  1. and talk with me. We're going to read Revelation chapter 12 this morning, chapter 12, 1, 17.

    Revelation 12 chapter mention

  2. The title we've given this talk this morning is The Dragon Slayer, so I hope all that becomes

  3. clear as we read. Revelation chapter 12, starting at verse 1.

    Revelation 12 chapter mention

  4. A great sign appeared in heaven. A woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet,

  5. and a crown of twelve stars on her head. She was pregnant and cried out in pain as she was about

  6. to give birth. Then another sign appeared in heaven. An enormous red dragon with seven heads

  7. and ten horns and seven crowns on its head. Its tail swept a third of the stars out of the sky

  8. and flung them to the earth. The dragon stood in front of the woman who was about to give birth,

  9. so that it might devour her child the moment he was born. She gave birth to a son, a male child,

  10. who will rule all the nations with an iron scepter. And her child was snatched up to God,

  11. to his throne. The woman fled into the wilderness to a place prepared for her by God,

  12. where she might be taken care of for 1,260 days. Then war broke out in heaven. Michael and his angels

  13. fought against the dragon, and the dragon against his angels fought back. But he was not strong enough,

  14. and they lost their place in heaven. The great dragon was hurled down. That ancient snake called the devil,

  15. or Satan, who leads the whole world astray. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him.

  16. Then I heard a loud voice in heaven say,

  17. Now have come the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God, and the authority of his Messiah.

  18. For the accuser of our brothers and sisters, who accuses them before God day and night,

  19. has been hurled down. They triumphed over him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony.

  20. They did not love their lives so much as to shrink from death.

  21. Therefore, rejoice, you heavens, and you who dwell in them.

  22. But woe to the earth and the sea, because the devil has gone down to you.

  23. He is filled with fury, because he knows that his time is short.

  24. When the dragon saw that he had been hurled to the earth,

  25. he pursued the woman who had given birth to the male child.

  26. The woman was given the two wings of a great eagle,

  27. so that she might fly to the place prepared for her in the wilderness,

  28. where she would be taken care of for a time, times, and half a time,

  29. out of the snake's reach.

  30. Then from his mouth the snake spewed water like a river,

  31. to overtake the woman, sweep her away from the torrent.

  32. But the earth helped the woman by opening its mouth

  33. and swallowing the river that the dragon spewed out of its mouth.

  34. Then the dragon was enraged at the woman

  35. and went off to wage war against the rest of her offspring,

  36. those who keep God's commands

  37. and hold fast their testimony about Jesus.

  38. Well, let's pray.

  39. Father God, we come here today

  40. as those who seek to keep God's commands

  41. and who seek to hold fast

  42. our testimony about Jesus.

  43. and yet we recognise that doing so

  44. is going to be hard

  45. for we have an enemy.

  46. We need your help, Father, to know

  47. that the victory has been won by the Lord Jesus.

  48. help us to stand strong in his strength

  49. and in his power

  50. so that we too might overcome.

  51. Father, please,

  52. may not one of us fall,

  53. but may each one of us

  54. walk closely with you.

  55. may your word do its work in our lives today.

  56. In Jesus' name.

  57. Amen.

  58. Well, it's like something out of Lord of the Rings, isn't it?

  59. Or a novel by J.K. Rowling.

  60. The three main characters in chapter 12,

  61. we've got a woman,

  62. a son,

  63. and a dragon.

  64. The woman, verse 2,

  65. was pregnant

  66. and cried out in pain

  67. as she was about to give birth.

  68. Well, giving birth is always painful,

  69. but this is much more than just physical pain.

  70. Something dark and sinister

  71. is prowling around in the shadows.

  72. Look at the middle of verse 4.

  73. The dragon stood in front of the woman

  74. who was about to give birth

  75. so that it might devour her child

  76. the moment he was born.

  77. What should be a moment of joy

  78. is turning out to be filled with dread.

  79. Before this baby is born

  80. and has time to draw breath,

  81. he's going to be devoured by the dragon.

  82. The woman is in fear.

  83. The child is helpless.

  84. And when all seems hopelessly lost,

  85. look at the end of verse 5.

  86. Her child was snatched up to God

  87. and to his throne.

  88. We can all breathe a sigh of relief.

  89. That was a close one.

  90. Now as we read that,

  91. there's something very familiar

  92. about the vision, isn't there?

  93. In our minds we can't help

  94. but think about these three characters,

  95. the woman, the son, and this dragon

  96. and we begin to interpret, don't we?

  97. We can't help but think,

  98. Johnny, is that Mary?

  99. And is this Jesus?

  100. And is this Satan?

  101. Well, while the characters in John's vision

  102. are not real,

  103. they do convey a literal truth.

  104. It's not that there is a real woman

  105. clothed with the sun

  106. and a dragon with seven heads

  107. wandering around the place.

  108. No, John is using symbolism

  109. to communicate a literal truth.

  110. This isn't fantasy.

  111. This is real.

  112. This vision of a woman,

  113. a son, and a dragon

  114. retell the true story

  115. of the whole Bible.

  116. It's the epic battle

  117. between God and Satan.

  118. And we know Satan's objective

  119. is crystal clear

  120. to oppose Christ

  121. and destroy the church.

  122. Well, chapter 12

  123. has been written

  124. to remind us

  125. in no uncertain terms

  126. that God has the final victory

  127. over Satan

  128. and we can have assurance

  129. that this victory

  130. is ours too.

  131. God has the final victory

  132. over Satan

  133. and we can have assurance

  134. that this victory

  135. is ours too.

  136. So we're going to look

  137. at three things.

  138. There's three main scenes here

  139. as we look at these characters.

  140. We're going to see

  141. Satan's promised defeat,

  142. Jesus' triumphant victory,

  143. and the church's guaranteed protection.

  144. So first, scene one,

  145. Satan's promised defeat.

  146. Now to begin,

  147. we need to go back

  148. to an earlier true story.

  149. Let's go back

  150. to the beginning of the Bible,

  151. to Genesis chapter 3.

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  152. So find your way back.

  153. It's the first book in the Bible,

  154. Genesis chapter 3.

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  155. And here we see

  156. God's promise

  157. to defeat Satan.

  158. God had made a good

  159. and beautiful world.

  160. Adam and Eve

  161. were the first man

  162. and first woman,

  163. God's image bearers

  164. who were representing

  165. God's rule

  166. over the entire earth.

  167. But as we go

  168. to the Garden of Eden,

  169. lurking in the shadows

  170. was none other

  171. than that snake,

  172. Satan.

  173. And with an enticing lie,

  174. he proposed to Adam and Eve,

  175. you can be like God.

  176. You can rule your own life.

  177. And with cunning deceit,

  178. he promised,

  179. you won't die.

  180. The desire for self-rule

  181. was too great

  182. and Adam and Eve

  183. disobeyed their loving creator

  184. which unleashed

  185. God's judgment on the world,

  186. the curse of death.

  187. But that wasn't the end,

  188. was it?

  189. God made a promise

  190. to undo the curse

  191. and put things right.

  192. And we can read about

  193. that promise here.

  194. Genesis chapter 3,

    Genesis 3:14

  195. verse 14.

  196. So after these events,

  197. the Lord God said to the snake,

  198. because you have done this,

  199. because you have deceived

  200. the man and woman,

  201. cursed are you above all livestock

  202. and all wild animals.

  203. You will crawl on your belly

  204. and you will eat dust

  205. all the days of your life.

  206. And I will put enmity

  207. between you,

  208. Satan,

  209. and the woman,

  210. between your offspring

  211. and her offspring.

  212. And he will crush your head

  213. and you will strike his heel.

  214. God promised that a seed

  215. from the woman,

  216. one of her offspring,

  217. a son would come

  218. who would crush

  219. the head of Satan.

  220. But Satan would strike out.

  221. Yes, he will be crushed,

  222. but not before he delivers

  223. a striking blow.

  224. That's the promise

  225. at the beginning of this Bible,

  226. the true story.

  227. And that promise

  228. will be worked out

  229. through every page,

  230. through God's people,

  231. Israel.

  232. From the line of Abraham,

  233. a child would be born

  234. who would come

  235. and crush Satan.

  236. Now as we follow the promise,

  237. we discover that this promised son

  238. would also be God's king.

  239. Have a look with me

  240. to Psalm 2.

  241. Psalm 2.

  242. We're making some big jumps

  243. as we follow the promise of God

  244. through the Bible.

  245. Psalm 2.

  246. Psalm 2 is all about the nations

  247. plotting the downfall

  248. and the destruction

  249. of God's promised king.

  250. Just as Satan had caused Adam

  251. to rebel against God's rule,

  252. so the conflict continues.

  253. We can imagine Satan

  254. still lurking in the background.

  255. Psalm 2, verse 1.

    Psalms 2:1

  256. Why do the nations conspire

  257. and the peoples plot in vain?

  258. The kings of the earth rise up

  259. and the rulers band together

  260. against who?

  261. Against the Lord

  262. and against his anointed,

  263. saying,

  264. let us break their chains

  265. and throw off their shackles.

  266. We don't need God.

  267. Let us live as we please

  268. and be God's ourselves.

  269. But look at God's response,

  270. verse 4.

  271. The one enthroned in heaven

  272. laughs.

  273. The Lord scoffs at them.

  274. He rebukes them in his anger

  275. and he terrifies them

  276. in his wrath,

  277. saying,

  278. I have installed my king

  279. on Zion,

  280. my holy mountain.

  281. And look what God says

  282. the king will do

  283. to those who oppose him.

  284. Look at the end of verse 9.

  285. You will break them

  286. with a rod of iron

  287. and you will dash them

  288. to pieces like pottery.

  289. God's promised son

  290. would be a king

  291. who would crush his enemies

  292. and rule over all things

  293. and all peoples.

  294. Is God going to make good

  295. on his promise?

  296. Well, let's go back

  297. to Revelation chapter 12.

    Revelation 12 chapter mention

  298. You see,

  299. there is the promised son

  300. and there is the great defeat.

  301. The promise is fulfilled.

  302. You see,

  303. the vision of Revelation 12

  304. is the fulfillment

  305. of God's promise.

  306. The woman in the vision

  307. represents the people of God

  308. through whom the promised son

  309. would come.

  310. The dragon, of course,

  311. is none other than Satan.

  312. And the son

  313. is Jesus himself.

  314. Look at verse 5

  315. of Revelation 12.

  316. She will give birth

  317. to a son,

  318. a male child,

  319. who will rule

  320. all the nations

  321. with an iron scepter.

  322. That quote

  323. comes from

  324. Psalm 2,

  325. which we just read.

  326. Jesus is

  327. the promised king,

  328. God's son

  329. who would come

  330. to crush

  331. Satan's head.

  332. Jesus came

  333. to slay

  334. the dragon

  335. and the way

  336. in which

  337. Satan will defeat

  338. or the way

  339. in which

  340. Satan will be

  341. defeated

  342. is through

  343. the work

  344. of Jesus.

  345. Look very closely

  346. at verse 5.

  347. It clearly speaks

  348. about the birth

  349. of a son.

  350. She will give birth

  351. to a male child.

  352. It also speaks

  353. about the

  354. ascension of Jesus.

  355. Her child

  356. was snatched up

  357. to God

  358. and to his throne.

  359. Now,

  360. in between

  361. these two events,

  362. the birth

  363. of Jesus

  364. and the

  365. ascension

  366. of Jesus,

  367. we have the

  368. death

  369. and the

  370. resurrection

  371. of Jesus.

  372. Now,

  373. John doesn't

  374. mention them

  375. here,

  376. but he wants

  377. us to see

  378. in verse 5

  379. that the

  380. whole work

  381. and ministry

  382. of Jesus

  383. is in view.

  384. In other words,

  385. Satan is

  386. crushed,

  387. the dragon

  388. is slayed,

  389. the devil

  390. is defeated

  391. by the work

  392. of Jesus.

  393. He's coming

  394. into the world

  395. as the God-man,

  396. the one

  397. who lived

  398. the perfect

  399. life,

  400. who never

  401. failed

  402. under temptation,

  403. who never

  404. sinned.

  405. And when

  406. Jesus died,

  407. it seemed

  408. like Satan

  409. had won.

  410. As Jesus

  411. was crucified,

  412. it looked

  413. like it was

  414. over,

  415. but it was

  416. just a

  417. strike

  418. to the

  419. heel.

  420. Because as

  421. Jesus rose

  422. from the

  423. dead,

  424. he proved

  425. his victory

  426. over Satan.

  427. He crushed

  428. Satan's

  429. head.

  430. So God

  431. promised

  432. the defeat

  433. of Satan.

  434. And God

  435. through Jesus

  436. has fulfilled

  437. that promise.

  438. Jesus is

  439. now reigning

  440. and ruling

  441. in heaven

  442. over all

  443. things

  444. and all

  445. people,

  446. even

  447. Satan

  448. himself.

  449. So

  450. Satan's

  451. promised

  452. defeat.

  453. The second

  454. theme

  455. is

  456. Jesus'

  457. triumphant

  458. victory.

  459. The death

  460. and resurrection

  461. of Jesus

  462. was decisive.

  463. It signalled

  464. the defeat

  465. and the

  466. undoing

  467. of Satan.

  468. And when

  469. these events

  470. happened,

  471. as Jesus

  472. died and

  473. as he

  474. rose,

  475. it unleashed

  476. at that

  477. very moment

  478. an almighty

  479. conflict

  480. in heaven.

  481. Look at

  482. verse 7.

  483. Then war

  484. broke out

  485. in heaven.

  486. Now,

  487. as I read

  488. these verses,

  489. I often

  490. thought,

  491. well,

  492. this is

  493. referring to

  494. Satan's

  495. initial

  496. rebellion

  497. against God,

  498. kind of

  499. somewhere way

  500. back at the

  501. beginning of

  502. the story.

  503. And maybe

  504. in some

  505. ways we

  506. can read

  507. it like

  508. this,

  509. but I

  510. think it's

  511. saying that

  512. when

  513. Jesus

  514. died

  515. and rose,

  516. verse 7,

  517. then war

  518. broke out

  519. in heaven.

  520. Michael

  521. and his

  522. angels

  523. fought

  524. against

  525. the

  526. dragon

  527. and the

  528. dragon

  529. and his

  530. angels

  531. fought

  532. back,

  533. but he

  534. wasn't

  535. strong

  536. enough

  537. and they

  538. lost

  539. their

  540. place

  541. in heaven.

  542. The

  543. great

  544. dragon

  545. was

  546. hurled

  547. down,

  548. that

  549. ancient

  550. snake

  551. called

  552. the

  553. devil

  554. or

  555. Satan

  556. who

  557. leads

  558. the

  559. whole

  560. world

  561. astray.

  562. He

  563. was

  564. hurled

  565. to

  566. the

  567. earth

  568. and

  569. his

  570. angels

  571. with

  572. him.

  573. So

  574. it

  575. seems

  576. that

  577. even

  578. though

  579. Satan

  580. is a

  581. fallen

  582. angel,

  583. he

  584. still

  585. had

  586. access

  587. to

  588. God

  589. and

  590. he

  591. was

  592. still

  593. roaming

  594. around

  595. in

  596. heaven.

  597. That's

  598. what the

  599. text is

  600. telling us.

  601. Look at the

  602. end of

  603. verse 10

  604. and think of

  605. where he

  606. is.

  607. For the

  608. accuser of

  609. our brothers

  610. and sisters

  611. who accuses

  612. them

  613. before

  614. our God

  615. day and

  616. night

  617. has been

  618. hurled

  619. down.

  620. Satan

  621. is there

  622. in heaven

  623. accusing

  624. God's

  625. people

  626. but now

  627. because of

  628. Jesus'

  629. victory

  630. he has

  631. been

  632. hurled

  633. down.

  634. He

  635. has

  636. been

  637. thrown

  638. out.

  639. Two

  640. things will

  641. help us

  642. to see

  643. this.

  644. First,

  645. Jesus'

  646. victory

  647. over

  648. Satan.

  649. As

  650. Satan

  651. was

  652. defeated

  653. and

  654. removed,

  655. look at

  656. verse 10,

  657. then I

  658. heard a

  659. voice in

  660. heaven

  661. say,

  662. now have

  663. come the

  664. salvation

  665. and the

  666. power and

  667. the kingdom

  668. of our

  669. God and

  670. the authority

  671. of his

  672. Messiah.

  673. Victory

  674. has now

  675. been achieved.

  676. Why?

  677. For the

  678. accuser of

  679. our brothers

  680. and sisters

  681. who accuses

  682. them before

  683. our God

  684. day and

  685. night

  686. has been

  687. hurled

  688. down.

  689. I want

  690. us to

  691. picture for

  692. a moment

  693. heaven

  694. as a

  695. courtroom.

  696. Imagine

  697. the scene.

  698. Seated

  699. in the

  700. dock,

  701. the

  702. defendants

  703. are

  704. God's

  705. people.

  706. And up

  707. stands the

  708. chief

  709. prosecutor,

  710. Satan.

  711. He

  712. begins to

  713. accuse

  714. God's

  715. people,

  716. before

  717. God,

  718. highlighting

  719. their

  720. sin,

  721. presenting

  722. their

  723. failures.

  724. Day and

  725. night,

  726. he never

  727. ever stops

  728. accusing,

  729. piling up

  730. all the

  731. evidence of

  732. disobedience.

  733. And then

  734. when all

  735. seems lost,

  736. when judgment

  737. is about to

  738. be announced,

  739. someone

  740. comes rushing

  741. into the

  742. courtroom,

  743. them,

  744. now have

  745. come the

  746. salvation and

  747. the power of

  748. the kingdom

  749. of our

  750. God and

  751. the authority

  752. of his

  753. Messiah.

  754. Jesus has

  755. won.

  756. Jesus has

  757. been judged

  758. for their

  759. sin.

  760. Jesus has

  761. been condemned

  762. for their

  763. failures.

  764. He has

  765. died their

  766. death and

  767. he has

  768. defeated sin's

  769. penalty by

  770. rising from

  771. the grave.

  772. death.

  773. And at

  774. that very

  775. moment,

  776. Satan's

  777. accusations

  778. are torn

  779. in shreds.

  780. They no

  781. longer stand.

  782. They no

  783. longer count.

  784. He is hurled

  785. out of the

  786. courtroom

  787. forever.

  788. The chief

  789. prosecutor

  790. has been

  791. booted out

  792. and his

  793. powers have

  794. been taken

  795. from him.

  796. Satan has

  797. been kicked

  798. out once

  799. and for

  800. all, never

  801. to return

  802. and never

  803. to accuse

  804. again.

  805. He has

  806. been hurled

  807. down.

  808. What a

  809. wonderful

  810. victory.

  811. And the

  812. good news

  813. is that

  814. victory can

  815. be ours

  816. too.

  817. The victory

  818. over Satan

  819. is our

  820. victory.

  821. Look at

  822. verse 11

  823. with me.

  824. they

  825. triumphed

  826. over him.

  827. Well,

  828. who's

  829. they?

  830. Who's

  831. triumphed?

  832. Well,

  833. look back

  834. at just

  835. at the

  836. end of

  837. verse 10

  838. where it

  839. talks about

  840. the accuser

  841. of our

  842. brothers and

  843. sisters.

  844. They

  845. have

  846. triumphed

  847. over

  848. Satan.

  849. The church,

  850. God's

  851. people have

  852. triumphed.

  853. How?

  854. By the

  855. blood of

  856. the Lamb

  857. and by

  858. the word

  859. of their

  860. testimony.

  861. You see,

  862. Jesus

  863. won the

  864. victory

  865. and that

  866. victory

  867. now becomes

  868. ours as

  869. we trust

  870. in the

  871. blood of

  872. the Lamb.

  873. As we

  874. look to

  875. Jesus,

  876. as we

  877. see him

  878. die on

  879. the cross,

  880. it's as if

  881. I am

  882. saying,

  883. Jesus is

  884. being judged

  885. for me.

  886. Jesus is

  887. being condemned

  888. for my

  889. failure.

  890. Jesus is

  891. accused in

  892. my place.

  893. He is

  894. treated as

  895. guilty for

  896. me.

  897. You see,

  898. as I trust

  899. in Jesus,

  900. as I claim

  901. his death

  902. for me,

  903. I am free

  904. from accusation

  905. forever.

  906. The battle

  907. has been won.

  908. The victory

  909. is ours.

  910. And this

  911. is something

  912. that God's

  913. people should

  914. celebrate,

  915. verse 12.

  916. Therefore,

  917. rejoice,

  918. you heavens,

  919. and you

  920. who dwell

  921. in them.

  922. It's as if

  923. we should

  924. stop right

  925. now and

  926. start singing

  927. songs of

  928. praise and

  929. celebration for

  930. the victory

  931. that's been

  932. achieved for

  933. you and

  934. for me.

  935. But,

  936. Jesus has

  937. crushed

  938. Satan's

  939. head.

  940. The dragon

  941. has been

  942. slayed.

  943. But,

  944. look at the

  945. rest of

  946. verse 12.

  947. Woe to

  948. the earth

  949. and the

  950. sea because

  951. the devil

  952. has gone

  953. down to

  954. you.

  955. He is

  956. filled with

  957. fury because

  958. he knows

  959. that his

  960. time is

  961. short.

  962. Satan

  963. may be

  964. defeated,

  965. but he

  966. is not

  967. yet

  968. surrendered.

  969. he is

  970. still

  971. opposed to

  972. Christ and

  973. his church,

  974. but he

  975. hasn't waved

  976. the white

  977. flag.

  978. The conflict

  979. goes on,

  980. but hear

  981. this,

  982. God's

  983. people,

  984. the church,

  985. are still

  986. protected.

  987. Which brings

  988. us to the

  989. third scene,

  990. the church's

  991. guaranteed

  992. protection.

  993. having been

  994. defeated by

  995. Jesus,

  996. Satan now

  997. moves his

  998. point of

  999. attack.

  1000. Look at

  1001. verse 13.

  1002. When the

  1003. dragon saw

  1004. that he had

  1005. been hurled

  1006. to the

  1007. earth,

  1008. he pursued

  1009. the woman

  1010. who had

  1011. given birth

  1012. to the

  1013. male child.

  1014. The woman

  1015. represents,

  1016. as we've

  1017. been saying,

  1018. all of

  1019. God's

  1020. people,

  1021. the church.

  1022. This is

  1023. clear from

  1024. verse 17.

  1025. Look down

  1026. with me to

  1027. verse 17.

  1028. Then the

  1029. dragon was

  1030. enraged at

  1031. the woman

  1032. and went

  1033. off to

  1034. wage war

  1035. against the

  1036. rest of

  1037. her offspring.

  1038. And who

  1039. are her

  1040. offspring?

  1041. Those who

  1042. keep God's

  1043. commands and

  1044. hold fast to

  1045. their testimony

  1046. about Jesus.

  1047. They're God's

  1048. people,

  1049. the church,

  1050. people like

  1051. you and

  1052. me.

  1053. And Satan

  1054. is angry.

  1055. He is

  1056. mad.

  1057. He hates

  1058. Jesus and

  1059. he hates

  1060. those who

  1061. follow him.

  1062. In fact,

  1063. look back at

  1064. the end of

  1065. verse 12.

  1066. He's filled

  1067. with fury

  1068. because he

  1069. knows that

  1070. his time

  1071. is short.

  1072. He has

  1073. been defeated.

  1074. The battle

  1075. has been won

  1076. but he

  1077. hasn't yet

  1078. surrendered.

  1079. And he

  1080. knows that

  1081. it's only a

  1082. matter of

  1083. time before

  1084. he is thrown

  1085. into the

  1086. lake of fire

  1087. to be

  1088. tormented

  1089. forever and

  1090. ever.

  1091. He knows

  1092. his days

  1093. are numbered

  1094. so he

  1095. is hell

  1096. bent on

  1097. destroying

  1098. the church.

  1099. So we

  1100. need to be

  1101. aware of

  1102. Satan's

  1103. attack.

  1104. Look at

  1105. verse 17.

  1106. It's

  1107. clear,

  1108. clear,

  1109. isn't it?

  1110. Satan is

  1111. waging a

  1112. war against

  1113. God's

  1114. people.

  1115. He is

  1116. at war

  1117. with

  1118. Carigoline

  1119. Baptist

  1120. Church right

  1121. now.

  1122. He hates

  1123. you.

  1124. But let

  1125. us not

  1126. remember,

  1127. let us not

  1128. forget that

  1129. he's been

  1130. defeated.

  1131. The dragon

  1132. has been

  1133. slayed.

  1134. Satan has

  1135. been

  1136. disarmed.

  1137. He presents

  1138. himself as

  1139. threatening

  1140. and dangerous

  1141. but he

  1142. has no

  1143. weapons.

  1144. He can

  1145. snort and

  1146. he can

  1147. snarl but

  1148. the smoke

  1149. and the

  1150. fire have

  1151. been

  1152. extinguished.

  1153. All he

  1154. can do

  1155. is lie,

  1156. deceive

  1157. and tempt.

  1158. It may

  1159. seem harmless,

  1160. I mean,

  1161. what's a

  1162. lie?

  1163. What's a

  1164. temptation?

  1165. But if

  1166. we listen

  1167. to his

  1168. lies,

  1169. we begin

  1170. to doubt

  1171. our

  1172. salvation

  1173. and question

  1174. our

  1175. security

  1176. and we

  1177. will live

  1178. a life

  1179. as if

  1180. we

  1181. have

  1182. been

  1183. crushed.

  1184. Look,

  1185. when I

  1186. sin,

  1187. and I'm

  1188. not the

  1189. only one

  1190. in this

  1191. room who

  1192. does that,

  1193. I immediately

  1194. feel the

  1195. accusation of

  1196. Satan.

  1197. I become

  1198. very conscious

  1199. of his

  1200. judgment.

  1201. He might

  1202. not stand

  1203. before God

  1204. any longer

  1205. but he

  1206. presents himself

  1207. to me

  1208. highlighting

  1209. my sin

  1210. and reminds

  1211. me of

  1212. my failure.

  1213. He presents

  1214. his case

  1215. and ashamed

  1216. to say it,

  1217. the evidence

  1218. piles up

  1219. in front

  1220. of me.

  1221. Johnny,

  1222. you call

  1223. yourself a

  1224. Christian?

  1225. You think

  1226. God loves

  1227. you?

  1228. You want

  1229. to serve

  1230. in the

  1231. church?

  1232. Johnny,

  1233. you're a

  1234. fake and

  1235. you're a

  1236. fraud.

  1237. How can

  1238. God forgive

  1239. you again?

  1240. You think

  1241. he loves

  1242. you?

  1243. He's given

  1244. up on you

  1245. and you

  1246. might as

  1247. well give

  1248. up.

  1249. we can

  1250. feel quite

  1251. small

  1252. before a

  1253. dragon.

  1254. We can

  1255. get weighed

  1256. down by

  1257. guilt and

  1258. shame.

  1259. And our

  1260. response is

  1261. to sneak

  1262. off to the

  1263. sides and

  1264. hide in

  1265. the shadows.

  1266. Pull back

  1267. and believe

  1268. his lies and

  1269. go, no,

  1270. I can't

  1271. serve in

  1272. the church.

  1273. I can't

  1274. do that.

  1275. Look at

  1276. my life.

  1277. And his

  1278. accusations

  1279. crushes.

  1280. us.

  1281. We don't

  1282. open up

  1283. our Bible

  1284. because we

  1285. think, yeah,

  1286. I am a

  1287. fraud.

  1288. But it's

  1289. all deception.

  1290. It's all

  1291. deception.

  1292. Yes, I

  1293. have sinned.

  1294. But guess

  1295. what?

  1296. It's all

  1297. forgiven

  1298. sin.

  1299. It's all

  1300. paid for

  1301. sin.

  1302. In that

  1303. moment and

  1304. throughout our

  1305. daily lives,

  1306. we need to

  1307. remember that

  1308. Jesus has

  1309. defeated

  1310. Satan.

  1311. His powers

  1312. to accuse

  1313. and condemn

  1314. are broken.

  1315. He has

  1316. no weapon.

  1317. He's been

  1318. disarmed.

  1319. He may

  1320. snort and

  1321. snarl at you,

  1322. but the

  1323. fire that he

  1324. breathes out

  1325. has been

  1326. extinguished.

  1327. Peter talks

  1328. about him

  1329. being like a

  1330. prowling lion,

  1331. looking for

  1332. someone to

  1333. devour.

  1334. Well, it's

  1335. as if

  1336. the lion,

  1337. his fangs

  1338. have been

  1339. taken out

  1340. and all he

  1341. can give you

  1342. is a wet,

  1343. slobbery

  1344. munch.

  1345. He cannot

  1346. do anything

  1347. to you.

  1348. You see,

  1349. when the

  1350. attack comes,

  1351. we need to

  1352. remember our

  1353. protection.

  1354. Did you

  1355. notice that

  1356. when the

  1357. attack comes,

  1358. in Revelation

  1359. 12,

  1360. there's

  1361. always

  1362. deliverance?

  1363. Look at

  1364. verse 13.

  1365. When the

  1366. dragon saw

  1367. that he

  1368. had been

  1369. hurled to

  1370. the earth,

  1371. he pursued

  1372. the woman

  1373. who had

  1374. given birth

  1375. to the

  1376. male child.

  1377. The woman

  1378. was given

  1379. the wings

  1380. of a

  1381. great eagle

  1382. so that

  1383. she might

  1384. fly to

  1385. the place

  1386. prepared for

  1387. her in

  1388. the wilderness

  1389. where she

  1390. would be

  1391. taken care

  1392. of for

  1393. a time,

  1394. times,

  1395. and half

  1396. a time,

  1397. out of

  1398. the snake's

  1399. reach,

  1400. the woman,

  1401. God's

  1402. people,

  1403. the church,

  1404. will be

  1405. protected.

  1406. Now,

  1407. to help us

  1408. grasp this

  1409. and to

  1410. get the

  1411. most out

  1412. of it,

  1413. we need

  1414. to understand

  1415. the symbolism

  1416. and the

  1417. imagery here.

  1418. First,

  1419. look with me

  1420. at the

  1421. symbolism.

  1422. We're told

  1423. that the

  1424. church will

  1425. be taken

  1426. care of

  1427. for a

  1428. time,

  1429. times,

  1430. and

  1431. half a

  1432. time.

  1433. Well,

  1434. what's

  1435. all that

  1436. about?

  1437. Well,

  1438. a time

  1439. is

  1440. considered

  1441. to be

  1442. a year,

  1443. so a

  1444. time,

  1445. times,

  1446. half a

  1447. time is

  1448. equal to

  1449. three and

  1450. a half

  1451. years.

  1452. It's the

  1453. same length

  1454. of time

  1455. that was

  1456. mentioned

  1457. in verse

  1458. six.

  1459. Have a look

  1460. back at

  1461. verse six

  1462. and again

  1463. note the

  1464. way in

  1465. which they

  1466. are delivered.

  1467. the woman

  1468. fled into

  1469. the wilderness

  1470. to a

  1471. place prepared

  1472. for her

  1473. by God

  1474. where she

  1475. might be

  1476. taken care

  1477. of for

  1478. 1260

  1479. days.

  1480. Now,

  1481. there are

  1482. 1260

  1483. days in

  1484. three and

  1485. a half

  1486. years,

  1487. so these

  1488. two numbers

  1489. are talking

  1490. about the

  1491. same time

  1492. frame.

  1493. And I

  1494. think here

  1495. the time

  1496. frame that

  1497. it's

  1498. representing

  1499. or symbolising

  1500. is from

  1501. the resurrection

  1502. of Jesus

  1503. to the

  1504. return of

  1505. Jesus.

  1506. So all

  1507. people who

  1508. live in

  1509. that time,

  1510. who have

  1511. trusted in

  1512. Jesus and

  1513. who are

  1514. waiting on

  1515. his return

  1516. will be

  1517. protected by

  1518. Jesus.

  1519. We do

  1520. not need

  1521. to fear

  1522. Satan.

  1523. We will

  1524. be protected.

  1525. Now look

  1526. at the

  1527. imagery.

  1528. In

  1529. verse 6

  1530. and in

  1531. verse 14

  1532. we're

  1533. told that

  1534. they were

  1535. taken into

  1536. the wilderness

  1537. for protection.

  1538. Now why

  1539. would he say

  1540. they're taken

  1541. into the

  1542. wilderness?

  1543. It doesn't

  1544. sound a very

  1545. protective place,

  1546. does it?

  1547. A desert.

  1548. Well,

  1549. remember the

  1550. account of

  1551. the Exodus.

  1552. God's

  1553. people.

  1554. Remember the

  1555. account?

  1556. They were in

  1557. slavery under

  1558. the cruel

  1559. tyrant

  1560. Pharaoh.

  1561. And God

  1562. heard their

  1563. cry and

  1564. rescued them.

  1565. He delivered

  1566. them.

  1567. In fact,

  1568. God defeated

  1569. their enemy.

  1570. He crushed

  1571. Pharaoh and

  1572. his enemies.

  1573. God opened

  1574. up the Red

  1575. Sea to let

  1576. his people

  1577. cross.

  1578. But when

  1579. Pharaoh came

  1580. chasing after

  1581. with his

  1582. armies,

  1583. remember the

  1584. sea came in

  1585. on top of

  1586. them and

  1587. destroyed

  1588. them.

  1589. And as

  1590. they went

  1591. through the

  1592. Red Sea,

  1593. so they

  1594. entered into

  1595. the wilderness

  1596. and they

  1597. travelled and

  1598. they made

  1599. their way to

  1600. the promised

  1601. land.

  1602. And as

  1603. they travelled,

  1604. God protected

  1605. them and

  1606. provided for

  1607. them.

  1608. He gave

  1609. them food and

  1610. water.

  1611. He was a

  1612. cloud by day

  1613. from which they

  1614. could follow,

  1615. a fire by night.

  1616. his presence

  1617. amongst them.

  1618. In fact,

  1619. in Exodus,

  1620. that whole

  1621. event is

  1622. summarised like

  1623. this, as

  1624. God spoke to

  1625. his people.

  1626. You

  1627. yourselves have

  1628. seen what I

  1629. did to Egypt

  1630. and how I

  1631. carried you on

  1632. eagles' wings

  1633. and brought

  1634. you to

  1635. myself.

  1636. Now, can

  1637. you begin to

  1638. see the

  1639. imagery?

  1640. Look again

  1641. at verse

  1642. 14.

  1643. The woman

  1644. was given

  1645. the two

  1646. wings of

  1647. a great

  1648. eagle, so

  1649. that she

  1650. might fly

  1651. to the

  1652. place prepared

  1653. for her

  1654. in the

  1655. wilderness.

  1656. You see,

  1657. as God's

  1658. people, we

  1659. have been

  1660. rescued from

  1661. a cruel

  1662. tyrant,

  1663. Satan

  1664. himself.

  1665. Our enemy

  1666. has been

  1667. crushed and

  1668. defeated.

  1669. the promised

  1670. land awaits

  1671. us.

  1672. The new

  1673. heavens and

  1674. the new

  1675. earth is

  1676. coming, but

  1677. right now

  1678. today, we

  1679. are walking

  1680. through the

  1681. wilderness.

  1682. And as we

  1683. travel, we

  1684. are guaranteed

  1685. God's protection

  1686. and care.

  1687. He will walk

  1688. with us.

  1689. He will

  1690. provide for

  1691. us.

  1692. The dragon

  1693. may confront

  1694. us.

  1695. He may

  1696. frighten us

  1697. and scare

  1698. us, but

  1699. we are

  1700. safe and

  1701. secure.

  1702. Yes,

  1703. opposition

  1704. will come.

  1705. Yes,

  1706. persecution

  1707. will be

  1708. experienced.

  1709. Yes, there

  1710. will be

  1711. suffering and

  1712. struggles.

  1713. Yes, we

  1714. all will

  1715. fail and

  1716. fall.

  1717. But as

  1718. we walk

  1719. through our

  1720. wilderness

  1721. years, God

  1722. has us in

  1723. his hands.

  1724. Our

  1725. salvation is

  1726. secure.

  1727. Our hope

  1728. remains.

  1729. The

  1730. guarantees of

  1731. the new

  1732. heaven and

  1733. new earth

  1734. are kept

  1735. for us.

  1736. He will

  1737. bring us

  1738. through.

  1739. He will

  1740. carry you

  1741. on eagle's

  1742. wings

  1743. wings and

  1744. will carry

  1745. you to

  1746. himself.

  1747. So in

  1748. our journey,

  1749. can I

  1750. encourage us

  1751. to remind

  1752. each other

  1753. as we

  1754. walk along

  1755. that we

  1756. don't walk

  1757. alone.

  1758. We walk

  1759. together as

  1760. an army of

  1761. God's people

  1762. singing the

  1763. song that

  1764. Satan is

  1765. defeated,

  1766. Jesus is

  1767. victorious,

  1768. and the

  1769. church

  1770. is

  1771. protected.

  1772. Let's

  1773. pray

  1774. together.
