030. still left

  1031. with the

  1032. big question

  1033. aren't we?

  1034. Why

  1035. doesn't he

  1036. come now?

  1037. Well he

  1038. could,

  1039. I get

  1040. that,

  1041. I understand

  1042. that.

  1043. But why

  1044. doesn't he

  1045. come right

  1046. now?

  1047. Why doesn't

  1048. God bring

  1049. an end to

  1050. all the

  1051. suffering and

  1052. injustice and

  1053. all the

  1054. heartache?

  1055. Why doesn't

  1056. he just end

  1057. it now?

  1058. And maybe

  1059. that's the

  1060. cry of your

  1061. heart and

  1062. you're asking

  1063. why doesn't

  1064. God end

  1065. my suffering

  1066. now,

  1067. today?

  1068. Well I'm

  1069. not going to

  1070. pretend to

  1071. have all the

  1072. answers or

  1073. reasons.

  1074. But I

  1075. think this

  1076. text points

  1077. to two

  1078. things that

  1079. might help

  1080. us.

  1081. First,

  1082. there is a

  1083. warning of

  1084. judgment.

  1085. You see,

  1086. these times

  1087. of suffering

  1088. that we're

  1089. looking at

  1090. are signs

  1091. of a greater

  1092. suffering that

  1093. is to come.

  1094. They're warnings

  1095. of the

  1096. ultimate judgment

  1097. that will

  1098. fall.

  1099. The wars,

  1100. the violence,

  1101. the injustice,

  1102. the relentless

  1103. death that

  1104. screams at us

  1105. through our

  1106. television and

  1107. social media

  1108. every single

  1109. day should

  1110. waken us up

  1111. to the reality

  1112. that one day

  1113. God is going

  1114. to come in

  1115. justice.

  1116. But not

  1117. yet.

  1118. He's

  1119. patient.

  1120. He's giving

  1121. us time.

  1122. Bible is

  1123. very clear to

  1124. tell us that

  1125. he longs that

  1126. none would

  1127. perish and

  1128. that none

  1129. would have to

  1130. face his

  1131. judgment.

  1132. He longs that

  1133. all would

  1134. turn to

  1135. him.

  1136. You see,

  1137. if God did

  1138. what we

  1139. asked right

  1140. now,

  1141. if God

  1142. answered my

  1143. prayer and

  1144. say,

  1145. Lord,

  1146. come right

  1147. now and

  1148. stop all

  1149. the suffering,

  1150. then that

  1151. would be it,

  1152. wouldn't it?

  1153. His justice

  1154. would fall

  1155. and there

  1156. would be no

  1157. opportunity to

  1158. turn and

  1159. repent.

  1160. Our

  1161. friends,

  1162. our neighbours,

  1163. our loved

  1164. ones,

  1165. time would

  1166. be up.

  1167. They would

  1168. be like

  1169. those of

  1170. verse 16.

  1171. calling to

  1172. the mountains

  1173. and the

  1174. rocks to

  1175. fall on

  1176. us.

  1177. They'd

  1178. rather suffer

  1179. death like

  1180. that than

  1181. face God's

  1182. judgment.

  1183. So in

  1184. God's mercy

  1185. he says,

  1186. no,

  1187. wait a

  1188. little longer.

  1189. Be

  1190. patient.

  1191. The day

  1192. will come,

  1193. but not

  1194. yet.

  1195. I have

  1196. many,

  1197. many more

  1198. to bring

  1199. into my

  1200. kingdom.

  1201. so there

  1202. is a

  1203. warning,

  1204. but there's

  1205. also a

  1206. promise.

  1207. You see,

  1208. these times

  1209. of suffering

  1210. also point

  1211. to times

  1212. of salvation

  1213. because it

  1214. is through

  1215. suffering

  1216. that salvation

  1217. ultimately

  1218. comes.

  1219. I mean,

  1220. let's think

  1221. about this

  1222. together.

  1223. As Jesus

  1224. died on

  1225. the cross,

  1226. what do

  1227. we see

  1228. happening?

  1229. The forces

  1230. of evil

  1231. and Satan

  1232. are unleashed.

  1233. Together

  1234. they march

  1235. in military

  1236. conquest

  1237. seeking to

  1238. destroy the

  1239. Son of

  1240. God.

  1241. They act

  1242. with violent

  1243. bloodshed

  1244. as Christ

  1245. is crucified

  1246. and crushed

  1247. with a

  1248. crown of

  1249. thorns.

  1250. Weak and

  1251. poor,

  1252. Jesus goes

  1253. to the

  1254. cross

  1255. suffering

  1256. abuse

  1257. and

  1258. injustice.

  1259. He's

  1260. innocent.

  1261. And from

  1262. the cross

  1263. he cries

  1264. out,

  1265. how long

  1266. sovereign

  1267. Lord,

  1268. why have

  1269. you forsaken

  1270. me?

  1271. And from

  1272. the cross

  1273. there is

  1274. silence.

  1275. There is

  1276. no answer.

  1277. Death's

  1278. relentless

  1279. call takes

  1280. over and

  1281. Jesus dies.

  1282. But this

  1283. is not

  1284. uncontrolled.

  1285. This is not

  1286. unrestrained.

  1287. This was

  1288. meant to

  1289. be.

  1290. This was

  1291. God's will.

  1292. This was

  1293. God's plan

  1294. and purpose.

  1295. it's all

  1296. being unfolded

  1297. for our

  1298. good.

  1299. Because what

  1300. do we see

  1301. as Jesus

  1302. is on

  1303. the cross?

  1304. What

  1305. happened to

  1306. the sun?

  1307. It turned

  1308. dark.

  1309. From

  1310. twelve noon

  1311. until three

  1312. p.m.

  1313. when the

  1314. sun is at

  1315. its highest

  1316. and brightest,

  1317. the world

  1318. was plunged

  1319. into darkness

  1320. as the

  1321. judgment of

  1322. God was

  1323. poured out

  1324. on Jesus

  1325. Christ for

  1326. you and

  1327. for me.

  1328. The judgment

  1329. that we

  1330. deserve

  1331. fell on

  1332. him.

  1333. And so

  1334. as we

  1335. turn in

  1336. repentance

  1337. we are

  1338. saved,

  1339. we are

  1340. rescued.

  1341. Through

  1342. his

  1343. suffering

  1344. comes our

  1345. salvation.

  1346. Maybe if

  1347. it was us

  1348. we'd say

  1349. no,

  1350. intervene,

  1351. take Christ

  1352. down from

  1353. the cross.

  1354. But there

  1355. would be no

  1356. salvation.

  1357. You see

  1358. there is

  1359. purpose

  1360. in the

  1361. suffering.

  1362. And that

  1363. means there

  1364. is purpose

  1365. in your

  1366. suffering too.

  1367. There is

  1368. purpose in

  1369. your suffering

  1370. too.

  1371. As we

  1372. look to

  1373. Christ who

  1374. suffered for

  1375. us, as

  1376. we cry

  1377. out from

  1378. our hearts

  1379. how long

  1380. oh Lord,

  1381. as we

  1382. turn in

  1383. trust to

  1384. him, as

  1385. we long

  1386. and wait

  1387. for glory

  1388. to come,

  1389. as we

  1390. wait for

  1391. the white

  1392. robe and

  1393. for victory,

  1394. as we

  1395. wait for

  1396. heaven itself,

  1397. so we

  1398. on our

  1399. journey are

  1400. causing

  1401. others to

  1402. stop and

  1403. to turn and

  1404. to look to

  1405. Jesus Christ.

  1406. They will

  1407. see in us,

  1408. in our

  1409. longing and

  1410. in our

  1411. cries,

  1412. where our

  1413. hope lies,

  1414. that our

  1415. hope lies

  1416. in Jesus

  1417. Christ,

  1418. who died

  1419. for you and

  1420. for me,

  1421. who was

  1422. raised from

  1423. the grave,

  1424. defeating

  1425. death,

  1426. to give

  1427. life to

  1428. all.

  1429. Why doesn't

  1430. God intervene

  1431. right now?

  1432. I don't know

  1433. all the

  1434. answers.

  1435. There's a

  1436. mystery and

  1437. we shouldn't

  1438. try to answer

  1439. everything.

  1440. nothing.

  1441. But it is

  1442. clear that

  1443. he is giving

  1444. the nations

  1445. and us time

  1446. to turn to

  1447. him.

  1448. There is

  1449. more to

  1450. come into

  1451. his kingdom.

  1452. And the

  1453. way in which

  1454. he will do

  1455. that is he

  1456. will use

  1457. your suffering.

  1458. As you

  1459. look to

  1460. Christ,

  1461. so others

  1462. will be

  1463. drawn to

  1464. him.

  1465. It's God's

  1466. way.

  1467. we need

  1468. to trust

  1469. him.

  1470. Let's

  1471. take time

  1472. to pray.

  1473. Let's

  1474. just take

  1475. time to

  1476. reflect.

  1477. Father, we

  1478. identify with

  1479. the cry of

  1480. your saints.

  1481. How long,

  1482. O Lord?

  1483. How long?

  1484. As we

  1485. think about

  1486. our world,

  1487. as we

  1488. think about

  1489. our own

  1490. individual

  1491. lives,

  1492. we long

  1493. for you

  1494. to intervene.

  1495. And so

  1496. we pray

  1497. that you

  1498. would give

  1499. us patience

  1500. and

  1501. perseverance

  1502. to trust

  1503. that you

  1504. are working

  1505. out your

  1506. good and

  1507. excellent plan

  1508. for us

  1509. and for

  1510. the world.

  1511. Give us

  1512. strength,

  1513. Lord,

  1514. to keep

  1515. looking to

  1516. you in

  1517. the knowledge

  1518. that heaven

  1519. is to

  1520. come

  1521. and you

  1522. will be

  1523. with us

  1524. and you

  1525. will walk

  1526. with us.

  1527. Please,

  1528. Lord,

  1529. bring many

  1530. more into

  1531. your kingdom.

  1532. Use us

  1533. to show

  1534. others

  1535. who Jesus

  1536. is.

  1537. In his name

  1538. we pray.

  1539. Amen.

  1540. We're going

  1541. to sing

  1542. together

  1543. a song

  1544. that

  1545. brings our

  1546. thoughts

  1547. together.

  1548. together.

  1549. There is

  1550. strength

  1551. within

  1552. the sorrow.

  1553. There is

  1554. beauty

  1555. in our

  1556. tears.

  1557. And when

  1558. you

  1559. meet

  1560. the

  1561. heart,

  1562. you

  1563. will be

  1564. in the

  1565. heart.

  1566. You

  1567. will be

  1568. in the

  1569. heart.

  1570. You

  1571. will be

  1572. in the

  1573. heart.

  1574. You
